COMMENT

Of all the elements involved in a well-executed piece of furniture, for me, the edgebanding is where a product completely comes together as a finished piece, or, quite frankly, it can be utterly disappointing and ruin what could have been a well-crafted design. But the industry has come a long way in recent years, and a skilfully-edgebanded piece of furniture is a result of prime materials, modern manufacturing know-how and a clear appreciation of how to overcome the myriad challenges. Too many times, though, it’s all too easy to come across poorly executed edgebanding – even when today’s leading suppliers proffer a huge array of materials and technology, which, when applied in concert, will create the ideal finish for the overwhelming majority of commercial furniture products. That being said, the edgebanding still faces challenges as it adapts to evolving market demands and environmental considerations. Sustainability and environmental concerns fuel demand for eco-friendly materials, and as sustainability becomes a defining priority, there is increasing pressure on manufacturers to use environmentally friendly edgebanding materials. Traditional edgebanding products, such as those made from PVC, are facing increasing scrutiny due to their environmental impact. As a result, there is a significant push toward using alternatives, however, sourcing sustainable materials while maintaining durability and aesthetic appeal is a challenge.

It’s also worth noting that the edgebanding process itself generates waste, including off-cuts and scraps, which also need to be managed effectively. Are there enough efficient recycling systems for edgebanding materials, especially for plastic-based products?

As the furniture industry moves toward more automated production processes, edgebanding equipment needs to be faster, more precise, and capable of handling a variety of materials. Manufacturers are increasingly investing in CNC and automated edge banding machines to improve efficiency and product quality.

In addition, the trend toward digital and smart manufacturing presents both opportunities and challenges for the edgebanding sector. Edgebanding machines must be integrated with other aspects of the production process, such as design software, supply chain management, and QC systems, which requires both technological investment and a skilled workforce.

Overwhelmingly, though, the key issue is the look and feel of the end product, therefore, colour matching and aesthetic consistency play a crucial role in the final appearance of furniture. With consumer preferences leaning toward bespoke designs and diverse material choices, ensuring consistent colour matching and high-quality finishes remain a key challenge for suppliers.

In this issue, we have a range of articles (and advertising messages) to hopefully inform and inspire with fresh ideas, techniques and products to enable your edgebanding exploits to be as successful as you would like them to be.

I trust you enjoy the issue.

ABS EDGINGS IN CUTTINGEDGE PLAIN COLOURS

The new plain colours within the market are powdery-matt and still surprisingly intense. Crucially, they allow for versatile combinations. Following current trends, the colours will not only be used to create a contrast in future, but also for larger areas.

As always, Ostermann stays ahead of things and stocks the matching edgings for the coming furniture trends early on. When it comes to plain colours, these are mainly very intense but powdery-matt colours which are easy to combine both with each other and with matt wood and stone decors or trendy metal surfaces.

Considering current developments,

the new plain colours will often be seen as a contrast, and on a larger scale in the room. In keeping with the trend, Ostermann naturally also has the solution for the narrow surface in its range: the trend edgings comprise rustic greens such as Agave Green and Khaki, a greenish blue Bleu Pétrole as well as warm hues of red, ranging from Indian Red to Orange and the terracotta-coloured Adobe.

For lighter tones, the experts recommend edgings in colours such as Mustard or Grey Beige. All mentioned edgings are available from stock in many standard widths and different thicknesses,

and can be delivered within 24 hours.

Fabricators who work with zero bondline technologies can receive their edgings with a functional layer specially adapted to the respective technology.

If you are looking for economic solutions, it is best to order your edgings from Ostermann together with the other materials you need for your furniture making, such as workshop supplies, carcass connectors or handles. This will save time and shipping costs. You can also find all mentioned edging highlights by typing in the search term “#Highlights11” on the Ostermann website www.ostermann.eu.

Natural green

The green tones for the next generation of furniture are one thing above all: rustic and natural. They tend towards olive green and have distinctly earthy nuances. In line with this trend, the Ostermann experts recommend the ABS edgings Agave Green minipearl, Khaki microstructure and Grey beige minipearl. Another somewhat more colourful recommendation is the ABS edging Bleu Pétrole minipearl, which is reminiscent of a turquoise-blue mountain lake.

Warm orange red

In the red spectrum, the trend is moving in the direction of warm and lighter orange tones, but here, they are powdery and by no means gaudy. Imagine the soft autumn colours of Indian summer. Within this colour range, the Ostermann experts recommend the ABS edging Orange Velvet structure.

If you prefer something less conspicuous, choose the more discreet ABS edgings Indian Red minipearl or Adobe. The ABS edging Mustard minipearl also blends harmoniously into the “fiery” colour spectrum.

How to get perfect colour combinations

If the use of one colour in a room is too monotonous for you, you can, of course, combine two of the modern plain colours. Examples from the red range

are the edgings Adobe and Indian Red. In the green spectrum, Khaki and Agave Green look nice together. The edgings Bleu Pétrole and Grey beige also form a particularly harmonious match. If you are feeling bold, you can combine the edgings Orange and Mustard to create a duo whose warm summer colours will put your customers in a good mood even in autumn and winter.

All from one source

To save time and resources, you can order the selected edgings from Ostermann together with many other materials for furniture making, such as glues, cleaners, LED profiles, handles or carcass connectors. All it takes is a few clicks in the online shop or a quick phone call, and the goods are delivered reliably and quickly.

CREATE THE BEST BONDS WITH HENKEL TECHNOMELT ADHESIVES

Over the last few years, there has been much publicity about which hotmelt adhesive to use for edgebanding and edge lipping for the bonding of various materials to wood-based panel products. Kenyon Group’s Technical Sales & UK Sales Manager, Steve Morrow, tells us more ...

“It’s universally accepted that Henkel Technomelt EVA-based adhesives are straightforward to use and process,” he says. “Technomelt EVA-based adhesives are still as popular as ever, and Henkel offers a full range from filled to unfilled to suit every application. However, EVA-based adhesives are not ideal if the finished product is likely to be subjected to steam, heat or moisture.

“An alternative to Technomelt EVAbased adhesives is Henkel Technomelt PUR adhesives, which dominate the edgebanding market. Over the years,

“An additional string on the bow for Henkel Technomelt PUR adhesives is that they are leading the way in micro emission technology”

PUR adhesives have been more accessible to customers who are edging, and as technologies advance, PUR adhesives’ outstanding performance has become available to all edging customers, delivering the finished goods to the highest standards. If joints need exceptional water or heat resistance, then PUR adhesives are recommended, as they have a significantly superior performance versus an EVA adhesive.

“An additional string on the bow for Henkel Technomelt PUR adhesives is that they are leading the way in micro emission technology with Henkel Technomelt Micro Emissions PUR adhesives. These adhesives offer the same performance benefits that come with PUR technologies: low coat weight, tight joints, invisible glue lines, and exceptional high performance, all combined with excellent heat and water resistance, but without the hazardous labelling, making it more environmentally friendly and safer for operators to handle.

“Henkel Technomelt Polyolefin based hot melt adhesive bridges the gap between EVA and PUR by offering higher heat resistance and higher performance than an EVA, but with similar pricing levels.

“TECHNOMELT Polyolefin adhesives offer benefits of ultra-thin glue lines for superior edge aesthetics on all board types & colours, and are clean running adhesives with no stringing, which leads to less downtime for maintenance and cleaning. This, in turn, leads to increased production. Technomelt Polyolefin adhesives can reduce your glue usage by up to 20% as they have increased performance, and, therefore, the coat weight per linear metre can be reduced. This can lead to cost savings.

“As new products come onto the market, one adhesive range has remained unchanged, standing the test of time and for good reasons. Offering both EVA and PUR technologies, Henkel’s Technomelt DORUS HKP range of hot melt adhesive cartridges provides exceptional gluing performance and an easy-to-use option for HOLZHER edge banders. Having been specifically designed for HOLZHER edge banders, they are compatible for use on all their machines. HOLZHER edge banders are not just limited to cartridge adhesives.

With clever additions such as the hopper system, which can be attached to the machines, it allows for the use of both Henkel Technomelt EVA and PUR granule adhesives.

“So, you’re running Henkel PUR, Polyolefin or EVA hot melt adhesives for edge banding or edge lipping and therefore already recognise and demand the highest quality and performance from your adhesive. To ensure optimum performance, the same quality cleaner should be sought. Sadly, sometimes overlooked, cleaners play a vital role in your day-to-day operations – many would argue just as crucial a role as the adhesive

itself – a good cleaner can make all the difference. And the Henkel name is quite rightly associated with quality adhesives as well as hot melt cleaners, with their extensive range, which covers everything from surface cleaning to thorough system/application equipment cleaning. The right Henkel cleaner will bring you many operational benefits, ensuring consistent dispensing & bond quality, reducing downtime & maintenance, as well as prolonging the lifespan of application equipment.

“However, it’s not just the adhesives and cleaners that make Henkel adhesives the market leaders; it’s the technical and onsite support offered by both Henkel and Kenyon’s that separates us from the rest of the field. We don’t just sell adhesives; we live them, and this includes supporting you! Remember, there are edgebanding adhesives and cleaners, and then there’s Henkel’s next generation of edgebanding adhesives and cleaners – it’s really that simple. Henkel Technomelt range are superior products at the right price with proven results – just ask anyone using Henkel edgebanding adhesives!” Steve concludes.

LEITZ TOOLING SUPPORTS THE BRITISH FURNITURE INDUSTRY WITH HIGH QUALITY, INNOVATIVE

TOOLING

SOLUTIONS

Today, British manufacturers face many challenges in furniture production and edgebanding. With product ranges growing and batch sizes becoming ever smaller, this mix of materials, thicknesses and profiles can only be mastered economically with innovative tooling solutions and dedicated technical support.

Leitz Tooling works very closely with some of the UK’s largest and smallest furniture manufacturers to improve efficiency and maximise performance. With 145 years of industry experience and a massive range of over 8,000 tools, Leitz Tooling has the solutions and knowledge to support the growth of the furniture industry.

Leitz has also developed some unique and innovative tooling solutions to tackle manufacturing challenges such as noise reduction and quick profile changes.

Solutions for managing varying thicknesses and profiles

The award-winning FlexTrim3 profile cutter from Leitz was engineered to reduce downtime from profile changes when edgebanding. The Leitz FlexTrim profile cutters allow simple profile changes via the machine control on Homag machines due to the multi-profile technology.

Manufactured from top-grade diamond, these unique cutters contain up to three profiles in one tool, resulting in reduced downtime from changing and setting tools. The tool is very flexible and is designed to use customerspecific profiles, allowing for bespoke manufacturing at a large scale.

Leitz Tooling also manufactures adjustable jointing cutters that allow for a significant reduction in downtime

and adjustments when changing thicknesses between batches. Leitz adjustable jointing cutters reduce downtime from tool changes and also reduce the amount of tool stock that furniture manufacturers need to hold, which has reduced set-up costs for some companies by up to 60%. The easy adjustment system allows for faster changes to the cutting depth between batches. Additionally, the high-grade diamond tips enable smooth finishes ideal for glueing, and it significantly reduces tear-out thanks to the tooth geometry.

Solutions for high-quality finishes

Leitz has specialised tooling solutions for achieving excellent surface finish quality. The company offers a high shear range of edgebanding tools called EdgeExpert. Edge Expert tools cut at the optimal cutting angle for high-quality finishes and low running costs at around 54°, which, after heavy research, was proven to provide “better finishes than higher shear tooling around 70°”.

With innovative tooth geometries, EdgeExpert tooling provides impressive tear- and chip-free edges and smooth sides, even when processing laminated or denser materials. In fact, EdgeExpert tools typically achieve about 30% longer lifetime when cutting laminates compared to conventional solutions.

Leitz also manufactures diamond-tipped pre-milling cutters with alternate shear angle for tear-free jointing edges and cutting surfaces. Featuring well-designed lightweight tool bodies that reduce machine wear and support efficient chip collection, Leitz manufactures pre-milling solutions for all brands of machinery. Their improved finished quality leads to increased process efficiency, with lower costs per running metre than solutions like double jointing.

Solutions for noise reduction & dust extraction

The processing of panel material requires light and quiet tools at the same time to minimise the damage to man and machine as far as possible. The Diamaster WhisperCut series of edgebanding tools from Leitz is specially designed to reduce such strains. Due to its optimised body shape and low weight, noise pollution during jointing and rebating is significantly reduced by up to 5 dB(A), and the quality of the workplace is improved. The resharpenability of the system with replaceable cutting edges also guarantees high cost efficiency, resulting in low costs per running metre.

“With 145 years of industry experience and a massive range of over 8,000 tools, Leitz Tooling has the solutions and knowledge to support the growth of the furniture industry”

also supplies Dust Flow Control (DFC) hoods for edgebanding tools. Leitz DFC® Extraction hoods are individually designed and precisely adapted to the individual application. Therefore, all processing options, such as profile variants or different material thicknesses, are taken into account. The result is extensive cost savings through improved cutting, extended tool life, the reduction of cleaning at the machine and dustfree workpieces. Not only does the DFC technology create less machine wear, maintenance, set-up and energy costs, but it also can help produce -5 dB(A) less noise through the noise-reducing design of the Extraction hood. When combined with WhisperCut technology, this provides significant noise reduction in edgebanding.

Leitz “snip saws” for edgebanding also incorporate noise reduction technology into their saw blade design. Snip sawing generates a lot of noise at very high decibel levels, but is often overlooked by the HSE and production managers due to short running cycles. Incorporating Leitz sawing solutions can heavily reduce the damage to a worker’s hearing during these operations without sacrificing on quality and productivity.

Solutions for high volume production

Leitz works with many of the UK’s largest furniture and kitchen manufacturers and, therefore, has created some devoted solutions for mass producers. Products like the DP hogger are suitable for the wide variety of carrier and decorative

materials used in panel production. The hogger has a recommended feed rate of 30 m min-1, making it suitable for high volume manufacturing.

Thanks to the new tooth shape, optimum machining results are achieved over the entire life cycle of the tool, which can reduce machining costs by up to 20%. The design enables efficient chip removal and the vibration-reducing tool body further to increase the tool life and thus the economic efficiency. The DT premium hogger can also be sharpened up to 15 times, making it extremely sustainable and cost-effective with a consistent cutting width.

Technical support, training & digital solutions

In 2023, Leitz launched the Xpert app, allowing tool information to be accessed anywhere at any time. The app also gives machinists specific application data and has built-in calculators for determining feed speeds and other key considerations when machining.

Leitz frequently hosts training seminars where companies of all sizes come to see how collectively we can maximise efficiency and optimise the production process. Leitz has developed many machining strategies for edgebanding and shares this knowledge with its customer base. With full technical support, Leitz is a sole supplier and offers tooling, sharpening, advice and even site visits to support furniture manufacturers. 01279 454530

HOLZ-HER’S SPRINT – A

TRANSFORMATIVE

BREAKTHROUGH IN EDGEBANDING

Working with premier retail brands such as Tesco, KFC and The Fragrance Shop, specialist architectural joinery company, Adams Joinery Ltd, knows all too well the importance of producing consistent, high-quality edging. When their old edgebander’s performance started to impact production, the Londonbased joinery invested in a Sprint 1329 edgebander from Holz-Her UK to increase efficiencies throughout the edging process.

“The right machine in any workshop should be a help and not a hindrance to your production,” begins Alex Adkinss, Senior Production Manager at Adam’s Joinery. “This simply wasn’t the case with our old edgebander. We knew we needed more control over our edging. This meant being able to quickly and easily change glue colours when required, reduce the amount of manual set-up involved and eradicate the hand finishing of panels once they’d been edged.”

It was clear from the off that Holz-Her’s Sprint offered Alex and the team the complete package, thanks to its sturdy German build quality and wealth of automated features designed to simplify operation and guarantee repeatable, nearinvisible glue lines.

“We could see how its multi-function milling, fa.s.t (fast setting technology) and integrated finishing units could de-skill the operation for us, whilst its ability to apply solid wood onto veneer lippings, melamine, HPL, real wood coil and veneer lippings up to 15mm thick solid wood onto work pieces up to 60mm thick offered us the flexibility we were after.

“Then there was the Glu Jet system it came with,” adds Alex adds. “We’d read about its insanely quick heat-up times, its ability to switch between EVA and PUR and easy cleaning, but it all sounded a bit too good to be true. How wrong were we? When we saw the machine in action, we were immediately sold. No other manufacturer could offer anything like it. We knew it would be a game-changer for our business, and we were right.

“Due to the bespoke nature of our work, we can easily perform 20 different setups on the machine in a week, which, on our old edgebander, was difficult to say the least. Everything needed to be set by hand – requiring a certain level of skill and patience – and changing glue colours was one of the most painful experiences of them all,” admits Alex.

“With the Glu Jet, it takes just five minutes to change from one glue colour to another and only requires a 300g

cartridge to complete the process. It was taking us three hours to change the glue on our old edgebander and 5kg of slugs to guarantee a good job,” explains Alex.

“Because the old machine would be out of action for so long, we’d have to make the decision to swap the glue the night before and be in a position to halt work on the machine. It was our biggest headache. If we didn’t do it, we’d risk producing poorquality edging and an ugly glue line. Now, we simply use the automatic cleaning function to purge the machine until the solution runs clear. This saves us three hours of downtime, as well as wasted labour and a potential production backlog.”

Then there are the automatic set-up functions. “Each job we work on may require a different panel type or lipping thickness, but the set-up on the Sprint is exactly the same. If you’re running a job and you’ve got 12mm, 25mm and 60mm thick workpieces, you can click a button and the machine will automatically change its settings to accommodate the different sizes in seconds, without you having to stop and re-set the machine. Plus, thanks to its smart premilling features, it compensates for any discrepancies on the board and allows you to make fine adjustments between 0.1–0.01mm yourself.”

“Due to the bespoke nature of our work, we can easily perform 20 different set-ups on the machine in a week, which, on our old edgebander, was difficult to say the least”

Adams Joinery’s Sprint 1329 edgebander from Holz-Her

The finishing units and automated anti-static spray on the Sprint have also eradicated hand finishing and, thanks to the machine’s buffers, it works effectively on even the most delicate veneers. “As well as buffers, scraper and four different cutter types, we opted for spray units on the front and back to avoid any additional finishing, especially on high gloss melamine. Not having to scrape off excess glue from every panel saves us two to three minutes per board, which soon adds up when you’re running thousands of pieces through it. It also means the risk of human error – like digging a chisel in too deeply and marking the panel – is no longer an issue. No glue spills on the face, no poorly cut edge, just a perfectly clean, flat board.”

On top of this, the Sprint also aids the operator in other ways. “It tells you how much glue you have left and how much edging you’ve used. It takes the guesswork out of the process and doesn’t lead to any downtime whatsoever. This is particularly handy when working on larger shopfitting projects where we might require 1,000m of edging at a time as you don’t need to stop the machine to check.”

Alex continues, “Heat-up times have also gone from anywhere between 30 minutes and one hour, to just five minutes. This not only saves on energy but production time, too. It also means we can be more reactive if an unplanned board needs to be run through. Now we can just turn it on and go. This level of flexibility cannot be underestimated in any joinery business.”

When it comes to labour, there is also no longer a reliance on skilled operators. “We had two primary operators on the old edgebander because of the level of skill required to use it. Now, we have eight people that can use the Sprint easily. The difference is night and day and, if somebody retires or leaves, it doesn’t leave us in a vulnerable position to find an experienced replacement.” Alex adds, “Following the visual prompts on the screen and operating the machine really is child’s play.”

Following a smooth installation process and three days of training on the machine, the edgebander has now been in use for 12

“It’s safe to say we use everything on the Sprint, and everything it does, it does well. The ongoing service with Holz-Her has also been the best I’ve experienced from a machinery manufacturer”

months. “I started by saying this machine was a game-changer and it has been. The Sprint has given us the confidence to complete jobs to a much higher standard and has reduced production times,” says Alex. “On the face of it, it’s not a cheap machine, but its build quality, speed, accuracy, and simple set-up will pay us back over and over again. All these areas positively impact our labour and material costs, as well as the ability to future-proof our business. These areas cannot get overlooked.”

Alex continues, “Some machinery manufacturers try and sell you a machine with this idea that it can do everything, but inevitably, you don’t end up using most of the features on it. It’s safe to say we use everything on the Sprint, and everything it does, it does well. The ongoing service with Holz-Her has also been the best I’ve experienced from a machinery manufacturer, and their troubleshooting has been exceptional. The Sprint is really straightforward, but if I need help or support, I can WhatsApp one of the edgebanding experts in Abingdon, and within five minutes, he’s telling me what I need to do to resolve the problem. That’s unheard of in this industry. It’s actions like this that give us resounding confidence in Holz-Her and peace of mind in both the edgebander and the aftercare going forward.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF CHOOSING THE RIGHT GLUE FOR EDGEBANDING

Edgebanding is the next processing step right after the flat lamination of panels. This is a crucial application that, if not done with the necessary precision, can ruin the entire workpiece. TAKA – an Italian company with over 20 years of experience in the world of HMPUR adhesives for exterior, interior and many other applications – tells us more ... The aesthetical defect of an improperly applied edge can be visible right after the process or might become obvious at a later stage. But that’s not all, a perfect edegebanding can guarantee the

performance and longevity of the panel. Let’s think about some furniture to be installed in the kitchen and the bathroom, an especially demanding environment due to the humidity and elevated temperature. If the edge is not glued well, the risk of water or vapour infiltration time is just around the corner. The panel may swell over time, and the edge band will peel off.

How can we prevent these risks? The use of reactive hot melt polyurethane adhesives (HMPUR) guarantees a particularly effective bonding because it is not only a physical bonding process (as for EVA or PO glues) but also an irreversible chemical one.

This way, the final product features some outstanding characteristics:

• Heat resistance above 150°C

• Water resistance

• Vapor resistance

• Solvent resistance

The German kitchen association, AMK, has created a test for the evaluation of the steam resistance of kitchen doors. In fact, “only polyurethane-based hot-melt adhesives pass this test”.

Types of adhesives commonly used for

edgebanding

Three main types of hot-melt adhesives are used the most in the furniture market and especially in the edgebanding process.

Comparing the performance of traditional non-reactive hot melts (EVA and PO-based) and reactive polyurethane adhesives, there are significant differences:

1. HMPUR adhesives are applied at lower temperatures (120-150°C) against the 180-210°C required to apply EVA-based adhesives or 190210°C for PO-based adhesives.

2. Reduced glue weight. General recommendations are about 90130 g/m2 for HMPUR adhesives against 150-300g/m2 for EVA and PO-based glues.

The lower glue consumption not only means savings for the purchase of glue, but it also allows for the creation of a very thin and nearly invisible glue line, best when the glue is applied using an application roller with low knurling.

SCM PRESENTS THE STEFANI M INDUSTRIAL EDGEBANDER

Top quality machining and productivity on any kind of panel or material and in full sync with the demands of a digital, connected and integrated factory: these are the main advantages of the stefani m industrial edgebander.

Catering to the latest trends in furniture and design in terms of flexible production, Industry 4.0 and now, even Industry 5.0, the “stefani m” industrial edgebander has everything it takes to position itself as a very strong competitor on the market. Every detail has been designed to offer a solution in line with the industry’s more complex demands: from the machine’s structure to the digital and electronic control systems, from the machining units with power-assisted movement to the latest gluing devices, for an even faster, more efficient glue change.

“The result is a highly configurable, customised edgebander, designed to work reliably and provide top-quality machining, both in the stand-alone version and in integrated cells”

The result is a highly configurable, customised edgebander, designed to work reliably and provide top-quality machining, both in the stand-alone version and in integrated cells. One other important advantage is its ability to achieve maximum quality standards easily and without interruption, even on the most delicate, state-of-the-art materials, thanks to SCM’s new electronic touch technology.

Furthermore, in an attempt to meet the increasingly more widespread demand for flexible, connected and integrated production, “stefani m” comes with a “Maestro active edge” control system, which means it can operate in perfect synergy with the Maestro edgestore manager software, other SCM technologies and MES IT and management systems used in the factory.

Industrial productivity

The new “stefani m” can machine panels at a speed of up to 25 m/min and with a minimum distance between the panels of 350mm. All this, thanks to reliably triedand-tested units and a new, highly rigid mechanical structure

Excellent versatility in gluing solutions

Another significant new feature of “stefani m” is the new gluing unit which ensures the three key technologies are always ready to hand – PUR glue, EVA glue and Hot Air AirFusion+-, up to six rolls with automatic change of machining edge

and height adjustment of the edge table to ensure the edge is always in the right position on the panel side.

A new, innovative FlexMelter “all-in-one” pre-melting device which uses EVA and PUR glue in slugs and granules, as well as a fast glue change and without waste thanks to the removable container.

High-end electronic units

The “stefani m” electronic units are designed to meet two objectives that are key to the market: ease of use even for more complex machinings on delicate, invogue materials thanks to an automatic, flexible set-up, and repeatability, quality and accurate production processes, thanks to the electronic touch.

1. Y-SE 1000 Servo end trimming unit. For constant precision when cutting, irrespective of the amount and type of panels machined, to optimise machining work even on the most delicate panels, automatically control adjustments and correct any machining errors on the spot.

2. Round 2 Servo rounding unit. Guarantees top-quality machining on any profile and optimises the processes even on three different edge thicknesses.

The result is a highly configurable, customised edgebander, designed to work reliably and provide top-quality machining, both in the stand-alone version and in integrated cells.

CUT EDGE BOND DOUBLES CAPACITY WITH HOMAG MACHINERY

Cut Edge Bond, a woodworking supply shop based in Buckinghamshire, has quickly made a name for itself by delivering cut-to-size panels, edge banding, and bonding services to the highest standards. Despite operating out of a modest 1,800 square foot workshop, the business caters to a wide range of customers, from carpenters and builders to DIY enthusiasts.

Since launching just two and a half years ago, Cut Edge Bond has expanded its services and client base. However, when founders Jose and Sophie first started, their production capabilities were limited by older, manual machinery that slowed down operations and placed the

entire burden of production on Jose. To solve this, they decided to invest in some automated HOMAG magic.

The challenge

Jose and Sophie originally ran Cut Edge Bond with a pair of early-2000s machines – robust, but outdated, and fully reliant on manual settings that demanded handson operation. “Our setup was the same as it is now – a machine that cuts and a machine that edges,” explains Jose. “But they were old bangers that were slow and frankly frustrating to use. I was constantly adjusting settings by hand, which significantly limited production efficiency.”

To grow their business, they needed an upgrade that could ease their workload and increase their output. “When it came to selecting a new machine, we were looking at the bigger picture. I remember Sophie saying, ‘It would be nice to have something even I can operate!’ At that time, she was focused solely on the business side of things and had never used an edge bander before … so we were looking for something very simple, very automated and very powerful. “HOMAG was the first company that came to mind. We also looked at their competitors just to be certain. But ultimately, HOMAG ticked every box and was the clear choice.”

HOMAG’s solution

After running through their specific needs with HOMAG, Jose and Sophie decided to invest in the EDGETEQ S-300 edge bander. With this new, automated machine, Sophie was able to contribute directly to production with minimal training. “It’s amazing that someone with no prior experience with an edge bander can simply press a button and get the job done,” says Jose. “And in terms of output … the speed, finish, and quality are amazing. It’s improved our work production massively.”

A year later, Cut Edge Bond upgraded their beam saw to the HOMAG SAWTEQ B-300, which provided the same level of efficiency and ease of use. “The machine itself is brilliant and, when coupled with the combiTec software, it’s remarkably efficient, fast and smart. The automated nature of the system takes away a lot of the human reliability and therefore minimises any human error.”

“It’s amazing that someone with no prior experience with an edge bander can simply press a button and get the job done”

The technical support from HOMAG has also been crucial in helping the business run smoothly. “We can’t fault HOMAG’s technicians,” says Jose. “They’re very knowledgeable and provide an excellent service.”

Double the capacity

By enabling Sophie to assist with production, and providing a more efficient process, the new HOMAG machinery has made quite the difference to Cut Edge Bond’s operation. “We’ve increased our capacity by 100% – and some days it feels more like 150%,” says Jose.

As a result, the company’s growth has been tangible. With the boost in productivity, Jose and Sophie were able to hire two additional team members, expanding their business to meet increasing demand.

Looking ahead

Cut Edge Bond continues to thrive, and Jose credits the new HOMAG machines as a cornerstone of their success. “The machines have become a great and essential pillar to our business,” he says. “We can now take on more work, and the precision of these machines ensures that we deliver top-quality products every time.”

With an eye on the future, Cut Edge Bond is poised for continued growth, confident that their partnership with HOMAG will support their expansion and provide the technology they need to succeed.
