As it stands, the UK is leaving the EU. Over 30 million people voted in the EU Referendum, and in all regions other than London, Scotland and Northern Ireland, more than half those voting decided we should leave – so what happens now, and how will our furniture and joinery businesses be affected? In the short term, as always, it’s about the confidence of the general public, for it is they who determine whether furniture and joinery businesses can sell the products they make in enough numbers to sustain their businesses. Normally, the housing market is a clear bellwether – if it slumps for any period of time, we will see a knock-on effect. Similarly, if the investment markets and institutions start to give UK PLC a wider berth, this too will affect confidence and that would affect the health of our economy. In the short term, both are coming under pressure. I’m sure we all hope, both Leavers and Remainers, that our elected leaders of all persuasion – whoever they turn out to be – can successfully navigate the choppy waters ahead, and help consumers feel confident again and help businesses enjoy a level playing field. Inside this issue, we hear from W16 and Elements, as we look forward to the industry’s biggest event and the only place where manufacturers can see such a diverse range of equipment and products under one roof. In addition to this organiser’s preview, the question is posed – are you up to speed with the latest technology? A very important question of course, but one which is best added to with: how can I compare the latets technology?

These days a healthy number of manufacturers, distributors and dealers have at home events, and whilst these can be useful and an agreeable way to really get to know a particular company, it’s not so easy to compare one brand with a competing one, and to listen to the arguments in close succession. Nowhere, other than a good trade show, can this be easily achieved. Personally, I can’t wait for W16 and Elements at the NEC in October! Elsewhere in this issue, we hear from board giant Egger and its recent manufacturing upgrades in Hexham and take a close look at its latest tranche of product developments. There is also a number of interesting installations featured this including examples from Daltons, Homag, Ney, Kündig, 2020 and Imos3D. There are also updates from Lectra, JJ Smith, Masterwood, SCM, CDUK, Kite Packaging and AFS Biomass. I hope you enjoy the read – and don’t forget to keep up to date with our web information at www.furnitureproduction.net or via Twitter at @FurnitureProdEd.

Manufacturing conditions showing signs of stability Demand in the manufacturing sector was stable and output continued to expand at a solid pace, according to the latest monthly CBI Industrial Trends Survey. The survey of 482 manufacturers reported that total order books strengthened slightly in the three months to June led by the food and drink sector, and motor vehicles & transport. Total export order books likewise remained unchanged, suggesting that the depreciation of Sterling has yet to have a material impact on overseas demand. Output growth continued to be brisk, with firms raising their expectations for the next three months further. Meanwhile, selling prices are expected to be broadly stable in the nearterm. 20% of businesses reported an increase in total orders and 23% a decrease, giving a rounded balance of -2%.

New £1.5m factory extension for Trucksmith Tiverton and Honiton MP, Neil Parish, formally opened a new 20,000ft2 factory unit at Devon-based manufacturer Trucksmith on Friday 27th May. Trucksmith is a UK leader in low-loading Luton van conversions and is an official partner for marques including Renault, Vauxhall and Fiat. Now celebrating its 30th year of production, the firm has expanded its production facility to more than 64,000ft2 to cope with the demand for its vehicles. The new facilities will accommodate the production of up to 25 low-floored Luton vans per week and allow Trucksmith to invest further in research and development into manufacturing technologies which has been central to the success of the business. “Early on, the company identified problems associated with payload in traditional Luton vans. We have developed new techniques to ensure all Trucksmith products provides outstanding payload for this class of low-loading vehicles,” says managing director Daniel Trebble. “We continually invest in equipment and people so we can provide the highest quality services, and we support a range of industries by providing solutions to common delivery and loading challenges,” says Daniel. “Our team has grown by 33% to just under 100 employees in the past year. We have successfully trained and retrained individuals to work across our business, from product design to carpentry to engineering to drivers.” Daniel Trebble welcomed Tiverton and Honiton MP, Neil Parish, to the factory and introduced him to staff after a guided tour of the new facilities. Mr Parish says: “It is fantastic to celebrate such a huge regional success story with this
family-run business now at the forefront of its sector. The business has built a national reputation for designing and building premium commercial vehicle bodies and should be applauded for its success. “Trucksmith is a company of which Devon can be very proud.” He adds: “I am pleased that manufacturing skills are flourishing here in Devon. By taking on trainees – something which I strongly support – Trucksmith is investing in the next generation to continue their proud heritage.” 01884 841055 trucksmith.com

PWS Worksurfaces’ new website
PWS Worksurfaces has launched its newlook website to coincide with the recent updates to its Strata-branded granite and quartz collection. The new site has a strong focus on the expertise of the company’s manufacturing capabilities, the skills of its people and the extensive material portfolio available. The redesigned website follows a period of intensive research to ensure that visitors to the site are left in no doubt about the company’s high standards of workmanship, with the opportunity to see every step of the production process and the care and attention to detail that goes into it. The site is built around the experience and professionalism of the craftsmen, explaining what’s involved in creating a beautiful worktop and, importantly, who does it. A new feature of the site is an enhanced material selector with a search facility to select by material type, colour, application and finish. There’s also a background story on each of the company’s four key categories, granite, quartz, solid surface and timber and the different options available by material. Comments Andrew Langford, marketing manager at PWS: “We are understandably very proud of our worksurfaces manufacturing facility and the focus of our new website is to demonstrate what really sets us apart from our competitors, in terms of the unrivalled expertise of our people, the advanced technology of our machinery and our ability to create distinctive worktops across a broad range of materials. The site, with its intuitive and simple navigation, reflects our exceptional quality, values, latest technologies and knowledge.” pwsworksurfaces.co.uk

Alphacam, the intelligent and intuitive CAD/ CAM software for the woodworking, metal and stone cutting industries, held two successful user-group meetings, featuring the 2016 R2 release of the software, bringing together users from various industries. Taking place at two venues the meetings were focused around Alphacam’s latest technology, enhancements and functionality. Michael Pettit, Alphacam’s EMEA sales manager, reports that many customers who attended the events, were very impressed with the number of major technological upgrades that improve the range of Alphacam functions. He says: “Events like these are a great opportunity for us to show the users the new technology and also what’s coming down the line in the software. It’s nice to take them out of their normal working environment, and not only have a look at what the new functions are but how they would be used in the real world.”
The latest release of the software, Alphacam 2016 R2, was on show which included a number of new and enhanced items providing improvements with automation, machining and feature extraction. Alphacam 2016 R2 also contains a range of general improvements, along with new user interface commands for faster and simpler ways of working. Alphacam belongs to the world-leading CAD/CAM provider, Vero Software Ltd, which is now part of the Hexagon group, a globalleading technology company. I believe it is now the right time to take this step which will clearly set us apart from our competition by offering a bespoke and unique service to both existing and prospective customers. Mr Sutton continued: “Our portfolio includes some of the most recognised decorative panel and timber brands in the world and this new showroom is the perfect platform to showcase the sheer breadth of our offering, all under one roof. “This is a strategic decision for James Latham and one which has been in development for some time. We have had an on-going dialogue with key suppliers who are all backing the initiative and are extremely excited by its potential. We have signed a three-year agreement with the Business Design Centre and as well as investing heavily in the fit-out we are also making a significant investment in developing, training and building our dedicated A&D team.” The fit-out has been cleverly designed to
incorporate a number of James Latham’s focus products and as well as a showroom, the space will also be utilised for networking events, presentations, demonstrations, meetings, training and CPD seminars. Plus, James Latham’s team can use it for hot desking while in London or for showing customers samples. Within walking distance of Angel tube station and only minutes from Kings Cross and Euston, the Business Design Centre was originally built as the Royal Agricultural Hall. Opening in 1862, the Grade II building has the look of a beautiful Victorian train station; a huge clock overlooking the exhibition floor, wrought iron supports and wonderful arched ceiling. Open between 9.30am-5.30pm weekdays, clients can visit James Latham’s showroom to be inspired and gain a greater understanding of the products. 30,000th Combilift handed over at CeMAT Combilift Ltd, the Irish specialist manufacturer of multidirectional forklifts, straddle carriers and other innovative handling solutions for long loads, containers and palletised goods, recently celebrated a milestone in the company’s history. The 30,000th Combilift to roll off the production lines in Monaghan was officially handed over to its new owner during the CeMAT materials handling and logistics trade fair in Hanover, Germany. Managing director Mr Arno Sorger accepted the Combilift C14000 model on behalf of Haslinger Stahlbau, one of the major steel construction companies in Europe. Established in 1949 and headquartered in Feldkirchen in southern Austria, Haslinger Stahlbau also has facilities in Vienna, Munich and Dresden in Germany and Dunavecse in Hungary. Haslinger Stahlbau processes an annual amount of around 40000 tons of steel to realise its varied construction projects – with this figure continuing to rise – and the new C14000 is its eighth Combilift. Various Combilift models with capacities ranging from four-14 tonnes are in operation across its sites to ensure safe and productive handling and storage of its in part very heavy loads. Combilift has some way to go to catch up Haslinger Stahlbau’s longevity, but in terms of growth and success in the materials handling sector it has certainly made its mark since it was established in 1998. Impressive year on year growth has enabled what started as a small
company offering a niche product to now be a major global name. From its headquarters, manufacturing facility and research and development department in Monaghan, Ireland, the 450-strong workforce designs, develops and manufactures a wide range of products which are exported to 75 countries. Combilift MD Martin McVicar comments: “The amount of customisation featured in every model we produce makes the total of 30,000 units manufactured to date a very impressive achievement and I’d like to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of the Combilift team. But of course thanks must also go to customers such as Haslinger Stahlbau who put their faith in our products time and again and thus enable us to continue to be the market leader in our manufacturing segment.” combilift.com

Lectra helps Freedman Seating meet growing demand for its products US-based Freedman Seating will double its production capacity with Lectra’s software and cutting solutions for plain and patterned fabric
Lectra, the world leader in integrated technology solutions dedicated to industries using fabrics, leather, technical textiles and composite materials, has announced that Chicagobased Freedman Seating, a vehicle seat manufacturer, has chosen Lectra to expand its production capacity so as to meet the growing demand for upholstered seating products. Freedman Seating manufactures seats and seating-related products for a variety of transportation means, including buses, trains, boats, delivery trucks, specialty and commercial vehicles.
FP273_pages.14.indd 12
Consistent growth and expansion have earned the familyowned company recognition as the leading manufacturer of transportation seating solutions in the US. A Lectra customer for more than 20 years, Freedman Seating has created 240 jobs since 2011 and today employs close to 750 people. “Our business is growing rapidly, and our production needs to keep pace with that growth,” explains Craig Freedman, president, Freedman Seating. “We would have trusted no one else other than Lectra to help us deliver highquality, well-matched transportation upholstery fast.”
Lectra worked closely with Freedman Seating to understand the company’s needs before recommending a solution. Lectra experts visited the manufacturing facility to assess customer requirements, existing production processes, and working methods. Freedman Seating was already equipped with one Vector®, Lectra’s fabric cutting solution. “This study enabled Lectra to recommend a solution combining a second Vector cutter and Mosaic software. Mosaic automatically compensates for any distortion and adjusts the cutting path, ensuring that patterned pieces match perfectly when assembled.
This saves time and gives manufacturers the flexibility to better manage the diversity of patterned fabrics. “Over the years, we have developed a deep understanding of our customer’s business, and that experience has made us a reliable, trusted business partner,” says Jason Adams, president, Lectra North America. “The resulting solution of two Vector cutters, coupled with Mosaic, not only doubles Freedman Seating’s production capacity, but it also gives the company the ability to develop its cutting room as demand continues to increase.” lectra.com

automotive as well as educational establishments. The powerful but intuitive software is easy for operators to pick up and allows quick access to all machining parameters right at the machine. It can work independently or be fed by other third party CADCAM software.” Redco managing director, Mike Redshaw, has built the company’s reputation over the past 35 years providing high quality, reliable machining services for plastic materials. “During the first few years it became obvious that East Anglia wanted not just a knowledgeable, reliable and competitive plastics stockholder but also a machining service too. We began by subcontracting out all the jobs we won but it was soon apparent that we needed complete control of quality
and lead times if we were to provide the service demanded by our customers.” Mike continues: “We bought a couple of manual lathes and set up what we laughingly called our machine shop – we learned very quickly that this was not enough. We continued to invest in newer and better machines and more highly skilled staff.” Daltons Wadkin has seen increasingly high demand for the Kimla range of CNC machines with sales for 2016 up 80% on last year. “We keep at least one Kimla BPF model in stock, usually with a 2100 x 3100 mm bed which is ideal for nesting full sheets of plastic or wood based panels, says Alex. “I always encourage customers to visit our Nottingham showroom to see the Kimla in operation.
You can only really appreciate the substantial build quality and machining capability when seen in the flesh.” Redco now operate all over the UK and further afield. Mike continues: “It’s been a very stimulating journey for me and it is by no means over yet – a younger generation is taking Redco into other areas of excellence and indeed different parts of the globe. “A number of new products such as acetate, tri-acetate and aluminium composite will ensure the future continues to be exciting and stimulating for all at Redco. The Kimla is a key tool to our growth and we will be looking at purchasing a second later in the year.’ 0115 986 5201 daltonswadkin.com

CutList instructs Ney to deliver the latest edgebanding technology CutList is a fast-growing panel cutting and edgebanding company born out of a need to increase productivity in an existing cabinetmaking business. Edward Birks and Alex Langstaff-Ellis are founding partners in Langstaff-Ellis Cabinet Makers. In 2014, Ed and Alex set up CutList to provide its business – and others like it – with cut and edged panels to increase production without the need for hard-to-find skilled labour. The business has taken off and when the time came to invest in new machinery, CutList knew exactly where to go. CutList use Ney for many things from tooling and equipment to ironmongery and consumables. Ney’s comprehensive showroom in Coventry and its knowledge of the industry made choosing the right edgebander easy. Account manager Paul Pickett guided CutList through the options and the chosen edgebander was the range-topping EBM 117 SLKP
with additional Fusion zero glue line edgebanding option Airtronic. The machine was also upgraded with the options for edging nested panels – with holes – and for processing thicker panels up to 60mm thick. The edgebander was delivered in June this year and since then it has been producing amazing results in a host of materials from standard MFC to Eurolight panels and real wood veneers. Ed explains: “Langstaff-Ellis have been customers of Ney for many years. Their customer service, range of machinery, ironmongery and consumables makes them the perfect partner for anyone in the woodwork industry. “CutList is our latest venture and CutList – providing their customers with the best service and quality with the new EBM Airtronic Edgebander from NEY.
specialises in panel cutting and edgebanding for all businesses large and small and although we started with some older machines, when it came to their replacement, Ney was an obvoius choice. Alex adds: “Although our service is simple, we strive to provide the best service and quality of product available so having the latest technology is key. We did our homework and researched the market and found that the EBM Airtronic Seamless Edgebander gave us the best results.” “Ney has proved itself to be an excellent partner. Their industry knowledge, product range and customer service is excellent. We have just taken delivery of the EBM Airtronic Fusion edgebander of which we are thrilled with the results. The installation and training was simple and comprehensive. We are thankful to Ney for their support in our growth.” ney.co.uk

Leading German kitchen manufacturer switches to 2020 Insight Since early May, German kitchen manufacturer, Hummel Küchenwerk, has been controlling its entire kitchen production with the 2020 Insight software solution. From graphical quote generation to installation planning with subcontractors, all processes are mapped and processed in 2020 Insight.
2020 Insight provides information for cutting optimisation and prepares the labels for further part tracking at the saw “We opted for 2020 Insight,” says Hummel MD, Matthias Flick, “because it is the only product on the market, as far as we know, that provides continuity in production control.” The graphical quote generation facilitates the planning of all types of kitchens which is an important factor for the North German market leader in the B2B sector as it supplies many developers and home building organisations with its products. “In addition to a wide range of variants we also repeatedly receive special or bespoke requests,” Matthias continues. This high variability must also be

taken into account in the secondary processes. Sven Heinrich, head of projects at Hummel explains: “Due to the large number of variants we offer customers, our software requirements were very high. 2020 Insight gave us the option to develop and implement visual workflows which enabled us to respond to all requirements. The flexibility of the solution and the tools provided allowed us to adapt the system so that it fully meets our needs.” With the continuous support and advice from two 2020 employees throughout the whole project, the
first complete kitchen was produced in February as a test run. Correction requests and improvement ideas were developed and implemented as soon as possible in the software solution. “That way we could ensure a smooth transition from the old to the new control system,” says Sven Heinrich. Project colleague, Thorsten Schmidt, adds: “It was also important to us that all transitions between the different departments were clearly defined and that no unnecessary disruptions occurred. All statuses are now available at the push of a button, which has significantly increased transparency and enabled us to be more efficient during production.” 2020spaces.com

Second Skipper brings increased flexibility to Decorative Panels Components Operating from a newly commissioned purpose built factory of some 175,000ft2 Decorative Panels Components has the capacity to produce over 600,000 panels per week.
Pictured: Martin O’Reilly (left) with production manager, Andrew Aistrop Decorative Panels Components offer a diverse range of cut, edged, drilled and shaped panels. Ranging from the high volume manufacture of kitchen and bedroom carcass and fascia panels, to shelving and storage systems for both the decorative and long shelf markets, the choice of panel components is endless. Bulk palletised or fully boxed products to the client’s specification are all available from the same site. Decorative Panels Components (DPC) offer panels to a wide market place that demands flexibility within the production process, the Biesse Skipper 100 is an ideal solution. “The move towards bespoke furniture requires a more aesthetic approach, so the old 32mm drilling pattern is replaced with point to point operation,” says DPC factory manager, Martin O’Reilly. “Customers don’t want to see a surplus of holes, so the machine is flexible enough to create any drilling pattern required. “The original Skipper has been magnificent. Even though the

machine has been running for 132 hours per week for the past seven years – apart from normal wear and tear, it’s been ultra-reliable and is still as accurate now as the day it was installed.” However, with the change of DPC’s product mix, it became a pressure point. “It was the machine with the most loading”, continues Martin, “but because the old machine has been so good, we decided to buy another. The new machine is quicker, with faster cycle times and is even more operator-friendly. The training was all completed in half a day, so the machine was up and running in full production in no time at all. “Both machines have been a great investment without a doubt, we purchased a new machine because of our experience, the reliability and the accuracy of the original machine.” “It’s given us the capacity to reduce hours, confidence to sell more similar panels and the ability to improve customer lead times.” biesse.com

Wayne Geater of Simply Wood with his new Cehisa Compact PCS edgebander Simply Wood was founded by Wayne Geater and originally had great success in general joinery and bespoke cabinetmaking. In recent years, as the demand for solid wood products dropped away, the focus has moved to panel processing. “We operate all over the country supplying to the trade mostly. We don’t advertise or actively promote our services with all business coming from referrals. It is our ability to offer high quality products with very quick delivery times that gives us the edge,” comments Wayne. “Our old hot air edgebander served us well, but with advances in edging and panel technology

I wanted to make sure we could continue to deliver the highest possible standards. As with all my machine purchases, I took some time researching the market before committing to the Cehisa. The machine needed to be compact, capable and flexible. I knew Cehisa by reputation and when I saw the machine demonstrated at Daltons Wadkin it was a clear favourite,” The Compact PCS forms part of the impressive range of edgebanders from Spanish manufacturer Cehisa. At its core the Compact offers edging application from 0.4-3mm, and 5mm solid lippings on panels up to 50mm thick. Building on the standard specification, further options for
pre-milling, corning rounding, scraping and buffing can all be tailored to customers’ requirements. Increasingly popular is the DuoMelt glue unit, designed for quick switch over between EVA and PUR adhesives. The new laser-edge glueless edging application system can be added to the Compact model and above for a perfect finish. Cehisa has been designing and developing edgebander technology for almost 50 years and is currently experiencing its biggest year yet with an explosion in sales across the world and is set to hit 1000 machines for 2016. Sole UK distributor, Daltons Wadkin, has invested in a number
of showroom machines including the Flexy, Compact and Pro models for customer demonstrations. “Cehisa represents a key brand in our panel processing machinery portfolio and, as with the case of Simply Wood, allows us to offer a complete solution for customers looking to cut, drill and edge,” comments Daltons Wadkin sales director Andy Walsh. “Our range of Elcon vertical panel saws, Altendorf sliding table panel saws and Kimla CNC nesting routers can all be seen at our Nottingham showroom.” For more information on the Cehisa range of edgebanders, contact the Daltons Wadkin team. 0115 986 5201 daltonswadkin.com

GLOSSMAX GlossMax High Gloss panels are produced with an advanced unique technology, going through a variety of industrial processes, in which adhesive and UV lacquer is applied to melamine coated MDF or particle boards to achieve a decorative, shiny surfaced wood panel. In the hot coating process that achieves excellent adhesion to the melamine coated surface, PUR (Polyurethane) adhesive coating is applied to the melamine surface. Once the Polyurethane adhesive has gone through chemical curing an outstanding hard surface which is resistant to scratches, impacts and wear is achieved. The PUR substance is also durable against UV rays. The outer layer, which hardens with the UV rays applied directly after, provides an excellent level of gloss. This technology has forged a new path in surface coating, brought forth the natural appearance and texture of solid wood and provided a solution which has simplified the surface finish application. GlossMax panels create modern, graceful furniture combinations with mirrorshine for kitchen, bath, home, office and all other decoration projects.

Homag UK delivers increased quality, reliability and capacity for Mount Industries Mount Industries has been manufacturing quality furniture for over 40 years. Based in Eastleigh, Hampshire, the company takes great pride and passion in every single piece of furniture it makes.
Holzma HPP 300 beam saw – compact and powerful
Mount is a social enterprise for the charity Enham Trust in Enham Alamein near Andover. Over the course of nearly 100 years, the Trust has helped over 20,000 disabled people in the cornerstone areas of their lives – care, housing and employment. “We only use quality raw materials in the manufacture of our product range,” explains Darren Pottinger, Operations Manager for the business. He continues: “And we have invested heavily in technically advanced machinery and software that enables us to respond to bespoke requests and ensures that our products are finished to the highest standard. “The machinery we use not only has to be reliable and provide first class quality results, but it must also be easy to operate for our workforce which includes many disabled people.” Selecting the right machinery “Early in 2015 we recognised the need to make significant investment

in new equipment as our existing saw, edgebander and CNC were no longer keeping pace with our expansion. The saw in particular, was very old and whilst we were very happy with our Weeke Venture 3 CNC, we needed more capacity. “After considering options for the three machines and talking in depth with Andy Potter from Homag UK, we decided to opt for a package from the Homag Group which included a Holzma HPP 300 beam saw, a Weeke Venture 220M CNC and a Brandt Ambition 1660 edgebander. “Andy was really helpful; he made sure that not only did we get the right specification machines for our current and future requirements, but he also brokered a really attractive deal for us.” Holzma HPP 300 beam saw Although the Holzma HPP 300 beam saw is the base model of the 300 series, its specification is anything but basic. It is a compact and powerful saw featuring an

80mm saw blade projection, an exceptionally smooth running saw carriage and low energy consumption. Optional extras include increased cutting height, ascending and vertical post forming packages, pneumatic trim stops, manual angle cuts, high precision laser guide beam, kerfing, a label printer, a stress-release cut option and MagiCut optimisation software. Brandt Ambition 1660 FGC and Weeke Venture 220M The Brandt Ambition 1660 FGC is a single-sided edgebander fully equipped for processing panels from 8 – 60mm in thickness at feed speeds from 8 – 18m/min. Configured with heavy duty premilling units, a pre-melting device for continuous, controlled glue flow, a robust pressure zone and units for trimming and finishing of edges (from 0.4 – 12mm in thickness, in coil or strip form), the 1660 FGC can handle anything thrown at it. The automation package permits fast, accurate change overs whilst a grooving unit adds an extra level of productivity to the machine. At the heart of Mount Industries production facility is the powerful Weeke Venture 220M CNC router. With a working width of 1600mm it handles all of the company’s panel requirements and is capable of routing, drilling (vertical and

The Venture 220M is equipped with a 12kW four axis router motor, 19 tool positions, 18 drills, a grooving saw and Weeke’s tubeless vacuum clamping system for 100mm high vacuum cups, so it can cover all of Mount Industries’ machining requirements. Software – the key to success Darren Pottinger again, “Whilst the
price was clearly important for us, we also placed a very high priority on practicality. We wanted a simple interface that would enable our workforce to operate the machinery easily. Homag’s woodWOP and Magi-Cut optimising software are very intuitive. Magi-Cut enables us to do all the sizing work in the office and then send the job direct to the saw, so it’s very efficient and saves time. “Once the new equipment was

installed our team had software training at Castle Donington on the Magi-Cut software and then two days training at our factory for both the Holzma saw and Brandt edgebander. “The training enabled our team to hit the ground running and the results they are accomplishing with the new machinery are first class. The Homag equipment is extremely reliable and the quality of the finished work pieces more than meets our expectations. “The dependability of the machines gives us peace of mind too. All the machines run reliably and on the odd occasion there is an issue, Homag’s superb after sales service means it is quickly put right.” A partnership with Homag UK “With these new machines we can handle more complex jobs than before and also deliver bigger contracts in less time which in itself will help us attract new customers to the business. “It’s not just about the machines though; for us, the relationship with Homag UK is critically important. The team at Castle Donington are all very helpful; they are open and honest, making dealing with them a pleasure. Their technical liaison man, Kevin Kay, is particularly supportive which is a great help when it comes to getting the best out of the equipment,” concludes Darren. Hawk takes off with imos software Hawk Furniture is a privately-owned family business established in 1988 by Glen Lincoln. In this article, Glen gives us an insight into how his business has evolved and why software has been so instrumental in Hawk’s success.
As a manufacturer of office and residential furniture, Hawk Furniture has grown consistently and now employs 60 staff with a turnover of £5m per annum, selling products to over 100 furniture dealers all over the UK and Ireland with some exposure as far afield as the Far East. The company prides itself on everything being manufactured in-house, both metalwork and woodwork, at its manufacturing plant in the heart of East Yorkshire. The goal has always been to outsource as little as possible in the hope of increasing reliability to its customers, and that is why investment in machinery and manufacturing processes have been crucial in gaining a reputation
FP273_pages.14.indd 26
for being one of the most reliable manufacturers in the industry. Hawk aims for zero damages and 100% of deliveries on time, with actual figures being within 0.05%. Milestones for the company have been the installation of various machines in the factory, with the introduction of the first BAZ machine in 1999 – machines that automate the making of shaped desks cutting down production of one top from 30 minutes (when done manually) to six minutes, and the powder-coating plant in 2006, allowing freedom and flexibility to produce metalwork in any colour. The most recent machinery investment was in 2012 with the installation of the laser machine and press brake; two machines
that have been vital to the R&D department helping with prototyping new components and producing new products while saving costs. The latest investment in 2014 was the introduction of imos which has improved the efficiency of the design process and allowed Hawk to present more professionally. Responsible for the growth of the company is commercial director Johnny Medd, a 32-year-old with a passion for marketing and most adrenaline-based sports such as snowboarding, rock-climbing and cycling/downhill mountain biking. Originally starting out with a career in sales, the move to marketing was made after the creative process was found to be more appealing. Gaining a degree in the field
together with the experience in sales, allows for a solid understanding of how the business process works and innovative marketing campaigns are now a fundamental part of Hawk’s success. “Recent product developments have been the release of two new height adjustable desk systems,” explains Johnny, “covering the mid-range and higher ends of the market and using world-renowned Linak actuators. “These products have only been released May 2016 so the decision was made to exhibit this October at one of the world’s biggest office furniture exhibitions, Orgatec, in Cologne, Germany. With the release of new ranges and the exhibition,

Hawk is expecting significant growth in 2017. A showroom in Clerkenwell, London, is also being discussed as a possible expansion strategy for 2017.” In terms of being distinctive among its competitors, how does Hawk set itself apart? “The company doesn’t have just one USP. A combination of service, quality, value and reliability are all critical aspects that contribute to Hawk’s success.” Hawk’s furniture is made using a combination of CNC machines. Orders are collated using optimisation software to get the least wastage. Packs of MFC board are loaded onto the saw and cut as per the optimisation programs, where they are then taken to the edgebanders and drills. The production line then takes the drilled panels to insert any required fittings or to the assembly line where products are built, checked for quality, then sent to the warehouse ready for despatch. All orders are made for delivery and there are over 50,000 product variations. Hawk has a minimum of two or three of every stage of woodworking machinery. This is done for reliability so that if a machine breaks down the order is not delayed to the customer. Currently Hawk has the capacity to expand by another 40% without the need for additional machinery, however, with the upcoming expansion plans this may
FP273_pages.14.indd 27
change as soon as 2018. Looking at developments in the market, Hawk says that economic uncertainty is the biggest threat to the manufacturing industry, and it has seen repeated temporary dips in business at political crossroads such as a change in Government. So whilst Hawk might be bucking the trends by being extremely busy at the moment, the general theme at the minute is that the office furniture industry was very quiet in the lead up to the to the EU referendum. Asked whether software had been a positive influence for creating the optimum link from the design to the machine, Johnny emphatically agrees: “Yes, massively! imos has also allowed the company to grow without the need for additional staff. It provides more professional and more detailed drawings which is essential in reducing problems with the customer understanding exactly how their product will be made. Hawk realised fairly early on that Imos was ideal for its requirements: “The imos representative, Adam Bumpsteed from in3D Software, visited Hawk and demonstrated its capabilities. The attractive features and also the payback period were decisive factors, as Imos saved the need for a product designer and a product programmer, and allowed the product designer to concentrate on other parts of the job,” explains Johnny.
In terms of how the business utlises imos, Hawk has CAD and CAM modules to produce drilling patterns for the machines in the factory. “It receives an enquiry for a bespoke product from the customer and a drawing is produced for the customer to sign off. If and when the customer places the order, it is processed into our system and the relevant drilling patterns are sent to the drills. A costing module would be beneficial in future as it would allow for greater accuracy which is important especially on larger jobs. Johnny says Hawk took a steady, phased approach to bedding in the new software: “Initially the product was used for simple, non-standard items, such as a bookcase at a specified height. When the software – and user programming – was known to be correct, more items were gradually added and eventually more and more
complicated products. By the end of 2014 the programmers were up to speed and now, can undertake most work with ease.” Of course, new software tends to create a number of questions and issues as company’s adapt and refine processes. “To begin with, the support service was used very often in both ironing out bugs and help with using the product, via telephone with online remote control support,” says Johnny. “but the service is great and was vital in ensuring a smooth transition.” In terms of how Hawk uses imos today, every order or enquiry received for non-standard products is completed with imos and eventually the company expects imos software will be used for all standard products, too. Rosindales buy unbeatable Turanlar edgebander from CDE Machinery Rosindales is a Bradford-based company boasting a significant package of manufacturing skills built up over many years. The company has an extensive range of machinery and last year it decided that to meet increasing customer demand it needed to invest in a larger edgebander, capable of producing quality on a regular and long-term basis.
Turanlar T-EB601 to Rosindales specification The usual suspects, new and secondhand, were investigated but Rosindales kept coming back to the Turanlar range offered by CDE Machinery. Turanlar, a third generation family company manufacturing woodworking machinery in their modern factory near Ankara in Turkey, offers edgebanders to meet the needs of all those wishing to apply up to 3mm edging – perhaps 85% of the market. Turanlar’s machines are heavy duty, reliable and equipped with electrics, motors, electronics and pneumatics from Italy, France and

Germany. CDE Machinery’s Nigel Smith points out: “Of particular significance, is that they will be installed on the customer’s site by us, with training and a 12-month warranty included for between 25% and 40% less than similar machines from Germany or Italy. The result is a quicker payback, increased productivity, enhanced profits and a more secure business.” Rosindales’ Sharon Rosindale explains: “While we’ve known CDE Machinery for many years, and trust their judgement, an investment as crucial as this
required us to research the market. However, we decided that the Turanlar 601 ticked all the boxes and we are delighted to have acquired this superb machine that is unbeatable value for money.” Rosindales offer a manufacturing service to the flooring industry, the retail, hotel and leisure sectors – and for exhibition and POS needs. The company will produce bedroom and kitchen furniture and all that is required to fit out student accommodation. In addition to product from Rosindales’ edgebanders; routing, sawing, dowelling and tenoning is
available as is a complete design and proto-typing service from its team of experienced staff. Impressive new mechanism adds dynamic possibilities Spotted at ZOW earlier this year, the CM4070 Casetur mechanism creates added functionality to furniture parts – when applied horizontally, it is possible for surfaces or furniture parts to be rotated in that plane, where the moved part remains in the horizontal layer. In the illustration featured here, a movable bench top can be rotated outwards from the top of a shelf or side drawer. The CM4070 can be applied to all sorts of indoor furniture applications where the necessity to hide a bench top is required. The man behind this innovation is Ben Casetur, a young engineer who studied at the Technical University of Berlin. “When I moved to Munich, I started furnishing my apartment and noticed I had not enough space for a shelf and at the same time for a work desk, which I would only need occasionally. I tried to think of a space-saving solution to combine a side shelf with a work desk. “I imagined a desk that could be rotated in and outwards and it had to have a square shape to fit in a corner. I browsed all furniture supplier catalogues that were available at the time and was unable to find a technical solution to meet all these requirements. I found many solutions with just a round rotating disk, but that wouldn’t
FP273_pages.14.indd 34
do the job. So I started to get more involved and knew I had to design my own mechanism. “Some time later, I had a moving principle which could do the job. Then I had my first mechanism prototype, built and tried it on a simple desk shelf combination. From then on, I kept myself interested in solutions for small living spaces. Ben’s CM4070 mechanism is impressivley executed: it’s made of steel, aluminium, wheelers and plastic components. It can be installed to furniture where a horizontal table rotation in corner scenarios is required – as part of a multifunctional furniture. The applicable furniture width is 48 to 70cm, the length of the desk is irrelevant. The height of the desk can also be chosen independently, though it is required to have a side leg supporting the desk, with wheels or gliders underneath the side leg, to support the movement. The mechanism can be installed after milling the shape of the base into the top of the supporting furniture – the milling depth is 16.5mm. Other than that, users need 15 screws and the mechanism is all set up to rotate the desk. The movement of the CM4070 is particular in the way that it rotates a rectangular table in a corner, something that is normally not possible because of the obstructing walls around. Therefore the CM4070 carries out a two-step movement: first the work desk is moved away from the walls, to create the required space for a rotation and then the rotation can be carried out. Ben says the feedback so far has been positive. “I have done two fairs so far, the inventor fair IENA 2015 in Nuremberg, where I received a bronze medal for my invention. Then at ZOW in February this year, the first official supplier fair. The feedback has been great, I had visitors from Europe and from all over the world. “A lot of companies have visited my stand that need such a mechanism for special solutions. I had a great feedback from carpenters that mentioned my product to be trustworthy because of its solid and strong design. “Many kitchen companies have started to test my mechanism and some are thinking to show a kitchen application with my mechanism on their next furniture fair stand. Also a few distributors from Europe and a real estate furnishing company from overseas has started to negotiate with me.” And what of Ben’s position in the UK market: “From the UK, I had a number of kitchen and furniture designers visiting my stand at the ZOW fair. As I understand it, made-to-measure
furniture has a big market share in the UK with bespoke furniture manufacturers producing customised solutions for different spaces ... and their new solutions that fit small spaces can be very beneficial. “I am also about to sign up for the W16 in Birmingham, the biggest supplier fair for furniture and joinery manufacturers in the UK and I hope to have some applications with my mechanism exhibited by future clients next year on the design fairs around London. Through these fairs I want to get more visibility for the CM4070 mechanism and hope to find a distributor and sales people for UK. “In the last months I have selected various producers for each part and the mounting. Now I want to establish a sales network through distributors in various countries and external sales people as the interface to industry. When this is all set up, I think it is time for a next product.” casetur.com

Innovation is the watchword in Egger’s product range The trend for realistic, textured-woodgrain kitchen surfaces first seen in high-end German and Italian ranges is now firmly established in the UK market. Demand for MFC panels with deep synchronised textures, and the look and feel of rustic raw timber, has soared – leading Egger to invest heavily in additional production facilities at its Northumberland site. In recent years, the company has introduced synchronised pore décors, where print and texture align to create a perfectly registered finish. Characterised by knots, saw marks and planking it gives the board a natural feel almost indistinguishable from real wood. Egger UK’s head of décor developments, Elliott Fairlie, says: “Within our Zoom range, what we describe as our ‘Feelwood’ textures have been
FP273_pages.14.indd 36
extremely popular. These authentic new designs feature a double paper layer and highly-realistic gloss levels, creating a depth and realism previously only available from a veneer or solid timber. “Substantial recent investment in additional production capability for these products in the UK, rather than importing from sister plants in Europe, means our customers can expect shorter lead times, more flexibility on sizes and smaller minimum order quantities.” Demand from manufacturers for its Feelwood designs has also led Egger to launch a new, carefully-curated collection of its most authentic, deeply-textured, melamine-faced chipboard panels. And by bringing the 10 premium MFC décors together with perfectly-matching laminates in the
standalone Feelwood collection, it believes it will make it easier for designers and specifiers – with new marketing and point-of-sale materials. “Whether it’s an on-trend kitchen, a hotel bedroom or an office interior – demand for something that looks and feels like real wood continues to grow,” Elliott says. “But the advantages our products have, apart from price, is that you get surfaces that are durable, sustainable, main10ance-free and offer colour continuity now and in the future. Egger is the first wood-based materials manufacturer to offer synchronised pore – where the textured finish aligns with the grain itself – across all of its boards. The new Feelwood collection includes hardwearing laminates and sleek compact laminates as well as melaminefaced chipboard.

H3326 ST28 Grey Beige Gladstone Oak – close up Feelwood is available in 10 décors, some brand new introductions and others a fresh take on popular classics – including Halifax Oak and Sepia Gladstone Oak. But common to them all is the authenticity theme – reflected in Egger’s advertising strapline for the new range: “What if I told you this wasn’t real timber…” Available double-sided with both surfaces deeply textured, the Structure 27 and Structure 28 décors also have a single-sided option with a nonsynchronised reverse for where a lower-cost product is required. Egger’s quest for ever-more-realistic, innovative products for furniture manufacturers is also amply demonstrated in its worktop range – where it was the first supplier to offer synchronised pore worktops combining the natural look and feel of solid wood with all the durability, care and main10ance benefits of laminate. Launched last autumn, its revamped worktop range has had a major impact on the sector. “The role of the kitchen is changing, with home owners increasingly looking for open plan spaces that are co-ordinated to create the right look and feel for multifunctional living,“ adds Elliott. “Creating that co-ordinated look requires materials that either match or complement the worktop. “And because Egger supplies the materials that
H3326 Grey Beige Gladstone Oak are made into doors, carcasses, shelving, end panels, upstands and plinths, the resources exist to bring the co-ordinated look together.” The decision to retain a tight postformed edge in the Contemporary range rather than move completely over to the even more-fashionable square-edge profile, reflects feedback from customers and installers that shows there remains a strong demand for this type of worktop. Using a high-density protective layer along the front of the core board creates an edge that is less susceptible to damage from impact, a vulnerable spot on some postformed worktops, whilst the tight 3mm radius on the postformed edge gives a contemporary look. For those looking for something even more ontrend, the new square-edge Premium range has a sharper, fashionable look and is available in 12 décors. The woodgrain and gloss décors are all 38mm, whilst the six stone and ceramic décors are available in a sleek 25mm thickness. As well as offering the sleeker, thinner worktop look that is growing more popular, it gives the opportunity to better-replicate the unique visual appearance of granite and stone. Premium tops are available in 4100 x 650mm single edged or 4100 x 920mm double edged, using 1.5mm ABS edging instead of 2mm to create an even more realistic look. egger.co.uk

For any business to remain competitive, it must invest in its own future. And in the surfacing market, Egger’s record of investment and achievement help it maintain its leading position with first class maunfacturing facilities creating innovative and technically-advanced products which regularly set new standards for the surfacing industry.
Egger UK continues to invest and innovate at its Hexham factory Massive investments in impregnation and lamination lines are designed to ensure furniture manufacturers continue to have access to some of the industry’s most stylish, and highest-quality, wood-based materials. After spending more than £100m in 2006/7 creating what was Europe’s most-advanced wood-panel manufacturing site, Egger UK could have been forgiven for sitting back and resting on its laurels. But in fact, since then, the company has spent almost the same again on its factory in Hexham, Northumberland – with a string of investments in new buildings, plant and equipment. All are designed to keep it at the forefront of chipboard manufacturing and product innovation. The business is part of an international, privately-owned group of companies – headquartered in Austria – with 17 European manufacturing plants producing a wide range of materials including melamine-faced chipboard (MFC), medium density fibreboard (MDF), laminates, OSB (orientated strand board), laminate flooring and timber. The Hexham site was the first foreign plant investment for the Egger Group. Egger UK has approximately 650 employees in Hexham and 100-plus at its chipboard production facility in Barony, Ayrshire. The company has an annual turnover in excess of £250m and is the largest manufacturing employer in Northumberland. Although it has been producing raw chipboard in the UK for more than 30 years, and is a major customer of commercial harvesting operations in nearby Kielder Forest, much of its recent investment has been in its value-added products – with around £25m spent on upgrading its impregnation and lamination lines. “In the impregnation department, cellulosebased décor papers are impregnated with low-viscosity amino resins to form semi-cured thermosetting sheets suitable for laminating onto particleboard,” explains upgrading plant manager Stephen Romano. “Each roll of paper weighs more than a ton, is over 5km long and produces over 1000 sheets – enough for 500 boards. Depending on the size of the production run, rolls can be used several times with unused raw paper sealed in polythene
before going back into storage. “Pre-printed or pre-pigmented base paper is used, and each decor has its own production specifications to control the resin content, moisture and cure of the paper so as to ensure its quality during and after the lamination process. “Each new paper roll received from thirdparty suppliers is colour-matched under artificial daylight D65 against a group-controlled master sample. This standardised test ensures the colour is matched in the same conditions each and every time.” Impregnation lines from leading supplier VITS Technology GmbH are the machine of preference across the Egger Group – with knowledge on setting up VITS lines, gained in one location, shared with other plants. This was illustrated recently, when staff from Hexham went to Russia to support the commissioning of new VITS impregnation lines at the Egger factory in Gagarin – training local engineers in how to get the optimum results from
the equipment. Over the last four years, Egger has upgraded its two VITS lines at Hexham, installed a new glue kitchen, automated loading racks and an air cleaning system. The VITS upgrades have increased speed, and improved resin application, enabling heavier papers to be impregnated without any significant time lost. Normally, the heavier the paper the slower the line speed, as more drying is needed. The automated loading racks reduce the risk of damage while the new industry-leading biological exhaust-air cleaning system reduces energy consumption and has best-in-class emission levels. “On VITS 1 & 2, the process uses what is known as a double dip system,” added Stephen. “After the first coat of resin, the paper passes through five flotation driers and the second coat is then applied at the centre section of the machine. The paper then passes through the remaining six flotation driers.
“Elizabeth, or the E Line, can produce over 300 panels per hour, which equates to approximately 14 loads per day. This is compared to the other lines that produce a maximum of around 160-200 panels per hour”
FP273_pages.14.indd 38
07/07/2016 14:36
www.furnitureproduction.net
“Upon leaving the driers, the paper passes over a number of cooling rollers to lower the temperature of the paper, and stop the curing. It then goes through the guillotine and can be cut into various lengths. “To create the synchronised pore products, our Egger VITS lines have online cameras to control the exact length and cut points of the papers as they are impregnated. These cameras monitor the length and width so the papers are an exact match for the press plates in the lamination department. “An underlay paper is also produced on the VITS lines, which prevents the paper from cracking during the lamination process – due to the high pressure used to produce Feelwood and synchronised pore products as well as helping to maintain the correct product properties.” All papers are produced upwards-facing. However, the turner at the end of the impregnation line has the ability to rotate the papers onto another pallet so it can be downwards-facing for the reverse side at lamination. The waste heat from the ovens is fed back into the lines through a series of heat exchangers and the moisture removed goes to the biological cleaner before scrubbing. Commissioned in 2011, the VITS 1 line is heated by gas. The more modern VITS 2 line was commissioned in 2015 and is heated by thermal oil – using energy generated on-site in Egger’s CHP biomass plant that burns sawdust, MDF and other waste materials from the recycling and production processes. This is supplemented with waste heat from the resin plant on site which generates heat as part of the resin manufacture. Both VITS lines are specified to run at a speed of 90m/min. The next stage in the process sees the paper make its way through to the lamination department, and onto one of five lamination lines where the impregnated paper is pressed onto sheets of chipboard to create furniture and construction grade boards. All given female names – Alma, Bridgette, Claire and Daisy – the most recent lamination line, Elizabeth, was installed in 2012 at a cost of £12m and named to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The resin in the paper, applied during the impregnation stage, acts not just as an adhesive between the paper and the board, but forms a sealed surface to protect the board and is responsible for its hardwearing qualities. Paper of the same weight and resin base
Investment agenda • After spending more than £100m in 2006/7 creating what was Europe’s most-advanced woodpanel manufacturing site, Egger UK has spent almost the same again on its factory in Hexham, Northumberland • Much of Egger’s recent investment has been in its value-added products – with around £25m spent on upgrading its impregnation and lamination lines. • Over the last four years, Egger has upgraded its two Impregnation lines at Hexham, installed a glue kitchen, automated loading racks and an aircleaning system. • The most recent lamination line, Elizabeth, was installed in 2012 at a cost of £12m and named to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

is added to both sides of the board, either one décor sheet per side or one décor and a balancing paper per side. This ensures the board does not bow, and also acts as a cushion to prevent cracks on deep structures. “The technical term for the surface finish of the board, the structure, is created by special hard-chromed plates within the press,” says Stephen. “In total we have 55 of these plates producing a range of structures including matt, gloss, diamond, office and waveline. One line is dedicated to creating high gloss boards, and the structural non-slip Egger Protect flooring, which is then cut and finished in the tongue and groove plant. “During lamination, boards go through various presses between 170-200°C and each takes approximately 25 seconds – although higherquality panels can take longer to get the desired finish. “Elizabeth, or the E Line, can produce over 300 panels per hour, which equates to approximately 14 loads per day. This is compared to the other lines that produce a maximum of around 160-200 panels per hour. The actual output depends on the structure and resin combination, with higher quality product taking longer to produce. “The lines normally produce a single large board – up to 5.6m long – which is then cut in half to produce two panels after the press.” Rigorous quality control is an important part of Egger’s commitment to delighting its customers. As well as the visual checks that take place, there is also a range of other quality tests undertaken by the two people on each line – an inspector and an operator. At the start of every order, a test board goes through the line to make sure the impregnated paper is of good quality. A bow test is carried out to ensure the board has a less than 2mm in 1000mm tolerance. The ‘graphite test’ is done to make sure the surface of the board is sealed so stains and marks can be wiped off. And, finally, the curing test ensures the thermoset plastic surface has cured correctly – undercure means the board surface is too soft and over-cure means the surface could potentially crack. One of Egger’s biggest technical challenges is in the production of synchronised pore structures – particularly its deeply-textured Feelwood collection. (see product update story on previous pages) Producing synchronised pore – where the pattern in the plate matches exactly the pattern in
the specially-made papers, creating a matched look and feel to the finished boards – is the task of E Line. Different décors and structures can run on different lines, but it is E Line that has the ability to manufacture deeper textures such as ST36, multilayer constructions and producing synchronised pore textures, where required. Synchronised pore comprises four papers and a board in the middle. This sandwich of papers and board is prepared, before the press, by automatically transporting a reversed paper then an underlay onto a conveyor belt – using air jets and static electricity to make sure papers are in the right position. Boards are lifted on top of the papers with an automated vacuum lifter, then transported to the next part of the process where another underlay and décor paper are placed on top. Static electricity is applied, to make sure the papers do not move as they are transported down the line, to prevent damage to papers and misalignment of the board. Three cameras then check register marks in the décor paper to align the board and paper sandwich to match the press plate – and there are three axes of movement the inspector can adjust to ensure the alignment is correct. The actual press consists of a heated fixed base onto which a cushioning mat and press plate are held, with the board and paper placed on the press plate and a hydraulically-operated heated press plate and cushion mat used to press down on the board. Heat is provided by a thermal oil network that passes heated oil through a matrix into the press to distribute the heat evenly. The heat plate is pushed down at a specified pressure to fuse the paper and boards together, creating a sealed surface and imprinting the structure into the board. Synchronised pore boards get a final check to ensure the alignment of paper to plate before the belt conveyor receives the finished boards. The top side is visually inspected then the inspection tilter lifts the boards to allow a close look at the underside. Finished boards are transported through the star cooler and can then be cut in two and stacked via roller conveyors. Packs are then banded with polyester straps and a cardboard cover fitted, along with Eurolight bearers, before the finished pack is moved by forklift truck into the warehouse facility where it awaits delivery to the customer. egger.com

3D-Space-Wave – a different perspective on embossing
In the form of an outstanding new option for supplementing furnishing designs, Döllken once again demonstrates its pioneering know-how when it comes to creating new edgeband products. The new 3D-Space-Wave range not only looks fantastic and stylish, these edgebands are real eye-catchers and will considerably enhance the appearance of any piece of furniture. In addition, they have a number of special features. The wave patterning integrated in the band
surface creates a remarkable impression of depth. The patterning is actually embedded in each band while these also have a high gloss surface finish. This means that they can not only be used to reinforce the appearance of more space but they also have easy-to-clean surfaces. Moreover, applying the 3D-Space-Wave bands is child’s play as both front and back surfaces are smooth so that milling, particularly when it comes to fitting and corner pieces, is unproblematic.
3D-Space-Wave edgebands can be supplied from stock in four fashionable colours – stainless steel, titanium, old bronze and aluminium – in the dimensions 23 x 1.3mm (ideal for fronts) and 43 x 1.5mm (ideal for worktops) allowing the ability to use this new product now to prepare unique items of furnishing. Döllken can also supply its 3D-Space-Wave edgebands in customised versions and other colour tones on request, supplied in just a few weeks. doellken-kv.com

Startech CN, NC universal drilling and grooving machine Startech CN has been designed for the small- and medium-sized woodworking shops and for larger companies that produce customised individual products. It is also seen as ideal for companies with in-house prototype design and development departments. Thanks to the seven independent vertical spindles, the spindle and saw blade in X, plus the possibility to drill in Y, finished furniture elements can be produced without operator intervention to adjust the worktable and machine set-up according to the panel dimensions. Startech CN is a user-friendly compact drilling machine (only 4m²) which can be installed in a small space. This new SCM machine is ideal for flexible production: a real advantage as it allows a combination of customised craftman-like machining with the precision of semi-automatic production. The new Startech CN machines work pieces up to 3050 x 800mm through the progressive and sequential panel positioning by a suction cup with intake air vacuum; furthermore, the right and left guide facilitates accurate machining utilising the two stop arrangement, similar to that used on high end CNC’s.
The drilling head positioned above the panel allows for precise machining with a reliable reference. Thanks to the distinctive drilling from the top, the Startech CN gives a high and steady level of precision which can be verified in the panel assembly phase. In fact, the system uses the outside of the panel as a reference and thus any differences in thickness are on the inside of the cabinet. The Startech CN operating group allows extreme flexibility in processing on the four side faces: dowelling holes, upper surface (vertical spindles, bit tool); lateral dowelling holes, lateral surfaces (horizontal spindles, bit tool); horizontal grooves (blade); hinges holes (vertical spindles, tool tip countersink). The machine is controlled by an NC with a touch screen colour display and self-diagnosis/ signalling system of errors or damages. This includes simple head tooling and machining cycle programming with automatic optimisation. The possibility to save and import working programs allows the machine to repeat complete drilling cycles with absolute precision and rapidity eliminating possible errors. 0115 9770044 scmgroup-uk.com

London-based desginer/maker opts for Kündig solution Michael Northcroft is a British furniture designer and maker with an international reputation for excellence. All the furniture is made at the extensive London factory and showrooms located near London’s Olympic Park. Founded by managing director, Michael Northcroft, in 1982, the company has built up an impressive exclusive client list who, like Michael himself, demand the very best. To achieve this, Michael invests in machinery: along with a brand new saw and a brand new edgebander, he has invested in a Kündig Brilliant-2 1600 REd sander, purchased from Kündig Ltd’s authorised agent, A12 Machinery of Essex. “I use Albert [Holland of A12] because he has the right machines,” Michael said. “The former sander was past its sell by date,” Michael told Furniture & Joinery Production. “It was also only 1100mm wide, and we needed a larger sander because we are making increasingly larger high end furniture to fit the space in our clients’ homes.” The Kündig sander is 1600 mm wide. Michael had a short list of two manufacturers: the Kündig won out on a number of points. “ The machine has an excellent reputation. I also like the stability of the management at Kündig and hence the high standard of quality control,” Michael said.
“I also checked with service engineers what their experience was between the two manufacturers: they ticked the Kündig box. And I am more used to working with a Kündig: we had one many years ago which was a lovely, simple, heavily built machine, so I had a predisposition to Kündig at the beginning. “There is a certain logic to the design. If someone gets the concept right and thinks about it at the early stage, you get a better product. You can tell that Kündig has been through that process repeatedly over the decades. The sander has its own computer, so our operators don’t have to get into the intricacies: things are preset. They only need to worry about how much to remove, at what speed, with which belts and how many heads. “The Kündig is an expensive beast, but you do get a high quality job out of it. “We make very high quality furniture. Our client base includes many international stars, performers, sports people around the world so we need high quality sanding. The furniture is tailored to their homes and the quality has to be really good. We also use a lot of exotic veneers and woods in our furniture. The Kündig minimises ripples and defects in high class lacquers. “We also sand our solid wood components on it. A
FP273_pages.14.indd 44
multitude of solid wood components go into our furniture. The Kündig is highly accurate: you get the dimension out that you set the machine to. There is no burning, you get a very clear finish and it is wonderfully trouble free. “We produce quality from the log to the finished furniture, so we need the very best in terms of machinery to minimise the rejection rate. It is inefficient to have to send things back to the cabinet makers: and the Kündig sander has removed pretty much all of that agro. “The machine is quiet: you don’t have to wear ear defenders! If you can create a quiet, dust free machine shop, with natural daylight, that is lovely for the guys. Some processes are inherently noisy so ear defenders are required, but it is better for the men if it is possible to work without them. “It is a really good machine, I am really pleased with it. I would not recommend it if you have a really tight budget, but if you need a really high quality machine that is hassle free, the Kündig is excellent and yes, I would recommend it. “It is also a really easy machine to use. It is nice and wide, and can sand components 1.5m wide. It has a much higher quality finish: there are no unsanded pieces. The Kündig sands the whole surface in one pass, and it has never sanded through the workpiece. We are also reassured because we have known the chap who services the sander for a long time, not that we have had any issues in terms of maintenance. “Buying the best quality machines works out cheaper in the long run, if you look after it. Machines such as the Kündig make the logic for manufacturing in the UK,” Michael concludes. 0845 833 0565 kundig.co.uk

Bandsawing moves into the 21st century The humble bandsaw has for many years been one of the most important machines used by both small and large solid wood furniture manufacturers, and in many cases some workshops will be using two, three or more machines, each one needing a dedicated, highly skilled operator.
The bandsawing operation requires multiple templates for manual markingout of the timber to be cut. In addition the working process requires the operator to be extremely vigilant in keeping his hands away from the cutting blade. Now thanks to the MZ Project range of copy and CNC bandsawing centres the whole operation is quicker, more accurate and a lot safer. The key to the success of the MZ machines is the automatic angling of the sawblade which on the copy machine is ±45°, while on the CNC models it is ±90°. On the copy machines there is the patented four template tracing device which is independently controlled by the machine and the twisting of the blade. It allows for the same shape and size of timber (or board ) to be cut as the template fitted.
FP273_pages.14.indd 46
The arrangement of unusual shaped or mirror imaged pieces gives the facility to optimise both the production and material. The three models of machine in the copy range, Quater, Hopper and Universal are all equipped with a simple-to-use 5.7in colour touch screen control unit. From here the operator can create and memorise cutting programs including carriage feed speeds, number of required cuts, cuts produced etc. The program memory is quick to access and the time to change from one program to another is just a couple of minutes, including the change of templates. The Quater model has a manual operation that allows the operator to position the timber if a defect has to be cut around. The Hopper has fully automatic moving of the ‘clean’ timber or board meaning all the operator has to do is load the machine and press the cycle button.
The Universal offers the best of both worlds as it can be operated in manual or automatic mode. All machines have the choice of either a 1300 or 2000mm cutting length with a cutting height of up to 100mm. Options include an overhead laser for material positioning and an out-feed return conveyor system for the cut parts. The CNC models require no templates at all, instead all that is required is for DXF component drawings to be imported and the resident IMAGO software does the rest. It takes care of all the shapes and dimensions for the new workpiece program, optimises material usage and cutting time along with the possibility to simulate the cutting cycle to ensure the program is error-free. All three machines in the CNC range, Basic, Universal and Hopper have the added advantage of the automatic angling of the saw ±90°, meaning even the most complex-shaped components can be cut. Cutting capacities are the same as the copy range, but longer cutting lengths can be specified on request. In addition the Hopper can be specified with an NC drilling unit. For the volume cutting of chair/sofa frame parts from sheet material MZ also manufactures the top-of-the-range Pluris, which in addition to the bandsaw blade has a CNC-controlled router and drilling head. MZ Projects exclusive UK agent, JJ Smith, believes this range of machines finally gives UK furniture manufacturers a viable option to manual bandsawing, by not only de-skilling the operation but also making it more productive and safer as the operator is no longer making the cuts! Corian makes an impact in stunning new schemes As businesses become more aware of how the aesthetics of their real estate can reflect their brand values, Gary Baker, Managing Director, CDUK, the UK distributor of Corian, is seeing increasing demand for the product on high-value, high-impact schemes.
The original solid surface material and available in more than 90 colours, Corian is a blend of minerals and acrylic that can be shaped to meet the requirements of almost any design. The qualities of Corian make it the perfect solution for many applications as its beauty, strength and versatility mean that it can be applied to almost any scheme in any sector. Designers can create unique showpieces that are dependably durable, waterproof and stain-resistant over large or small surface areas. The range of colours – when combined with lighting solutions – adds to the limitless design options. Two recent projects have seen designers use Corian to stunning effect in both domestic and commercial settings. Edward Williams Furniture and Sam Kopsch Studio with Peldon Rose Workplace Consultants used Corian to make a bespoke boat shaped reception desk for a serviced office building in London. Easy to work with, Corian enabled the design team to mould the reception desk to the shape they wanted, creating a contemporary focal point whose sleek nautical lines reference the building’s location overlooking the Thames. The distinctive 10 x 3m desk used 30 sheets of Glacier White Corian, thermo-formed by the Edward Williams team to create a seamless finish using their in house thermo-former. Working drawings for the desk were created by the company’s CAD team from the initial nautical design concept. In Kent, Astounding Interiors and GNS Solid

Surfaces fabricated and installed Corian in a unique scheme for a residential client. This discerning client’s vision was for a kitchen without corners, in a design that would be original and distinctive, luxurious for entertaining and family dining. Practicality was not to be sacrificed and all the time-saving gadgets of a modern kitchen were incorporated, including two Corian Avante sinks in Designer White Corian with stainless-steel bases, insinkerator and instant boiling water tap. The Corian Designer White bespoke worktop in a figure of eight design, with kidney-shaped cutout for the hob was fabricated by the
experienced team at GNS and teamed with Hanak Elite seven coat white high-gloss kitchen units. Wider than standard sheets, the worktops had to be factory joined and thermoformed to achieve the curves and seamless flow of the design concept. Full support and technical advice from the CDUK team in how to form seamless, unique Corian shapes is available to all designers and fabricators at CDUK’s head office. Training courses in all aspects of Corian fabrication are also available. 0113 201 2240 cdukltd.co.uk

A path to a sustainable future Biomass is fast becoming a preferred option for the fulfilment of heating and hot water needs for many diverse business sectors, with particular attraction to any wood based business. The advantages of adopting biomass are compelling. Self-generated biomass fuel will remove the existing cost of the fossil fuel alternatives – gas, oil or electricity – creating substantial savings year on year. Further savings on the cost of gate fees and manpower for the removal of wood waste, often to landfill, can also be achieved. Eco-credentials are maximised with the legitimate claim of almost carbon neutrality for heat and hot water, a useful contribution to corporate social responsibilities. However, perhaps the most persuasive argument for converting to biomass is the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). Paid by the Government, the RHI provides a valuable income stream, index-linked for 20 years, paid on the metered kWh of heat generated by the biomass boiler. How long this incentive will be available for new applicants is unknown, so the sensible option is to strike while the iron is hot. – delay could be an expensive mistake. AFS Biomass is a leader in the promotion and implementation of biomass heating systems. Working in partnership with ETA, the Austrian manufacturer of the very respected and reliable systems, AFS can offer the design, installation and maintenance of bespoke biomass heating systems. As one of the few Carbon Trust Accredited Suppliers in the UK, AFS Biomass has successfully installed systems nationwide from 50 kW to 1Mw, covering many sectors including furniture manufacturers, sawmills, pallet companies, farms and much more. References are available on request from a large number of highly satisfied clients. P & A Fencing & Sheds in Mold, Wales, a large company producing fencing, sheds, pallets and garden furniture, wanted to replace an LPG-fired boiler heating a wood drying and heat treatment kiln, an oil-fired system heating an office block and portable electric and LPG heaters in the warehouse and workshop. This was achieved with two 200kW ETA Hack boilers. These were so successful that a second
new warehouse with office was added with a third 200 kW boiler. The decision was then taken to expand an existing garden centre into two large underused sheds. These were heated with another 200kW boiler delivering heat through overhead multi-directional fan coil radiators, the same as in the warehouses. An on-site hogger is used to prepare wood chip from all the manufacturing off-cuts creating huge savings against the

previous fossil fuel costs. The approximate return on investment figures show: biomass system, 4 x 200 kW boilers; fuel type, wood chip; fuel savings of £48,500 pa; RHI revenue of £63,000 pa; the system cost £373,000; the payback just 3.4 years; CO2 savings of 895 tonnes pa (substantially reducing carbon taxes). 0844 579 1002 afsbiomass.com

Machinery by fabricators, for fabricators Goldcrest of London is a bespoke joinery and fit-out specialist that offers a range of high-quality Polish machinery under a separate brand, Machines by Goldcrest. The company boasts a high degree of confidence in its machinery – indeed, it utilises it every day as a joiner and acrylic/metalwork fabricator … “I like to describe our machinery range as being ‘by fabricators for fabricators,’” says founder and MD Karol Slowikowski. “We use these machines on a daily basis in our production processes – they’re not just sitting in our showroom.” Machines by Goldcrest supplies workshops and factories with a wide range of durable machinery including vacuum presses for veneering and panel bending works, thermoforming presses for acrylic surfaces such as Corian, Hi-Macs and Betacryl, CNC nesting centres, laminating presses and downdraught sanding tables. Karol says that the company introduces a new machine every few months, offering fabricators new solutions that are both up to date and competitively priced. The machinery is made to order, and is usually available for delivery in three to four weeks. “In the process of manufacturing our orders, we’re constantly finding new ways to improve our already-strong products,” says Karol. “For example, moving the pumps to the sides so there is additional storage underneath the tables, hiding projecting controls so they are not damaged by joiners, or changing factorey settings so CNC centres are quicker to set up and easier to operate.” “Additionally, we don’t have to wait for the long design process delays that some of the bigger brands inflict.” Goldcrest’s approach to sales is similarly straightforward, says Karol. “A number of times, I’ve been quoted for machinery, and attempts have been made to upsell to me based on extra features,” he says, “when I really didn’t need around 50% of the options.

“That’s why we like to offer the best machine without any surcharges to cover the supplier’s brand or showroom overheads. We’ll deliver the machine to the workshop quickly, and set it up so clearly that even an apprentice will be able to operate it after just a couple of hours’ training.” Karol says that Goldcrest’s Polish-made machinery is sturdy enough to survive in even the roughest of workshop environments, and around 30% cheaper than competitors’ products. “In my opinion, there’s no-one better than us to advise buyers on new machinery,” he concludes. “We know it all by heart – what can and can’t be done, and which setup is best for any given production process. As a joinery manufacturer, we wouldn’t sell anything we’re not comfortable with using ourselves.” T 0208 003 3299 E info@machinesbygoldcrest.co.uk W machinesbygoldcrest.co.uk

Masterwood – the panel market For many years Masterwood SpA has been recognised around the world as one of the leading suppliers of CNC machinery for the solid timber industry. An area of Masterwood production that has not always been so widely recognised has been dedicated machines for the panel market, started over 30 years ago by the two families of Zangheri and Boschetti, pioneers of developing drilling machines. Originally a full range of vertical and horizontal drilling machines was developed and soon had a great reputation for longlasting accuracy, this progressed through various NC and PC controlled machines such as the Speedy 207 – now discontinued, but still very popular with the many owners still using them. Today a full range of dedicated nesting CNC machines are produced in Italy by Masterwood, all using the trusted drilling heads built at their Rimini factory. These flat bed machines range in bed sizes from 2500 x 1250mm up to 7000 x 2100mm, although special longer versions have already been supplied. The nesting machines can be supplied as three, four or five axis versions.

Other options include larger drilling heads, loading and unloading tables, automated labelling of panels, fully automated production lines, along with dedicated software for cabinets, furniture, decorative panels, and nesting. Special applications have also been supplied with block drills where large quantities of holes are drilled at the same time, usually for acoustic panels. Added to this range of machines is the Project TF CNC drilling machine, a compact machine that can be used by the small workshop, or in several cases, in larger companies for ‘specials’. The TF machines are very quick to use with changes in panel sizes dealt with in seconds, allowing panels up to 1000mm in width, and 60mm in thickness to be fully machined. There is no restriction on the maximum panel length.
Nesting panels The CNC drilling machines start with the low cost TF80, then moves up to the TF100 which can have the added options of a router and a tool changer, plus the ability to be included in a fully automated system with loading and unloading equipment. A dowel inserter option for the TF100 is also on the way. Both the TF machines run exactly the same software programmes as all the main Masterwood CNC machines, making them fully compatible with each other now, and in the future. Dedicated software from Masterwood such as MasterNest, MasterCabinet, and Master 3D give a vast range of design ability with these quick and easy to use packages. 01293 402700 masterwood.com

Palamatic – a leading supplier of vacuum tube lifting systems Since introducing vacuum tube lifting technology to the UK in 1985, Palamatic Ltd has supplied thousands of lifting solutions to most industries worldwide. Palamatic is an established and leading force in the global market for vacuum handling systems with 50% of systems going in to the Woodworking sector. With a new 20,000ft2 factory based in Chesterfield, Palamatic is expanding to cater for the demands of this growing industry. The Palamatic vacuum lifter range can lift loads from 10kg (22lb) up to 350kg (772lb) and can be customised to suit all applications. Vacuum tube lifters effectively neutralise the weight of the object load for the operator, resulting in a significant reduction in the risk of personal injury associated with poor manual handling techniques. The use of a vacuum lifter also reduces the risk of damage to the product. Palamatic has provided many solutions to manual handling problems within the woodworking industry. The Palamatic vacuum tube lifting systems are safe, durable and effective tools to take the weight up to 350kg and stress out of manual handling tasks. Vacuum lifters can be used as a lift assist for workers performing repetitive tasks such as re-stacking and machine loading. These manual handling tasks can include board lifting, 180° board turning and 90° manual panel turning – ideal for vertical panel saw loading. Common panel handling problems relate to the awkward nature of the payload – particularly so for CNC, router, edgebander and beam saw loading operations. Palamatic’s board, panel, door and furniture lifting systems take the strain away from the operator, replace it with a user-friendly vacuum-powered lift assister and protect a product from accidental damage helping businesses to meet health and safety regulations as well as production demands. With a Palamatic vacuum tube lifter, the operator does not suffer
fatigue at the same rate as during a manual handling process and will allow the operator to maintain performance for during the whole shift. Palamatic’s philosophy has always been to push the boundaries of technology – this is how the company learns and how it grows. The manufacture and design of vacuum handling equipment is only the beginning of Palamatic’s full circle service. The expert installation and commissioning team can ensure that equipment is installed to suit the environment and the budget. Its after-sales team is always on hand to assist with parts, servicing, annual certification requirements or

The University of Northampton is the latest in a growing roster of educational establishments to benefit from the introduction of a Striebig vertical panel saw.
Striebig demonstrates the art of sawing Its wood shop within the School of The Arts recently installed a Striebig entry-level Compact 4164 and staff are delighted with the numerous improvements it’s delivering. Richard Hawkes, the technical demonstrator for Woods, spends a lot of his time sizing sheet material into components wanted by students for their creations. This covers a variety of wood-based panels – mainly plywood, MDF and chipboard – as well as acrylics and the occasional sheet of Perspex. “We used a small table saw for panel cutting before but it was not the easiest way to do things,” he says. “The panels, measuring 8ft x 4ft or 10ft x 5ft, needed a great deal of manhandling to push them through the saw blade. Now it’s a simple job to place a panel onto the Striebig, which avoids a great deal of bending and back twisting.” As well as the important health and safety benefits of reduced manual handling, Richard Hawkes says the other main advantages of the Compact over the table saw were its accuracy and ease of use. “The accuracy is brilliant,” he says. “The Striebig gives us a much cleaner and smoother cut every time, which shows in the students’ finished work when compared with components cut on the table saw. “It’s also extremely quick to set up and easy and safe to operate, so I really can’t fault it. The day it was commissioned I had a lesson from the machine’s installer and was

I had a big smile on my face that day.” With a cutting range of 3100 x 1644mm (10ft x 5ft) and a maximum depth of cut of 60mm, the Compact 4164 guarantees impressive dust limit values of well below 1mg/m3. Richard Hawkes says the strip cutter supplied as an option with the saw was ideal for making fast and accurate repeat cuts when small pieces needed to be sized. As an example of the time saving being achieved, he recently had to cut 88 8ft x 4ft sheets of MDF

into 8ft long narrow lengths for a student’s installation. “We stacked the sheets five at a time on the Striebig,” he says. “I reckon that doing the job on the table saw would have taken about five times as long. With sawing speeded up like this, I can now spend far more time with students to talk about their requirements.” Due to its versatility the saw is also in demand to size sheet materials for students taking Architecture and Product Design courses. The decision to buy the
Compact was made by Dr Richard Hollinshead, senior lecturer, Sculpture and Spatial Practice, who has had extensive experience of using a Striebig at other educational establishments. “I knew how good they are and was perfectly happy to specify one for our wood shop,” he says. Models in the nine-strong Compact series offer a cutting range from 3100 x 1644 x 80mm to 5350 x 2200mm. There’s even an automated cut cycle version, the Compact AV, which makes them even more productive. All Compact machines are based on a single, fully welded sawing frame to give decades of reliable service whilst maintaining cutting precision. They can be wall-mounted or freestanding and can cut practically all wood-based sheet materials as well as timber, plasterboard, plastics, composites and aluminium panels. The purchase was part of an investment programme in new equipment prior to the School of The Arts moving into the university’s new £330m Waterside Campus, which is due to open in 2018. Striebig saws are available from sole UK sales agent, TM Machinery Sales. The company will be exhibiting on stand B610 at the W16 Joinery and Furniture Manufacturing show at the National Exhibition Centre in October. 0116 271 7155 tmmachinery.co.uk

Nesting is a very efficient method of processing components out of large, raw boards. Rather than using two machines, a beam saw and a CNC, the nesting CNC allows the operations to be done on the one machine. It is particularly useful for the efficient production of shaped parts that require cutting, drilling, grooving or routing.
Nesting – the art of converting raw boards into sized and drilled components “Not only does a nesting machine maximise the usage of the board by nesting components as close together as possible, but it also drills, grooves and routs them without having to move the parts to another machine,” explains Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director at Homag UK. He continues: “Homag nesting software ensures that throughout the entire run the job is processed at maximum efficiency. It allows the operator to choose the best way to optimise the programs for either speed or yield.” Weeke Vantage 100 and 200 gantry CNC nesting machines The Weeke Vantage 100 and 200 are gantry style nesting machines which provide the highest precision over the total working width. Both models come with a powerful 12hp (9kW) HSK routing spindle as standard and there is an option to upgrade to a 16hp (12kW) unit. The Vantage 100 offers a pick-up tool-changing system from 7 to 12 places dependent on the working field size. The larger Vantage 200 offers a 14-fold tool-changing system as standard. The 100 and 200 come with the highly flexible matrix pro table which has different vacuum cups
Weeke nesting CNC machines – maximising usage of raw boards
available for secure and accurate clamping in the event that individual parts need to be machined. The optional aluminium grid table allows the positive locking of clamping elements providing reliable fixture of the work pieces even under exposure to high hogging forces. The table design optimises the distribution of the vacuum and reduces leaks and transmission losses. The narrow grid table combined with the clamping system allows for tremendous flexibility. Even unusual shapes can be processed due to the rotatable vacuum cups and with the diverse types of vacuum blocks available it is also possible to carry out simple and quick horizontal processing on grid tables. From standalone machines to automated inline processing For the smaller manufacturer, the Vantage 100 or 200 can be used as a standalone cell. Then, as required, it can have units added to it such as the lift tables and feeding conveyors to increase productivity. Alternatively, it can be fed by an automated storage system which delivers the required raw boards straight from stock as required. The machine is programmed using one of the most established CNC systems available, woodWOP, which has more than 30,000 installations worldwide. This simple-to-use Windows-based software features a large graphics area with a threedimensional view of the workpiece. Optional software

packages include woodNest Basic for manual nesting of shaped parts, woodAssembler which enables the construction of individual workpieces to finished objects, woodVisio, woodWOP DXF Basic and 3D CNC Simulator. Homag BMG 300/500/600 The Homag BMG range of gantry processing centres provides state-of-the-art CNC solutions for furniture, window, door and stair manufacturers. With an aluminium matrix table, the BMG 311/R and 511/R are the ideal specification machines for processing technical components, shaped parts and nesting. The Magicut optimisation nesting software automatically works out the best layout for all the workpieces on a raw panel which maximises the cost savings by creating minimum wastage. In addition, individually adjustable optimisation parameters help reduce the overall process time and maximise reliability. Control by powerTouch The Homag Group’s recently introduced powerTouch operating philosophy combines design and

function to create an innovative and efficient control system. It can be used with over 300 Homag machines, making life simple for machine operators who no longer have to learn different control packages for each machine. The full HD multi-touch monitor with ergonomic touch operation, simple navigation and a standardised user interface is the heart of the new system. It is clear and intuitive allowing machine users to quickly get to grips with the full potential of each machine. “The BMG range of CNC processing centres is quite amazing,” concludes Simon Brooks, “All the models in the range enable a multitude of tasks to be carried out on one machine and therefore deliver significant productivity gains and cost savings for customers. “In addition, there are a number of options which can be added to automate the production process further, such as a robot to load raw panels and off load processed parts. “Whichever nesting solution you decide is right for your business, our Homag Finance team can help you put in place the necessary funding to ease your cash flow and get you operational. So there really is no need to delay installing the latest equipment to drive your business to the next level.” For more information on the latest nesting solutions from Homag and Weeke, call Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. 01332 856500 homag-uk.co.uk

Wood waste heater “worth its weight in gold” A Derbyshire joinery company is saying goodbye to unnecessary heating and waste disposal bills after buying a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology. Gable Joinery was established in 2009 and works with clients including high-end retail outlets, professional services firms and industrial companies from its premises in Chesterfield. As a joinery manufacturer, the business was spending around £180 a week on skips to remove its wood offcuts and other waste, whilst its 8500ft2 joinery workshop was freezing cold in winter as it had no form of heating. The directors decided to look into the possible benefits of purchasing a wood waste heater, to reduce waste disposal costs and provide heating for its eight employees. A quick search on the internet led them to Wood Waste Technology, and a realisation that a wood waste heater could be the ideal solution. Following more information and a site survey, Wood Waste Technology’s specialist engineers installed a WT10 wood waste heater into the factory in February this year. Director, Heather Smith says: “We’re delighted to have discovered Wood Waste Technology, and once we understood the benefits of wood waste heaters, our next question was “How quickly can you install one here?” A few weeks later, the team came to install it one morning, and by lunchtime it was in and working – and we could feel the difference straight away. The guys in the joinery workshop
FP273_pages.14.indd 63
started removing layers of clothing, as in just a few hours the room had gone from freezing cold to beautifully warm!” Heather continues: “We now have perfect heat conditions all around the factory and are saving a fortune on waste removal, as we’re only having to hire a new skip every couple of months, rather than every week! We’re delighted with the service received from Wood Waste Technology. Our wood waste heater is worth its weight in gold.” MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft says: “We’ve been delighted to help Gable Joinery, and, with the money savings on waste disposal, the company will soon get payback on its investment.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand-fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems – a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs.

The Chesterfield Company – a British manufacturing process
The Chesterfield Company prides itself on being one of only a handful of manufacturers to produce all of its frames and sofas from start to finish on site, using techniques, some of which have been passed down through generations of traditional upholstery makers. Created using only UK-sourced material, sustainable timber and only the top 5% of best quality UK leather hides, ensure the finishing materials compliment the quality of the build. The manufacturing process at its Manchester site, consists of choosing a style of sofa, then the leather, the stitch preference, the frame and, of course, the compliance. A traditional Chesterfield sofa requires a buttoning technique known as deep buttoning and can be considered advanced upholstery for even skilled upholsterers. This skill is primarily a trait that has been mastered by many Northern furniture
FP273_pages.14.indd 66
manufacturers partly due to the north of England being the primary location and home of the industrial revolution and historically a centre for the UK textiles movement of generations past. Whilst grand in nature, the Chesterfield sofa is a pinnacle skill to master for all upholsterers, a simple ‘boxy’ or compact sofa being a better starting point for beginners. The leather The quality of leather will impact the way the sofa is cut, sewn and upholstered. The difference in production affects the amount of material needed, and this can be dramatically increased or reduced with experience. Cutting yields on leather can affect the cost of production by up to 25%. An experienced leather cutter must work around natural hide variations, scars and marks, whilst minimising waste from the irregular shapes of the hides – the only way to create real leather sofas.

A stitch preference Not only are there differences in how the material is cut, but also the way it is sewn, leather is often twinned or double stitched requiring a unique sewing machine known as a twinner (twin needle). The frame The one common factor in the manufacture of any type of sofa is the frame of the sofa, and the heart of a good piece of furniture. There are not many English sofa companies with the luxury of a frame-making facility on site. The Chesterfield Company’s frames are made from beech hardwood which is used for all main supporting rails, and birch ply wood for non-load bearing areas. This type of frame construction is excellent but far from common in sofa manufacture, with many companies choosing to use chipwood and/or MDF due to cost Again this is not typical, elastic considerations. webbing is a cheaper alternative A good frame is both screwed that is often used by Chineseand glued for added strength, with manufactured sofas or imported corner blocks used to reinforce sofas. all load bearing areas. In addition The Chesterfield Company to dowelling, this is another good also uses a sprung edge sofa, technique that we use in the frame or Fishmouth Sprung as it is manufacturing process. A metal sometimes known, which is only zig-zag spring is then used to used by some of the UK’s top sofa connect front and back seat rails. manufacturers. The Fishmouth spring is named because of its unfortunate resemblance to its namesake. Not only is the base of the seat sprung, but the front edge of the sofa, which is normally firm, is sprung, making for an extremely comfortable sitting experience, which opens and closes like the mouth of a fish!
The compliance Compliance with UK regulations is extremely important. Some serious consequences have occurred in recent years when retailers and overseas manufacturers neglect their basic responsibilities to public welfare and health. thechesterfieldcompany.com
Finishing fast with Speed and Quantum from AkzoNobel Delivering a speedy project completion together with ensuring that quality is at the forefront of what you do in any market isn’t that easy. When an opportunity came along for Marineware who are an AkzoNobel Distributor, to run some product evaluations with one of the leading interiors companies in the UK the chance was too good to miss. It would be an opportunity for AzkoNobel’s Speed and Quantum to really shine. In the initial trials, the company used Quantum IS160 – a 2K PU Acrylic Isolating Sealer, together with evaluating Quantum Q-T260-30 – a 2K PU Acrylic Clear Semi-Gloss Topcoat. The evaluation also tested Quantum Color QC-IP350 Isolating Primer, Speed SP-S191 Clear Sealer and Speed SP-T290-90 High-Gloss Topcoat. During the tests the coatings were applied on various selections of wood and on all samples the products gave a super-fast build with excellent clarity. The gloss levels proved to be simply outstanding.

process. The combined upwards and downwards spiral geometry of the tool ensures a clean edge finish on both the top and bottom surfaces of the material, an attribute that is of special significance if chipping of double-sided laminates is to be avoided or when processing natural woods where edge-finishing could present a problem if alternative standard spiral tools are used. The Marathon Compression Tool further extends the range of routing/cutting, spare parts and accessories solutions provided by the CNCRoutershop facility. They include high-quality router bits, collets and cones, all of which are compatible with various spindle types, oscillating and tangential knife blades and/or special-purpose tooling. Students play a supporting role in Shakespeare’s New Place upgrade Royal Leamington Spa College furniture crafts students played a supporting role in the spectacular transformation of Shakespeare’s New Place, Stratford-upon-Avon, as they helped deliver an impressive oak bench which will be a central feature of the dramatic new garden on the site of Shakespeare’s house. The circular oak bench – which is over 25m long – was commissioned by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust from craftsman Armando Magnino, who is also a lecturer at the college. Student Philipp Stummer has worked with Armando on the bench has taken six months to complete. The bench which envelopes the area representing the heart of the Shakespeares’ family home, providing the perfect spot to contemplate the pivotal sculpture, His Mind’s Eye a monumental bronze tree representing the power of Shakespeare’s imagination. Thirteen students transported the bench onto a long loader so it could make the journey from Armando’s workshop in Warwick to Shakespeare’s New Place in Stratford-upon-Avon. As the bench was so large, it was made in six smaller pieces ranging from
6-9m. They then transferred the bench into the contemporary new garden, where Philipp and Armando secured the seating in place. Speaking after the bench has been delivered safely, Armando says, “We couldn’t have done it without the students so a big thank you to them today. It’s been a long journey as we have been working on the bench since November but it is wonderful to see it finally in the space it was designed for. “The project has been an incredible experience for myself, and for Philipp and our colleague Simon Ferguson who has been assisting with the project too. I have done a lot of intricate craftsmanship but nothing on this scale – it brings a whole new level of complexity that has many challenges. “It’s an honour to have my work in a world famous heritage landmark and hope that the visitors make good use of it to take in the view of the beautiful new garden.” Philipp, who is just about to complete his Level 3 Furniture Crafts at Royal Leamington Spa College says: “It’s amazing to see the bench finally in place. We have done everything in partnership and I have learned so much from Armando on the project.”
Julie Crawshaw, project manager, Shakespeare’s New Place says: “We have brought together an outstanding community of artists, craftspeople and designers to create a contemporary gateway to Shakespeare on this internationally significant site. The seating which Armando and his team have created is an artwork in its own right, truly beautiful to the touch and the eye, creating an oasis to sit and contemplate Shakespeare’s enduring influence in our world.” Visitors to Shakespeare’s New Place, which opens on Friday 1st July, will walk in Shakespeare’s footsteps through a new threshold on the site of his gatehouse and trace the footprint of his family home in a contemporary setting.
Commissioned artworks and displays throughout the site, as well as a newly curated exhibition about his life in Stratford, will evoke aspects of Shakespeare’s family life and commemorate the plays and sonnets written during his 19year ownership of New Place. The project is being funded with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic England and through public donations. The link between Warwickshire College Group and Shakespeare’s New Place doesn’t stop with the furniture students as Pershore College’s Avonbank Nursery has also supplied some of the plants for the garden, including pot marigold and cosmos. shakespeare.org.uk
Makita power tools support Team Bath Racing Electric for Formula Student Team Bath Racing Electric recently took the wraps off its entry for this year’s Formula Student contest which takes place at Silverstone 14th July and will see up to 150 teams from universities across Europe test their own design and build race car for reliability and performance. The Bath University Electric Team was newly formed just six months ago and has fast-tracked its initial car build completing the project
FP273_pages.14.indd 74
that regularly takes new teams 18 months to achieve. Thanks to the provision of an existing rolling chassis from the established Internal Combustion engine team at Bath, the newly assembled Electric Team has succeeded in their ambition to get the car to the start line for this year’s event. “Thanks to the support of our industrial sponsors, the hard work of every member of the team and the encouragement of our head of department, we have actually
achieved a small miracle in getting this chassis mobile in six months,” says Alex Keane, team leader. “We have kept to a simple design plan all the way through. It has been a challenge to understand the rules and regulations of Formula Student and to build the motor, control systems and power pack into the car but we have run it across the car park and hope to be the first Electric Team for several years to get through scrutineering where the inspectors check that we comply and that the car is safe to race.” Team Bath Racing Electric has received support from many specialists in the EV industry and related support suppliers. Makita provided a comprehensive inventory of lithium-Ion powered cordless tools to help the car build program. “We have received great support from many high tech companies,” reports Guy Barkley, leader of the business sector in the team. “Without this level of practical support in terms of materials, components and products such as these excellent Makita tools, we would not have achieved this outstanding target. Now Team Bath Racing Electric is in good shape for
the future and the new members coming into the team for the next season can advance the designand-build program to hopefully have a winning car for 2017.” The plans for the second generation car are to move to a twin motor power system with electronic differential, lithium-ion battery pack and new chassis. Head of the Electrical Engineering faculty at Bath University, Dr Adrian Evans, is full of praise for the achievements of Team Bath Electric. “This was a new team formed here with high ambitions and seemingly not enough time to be ready for Silverstone but by sheer hard work, good program management and great support from all sides they have reached the start line. “The group will expand for the second season with more people working on an even more ambitious design so we are proud of Team Bath Electrical Engineering students and wish them well for the future.” To keep up to date with the latest news, follow Team Bath Racing Electric on Twitter @ TeamBathRacingE makitauk.com
