Welcome to our September issue!

With the threat of a “painful” Autumn budget looming, the UK’s manufacturing industry urgently waits for further details of the Government’s strategy. Having fallen out of the top 10 manufacturing nations for the first time since the Industrial Revolution, the emphasis on creating a cohesive and ambitious industrial plan for the UK has perhaps never been so pivotal.

We can all agree on the tremendous potential of this sector to perform on an international stage, were it to have the appropriate funding and support. In particular, investment in green technologies, the movement towards digitalisation and Industry 4.0, and an ability to remain agile when it comes to international trade relationships will all have a significant bearing on its long-term standing and prosperity on the world stage.

Regardless of the political climate, the projects, people and products in the following pages are a testament to the passion and tremendous skill level within the furniture manufacturing industry as a whole.

From page 18, find details of Daltons Wadkin’s 2024 Wood & Panel Machinery Show, as well as numerous open house events taking place this month, hosted by the likes of AES, Biesse, Kundig and J & C O’Meara.

Amongst others, our installations section explores the far-reaching impact of AXYZ routers on the educational offering of Strathallan School in Edinburgh, as well as the improvement in efficiency and capacity See Limited has experienced as a result of integrating HOMAG’s STORETEQ P-500 storage system and SAWTEQ S-300 panel dividing saw.

Elsewhere, MEDITE SMARTPLY’s Head of Business Development, Roly Ward, fills us in on the company’s impressive range of moisture-resistant MDF panels (p. 52) and Mirka’s Business Sector Manager for Wood, UK, Neil Newbrook, discusses the unique attributes and benefits of Ultimax® Ligno (p.66). Happy reading!

By a quick connection to the link verify.catas.com and by simply “uploading” the test report, in a few seconds, the system verifies the digital signature, a well-established and internationally recognised tool present in all Catas test reports, ensuring the integrity of the document.

the group’s authorised distributor network and e-shop.

SCM is also supporting the equity crowdfunding campaign launched by Springa to finance its R&D activities and the industrial production of the CNC robot by signing a PFI worth

Matt Long joins Ferwood UK as Key Accounts Manager

Matt Long has been appointed as Key Account Manager at Ferwood UK. With over 35 years in the woodworking industry and bringing a wealth of industry and sales experience to the business, his role will see him manage key accounts in the UK market and develop new and existing relationships with customers across the country.

Beginning his career as an Electrical engineer in the late 1980’s, Matt gained valuable technical experience installing and servicing woodworking machinery for Wadkin Agencies, before turning his hand to machine demonstrating and software training at Busellato UK. He

thrived in a customer-facing role and with a proven technical background, the transition from engineer to technical sales came easily.

His first sales role began in the early 2000s when Ferwood UK’s CEO John Wilson recruited him to work for Machinery Sales Ltd (MSL). Subsequently, Matt moved to Homag UK in 2010 and continued to forge a successful career in sales.

May is a high point for timber imports in 2024

May 2024 was the best month of 2024 to date for timber import volumes, according to the latest Timber Development UK (TDUK) statistics. Although volumes in May 2024 haven’t quite matched the high point of May 2023, at 897,000m3 it remains the best month of 2024 so far.

Overall, timber import volumes have weakened over the last two years. A sluggish UK economy and a reduction in construction output have contributed to these weaker volumes, but the long-term trend for timber and panel imports remains positive.

The overall performance of UK imports is weighted heavily towards softwood imports, which account for 62% of all volumes. Softwood imports were 4% lower, but some products have seen import levels grow. Planed spruce imports (45% of all softwood imports) were 3% higher, driven by good growth from Sweden (+4%), Latvia (+17%), Ireland (+18%) and Norway (+104%). Price reductions of between 5% and 15% have contributed to growth from Latvia, Ireland and Norway, while Sweden has achieved good growth while

maintaining prices. Hardwood imports in the first five months of 2024, meanwhile, were around 20,000m3 lower than during the same period in 2023. Three-quarters of this reduction is due to lower volumes from Latvia and the USA. France, Estonia, Romania, Cameroon and the Congo Republic have all increased their volumes exported to the UK in 2024 to date, albeit by relatively small amounts.

Blum ends the financial year with a turnover of 2.3 billion euros

Family-owned business, Blum, from Vorarlberg, Austria, has recorded 2,297.16 million euros in turnover for the 2023/2024 financial year, which ended 30th June 2024. With a slight decrease of -1.2%, turnover has remained consistent with the previous financial year.

“The first few months of the last financial year were challenging for us and the industry as a whole,” comments Philipp Blum, Managing Director of the Blum Group. “However, there were some positive signs in the second half of the year and we are noticing improvements, even though the market environment remains challenging. The cost of raw materials, energy and staff in particular is currently very high.”

The effects of inflation and associated price increases are having an effect on end users, who are more cautious about investments and new purchases. This is resulting in a slight decline in the level of equipment in kitchens, which in turn has an impact on fittings manufacturers. Managing Director Martin Blum, however, also sees this as an opportunity: “This difficult market situation prompts us to really address our customers’ needs. We have 9,294 employees around the world all working together to keep Blum moving forwards and inspire our customers with innovative products.”

While the situation remains challenging in Northern and Central Europe, Blum has noted positive market development in Eastern Europe – despite the difficult conditions. In the regions of North and South America, Asia and the Pacific there is a stable sideways trend, however, the Chinese economy in particular is very slow to recover. The Middle East and Africa region continues to perform well.

“We are optimistic that we can generate momentum with the launch and marketing of our

“Regardless of the economic developments, we will put all our energy, ingenuity and innovative strength into remaining a future-proof partner for our customers and a stable employer for our employees”

new products,” says Philipp Blum, who expects growth in the medium term.

To generate this growth, Blum has invested a total of 287 million euros in the 2023/2024 financial year. One important step taken by Blum in the last financial year was the acquisition of Belgian company Van Hoecke – a long-standing partner and sales agency for Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. What’s more, showrooms around the world were redesigned or opened for the first time, including those in Christchurch, Istanbul, Tunis, Melbourne, Johannesburg and Tokyo.

As always, a large portion of Blum’s investments, amounting to 182 million euros this year, have been placed in the main site in Vorarlberg. The expansion of

plant 6 in Gaissau has been completed and progress is being made on the expansion of the company’s plants in Bregenz and Hoechst.

The family company has also secured a long-term opportunity for growth in Eastern Austria. The first Austrian Blum plant outside of Vorarlberg will be constructed in St. Poelten.

“We are optimistic that the economy will pick up towards the end of 2024 and demand for our fittings will increase again,” says Philipp Blum.

“Regardless of the economic developments, we will put all our energy, ingenuity and innovative strength into remaining a future-proof partner for our customers and a stable employer for our employees,” adds Martin Blum. www.blum.com

Time for more trees please

A House of Commons Committee report, published in 2023, stated that woodland cover would need to be significantly expanded in the UK in order to address predicted shortfalls in the supply of domesticallyproduced softwood timber, and that the UK Government had committed to planting 30,000 hectares of new woodland by 2024-25.

With current Government planting targets not being

met, the wood panel industry, aligned with the forestry sector and other key stakeholders, continues to advocate the necessary investment in the UK to create a more selfsufficient productive timber supply. This critical investment will support jobs and help to ensure sustainable, lower carbon construction, and protect long term material supply to key commercial, construction and furniture industries in the UK.

EGGER supports forest regeneration through multi-species tree planting, improving the biodiversity of forests and enhancing wildlife and water quality. Mixed forests are more resilient to pests, diseases, and climatic disturbances, contributing to long-term carbon storage potential and supporting higher levels of biodiversity. As part of its sustainable operations, EGGER has a buying strategy that focuses on sourcing 90%

of its wood supply from within 100 miles of its plants.

EGGER is committed to promoting sustainable forestry. The wood used in production comes from 100% verified legal and controlled sources according to ISO 38200. Furthermore, internationally acknowledged third-party Chain of Custody certification programs guarantee EGGER’s adherence to environmental and social standards. www.egger.com

See Limited’s distribution arm achieves automated excellence with HOMAG

See Limited provide a significant investment to their distribution arm, Performance Panels, through the integration of HOMAG’s STORETEQ P-500 storage system and SAWTEQ S-300 panel dividing saw, which will enhance operational efficiency and capacity on-site.

The investment from the company’s holding company, See Limited, will not only revolutionise the day-to-day working operations at the distribution facility in Halifax, but also drastically improve its environmental footprint. Prior to the installation, the company did the majority of its work manually, moving high performance decorative panels by forklifts and picking sheets from pallet stacks.

HOMAG’s STORETEQ P-500 automated storage system will now organise, stock, and select different sheet sizes and materials in its facility, in what is a huge

boost to the facility’s operational capacity.

See Limited has sustainability at the heart of its ethos, so improving the environmental efficiency at the Halifax site was paramount. The distributor, Performance Panels will be saving 280 bottles of LPG (liquid petroleum gas) on forklift use alone, equating to an estimated 17,495 kgCO2e avoided per year, based on calculations from the UK Government’s website.

Company background

Established in 1994, Performance Panels specialises in distributing decorative surface materials from leading brands such as Trespa and BioCarbon Laminates, catering to niche markets requiring highperformance materials for fabrication. Competitive rates, fast turnarounds, and excellent customer service are staples of this Halifax-based business.

“The STORETEQ P-500 and SAWTEQ S-300 have not only automated and streamlined processes but also enabled the continued growth of the company”

The need for change

Prior to the purchase of HOMAG machinery, Performance Panel’s operation had, quite impressively, established its market presence in a mostly manual capacity. As the company continued to grow, however, the operational side needed a full evaluation to meet environmental and sustainable ambitions as well as demand, and therefore the need for automation became unignorable. In addition to automation, the company required a system capable of managing diverse panel types and sizes while also improving overall efficiency. After consulting with HOMAG’s woodworking and storage specialists, and subsequently travelling to Germany to see various systems in action, Performance Panels found a solution that perfectly aligned with their needs.

HOMAG’s STORETEQ P-500 and SAWTEQ S-300

Performance Panels chose the STORETEQ P-500 for its high-efficiency logistics capabilities. This system can

handle a variety of materials, including plastic, plexiglass, and laminates, making it highly versatile. It is equipped with woodStore software, which offers precise material management and automated offcut handling, ensuring optimal use of resources and streamlined operations.

Complementing the STORETEQ P-500, the SAWTEQ S-300 is a high-performance beam saw that excels in producing batch size 1 as well as smaller series production, making it extremely versatile. This saw features advanced operator assistance systems and quality control mechanisms, which guarantee high-quality output and ease of use for the operators.

Benefits realised

The implementation of the STORETEQ P-500 and SAWTEQ S-300 systems has

significantly transformed Performance Panels’ working operations, but has also enhanced the health and safety measures onsite. Automated processes have replaced much of the manual handling, drastically reducing the time spent locating and retrieving stock.

“Impressively, we now have the added flexibility to run the STORETEQ P-500 overnight, which means we can pick and choose when we schedule the requirement for ‘Electricity Demand’ which further supports our sustainable credentials and with the added benefit of lower rates during off-peak hours,” says Brett Baldwyn, Managing Director at Performance Panels.

Lastly, operational transparency has been greatly enhanced with the woodStore software, which provides

complete visibility over stock locations and movements. The team can easily track and manage material and flag any quality issues that arise.

Training and Support

Training was a critical component of the implementation. Five employees including members from the company’s fabrication arm, Bousfields, were sent to Germany for intensive training sessions, complemented by hands-on training at the Halifax site during the handover.

The impact

Performance Panels’ collaboration with HOMAG has set a new benchmark for operational efficiency and product quality.

The STORETEQ P-500 and SAWTEQ S-300 have not only automated and streamlined processes but also enabled the continued growth of the company.

“HOMAG are very good at what they do,” Brett concludes. “From the planning to the installation to the aftercare – you know you’re in safe hands. The machines themselves, of course, are second to none. We’re going to reap the benefits for many years to come.”

McEvoy & Rowley brings kitchen manufacturing in-house with HOMAG machinery

McEvoy & Rowley, a family-run business with over 50 years of history, has long been a staple in the Maidenhead community, offering top-tier kitchen designs and appliances. Originally, they relied on suppliers from Scotland and Germany to provide their kitchen products. However, the disruptions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic exposed critical vulnerabilities in their supply chain, leading to issues with quality, lead times, and overall customer satisfaction.

Faced with these challenges, McEvoy & Rowley made the strategic decision to take control of their manufacturing process by bringing it in-house. To achieve this pivotal move, they turned to HOMAG, who stood ready with a bespoke solution consisting of no less than nine machines.

Choosing HOMAG

The transition from purchasing kitchens to manufacturing them required careful planning and investment in the right machinery. McEvoy & Rowley needed a solution that would allow them to produce high-quality kitchen units quickly and accurately, without the common issues they had experienced with

supplier-made products, such as units arriving out of square.

Jake Howard, the Factory Manager at McEvoy & Rowley, recalls the company’s initial approach: “We were new to manufacturing, so we spoke with several of the big manufacturing giants to explore our options. As you’d expect, HOMAG were on that list – and after our meeting with Ian Woodall, their Sales Manager, we were more or less convinced that they were the best choice for us.

“What set HOMAG apart was their willingness to listen to our specific needs and provide tailored advice. They didn’t just give a big sales pitch – they genuinely wanted to ensure we had the right equipment for our operations.”

To the nines

After detailed consultations, HOMAG recommended a suite of machines that perfectly aligned with McEvoy & Rowley’s goals. Rather than pushing for CNC machines, which are commonly used but might not meet the speed and precision requirements for their specific needs, HOMAG guided them towards beam saws and edgebanders.

“A lot of manufacturers seem to go down the CNC route. But we’ve found

that, a lot of the time, you can attribute faults in products back to the CNC machine being used. We also wanted machines that could work faster. So, Ian introduced us to HOMAG’s beam saws, which promised perfect cuts 99.9% of the time – and at speed. This would solve a lot of the issues we had when we were buying kitchens from suppliers.”

The SAWTEQ S-300 panel saw was therefore selected, but this was just one piece of the puzzle. Also purchased were two EDGETEQ S-300 edge banders, a LOOPTEQ O-300 return conveyor, a Makor Start One spray machine, two DRILLTEQ models (V-200 and V-500) for drilling and doweling, an XES Glue Service Station, and a CABTEQ T-200 case clamp.

“The advice given by HOMAG was absolutely spot on. It was the first time our company had gone into any kind of manufacturing, so it was great to have their expertise at hand, and we couldn’t be happier with how all nine machines are performing.”

Implementation

The implementation process was smooth and well-coordinated, beginning with a thorough site survey conducted by HOMAG. “They were very clear on who

“We now have full control over the product we sell, and when you’re working with such accurate and reliable machinery, that’s a great position to be in”
“We’ve enjoyed showing customers around our factory to see the HOMAG machinery in action. It’s made a huge difference to how our guys can sell our kitchens – and it’s improved the customer experience as a whole”

was going to arrive and when,” Jake noted. “The entire installation was very professional, and HOMAG had a great presence on-site, which really put us at ease.”

Training was another critical aspect of the transition. HOMAG provided comprehensive training sessions for McEvoy & Rowley’s team, ensuring they were fully equipped to operate the new machinery. This training allowed the company to gradually shift their production in-house, significantly reducing their reliance on external suppliers.

Benefits realised

Since bringing the manufacturing process in-house, McEvoy & Rowley have seen numerous benefits.

“Cost savings is the obvious one. We were spending crazy money on kitchens from external suppliers. Moving everything in-house will save us a fortune in the long run.

“Equally, if not more beneficial is the quality assurance we’ve gained. We now have full control over the product we sell, and when you’re working with such accurate and reliable machinery, that’s

a great position to be in. It also means we can make tweaks to products as and when needed, which customers always appreciate.”

Additionally, McEvoy & Rowley now have the ability to invite customers to view their kitchens being made, providing transparency and boosting confidence in their products. “We’ve enjoyed showing customers around our factory to see the HOMAG machinery in action. It’s made a huge difference to how our guys can sell our kitchens – and it’s improved the customer experience as a whole.”

Final thoughts

One of the standout aspects of working with HOMAG, according to Jake, was their honest and consultative approach. “They even challenge us on things to make sure it’s the right decision. We’ve always appreciated that they won’t just let you spend your money on something you don’t actually need.”

He concludes, “Bringing our manufacturing in-house was a huge decision – daunting, to say the least. HOMAG not only made it possible, but they also made it as seamless as can be. From start to finish the service was excellent, and we’re glad to consider them a partner as our business continues moving forward.”

Tool manufacturing around the clock with Vollmer Automation

Based in Lower Bavaria, Huber GmbH CNC-Präzisions-Werkzeugschleiferei has for 30 years been a medium-sized company repairing and manufacturing precision tools for the machining industry. The Eggenfelden company also develops and produces high-quality special tools, circular saws and band saws. The VOLLMER Group’s sharpening machines have been part of the Huber machine park from the very beginning, and last year they completed their ensemble with a VGrind 360S grinding machine. Huber is using the VOLLMER machine and its 24/7 automation capability to boost the production of semi-standardised milling tools for the machining industry.

Huber GmbH has made a name for itself in the industry by manufacturing high-quality, durable and cost-effective standard and special tools, resharpening circular and band saws, as well as knives, and reliably supporting customers with its services.

Its range of carbide tools includes high-performance milling cutters such as end mills, radius and ball end mills, torus cutters, special milling cutters and mould tools. It also offers personalised advice and services, such as a coating service which ensures significant improvements in carbide tools’ operating life and performance.

“When it comes to sharpening machines, we have relied on the technological expertise of the VOLLMER Group since our company was founded,” says Andreas Fröhlich. “We currently have five VOLLMER machines in use – our most recent purchase was a VGrind 360S last year.

“Huber is a prime example of how we have been working with our customers in a spirit of trust and partnership for decades”

Fulfilling order volumes with the new VOLLMER machine

Huber uses the VOLLMER CHD 270 machine and the Solution K850-T and KBN710 sharpening machines from Loroch – a company of the VOLLMER Group to machine carbide-tipped and high-speed steel circular saws.

Thanks to automation solutions, the machines typically run around the clock, grinding carbide-tipped circular saws with diameters of up to 840mm.

To meet the increasing demand for high-performance carbide milling cutters, Huber purchased a new VOLLMER VGrind 360S tool grinding machine in 2023. This investment has enabled Huber to expand the production of standardised cutting tools. Equipped with the VOLLMER HC4 chain magazine, up to 158 shank tools with different sizes and geometries can be automatically produced and machined.

VGrind 360S: quick and precise

Alongside automation, the decisive factor for Huber was that the VGrind 360S is suitable for ensuring consistently highquality machining thanks to the wear-free linear induction motors on the X, Y and Z axes, and also reduces maintenance costs. With two grinding spindles situated one above the other and the grinding wheel

set positioned at the C-axis pivot point, the VGrind 360 tool grinding machine enables efficient multi-level machining. This means that machining times can be reduced thanks to the shorter travel distances of the linear axes, which is also beneficial in terms of the speed promised by Huber. Spindles and motors are cooled by a plate heat exchanger. This increases thermal stability to improve both the precision and performance of the grinding process. Huber can minimise axial and radial run-out errors in the grinding wheel packages thanks to the integrated spindle indexing of the VGrind 360S. This means that the grinding machine is equipped with an orientated spindle stop, which always stops the end of the spindle at exactly the same position for changing the grinding wheel.

“Huber is a prime example of how we have been working with our customers in a spirit of trust and partnership for decades, and how we can provide ideal technological support for the growth of medium-sized tool manufacturers every step of the way,” says Yannick Geisinger, Area Sales Manager Germany South and Switzerland at the VOLLMER Group. 0115 9491040

“Best

return

on investment from any piece of equipment the company has ever purchased”

A UK furniture manufacturer has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on heating and waste disposal costs.

SylvanWorks specialises in bespoke furniture and joinery. When the company moved into its current 16000 sq. ft modern industrial unit, there was no heating in the premises. That’s when company director, Gareth Langdon realised that an investment in a wood waste heater would provide free heating whilst also reducing waste disposal costs. Gareth liked the idea of being able to recycle the wood offcuts into energy, rather than disposing of them into skips to go to landfill. There was also the added benefit that the wood waste burner would provide free heating to the workshop, so the business could stop using gas heaters in the cold months, which were expensive to run. After speaking with Kurt Cockroft at Wood Waste Technology, Gareth

ordered a WT15 heater that was installed by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers.

“I’m delighted with the wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology,” says Gareth. “It provides precisely the benefits advertised and works so well. Whoever arrives at work first in the morning gets the fire going, and then the workspace heats up really quickly. I would recommend any company producing wood waste to consider investing in one. Expert dust extraction from Fercell

Looking to expand manufacturing capabilities, alongside relocation to new premises, a bespoke kitchen and furniture manufacturer, based in North Oxfordshire, contacted Fercell to explore their options for an effective LEV solution.

From Fercell’s initial consultation and site survey, it was clear that the system would need to provide effective capture for dust and particulate from multiple wood machine tools, at any one time.

Fercell presented a proposal, which, following sign-off, led to the installation of a new local exhaust ventilation system.

Extracting the dust …

The solution consisted of a centralised ducting system, serviced by a UF6, multibreather, filter unit and high-efficiency MVS-HR15 centrifugal fan.

To optimise production space, the filter and fan were situated outside. With the filter unit manufactured from galvanised steel, it is designed to withstand the harshest of weather conditions.

With ~1.5m³ collection capacity, across six waste collection sacks, the UF6 is especially suited for high dust loading applications, as was the case here. With numerous machine tools in concurrent operation, the production department can be confident of extended

“Fercell designs, supplies, installs and services local exhaust ventilation systems, including dust, fume and spray extraction equipment, and has been doing so successfully for nearly five decades”

periods of operation before the quickchange collection sacks have to be exchanged.

Equipped with heavy-duty ‘SupaPoly’, dust-release, filters elements, the system has improved air handling and extended filter service life, when compared to either cotton or standard polyester media. The filtration efficiency, enables the clean, filtered air to be returned to the production area, to balance the building pressure and minimise heat-loss, during the cooler months, through an air makeup system.

Post completion of the installation,

a thorough examination and test of the system was carried out by a BOHS P-series qualified technician, to ensure compliance with the COSHH regulations and HSE guidance HSG258.

A Labour of Love? (Or is it timber?)

The new Labour Government has committed to a large house building drive, but with the drive to net zero, is this achievable? Chris Franklin, MD at Ranheat Engineering Ltd – a leading UK manufacturer of wood combustion equipment – continues his series of articles exclusively for Furniture and Joinery Production.

The answer demands quite radical changes to the way we build houses, insulate, and heat them. All of these requirements should be good news for the UK woodworking industry.

A traditional house, constructed of traditional methods cannot get to net zero as too much carbon is used in the manufacture of traditional building materials. Also, a traditional brick and block house takes around eight months to build.

There is also a lack of skilled tradesmen – it was recently reported that the average age of a bricklayer is around 52 years

“The answer demands quite radical changes to the way we build houses, insulate, and heat them”

old and getting older. Following BREXIT, many skilled workers returned to their home countries, creating further skills shortages.

The new Government has committed to build 1.5 million homes over the next 5 years. The answer looks like timber framed houses. These can be made in factories off-site and then assembled quickly. Some house builders are claiming a house can be put up in five days using this method.

Within our industry we have seen the increase in engineered timber, with floor joists being replaced with timber “I” beams using softwood and OSB. They are lighter, stronger and straighter than conventional timber joists.

Using these techniques, whole floors can be pre-made along with walls and stairwells, as well as staircases. Add in timber windows and doors with triple glazing, with the windows made from engineered timber, and the whole thing looks feasible.

The last Government was pushing for the use of heat pumps, the problem being that the water temperature was too low for conventional radiators. There are new ranges of heat pumps being developed

that run at higher temperatures.

With timber-framed housing and prebuilt floors, underfloor heating can be installed as part of the build. The heating panels can be pre-installed in the floors during construction of the floors in the factory.

So, the answer is underfloor heating in a well-insulated building, made of timber, heated by a heat-pump, with the electricity coming from solar PV panels built into the roofing, charging a battery storage system with any off-site electricity coming from wind or solar generation.

The final part of this is that the factories making this new generation of housing must themselves be heated using the wood-waste from the construction of this new generation of house building methods.

These factories should ideally have solar PV on the roof generating their own electricity to power the machines and the dust extraction systems needed. Contact Ranheat for more information on its range of industrial Biomass equipment.

Extractly Ltd attains ISO Certification

Following the announcement this time last year that Extractly Limited had achieved ‘SafeContractor’ status, the company has now attained further recognition of the quality of its business processes that comes with the achievement of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 Certification.

ISO certifications undoubtedly add credibility to a business’s reputation and are widely regarded as an endorsement of a company’s commitment to high standards, as Extractly’s General Manager, Kieran Redmond, explained: “Following discussions with Citation ISO Certification Ltd, formerly QMS, we made the decision to go ahead and put our practices and processes to the test.

“The initial motivation for wanting to achieve ISO Certification was led by our desire to gain a competitive edge in the marketplace by maximising customer satisfaction, and we were confident that ensuring our work was always carried out to the highest quality standards, with meticulous attention to regulatory compliance, could go a long way towards achieving this goal.”

Operations Director, Graham Day, who has supported Kieran throughout the process, added: “Kieran had invested a lot of time and effort into securing SafeContractor accreditation for Extractly and, although we hadn’t necessarily been documenting everything to the levels

“As well as enhancing the service we can offer to our customers, the process of ISO 9001 certification has helped to foster a culture of continuous improvement throughout the business”

required for ISO 9001, it was clear that we had already been fulfilling the majority of the obligations and responsibilities demanded by Citation.”

In conclusion, Kieran Redmond commented: “As well as enhancing the service we can offer to our customers, the process of ISO 9001 certification has helped to foster a culture of continuous improvement throughout the business, and we are all particularly proud to have achieved ISO 14001 which demonstrates how committed we are to minimising the environmental impact of our business with, for example, a comprehensive programme of waste recycling, implementing low energy lighting and, as widely as possible, adopting the use of hybrid and electric vehicles.”

SAVE ENERGY REDUCE COSTS

In many manufacturing facilities, extraction fans operate continuously, at full power, throughout the working day.

Even when some machines are not in use, and often during factory breaks, the powerful, energy-consuming fans continue to run at full speed – wasting valuable energy... and money!

With ECOGATE, the extraction system responds in real-time to variations in machine use. When a production machine is switched on, the greenBOX Controller opens a motorised damper to provide extraction for that particular machine.

With ECOGATE technology installed, an extraction fan will consume the minimum power required to provide optimum extraction – reducing electricity bills by 68% on average.

REDOCOL Kantomelt Lightly Filled

With EVA hotmelt adhesives, carpenters/ cabinet makers can choose between filled, lightly filled and unfilled products. Filled versions contain resins and minerals, in addition to the pure adhesives. This makes filled EVA hotmelt adhesives particularly easy to process. Unfilled hotmelt, on the other hand, consists of pure EVA copolymer. The adhesive can be applied more thinly, and produce a thinner joint when the machine is optimally adjusted. The processing, however, is more demanding, and higher feed rates are recommended.

The EVA hotmelt REDOCOL Kantomelt lightly filled offers a good alternative. Compared to an unfilled hotmelt adhesive, the all-rounder is much easier to process and therefore particularly suitable for older and slow-running machines. There is no unwanted stringing or smearing of the adhesive.

The hotmelt adhesive is further characterised by low consumption and a thinner glue joint as well as good heat and cold resistance. The bondline comes close to the quality of unfilled products.

The hotmelt adhesive is available in natural and white. For light board colours and decors, the Ostermann experts recommend white. Darker colours and decors are best processed with naturalcoloured adhesive.

REDOCOL Kantomelt PUR LM with reduced isocyanate content

When processing edgings, hotmelt adhesives based on polyurethane (PUR) ensure a particularly good, durable and water- and heat-resistant bond. Since the requirements for occupational safety and environmental protection are increasing in the area of PUR adhesives, Ostermann has included a PUR hotmelt adhesive with a reduced monomeric isocyanate content in its range.

The new REDOCOL Kantomelt PUR LM is the first non-labelled PUR product of the REDOCOL brand. It is available as a 2kg block and in two colours (natural and white).

MEDITE SMARTPLY is a market-leading manufacturer of sustainable timber construction panels. Here, Head of Business Development, Roly Ward, fills us in on the company’s offering, and in particular its impressive range of moisture-resistant MDF panels ...

Could you please give an overview of MEDITE SMARTPLY’s offering?

MEDITE SMARTPLY is part of Coillte, an innovative, FSC certified Irish forestry and forest products company. Based in Clonmel and Waterford, Ireland, MEDITE SMARTPLY produces a versatile range of Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) and Oriented Strand Board (OSB) building products.

The company’s commitment to sustainability is central to its operations, ensuring that products are as environmentally conscious in their creation as they are in their application.

Both MEDITE SMARTPLY’s offerings are made from sustainable wood products. OSB is produced from FSC certified pine and spruce, while MDF consists of 40% wood chip and 60% by-product.

These products are among the most environmentally efficient building materials available, supported by a product-specific Type 3 Environmental Product Declaration, offering specifiers peace of mind.

Carbon captured in the panels during the growth of trees in sustainably managed forests remains locked in for the product’s

lifespan and the buildings in which they are used. All panels are fully certified, UKCA and CE marked, legally sourced, and sustainable. Using timber in construction is essential for creating a low impact built environment, as it typically has lower embodied carbon than synthetically produced materials.

Upgrade your production process with AE Sewing Machines

For upholstery manufacturers, investing in new equipment is not just an option –it’s a necessity.

Henry Ford famously said, “If you need a machine and don’t buy it, you will ultimately find that you have paid for it and don’t have it.” This timeless insight is particularly true for upholstery manufacturing. Upgraded equipment streamlines production processes, reduces labour requirements, and allows you to take on more orders without compromising on quality.

The initial investment may be daunting, but the long-term value and cost savings are substantial. Faster, easier production at higher standards benefits both workers and the business. For example, customers swapping outdated upholstery trestle tables for Rexel ST-3 pneumatic lifting tables have been shown to increase productivity by at least 14%.

“AE Sewing Machines has worked with companies ranging from boutique start-ups to furniture giants like DFS, with its advanced equipment and unrivalled technical support setting it apart”

Older equipment often becomes unreliable, requiring frequent, costly repairs and resulting in wastage. Over time, the loss of potential output and upkeep cost of persevering with old equipment far outweigh the cost of upgrading.

Elli Design transforms production process with Caracol’s 3D printing solution

Furniture has always been considered a durable good, but even this sector has been facing hyper-consumerism and the standardisation of lines and proposals. With this context in mind, Italian start-up, Elli Design, has built a solid collaboration with Caracol, leveraging its 3D printing robotic technology’s capability.

Thanks to the skillset of Caracol’s team, Elli has reshaped the development and production of its design lines with a valuable degree of sustainability and customisation, working on interior projects for public, commercial and hospitality spaces.

Elli was founded by CEO Alessio Elli and COO Alessio Frigeri in 2021. They had three main drivers in mind: sustainability and circular economy; innovation and technology; and social responsibility. Their goal was to bring these pillars to life as tangible objects that could translate into a new Italian design aesthetic, as well as adopt a new approach to manufacturing, focusing a lot on customisation and modularity of their furniture elements.

“We make furniture that meet the principles of eco-design: use of recycled and recyclable materials at the end of their life; design for circularity which wants multifunctional, adaptable, reusable,

repairable products; planning of second hand, Extra-Life and Made&Remade practices,” – says CEO, Alessio Elli.

“Our manufacturing processes counteract value destruction, having in mind the entire life cycle of the product. For this reason, we have chosen Caracol’s robotic platform Heron AM to produce our products, and we have asked the support of their team to truly leverage the opportunities and potential of innovation and additive manufacturing, while guaranteeing equal quality and creativity that distinguishes Made in Italy design.”

The company’s ambition and portfolio has been validated by the numerous

awards and recognitions it has achieved, starting from 2023, when the Italy-USA Foundation nominated Elli Designed as the best Italian innovative startup with the America Award – Innovation. In the same year, ZERO Furniture System won the Archiproducts Design Award for Sustainability, and DOUBLE Armchair was acknowledged as the Best product of the show and Sustainability at the BDNY in New York.

The fruitful collaboration with Caracol, to bring innovation within the manufacturing of these design series, started even earlier than that – from the inception of Elli as a startup. Besides the DOUBLE Armchair and ZERO system, Caracol supported Elli with the concept development and 3D printing of SOHO Dining Table and Chair, as well as BRYANT Coffee Table. In both cases, the use of LFAM technology unlocked new ways of making furniture that enhanced design freedom and production optimisation. The circular shapes of both tables, together with their peculiar surfaces’ patterns, wouldn’t be possible or would require multisteps production processes in case of traditional manufacturing techniques such as injection molding and rotomoulding. Moreover, the optimisation of the design facilitated the assembly of each table’s base with its top, thanks to custom hooks directly integrated within the base.

DOUBLE

DOUBLE is an indoor armchair previewed at BDNY2023 in New York and winner of the Best Product of the Show and Sustainability awards. The design concept centres on balancing aesthetics, form, and function, with a strong emphasis on minimising environmental impact during production, using biodegradable materials, and promoting recovery, reuse, and remanufacturing at the end of the product’s life.

Characterised by soft, flowing lines and elegant curves, this furniture piece is designed for public spaces, lobbies and hotel rooms, with a view to sharing and conviviality. To improve the ergonomics without compromising its edgy shapes, the 3D modelling has been key. At the same time, the real need of extreme customisation translated into a unique design that wouldn’t be possible with traditional manufacturing techniques.

“LFAM technology unlocked new ways of making furniture that enhanced design freedom and production optimisation”

ZERO

ZERO is the Winner of the Archiproducts Design Award for Sustainability 2023. It embodies the concept “simplification is the greatest sophistication” and stresses the intrinsic peculiarities of a furniture product such as durability, reuse, and repair.

Compared to products with similar form and function, ZERO system is made of only two materials, assembled without the use of glues. The structural bodies of each element have been designed and 3D printed with functional hooks for smooth and durable assembly.

The use of Caracol’s large format additive manufacturing technology, Heron AM, enabled Elli Design’s production to generate net zero waste, with the broader possibility of reuse of material of nonconforming products. The improved lightness positively impacted on the logistics and production spaces, together with the modularity of these elements that can be printed directly from the 3D design, following custom sizes and requirements. Finally, designing and engineering for additive manufacturing, and 3D printing with Heron AM platform led to drastically reducing the construction complexity, eliminating pre- and post-production processing steps.

Hoffmann Machine Company’s hero product

Hoffmann Machine Company was founded in 1990 by Dr Walter Hoffmann and his two sons, Thomas and Martin. Initially, they designed and built machines in their father’s garage, each sale allowing them to buy more parts and build the next machine. As demand grew, they moved to some sheds in their grandma’s garden and eventually on to where we find the company today, with its Head Office in Bruchsal, Germany. Many of the original staff are still with the company.

Today, Hoffmann Machine Company designs and manufactures routing machines (MU range), double mitre saws (MS range), specialist tooling and custommade machinery. These machines are built on-site in Bruchsal and delivered all around the world, in close co-operation with the customer to ensure quality and performance.

Modern technology and new manufacturing methods have raised the expectations of users of woodworking machinery. In a competitive market. This is why Hoffmann uses only the very best and state-of-the art components.

“Our machines are built to the highest standards, utilising leading edge technology that is driven by the needs of our customers. Customer satisfaction is our primary concern. We seek to provide the best in quality, delivery and after sale service,” says Thomas Hoffmann, MD.

A proven mechanical feature

Shortly after founding the company, and after several years of development work by Thomas and Martin whilst working abroad in the U.S., an event took place with far-reaching implications – the idea that resulted in the “Hoffmann-Schwalbe” (Hoffmann Key). Designs and tests were carried out on numerous, sometimes even extreme applications. The result is a molded four-dimensional key in a double dovetail shape with obliquely converging ribbed inner surfaces, which is able to draw together two work-pieces in a stable and permanent joint. The Hoffmann Key changed the business activities of Hoffmann forever.

“The joining of work-pieces and components of all kinds, by our customers, has become a core part of the company. For this we offer a wide range of Hoffmann Keys and other related jointing systems with extensive processing techniques for both large- and small-scale operations. To an expert, the advantages of this unique joining system are obvious. Uncomplicated, durable, efficient and economical,” explains Thomas Hoffmann.

The hero product

Now on the MU 3 version, Dovetail keyways are routed into all mating parts and the frames are assembled by applying some glue and inserting Hoffmann Dovetail Keys. These Keys draw the parts together to form a tight, secure and permanent joint. No large clamping tables or bar clamps are required, and the frames can be finished immediately upon assembly.

All dovetail routing machines can process regular mitre joints and butt joints. This thoroughly revised machine has been reworked, updated and adapted to suit the current and future needs of the industry, with many new additional features. Ergonomic, user-friendly as well as up to date, the new MU-3 is available in four versions.

“Our machines are built to the highest standards, utilising leading edge technology that is driven by the needs of our customers”

• MU-3 entry level version for the quick and precise routing of dovetail slots.

• MU-3 D Digital version, with electronic two-axis display for the adjustable routing depth, as well as the positioning of the centre fence for the routed slot location. It is ideal for high precision work.

• MU-3 P Pneumatic version for series production and high throughput. Pneumatic workpiece clamping and controlled router feed. The MU-3 P is operated by foot-pedal control.

• MU-3 PD Pneumatic/ Digital version – the top machine with the highest operating comfort for a wide range of requirements. Functional features are similar to MU-3 P with a digital twoaxis display for the adjustable routing depth as well as the positioning of the centre fence for the routed slot location.

Blum SPACE TOWER – out-of-this-world storage convenience

Space and storage loom large on most consumer wish lists, hence the ‘all you need is space’ campaign by Hill’s Panel Products (HPP) and its trading partner, Blum.

Each month, the two renowned companies are highlighting products that improve on workspace and workflow, space and storage, and convenience – a brilliant example of which is the Blum SPACE TOWER.

The SPACE TOWER larder unit is everything you would expect from Blum. The ultimate in practical convenience, the SPACE TOWER provides:

• Pull-outs that can be opened individually, giving the user clear visibility and direct access to the contents, which are accessible from three sides – left, right and front.

• Storage using the full depth of the housing cabinet, enabling full extension of each shelf.

“The clever cabinet solution makes full use of the space available so that provisions are kept together and clearly organised”

Ample storage space

The primary objective of SPACE TOWER is to provide ample storage space. The clever cabinet solution makes full use of the space available so that provisions are kept together and clearly organised.

High, closed drawer boxes ensure that provisions are stored securely, meaning that nothing can fall out from the side or the back.

Inner dividing systems mean wellorganised storage space, allowing the user to keep everything nice and tidy. They also securely hold provisions so that flour, sugar and rice won’t tip over, for example.

Each pull-out boasts high stability and impressive load-bearing capacity (up to a total weight of 70 kg per drawer with a maximum total capacity of up to 350 kg).

Narrow or wide – the ultimate in convenience

SPACE TOWER is available in various heights, widths (ranging from 300mm to 1200mm), and depths, offering a great opportunity for customisation.

The smaller unit, for example, is ideal for a kitchen with limited space, while larger variations can hold enough for even the largest family.

Great design scope

Just because SPACE TOWER is termed a

larder unit, don’t think of it as only being good for kitchen projects.

It is also ideal for bedrooms, hallways and bathrooms with all its built-in storage and convenience just as handy for clothes and/or toiletries.

And SPACE TOWER is compatible with Blum’s LEGRABOX and TANDEMBOX drawer systems and the MOVENTO and TANDEM runner systems.

HPP – official Blum partner

HPP, which has its manufacturing and supply headquarters in Oldham, Lancashire, and a trade counter in Sheffield, Yorkshire, has been trading with Blum throughout its 33-year history.

Q&A: Neil Newbrook, Mirka’s Business Sector Manager for Wood, UK

We spoke to Mirka’s Neil Newbrook, Business Sector Manager for Wood, UK, about the unique attributes and benefits of Ultimax® Ligno ...

What makes Ultimax® Ligno especially good for wood sanding applications?

Every part of Ultimax® Ligno has been developed with wood applications in mind. However, I would say that one of the most important features of the new Ultimax® Ligno Disc is dust extraction. The disc has been designed to pull the wood fibres across the disc’s surface as easily as possible and prevent the disc from getting too hot.

The biggest downside to sanding wood is that as you build the heat up, you can melt the resin that comes out of the wood and that’s what clogs discs. With Ultimax® Ligno, the white channels don’t have any grain on them at all. So, the dust can move very quickly and smoothly along these channels towards the extraction holes, as the dust is moving so easily across the surface of the disc.

What are the benefits customers see from using Ultimax® Ligno?

All in all, Ultimax® Ligno is the result of years of research at Mirka. The key benefit to the user is an unrivalled surface finish on wood substrate, making the wood look more alive and leaving the perfect surface for subsequent coatings. In addition,

Ligno has strong resistance to edgewear, minimal grain loss and remains free from clogging throughout use.

What is the difference between Ultimax® Ligno and Abranet®?

Good question! Ultimax® Ligno is not a replacement for Abranet®, I can see why you would compare the two products. In some ways they are similar, but their building blocks are different in every way. Ligno is a paper-backed abrasive with excellent airflow, which is very important for keeping the substrate cool; Abranet® achieves this cooling effect with the holes in the net. The grains are different – Abranet® is Aluminium Oxide, Abranet® Ace is ceramic, Ligno is a mix of both. Each product has a different resin system and manufacturing process.

What is the make-up of Ultimax® Ligno?

We developed our own latex-impregnated paper for this product to achieve flexibility, good edgewear and flatness in combination with our new maker technology-C-paper. We use a ceramic and aluminium oxide grain blend which is perfect for cutting hardwoods or softwoods without clogging.

“Through extensive testing, the R&D team discovered the ‘hourglass’ shape’s optimal cutting performance for wood sector substrates”

The pattern on Ultimax® Ligno is very unique, how did Mirka come up with this? Interestingly, Mirka tested 64 patterns before deciding on the distinctive hourglass shape. It’s not just the right shape, but the right size to cut effectively while allowing airflow over the disc. That’s only possible thanks to Mirka’s grain printing technology. Through extensive testing, the R&D team discovered the ‘hourglass’ shape’s optimal cutting performance for wood sector substrates as it allows the disc to cut at every single part of the surface, ensuring exceptional sanding results.

The holes on Ultimax® Ligno don’t align with the extraction holes on the backing pad, why is this?

Ultimax® Ligno features a strategically chosen Multifit hole pattern, eliminating the need for precise alignment. It is always correctly fitted without needing to align the abrasive to match the dust extraction holes specifically. This pattern effectively directs dust towards the holes located on the backing pad; you will notice that no dust gets passed the outer perimeter.

Is Ultimax® Ligno a sustainable product? The production method reduces energy consumption, as the process for curing the glue is more efficient. Ultimax® Ligno also has superior adhesion with VOC-free resin, ensuring a safer and healthier choice for both users and the environment. www.mirka.co.uk

The MARTIN Xplane cutterhead provides premium surface quality

The MARTIN Xplane cutterhead with three rows of knives impresses with a remarkably smooth operation even when idling. This impression is again underlined with the cutterhead in action – it works at a very low noise level. Even the largest chip removals require surprisingly low motor power – another advantage. What is really fascinating, however, is the surface quality that can be achieved with the Xplane, even on difficult types of wood.

MARTIN has been offering planing cutterblocks with individual, spirally arranged knives since 2011. What was initially viewed rather sceptically has become a serious alternative to the established systems in recent years. Intensive development work and extensive trials have finally led to a perfect result: the three-row Xplane shaft from MARTIN. It is generally recognised that far better surface results can be achieved with a so-called shear cut than with straight, nonangled blades. The Xplane achieves highly impressive results, particularly in knotty areas, such as around branches, but also with woods that are difficult to plane, such as robinia. The ideal design of the three rows of knives minimises or even eliminates tears. This reduces expensive

reworking, which is usually required for every planed surface.

In addition to the optimum arrangement of the knives and the correctly selected number of rows, the shape of the knives themselves is also an important point. With the XS knife, MARTIN supplies a specially ground, arched knife. The result is smooth, barely perceptible transitions between the individual knife tracks, optimum chip removal, remarkably low cutting pressure and reduced chip size.

The XS knives made of carbide have a service life that is around 20 times longer

“The Xplane achieves highly impressive results, particularly in knotty areas, such as around branches, but also with woods that are difficult to plane, such as robinia”

than conventional planer knives. This saves costs and, incidentally, opens up completely new machining possibilities. Even MDF can be planed without any consequences. If the cutting edge is damaged, for example by metal inclusions or small stones, it is not necessary to replace the entire set of knives on the cutterhead. Simply turn two or three small, low-cost hard metal knives on the shaft, and you’re done. Each XS blade has four uses and therefore also makes a noticeable contribution to reducing costs. The spiral arrangement of the knives on a cutter block, which is in the nature of this arrangement, leads to a considerable reduction in the noise generated. The perceived noise pollution is reduced by up to 50% thanks to the Xplane shaft (compared to a traditional cutter block with four knives). This makes both working with the machine itself and working in its surroundings much more pleasant.

The three-row MARTIN Xplane shaft is a precision tool that achieves excellent planing results even on difficult materials thanks to its unique design. sales@martin.info www.martin.info

Quickfit TL5 Dowels combine versatility with performance

The innovative Quickfit TL5 “Full Metal Jacket” dowels from cabinet hardware expert TITUS, provide strong, reliable joints in all types of wooden materials, including MDF, chipboard and solid wood. This means that it is no longer necessary to use different dowels for different materials, or to reinforce joints by adding supplementary wooden dowels.

In addition, the new dowels – which are part of the TITUS “Engineered for Your Kitchen” programme – offer fast, tool-free insertion, reducing assembly time by up to 50% for home-assembled furniture. Alternatively, for maximum efficiency in volume produc-tion applications, they can be inserted automatically using TITUS FastFit machines.

Quickfit TL5 dowels, which are used in conjunction with TITUS Cam5000 cams, incorporate an expanding steel sleeve that provides high resistance to torsion and pull out. This ensures rigid furniture construction, with complete freedom from the tendency for joints to loosen over time. Furniture using the dowels can also be disassembled and reassembled repeatedly without compromising joint integrity.

The dowels are designed for insertion into a 5mm hole and, on insertion, they positively and reliably engage with the hole, greatly simplifying subsequent assembly steps. When edge inserted, the dowels immediately engage with the cam and remain securely positioned until the cam is tightened.

“The new dowels – which are part of the TITUS “Engineered for Your Kitchen” programme – offer fast, tool-free insertion, reducing assembly time by up to 50% for homeassembled furniture”

A further key feature is that the special design of the dowel head adopted for these innovative and time-saving products means that the performance of Quickfit TL5 dowels is unaffected by edge-to-holecentre (ETHC) tolerances of up to ± 1 mm. Therefore, they easily accommodate not only drilling inconsistencies, but also the natural movement of wooden panels. The dowels can be supplied in versions to suit ETHC dimensions of 24mm and 34mm. The required hole diameter for the face board is 5mm, and for the edge board 8mm. The minimum hole depth in the face board is 12.5mm.
