I always find that the turn of a year is a good time to revisit the tried and tested, to assess alternate options and look for a new way of doing things. Myself for instance, after the holiday indulgences, it is important to initiate a better diet of course, maybe try out some of the much-hyped Sirtfoods for a few weeks to see how that plays out... Regarding getting out and about more this year, my highlight will be W16 in October of course, where we will once again be exhibiting and entertaining. I have also made plans to attend two events over the next few months that this magazine has not yet covered: the Holz-Handwerk and Fensterbau Frontale shows in March in Nuremberg, and a new event called IDEA, taking place in Bergamo in April at the same time as the Milan Furniture Fair.

The Nuremberg event is cited by some in the industry as the most interesting and dynamic machinery event, bar none. Especially for window, door and joinery solutions. That is quite some statement and one which I will attempt to contextualise during and after my visit. The IDEA show is a little different to the typical trade event insofar as its organiser has set up a jury to preside over the exhibitors to ensure that innovation comes to the fore and is represented by every exhibitor in some way. Both machinery and components will be on show and there is also the promise of a very good conference programme – I might even stay over a couple of days for the football of Atalanta v Roma on Sunday as Bergamo is a truly special place to be.

In addition to researching a good quality publication and using the industry-leading website, there really is no better way to get to know an industry than by visiting the sector’s top trade events – be it at busy trade events as mentioned, or by visiting some of the numerous at-home events which, by their very nature, are more relaxed, perhaps more focussed and more personal. As always, we endeavour to highlight the industry’s best events on our website – so please email me if there’s something you will like to see us get involved with, report on or indeed to list an event of your own. Finally, I would also like to extend a warm welcome to the latest member of the FP team, Craig Bartlett, who joins Paul Field on the advertising team this month.

Test lab expands SATRA’s Chemical and Analytical Technology (CAT) laboratory has doubled in size to meet the growing demand for permeation testing. The independent research and testing organisation has refurbished part of the chemistry laboratory and invested in additional equipment to determine the permeation resistance of protective materials against harmful chemicals. SATRA regularly assesses gloving materials, safety footwear and protective clothing to European test methods in order for these products to be CE-marked. A wide range of challenge chemicals can be tested at SATRA’s facility including concentrated sulphuric acid (the acid found in car batteries), and dichloromethane (commonly used in paint strippers). This expansion will enable more testing to be carried out simultaneously, reducing the turnaround time for testing. W satra.co.uk

David comes from a background in golf, having previously worked for American Golf and has joined on a one year apprenticeship training scheme. In the latter six months of his training he will be based externally working alongside the sales team. “I’m absolutely thrilled to have joined such a fantastic company and team. The process so far has been a great experience and I’m really looking forward to my future with Blum.”
Stephen King, sales director, SCA Timber Mill Sales UK
SCA Timber Supply UK’s commercial director, Stephen King, will take up the position of sales director for SCA Timber Mill Sales UK. SCA Timber Mills produce over two million cubic metres of sawn timber annually in Northern Sweden and distribute product globally. Anders Ante Andersson, vice president marketing and sales at SCA Timber AB says: “The UK is a key strategic market for SCA Timber with product supply into builders’ merchants and the industrial end user market. Stephen is well known in the industry having worked for SCA for over 15 years and has good knowledge and contacts in the UK market – which is essential. He will lead our UK Mill Sales organisation into the future and we are happy to have him in our sales team again.”
TTF appoints David Hopkins new director The Timber Trade Federation (TTF) has announced the appointment of David Hopkins as new director. David is currently director at Wood for Good, the timber industry communications campaign. He will now take a position on the board of Wood for Good as he moves into his new role at TTF. Keith Fryer, president of the TTF says: “I am delighted that David has accepted the position of director. It was a tough recruitment battle with a number of top-class candidates. We need somebody with the vision, skills and knowledge to take the federation forward through a period of great change, and David is that man. “His time at Wood for Good has given him great insight into the challenges and opportunities across the whole supply chain. I am looking forward to working together for what will be a positive, exciting and eventful time ahead.” During his time at Wood for Good, David led the award-winning Wood First and Building with

Carbon campaigns, helped develop the timber industry lifecycle assessment database, and focused on putting timber’s low carbon properties at the front of the national agenda. He is a regular speaker at industry conferences and events, most recently promoting timber’s role in a low-carbon economy to policy makers at the European Parliament. David replaces outgoing chief executive David Lennan who stepped down from the post on December 31st. Keith adds: “I would like to thank David Lennan for his time, tenacity and inputs over the course of the past year. He has helped put the structure in place for a prosperous future for the TTF. Without his driving instinct and determination we would never have delivered the CTI for which we all owe a debt of gratitude. On behalf of everyone at the TTF I send him our very best wishes for the future.”

Glittering awards evening is fitting occasion for BA Components’ milestone year BA Components crowned its 25th year in business with a glittering celebration and wards evening in November, with over 300 staff, suppliers, customers, family and guests attending a black tie gala awards night at the Glenavon House Hotel in Cookstown. The statistics were impressive: 332 attendees, a six-piece band, 1000 plates of food, 11 awards and six block-booked hotels making it an unforgettable evening. BA Cookstown staff were joined by colleagues from the Doncaster factory, suppliers from as far away as Japan and customers from over 23 countries serviced by BA. The evening followed earlier guided tours of the Cookstown factory, led by business owners Brian and Kieran McCracken and was filled with some reminiscing on times past, inspiration for the future, and plenty of laughs in between. Steve Thornley from Thornleys, and winner of both the Best Kitchen Under £15k and Overall award said: “The factory tour this morning was brilliant. We were given a great insight into the company and the creation of the products we purchase. Being led through the factory by Brian and Kieran themselves was an honour; being able to absorb their knowledge and experience first-hand.” Following the afternoon’s busy tour schedule, comedian William Caulfield entertained (and sometimes shocked!) guests as he navigated through the black tie dinner and awards presentations with his witty humour, while BA Components’ sales and marketing director, David Caulfield, co-hosted to oversee every detail of the spectacular night.
Sponsors and winners made their way to stage to the accompaniment of live music from The Liberals throughout the evening and to round everything off, a humorous and entertaining tribute leading to a standing ovation was paid to the twin brothers who have taken the business forward for the past 25 years, Brian and Kieran McCracken. The awards winners were as follows: – Best Bathroom: Wittering West Ltd – Best Bedroom: Drawers N Doors – Best Dealer Use of Social Media: J Sheppard & Sons – Most Innovative Use of a BA Product: Glenlith Interiors (Scotland) Ltd – Best Makeover/Replacement Project: Upgrade Your Kitchen Ltd – Best Kitchen Under £15k: Thornleys – Best Kitchen Over £15k: David Head Furniture – Best Dealer Showroom: Carana Kitchens / Buy Buy Kitchens – Supplier of the Year: Hettich – Overall Award: Thornleys – BAmbassador: Troy Tappenden, Dream Doors Tim Leedham, managing director of Hettich UK said: “I cannot believe the level of detail BA have gone to for this event; well actually, I can. The quality of the night reflects their attitude to business – striving for the best they can possibly produce. We have had an incredible time tonight – BA has set the bar high. I can’t imagine I’ll ever be at an event of this quality again any time soon.” Brian and Kieran said: “Tonight has been incredible. We are blown away by the level of
detail David and his army of helpers have gone to in order to deliver this event. We can’t thank him and all who attended enough for the most memorable and glamorous night BA has had to date. (jokingly) We’re looking forward to seeing how the 50-year anniversary celebration will top it!” David Caulfield said: “This has truly been a night to remember. A night when customers, staff, suppliers, friends and family all came together for one great party and celebration. All the hard work, stress and sleepless nights have been worth while just to see the pleasure and enjoyment everyone experienced tonight.” If people were unable to attend on the night, or catch a glimpse of the live stream, fear not, the evening was also recorded and will soon be made available to watch. BA would also love to see guests’ photographs from the night, so send them in to kathrynmoore@bacomponents.co.uk, or share them on its social media! W bawards.co.uk

Introducing IDEA... an exhibition of new technology, machinery, components and materials for the furniture industry
Innovation and technology for the furniture industry at IDEA Koch Technology, IKEA, SCM Group, Igus. These are just some of the names that will be included in the first edition of the international exhibition held in Bergamo, but the ability to excel and innovate is not solely available for the big players. IDEA will also focus on small yet outstanding companies, enabling them to stand out like one of the bigger companies. According to the organiser, the experts are gaining interest in IDEA – Innovation Design Expo Area – which is being held from the 12-15th of April 2016 in Fiera di Bergamo concurrent with the world-renowned furniture fair and the Milan Design Week. With more than 300,000 visitors already in Milan and the surrounding region, the organisersw have timed the event perfectly giving professionals an opportunity to view and interact with the latest solutions related to woodworking machines and the world of furniture components. Attracted by this formula, important players in the furniture industry have given their support
to participate at the show, joining in various capacities – as an exhibitor, by taking part in the conference programme, or as a strategic partner – to ensure the project is structured well. The first edition, taking place this April, will incorporate and revolve around two words critical to the future of the industry: excellence and innovation. SCM Group will be present at IDEA 2016 – visitors will admire the best technological units of the renowned group leader, as well as at least one innovative solution that is a first of its kind – a requirement of IDEA. The organiser calls this its innovation rule: it requires participants to bring to IDEA at least one innovative technological solution. Exhibitors will only have the green light to display these innovative solutions after being reviewed by a committee, made up of leading figures from the worlds of industry, design and academics. The first companies to sign up as exhibitors, give immediate resonance and relevance to
the event. Among them are Koch Technology a renowned German Machinery company which for over 50 years has focused its industrial research in the design and manufacture of special machines for the production of furniture and its components, whose common feature is innovation and maximum reliability) IKEA, with a series of conferences discussing the strategies of those who will shape the future of furniture and Igus, leading manufacturer of polymer components for high quality furniture. The vision of IDEA is that innovation is an equal opportunity, from the smallest to the biggest. “There are small and medium companies,” says the creator of IDEA, Romano Ugolini, “that have a great capacity for innovation. The problem remains, however, communicating these features in a competitive manner. Our exhibition was created with this in mind, namely to signal to the market that there are new and dynamic ideas that have no reason to remain submerged”. The ideas, which this new event intends generate within the conferences being organised will provide significant emphasis to key issues such as Industry 4.0, robotics, digital printing, laser technology, new tool-less assembly systems, glue-less manufacturing processes and more besides. PWS’ new Mornington range supports Help For Heroes PWS has introduced Mornington, a new Shaker door range, to its extensive portfolio. Mornington is available in two design options – a simple classic Shaker style and a beaded Shaker. Mornington Beaded features an elegant quarter round bead, delivering an extra level of detail to create a more elegant look. Mornington is a 20mm solid ash timber frame, with a veneered centre panel, and is available ex stock in partridge grey, porcelain and stone, as well as a sanded finish. A further 21 colours are available on a paint-to-order basis, with a lead time of 11 working days from order to delivery. The timing of the introduction of Mornington coincides with the build up to Blood Sweat & Gears, PWS’ 320 mile South African cycle challenge in support of Help For Heroes in April 2016. Mark Stephenson, PWS’ CEO, will lead a team of four veterans, support staff and PWS colleagues over 18,000ft of punishing climbs across the Western Cape of South Africa with the aim of raising £250,000 for the charity. PWS will donate one percent of the price of every Mornington kitchen sold to the Blood Sweat & Gears team until the cycle ride concludes. In addition, the company is offering two display deals – donate £250 for

a 75% list price saving on a Mornington display and an additional 10% off the nett price on the first five Mornington orders, or, donate £500 for a free Mornington display and an additional 10% off the nett price on the first 10 Mornington orders. Comments Andrew Langford, marketing manager at PWS: “Shaker designs continue to be in great demand and Mornington is perfectly placed to offer our retailers the benefit of being an affordable timber door with two design options to choose from. It is also satisfying to know that every Mornington kitchen and display sold until the end of April will contribute towards the fundraising target for the Blood Sweat and Gears team to fund health and psychological wellbeing activities and programmes at Phoenix House, the Help For Heroes Recovery Centre in Catterick, North Yorkshire.” The Mornington range includes a choice of feature accessories, including a 300mm curved door and cornice, plinth and lighting pelmet, plus glazed door designs and a selection of decorative components to allow designers to add plenty of individuality to their designs. Where high cutting capacity is required, for example to cut thick timber beams, boards or planks, the GCM 12 SDE Professional provides cutting capacity of 120 x 400mm, with a standard 305mm saw blade. This tool offers the highest cutting capacity in its category, and is particularly suitable for tradespeople such as carpenters, landscape gardeners or stand constructors. Both sliding mitre saws have a variable torque setting of 3500 to 5000rpm or 3100 to 4000rpm. This allows them the flexibility to cut a variety of materials such as wood, plastic and metal. Both tools also include a bevel setting for both sides, and the bevel lock lever for this is located on the right-hand side next to the bevel scale. The position of this lever makes it simpler to operate, and tradespeople can fix

the required angle more easily. Both saws come with an SDS tool holder, so that the saw blade can be changed especially quickly and easily, without the need for additional tools. It enables the saw blade to be replaced in just a few steps. For efficient dust protection, both models are equipped with a two-unit dust extraction system. One dust extractor is positioned on the tool body, behind the saw blade. A second dust extractor is fitted on the saw arm. Both mitre saws are compatible with the Bosch Click & Clean System. Other features of the new GCM 8 SDE Professional and GCM 12 SDE Professional sliding mitre saws include a laser-projected cutting line, a transport handle and two removable side extensions to safely machine longer objects. The GCM 8 SDE Professional and GCM 12 SDE sliding mitre saws are available at specialist retail outlets for ÂŁ379 and for ÂŁ579. A premium-quality Expert for Wood saw blade is included for each saw. Expert circular saw blades offer a reliably high cutting quality and are available in a wide range of variants for a vast number of materials. All prices are recommended retail prices excluding VAT. Dust extraction specialists Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS) has recently completed a major energy-saving dust extraction installation for Routec GB Ltd.
Energy-saving extraction for Routec GB Routec, based in Beverley, East Yorkshire, focuses on the development and manufacture of products for three diverse industry sectors. Working closely with many of the leading shopfitting design agencies, it produces high quality Point-of-Sale retail display systems, many of which feature in internationally recognised outlets. For major producers of caravan and holiday homes, Routec manufactures a wide range of components such as worktops and frontals. And, under the Minster Doors brand, the firm manufactures a unique and popular style of three-piece, melamine-faced kitchen doors and carcasses. Employing 50 people and operating from a 93,000ft2 factory site, the company has a policy of constantly looking at new technologies and methods to improve efficiency. Paul Moxon, operations manager, says: “With the recent addition of a high-performance Biesse CNC Beam Saw, and with further new machinery planned, it was decided to replace the various individual dust extraction bag units which serve our beam saw, CNCs, edgebanders and panel saws with an externally-sited energy efficient plant, capable of extracting to a single point from all our current and future machines. The solution provided by DCS was for a dust extraction system comprising an externally-

sited Schuko EcoVar 2030 modular chain filter, controlled by an Ecogate energy saving system. The EcoVar filter has a total airflow volume of 52,000m3/hour, with filter cleaning carried out by a dual system which employs a cleaning fan housed at the top of the filter, and mechanical shaker system at the base. Collected waste is discharged into a 15kW fan-powered closed-loop waste transfer system, which delivers directly into a large capacity boxcart. The energy-efficient system employs a 75kW direct-drive main fan unit, extracting from a total of eight processing machines, and the main ducting system incorporates an ATEX-approved CARZ back-pressure flap valve which is designed to prevent the effect of a pressure wave and flames caused by an explosion from travelling upstream in the ductwork in which it is mounted. Installing an Ecogate system meant that the overall dust extraction system could be designed much smaller than with conventional technology; resulting in an average volume reduction of at least 22%, and providing power savings of more than 50%. The Ecogate system installed for Routec comprises a series of Ecogate motorised damper gates and sensors, which are fitted to each of the eight machines in the workshop. A greenBOX 12 controller detects changes in extraction load as machines come on or off line, and the speed of the main fan is continually adjusted via an Ecogate Power MASTER variable speed drive inverter unit. Paul Moxon adds: “We now have an extraction system which operates extremely efficiently, will save us around £7000 per year on electricity costs, and has provided a much quieter and dust-free working environment. Additionally, the plant is designed to return warm filtered air back into the factory in the winter.” T 0800 040 7116 W DCSlimited.co.uk

founder and MD Pete Smith explains: “In terms of an investment, Biesse’s Total Care package was perhaps the main reason why we initially chose their machines. “It was a question of signing the paperwork then just sitting back with complete peace of mind. We were previously spending £12,000 a year in maintenance on one machine alone, so to
have five years’ servicing included in the deal was a significant factor.” Total Care comes as standard with every Biesse machine and commences as soon as the order is signed. Total Care includes a site survey, off-loading, siting, installation, commissioning, training, five years’ planned maintenance and a full five-year (or 10,000 hour) warranty.

“We started with a Rover A and built up from there,” says Pete. “We now have the total capability to use any process in the manufacture of our furniture, which ensures flexibility in meeting our customers’ requirements. “Software is compatible on all machines, and we now have screen-to-machine ability, which saves an inordinate amount of time. We now have a Rover AG FT nesting cell, Sektor 440 beamsaw, Rover A Edge, Skipper 130 through-feed drilling machine with dowel insertion and an Akron 426. “It lifted everyone’s ambitions. We’ve increased production by 500% and have managed to win some very prestigious contracts as a result of our investment. One contract in particular is for a global brand, which we won on the strength of our capabilities. We are now much more competitive, not only in terms of cost but more importantly in terms of our overall capability and skill levels. “We now tend to get it right first time – quality has improved and efficiencies in terms of materials and time are obvious benefits. We’re happy to recommend Biesse and regularly act as a reference.” T 01327 300366 W biesse.com/uk

CMA Robotics recent partnership with MPS Ltd in Leicester has got off to a very positive start with the installation of a carousel robot for painting outdoor furniture products, using solid colour water based products.
CMA robotics installs its first carousel robot into the UK The client, Chris King of AFK Garden Furniture, had investigated a number of solutions to his spraying issues, which revolved around requirement for higher volume production, reducing reliance on manual sprayers and improving finish quality and reducing paint usage. Chris was pretty sure that robotic spraying was the answer, and after visiting CMA in Italy, was so convinced that the company offered the complete solution he was looking for and the order was duly placed. In the case of AFK Furniture, the products are programmed using a self-teach system which enables the operator to manually spray each type of product with the robot arm which then uploads the data required to the software, allowing the programmes to be stored. This self-teach process can be repeated to achieve the best possible results with regard to finish and programme time, and can be further enhanced by modifying programme speeds and functions. The three station carousel robot operates close to an overhead conveyor that functions from the assembly area through to the painting area where products are unhooked, checked with a bar code scanner – which contains all of the programme data for that particular product – and then manually placed on the carousel arm which then rotates towards the spray and extraction area where it stops for the spraying to commence via the robot arm. The product can be programmed to rotate during the painting cycle thus reducing spraying time by minimising the robot arm movements. Once sprayed there is automatically another work item waiting on the second carousel arm ready to move into position as arm one moves to the unload position. The third arm of the robot is loaded as the second arm moves into its waiting position, enabling almost constant production. AFK uses a number of different colours, and in conjunction with the spray equipment supplier, the system has been built with a two gun spray head and the facility to spray a number of different colours, with a fast, automatic, colourchange unit. The system also has a self clean programme to clean the system through and the robot can CMA 3D scanner with paper belt conveyor system
FP267_V18.indd 22
AFK Garden Furniture’s three station carousel robot from CMA Robotics be programmed to go to a ‘gun clean’ position for making sure the nozzles of the spray guns are kept clean and free of debris. The installation and training was completed over a two week period with the complete system fully up and running. Chris King says: “I have been so impressed with my experience with CMA from start to finish. Their software capability with the robots, and their experience as specialists in robot spraying technology, completely won me over. Knowing that MPS Ltd are providing UK support for CMA made our decision that much easier. “The installation has been a very smooth operation and I have been particularly pleased with the quality of the training provided by the engineer, who could not have been more knowledgeable and helpful. I believe this installation will prove to be a massive benefit to
my company going forwards and I already have plans for robot number two!” Chris believes that other products from his range, that are not hung on the overhead conveyor, may be suited to CMA’s overhead 3D scanning system with a paper belt conveyor. This system allows panels to be loaded onto a conveyor, in any order, and the parts are then scanned from above and automatically programmed from the data gathered. This information is simultaneously fed to the in-line robot which performs the finishing operation. The Cefla Finishing Group is a world leader in its field and Homag UK has been the exclusive UK distributor for Cefla products for many years
Cefla for a flawless finish to every job The partnership between the companies is a perfect match; the Homag Group has established its position as the world leader in the woodworking industry and only partners with companies whose business ethos matches that of the Group. “Cefla has emerged as the dominant force in automated paint and finishing equipment,” explains Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director of Homag UK. “It therefore made complete sense for us, as part of the market leading Homag Group, to partner with them here in the UK. The Cefla range is becoming more and more popular as companies of all sizes look to automate their finishing processes to improve consistency and reduce costs. “A case in point is the new updated and upgraded Cefla Easy reciprocating spray machine which is now more cost-effective, efficient and easy-to-use. It provides exceptional finish quality for wood products and is also ideal for many other applications such as plastics, glass, glue, metal, fibre cement and composites.” The Easy sets new standards for state-of-theart two-arm oscillating spray machines. Its spray control arms provide industry-leading articulation with simple programming which improves production speeds, reduces waste and lowers maintenance costs. High-precision spraying with patented coatings recovery system The Easy features high-precision photo diodes which enable precise part visioning to minimise overspray, increase productivity and reduce coatings waste. The 1950 mm wide solvent-proof carbon-fibre conveyor belt guarantees a longer life and allows for the production of a wider variety of part sizes. Cefla has introduced a patented coatings recovery system on the Easy. This all-new ‘counter-rotating’ roller removes and recovers more usable material from the belt without the negative effects seen with competitive ‘belt scraping’ systems. This results in

lower cleaning, coatings consumption and overall maintenance costs. The Cefla Easy also features an airsphere plenum system whereby a patented airflow and materialrecovery system improves the transfer efficiency and finish quality. At the same time, this system returns more coatings material for recycling thus reducing costs and equipment maintenance time. iGiottoApp: Six-axis articulating robotic sprayer for complex 2D and 3D surfaces The iGiottoApp is the result of 20 years of experience in designing and producing spraying robots. It is an anthropomorphic (having human characteristics) robot with a high-precision conveying system which is controlled by Cefla’s internally developed software. “The iGiottoApp is an impressive piece of kit,” claims Simon Brooks. “The machine can handle

parts of all shapes and sizes up to 3.0m x 1.3m; these are scanned automatically as they enter the machine.” The reading system can be either 2D with a photo-diode barrier or 3D with a laser and a vision system provided by a camera capable of reading the different shapes of the work pieces to be sprayed. The iGiottoApp automatically generates the spraying paths of the robot without the need for the paths to be pre-set via Autocad files. The spray gun holder is set up for three guns: two for surface applications and one for edges. The system can either be open with wire meshes and infrared barriers to comply with current health and safety regulations, or in closed booths with large windows and a pressurisation system for high quality finishing. A commitment to continuous improvement The Cefla Finishing Group offers the broadest range of finishing and coatings application equipment on the market today. It is committed to continuous improvement and offers solutions to coat virtually any substrate from wood, metal and glass to plastics and composites. Simon Brooks concludes: “Whether you’re in the furniture production, door, window or stairs market, panel processing, flooring or case goods industries, Cefla has a solution to help with its spray equipment, roller and vacuum coaters, and other automated systems. As part of the company’s commitment to engineering excellence, Cefla operates with the utmost respect for the environment through the continuous development of coating processes and equipment to meet regulations throughout the world.” To arrange a demonstration of the Cefla products call Karen Payen at Homag UK on 01332 856500. For many years JJ Smith Woodworking Machinery has offered specialist, bespoke equipment to suit customers’ individual production requirements. Rather than take a one-size-fits-all approach, JJ Smith has carefully selected a number of partners to work with each of whom is specialist in different, but associated sectors of manufacturing.
Specialist CNC machining solutions This is highlighted by the cooperation JJ Smith has established with three leading manufacturers of CNC equipment: Comec Group, Intorex and MZ Project. The Comec Group and JJ Smith have been working together for over 20 years, initially offering a range of mechanical drilling, slotting, shaping and cutting machines mainly for use in the solid wood furniture industry. As the Comec Group grew and expanded it entered into the design and manufacture of a range of specialist CNC machinery that can be adapted and used to produce a wide range of components. The Frontal series of machines consists of a vertical automatic hopper feed loader, with a step by step through-feed system which delivers the component to different machining stations which can include saw units, horizontal/vertical drilling, routing and end/face milling. This particular model of machine can be used for producing general furniture components, rails and in particular for drawer fronts, with three machines already working in the UK dedicated for this type of production. The MD series of CNC machining centre is available in three different versions MD Classic MD, Top and MD Jamb. All of these can be configured with a number of different machining heads, including vertical and/or horizontal milling heads and NC drilling groups which can be specified to work on all the faces/ends of a furniture rail. In addition, a C axis can be added meaning it is possible to cut components to size, with either straight or angled cutting. Another key feature of the MD is that it can be equipped with an automatic hopper feed loading system to offer continuous production. The MD Jamb model is specifically designed for the volume production of door components and
Comec MD series of CNC machining centres
door linings, with the possibility to have automatic infeed and outfeed loading systems. Intorex is known worldwide as a leading manufacturer of wood turning equipment, and in particular for its range of CNC lathes which has become increasingly popular due to its quick, simple set-up and flexibility. There are three different models to choose from, each offering different levels of productivity and machining options depending on customers individual requirements. In recent years Intorex has developed its range of four and five axis CNC ‘between centres’ machining centres which can produce a wide range of complex shaped furniture parts along with stair spindles and newel posts. JJ Smith says that the unique feature of these machines is the CNC-controlled sanding heads, which allows for the components to come off as finished sanded Intorex TC and TMC four/five axis CNC ‘between centres’ CNC items. machining centres, with in built sanding
FP267_V18.indd 30
In addition, thanks to the automatic hopper feed loading it is possible to set-up for continuous, uninterrupted production. The TC800 model is equipped with a CNC controlled milling head for shaping and then either one or two vertical/horizontal router heads that can perform other machining operations. The TMC model which can have a working capacity of either 1500 or 3000mm is fitted with a router head and six position automatic toolchanger and a milling head for shaping, giving even more machining possibilities. On request, it can also be fitted with flat bed Matrix tables meaning conventional fouraxis machining operations can take place, in addition to the five-axis ‘between centres’ operation. Finally from MZ Project there is a complete range of CNC-controlled bandsaw machines, which eliminates the need for manual cutting, marking out and jigs, meaning the operation is much quicker and safer than when using standard manual bandsaws. They can be specified to cut either solid wood and/or flat panel material with the top of the range Pluris model being fitted with router and drill heads meaning it is possible to cut nested sofa/chair frame parts from 2.5 x 1.2m sheets, with the possibility to cut up four boards high thus making the machine very productive. Daltons Wadkin is experiencing rapidly increasing sales in Kimla CNC routers from a wide range of industries. As the Kimla brand goes from strength to strength Alex Dalton explains why customers are choosing Kimla.
Kimla CNC router sales increase with demand for flexible production Kimla CNC routers sell themselves. If you are cutting panels, composites, plastics, solid wood or other material I always encourage customers to visit our showroom for a working demonstration on our stock machine. This is currently a Kimla BPF2131 with 2100 x 3100mm large format vacuum bed, automatic tool-changer, mist lubrication for non-ferrous metals and of course the Dynamic Vector Analysis (DVA) system all controlled through the powerful but intuitive Kimla software. The DVA system lies at the heart of the machine. Continually analysing over 15,000 lines of code a second, the Kimla knows where it’s going before it gets there, meaning increased machining speeds with unparalleled accuracy and finish.
Images of the Kimla rarely do it justice. When seeing the machine first-hand the physical build quality is immediately obvious. Nothing has been compromised, everything is designed and built around delivering maximum performance. An absurd machining accuracy of 0.001mm is testament to this. Kimla goes to great lengths to ensure only the very best components available are used throughout its machines. Where components from other suppliers do not meet its exacting standards they simply build its own. The control system and electrical components are a good example of this. Kimla has spent its entire working life in the development and continual refinement of its PC-CAM software. Included as standard with all Kimla machines, it offers a flexible CAD/CAM package that can be used directly at the machine or

remotely in the office or on a laptop. A lot of customers find themselves abandoning their existing third party programmes when they see how powerful and intuitive the Kimla software is. If however you already have a preference for other software PCCAM will also work with the vast majority of CAD/CAM packages on the market. Our range of customers is steadily increasing. Kimla machines are now employed in aerospace and automotive industries, bespoke fitted furniture and kitchen manufacturers, playground furniture

Since its inception in 1945, Weeke has always strived to push the technological boundaries, producing state of the art machinery for the woodworking industry
Weeke’s BHX CNC drilling centres range proves a success with record sales From humble beginnings, Weeke soon became established as a world market leading manufacturer of CNC machinery and equipment for panel processing and solid wood machining. It was Weeke’s passion for engineering excellence, attention to detail and, most of all, its ability to understand the needs of its customers that has led it to consistently develop revolutionary technology for the woodworking industry. Whilst technology has always been one of the cornerstones of the business, so too has Weeke’s attention to the market’s needs. The increasing move towards batch-size one production and the need for smaller footprint machinery were instrumental in the development of the BHX 050, a state-of-the-art drilling and routing CNC centre. Launched in 2009, it was an instant success and has been incredibly popular with total machine sales of over 3000.
Weeke’s ground-breaking BHX 050 ultra-compact drilling centre The Weeke BHX 050 Optimat is an ultracompact throughfeed drilling centre with an equally trim price tag from the Homag Group. It is considered the ideal drilling solution for all businesses whether small, medium or large. Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director of Homag UK comments: “Sales of the BHX 050 have been amazing. With over 3000 machines sold, clearly, it’s proved to be a real winner. It is an ideal CNC machining centre particularly for kitchen, bedroom or office furniture producers. “The unique advantage of the BHX 050 is that it is packed with all the features of a conventional CNC, but, with a footprint of less than 5m2, it’s small enough to fit comfortably in any production facility. What’s more, the icing on the cake is the price tag which is easily within reach of most manufacturers. We have been hugely successful with the BHX 050 in the UK
and demand for this versatile CNC machine continues to grow. “It is a reliable three-axis processing centre equipped for all drilling needs. It can drill on five sides and is capable of grooving and routing at fast throughput rates whilst, at the same time, keeping energy bills down due to its low energy usage.” Highly flexible The versatile BHX 050 is capable of processing panels as small as 200 x 70 x 12mm up to panels as big as 2500 x 850 x 60mm as standard. There is also an option to increase this working length to 3050mm. Simon continues: “The BHX 050 can process any type of wood panel and is most commonly used for MFC, MDF. We have had situations, however, where even demanding materials such as Trespa and solid wood components are being handled by this robust machine.”

The Weeke BHX 050 Optimat ultracompact drilling centre featuring the new powerTouch control system
A real time-saver that offers true value “Generally, smaller machines mean processing times are extended. The Weeke BHX 050, however, can match the rapid processing times of much larger machines. Customers that have seen the BHX 050 put through its paces, have been nothing but impressed by its capability. “Once the programming has been done, the set-up takes just seconds; it only requires the push of a pedal and press of a button to get it started. A really productive feature on the BHX 050 is the panel holding system. There are no vacuum pod or beam positions to worry about, the machine automatically positions the panel clamp correctly to suit each panel. “The BHX 050 is great for one-off production due to its immense flexibility and we have many customers using the machine for make to order ‘cabinet by cabinet’ production. All the operator has to do is load the parts – it’s simple and efficient. “Although it is classed as an entry level machine, no compromises have been made on build quality or safety. The BHX 050 has the features you’d expect from a Weeke machine, all at a real value for money price.”
The ultra-modern user interface offers an array of help and assistance functions designed to radically simplify the work experience. Standardised control elements and software modules ensure that all Homag Group machines can be operated with the same familiar look and feel using powerTouch. This not only simplifies the operation of different machines, but also makes for greater efficiency by significantly reducing time for servicing and training.
Fast and simple controls with powerTouch The new powerTouch system unites design with functionality in a totally new user interface. Central to the new system is a large wide-screen multi-touch monitor which enables the operator to control the machine’s functions by simply touching the screen.
“The BHX 050 is great for one-off production due to its immense flexibility and we have many customers using the machine for make to order ‘cabinet by cabinet’ production. All the operator has to do is load the parts – it’s simple and efficient.”

Weeke’s BHX 200 – The next generation Weeke unveiled its BHX 200 CNC processing centre, the next generation of small footprint vertical CNC technology, at Ligna 2013. This compact power pack requires less than 10m² installation space and selectable features include a powerful 9kW HSK routing spindle with a fourfold tool changer as well as a tiltable grooving saw. It is the big brother to the BHX 050/055 series and utilises the same vertical machining style. The BHX 200, however, boasts considerably faster machining speeds whilst maintaining high levels of precision, despite its small size.
The machine is equipped with two individually moveable high-speed drilling heads which activate a total of 36 high-speed drilling spindles enabling, for example, rows of holes to be processed considerably faster. As standard, the BHX 200 is equipped with two CNC-controlled no-vacuum clamping devices to precisely position and fix the work pieces during operation, so no setting times are required. The adjustable clamping system allows for larger work piece loads as well as a motorised work piece thickness adjustment. “We expect demand for the BHX 050, the 055 and the new 200 to continue to be very high in the UK. Our flexible finance solutions certainly put this amazing CNC technology within the reach of customers at all levels of business. Those wishing to arrange a demonstration of any of the Weeke BHX range can call Karen Payen at Homag UK,” concludes Simon. T 01332 856500 W homag-uk.co.uk

A new range of CNC machines will be unveiled by Italian CNC specialst Masterwood during 2016. This is the result of continuous development of machines to ensure we cover all our customers growing requirements.
Masterwood to launch new machines this year There are now four main ranges for three-, four- and five-axis machines, these are the entry level 200 series, followed by 300 (bridge construction) and 400 (cantilever version) and at the top end the 500 series. All the machines come complete with vertical and horizontal drilling, vertical router, automatic tool changer, and a patented tubeless pod and rail bed. Options that can be added to the machines include direct drive horizontal routers, C-axis (fourth axis), waste conveyors, thickness sensors, and automatic bed positioning systems. The machines can all take stack tooling up to 250mm in diameter, allowing traditional mortise and tenon joints to be fully machined. The Project 265 (pictured) has allowed new designs in the construction to give an improved performance and a greater cut in the Y axis (width), important for the door industry. Another new development available on all these machines is the patented MasterSet system, a low cost and very effective laser positioning system that allows the support arms and vacuum pods to be quickly and accurately positioned, once again putting Masterwood CNC machines at the forefront. A growing range of Matrix bed machines are also available along with fully automated lines. Software To compliment the range of Masterwood CNC machining centres is a complete range of software packages to cover all manufacturing requirements. Every machine is supplied with the long established MasterWorks CAD/CAM, a quick and easy system to design and programme for solid timber and panel components. Along with Master AT, the machines operating and optimising software, this system has allowed our customers an easy route into CNC without the complications and costs of more advanced software packages. To add to this entry package there is the Masterwood Stair package (worked in partnership with StairBiz). There are now over 130 customers in the UK and Ireland who use one of Masterwood’s stair packages – a great reflection on the dedication of the company to the solid timber industry. Further packages are available for windows,

Four North American woodworking experts have been passing on their skills to over 70 furniture enthusiasts at summer workshops at Royal Leamington Spa College.
Students flock to furniture crafts workshops at college Following the first successful course at the college last year, the New English Workshop worked with curriculum leader Jamie Ward to bring another summer school to the college in Leamington Spa. US TV star, Roy Underhill, and fellow woodworking authorities: Chris Schwarz, Peter Follansbee and Tom Fidgen, each ran five-day intensive woodworking courses in the college’s furniture workshop, with students from across the UK and Ireland travelling to take part. All the woodworking was done by hand – no machines. Roy’s group made a book stand designed by Thomas Jefferson, a pinch rod with metal work, a grease box and a nail curiosity. Chris’s students
made a knockdown bench while Peter’s group made a 17th century inspired green-oak carved box and Tom’s students made a sawyer’s bench. Royal Leamington Spa College has been running furniture crafts courses for over 60 years and has a track record in producing talented furniture makers. Jamie Ward has been the driver behind getting the prestigious workshops at the college.
He says: “I thought this was a great opportunity to show the wider woodwork community what fantastic facilities we have here. It’s a privilege to welcome these international experts to the college, and what’s even better is that nine of our own students got the chance to take part in the courses for free, so it’s been an amazing experience for them and for me.” W warwickshire.ac.uk

Size is important! Ateliers Mécaniques de Fegersheim is a long established manufacturer of heavy duty woodworking machines built using the proven material of cast iron. The original company – Tornos Plants of Illkirch-Strasbourg – was formed in 1920 and specialised in the manufacture of grey iron casting, and from 1923 the firm developed its own range of woodworking machines. In 1967, the company ceased the manufacture of castings and moved to its present site under the new name of Ateliers Mécaniques de Fegersheim and concentrated on the manufacture and supply of woodworking machines under the marketing names of UTIS. The new, high technology machine designs from UTIS – which included surface planers, thichnessers and spindle moulders
– still utilses the special properties of cast iron for the bodies and tables of the full range of machines. An example of the type of machine now made by UTIS today is the exceptionally large capacity R80 thicknesser which has a planing width of 830mm and 300mm thickness capacity. The table height setting is selected by entering the dimension required into the dial-a-size controller conveniently sited at the operators’ position and the table will automatically adjust to the new setting. Both infeed and outfeed rollers are steel giving a very long service life, the infeed roller is sectional and is paired to a cast iron sectional pressure bar. The table is fitted with two anti-friction adjustable bed rollers and has the option of an extended outfeed table to assist with very heavy timber components. The

Selecting the right skilled and experienced employees is good for business, but choosing the correct tools is also a key benefit for any new company.
A solid choice for tough surfaces For one of the leading Southwest fabrication companies, which produces solid surfaces including Corian and LG HI-MACS worksurfaces and counters for healthcare, domestic kitchens, sinks and cladding, being equipped effectively was a fundamental priority when it was founded six years ago. Furniture & Joinery Production spoke to Tim Nicholls, one of the founding partners of Simply Solid, about the investment decisions they made from the outset that have made sound business sense over the long term. “For the first year we were looking into products that our company needed to take on and how they could assist the business,” says Tim. “This was quite a long process as we work in the solid surface sector and there are only a handful of companies that offer the products we require to do our job. “This led me to have an in-depth look into each company and weigh up the pros and cons of its products in terms of how they align with the jobs we are doing, their ease of use and the overall cost to the business. In the end, after much deliberation, we decided to take on Mirka’s DEROS and CEROS sanders, its Abranet ACE and Abralon
abrasives as well as its polisher and Polarshine range, and we have been using them ever since. “After purchasing the CEROS and DEROS, which we use every day, there are a number of features, including their ease of use, that impressed us. The first are the brushless motors in both sanders, which, even though we produce a lot of abrasive dust when we use them, are not affected by it and always perform at their optimum levels. “The second is how well built the sanders are. They are so hard wearing and can deal with the rigours of continuous usage,” explains Tim. “An example of this is that in the five years we have used the CEROS, and in the past year we have been using the DEROS, we have only had to replace one CEROS sander. This is no mean feat considering how hard the surfaces we work on are and the amount of hours we have subjected them to since we bought them. “The final benefit is the lightweight design of the sanders, which makes them easy to handle when they are being used on any solid surface fabricated item, from work surfaces to cladding and sinks. “The abrasives, like the sanders, do exactly what they say on the
Both the CEROS and DEROS sanders feature excellent build quality ease of use among many other positive characteristics
“It was one of the best decisions we made as a business and our investment has more than paid for itself ” tin. The impressive Abranet ACE offers us high quality dust extraction combined with the sanders which allows our employees to work in a safe dust-free environment, whilst the Abralon gives us a high quality consistent finish, which is paramount in our industry and for the products we produce. “Now, I definitely pat myself on the back for taking the plunge with my partners and choosing Mirka’s
products five years ago. “It was one of the best decisions we made as a business and our investment has more than paid for itself. “The products have become an integral part of the team, as they make hard jobs easy and can be pushed harder and still produce a consistently high quality finish,” concludes Tim. IDS and Finsa host successful trend event Spanish surface materials specialist FINSA and UK distributor IDS hosted a successful event at the Innovation Centre, Great Portland Street last month where it showcased the latest trends in materials for the architectural, design and furniture sectors, coinciding with the launch of FINSA’s international Trendbook 2015-2016. Produced in partnership with the renowned Global Color Research trend prediction agency, the inspirational 70-page Trendbook acknowledges the importance of how social and cultural changes define the way we live and how we consume, new innovations in technology and how it inspires future surfaces. Visitors were encouraged to interact with the four cleverly-designed installations which portrayed the key design stories of Embrace, Nurture, Pioneer and Construct. Playing with texture, sound, smell and colour, each theme was explained by a member of the Finsa team. Embrace is the trend against the hardness of the digital age, and the need for creating multisensory spaces; Nurture is the growing trend to take better care of natural resources by creating
convincing surface materials through innovation; Pioneer looks at the impact of material technology and innovation; while Construct focuses on interiors rooted in artisan craftsmanship. Says Andrea Bainbridge, marketing manager at FINSA: “We were really happy with all of the feedback we received from our guests during the

Established over 30 years ago, Plumline Joinery is benefiting from biomass technology already, as it purchased some wood waste heaters from another manufacturer many years ago to free the business from the shackles of heating bills and waste removal costs. When one of its wood waste heaters broke recently, the management of Plumline needed to replace it, and contacted Wood Waste Technology for details about its range of heaters, as the company had heard about the quality and reliability of its products.
FP267_V18.indd 54
Following more information and a site survey, Wood Waste Technology’s specialist engineers installed a WT15 wood waste heater last year, to heat the far side of Plumline’s factory. Then three weeks later, the team at Plumline contacted the company again, due to Wood Waste Technology being the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. Plumline purchased a GAZ62 shredder, to help break down some of the waste wood for one of its older heaters, which struggled to burn some of the larger items of waste. MD of Plumline, Richard Beasley says: “Although we’ve had wood waste heaters in the
past, this product is our first from Wood Waste Technology. We’ve been really impressed with the WT15 along with matching service levels we’ve received. Moving forward we will definitely be in touch with them regarding any further requirements for commercial heating.” MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft says: “We’ve been delighted to help Plumline start to update their biomass heaters. We’re proud of the good reputation our heaters have developed, as every wood waste heater we’ve ever sold is still in operation today.” T 01785 250400 W woodwastetechnology.com W grossuk.co.uk

Makita adds innovative Makita continues to extend its range of 18v Lithium-ion powered cordless tools with the innovative brushless motor design. The feature reduces friction within the motor, releasing greater power from the engine. This consequently extends the runtime available from the battery whilst generating less heat. The product also requires a low level of maintenance, as the brushes do not need to be changed. The new Makita DFS452 LXT screwdriver runs up to 4000 rpm. The 0.25in hex push-drive shank comfortably drives home a 5mm drywall screw or a 6mm self-drilling screw. Weighing 1.7kg with an ergonomic soft grip handle, the screwdriver is equipped with a silent clutch, variable speed trigger, onetouch locator, a battery fuel gauge, lock-on button and a reverse switch option. The product is delivered in a type 2 Makpac case with two 18v Lithium-ion batteries, a DC18RC fast charger and a belt clip. The Makita brushless motor is also featured in two new cordless angle grinders – the DGA455 and the DGA505, which power 115mm and 125mm diameter grinding
wheels respectively. Both grinders include a paddle switch control for operator safety, and an automatic speed control to match cutting speed to load conditions. Operator protection includes an anti-kickback system and a Makita anti-restart function that requires the tool to be switched off then switched back on manually. The battery also has a full protection circuit and a current limiter. The new Makita DHS680 165mm cordless circular saw also benefits from the brushless motor with additional automatic speed control. The high specification tool is also equipped with the soft-start function and a larger base plate for operational stability. Makita advises that a rear dust port should be connected to the dust extraction system. W makitauk.com

Cause for concern over the potential toxicity of some flame-retardant chemicals has prompted the UK’s largest furniture association to investigate further.
Report into current and alternative flame-retardant technologies for furniture and furnishings Findings from research into current and alternative flame-retardant technologies used in furniture and furnishings has been released in a report entitled ‘Current and alternative flame-retardants for use in upholstered furniture’ by FIRA International on behalf of the Furniture Industry Research Association. The Furniture Industry Research Association provides invaluable technical support to the entire furniture supply chain and funds projects for the benefit of the industry. “The use of flame retardants in furniture and furnishings is of great significance, especially in the UK, where fire safety of upholstery is governed by national legislation. Failure to comply with these requirements could result in prosecution, fines, and potential recall of noncompliant product already placed on the market. “The potential toxicity of some flame retardants has been cause for concern which prompted the association to investigate the situation with current flame retardants and to look at possible alternatives,” explains Phil Reynolds, FIRA director.
Consumers are also becoming increasingly aware of the presence of, and necessity for, chemicals in goods and the effects that these chemicals might have on human health and the environment. However, the same consumers would also expect that the products that they purchase are safe in terms of fire safety. The research aims to address a knowledge gap in which FR chemicals are currently used in products sold in the UK and to look for alternative technologies for when chemicals are reviewed for the potential environmental impacts, which can result in their restriction. It answers the following key questions being asked by the furniture industry: • Why and how do we use flame retardant chemicals? • What types of flame-retardant chemicals are available for use? • What flame-retardant chemicals have been banned or restricted in use? • What alternative flame-retardant technologies are available?
FIRA director Phil Reynolds Phil continues: “The flame-retardant chemical industry is working hard to look for alternative chemicals and is actively involved in updating the furniture industry with progress through forums such as Fretwork which work together with all sectors of the supply chain to keep abreast of issues. We hope that this research and our continuing work in this area will assist the furniture and chemical industries to work together to find solutions to issues as they arise.” A summary of the findings from the project is available to download from www.fira.co.uk/ publications/research. The document can be accessed free of charge by members of the Furniture Industry Research Association. T 01438 777700 W fira.co.uk
