With the summer weather finally making its presence felt, the Olympics in full swing and the first ‘pair’ of UK trade shows behind us, my attention has already swung to wondering what Cologne and Hannover might offer up in May next year as Interzum and Ligna take centre stage once more. Traditionally, these two mighty events offer up a slew of new concepts, ideas and innovative solutions – I have no doubt that in 2025 this will be the case once more. We will be presenting our previews of both events from the turn of the year and will, of course, be reporting from both events, including on-site video work and social media posts.
Talking of which, there are a number of videos to view on our YouTube channel of our exploits at the recent Furniture Components Expo and Materials & Finishes events. Please subscribe to the channel in order to get the latest updates.
Included in this issue, we have three installation articles: AXYZ at Auto Trail VR, Biesse at Washroom Washroom, and Homag at Michael Pepper Joinery – all extolling the virtues of wise investment when looking to increase output and efficiency. Elsewhere this month are five Features covering key sectors, plus this month’s dynamic Products section which boasts new options including surfacing, sanding, splash-backs and worktops, a through-feed thicknesser, an industrial edgebander, a new FR adhesive, and more besides.
I hope you enjoy the issue, and don’t forget to sign up for our twice-weekly newsletters, social media posts and video updates.

Kelcol celebrates first year with NBF
Kelcol has been manufacturing beds in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, for 45 years, and this year celebrates the first anniversary of joining the National Bed Federation.
Kelcol was established by David Kelly and his family in 1979, manufacturing and supplying beds direct to trade retailers. Current MD Amy Wheeler joined Kelcol in 2009 working in sales administration and going on to become involved in all parts of the business from accounts to buying. Three years ago, Amy, together with her parents, bought Kelcol and her two sisters have now joined the team too.
The company manufactures beds and sprung mattresses under the Kelcol Bed Company and Sleepwell brands, supplying around 150 retailers
across the UK.
With a focus on quality, the company uses traditional techniques, with most processes carried out by hand by its highly skilled team. It also manufactures electrically adjustable beds.
“Every one of the 11,000 mattresses and beds we produce each year is fully bespoke,” explains Amy. “We make to order and
are extremely proud of our high quality, traditionally manufactured product range.
“When we acquired the business, we saw it as a great opportunity to take a fresh look at everything we do and find ways of improving how we work. A key part of this strategy involved applying to join the industry’s leading trade association, the NBF, and the audit helped us to review all of
our processes from health and safety to compliance. Not only did this give us confidence that we were operating in the best way possible, but it also strengthened our customers’ trust in us as a reputable supplier.
“As well as achieving the ‘badge of quality’ of being part of the NBF, membership has delivered other benefits. It’s been really useful to be able to ask the NBF team for advice on industry issues.
Joining the NBF is part of our commitment to taking Kelcol to the next level and raising our profile within the sector. We’re looking forward to exhibiting our range at the NBF’s Bed Show next year which will be a perfect opportunity to talk to more retailers and network with our peers.”

AES at Materials and Finishes Show
In May 2024, AES UK exhibited at the all-new Materials and Finishes Show held at the Birmingham NEC. Having 500 square metres of exhibition space, AES had two adjoining stands and took the opportunity to display the latest in Industrial CNC technology by showing a broad selection of machinery from the different product groups manufactured by the AES Group.
Flat bed nesting machines are one of the most popular CNCs used by panel based manufacturers, especially furniture makers, shop fitters, van liners and the events industries. AES had various models on display, including the Flexa Pro which is the starting point of the industrial series of CNC machines and has also been one of the most popular, with installations throughout the UK.
“Preparations are now well underway for the next Open House Exhibition, which will be held 26th - 29th September 2024”
The all-new Super Nova is the next level in the AES range and sports a new gantry cover with LED status bars, along with a nine-spindle vertical drill and rotary tool changer. The latest Super Nova has been designed to be supplied as either a ‘standalone’ machine, or can also be supplied as an automated nesting cell with automatic loading and offloading.
The heavy-duty AES Extreme Ultra Line machine was also displayed, equipped with the ‘Label X’ option to allow automatic board alignment and automatic labelling for part identification.
There were also two pod and rail style machines on display, including the Vega Ultra Evo which is a typical three-axis ‘Fire Door Spec’ machine complete with double sided horizontal router head to machine the locks and hinges. This latest machine also has LED light strips to assist with pod positioning and a rotary tool changer for increased efficiency.
The AES Vega Ultra five-axis machine was also displayed, showing a typical 3D carving of a lion’s head. The increased Z level of the five-axis machine increases the scope of manufacturing possibilities, as does the endless movement in the B and C axis allowing for seamless cutting (the router head does not need to keep unwinding).
For those looking to produce by volume,
the AES Beta beamsaw was on display which is available in various cutting lengths along with a number of cutting depths. The model shown was the PS03 3200 which is suitable for cutting up to three 18mm panels in a single operation and has a 3200mm cutting length. There are several options for this machine, with further models available to include rear or side loading along with automated board storage.
The perfect machine to have working in conjunction with a beamsaw is a CNC drilling machine. The popular Sirius 950M was on display along with the larger capacity Go 1300 with twin clamps and automatic tool changer.
For the majority of the show, the AES stand was a hive of activity with customers both old and new taking the opportunity to see the machines and to meet the team.

Auto-Trail V.R. Ltd and AXYZ Routers –revolutionising motorhome manufacturing
Auto-Trail V.R. Ltd is a distinguished British motorhome and campervan manufacturer, with a rich history dating back to 1982. Originating as a caravan repair business, Auto-Trail has evolved into a market leader, known for its customisable, high-quality leisure vehicles. This case study examines how Auto-Trail V.R. Ltd has implemented AXYZ’s advanced CNC routing technology to transform its manufacturing process, resulting in increased efficiency, reduced waste and enhanced product quality.
Auto-Trail V.R. Ltd began as a caravan repair business but quickly evolved into a motorhome manufacturer, responding to growing customer demand for bespoke, luxury vehicles. Throughout the decades, from introducing the Cheyenne range in the 1990s to launching its first A-Class motorhome in 2006, Auto-Trail has been at the forefront of motorhome design and functionality.
A journey of exploration and discovery
Auto-Trail offers more than just motorhomes; it provides a gateway to exploration and discovery. Each vehicle is designed to integrate seamlessly into the lifestyle of adventurers, enabling them to create lasting memories. Auto-Trail stands out in the motorhome industry for its commitment to personalisation, offering an extensive range of customisation options. This dedication ensures that each vehicle not only meets but exceeds customer expectations.
Adoption of AXYZ technology
“In early 2024, facing the upcoming retirement of a skilled employee and the limitations of manual production methods (including hand-cutting from drawings and patterns) Auto-Trail decided to automate their manufacturing process,” says Paul Spivey, Design Engineer.
This decision was also driven by the need to streamline operations and maintain control over material use, which manual methods could no longer efficiently
support. Auto-Trail therefore decided to invest in AXYZ routers to automate its manufacturing processes. The adoption of CNC technology offered greater control over materials, improved design flexibility and enhanced production efficiency.
After considering various options (including waterjet technology which proved to be logistically not viable) and the need for precise cuts, this led them to explore other options, culminating in the selection of AXYZ’s CNC knife cutter.
“I looked at several different manufacturers, but AXYZ gave us the flexibility we were looking for with the ability to have a multi-change router head and suitability for the manufacturing environment,” explains Paul Spivey.
Auto-Trail chose the AXYZ INFINITE 4022 1C2Z ATC CNC Router. The INFINITE router is a highly configurable CNC machine that is suitable for one-off, small batch production as well as high volume and high productivity applications, including woodworking, plastic fabrication, engineering plastic machining and so
“The implementation of AXYZ machines went beyond mere automation; it ushered in a paradigm shift in how Auto-Trail approached its manufacturing processes”
much more.
For a wide range of routing operations, one can choose from high-speed spindles ranging from 5HP to 15HP. For knife cutting, choose from a tangential knife, which can be used for creasing and folding applications or an oscillating knife which can be used to process soft goods material.
The role of AXYZ machines in AutoTrail’s manufacturing
The AXYZ machines revolutionised AutoTrail’s production processes, particularly in handling insulation material for pressed panels. Instead of manual cutting, CNC routing enabled precise shaping, reduced component count per panel, improved fit and reduced waste, printing, paper and transport costs. Additionally, the machines facilitated the production of customised parts specific to vehicle models, enhancing overall efficiency and material utilisation.
The integration of AXYZ routers at
Auto-Trail has also enhanced design and production. The CNC technology has enabled complex cuts, reducing the need for plywood patterns and the number of components per panel from ten to four. This has streamlined the assembly process significantly.
The improvement in the fit of components, due to the precise cutting ability of the AXYZ machines has led to less rework and errors, resulting in a reduction in the labour intensity. The automation of cutting processes has descaled the skill requirements, allowing less skilled workers to manage operations efficiently, which is vital as the workforce ages.
Quality and innovation
The integration of AXYZ technology has not only optimised production but also maintained, if not enhanced, the quality of the final products. The precision of the AXYZ routers ensures each part meets strict quality standards, which is crucial for the overall reliability and performance of Auto-Trail’s motorhomes.
Cost savings and quality improvements
The adoption of AXYZ machines resulted in significant cost savings and quality improvements for Auto-Trail. By optimising material usage, reducing waste and enhancing panel construction, the company achieved measurable efficiencies in production. Furthermore, the precision and accuracy afforded by CNC routing translated into superior
product quality, reinforcing Auto-Trail’s commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction and reinforcing Auto-Trail’s reputation for excellence.
Employee engagement and job satisfaction
The introduction of automation at Auto-Trail elicited positive responses from employees, who viewed it as an opportunity for professional growth and skill development. Rather than displacing workers, the integration of AXYZ machines empowered employees to adapt to new technologies and enhance their roles within the organisation. As automation freed up time previously spent on manual tasks, employees could redirect their efforts towards innovation, collaboration and continuous improvement. While the current workforce size remains stable, the skill requirements have evolved. Auto-Trail has invested in training and development to ensure employees are well-equipped to operate the new technology efficiently.
Challenges and solutions
The integration of AXYZ machines presented Auto-Trail with several challenges, including spatial constraints and process optimisation. However, through meticulous planning, iterative testing and collaborative problem-solving, the company successfully overcame these obstacles. Specialised equipment, such as customised cages for transporting parts and comprehensive adjustments
“The INFINITE router is a highly configurable CNC machine that is suitable for one-off, small batch production as well as high volume and high productivity applications”
to bills of materials (BOMs), cut lists and drawings ensured a seamless transition to automated production.
Maintenance and future integration
Auto-Trail ensures the smooth operation of AXYZ machines through regular maintenance by onsite engineers and a maintenance contract with AXYZ. Looking ahead, the company remains committed to further integrating automation into its processes, continually evaluating opportunities to optimise production and drive innovation.
Future prospects and automation plans
Auto-Trail V.R. Ltd is continually assessing and integrating automation into their production processes. The company plans to expand the use of automated technologies to enhance other areas of production, aiming for greater efficiency and productivity.
The implementation of AXYZ machines went beyond mere automation; it ushered in a paradigm shift in how Auto-Trail approached its manufacturing processes. Beyond the initial task of replacing the manual cutting of insulation material, the CNC routers enabled the company to reimagine its entire production workflow. By embracing CNC technology, Auto-Trail gained the flexibility to create customshaped parts, optimise component count and improve overall panel construction. The ability to interlink multiple pieces and integrate router cut-outs and wiring grooves directly into panels showcased the versatility and ingenuity of AXYZ machines.
The adoption of AXYZ CNC routers by Auto-Trail V.R. Ltd has significantly transformed their manufacturing landscape. By automating key production processes, Auto-Trail has enhanced operational efficiency, reduced costs and maintained high-quality standards in their motorhomes. The successful integration of AXYZ technology showcases Auto-Trail’s commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction, setting a benchmark in the motorhome manufacturing industry.

Michael Pepper Joinery crafts a bright future with the help of HOMAG
Michael Pepper Joinery Ltd., a bespoke joinery manufacturer specialising in high-quality fire doors, has been a trusted name in the industry for no less than 50 years. They recently invested in HOMAG’s EDGETEQ S-380, an edge banding machine known for its flexibility and precision, which has played an essential role in the futureproofing of the business. Here’s the full story.
Based in Derby, Michael Pepper Joinery comprises a workforce of 33 highlytrained staff operating across three units totalling 13,000 square feet, delivering superior products to diverse sectors including Health, Commercial, Education, Leisure, Residential, and the Ministry of Defence.
Since 1973, the company has stayed true to its client-centric principles, taking pride in the quality of both its products and service. Half a century of experience has culminated in a wealth of knowledge, and Michael Pepper Joinery continues to go from strength to strength; in the last three years, turnover has tripled.
“We were seeking to push growth and
really double-down on what we’re best at,” explains Josh Pepper, Managing Director at Michael Pepper Joinery. “This involved a focus on staff training, various efficiencies in the business, and of course investment in new advanced machinery –including a new edge banding machine.”
Choosing HOMAG: Trust and reliability
Michael Pepper Joinery’s journey with HOMAG began years ago with the acquisition of a 1998 HOMAG edge bander. “It was a great machine that served us very well, right up until the end of its lifecycle,” says Josh. “We have a lot of trust in HOMAG products – we also bought a brand new four-axis CNC in 2021 – so it was an easy choice to stick with them when the time came to invest in a new edge bander.”
Another reason for sticking with HOMAG was the reliability of their service. As Josh explains, “Every door we make has to go through our edge banding machine. If the machine breaks down, it’s a big issue for us. Luckily with HOMAG you get the whole package, which
includes outstanding support; should an issue arise, they work on resolving it as soon as possible – often on the same day.”
EDGETEQ S-380: The perfect fit
Now it was a matter of finding the perfect machine to suit the needs of the business. To that end, HOMAG held indepth discussions with Michael Pepper Joinery and sent a representative to assess their site. “One of the stand-out aspects of HOMAG is that they make every effort to get to know you as a business. This was best exemplified by our HOMAG Sales Manager, who I can’t praise highly enough.
“He clearly knows the machinery inside out, and during his visit he spent a considerable amount of time exploring our needs. He didn’t just want to lump us with the most expensive machine; he wanted to ensure we were getting the right machine. And that’s exactly what we ended up with.
“Interestingly,” Josh continues, “The EDGETEQ S-380 has less functionality
than our previous machine. But that’s the beauty of it; it gives us the exact functionality we need. Being able to get a machine that was so specific to our requirements saved us a lot of money, and plus it’s smaller, freeing up precious workshop space.”
Confidence, accuracy, reliability
The implementation of the EDGETEQ S-380 has been beneficial to Michael Pepper Joinery in a number of ways. Notably, the capabilities of the machine have enabled the company to take on more advanced, higher-paying jobs. “We can now do things with more confidence. There are jobs that before we probably would have turned down, but now actively look for, because we know the potential of the machine and we want to take full advantage of it.”
“There are jobs that before we probably would have turned down, but now actively look for, because we know the potential of the machine and we want to take full advantage of it”
This is largely due to the sheer accuracy of the EDGETEQ S-380, which utilises rigid high-precision linear guides and perfectly coordinated units for a flawless finish. As Josh explains, “Accuracy is crucial to our work – the margin for error in edge banding is notoriously fine. This machine gets it right pretty much every time.”
Reliability is another significant benefit highlighted by Josh. “The edge banding machine is absolutely key to our operation; we literally wouldn’t be able to trade without it. It’s a good thing, therefore, that we can completely rely on the EDGETEQ S-380 to run seamlessly. It’s provided a whole new level of consistency which in itself will increase our production.”
Training and support
Training on the new machine was conducted on-site, ensuring that the staff were well-equipped to handle the nuances of the EDGETEQ S-380. HOMAG’s non-automated support has been a breath of fresh air, with easy access to engineers and prompt on-site assistance when needed. “The fact you can talk to someone, an actual HOMAG engineer, when you need to is great. They do provide remote support, but if required someone will make the trip to our workshop without question. We know we’re in safe hands.”
Looking back – and ahead
The partnership with HOMAG has not only provided Michael Pepper Joinery with a top-tier machine but also with a reliable and supportive business partner. As the business continues to grow, Josh looks forward to further collaborations with HOMAG.
“Naturally, we have plans to continue growing, and there are more HOMAG machines we have our eye on that will align perfectly with the expansion of the business,” he says.
“I would definitely recommend HOMAG to others. Of course you should always do your own research, but I can say for sure the majority of woodworking businesses will find the perfect partner in HOMAG.”

Biesse guarantees flush finishing for washroom provider
Investing in two Rover A CNCs and a Stream A edgebander has given Washroom Washroom a 50% production capacity boost whilst elevating the level of craftsmanship on the company’s luxury restroom schemes.
Business is booming for Washroom Washroom, one of the UK’s leading providers of high specification washrooms, on the back of a surge in commercial property development in the Capital.
“There are office blocks going up everywhere in London, and the developers and tenants all want beautifully designed restrooms that will make a positive impression on visitors and clients,” says Mark Such, Production Manager at the Essex-based company.
“Our reputation for designing, manufacturing and installing luxury washrooms for commercial customers has meant that we have been inundated with projects of this nature.”
Washrooms with a wow factor
The company’s Alto collection is proving particularly popular with this market.
Finished in real wood veneer, this stylish washroom scheme makes a design statement by creating a virtually seamless facade.
Washroom Washroom manufactures all of the carcasses, doors, partitions, walls and vanity units for its collections at its Abridge facility, which houses a fleet of state-of-the-art CNC machines. At the end of 2023, with its workload steadily increasing, the company purchased two new CNCs and an edgebander, giving it much needed capacity expansion.
Total care a priority
Washroom Washroom opted to buy all three machines from Biesse, citing the machinery manufacturer’s Total Care guarantee as the key factor in this decision. This five-year warranty and maintenance programme was an industry first when it was introduced in 2011.
Today, Biesse is proud to claim that it is still the only company in the sector to offer this level of support as standard on all core machines.
“Total Care was a big selling point for us,” says Mark. “Previously we had to take
out breakdown insurance on our CNC machines, which obviously doesn’t come cheap.”
The CNCs purchased by Washroom Washroom are both five-axis Rover A CNCs – flexible, high-performance machining centres designed for businesses who want the capabilities to process a variety of materials and parts quickly and with excellent results. Changeovers are fast with the Rover A; it takes a matter of minutes to switch between jobs.
The Rover A matched Washroom Washroom’s requirement for a machine that could handle chipboard, hardwood, MDF or any other material its customers specify, whilst achieving output of seven or eight cubicles over one eight-to-ten-hour shift.
Strong suction
Washroom Washroom has been particularly impressed with the vacuum system on the Rover A, which has supported an increase in productivity.
“The vacuum system on the Rover A
is really good – much better than we are used to,” says Mark. “The suction is extremely strong, which eliminates vibration and movement of panels during machining. The net result is a better finish and more efficient running of the machine.”
A competitive edge
The edgebander is a Stream A, an automated single-sided edgebander aimed at operations looking to increase their capacity. One of the main reasons Washroom Washroom elected for this machine was the flexibility it offers to switch quickly between solid wood lipping and PVC edging.
“We can change between PVC and hardwood edging in five minutes,” confirms Mark.
Changeover, which involves adjusting the pressure clamp and calling up a new programme, is particularly quick on the Stream A owing to the machine’s design.
“On other models, the gluing station, where the control panel is located, is undercover, whereas on the Stream A it isn’t. This means we don’t have to lift the hood – which cuts the power – to execute a changeover. We can change the machine settings while it is running,” explains Mark.
No compromises on corners
The edgebander is equipped with Biesse’s innovative AR70 high speed corner rounding unit. This NC controlled unit enables users to switch quickly between different radii or a chamfer finish for the corners of the panel, plus it rounds the top and bottom corners in one unit. This
“The CNCs and the edgebander have increased our capacity by 50%, enabling us to take on more work, safe in the knowledge that we can turn it around within the tight timescales our customers often demand”
means that rather than having to change the tooling to accommodate different tape thicknesses or round off the corners, the machine does this automatically, reducing job changeover time.
This level of flexibility is extremely important to Washroom Washroom, whose customers value its responsiveness when issues arise, as Andy Jones, Factory Foreman, explains: “We get a lot of repeat customers because we look after them. If there is a problem, we sort it. We might, for example, get a call from a customer saying they need an extra panel with a PVC edge whilst we are in the middle of a solid wood lipping job. We can switch to PVC and turn that round very quickly indeed because the edgebander is inherently flexible, and it is the same with the CNCs.”
Quality and quantity
From Washroom Washroom’s previous experience, corner rounding units can improve finish at the expense of speed, as they would need to slow the track speed down. However, the company says that with the Stream A, it can still run the belt at 25 m/min.
In addition, all tooling on the Stream A is
NC controlled, which means tooling set-up is both efficient and precise, guaranteeing a high-quality finish from the second the machine starts up.
“With previous machines, it would sometimes take a bit more time to get the finish quality right,” says Andy. “With the Stream A, the finish is where we need it to be straightaway. And the quality of the finish is fantastic.”
50% capacity expansion
As a result of installing the Biesse equipment, Washroom Washroom says it has expanded its cubicle production capacity considerably.
“The CNCs and the edgebander have increased our capacity by 50%, enabling us to take on more work, safe in the knowledge that we can turn it around within the tight timescales our customers often demand. Our business is all about delivering on time and to specification and Biesse’s approach to engineering, which balances the need to maximise uptime with the need to be flexible, supports that,” says Andy.

ZwickRoell supports IKEA’s sustainable commitments
IKEA, the Swedish furniture company was founded in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad. The company originally started as a small mail-order company selling household products such as pens, wallets and picture frames. In the 1950s, IKEA began producing furniture. They introduced the concept of reducing assembly and transportation costs by selling furniture in flat packs and allowing customers to assemble items themselves.
This novel concept was a great success and contributed significantly to the company’s global expansion. Today, IKEA is known worldwide for its wide range of affordable and quality furniture and home accessories. It operates more than 400 stores in over 50 countries and employs more than 200,000 people.
IKEA is committed to producing sustainable furniture and plans to increase the proportion of recycled material in its products to actively contribute to environmental protection. By using recycled materials, IKEA aims to offer environmentally friendly products that meet customer needs while minimising the impact on the environment.
To ensure that the quality of its products remains high despite the use of recycled materials, IKEA invests in research and development to understand and continuously optimise the properties and performance of these materials. These efforts are reflected in IKEA’s long-term vision to produce quality furniture that is not only environmentally friendly, but also ensures excellent customer satisfaction and contributes to a more sustainable lifestyle.
To determine the properties of the recycled materials required for product development, the company installed
“To determine the properties of the recycled materials required for product development, the company installed a ZwickRoell electrodynamic testing machine at its headquarters in Sweden”
a ZwickRoell electrodynamic testing machine at its headquarters in Sweden. The machine enables high-precision testing under axial and torsional loads. The new material data obtained from these tests are used for calculations in computer systems in which new products are designed. The computers then calculate the strength of the product, enabling digital and virtual product development.
Previously, IKEA’s quality developers could only perform simple loading tests until the samples broke. The new ZwickRoell machine will facilitate more extensive tests due to its flexibility and versatility. Dynamic tests can also be carried out to obtain detailed results that can be used to modify materials to ensure
that product quality is maintained and manufactured goods are fit for purpose which saves IKEA both time and money.
“We have high demands in our development department. That’s why we carried out a thorough feasibility study,” says Marko Kokkonen, Test Development Engineer at IKEA. “Thanks to the good cooperation with ZwickRoell’s demonstration laboratory in Germany, which was quick and accommodating, we were able to make a well-founded and very good decision.
“Other important factors that led to our decision were the strong local support and service provided by our local ZwickRoell organisation,” Marko adds. www.zwickroell.com www.ikea.com

Ostermann has the matching edgings
With the One World Collection 2024, Swiss Krono AG has just presented its new collection for interior design. Carpenters/cabinet makers looking for suitable edgings for the boards’ narrow surfaces will find them at Ostermann.
Our living environments have changed significantly since the launch of the last One World Collection in 2020. Pressing societal issues such as climate protection, sustainability and health have now taken centre stage in furnishing-related questions, as well. In addition, people are working more from home, which means that living space is quickly transformed into working space and back again.
The new One World Collection 2024 from Swiss Krono AG responds to existing trends and offers a new transnational basic collection with 88 decor and surface combinations that match the current trend. As always, Ostermann reacted quickly and allocated suitable furniture edgings. These are available from stock in standard widths of 23, 33, 43 and 100mm. Plus, 100 mm edgings can be cut to any

other desired width on request. Processors whose edgebanding machines work with zero bondline technologies can receive their edgings with a functional layer specially adapted to the technology at short notice. All information about the edgings of the new One World Collection 2024 can also be found under the search term “#Highlights07” on the Ostermann website www.ostermann.eu. To help users select and combine surfaces, the Swiss Krono experts have identified four different furnishing trends and assigned corresponding surfaces to them:
The Me-Shed: relaxation and cosiness
One furnishing trend was named “The MeShed” by Swiss Krono. This trend focuses on the desire for relaxation and mental health. In addition to many plain colours in matt green tones, there is a striking number of walnut decors. A highlight is the Art Deco Walnut decor with its delicate golden lines between walnut inlays, which visually simulates a threedimensional cube structure. Ostermann has the matching ABS edgings in its range. Another remarkable design is Calm Walnut Brown. As the name suggests, it is a somewhat calmer, dark walnut decor. Here, too, it is worth taking a look at the matching Ostermann edging.
Conscious
home: nature and well-being
The second trend is labelled “Conscious Home” by Swiss Krono. It stands for our growing closeness to nature and appears
in the collection with many bright, natural colours and materials. Examples are the surfaces Coco Tweed Cream or Heyday Beige. The edgings are now available at Ostermann.
Playful spaces: individuality and bold experimentation
Behind the furnishing trend known as “playful spaces” are decors that deliberately bypass the mainstream. The combination of bold colours, different textures and material reproductions creates furniture that transmit a cheerful, optimistic energy. For furniture with a “wow” effect, Swiss Krono often uses the Terrazzo Fresh surface, a lively terrazzo decor. The Ostermann experts recommend a combination with boards in the new plain colour Granit Grey. If you enter the board name into the search field at www.ostermann.eu, you will receive a recommendation for the edging with just a few clicks.
Responsive furniture:
Throwaway mentality was yesterday. The “Responsive Furniture” trend is characterised by modular, flexible furniture that creates multifunctional spaces. This furnishing style is based on neutral plain colours and restrained decors that can be flexibly combined to form a balanced colour scheme. As edging highlights, the Ostermann experts recommend the ABS edgings for the Swiss Krono decors Stonetex Beige or Soft Chestnut Light. www.ostermann.eu

A sprint to the finish line
Picture this. You’ve just won a six-figure contract to manufacturer interior wall and ceiling panels for a prestigious, multi-million-pound hotel conversion in London. The brief is set, and your start date is imminent but your existing edgebander doesn’t have the capabilities required to complete the job. Who do you count on to supply the right machinery at short notice? For high-end interiors company, Bulgaro, it was Holz-Her UK who was able to supply and install a Sprint 1327 Door edgebander (formally the Sprint 1327 Massiv) within seven days.
The project, when completed in 2025, will see a famous London landmark transformed into a luxury hotel and necessitates the manufacture of thousands of veneered wall and ceiling panels made from Fermacell, a fireresistant, multi-purpose building board. “It’s a notoriously difficult material to machine,” explains Matthew Saywell, Bulgaro’s CNC Department Manager. “It’s heavy. An 18mm board weighs 80kg. It’s very fragile until it’s finished and as soon as it is cut-to-size, a fine dust sits
“Following a successful demonstration at their Abingdon showroom, Holz-Her UK were able to source, deliver and install a new Sprint 1327 Door edgebander to Bulgaro in less than a week”
Sprint
on the surface that you simply can’t get rid of. This dust means conventional hot melt and PUR machines equipped with roller applicators struggle with the dusty, fibrous board.”
Matthew continues, “Our existing edgebander couldn’t apply the right adhesion because of the glue roller system on board. To complete this project, we would have ended up hand lipping and trimming each panel. This would have taken far too much time. We needed an edgebander that could not only offer a PUR gluing system that could work effectively with Fermacell, but also one that could apply solid lippings to a variety of panel sizes. For this project, panels could range from 300mm squared to 3000mm x 1200mm and work pieces in thicknesses between 12-18mm. To maintain their fire-resistant design, we also needed to apply solid wood tapes
The Sprint Door is designed to apply up to 15mm solid lippings to panels measuring 60mm thick, making it ideal for fire door manufacturing
and lippings between 1-10mm.” But there was one more critical element to the company’s brief. Matthew says, “We needed it straightaway.”
Bulgaro had been speaking to HolzHer, along with other machinery manufacturers, in 2023 about replacing their existing edgebander for a larger, more comprehensive model. However, this contract propelled their plans.
Following a successful demonstration at their Abingdon showroom, Holz-Her UK were able to source, deliver and install a new Sprint 1327 Door edgebander to Bulgaro in less than a week.
Not only did this fit the timescale perfectly, the Sprint 1327 Door was the ideal model for the growing company. Built with a heavy duty MG705 edge feeder, it’s a robust piece of kit that is designed to work with weighty and challenging materials. It also includes Holz-Her’s patented Glu Jet gluing system which provides outstanding results irrespective of the substrate. Designed to switch effortlessly between PUR and EVA in just four minutes, it also boasts a three-minute heat up time, adaptive gluing pressures, automatic glue quantity control and a repeatable zero glue line.
“The gluing system won us over straight away and was the best we’d seen by far,” admits Matthew. “The operators get a real time view of how much glue they have left and how many jobs they can complete before needing to replace the cartridge. It’s also really easy to clean and offers a neat, consistent finish. Cleaning is also as easy as it gets. On our older edgebander, we have to clean the Glu Pot. This often requires two people to do it. Now, you simply press a button and the automatic cleaning cycle starts. It’s child’s play.”
The edgebander also offers Intelligent Tool Correction that allows the operator to make fine adjustments from 0.1–0.01mm to the profiling and fa.s.t technology that enables you to run different machining processes at the same time – making it possible to switch between different programmes without the need for the piece to exit the machine first.
“Once this project is completed, the new edgebander will also help us grow our fire door products and will give us more control over the cost, lead time and quality of our manufacturing processes”
“This has to be one of the best features on the machine,” says Matthew. “We have so many size variations to work with, but we have complete confidence in the accurate set-up of each job. One stack of panels may need a 1mm lipping applied and the next may need a 10mm lipping applied. The operator simply needs to read the label and input the data via the touch screen display or with the aid of a barcode scanner to change the measurements – all while the existing boards are still on the track. The time this saves is huge and there’s no manual setup or downtime.
Thanks to the machine’s intuitive features and easy set-up, the edgebander’s breaking in period has been very short. “Holz-Her trained two operators on the machine and they picked it up very quickly. The software has been designed for ease of use and it just makes sense. With so few young people entering the industry, the simple operation of a machine is always in the back of my mind. Nothing will replace the skill and knowledge of an experienced joiner but simplifying our processes can only benefit us going forward.”
Whilst the project is still ongoing, the Sprint has now been running for 12 weeks. “It’s safe to say the edgebander has paid for itself already,” says Matthew. “We’ve used 15,000 metres of edging to date and that’s without the need to run double shifts. It works a solid 10-hour day and runs up to 18m/min. If we were edging a straightforward material like MDF, we could add another 30-40% to our current capacity quite easily without increasing our overheads. Once this project is completed, the new edgebander will also help us grow our fire door products and will give us more control over the cost, lead time and quality of our manufacturing processes.”
Matthew concludes, “The professionalism shown in this very quick exchange was fantastic and everything went like clockwork. As for the edgebander, it hasn’t disappointed. The gluing system really makes this machine. It’s head and shoulders above the rest and has ultimately made this project possible for us to complete. We couldn’t recommend the Sprint or the Glu Jet more highly and look forward to working with Holz-Her again.”

With their feel for the design trends of tomorrow, GRASS’ product developers have successfully delivered the Tiomos M-Series. This now includes three different versions for sophisticated door applications. Here, we focus on the Mirror door applications.
One system – three new door applications
This premium comfort from GRASS, which has become so essential to highquality furniture design, is a feature of all three versions – Tiomos Mirro, Tiomos M9 and Tiomos M0.
“With the three front connections we

have achieved three genuine milestones for special design solutions in the Tiomos family,” explains product developer, Tarek Utturkar. “Tiomos was developed in response to the greatest challenges in contemporary bathroom and living spaces.”
Tiomos Mirro for glass and mirror doors
GRASS has created an elegant solution with the front connection for high-quality glass and mirror doors. The hinge system is attached with an eccentric screw to a self-adhesive adapter on the door and provides permanent and firm stability for fragile materials – without any need to drill the glass.
Unique: with soft-close damping
In addition to the mature fastening technology that has a light, floating look on transparent glass surfaces, Tiomos Mirro also enables the use of track-proven, fully integrated soft-close damping for the
finest glass and mirror doors. The entire damping technology is concealed inside the hinge. The design of the hinge remains identical – irrespective of whether soft-close damping is incorporated. This offers a clear statement for uncompromising furniture design and a unique option that underlines the transparent character of the furniture, while respecting the characteristics of the chosen material.
High-tech functionality and consistent design language for contemporary furniture
Although the applications for the three hinge versions are very specific, they all feature the unrivalled Tiomos comfort. In addition to the side, depth and stepless height adjustment, this also includes the outstanding kinematics that makes furniture doors open smoothly and extremely easily.

This saves energy, resources and protects the environment. This makes the classic Nova Pro Scala drawer a sustainable design component for all those who value sophisticated furniture design.
Small but mighty – the GRX38
Guy-Raymond is proud to still be manufacturing all its products in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, after 75 years in business. These include castors, adjustable feet, inserts, ferrules and many other components.
The GRX38 castor, with a wheel diameter of 38mm, is small but mighty, saving on space with its low build height while carrying up to 60kg per castor.
Freewheeling and footbrake models are available, with either hard wheels or soft tyres, making the GRX38 a great option for furniture, beds, desking, cabinetry and many other applications.
The GRX brake pedal design not only looks elegant, but also makes your product more user-friendly as the foot brake can be released from above, which is far easier than having to lift it from underneath. Various fixings are available and there is a choice of four standard colours.
The GRX38 was designed in house by Guy-Raymond’s own Design, Research and Development team and all the injection moulded plastic parts and metal parts are made in Guy-Raymond’s factory. The castor has been tested in house to EN12528 (the European standard for furniture castors), so you know this is a product you can rely on.

Combilift introduces the Combi Safe-Lift
Off the back of its 25-year celebrations, Combilift is anticipating another successful year, full of innovation. One product that the company feels brings great potential for the future is the Combi Safe-Lift. This anti-overload device enables operators to avoid the pitfalls of potential overloading, which can have serious consequences if it occurs.
Forklift operators who are insufficiently aware of the load they are lifting and the risks that come with exceeding the forkliftrated capacity not only compromise their own safety, but also place everyone working around them at serious risk.
There are several factors that can influence a forklift truck to become overloaded and these include load centre, weight of load, lift height and the type of load. The load centre, which is the distance from the face of the fork to the centre of gravity of the load plays a crucial part. The position of the load centre can also vary depending on the type of load being lifted, for example liquid loads or non-uniform loads.
“The operator can instantly see from the green, amber and red ‘traffic light’ signalling when there is a risk of overloading or when the forks are not fully engaged for example”
The Combi Safe-Lift incorporates a strain sensor on the mast section and a lift cut-out valve on the hydraulic line to disable lifting if the unit is being potentially overloaded.
There is an audible alarm which warns the operator of an overload situation, and a load moment indicator is fitted to the dashboard in the cab. The operator can instantly see from the green, amber and red ‘traffic light’ signalling when there is a risk of overloading or when the forks are not fully engaged for example, and take appropriate action.
“We offer the Combi Safe-Lift as an option at the moment, but we believe that this simple and cost-effective system should become a standard option on all counterbalance trucks in future,” says MD, Martin McVicar.
“Fitting a straightforward device such as the Combi Safe-Lift is an effective way to reduce risks for the operator and other personnel, and also to avoid product damage as well as costly repairs.”

Storing building materials safely and economically for the long term
Dach Walter, one of the leading mediumsized specialist roofing dealers in Thuringia, has expanded its storage capacity with a pallet rack from OHRA. Equipped with metal gratings, it offers flexible storage options for a wide variety of materials. But this is only the most recent project – Dach Walter has been continuously investing in OHRA racking for over 15 years. The wholesaler for roofing materials is thus responding to the constantly growing range of materials in the industry, which places very different demands on storage.
Since its foundation in 1992, Dach Walter has been supplying its customers in Thuringia with building materials for roofs and façades. This also means more than 30 years of experience with racking solutions. “Racking systems
made from folded sheet metal profiles are often damaged during operation. And replacing them is time-consuming,” says Managing Director, Thomas Walter. Since 2009, the company has therefore relied on racking from OHRA, one of the leading manufacturers of heavy-duty storage technology in Europe.
The pallet and cantilever racking from the Kerpen-based manufacturer is made from solid, hot-rolled steel profiles and is therefore characterised by its high loadbearing capacity, impact resistance and durability.
Customised racking solutions in demand
The range of customised racking solutions that OHRA offers was also important. This is the only way to store the different materials efficiently. For example, some of the pallet racking
is equipped with metal gratings to accommodate non-standardised disposable pallets. In the cantilever racking, cantilever arms with a loadbearing capacity of up to 1,200 kilograms each enable the safe storage of timber up to 13 metres long.
Weather protection included
“Our customers also expect more and more building materials to be stored protected from the weather,” says Thomas Walter. This is made possible, among other things, by the rack supported buildings that OHRA has built at both of the company’s sites. The cantilever racks also serve as a load-bearing structure for the roof and walls – this is cheaper and quicker to realise than building a separate building in which the racks are then placed.
OHRA also fitted additional racking externally with an integrated roof. The company also provided the structural analysis and planning required for the approval, so that the process could be completed quickly.
Teamwork to find the right storage solution
The racking manufacturer also worked closely with Dach Walter on the planning of the new branch in Petersberg – a former car dealership. The building presented special challenges due to its unfavourable geometry and the load-

bearing columns on the usable area. Together with the forklift specialists from Kirchner & Partner, Weimar, a customised utilisation plan was developed for the building. The columns were integrated into the racking, and the use of an Aisle Master articulated forklift truck enables the warehouse to be operated efficiently even with narrow racking aisles.
The combination of the technical

properties of the racking, the broad portfolio, the customisability of the storage solutions and the planning expertise continue to convince Thomas Walter of OHRA. “We have found a sustainable supplier for long-term, safe and economical storage solutions,” concludes Thomas. info@ohra.co.uk www.ohra.co.uk

UTIS machines help to rehome Ukranian families
UTIS AMF has supplied three machines to Divario GmbH’s new factory in Ukraine –the 1050mm wide thicknesser, a 500mm wide surface planer and a three-axiscontrolled spindle moulder.
The Divario factory has been set up in the Vinnytsia region of Ukraine to manufacture two sizes of timber houses of a Swiss design. From August 2024, the modules will also be built in the Kherson region.
The largest house design is 35m2 complete with fully insulated walls and roof, windows and doors and is fully kitted out so the family can move into their new home immediately.
The timber houses are very often installed in the garden next to the families’ destroyed houses.
The first house was made in the Swiss factory of Uffer AG by the Ukrainian workforce where they were trained on all aspects of the manufacturing process.
A production hall with an indoor crane was dismantled in Switzerland and shipped to Ukraine for the new factory.

All you need is space. Together, HPP and Blum can provide it!
Space is a valuable commodity for consumers, and together Hill’s Panel Products (HPP) and its trading partner Blum can satisfy that demand with a range of innovative solutions.
Over the coming weeks and months, the two renowned companies will be highlighting products that prove ‘all you need is space’ – especially to improve quality of living and/or if space is precious.
The campaign is being launched with Blum’s pull-out shelf lock, which provides a secure hold for fully extending pullout shelves, thus creating an extra work surface and the many benefits that can provide.
This discreet, space-saving mechanism is perfect for use in kitchens, bathrooms, living and utility rooms where pull-out shelves are particularly handy. For example, creating a sturdy, additional worktop for things such as kitchen
gadgets and appliances, or for placing files on in a home office, which can then quickly disappear into the cabinet when no longer needed.
In a utility room, a pull-out shelf means your customer could quickly and conveniently load and unload the washing by enabling a laundry basket to be placed directly in front of the washing machine with the open shelf held securely in place for as long as it’s needed.
All Blum pull-out shelves open with a gentle push. The lock engages securely on both sides when the pull-out shelf is fully extended and holds it firmly in place. It can easily be released with one hand thanks to a synchronisation shaft. It unlocks by simply lifting the lever.
And Blum’s BLUMOTION soft close mechanism means every shelf closes softly and effortlessly no matter how hard it’s slammed shut.
“The campaign is being launched with Blum’s pull-out shelf lock, which provides a secure hold for fully extending pull-out shelves, thus creating an extra work surface and the many benefits that can provide”
Easy to install
You can upgrade a pull-out shelf with a pull-out shelf lock in just a few steps:
• Locking unit and synchronisation shaft – attach the locking unit to the synchronisation shaft. It has to be flush with the pull-out shelf.
• Fitting and template rolled into one – the locking unit and latching element also serve as a template. Place the screws in the predefined fixing positions. You can use either chipboard or system screws for fixing the latching element.
HPP – official Blum partner

Branching out with Combilift
Following the launch of five new models in its 25th anniversary year in 2023, Irish materials handling specialist Combilift has already announced the premiere of yet another innovation. The Combi-CLL (Container Log-Loader) was recently exhibited at EXPO Richmond 2024, one of America’s leading trade shows for the forest products industry.
The concept and operation of the Combi-CLL is based on that of the Combi-CSS (Container Slip Sheet), which
has been successfully deployed across numerous industries for the mechanised loading of long products such as packs of timber or steel into containers. This not only reduces the risk of accidents to the workforce and product damage but is incredibly fast compared to other methods – a 40’ container can be fully loaded by one operator in under six minutes.
The 30t capacity electro-hydraulically powered Combi-CLL offers the same
“We’re all about bespoke. Different contours, radii, profiles, and materials. Customers just want something out of the ordinary”
benefits when it comes to speed, safety and product integrity. It was designed to address the requirements of exporters of softwood and hardwood logs, the nature and shape of which make them much trickier to handle than palletised or packed products. Logs can be individually lifted and pre-loaded into a robust, high-sided metal “tub” before the patented pushpull mechanism powers the tub into the container. Once inside, the hydraulic dropdown hatch is closed and locked into position to hold the logs securely in place, and the tub is retracted to allow the logs to settle within the container.
Once again, Combilift has come up with a customer-led solution that also has potential for applications beyond the forestry and timber industries. www.combilift.com/combi-css-logloader/

Shopfitting business saves money by keeping waste out of landfill
A Yorkshire shopfitting manufacturing company has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to reduce its carbon footprint and save money on its operating costs.
Your Brand Partner (YBP) Limited manufactures all aspects of shopfitting products, including reception desks and display units from its 7000sq. ft premises in Batley, Yorkshire.
Having experienced the benefits of wood waste heaters at a previous company, director of YBP Group, Adrian Walker decided the time was right for the business to invest in one, so contacted Wood Waste Technology.
Following a site survey and quote, the business purchased a WT5. It was installed by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers, to provide muchneeded heating for the workshop in winter, but also to provide free disposal of the large amount of waste wood generated from the manufacturing process.
“We’re delighted with our decision to invest in a wood waste heater,” Adrian says. “It’s a great piece of kit which will keep us warm and save us money. We especially like the energy saving aspects, and the fact that our waste gets used productively, rather than going to landfill. I purchased two wood waste heaters from Kurt at Wood Waste Technology many years ago for another business, so it was a no-brainer to source another wood waste heater from him.”
YBP’s manufacturing unit is based in an old mill, with a mezzanine floor and two roller shutter doors, so could be a difficult space to keep warm in the winter months before the heater was installed. And when the business recently doubled the size of its premises, the team was able to duct some of the warm air from the heater through into the new section, to heat the new manufacturing area too.
“I
purchased two wood waste heaters from Kurt at Wood Waste Technology many years ago for another business, so it was a nobrainer to source another wood waste heater from him”
YBP also purchased a summer heat dump option with the heater, allowing the business to continue to burn waste wood throughout the summer, as the heat is diverted from the factory into atmosphere.
MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft says: “We’re so pleased that Adrian came back to us after all these years to source a brand new wood waste heater. A large percentage of our sales come through referral, and we have many customers who come back to us time and time again. It’s great that the team at YBP can dispose of waste in a more environmentally friendly way and get free heating for the business at the same time.”
Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand-fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey
and design, as well as manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance.
The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and is proud to claim that it supplies “genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers”.
In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems –a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs.

Hidden flexibility – the T45 Contour
With the T45 Contour, MARTIN offers the unique opportunity to carry out profiling work up to 25mm deep and 630mm wide quickly and safely with a throughfeed thicknessing machine, in addition to all thicknessing work. The machine thus offers the user previously unimaginable flexibility in production.
From the outside, the impressive flexibility of the Contour machine is almost unrecognisable; even “under the bonnet” you have to know where to look to see what this machine can do.
After all, a thickness planer can do one thing above all –plane workpieces to an exact thickness. However, unlike a “normal” thickness planer, the T45 Contour offers the option of full-surface profiling. This means that this machine can be used to quickly and easily produce profiled seating surfaces, ribbed decking, textured panelling, precisely round rods up to 50mm in diameter and much more. An enormous increase in the product range for the contractor.
The Contour model is equipped with a cutterhead that can accommodate back-toothed profile knives, in addition to the usual four TERSA knife holders. The machine can be set up quickly and precisely thanks to a special setting aid.
“Unlike a ‘normal’ thickness planer, the T45 Contour offers the option of full-surface profiling”
In addition to the TERSA knives, commercially available corrugated knives, which can be easily ground in by any grinding service, are inserted into this cutter head.
Special safety devices ensure that profiling with this machine is just as safe as classic planing. However, it is important that the high level of safety does not come at the expense of perfect operability.
The materials are transported through the machine on exact tracks by means of easy-to-install feed trays. Depending on the profile width, two or even three different profiles can be produced with
one machine setting. Even perfect round bars from approximately 4-50mm in diameter can be produced in just two passes.
Profiling to a width of up to 630mm opens up unimagined possibilities for the entrepreneur. Possibilities that were previously unthinkable or at least only possible with a multiple of the financial outlay. The machine has also already found numerous friends in the plastics processing industry.

Production advantage with new software for Salvador
Salvador, a leading manufacturer of automatic crosscut saws, continues to enjoy market dominance through its continued commitment to research and development. Daltons Wadkin, sole distributor for Salvador in the UK and Ireland, is pleased to announce the latest advancement with all new control software and operator interface. The new software is available for all Salvador automatic crosscut saws including the SuperPush, SuperAngle and SuperCut models. An industrial PC with a familiar Windows operating system allows easy connectivity to customers’ networks for the transfer of cutting lists. Further deskilling operator requirements, cutting lists generated remotely now include all machine parameters necessary for the job; lengths, widths, pusher speed, cutting speed etc. New width detection allows multiple widths of material to be included in a single cutting list.
The operator interface with the machine is now even more intuitive with a larger 22” high-resolution screen and redesigned graphics. On start-up, the machine will automatically reference itself, ready for high-output precision cutting. For machines feeding the opposite hand, left to right, the graphics will match. To support operators removing material from the machine out feed can opt for a second display screen with dedicated outfeed graphics to clearly identify workpieces are they come off the machine.
Printing options have also been enhanced. Now with the ability to print before the workpiece is cut, straight and angle cutting machines can include direct inkjet printing in addition to separate label printing if needed.
Daltons Wadkin is continually looking for ways to improve machine support and maximise the value added for its customers. Salvador’s new software
leans into this with real-time ethernet connection to all installed peripherals enabling advanced remote monitoring and diagnostics.
“Supporting our customers quickly and efficiently is our top priority,” confirms Managing Director, Alex Dalton. “We continue to expand our field-based engineering team and in-house support desk to meet the demands of our growing customer base. Salvador’s new software will give us even more insight for troubleshooting and the ability to fix issues without a visit, or if needed, an engineer’s first call out.”
For companies looking to expand their production capabilities with the oversight of Industry 4.0, Salvador’s automatic crosscut saws now have the option to feed real-time processing data to a SQL database for monitoring through third party software such as Microsoft’s PowerBI.
Daltons Wadkin welcomes customers to visit its forthcoming annual Wood & Panel Machinery Show in October for live demonstrations on the full Salvador range of crosscut saws, including the all-new software.

Maximise your wood waste utilisation
Chris Franklin, MD at Ranheat Engineering Ltd – a leading UK manufacturer of wood combustion equipment – continues his series of articles exclusively for Furniture and Joinery Production. This month, he looks at alternative uses for the energy produced when burning your woodwaste.
The obvious use for wood-waste energy is to space heat a factory, but in the UK, where we don’t get harsh, cold winters many people utilise their wood-waste energy in other ways. Below are some examples of other ways to utilise your energy from wood-waste.
Kiln drying of timber
When trees are harvested, they have a high moisture content, The traditional drying method was to slice the tree into planks and then stack them with thin sticks between the planks and let the timber “air dry”. This is a slow process and
“Ranheat use specialist Air Handling Units also known as AHUs. As well as heating the air they also have filters fitted so the replacement air is clean as well as warm”
depending on the thickness of the timber could take months or even years.
The alternative is a kiln to artificially dry the timber. The next consideration is the quality of the timber you are aiming to produce. Joinery quality timber is different and requires the use of specialist kiln manufacturers such as Kiln Services Ltd. To produce top-quality joinery, standard timber requires a heat and vent kiln. As the name suggests, the kiln heats and then vents to release the moisture from the kiln.
The timber is then “misted” with water to re-wet the timber. If you try and heat the wood too quickly you will get splits and shakes.
Traditionally a powerful heat exchanger
with an oil-fired boiler would be used but with the move away from conventional fuels enter the wood-waste burning boiler. From a round trunk of a tree when sawed you get waney edge boards. Planks that still have the bark and profile of the tree. This can be chipped and used as the fuel for the boiler.
Heat treatment of pallets
When the United Kingdom left the European single market, changes to the pallet industry came in overnight. Goods moving between EU members on pallets had no requirement for pallets to be heat treated. Goods coming from a nonmember into an EU member country must be on a heat-treated pallet.
So, what is heat treatment? Basically, the pallet has to be heated to a given core temperature and then held at that temperature for a given period of time. This is not the same as a kiln-dried pallet.
Some pharmaceuticals need to be transported on a dry pallet to protect the goods. Heat treatment is to kill any boring insects that may be present in the timber that the pallet is made from. This is to prevent the spread of the insects from infecting trees in other countries.
The scheme in the UK is administered by the Forestry Commission and each site that heat treats pallets has a unique identifying number so the source of the pallets is identifiable. Heat treatment is carried out in a kiln but with a different control system and a record kept of each batch. The control of a heat treatment system is not as complex as a heat and vent kiln.
In many cases, broken pallets are used as the source of the fuel for a wood-waste boiler system. A pallet manufacturer will often deliver hundreds of pallets to a customer and as a “service” take away old broken pallets, which are an excellent source of free fuel when put through a woodchipper. Many are also fitted with a magnetic nail collector and the nails are sold as scrap to give further income.
Replacement air for spray facilities
Solvent-based finishes were traditionally used in the UK woodworking industry. The trend, to reduce solvent emissions was to change to water-based paints and finishes. Water-based paints need drying and extraction from spray booths.
The replacement air to the spray facility needs to be at a given temperature, normally in the low 20s C so even on a summer’s day in the mornings and evenings heat is needed to raise the
temperature of the replacement air. The air also needs to be dry. This process load is large in the winter but still needed in the summer.
Ranheat use specialist Air Handling Units also known as AHUs. As well as heating the air they also have filters fitted so the replacement air is clean as well as warm. Without specialist replacement air, the spray facility will draw air from the factory which may not be clean, even if it is heated. Most modern robotic spray systems come with AHUs installed on the equipment, most of which require an oil or gas-fired boiler. These can be replaced by a wood-waste boiler.
Drying of wood for the domestic woodstove market
There has been a huge increase in the need for drying firewood for the domestic market for use in wood burning stoves. The government introduced schemes, that any wood sold as fuel for the domestic market must be below 20% moisture content.
Once again this is carried out in a kilntype arrangement where logs, normally split and cut to size are stacked in metal cages or stillages, then heated to dry the logs. This is basically an insulated box that heat is blown into, some are direct fired with all of the products of combustion going into the box but also gives the possibility for a warm air variant of a wood burner to be used.
A lot of the drying of domestic logs is carried out using oil-fired burners as they tend to be located in remote locations “off grid”. This almost seems to defeat the object of using domestic logs as a source of heat when the fuel needs oil to dry it down.
