I am writing at the end of the Monday of the W16-Elements trade show at the NEC in Birmingham, where almost all exhibitors with whom I have spoken seem to be in good spirits following a busy and productive first two days. One of the highlights of the show thus far has been the culmination of the Elements of Innovation Awards, created by the event’s organiser, Montgomery. The inaugural competition garnered 39 finalists across various areas – machinery, equipment, fittings and components. From a competitive roster of entrants, the winners were: of the machinery and equipment submissions, Felder with its Silent Power Cutter Block; and on the fittings and components side, Casetur’s impressive CM4070 space-saving mechanism won the day. Congratulations of course go to the winners and highly commended entries, but also to all the entrants who took the time and effort to enter the awards, and the organiser whose concept seems to have struck a chord with visitors and exhibitors alike. Other popular features at the show include the W Challenge, in which four apprentices are competing to produce a piece of furniture by the end of the show in order to demonstrate their skills. The initiative is being judged by the training experts Didac, and the competition so far seems to be bringing the best out of the talented apprentices. Elsewhere, the Skills for Excellence zone is providing a plethora of practical advice and knowledge courtesy of the British Woodworking Federation. Both these initiatives have been developed by the organiser to add interest to what is already an excellent event – I know it’s only the end of day two, but I think it’s safe to say that the organiser has succeeded in creating a more engaging event by adding depth, variety and interest to the show. I look forward to being able to report on future developments for this event in coming issues, and I would urge all interested parties, exhibitors and visitors to help further hone the event for 2018 to make it even more engaging and rewarding for all concerned. Aside from the technical innovations and new products being discussed at the show, there is considerable talk about how Brexit is – or is not – affecting the industry. It appears that the overwhelming majority hold the view that although there was an initial breath-holding fortnight or so when people came to terms with the result and its potential ramifications, the effect on business thus far appears to have been negligible.

Not that people and businesses are being complacent – rather that there is resolve to move on, deal with the situation dispassionately and professionally and press on with the agenda of working with partners, associates and colleagues to instil confidence in customers, and, basically, get on with business. We now know the timetable that the Government has set out, and we trust they will negotiate the best possible trade agreements to allow industry and others to continue to develop in a positive and sustainable fashion in the future. I am sure that our international colleagues – in the majority of cases – feel the same. As if to exemplify the underlying confidence in our market, the highly-regarded cabinet fittings firm, Blum, has selected the UK to be the first to benefit from significant investment to enhance its customer interaction at all levels, with a new visitor experience at Blum UK headquarters in Milton Keynes. Of course, the plans have been in place for some time for this next-generation facility, but the fact that the UK is the first resource of its type in the world underlines the belief many businesses have in the UK market, whatever the short-term vagaries. Blum’s world-class facility in Milton Keynes really has to experienced first-hand – for designers, manufacturers, dealers, distributors, installers and retailers, the facility presents the company’s impressive range of products in a manner that has not been seen before. In closing, myself and the team are currently engaged in tweaking and upgrading our class-leading website, and we would like to hear what you, the readership, has to say about our digital platform, which includes the popular editorial newsletters. Otherwise, I hope you enjoy the issue, and as always, please continue to engage with us via social media, email, the telephone, or a good, old-fashioned letter, letting me know your points of view.

Specialist finance firm enables timber frame business to flourish Close Brothers Asset Finance provides asset-based funding solutions to small-to-mediumsized businesses in the woodworking industry, backed by Close Brothers Group plc, a FTSE 250 company. The firm’s team of finance specialists understands the issues faced on a daily basis in the woodworking industry, allowing it to create bespoke funding solutions tailor-made to business needs. MBC Timber Frame UK is just one example of how it has supported a business to access much needed funds. MBC Timber Frame UK was established in 2002 in Cahir, Co Tipperary specialising in the design and construction of super-insulated, high performance, affordable and passive timber frame homes throughout Ireland and the UK. The company has recently set up a UK subsidiary in Gloucester to target the English market and this is where the new asset and new jobs will be located.

MBC has grown significantly over the last 12 months and managing director Joe Blair expects the company to have grown even more throughout 2016 with the acquisition of specific timber frame manufacturing machinery. The business couldn’t raise the required funds to pay the full deposit for the machinery, so Joe Blair met with area sales manager, Liam Ryan at Close Brothers Asset Finance to discuss finance options. Liam knew that the company would be eligible for support for grant assistance from the Regional Growth Fund as five jobs would be created on the back of the new machinery being purchased and installed. He could also see that the purchase of the woodworking equipment would be crucial to the growth and development of the company throughout the UK. Following a successful RGF application and the financial funding in place, Joe could now take the business forward with the plans for the UK subsidiary. With

the new assets in place, MBC will be able to reduce the time taken to manufacture the timber frame houses, therefore resulting in creation of new jobs and in turn generating increased revenue for the company. Joe comments: “The newly acquired timber frame

manufacturing machinery will allow us to ensure the highest standard of manufacturing is achieved for our clients. As a new customer to Close Brothers, we look forward to working with them again in the future.” 01244 457569 closeassset.co.uk/woodworking

PWS’ new water jet

PWS makes record-breaking donation

PWS Worksurfaces has invested £250k in a state-of-the-art water jet machine, enhancing the company’s manufacturing expertise and material palette, and further improving the precision and detail achieved when cutting stone. The investment was driven by the increasing popularity of ultra-compact materials such as Dekton, Neolith and Lapitech, which the company sees as being an important element of its sales mix in 2016 and beyond. Comments Jeremy Redshaw, PWS Worksurfaces’ manufacturing manager: “The new water jet significantly speeds up the manufacturing process, which previously was carried out with a saw and CNC at much slower rates to avoid fracturing. The investment reaps significant benefits for our customers, not only offering enhanced design features, but representing a reduction in lead time from seven to five days.” The Indoline 5Model waterjet is part of the Technocut range by Italian supplier CMS. Blood Sweat & Gears, PWS’ charity project in aid of Help For Heroes, has drawn to a record-breaking close. The original target of £250,000, set by PWS’ CEO Mark Stephenson, had already been exceeded when the 500km cycling challenge concluded in South Africa in May. However, following further donations and events, the tally grew to £314,000, beating the target by £64,000. It is the highest amount this year any singular, third-party fundraising challenge has donated to Help For Heroes. The vision for the project has now been realised as Help For Heroes has confirmed the money will fund three additional psychological wellbeing advisers for three years, helping wounded, injured and sick service personnel, veterans and their families. This is a significant investment, and the importance of this donation is backed not only by research but also by the positive results of work undertaken by the two advisers already working at Phoenix House, the Help For Heroes Northern Recovery Centre.

FP276_Main.indd 4

Mark Stephenson with Melanie Dickinson of Help For Heroes Melanie Dickinson, interim centre manager, says: “It is probably fair to say that invisible injuries from war, conflict and trauma require, perhaps, the most long-term investment. And that is why it is important to have the staff required to provide that support going forward. “We never doubted that Mark, PWS and all their supporters would reach their huge target of £250,000, but for them to surpass it, by so much, is simply outstanding.

It will go a long way to supporting beneficiaries with mental illness, enabling us to help change more lives and, in some cases, save lives.” Mark comments: “I extend my heartfelt and sincere thanks to our suppliers, customers and the truly Great British public who embraced my pie-in-the-sky idea. They were behind us all the way and ensured that Blood Sweat & Gears exceeded all expectations.” W bloodsweatandgears.cc

Holzma celebrates 50 years at the sharp end For 50 years, Holzma has embodied top quality and precision in panel cutting. The success story began with the founding of Holzma in 1966. At that time, it was new technical developments that drove the rapid growth of the company. Today that focus continues, but also encompasses optimally networked technologies and innovations for highly efficient production processes. The motto for the anniversary celebrations, We are Panel Dividing sums up five decades of Holzma. From 1966 to the present day, generations of highly-qualified employees with their ideas and skills have taken Holzma from literally being a garage company to its present position as world market leader in panel-dividing technology. Some 420 people are employed at the company headquarters in Calw-Holzbronn alone. In addition, there are skilled employees at other production sites, including Barcelona, Shanghai, Sao Paulo and Bangalore. Together, they form the Business Unit Panel Dividing

within the Homag Group, to which Holzma has belonged since 1987. The beginnings: full of courage and entrepreneurial spirit The success story started with Erwin Jenkner who, as founding father, shaped Holzma with his exceptional creativeness, great courage and entrepreneurial spirit. When he registered the Holzma name in May 1966, it was already a household name in Germany among window manufacturers, but not yet for saws. In 1967 Erwin Jenkner built the first horizontal saw with a saw unit running under the table. The model served mainly to cut solid wood. It was equipped with a hydraulic drive unit, but still lacked a pressure beam and a scoring saw. The growth: faster than the competition When a growing demand for saws capable of cutting melaminelaminated chipboard became apparent, Erwin Jenkner instigated the construction of the next generation saw. Detlef Jenkner,

Erwin’s son, was responsible for the new development. He was studying mechanical engineering in Constance at the time and, alongside this, took on the design work. He officially joined the company in 1969, increasing the number of employees to six. In 1970 the first panel saw with pressure beam and electronicallycontrolled lateral fence rolled off the production line. From then on, Holzma equipped all saws with a scoring unit that was adjustable horizontally and vertically from the outside. The company was growing at a rapid rate and there was no longer enough space in the garage. To facilitate expansion, it purchased a plot of land in nearby Holzbronn and built the new headquarters there. It completed the building work itself; only on Saturdays, of course, because during the week they were busy selling saws. Just over a year later, the company moved into its new premises at Holzbronn, where eight employees produced panel saws for the world market in an initial

area of 1500m². By comparison, today the facility in Holzbronn boasts a production area of around 30,000m². The internationalisation: leading the field in new territories 1971 was also the year in which Holzma supplied the first machine for cutting strips to England. One year later, the company took its first order for an angular saw unit. The order read quite simply and precisely: Fully automatic angular system, 2500 x 1250mm, as discussed … 476,000.00 DM. The company was now achieving annual growth rates between 10 and 30%. The export ratio rose to 90% and by the mid-1970s Holzma was supplying customers in Australia, North America and the Far East. When, in the late 70s, the use of chipboard and MDF boards increased sharply in North America, Holzma, decided to take the big step across the Atlantic. This led to the founding of Holzma US, Sales and Service, in Gastonia, North Carolina in 1981. The USA became Holzma’s

strongest export market and it was soon supplying more machines to the USA than to the home market. Holzma US was taken over by the well-known trading company Stiles Machinery which itself became a member of the Homag Group in 2015. In the Homag Group: established as world market leader In 1986, Homag Group AG was looking for a specialist horizontal beam saw manufacturer. Holzma seized this opportunity for further growth and, with its 220 employees, joined the Homag Group in 1987. Scarcely three years after joining the Homag Group, Holzma had virtually doubled its workforce and established itself as world market leader for panel saws. Holzma has not only maintained this position, but also continues to expand its global presence. The product portfolio today: solutions from size S to XXL Regardless of whether customers choose an entry-level saw from

“No less than 65 Holzma patents were granted in the last 10 years alone The clear aim behind all these innovations is the focus on improving manufacturing quality and increasing flexibility and efficiency in the production process, while bearing in mind the needs of the customer”

The Holzma HPP 300 – three complete processing steps on one machine the 1 or 2 series, a classic Holzma saw from the 3 or 4 series, or they invest in an industrial-scale model from the 5 or 6 series, they will always benefit from a machine with leading-edge technology and enormous potential for customisation thanks to needsbased optional features. As world market leader in horizontal panel-dividing technology, Holzma thinks far beyond the cutting process. Modern production requires efficient, seamless and ergonomic processes from the store to the saw and on to the finished product. In this age of digitalisation, the key to success is increasingly the software. Holzma recognised this at an early stage and today offers two of the most important software

solutions for cutting panel-shaped wood and plastic materials: its machine-control software CADmatic and the Holzma optimisation software, MagiCut. This package of solutions is complemented by needs-based handling systems and ever-more intelligent networking with upstream and downstream machines. The future: Holzma is constantly shaping the future with new ideas The spirit of inventiveness is the bedrock of Holzma’s business and the key to its success. The many inventions of the company founder and later generations are evidence of this and include: the introduction of clamps on the program fence; and the suspension of the machine supports in the two frame stands and the square panel saw (cutting length = cutting width). The advantage was that this design of the rear machine table, in conjunction with the clamps and a higher program fence speed, made real one-man operation of a beam saw possible. No less than 65 Holzma patents were granted in the last 10 years alone. The clear aim behind all these innovations is the focus on improving manufacturing quality and increasing flexibility and efficiency in the production process, while bearing in mind the needs of the customer. The means of achieving this are automation, networked machines and freely

flowing processes – from the warehouse via the office to the cutting process and on to all other processing stations. An example of this is the new HPS 320 flexTec. With this system, Holzma has revolutionised the cutting process in batch size 1 production. This cutting cell is purpose-designed for processing single panels and completely redefines the parts flow. Key features are fully automated processes and unlimited recuts. In addition to this, the Holzma HPP 300 multiTec has recently opened up undreamt-of possibilities. This new development allows customers to complete three processing steps on one machine: sawing, drilling and routing. Readyto-assemble elements can be produced, for example for facade and partition wall construction, or for the manufacture of concrete formwork. The team: We are panel dividing Holzma invests a great deal in training particularly for young apprentices who will grow and mature to be the future of the business. This will help the company to secure today the much needed skilled workers of tomorrow, thus paving the way for the future. Holzma is ready for the challenges of tomorrow and will continue to dominate the beam saw market for the foreseeable future. 01332 856500 homag-uk.co.uk

Ostermann busy constructing new logistics complex in Bocholt

Dagmar Daxenberger, MD of Ostermann in Bocholt, explains the planned construction of the new logistics complex in Germany

Expansion work is again ongoing at the German edgings specialist, Ostermann. A new logistics centre with 5000m2 of floor space is scheduled to open in Bocholt in the summer of 2017. The new complex comprises a 2400m2 warehouse facility, as well as a new two-storey dispatch centre with about 2500m2 of floor space. The construction project represents an investment of more than €10m. More space for more growth The permanently growing range of furniture edgings, and the continuous development of new markets mean that the current logistical processes – based on an exclusively manual picking operation – are at the limits of their capacity. “During our peak-time between 3-4pm, up to 15 forklifts are all operating at the same time in the picking operation alone,” says Dagmar Daxenberger, head of the Ostermann Group.“ “As you can imagine, it can appear something like a beehive at these times. This is why we decided that our new building would be based on a new, cutting-edge logistics concept – ‘goods-toperson’. This means that a fully automated process delivers goods to the employees, who then prepare them for delivery.”

FP276_Main.indd 8

A new warehouse and logistics complex is scheduled to open in the summer of 2017, behind the high-bay warehouse constructed in 2012 (large building, far left) Because Ostermann sells furniture edgings from lengths starting at just 1m, the rest of the opened edging rolls are put back into storage via a fully automatic process.

approximately 5000m2 of usable area is used for commercial as well as industrial purposes. New loading doors will also ensure that the goods-in and goods-out processes run smoothly.

Numbers of storage bays doubled An area of 2400m2 will be home to a 14m-high furniture edgings warehouse facility. This means that Ostermann is doubling the number of storage bays in Bocholt. The outgoing goods are then processed and packed in the new dispatch centre. So the

Furniture edgings for the whole of Europe Whereas Ostermann’s subsidiary sites in England, Italy and France each have their own on-site warehouse facilities, the other markets in Europe are supplied from Germany. “Only very recently, we upgraded our new Ostermann Online Shop

with additional languages for our markets in the Czech Republic, Poland, Sweden, Denmark and Slovakia. “We anticipate that this will result in continuously increasing numbers of net sales” says Dagmar. “The construction of this new logistics centre means that Ostermann is superbly prepared to meet the challenges that the coming years will bring.” The MD cautions: “But then, I did say just that, when our high-bay warehouse was opened in 2012. And now, we are already busy building again.” ostermann.eu

Blum’s Milton Keynes headquarters

Experience Blum Leading UK fittings supplier to the KBB sector, Blum, has launched a new immersive facility at its UK offices and warehouse in Milton Keynes – an Experience Centre, comprising 11,500ft2 of interactive experience … David Sanders, Blum UK sales and marketing director, calls the new facility “a place where ideas and relationships are brought to life – it’s a state-of-the-art facility, where our partners can experience not only Blum’s products but also its services, its people, its heritage and culture”. Designed by Think Architecture & Design, the centre opens with a welcome pod, a reception area that transports visitors into the world of Blum. The company is steeped in heritage. Blum is still a familyowned business, founded by Julius Blum in 1952. Blacksmiths by trade, they started selling their first hinge in 1958, and this was the start of Blum’s foray into the furniture industry. In the new

Experience Centre, visitors will be transported back to the original foundry, with sights, sounds and even scents evoking the era. The Experience Centre is based around the principles of yesterday, today and tomorrow, and is testament to the investment that the company is making within the industry. “We make a huge commitment every year to invest in the infrastructure of our business,” says David. “We have 28 subsidiaries globally, export to over 120 countries and have four production plants. We invest not only in buildings but also in our people. We are extremely proud of our apprenticeship programme in Austria and the US, and have 306 apprentices training this year.” Demonstrating Blum’s passion for research and development, the centre also includes a virtual reality experience, with a 3D movie of the manufacturing process, a fully kitted-out apartment that features Blum’s extra-wide and deep drawers that can hold up to 70kg

AXYZ trade-in initiative gathers momentum Owners of Pacer routers, supplied by AXYZ International, that have passed their useful working life and need to be replaced with a more upto-date and possibly higher performance machine can benefit from a significant cash discount when purchasing a new AXYZ or Pacer router. A recent example is Gateshead, Tyne and Wear-based Escott Signs, which has now upgraded to a largeformat AXYZ 6014 router by trading in an old Pacer router facilitated by the cash discount offered by AXYZ International. In addition to traditional signmaking materials like acrylic, plastics and aluminium, Escott Signs will use the new router to process different timber materials – in particular exterior-grade plywood and MDF. These are used in the manufacture of exterior signage to be installed within areas of natural beauty as well as for country parks and boundary signs located in rural areas due to the environmental appeal of timber and its preferred use by local authorities for rural

The 6014 router is supported by ArtCAM design and production software that was also supplied by AXYZ International. The 6000 series of large-format routers provides processing widths of up to 2159mm and lengths from 3048mm up to 10m. In common with all AXYZ routers, the 6014 model can be supplied with a raft of optional production tool enhancements. These include the AXYZ Auto Zone Management facility that ensures the material being processed is always held securely throughout the routing/ cutting cycle and the latest A2MC machine control system. A further optional enhancement is the latest AXYZ helical rack and pinion drive system incorporating a multiple gear teeth configuration. This helps spread the workload more evenly, leading to greater routing/cutting accuracy, faster

throughput speeds, reduced material wastage and ultimately a longer than normal machine life. On the performance of the new AXYZ 6014 router since installation, sales director at Escott Signs, Jeff Lumsden, comments: “While it is too early to make a full evaluation of the router’s impact on our business,

it is fair to say that, based on its performance so far, we predict a significant increase in production as well as making the company even more competitive when tendering for long-term contracts with our many blue chip customers.” 01952 291600 axyz.com

16 NEWS

www.furnitureproduction.net

Homag UK develops unique partnership with Braepac to tackle packaging challenges and waste costs For furniture – and indeed many other – manufacturers, packaging can be a major headache. The size range and volume of pre-fabricated or flat-packed boxes that have to be held in stock to pack a manufacturer’s products ready for delivery often demand a considerable amount of space. In addition, there tends to be high wastage of cardboard, as often boxes that are too big for the products have to be used with filler materials to provide secure packaging. “On-demand box-making machines are not new,” explains Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director for Homag UK. He continues: “With the Germans’ usual insight, however, they recognised that the solutions available were not sufficiently flexible or technically advanced enough and so they decided to design and produce their own. “The resulting machine, the Homag VKS 250 powerTouch, has caused quite a stir in the packaging market and it is something we want to take advantage of here in the UK. “At Homag UK, our knowledge and experience are very much rooted in the woodworking and furniture manufacturing markets. Consequently, we felt it was important to find a company we could partner with who had the in-depth familiarity and detailed knowledge of the single and double wall corrugated packaging market. Synchronicity strikes “One of our team, Jon Lawman, made contact with Braepac, a company that has established itself within the corrugated market. To our surprise, they were in the process of evaluating box-making machine manufacturers with the aim of partnering with one to provide more of a one-stop-shop for its customers.” James Hilson, a director of Braepac takes up the story: “We had already carried out considerable research into the market when Jon Lawman from Homag UK contacted us. “As Homag operates in a completely different market, however, we weren’t aware of its new cardboard-box cutting machine, the VKS 250. “Jon’s approach couldn’t have been more timely. None of the established box-making machine companies offered anything as

FP276_Main.indd 16

technically advanced, versatile and easy to use as Homag’s VKS 250. After initial talks with Homag UK, they invited us out to Germany to view the Homag Automation facility and to visit one of its customers to see the machine in a working environment. Production machine for small run and specialist packaging “Once we’d experienced the set up in Germany and totally understood the capabilities of the VKS 250, we were convinced that Homag was the company to partner with. “Consequently, we decided to buy a VKS 250 for ourselves. This would serve two purposes: firstly, it would provide Homag UK with a show piece where they could bring potential customers to see the machine in operation. Secondly, it would give us the opportunity to provide a specialist service for our customers by enabling us to manufacture small runs of both small and large boxes on a next-day delivery.” Twin-pronged approach The new partnership will mean both Homag and Braepac will be promoting the machine in the UK market. James Hilson from Braepac will be working very closely with all the Homag UK sales teams to help them with their customers. When a customer shows interest in the VKS 250, James will carry out a free consultation and do a full packaging report for that customer. One of the key benefits of the partnership from Braepac’s point of view is that it enables it to sell-in both the raw material and the machine (the VKS 250) as a

complete package offering a onestop-shop for customers. A powerful, efficient and reliable stand-alone or inline solution James says: “It’s early days, but we see a huge potential for this partnership. The machine will produce boxes of all sizes, from as small as a 20 x 20 x 20mm, up to a 1 x 1 x 10m box. Whatever you want to produce, the VKS 250 will make it – it’s exceptionally versatile and very, very different to anything else in the market. “It is also extremely easy to set up and operate. There are no complications to it at all; it’s very customer friendly, enabling companies to utilise every aspect of the machine with only the basic training required. The system is controlled with the standard Homag powerTouch software and box dimensions can be fed in via a volumetric scanner, master data – which uses a barcode to gain the product’s dimensions – or manual input. It’s really easy to use. “The VKS 250 can be operated as a stand-alone box-making machine or used inline to provide an on-demand box-making facility on any production line. Homag has produced a very informative video that clearly illustrates this (www.youtube.com/ watch?v=rYg6PORJx8s). “It will process all grades of single and double-wall corrugated board in thicknesses from 2.5mm to 6.5mm. The VKS 250 can be specified as a sheet or a continuous fan-fold corrugated board-fed machine, whichever the production process demands. Being German designed and engineered, it is not

only robust and reliable, but also very safe. The built-in systems mean that operators cannot get too close to areas of potential danger, such as cutting elements, without the machine automatically shutting down until the danger is removed. “Also, the VKS 250 offers impressive return on investment. For example, one Homag customer we are working with is currently spending around £175,000 a year on boxes. By producing its boxes on a VKS 250 the company’s spend on boxes will be reduced by almost 30% per year. That’s a very substantial saving based on materials alone; it doesn’t even take into account wastage, labour and storage space savings.” A strong and fruitful partnership “We’re very confident that this partnership with Homag UK will be a long and fruitful one. It will provide excellent opportunities not only for Homag and Braepac, but also for the customers of both companies who will benefit from the depth of knowledge and experience they can draw on, for both the machine and materials,” concludes James. Simon adds: “Braepac has shown the commitment that will ensure this partnership is successful. They have established themselves as a leader in the singlefaced corrugated market and we want our customers to benefit from their knowledge and experience.” For more information or a demonstration of the Homag VKS 250 automated box-cutting machine, contact Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. braepac.co.uk homag-uk.co.uk

Biomass is fast becoming a preferred option for the fulfilment of heating and hot water needs for many diverse business sectors, with particular attraction to any wood-based business.

A path to a sustainable future The advantages of adopting biomass are compelling. Self-generated biomass fuel will remove the existing cost of the fossil fuel alternatives – gas, oil or electricity – creating substantial savings year on year. Further savings on the cost of gate fees and manpower for the removal of wood waste, often to landfill, can also be achieved. Eco-credentials are maximised with the legitimate claim of almost carbon neutrality for heat and hot water, a useful contribution to corporate social responsibilities. However, perhaps the most persuasive argument for converting to biomass is the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). Paid by the Government, the RHI provides a valuable income stream, index-linked for 20 years, paid on the metered kWh of heat generated by the biomass boiler. How long this incentive will be available for new applicants is unknown, so the sensible option is to strike while the iron is hot – delay could be an expensive mistake.

AFS Biomass is a leader in the promotion and implementation of biomass heating systems. Working in partnership with ETA, the Austrian manufacturer of the very respected and reliable systems, AFS can offer the design, installation and maintenance of bespoke biomass heating systems. As one of the few Carbon Trust Accredited Suppliers in the UK, AFS Biomass has successfully installed systems nationwide from 50kW to 1mW, covering many sectors including furniture manufacturers, sawmills, pallet companies, farms and much more. References are available on request from a large number of highly satisfied clients. P & A Fencing & Sheds in Mold, Wales, a large company producing fencing, sheds, pallets and garden furniture, wanted to replace an LPG-fired boiler heating a wood drying and heat treatment kiln, an oil-fired system heating an office block and portable electric and LPG heaters in the warehouse and workshop.

FP276_Main.indd 18

This was achieved with two 200kW ETA Hack boilers. These were so successful that a second new warehouse with office was added with a third 200kW boiler. The decision was then taken to expand an existing garden centre into two large underused sheds. These were heated with another 200kW boiler delivering heat through overhead multi-directional fan coil radiators, the same as in the warehouses. An on-site hogger is used to prepare wood chip from all the manufacturing off-cuts creating huge savings against the previous fossil fuel costs. The approximate return on investment figures show: biomass system, 4 x 200kW boilers; fuel type, wood chip; fuel savings of £48,500 pa; RHI revenue of £63,000pa; the system cost £373,000; the payback just 3.4 years; CO2 savings of 895 tonnes pa (substantially reducing carbon taxes). 0844 579 1002 afsbiomass.com

Almost 80% of problems related to factory-finished joinery result from items manufactured and supplied during winter months, according to coatings specialist Teknos, which presents a guide to avoiding the problems associated with drying and curing during the colder months …

How to avoid winter drying and curing problems One of the biggest factors that affects the quality of joinery is the drying and curing of the coating system. This stage is greatly affected by low temperatures. To avoid on-site rectification – which adds cost, opens the way for contractual disputes, and can delay payment causing frustration for all the parties involved – it is best to take practical steps to avoid problems in the first instance. Coalescence Modern coating systems dry and cure in two stages. In the first stage of coalescence, water and solvent are removed from the wet film, although they become dry to the touch before all the water has evaporated. The graph shows a typical coalescence curve for water-based acrylic paint. At lower temperatures, and with poor airflow, times are significantly extended, and even though the paint may feel dry, it will still hold significant moisture. The coalescent phase is critical to performance. If joinery is exposed before the paint is fully dried, blistering can occur – particularly in cold weather.

FP276_Main.indd 22

Curing The second stage is curing. This is when the coalesced film chemically cross-links, increasing toughness and adhesion. In summer, full cure is achieved in a few days, but in winter the process slows, stopping completely close to freezing point, and restarting as temperatures rise.

overnight. In cool, still air, very little drying will take place.

Six helpful steps Achieving full coalescence of each coat of paint before joinery is shipped is key to avoiding complaints, and some simple steps will help:

6. Delay wrapping finished joinery for as long as possible. Wrapping and storage in an unheated dispatch area will slow or stop moisture release from the film, preventing full coalescence.

1. Keep paint in a heated store before use, and never leave paint cans on a cold concrete floor.

From windows and doors to cladding or kitchen cabinets, whatever the combination of timber species, colour or application method, Teknos offers a system that enables the creation of a durable and attractive finish. Its range of primers, base stains and top coats help to control the properties of certain wood types, minimise discoloration, maximise durability and protect against problems such as blue stain and surface mould. W teknos.co.uk

2. Follow the lm thickness specification. Overapplication is wasteful and slows the drying process. 3. Try to maintain a warm temperature of 15-20°C in the drying area, using a background heater or ducted and filtered warm workshop air. 4. Avoid switching to heat or air circulation fans

5. Avoid trying to accelerate drying by blasting hot air at joinery items. This will speed up surface drying, but trap moisture in the film and slow down the coalescence process.

Syncron Evora

Luxe Metallo Grupo Alvic’s flagship product, Luxe, is a high-gloss MDF-based material which has impressive scratch resistance and surface quality. Alvic’s strong commitment to innovation and technological development led the company to introduce Zenit, a new super-matt surface, which is soft and silky to the touch, yet highly resistant, with an extremely low matt surface finish. The MFC Syncron range has recently been expanded to include some new original textures, as well as embossed-in-register (EIR) woodgrains. One of the secrets behind the success of Grupo Alvic is its total control of the manufacturing process – from the impregnation and specification of the raw papers to the pressing of the boards, which presents the added benefit of always offering a matching reverse, which is often requested when selling added-value products. Panelco/Meyer Timber are the exclusive

distributors of Alvic decorative boards, and following the positive response to the new decors exhibited at the KBB exhibition, these distributors have added a further 21 finishes to the stock range, making a grand total of 46 different variations of board surfaces, all with matching edgebanding. A nationwide delivery service is offered, and orders received by 5pm are delivered the next day. Barry Berman, who is the UK agent for Grupo Alvic, is naturally excited by the new decors taken on by Panelco/Meyer – especially as the company’s showroom is now displaying the whole range in a large-size format. “Working with Alvic is a pleasure,” says Barry, “as they are constantly improving and innovating their products – and Panelco/Meyer are backing us with extensive stocks to make sure that the Luxe-Zenit-Syncron boards are available on demand.” T 07785 373118 W grupoalvic.com

Blum’s Space Tower larder unit is a remarkably simple, straightforward solution to the storage problems that most kitchens have. Fully-extendable drawers mean that every single centimetre of space is utilised, with no need to leave gaps above and below each drawer to manoeuvre items in and out …

Introducing the larder leader Blum has calculated that up to 55% more accessible storage can be achieved by using pull-out drawers rather than shelves, and Space Tower can be used at all levels of the market – interiors can be designed to accommodate every budget. Each drawer has the option of flexible inner dividing systems such as Ambia-Line or OrgaLine to organise the interiors for all shapes and sizes of packets, boxes and bottles. It is available in various widths and heights, to cater for all kitchen, bedroom and bathroom sizes. When it comes to motion in the home, Blum’s Blumotion, Tip-On Blumotion and Servo Drive systems ensure ease of use. Both Servo Drive and Tip-On Blumotion opening mechanisms make the popular handle-less cabinets open at a touch. Handle-less cabinetry accounts for a growing proportion of the UK market, following its popularity in Europe. Blum’s systems ensure handle-less designs open and close flawlessly, avoiding unnecessary finger marks on glossy drawer-fronts. Open-plan living/dining kitchens are also a growing trend in the UK. Kitchen owners want sleek cabinets that hide everything away, yet which still offer easy access and immediate viewing of everything stored. Space Tower offers those advantages for tall storage cabinets, and Blum’s opening and closing systems and internal dividing systems, Ambia-Line and OrgaLine, keep the interiors under control, ensuring the contents remain upright, neat and easily recognisable. Leeds-based panel products supplier Lawcris is replenishing its shelves following the successful launch of the Egger-manufactured ST27 range …

A cost-effective alternative to fashionable painted timber An upmarket look previously only available to consumers at the top end of the market, has become accessible to the middle market. The ST27 melamine collection is one of the latest lines from Egger, and offers a cost-effective alternative to painted timber. The trend towards painted timber in kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms and furniture shows little sign of slowing, and the innovative ST27 boards have been designed to replicate real timber – according to Egger, they are “virtually indistinguishable” from the real thing, but available at a significantly lower cost. ST27 is now well established in some of the UK’s leading kitchen and furniture manufacturers’ ranges. The collection consists of 10 carefully-selected decors in popular neutral solid colours, as well as a painting grade option. This bespoke approach means that customers are able to select a colour of their choice and have the boards sprayed to meet their requirements. Unlike timber, the depth of the ST27 texture means that the details are not lost through the spraying process. Lawcris’ head of procurement, Dean Carroll, says: “We are always looking to bring in new and innovative products that we know will be popular with our customers. Egger have proved once again that they are really listening to the market by developing the ST27 collection, which can be used to replicate the highly-popular painted finish to which so many end-users aspire, but are reluctant to pay for.” ›››

This low-cost, low-maintenance product is available in either MFC or MF MDF. These boards do not require any further treatment other than edging and as a melamine-finished product, they offer all the hard wearing properties one would expect from a melamine board. Additionally, the painting grade option is already primed and does not need the preparation time of timber or veneer. The depth of the ST27 texture means that the defined grains are not lost when painted. All decors are available with matching 23 x 0.8mm ABS edging on 75m rolls – this thinner edging provides a sleeker look. 32 SOFTWARE

www.furnitureproduction.net

Turin Components which pioneered both bespoke carcasses and nesting in the Irish Republic says the Cabinet Vision software – which designs its products and drives its two CNC nesters, beam saw and boring machine – means it can produce exactly what customers want … and it saves on waste.

Cabinet Vision “costs money, but saves a lot more” says bespoke carcass pioneer Donal Walshe saw an opening in the Irish furniture market for bespoke carcasses in 2008, and established Turin Components to begin manufacturing them. “At the time there were a lot of imported carcasses, but we were the first to manufacture curved units of any shape and size that the customer required.” And having seen how efficient nesting could be on a visit to a company in England, he decided to focus on nesting as the most costeffective way of cutting MFC and MDF carcasses for kitchens, bedrooms, offices, bathrooms and student accommodation. The company also produces hospital cabinets manufactured in the revolutionary waterproof and anti-bacterial material, Sealwise. Today Turin has two Andi nesters programmed by Cabinet Vision’s Screen-To-Machine module, and are considering investing in a third next year. Padraig Mullin is project manager and programmer for the nesting process: “I input every job into Cabinet Vision, and finalise the design, and type and colour of material, along with drawers and hinges. “I have a database of existing units in the Cabinet Vision library, and it’s so easy to manipulate one of those to come up with what the customer requires. If I move a shelf, Cabinet Vision automatically moves the shelf studs … if I change a door size it moves all the assolciated fixtures and fittings. For instance, if it’s a base unit I simply edit the size, depth and height, and then optimise it in Screen-To-Machine and send the NC code to whichever Andi has been assigned to the job.” As an example of how easy Cabinet Vision handles Turin Components’ bespoke speciality, he cites a recent case where 18 cabinets for a customer’s showroom were all different offstandard sizes, and one of the display units required a full line of 2mm centred holes to fasten dividers in place. The former hands-on

chippy says it was simple to edit a unit to provide the holes in their unique positioning. Another Cabinet Vision benefit is optimising material usage. “The average nest has between 20 and 30 components, and once I’ve designed them all I nest them on to our standard 2800 x 2700mm chipboard sheets, and it keeps waste to an absolute minimum.” Reducing waste is another important factor for Donal Walshe when it comes to the Prima EVO beam saw, and he says Cabinet Vision makes best use of the sheet by planning out cut patterns more efficiently than proprietary software, and is especially useful if there is a requirement for the grain to go a particular way. It also measures out and pre-plans the boring pattern, on their REM boring machine. It is Brendan Sheridan’s role to program both the beam saw and the REM. He says: “It’s so simple to set up both processes from information about each panel that’s in the Cabinet Vision program. Previously, we had to program everything at the machines themselves, which was a matter of breaking every cabinet down size by size and programming it individually, which was far more time consuming.” Overall, Cabinet Vision’s optimisation and ability to reduce waste are major benefits for both Turin Components’ nesting and beam saw operations, along with speeding up the design process. Donal Walshe says: “If we had to manually work out all the cuts, turns, cams and hole positions, and pre-plan every gable, we’d From left, Marie Cassidy, Donal Walshe and Padraig Mullin never produce anything. The

FP276_Main.indd 32

software does cost money – but it saves us an awful lot more.” His design and programming team is mainly former kitchen retailers or fitters, so is readily able to solve any issues regarding customer requests for something that may be particularly difficult to achieve. “We have a first class reputation throughout Ireland for producing bespoke cabinets, and Cabinet Vision is a vital part of our service in giving people the exact kitchen they ask for,” says Donal. And it’s not just the actual CAD/CAM suite from Vero Software that he is impressed with. “You can have the best and most powerful software on the market, but if it doesn’t have the right support behind it, it’s no good to you. Cabinet Vision’s business manager, Marie Cassidy, is absolutely key to our success with it. She knows our business needs, and her personal connection with us ensures that we can use Cabinet Vision in just the right way to achieve what we need.” He likens the relationship to how it work with it own customers. “People know we make carcasses for kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms, but without our team sitting down with them and explaining that we can produce any curved or S-shaped unit and that they can have a different coloured edging, they wouldn’t know exactly what our capabilities are. “It’s all about expressing the knowledge of the actual system to customers and providing a sound backup support service.” Working exclusively for the trade, Turin Components shipped 32,000 assembled units last year – mostly kitchens – and have around 70 customers with high end showrooms in high end locations. With business developing constantly, it relocated from a 20,000ft2 site, into a 72,000ft2 premises at Shrule in County Mayo, during Christmas 2015. verosoftware.com

imos software transforms output at Spacestor in3D Software Ltd is the authorised UK partner of German CAD/CAM furniture manufacturing software specialist imos AG. In this article, Furniture Production speaks to one of imos’ newest UK customers to discover how its state-of-the-art solutions have helped transform the business … Workspace furniture creator Spacestor appreciates how much influence the office environment can have on the productiveness of employees. With extensive experience in the field derived from working with clients including Google, Apple and Jaguar Land Rover, Spacestor has developed a range of furniture products to help maximise staff engagement. Spacestor’s mission to “combine California cool with London design”– a mantra that comes to life in its design centres in California and Clerkenwell – requires some of the most advanced design tools available. The company, which creates workplace solutions for clients including BMW, Georgio Armani, Zurich, Samsung, HSBC and Microsoft, boasts around 500 UK clients, principally in the commercial and education sectors. Spacestor employs around 200 people, most of which operate from its headquarters in Hemel Hempstead. The number of CNC machines in operation there has grown steadily in recent years, says assistant to operations director Leo Kingston. “Our CNCs were manually programmed before we implemented imos’ software, but they ended up linking together very well,” he says. “Summer is our busiest period – this year in particular, imos has proved absolutely invaluable for the production of bespoke units.” Five years ago, Spacestor invested in a software package that proved unable to achieve the company’s specific construction methods and more creative design requirements, as it seemed designed solely for cabinets – so Leo did not have high expectations for imos’ solutions at the outset. However, the new software, which was installed around six months ago, has proved eminently flexible, dealing well with both standard and non-standard parts, including elements sourced from external suppliers. “Our focus has turned to using the software for the more unique and bespoke elements of the furniture,” says Leo. “Initially, we required it to deal with our standard ranges, but were excited to see its potential come to fruition when utilising it for our popular Snugglestor range and Railway

imos offers a comprehensive CAD/CAM design solution Carriage products.During training, we were excited to see the way it could handle the more challenging architectural products we offer. “The capabilities of the package meant we actually changed focus once we started implementing it – there was a quick win in using it for our completely bespoke cupboard system, Forte, as we could design and make almost anything we were asked for, and build it with our new dowelling system.” Leo says that Spacestor specialises in a ‘C’ construction method, in which a standalone cabinet is first assembled on site, and any subsequent cabinets share an adjoining side panel – an approach that reduces material and assembly costs, but makes the manufacture and CNC programming behind the shared parts more complex. imos’ software has truly come into its own in bridging the gap between design and machine, says Leo. “We previously had numerous process and stages involved,” he says. “Processing a job from sales through to manufacture required a number of people to pass information on in a timely manner – including the costing and taking off of required parts from stock, material to be machined and fitting to be collated. “When we first presented our process to in3D, including the design stage using our previous CAD/ CAM software, they were confident that they would be able to automate and simplify the entire process. We now have CAD/ CAM software that not only lets our project managers and production designers create presentation drawings and visuals, but also the required

paperwork and reports that our estimators and project co-ordinators need in order to track a job though. “Also, being able to instantly generate the CNC programmes for the standard and bespoke parts is something we couldn’t do previously.” The support provided by in3D, both in the form of on-site training and remotely via the internet, has proved extremely helpful, says Leo, whose team, having undergone an intensive training course, now makes frequent contact with the supplier to discuss specifics. Additionally, now the CAD/CAM modules are installed and connected to the machines at Spacestor, the manufacturer has implanted custom reports that use data supplied by imos to further distribute specific manufacturing information to various departments within the factory. “At this stage, while we are still learning and finding more and more uses for the software within the company, we are frequently in touch with the team at in3D,” says Leo. “They are extremely helpful, quick to respond and often provide us with more than just support. “We are really excited that soon we’ll have the costing elements set up, which will in turn help streamline our estimation and quoting process. We are currently investigating how our online presence can benefit our customers by using the imos data. Spacestor prides itself on producing imaginative commercial storage solutions tailored to the needs of each client, and imos’ software means that its work for clients big and small – in the UK and Silicon Valley – has the potential to reach new heights of flexibility and efficiency. Regarding the solutions and service provided by in3D Software, Leo concludes: “I can’t fault it. It is so flexible. “With this software, I believe that everything is possible.” 01249 783332 in3d.co.uk spacestor.uk.com

The advancement of technology holds great potential for staircase manufacturers that want to stay ahead of the game. Upgrading of machines for automated loading via robots promises a significantly more efficient production process – but machines alone do not guarantee success ‌

Staircase manufacturing technology advances Stair builders need efficient software to run their equipment. Compass Software has recently set up two five-axis machining centres for one of its Swedish customers. Both machines are loaded automatically with the aid of robots. Compass Software controls the data flow for both the machine and the robot. The software generates CNC programs and vacuum cup positions, as well as work lists for the entire machining centre. Producing with robots saves stair builders an immense amount of time and manpower as the machines can run while controllers are on break and can even work an additional shift during the night. The two machines in Sweden utilise different systems for the automated loading and unloading with robots. The first machine, which is used to manufacture different staircase parts, functions via a waiting queue system. The workers prepare the queue in advance and provide the material in the exact order necessary to complete the queue. The robot then loads and unloads the machining centre according to the queue, which ensures unmanned production. The second machine, which is used to manufacture treads, works with barcodes. All material is tagged with barcodes. The robot automatically loads the material onto a re-grip station which is equipped with a barcode scanner. The scanner communicates with the machine and identifies the part. The robot then loads the part onto the machine where it is correctly processed. This system does not require any order or preparing of queues for production.

All CNC codes are generated right before production. Both systems save the stair builder an immense amount of time and personnel. Employees can work on other projects while the machine runs automatically and production does not have to stop overnight. Even stair builders that do not want to invest in new machinery can benefit. Compass Software has successfully upgraded old SBA3 machines with robots in the past. Even though the old machine is slower, the upgrade still results in beneficial time saving and innovative production, as well as simultaneously opening up the valuable capacities of skilled workers. compass-software.uk

Software expert Ardis Optimisation has enabled Ladenbau Hunold to become a more efficient manufacturer.

Ardis at Ladenbau Hunold

Typical work from Ladenbau Hunold Ladenbau Hunold from Leinefelde-Worbis in Germany, is known for its extraordinary shopfitting designs – every realisation starts with a particular idea, which distinguishes the company from others and results in high quality as it is hand made. Ladenbau Hunold is the right partner for the full order process, from design to installation.

Ladenbau Hunold works with the latest optimisation technology from Ardis. Projects are designed in a third party 3D CAD software. Parts data are transferred from CAD to Ardis to be analysed. The optimisation chooses the best production strategy while looking for the right balance between material- and machine use. Ardis Optimisation from Belgium has been

FP276_Main.indd 38

active in sheet optimisation since 1989. For many years, Ardis exclusively developed sheet optimisation for saw cutting. During the last decade, developments were oriented to optimise material use and production time, which Ardis calls Optimised Parts Production. Optimised Parts Production stands for defining how the part should be best made in function of: material availability – standard sheets and rests pieces; parts geometry – normal size, too big or too small for standard machining; production tools – saw cutting and nesting machines, edgebanders, routers, dowelling machines, carcass presses; work in process limitations – available work space, transport and sorting; and shipment planning – due date for assembly. The mission of Ardis and Ladenbau Hunold was to get everything aligned. The Ardis software gets the parts dimensions and their geometry. The geometry is then analysed against the production facility possibilities. If any conflict arises, manufacturing procedures are changed. If a part is too small for the edgebander, the cutting process will be adapted in such a way that the part can get its edgebands in the most efficient way. If another part could be nested, material logic may enforce to cut the part on the saw anyway since smaller parts and rest pieces may cause problems on the nesting machine. The part will not be nested but optimised for cutting at the beam saw and labelled for machining at a standard CNC machine.

Serious attention is given to efficiency in both office preparation and production. The modern 3D CAD program, used in the office, offers the possibility to work projects out in every detail. The result from design is taken over by the Ardis parts production software. Each part geometry is analysed for the machining options. On the production floor Ladenbau Hunold has a beam saw and a CNC router for nesting, which are loaded by an automated warehouse. There is also a doweling machine, edgebander and a classic CNC machine with cups and assembly machines. Sheet material inventory is kept by the unique patented pending rest

management solution of Ardis. At Ladenbau Hunold, Ardis integrated the existing warehouse software in the Ardis materials management software. It manages offcuts in an efficient and timely manner too. Further Ardis replaced the on-line labelling at the beam saw and provided labelling data for the nesting machine. The beam saw, nesting machine, dowelling machines and CNC machines all get their adapted programs from Ardis. The programs are activated through scanning a bar code on a well-designed label on the parts having text, drawings and pictograms. 00 32 (0)50 728 989 ardis.com

Advanced approval for SCM Accord Norfolk-based company Advanced Joinery has nothing but praise for its new SCM Accord 25 FX.

Lee Ellis, MD at Advanced Joinery, is full of praise for the new SCN Accord 25 FX CNC machining centre Installation of the five-axis CNC machining centre was completed towards the end of 2015 and today, after mastering some of the infinite possibilities achievable with the Accord 25 FX, Advanced Joinery is utilising its full potential in production of high quality, bespoke architectural windows and doors. Lee Ellis, MD at Advanced Joinery, began his career in the woodworking industry as a classically trained furniture maker, and his knowledge of timber and timber processing gained in these early years, together with a natural eye for detail, have been the foundation for his success with the business he has created and manages ‘hands-on’ today. In the early 1990s, Lee recognised that there was a growing market for high-performance timber windows and doors and, turning his focus from furniture making to bespoke joinery, he established The Joinery Shop based in a garage workshop in the village of Aylsham. During the following two decades the business evolved from a small, one-man-band operation to become a successful commercial enterprise with an efficient and enthusiastic team of joiners, sprayers, fitters and office staff. The company has a strong client base of both trade and private customers throughout eastern England, and is ideally located in proximity to conservation areas where traditional wooden joinery is an essential requirement for building

FP276_Main.indd 44

improvement, restoration and new build. The expanding business was outgrowing the small workshop and, in 2014, Lee made the decision to make a move to larger premises – the planned move also precipitated a change in the company name to Advanced Joinery (East) Ltd, and the business was relocated to a 7000ft2 industrial unit in nearby Marsham.

Following the move to new premises, demand for the company’s products has increased exponentially and, although the well-organised workshop was already equipped with an impressive array of SCM machinery – including a T130 spindle moulder, Sandya 300 belt sander, F41 Nova planer moulder and a Compact NTE five-head moulder, which all contributed to the

company’s core production – there was a clear need for investment in machinery that could cope with the increase in business volume. Lee comments: “Advanced Joinery is renowned for its quality products, so a key criterion for any investment in new machinery, to increase production speed and capacity, was that our finished product quality would not be compromised.” Because of Lee’s longstanding relationship with SCM Group UK, he had no hesitation in contacting industrial sales manager Ian McCarthy to discuss the company’s requirements for a production machine that could take Advanced Machinery’s capabilities to a new level. This was going to represent a major step forward for Advanced Joinery and Lee spent several months exploring the various machine options available from SCM. Finally, following a visit to the group’s headquarters and demonstration centre in Rimini, Italy, the decision was made to proceed with the investment in a new five-axis Accord 25 FX CNC machining centre. However, this was just the start of a journey for Lee and the team: “Acquiring a new set of IT skills was a daunting prospect,” admits Lee, “but the hard work and effort is really paying dividends. We now have a wide range of standard profiles and designs that can be re-sized to suit any dimensional requirements, or readily customised for bespoke projects.” SCM has a close working relationship with leading CAD-CAM software provider Kosmosoft which specialises in custom solutions for the window and door manufacturing sector. “Installing the Kosmosoft software was an obvious choice for Advanced Joinery, says Lee, “and, although the learning curve was a steep one, we were supported all the way by SCM, and Kosmosoft have been very helpful.”

Setting clamps for irregular-shaped workpieces is completed in seconds

The Accord 25 FX provides strong performance and is designed specifically to fulfil the demanding requirements of small-to medium-sized workshops. Combining hightech performance with intuitive, user-friendly operation, the Accord 25 FX has the flexibility and capability for high quality machining of panels, doors, windows, stairs, and complex solid wood components, as well as machining a variety of other materials such as composites, plastics and light alloys. The Accord 25 FX can be specified in a wide range of standard sizes and the mobile gantry allows precision machining across the entire bed. Advanced Joinery opted for an X-Y machining area of 5020 x 1680mm, with the capacity for machining large workpieces up to 250mm high in the Z axis.

The Accord 25 FX is ergonomically designed and combines high speed operation with total operator safety, whilst allowing maximum access to the worktable; during machining operations the gantry travels the length of the bed at a top speed of 60m/min but contact with the advanced patented safety bumpers instantly reduces travel to 25m/min. Where installation space allows, horizontal photocells can also be specified as an option to cut machine speed if the operator steps within a metre of the machine. The air-conditioned electrical control box is integrated into the machine bed which enables a compact overall machine size – particularly important for the smaller workshop where installation space is often limited. The Accord 25 FX can be specified with either ›››

Alternatively, the machining centre can be supplied with a multi-function aluminium worktable with a sophisticated suction system allowing optimum hold-down for production of nested components, and equally efficient positioning and removal of suction cups and other jigs or fixing devices. At Advanced Joinery the machine specification included eight automatic bars, which are all independently driven by a rack and pinion direct transmission system, and each of the eight bars

are fitted with three motorised bases for support clamps and suction cups – all of which are equipped with cleaning blowers to clear chips and dust during machining. The Prisma KT machining head, with five interpolating axes, is equipped with an 11kW electrospindle capable of rotation speeds from 600 to 18,000rpm, and is fixed directly to the mobile gantry to guarantee maximum strength and torque during routing, facilitating high levels of stock removal, when necessary, and achieving the highest quality finish. The geometry of the Prisma head also allows machining up to 10o below the workpiece support level. For tooling, Lee Ellis has worked closely with

Oertli UK which has assisted the company with the manufacture of a complex range of cutting tools, specifically designed to accomplish Advanced Joinery’s requirements for production of both traditional and contemporary windows and doors. “We have a total of 44 individual tools available to us,” explains Lee, “and many of the individual tools incorporate several discreet cutting profiles which provides us with almost infinite flexibility to create intricate designs or replicate historical features for architectural restoration projects.” The tools are arranged in two banks – one to the right hand side of the machine, where 12 regular tools are stored, and a further 32 tools stored in the automatic tool-changer which travels in tandem with the moving gantry for rapid tool changes on the fly. “We are delighted with the new Accord,” says Lee, “the combination of the machining technology, the software, and our own creativity, allows us to create stunning windows, doors, arches and, more importantly, we can reproduce the same pieces, exactly matching, and in a fraction of the time it would take using traditional joinery methods. Now we are up to speed with operating knowledge and tooling, we conservatively predict that this investment could enable us to double current turnover.” Ian McCarthy concludes: “It has been a pleasure dealing with Advanced Joinery – Lee’s outlook is progressive and forward-looking and he has, without doubt, maximised the benefits afforded by the investment in CNC technology.” 0115 977 0044 scmgroup.me.uk

Homag UK smoothes the manufacturing flow process for Bluespot Furniture Dewsbury based Bluespot Furniture Ltd provides a full range of office furniture from functional cantilever desking to the most complex designs, all manufactured in-house to the highest quality standards at competitive prices.

Edge-trimming on the Homag Optimat BAZ 722 Long-term investment in machinery and systems has enabled Bluespot to offer industry-leading delivery times from a next day service on e-commerce ranges and 7-10 working days on Bluespot branded furniture from receipt of order. The company has over 7500 product lines available from stock, all produced in its 37,000ft2 manufacturing facility which it moved into in December 2013. Established in 2001, Bluespot has been a Homag advocate since the early days; the business made its first investment into a Homag machine in 2003 and since then has become progressively dependent on Homag equipment. Bluespot operations director, Dr Andrew Cooper, takes up the story: “Our entire manufacturing system has been built around Homag Group equipment because it is the most reliable and technically advanced on the market. A reputation to protect “Our business is built on reputation and we

FP276_Main.indd 50

cannot afford to let quality or delivery issues tarnish that reputation. We have to be absolutely certain that we can deliver product on time, whether that is a large contract order or a bespoke piece of office furniture – we owe it to our customers to deliver on time at a competitive price. “In 2013, with business expanding and our existing beam saw in need of replacement, we made the decision to invest in a new manufacturing facility. This gave us the opportunity to look carefully at our manufacturing flow process and where possible, automate the system to minimise materials handling and forklift truck movements around the facility. The Bargstedt/Holzma Store ‘n’ Saw – an automated storage and retrieval system “We undertook a comprehensive evaluation of equipment and systems that would help us achieve our goals and it soon became clear that integrated control software would be a pivotal factor in our decision making.

“For Bluespot, cutting of sheet material is the cornerstone of the manufacturing processes. It feeds the rest of the production cycle and whilst our previous saw had been very reliable, we wanted the new saw to integrate into the whole system. A couple of years earlier we had visited the Holzma factory in Germany and were extremely impressed with the performance of its range of beam saws. “We first saw the Bargstedt Store ‘n’ Saw system at a Homag UK open house and because it is designed to feed the Holzma beam saw it was a particularly attractive combination. The clincher for us though was the software which provided a totally integrated control system. The software for the saw is Cut Rite which is very easy to use and we also purchased the Homag e-solutions software which was specifically developed for furniture manufacturers. With e-solutions, it is easy for us to optimise production processes from initial design concept through to completed product.

A smooth transition to our new premises “Once the decision was made to go with Homag they were heavily involved with the moving process. Our sales contact at Homag UK, John Shepherd, and John Brittan did a sterling job planning and orchestrating the move with our senior management team. “The plan was to start moving machinery over to the new facility in September 2013 in such a way that we could maintain uninterrupted production. Given the layout we knew that the last items to be installed in the new factory had to be the Holzma HPP 300 saw and the Bargstedt storage system. “Thanks to the Homag Group’s ability to hit delivery dates spot on and the hard work of both our own people and Homag UK, we were able to successfully complete the final piece of our move the week before Christmas, with no loss of production. Clean, efficient work flow process “The new system is fantastic; it has made a huge difference to our manufacturing performance. Now, when sheet material is delivered, it is simply a case of using the forklift truck to load it into the Bargstedt storage system input bay. All the operator has to do is scan the boards in and the system does the rest. “The storage system gets the right boards ready and automatically loads them onto the back of the saw as and when they are needed. This ensures a constant flow of work even with one-off items. The system knows exactly what’s in stock at any given point in time and also manages the off-cuts, using them whenever it is feasible to do so. This minimises waste and ensures we maximise the use of our stock. “The system has enabled us to completely eliminate the movement of forklift trucks around the production area, making it far safer for our employees and customers alike. It has also

Edgebanding section of Bluespot’s impressive facility

Weeke CNC drilling and routing machines in Bluespot’s new manufacturing facility eliminated the need for employees to manually handle the large heavy boards which has therefore eradicated board damage from mis-handling and created a happier, healthier workforce.

Both machinery and company are totally reliable “All the Homag Group machinery is totally reliable. The modem link for fault-finding gives us real peace of mind and on the odd occasions when parts need replacing, Homag UK’s 24-hour turn round on parts usually gets us back up and running very quickly. “There is no doubt that the equipment we have installed has given us an increase in manpower productivity. Our ability to respond to orders has improved and we are able to deliver first-class products at value-for-money prices exactly when the customer wants them. “As for Homag UK, they are a straightforward company to work with; you know exactly where you stand and you can rely on them one hundred percent. They always provide a detailed specification of what you have ordered and if there are issues, it is just a case of sitting down with them and discussing what needs to be done to achieve a satisfactory result,” concludes Andrew. DCS maximises Broadley Group’s investment Dust Control Systems (DCS) recently completed the installation and commissioning of a new energy-saving dust extraction system for the Leeds-based Broadley Group. DCS conservatively predict that the installation, for the group’s joinery shop, will realise power savings of over 50%.

From its roots as a small family decorating business founded in 1963 by Arthur Broadley, the business now provides building construction, maintenance and refurbishment services. Although Broadley’s now operates with around 200 employees, the business still exudes family values – Gary Broadley is joint chairman, and the workforce now includes many second generation employees. Combining modern methods of working with traditional craftsmanship, the joinery division offers bespoke and general manufacture, including shop fronts, reception counters, and kitchen and bedroom furniture, as well as providing commercial joinery services to other Broadley divisions. At Broadley Group, DCS engineers undertook a full site survey which also included a free energy-saving appraisal. The workshop was well equipped with a range of classical machinery, various saws, and a four-sided planer moulder but, in addition, the new extraction system had to be designed to accommodate a recently-installed wide-belt sander, and also provide capacity for planned future investment in production machinery – almost doubling the current extraction requirement. Although the anticipated total extraction capacity requirement would be over 30,000m3, DCS was able to recommend a new filter unit with a capacity of just 18,500m3. Melvyn Bathgate, sales director at DCS, explains: “The existing extraction system was

Keith Abbott, joinery manager at Broadley Group, checking readout on the Ecogate PowerMASTER

already working at capacity, operating 10 hours a day, five days a week, and planned investment in new machinery had precipitated a comprehensive upgrade of the extraction system. “However, the nature of the work produced at Broadley means that much of the specialist machinery is only used infrequently, and a significant percentage of the 70,000kW hours currently consumed every year by the fan was

Ecogate motorised gates are incorporated into the extraction ducting from each machine – opening and closing automatically to provide extraction only when machines are in use

FP276_Main.indd 55

wasted energy. DCS were able to demonstrate conclusively that a new, high-performance filter, combined with an Ecogate extraction optimisation system, would provide the required extraction from all machines – but only when they were in use.” DCS has installed and commissioned an externally-sited NFSZ3000 2HJLR modular filter with pressure-free discharge of collected waste, via a rotary valve, into an enclosed skip. The filter construction includes two explosion relief panels to comply with ATEX requirements and, as recommended by ATEX regulations, a CARZ explosion isolation flap valve is also included between the fan outlet and the filter inlet – preventing the effect of pressure wave and flames, in the event of an explosion, from travelling upstream in the ductwork in which it is mounted. In the workshop, all machines are fitted with Ecogate motorised gates which open and close automatically when an individual machine comes on or offline. The Ecogate signals a change in extraction requirement to the Ecogate greenBOX 12+ controller, which in turn instructs the Ecogate PowerMASTER variable speed drive inverter unit to adjust the fan speed accordingly. The 30kW fan is precisely regulated to optimise power usage and the net result is a system that will be saving Broadley Group at least 52% on electric bills in the coming year, and will give a return on the investment within four years. Extraction ducting was redesigned throughout the workshop and several machines were fitted with new machine hoods fabricated from fully-welded, heavy gauge mild steel. Return air ductwork allows cleaned warm air to be returned to the building in winter and discharged to atmosphere in summer by the manual operation of summer/winter dampers. The filter unit is fitted with patented antistatic Superbag filter media, and the system also features a reverse air filter regeneration fan. Keith Abbott, joinery manager at Broadley Group, had nothing but praise for DCS: “We were highly delighted with the service we received from Melvyn and the team of engineers and, as an added bonus, we now have a much quieter office environment … the difference this installation has made is something of a step change for Broadley, on both production and financial fronts.” 0800 040 7116 DCSlimited.co.uk

Rising from the flames with Felder In November last year, Woodworkx2Composite’s purpose-built workshop full of Felder machinery was burnt to the ground in an arson attack that left nothing standing. Fortunately, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the company has managed to rebuild and move on from the incident, and is beginning to grow again … Woodworkx2Composite owner Mark Dabner says: “We had invested in a huge amount of machinery – cutting equipment for timber and furniture making. We also had two offices kitted out with the latest design equipment and CAD drawings. Everything went up in the fire, and we had nothing left. “After the fire, Felder Group UK helped us to get back on our feet, helping us to source machines we could use to get the business up and running again, and always being on hand to help when we needed it.” Woodworkx2Composite now provides a complete CNC routing and joinery service with in-house design and finishing facilities. Its slogan is ‘Where technology meets tradition’, and the company uses modern technology such as the Profit H200 from Felder’s Format-4 range, plus a number of traditional methods of woodworking. This variety of tools allows

Woodworkx2Composite to make anything desired – all it takes is an initial idea alongside its CNC machining centre and CAD experience. “We first met Felder at W14, where we decided to buy our first machine from Felder Group UK, and from there we have been able to develop a strong relationship,” says Mark. “The support and service has been perfect – they are always available on the phone or via email, which was handy when getting used to the new system.” Mark goes on to talk about his CNC machine: “Its versatility and flexibility is incredible. It has given us unlimited scope, and now quirky designs can be done perfectly – we really can make anything!” Current projects include everything from Bob the T-Rex, unique shower trays, campervan refurbishments, office furniture and much more. Second Striebig solves sawing bottleneck Whether working for private or commercial customers, the name of the game is to become as efficient as possible – which means using the best and most appropriate woodworking machinery available. One of the worst things that can happen is a bottleneck that causes a slowdown in the entire production process ‌

Production manager Keith Aubrey with the elderly Striebig Automat, which has given sterling service

This problem was nipped in the bud by highquality residential and commercial bespoke joinery and cabinetry specialist NBJ London, whose latest Striebig vertical panel saw has prevented what could have been serious sawing delays in its rural Leicestershire workshop. Previously known as NBJ Midlands, the business changed its name when it realised it was losing out on commissions from its chief customers, London-based designers and architects, who considered it too far away from the capital. The company designs, produces and installs a wide range of made-to-measure items including fitted furniture, cabinetry, kitchens, windows, staircases, fine mouldings and traditional joinery. In addition to employing skilled joiners, machinists and spray painters, the company has an in-house design team of draughtsmen with extensive technical experience. This ensures that often-complicated sophisticated design concepts are followed through to completion and fitting.

A section of a wooden circular staircase, some of the components of which were sized on the Striebig Control “More than 90% of our work comes through designers and architects who work for high-end private customers in the London area,” says production manager Keith Aubrey. “Providing the highest quality bespoke work on time as promised is fundamental to the success of the business, and is something that our demanding clients insist on.” With an increase in orders, the workshop’s existing flat-bed saw and elderly Striebig Automat vertical panel saw were proving insufficient to handle all the extra sizing work needed, so another saw was sought to provide additional capacity. “Having men waiting to get on one of the two saws was not good and we were losing efficiency,” says Keith. “It was agreed that having another flat-bed saw would take up far too much space, so we decided to go for a second vertical panel model. “We were very happy with the original Striebig, which was extremely reliable and has not given us any problems over the years. So, despite looking at some other makes, we decided to buy a second, more up-to-date Striebig, which we consider to be the best vertical panel saw on the market.” The company’s new fully-automatic Control

FP276_Main.indd 61

6224 – the largest model in the nine-strong Control series – has a cutting range of 5300 x 2240mm, and a cutting depth of 80mm. It is used for sizing mainly sheets of MDF – either plain or veneered with some laminated, for which the saw’s optional scoring blade is ideal – and some plywood. Designed as a comprehensive vertical cutting centre to meet the demanding needs of today’s panel processors, the Control sets itself apart from other vertical panel saws with its high degree of automation and user-friendly operations that deliver secure, risk-free operation. With manual work becoming a thing of the past, it guarantees that sizing is performed easily, quickly and totally accurately. Among the saw’s key features are an automated cut cycle with panel end detection, laser-assisted indication of the horizontal cut, a ‘touch and saw’ operating system, and precision machine parts of the saw frame manufactured to an accuracy of 1/100mm. The unique ‘touch and saw’ operating system developed by Striebig is activated via an innovative programmable control system with a touchscreen panel. Simply touch the panel with the finger tips to carry out every operation, while

the 7.5in colour display screen visualises all functions. This easy-to-use system ensures that operating errors are reduced to a minimum. With pneumatic assistance, the saw unit plunges fully automatically into the panel. Feed speeds can be adjusted between 10 and 25m/min, and individually adjusted to the material being sized. Other advanced features built in as standard include panel end recognition, constant return speed of the saw unit, an operating-hour meter and a digital measuring system on both axes. “As all of our work is bespoke, we needed a saw that would provide us with total flexibility, and the Striebig does just that,” says Keith. “Once a panel has been placed on the saw it’s a one-man job to cut it to size. It’s always highly accurate, with speedier set-up time, improved panel support and far less dust created around it. All in all it has been a great investment which has boosted our sawing efficiency as well as taking up a minimum of valuable workshop space.” The Swiss-made Control was supplied by Striebig’s sole UK agent, TM Machinery Sales, which also carried out the installation and provided operator training. Gallito’s finishing touch at Ellis Furniture Spray booth and drying systems specialist, Gallito Ltd, recently completed the installation of a new paint-spraying facility for leading furniture manufacturer Ellis Furniture. At its factory in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, Ellis Furniture designs and manufactures strong, durable and safe furniture to meet challenging environments such as schools and universities, care homes and hotels, as well as manufacturing high quality kitchen and bathroom furniture for the retail market. Founded in 1891 by J Thomas Ellis, and at the forefront of UK furniture-making for 125 years, Ellis Furniture still remains a privately-owned family business. Today, operating from a modern factory with 200,000ft2 of production space, the company designs and manufactures furniture to exacting standards, and utilises a combination of traditional skills with some of the most up-to-date production machinery of its kind. Manufacturing is complemented by an extensive finishing and assembly facility where the company’s latest investment in technology has been undertaken to fulfil the needs of a changing market requirement. Ellis Furniture’s engineering manager, Paul Dudley, explains: “Our production processes cover a wide range of materials including high pressure laminates, MFC, real woods and veneers, as well as painting and lacquering a variety of different substrates.

Inside, three individual booths each provide over 6m2 of filter area, and removable partitions allow up to 9m wide filtration when required

“Since the launch of our 1891 painted collection of kitchens and bathrooms, demand for paint-finished products has continued to grow, and the decision was made to invest in an automatic panel spray painting line to manage this increasing demand.

“However, we needed to retain our capability of undertaking short run and tailored production and, since this would be uneconomic to run on the automatic paint line, we still had a requirement for hand-spraying and a traditional spray booth.”

With a working floor area of 40m2, the Gallito enclosure provides Ellis Furniture with a clean, safe environment for paint spraying The company previously had two individual spray booths which had been sufficient for its needs in the past but, they were not in the ideal location, and both booths were now nearing the end of their serviceable life. Paul continues: “We have a long history with Dust Control Systems; they’ve maintained our extraction system for many years, and have previously installed an Ecogate extraction optimisation system for us, and a highly-efficient 110,000m3/ hr Schuko filter. “We have always been delighted with their product quality, their engineering know-how and, in particular, their attitude to customer service. “When we knew the time had come to invest in a new spray booth, we had no hesitation in calling in Gallito, one of the DCS group of companies, to present a design proposal.” Following a site visit to Ellis Furniture, Ian Ward, MD of Gallito, put forward a proposal for a fully contained 50m2 enclosure, housing three separate 3000mm wide dry filter spray booths, providing a working floor area of almost 40m2, a working height of 2960mm, and a total filter area of over 20m2. The enclosure is manufactured from 1.2mm thick galvanised folded panels, bolted together and sealed, and product entry and exit is provided by centrally located, selfclosing double hinged doors. A separate personnel access door is located at one end, and double doors at the opposite end allow access to an existing drying room. Clean filtered air is drawn

FP276_Main.indd 63

from the factory by fans located above the enclosure, and lighting is provided by twelve 1500mm long twin fluorescent fittings. Each booth is served by its own 710mm diameter 3kW axial fan, running at 1400rpm and extracting up to 3.37m3 per second. 710mm diameter ducting, routed between roof trusses and out through the roof, allows vertical discharge of filtered air to atmosphere. Inside the enclosure, the spraying area comprises three standard Gallito DFB300 plenums fitted side by side – two 1000mm deep removable partitions allow each 3m-wide area to be used independently or, when the partitions are removed, provide a working width up to nine metres. Ian Ward, commenting on the Ellis installation, says: “To ensure a long, trouble-free working life, Gallito booths are built to the highest standards, using premium grade materials, and all galvanised panels are cut to size on a CNC laser cutter, then folded and formed to give a perfect fit and seal.” “Gallito’s engineers completed the installation and commissioned our new spray facility in a one week window we had earmarked for the work,” says Paul, “and we are delighted with the quality of the whole structure. The installation now allows us to produce short runs economically, to a quality-controlled standard, and we also use the booths to produce accurate sample products for client approval prior to volume production on the automatic spray line.” 01937 844698 gallito.co.uk

Weeke ABD 260 improves productivity for Kingstown Furniture Hull-based Kingstown Furniture, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, recently invested in a Weeke ABD 260 drilling and dowel inserting machine from Homag UK. With a turnover of nearly £30m, Kingstown is the leading UK manufacturer of readyassembled bedroom and lounge furniture for high street and online retailers. The company employs over 360 staff based on an 11 acre site, in the 2017 City of Culture, where it has the capacity to supply over 7000 units per week. All products are made to order by its teams of skilled staff that use the latest in manufacturing technology to provide quality furniture at competitive prices. Richard Sharp, MD of Kingstown Furniture, takes up the story: “The cornerstones of our business are innovation, design, quality and value for money. We always look to invest in machinery that will help us improve not only our products, but also our productivity and profitability. “Recent growth had led to a situation where we there was a potential production bottleneck building in the drilling and dowelling area. All our products have component parts which need to be drilled and dowelled, so it was vitally important that we addressed the situation, earlier rather than later. ” Looking for the right solution “There were a number of options on the market that would do the job. When we carried out our research, however, it became clear that the Weeke ABD 260 was a technically advanced machine at an attractive price that offered the best value for money, hence our decision to purchase one for the business. “The team at Homag were very helpful throughout the sales process. Then, when it came to planning the installation of the Weeke ABD 260 they excelled themselves. We had a very tight schedule and tasked them with installing the machine over a lunch break! “I have to take my hat off to them – the installation went like clockwork, achieving our goal

FP276_Main.indd 64

of a lunch time install. Later that day, our staff were trained on the machine by the installation engineer. “Our machinists find it a very easy piece of kit to operate. It does exactly what we wanted it to do, helping our production unit to further improve its productivity and provide flexibility for the production processes.” Improved service and consistency “Our goal is to be the brand of choice for our customers and part of achieving this is offering a reliable and timely service. Homag UK has similar values and the Weeke ABD 260 has helped us in our continuous search to provide a first class service to our high street

and online customers,” concludes Richard. Fast and efficient, the Weeke ABD 260 can drill, inject glue and insert each dowel in approximately 1.5 seconds. Set-up times between panel changes are negligible too, as the programs can be made parametrically using the woodWOP software. The ABD 260 can drill horizontally and vertically, and can be equipped with a barcode scanner for even more flexibility and speed of operation. Striebig boost to established joinery firm A Striebig Evolution vertical panel saw is delivering improved accuracy together with increased productivity at one of Britain’s oldest joinery businesses. A Seamer & Son was established in Derby in 1875 by John Seamer. The last member of the Seamer family involved in the business, also called John, retired in 2014 and the company is now owned by MD Richard Latham, who started with the firm as an apprentice joiner in 1981. With 141 years of experience and expertise under its belt, Seamer’s highly skilled joiners produce a wide range of hand-crafted bespoke joinery items for domestic and commercial customers nationwide, with a great deal of repeat business. “As we operate at the very top end of our market it’s vitally important that we continue to strive to maintain and improve our product quality, which is why I believe in investing in the best and most up-to-date equipment,” says Richard. When Richard took over the running of the business he set up a management group to look into ways of improving how the products were made, as well as how to boost productivity. The existing sawing capability, which consisted of an elderly flat bed saw that wasn’t all that accurate and needed three men to handle the cutting of large panels, was quickly

MD Richard Latham with the Striebig vertical panel saw

FP276_Main.indd 66

A joiner sizes a panel on the Striebig Evolution at J Seamer & Son identified as being in urgent need of improvement. “I knew from my time in the business and from what contacts in associated companies had told me, that Striebig had a reputation of being the market leader in panel saws, which is why I didn’t bother looking at any other makes,” says Richard. He did some research on Striebig and its UK dealer, TM Machinery, which was asked to come in to talk

about what machines they could offer. He decided to go with an Evolution model as it came with a bed size that could handle all Seamer’s sheet material and he felt it suited exactly what was needed. The Striebig Evolution 5224 he selected, one of nine different sized models in the Evolution series, has a maximum cutting size of 4300 x 2240mm and a maximum depth of cut of 80mm. It features as standard Striebig’s user-friendly ‘touch and saw’ operating system which delivers easy and convenient machine control through a touch screen panel that operates all of the machine’s functions. The Evolution represents the cutting edge in vertical panel saw technology. Technical features that are optional extras in other saws are included as standard. They include a digital measuring system, accurate to 0.1mm, and an adjustable precision display that can be set to an accuracy of 1.0, 0.5 or 0.1mm, according to the thickness of the panels being sized. It has a fully automatic roller locking function, an auxiliary stop section with its own tape measure, three additional auxiliary stops for repeat cuts and small workpiece support, and automatic moving backing support. Striebig’s highly-effective TRK extraction keeps users well ahead of all European legislation, with the panel support system offering

support for the thinnest of panels. The saw is used to size all the sheet material used by Seamer’s joiners, mainly MDF and plywood, including veneered MDF sheets, as well as cutting the occasional piece of timber to length. Richard is extremely satisfied with the benefits the Evolution is delivering. “We now have 100% accuracy all the time, with cut panels no longer out of square,” he comments. “This means we have eliminated scrappage as well as saving on sawing time, which will help to improve our profitability.” Another plus is that the Striebig has reduced manual handling. It could take three men to size a large sheet on the flat bed saw, with two needed to feed the panel onto the bed and a third to pull it through. Now it is usually a one-man job on the Striebig, or occasionally two to handle the biggest panels. “In my book you get what you pay for and I wanted a saw that was reliable, accurate and long lasting,” says Richard. “It was well worth buying the Striebig because of all the added benefits it’s giving us.” TM Machinery’s sales director Matt Pearce concludes: “It’s satisfying to know that by supplying one of the latest Striebig saws to Seamers we are helping this longestablished company move forward and take full advantage of the latest in sawing technology.” 0116 271 7155 tmmachinery.co.uk

Creating a new level of joinery performance with Temac Based in Carmarthenshire, South Wales, Willow Joinery designs and manufactures bespoke joinery tailored to its customers’ needs – the business prides itself on attention to detail, no matter the job size. But how could Willow Joinery react to growing demand without merely extending its lead times and potentially losing grip on its quality threshold? Over the last couple of years, Soukup’s window production machinery has been selected by an increasing number of joinery firms across the UK. As one of the fastest-growing brands in the country, demand for Soukup’s range of solutions for window production is growing strongly – so much so, Soukup has invested in a new manufacturing plant near Prague to help cope with growing demand from the UK. Dan Raymond is a director of Willow Joinery, and he first became aware of Soukup at the W14 exhibition. There he met Jaroslav Soukup, the owner of Soukup Woodworking Machinery and Ian Brown, MD of Soukup’s exclusive UK dealer, IWM. “Although we were very impressed by all the machines

Jaroslav and Ian had on display, we thought such a machine wouldn’t be financially achievable for a small joinery firm,” explains Dan. “In late summer of 2015 with growing demand for our windows and doors, we made the decision to invest in some modern machinery to speed up production. We searched all the well-known firms but couldn’t find a suitable machine for our budget. “After reading that Soukup was releasing a new CNC tenoner – designed with the smaller workshop in mind – we got in touch with Ian who invited us to visit another joinery firm which had recently a Temac machine. After seeing the machine in action, and having a chat with Ian and Jaroslav, we realised that this was the right machine for us.” Willow Joinery, as is typical for a small joinery firm, started out using only a range of classic and traditional equipment to create its windows and assorted joinery work. Of course, there is nothing essentially wrong with that, other than it is inherently time-consuming and it becomes a considerable challenge when a firm’s demand begins to increase. Willow Joinery director Dan Raymond is delighted with the performance of his Temac

A sample of the work carried out by Willow Joinery small joinery workshop wishing to compete effectively and efficiently in today’s highly competitive market. A typical joinery workshop mainly uses manual spindle moulders to produce windows by making single operations. The Temac tenoning machine can, with the guidance from its WinCreator software, move production to a different level altogether. “Before the Temac was installed we used a number of machines to produce our windows. These included a three-head tenoner, a mortise machine and a spindle moulder,” explains Dan. Needless to say, this trio took considerable time to set up and pass the window components through. The company needed to find a solution. “Once the tooling had been selected to suit the windows we wanted to produce, it took six

weeks before the Temac was delivered – and both Jaroslav and Ian promptly made the journey for the installation. After day one, the Temac was up-and-running, ready for training,” says Dan. “The WinCreator software is simple to use as is the Temac. After making a few sample windows we started on our first job list which consisted of eight oak flush casement windows which we completed in a matter of hours, cutting our production time greatly. “I would highly recommend the Temac for any company with growing demand for their products – the service we received from Jaroslav and Ian is second to none and will be the first company we call for future purchases.” iwmachines.co.uk 01869 244943 willow-joinery.com 07944 108747

Save or make money from waste wood A joinery company in Tunbridge Wells has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on its operating costs.

Wood waste heater at Phase One Joinery Phase One Joinery has been established for 29 years, and provides a bespoke joinery service manufacturing items such as doors, windows, staircases, cupboards and furniture as well as architectural joinery projects such as decking, conservatories and fireplaces. Based on a farm, with limited options for heating, the business had been used to spending about £1500 a year on oil for its warm air heating system – but when the company moved to a larger workshop on the same location, the team found itself without any heating source at all, so had to start looking for new solutions. MD of Phase One Joinery, Nigel Foster, was aware of biomass technology, and decided to review wood waste heaters to see if he could find a suitable heating solution for his new workshop that would also help the business save money on waste disposal costs. The owner of another joinery company recommended he speak with Kurt Cockroft at Wood Waste Technology. Nigel was impressed with the range of heaters manufactured by Wood Waste Technology at its headquarters in Staffordshire – and especially liked the ability to add a summer heat dump to allow waste

FP276_Main.indd 68

wood to continue to be burnt throughout the hotter months, by sending the heat direct to the atmosphere. After a quote and site survey, Phase One Joinery ordered a WT10 heater to provide much needed heating for the workshop in winter, but also to provide free disposal of the large amount of waste wood generated by the manufacturing process. The WT10 was installed at Phase One Joinery’s new 5000ft2 unit by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers, who even managed to utilise some existing trunking to vent the heat around the workshop area and mezzanine floor. Having previously invested in a briquetting machine, Phase One Joinery also has the ability to recycle some of its wood waste into briquettes, which, depending on the time of year, can be sold or used in the wood waste heater. Nigel says: “The team at Wood Waste Technology helped us tremendously, and we’ve definitely made the right decision for our business by buying the WT10 – it’s marvellous. Our waste disposal bills have reduced tremendously, saving us over £2000 a year, plus we no longer have the £1500 annual cost that we were previously spending on heating. In

addition, we can now use any unsold briquettes ourselves, as they burn really well in the wood waste heater!” MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft, says: “It’s great that the team at Phase One Joinery can decide whether to burn or briquette the waste wood – as it means they either make money or save money from their wood waste, instead of paying to have it taken away.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small, hand-fired units to larger fully-automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters, and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau, a German manufacturer of dependable, precisionengineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems – a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. 72 PRODUCTS

Enhanced door production and processing

Furniture handles from Redocol Ostermann’s own brand Redocol has been enjoying tremendous popularity since 2009. The brand now encompasses over 80 products – mainly consumables and workshop supplies. The range is now being augmented with top-quality conventional furniture handles, knobs and coat hooks. Typical of the own-brand philosophy, the focus is on an outstanding balance between price and performance. Every product marketed under the Redocol name satisfies the highest standards of quality demanded for professional applications. After all, these own-brand products are closely associated with the Ostermann name. The Redocol range only contains products that satisfy Ostermann’s requirements. Six popular handle models from which to choose Whether it be a bow-type handle, mitred handle, segmented bow handle or rod handle - the new Redocol furniture handle range features all the classics with different hole spacings and in various lengths and finishes. There is the bow handle,

Qwood composite timber profiles can be integrated into doors to add aesthetic quality and enhance performance. The profiles can be used to secure the glazing in place whilst enabling an enhanced finish. Qwood’s composite beads, bars and moulds are replacing the use of traditional timber components to provide an improved solution that reduces labour, waste and ongoing maintenance requirements. Qwood offers the industry a product that improves and enhances the flow of product through the joinery process. Consistently straight Qwood can be used with traditional joinery tools – its unique properties improve production, with no knots or imperfections. Just like timber, Qwood can be cut, mitred, or lap jointed, nailed and pinned, and glued and taped. Qwood reduces processing,

and has a significant effect on production times, storage, sorting and waste. The consistency of Qwood means waste can be drastically reduced, as Qwood will not bow, splinter, swell, crack or rot. Therefore, only off-cuts will be left over. Qwood can also be supplied in a length that best suits production, subject to quantities, thus helping to further reduce waste. The Qwood door mould is straight every time, and with no knots or gaps to fill, it makes for an improved timber door. The new universal Qwood bolection decorative profile finish for doors is available in stock lengths to suit customer requirements (minimum quantities required), enabling an ease of working into panels by the manufacturer or fabricator. segmented bow handle and the handle bar handle available in a brushed stainless steel and plain steel finish. The mitred handles, square and round, are available in a brushed stainless steel finish. The attractive range is rounded off with a designer rod handle featuring a brushed stainless steel finish. For your display – a sample handle board To help the end user choose the appropriate furniture handles, there is a Redocol sample board available showing all of the handles. It contains a variant of each handle design, with each length and surface. This is an ideal sales and presentation device for every showroom. And there’s more – coat hooks and furniture knobs The furniture manufacturer and carpenter can also look to three different coat hook designs and two furniture knobs styles to deliver an especially attractive feature to customised furniture-making. Customers can find the entire Redocol handle collection in the Ostermann online shop. ostermann.eu
