www.furnitureproduction.net

It’s good to see that 2016 has finally kicked into gear for the furniture and joinery industry – it seemed a rather prolonged hibernation this year, but, with an early Easter, and good weather, I feel there’s a spring in our collective step once more. Although there are more to come in the next month or so, over the last few weeks the traditional round of open house events have got under way, with positive reports from Biesse recently and Daltons Wadkin and Homag this month. We also take a look forward to Felder’s open house, taking place in mid-April, as well as the Leitz Tooling timber windows seminar in Leeds on the 20th. All this activity serves to underline the efforts companies are going to in order to serve their customers, and we should definitely attend and take advantage of that all-important one-to-one time offered by these companies. Looking forward to later this year, we are already counting down the months before the industry’s biggest meeting point, the W16 and Elements event, taking place at the NEC, Birmingham in October. At Furniture & Joinery Production, our plans are well under way, and many of the industry’s key players have committed to exhibiting their latest products and services. All being well, we should have a couple of important announcements to tell readers and advertisers next month regarding our evolving relationship with the show organiser, Montgomery. Congratulations, by the way, to the organiser’s Lisa Campagnola, who has been promoted to event director, recognising her sterling work thus far.

I urge all those who are considering attending the event to begin looking for lodgings today, as we found it difficult to book into our normal abode this time around. And, for potential exhibitors, if you haven’t already spoken with Lisa, I recommend doing so before the last of the the better positions are taken by your competitors! Regarding this issue, we have installations at companies such as Starbank, Neville Johnson, Astabridge, Haynes Guitars, Westbridge and B2B Exhibitions, among others. Add to that a host of new products, event reports and previews, news and trade services, plus much more on our class-leading website, and it amounts to a veritable feast for the those looking to ‘genup’ on the latest techniques and supplies.

BWF sets sights on being a bit more noughty as it targets 1000 members A big recruitment drive and restructuring of training services is being planned within the joinery manufacturing and woodworking industry, with the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) setting an ambitious target to attract another 300 firms into membership. To spearhead the initiative, Dave Campbell has been promoted to become the BWF’s new membership and training director, while Jon Gorf has also joined as a highly experienced technical consultant to bolster the BWF’s technical support to members. The restructuring was triggered in part by the death earlier this year of Michael Lee, the BWF’s

well known membership director, but also reflects the BWF’s ambitions to grow its influence as it increasingly engages with government and policy makers. Iain McIlwee, chief executive of the BWF, says: “To achieve the next level of growth and push on to that magic 1,000 members, we have to look at how the BWF evolves its services and training support, both physically and digitally. This will involve a strategic review of the Woodworking Industry Training Forum (WIT Forum), the Toolkit business support services we provide to members and our membership engagement process. “The market faces huge uncertainty in the coming months and potentially beyond. We need to be aware of the growing complexity of regionalisation and digitalisation. We also face radical changes in the way apprenticeships and training are funded and delivered, so the industry needs strong leadership at this time. “In Dave we have an energetic and dedicated man who has shown his commitment to the BWF’s membership time and time again over the past seven years. Jon brings immense knowledge to our technical team. His recent experience at the coal-face, combined with his passion for the industry, is exactly what we

need.” Dave Campbell says: “BWF members are honest, hard-working companies, up against it at times due to the constantly fluctuating regulatory environment and inadequacies in the supply chain. My role now is to ensure they receive the support and added value services they need to thrive. BWF membership is a fundamental business prerequisite for any growing business in this industry.” Jon Gorf is the former managing director of Parker Joinery, and has more than 20 years of technical knowledge in all aspects of timber and its related products. Jon says: “My mission is to provide practical, specialist advice and guidance to other companies which are facing many of the same technical challenges around timber windows, doors, staircases and internal fittings as I have seen over my career in this industry. I will also be promoting health and safety and manufacturing advice to BWF members.” The BWF currently has 700 members drawn from manufacturers, distributors and installers of timber doors, windows, conservatories, staircases, all forms of interior and architectural joinery as well as suppliers to the industry. bwf.org.uk

David Clouting updates industry on its decorative film options In a world with a constantly changing landscape, it is time to apply today’s technologies for tomorrow’s society. Everything about ourselves today is different to that of 50 years ago, and yet many still build using the same 50-year-old materials. We are all becoming more savvy on our social responsibility and good design. To support this movement, well known company surfacing supplier firm, David Clouting, held a design and innovation seminar in April for Interior Film and Deco Foil on the two top floors of London’s Gherkin building. The company flew in one of the top designers for LG Hausys to share his inspirations and vision. The audience was a mixture of some of the best architectural practices, interior designers and fit-out companies in London. These events are successful at triggering the thought process through the whole design team – the architect, the contractor and the end-user staff etc – to a more collaborative approach to occupied space. The seminar spoke of new organic textures inspired by nature, and how refacing – in place of replacing – can meet all expectations of finish, seeing the revival of PVC, demonstrating new technologies for Super Matt and Gloss with finger-free finishes, not forgetting air-free selfadhesive systems. The event was deemed a huge success and

much credit goes to the attendees. The feedback was also very positive, some of which is reported below: “Thanks for the event last week. We really enjoyed it.” “It was fantastic! Thank you for the invitation. We had such a good time!” “Thank you for yesterday’s seminar it was really nice to see the product, and of course, I cannot put my words to the fantastic choice of the venue!” “Was really nice meeting you yesterday and thank you again for the invitation, I really enjoyed the event and I am really interested in using the products.” “Very well organised; Scott was a natural master of ceremonies; we learnt more product knowledge from the talks and lastly, did some good networking. So, all in all, a great success.” “Just wanted to email to say thank you for the hospitality and informative and interesting seminar, It was an amazing venue which showcased your products in real style” “Catch up later but I just wanted to congratulate you on a very successful event last night.” “It was a great event, not just the venue but the presentation was amazing. The short videos of the trend concepts were very impressive” 01376 518037 davidclouting.co.uk

Ney Spring At Home exhibition a resounding success As one of the country’s leading woodworking machinery and materials suppliers, Ney held its Spring At Home show in April at its impressive, extensive Coventry headquarters. The show proved a resounding success with visitors coming from across the UK to discover the diversity of machinery and equipment options available: from CNC machines, edgebanding machines, sanding and finishing, saws and sizing, foil coating and pressing as well as traditional machines, hand tools and packaging equipment. In addition of course, Ney is renowned for its

breadth of materials and components. Visitors attending remarked how impressive the range has become in recent times and Ney has to be considered as a one-stop-shop for the majority of standard products nowadays. In terms of materials currently available: Ney’s edging and foils offer is rightly recognised as being comprehensive, well specified and typically well stocked. In addition, the current components offer includes: drawer systems, kitchen storage, handles, hinges and lift systems, door systems, bedroom storage and lighting. So taking the machinery and materials options together, when Ney puts on an event in its

substantial 120,000 sq ft premises, its akin to a well-balanced trade show with a good range of the majority of products needs for mainstream manufacturers. Managing director Shahana Kishver, says: “The attendance on all three days was good and it was great to see our existing customers as well as a healthy number of new customers coming from all corners of the UK and Ireland. As we are so centrally-located in Coventry, Ney today has become the ideal one-stop-shop and we are seeing our client base growing in geographical terms.” Visitors also commented on how easy Ney

is to work with. “We offer our customers a full service and financial support. The high number of visitors proved this. Customers like our hospitality and relaxing atmosphere to discuss productivity improvements with our technical specialists.” The focus of the Spring At Home event was on seamless edgebanding – a subject which proved very popular with visitors. During the event, there were workshop sessions looking at how to achieve seamless edgebanding featuring Ney’s impressive flagship edgebander from EBM which features EVA, PUR and Airtronic seamless edging. The quality of the EBM Airtronic edgebander spoke for itself. Ney chairman Gerd Ney, says: “The significant optical quality makes Airtronic by EBM affordable for small- to medium-sized shops.

The impressive Ney showrooms “The process of edging with Airtronic achieves consistent results that can be compared with those of much more expensive laser aggregates and this has been independently confirmed by the three top producers of fusion edgebanding after extensive testing. “It has an extremely short heat-up time of three minutes, has low energy and air consumption and intelligent operating concept.” In addition, the entry-level KDP 100 range proved a considerable draw to visitors as it now has the added ability of EVA, PUR and Airtronic application. The new extended showroom also enabled visitors to see even more of Ney’s extensive range of components and materials, some of which are featured on this page. 02476 308100 www.ney.co.uk

Homag’s FKF 200 solutions for panel lamination Launched in autumn 2014, the Homag Optimat FKF 200 is the preconfigured entrylevel solution for single-sided laminating of board materials and for the production of lightweight panels. New options announced at Ligna 2015 have increased the flexibility and economical processing of many different materials. Operated in a throughfeed format, the Optimat FKF 200 can be used to bond face materials such as laminates, gloss sheets, plys, veneers to all kinds of substrates including chipboard, MDF, HDF, blockboard etc. It features a special quick change system which enables the adhesive application roller to be easily and quickly changed. In addition, the dosing roller speed and temperature are steplessly adjustable. In standard specification, the FKF 200 features a 3m roller conveyor, a PUR glue application unit, a 5m lay-up roller conveyor, a laminating calender and an outfeed roller conveyor. Options include an unwinding station, a storage shelf with equipment for veneer sheets, a glue pre-melter, workpiece cleaning

FP271_pages.indd 11

The Homag FKF 200 series delivers completeLine surface lamination with rotating or sword brush, workpiece pre-heating and glue application control. FKF 200 profiLine with PUR application roller unit With the FKF 200 profiLine series, Homag offers an automated solution for the lamination of sheet and coil material. Based on the FKF 200 range of modular units, the profiLine surface laminating machine is capable of practically unmanned sheet lamination. Using a newly-developed infeed system, firstly the sheet material is separated, aligned and cleaned. It is then guided towards the ready-glued workpiece without a feed stop. With the cleaning stations, this solution is ideally suited to high-gloss processing of substrate material. The use of individual drive sections means that workpieces can

be processed continuously or with a small gap to allow separation, using either a manual or an automated system. The profiLine features a 4m infeed conveyor, a 7m lay-up conveyor and a 3m out-feed roller conveyor. With the easy to operate powerTouch control, the profiLine FKF 200 can be upgraded using a sanding machine and/or handling system from the Homag Group. FKF 200 profiLine with nozzle application reacTec The FKF 200 profiLine with nozzle application reacTec enables single-sided coating and edge wrapping using the reacTec inline method. Previously the reserve of top end industrial producers, the completeLine method is now economically viable for mediumsized enterprises thanks to the

new FKF 200 profiLine with nozzle application reacTec. The face and edges are laminated with material off the coil in a single work step. The excess material is trimmed in line with a special processing unit. The integrated double unwinding station allows coil changeover without interruption, enabling continuous production and a high output. The shaftless fixtures at the unwinding station enable fast, efficient and convenient changeover of coil material. It features simple resetting for EVA or PO adhesives and also has the ability to handle continuous processing of pre-coated coil material. The FKF range of machinery from Homag opens up the possibilities for cost-effective laminating at all levels of industry and with the flexible payment plans that are available from Homag Finance, these machines have never been so affordable. For more information or a demonstration of the Homag FKF 200 laminating machines, contact Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. homag-uk.co.uk

Lectra showcases 3D technology at furniture industry seminar Lectra, the world leader in integrated technology solutions dedicated to industries using fabrics, leather, technical textiles and composite materials, recently hosted an event to feature the latest technology for the furniture industry at the Furniture Makers’ Hall in London. Attracting a mix of upholstered furniture manufacturers, trade and press, the event focused on current market trends and explored how furniture companies can keep pace with this dynamic and increasingly competitive market. Lectra says that manufacturers in the UK are increasingly turning to technology to enable the production of greater volumes, whilst reducing costs. Creating efficiencies in order to meet these production demands, whilst offering more choice to the consumer, is critical to a company’s ability to improve its bottom line. The event examined how technology can generate efficiency gains in the furniture manufacturing process, from design and product development, to production. “The UK is one of the few countries seeing a significant rebound in the upholstered furniture market and we forecast that it will continue in this growth phase, 2% each year, until at least 2018,” confirms Giovanna Castellina, leading expert from the Centre for Industrial Studies (CSIL). “Competition in this sector remains stiff, with developing countries

Jean-Patrice Gros, director of Lectra Northern Europe and UK

continuing to invest in new manufacturing facilities, as well as improving their design capabilities,” she continues. Such a global threat has led to UK companies turning to more agile methods to seek quicker and more effective new product development cycles in order to remain responsive to consumer demands. 3D virtual prototyping solution, was highlighted at the event to show the audience how to significantly shorten lead time: up to 30% in preparing design reviews and 50% in physical prototyping. “Regardless of the scale of a business or the volume of production, the right technology, support, and expertise is absolutely critical to ensuring speed to market,

an effective design to cost and design to manufacturing model, and ultimately a profitable and competitive business. “Lectra is proud to be able to support so many furniture manufacturers in the UK, Northern Europe and also globally,” explains Jean-Patrice Gros, director of Lectra Northern Europe and UK. lectra.com

Orangebox and FIRA collaborate on circular economy at CDW The Furniture Industry Research Associations’ recently initiated Circular Economy project is benefiting from an important collaboration with Orangebox. The project challenges the prevailing economic model of ‘take-make-consume-dispose’ and aims to explore the opportunities of

FP271_pages.indd 12

a more sustainable manufacturing model which advocates a restorative and regenerative approach to the use of resources. In effect, materials should be used and re-used as much as possible. The work with Orangebox, which will be presented at two Clerkenwell Design Week sessions on 25th

and 26th May 2016, explores the environmental and economic potential of remanufactured compared to brand new furniture. This is a critical element of the project, which needs to demonstrate to industry that a circular approach to manufacturing, driven initially by sustainable

design, is the way forward. The workshops, at the Orangebox showroom, will commence with a presentation on the project followed by an opportunity for the audience to put forward its own ideas on the Circular Economy concept including its drivers and blockages. This input will be invaluable as FIRA continues to work on other elements within the project including a furniture resource exchange platform; a Circular Economy task force for the UK furniture industry; resource hotspot analyses; a reuse and remanufacturing standard and a potential product stewardship framework and extended producer responsibility scheme. The timings are Wednesday 25th May at 3pm and Thursday 26th May at 11am. To book a place, visit FIRA’s website. fira.co.uk/training

State-of-the-art throughfeed presses The Joos DLP series sets the standard for throughfeed presses.

Joos quality presses – solutions for companies of all sizes Simon Brooks again: “The DLP 150 is both economic and ecological, two key benefits in today’s cost-conscious, environmentallyaware world. Being a throughfeed machine, it is ideal for inclusion in a production line to deliver a continuous working process.” Featuring state-of-the-art heating technology, the DLP 150 has accurate control devices to ensure safe and cost-effective production. It is the perfect machine for mid to large veneering or door manufacturing businesses wanting a reliable solution to increase their

productivity whilst maintaining the highest levels of quality. A solid investment Robustly engineered and specifically designed for the woodworking arena, Joos presses continue to set new standards. “Once you have seen a Joos press in action, you will understand why it is an investment that will pay dividends over and over again,” concludes Simon Brooks. Combining quality and technology Furniture manufacturers know the Morbidelli brand as a reference point for high performance drilling and routing CNC machining centres. The Author M range offers some of the best technological knowhow from the Morbidelli brand through highly-productive and flexible machining solutions giving many capabilities to adapt to the different industry standards required by the manufacturing environment. The constant and continuous development of the Author M range has led to the introduction of important innovations such as the automatic TV Flexmatic worktable that presents a new concept – instant locking of the suction cups directly to the bar without the need of pre-installed supports. This solution allows the use of suction cups in a variable number, on each bar according to the size and shape of the piece to be processed. With no room for errors, the automatic detection of suction cups number and position on the bars guarantees the best precision and quick set-up in any situation. With stability of panels during the working phase thanks to the mechanical locking of suction cups on the bars, the system is also ideal for the use of high holding pneumatic clamps when the size and type of the pieces require it. These innovations combined with the sturdy structure and mobile gantry, are designed to ensure maximum rigidity. With the five-axis machining unit ideal for any type of machining, and its efficient safety systems, Author M is a real concentration of technology for those who are looking for highquality standards. scmgroup.com

Dutch industrial vacuum range proves its worth

The Dutch industrial vacuum product range from Verhagen Leiden, newly available in the UK via sole agent, Industar, looks really set to prove its worth in the woodworking sector. Launched in the UK a few months ago, Yorkshire-based Industar, says the feedback about the vacuum is really positive and everyone who has trialled it, comments on its superior performance. An early customer to purchase the Verhagen F3313 Industrial and Turbo model, Christopher Shaw, director of Essex-based Garner and Shaw, says that since investing in the vacuum he has been very impressed at how easy it is to use and its overall performance. Operating in the architectural and wood finishing sector, Garner and Shaw has been providing specialist wood spraying services to architects, door manufacturers, joinery companies and interior designers for over 30 years. With a 32-strong workforce employed over two sites, Mr Shaw takes his responsibilities to create a safe working environment seriously, making the removal of waste from dust and wood shavings a key priority. When looking to purchase a new industrial cleaner he was impressed by the features and cleaning ability of the Verhagen F3313 model and delighted with its performance. He says: “The powerful suction ensures a

FP271_pages.indd 17

clean environment each and every time and I would be happy to recommend it and Industar to anyone operating in the woodworking industry, where waste is an issue.” Verhagen Leiden has been established for over 50 years and its name is synonymous with quality in its native Netherlands. The product range is well known for its durability and low maintenance requirements. Given the onerous

health and safety requirements within the woodworking industry and the necessity to keep the environment dust-free, Verhagen Leiden products have a ready-made market here, says Industar director, Ad Klabbers, also from the Netherlands. He says: “The Verhagen Leiden range offers superb quality. I have grown up with the brand back home where it is a household name in the Netherlands. When we were selecting an industrial vacuum range to promote in the UK, this brand stands head and shoulders above the rest in terms of its performance and durability. It also comes with a range of additional attachments to make it particularly adaptable for most workplaces, able to penetrate the tightest corners where dust may collect. “Verhagen Leiden products can be used to quickly clean surfaces or as aspiration for production machines because they are equipped with the best filters in the market to ensure the highest possible filtration. “We are so convinced of the product’s performance and its particular suitability for the woodworking sector that we will provide a noobligation, free demonstration for any company that is interested to put one of our products to the test in its own workshop. “We believe it is by far the best industrial vacuum cleaner on the market today.” industar.co.uk

Using edging as a design element When applied with a bit of thought, an edging in a contrasting colour can achieve great design effects, as Ostermann seeks to demonstrate.

3D acrylic LED Ostermann’s customers are able to quickly find edgings to match the product ranges from over 70 board manufacturers, using the quick search facility in the Ostermann Online Shop or via Ostermann’s cross-reference list. But why does an edging always have to be invisible? Sometimes it really pays off to use edgings with a contrasting colour, pattern or structure to achieve impressive design effects. Edgings in contrasting colours One good way of using edgings to create a particular look is to combine plain panel surfaces with wood-patterned edgings or vice versa. And this is true of all furniture – not just children’s play things. Living room, bedroom and kitchen furniture can also benefit from the occasional use of contrasting colours on a narrow edge. This helps to break-up the monotone appearance of the particular surface. The furniture becomes much more individualised.

Fantasy decors

FP271_pages.indd 22

Fantasy decors Those preferring things a little more discrete can combine monochrome fantasy decors, such as the high-gloss ABS edgings Esprit black, Linen or Serpentin Blanc with plain surfaces in high-gloss white, grey or black. This gives the furniture an individualistic flourish, augmenting the uniqueness of character and the overall highgrade impression exuded by the piece.

3D acrylic edgings Great designer effects can also be achieved with 3D acrylic edgings. The edgings have a threedimensional effect, as the decor, which is printed at the back, can be seen through the transparent acrylic layer. Applying 1mm-thick 3D acrylic edging to a contrastingly-coloured board will create an attractive optical zero bondline, even if only using a conventional edgebanding machine.

Aluminium edgings Aluminium edgings match practically any panel surface. Used in kitchens, they provide a sophisticated complement to the metallic surfaces of built-in appliances, sinks and taps. With their very high impact and abrasion resistance, they also provide an ideal edging for furniture designed to meet special requirements. Instead of using matching materials for skirting, try using wide ABS edgings with a real aluminium finish to give kitchen furniture a really special look.

3D acrylic LED Special 3D acrylic LED edgings, such as the high-gloss, translucent 3D acrylic LED edgings Stripe in white-stainless steel or the high-gloss, translucent 3D acrylic LED edgings lines in white/ black can be backlit with LED strips. A recess for the LED strip has to be milled underneath the edging. The edging can then be applied as normal. The indirect lighting effect along the edges enables this type of furniture to create an attractive effect. ostermann.eu

ADVERTORIAL 23

AKZONOBEL AT FOREFRONT OF FORMALDEHYDE FREE OPTIONS Being caught out is never a good thing. Deadlines approach and some of us are prone to burying issues or stalling on the inevitable. Never a good idea.

In 2014 formaldehyde was reclassified as a Carcinogen Category 1B. As a Category 1 carcinogen, the use of formaldehyde is now about to be regulated by the Carcinogen and Mutagen Directive in EU workplaces. The central concept of this prime directive is ‘protection of workers against risks to their health and safety, including the prevention of such risks, arising or likely to arise from exposure to carcinogens or mutagens at work’. The Commission responsible expanded the transition period until 1st January 2016. It begs the questions, are we ready to fully comply with the new classification and are the products out there? AkzoNobel is a leading global paints and adhesives company and a major producer of specialty chemicals. They supply industries and consumers worldwide with innovative products and sustainable technologies designed to meet the growing demands of our fast-changing planet. Bearing in mind the EU workplace changes that are about to be foisted on a host of manufacturing sectors, AkzoNobel are more than ready to meet the challenge head-on with a range of products that addresses the impending deadline, providing a range of solutions to meet and surpass the new industry-wide standards. FF from AkzoNobel is a new series of acidcuring products delivering high-quality results without the use of formaldehyde. It’s a system that’s Formaldehyde-Free, and isocyanate-free with no odor to the end user on either coated furniture or fittings. FF has all the same high-quality attributes as

traditional Acid-curing and PU Alkyd products with no yellowing. It provides excellent adhesion, drying, and stacking properties together with providing simple cleaning routines for the production line and equipment. FF has good spray application and an extended pot-life of five days and is compatible with the AkzoNobel tinting system. FF also has excellent adhesion to wooden substrates including UV primed surfaces. Drying, viscosity and gloss can easily be adjusted with different additives. LignuPro™ Free, a new bonding system from AkzoNobel is also formaldehyde and isocyanate free. This new bonding technology has hard glue line properties similar to the thermosetting Urea Formaldehyde adhesive and offers a system aimed directly at furniture manufacturers. LignuPro™ Free veneering offers great benefits to strengthen competiveness for furniture manufacturers by supplying a formaldehyde and isocyanate free glue line, together with high-bonding performance, reducing veneer to board delamination and edge to edge glue line opening during the gluing process providing an optimal result. LignuPro™ Free can also offer “bonding process monitoring” which ensures relevant process parameters by measuring and logging the flow of glue and hardener, for optimal glue amounts together with measuring and logging the lamella and glue temperature. An alarm also gives an early warning if any pre-set value deviates. LignuPro™ Zero from AkzoNobel is a new ultra-low emitting system for furniture

production that has outstanding bonding performance coupled to high moisture resistance and provides a transparent glue line. LignuPro™ also delivers high levels of wood fibre tear. The content of free formaldehyde is below 0, 1%, no label declaration is needed for this thermosetting amino adhesive. The system is isocyanate free and has extremely low VOC. Performance is in line with existing formaldehyde based adhesives and the system has ability to pass ANSI test with a high resistance to moisture. LignuPro™ Zero complies with EN 12765, class 3 and offers high performance to a competitive price compared to other adhesives. AkzoNobel also has a range of solutions for structural adhesives and finishes to help your business meet these new challenges and has been ranked number one on the influential Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for the fourth consecutive year. For AkzoNobel it’s all about doing more with less. The mantra as we move towards the looming deadline and on into 2016 must be one of replacement, reduction and prevention to reduce exposure. With FF, LignuPro™ Free and LignuPro™ Zero, AkzoNobel can deliver a raft of formaldehyde free product solutions right now. After all, you wouldn’t want to be caught out would you? 26 INSTALLATION

www.furnitureproduction.net

Understanding the RHI Ranheat Engineering is well known as a leading provider of industrial wood waste/biomass-fired boilers, heaters and burners. In this article, the company’s Chris Franklin explains what users of wood burning equipment should be aware of in respect of permitting of all sizes of installations burning wood and also the specific requirements of being accepted onto the Renewable Heat Incentive. Ranheat Engineering specialise in the design, manufacture, installation and servicing of wood-fired boiler systems, primarily for use in the woodworking industry. In earlier years, projects have been driven by the huge financial savings over skips in the disposal of woodwaste particularly in fine dusts from man-made boards such as MDF and MFC to landfill. Added to this was the free heat that wood-fired heating systems gave the owners, either as space heating but also as process heat, supplying replacement air for spray rooms drying tunnels etc. In recent years the Governmentled Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) has been a massive incentive to the UK woodworking Industry to use its wood residues as a source of energy. The Renewable Heat Incentive is applicable to boilers within the woodworking industry. The permit flow chart explains what permits may be required by the local authority. Some of them may be in place, so will require a substantial change being registered with the regulator. The bands that the RHI has are small biomass boilers (less than 200kW) medium Biomass boilers

(200-1000kW) and large (over 1000kW). The scheme is administered by OFGEM on behalf of DECC and the government. I have assumed at this stage that you will be looking at a boiler in the medium size range. In simple terms the government pays a tariff to the owner of the equipment at an agreed rate per kW/hour for a period of 20 years from accreditation. This payment is index linked and rises each April in line with inflation. The current tier 1 tariff is 5.24p per kW/hour, for this size of boiler – medium biomass <1000kW. The payment is divided into two tiers; the tier 1 units on a medium size boiler of say 980kW are calculated as a function of the rated output of the boiler, in this example 980kW. To calculate the tier 1 units is 980kW x 1314 = 1,287,720kW/ hours. Any units over this amount generated are paid at tier 2, currently 2.27p per kW/hour. If all of the tier 1 units are utilised then an income of £67,476.52 per year would be derived for a period of 20 years, index linked. The nett yield on woodwaste is 3200kW hours per tonne. If we look at 15 tonnes per week and working 50 weeks of the year then the nett energy to be produced would be 15 x 50 x 3200

= 2,4000,000kW hours. If we assume you can have an eligible use for all of these units then you will have 1,112,280 at tier 2 = £30,031.56. Add this to the tier 1 units and you have a potential RHI income of circa £97,000 per 12 month period from the fuel available. The payments made under the scheme are derived from the installation of a Class 2 heat meter or meters, as defined by OFGEM. The independent metering consultant will require additional heat meters to be fitted, for example on a conventional fuelled boiler (fossil fuel boiler) dissipater or other ineligible use. The scheme is open to all business users subject to the rules laid down by European law with regards to De-Minimis state aid. There are other restrictions in cases where the business has received a separate grant under another scheme. As an example the RHI cannot be claimed as well as Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA). If you are going to use your own fuel you will need to register as a self-supplier on the BSL (Biomass Suppliers List). To register on the BSL you will need to show that you have a permit or an exemption from the EA (see permit flow chart). If supplying your own fuel you will

Mercia chooses Salvador Daltons Wadkin has provided Italian crosscutting technology to Mercia Garden Products, a specialist garden building manufacturer based in North Nottinghamshire that supplies a range of timber sheds, summer houses, greenhouses, award-winning play houses, log cabins and fencing to an ever-expanding market which embraces both domestic and public authority work. Mercia processes approximately 300,000 orders a year, and its unique range of timber buildings are despatched to all parts of the UK. In 2015 the company’s Malcolm Marriott and Terry Waldron approached Daltons Wadkin as they were looking to increase and speed up their crosscutting capacity. Accordingly, a number of meetings took place with Daltons Wadkin sales director Andy Walsh in order to analyse the production rates and specification required and identify a machine which would meet their demands. Daltons Wadkin has an impressive track record in providing equipment to increase the efficiency of manufacturing processes in the timber industry, and boasts considerable experience and expertise when it comes to crosscutting systems through its long association with Salvador, an Italian manufacturer of high-speed programmable crosscutting technology. As the main UK and Ireland distributor for Salvador, the company has supplied and installed its equipment to timber suppliers, joinery manufacturers and furniture specialists in all parts of the UK, and is used to planning

and providing cutting systems and specifications to meet individual customers’ requirements. A full working demonstration was arranged at the Daltons Wadkin Nottingham showroom so that Mercia’s team could see a Salvador machine put through its paces. There is a number of alternative configurations available, and after

examining these with Andy, the model chosen was a Salvador Superpush 250 optimising saw with twin aligners, 6200mm infeed pusher, 150mm cutting depth and a chain side loading system. This allows the machine to run continuously with minimum effort from the operator, bar loading the timber onto the feed chains. There is also an automatic outfeed

ejection system synchronised with the cutting cycle, ensuring no loss of time when cutting. The waste trapdoor activates rapidly, with the off-cuts dropping onto a waste conveyor. The new machine has been running at Mercia’s headquarters in Sutton-on-Trent for some months now and is revolutionising the manufacturer’s process. The machine has increased Mercia’s throughput and accuracy – the S250 being PC controlled provides full cut information for each shift, and operations director Malcolm Marriott can see at a glance the impressive performance provided by his new investment. Andy Walsh enthuses: “We were so pleased to have the opportunity of providing this superb crosscutting technology to Mercia Garden Products, and we were confident from the outset that the equipment provided would perform to – and even beyond – expectations. “We have known Mercia for a number of years, and although we are supplying Salvador crosscuts to all parts of the UK it is especially rewarding to have this opportunity and make such an impact within our own county of Nottinghamshire.” 0115 986 5201 daltonswadkin.com

Western Air Ducts retrofits intelligent LEV system at City of Oxford College The professionally-equipped woodworking workshop at the Rycotewood Furniture Centre, at the City of Oxford College city centre campus, is a key resource for the many students of furniture design and making who attend both vocational and university level courses at the college. It was very important, therefore, when it was decided to upgrade the dust extraction system, that the work could be carried out, not only to a reasonable budget, but also quickly and with minimal disruption to the use of the workshop during term-time. The requirement to update the existing dust extraction system had already been established, as it was underpowered to serve the 23 woodworking machines situated in the workshop, resulting in an excess of airborne dust in the room. In addition, when the extraction system was in operation the noise created disturbed teaching and other activities in adjacent rooms, even when the woodworking machines adjacent to those rooms were not being used. The original intention of the College Estate department was to completely remove the existing dust extraction system and replace it with an entirely new system, including all the high level ducting, fans, filters, etc, and it was on this basis that several firms were invited to tender for the work. However, when the specialists at Western Air Ducts examined the specification documents in detail, they came to the conclusion that the same improvement in dust extraction efficiency could be achieved by retrofitting the company’s Inteliair system to the existing dust extraction installation – retaining all the existing extraction infrastructure, saving the

FP271_pages.indd 30

Western Air Ducts installation at City of Oxford College client significant time and expense. Briefly described, Inteliair is an intelligent air control system that reduces operating costs, lowers carbon footprint and improves air quality by optimising the efficiency of dust extraction, fume extraction and ventilation systems. It does this through the automatic and continuous monitoring of demand, using local control units that detect when extraction is required. In the case of the Ryecotewood furniture workshop, an Inteliair damper control unit is fitted to the extract duct serving each of the woodworking machines. When a particular machine is switched on,

the Inteliair system detects that fact and automatically opens a damper accessing the extraction system, regulates the main extraction fan speed accordingly and dust is extracted. In the original system, and in competitors’ proposed replacement systems, when one machine was in use, the whole dust extraction to every machine was activated, wasting large amounts of energy. By using the Inteliair system, where extraction occurs only when and where required, the original, underpowered system, was enabled to provide all the extraction required, at a fraction of the capital cost and with potentially significant on-going energy savings. A second, additional benefit to the college is the reduction in noise generated, not only within the workshop itself, which can be a pretty loud environment, but also in rooms located nearby. This is particularly true for teaching rooms adjacent to the workshop, which were quite severely impacted by noise from extraction to machines close to the boundary walls, even when the machines were not in fact being operated. Using the Inteliair system, extraction to those machines only occurs when they are in use, resulting in a greatly improved environment in surrounding areas. A third, and perhaps critical

advantage of Western Air Ducts retrofitted Inteliair solution, has been its very rapid installation. Because all the existing ductwork, extraction fans and filters remained in place, the work involved in making the upgrade was greatly reduced and could be timed to occur over the vacation period, with the result that students’ work was not disrupted. Andy Appleby, facilities manager, City of Oxford College, explains: “The existing extraction system in the furniture workshop was really not fit for purpose and was not meeting our sustainability policy and procedures, particularly as regards energy usage. It was when we started to investigate installing a replacement system that we discovered Inteliair, which we had not previously been aware of. “When Western Air Ducts came and explained how Inteliair could transform our existing installation from its basic state into a fully automated extraction system without the need to replace the existing ductwork –which was really relatively new – we were convinced that this was the solution for us. “The installation went extremely smoothly, the system is easy to use and the tuition and support from Western Air Ducts has been excellent – altogether we are really delighted with the results.” 01761 416700 westernairducts.com

Viet slashes sanding time at Shaker Doors A Viet wide belt sander has boosted efficiency at an Oxfordshire door manufacturer. Shakers Doors, a family-owned business employing 12 staff, specialises in the manufacture of high-end bespoke Shaker style kitchen cabinet doors as well as internal and external doors. The description Shaker style refers to a frame and panel door with a flat centre panel and generally square edges without any profiling, giving a simple straight and clean look. Shaker Doors’ customer base is split equally between trade and domestic customers. An important part of its domestic revenue stream is the production of replacement IKEA kitchen and wardrobe doors, or made-to-measure doors for consumers who have purchased IKEA carcasses. A fitting service within a 50 miles radius of Oxford is available.

Shaker Door’s Viet sander has cut sanding time considerably

FP271_pages.indd 32

The Viet S1 wide-belt sander at Shaker Doors The quality doors are produced using MDF and a wide variety of hardwoods. Before buying the Viet the joinery company was equipped with two sanders, an entry-level 900mm widebelt model and a 1300mm wide brush sander. Managing director Oliver Bryan says: “Unfortunately the wide belt sander wasn’t really satisfactory. After the doors had passed through it they had to be sent to the bench for sanding with an orbital sander before being put through the brush sander. They were then oiled or sprayed in our spray shop.” As part of a drive to improve efficiency Oliver decided to buy a wide belt sander that would take away the need for the additional bench work. He carried out some initial research on three sander manufacturers before deciding to take a closer look at the Viet, whose artisan models are supplied by TM Machinery of Leicester. “I went along for a demo at TM’s showroom and told them exactly what I needed the sander to do,” he says. “I was impressed with the quality of the finish produced by the Viet as well as the build of the sanders. I then spoke to an impartial service engineer who works in the woodworking industry and he said I couldn’t go far wrong with a Viet.” The S1 model he has bought is

a popular 1350mm twin-head widebelt sander that offers a winning combination of high precision, versatility and a tough build quality to give it a long working life. It’s the ideal sander for use where high levels of throughput are required at an affordable cost. Featuring a thick anti-wear steel work bed that guarantees precision for any job, it has a wide range of sanding units allowing customisation to suit a range of applications. There’s a choice of push button or touch screen controls with automatic positioning for thickness setting, while adjustable pressure rollers guarantee the stability of items placed on the work bed. “Having the Viet has meant we have become far more efficient in our joinery workshop,” says Oliver. “The quality of the machine’s calibrating and fine sanding means that doors can now go straight to the brush sander without the need for any additional bench work. “When I bought it, I calculated it might save us between 15 and 20% of the time it used to take to prepare doors for the brush sander, and this is exactly what we are achieving with it. As well as saving on time and labour it has also substantially reduced the amount of product handling required.” 0116 271 7155 tmservices.co.uk tmmachinery.co.uk

deVOL opts for Premium sanding solution from Kündig From humble beginnings in 1989, deVOL has grown into a renowned, design-led manufacturer of bepsoke kitchens, interiors and bedrooms, all designed and built in Leicestershire. The company is continually moving forward, as shown by its purchase of Cotes Mill, an historic 16th century water mill, which now boasts four floors of showrooms displaying not only the company’s four kitchen ranges but an eclectic mix of vintage furniture, gifts and unusual homewares all sourced and bought especially for Cotes Mill. In 2013 bathroom cabinets were added to the company’s Shaker range, part of the continual process of designing new pieces to add to the company’s ranges. In 2014 a showroom opened in Clerkenwell, London, and in 2015 the Sebastian Cox Kitchen was launched: a kitchen that utilises sustainable British timber combining good taste, modern innovation, traditional techniques and true inspiration. Managing director, Robin McLellan, is always seeking that extra 1% of performance that will enhance the quality of the company’s offering. As part of this process, deVOL invested in a Kündig Premium-3 1100 RRP sander, delivered and commissioned in September 2015. deVOL had already had a widebelt sander, explains Robin, but it was a five-year-old twin belt sander which was second-hand when bought, and after a pass through the machine each component also needed to be sanded by hand. “The company is growing, we were up 48% last year, so we are continually trying to improve the quality of the product and make

FP271_pages.indd 34

sure the processes are as efficient as possible.” Robin continues: “In the search for a new sander, we worked through Markfield Woodworking Machinery (MWM), with whom we have a long standing relationship. We have bought a lot of machinery from them in the past, and they introduced us to Kündig Ltd and to the company’s Carl O’Meara.” The Kündig sander was one of several that deVOL investigated, Carl says: “Robin went to see an example of one of our machines working locally to him at Wreak Valley Craftsmen (who have a Premium-2 1100 RE with vacuum belt) where I met him with our area representative, Mr Gavin Cooper of MWM, and we went through the machine and carried out various demonstrations using different grit configurations on a selection of kitchen doors and components brought by Robin for test purposes. Following further trials using the demonstration machine at our works, Robin ordered a new Kündig Premium-3 1100 RRP sander.” Robin says: “We tried a variety of machines, and the Kündig sander was the one we had the best experience with finishing-wise. We were aware of their reputation, and wanted to get the best machine on the market. “The advantages of the Kündig were all very subtle things, and that is often the case with fine finishing. These subtleties become quite critical in creating a finish that is spot on compared to one that is 99% there. We just wanted to make

sure we got the belt and braces right.” Robin highlights as a particular advantage the fact that this is a three belt machine with a rollerroller-pad configuration, and credits this as one of the reasons that further hand finishing is no longer required. The sander is used to sand doors, including maple doors, worktops and countertops, plywood carcass material – in fact, most things used in the kitchens and other furniture ranges will pass through the Kündig sander. “We require a particularly high finish on the doors, and the Kündig sander gives that,” says Robin. Kündig’s Premium range is especially designed for the sanding and finishing of solid wood and panels, including veneers, and can be configured for lacquer sanding. The sanders are designed

to be easy to operate, with a welldesigned control panel. An oftenquoted advantage is the fact that it is the sanding heads that rise and lower, rather than the workpiece. Kündig engineers design and manufacture the sanders in such a way that they should give reliable service for many years to come. When asked if he would recommend the Kündig sander, Robin replies: “Yes, it is lovely.” He continues: “One of the big reasons for buying the machine was because we had worked through MWM previously and had a good relationship with Gavin. There is a lot of trust there, and in addition to our own assessment of the machine, Gavin’s recommendation was key. We received excellent service both from Carl O’Meara and from MWM.” 0845 833 0565 kundig.co.uk

Bartram Timber opts for Cursal automatic crosscut system In order to achieve increased crosscutting capacity, Bartram Timber – based in Sandy, Bedfordshire – has invested in a new Cursal automatic crosscutting line supplied by JJ Smith. Bartram Timber was set up by managing director James Bartram in 1998 and since then, the company has gained an excellent reputation for its indepth knowledge of the timber industry, and the wide range of products it offers to its everexpanding customer base. The current product line-up includes timber, MDF panels and mouldings, Thermowood, decking and all its associated products. Foremost has been the development of the importing and machining of hardwoods and softwoods which include larch and cedar used for cladding, decking and construction. This is closely followed by the company’s venture into the inhouse manufacture of Easi-Joist® trussed rafters and timber frames, all of which involved a significant investment in machinery and personnel. Earlier this year James Bartram recognised the need to increase the crosscutting capacity and so set about contacting several UK suppliers to see what they could recommend. In his own words some had “very little idea” of what was required and consequently their proposals were immediately dismissed. However, James also contacted JJ Smith and spoke with its crosscutting product manager Kevin McGlone. He recognised straight away that Kevin knew his

Cursal TRSI high speed push fed cross cut saw with automatic loading and outfeed sorting stuff and invited him down to the company’s Sandy site to review and discuss exact production requirements in further detail. After calculating the throughput Bartram needed to achieve, a Cursal TRSI high speed optimisation crosscut system was proposed. It was to have a 6m infeed capacity linked to a cross chain feed and board separation loading system, thus allowing the operator to load the infeed chains with boards while the machine automatically separates them prior to push-feeding through the saw. On the outfeed of the saw a 5m conveyor with two pneumatic kickers were specified enabling the cut pieces to be assigned to a specific location with the off-cuts going to a waste bin. Gravity-fed unloading tables were also included

6m infeed loading capacity cross chain loading and board separation system

FP271_pages.indd 38

to store the cut components. The push-feed system on this model of Cursal machine has pneumatic lifting of the pusher on the return run with feeding from right to left. Movement is on precision linear guides – rolling circulation system – with a built-in lubrication device and driven by a brush-less servo motor with high torque and precision. The speed of the pusher is programmable up to 200m/min with a positioning accuracy of ±0.2mm/m. The saw cutting action is controlled by the machine CNC with adjustable cutting time from 0.3 to two seconds while the vertical movement of the saw blade is pneumatic with adjustable speed. The maximum saw diameter is 500mm, driven by a 7.5hp brake motor. In order to ensure a perfectly square cut there is a pneumatic side alignment arm with adjustable pressure fitted before the blade, and a pneumatic vertical pressure unit on the outfeed of the saw equipped with braking wheels and high resistance rubber to reduce wear. The machine is controlled by an industrial PC – CNC with colour display – allowing the operator quick and easy programming. Depending on customers’ individual requirements three different levels of optimisation can be specified. In order for James to fully evaluate all the features of the proposed machine, a visit to SCA Timber in Hull was arranged as Bartram had purchased a similar specification system last year. As

he is a qualified pilot, owning his own helicopter it took him less than an hour to reach SCA, which allowed him to land next to the factory. James spent a considerable amount of time inspecting the machine and talking with SCA staff about its performance and reliability. As everything he viewed and heard was very positive, a final price was agreed with Kevin and an order placed there and then. The Cursal saw line was delivered on time and James comments: “As a result of JJ Smith’s professional approach, every aspect of the order and installation went very smoothly. The saw is working even faster than we had originally anticipated and it is performing extremely well. Due to our continuing growth there is every chance we will be adding the optional infeed automatic vacuum lifting system in the none to distant future. Kevin McGlone adds: “It has been a pleasure to work with James on this project and we are delighted to have been able to supply a cross-cut system that exactly suited Bartram’s requirements. As we supply a range of cross cutting machines from different manufacturers this enables us to offer the correct solution to suit each customers’ individual requirements, rather than a onetype-fits-all approach which some suppliers can only offer.” There is a video on JJ Smith’s YouTube page to see the machine in operation. 0151 548 9000 jjsmith.co.uk

These most recent investments support our future growth and our plans to improve our efficiency.

“At Welcome Furniture we knew that material loading and handling were essential performance characteristics, which would increase the efficiency of our cutting operation. Often manual labour is used to convey large panels to a saw, which creates huge inefficiencies. “But on our fh6 material loading was automated with a scissor lift, powered roller tracks and a separate push-off carriage. All these resulted in a far more reliable and predictable transfer of components, creating a more efficient production process. “This new machine is highly accurate and consistent, enabling more precision for improved quality and fit. It’s also very fast and efficient allowing us to be more responsive and offer shorter lead times to our customers. And because all Welcome’s furniture is made to order and despatched to retailers already built up, via their own fleet of vehicles, it is important to match their customers’ expectations every time.” With over 30 door finishes to inspire its customers, Welcome Furniture demanded a versatile machine with the ability to cut a variety of materials. The solution was the Schelling fh6 cut-to-size saw because it delivered high quality cuts with the flexibility, accuracy and capacity required by their production process. It is important to have a sawing system which was adaptable to changing customer needs, particularly with

regard to board dimension and board surface quality. Another impressive aspect of the fh6 are the automated integrated sensors, which come as standard, which automatically detect the panel size and book height, making life easier for the saw operator. Also, there is the double-strip aligners placed before and after the saw line, which remain on the material to provide precise angular alignment when cutting. With an alignment range of 40mm to 2200mm, this was ideal because Welcome Furniture knew the fh6 could deliver high cutting accuracy even with the narrowest strips. Also thanks to a 21kW motor and a 460mm diameter saw blade, the fh6 delivers a maximum saw blade projection of 135mm. “The ultimate test of a Schelling fh6 for us is its repeatable product performance,” says John, “a company like Welcome Furniture trades on the reputation of its brand, so this makes consistent accurate, repeatable cutting a critical component of manufacturing and it delivered on all counts.” Welcome Furniture’s investment in Schelling is a resounding vote of confidence – back in 2009, the company invested in its first Schelling. John concludes: “Based on its performance and reliability we didn’t hesitate to buy our fourth Schelling saw because they have played such an important part in delivering our success at Welcome Furniture.” schelling.com

GLOSSMAX GlossMax High Gloss panels are produced with an advanced unique technology, going through a variety of industrial processes, in which adhesive and UV lacquer is applied to melamine coated MDF or particle boards to achieve a decorative, shiny surfaced wood panel. In the hot coating process that achieves excellent adhesion to the melamine coated surface, PUR (Polyurethane) adhesive coating is applied to the melamine surface. Once the Polyurethane adhesive has gone through chemical curing an outstanding hard surface which is resistant to scratches, impacts and wear is achieved. The PUR substance is also durable against UV rays. The outer layer, which hardens with the UV rays applied directly after, provides an excellent level of gloss. This technology has forged a new path in surface coating, brought forth the natural appearance and texture of solid wood and provided a solution which has simplified the surface finish application. GlossMax panels create modern, graceful furniture combinations with mirrorshine for kitchen, bath, home, office and all other decoration projects.

Company upgrades to modern biomass boiler from Wood Waste Technology The team at Wood Waste Technology (WWT) has installed a state-of-the-art biomass hot water boiler system into G&P Cases Ltd, based in Wootton Bassett. A family-owned business, G&P Cases has been involved in the manufacture of industrial timber packaging solutions for the last 50 years, and has 15 staff who work in its 19,000ft2 factory in Wiltshire. The team at G&P Cases aren’t new to biomass, as it has been running a small wood-burning warm air boiler in one part of the factory for over 10 years. Having experienced the benefits of biomass on a smaller scale, G&P decided it was time to upgrade to a larger biomass unit, in order to be able to burn more waste wood and achieve greater cost benefits and savings. The business calculated that a new biomass boiler could save around £8000 a year on fuel for its gas space heating system, plus an additional £10,000 a year saving in skip costs by being able to burn more waste wood. On top of that, the business realised it was eligible for the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme, which offers substantial financial benefits to companies that invest in new biomass technology. So, as well as making considerable savings on heating and waste removal bills by burning waste to create energy, it means companies with successful RHI applications could earn around £17,000 - £21,500 a year, for 20 years, with a 209kw boiler depending on the actual heat used. G&P Cases read about WWT’s new biomass boilers that could provide space heating for the factory, plus heating and domestic hot water for the rest of the building. They were impressed that, having been designed and tested to BSEN303-5-2012, the highest standard for efficiency and emissions, Wood Waste Technology’s revolutionary boiler is one of the most efficient wood waste boilers available in the UK. It has been independently tested at 92.4% efficiency, allowing it to qualify for the Energy Technology List. It was also the first in the UK to be declared fully compliant with the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme without the need for additional flue gas filtration equipment (significantly reducing the investment and on-going maintenance costs of

FP271_pages.indd 44

a RHI compliant boiler), allowing customers to maximise their return from the RHI scheme by getting more money from every kilogram of fuel burnt. WWT boilers can also operate in clean air zones under the Clean Air Act, as the boilers meet the two highest standards in emissions regulations, so are able to be used in even the sternest of jurisdictions in the UK. WWT also has a 100% success rate in RHI applications for companies burning chipboard and MDF. Managing director at G&P Cases, David Waldron, says: “We’d already calculated a positive business case for buying a biomass boiler and were probably going ahead with it anyway – but once we’d factored in the RHI benefits, there was no reason not to do it! The new boiler dramatically reduces our heating and waste bills, and our RHI payments so far have been even better than expected, so we should definitely see a positive difference in our overall annual profit figure!”

Whilst investing in the new boiler, the team at G&P Cases took the opportunity to upgrade the extraction system, to integrate it properly into the new boiler and maximise best use of all the wood waste. David continues: “We’re delighted that we’ve purchased our boiler from Wood Waste Technology – it was definitely the ideal, most effective solution for our company. Throughout the whole process, the team has been exceptionally helpful – not just with the purchase and installation of the boiler, but also by making sure we got the best deal with the RHI. We really liked the fact that everyone we talked to at WWT had technical knowledge about the product, instead of just getting through to a salesperson. It was so refreshing to be able to speak to someone who could properly talk us through all the technical benefits of the product, and fully answer our questions straight away.” G&P cases also purchased a GAZ82 shredder, as well as a

Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning system that allows them to quickly and easily clean the boiler, to help keep it running at maximum efficiency. WWT’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. As well as being a distributor for Putzmaus, WWT is also the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications. 01785 250400 woodwastetechnology.com grossuk.co.uk putzmaus.co.uk

Starbank’s new factory lit and heated by itself When Starbank Panel Products set out to create a new factory, a sustainable approach quickly became a key objective which included the supply and use of electricity and heat for the impressive facility. Starbank Panels Products’ impressive new factory covers some 120,000ft2 and will include an office block and despatch areas – the current development sits on 16.5 acres and leaves significant room for future expansion. The development of the site has focused on sustainability installing 1000 solar panels which will provide 65-70% of the required electricity and a new voltage loss optimisation substation to improve overall electric usage. In addition, a central point of the new factory is a biomass boiler plant Viessmann – installed by Mawera UK – as a complete project

FP271_pages.indd 46

including wood storage, transfer, burning and suppling hot water to within the complete factory. The first stage is to provide storage to the factory-produced wood off-cuts and dust – this is chipped and then stored as it is produced directly into the silo. Constructed from concrete sections and towering 16m, its storage capacity is 900m3 of wood dust and chips and is sufficient to provide Starbank with heat throughout the entire winter period. Storing through the summer will enable Starbank to maximise wood usage in the biomass boiler, which will burn 35 tonnes per week during the winter months. Wood chips and dust are transferred automatically to a distribution section within the boiler house that feeds the boiler – Vitoflex 300 FSB-R-SE 950SE – that is capable of providing 160,000kW hours per week of heat. The FSR Mawera plant is automatically controlled by a flat moving grate with water cooling that’s designed specifically for use with dry materials such as MDF, chipboard and melamine-covered boards. Oxygen control is used to govern the combustion process and in the FSR that extends to control of two sections of combustion as well as recirculation and mixing of the flue gases with primary and secondary air to lower nitrous oxide emissions. The flue gases are passed through two sections of abatement – first a multi-cyclone that takes out the larger particles, and then on to an electrostatic filter that removes even smaller particles before emitting to atmosphere. Each section has ash bin collection on the underside of each unit so dust can be removed easily. The biomass installation is backed up by a three-pass Viessmann Vitomax 300 gas boiler that provides a full capacity heating system and can also be used to top up the biomass installation if no biomass is available. The total heating system is pressurised hot water up to 110°C that is circulated around the factory in distribution pipes. Pressurisation

and expansion are controlled by a Flamco III automatic expansion and fill system. The hot water from both the biomass and gas boiler is pumped into a low loss distribution header from where it is circulated to Sabiana heaters throughout the factory production area, with different zones within the factory that can be adjusted independently via thermostatic controls. In the roof area of the factory are stratification fans which circulate the warm air, sending it from the high sections of the building to the lower areas to ensure a more constant working temperature throughout the factory. The objective of the project for

Mawera was to provide a total solution that would handle the wood dust and chips together with the feed systems to the boiler – and provide heat to the entire premises. Mawera’s solution provides a complete package from wood handling to heating of the premises – and the plant takes into consideration the RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) BSL (Biomass Suppliers List) and the LAPPC (PG1/12 July 2013) Permit. Thus, a complete package to provide wood chips and dust removal and to heat the total factory with a considerable payback from the project is offered. 01543 258844 mawera.co.uk

AXYZ router sets the scene at specialist builder An AXYZ 6000 series router, supplied by AXYZ International, is said to have made a significant contribution to the continuing success of Kent-based All Scene All Props.

All Scene All Props wa established in 2002 by founding partners Danny Hayter and Piers Ross. The company’s primary business is the provision of scenery and props for theatre and related performing arts venues that are renowned for their outstanding quality and ingenuity. These specialist building constructions have been used for many of the best known and most popular productions staged at prestigious theatre locations such as The National, Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and The Palladium in London and the Minerva in Chichester. Operating from a 25,000ft2 workshop near Tunbridge Wells, All Scene All Props offers a full range of services, from initial design concepts, materials specification, in-house construction and onsite installation, with the ability to handle all kinds of project regardless of size or complexity. The comprehensive in-house production facility includes specialist carpentry, engineering

FP271_pages.indd 48

and scenic arts sections, together with a full-scale space to enable every project to be pre-built prior to delivery. The AXYZ router now installed at the company is a single-head AXYZ 6012 model with a bed size of 2.1m wide x 3.6m. It includes a seven-station automatic toolchange facility to help speed up production and accommodate different tooling requirements. As managing partner Piers Ross explains: “Purchase of the AXYZ 6012 CNC router was facilitated by the generous trade-in discount offer made by AXYZ International that enabled us to part-exchange our old AXYZ 4008 router for this new and higher-performance model. This has resulted in significantly increased production levels and faster turnaround on the work we undertake.” The router is used to process a wide range of disparate materials used in stage and related constructions. These include hardwood, plywood, MDF, aluminium composite materials, aluminium, acrylic and plastic

sheets, polyurethane foamed boards and high-impact laminates. Piers Ross adds: “We use the router for virtually everything we need to process. “It is a massively versatile production workhorse which is easy to work with and which, unlike other similar production machinery, does not raise any health and safety issues that need to be addressed before use. An added benefit is that we can now source all of our tooling requirements from AXYZ International’s 24/7 online CNCRoutershop facility.” In common with all AXYZ routers, the 6012 model can be supplied with a host of additional machining options. These include the AXYZ Auto Zone Management function that ensures the material being processed is always held securely during the routing/cutting cycle and the latest A2MC machine control system for optimum precision and smooth operation. The A2MC has a massive 16GB of memory for program storage and provides network connectivity for error-free program transfer.

A further optional production tool enhancement is the latest AXYZ helical rack and pinion drive system. This incorporates a multiple gear teeth configuration that helps spread the workload more evenly, leading to greater routing/cutting accuracy, faster throughput speeds, reduced material wastage and ultimately a longer than normal machine life. As to how the AXYZ 6012 has performed since installation and the service provided by AXYZ International prior to, during and following installation, Piers Ross concludes: “In a single word, the router has performed ‘flawlessly’. The service provided by the AXYZ International team has been exceptional, with help and advice always available if required. In addition to servicing all of our core manufacturing requirements, the router has also enabled us to offer a CNC machining facility to other companies who need to outsource this particular production requirement.” 01952 291600 axyz.com

Premium wood finishing at Schreinerei Schlingmann Schreinerei Schlingmann makes exclusive furniture pieces to order, and almost all of them have lacquered surfaces – a range of solutions from Binks was specified to help create a consistent finish across the company’s varied portfolio. Schreinerei Schlingmann’s product range extends from individual items of furniture to interior design products for front panels, doors and patio planters to kitchens, windows and shopfittings. The company is based in Bad König, near Frankfurt. Since its establishment in 1998 it has maintained a high standard of output, starting at the planning stage and continuing through manufacture to delivery. To reach the required quality, the company’s Werner Schlingmann decided to rely on the new Binks MX Lite AAA spray package. This compact coating system comprises a high pressure MXL 4/32 stainless steel piston pump, the Binks AA4400M AAA spray gun with tip, and a SuperFlex hose package. “Besides the perfect surface finishing that we were able to achieve with this system, it is light and simple to use, and helps us meet our high standards in terms of environmental protection. The excellent price-to-quality ratio played a role too – thanks to the good relationship we have with our specialised dealer, Helmut Trebus Spritztechnik,” explains master carpenter Cyrill Rasewsky. A convincing benefit of the new MXL pump is the pulsation-free delivery of the coating. Thanks to

a number of innovative technologies, such as the magnetic detents, significantly less winking of the spray pattern occurs during the pump changeover stroke. Another advantage of the MXL pump is the low overspray. This allows paint savings of up to 20% and a significant reduction of greenhouse gases. The long-lasting, ceramic-coated piston rods, and the self-adjusting packings, reduce maintenance downtime. There are further advantages. The pump has been designed with easy maintenance in mind – with no superfluous covers or cowlings, it is easy to separate the air motor and fluid sections and disassemble for maintenance. The new Binks SuperFlex hose provides a significant increase in user comfort. A number of different tip sizes is available for the AA4400M Air Assisted Airless spray gun. Binks engineers have ensured that every tip provides good atomisation over the length of the spray fan, resulting in no colour or thickness variations, making the gun suitable for a variety of paint variations and viscosities. A look at the finished products produced by Schreinerei Schlingmann confirms all these positive statements. The products are coated efficiently, with little overspray and a high quality finish. The spray pattern is evenly distributed, fine and consistent, even in the case of the more problematic coatings. 01202 571111 finishingbrands.com

Case Study Case Study for Movac Wood Finishes Joe West Riflestocks, precision built rifle stocks created with a blend of cutting edge CNC machinery, and traditional woodworking skills passed down over three generations. Our stocks provide the ultimate in luxury and dependability.

“Joe West Riflestocks was born when my dad used his vast woodwork skills to help adjust a rifle stock for his friend who had lost the sight in his dominant eye. I had just finished college and was working part time in his kitchen company. We both saw that there was a market for luxury wooden stocks through my dad’s many connections with the shooting world. We began making them on a small specialist machine by hand but quickly realised that demand outweighed supply and we couldn’t manufacture them fast enough. The best solution was to upgrade to fully automated CNC machinery and soon enough we had the capability to produce twice the work. Our material was imported from America until the company that manufactured it sadly closed due to a fire incident. We now produce it ourselves, using Movac’s range of wood dyes to give us the deep colour that is the trademark of our stocks. All our finishing materials come from Movac too, from the sandpaper and dust masks we use right up to the high gloss lacquers that give us a mirror finish. Our worldwide customers from countries such as the UK, Spain, Italy, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, to name a few, come to us for high quality wooden stocks for hunting and competitions. We currently export our products all over the globe on a weekly basis. On a personal level, I started shooting F-Class a few years ago, which is an extreme accuracy long range discipline. Many call it the Formula 1 of shooting sports because of its highperformance equipment and the need for constant innovation to stay ahead of competitors. Shooting in the national league really helped spread the word about my cutting-edge stocks and provided a great advertising opportunity. I made it into the Great Britain F-class team in 2014, and have contributed to two European Championship wins. My fellow team members and I are looking forward to taking my stocks to compete at the World Championships in Canada next year.”

The dark walnut DI-NOC Architectural Finishes from 3M provide a sophisticated feel

By choosing DI-NOC Architectural Finishes to refurbish rather than replace the doors, an estimated saving of over $1m was made Over 2200 internal doors and 1600 closet shelves have been transformed using DINOC Architectural Finishes by 3M, selected by design firm Gettys to provide a consistent sophisticated feel throughout all the rooms. By choosing DI-NOC Architectural Finishes to refurbish rather than replace the doors, an estimated saving of over $1m was made. For the Hilton Minneapolis, Gettys selected DINOC architectural finishes FW-334, a fine wood pattern that provides the appearance and texture of real wood. A dark walnut finish was chosen for its rich, luxurious colour, that gives the room the contemporary feel required and complements its existing wood finishes. With an application time of just 60-90 minutes per door, the installation was fast and easy, creating minimum disruption to guests and limited downtime of each room. By using the original entry, bathroom and adjoining doors, and shelving, the flexible finishes were applied in situ to the curved or flat surfaces without the need for heavy equipment, causing any disturbance to guests, or dust and debris, and no additional costs were incurred for their removal or disposal. The high quality, self-adhesive, laminate

finishes feature Comply Adhesive from 3M, which is ideal for professional-looking on-site installations that stand the test of time. The adhesive features a network of microstructure air channels. Once pressure is applied, any trapped air can escape via tiny channels, for a bubble-free finish. They are highly durable, being resistant to smoke and other pollutants, the ingress of water and dirt, impact wear, abrasion and mould, and are easy to maintain in a pristine condition without the need for harsh chemical cleaning agents. They have been tested to meet IMO flammability requirements, and the majority of patterns carry a Class O + 1 rating, thus enhancing their suitability for interior commercial applications. Available in more than 700 designs, colours and textures, the finishes provide almost unlimited potential for personalisation at a fraction of the cost of replacement, and most patterns can be used for both indoor and outdoor applications with an expected durability of 12 and five years respectively. 0800 121 4739 3M.co.uk/innovativefinishes

Over the last ten years, window manufacturing has changed dramatically. Batch sizes have declined steadily whilst the complexity of machined components has risen. In this article, Homag UK sales and marketing director, Simon Brooks, explains the challenges window manufacturers encounter and how Homag is well placed to help businesses prosper in this dynamic sector.

Seven reasons why window manufacturers need CNC machinery

The Homag BMG 511 CNC processing centre with extensive configuration options A few short years ago most UK manufacturers would have had a window line which they used to machine the end condition – joints – and internal profile before assembling the sash and presenting this assembled window to the CNC for outside machining and secondary operations such as ironmongery routings. “The challenges faced by window producers today have changed this,” explains Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director of Homag UK. He continues: “The ever-more complex designs of window profiles require intricate machining detail and smaller batch sizes. In addition, ironmongery routings have become more diverse and the level of detail has increased with horns, vents and fixing methods.” All these changes have led to the flexibility and output of a CNC machine now offering the ideal solution to meet the demands of modern window manufacturers. Simon Brooks again: “Interestingly, at Homag UK, we now find that we are dealing not only with the large manufacturers, but also smaller and smaller window companies who want to take advantage of the benefits a tailored CNC brings to their business.

FP271_pages.indd 64

“At first glance, the decision of which CNC is right for your business may seem a bit daunting and that is completely understandable. Our approach, however, is designed to ensuring each and every customer gets the right machine for their production requirements. “The experience the Homag Group has amassed in delivering working single component machines into the UK is second to none. From the initial consultation, we work hand in glove with each customer to make sure the specification of their machine is exactly right for their needs. Together, we ensure that the combination of tools, machine and software match up to provide a solution not only for the current demands of the business, but also one that allows for future growth. “As part of this in-depth tailoring, we ensure the machine undergoes intense testing in the factory before it leaves Germany. This ensures that the customer’s investment is productive from the moment it is installed in their facility.” Seven reasons why CNC technology will revolutionise your business With the experience Homag has

gained from specifying hundreds of CNC machines, it has identified the top seven reasons why window manufacturers need to be investing in this 21st century technology. 1. Fully finished parts One of the major advantages of a CNC machine is that it can handle all the processes on the one machine so there is no need for secondary finishing. For special parts, such as full arched head windows, Homag’s optional joinery table enables production in one piece, eliminating the need to machine the arch in segments. 2. Total flexibility Homag’s highly versatile machine table features moving clamps, rotating clamps and the ability to reclamp components either manually or automatically between operations permitting six-sided machining without the need to relocate the workpiece and risk losing the datum points. This ensures total accuracy of each component. 3. High output Tool changers with high capacity and short change times are the basis for operational flexibility and high productivity. In addition, the multi-head machines either mask

tool changes or allow machining of different operations on two parts simultaneously. 4. Reduced handling As the workpieces are processed on one machine there is less work in progress, less damage and no need to re-work dented or damaged parts caused through mishandling. Also, the automatic loading and unloading options enable unmanned operation for several hours, increasing output and reducing handling. 5. Increased quality and consistency The renowned German engineering of Homag’s CNC machines guarantees all its models are designed and built to exacting standards. As a consequence, the machines deliver first class quality, time after time. Many of the CNCs have a heavy-duty machine bed made of the latest vibrationabsorbing material Sorb Tech. This vibration-damping material helps save around 60% primary energy and enhances processing quality by providing outstanding surface quality due to reduced vibrations. 6. Easy operation All designs and routings can be

defined offline and are able to be interlinked with costing and ERP programs which means the machine operator is relieved of such tasks and can focus on production. The acclaimed woodWOP software that controls Homag Group processing centres interfaces seamlessly with almost every commercially available window design and build software package and makes operation simple and quick. 7. Proven technology and experience CNC technology for single component production may be new in the UK, but it has been practised for more than 20 years in Germany. Accordingly, Homag has a wealth of proven experience in this field and is ideally placed to provide the right advice to deliver the solution that will work for any business no matter what its size. The Homag BMG 500/600 CNC processing centres Investing in a highly efficient Homag BMG 500/600 CNC processing centre will provide the capability to fulfil wide-ranging different manufacturing requirements. The BMG models are multi-purpose joinery processing centres; each machine is a complete system guaranteeing maximum output and efficiency every time – no matter how individual your production requirements are. They are available with a different range of clamps which can be used for single component fully finished machining or for the machining of assembled sashes, machining all exterior profiles and ironmongery routings. The BMG range is offered in different machine sizes, a multitude of head and tool-changer configurations and a wide selection of manual and auto table options. With the addition of the optional projection laser, the machines can be used for the manufacture of stairs, doors or panel-based applications.

Like every Homag Group CNC, the BMG range is specified with Homag’s market-leading woodWOP software. This powerful control software is easy to use and is particularly advantageous for the smaller joiners which, potentially, would not need external software as woodWOP is scalable and may be linked to ERP software at a later date. The Homag BMB 800/900 powerProfiler CNC processing centres The Homag BMB 800/900 series provides high performance in a relatively small space thanks to the parallel processing of multiple components, fast tool changing and a single point for loading and removal. The machines can handle straight parts, curved parts, doors and supplementary elements, and can process all six sides of a solid piece of wood. The new gripping and clamping technology opens up additional possibilities for profile design, making it future-proofed for new window systems. It is one machine, with one data interface and one tool set that will handle all your processes for window and door manufacturing. The heart of the machine features a solid, yet compact, gantry bridge with a rigid guide track for the clamping tables. The tool-changer has ample capacity for large and long tools, whilst the pre-change system enables fast tool changes. The BMB’s clamping table has program-controlled, movable and rotatable clamping elements to cope with an almost limitless range of profiles, whilst the console table has additional consoles with stop pins for processing curves, doors and other surface parts. Simon Brooks again: “One of the many advantages of the BMB 800/900 series is its scalability. Right now your production might be say, 15 window units per shift, but in 18 months’ time that may have increased to more than 40. The BMB models can easily cope with such increases.

Three-stage clamping system for the precise processing of window and door parts on the Homag BMB

Homag BMB featuring high-performance spindles and independent operation with simultaneous processing on both tables “Also, the flexibility of the machine means that if you want to integrate it into an overall system and interlink it with a moulder, cross cut saw or spray line, for example, that can easily be achieved. Our team at Homag UK will work with you to create the best possible overall concept to meet your requirements. “Another major advantage of the Homag BMB range is that it is controlled with Homag’s own software which has been developed to be convenient, simple to operate and extremely powerful. The new powerTouch operating system combines design and function and

is characterised by the full HD multitouch monitor, ergonomic touch operation, simple navigation and the standardised user interface. “The extensive range of options with up to five-axis routing technology and the innovative clamping technology means that the BMB 800/900 series is futureproofed to handle trends in the market.” To arrange a demonstration of Homag CNC processing centres, contact Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. 01332 856500 homag-uk.co.uk

CNC processing means that traditional methods requiring significant skill and individual tolerances can be created today with ease. Just a few clicks of a mouse are needed to create complex connections with the utmost precision, enabling bespoke work such as mortised door frames or dovetail joints to be rediscovered on a production scale. Its unique capabilities enable customers to rethink their designs with efficiency in mind, rather than having to work to the limitations of a machine. The Conturex brings economy and craftsmanship back to CNC manufacturing, be it for batch size 1 or mass production. The flexibility of the Conturex brings a level of efficiency to production which can truly slash manufacturing time and processes. 01235 557600 weinig.co.uk

Salice Air – light and functional

Cam-Stays – a strong offering

The latest technical advance from producers of furniture systems Salice is Air. Air is an innovative and functional hinge, characterised by sophisticated design, compactness and very high performance qualities. Like traditional hinges, Air is fully adjustable in three directions and also incorporates an integrated soft close mechanism for decelerated closing or the push self-opening system for handle-less doors. With a thickness of only 10mm, Air is inserted into the cabinet and the door is practically invisible. It is compatible for use with both wooden doors and aluminium-framed doors. Air is available in titanium finish and due to its small size is suitable for numerous applications including kitchens, bathrooms, living and bedroom furniture and display cabinets. Compact, stylish and elegant, Air is the new fusion of technology and aesthetics and marks a new era in the development of opening systems. 01480 413831 saliceuk.co.uk

Ease of use is key for today’s busy lifestyles, Nottinghamshirebased firm Jet Press offers the universal fitting Camloc Cam-Stay. Made from carbon steel, the stays feature a multiple position function for access hatches or panels, machine guards, desk lids, storage boxes, tool and site boxes, hospital and physio beds, display panels and signage and many more applications supporting weights up to 135kg. With two models to choose from there is a Cam-Stay to suit all requirements. The Basic Cam-Stay arm extends from its closed position until it locates into the desired holding position via the tooth catch. To close the unit, simply fully extend the stay before returning it to the closed position. The Basic Cam-Stay is available with five or 10 holding positions to offer increased flexibility. The Reversible Cam-Stay has the added benefit of being able to close the stay at a chosen point of opening, simply by lifting the stay out of the current holding position and closing without the need to fully extend. Six holding positions are available on this model. A demonstration video is available on the company’s website to appreciate the flexibility Camloc Cam-Stays can offer to an installation. jetpress.com

Easy mounting and reliable performance with Tekform drawer Tekform drawer, a family of double wall drawers from Titus, is characterised by a simple mounting procedure and with ConfidentClose that assures a life-long consistent and reliable drawer opening and closing. The fast and simple EasyFix locking system of the front panel connector requires just a hand insertion and a quarter turn of the screwdriver to reliably lock the connection. Its expanding feature allows for repeatable assembly and disassembly of the front panel. User-friendly drawer installation and adjustment Optimal drawer alignment is comfortably accomplished through an intuitive vertical and horizontal adjustment procedure. The rigid drawer and rail design assures drawer stability in open position.

Blum’s Space Tower can be adapted to users’ individual needs

The Space Tower larder unit by Blum – the convenient way to store food For a larder unit that offers plenty of storage space, whose inner pull-outs can be planned and designed individually and that gives users easy access to items from all three sides, then the Space Tower by Blum is to be recomended. This is the convenient and ergonomic way to store food in modern kitchens. Well-thought-out cabinet solutions make optimal use of the storage space available and enhance everyday kitchen workflows. Blum’s practical Space Tower larder unit is a perfect example. It has a door and inner pull-outs that can be planned and designed individually. The larder unit is available in every height, width and depth. Flexible inner dividing systems such as Ambia-Line or Orga-Line organise the interiors. They give clear visibility and securely hold items such as provisions and bottles. Convincing advantages The Space Tower larder unit has full extensions that give users clear visibility and direct access to contents – from all three sides and from above. Tall items, such as bottles can be easily removed from above. Another advantage is that users do not have to pull open the weight of the entire cabinet to remove one item – just open the required pullout. When using high, closed drawer sides, up to 55% more storage space can be created. In addition, each Space Tower inner pull-out has a load bearing capacity of up to 70kg.

FP271_pages.indd 69

Thanks to integrated, soft-close Blumotion, the pull-outs will always close softly and effortlessly. Optionally, they can also be equipped with a Servo-Drive electric motion support system. To implement handle-less kitchens, simply equip doors with the Tip-On mechanical opening support system. Easy assembly All the fittings used for the Space Tower larder unit are either standard fittings from the Tandembox range – Blum’s tried and tested pull-out system – or standard fittings from the Legrabox range – its new box system with straight drawer sides. This ensures that the entire kitchen has a coherent design and yet provides plenty of scope for the design of cabinet interiors. As far as assembly is concerned, the cutting dimensions of the base and back panel of both box systems stay the same. Fronts are simply clipped on. In addition, users are free to choose the desired front. Blum’s Dynalog planning software makes it easy to determine the exact fixing positions of fittings. The software also helps to order the right fittings components for the Space Tower larder unit quickly and simply. And now, Space Tower has been made even easier to use and specify, thanks to the new ‘one box order’ system, which streamlines the ordering process. 01908 285700 blum.com

Combined with the new Legrabox free design option, inner pull-outs have a light and transparent look

Combined with sliding doors, Atira is part of the trend for minimal lines and the merging of spaces

Hettich’s Atira builds on InnoTech’s pedigree The benefits of choice with the efficiency of a platform concept define Hettich’s latest drawer system, InnoTech Atira. This month, Hettich brings its latest doublewalled drawer system, InnoTech Atira, to these shores. It will be complemented by Hettich’s ArciTech, which is already successful in the UK in the premium segment. InnoTech Atira already has a strong pedigree behind it as it builds on the reputation of the globally-successful InnoTech drawer system. It has also received a Special Mention 2016 in the German Design Council Design Awards’ Kitchen category along with its stablemate the InLine S sliding door system which received the same accolade in the Furniture category. The German Design Award is presented for outstanding products that are ground-breaking in the German and international design landscape. The InnoTech Atira drawer system won over the jury with its straight lines, clean contours, colour choices and the versatile interior organisation solutions. It is the perfect evolution of InnoTech, bringing a fresh, contemporary appearance to this cabinet interior classic. Production efficiency and choice Various side elements are offered such as railing, TopSide, which goes under the railing, or the full DesignSide. With choices of colour, rear panel width and guides, there is a flexible and simple route to achieving a huge variety of individual solutions.

FP271_pages.indd 70

But InnoTech Atira combines these attractive options to create differentiation with high cost efficiency thanks to its platform concept. So, for example, easy upgrades from railing to TopSide or DesignSide do not affect drilling positions or the front panel. It is a recipe for complete design freedom. From the partial extension runner offering the perfect entree into double walled drawer systems to a full extension, soft close Silent System or Push to Open solution, the functional aspects of InnoTech Atira based on the renowned Quadro runner follow the same flexible pattern. Less is more interiors We are in the era of the “less is more” interior according to Hettich. The more we merge our living spaces, the more consumers want a kitchen that stands out without shouting out and furniture which complements the kitchen rather than feeling at odds with it. Hettich believes sophisticated drawer systems, combined with sliding doors, one of the company’s other key product areas, will dominate. This is what modern interior design is all about: clean, minimal lines, the merging of spaces, and technology which is both discreet and satisfying. InnoTech Atira is perfectly-paired with Hettich’s sliding door solutions, because when the cabinet is open, the story of clean minimal lines continues: form and function in harmony. Dust explosion protection do’s and don’ts in woodworking and furniture production Kevin Spiess from BS&B shares key tips and advice on ensuring adequate protection from dust explosions and what mistakes to avoid. In woodworking industries, the risk of dust explosion is extremely high. The constant generation of wood dust from machining creates an ever- growing safety risk on a factory site. Different parts of the woodworking process require controlled protection to combat the dangers of dust ignition and in the worst case, explosion. With years of experience in providing protective solutions for dust explosion risk, BS&B Safety Systems has visited and surveyed factories in every process industry all over the world. While owners are making the effort to comply with DSEAR* and ATEX** regulations to ensure their staff’s safety, the execution of preventive measures has not always been correct. Many woodworking and furniture production facilities share common problems when it comes to the installation of protective equipment. In some cases, some firms inadvertently omit to place fail-safes where necessary. Here are examples of the most regularlyencountered errors when it comes to protecting against dust explosion risk in furniture production and wood processing. While these observations come from years of experience, I always advise that manufactures seek the help of a professional to visit the site and make the recommendations bespoke to your factory. Bad housekeeping Perhaps the most obvious activity but the most overlooked – cleaning the dust away. Dust accumulations in the ceiling spaces, beams and walls can fuel an explosion to the point of destroying a factory. Ensure your employees know where the dust accumulation hot spots are and keep them clean. Do not use air sprays to remove dust, this just creates a dust cloud which is a secondary explosion risk hanging in the atmosphere.

Unsafe ducting and pipework Weak explosion ducts can encourage an ignition to transform into a destructive explosion. The strength of explosion vent ducts should be calculated so that they can withstand the maximum pressure of a vented explosion (Pred). Always avoid long horizontal runs of duct work which attract uninterrupted dust build up. No management of hot particle risks Identifiable sources of sparks and other hot particles can and should be detected and redirected or extinguished in situ. The installation of spark detection and suppression systems rapidly and safely eliminates this risk and are vital parts of dust explosion protection for the woodworking industries. Dust explosion severity classifications are measured from St1 to St3. Wood dust has an St2 rating – not the highest explosion severity, yet wood dust can ignite at a fairly low temperature and that makes it a dangerous combustion risk. At the first hint of ignition, a spark detection system can save untold damage. Overlooking isolation of connected equipment If you fit an explosion vent to a dust collector, there must be isolation of the dirty inlet duct and isolation of the clean air outlet duct when it returns to the process area. This is vital because the explosion could propagate along these ducts causing other safety risks to people and equipment. Explosion vent installation errors Do fit an explosion vent, but make sure it’s done properly and that it’s the correct size for your process requirements. Failure to do so will result in a variety of dangerous health and safety risks: • The possible leak of combustible materials from an incorrectly fitted vent results in burning materials being expelled at high pressure. The reach of a flame ball bursting from an incorrectly installed vent is typically between 10 and 30m long and can do serious harm; • Don’t forget to factor in changes to the manufacturing process being used in relation to the size of vent required. If the materials that you are processing have changed and have a higher KSt and PMax value, the force of explosive pressures may increase. Check and recalculate (if necessary) the vent area required and make sure your vent is correctly sized; • Vent ducting must be properly calculated and designed to strict guidelines so that the flame path can escape freely to a safe area. Correct size and length of ductwork is key to the efficient performance of a vent. • Ensure that your vent discharge path cannot possibly endanger nearby personnel. If there is a hazard due to explosion venting, then that area must be clearly indicated with signage and cordoned off; • Do not obstruct the explosion vent path; • Do not try and make your own vent – have it professionally calculated and installed, otherwise you are at risk of erratic and unsafe performance.

A flameless vent Once your vent is correctly installed ensure it is regularly inspected and that the inspection records are visible. Electrical grounding and bonding not in place Electrical sparking in a dusty environment just invites disaster. Ensure that grounding wires are not broken or unconnected. If there is piping across a flexible connection, make sure it is well bonded. This is particularly important when dealing with dusts that have a low ignition rating – it wouldn’t take much to cause a fire or explosion. Absence of risk management Putting risk management strategies into play can mitigate mishaps on the factory floor. It’s important to seek advice from an explosion protection consultant who can provide the right advice on what controls you need for your factory. For example, if installation of safety equipment is not based on measurable and current process requirements, your facility will be under-protected. Similarly, before the installation of safety equipment, carry out a combustible dust test and thereafter review your combustible dust classifications (KSt and Pmax levels) at regular intervals as process operations and materials change. This provision should be incorporated into Management of Change procedures.
