Comment And the surveys said ... Occasionally in this industry, there are slow news days, even weeks, where relatively little happens that is actually newsworthy and the pickings are slim and somewhat predictable. But as with buses, industry reports and surveys, hard news and insight tends to arrive in clusters. Over the last eight weeks or so an extraordinary range of reports, surveys and news items have crossed my desk – some of them useful, informative and insightful to some degree, some not. In this issue, we cover a lot of ground with reports, surveys and insight in a range of topics – from the imprisonment of cigarette smugglers to the international wood panel market and from warnings of a looming industry skills crisis to our changing bedtime habits – this issue, perhaps more than any other, has something for everyone. The Sleep Council has published its latest Great British Bedtime Report which says we are buying bigger beds, we are spending more time sleeping apart from our partner/spouse and that more and more people are turning to alcohol, medication, music and meditation in a quest to get a good night’s sleep. One of the questions this poses is how do these shifting dynamics inform how designers and manufacturers hone exisiting products and develop new options? We’d love to hear ideas and possible solutions ... In a report for its members, the BFM warns of an impending skills crisis across the industry as a result of Brexit. It says that UK furniture manufacturers will
face serious resource problems if restrictions are placed on the movement of labour to the UK from other EU countries as a result of Brexit. In what appears to be a really positive sector of the industry, the British Woodworking Federation’s Joinery State of Trade Survey looks into the state of the joinery industry, examining the impending business rate changes and how increasing joinery sales are being balanced out by inflationary pressures. Elsewhere in the issue, we hear about HMRC’s successful prosecution of a cigarette smuggling gang which used tabletop panels to hide contraband and there’s also news of successful advanced tests for a revolutionary process for extracting useful resources from MDF waste.

Survey says order books at two-year high, but prices expected to rise further
The Furniture Makers’ Company launches new Apprentice Award
Demand for UK-manufactured goods strengthened in the three months to February, with total order books improving further, according to the latest CBI Industrial Trends Survey. The survey of 461 firms found that total orders reached a twoyear high, with the strengthening in demand led by the mechanical engineering and metal products sectors. Export orders remained stable, and above the long-run average. Output growth remained robust in the three months to February and is expected to increase at a faster pace over the coming quarter, with expectations at their highest since September 2013. Firms expect prices to rise strongly over the next three months, with expectations at their firmest since April 2011, as sterling’s depreciation continues to increase the cost of raw materials. Rain Newton-Smith, CBI chief
The Furniture Makers’ Company, the furnishing industry’s charity, is calling for entries for a new award that will recognise the efforts and career progression of apprentices working in the furnishing industry. Companies are invited to nominate apprentices working within their business who have made exceptional progress and demonstrated a commitment to pursuing a career in the furnishing industry. The judges of the new award will be Tony Smart, Master of The Furniture Makers’ Company 2017-2018; Paul von der Heyde, chairman of the Manufacturing Guild Mark; Karen Clarridge, HR manager at Whitemeadow; Julie Dix, training and development manager at Silentnight Brands; and Caroline Gascoigne, learning and development manager at DFS. The deadline for applications is 19th May. Apprentices that are shortlisted will be invited, with a

economist, says: “Stronger demand and production is good news for UK manufacturers, though the weaker pound continues to push up input costs and this is now feeding through to output price inflation expectations. “With cost pressures building, businesses will be looking to the Budget for relief from business rates, specifically bringing forward the adjustment from RPI to CPI. “Over the longer term, investment in education and innovation as part of the Government’s industrial strategy will really need to deliver in the face of increasing political headwinds.”

Local MP helps Mereway celebrate £30,000 charity campaign
Mereway Group enlisted the support of local Labour MP Jess Phillips (centre) to celebrate the completion of its £30,000 charity campaign
Leading kitchen, bathroom and bedroom manufacturer the Mereway Group enlisted the support of local Labour MP Jess Phillips to celebrate the completion of its £30,000 charity campaign, when she attended the cheque presentation in January. Staff at the Tyseley-based office and factory raised £32,852.39, beating their £30,000 target from a series of charity events throughout the year. The company pledged to raise the money in celebration of 30 successful years in business in 2016. They supported four main charities that received the bulk of the funds raised, with another list of local charities selected by staff receiving smaller donations. A range of events was undertaken during the year that saw staff and supporters cycling, running, walking, baking, playing golf, hosting dinners and even
skydiving throughout the UK. Jess made the cheque presentation to representatives from the four main charities, Acorns, The Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity, Help for Heroes and Help Harry Help Others at a celebration lunch held at the Tyseley premises. “It is a pleasure to see a successful local business giving something back,” says Jess. “It’s amazing what can be achieved when people pull together. I’m very proud to be Mereway’s MP and thank them for their efforts.” Mereway joint MD Bob Norris says: “We are delighted that Jess could join us to mark the end of our charity campaign. It has been an amazing year with so many fantastic achievements by staff, suppliers and industry colleagues. We are grateful to all those that have supported us, giving up their time or their money to help us achieve our target.”
MP visits Coventry packaging business Kita Packaging Geoffrey Robinson, MP, and Craig Humphrey, Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership GrowthHub managing director, recently visited local employee-owned Kite Packaging. The visitors spent the morning with Kite Packaging managing partner Gavin Ashe touring the site, meeting employees and getting an overview of the business. They were notably impressed by the company’s set-up and the success of Kite Packaging. Kite Packaging was founded in 2001 as a true employee-owned business and has worked by the motto, ‘Customer satisfaction matters so much more when you own the business’. In 2016 Kite was named by the London Stock Exchange as, ‘one of the top 1000 companies to inspire Britain’ in its annual report. Throughout Kite’s 15 year history, the group has seen
significant growth and has a strong regional branch network across the UK, in the Midlands, Rotherham, Swindon, Letchworth, Sittingbourne and Portsmouth, as well as an environmental compliance business and leading e-commerce website. Mr Robinson and Mr Humphrey were very interested to learn the story behind Kite Packaging and how it had grown to become one of the UK’s leading packaging suppliers. The employee ownership philosophy was something that caught their attention and after having a tour of the building and warehouse operation; they were full of praise. Kite Packaging has always had a base in Coventry and has more than doubled its property footprint. 2016 was another year of significant growth and Kite Packaging garnered numerous industry awards. kitepackaging.co.uk

Chemistry team at SATRA sets record Building on the growth of previous years, the chemistry team at SATRA had its highestever revenue in 2016 with turnover almost doubled over the past five years. The Chemical and Analytical Technology group carries out all of SATRA’s chemical analysis to support the many product sectors that SATRA serves, including footwear, furniture, toys and personal protective equipment. A sizeable portion of the chemistry team’s business is testing in accordance with restricted substances legislation. Within Europe, this is mainly driven
by REACH (Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006) and the innocuousness requirements for PPE as part of the certification requirements through SATRA’s Notified Body activities. SATRA is also accredited to the US CPSIA (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act 2008). SATRA can test to the requirements in EN ISO 374-1:2016 so gloves can be certified against this newly-published standard. This involves a new requirement to test the degradation of gloves in accordance with EN 374-4:2013 and permeation testing to EN 16523-1:2015. satra.co.uk

Last month, Furniture Production joined journalists from 28 countries in Hanover, at a press preview of the world’s biggest woodworking machinery exhibition …
The new face of Ligna The world’s biggest woodworking machinery fair nears. With organisers Deutsche Messe and the German Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers’ Association (VDMA) predicting favourable economic conditions, this year’s Ligna – taking place from 22nd26th May at the vast Hanover showgrounds in Germany – is primed for success. Set to feature more than 1500 exhibitors from 45 countries, Ligna is a truly international platform. While roughly half of the expected (net) 122,000m2 exhibition space will be occupied by German suppliers, Italians account for a further 25%, and Austrians for 10% – while exhibitors from Turkey, Denmark, Sweden, China, The

Netherlands and Switzerland comprise the bulk of the remainder. Ligna’s appeal is undeniably international, too. The last edition, in 2015, attracted some 93,000 visitors – and the organisers are expecting trade visitors from around 90 nations to this year’s, which, bolstered by a stronger thematic layout (see boxout), promises even greater opportunities to find and conduct business. The five-day presentation will take place across 10 halls of Hanover’s Deutsche Messe, plus its open-air site. From mass-production technology and wood-based panel production solutions, to new areas covering surface technology, machine components and automation, the product spread
is comprehensive, and easier to navigate than ever, promising visitors the chance to specify more successfully solutions in today’s ‘Industry 4.0’ world. “The new approach and, more importantly, the new physical layout, have been extremely well received,” commented Dr Andreas Gruchow, the Deutsche Messe managing board member responsible for Ligna, at the outset of the preview’s press conference. “This year, the exhibitors are presenting a wide array of innovations for intelligent, networked manufacturing systems, not to mention new ideas and strategies for the many value creation networks at play in the wood processing and woodworking industries.” Alongside these exhibitors will be numerous special features designed to engage, educate and challenge visitors. These include an array of displays themed around Integrated Manufacturing, a Processing of Plastics and Composites review, a series of training courses, and the Wood Industry Summit, which will present solutions for timber harvesting and primary processing, and advanced technologies for integrating the processing steps involved. There is also the RFID Factory activity zone, which aims to demonstrate the implementation of digital integration in the wood and furniture industries. The conference was opened by Ligna spokesperson Anja Brokjans, who welcomed the many journalists and exhibitor representatives in attendance. She posed the question: “What does the factory of the future look like?” She then went on to summarise the wealth of technological advances visitors will encounter, and how the potential for greater efficiency is increasing year by year. The preview then saw Andreas take to the stage to outline Ligna’s unique strengths. “None of the other shows that take place here are as prominent in their industry as Ligna,” he stated. Andreas expressed his gratitude to the sector’s leaders for their help in facilitating the new layout – the industry’s giants are distributed evenly across the show.

“Bolstered by a stronger thematic layout, this year’s Ligna promises even greater opportunities to find and conduct business” Andreas then explained how the demand for lot-size-one solutions, greater price-toperformance ratios and intelligent systems will be addressed by Ligna’s exhibitors. Next, Wolfgang Pöschl, president of the VDMA’s Woodworking Machinery Association and CEO of machinery manufacturer Michael Weinig, revealed a positive outlook for the German woodworking industry, calling it “a good prerequisite for Ligna”. He noted that one of the key drivers of growth in the sector is digitalisation, which is enabling businesses of all sizes to meet demand for flexibility and individualisation in terms of a product’s dimension and design. Finally, Giulio Masotti, CEO of design project

solution Wood-Skin and Mammafotogramma Studio, presented a treatise on the innovations that inspire his work, and promised the potential to depart from the traditional forms and shapes of mass-market furniture. The journalists then took to the exhibition floor to meet representatives from around 30 of the fair’s exhibitors, including software providers 2020 Technologies and imos, machinery specialists Biesse, SCM, HOMAG, Felder, Weima and Michael Weining, and tooling expert Leitz. Many took advantage of the opportunity to reveal their latest developments. Biesse, for example, promises over 40 solutions, targeting manufacturers large and small, as well as solutions for the wood construction sector,

advanced materials, and improved customer care through Biesse Services. In collaboration with Accenture and Microsoft, the company will also present a cloud-linked Rover machining centre. Software specialist imos – which works through in3D Software in the UK – presented its new joined-up design, manufacture, costing and PoS package, which culminates in Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) applications that promise to put a virtual furniture design into customers’ homes. Although modular in nature, the software’s clear presentation and intuitive controls make it an exciting prospect for manufacturers and retailers alike. Soon after opening its new branch office in Berlin-Velten in late March, the Felder Group will present several new machines at Ligna, including a five-axis CNC machining centre, an edgebander and panel saws, plus its newest brushing machine, multi-borer, compact beam saw, materials handling system and more. In all, the press preview reaffirmed Ligna’s vision and comprehensive offer – it is, indeed, the woodworking industry’s essential international fixture, and it has been working hard to refine its upcoming edition. “The business climate in the wood industry is positive, offering a wealth of market opportunities,” concludes Andreas. “Ligna captures those opportunities perfectly.” W ligna.de

Six members of an organised crime network, which smuggled almost three million illicit cigarettes into the UK hidden in hollowed-out table tops, have been sentenced for their role in evading more than £657,000 in taxes. Four of the men were jailed for a total of 10 years and two months.
Tabletop tobacco crime gang sentenced Dominik Mrzyglod, 37, the ringleader, and William Jurado, 68, were arrested by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) investigators as they observed the men loading cigarettes into a white van at a rented industrial unit in Quarryside Business Park, Redhill, Surrey in June 2014. Officers seized more than one million Jin Ling and Blue Fest cigarettes, worth in excess of £240,000 in unpaid excise duty, plus 81 pouches of counterfeit Golden Virginia hand-rolling tobacco. The cigarettes, which had been smuggled by lorry from Poland hidden inside hollowed-out table tops, were seized from the storage facility and from the van.
Friad Mahmoud, 45, was arrested in Enfield, London in November 2014. He was identified as the person who had rented the van the men were loading in Surrey. In April 2015 Marek Czwartkiewicz, 38, Michal Koc, 37, Ismail Mohamoud, 34, and Dominik Mrzyglod were arrested by HMRC officers after a second operation. Investigations revealed that between January and April 2015 at least 1.74 million cigarettes were smuggled into the UK by lorry, and offloaded at a rented storage unit at New Road Industrial Estate, Sheerness, Kent. In March 2015 Ismail Mohamoud was stopped by Metropolitan Police officers in London. 512,800 Viceroy and Brendal cigarettes,
worth more than £123,000 in excise duty, were found in the back of the silver van he was driving. In April 2015 HMRC investigators seized in excess of 1.2 million Jin Ling and other branded cigarettes at the Sheerness storage unit. Again the cigarettes had been smuggled inside table tops. More than £292,000 in duty was evaded. David Margree, assistant director, fraud investigation service, HMRC, says: “This was a brazen and well-planned criminal operation aiming to flood the UK with illegal cigarettes smuggled inside table tops, which would have ripped off taxpayers and honest retailers. The gang members thought this scam would avoid detection, but we exposed their crimes and they are now paying the price. “HMRC continues to work with other enforcement agencies to reduce the availability of illicit tobacco, which costs the UK around £2.4 billion a year, steals from communities and harms the livelihood of legitimate retailers. We encourage anyone with information regarding the smuggling, storage

or sale of illegal tobacco to contact our 24-hour hotline on 0800 59 5000.” Friad Mahmoud, William Jurado, Michal Koc and Ismail Mohamoud were found guilty at Blackfrairs Crown Court in December last year, after a three-week trial. Dominik Mrzyglod, the controller on the fraud, pleaded guilty to his crimes. Marek Czwartkiewicz pleaded guilty to his involvement in the Sheerness operation. A seventh man was acquitted. Upon sentencing the men, His Honour Judge Peter Clarke QC, said: “It was abundantly clear that this was a sophisticated international scheme, which by nature must have evaded millions of pounds in duty.” Four of the men were jailed for a total of 10 years and two months at Blackfriars Crown Court in January. Two others received suspended prison sentences. Investigators estimate around 120,000 cigarettes were smuggled inside each table top. All images courtesy of HMRC

Velvet Colours – four new solid shades of HI-MACS from LG Hausys The new colours belonging to the Solid range, take inspiration from the beauty of the natural world including rich organic pigments and tactile materials such as leather and raw clay. Mink, Evergreen, Cosmic Blue and Suede join to create atmospheric finishes for the highest quality solid surface material. The Velvet Colours will add a balanced and authentic sophistication to any environment. Evergreen is a classic tone inspired by a need to revert to nature and to connect with our surroundings. This colour rests between warm and cool within an environment bringing the outside in and creating an atmosphere of calm. This crafted and organic green can work alongside natural wood furniture and textiles within cosmopolitan spaces. With a dark undertone, Cosmic Blue has structure and holds a certain power that demands to be noticed. Taking influence from
textiles of the fashion industry and in particular denim, Cosmic Blue is the perfect alternative to a monotone colour scheme and this tone imbues richness wherever it is used. Couple with deep wood or metal-framed furniture, or alongside copper or bronze accents for the ultimate finish to any space. Mink is a warm and comforting tone, a silky luxury that can offer a premium velvet finish to any project. Add a dynamic element to an ordinary interior with this subtle grey. This solid surface works effortlessly with other neutrals bringing positive warmth to otherwise all-white interiors. The chic finish of Mink offers an inviting softness and has a wholesome appeal that is perfect for sophisticated spaces, especially where mixed with organic wood or ceramic. Channelling minimalism in its purest sense Suede offers the industry a new neutral that strips back a space revealing only what is

Makita extends increasingly popular 10.8V CXT power tool range The Makita 10.8V CXT tool range is growing in popularity, driven by the very compact size and low weight advantages combined with outstanding performance and durability. For example, the new Makita TD111D impact driver with brushless motor delivers an outstanding 135Nm of tightening torque yet weighs just 1.1kg with an overall length of only 135mm from chuck to back of body. With such performance, the 10.8v CXT range is proving attractive to all property installation professionals. More new products in the CXT range include a stapler, an additional vacuum cleaner and two battery-heated cold-weather coats. The new Makita TD111D impact driver with brushless motor and CXT slide battery will deliver up to 3900 impacts per minute in high mode with capacity to drive home an M14 bolt. This compact 1.1kg machine features the latest A-mode impact operation, which drives the fixture slowly to begin with until the thread tightening reacts when the full power is switched on to drive the fastening home. This mode eliminates screw cam-out and cross threading which causes the fixing to fail. In addition, the TD111D has a variable speed trigger, electric brake, soft grip handle and LED job light. The TD111D is available with charger and two 2.0Ah batteries in a Makpac connector case, or as a body-only machine for those operators with sufficient 10.8V batteries. The new Makita ST113DZ CXT stapler will carry
150 staples 10mm wide of either 7mm or 10mm length. This compact and lightweight stapler can be used in either sequential trigger mode or as a bump fire machine where the striker must hit the material for the staple to be ejected. The anti-dry-fire feature means that if no staples are in the machine it will not fire which indicates to the operator that the stapling action has not taken place. The magazine is plastic to reduce weight and there is a window enabling a visual check on the number of staples remaining in the magazine as well as a trigger lock, LED job light and belt
hook. It is only available as body only. The new CL106FD 10.8V CXT vacuum cleaner has been added to the range which has a maximum sealed suction of 3.1kPa and maximum air flow of 1.3m³/min. This vac has the capsule type dust holder, overcoming the need for dust bags, and is emptied directly into the waste bin. Fitted with a 4.0Ah battery this vacuum will run constantly for 42 minutes, ample run time for clearing up after a domestic installation or repair job, and comes complete with trigger switch and LED job light. The cold weather will be present for another couple of months yet, so a welcome introduction is the heated clothing in this range. The new Makita CJ102D heated jacket, with two-way zipper, is available in four sizes from medium to XXL, and has three heat zones across the chest and back, and three heat settings which are indicated with three LEDs on the left chest pocket of the coat. The lightweight Li-Ion battery is carried in a back pocket and the battery holder is removable allowing hand washing of the coat. A USB port on the battery holder enables charging of mobile devices, phones and MP3 players, and the sleeves can be unzipped on warmer days. The new Makita CV101DZ is the vest version of the heated jacket with just two heat zones but identical performance. Both garments have three pockets and run times of 4, 7.5 and 14 hours on the high, medium or low temperature settings. makitauk.com

Jonathan Rose Fine Furniture was founded in 1997 to provide a professional furniture-making and engineering service to designers and private clients. To improve its accuracy and repeatability, the Wiltshire-based business turned to CNC expert Biesse to provide a solution.
Biesse machines benefit Jonathan Rose Fine Furniture The company’s determination to maintain quality craftsmanship has never wavered and its highly skilled team of craftsmen is dedicated to the efficient manufacture of individual pieces of furniture. Jonathan Rose needed the facility of a multi-faceted CNC machine to provide the accuracy and repeatability required for its high-end furniture production. The company had no CNC capabilities prior to purchasing Biesse machines: a Rover A 1632 five-axis CNC machining centre and a Klever 1530 G FT flat table CNC machining centre. “We decided to purchase two machines as they provide diverse capabilities,” explains Jonathan. “The Klever flat table machine produces items more quickly and with better accuracy. The value for money this machine provides made our decision very easy.” The investment in a new manufacturing facility is indeed impressive, with a new air-conditioned CNC workshop, which houses both machines and provides an excellent working environment for operators Tom and Sarah.
F&JP_281.indd 18
“The Rover A five-axis is a game changer in terms of capability,” Jonathan enthuses. “It has enabled us to win more business as we can now manufacture furniture we weren’t able to before.” Jonathan Rose is very innovative when it comes to translating the designs of its customers into tangible objects and its use of Biesse’s software, bSolid together with the Rover A’s capabilities and operator skills, produces stunning pieces of furniture which previously, could only be hand carved. “The machines have enabled us to produce more intricate and complex designs but one of
the other exciting benefits is the human factor. There is greater opportunity for our workforce with a tremendous feeling of progression.” “Biesse’s Total Care five-year warranty and service plan was a massive contributing factor in our decision-making process. It’s a one-stopshop as far as we were concerned. Biesse go the whole nine yards and take responsibility for the complete delivery and installation service. Once we’d placed the order the rest was easy. Biesse conducted a site survey, offloaded, sited, installed and commissioned the machines.” biesse.com

Lincoln-based Elite Timber Homes is a manufacturer of engineered timber frame structures for homes, offices, student accommodation, home extensions, holiday modules and self-build projects. Following a visit to the Daltons Wadkin Wood and Panel Open House exhibition, operations manager Steve Hughes and company director Fraser Hughes were able to see both the Salvador SuperPush 200 and SuperAngle 600 models in operation.
Elite Timber Homes upgrades to Salvador crosscut
Timber frame production on the Salvador SuperAngle 600 Crosscut
They were immediately impressed by the SuperAngle. With a cutting angle range of -70° to +70° it is the ideal solution for roof cassette systems. As part of an expansion move into custombuilt premises, Elite Timber Homes identified the need to upgrade its ageing crosscut saw. While the old saw was automatic, Steve wanted to take advantage of new advances in crosscutting technology. One of the key benefits of the Savlador SuperPush and SuperAngle ranges is the ability to program cutting lists offline, away from the machine itself. Using a simple Excel-based spreadsheet, multiple cutting lists, including information on lengths, angles, quantities, qualities, priorities, waste percentage and labelling data, can all be compiled from the office. This means that operators do not need to waste valuable production time inputting cutting lists at the machine. They simply open up the file, load the material and press start. Elite Timber Homes has over 40 years’ experience within the timber frame industry. Steve comments: “We have worked hard to build the company’s reputation, supplying high-quality products. We needed a machine that could give
F&JP_281.indd 20
us the accuracy, quality, reliability and production flexibility our customers have come to expect.” Daltons Wadkin director, Alex Dalton, is quick to champion the technical attributes of the Salvador software. “What continually sets the Salvador crosscut saws apart from the competition is the powerful and intuitive PC-based software,” he says. “The capability for offline programming is not an optional extra – it comes as standard with the SuperPush and SuperAngle machines, along with full optimising and defecting facility.” Steve continues: “The design software we use automatically generates the cutting lists for our timber frames. Before, these had to be manually inputted directly into the machine itself. Now, we simply copy and paste the information into the Savlador’s office-based spreadsheet and click save. It has made the whole process quicker, and crucially more accurate, without the possibility for human error.” Alex adds: “Whether it’s a straight- or angle-cutting machine, each Salvador can be customised to suit the customer’s requirements. The infeed length, pusher speed, clamping arrangement and outfeed sorting can all be specified to suit the product and production volume required.”
Salvador crosscuts can be seen operating across a wide range of sectors including timber frame manufacture, saw mill processing, furniture production, stair parts, garden products, pallet and case manufacturers, and more. With over forty years’ experience of both the window and joinery trades, Damian Balfry and Greg Carey continued to form Derg Joinery in 2015. Their high level of expertise and knowledge they brought to the company has led to Derg Joinery becoming the leading manufacturer of timber window frames, casings, doors and screens in Ireland.
Derg Joinery leaps ahead of competition with new Homag Venture BMG 311 With its continuous drive to produce high quality bespoke joinery products and its desire to remain competitive, the company looked to purchase an advanced CNC router. Damian Balfry, managing director of Derg Joinery explains: “We were looking to automate our processes to increase production efficiency. It was essential to us that our bespoke products would still be produced to the same high standards and with the level of accuracy that have become the bedrock for the business.” Homag UK – highly recommended within the industry “We initially evaluated the three market leaders, including Homag. We already knew of its strong reputation for first class machinery and reliability within the woodworking industry. However, it was the recommendation from another company in the trade, who we work with and trust, that really convinced us. Having an endorsement from someone who has had considerable experience with Homag really made the difference. “Once we had spoken to Homag UK, it was clear that a Homag Venture BMG 311 CNC router would be the best fit for us. I had worked with CNC routers in previous roles but I had never seen or used a Homag CNC myself. “Homag UK invited us to the UK to visit two companies who were operating Homag Venture five-axis CNC routers at their facilities. We visited both Mumford & Wood in London and Arden Windows in Coventry. Being able to see the machines and witness their capabilities in action really impressed us. “Seeing how satisfied the two companies were, and speaking with them about their experiences, really sold Homag to us. After the visits, we made the decision to purchase a Homag Venture BMG 311 CNC.”
The Homag Venture BMG 311 CNC – advanced machining at high speeds “After much discussion with Homag UK, we chose a 6175 x 1550m worktable for our Homag Venture BMG 311. This format would ensure we were able to produce both windows and large doors with as little manual labour as possible. Its LED pod and rail positioning system allows for highly visible, quick and reliable set-ups, ensuring that production speed is not compromised between projects. “The main selling points of the Homag machine were the 15kw five-axis router which is programmable from 0-24,000rpm, and the gantry system. This has a strong reputation in the industry for its ability to speed up production and increase accuracy – a vitally important factor for us. “The BMG’s tool changer has 27 tool places with a 13-position drill block for both vertical and horizontal drilling. This means we are able to save time between jobs, as we don’t need to manually change the tools for different tasks. “The CNC has heavy duty pneumatic power clamps for solid wood production which is especially important when producing windows. The power clamps can hold multiple window components at once which again speeds up production. The suction cups allow the machine to hold and process large and heavy doors. This not only reduces the amount of labour needed, but also minimises possible damage to the panels. “When choosing which operating software to use, we had the option of using external companies. However, we felt that Homag’s own woodWOP software was the best fit with its simplicity and ease of use. Coupled with woodMotion, the software is able to simulate the program before machining to check for accuracy, as well as provide collision control. “This protects the machine from any crashes

Pneumatic power clamps provide flexibility for solid wood processing
during production. Additionally, it includes woodScout which is an on-board intelligent software system, allowing the BMG 311 to selfdiagnose any system errors and faults for fast rectification.” New opportunities as Ireland’s leading joinery company “As Homag stipulated, it only took a few days for the machine to be installed and we completed our training at Homag UK. Naturally, there were some teething issues getting to grips with the machine and starting to produce windows. “It was a steep learning curve, especially as we had never used a CNC router as advanced as the BMG 311 before. Those issues, however, were quickly put behind us and now we could not be without this impressive CNC machine. The benefits are already greater than we expected and we have not yet exploited its full capabilities. “Not only has the machine immensely improved efficiency and accuracy for us, but it has also streamlined the production flow by replacing the work of 12 machines. It really is a one-stop shop and now the only manual labour needed is for gluing and painting. This has meant we were able to upskill three existing members of staff for other roles within the company. “The Venture BMG 311 has opened up new and exciting opportunities for us with both the trade and general public. It has given us exclusivity by becoming one of few companies in Ireland with the capabilities of a five-axis CNC machine. We can take on advanced projects which we would never have been considered for previously. The machine has more than met our expectations and has given us a real advantage within the market,” concludes Damian Balfry. Combilift multi-directional forklifts are a popular choice in the timber sector for enabling the safe and space saving handling and storage of long and bulky loads such as packs of timber, roof trusses, sheet materials, mouldings and so forth.
S
Combilift is a good machine for Scott+Sargeant
At Scott+Sargeant’s base in Horsham, West Sussex, a C4000 Combilift is prized for its ability to offer very stable handling of machinery which comes in all shapes and dimensions, often with an offset centre of gravity. Woodworking machinery and spare parts expert Scott+Sargeant’s stock comprises new and used machines, tooling, spares and parts and hand tools and the company is also an official dealership for the German-made Martin range of machinery. The LPG-powered 4t capacity Combilift that it acquired from Andover Forktruck Services earlier this year solved a number of issues in one: the need for better and rationalised storage in one part of the premises and the requirement for secure handling of irregular-sized machines such as dust extractors, power saws and edgebanders. “Space is understandably costly in his part of the country,” says director Paul Charnaud, “and we saw an opportunity to make much better use of a previously underutilised area if we could find the right combination of handling and storage. We had seen a Combilift working in a plastics factory across the road and due to the nature of the products we handle we realised
F&JP_281.indd 24
that this would work for us.” By installing racking that was configured according to the dimensions and working aisle-widths of the Combilift, 4000ft² has been freed up where incoming new machinery is now stored prior to despatch. The truck’s ability to work in tight confines avoided the need for large areas to be set aside for manoevring, allowing maximum use of space. Paul Charnaud also adds that the racking has enabled much more organised – and therefore quicker – stock location as it was often necessary to remove a number of items before accessing the one in question. Protecting stock from damage was a further consideration and even the most irregular loads can be securely moved around: resting them on the Combilift’s platform offers a much more stable base than balancing on forks. Paul sums up: “Compared to our counterbalance forklift which had very limited mobility, the Combilift has been very beneficial. Investment costs will be quickly recouped as we have reclaimed the idle space which was badly needed due to our ongoing growth.” combilift.com scosarg.com

From smooth, velvet matt finishes to desirable, high levels of reflection, Egger’s PerfectSense range provides a particularly hard-wearing surface with an up-market look and feel, but at a very realistic cost. With the launch of Egger’s new Decorative Collection 2017-2019, the range has expanded with 23 matt and gloss boards. Dean Carroll, procurement manager at Lawcris says: “Egger has really listened to the furniture manufacturing sector and added more decors so there are now 10 matching matt and gloss surfaces, plus three more décors in the gloss range, which are extremely popular. “High-gloss finishes with contrasting matching matt textures are very current at the moment and due to the quality of these boards, Egger’s PerfectSense seems to be the range that everyone wants to work with. The icing on the cake … the anti-fingerprint finish that the PerfectSense Matt boards have associated with them, making them ideal for many spaces in the home.” Thanks to the revolutionary UV coating process, the luxurious gloss board offers a combination of a real mirror finish with a tough, smooth and flawless surface, whilst the matt board has unique properties of its own. The warm, silky matt look gives a high value feel and is popular in premium-end furniture production. The superior quality differentiates it from the other matt furniture surfaces – particularly when used as a contrast to the sheer depth and shine of the gloss boards. PerfectSense lacquered boards are part of Egger’s Decorative Collection which can be found on the Lawcris website, an excellent resource tool for furniture manufacturers. High gloss specialist Barberán, an expert in the development of finishing technology for furniture, doors, windows and panels, offers a High Gloss HotCoating laquering system with a mirror gloss that promises superb depth and clarity.
Barberán promises a fine finish This process entails the direct application of Kleiberit’s HotCoating to the melamine surface, acting as a primer and base coat at the same time. This feature eliminates the need to include primer application machines, and saves production costs by enabling a shorter coating line. The perfect match – high gloss and Jetmaster digital printers Kleiberit’s High Gloss HotCoating lines can also be combined with JetMaster’s digital printing technology. The manufacturer can produce customised decoration or woodgrain surfaces on the spot, eliminating the need for storing models for immediate delivery. This is also a highly-efficient solution when it comes to delivering numerous different designs or small quantities without having to increase production costs. Laminating lines for high gloss From flat lamination and 2D, to postforming and panel indexing, with options for every kind of material and glue, for high production levels in continuous processes or small productions, Barberán tests different types of material so can offer the most precise machines to work in any condition. Its Compact Line HG laminator was designed for gluing transparent or high gloss foil to surfaces made of melamine. The machine applies and smooths a low-grammage glue coat before overlaying and pressing the foil. This process achieves an extremely regular, clean surface finish. Post-forming high gloss Barberán offers lines suitable for the application of high gloss or matt decorative foils onto the top side of panels made of particleboard or MDF and the postforming of one or both sides. The panels can be of different shapes, at a maximum width of 950mm. The machine uses PUR hotmelt glue, and the speed can be adjusted from five25m/min. barberan.com

The increasing demand for coatings that are certified and tested to recognised fire standards has ensured that Hesse Lignal developed its PU Multicoat lacquer to meet this requirement …
Hesse’s flame-retardant coating goes the distance
Hesse offers coating solutions for numerous interior applications – including those within seagoing vessels
The DE 4259x (gloss level) is a twocomponent PU lacquer with an acrylic resin base that boasts a three-day pot life. This multicoat lacquer meets the EC-type examination certificate IMO-certification, flame-retardant coating agent for seagoing vessels, which puts it at the forefront of marine coatings. In addition, the DE 4259x (gloss level) series was tested for flame retardancy by the CSTB testing institute, and meets the French M1 classification as well as the test certificate for flame retardance according to DIN 4102 B1. In the UK market the industry increasingly demands this Class B1 standard which the Hesse PU meets. This high spec has not meant any compromise on finish – the lacquer is resilient, light fast and formulated with additional light protection. It is a coating lacquer for priming and top coating that achieves impressive results and is universally applicable. The product can also be used on bleached wood and boasts high flow and levelling characteristics. The stringent testing criteria means the Hesse PU Multicoat is ideal for high-stress environments such as restaurants, kitchens, bathrooms or any area demanding the highest levels of both chemical and mechanical resistance. It can also be pigmented to suit almost all colour tones and a wide range of gloss levels.
F&JP_281.indd 34
As to be expected from Hesse, safety does not stop with the fire testing. The DE4259x is free of wood preservatives, toxic-heavy metals, phthalate plasticisers, formaldehyde, CMRs category 1A + 1B and volatile aromatic and halogenated organic compounds. Hesse Lignal “will not compromise on its customers’ health at any cost”. Hesse is using its partnership with Redwood Innovations to distribute this product in the UK. Customers wishing to try the PU Multicoat system can call Redwood and benefit from strong technical back-up over the phone, and on site if required. 02392 233310 sales@redwoodinnovations.co.uk

Established in 1908, Garrards Timber is the oldest established family-run timber merchants trading in Huddersfield. The company specialises in a range of sawn and machined softwoods and hardwoods, panel products, structural timbers and joinery products.
Garrards Timber invest in two new Leadermac 723 Hypermac moulders
Garrards’ continued growth can be attributed to a professional and experienced team, offering one of the largest stock ranges in the North of England. To maintain its position as a market leader, there has been a multimillion pound investment in the form of a new internal joinery showroom, a 10,000ft2 timber and panel distribution warehouse and most recently, two Leadermac Hypermac 723 foursided moulders.
F&JP_281.indd 36
The new joinery showroom sells internal, external, bi-folding and French doors online. The company can supply any of the doors shown on its website nationwide. “In our branch in Huddersfield we have a selection of display doors to choose from,” explains Garrards’ managing director. Jim Moore. “We pride ourselves in not having high-pressure sales people, only helpful staff to offer solutions to your needs – we can find something to suit any
budget, our experts will help customers to find the wooden doors ideal for individual needs.” An in-house trade centre has been introduced to help provide all the accessories any individual or company may need to perform specific joinery and woodworking jobs. Softwoods, hardwoods, sheet materials, doors, stair parts, worktops, windows, loft ladders, flooring, fencing, pine boards, MFC, building materials and decking are all now offered from stock at the Huddersfield site. A large range of both soft- and hardwoods are always kept in stock – including a variety of specialist woods, such as maple, cherry, oak, sapele, walnut and many more that the sawmill can cut to size and machine. The company also delivers across mainland UK. Garrards has its own timber mill, with excellent machining facilities – it can offer specialised machining to match any existing pattern or special requirements. It always keeps a larger range of machined items in stock, in both softand hardwood “This equipment, and more specifically, the Leadermac moulders, has allowed us to increase production by 20%, decrease downtime by 15% and provide a more consistent finish for the customer,” explains Jim.

“We opted for an increased spindle speed from the standard 6000rpm to 8000rpm to enable us to achieve our desired high quality finish. We also chose a bespoke seven-head configuration and this has improved our machining capabilities in planing and profiling. “Investing in this equipment has meant the service and quality of product going out to our customers is second to none. Jim remarked. “We explored many different manufacturers on the market, and Leadermac’s ability to collaborate with us to provide a product specifically tailored to our requirements, made them the obvious choice.” Kevin Wright, Leadermac UK managing director, says: “The two Leadermac machines supplied were from our Hypermac range which offers over 70 different spindle arrangements. These machines are equipped as standard with a whole number of superior features including all cast-iron bodies, motorised electronic settings, hard chrome bed plates and fences, six driven bed rollers, inverter-controlled feed speeds between 6-36m per minute with LED display, automatic bed lubrication system and Siemens new type IE3 rated energy saving motors. “We are very happy to be associated with the supply of Leadermac machines at Garrards, they are a nice company and people to do business with.” 01942 859933 kevin@leadermac.uk.com leadermac.uk.com

BFM joins Heico to challenge upholstery students British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) has joined forces with Heico Fasteners to sponsor a new award as part of Heico’s long standing Upholstery Design Competition. The competition challenges upholstery students to create a scaled down chair incorporating the company’s decorative furniture nails and buttons and the winning designs were announced at the recent January Furniture Show at the NEC. Over 30 design inspired students entered this year’s competition with Reece Jones from the Upholstery Skills Centre deservedly coming out on top with his innovative Puzzle design. Reece’s creative design, which made use of Heico’s colourful range of enamelled nails, was inspired by the wooden block puzzle game and involved several interlocking blocks forming a cube which, when taken apart, revealed a simple chair and proved to be a real brain teaser on Heico’s stand at the show, especially when trying to put the puzzle back together again! The winning designs were announced at the show and alongside the winning Puzzle chair runner-up awards went to Jade Peel for her topical Brexit design, incorporating Heico’s Crystal buttons and traditional upholstery nails, and Robert Davey with his Speedboat chair that used the company’s decorative nail strip as well as their Crystal nails. Robert’s design also won the new BFM Award

Robert says of his ingenious folding design: “Dad had just built a boat along the lines of the ones you see in Venice and I thought not only would the shape be an interesting one to transfer on to a chair design, but the colours could work well too, transferred onto vinyl.” Stuart Elmy, marketing manager for Heico adds: “This competition offers a great
The students certainly put a lot of hard work into their designs with competition winner Reece Jones saying of his Puzzle chair: “It was an incredibly complex design to produce involving seven different pieces. SOFTWARE
www.furnitureproduction.net
“Cabinet Vision speeds up our process and has completely eliminated errors from it.” Those are the words of Matthew Marsden, whose company, Matthew Marsden Furniture, only began using the software in 2016, and quickly became advanced users at a high level …
Matthew Marsden’s fast, error-free process Along with manufacturing kitchens, bedrooms and studies, Matthew Marsden Furniture is also known for boot, gun and wine rooms, working directly with end-users and one trade outlet. Whilst the company has supplied kitchens all over the world, including to Moscow, Switzerland, Germany and Spain, most customers are close to its Lancashire base. Everything is designed in Cabinet Vision Solid Ultimate from Vero Software, and the NC code is sent to an Andi Stratos CNC router with its Screen-To-Machine module. “We can be totally confident that what we design in Cabinet Vision will be faithfully reproduced when it’s cut,” says Matthew. “As long as we draw it correctly, the finished component is going to be perfect.” And he says his team has never found anything that cannot be drawn up in the software. “For example, we’ve done complex circular butchers’ blocks with revolving shelves and curved doors with no difficulty,” he says. “And it’s ideal for showing customers exactly what their finished room will look like.” That latter point was the main reason he decided to invest in Cabinet Vision. “Previously we drew up our designs in another CAD system which was only 2D, and our customers struggled to picture how it would look in their homes. We

Cabinet Vision offers full-colour 3D renders
often needed to go through several redraws with them, and even then it was still hard for them to visualise it from the 2D. “But now, with Cabinet Vision’s full-colour 3D renders, they can see realistically what it will look like in situ straight away, and it saves us having to do numerous redraws.” As well as showing customers the entire layout on a giant TV screen in the showroom, the team can also highlight specific cabinets and units. “We can pick out a large pantry cabinet, spin it round to show it from all angles, and adapt it there and then with the number of shelves and drawers the customer wants,” says Matthew. Any engraving that is required – including words on drawer fronts – is incorporated through another Vero product, Alphacam. Once Matthew and a colleague have created all the panels and completed the full design, the file is sent to project manager Steven Millington, who double-checks all the drawings and then creates the cutting lists – another benefit of using Cabinet Vision. “Previously the cutting lists and nesting were done manually, which was time consuming and there was a lot of scope for error,” says Matthew. “With nesting, I’d draw an 8 x 4 sheet and individually import each panel. Then the completed panel would be imported into another CAM system for the toolpaths and drill holes to be added, and finally sent to the machine. “The whole process used to take days. Now, it’s just hours. I create the cutting lists and include any additional information that the shopfloor may need if it’s a particularly complex cabinet, and print off the drawings, passing everything to the workshop. Then I send the NC code to the router. So it speeds up our workflow considerably, while eliminating errors.”
As well as using the Cabinet Vision support portal occasionally, Steven finds the customer forums can normally answer any queries. In addition, he says YouTube videos are a good source of information, showing various ways of achieving what he needs to do. Matthew says it is vital that his components are high precision, so everything fits perfectly on site. “The cabinets, drawer boxes, doors, frames and shelves are all cut at the same time, so we can’t afford any hiccups during final assembly. “Spending an additional 15 minutes at the design stage making sure each cabinet is perfect may save an hour or more further down the process. We have total confidence that the Cabinet Vision designs will be accurately reproduced in the NC code and cut exactly as required. “It means that once we’ve finished designing a cabinet we can forget about it, knowing full details will be in the cutting list, and that the shopfloor drawings will show the workshop manager and machine operator everything they need to know.” The Marsden family has been running businesses – including a DIY store – on the site now housing the showroom, offices and workshop, in Leyland, Preston, since 1929. “My grandfather started as a builder, then my father took over, and I started working for him as a joiner,” explains Matthew. “I really enjoyed doing the kitchens and staircases, and when I was 21 I took a loan from my father to put some kitchen displays in the shop here, and my business grew from that, now employing 14 people.” verosoftware.com cabinetvision.com mmfurniture.co.uk

Imagine that in your mind you have the best concept in the world, with extraordinary structures, sophisticated details and a stunning design – but how do you convey your ideas to your customers? Software provider CAD+T believes it has the answer …
One step ahead with CAD+T
CAD+T – a full design and delivery solution at the user’s fingertips
In the scenario outlined above, simple 2D plans or hand-drawn sketches will not always convince a demanding audience. And if, miraculously, one manages to sell a concept, the issues begin to crop up – how do I get my construction drawings? How can I get my parts lists without much effort? And how do I connect my CNC machine? With CAD+T software solutions, the whole process, from design to construction and manufacturing, can be handled within only one package. According to the company, designing in 3D is easy, and with only a few clicks, attractive renderings can be created, even for highly-customised and non-standard designs. To make customer presentations even more impressive, CAD+T now features a VR function, which lets the supplier show their ideas to their customers as if they were standing right inside the design. CAD+T offers 60 modules for furniture manufacturers, interior designers and traders
F&JP_281.indd 44
CAD+T now features a VR function
When it comes to the technical side, data can be transferred seamlessly from design to construction. Again, customised parts are at the core of the system, and everything can be adapted at every step of the process. Subsequently, parts lists, hardware lists and other manufacturing information summaries are generated automatically, and making a connection with a CNC machine is trouble-free. Thus, time is saved, and errors avoided – according to CAD+T, customers report a 10% reduction of material costs, 30% reduction of labour costs and an overall increase in productivity of 60%. Founded in 1990, CAD+T is headquartered
in Austria. With seven branches – in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Australia, the UAE and Thailand – and more than 60 employees, CAD+T’s main product is software, which consists overall of 60 different modules for furniture manufacturers, interior designers and furniture traders. The modular structure allows CAD+T to create the ideal package for each customer according to specific requirements. The pricing is charged per module, so customers only pay for what they really need. Besides software, CAD+T offers regular training and consultation for its customers. cadt-solutions.com

SOFTWARE
www.furnitureproduction.net
Self-supporting stairs are among the most popular stair constructions at present, according to software specialist SEMA. With stairs increasingly becoming design elements in homes, this type of stair, with its clear, minimalist look, has become a favourite of customers – and good stair software must be able to handle this type of product, so that nothing goes wrong with it …
SEMA supports stylish stairs
At a single click, all treads and stairs bolts for the entire stairs can be modified
Self-supporting stairs have been integrated into SEMA’s stairs software. This particular type of stair is constructionally demanding, as here the loads cannot be distributed via the strings, for example, but exclusively via the wall and the handrail. For the user of the SEMA stair software, however, construction is easy. With several input options, the position of the connecting bolts can be easily and exactly defined. In order to enable this, the corresponding bolts have been added to the master data. Together with the existing ‘Stairs container’ function, it is possible to save combinations such as treads and stairs bolts and to allocate this combination to a construction via a one-click solution.
F&JP_281.indd 46
At a single click, all treads and stairs bolts for the entire stairs will be modified – the construction of sophisticated stairs has clearly become more user-friendly thanks to SEMA. SEMA’s Stairs Construction software is based on a modular structure and has been used successfully by more than 1000 small tradesmen, cabinetmakers and joiners, as well as by large-scale wood-working centres. The SEMA group invests an average of 15% of its yearly turnover in the further development of its software solutions at its headquarters in Wildpoldsried, Germany, and is thus able to react quickly to the changing requirements of the market. 07809 219411 info@sema-soft.co.uk

The trio had a very clear vision of what they wanted to create with the company – from day one, they laid out a set of principles that has helped guide the business from a standing start to a £14 million turnover in less than seven years, despite a recession.
Forza Doors underpins its rapid growth with Homag machinery and software
Forza Doors’ customised edgebander handles all door edges and hardwood lipping
Forza Doors specialises in the preparation of wood veneers and timber utilised in the production of doors, frames, panels and associated joinery for use in the commercial interior construction market; this encompasses office, education, health, hotel and retail. The company is dedicated to providing its clients with a superior range of veneer or laminate doors and panels, as managing director Nick Hare explains: “Our mission has always been to deliver a first class service that can meet demanding project lead times. We recognise that site events can compress the completion schedule, therefore it is crucial that we are able to meet such fast track requirements. “A key element of our service is the provision of totally bespoke handcrafted veneers with a 21st century CNC machined door or panel which guarantees consistent dimensional accuracy.
This is fundamental in giving clients the confidence to specify and use Forza products within their projects.” Homag machinery helps deliver quality and consistency Alan Brown, sales director at Forza Doors, underlines why the right machinery and software are so important: “When you’re a young growing business, you have to be able to deliver consistently excellent products to tight deadlines. The commercial fit-out market is very ‘lastminute.com’. It is driven by a lack of detailed information which exerts more pressure on us, as the manufacturer, to meet the really challenging timeframes that are put in place by our clients. This is not going to change and so for us, a machine breakdown can be very disruptive. “That is why we made the business decision to migrate to all Homag equipment. We’re not

quite there yet, but at least 80% of our machinery comes from the Homag Group. It includes a beam saw, edgebanders, sanders, CNC five-axis routers and a roller coating line. To run these machines we use the market-leading woodWOP 7 software, as we believe it is the best solution in the market. “From day one, we have invested in Homag machines because the Germans give you exactly what you specify, unlike the sometimes wingand-a-prayer approach of other manufacturers. With Homag, there is an unparalleled level of build quality and robustness that you cannot get anywhere else. “Yes, they tend to be more expensive than some of the other options, but you’re buying the best. So Homag not only gives you technically advanced solutions, but also complete peace of mind. This is further enhanced by the superb service back-up which includes online support via the internet with Germany. “This service is second to none and nine times out of ten we can solve any issues without the need to call out an engineer. On the odd occasion we do have a Homag engineer onsite, you know they will arrive promptly and get you up and running again as fast as possible. They are always very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful.”

Operating across two sites “The company’s rapid expansion has thrown up some interesting challenges,” claims Forza’s technical director, Philip Duckworth. He continues, “We now have 120 staff operating across two sites, giving us around 40,000 sq ft of production space. Whilst these sites are close to each other, it is vital we have good communication between the two. “All the new Homag machinery features the powerTouch control screen which is an excellent tool. Being a touch screen system, rather than a keyboard and mouse, it gives you fast and easy accessibility to diagnostics. “The operators can receive emails from the office or each other on screen. If a guy in plant A has a problem on his machine he can email his colleague in plant B on a similar machine and sort the problem. Without this communication ability, he would have to walk over to the other factory to see the guy and discuss a way of solving the issue.”
“It is vital that our woodworking machinery can handle everything from batch one upwards. We have found that the Homag equipment is more than up to the job.”
High-end commercial door market “Our customers are in the high-end commercial door market where a suite of doors in an office is, to a certain extent, a piece of furniture. We don’t stock anything in standard sizes, every order that goes through our production is bespoke and we handle a high volume of orders every day. “Consequently, it is vital that our woodworking machinery can handle everything from batch one upwards. We have found that the Homag equipment is more than up to the job. The quality of finished work pieces is outstanding and all the machines consistently perform at an exceptional level.
“We specified our Holzma beam saw with an optimisation package so that for each piece cut it generates a series of labels for the manufacturing stations further down the production line. The saw is used to cut fire door cores 44mm to 69mm thick and for heavy, 45mm thick, MDF cutting which we double stack. This has doubled our throughput by cutting two for one. “Previously, our timber partition system required the hardwood edges to be applied by hand and that was very time and labour intensive. To overcome this, we ordered a specially built edgebander from Homag which

runs at 16 metres per minute and handles door edges as well. The machine copes with 10mm and 18mm hardwood lipping to a depth of 80mm and has revolutionised this area of our production process. “The investment in a Homag five-axis CNC machine was made to cut down on time spent on tool changes when milling doors for ironmongery. It used to take us at least 15 minutes to process a door; now it’s down to six and a half minutes which is more than twice as quick as before and yet the accuracy has improved too.” A company you can trust Managing director Nick Hare is very complimentary about the Homag UK team: “We’ve known Roger Wilks, one of Homag’s area sales managers, for more than 25 years. He is very good; we trust him, he comes from a manufacturing background so he knows his onions when it comes to talking about machines. “Roger never fails to impress us with his unbiased and honest approach. He tells it like it is, so you know he won’t try and pull the wool over your eyes. In fact, that’s a trait of all the team at Homag UK, they always look to give you the best solution for your business. “The people at the top of the company, Paul Cooper and Simon Brooks, are always willing to spend time with us. When it comes to finance, they’ve helped us out with great deals from Homag Finance using Deutsche Leasing. The interest rate is amongst the best you can get in the country; I think that is because Deutsche appreciates the quality of the machines and that, consequently, they have high residual values. “There is no doubt that Homag has been very supportive and helpful throughout our period of rapid growth and we really appreciate this caring attitude,” concludes a buoyant Nick Hare. WINDOW & DOOR PRODUCTION
www.furnitureproduction.net
Since woodworking machines were first introduced, one of their biggest uses has been producing bespoke windows and doors – timber frame doors, and in later years solid core doors, reports Masterwood, which offers a range of solutions to meet modern demands …
Door and window production by Masterwood
Large diameter tooling at Masterwood
The procedure to make a timber window or door has not changed – once the timber is prepared, the cut-off lines, mortise and tenon positions, etc are marked. Then it is a case of setting and using each machine, the X-Cut, a mortiser, a tenoner, a spindle moulder, and maybe an overhead router. After that, it is time to assemble – or, in most cases, make everything fit together, including cutting out haunches on the band saw and using hand routers for ironmongery like locks, hinges, and handles. “As a wood machinist apprentice I spent many hours drawing lines on to door stiles and then swinging on an old Wadkin Chisel mortise arm to try and cut out all those mortises staring at me on the pallet,” says Masterwood’s sales director, Dave Kennard. Today life can be so much easier, with just one machine – a CNC machining centre. For the last 25 years, Italian CNC machine manufacturer Masterwood has been developing machines to meet the demands of solid timber bespoke joinery. These developments include: the use of large diameter tooling to allow full-length mortise and tenon joints to be produced; higher-powered
F&JP_281.indd 52
router motors to allow stack tooling to be used; heavy-duty clamps to ensure components are held rigid on the machine bed; more tooling positions to cover the extra tools required for window and door production; automatic bed positioning to speed up production times and reduce set-up times; and specialised software to ensure the shortest time from design to production. Masterwood can supply a full range of solutions to suit any customer’s manufacturing requirements, from its entry-level Project 250, through to the top-end Project 565, a five-axis machine with all possible options for tooling and clamping. Added to this, the company can provide dedicated machines like the 4WIN2 – a new version of the original 4WIN, a CNC machine with a unique clamping system for windows where,
according to Masterwood, the workpiece never moves. Each component is firmly held in place while every operation is carried out – even for the recesses for the ironmongery – so once the material leaves the machine it can be put together like a jigsaw and is ready for finishing and glazing. With an automatic loading and unloading system, the machine can run unattended for up to four hours. Traditional box windows can be seen in all UK major towns and cities (a traditional part of joinery history), and are notorious for being difficult to produce with traditional methods – the many varying set-ups and joints are a minefield for costly mistakes. Today, Masterwood has a number of customers that have produced traditional sliding sash windows on their CNCs, where the machining

time for one complete frame and a pair of sashes is under two man hours. The parts all then fit together with practically no bench or hand work. According to the company, this same job could take a full day using traditional methods. Masterwood has found that customers with CNC machines can now produce batches or one-off windows and doors in a fraction of the time that is needed with traditional woodworking machines. When put up against window lines, the CNC machines can look slower on individual operations, but if one looks at the manufacturing time for a fully-finished window or door, the CNC will come out on top, as there is far more that can be produced – such as like glazing beads being cut out and mitred to the finished length, and the production of all ironmongery recesses. Other areas like shaped work, after-assembly work, and the cutting-out of haunches on tenons – all of it gives the CNC an advantage. On top of this, while the machine is working, the operator can be doing another job, getting
the next batch prepared, or assembling the last batch. Masterwood also finds that the tooling costs for a CNC can be as much as 50% lower than that required for window lines, and Health & Safety is greatly improved by removing high-risk operations from traditional machines like shape work. Solid core and fire doors can be produced on the entry-level Project 250, but in many cases Masterwood’s customers have gone to the longer 5200mm bed sizes of the Project 300 and 400 ranges, which allow doors and frames to be tandem loaded so that the CNC never stops. The lower-cost five-axis machines – like the Project 265 – now available are also proving popular with door customers, as they can help cut down tooling costs. Robots can also be introduced at this stage to automatically load and unload the machine, including passing the information to the CNC control as to what work needs to be carried out. For higher production, Masterwood offers the Project Door and DoorLine CNCs, machines that

can be used with handling equipment to allow doors to be fed in automatically, with pod and clamping positions all set by the PC. Once the door has been machined, it can be fed out and stacked, and the next door is fed in. This system can then develop into a fullyautomated production line, in which a stack of doors is loaded onto the handling system, and the full line takes over with anything up to three doors per minute being sized, apertures cut, leading edges added, along with all ironmongery recesses cut. Locks and hinges can also be inserted and fixed in position before stacking for offloading. Door frame components can also be run on a production line with joints, hinge recesses and keeps all machined, along with weatherseals being inserted into each component. An important part of any CNC system is software – one can have the best machines in the world, but without software to operate them correctly, production does not improve as it should. Along with all its machine developments, Masterwood has always been at the forefront of developing software in tandem with the machines, which ensures that both are fully compatible. This range of software comprises MasterWindow, MasterSlidingSash and MasterDoor, which cover all the various shapes and sizes of products that customers require. For anyone producing windows and doors, Masterwood can supply the packages for small batches up to mass production automated systems like those already installed around the world for leading companies like Jeld-Wen, 3elle, Comeca, Scrigno, Audasso, Vest-Wood and Fenestra. office@masterwoodgb.co.uk masterwood.com

already attracted a lot of interest from the US market,” says William. William Furniture, established in 2006, is today well known for its modern contemporary bedroom furniture. The company is located in Dongguan City and has approximately 300 employees working in the company’s modernised workshops occupying more than 28,000m2.
Abet Laminati to add customer value with Threespine click furniture technology by Välinge Välinge has signed a license agreement with Abet Laminati for the use of its Threespine click furniture technology. By implementing the technology in its products, the Italian producer will now be able to offer additional benefits to its existing customers as well as to create new business opportunities. “We saw this as a great opportunity to add customer value, both from a cost and design perspective,” says Abet Laminati general manager Cesare
Tonini. “With these new products we will help our customers to significantly reduce costs related to transportation and assembly, and the end products will look much better without any visible fittings.” The first line of products featuring Threespine, available this spring, will be compact laminate panels for lockers typically used in public dressing rooms. Other future products featuring Threespine are wall panels for applications such as public restrooms, also known as cubicles.
Skånebeslag uses Threespine in new line of bathroom cabinets Välinge has signed a license agreement with the Swedish bathroom cabinet manufacturer Skånebeslag for the use of Threespine click furniture technology. Skånebeslag will implement Threespine technology in a new line of bathroom cabinets made of compact laminate with the aim to offer new designs to its customers. “Threespine technology will
enable us to use mitre joints which is quite unique for products in compact laminate. In combination with removing all visible screws we will now be able to further improve the design of our cabinets,” says Skånebeslag CEO Mikael Bornéus. ”We are convinced that the new line of cabinets will appeal to architects and interior designers and that, in turn, will help us achieve our goal of continuous growth.” In addition to improved design, Threespine will enable faster assembly as well as other benefits such as drill-free wall mounting and the possibility to hide transformers and cables. ”We had been working on some technical details to improve our cabinets and with Threespine several pieces of the puzzle fell into place,” continues Mikael. The family-owned company Skånebeslag has been in the furniture business since 1972 and today supplis products to all Nordic countries. The first products with Threespine technology are scheduled to be available in the spring of this year.

UK furniture manufacturers face serious resource problems if restrictions are placed on the movement of labour to the UK from other EU countries as a result of Brexit.
BFM survey highlights looming skills crisis
BFM’s survey highlights that with possible restrictions on movement of labour as a result of Brexit, UK furniture manufacturers could face serious staffing issues
A British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) survey of companies, accounting for an estimated 9% of total production employees across the industry, shows that 34% of employees are non-UK nationals from the EU. Half the businesses surveyed predicted that if curbs were placed on this source of labour, the industry’s skills shortages would worsen, notably among upholsterers, sewers, frame assemblers and wood machinists. Of the 50 companies that took part in the survey, 52% said they relied on the skills of non-UK EU labour. Some even suggested that any restrictions on accessing this workforce could result in moving more or part of production abroad. The sector that expressed most concern was upholstery, particularly among larger volume producers, some of which employ fewer UK nationals than migrant EU labour. In-house training, together with apprentice recruitment, was in the plans of most businesses faced with possible labour restrictions, particularly among larger employers about to be affected by the Apprentice Levy (from April 2017). Also worrying employers was having a ready supply of skilled labour to enable businesses to perform efficiently and meet fluctuating needs. There was clear concern about recruiting British workers of quality, interested in working
F&JP_281.indd 58
in a factory environment. Multi-skilling was suggested as one way to meet a skills gap. 36% of the sample is already experiencing problems in recruiting and/or retaining EU labour from outside the UK, with some evidence that Romanian and Polish workers were returning home. One company said the UK was no longer being spoken about, as a place to work, among family and friends. The survey also asked companies how long it would take to adequately train replacement labour. Responses varied dependent on the level of skill required and local labour availability. The most common replies were up to six months (42%), followed by up to 12 months (25%). One third of the sample considered 18 months or more would be necessary. One company – a small bespoke maker of kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms and bedrooms – commented: “While we do not have any particular problems at the present time, we can envisage a situation whereby – if EU labour is withdrawn from other furniture companies – this will create a general shortage of skilled people and force up wage rates. We think it is likely that it would be well-nigh impossible to find replacement skilled workers or even to find labour to train!” Says BFM MD Jackie Bazeley: “It is essential for the sustainability of the industry that we address the skills gap through education and
training. However, this cannot be accomplished overnight and therefore any restrictions placed on recruiting labour from the EU has to have a transition period whereby companies can upskill current employees and/or recruit and train new ones. “With the advent of the apprenticeship levy, the BFM will be working with peer organisations and Occupational Awards (OAL) to ensure that companies make the most of all that the levy offers. However companies should now be looking to take advantage of an opportunity to use current apprenticeship funding to upskill current workers.” The survey findings will now be presented to the British Furniture Confederation with a view to putting a case to Government about the industry’s concerns to foster and retain the skills it needs to function. The BFM survey was conducted by email across a sample of 50 companies (employing a total of 5267 production workers), representing an estimated 9% of total production employees in the UK furniture industry – applying the total sample against the official total industry figure in employment (80,000) in the UK furniture manufacturing industry and using the formula 3:1 production vs admin/sales/support staff, equating to 60,000 production employees. The full report can be found on the BFM website. bfm.org.uk

The British Woodworking Federation’s Joinery State of Trade Survey has indicated that the benefits of increased joinery sales are being balanced out by inflationary pressures such as wages and the impact of exchange rates on raw material costs.
BWF cites concerns despite solid quarter for British woodworking manufacturers With business rates changes set to hit many joinery companies from April, the balance of respondents reported that rates for their current property would increase as a result of the recent revaluations, with almost one third expecting an increase of over 5%. BWF policy and communications executive Matt Mahony comments on the state of the joinery industry and the business rates changes: “With the cost of doing business a concern for many in our sector, we surveyed what the consequences of the Business Rates Revaluations would be and were concerned to find that almost a third of respondents indicated an incoming business rates increase of over 5%. “The high street may have been a major focus of the ‘business rates revolt’, but further cost rises for our industry are unpalatable. “There are undoubtedly companies that will benefit from the changes, but on balance our industry looks to be getting a bad deal from the revaluations – this is especially galling as we have long campaigned for low energy manufacturers to be incentivised and it makes no sense to include plant and machinery in rateable value when trying to drive investment and job creation.
F&JP_281.indd 60
“Looking at the rest of the survey, on the whole we saw a stable, although by no means easy quarter for the woodworking industry. Sales volumes had increased by 26% on balance and were anticipated to grow again for the next quarter (Q1 2017), but at a lower growth rate than before. “Further depreciations in the sterling also raised the cost of imported materials, meaning that raw materials continue to be the main driver of input price inflation, with wages and salaries also having a big impact on costs. “Realistically it’s not a bad picture at this point of time, although uncertainty over the impact of Brexit continues to linger in the background as it has been for the last couple of quarters. You can see the impact on costs, but thankfully this doesn’t seem to have hit the investment intentions of joinery businesses or their plans to take on more staff. “In the longer term the big questions are whether Government and industry can work effectively to deliver new plans for housing and manufacturing and also to what extent the market will be able to capitalise on Brexit. First the sector will have to get to grips with the major changes in training which could help address the availability of skilled labour and the issue of joiners having to provide a broader spread of services to fill main contractor skills gaps on site.” Key points from the BWF Joinery State of Trade Survey Q4 2016 include: – A balance of 20% of respondents reported that business rates for their current property would increase as a result of recent Business Rates Revaluations in
England and Wales with 32% of respondents indicating that their rates would increase by over 5%. – A balance of 26% of joinery companies reported an increase in sales volumes for Q4 2016 from the previous quarter. This follows on from 55% of joinery companies reporting an increase in sales volumes in Q3 2016 from Q2 2016. – Manufacturers felt that sales volumes would improve in the next quarter, with a balance of 34% predicting an increase for Q1 2017, and a balance of 22% predicting an increase over the next year. – 19% of companies reported a current order book of future work extending beyond three months – down 9% from the previous quarter – with 58% now saying that their order book extended from between one and three months. – Demand was listed as the most likely constraint on output over the next year by 45% of respondents. Capacity and labour availability came next, with 21% and 18% of respondents feeling that they were most likely to constrain output. Raw material prices had become the main factor for 13%. – 39% of respondents on balance reported increasing their labour force in the last year, with 57%
of respondents anticipating an increase labour force over the next year. – Raw material costs were noted as the main inflationary factor for unit costs for 87% of respondents, with wages/salaries increases pushing up unit costs for 81% of respondents on balance. – Exchange rates were a factor in inflating unit costs for 57% of respondents – having risen from 5% a year previously. – 67% of respondents on balance reported an inflationary impact in unit costs through fuel costs. – Investment in product improvement had been increased by 50% of companies on balance over the past year, with a balance of 51% to boost investment over the next year. – Investment in manufacturing equipment spending had been increased by 53% of companies on balance over the past year, with a balance of 66% to boost investment over the next year. Global wood panel surfacing market report The decoration of wood-based panels with a variety of surfacing materials is a key valueadding step in the value chain. As the global demand for wood-based panels grows, mainly at the expense of solid wood and veneer-based products, surfacing materials benefit. Among the findings from Pöyry Management Consulting’s latest report for this sector, Panel Surfacing up to 2020, perhaps predicatably, China’s position as the world’s largest consumer of surfacing materials remains unchanged. Across the world, over 70% of surfaced woodbased panels are used for furniture, while the remaining 30% are construction-related products, including flooring and doors. Many consumers prefer lightweight, ready-to-assemble and lowmaintenance furniture at affordable prices and the analysed surfacing materials for wood-based panels meet these requirements much better than materials for traditional furniture. The 2010-2015 period was excellent for surfacing materials demand growth. The postgreat recession demand recovery drove the global market to an all-time high of 6.6% growth per annum. Out of the six main surfacing materials the two clear winners were low pressure melamine (LPM/TFL) and laminates, while wood veneer experienced a 5% market share loss. When comparing the regional performance, Asia’s double digit growth resulted in an 11% market share gain, translating into 59% share of the total global surfacing materials demand. Looking ahead to 2020, HPL and CLP laminates are predicted to experience the highest relative growth, however in absolute volume terms low pressure melamine is set to remain the dominant material, accounting for over 60% of the global demand. The only material with negative future growth (minus 0.5% per annum) is veneer. Its performance, cost and sourcing issues are being constantly challenged by its main rival, low pressure melamine. Veneer is going to be relegated from the second most used material to fifth place by 2020, while all other materials are
forecast to grow between 2-4% per annum. Overall, future surfacing materials market growth is going to slow down to some 3% per annum in the most likely (central) scenario. “Growth started from a low base after the global financial crisis,” explains Johan Carlsson, principal at Pöyry Management Consulting. “Additionally, China is expected to accelerate transition from manufacturing to a consumption and servicedriven economy. At the same time, there is little hope for significant growth from other BRIC countries as the recession in Brazil and slow recovery result in marginal demand growth in South America. “Demand in Russia will remain at current levels with the potential for further falls in the short term if oil prices do not improve. Last but not least, the Eurozone debt crisis and Brexit uncertainty continue to hamper market growth in Europe.” There has been significant investment in woodbased panel production capacity in South east Asia to meet growing demand. However, wood fibre scarcity in this region continues to increase and is likely to be a game changer, albeit in the long term.
By 2020 it is not likely that China’s position as the world’s largest consumer of surfacing materials, accounting for over 50% of the global demand, and the number one furniture producer in the world, will change. Recent merger and acquisition activity has significant long term potential to change the industry structure on a regional or even global scale. European wood-based panel producer Kronospan has entered North America, bringing with it forward integrated business models and investment in modern equipment. South American wood-based panel producer Arauco has entered North America and Europe through acquisitions and joint ventures, while consolidation among liquid coating producers has created two global giants – AkzoNobel and Sherwin-Williams. In the recent years the level of innovation and new product development has been remarkably high. While cost reduction is a constant, innovation is mainly driven by the need for improved performance (functionality and/or design) or, to a much lesser extent, by sustainability. More recently there has been the first signs of circular economy principles being adopted. New materials and decorative techniques are clamouring for attention and bring new unique selling points. Powder coatings, direct printing and other new innovative surfacing materials continue to gain market share at the expense of traditional materials, albeit from a very small base. While the total estimated size of the global market for new surfacing materials is currently some 2%, they are set to make further inroads. These are some of the findings of Pöyry’s Panel Surfacing up to 2020 report. In this forward-looking assessment Pöyry addresses global macroeconomic environment trends to create three future demand scenarios as well as providing expert industry insights. poyry.com/panel2020 Images courtesy of Pöyry

World first as recycling of MDF waste moves a step closer The world’s first ever technology to recycle MDF waste has moved a step closer to reality. MDF Recovery has successfully concluded proof of concept trials to develop a commercially viable process to recover wood fibre from waste MDF. It is the culmination of more than six years’ research and development to create a technology which will offer the first alternative to the use of landfill or burning to dispose of MDF. Britain, alone, disposes of around 350,000 tonnes of MDF each year. The solution generates a new raw material source for the wood/ natural fibre industry that reduces the demand on standing forests. The recovered fibre is of the same high quality as virgin wood fibre and provides feedstock to the manufacturers of MDF board, insulation products and horticultural growing products. Co-founder and managing director Craig Bartlett is now ready to take the proprietary technology to the commercial market. Craig, who established MDF Recovery in 2009, says: “We have already begun discussions with a number of leading companies and organisations operating in the MDF production and waste industries and look forward to progressing these during the early part of 2017. “The recycling process we have developed is a genuine world first. There is no other environmentally-

friendly alternative to the use of landfill or burning to dispose of MDF waste. “Our technology can be retrofitted or designed into new plants and offers a robust solution for reworking waste and increasing the yield at the MDF manufacturing facility. Zero waste production is now a real possibility. The financial payback is dependent on the size of MDF plant but in larger plants is expected within 18 months. “The technology can also process industrial and commercial forms of MDF waste, allowing manufacturers to take back material from their customers – a so called ‘closed loop’ solution.” This has been particularly attractive to the retail sector which utilises significant amounts of MDF in shopfittings. MDF – medium density fibreboard – was first devised in the 1970s and today more than 50million tons are produced globally every year, servicing the furniture, construction and DIY markets. Prominent markets outside of the UK include Continental Europe, USA, Russia, Brazil and China. Demand is increasing in Eastern Europe and Asia. It is estimated that between 30,000 and 60,000 tons of MDF waste could be recycled by MDF Recovery each year in the UK and almost three million tons globally. Before establishing MDF Recovery with co-founder Jim New, Craig › worked as head of research and

Britons are increasingly turning to the bottle at bedtime – and less and less towards their partner.
More Brits hit the booze to snooze According to the results of its latest Great British Bedtime report (first conducted in 2013), leading advisory body, The Sleep Council, says alcohol in particular is increasingly being used as a ‘sleep remedy’. A quarter (25%) of those questioned for the 2017 report as opposed to 16% in 2013, said they used alcohol to help them nod off. And the number of Brits who don’t share a bed with their partner has increased from 8% to 12%. As well as alcohol, more and more people are turning to medication, music and meditation in their quest to get a good night’s sleep. Not surprising, perhaps, given almost three-quarters of Brits sleep less than seven hours a night with more than one in ten (12%) sleeping for less than five hours. Those turning to music to help them sleep grew from 17% in 2013 to 24% in 2017, and meditation has also grown in popularity – from 8% to 12%. But far fewer people (26% in 2017 versus 41% in 2013) say the last thing they do at night is read – traditionally regarded as a ‘sleep inducing’ activity. Published in time for National Bed Month (March), results of The Sleep Council’s Great British Bedtime Report provide a ground-breaking insight into the nation’s changing sleep habits. “It is the first time we have ever undertaken such wide-ranging benchmark consumer research,” says Lisa Artis of The Sleep Council, “and being able to compare this year’s data against that produced in 2013 really helps to set the nation’s changing sleep habits into context.” In four short years, marked changes evidenced by the research show that we’re getting even less sleep. Almost three-quarters (74%) of Brits sleep less than seven hours per night while the number of people who said they get less than five hours a night has grown from 7% to 12%. For many people (61% of those questioned in 2017), between five to seven hours a night is the norm. Drinking alcohol before bedtime has risen from 16% to 25% of those questioned with men (30%) more likely than women (20%) to have done so. 30% of people aged 45-54 also cited alcohol as something they use to help them nod off, making them the biggest users by age group. The trend for sleeping apart continues to grow. More than one in 10 of those questioned (12% as opposed to 8% in
F&JP_281.indd 66
2013) said they did not share the same bed as their spouse or partner. And nearly a quarter of couples (24% v 22%) now sleep apart at least some of the time. More people are buying bigger beds. The number of respondents who bought a king sized bed has jumped from 20% in 2013 to 32% this year. 2017 figures show that sales of standard doubles still make up the bulk of sales (to 47% of those questioned) with most people (41%) paying between £200 and £599 for their current bed. Surprisingly, the number of people using technology in the bedroom would appear to have declined since 2013, although the number of people checking their social media last thing at night showed a small rise from 8-9%. Checking emails has dropped from 14% to 6%; watching television just before going to sleep is down from 38% to 30%; and using laptops/tablets is down from 12% to 8%. Of those questioned in 2017, a surprisingly modest 38% said they kept and used a smartphone in the bedroom. Says Lisa Artis: “The latest report is worrying on a number of fronts – particularly the facts which show we’re getting even less sleep now, the rise in alcohol consumption as a way of getting to sleep and the increase in couples who sleep apart. “On a more positive note, we’re pleasantly surprised to find less people are using technology in the bedroom before going to sleep – which is great news. TVs, laptops and games consoles all have a significant impact on our sleeping habits and using a gadget just before bed makes it harder to switch off mentally and wind down.” Other interesting pointers to come from the 2017 report include: More than a third (35%) of Brits have suffered from sleeping problems for more than five years; a fifth (20%) for more than 10; The top three things that disturb our sleep are: worry or stress (45%), partner disturbance (25%) and noise (20%). Furthermore, more than one in 10 (13%) blame an uncomfortable bed; Unsurprisingly, more than half of respondents (55%) feel ready to face the day after a good night’s sleep; When asked what aspect of their life was most affected by lack of sleep, 53% said energy levels, 52% mood, 36% health, 23% work performance and 21% personal relationships; ›

It seems the more you earn, the more you sleep – 71% of those who earn a household income between £80,000 and £100,000 sleep on average more than six hours per night. 50% of those who earn under £10,000 sleep less than six. Continues Lisa: “We spend a third of our lives sleeping which is vital to our health and wellbeing – but almost half of Britons say stress is keeping them awake at night. “Bedtime should be a place where you can switch off, forget about the busyness of the day and relax. We can all suffer from worry and anxieties from time to time, but if it’s creating unhealthy sleeping habits, people should take action and get the peaceful night’s sleep they deserve.” The gender gap More than half of women (51%) are kept up at night due to worry and stress compared to 39% of men. Furthermore, 29% of women blame partner disturbance compared to 19% of men. Men (53%) are more likely than women (42%) to go to sleep after 11pm. The Age Gap More than a third (34%) of 25-34 year-olds listen to music to help them sleep compared to just 15% of those aged over 55. Just under a quarter (23%) of 25-34 year-olds have used a sleep tracker or sleeping app compared to just 5% of over-55s. People aged 25-34 are most likely to check their social media (17%) before settling down for the night (average 9%) while those aged 55-plus are most likely to read – 38% compared to the average 26%. The wage gap 71% of those who earn a household income of £80,001-£100,000 sleep for more than six hours on an average night, compared to 50% of those who earn under £10,000. 29% of Brits who earn less than £10,000 don’t go to sleep until after midnight. Research shows the more money people earn, the more they feel energised in the morning; almost half (49%) of those who earn £40,001£80,000 feel refreshed in the morning compared to just 35% who earn less than £10,000.

Regional variations 30% of Londoners believe that changing their bedtime would improve their sleep compared to just 19% of people from the South east 44% of people who live in Yorkshire and the Humber don’t have any problems sleeping, compared to 22% living in the East Midlands who say they’ve suffered from lack of sleep for 10 years or more. The loved-up North west share their beds with their partner every night they are at home together (79%), whilst people living in East Anglia most likely to sleep apart (16%). Yet Londoners appear to get the best quality of sleep, with 29% saying they sleep very well most nights, and 30% of people in the North West sleep quite poorly each night. Sleepers in Northern Ireland use the most technology to help them sleep, as 53% of adults use a sleep tracker or sleeping apps most nights Furthermore, people in Northern Ireland are the happiest when they wake up in the morning after having a good night’s sleep (49%). 90% of people in the South west have never used sleeping apps or trackers to help them sleep. Almost a quarter of people living in East Anglia don’t have or use any form of technology in their bedroom (24%). People living in the East Midlands suffer from stress and worry the most (49%), which in turn, affects their sleep. Men and women living in Northern Ireland drink
the most alcohol to help them sleep at night (29%), whilst people in the South east drink the least before bed (22%). Almost a quarter of people in the North east have quite a poor night’s sleep each night (24%), with 30% of them getting just five or six hours of sleep a night. People in Scotland read the most before going to sleep, compared to other regions in the UK. 35% of Scots enjoy a book before bed! 89% of people in Wales have never used a sleeping app or tracker in bed – compared to 29% of Londoners who do use them, 45% of people using them ‘most nights’ More than half of people in Wales (55%) say their energy levels have been affected by lack of sleep, with 22% of people sleeping quite poorly at night. Only 17% of people from the West Midlands get the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep a night, and almost a quarter (24%) use music to help them drift off to sleep The Sleep Council Great British Bedtime Report was conducted by Atomik Research, which questioned a sample of 5002 people via an online survey. Participants in the 2017 survey, while similarly represented, were not the same as those questioned in 2013. The exact cross tabulation of questions was asked, such as age, gender, marital status, geographical area, income etc. The survey was conducted between 27th December 2016 and 4th January 2017.

Bespoke kitchen and joinery brand, Bath Bespoke, has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology (WWT) to save money on its heating and waste disposal costs.
Bespoke business saves money on bills with wood waste heater Bath Bespoke is well known for high-end architectural joinery, bespoke kitchens and furniture throughout the UK and internationally. Its work can be found in some of the finest residences in the country as well as in Europe and most recently, Tel Aviv, Israel. The brand’s workshop is based on a farm in Winsley, a few miles south of Bath. Whilst being based in a farm building has many advantages, not least the lovely farm shop and café on site, the 324m2 workshop, situated across two floors, is freezing cold in winter months, and very expensive to heat with only infra-red or fan heaters. Director, James Etheridge, wanted to find a cost-effective heating solution, and liked the idea of a biomass heater that would also help
the business save money on waste disposal costs, especially as the business was producing around a tonne of waste each week. During his research on biomass solutions, James discovered the range of wood waste heaters from Wood Waste Technology, which are manufactured in the UK to a high quality, and have excellent reviews for reliability, with every heater ever sold still being operational today. After speaking with Kurt Cockroft, managing director at WWT, and arranging a quote and site survey, James ordered a WT10, which was installed by WWT’s experienced engineers, who managed to vent the heat generated by the heater across the two floors of the building and into the spray booth. James explains: “We’re delighted with our new wood waste heater.
We’ve gone from having a freezing cold workshop and spending thousands of pounds on waste removal, to the guys now working in just t-shirts due to the comfortable temperature in the workshop, plus we’ve drastically cut the amount of money we’re spending each month on skips. “The advice and help from the team at Wood Waste Technology has been excellent, and we’ve been really impressed with how the heater operates and how easy it is to use.” Kurt says: “We’ve been delighted to help James and the team at Bath Bespoke. Being located on an organic farm, James was initially worried about the amount of smoke that a biomass solution might emit, but we were able to allay his fears using previous client installations as examples, and, now it’s installed and running they’re delighted with the results, as the biomass heater’s operation is almost unnoticeable.” WWT offers a full range of

wood waste heaters, from small hand-fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, the company is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems – a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. 01785 250400 woodwastetechnology.com grossuk.co.uk putzmaus.co.uk bathbespoke.co.uk

2017 is set to be a big year for DAMS, the office furniture specialist, as it marks 50 years of company heritage and commitment to the office furniture industry.
Celebrating 50 years of company heritage In 1967, Barry Scott started DAMS (Dictating and Adding Machine Service) as a one man operation purely to do repairs to business machines. During the late 1960s DAMS started selling metal filing cabinets, and by the mid-1970s the company moved into new premises with a small showroom and warehouse and began selling desks and seating. There have been more than a few ups and downs over the recent past, but today DAMS is a successful, strong and growing business, uniquely placed to meet the diverse, ever-changing needs of the office furniture market. “The 50 year anniversary marks an important milestone for the company as we look back on our proud heritage as a well-respected UK manufacturer and wholesaler of office furniture,” says MD Chris Scott. “We have achieved this milestone through the hard work and dedication of all our employees over the years, with a commitment
F&JP_281.indd 72
to supplying quality office furniture products and providing unsurpassed customer service.” Today, DAMS is still a privatelyowned company, employing over 230 people and operating from three sites in Knowsley, Merseyside. In the last year, DAMS’ manufacturing operations made a record number of furniture products. The wood factory produced over 1.8 million wooden panels with the upholstery department processing over 66,000 upholstered seating and screen products. This is supported with over 125,000²ft of dedicated office furniture warehousing space with unparalleled levels of stock availability, and a distribution centre that delivered over 150,000 orders last year with multiple delivery options for dealers to select the delivery service that best suits their business needs. DAMS’ product portfolio is also more diversified than ever with
unique product offerings that are sought after for their compelling design, superior quality, and exceptional value. With a range of over 3500 stocked items including desks, seating, storage, screens, tables and our dedicated social spaces range, DAMS is a wellplaced one-stop solution. “We have come a long way since the business was started in 1967 and are very excited about our future” adds Chris Scott, “DAMS are in a strong position as one of UK’s leading full range manufacturers and suppliers of office furniture. We are financially secure and we will continue to invest to ensure we
maintain our position and expand our business in the future.” Chris continues: “During this golden year, DAMS are dedicated to having a positive impact on our employees, customers, suppliers, the environment, and also the local community which we work within. We will be marking the anniversary throughout the year by giving back through our charitable partnerships, and finding new ways in which we can engage with local communities to improve people’s lives.” “We have some big plans with a series of events planned to mark the occasion – watch this space!” DAMS.com
