In the creative industries, companies that make it to the top, and who stay there for any considerable time, are those who are motivated to pursue innovation, rather than those who seek to be the best value – a rather obvious euphemism for being the cheapest. Relatively little that is the cheapest in any market is considered a good investment in the longer term. The trick is investing in the right innovation, and with so many machinery and equipment manufacturers and suppliers vying for your attention in a fast-changing marketplace – such as edgebanding – it is vitally important to make an informed decision. In this issue we look at the options from a numbers of top suppliers.

But, given the option, I believe it is crucial to see any major tech investment at first hand, live and in the flesh. Trade shows are of course a fantastic opportunity to compare and contrast various suppliers in the same location and by the time this issue’s out, there will only be around 230 days until W16 and the newly re-titled Essentials event for the fittings and components segment.

Before then however, there are a few unmissable at home events to get hands on with potential suppliers’ technology and materials. On the 17-19th February, Biesse is holding an array of halfday workshops at its Daventry HQ featuring input from industry specialists Decorative Panels, Henkel and Rehau, to clarify and demystify edgebanding’s zero-joint edgebanding opportunity.

BA Components takes over the Unilin Uniclic for furniture activities Unilin is handing over the production and sales of furniture components with the Uniclic for furniture technology to one of its major customers, BA Components. The Uniclic for furniture technology, developed by Unilin, allows you to click various panels together without any tools. BA Components, which operates in more than 20 worldwide markets, signed a license agreement with Unilin for the Uniclic for furniture technology and will also take over and further continue the production and sales activities of ClicBox, a commercial range of components with Uniclic technology mainly used in kitchens. Having signed the license agreement, BA have purchased the production machinery used for Uniclic for furniture and invested in a new purpose-designed production facility in South Yorkshire where it already has a manufacturing base. ClicBox was launched by Unilin just over two years ago. BA Components will guarantee the production capacity to ensure continuous supply to the market, a seamless transition and establish the brand further within the marketplace in order to support the further growth of the business. Jan Battheu, sales and marketing director at Unilin, division Panels is happy to see BA Components further develop the furniture components. “We are convinced that the ClicBox range is a perfect match with BA Components’ current activities and product offer, allowing us

BA Components directors – Brian and Kieran McCracken to concentrate more on our core business.” Kieran McCracken, BA’s operations director and the man ultimately responsible for the smooth production transition, says: “We are excited by both the challenge and opportunity this offers and would like to thank Unilin for the manner in which the negotiations have been conducted. We are looking forward to further establishing the Uniclic for furniture products not

only here in the UK but throughout our global sales network.” Unilin, division Panels, will continue the production and sales activities of furniture components and the ClicBox range until BA components takes over full production from the July of this year. W unilinpanels.com W byba.co.uk

Weinig celebrates its sixth 25 year service award Weinig UK after sales administrator Tony Hooper has just celebrated 25 years with the company, and is the sixth employee of Weinig UK to do so. Over the last three years, five employees in the Weinig UK service department in Abingdon have been presented with their 25 year service awards, and they were joined by after sales administrator Tony last month. The Weinig Group says it gives its customers a five-star after sales service and the longevity and loyalty of its staff says a lot about the company and its service philosophy. Tony started his working life at an automotive parts packaging company but family connections with other Weinig employees led to a position in the stores at Weinig UK. This led on to the essential support department of spare parts and service. “The biggest change over the last 25 years has been the advances in technology,” says Tony. “Long gone are the manuals for cross-checking parts. Telelex, faxes, stand-alone computers mean my role has evolved; now I work with two screens, and could use a third!” Tony knows his numbers – vital in the evergrowing spare parts sector. “The Weinig product range is expanding, not to mention the added products as the Weinig Group of companies continues to grow. I deal directly with customers as well as the agents, and we are proactive and anticipate customers’ needs whenever we can,” he says. “I enjoy my job and 25 years has gone fast!

FP268_pages.2.indd 4

Tony Hooper celebrates 25 years service for Weinig UK There is no real secret – the company is reliable, stable, growing, and looks after us, and we look after it and our customers.” Malcolm Cuthbertson, managing director of Weinig UK says: “For an employee to commit 25 years to one company is an impressive achievement, but to have six is extraordinary and represents a wealth of experience. Tony has my personal congratulations and I am sure this will be echoed by many people in the industry.”

Weinig gives service back-up its highest priority, building an enviable reputation, and believes that service is the lifeblood of woodworking manufacturers. Customer service in Weinig is not just a department, it is an attitude. It guarantees prompt service cover on its whole range of solid wood processing machinery – its speciality. Finishing Brands, one of the leading manufacturers of spray painting equipment in the world have released a new, bigger 12-page A4 catalogue that includes much more company and technical information on the entire Binks, DeVilbiss and Ransburg spray painting product line, including more market, application, specification and part number ordering information. Achieving the perfect finish for the wood job starts by matching the finishing spray materials with the correct spray application method and equipment. Joinery firm wins National Apprenticeship Award Adary Joiners from Challerton has won the Unilever Small Employer of the Year at the National Apprenticeship Awards at an exclusive ceremony at London’s Grosvenor House. The Awards, now in their twelfth year, are run by the National Apprenticeship Service and recognise excellence in two areas: businesses that grow their own talent with apprentices and apprentices who have made a significant contribution to their workplaces. The company was chosen as the winner in recognition of its commitment to developing young people through apprenticeships. Employment minister Priti Patel says: “I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to Adary Joiners of Oldham for their fantastic achievement in being named Unilever Small Employer of the Year. “Apprenticeships offer a fantastic way for many young people of all backgrounds to earn as they learn while providing employers with the transferable skills needed to take their business from strength to strength. We currently have record-breaking levels of employment – and this is boosted by prospects like apprenticeships. I want to see this continue.” Adary Joiners is a small joinery business. Partners Lucy and Gary Sidlow set up the business three years ago with just two subcontracted joiners. The business grew rapidly and

they soon realised that the sub-contracted joiners were free to leave the company at a moment’s notice so started employing joiners directly. In order to future proof the business, they decided to employ their first apprentice in September 2012 and have taken on three more since. On accepting the award, Gary Sidlow, partner at Adary Joiners, says: “Our strategy is to build a core team of enthusiastic and skilled joiners, specialists in our field, ensuring the continuity of our business. The apprenticeship programme fits perfectly with this strategy as we train and mould our apprentices to the specific joinery we undertake. They will be ambassadors for us and our future leaders. “We plan to continue to take new apprentices every year as our business grows, offering apprentices who finish their apprenticeship options for either further study, becoming an approved contractor or long term employment with ourselves.” Nadhim Zahawi, the Prime Minister’s apprenticeships adviser, who presented the awards, says: “The Prime Minister has committed to three million apprenticeship starts by 2020 and I am excited to have a role in helping to deliver this goal, while pushing to revolutionise the skills of our workforce in Britain. Good quality apprenticeships create a fairer society by giving hard working young people the chance to aim for their dream job whilst playing their part in building

a stronger economy for Britain.” The ceremony also saw Adary Joiners named in the prestigious Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer list. The list, which is compiled annually by the National Apprenticeship Service, sponsored by City & Guilds, recognises excellence in businesses that employ apprentices. To view the full list of award winners and finalists or for more information about apprenticeships, search on gov.uk.

OBITUARY

Michael Lee The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) has sadly announced the death of Michael Lee, BWF Membership Director, after a short battle with illness. In the spirit of the joinery industry, Mike started work as a 17 year old apprentice with the National Federation of Building Trade Employers in August 1967, the organisation from which the BWF evolved. In a letter to his headmistress at the time the organisation wrote: “We are anxious that the young man we appoint shall develop an attractive and diplomatic personality which will in due course fit him for more responsible positions in the organisation.” Mike did not disappoint and grew with the organisation to become BWF Secretary, a post he held for 20 years, before becoming Membership Director in 2007. Mike was front and centre throughout the evolution of the BWF and was pivotal in moving the BWF to a Limited Company in 2006, and developing into the independent, self-sustaining and powerful voice for the woodworking sector it is today. Despite his incredible service period, Mike never lost his enthusiasm for his work and in his final years led the largest membership growth the organisation has ever seen, bringing membership numbers to over 700, a 50% increase on 2010 levels. His efforts helped to secure the Membership Success Award for the BWF at the Trade Association Forum Awards in 2014. In nearly 50 years in the industry, Mike developed an in-depth knowledge of how the industry works, its culture and personality; he had a knack for being

FP268_pages.2.indd 8

able to spot the needs of members before they knew they needed it themselves. In 2013 Mike picked up the RoSPA SME Advice Award on behalf of the BWF and spurred on by this, he launched the Health & Safety Hero campaign, focussing on cultural change in the industry. This campaign continues to grow thanks to his determination. Many BWF members past and present will recall him as their main point of contact with the federation. As well as spending a great deal of his time on the road visiting joinery businesses in their workshops, factories and offices, he was deeply trusted and respected for his advice on anything from health & safety to employment, legal and business support. He was a respected figure outside of the membership too, having built strong relationships with the HSE and other industry bodies including committees and suppliers. In addition to his professional achievements, Mike was a strong family man. He leaves behind loving wife Irene and their two daughters Naomi and Eleanor. His daughters both followed in Mike’s footsteps into the built environment, studying architecture, and will no doubt fly the flag for timber and joinery as part of their work. Mike loved making things out of wood himself, and had kitted out a new shed in his back garden with woodworking machinery so that he could work on his own woodworking projects. Mike was also an avid collector of vintage Superhero comics. Mike passed away aged 65. He will be sadly missed by colleagues, friends and members.

Zero Glue Line technologies, like most new processes, are generally surrounded by mystique. So Biesse decided it would be good to shed light on the subject and bring together industry experts in tape, glue, board and of course machines, to provide an understanding of how a perfect edge is achieved.

Biesse has teamed up with Rehau, Henkel and Decorative Panels to help them remove the mystery and will be running a series of free, half-day workshops on Tuesday 16th, Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th February at the company’s Daventry Tech Centre. Visitors will have the opportunity to test drive edgebanders equipped to process and apply edges in both conventonal tape, with PUR glue and functonal layer edge tape without any glue. See perfect gloss panels edged on all four sides, matt panels with a look of painted finish, seamless edged worktops, carcass panels without a black glue-line and more. Rehau offers an optimum solution in terms of design, function and processing from conventional edgeband with primer to 100% polymer functional layer. No glue line, no problem. Rehau is one of the worlds pre-eminent polymer experts, and visitors can learn all there is to know about Raukantex edgebanding and the different options for processing. In particular, Rehau technicians will be on hand to answer all your questions about Raukantex pro, the edgeband with a 100% polymer functional layer which is suitable for all zero joint processing technologies. Additionally, there will be information about the extensive Rehau Express Collection. Consisting of over 1200 colours and decorative

designs, and a choice 8000 variants to define dimension, laquer and embossing, the stock program is available at short notice in small quantities. For bespoke requirements, small production volumes are available from the non-standard range. Henkel is one of the world’s top adhesive firms and its Technomelt PUR for edgebanding is widely recognised as a proven performer. More and more furniture manufacturers are already benefiting from the use of PUR hot melt adhesives. At Biesse’s workshop visitors can learn more about how to combine outstanding edge design with long-lasting bond security. Henkel says the key features of its Technomelt product are: unmatched moisture resistance; the highest heat resistance, up to 150°C; ultimate bond strength on all common edge materials; low application weight for very thin glue line and clean running for ready-to-sell surfaces. Importantly, a buffet lunch will be served at all sessions making this a very useful and ejoyable way to unravel the options and opportunities of modern edging techniques and technologies. Visitors considering attending will need to register. T 01327 300366 E info@biesse.co.uk W biesse.co.uk

Elements: the new components show at the NEC Founder of the W exhibition brand, Montgomery, has introduced Elements, a new components show taking place at the NEC on the 2nd – 5th October 2016. Working along side the long-standing woodworking machinery and materials exhibition, W16, Elements will feature a wide range of finishing products for the KBB, furniture production and interior design market. Stands will include the very latest wirework and storage solutions, hardware, décors and edging, components and materials from the UK, Europe and further afield. The only components show in the UK, Elements will provide visitors with an exclusive opportunity to see the latest products and prototypes right here in the UK and the lineup of big name companies includes brand leaders like Döllken, Ostermann, Hranipex, David Clouting and Quinn Global. With half the exhibition area already sold and a strong line-up already confirmed, the four-day event is creating a fresh approach to trade fairs. In addition to stands, visitors will be able to attend seminars held by leading industry figures and experience three interactive zones:

FP268_pages.2.indd 12

The Innovation Zone will showcase the latest design innovations on the market and promote newly launched products, whilst offering visitors an opportunity to meet the manufacturers face to face. The Best Practice Zone will offer visitors practical advice relating to the industry. Specialist recruitment agencies, health and safety officers, business finance gurus and marketing experts will be on hand throughout the event to offer advice and guidance to those already working in the industry and those interested in a career in the sector. The Competition Zone will feature a live, interactive competition where college students from across the UK compete to win valuable

work experience with one of the biggest names in the industry. Working closely with Didac Training College, a winner will be announced on the final day of the show. Lisa Campagnola, event manager for Elements, adds: “With a history of running events in the building, construction and woodworking sectors, it seemed fitting to add a show to the Montgomery portfolio that completes the manufacturing cycle. The UK market has relied heavily on European component shows in past years. Now, with the launch of Elements, visitors can experience the very latest products from the UK, Europe and further afield at home at the NEC this October.” W wexhibition.co.uk

World premiere – Freestyle five-axis CNC technology The new CNC machine concept is based on compact technology and almost automatic 360° handling. The Venture 115 can be accessed from all sides and, thanks to the new safety technology, can be operated from all around. The Venture 115 five-axis machine is, however, just one of nine possible configurations in the series. There are also three-, four- and five-axis entry-

level solutions available for horizontal CNC processing. The machine can be commissioned within one day and requires only a compact installation area due to its reduced footprint. The family of Venture BMG 300 processing centres has also grown. The specification of the new Venture BMG 312/V eliminates the need for customers to have to decide between purchasing five-axis technology or a machine for edgebanding shaped parts. The new BMG 312/V combines both technologies in one model. The new SWT 200 Sander – compact, fast and intuitive This new high-tech sander with a smaller footprint offers shorter set-up times and improved user-friendliness. The focus for the operating concept and the sanding units on the SWT 200 was to make the machine faster and safer to configure. Belts can therefore be changed, attached and the grain calibrated in just a few easy steps. The measurement of workpiece thickness is also automated and the model features two additional unit slots for post-processing.

HOLZMA HPP 130 – the must-see saw The new HOLZMA HPP 130 makes it easier than ever to start precision production because it is perfectly aligned with the requirements of the trade sector. The compact saw is equipped with everything that the user needs for cutting single panels and small series. Features include a saw blade projection of 60mm, a cutting length of 3200mm and the CADmatic 4 PRACTIVE machine control unit. The HPP 130 costs little more than a wellequipped circular saw, yet provides a much more precise and efficient cutting process. From a compact 80m² workshop to industrial use Growing with the Homag Group is more than just a motto. Homag systems and equipment are designed so that, for example, a compact 80m² workshop today can grow to become an entry-level industrial solution in future. At Holz-Handwerk the Homag Group is presenting a wide range of options for expanding production on a modular basis at any time. This gives businesses the flexibility to respond to tomorrow’s requirements, increase efficiency and optimise work processes.

With intelligent workshop concepts and a wide range of individual machines – saws, storage, CNC technology, sanding technology, throughfeed machines, transport, handling and automation – the Homag Group demonstrates just how efficient production can be, including co-ordinated operating and data concepts. Homag eSOLUTION provides integrated software for all aspects from sale to delivery of the finished furniture. For example, the Homag Group is displaying the

woodCAD|CAM software solution which provides a simple and reliable process from the initial idea to the finished product – including 3D room planning at the customer’s point-of-sale, free design and a fullyfledged CAD program. All software solutions, including woodNET and woodFactory, can be used either as stand-alone solutions or in combination. The modular structure allows the software to be introduced into the company step by step. In the trade sector, there is a

noticeable trend toward automation and logistics. Here, the Homag Group is impressing everyone with a new saw-storage combination consisting of the HOLZMA HPP 300 profiLine panel dividing saw and the Homag TLF 211 area storage system. A particularly unusual feature is the ability to transport panels with a textured surface using a newly developed special suction device. Edge processing is not resting on its laurels in terms of automation either, playing a trump card with an edge The new Homag powerProfiler BMB models – innovative clamping technology within window manufacturing

processing cell featuring circulation and a barcode reading system. Homag powerProfiler BMB800/900 – the benchmark for flexibility and performance in window processing The powerProfiler BMB800/900 represents the new generation of window processing machines. With its options, scalability and performance, this is one impressive machine. It features new gripping and clamping technology with new options for profile design and also has the ability to process not only straight parts but also curved elements and doors. Parallel processing of multiple components and quick tool changes ensure high performance, even with complex work processes. Automation solutions with feed and interlinking options to the upstream plane or the subsequent flow priming integrate the powerProfiler as the core in an integrated continuous production in batch size one. Wood and panel machinery open house exhibition at Daltons Wadkin Nottingham, 8-10th March

Following the huge success of previous open house shows, Daltons Wadkin will once again welcome visitors to its forthcoming three-day exhibition featuring the latest in machine technology for the wood, panel and composite processing sectors. A team of technical advisers, engineers, operator trainers and sales staff will be on hand to discuss each visitor’s individual requirements and provide working demonstrations on a wide range of CNC and conventionally-operated equipment. PANEL PROCESSING A key feature of the March Open House will be the introduction of CEHISA edgebanders. Three hot-melt models will be on demonstration. The EP-C3 is

FP268_pages.2.indd 18

manually fed for internal and external radius work as well as straight edging. For through-feed straight work, the Flexy is an economical and compact entry-level edgebander for PVC, ABS, PP and veneer edging up to 2mm with touch-screen control. The Compact PCS model offers increased capacity for 3mm edging and is equipped with pre-milling and corner rounding for a high finish. One of the most impressive machines at the exhibition will be the Kimla BPF2131 three axis CNC router. The Kimla has continually impressed visitors at previous shows with its speed, build quality, accuracy, software and versatility across a wide range of materials. The BPF2131 on demonstration will include a large format 2.1 x 3.1m vacuum bed and automatic tool

changer for nesting applications. For sign and graphic applications the machine also includes a camera recognition system for cutting out pre-printed materials. Panel saws will be extensively covered by Altendorf and Elcon. “This is an excellent chance to see the market leaders in panel saw technology with two distinct methods of panel sizing – vertical and horizontal,” comments Daltons Wadkin director, Alex Dalton. The Altendorf WA6 is an entry level machine but well equipped with 2600mm sliding table and scoring saw. For larger applications the new flagship F45 model will show why Altendorf is the world leader in panel saw technology. Three Elcon vertical panel saws will demonstrate the wide range of features available across the models.

TITAN is a large capacity machine with an automatic cutting cycle and cutting depth of 150mm designed for sandwich panels in a range of materials. LIMPIO is the patented dust extraction system from Elcon continually removing dust from both sides of the panel during cutting to minimise dust exposure to the operator – particularly useful for fibrous or cementitious materials such as MDF and plasterboard. For a cost-effective entry level vertical panel saw, the D model provides a compact and accurate solution. The Maggi range of automatic and semi-automatic boring machines will be represented by the new 21 Technology model and the all-new Evolution 1000 CNC borer with router function, never before seen in the UK.

SOLID WOOD PROCESSING Salvador crosscut saws will be represented by the ever-popular SuperPush 200 and Classic 50. The SuperPush is a high performance fully automatic optimising and defecting machine. Working demonstrations will highlight heavy duty build quality and simple user interface for inputting one-off or complex cutting lists with grading priorities. The Classic 50 is a semi-automatic up-stroke machine for crosscutting large sections at 90°, complete with pneumatic length stops. “Salvador is fast becoming the go-to name for customers looking for a cost-cutting crosscut. Our installations deliver immediate savings with increased quality and production volume with huge savings in labour and material

waste,” enthuses Andy Walsh, sales director at Daltons Wadkin. Continuing with solid wood processing, the brand new E350 multi-rip from CML will be on demonstration. Never before exhibited in the UK, the E350 is the smallest machine in the CML range and has been designed as a versatile, compact, but powerful multi-rip. Equipped with a programmable moving blade, 30hp motor and 80mm cutting depth, the machine is ideal for edging and multi-rip processes and carries the standard bomb-proof build quality found throughout the CML range. For resaw applications, the industry standard Stenner ST100R will be on show. Needing no introduction, Stenner machines can be found in sawmills the world

over. The ST100R is the most popular of the standalone pitless resaws, and has been replacing older style machines with its 4in blade capacity, pneumatic strain, photocell automatic feed system and HMI control for simple user operation. Although a run of recent planermoulder sales have emptied the current stock, Daltons Wadkin hopes to take delivery of Kuper and Leadermac planer-moulders in time for the show. Visitors are asked to enquire to avoid disappointment. Finally, Classical woodworking machinery from Wadkin will include a cross section of key models including the BRA crosscut, CST planer thicknesser, PBR/HD band resaw and Series 5 1100C widebelt sander.

“The range continues to uphold the exacting standards of build quality for which the Wadkin name has been synonymous,” explains Alex, “Visitors will be able to see a mix of the industry-standard models as well as some of the more recent additions to the range.” In addition to the machines on display, visitors will also have the opportunity to discuss any training, tooling and service requirements as well as view the extensive range of second hand machinery available. Mirka’s new Gold Max abrasive achieves a higher cut rate even on harder paints

Mirka goes for gold Mirka UK is launching its new Gold Max abrasive line-up specifically for long-, narrow- and wide-belt sanders designed for paint and lacquer sanding. Its stearate coating minimises clogging and pillforming when the abrasive is in use, leading to increased durability of the product and less down time for the machine. The abrasive’s blue fired aluminium oxide grains enable it to achieve a high cut rate even on harder paints. Its innovative anti-static E-paper provides the abrasive with added strength and stability to offer efficient sanding and a smooth surface finish whilst the semi-open coating minimises the dust loading on the abrasive so that it can be used on a variety of intermediate and fine sanding applications. Pete Sartain, national sales manager – industrial of Mirka UK, says: “The launch of the new Gold Max abrasive range expands our portfolio for belt sanders and is part of our continued product development programme ensuring Mirka is at the forefront of abrasive technology. “The product has been designed and developed by our R&D department at our headquarters in Jeppo, Finland to offer the user a versatile and innovative product which meets the high standards our customers have come to expect from a Mirka abrasive in terms of efficiency, productivity and durability.” T 01908 866100 W mirka.com

EasyStop from Weinig – the only tape measure needed EasyStop is the new automatic length stop from Weinig. Used in combination with virtually any machine for cutting, drilling or milling of any material, the automatic length stop provides faster, more comfortable, and more precise processing. For any process that repeatedly requires a tape measure, the EasyStop provides fast, repeatable measurement which is accurate to +/- 0.1mm. Malcolm Cuthbertson, managing director of Weinig UK, says: “Careful measuring is necessary, but if you have an operator doing it regularly, it’s inefficient, slow and expensive in time and, when the measurements aren’t quite right, wasted material. “EasyStop is a very simple, precise and easy-to-use solution that fits with almost any machine to process almost any material.” The OptiCom Assist user interface could not be simpler for set up or use. Absolute position of the positioning stop is actively monitored by the software and extreme loads are compensated by the integrated intelligent drive control – the hydraulic buffer means if the stop is knocked, the measurement will still be accurate. As the brains of the EasyStop, the OptiCom Assist user interface is intuitive and requires minimal training. Clear and easy to use, the interface guarantees efficient operation regardless of operating experience. With modes for both manual operation and list operation, the operator can set a desired length, or save 10 lists with 20 lengths each for fast processing of complete sets. Other features include consideration of multiple lengths required, actual number of pieces, and editing of individual workpieces or workpiece packages. The EasyStop comes with its own stand and has options for roller tables. Cracked Oak in a contract application

Latham’s latest veneers stand out from the crowd One of the UK’s biggest independent timber and panel products distributors, James Latham, has announced the arrival of a new range of exclusive, premium quality real wood veneers that are certain to have a big impact, not only with furniture manufacturers, but with the wider architecture and interior design sectors. The distinctive and inspiring collection allows designers to create timeless environments with spectacular effects and finishes that will bring a particular depth, texture and individuality to a project that is impossible to achieve with artificial materials. Steve Frommont, director of Lathams, comments: “The authentic, warm and natural beauty shines through in this new range of veneers, highlighting the unique characteristics, grain and tone of the wood. Initial reaction from customers that we have shown it to has been extremely positive and I’m certain that it will be a big success.” The new collection of real wood veneers which is directly available from stock through James Latham’s nationwide network of depots, is ideal for interior decoration applications in many different segments and it is already proving particularly popular in residential, hospitality, commercial and shopfitting applications. 34 EDGEBANDING

View further content at furnitureproduction.net

New Alpha-Tape Zero PP is seen as a consistently high performing, co-extruded edging tape and for this reason, as well as its superior finish to other methods, is the only laser/hot air edging that Warwick Edging will be holding in stock.

Warwick Edging stocks MKT’s innovative zero joint edgebanding For manufacturers looking for zero joint edgebanding options, there are a number of techniques and associated products to consider. One edging option which can be used with all currently available techniques without modification is Moderne Kunststoffe-Technik’s impressive Alpha-Tape Zero PP – stocked exclusively in the UK by Warwick Edging. Alpha-Tape Zero PP is an advanced edgebanding product – one edgebanding for all zero joint techniques. The fact that Warwick Edging has selected this product is a recommendation itself as the company is well placed to pass judgement regarding edging matters, materials and solutions. Warwick Edging and the German edgebanding specialist Moderne Kunststoffe-Technik (MKT) have a growing professional relationship and both parties have worked hard to tailor this technology to the specific demands of the UK market. Among the stand-out features of the co-extruded Alpha-Tape Zero PP product is that it can be deployed using any of the currently available zero-joint techniques – such as hot-melt and Near-Infrared-Radiation (NIR) – without the need for any specific modifications. In use, the Alpha-Tape Zero PP performs consistently, giving the operator added confidence. No colour change needs to be feared because of the temperature stress

Warwick Edging stocks the impressive Alpha-Tape Zero PP by MKT has been developed with the UK market in mind thanks to the perfect colour match of the functional layer to the top layer of the edgebanding board. The manufacturer says an invisible and seamless transition in all technologies will be achieved. Dirt and moisture cannot penetrate into the fully welded corner joint. MKT says that compared to any other nojoint edgebandings, Alpha-Tape Zero PP can be fully welded with itself.

Warwick Edging’s James Woolley says: “The Alpha-Tape Zero PP is a co-extruded laser/hot air tape that we believe is far superior to other zero joint methods and materials on the market, and for that reason, it’s the only type we are stocking. “One key advantage of the AlphaTape Zero PP is the hard functional layer that other co-extruded edgebandings on the market do

not have. The main advantage this brings is that over time, dirt and moisture cannot penetrate the functional layer of the edging, causing almost the appearance of something very similar to a glue line, which was what was set out to be eliminated,” explains James. Warwick Edging says that the heat resistance of Alpha-Tape Zero PP is significant and that ageing

to improve efficiency and finish on edging up to 2mm. Touch screen control is standard, with optional pre-milling, corner rounding, buffing and scraping units able to be specified individually for a low cost introduction to through-feed edgebanding. Compact has a faster feed rate, increased edging capacity up to 3mm and a large 7in touch screen control. The Compact model is also available with any combination of pre-milling, corner rounding, buffing and scraping units for higher volume production. EC is for both linear and curved work, the manually-fed EC models providing flexibility for creativity while maintaining a high standard of finish with hot-melt edge application, edge trimmers and end trimming. The three edgebanders will also form an integral part of Daltons Wadkin’s muchanticipated wood and panel machining open house exhibition, from 8-10th March. “We have had tremendous success with our past open house exhibitions,” comments Andy Walsh, sales director at Daltons Wadkin. “This March will see our biggest event yet with over 20 machines on

demonstration for wood and panel processing including panel saws, edgebanders, CNC borers, CNC routers, sanders, multi-rips, resaws, optimising crosscuts and more!” Founded in 1956, Spanish firm CEHISA has been manufacturing edgebanders since 1968. Today’s range is the culmination of almost 50 years’ experience and continual research and development, and it shows. “Price is never our primary consideration when sourcing equipment for our customers, but the CEHISA range are incredible value for money,” says Andy. “They achieve this by manufacturing virtually every aspect of the machines in house, maintaining strict quality control. Feed back from our customers to date has been encouraging and I look forward to showing the range off at our open house.” For more information on the wood and panel machining open house, or to discuss edgbander requirements in detail, contact a member of the Daltons Wadkin team. Homag UK sales and marketing director Simon Brooks helps shed some light on the increasingly complicated world of edgebanding in the modern era.

Homag demystifies the increasingly complex world of edgebanding

Zero-joint technology increasingly popular for its consistently high quality finish Advances in technology have driven quality expectations higher and higher, particularly in manufacturing. The furniture industry is no exception and one manifestation of this is the advent of edgebanding without joints or, as it is more commonly known, zero-joint technology. “There is now a mind-boggling range of options to choose from, so we thought it would be a good idea to demystify the process“ Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director of Homag UK explains. “The Homag Group has been a pioneer of edgebanding since 1960 and so, with over 55 years’ experience under its belt, is well placed to explain the potentially confusing world of edging.” Cost-effective EVA glue The original edging solution, EVA offers simple, clean, reliable edgebanding which can be used

on a wide range of board and edge materials. It is the conventional hot melt adhesive that provides a cost-effective option for all standard edging requirements. Hot melt adhesives are polymer based and are 100% solids, containing no solvents or water. The lack of water and solvents allow hot melts to attain peak bonding strength very quickly. Water-resistant PUR glue Higher specification jobs can require water- or heat-resistant products and PUR adhesive provides this additional performance. Far less PUR adhesive per square metre is required to form a much stronger bond when compared to traditional hot melts. Consequently, this reduced volume of adhesive results in a very tight glue line. It also offers superior bond strength to EVA, although it does take longer to fully cure than the instant grab of EVA; this, however, has no detriment to the quality

The Brandt Ambition 1230 airTec – zero-joint technology at an affordable price

FP268_pages.2.indd 38

of the product whatsoever. Nowadays, having seen major advances in the chemistry of PUR adhesive, it is a trouble-free bonding material providing a cross-linked bond that once fully cured is very strong and very stable. PUR can be used on a wide range of materials and is particularly popular in the kitchen, bathroom, washroom and door markets due to its ability to resist moisture and heat. airTec technology The airTec technology uses hot air and special edge material to form an invisible or zero-joint. The special edge material consists of a hard décor layer backed with a meltable functional layer. This functional layer is melted by the hot air and then pressed onto the panel edge. The airTec process is very clean and cost effective and results in perfectly crafted products, where joints are no longer visible. The airTec system is available across Homag’s full range of edgebanders allowing even the smaller business to compete in the invisible joint market where frontals such as doors and drawers need to be at a very high standard. laserTec for high volume invisible edging Laser technology enables manufacturers to produce invisible joints at high volumes. The laser fuses the edgeband to the panel at speeds of up to 60m/min and delivers perfect quality every time. Homag’s system, laserTec, is a simple but highly effective solution that delivers more parts produced per unit of time. Laser joining allows consistent production quality to be achieved and a reduction of the staff costs associated with postprocessing and finishing.

The Homag Ambition 2274 – zero-joint technology for larger manufacturers

A solution for every need Simon continues: “The immense knowledge and experience that the Homag Group has amassed has enabled the company to provide the right edgebanding solution for all levels of manufacturing.” Even the bespoke craftsman can benefit from zero-joint technology at an affordable price. The Brandt Ambition 1220 and 1230 airTec models are great entry level edgebanders. They offer a high degree of automation and come equipped with a joint trimming unit for an optimum edge joint quality, a contour trimming unit for optimum corner-rounding and a trimming unit with DFC tool technology for maximum dust extraction. For small- to medium-sized businesses, the Brandt Ambition 1440 airTec offers a higher degree of flexibility and can be optimised according to customers’ requirements. The basic model has a joint trimming unit, an exact gluing unit, an end trimming unit, a trimming unit and a twomotor corner rounding unit. It also offers lower energy costs with ecoPlus and is controlled with powerTouch using the 21.5in widescreen multitouch monitor. For larger manufacturers, Brandt offers high specification versions of the Ambition including the popular 1650 airTec model. The 1650 offers both airTec and Quickmelt gluing (EVA and PUR). In standard trim, the 1650 offers a variable feed speed

from 8-18m/min, with an option to increase feed rates up to 20m/min. As well as a heavy duty pre-milling unit for panels up to 60mm in thickness, a Quickmelt gluing unit and the airTec unit, the Ambition 1650 airTec boasts a two-motor end-snipping unit, top and bottom trimming units, a servo-controlled corner-rounding unit, profile and surface scraping units for the perfect finish. The Ambition 1650 FC provides versatile, high quality edgebanding on a consistent basis. Homag laserTec – the ultimate high speed edging technology Compared to conventional glue-based methods, Homag laserTec offers immense benefits. It simplifies the edging process enormously, eliminating unproductive waiting periods and setup work for colour changes. Separate settings for glue quantity and temperature are no longer required, nor are entries for different materials such as chipboard or MDF. In comparison to conventional hot-melt glue technology on throughfeed machines, laserTec delivers energy savings of over 40%, as there is no longer any heating-up period required, so no energy is used without productivity. This reduces CO2 emissions by up to 26 tons per annum and offers cost savings of up to £3380 per year. The consistently high standard of

processing quality substantially reduces the scrap volumes, delivering maximum production efficiency. Stronger bond with improved safety and environmental benefits Not only does laserTec produce an invisible surface-to-edge transition, but also the bond achieved between the edge and the panel is considerably stronger and more robust than with conventional techniques. What’s more, the workpieces, downstream processing units and the tools on the machine are far less susceptible to contamination than with conventional edgebanding adhesives. Glueless production is particularly environmentally friendly, as it eliminates glue fumes and prevents any risk of hot melt glue being burnt in the machine. In addition, Homag’s laserTec method has a class 1 laser safety rating, making it safe for use in any kind of furniture production. CNC processing centre with laserTec Completing its edgebanding options, Homag offers customers the choice of EVA, PUR and laserTec edging on a selection of CNC processing centres. This innovation means that all workpieces with shaped edgebanded edges can be produced with the same high quality and aesthetic standard as straight-edged components. Simon concludes: “The Homag Group offers a comprehensive range of edgebanding machinery for the UK market. From entry level models all the way through to high end volume production lines, there is really no question that we have a solution for every need. “Our extensive knowledge and experience in the edgebanding market combined with our ability to provide a choice of edge bonding techniques at any level of business – even offering multiple systems on the same machine – enables our customers to make an informed decision and to invest with confidence. “It’s quite simple, if you’re looking for consistently high edgebanding quality day-in, day-out, there is no better place to start than with Homag. And don’t forget, our experienced team at Homag UK is always on hand to provide answers to your questions or organise finance, if required.” To see a demonstration of any of the Homag Group edgebanding solutions, call Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. With the market trend toward and customer expectation for fine to zero glue lines, all Holz-Her edgebanders are capable of delivering a fine glue line as standard.

Award-winning visual zero glue system as standard with all Holz-Her edgebanders

Holz-Her Accura 1158 From the smallest edgebanders to the largest production solution, Holz-Her’s unique and award-winning Glu Jet system caters for every size and type of business. Winner of the 2014 IWF Atlanta Exhibition’s highly prestigious Challenger Award, Holz-Her’s Glu Jet glue application system proved its technical lead, where it was praised by the jury for its ultimate level of flexibility, quality and value as well as its superior customer advantages. The system had already received the Gold Star Award as the best system for processing PUR glues at the AWISA Fair in Australia. Holz-Her patented Glu Jet System – Invisible joints with thin film technology and a three year warranty From the Holz-Her Streamer 1053 at under £20,000 to the Accura range from over £100,000, all Holz-Her Edgebanders come with the same patented Holz-Her Glu Jet System as standard, delivering one-of-a-kind edging results with ultra-thin glue joints, near equivalent to industrial laser edges. The hybrid technology combined with Holz-Her thin film technology enables visual zero joints with PUR glue, perfect for wet areas

including bathrooms, student accommodation and kitchen environments. From high gloss through to solid wood edging, the system is both flexible and versatile. Such is its build quality and reliability, the Glu Jet system comes with a three year warranty as standard. This is industrial technology for all – you can now process PUR glue as standard, but without the hassle. As the benchmark for professional cabinet makers, most manufacturers would use PUR, but not all machinery can cope with the demands of the polymer reaction which forms such strong and thin waterproof, temperature tolerant bonds. PUR is difficult to manage with a standard glue pot and molecular cross-linking becomes a problem. With the Glu Jet ready to use in under four minutes with EVA or PUR, Holz-Her’s unique system is the right solution for any edgebanding requirements. Program selection allows the machine to be set up without even opening the hood, so it’s ready for production immediately. But it doesn’t stop there. With the new Holz-Her Lumina series comes an option for the LTronic system – a new laser edging unit from Holz-Her unbeatable in terms of speed and cost efficiency.

It’s ready to use as soon as you switch it on – there is no heat-up time or any heat-up phases during the machining process. In addition, the complete system operates absolutely silently which is a clear advantage for the user compared to other systems. Cleaning costs are minimal, with the integrated protective plate on the NIR module only needing to be briefly cleaned just once a week, the system is a pioneer in terms of energy efficiency. With the Holz-Her Lumina series, you can switch from glue to laser in minutes. Using the high precision HSK interface from Holz-Her’s CNC technology, at the push of a button and serial bus connectors, two dedicated carriages facilitate the sliding off and on of units. Changing from laser to PUR or EVA could not be easier, and Holz-Her’s solution was designed to ensure the gluing station is always as close as possible to the pressing station, eliminating the chance of glue shock and subsequent production problems. This simple change-over also enables any preventative maintenance or service to the system not in use with zero down time. The Lumina has an automatic unit recognition feature and is ready for use immediately after changing over to the LTronic. The change over time from edge to edge is under five minutes. In short, Holz-Her offers choice without compromise. T 01235 557600 E sales-uk@weinig.com W holzher.co.uk

FP268_pages.2.indd 42

The current trend for copper has already indicated that metallic colours such as gold, copper and bronze are going to spread a touch of luxury in the living rooms in 2016. These colours create magnificent accents in otherwise rather cautious and simple rooms with less but hiqh-quality furniture and discreet wall design. The new Ostermann ABS edgings with a solid aluminium finish are available in 1mm thickness and in copper, champagne, gold and bronze brushed surfaces. Furthermore the edgings are stocked in all widths up to 100mm and are delivered by Ostermann within 24 hours. Since these new edgings are conventional ABS edgings which have only been enhanced by a particularly attractive metal finish, they can be applied

or processed much easier than solid metal edgings. The new ABS edgings from Ostermann can be perfectly used for the new luxury living trends of 2016: Thus, customers who prefer an extensive metallic appearance, are able to build complete wall elements – for instance a mantel shelf or panel for a TV wall. For customers who prefer to be less spectacular, several metal edgings provide a touch of luxury on shelves and table tops. In combination with white, grey, brown or black furniture, as well as discreet wall designs, the enhanced furniture elements can be shown to their fullest advantage. For everyone who loves real wood surfaces, the veneer edging is still the first choice among all edging materials. Luckily Ostermann provides a wide range with over 100 different veneer edgings. Of course there will not only be matching edgings to the Kaindl’s current wood veneers collection, but also the new wood veneer end-grain edging: European Oak.

High quality and beautiful: the Ostermann diversity in veneer edgings

Beautiful diversity: Ostermann supplies over 100 different veneer edgings

Veneer surfaces are currently experiencing a small renaissance. More and more frequently, rooms, decorated with elaborate veneer surfaces are being created. Even lamp manufacturers have recently started to work with back-lit veneers. Furthermore the current living trend, new cosiness, certainly contributes to the fact that real wood surfaces are increasingly attracting interest. Certainly it is highly convenient that Ostermann provides a wide range of attractive designs also for this traditional edging material. This includes, for example, the complete collection of veneer edgings matching the Kaindl Boards collection 2015. Here the highlight is the new so-called stonewashed design, which combines the conventional wood material with a new and modern used look. Recently, the Ostermann range has grown by the new and particularly attractive wood veneer end-grain edging, European Oak. Wood veneer end-grain elements in different widths ensure a lively, yet natural look. Furthermore a fine-line underlay provides sufficient stability and flexibility in processing edgings of 1.2mm thickness. The new end-grain edging has the part number 073.4200 and is available in the widths 24, 33 and 43mm from roll (50m), delivered within 24 hours. It is advisable to always store the end-grain edgings in a sealed plastic bag to protect them from rapid drying out. Further processing through pickling, oiling or painting is possible without any problems. Ostermann supplies a wide range of wood surfaces corrections for claims handling. As for all real wood edgings, the glue application should be approximately 200-300g/m². T 01905 793550 E sales.uk@ostermann.eu W ostermann.eu

High class furniture and interior design company, Halstock, designs, manufactures and installs luxury bespoke interiors. In everything it does, only the best is deemed appropriate – and in this article, it’s about the sanding capability as provided by Kündig.

A Brilliant solution for when only the best will do

Working with architects, interior designers, project managers, quantity surveyors and private clients, Halstock demands the best in all that it does. The combination of the team’s knowledge and experience delivers unique and imaginative solutions, often exceeding expectations. The type of work covered includes bathrooms; doors and panelling; dressing rooms; free standing furniture; gun rooms; kitchens; intricate boxes described on the website as Little Halstock; media rooms; studies and libraries; and wine cellars. The team of 50 includes a dedicated veneering team as well as 12 cabinet makers and a dedicated installation team. In order to help maintain the highest standards, Halstock purchased a Kündig Brilliant-2 1350 REd sander in 2010, which is still giving excellent service today. “We had an existing Kündig Enorm-Primo sander we had purchased about 15 years ago, which we needed to upgrade,” explains production director Jasper Heinrich. “The old sander is still perfectly useable, and in fact is still

in use today: but it only had a single head, while the Kündig Brilliant sander is fitted with two, so we can do two processes in one go, thus achieving a better finish but also productivity improvements. “The new Kündig technology also means less sand-throughs, when veneer gets sanded too thin: the new sander eradicates this problem with segmented pad sanding.” Halstock has also purchased a Kündig edge sander, bringing the number of Kündig sanders it owns at time of writing to three. While researching his choice of sander in 2010, Jasper visited a number of different manufacturers, including Kündig. As part of his research, he was taken by Carl O’Meara of Kündig Ltd to the visit the company’s head office in Switzerland, where Kündig has possibly the largest display of wide belt sanding machines on display, all running for demonstration purposes and of different specifications, so any trials can be made from solid wood sanding through to high gloss. The visit left Jasper enthusiastic about the Kündig range: “They are the absolutely premium brand on the market. All they do is sanders. By visiting the factory in Switzerland you know you are dealing with a quality brand: the way they work, the way they assemble, the way they communicate convinced me I am dealing with a class leader.” And Jasper is equally as enthusiastic about the service he has received from Carl O’Meara: “The way Carl is set up is particularly good for machinery. He has a great knowledge and he was never pushy. He gave us information, took us to Switzerland, and allowed us the space to make up our own minds. We had a few teething problems that were down to a lack of knowledge on our part rather than any problem with the machine: and Carl was always on the phone to assist us.” The sander selected by Halstock was specified to cater for both solid wood and veneer sanding requirements. It has a dedicated calibration roller followed by a segmental pad which can be placed at a 10° angle to offer a ‘shear cut’ across the surface: the well-known oblique sanding feature. The machine was also fitted with the optional infeed and outfeed tables along with variable speed control to the second head, to allow higher grade abrasives to be used. All flat panelled and timber sections used by Halstock in its manufacturing pass through the Kündig sander, which is used particularly for calibration of boards pre veneering, for the sanding of solid components and for the denibbing of polyester finishes. Senior cabinet maker, David Higgins, believes that the oblique sanding option is a real benefit, particularly when high gloss polyester coatings are being processed, with even sticky polyester belt-clogging being greatly reduced by the oblique sanding head. “You get an outstandingly even and smooth surface with oblique sanding,” he says. When asked if he would recommend Kündig, Jasper replied: “Yes, and very highly. The next machinery upgrade here will probably be the bringing in of another Kündig machine. A sander other than another Kündig will not enter the equation.” T 0845 833 0565 E sales@kundig.co.uk W kundig.co.uk

Wagner MDF powder coating system delivers greater efficiency and higher quality for kitchen door company

Kempa: coating kitchen doors in half the time Custom-made at standard prices is the motto of Kempa Keukendeuren, a company which manufactures individual kitchen cabinet doors and kitchen furniture in the Herentals, in the Flanders region of Belgium. “We don’t have mass production or any warehouse, each order is tailor-made for the customer,” explains Kempa marketing manager Filip Laureyssen. “However, as we still want our products to be affordable, we take advantage of every opportunity to increase our efficiency. Under no circumstances will our high quality be compromised in the process.” With this in mind, Kempa decided not to liquidcoat some of its MDF boards in future, but rather to use a Wagner powder coating system. Customer demand meets efficient production Two influencing factors came together here. Firstly, the customers – who mostly come from Belgium and the Netherlands – increasingly asked for powder-coated MDF boards, because they are usually cheaper and more durable. “You need to understand that the powder coating of MDF is significantly more widespread in Belgium than it is in Germany,” explains Filip Laureyssen. “From our point of view, the technology has only just reached a level of sophistication where we wanted to use it.” Wagner developed a new procedure for coating MDF boards, which has been on offer since 2014. The technical centerpiece is units that are capable of achieving flawless electrostatic powder coating thanks to an innovative new charge distribution. The challenge when powder-coating MDF boards is to electrostatically charge the wood. For this purpose, Wagner has developed special units which enable optimal powder coating on standard MDF boards by means of an innovative new charge distribution – as used by kitchen cabinet door manufacturer Kempa in Herentals, Belgium. Secondly, Kempa wanted to make production more efficient and, above all, save working time. “Using the new system, two employees create several kitchens each day. Powder coating is more than twice as fast as liquid coating and we can immediately further process the workpieces without any drying time,” says Filip. The procedure improves quality at the same time: in just a single work step, a coat is applied that is not only cheaper, but also more resistant and durable.

FP268_pages.2.indd 48

New PXM powder center in use Following thorough consultation with Alexander Buchmüller, business development and sales manager (MDF) at Wagner, Kempa opted for a Wagner plastic booth in conjunction with field controller technology, ten PEA XL C4 automatic guns and the PXM powder center. “We had only brought the powder centre onto the market shortly before Kempa placed their order,” recalls Alexander. “It was perfect for the task, as it guarantees optimal powder supply both from a powder container and directly from the box.” The system was installed in Herentals in February 2015 and has been in daily operation since May 2015. Five of Wagner’s automatic PEA XL C4 guns are mounted on each of two reciprocators and thes provide a seamless powder coating inside a plastic booth. Wagner says this is not only cheaper, but also more hardwearing and durable than liquid coating. Now that the initial phase is largely completed, Kempa is pleased with the outcome so far: “We are very satisfied with the service provided by Wagner. We would buy the system again without reservation”, says Filip. “We have achieved our objectives: higher quality with considerably less effort. At the same time we can produce more,

and our staff’s capacity is freed up, so they can be more efficient. Almost no complaints, as well as cheaper and faster production – what more can you want?” Filip concludes saying that Kempa’s customers are also satisfied with the new surface finish. W wagner-group.com

The latest version of Lectra’s marker-making solution dedicated to the furniture industry saves manufacturers thousands in fabric costs per year.

Lectra releases DiaminoFurniture V6R2

Lectra, a world leader in integrated technology solutions dedicated to industries using soft materials – fabrics, leather, technical textiles and composite materials – has released DiaminoFurniture V6R2, the latest version of its markermaking solution for upholstered furniture. This new release expands the scope of automated markermaking capabilities, accelerating the product development process, delivering higher quality finished products and maximizing material saving in the cutting room. Today, consumers demand furniture that reflects their lifestyle. They want sophisticated pieces in an infinite variety of colours and fabrics, with ever-shorter lead times. Manufacturers must therefore constantly renew their offer, making

FP268_pages.2.indd 50

it difficult to remain profitable and competitive, as they have to create and manage a greater number of increasingly complex markers to fulfil orders on time and on budget. DiaminoFurniture is a key element of Lectra’s end-to-end furniture offer, using automation to accelerate the pre-production process, and removing time-consuming, repetitive manual tasks. For manufacturers, the situation is further complicated by rising fabric costs, driving them to find less costly alternatives to protect margins and maintain competitiveness. Cheaper materials are more likely to contain flaws, such as differences in shading for plain fabrics and variations in pattern repeats, increasing waste and reducing profitability. “This growing demand for broader choice and more frequently

renewed models puts upholstered furniture manufacturers under enormous pressure. They have to find new ways to get their products to market faster and reduce costs,” says Céline Choussy Bedouet, chief marketing officer, Lectra. “Because fabric accounts for up to 40% of furniture’s cost price, efficient marker-making, which optimises material use, gives a real competitive advantage,” explains Céline. This latest version of DiaminoFurniture delivers additional fabric savings of 1.1% compared to previous versions, which already used cutting-edge technology. For example, in the case of a Lectra customer using 350,000m of fabric a year with a purchase price of €30 per meter, the saving obtained through optimised marker-making would amount to €115,500 annually.

DiaminoFurniture’s powerful algorithm simulates multiple marker options, extracting the maximum from each fabric roll. Marker simulations can be run in batches, in hidden time or even overnight for improved efficiency. The solution can also give accurate cost estimates very early in the product development process, ensuring that all proposed models meet cost targets. This accelerates product development and keeps the need for expensive physical prototypes to a minimum, generating significant savings as each physical prototype can cost up to five times as much as the finished model itself. Quality is enhanced as fabric flaws, shade and pattern repeat variations are now taken into account automatically, reducing costs and saving time in the cutting room. W lectra.com

Perfect 2D wrapping Barberan has developed a process for filling and smoothing irregular edges. A perfect finish with thin paper foil is possible today with the Barberan MS 25 system placed in line with the wrapping or postforming machine. The new system applies filler on irregular board edges, expanding the wrapping possibilities and obtaining a perfect finish even when thin foils are used. The MS 25 filling/smoothing system has been designed to be placed in line with existing or new wrapping or laminating/postforming machines. The process starts with an accurate surface cleaning before the hotmelt filling product is applied and smoothed on the edges in order to obtain an edge surface as flat and smooth as the board’s surface. After this treatment, the board is ready to be wrapped with thin foil types. More perfection is achieved when the edges are smoothed, even after wrapping at the line’s outfeed. W barberan.com

Latest furniture industry statistics reveal manufacturing growth According to the latest industry statistics released by the Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA), the UK’s furniture manufacturing sector has recorded a provisional turnover in 2014 of £7.4b – up more than 6% than 2013 and over 14% higher than in 2011. This performance can only be seen as positive, especially when the decline in the number of furniture manufacturers over that time is taken into consideration.

Published annually by the FIRA, it contains facts and figures specific to the furniture and furnishings industry and is compiled using the latest available data for 2014 sourced from a range of websites. Provisional figures for 2015 will not be released by the Government until the latter half of 2016. Author of the publication and technical services manager for FIRA International – which carried out the research on behalf of the association – says: “The turnover for furniture manufacturing in 2014 was 1.4% of the total for UK manufacturing and the furniture sector employed 2.9% of all UK manufacturing personnel (71,000). “Notably, kitchen furniture manufacturing turnover improved to a greater extent than any other subsector in 2014. After a couple of years of comparatively poor performance the corner appears to have been turned, with a 22% increase on the previous year. In 2014, mattress manufacturing turnover also increased during the same time frame by 7.1%.” The digest further segments the furniture and furnishings sector and evidences that the negative worldwide trade gap has continued to widen, with increases in imports outstripping any small increases in exports. Dr Beele continues: “Import and export data continue to portray worrying trends, resulting in an ever widening trade gap, but this is compensated for by the improvement in fortunes of many UK manufacturers and an increasing demand from consumers for furniture and furnishings. As

Dr Peter Beele, author of the Statistics Digest the industry continues its recovery, the digest provides a valuable insight into the performance and potential trends for the industry.” The Statistics Digest is available free of charge to FIRA members or it can be purchased by nonmembers for £300 + VAT. Yorkshire-based Stage One Creative Services excels in the field of creative set design, construction, manufacturing and engineering. It constructed the famous Cauldron for the Olympic Flame at the 2012 London Olympics, and was recently main contractor for The UK Pavilion at the Milan Expo 2015 which won the Gold Award for Architecture and Landscape.

DCS performs at Stage One

The beehive-inspired structure, manufactured and constructed by Stage One, at Milan 2015 Expo

The company operates from three huge wartime aircraft hangers on an 8000m2 site located between York and Wetherby in the village of Tockwith, where it employs 110 people. Stage One delivers projects internationally, many of which require set manufacture and construction on an extremely large scale. An important part of the company’s manufacturing capability is its modern, wellequipped woodworking shop which has recently seen the installation of a new dust extraction system from Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS). When it was decided to invest in a new dust extraction system, Stage One had no hesitation in calling in DCS which has installed several extraction systems at the site, and have provided

on-going servicing for a number of years. Following a thorough evaluation of Stage One’s needs, DCS put forward a proposal centred around a compact yet powerful filter system to be mounted on steelwork outside the wood shop. The new extraction system was sized on a duty of 14,000m3 per hour, and comprises a high-efficiency NFSZ modular filter unit, fitted with high-performance Superbag polyester filter bags, and features pressure-free discharge of waste, via a rotary valve, into a bulk bag. The installation also incorporates safety systems designed to protect the extraction system against the dangers of explosion and/or fire. A BS&B spark detection and extinguishing system comprises a detection zone within the ductwork which triggers a fast-acting water

extinguisher if a spark is detected. Furthermore, the main ducting system incorporates an ATEXapproved CARZ back-pressure flap valve which prevents the effects of a dust explosion from travelling from the filter, back along ductwork, and into the workshop. Nick O’Brien, wood shop supervisor at Stage One, says: “As always, we were pleased with the level of service provided by DCS and the net result is that we now have an extremely safe and efficient system which provides us with a comfortable dust-free working environment.” T 0800 040 7116 W DCSlimited.co.uk

A bespoke rocking chair gets the Osmo treatment The demand for handmade furnishings continues to remain high across the country. With each product created by dedicated and skilled craftspeople, the hours of hard work that goes into each item results in a unique and lasting product that imported products can rarely compete with.

FP268_pages.2.indd 60

Steve Slack, the owner of Wood Charm, started woodworking as a hobby but has now honed his skills enough to turn it into his profession, creating beautiful bespoke products. One of his more recent projects was a handcrafted rocking chair, and due to the importance of prolonging its fine detail and look, Steve elected to finish the product with Osmo’s Wood Protector Oil and Polyx-Oil Rapid. “I have been using Osmo wood finishes for the last few years,” explains Steve. “The products allow the wood to breathe and don’t alter the colour of the timber – two important features in my eyes. Another reason why I enjoy working with Osmo finishes is they are very quick and easy to apply. For this project, I wiped the finish on with a cloth, waited five minutes, and then wiped off the excess.” When finishing the chair, Steve applied two coats of Osmo Wood Protector, a unique preservative wood primer, and then applied PolyxOil Rapid. Osmo’s Polyx-Oil Rapid is a premium wood finish guaranteed to keep wooden surfaces in top condition. As the name suggests, this product offers rapid drying times. Ideal as a durable finish for furniture, it is a high quality, water-repellent wood finish, based on natural ingredients. Available in matt, clear and satin-matt finishes, the Polyx-Oil Rapid range offers the highest coverage of any oil on the market – a 2.5 litre can covers approximately 30m² with two coats. As well as being suitable for furniture, Polyx-Oil

Rapid is also suitable for use on all wooden floors and can be used on cork floors and for terracotta and other unglazed tiles. It is also well suited for the treatment of internal joinery. Polyx-Oil Rapid has a clear, quick drying, durable finish, is water repellent and extremely tough and hard-wearing. T 01296 481220 W osmouk.com

Registered charity, The Sylva Foundation, has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology, for its new Wood Centre in the heart of Oxfordshire.

Wood Waste Technology heater installed in new Wood Centre The Sylva Foundation is a charity which works across Britain caring for forests, to ensure they thrive for people and for nature. Having been gifted 20 acres of land and several large farm buildings a few years ago, the charity has used this to develop a centre for innovation in home-grown wood, to provide an enterprise hub for new and innovative wood-using businesses. The charity knew it wanted to install a flexible biomass heating solution into the centre. An old 12,000ft2 potato store had been redesigned and rebuilt to support a number of separate small- to medium-size enterprise wood-using businesses, as well as a teaching classroom. The team didn’t want anything too complex in there, as their main aim was to supply tenants of the Wood Centre with warm workshops that would be costeffective to run by being fuelled with waste wood and wood offcuts. A number of possible solutions was evaluated, but the team eventually purchased a WT15 heater from Wood Waste Technology, which was installed by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers.

FP268_pages.2.indd 62

Paul Orsi, director for forestry and rural enterprise at Sylva, explains: “Wood Waste Technology gave us the perfect solution to our heating problem. We were struggling to find something that fitted our budget and was easy to use, but that would provide a comfortable environment for our tenants. It was also extremely important to us that it could be run on wood waste. We’re delighted with our purchase and the service we’ve received. It’s been a completely smooth process, from purchase to installation. “Whilst the wood waste heater is situated in a central area, the engineers were able to duct the hot air to provide heat into each of the tenant’s individual workshops. The tenants love that it provides them with free heating and reduces their waste disposal bills.” Paul continues: “Our wider vision for the Sylva Wood Centre is to develop the whole site – which includes several more buildings and the surrounding landscape. We wouldn’t hesitate in contacting Wood Waste Technology again should we have any further biomass heating needs.”

MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft, says: “We’ve been delighted to be involved in such an exciting and innovative project, and look forward to seeing how the developments at the wood centre continue.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and claims to supply genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various sizes and specifications to suit all business applications. A West Yorkshire leather manufacturer has seen a substantial upturn in orders and has invested in new machinery to meet increasing customer demand, with support from Yorkshire Bank.

Yorkshire leather manufacturer gains the cutting edge Leeds based Yarwood Leather is the first UK leather manufacturer to introduce the impressive Gerber Taurus II, a state-of-theart leather cutting machine used primarily for precision leather cutting in the aviation, automotive and retail furniture industries. The company received a funding package from Yorkshire Bank to help cover the cost of the new machine and the package was delivered by Jonathan Russell, relationship manager at the Bank’s business and private banking centre in Leeds. As a result of the investment, Yarwood has also taken on additional staff to operate the Gerber Taurus, which requires three experts to mark, cut and finish the leather before this goes onto the sewing team. The new machine will help service new clients, including one of the UK’s biggest furniture retailers which recently signed a contract with the firm. The investment comes as the UK begins to see a return in custom from businesses used to outsourcing part of the process to the Far East. With supply chain problems and a narrowing of price differences, companies are reverting to British leather manufacturers, such as Yarwood Leather which can guarantee quality and efficiency. As one of Europe’s largest stock-holders of leather, and with the capacity to offer clients a full service – from manufacturing through to sewing – the firm is ideally placed to take on new contracts. Established in 1967, Yarwood Leather is a specialist in leather processing as well as a stockist and distributor for a variety of industries. In recent years it has gone from strength to strength, and has taken on an additional 10 staff in the last 12 months alone. Now operating with a team of 40, Yarwood’s managing director, Nick Batty, has ambitious growth plans for the firm. Nick says: “Yarwood Leather has experienced impressive growth in the past few years and we expect this to continue, particularly in the aviation and upholstery sectors. Our new leather cutting machine is the latest of its kind and will operate in tandem with our other machines, helping to fulfil a growing order book for customers across industries.

John Edwards, Yarwood Leather; Jonathan Russell, Yorkshire Bank; Nick Batty, Yarwood Leather “We have a very positive relationship with our manager, Jonathan Russell, who is always keen to listen to our ideas, helping us to implement our growing ambitions for the company by providing a range of Yorkshire Bank facilities to support our changing needs as we take the business forward.” David Maybury, head of Yorkshire Bank’s Leeds business and private banking centre, says: “Yarwood Leather is a great example of a local, thriving business being sought out thanks to their specialist expertise. Their investment is a testament to the ambitious nature of the company which has helped them position themselves as Europe’s biggest leather stockist. We’re proud to have been able to support them along the way and look forward to seeing them grow. “As economic conditions continue to improve,

Yorkshire Bank remains focused on supporting the growth ambitions of businesses across Yorkshire.” Yorkshire Bank recently launched a series of lending initiatives for UK businesses, designed to encourage growth for new and existing customers. As well as capital-free periods for up to five years, the bank has also introduced high percentage funding for businesses to purchase trading premises. Yorkshire Bank has also strengthened its support for UK SMEs by becoming the first to partner with the British Business Bank under its ENABLE Guarantees scheme. Up to £125m of new lending by Yorkshire Bank will help more small businesses achieve their growth ambitions. W ybonline.co.uk W yarwoodleather.com W gerbertechnology.com
