April 2016 #270 News / Events Dust Extraction Installations / Updates New products / Trade services
www.furnitureproduction.net
It’s good to see that 2016 has finally kicked into gear for the furniture and joinery industry – it seemed a rather prolonged hibernation this year, but, with an early Easter, and good weather, I feel there’s a spring in our collective step once more. Although there are more to come in the next month or so, over the last few weeks the traditional round of open house events have got under way, with positive reports from Biesse recently and Daltons Wadkin and Homag this month. We also take a look forward to Felder’s open house, taking place in mid-April, as well as the Leitz Tooling timber windows seminar in Leeds on the 20th. All this activity serves to underline the efforts companies are going to in order to serve their customers, and we should definitely attend and take advantage of that allimportant one-to-one time offered by these companies. Looking forward to later this year, we are already counting down the months before the industry’s biggest meeting point, the W16 and Elements event, taking place at the NEC, Birmingham in October. At Furniture & Joinery Production, our plans are well under way, and many of the industry’s key players have committed to exhibiting their latest products and services. All being well, we should have a couple of important announcements to tell readers and advertisers next month regarding our evolving relationship with the show organiser, Montgomery. Congratulations, by the way, to the organiser’s Lisa Campagnola, who has been promoted to event director, recognising her sterling work thus far.

I urge all those who are considering attending the event to begin looking for lodgings today, as we found it difficult to book into our normal abode this time around. And, for potential exhibitors, if you haven’t already spoken with Lisa, I recommend doing so before the last of the the better positions are taken by your competitors! Regarding this issue, we have installations at companies such as Starbank, Neville Johnson, Astabridge, Haynes Guitars, Westbridge and B2B Exhibitions, among others. Add to that a host of new products, event reports and previews, news and trade services, plus much more on our class-leading website, and it amounts to a veritable feast for the those looking to ‘gen-up’ on the latest techniques and supplies.

Biesse’s star continues to rise with sales and profits up Biesse, one of world’s biggest woodworking machinery manufacturers, achieved sales of €519.1m in 2015, a growth of 21.5% from 2014. EBITDA in 2015 reached €64.1m compared to €40.9m in 2014 – an increase of 52.9%. Established in Pesaro in 1969 by Giancarlo Selci, Biesse SpA has been listed on the STAR sector of Borsa Italiana since June 2001. As a result of the company’s focus on research and innovation, Biesse can develop modular products and solutions capable of responding to a vast range of requirements from clients. The success of 2015 has been achieved against the grain somewhat, compared to some other large firms in this sector. The increase in sales has allowed the Italian company to grow its pre-tax profits by 69% to €38.5m which shows a improved margin on revenues of 7.4%. Importantly, as of the end of 2015, the Biesse Group is in a positive cash position compared to a €19.1m deficit in 2014. In geographical/divisional terms, the
breakdown of revenues was: • Western Europe 40.1% (39.6% in 2014) – of which Italy 12.4% (10.4% in 2014)- with a year-onyear increase in volumes of 23.0% • Eastern Europe 17.0% (19.7% in 2014) with a year-on-year increase in volumes of 5,3% • North America 17.5% (14.0% in 2014) with a year-on-year increase in volumes of 51.9% • Asia Pacific 19.7% (19.9% in 2014) with a year-on-year increase in volumes of 20.2% • Rest of the World 5.6% (6.8% in 2014) with a year-on-year increase in volumes of 0.9% On the basis of the results achieved it would be fair to say that in 2015 Biesse has significantly outperformed the indications given for its core sectors, both in terms of order intake and in terms of growth in its production order book. Total order intake for the Biesse Group in 2015 was 17.8% higher than in 2014, while the order book totalled more than €141m at end-2015, up 21.5% compared to 2014. biesse.co.uk
PIABC approval for Daltons Wadkin training
PWS’ Northern Star
Woodworking machine operator training, which forms a significant part of the services provided to the industry by Daltons Wadkin, is now backed by respected quality assurance assessor PIABC. Daltons Wadkin was approved as a quality assured centre for woodworking machine operator training last December. Francis Dalton comments: “We are delighted to have received PIABC approval for our operator training in recognition of the hard work and dedication put in by our training team. “Working initially with experienced training provider John Gubb, our company provides a most comprehensive training service on a daily basis to organisations throughout the UK and Ireland, ranging from public authorities and highend joinery and furniture manufacturing companies through to the smallest of workshops and individual operators. PIABC approval is the icing on the cake and gives us further impetus to drive our training services onwards and upwards.” Daltons Wadkin sales director, Andy Walsh, adds: “This approval confirms our position as one of the leading woodworking machine operator trainers in the UK and it doesn’t stop here. We have our own specialised trainers, ie The Red Team, and will have no hesitation in taking on additional trainers as work demands. “We have training materials that are second to none and incorporate health and safety information and advice in everything we do including the provision of risk assessments as required.” 0115 986 5201 daltonswadkin.com

PWS has promoted Paul Dorrington to northern regional sales manager. Paul takes on this new position
following two and a half years in the role as area sales manager for the north west area. As a graduate in product design and technology, Paul’s design skills, and appreciation of the product development process, complement his widespread experience in kitchen sales over the last decade. PWS sales director, David MacArthur, comments: “I am thrilled to welcome Paul to the sales management team at
PWS, joining Marina Gibbons who was promoted to southern regional sales manager in 2015. Paul’s appointment is the third internal promotion from within the PWS sales department and is a clear signal, that as a business, we are keen to promote from within, making our business stronger as a consequence. “With Paul’s extensive sales and design knowledge he is perfectly placed to develop and manage sales in the Northern region.”
National Apprenticeship Week 2016 rises to the top
SATRA launches new cushion test protocol
Over 30,000 new apprenticeships have been pledged by employers as part of National Apprenticeship Week 2016, over 7000 more than in 2015. From Greene King committing to hiring 10,000 apprentices (up from 2000 in 2015), Microsoft and partners announcing plans to recruit 4500, BT pledging 1000, Deloitte 200 and Kwik Fit 150, pledges have been made by hundreds of businesses around the country. Other companies that have pledged new apprenticeships include BMW, Addleshaw Goddard LLP, Fortnum & Mason, Virgin Media, British Airways, Prezzo, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
The new test protocol, SATRA TP28, was launched to test large sofa cushions for hardness and fatigue performance. Created in response to requests from customers who wished to assess both the initial hardness of their whole sofa cushions and how the hardness of the product is affected by extended use. The SATRA TP28 test protocol is based on two European standards, BS EN 1957:2012 and BS EN 12520:2015. The initial hardness of the product is measured by compressing the sofa cushion under a computer controlled loading pad that measures the load versus indentation characteristic.

Dreamland support MakeIT! Students in Kent
At this year’s Milan Design Week, the American Hardwood Export Council will be collaborating with sculptor Laura Ellen Bacon and furniture designer/maker Sebastian Cox as part of the Interni Open Boarders exhibition at the Porticato Largo Richini at University Estatale of Milan, 11-23 April. In an evolution of a project created for Clerkenwell Design Week 2015, Along the Lines of Happiness will be presented in Italy for the first time and will evolve on site into a very expressive form. Bacon and Cox will adapt the installation in a live performance, challenging the properties of some exceptional but under-utilised US hardwoods.
Students from Chatham & Clarendon Grammar School in Ramsgate, Kent are taking the Proskills’ Schools into Industry programme, MakeIT!, to a whole new level. They are creating designs in partnership with recently renovated local heritage theme park Dreamland in Margate, Kent. The development officer for the park has set the student themes which need to be covered. The students have created new project specifications for both MakeIT! Wood and MakeIT! Furniture and these are now being put to the test. This new industrial partnership is the brain child of long time MakeIT! supporter Tom Brewin.

Homag UK’s May Open House spotlights the latest advances in CNC machinery A wide range of entry level and volume-producing CNC machinery will be amongst a host of technologically advanced equipment demonstrated by Homag UK at its two day Open House, running on May 11-12th at its Castle Donington showroom.
Visitors to HOMAG UK’s Open House will be able to see all of the Group’s latest CNC technology
A wide range of machinery will be demonstrated and product specialists will be available throughout to discuss and advise visitors. The equipment on show will vary from affordable entry level models to higher end products. Software experts will also be presenting the user-friendly systems including the latest versions of woodCAD/CAM, woodWOP plus software for nesting and solid wood processing. These easy to use programs improve both production performance and the manufacturing efficiency. “CNC machinery and technology have advanced hugely over recent years, which is fantastic news for our customers as they can now invest in Homag machines more cost effectively,” claims Simon
FP270_pages.5.indd 8
Brooks, sales and marketing director for Homag UK. He continues: “We’ve worked hard to ensure that our machines stay at the top of the table in terms of both quality and technology. Our first Open House of the year is an exciting platform to showcase the advances we have made with our CNC machines. This equipment significantly increases productivity and is testament to our continual pursuit to develop the very latest technology.” Live demonstrations At the Open House there will be demonstrations of a variety of machines, ranging from the bestselling compact Weeke BHX 050 machining centre to the higher end specification Weeke Vantage 100/710 nesting router. With over 3000 sold, the Weeke
BHX 050 is one of the most popular drilling and routing CNCs in the UK market. It can process panels as small as 200 x 70 x 12mm up to panels sized 2500 x 850 x 60mm. However, there is also an option to increase this working length to 3050mm. The Weeke BHX 055 is the 050’s big brother and will also be demonstrated at the Open House. It was the success of the BHX 050 that prompted Weeke to develop a higher specified version, the BHX 055. This powerhouse has all the benefits of the original 050 but includes automatic adjustment of workpiece thickness, a maximum working length up to 3050mm and 13 vertical spindles as standard. The Weeke BHX 200 marks the next generation of powerful CNC drilling and routing machinery. It boasts considerably faster
machining speeds than the 50 or the 55, yet still maintains the same high levels of precision, despite its small size. The machine can be equipped with two individually movable high-speed drilling heads which activate a total of 36 highspeed drilling spindles enabling, for example, rows of holes to be processed considerably faster. Two Weeke nesting machines will be demonstrated – the 100/710 and the 43M. The Weeke Vantage 43M is a gantry-style CNC machine which ensures the highest precision over the entire working width. It has a 10ft x 4ft matrix table with the gantry travelling at a vector speed X/Y of 80m/minute, making it very fast and efficient. This machine is perfect for nesting and general machining as it comes as standard with a powerful four axis controlled router head, an

Live demonstrations of the latest technology will be held including WEEKE’s nesting machines
impressive toolchanger capacity and a large drill block with vertical and horizontal drills, as well as an X and Y direction grooving saw. The Weeke Vantage 100/710 on display at the Open House is for jumbo sheet nesting. It is equipped with an infeed lift table, push off and table sweep system, and an outfeed conveyor belt to provide a fully automatic throughfeed nesting cell. It comes with a powerful 12hp (9kW) HSK routing spindle as standard (optionally upgradeable to 16hp [12kW]) and a vertical drill block with automatic toolchanger for fast, versatile and efficient conversion of raw boards into fully machined components. Another powerful Weeke workhorse being shown at the Open House is the ABD 260 drilling and dowel inserting machine. This machine can be used on its own or to complement the nesting models where horizontal drilling and dowelling is required. It delivers controlled and clearcut results through the use of a vibrating hopper, fed from the top of the machine. Controlled with Homag’s user-friendly woodWOP software, the ABD 260 can cope with one-off components as easily as high production runs. The machine drills, glues and inserts dowels horizontally at a rapid rate and can also drill vertically lending itself nicely to ‘knock down’ products. CNCs for solid wood processing The Weeke BMG 211/32/12/K four axis CNC processing centre is particularly impressive thanks to its high configuration. It is ideal for machining components such as doors, door frames, solid wood components and complex furniture parts. The machine comes with Homag’s tubeless vacuum clamping system as standard. This means workpieces can be securely
held with a mix of vacuum pods and clamps to cope with even the most complex components. Also, it is very easy to change from job to job with minimal downtime. Last but not least will be the Homag BMG 311/42/F/K. It is part of a range of heavy duty gantry processing centres which provides state-of-the-art CNC solutions for furniture, window, door and stair manufacturers. This fiveaxis machine has an impressive specification including Homag’s LED positioning system for fast, accurate adjustment of the vacuum pods and rails, a heavy duty five-axis router head and a large drill block for drilling vertically and horizontally. The BMG 311 will be producing various five-axis machined workpieces throughout the event demonstrating its complete versatility. With programming software now recognised as perhaps more important than the machine itself, Homag UK will be demonstrating its array of software systems for nesting, solid wood processing, furniture design and production. “If you’re considering investing in CNC technology, this Open House is a must,” enthuses Simon Brooks. He continues: “To enable customers to afford brand new equipment, our Homag Finance team will be available throughout the Open House to give advice on investment plans and provide solutions tailored to individual needs. Cash flow is crucial in order for a business to thrive, but there’s no reason to let it impede expansion plans,” concludes Brooks. To reserve a place at the Homag Open House over the 11th and 12th May, please call Adele Hunt on 01332 856424. info@Homag-uk.co.uk homag-uk.co.uk

More open house’success for Daltons Wadkin with attendance at all-time high The Daltons Wadkin open house exhibition in March proved to be an outstanding success. Visitor numbers were up and interest was high, particularly in the rapid performance and technically advanced equipment such as the Salvador crosscutting range and Kimla CNC routers. Some 25 machines were on display and available for demonstration throughout the period and although interest was perhaps greatest where the Kimla and Salvador machines were concerned there was also considerable activity around the Elcon vertical panel cutting range and the Altendorf sliding table panel saws as well as the newly-acquired Cehisa range of edgebanding machines. Also featured were a range of
FP270_pages.5.indd 10
Wadkin classical machines, Stenner ST100R band resaw and the all new, never before seen in the UK, Maggi Evolution 1000 CNC multi-spindle borer with router. Director Alex Dalton comments: “We have had success in recent years with open house exhibitions but nothing which quite compares with this one. The range of equipment on show was extensive and reflected the development of our product range and our highly successful advance into CNC and
other automatic machines such as the Salvador crosscutting systems. “Prospective clients came from far and wide, orders were taken during the show including a high specification Kimla CNC and we fully expect that many orders will result from the amount of interest and the significant enquiries we received during the show.” The recent event in Nottingham is the first instalment of what will prove to be a very busy exhibition year for Daltons Wadkin.
The company will be showing a Kimla CNC at the Sign and Digital UK show at the NEC, 19th-21st April, and of course the company will as usual have a wide range of equipment on show at the W16 exhibition, again at the NEC, 2nd-5th October, where particular emphasis will be placed on the highly successful Salvador crosscuts, the Kimla CNC range, Cehisa edgebanders and Elcon vertical panel saws. 0115 986 5201 daltonswadkin.com

Future-proof timber window production: Leitz Tooling ThermoTech Window System Leitz Tooling’s ThermoTech Window System enables any size joinery company to manufacture ‘A’ and ‘A+’ rated thermal storm-proof, flush casement and traditional wood windows.
Available with BFRC (British Fenestration Rating Council) energy-rated licences for over 70 different variations of timber window manufacture and with full and ongoing back-up and support from the company, Leitz ThermoTech Window System is considered by its customers as one of the fastest, easy to use, reassuring and profitable systems on the market. Leitz ThermoTech Window System is a complete, compliant and scalable system for the manufacture of high quality timber windows by large manufacturers and small sized joinery companies alike, opening up new markets and business opportunities and responding to demand from manufacturers as well as architects and contractors. Leitz customers using the system have found it a positive experience. TimberMaster based in Rugby says: “The fact that Leitz has already done the work with the BFRC for energyrated window licences was a key factor in our decision to buy their

tooling, and we’re winning most of the work we quote for.” T O’Malley Joinery from Lancashire says: “We make timber windows for contractors, developers, housing associations and home owners, and the tooling system from Leitz means we now make them quicker and easier than ever before.” Brian Maddox, sales manager for Leitz Tooling UK, the UK’s largest supplier of tooling to British industry, says: “We have removed the burden of design, tooling, set up and window simulation thermal testing for the energy performance rating; the only things we don’t do is actually performance test the window or make it. “Our ThermoTech Window System gives the opportunity for much wider high quality manufacture of A and A+ rated thermal performance wood windows.” Leitz’s ThermoTech Window System provides an all-in-one package solution which is scalable for the specific and changing needs

of individual businesses. The BFRCregistered simulator with Leitz, Richard Jacob, says: “The system supports every type of variation, to suit every type of manufacturer, with any type of specification, with flexibility. As a low cost, dedicated modular system, it is not only as accessible and as future-proof as we can make it, but includes all the support customers might need, including custom window design and the cost of simulation to BRFC regulations to get the approved energy ratings.” Leitz Tooling regularly runs seminars on the ThermoTech Window System across the UK, with the next taking place on 20th April at Leeds College of Building. This will include technical speakers from SCM, a leading producer of woodworking machinery who supports the college; the British Woodworking Federation (BWF), the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC), Accsys Technologies on Accoya Wood, Teknos Coatings, sealing profile specialists for windows and doors, Deventer Weather Seals, Coastal Joinery

Hardware, and software supplier to the bespoke joinery market, Joinerysoft. During the seminars, timber window frames are machined on site in a matter of minutes, demonstrating how fast, accurate and easily repeatable production is with the Leitz system. Customers are even turning to the Leitz ThermoTech Window System after buying alternative products, with one customer saying: “I’ve tried the cheap systems, but now I have the Leitz system and the difference in production performance and finished product is incredible. We’re not just making windows, we are making money!” Mr Maddox said, “If we say it works, it works. If it doesn’t, it’s our problem, not the customers. That’s the difference. That’s where the back-up and support comes in from an organisation like Leitz.” Are you Part Q? The new Part Q of the building regulations for England introduced the requirement for security-rated doors and windows to be provided
for new build homes registered in England after 1st October 2015. The impact of Part Q Security Regulations on those supplying product into new homes is huge – any range of windows and nonbespoke external doors, including flat entrances, sold into the new build market will need to be backed by security testing. Evidence can be cascaded from an ironmongery manufacturer, for example, but it is vital to ensure that the scope covers the product you are supplying – eg section sizes, glazing method/system, species, placement of ironmongery and

Leitz Tooling has worked with Coastal Joinery Hardware – one of the UK’s leading trade-only suppliers of timber window and door hardware solutions – for several years, and both companies have dedication to customer support at the heart of their business. Coastal has launched a new initiative to enable businesses in the trade to easily and effectively become fully Part Q compliant, offering cascade certificates for Leitz Tooling’s High Performance Flush Timber Windows, side and top hung. Loren Jenner, director at Coastal says: “In line with our dedicated approach to providing the trade with a combination of quality products and technical knowledge, our Part Q compliance initiative is something we feel will really benefit our customers supplying the new build housing market. “It was clear to us that Part Q, whilst beneficial from a security perspective, was set to cause major headaches for smaller manufacturers. We saw this issue as something we could really lend support with and make the whole process much simpler for those who didn’t want to face the rigours of getting their own products tested.” Simon Liddell, managing director of Leitz Tooling UK, says: “Leitz is committed to high quality product, innovation and providing valuable services to our customers, and this cooperation with Coastal Joinery Hardware for Part Q cascade certification is an example of that value in practice. In combination with Coastal’s specific hardware, we really are making energy rated, high performance, certified and compliant timber window manufacture easy for our customers.” Information on using the Part Q certification system is on the Leitz website. 01279 454530 leitz-tooling.co.uk

With changing customer requirements and therefore manufacturing capabilities, Neville Johnson needed a new sander which could cope well with solid wood and veneered elements as well as painted MDF. Kündig provided an advantageous solution for Neville Johnson.
Brilliant sanding solution for Neville Johnson For over 30 years, Neville Johnson has been designing and creating bespoke interiors for discerning clients. Ranging from home studies to bedrooms to lounges to libraries to home cinema to staircases, whatever the customer wants, Neville Johnson can design it. A wide range of previous projects is illustrated on the company’s website: combined with the latest brochure and the skill of the company’s designers, these provide a high quality reference point for work on new commissions. Always keen to maintain the highest quality, Neville Johnson recently invested in a Kündig Brilliant sander. “The product that we work with now had changed greatly since we bought our original sander,” Neville Johnson’s Dave Pearson explains: “We had had our previous sander for nine years and, at the time we bought it, it did what we needed it to do: at that time we had been working a lot with veneers, particularly oak veneers and more solid timber doors, but the veneers

The oblique sanding system minimising scratching have dropped off quite a bit in our market and MDF has become more prevalent. “The previous sander was not able to work with painted MDF: the Kündig system can work both with the MDF and the solid wood. And the oblique sanding system results in a much better finish on the solid timber doors than the previous sander ever did.” The sander puchased by Neville Johnson was a Kündig Brilliant-3 1350 RedBk system, with the first contact roller for calibration, the second segmental pad for veneers and the third carousel brush unit for sanding into a profiled or routed surface. “This combination allows the
sander to produce excellent results on the painted MDF, the solid timber doors and the raised and fielded panels in MDF: in other words, on the full range of products manufactured by Neville Johnson, from the most affordable product to the most expensive. Particularly helpful in this regard is the oblique sanding system, which Dave Pearson credits with minimising scratching for example on the cross rails on solid timber doors. This effect is achieved by setting the last sanding head at a slightly different angle to the previous sanding head. While the manufacturer of the sanding belts will take every care to ensure that the belt is delivered

to the end user in the best possible condition, tiny flaws that develop over time can result in track lines, known as oscillation marks, being transferred to the workpiece during sanding, in much the same way that damaged rollers can lead to flawed printouts from photocopiers and fax machines. The resulting damage can be expensive both in time and materials, if new pieces need to be manufactured, especially where high-end products are being used. A sanded surface can, at a microscopic level, resemble a valley full of peaks and troughs. With oblique sanding, the second belt travels in a different direction to the first and is therefore a lot more effective in shearing off the peaks
and sanding evenly into the troughs, resulting in a better quality finish. Neville Johnson had investigated the market thoroughly before selecting the Kündig machine, and Dave Pearson described some of the reasons behind the decision: “They came over as a very good price: price was one of the main things we were looking at. It also did what we needed it to do. “The quality of the machine was also impressive. We sent samples out to the sander manufacturers, and the samples returned by Kündig were just as good or much better than those sanded on much more expensive machines.” The Kündig sander has brought a number of advantages to Neville Johnson – the ability to work on both MDF and solid wood being a key one, as well as the ability to work to very fine tolerances, and the minimising of scratching that the oblique sander brings. Dave continues: “It is also quite an easy machine to maintain compared to others we have had in the past. It isa easy to get to the parts and clean them, and easy to make adjustments. All in all, it is a very user friendly machine. It is also quite a speed machine, which is one of the main things we were looking for.” When asked if he would recommend it, Dave replied: “Definitely!” 0845 833 0565 kundig.co.uk

Dust extraction specialist Dust Control Systems (DCS) has recently completed a major installation at Starbank Panel Products’ new manufacturing facility at Newton-le-Willows on Merseyside.
DCS Extraction system for new Starbank facility
New generation Ecovar Validus filter extracts waste from all production machinery at Starbank, and woodwaste is delivered into a 16m tall storage silo After almost two years of planning and construction, Starbank Panel Products is now fully operational at its new 16acre site on the Sankey Valley Industrial Estate, just a short distance from the premises occupied by the company for the past 26 years. Starbank’s managing director, Phil Darbyshire, explains: “This move provides us with a platform to further grow the company and, just as importantly, ensures that the services we provide will meet our customers’ changing demands in the future. Since acquiring the site we have comprehensively redeveloped the existing 116,000ft2 building – doubling our manufacturing space, and allowing the opportunity for increased production capacity and flexibility.” Investment in production machinery for the new site includes the introduction of a second Homag BAZ 723 CNC processing centre, complete with bespoke

3D acrylic edgebanding facilities and automated loading gantry. The company has also installed a customised Homag VFL 610 through-feed postforming line which is configured for fabrication of wrapped fire doors and frames. For dust extraction at the new site, Starbank’s requirement was for a single, externally-sited, highefficiency filter that would serve the whole factory, as well as efficiently feeding woodwaste to a new stateof-the-art biomass heating system. Melvyn Bathgate, sales director at DCS, says: “Having worked with Phil and his team for many years we are aware of the company’s commitment to a green manufacturing strategy, and DCS were able to propose an energyefficient dust extraction scheme which featured an Ecogate energysaving extraction optimisation system, together with the latest Ecovar Validus filter from Schuko.” The Validus 2330 filter, sized at an air volume of 115,000m3/hr, extracts from a total of 16 machines. Waste collected by the filter is discharged, pressure-free, into a screw conveyor which feeds a bucket elevator. The waste material, via a second screw, is then discharged into a large storage silo. The new generation
Melvyn Bathgate and Phil Darbyshire at Starbank’s impressive new filter unit Schuko filter features a five 37kW fan cascade system whereby fans are brought on-line or taken off-line according to extraction demand. Cleaning cycles are also tailored to specific needs by employing a cleaning train regeneration system. Extraction ductwork throughout the new factory is designed to ensure optimum extraction
velocities, and pneumatic dampers strategically located in the ducting runs enable plastic waste and wood waste to be extracted separately. Furthermore, the ductwork between the fan outlet and filter inlet incorporates ATEX-approved CARZ back-pressure flap valves which prevents the effects of a dust explosion travelling from the filter,
back along ductwork, and into the factory. All production machines are fitted with Ecogate automatic dampers which open and close as machines come on-line or shut down – the end result is a highlyefficient, optimised system that only uses energy when required. 0800 040 7116 DCSlimited.co.uk

Westbridge Furniture originally contacted Daltons Wadkin to assess the working process at one of its four UK production sites. A specialist in solid wood and panel processing technology, Daltons Wadkin soon identified solutions to bottlenecks within key areas including crosscutting and panel sizing.
Salvador hat trick for Daltons Wadkin
The first installation at Westbridge Furniture included a Salvador SuperPush S200 automatic optimising crosscut saw with tilt-return outfeed station, replacing four manually operated radial arm saws. Combined with an Altendorf F45 panel saw with CNC rip fence, what once were bottlenecks quickly become shining examples of efficiency with a reduction in labour, decreased waste, and an increase in productivity and improved accuracy. “Typically we find that a Salvador SuperPush S200 will replace up to four or five manual crosscutting operations, reducing labour from five skilled operators to one or two
FP270_pages.5.indd 18
flexible operators. The savings in labour alone return the investment within six months,” comments Andy Walsh, sales director at Daltons Wadkin. Westbridge Furniture operates principally out of the UK with sites occupying in excess of 400,000ft2, employing just over 900 people who manufacture and service over 7500 pieces of upholstery per week. In addition, it employs over 100 people in its dedicated cut-and-sew factory in Romania. “Flexibility was a key point for Westbridge,” comments Andy. “Boasting made-to-order manufacturing capabilities for their full product range exceeding
109,000 different options, the machinery needed to be quick to program, and adaptable to everchanging production demands.” The success of the first Westbridge Salvador installation was quickly repeated across the other two manufacturing sites with a total of three SuperPush S200 saws installed and a number of Altendorf F45 panel saws. “The Westbridge story is testament to what a Salvador can do for customers using manual crosscutting methods, or older generations of automatic saws,” says Alex Dalton, Daltons Wadkin director. “Anyone who thinks they may
be missing out should contact us for a working demonstration at our extensive showroom facilities in Nottingham, or to arrange a visit to an existing Salvador customer in a relevant industry.” He concludes: “As the long standing main distributors for Salvador in the UK and Ireland we have established ourselves as crosscutting experts with extensive experience in industries manufacturing a range of products including sofas and beds, garden buildings, pallets, packing cases, timber-framed buildings, as well as high production saw mills.’ 0115 986 5201 daltonswadkin.com

Following installation of an AXYZ 6010 CNC router in October of last year, Waltham Abbey, Essex-based B2B Exhibitions has been able to take on a huge amount of additional work that has contributed significantly to the company’s future growth prospects.
AXYZ router boosts business growth at B2B Exhibitions
15
B2B Exhibitions owner Greg Shire commenced business seven years ago as a singleperson enterprise, operating initially out of his garage. As business developed, he moved to the present 3,500ft2 facility, employing a full-time staff of five and using up to 20 additional part-time employees, contingent upon the level of work in progress, at any given time. B2B Exhibitions specialises in the bespoke fabrication of exhibition stands, special event promotional displays and shopfitting units. The AXYZ router is used for virtually all of the company’s output, ranging from the processing of mediumdensity fibreboard (MDF) for the production of furniture, melaminefaced boards for high-end exhibition stand elements and fabricated Perspex acrylic sheets. Greg Shire comments: “Since installation of the
FP270_pages.5.indd 20
router, we have been able to take on much more work, to the extent that it has been possible to set up a new business called cncwarehouse. co.uk to fully maximise the router’s capabilities.” The AXYZ 6010 installed at B2B Exhibitions has a processing area of 2159mm (width) x 3048mm (length). It also incorporates the AXYZ Automatic Tool Change (ATC) and the AXYZ Vision System (AVS) production tools. Greg Shire adds: “The router also includes special pop-up pins on either side of the machine bed. “These ensure that successive sheets of material are always located in the same position on the bed, while the AVS provides precise alignment of the program with any printed graphics to ensure optimum routing/cutting accuracy and a perfectly finished end product.” In common with all AXYZ routers,
the 6010 can be supplied with additional machining options. These include the AXYZ Auto Zone Management facility that ensures the material being processed is always held securely during the routing/ cutting process and the latest A2MC machine control system. “The A2MC system has a massive 16GB memory for program storage, as well as providing network connectivity for error-free program transfer. A further optional production tool enhancement is the latest helical rack and pinion drive system. “This incorporates a multiple gear teeth configuration that helps spread the workload more evenly, leading to greater cutting accuracy, faster throughput speeds, reduced material wastage and ultimately a longer than normal machine life. Included in a number of high-end projects that involved the use of the AXYZ 6010 router was a special pop-
up shop created for optical specialist Leica. Greg Shire continues: “The entire structure was made from plywood that was cut by the router, with a MDF frontage that was painted to simulate the appearance of brick. “The router was also used internally to build the B2B office that is made of wood. It involved the processing of 150 sheets of 18mm hardwood ply over a period of four days.” As to the service provided by AXYZ International, Greg Shire concludes: “The service has been exceptional and the advice and problem-solving support freely given was of particular benefit to our business.” 01952 291600 axyz.com 01992 713202 b2bexhibitionsltd.com

Wood Waste Technology race against time to maximise RHI payments for customer.
Biomass boiler helps manufacturer race against time Wood Waste Technology (WWT) has recently installed one of its new biomass hot water boiler systems into a Northamptonshire company that was looking to reduce its carbon footprint and lower its bills whilst benefitting from the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme. The state-of-the-art boiler was installed into Astabridge Ltd, a manufacturer and installer of specialist furniture, display, shopfittings and point-of-sale equipment that has supplied premium quality fixtures to retailers, beauty salons, international airports and commercial premises since 1989. The management team at Astabridge was keen to embrace more environmentally-friendly solutions, and had read about the benefits of biomass boilers in trade journals. When they calculated how much money was being spent each year on hiring skips to remove wood waste, and then on gas-fired heating
FP270_pages.5.indd 22
to keep the 65 employees in the 30,000ft2 factory in Corby warm during the colder months, they realised that the business could benefit financially from investing in a biomass boiler. Whilst doing more research, the team learnt that the business could qualify for generous RHI payments by purchasing one of WWT’s new biomass boilers, which provide space heating for the factory, plus heating and domestic hot water for the rest of the building. The Government’s RHI offers substantial financial benefits to companies that invest in new biomass technology. For example, companies with successful RHI applications could earn around £17,000-£21,500 a year, for 20 years, with a 209kW boiler. WWT’s revolutionary boiler is one of the most efficient wood waste boilers available in the UK, having been designed and tested to BSEN3035-2012, the highest standard for efficiency and emissions. It has been independently tested at 92.4%
efficiency, allowing it to qualify for the Energy Technology List. “It was also the first in the UK to be declared fully compliant with the RHI scheme without the need for additional flue gas filtration equipment, significantly reducing the investment and on-going maintenance costs of an RHIcompliant boiler. WWT boilers can also operate in clean air zones under the Clean Air Act, as the boilers meet the two highest standards in emissions regulations, so are able to be used in even the sternest of jurisdictions in the UK. WWT also has a 100% success rate in RHI applications for companies burning chipboard and MDF. The boilers have been designed to be user friendly, and contain many innovative features that gives Astabridge flexibility of use. For instance, the boiler can run from 30% up to full capacity, so it can be turned down when the factory is empty, which makes better use of resources
and gives the company a greater return on each kilogramme of wood waste. The boiler can also work in low fire mode if the business ever finds itself with limited wood waste to feed the boiler, or can be operated in turbo mode to boost heat output if required. Astabridge also purchased a GAZ82 shredder, to enable the company to more easily store any wood waste it preferred not to use straight away. WWT is the official UK distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications. The team at Astabridge purchased its boiler at a time when a drop in the RHI tariff was imminent. Although it was a race against time, WWT’s experienced engineers pulled out all the stops to finish everything by the deadline, to allow Astabridge to claim the highest rate of RHI possible. Martin Pope, finance director at Astabridge says: “Buying a biomass boiler has helped solve our long term problem of expensive waste removal and heating costs in the business, and we’re pleased we’ve found this solution. The team at WWT has really helped us incorporate the new boiler into our usual working practices, and worked hard to help us maximise the financial benefits available from the RHI scheme.” MD of WWT, Kurt Cockroft says: “With any new technology there’s always a learning curve, which is why we’re always happy to help our customers in any way we can, even if that means jumping onto a video call to answer a question quickly.” WWT’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, WWT is also a distributor of Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems – a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. 01785 250400 woodwastetechnology.com grossuk.co.uk putzmaus.co.uk

When duty calls for John Dunne, owner of Mother Hubbards Cupboards, to design a new kitchen, he says it’s a pleasure and not a chore, thanks to Cabinet Vision.
Call Of Duty? – Cabinet Vision makes it a pleasure Designing bespoke kitchens for individual customers in and around Leeds, John Dunne finds it ideal for his popular lay-on, modular system. And he says it is the only CAD software he has come across that can handle his speciality – a traditional frame system. “Some people play computer games such as Call Of Duty for leisure, as a pasttime. I have Cabinet Vision – that’s gaming for me,” says John. Cabinet Vision is able to create the frames as one continuous run of bespoke units, as opposed to the modular system where all the separate units butt together. “Before installing Cabinet Vision I had to physically draw my frame system designs using pencil and paper on an old-fashioned drawing board. No other software could do it.” Even curved frames incorporating the front and side of the cabinet can be handled with ease by Cabinet Vision. “I call it a traditional frame because this is how cabinets used to look in the old days, before the advent of modular systems. I first saw a skilled joiner in Ireland use this traditional structure, creating cabinets by hand, and I thought they looked so much better than the lay-on modular cabinets.” He says another of Cabinet Vision’s great strengths is not only its perfect 3D rendered image of the design, but its ability to show the engineering behind the kitchen, with the wire frame view detailing exactly how everything is put together. “Many kitchen design systems seem more geared towards presentation than technical
John Dunne, owner of Mother Hubbards Cupboards
substance, but I find this software’s constructional detail to be particularly valuable. “It will also give me the sizes of housings for the standard drawers, tool and pan containers and storage boxes, along with housings for ovens and microwaves.” As he became more confident with using Cabinet Vision he found he was re-honing his drawing skills and becoming a better designer. “And that’s after 14 years experience on a traditional drawing board. It allows me to ‘go into’ each cabinet and literally re-invent its properties. I can customise its dimensions, composition and functionality. “As a design tool, I’ve found that Cabinet Vision has an almost molecular grasp of detail and an ability to re-jig and move that detail Some of Mother Hubbards Cupboards’ impressive cabinetry
FP270_pages.5.indd 24
John Dunne says that it’s the closest customers will see what their kitchen’s going to be like without it actually being there around as required.” This is a vital aspect for every kitchen produced by Mother Hubbards Cupboards. “The bespoke element of my work means everything comes down to detail, and I frequently need a cabinet that’s 1- or 2mm above or below a normal size.” Because the software allows John to readily design such bespoke cabinets, he is able to use standard timber doors. “With standard doors I need greater flexibility in the cabinets to compensate. And, as a technophobe, even my limited knowledge of the software means I’ve been able to take my business to another level.” Regarding his own cabinetry, he says nothing is off the shelf, unless he puts it there. “I’ve built my own
library, which helps to enhance the overall design process of each individual kitchen.” Whether customers choose the modular kitchen or the high end traditional frame system, they always experience what he calls a eureka moment when he shows them the 3D image of how it will look in situ. Summing up, he says the software gives him a feeling of positivity and confidence, lightening the workload because he now regards designing as a pleasure, rather than work. “Cabinet Vision provides a win-win, situation – I love the designing side of the business, and it’s the closest customers will see what their kitchen’s going to be like without it actually being there.” verosoftware.com motherhubbards.co.uk

Carriage with independent raising of the main blade and scoring blade is now available on the Sigma Prima.
SCM’s entry-level beam saw now opens up new prospects
The entry-level Sigma Prima now boasts independent raising of the main- and scoring blades SCM’s Sigma Prima beam saw is recommended as an ideal solution for the advanced woodworker and the small woodworking companies. Controlled by a PC/PLC control system, it is designed to cut to size solid wood panels, chipboard, MDF, multilayer panels, plywood panels and fibre panels. A specification update now provides new opportunities – the independent raising of the main blade and scoring blade is now also available on the SCM Sigma Prima beam saw range, thus increasing the potential of using and making

possible more machining facilities. Of course, as with all machinery and equipment, maintaining tools in the best condition is critical to achieving optimum performance and efficiency. SCM’s Sigma Prima contributes positively here with time optimisation and reduction of costs for tool maintenance thanks to the optimised height adjustment of the main blade projection on two levels – permitting the setting of the lower blade height in order to limit the blade wear and assure a better finishing quality. Finishing accuracy, also in the machining of materials other than wood, is another important factor. Moreover, a device for the blade lubrication is now available: this also allows the use of the machine for sizing of materials other than wood, by reducing friction during machining and thus improving cutting quality. A key attribute of the Sigma Prima beam saw range is the large availability for devices on the saw blade carriage. There is a scoring blade for post-forming machining, with a maximum panel thickness 40mm; there is optimised main blade projection on two levels with a lower height of 35mm and a higher height of 70mm; the grooves execution device (feed/return); the slots execution device; and the cooling and lubrication device for the main blade. 0115 977 0044 scmgroup.me.uk

With the new Redocol Teclinex One-For-All, Ostermann has created a new generation of inline surface cleaners – it is a new development for use on all common plastic surfaces and ensures optimum milling and cleaning results when used in automatic edgebanding machines.
Universal inline surface cleaner from Ostermann
Redocol Teclinex One-For-All can be used at each section of the edgebander where it ensures a perfect edge finish and milling result As its name suggests, the Redocol Teclinex One-For-All can be used at each section of the edgebander where it ensures a perfect edge finish and milling result. At the same time the cleaner is suitable for all edging material such as ABS, acrylic, PVC, PP, aluminium, melamine and real wood.
Advanced chemistry allows the residue-free cleaning of EVA hot melt adhesive, PUR adhesive and contact adhesive. At the same time the product can be used as a release agent for dirt and glue. Residue-free drying gives no problems for post-forming. The cleaner is based on a vegetable-based alcohol (wheat distillate) and contains no emulsifiers or formaldehyde. The legally required environmental
details are clearly written below. Since Redocol Teclinex One-For-All contains no silicones, over-painting is possible without any problems. Efficiency across the board If Redocol Teclinex One-For-All is used at each section on the edgebander, inventory and storage costs will reduce. At the same time compliance with the Hazardous Substances regulations is simplified due to lower inventory levels.

Decorative Panels Lamination has recently introduced the very heavily structured finish, Ocean Drive as a stock design. It is a WPC substrate, coated with a polyolefin-based film.
New finish for Decorative Panels
Ocean drive Ocean Drive is ideal for the surface-coating of various wood-based materials and is used in the production of high-quality furniture components, wall and ceiling panels. The feature of this surface material is its unique heavily-textured surface with a threedimensional quality. At first glance this material may appear tricky to edge, however it is actually quite straight-forward and can give an impressive result, as Julian Tatham, The Decorative Panels design director explains: “Any edging material from 0.8mm to 3mm can be used. Our view is that the best visual results are obtained with 0.8mm edging although thicker edging will allow a larger tolerance when setting the chamfer as detailed below.
FP270_pages.5.indd 34
“First, measure the thickness of the finished board – Ocean Drive material is up to 2mm thick so the width of edging used and the height setting on your edgebander needs to account for this extra thickness. “Next, select the chamfer cutting section of your trimming blocks, set the trimming block so that they trim back the edging and also cut back into the surface material but go no lower than the lowest valley in the surface material as in the illustration below. “The trimmer can be set lower than the lowest valley but only to trim into the edging – so the thicker the edging the lower the chamfer can go. A little trial and error may need to be used to refine the setting and to get the look that you are happy with.”
The Decorative Panels Group website is now responsive for easy viewing on different platforms and is full of information on all its products and companies. As the primary point of reference for design selection from Decorative Panels’ extensive collection of dp-decor and dpspecialist finishes, the company has enhanced the functionality and interactive experience in a number of ways. This includes having all its designs on screen with the ability to filter through species, collections and shades, design assistance with swatches featuring complementary and alternative colourways, and all company literature and design swatches available to view on screen and download. decorativepanels.co.uk

Alphacam software has been instrumental in helping cabinetmaker Neil Haynes turn his passion into a living.
Alphacam is music to guitar maker’s ears Neil Haynes has been making guitars as a hobby entirely by hand for 25 years, and he established Haynes Guitars around two years ago to combine his love for music with woodworking. There are two strings to the company’s bow – firstly, making complete custom-built guitars for individual customers, and secondly, producing necks and bodies for other luthiers. “It’s great making things by hand, but there’s not a lot of money in it. Everything I’ve ever made is a good instrument, but using Alphacam to drive my CNC router means I can produce a lot more guitars, and every one will be to the highest standard,” says Neil. “When I’m making repeat guitar bodies I need to be able to walk
Neil has been producing guitars for 25 years

away from the machine knowing each one will be perfect when the cycle finishes. I invested in a Felder Format Profit HO8 router, and have been using it with Alphacam for the last 12 months. It’s the only way I can show a profit.” He says it has revolutionised the way he works, and given him a business with a future – already exporting to many countries, including New Zealand, USA, Norway, Germany, Italy and Northern Ireland. Currently selling around 40 bodies and necks a month – which he says makes up around two-

FP270_pages.5.indd 36
thirds of his total output, with the remaining third being complete custom-made guitars – he says each body used to take around two days to produce by hand. Now, the back and front of a guitar body with 2D geometry is done in about 30 minutes using Alphacam, while a 3D carved top takes around 45 minutes. Neil says this will lead to him doubling that output in the coming months. “And I can create a neck with fingerboard and inlay in about an hour and a quarter. Previously I’d spend well over a day just on the woodwork side of it,” he adds. As a complete novice for both CAD and CAM, the quick learning curve was music to his ears: “I now enjoy programming with Alphacam just as much as I did doing everything by hand. There’s still some hand finishing, but Alphacam does all the actual woodworking and carving, and gives me full confidence that each guitar will come out exactly as I want it to.” The components making up the guitar have to be 100% accurate, he says, especially the pockets for attaching the neck to the body: “If it’s not a good joint, the instrument’s tone won’t be right.” A luthier’s skills also include knowing which timbers work well together, and the finish required. Bodies are made from various woods, including alder for its strong, clear, full-bodied mids and impressive lows; swamp ash, with its twangy, airy sound; and the warm, resonant korina. Maple and walnut are also popular for veneered tops. The fingerboards are mainly
padauk, rosewood, or maple. The biggest challenge to Neil’s manufacturing process is continuity of quality – which Alphacam overcomes with ease: “The fretwork has to be perfect. If a slot for the wire should be 0.6mm wide, that’s what it has to be. And using Alphacam to program the router, that’s never going to waiver – it’ll be the same on every guitar. If the fingerboard needs a 7.5in radius, that’s exactly what it’ll be.” Neil says Alphacam’s ability to easily manipulate toolpaths is one of its best features: “If someone requires a neck which is a little deeper in some parts, and thinner in others, it’s so easy to alter it. Or if a customer wants dot inlays to be 4mm instead of the traditional 6mm I simply change the diameter of the circle with a tick of the box, and that updates the toolpath. It takes seconds, but doing it by hand would take hours.” Being a one-man band, Alphacam has given Neil a business that turns a profit, and is worth investing his time in: “At first I was nervous about learning and using CAD and CNC machinery, never having done it before. But I needn’t have been. Alphacam means I can draw a product that is easily machineable, maintains consistent quality through perfect toolpaths, and sells.” All in all, Alphacam has struck just the right note in ensuring Neil Haynes’ dream of turning his passion into his living was not only possible, but enjoyable, too. verosoftware.com haynesguitars.co.uk

MAKA had an interesting demonstration on its stand called Run-My-Robot – not only loading and unloading by robot, this set-up was said to be unique insofar as the robot is controlled, and programmed, via the MAKA-Siemens controller: the programmer only needs to know one programming system –Siemens CNC.
MAKA’s Run My Robot
MAKA are Kuka developers and while the main robot hardware is Kuka, the application and programming, and moreover the interface, is pure MAKA. The MAKA-Kuka Robot was demonstrated fully-integrated with the popular MK7s five-axis machining centre, featuring a useful 1700 x 1000 x 600 mm usable 3D working area. Furthermore, the MK7s was featured with the new 16kW POWER-MAKA spindle and 50-degree head, providing greater speed and rigidity to produce the best surface quality at high speed. The spindle can change any of the 12 tools in the magazine automatically within 10 seconds – tools can be up to 300 mm long. Moreover, the MAKA-Kuka changed-over fixtures within 30 seconds. Instant jig and fixture changes, all handle by the robot, has been made a reality by MAKA. Fixtures are clamped accurately every time, so parts sit precisely in the right place, which
FP270_pages.5.indd 40
ensures your five-axis program works 100% correctly first time. This is high speed machining in action, and is ideal for high quality bespoke furniture and joinery production. The robot attaches itself to the fixtures using similar zero-point fixings used for the fixtures. They will work reliably for years, require little maintenance, and are designed to be fail-safe. The robot even stores the jigs. In between loading and setting operations, the robot can also be programmed to carry out small machining operations, such as notching, de-tagging, drilling or inserting hardware. For the recent Holz Handwerk show in Nuremberg, MAKA made an entertaining demonstration illustrating how a sub-operation can be utilised at the push of a button, in between its Normal program: the robot very kindly opened a fridge and took out a cold bottle and ‘handed’ it to me... MAKA’s CNC robot applications specialist,
Alex Hiller, said that with its Run-My-Robot, the robot is easier to program this way and will be perfectly synchronised with the CNC machine. It makes it possible to not only load and unload, but also to do other works during the five-axis CNC machining cycle, saving time and reducing costs. The robot can pick and position parts, or remove offcuts – even when the table is moving – or drill holes, or add parts. Effectively being a CNC robot, the new system is also quicker to learn to programme. The learning curve is much shorter, maintenance is almost nothing too. It becomes easier and quicker to set-up any new job, both in terms of programming, as well as loading and changing fixtures – and tools – making this ideal for small batch production. “If manufacturers have any misgiving about using robots, MAKA’s Run-My-Robot is the solution. You’ll rest easy!” says Alex. maka.com

Egger is the first wood-based panel board manufacturer in the UK to be awarded the ISO 50001:2011 standard for its Energy Management System at its Hexham and Barony sites.
Egger the first to receive international energy award
Left to right: Paul Turner, Dr Keith Jones and Joan Iborra Rubio in the finishing end department Egger has cultivated a well-deserved reputation for its focus on clean manufacturing and sustainability over many years and always strives to be at the forefront of the highest industry standards of the day. This latest international accreditation achievement is only awarded to those companies who satisfy a rigorous, externally auditing programme and can demonstrate an ongoing commitment to efficiently use energy to further reduce the environmental impact of their activities. Paul Turner, environmental, health and safety manager at Egger, explains: “As a chipboard manufacturer, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, our processes are energy intensive. Gaining the ISO 50001 standard is therefore a major accomplishment for a company such as ours. To underline our commitment to continually improve our energy usage, we took the decision to appoint a technologist specifically for Energy Management. Joan Iborra Rubio has been a key member of the team responsible for successfully implementing this programme and his role will help us to minimise our environmental footprint and our production costs on an ongoing basis.” Egger is the largest chipboard manufacturer in the UK, producing over a million cubic metres per year. Since 2006, it has invested over £200m at its Hexham site and in the last five years alone
FP270_pages.5.indd 46
has ploughed more than £90 million into highly energy-efficient plant machinery and processes to reduce the plant’s consumption of fossil fuels. This has included a new glue-making plant, a fifth lamination line and the replacement of a second impregnation line, as well as new technology on the chipboard line which enables the company to increase its efficiency and production. Joan Iborra Rubio, technologist in energy management at Egger, commented: “For myself, it is extremely satisfying to work for such a successful manufacturing company that is so focused on reducing its environmental impact. The ISO 50001 accreditation acts as another incentive for us to continue with our aim to further reduce energy usage and will operate alongside our existing ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.” To achieve the ISO 50001:2011 standard at both the Hexham, Northumberland and Barony Ayrshire sites, the company worked closely with BM TRADA Certification Ltd.
Dr Keith Jones, lead auditor at BM TRADA Certification Ltd said: “I congratulate Egger on achieving the ISO 50001:2011 Energy Management System Certification. Throughout my dealings with the company I have found them to be thoroughly committed to minimising the impact their activities have on the environment, accreditation to their Energy Management System certainly enhances this commitment.” The ISO 50001:2011 Energy Management System is an internationally recognised standard that provides a framework for organisations to control, maintain and improve an energy management system. The standard aims to ensure organisations will continually improve their energy performance and promote energymanagement best-practice, initiate high levels of energy efficiency, reduce energy consumption and assist in evaluating and prioritising the implementation of new energy-efficient technologies. egger.com

Varying lengths of timber can be individually pre-loaded onto the infeed table and the machine will scan and measure each piece individually, looking for marked defects before optimising the lengths to be cut to ensure maximum yield. Alternatively multiple lengths can
be stacked in packs and the cutting lists optimised further increasing processing efficiency. SuperPush 250 For maximum cross-cutting speed and efficiency at 90° the SuperPush 250 features a chain infeed loading system allowing single or multiple stacked workpieces to be automatically and continuously fed into the machine. The range of out-feed options available for the SuperPush range include waste trap door, tilt-andreturn collection plane, automatic outfeed length selector and label or injet printing

Homag’s five-axis processing centres – faster production at an affordable price
Homag’s five-axis CNC machines – more affordable than ever As the need for faster, more complex production increases, Homag asserts that its five-axis CNC machines are within reach of smaller manufacturers. Historically there has been a perception in the market, particularly amongst smaller manufacturers, that five-axis processing centres could only be afforded by the larger companies. As the need for faster production times and more bespoke and complex production increased, however, technological advances have meant that price levels have fallen, so now even the smaller manufacturers can invest in five-axis CNC machinery. Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director at Homag UK explains: “The Homag Group has been working on making five-axis
FP270_pages.5.indd 54
technology more affordable for all levels of manufacturing. “The result has been a range of machines with a variety of functions, including routing, sawing, drilling and edgebanding units which are customisable for each level of the market. With the added ability to provide complete cycle production, these CNC machines can reduce the amount of equipment needed, keep running costs low and yet maintain high quality production with fast output rates.” Customisable processing with optional table solutions Homag’s range of five-axis processing centres is available with
three different table options. The popular pod and rail table consists of vacuum suction pods attached to a moving rail system. This securely holds the workpiece in place, preventing it from moving whilst eliminating damage to the table or tools during processing. This table can be used with a large variety of size and material types. With quick set-up times, the pod and rail table is an ideal system for companies, such as bespoke manufacturers, that change workpiece material and size regularly or only produce small batches. The pod and rail table is also available with clamps instead of vacuum pods for more precise
and detailed wood processing. The second table option, the flat matrix table, holds larger components in place using a large surface vacuum system. For smaller, individual parts the flat table lends itself nicely to holding jig fixtures or specific clamps to allow intricate five-axis machining to take place. The final table option, a twin tabled router, splits the pod and rail tables into two machines, in effect allowing them to operate independently. This means one table can be carrying out a process such as drilling or routing whilst the other table’s workpieces are exchanged.

The dual function of Homag’s twin tabled routers means manufacturing downtime is significantly reduced due to the intelligent software that drives the machine. Not only does this produce faster and more efficiently than conventional routers, it can also accommodate up to four tool heads to be used synchronously. This is extremely beneficial to manufacturers as it allows complete cycle production using just one machine. Flexible axis options for swift tool multi-tasking with the Homag 500 series CNCs The 500 series is freely configurable allowing users to choose from several different combinations including five-axis alone, three+fiveaxis, four+five-axis and five+five axis. This offers increased flexibility, including multiple head changes with the large range of tools available. The machine operator can therefore save time during the manufacturing process with faster tool changes which shorten the cycle time. The variety of tools available for Homag’s five-axis processing centres provides tailored solutions for each company’s needs. With capabilities including sawing, routing and drilling, the highly versatile machines can have up to three processing units individually
“Homag’s CNC processing centres are essential powerhouses which consistently produce high quality results” mounted for fast tool exchange. The Homag Group also has additional tools available which equip the fiveaxis with edgebanding capabilities. The 500 series can be fitted with either PowerEdge, which uses tape and glue or the technically advanced laserTec unit for premium quality zero-joint edgebanding. Fast and simple programming with woodWOP software For increased simplicity, Homag’s CNC processing centres operate with its woodWOP software as standard. This reduces the need for complex third party software. Using 3D graphics, this fast and intuitive software system offers operators flexible machine programming with simple navigation on Homag’s powerTouch operating screens. The full multi-touch HD monitor adds to the simplicity of Homag CNC processing centres. Success with UK installations With the Homag Group producing around 1500 processing centres a year, the flexibility of the range makes them a perfect solution for the joinery or panel market. A large number of these five-axis installations has been in the UK,
creating specialist solutions for both entry-level and larger-sized manufacturers. The Homag Venture 316 fiveaxis machine has brought huge productivity gains to Terry Smiths that manufactures coffins and caskets for the funeral services market. Not only has the machine delivered reduced production times, but also a significant saving to its bottom line, resulting in a faster return on investment. Andrew Ryan Furniture, a high end, bespoke kitchen and joinery specialist in Ireland installed the new Homag BMG 611 when looking to update its production facilities and capabilities. Saving time and money, the five-axis BMG 611 allowed it to easily create bespoke, complex carvings without any restrictions on woodworking capabilities. Simon Brooks concludes: “Homag’s CNC processing centres are essential powerhouses which consistently produce high quality results. If you would like to see a demonstration of any of the Homag Group CNC processing centres, call Adele Hunt at our Homag UK offices on 01332 856424.” 01332 856500 homag-uk.co.uk The highly versatile five-axis processing centres available with a large range of tools

There is a modest confidence allied to a creative zeal which underlines many sucessful businesses. One such star in the furniture industry’s firmament is the Austrian fittings firm, Julius Blum GmbH. John Legg recently spent time visiting some of the company’s Austrian manufacturing bases to understand how it continues to define a market sector with some of the most resolved functional furniture fittings ever created.
Blum’s fitting result Well known for its great outdoors winter activities, Austria is also an entirely agreeable place to be in the summertime, when the air is clear, and the valleys are as lush as the mountains are dramatic. It is here that the innovative fittings firm has made its home since 1952, in Vorarlberg near Bregenz on the eastern shore of Lake Constance. As readers of this magazine will know, Blum is very much part of the furniture. The company has been at the forefront of the furniture fittings industry for many years and is currently enjoying year-on-year growth of 8% with a worldwide turnover for 2014-15 of €1.5b. Around half of its output in sold directly to the EU, 15% in the US and 35% to the rest of the world. With 6600 employees, and subsidiaries in 27 countries, this family-owned business supplies over 120 companies worldwide. Of course, the company is rightly famous
“What becomes clear when you spend any amount of time with Blum personnel is the spirit that defines the business – it’s difficult to be specific, but positive, long-term thinking pervades everything they do”
FP270_pages.5.indd 57
for key milestones, including, in 1985, its CLIP tool-free hinge, and in 1993, its box system drawer, and then in 1999 for the beautful highperformance CLIP top hinge. Into the noughties, the company kept on delivering outstanding products – Blumotion made its debut, the Aventos lift system followed in 2005 and then Servo-Drive came along in 2010. At last year’s Interzum, the latest Blum innovations made their debut before the attending throng. Among these, a new design for Blum’s Space Tower, using the Legrabox system featuring glass elements for the drawers’ sides, impressed visitors with its practical and aesthetically-pleasing look. For wall cabinets, Blum introduced the Aventos HK-XS lift mechanism for cabinets ranging from 240-600mm in height and from a depth of just 125mm. Tip-On Blumotion was featured heavily as a response to the plethora of handleless drawer and door fronts, providing furniture designers with optimum opening and closing ease. Elsewhere, Blum further optimised all three Tandembox options with better opening feel, stability and smoother running characteristics. But more than just being a hugely impressive product developer, what becomes clear when you spend any amount of time with Blum personnel – from the great and the good to the guys on the shop floor – is the palpable spirit that defines the business. It’s difficult to be specific, but positive, long-term thinking pervades everything they do.

58 UPDATE Take for instance, Plant 3 in Höchst, Austria, the engineering centre and home to Blum’s R&D, toolmaking design, and the apprentices’ training centre. Nearby, there is the impressive design centre – a generous, multi-functional space which welcomes designers and manufacturers who can go hands-on with all the company’s products and see how how they work and fit in with their thinking. Blum is always thinking about the future and how its products and business strategy will work within that future vision, and this space expertly proves the point. During my tour, the R&D facility was sadly off limits, but, glimpsed through a door left ajar, highly talented types were focused on the next generation of innovations. At the time of my visit, the rear of Plant 2 was where the apprentices were being trained, gaining the skills they need to become fully-fledged Blum staff. This exemplary training is another part of being Blum – very thorough and well-resourced. Since then, a newer facility is being created in a building next to Plant 7 in the shape of The Apprentice Workshop. When complete, there will be enough space for 60 apprentices and seven instructors, ensuring it has the right calibre of staff to help take the company forward into the next generation – another example of Blum’s clear, progressive outlook. Following on from the design and R&D team, another key asset for Blum has to be its manufacturing intergity. Years ago the company could have reacted in the same way that many manufacturing companies have done, and sourced its manufacturing from a cheaper labour-cost country. As it stands, Blum has manufacturing sites in Austria, Poland, Brazil and the US. In Austria, the quality and consistency of the manufacturing facility is outstanding. The machinery that Blum uses to create its fittings has been carefully developed and honed over the generations – this type of operation cannot easily be reproduced by the myriad firms wishing to

create products with similar performance. Without its manufacturing heart, Blum would not be the Blum we know today. Here at home, we will soon see a newlyenhanced UK headquarters in Milton Keynes, replete with its recently updated, automated storage and warehouse facility. At the time of writing, Blum is on the final fit-out phase of the new-look showrooms. blum.com
Blum is well known as a long term investor in apprenticeships and training schemes – not only for its own business – and David Sanders, Blum’s sales and marketing director, had long been aware of the need for more training in the area of kitchen design, and the wider kitchen, bedroom and bathroom industry. Consequently, he played a key role in the development of the new Foundation Degree in Kitchen Design launched by Bucks New University. The launch of the Foundation Degree in Kitchen Design, the first of its kind in the UK, became reality after two years of discussions with individuals from key companies in the kitchen industry. The age range covered by the successful candidates is from 22 to 45 years old. It is a three-year blended learning Foundation Degree and includes three long-weekend residential sessions per year where students have the opportunity to meet fellow students, tutors and industry supporters and be introduced to key concepts and theories. Students also learn online and work with lecturers via the internet. The course is aimed at giving students an in-depth understanding of how to undertake design projects from start to finish with a greater understanding of client needs and design influences. David Gillett, course leader at Bucks New University – pictured – says: “We exhibited at the recent KBB Birmingham exhibition thanks to the generous support of our industry partners and our activity there showed that the course is being welcomed by increasing parts of the industry, who see it as a necessary and important requirement in assisting the professionalisation of their kitchen design businesses. “I believe our course is now viewed as valuable personal development by individuals, including those in studios aiming to gain an edge as formally-qualified designers, for people within the industry’s supply chain wishing to broaden their understanding, those involved in installation wishing to move into design, and for people wishing to enter the industry either from another career path or as school leavers. “We are offering a programme of education that is informed by the industry for the industry that provides a breadth and depth of knowledge which seeks to challenge the students to think imaginatively in producing technically adept design solutions anchored in pragmatic scenarios. Our aim is also to make the programme an enjoyable experience for the students while demanding high standards in their assignments. Our ambition for our innovative course is that it will become a benchmark qualification for the kitchen industry and that our graduates will fill important roles within it in the future.” Well supported by the kitchen industry, scholarships to cover or contribute to the £5000 annual fees come from BSH, Hettich, Blanco, Miele and Mereway Kitchens. Further sponsorship for employees comes from Blum, BSH again, Denmore Kitchens, Farnham Furnishers, Four Seasons Interiors, Round-house and Sensio. Additional support has been offered through visits, lectures and materials from many industry supporters, including an input from Egger. David Sanders enthuses about the Foundation degree course, saying: “At Blum we have a culture of sponsoring apprentices and this course is another way of investing in the future of our industry.” bucks.ac.uk

60 DOOR & WINDOW PRODUCTION
View further content at furnitureproduction.net
Since woodworking machines were first introduced, one of their biggest uses has always been producing windows and doors, timber frame doors and in later years solid core doors. Masterwood’s range of machinery and software is ideal for window and door production.
Masterwood – door and window production
4WIN2 The procedure to make a timber window or door has not changed for generations: once the material is prepared, the cut-off lines are marked on the timber, the mortise and tenon positions etc. Then it is a case of setting and using each machine: a crosscut, a mortiser, a tenoner, a spindle moulder – and maybe an overhead router – then it’s time to assemble, or in most cases make everything fit together, including cutting out haunches on the band saw and using hand routers for ironmongery like locks, hinges, and handles. It is quite a process, requiring significant skill and experience and of course, room for errors and inaccuracies to creep in. “As a wood machinist apprentice I spent many hours drawing lines on to door stiles and then swinging on an old Wadkin Chisel mortise arm to try and cut out all those mortises staring at me on the pallet” said Masterwood dales director, Dave Kennard.
These developments include: • Use of large diameter tooling to allow full length mortise and tenon joints to be produced • Higher powered router motors to allow stack tooling to be used • Heavy duty clamps to ensure components are held rigid on the machine bed • More tooling positions to cover the extra tools required for window and door production • Automatic bed positioning to speed up production times and reduce set up times • Specialised software to ensure the shortest time from design to production Masterwood can supply a full range of solutions to suit any customers manufacturing requirements, from its entry level Project 250, through to the
top end Project 565 – a five axis machine with all possible options for tooling and clamping. On top of this, Masterwood can provide dedicated machines such as the 4WIN2, a new version of the original 4WIN, a CNC machine with a unique clamping system for windows where the work piece never moves. Each component is held firmly in place while every operation is carried out, even the recesses for all the ironmongery, so once the material leaves the machine it can be put together like a jig saw and is ready for finishing and glazing. With an automatic loading and unloading system the machine can run for up to four hours unattended.
Masterwood developments Today, life can be so much easier, with just one machine, a CNC machining centre. For the last twenty-five years, the Italian machine manufacturer Masterwood SpA has been developing its machines to suit today’s demand for solid timber bespoke joinery.
Colombo WindowMaster

At the top end of window production, Dave says Masterwoood can supply the fully automated Colombo WindowMaster range of machines, which can run for anything from two to four hours with the components pre-loaded on to the handling equipment, automatically loading each piece, fully machining each item, and then stacking the finished components in their sets at the end. This means that it is possible to basically have a one man production factory producing up to 750 components per eight hour working day. With three men the system can then work 24 hours per day. Traditional sliding sash windows Traditional box windows can be seen in all major towns and cities and have been a traditional part of our joinery history. They are, however, notorious for being difficult to produce with traditional methods, the many varying set ups and joints are a minefield for costly mistakes. Today, Dave says he has a number of customers who have produced traditional sliding sash windows on their CNC’s where the machining time for one complete frame and a pair of sashes is under two man hours, the parts all then fit together with practically no bench or hand work. With traditional methods this same job could take a full day. Dave has found that customers with CNC machines can now produce batches, or one-off windows and doors in a fraction of the time that is needed with traditional woodworking machines. Window lines versus CNC When put up against window lines, the CNC machines can look slower on individual operations, but if you look at the manufacturing time for a fully finished window or door, then the CNC will come out on top as there is far more that can be produced, like glazing beads being cut out and mitred to the finished length, ironmongery recesses all produced. Other areas like shaped work, after assembly work, cutting out haunches on tenons, all gives
the CNC an advantage. On top of this, while the machine is working, the operator can be doing another job, getting the next batch prepared, or assembling the last batch. “We also find that the tooling costs for a CNC can be as much as 50% lower than that required for window lines,” says Dave, “and health and safety is greatly improved by removing high risk operations from traditional machines like shape work. Door Production Solid core and fire doors can be produced on our entry level Project 250, but in many cases our customers have gone to the longer 5200mm bed sizes of the Project 300 and 400 ranges which allow doors and frames to be tandem loaded so that the CNC never stops. With lower cost 5 axis machines like the Project 265 now available these are also proving popular with door customers as it helps cut down on tooling costs. Robots can also be introduced at this stage to automatically load and unload the machine, including passing the information to the CNC control as to what work needs to be carried out. Largerproduction For higher production we then have the Project Door and DoorLine CNC’s, machines that can be used with handling equipment to allow doors to be fed automatically into the machine, with pod and clamping positions all set by the PC, once the door has been machined it can be fed out and stacked and the next door is fed in. This system can then develop into a fully automated production line where a stack of doors is loaded on to the handling system and the full line takes over with anything up to three doors per minute being sized, apertures cut, leading edges added, along with all ironmongery recesses cut. Locks and hinges can also be inserted and fixed in position before stacking for offloading. Door frame components can also be run on a production line with joints, hinge recesses and keeps all machined, along with weatherseals being inserted into each component.
Box Window Software An important part of any CNC system is software, you can have the best machines in the world but without software to operate it correctly your production does not improve as it should. Along with all our machine developments Masterwood have always been at the front with developing software hand in hand with the machines, this ensures that both are fully compatible. Within this range of software we have MasterWindow, MasterSlidingSash, and MasterDoor that cover all the various shapes and sizes of products that customers require. If you produce windows and doors, then Masterwood can supply the packages for small batches, up to mass production automated systems like those already installed around the World for leading companies like Jeld-Wen, 3elle, Comeca, Scrigno, Audasso, Vest-Wood, and Fenestra. 01293 402700 masterwood.com

There is a CR Onsrud machine to fit almost every budget and application. The CR CNC brand of CNC routers has been developed to address the needs and problems that first-time CNC users have regularly faced when implementing CNC technology. Many customers were led to believe that they were purchasing a “Technology Solution” that would revolutionize their business, but instead found that their expectations weren’t met because either the software, training, support, or machine’s reliability was insufficient, mismatched, or lacking. They learned after-the-fact that just purchasing a machine and its onboard software did not necessarily fulfill their individual, specific, or diverse business needs, which led to their inevitable disappointment. A true “Technology Solution” must have the flexibility to be fully personalized, based on unique and specific needs, and must include sufficient and thorough local training to make its implementation successful. CR CNCs have the necessary local training, installation, and support already included as part of the standard package. By offering only proven options, upgrades, and accessories, a CR CNC “Technology Solution” carefully coordinates the machine, software, support, tooling, vacuum, and training into a complete package that virtually guarantees a successful implementation that is ready to produce on day one!

KBB Birmingham closed its having exceeded its own expectations of delivering the biggest and busiest show yet. The four days featured over 35% more exhibitors compared to 2014, all of which demonstrated a high calibre of product ranges, innovative solutions and ideas for the future of the industry.
KBB Birmingham delivers its best show to date Most exhibitors seemed pleased with the audience delivered by the organiser –some 15,650 attended across the four days which represented a 14% increase from the 2014 event. The show’s success has reaffirmed that economic and trading conditions are significantly improving and support was shown by achieving the strongest re-book figures of 65%, for KBB Birmingham 2018. This year’s KBB edition saw a strong presence from international brands in particular, including Scavolini, Schueller, Bora, Neolith and Bagno Design, as well as the return of key industry names such as BSH, Crosswater and Roper Rhodes, Hepplewhite Fitted Furniture and Mereway Kitchens. Support was also shown from industry experts within the packed Retail and Design Conference,
including CEO Gary Favell, chief executive at Bathstore, Lesley Taylor, design director at Taylors Etc, Ffion Francis, events manager at Houzz. Positive feedback for KBB Birmingham 2016 has been overwhelming with many citing it as having a buzzing and buoyant atmosphere, whilst Graham Jones, sales and marketing director at Trend Interiors deemed KBB Birmingham to be: “The glue that binds the industry together.” Sales director at KBB Birmingham, Jon Johnston concluded: “This year’s KBB Birmingham has been an outstanding success for everyone involved and I am hugely proud of the team that helped to deliver our best show yet. KBB 2016 has reaffirmed that manufacturers are producing incredibly forwardfacing and innovative solutions for the industry, and people are responding positively to these changes.
We are also extremely pleased with our record re-book figures for KBB Birmingham 2018, and the team are now looking ahead to the new Kitchen and Bathroom Design event in London next year – which we hope to be as successful as our Birmingham edition.” A key item of note was the announcement of a new kitchen and bathroom industry event to run concurrently with Ecobuild in London for next year. k+b design London bills itself as an alternative event for the forward-thinkers in kitchen and bathroom design and will take place 7-9th March 2017. KBB Birmingham remains scheduled for 4-7th March 2018 and will take place at the NEC in Birmingham. kbb.co.uk
New products draw the crowds for Salice KBB Birmingham 2016 has been a resounding success for Salice, which exhibited their range of furniture fittings for kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms at the show, which was this year held at the NEC, Birmingham. Salice went to the show with high hopes, as it was unveiling a line up of new products which highlighted its reputation as an innovation leader. One such product that drew plenty of interest was Vetro, a new family of hinges, mounting plates and accessories. Vetro has been developed to solve all applications of cabinets with glass doors, side or mirrors and due to the availability of accessories including new covers or hinge cups enabling complete integration with the cabinet. The Salice team was kept busy demonstrating the new Lineabox metal drawer system. Unique in design, the slim 9mm wall thickness makes
Lineabox one of the thinnest drawers ever and suitable for many applications and in a variety of four different colours, three different heights and can be four- or three-sided in metal, or two-sided with the drawerback made of wood. Visitors were also impressed by Shelf, the new addition to the Futura full-extension runner range. Shelf is fixed at the bottom and is ideal for a variety of applications including furniture which incorporates pull-out shelves. Also new was Stabila, a stabiliser and synchroniser which is fixed on the back of drawers. Acting as mediator among drawers, runners and furniture, Stabila has been innovatively designed by Salice to operate in a fluid and homogenous movement, thereby perfecting stabilisation to larger drawers. 01480 413831 saliceuk.co.uk
BArilliant time at the KBB Speaking after the recent KBB exhibition in Birmingham, BA Components’ sales and marketing director, David Caulfield, was positively beaming: “The show has been an amazing success for BA Components,” he said, “but even beyond that, a great success for the UK KBB industry as a whole.” When asked to elaborate further, David said: “Every year we from the UK industry head off to Italy and Germany to meet buyers, collaborate with suppliers, network with competitors and socialise with colleagues – and we do it well. This year it feels like we’ve had a ‘home game’ and the industry has come out in force at Birmingham to show the world what we are about and what we can do.” BA Components launched a new range of doors at the show: Valore By BA; as well as
FP270_pages.5.indd 64
introducing new designs in the Bella and Zurfiz range and launched twenty-one new colours in addition to Valore to celebrate in style their recent decision to develop the Clicbox range through setting up a dedicated manufacturing facility here in the UK. It’s no exaggeration to say this stand was one of the places to be at the show; always busy yet you could be sure of a friendly welcome, dedicated time with a BA expert and if you were really lucky, a great glass of prosecco to send you on your way. David was quick to point out: “We’ve booked again for 2018 and hope to see all our customers, friends and dealers again then. It’s all about momentum, keeping the market buoyant and growing, and together I believe we can and will do just that. We at BA will certainly do our part.” byba.co.uk

Blum’s highly successful appearance at March’s KBB exhibition was down to showing innovative and exclusive products – appealing to, and sparking the interest of, manufacturers, designers and specifiers, kitchen fitters and buyers alike.
Out of this world: storage and motion sorted
Blum’s Space Tower allows every inch of space to be used
Star of the show was the newly-launched Tip-On Blumotion – a combined concept that effortlessly (literally) blends the Tip-On push latch one-touch opening system with the Blumotion soft-close drawer mechanism. Tip-On Blumotion brings streamlined ease of use to handleless furniture – not just in the kitchen, but throughout the entire home. All pull-out systems and drawers can benefit from Tip-On Blumotion, which can be optimally integrated into existing planning dimensions. To set designers’ minds at ease, no additional modifications to cabinet, front panel or box need be made. A minimum front gap of just 2.5mm is required for the opening trigger function to operate, and four-dimensional adjustment means that Tip-On Blumotion can be used in any situation. Blum has extended the handle-less concept to include integrated fridges and freezers … or combinations thereof. Servo-Drive flex is a new electrical opening system for integrated cooling appliances; all it needs is a 60mm space above the appliance door. As always, the Blum concept is to make life easier for everyone, with the help of clever storage and accessibility concepts. Studies by Blum concluded that its movement and technical solutions can improve usable storage space by up to 55% when compared with ‘standard’ drawers and fixed shelves in a kitchen. The Space Tower larder unit has been made even easier to use and specify, thanks to the new ‘one box order’ system, which streamlines the ordering process. A Space Tower larder unit allows every inch of space to be used – the full extension of each shelf means that no ‘reaching in or over’ voids are needed. The easy-order one-box system comprises stainless steel Legrabox drawers, each of which can hold up to 40 kg – or 40 bags of sugar – with Blumotion soft-close technology. David Sanders, sales and marketing director at Blum UK says: “The show was a great success for us. It’s always a pleasure to meet our customers from the KBB industry, and to hear their comments about both
FP270_pages.5.indd 66
The star of Blum’s KBB show was its newly-launched Tip-On Blumotion which blends soft-close with one-touch opening our new and existing products. “We’re always excited and enthusiastic to demonstrate our new developments and technologies, and it’s inspiring to hear the responses and reactions from our valued customers. We were particularly pleased with the reaction to Space Tower and look forward to seeing the product on display in showrooms.” blum.com

With exhibitor harmony restored and a growing market once more, Italy’s top event for furniture and joinery manufacturers seems vibrant and focused – once again ready to welcome visitors back to Rho with a more positive and optimistic outlook. John Legg looks ahead to Xylexpo.
Xylexpo 2016 to be a turning point Milan every other May has been a welcome fillip on the exhibition calendar for furniture and joinery business across Europe, but it is fair to say that the event has had a difficult few events over recent years. Against the backdrop of global recession and fractured relationships among the top Italian firms, Xylexpo has struggled. But all that now seems consigned to history and once again the Italian industry is open for business and set to welcome visitors from across Europe and around the world. “We really feel that the next Xylexpo will be an essential stage in the success story of our exhibition,” says Lorenzo Primultini, president of the exhibition. “We are doing all we can to create a big event, an excellent review of innovative technology featuring all the leading actors of this industry. And I am proud to say that all Italian companies will be there!” But what can visitors expect at the next edition of the international biennial trade fair scheduled at FieraMilano-Rho from 24-28th May 2016? Here are a few figures. So far, about 300 exhibitors have registered, 22% of which are international companies. Looking closer, there is a huge number of first-time exhibitors in Milan which suggests that the figures of 2014 will probably be exceeded and visitors will be able to see lots of unique machinery and equipment in addition to the welcome return of the major international firms. “We expect at least 500 exhibitors, up on 440
FP270_pages.5.indd 68
in 2014, while the exhibition area will be around 30,000m2, more than the 26,000m2 covered two years ago. We are even more optimistic on the visitor side. In 2014 we recorded 15,250 unique visitors; this year, everything seems to suggest that we will do even better,” says Lorenzo. Of course an exhibition is not just figures, but most of all ideas, challenges, capacity to handle situations, preserving the role − despite
the problems of recent editions and thanks to the professional approach by Cepra − of an exhaustive showcase of made-in-Italy technology and the best solutions offered by manufacturers from all over the world. “Our optimism is supported by several factors,” Lorenzo adds. “First of all, our exhibition will represent the entire industry: all the key firms of the industry will be in Milan and this is a major achievement. “I am not referring only to big groups, to the fact that Barberan, Biesse, Cefla, Homag, Ima, SCM and Weinig are finally back to Milan, all together, but also to so many small- and mediumsized businesses from all over the world with their capacity to find creative solutions – they will all be in Milan, an exhibition where technology is at home, both process technology for big production volumes and tailor-made solutions for very specific needs.” Lorenzo stresses that this year’s Xylexpo will be an exhibition of innovations – because that’s what the industry asks from reference trade fairs today – and the mirror of a much better economic season. The Acimall president then announced that, starting from this year, entry to Xylexpo will be free for all operators who register online at www. xylexpo.com; without pre-registration, an entrance fee will be applied starting from this edition of €15 for one day, €25 for the entire period.

Imola-based surface tremament specialists will be showing its impressive, newly-patented machine for which delivers what the company describes as multi-directional superfinishing.
EMC to show novel sanding solution The blurb says that superfinishing is obtained by combining the technology of electronic pads with the continuous rotation of the abrasive belt, the superfining rotating abrasive belt working in harmony with a double, electronic sectioned pad unit. The Revo 1350 looks the part and certainly warrants further investigation. It features a vacuum table divided into independent sections which are controlled and synchronised. The carousel rotation is servocontrolled with the option of ‘stand still’ at any angular position.
The rotating speedadjustable from 0.1 to 40rpm and the motorised doors open, slide and fold away. The standard specifications includes: a worktable height of 910mm; and industrial PC-PLC technology with a highresolution 15.4in touch screen; a feeding speed inverter 3 to 20m/min; a Hiper Finishing abrasive belt length 4960mm; and chevron belt length of

Cefla announces important innovations for Xylexpo MD of Cefla Finishing, Alberto Maestri says: “At Xylexpo we will be presenting a number of important innovations, both technological and evolutionary to the range that we have developed paying particular attention to the operational and management costs sustained by our customers, so as to offer them advanced solutions for all operating and business requirements.” Therefore evolution and innovation will be Cefla’s primary focus at Xylexpo. “We believe,” adds Alberto, “that ongoing research and efforts made to develop processes and products are the basis of our long-standing role of a leading company and unique partner capable of supplying a complete range of customised and efficient solutions, so as to ensure our customers benefit from the best quality and efficiency.” In addition to the those innovations, Cefla will offer Xylexpo visitors the opportunity to evaluate the potential of some solutions on the spot, for example the known and consolidated “fusion and inert coating technology.” In particular, two processing cycles will alternate – a traditional primer, dried with the UV-R LED, and a UV glue primer applied with the Fusion Coating system, developed in partnership with Henkel, creator of the Technomelt CHS UV technology. cefla.it

GLOSSMAX GlossMax High Gloss panels are produced with an advanced unique technology, going through a variety of industrial processes, in which adhesive and UV lacquer is applied to melamine coated MDF or particle boards to achieve a decorative, shiny surfaced wood panel. In the hot coating process that achieves excellent adhesion to the melamine coated surface, PUR (Polyurethane) adhesive coating is applied to the melamine surface. Once the Polyurethane adhesive has gone through chemical curing an outstanding hard surface which is resistant to scratches, impacts and wear is achieved. The PUR substance is also durable against UV rays. The outer layer, which hardens with the UV rays applied directly after, provides an excellent level of gloss. This technology has forged a new path in surface coating, brought forth the natural appearance and texture of solid wood and provided a solution which has simplified the surface finish application. GlossMax panels create modern, graceful furniture combinations with mirrorshine for kitchen, bath, home, office and all other decoration projects.

Mirka has expanded its successful PROS range with new dust bag machines
Mirka expands PROS Mirka is expanding its Pneumatic Random Orbital Sanders (PROS) range with the addition of two new dust bag machines, designed for multiple sanding applications, together with a new fleece dust bag which has been developed to increase the dust collection capacity of the sander and improve the air flow. This will enable users to work in a healthier, dustfree environment as well as improve the life span of the products, leading to less down time when changing the bag. The new PROS 550DB and 650DB provide effective and durable tools for professional sanding. These machines are built for maximum
dust extraction at low suction power and have a low noise level even when operating at their 12,000rpm maximum. The PROS weighs in at less than 1kg, reducing the strain on the user’s arms, and its ergonomic design makes it user-friendly, with plenty of finger space for the controls that can easily be operated when gripping the machine with either the left or right hand. The sanders’ innovative features include a revolutionary brake seal, which eliminates the possibility of causing deep marks in the surface when the fast rotating abrasive first touches the job. When the PROS is removed from the surface, the brake seal immediately brakes the rotation speed of the backing pad.
The PROS 550DB is available with 125mm pads and the PROS 650DB comes with150mm pads. Both are equipped with a dust extraction hose, pneumatic hose, fastening strips and the new fleece dust bag. Pete Sartain, national sales manager – Industrial of Mirka UK, says: “We are continuing to invest in the development of high quality and userfriendly tools for our customers so that all sanding operations can be met easily. The innovative fleece dust bag has a much larger capacity than other bags on the market and improves the air flow of the machine so that a dust-free environment can be achieved. ” mirka.com

Impact offers free workplace extraction assessment in support of #helpgbworkwell Leading dust and fume extraction specialist, Impact Technical Services, is offering companies free workplace extraction assessments in support of a new campaign by the Health and Safety Executive. The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) has launched a new strategy for 2016 through to 2020, Helping Great Britain Work Well, to encourage employers to improve the hazardous conditions which thousands of workers are subjected to every day. Over the last ten years there has been an improvement in the health and safety record for Great Britain with the number of fatalities falling from 223 to 142 along with a reduction in the number of working days lost, although this still stands at an alarming 27.3m. Unfortunately, the number of new cases of ill health has only dropped by 29,000 over the last ten years falling from 545,000 to 516,000, leaving significant room for improvement. The HSE states, “It is an employer’s duty to protect the health, safety and welfare of their employees.” In support of the HSE campaign, Impact Technical Services (ITS) is offering free workplace assessments to evaluate the dust and fume
FP270_pages.5.indd 76
extraction practices in place within organisations across all sectors. By offering guidance and advice on systems and equipment available, as well as possible modifications to existing systems plus scheduling regular testing, ITS will help organisations to achieve compliance with COSHH regulations. With over 30 years’ experience in ventilation and extraction systems, Impact Technical Services is perfectly placed to assess such systems and to recommend cost-effective and efficient solutions. Tony Bosworth, ITS operations director, says: “The Health and Safety Executive’s campaign is a timely reminder of the importance of ensuring your workforce is safe. “We urge employers to remember that it is law to protect your staff and you could face a hefty fine if sufficient extraction is not in place and regularly tested. “Our free, no obligation offer is the perfect way to ensure your company is compliant. Together we can help to make Great Britain a safer place to work.” Join the conversation on the HSE’s campaign on Twitter at #helpgbworkwell. impacttechnicalservices.co.uk

New brass barbed expansion inserts for wood
The Insert Company has recently introduced another range of brass inserts to complement its extensive range of brass inserts that are already on offer. The new barbed expansion range of inserts offer high load capacity into wood and fibreboard and can even been used in soft plastics and composites. The simple installation method of this insert is very cost effective, just position the insert in the hole then push in – either manually or automatically. This enables the

unique barbed knurl to grip into the plastic, and then once in position the mating screw will expand the insert and firmly lock it into the base material. The impressive barbed knurl, coupled with the expansion characteristics, ensure this insert offers an excellent level of performance for a very short installation time. It is available from stock in thread sizes from M4, M5, M6, M8 and M10. 0121 439 7329 theinsertcompany.com

Small businesses voice crime concerns New research from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has found 38% of small firms are not reporting crimes against their business because they do not think it would lead to a successful prosecution. The FSB findings call into question the accuracy of the current crime statistics and suggest low levels of trust in the ability of the police to deal with business crime among small businesses. Nearly a quarter of smaller business owners (24%) do not report any crimes committed against their business. When asked why, most said they felt reporting it would not achieve anything positive (46%). This figure has not changed in six years, highlighting an ongoing lack of confidence in the authority’s ability to address business crime over that period, despite the launch of Police and Crime Commissioners (PCC) in 2012. These worrying findings come as candidates seeking to become PCCs set out their stall to voters. The FSB has produced a manifesto that urges candidates to put business crime at the heart of their plans to ensure this issue is finally addressed. Business crime acts as a barrier to growth for the UK’s 5.4m small businesses and in the worst cases, puts entrepreneurs out of business. Mike Cherry, national chairman at FSB, says: “While the new definition of ‘business crime’ adopted by the police in April 2015 is a real step forward, there is still a long way to go in
understanding and addressing the true extent of the problem. Crime affects all businesses, but it impacts smaller firms the hardest as they cannot absorb the unexpected costs. The fact that businesses are not reporting crimes shows a real breakdown in trust and confidence in the police.” Other frequent responses from business owners explaining why they did not report business crime included: the belief that police would not be able to find the criminals or achieve a successful prosecution (38%), and that reporting crime was too time consuming (26%). FSB research also found a third of small businesses thought business crime was increasing in their area. This stands in stark contrast to the Government’s Commercial Victimisation Survey last year which claimed business crime was decreasing. Coupled with the number of businesses that do not report crime, it is clear that Government statistics may not be reflecting the reality experienced by many firms. Two thirds (66%) of those surveyed by FSB have been a victim of cyber crime in the last two years, just under half (48%) have been a victim of non-cyber crime, and 53% have been a victim of both. On average, those affected have been a victim of cyber crime four times and non-cyber crimes three times. Businesses have made a concerted effort to improve their security. Two-fifths (41%) of businesses have installed or upgraded a security system to protect their business, an increase of 25% since 2010. But security will only do
How would your business react to a crime committed against it? so much. The Government and police need a stronger focus on business crime. Cyber security is on the increase and is therefore an area of particular concern for small firms. As a result, it is being taken even more seriously, with 80% of small firms protecting their IT systems with computer security software. Only 3% of small firms reported not putting any cyber security measures in place. Mike Cherry, continues: “With the average cost of crime to a business now at £5898, and instances of cyber crime on the rise, there is a real necessity to get a handle on this. “FSB members call on candidates for PCCs standing in elections across England in May to make combating business crime a central theme in their long-term plans. We are issuing our PCC manifesto today, in the hope we can forge a better relationship between police and businesses once and for all,” he concludes. fsb.org.uk

Occupational Awards issues first certificates Occupational Awards Ltd, a new awarding organisation that develops and awards regulated qualifications across a range of sectors, has issued the first batch of certificates for learners of its first approved centre, Didac Limited. OAL has been working closely with employers, colleges and training providers since its set up in May 2015 to deliver high impact qualifications which are needed to support improved employee performance and business growth. This service is delivered with OAL’s Approved Centres like Didac. Didac is a specialist training provider to the furniture, wood and merchanting sector and achieved approved centre status with OAL in August 2015. The company provides a range of tailored services and programmes to meet employer and learners’ needs, including funded programmes such as apprenticeships, unemployed workplace programmes and commercial programmes such as wood machine training, health & safety, and industrial training. OAL has announced that seven of Didac’s learners have achieved a number of qualifications and unit credits such as: • Jack Stokes, an apprentice at East Brothers, Wiltshire, has achieved the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Sawmilling and the Level 2 Award in Timber and Panel Products and their Uses qualifications. • Four learners have achieved the Level 2 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace qualification from MWC Group, Wiltshire.
• Two learners have achieved the Level 3 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace qualification from MWC Group, Wiltshire. All Occupational Awards industry qualifications are developed in conjunction with National Occupational Standards (NOS), the foundation for vocational skills in the workplace. Vocational qualifications have NOS at their heart and are used to define the competencies an individual worker requires in order to do their job effectively and productively. NOS are developed by employers in the industry, for the industry. Jon Gibson, MD at Didac, says: “Didac is pleased that these are the first cohort of learners to achieve their qualifications with Occupational Awards Ltd. As a specialist provider, it is important to offer employers and learners suitable and relevant qualifications to meet their individual and business needs.” Lisa Williamson, MD at Occupational Awards, comments: “OAL is very pleased to award these qualifications to all learners. It is a great achievement for Didac as a centre and OAL as a new awarding organisation. “If you are an employer or training provider and have identified a need for qualifications that is not being met, or you just want to begin working with a regulated awarding organisation with a difference, please get in touch and we’ll help you find the right solution.” owards.co.uk didac.co.uk

Compiled using data publicly available from the Office for National Statistics and HM Customs and Revenue, FIRA’s latest statistical digest is one of the most reliable records available of today’s industry, covering its sub-sectors across a range of contract, office and domestic product groups.
Latest FIRA statistics digest highlights recovery in manufacturing Consumer expenditure on furniture and furnishings was almost £14b in 2014 – an 8% increase from 2011, fuelled by significant growth in 2014 which was 7% greater than 2013. Furniture and furnishings repair spend, having reached £59m in 2012 – a significant recovery after a very tough year in 2010 – dropped to just £23m in 2014. However, although anecdotal evidence suggests otherwise, the true value may be hidden within other statistics. The average weekly retail internet sales for all products grew to £719m in 2014. As such, in December 2014 the internet accounted for almost 12.8% of all retail sales, compared with 11.8% in the same month the previous year. Comparable values in the household goods sector were much smaller – only 5% of all internet sales are attributable to the sector (2% for furniture and furnishings). Turnover Total provisional turnover for all UK furniture manufacturing in 2014 was £7.4b – 6.1% higher than in 2013, and 14.6% higher than in 2011. This represents a significant recovery, with the largest increases occurring in 2013 and 2014. Furniture manufacturing in 2014 represented 1.4% of the UK’s total manufacturing turnover. The total number of furniture
Furniture exports from the UK, 2014
FP270_pages.5.indd 84
manufacturers in 2014 was 5932. This number has gradually declined since 2011 (by 3.2%), with the most notable decrease occurring in 2012/13 (1.9%). Despite 2014 turnover being 1.4% of the total for UK manufacturing, the furniture sector employed 2.9% of all UK manufacturing personnel (71,000). This is estimated to have equated to 2.4% of the UK manufacturing wage bill. The number of employees appeared, against general employment trends, to have dropped significantly from 2013 to 2014. This may not be the true position due to the provisional nature of the data – the 83,000 figure for 2013 may be a better reflection of the situation. There has been a 6% increase in office and shop furniture manufacturing turnover since 2011. Whilst 2014 turnover was estimated to be just over £2b, there was no increase in value compared with the previous year. Kitchen furniture manufacturing turnover had historically fallen significantly, from a high of £1.7b in 2008 to a low of £1.1b in 2011. After a couple of years of comparatively poor performance the corner appears to have been turned – turnover in 2014 increased to £1.7b, matching the sector’s 2008 high. This represents a 50% increase since 2011 and a 22% increase over the previous year.
Sub-sectors The mattress sub-sector has tended to be relatively stable compared with its counterparts, but over recent years has exhibited substantial growth. Manufacturing turnover has continued to increase since 2011, reaching £0.66b in 2014, a 29% increase over the period. The majority of this increase (20%) occurred between 2011 and 2013, although 2014 still saw a very healthy 7.1% increase over the previous year. Other furniture, which comprises all items not previously mentioned, plus parts, has grown less significantly. 2013 saw a slight recovery to £2.92b, and this recovery continued into 2014 when turnover reached £2.99b (a 2.5% increase on the previous year). Imports In 2014, imports rose to £4.8b from £4.6b the previous year, representing 47% of the home market. This home market, based on UK manufacturing sales, export and import data, was estimated to be £10.2b. Annual imports are predicted to be close to the £5b mark by the end of 2015. The majority of imports (almost £1.6b) originated from China, and its share of this market, having dropped slightly to 32% in 2013, recovered to 33% in 2014. Italy remained the second largest exporter of furniture to the UK, with its share of the import market remaining at 11%. Poland overhauled Germany in the league table and supplied 10% of all imports (Germany supplied 9%). Other changes in the hierarchy saw the Czech Republic, Lithuania and Spain leapfrog France, and Brazil and Portugal appeared in the top 15 for the first time, at the expense of Sweden and Slovakia. Imports from the US appear to have fallen dramatically, from £141m in 2013 to £55m in 2014. Exports Furniture exports have remained relatively static since 2011, although the provisional £930m figure for 2014 is an improvement of 10% on the previous year. Initial
by Dr Peter Beele
indications for 2015 suggest that this improvement in export performance may not be sustained, and could fall back to about £867m. The UK export market traditionally targets the Republic of Ireland and the US, although in 2014 France and Germany both received 10% of UK exports, and the US only 9%. The figure for the Republic of Ireland was 19%, compared with 17% the previous year, and equating to £166m. Exports to the EC totalled £531m in 2014 – an increase of £21m. Exports to the UAE, having grown in value the previous year, fell from £38m to £30m, and Russia – as might be expected due to its current economic position – only received £19m worth of furniture. As a result, like China, it dropped out of the top 10 export destinations. Trade gaps The negative trade gap continued to widen, with increases in imports outstripping any small increases in exports. It reached £3.84b in 2014, and could exceed £4b by the end of 2015. The negative trade gap with China, the largest for the sector, increased to £1.57b. The main positive trade gap – as in previous years – was with the Republic of Ireland, which increased from £122m in 2014 to £141m in 2014. After this, there was a number of countries with which the UK benefited from much smaller positive trade gaps in 2014, starting with the US at £31m, and followed by the UAE at £22m (although this was at £30m the previous year). In 2013 it was noted that the trade gap with the US became negative for the first time in a number of years. The position, due to a decrease in imports from this country, has been reversed, and there was a positive trade surplus in 2014 of £31m. The full report is available free to FIRA members, and for £300 otherwise. The contents of the report are believed to be correct at the time of publication, but cannot be guaranteed. 01438 777700 fira.co.uk

Technology a comfort for skills-short furniture manufacturers UK furniture manufacturers struggling to fill 750,000 vacant positions can take comfort in their business-critical technology systems, to provide relief from an industry-wide skills shortage. That’s the message from ERP developer K3 Syspro at a time when, despite an increase in turnover of 11% over the last four years, Britain’s furniture manufacturers face the challenge of filling thousands of vacant positions and recovering from £10b worth of missed opportunities and rising wages, a figure cited by PwC. According to K3 Syspro, utilising the data held in mission-critical systems such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) applications, and analysing it the right way, can empower existing employees and help to fill the gap of talent that the sector is currently faced with. K3 Syspro managing director, Cathie Hall explains: “We all know there is a skills gap across the manufacturing sector and the furniture sector has been particularly hit by this. The problem is not going away for a while but with the right use of technology, furniture manufacturers can still increase productivity and make the most of new opportunities, even if they are struggling to build an extensive workforce.” Furniture businesses are being urged to lean on their business applications in order to drive efficiency and productivity during uncertain times. For example, businesses can utilise transactional data held in their ERP systems,
to better understand customer buying habits, improve production efficiencies and empower existing workforces with greater intelligence. This means that any gaps in a workforce’s production knowledge can be filled by automating processes. Production scheduling can help employees to better plan and prepare for demand, while regularly analysing inventory levels can demonstrate to purchase managers where raw material investment is being wasted. This insight can enable furniture manufacturers to upskill existing workforces, empower and motivate their staff, and comfort the blow currently being caused by the skills shortage. Cathie continues: “Existing technology can not only help to streamline processes and increase productivity, but it can also educate manufacturers. “By collecting and interpreting data, furniture manufacturers can gain valuable insight across their entire supply chains, from tracking orders over time to detailed production scheduling, both of which help staff identify seasonal peaks ahead of time, ensuring that when the order books enjoy an upturn, productivity doesn’t suffer due to a lack of skills, and the rise in demand can be successfully met.” The advice from K3 Syspro comes as 31.6% of delegates at the EEF’s National Manufacturing Conference 2016, held last month, cited a lack of skills as the single biggest barrier to increasing productivity in UK manufacturing. However, while the survey was a cause for concern for some,
Increasing productivity when many companies have staff vacancies is an ongoing challenge – ERP can help achieve that growth a further 51% of those surveyed at the event stated that they felt that while productivity may be lagging, technology is key to remedying this. “There is no doubt that technology will prove key in overcoming the long term challenges facing UK manufacturing, however for some businesses, it is the here and now which is a more pressing issue. By better utilising the technology already available to furniture manufacturers they can not only improve productivity, but also really take advantage of the current upturn across the sector.” Cathie Hall concludes.

We will never know whether the processors of flexible materials would still be cutting these materials manually with high-cost, error-prone and laborious manual operations to this very day had it not been for H Joseph Gerber. The author says that the automatic cutting of textiles of all sorts in its state-of-the-art form today using equipment made by a whole series of system providers for a multitude of finished products – all, and many more trendsetting technology inventions, go back to him – Heinz Joseph Gerber.
New biography looks at the life of the unique H Joseph Gerber David J Gerber, The Inventor’s Dilemma – The Remarkable Life of H Joseph Gerber, published by Yale University Press, ISBN: 9780300123500
Fashion drawings by Heinz Joseph ‘Joe’ Gerber dating back to the 1940s, when the teenager was still trained by a head designer his native town of Vienna David J Gerber has published the biography of his father’s life entitled The Inventor’s Dilemma – The Remarkable Life of H Joseph Gerber. Born in Vienna, H Joseph Gerber escaped from demise under the Nazi regime aged 16 in 1940. After emigrating to the USA his stellar journey began. When he died in 1996, an amzing 677 patents had been filed under his name. The Smithsonian Museum in Washington even dedicates a whole department to his exhibits. David Gerber has undertaken meticulous research, held interviews with leading personalities from the industries whose processes were decisively improved – and often revolutionised by – Joe Gerber. David also spoke to journalists and his father’s companions. Like Irving Stone in his Michelangelo portrait, David Gerber tells us eloquently and consistently what was so extraordinary about H Joseph Gerber’s life – as a creative mind and inventor, as a family man – and also as an entrepreneur. Just a two hour’s drive away from the place he

arrived as a refugee in New England, in Hartford, Connecticut, he laid the foundation for his technology companies. Represented in 130 countries around the globe, Gerber Scientific Inc, Gerber Technology, Gerber Products and their subsidiaries as well as spin-offs, specialise in niche technology solutions and count among the global market leaders in their respective fields. Despite being the inventor’s son, David Gerber has managed to strike the right balance of impartiality in his descriptions. Plenty of anecdotal reference makes us ponder and often also smile. The Inventor’s Dilemma is a volume somewhere between specialist literature and educational entertainment – a contemporary document. Readers do not have to be associated with textile processing to be fascinated by David Gerber‘s book, but for those with a connection to this industry and with a passion for smart technologies, The Inventor’s Dilemma falls into the must-read category and, what’s more, it is also pleasant reading.
David Gerber, award-winning author of legal text books in the USA, writes about the Father of Automation – his father
