Following the fillip of Ligna, the European holiday season is typically a quieter time for businesses selling machinery and equipment. What’s more, in light of the bumbling Brexit negotiations, I have heard that customers who were looking to invest in plant and equipment manufactured in Europe, are delaying signing the contracts while our politicians get to grips with Brexit. So potentially, there is a window of opportunity which has presented itself whereby companies can try and drive a better deal with suppliers looking to execute sales during this lull. I’d be intrigued to hear from readers who secure great plant and equipment deals during the next few months. In this packed issue, we have a number of features including Used Machinery, another popular part of the business, especially given the quality of some of the equipment being manufactured today. Take Schelling’s superb beam saws for instance. There is always demand for these premium options, new or refurbished. Used machinery is often the first step for many manufacturers and we feature a number of reputable dealers on a regular basis so there’s plenty to choose from. Component technology is another highly competitive sector, with suppliers seeking new solutions driven by a fast-moving marketplace as designers look for

efficiency, performance and cleaner lines. In this issue, we hear from Blum, one of the masters of fittings innovation, and take a look at its new runner, Blumotion S, a single runner for three different motion technologies. Another area which was full of innovation at Ligna was the saws and tooling sector, with new technology and solutions being offered by a number of different suppliers. We feature Whitehill, Homag, Leitz, Vollmer and Striebig (TM Machinery) this month. We also focus on Biesse UK, following its popular Inside event in Daventry in July and find out from Robbie O’Neil what was on offer this time around. With a bevy of Updates, News and Installations, this issue offers readers plenty to satisfy over the coming months. I hope you enjoy the issue.

FIRA International continues to recognise ergonomic excellence Humanscale’s new range of Trea chairs has received FIRA International’s Ergonomic Excellence Award, which recognises companies that design and manufacture ergonomicallyoutstanding products. The award identifies genuine ergonomic excellence in both domestic and workplace

furniture products, clearly distinguishing those that are outstanding from other products in the marketplace which do not meet this stringent criteria. To achieve the award, products are independently assessed by FIRA’s ergonomics department for ergonomic qualities, ergonomic design, whether the product is ergonomically and structurally fit for purpose, level of comfort and wellbeing for the user, compliance with relevant health and safety regulations and ensuring the manufacturer has high quality standards and a

good environmental policy. All five chairs in the range have been recognised and comprise one chair with a cantilever base, two chairs with a star base (one on castors and one on glides) and two square based chairs (one on castors and one on glides). The Trea range joins over 20 products with a FIRA Ergonomics Excellence Award, including mattresses, garden furniture, desks, IT accessories, task seating and storage holders. 01438 777700 info@fira.co.uk fira.co.uk/ergonomics

Gerber’s Sam Simpson retires after nearly 50 years’ service It is rare today that a person spends their entire career servicing one industry. This is something people in the industry recognise of Sam Simpson who announced his plans to retire from Gerber. Even though Sam will retire from Gerber, he will continue to serve as a consultant to the company providing insights on customer needs and trends, maintaining and strengthening key partnerships, providing oversight on software compliance, as well as serving as a special adviser to the CEO. Sam will continue to hold his position as chairman for the Sewn Products Equipment Suppliers of the Americas (SPESA), a position he was elected to in 2016. SPESA is one of the organisations he has supported throughout his career by representing Gerber on the board since 2000. Sam’s retirement comes after a long and prosperous career in the sewn products industries. He began his career at G&H Manufacturing Co – a division of Genesco – where he participated on the team that pioneered the first automated grading and marking system, including the development of the first laser cutter for apparel applications. Sam joined Gerber through the acquisition of Hughes Aircraft Company AM-1 system. Sam was integral in the expansion of Gerber’s international business activities in the European, Asian and Latin America regions. gerbertechnology.com

Whitehill Tools’ open day is well received Whitehill Tools, a leading manufacturer of spindle, window and woodworking tools, recently hosted an open day event focusing on the capabilities of automatic tool-changing machines. The recent two-day event saw over 50 new and existing customers pass through the doors to witness demonstrations on three machines and also learn about a variety of tools and expertise on offer from the Luton-based specialist. In addition to demonstrations and talks held by Whitehill Tools, the company also invited along its preferred partners to create a complete overview of the window manufacturing process. Fellow exhibitors included Accoya, Joinerysoft, Coastal Group, RJ Woodworking/Vertongen, Scott & Sargeant/Otto Martin and BWF. The event brought to light the efficiencies that can be created by using automated processes. Whitehill and its partners were able to demonstrate how windows could be made to order with virtually no set-up times, no marking out and perfect repeatability. With no minimum batch size, this creates the simplest and most cost-effective production

change, reducing waste and significantly improving customers’ productivity. Joiners who attended were amazed by how their current time-consuming production methods could be reduced so significantly. Mike Lewis of Accoya comments: “It’s good to see so many joinery companies involved in this event and bring together all the different stakeholders who are associated with making wooden windows and doors.” David Hudson, managing director of Whitehill, adds: “We were pleasantly surprised at the number of visitors who took the time to attend our open day and expressed a real interest in what was on offer. We received a number of enquiries on the

very same day, which – to us – is testament to how well the format works.” David continues: “Whitehill Tools is the only manufacturer in Britain of this kind of tooling and we’ve made major investments in our facilities here. We’ve found people like to deal with a UK manufacturer, someone they can talk to if they have any problems or any questions. “We focus our business on first-class quality and service and our USP is to undertake both small and large projects with incomparable excellence, whilst still maintaining a personable and professional service.” 01582 736881 sales@whitehill-tools.com whitehill-tools.com

Manufacturing firms reported that both their total and export order books had strengthened to multi-decade highs in June, though output growth slowed, according to the CBI’s latest Industrial Trends Survey. The survey of 464 manufacturers found that total order books climbed to the highest level since August 1988. This was underpinned by a broad-based improvement in 13 of the 17 subsectors, led by the food, drink & tobacco and chemicals sectors. Export orders also improved to a 22-year high, hitting similar peaks to those seen in 2011 and 2013. Output growth eased to the levels seen at the start of the year, on the back of slowdowns in the chemicals and mechanical engineering sectors, though remained robust historically. Firms expect a firm rise in production over the coming quarter. But pricing pressures remain strong, with manufacturers continuing to expect a sharp rise in average selling prices, in line with the level seen last month. Stock adequacy dipped marginally, remaining below average. Rain Newton-Smith, CBI chief economist, says: “Britain’s manufacturers are continuing to see demand for Made in Britain goods rise with the temperature. Total and export order books are at highs not seen for decades, and output growth remains robust. “Nevertheless, with cost pressures remaining elevated it’s no surprise to see that manufacturers continue to have high expectations for the prices they plan to charge. “To build the right future for Britain’s economy, manufacturers and workers, the Government must put the economy first as it negotiates the country’s departure from the EU. This approach will deliver a deal that supports growth and raises living standards across the UK.” In the report, 27% of manufacturers reported order books to be above normal, with just 12% saying they were below normal. This was the highest level seen in nearly 30m years, since August 1988 (+17%) 23% of firms said their export order books were above normal and 30% of businesses said the volume of output over the past three months was up. Manufacturers expect output to grow at the same robust pace in the coming quarter, with 37% predicting growth. Some 13% of firms said their present stocks of finished goods are more than adequate.

Successful Inside event for Biesse UK In July, Biesse UK once again opened its doors to those interested in discovering the latest in furniture manufacturing and woodworking technologies. The company’s impressive UK facility in Daventry, Northamptonshire is home to an exclusive and broad range of machines, and during this latest Inside event offered live demonstrations of various machines to an eager audience of manufacturers. Biesse UK’s commercial manager, Robbie O’Neill, explains the thinking behind this Inside event: “It was timed to appeal to busy people who want to keep up to date with the latest opportunities, but perhaps couldn’t afford the time to get over to Ligna in Germany recently. “As always, we have a wide range of machinery to view, much of which is being put through its paces, along with other partners, which altogether provides a useful, informative and time-effective visit.” Biesse’s impressive 48,500ft² site in Daventry attracted some 42 companies with around 90 people for a catch-up on the latest technologies and solutions that Biesse is developing for the market. Early reports following the show confirmed that in excess of £1m worth of orders were generated at the event. As Robbie explained, there was a wide range

FP286.indd 10

of the latest technology for furniture and joinery manufacturers on display, with visitors getting practical demonstrations throughout the event. Four CNC machines were on display including a Rover A SMART, a Rover S FT, a Rover A Plast and a Klever 2236 G FT. There were five edgebanding machines present, a Spark 5.3 (static), a Jade 240, an Akron 1300 and 1400 plus a Stream A. Two sanders were on show, a VIET S1 and a VIET Opera 5. In terms of panel sizing, there was an Active 400 (static) and a Selco WN 2. For those interested in drilling and boring, an OMAL 1300, a Skipper V31 and a Brema EKO 2.2 were on display too. “One of the key machines at our show was the Selco WN2 saw,” explains Robbie, “which is aimed squarely at the smaller user who probably thought he could never afford a beam saw. The Selco is ideally suited to the kind of business we regularly see which has three panel saws using up a load of space – and the WN2 will easily do the work of those three panel saws with a considerably reduced footprint.”

“Biesse is a woodworking machinery manufacturer and we’ve got plenty to offer visitors – but with experts in tooling, edging tape, finishing systems, software, finance and so forth, the Inside events provide added interest and value for the visitor.”

11

The show was also an opportunity for Biesse to promote its impressive and affordable AirForce zero glue line solution for businesses seeking to achieve a premium edgebanding finish. Biesse’s option has certainly captured the imagination of customers seeking this type of output. As Robbie remarks: “The market uptake for zero glue line technology is really amazing at the moment, I would say 50% of the edgebanding machines we sell have AirForce on them!” Robbie also cited the importance of the company’s partnerships with ancillary product and service suppliers, who regularly participate at Biesse’s Inside events. “Biesse is a woodworking machinery manufacturer and we’ve got plenty to offer visitors of course – but with experts in tooling, edging tape, finishing systems, software, finance and so forth, the Inside events provide added interest and value for the visitor.”

Despite the apparent upbeat nature of the market for machines at the moment, Robbie does say that there is degree of Brexit nerves affecting customers decision making at the moment, which inevitably causes some firms to delay planned investments. However, he does expect the year to round out well with a number of substantial orders helping to keep things on track. In terms of after-sales and service, Robbie suggests that this is one of the key reasons why customers buy from them. “Biesse is totally committed to after-sales and service. Currently, we’ve got four new engineers joining the company, taking the total to 28 employed directly by Biesse UK.” In addition, the company is starting to use sub-contractors to help maintain the company’s five-year Total Care warranty – part of that is is a service contract which naturally requires an engineer, and this work is being effectively achieved by third-party engineers. “We see machine maintenance as a key issue and we make it clear when we sell machines that looking after the investment means more up-time and more profit! “When I go around the country, I see too many machines running today that have no servicing whatsoever, until something goes wrong, then it’s a disaster. Any downtime costs a company

FP286.indd 11

money, and a good service plan such as our Total Care option makes clear business sense.” In terms of future developments, Robbie alluded to wider market opportunities, specifically in the advanced materials side of manufacturing and the framing market. With the recent Uniteam acquisition, Biesse has a strong offer for SIP and CLT panels – a market Robbie says should develop strongly in the near future – as well as a number of solutions for those manufacturing with composites market, plastic and metal. “We’ve already made one installation to a UK housebuilding business worth over €11m – and that customer has the potential for another seven lines, so that market looks certain to be an area where we can develop strongly.” In the near future, Robbie says Biesse will also be putting on an event dedicated to finishing. He says British companies are looking to manufacture more, doors for instance, and sanding and finishing is an area that it will be focusing on to enable customers to take advantage of that sort of opportunity. Biesse UK’s fully equipped training facilities, combined with a comprehensive range of machines in its Technical Centre, remains available for visitors to have demonstrations or indeed take machines on a ‘test drive’. biesse.com/uk

UPDATES

www.furnitureproduction.net

SCM’s focus on innovation The woodworking technology specialist, SCM, turns its attention to new software and a completely automated cell for the production of customised furniture. SCM embraces 2017 strengthened by a continuous and brilliant growth. 2016 ended with a turnover of €600m, up 15% compared to 2015, confirming its solid financial position with a good cash flow. An extraordinary result that has been driven by the wood sector, which has exceeded €430m in turnover, with a growth of over 15%. 2017 began with a double digit increase in orders and turnover, a further improvement on the already-good results of recent years. SCM confirms its leadership position in the technologies for woodworking processes, that today are represented by a single brand: SCM. The models inherit the distinctiveness and names of the original brands – Morbidelli for CNCs, Stefani for edgebanders, DMC for sanders, Gabbiani for beam saws, Celaschi for profiling machines and double-end tenoners, and so on – all market-leading brand names that are rooted in the history of woodworking and that from SCM DNA. The doubling of the turnover for cell systems, plants and production lines for flexible industrial productions has been particularly satisfying for SCM. They are demanding orders, with investment costs that range from one and a half million to ten million euros and the leap forward of this sector proves the maturity achieved by SCM Engineering. The Lean Cell 4.0 is a concrete application of the concepts of Industry 4.0 and mass customisation. The aim of the cell is to meet the individual needs of the client, whilst maintaining the advantages of the industrial production. The whole system is completely automated, managed by the Maestro Watch software, supported by an anthropomorphic robot fitted with a piece recognition viewer and managed by a single, not necessarily expert, operator. The Lean Cell 4.0 is extremely flexible and able to produce a wide variety of pieces, from the production of a large number of panels ready to be assembled to ‘batch one’. The cell uses standard, absolutely reliable, high-performing, easy-to-use and configure machines. The system operates automatically from the moment the order is launched and is open to every operating system. The cell is therefore able to automatically manage with a single operator, all the machining phases, starting from the standard panel to the assembly of the furniture. During Ligna 2017, the Lean Cell 4.0 was used to produce libraries that have been installed in the recently-rebuilt schools in central Italy, destroyed in the 2016 summer and autumn earthquakes. The new Maestro Suite software was presented at Ligna 2017. The most significant development

FP286.indd 12

affects Maestro Cut, the software for single-blade panel saws that is fitted with a new completely multi-touch user interface on a 21in 16:9 screen, which makes management extremely easy. Maestro Cut, available across the whole range of panel saws, can be used to manage all the machine functions. The top of the line performance is achieved with the Maestro Ottimo Cut, the new optimiser produced in collaboration with a well-known Italian university, that has developed an extraordinary heuristic algorithm. This cutting optimiser for beam saws reduces calculation times from 10 to 30% and produces cutting diagrams that reduce waste by up to 50%. This achievement places Maestro Ottimo Cut at the absolute pinnacle of its category. The CNC work centres have also seen new developments. The Maestro CNC has the new Maestro 3D function, which allows for the automatic creation of sophisticated machining programs, such as the ones required to create bas-reliefs. The Maestro CNC specialised machining operations have been augmented with the new version of Maestro Nest, that guarantees an infinite number of new nesting operations.

Maestro Setting, an optimiser for stand-alone and line drilling units, is a new development that allows for the tooling of drilling cycles and reduces the times of the machining cycle, with a significant competitive advantage for users. All SCM software is open system to allow any type of connection with third party software, for the total control of the machine functions and ensuring that operators can work simply and intuitively. SCM becomes the single brand of the wood sector. Each model maintains the distinctiveness and names of the original brands. Therefore within the group, SCM brings together the woodworking technology and CMS the technologies developed to machine composites, aluminium, plastic, wood, glass, stone and metal. As far as components are concerned – produced by the group for its own companies, for third parties and for the mechanical industry – they have been grouped in four brands: Steelmec (metal framework), Scmfonderie (cast iron), Es (electrical cabinets) and Hiteco (electrospindles and technological components). 0115 977 0044 scmgroup.com/en_GB

Simple is more efficient All Kundig Sanders are simple to operate. A machine that is simple to operate means it is easy to use. If it is easy to use then it is user friendly. If it is user friendly anyone can use the machine correctly. If used correctly not only are the best results achieved, but using the machine correctly means less mistakes. Less mistakes means better efficiency. Better efficiency means higher productivity. Higher productivity means higher profit and as we all know time is money. Maybe this is why Kündig-sanders are beloved by those who work with them. Easy to use, they help reduce errors under stress. Hesse’s impressive finishes unlock creative glass coating opportunities With clients and designers continually seeking fresh and innovative looks, Hesse Lignal has risen to the challenge with the development of its range of glass lacquers.

This trend runs throughout the entire range of living spaces, including bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms and children’s furniture. Polyurethane glass lacquers are easy and safe to work with and, after sufficient hardening time, can be secured using natural adhesives and adhesive tapes. The benefits of glass coating stand out in a number of respects, the most important of which being cost effectiveness. The necessity to outsource low volume production runs to expensive, speciality firms is an all-too common problem. Not any more – with Hesse manufacturers can produce an unparalleled range of decorative and functional surfaces at a fraction of the cost ... in-house. Furthermore, being light fast and with exceptional chemical and mechanical resistance, all Hesse glass lacquers are designed to withstand the most demanding of conditions. This means Hesse can offer surface solutions for interior areas such as kitchen splashbacks and critical areas such as shower screens. The product appeals to designers because it offers vibrant looks for glass partition walls and reverse coated table tops and furniture parts. Further innovative and individual options are also possible by using stencils and pictograms. For additional flexibility the Hesse EL additive can be used in conjunction with compatible PU products to produce customers’ very own glass coatings.

FP286.indd 16

This is an excellent option for those times when a new batch of material is not warranted by the size of the job. Two component polyurethane clear and coloured lacquers are available in any gloss level and almost all colour tones. Hesse glass lacquers are also suitable for the direct coating of metal and plastic. Hesse Lignal has utilised its partnership with Redwood Innovations to distribute this product in the UK. Both Hesse and Redwood strive to provide high-quality solutions. To find out more about the glass lacquers and to take advantage of Hesse Lignal’s wood coatings know-how, contact Redwood Innovations which is open Monday-Friday from 7.30am-4.30pm. redwoodinnovations.co.uk

“Our customers are faced with the challenge of increasingly shorter delivery times for bespoke customer orders. Our CAD|CAM solution – in my opinion – is the best solution – for the construction of furniture and interior fittings. It allows our customers to retain a level of flexibility and offer maximum quality products with short delivery times,” explains Niklas. When it comes to the new features that the latest version of woodCAD|CAM 12.0 provides, the primary focus is on user-friendliness. This has been significantly increased by a complete revision of the user interface. The new version scores particularly highly in terms of its simplified operation for completing construction tasks. The possibility of faster construction and optimal handling of fixtures means that the user can work more efficiently. Another highlight is the photorealistic representation of sales and release documents. The integrated planning tool allows the user to create impressive offer documents and design customer-specific living environments quickly and easily.

Further visualisation options, ranging from view drawings and 3D perspectives in shade mode right through to photorealistic renderings, also help in the optimal planning of new furniture. Formaldehyde Free partnership with AkzoNobel AkzoNobel, in partnership with Symphony Coatings, has launched a new Duracid Formaldehyde Free wood coatings range in the UK. The products provide a great alternative to traditional acid curing products and are safer for spray shop workers, and end customers. Akzo Nobel developed the Duracid FF range in response to the growing concern over poor air quality and the presence of airborne pathogens in homes and cities around the world, together with increasing regulation in the industry. In 2014, formaldehyde was reclassified as a Carcinogen Category 1B. As a Category 1 carcinogen, the use of formaldehyde is now regulated by the Carcinogen and Mutagen Directive in EU workplaces. The central concept of this prime directive is ‘protection of workers against risks to their health and safety, including the prevention of such risks, arising or likely to arise from exposure to carcinogens or mutagens at work’. AkzoNobel’s Duracid FF range can greatly reduce the risk to human health by removing the formaldehyde carcinogen whilst still providing a system with the same high-quality attributes as traditional acid-curing and PU alkyd coatings required in the industry, with no yellowing. It provides excellent adhesion, drying, and stacking properties together with providing simple cleaning routines for the production line and equipment. Providing clean air that we can all breathe safely means air that is free from particulate matter, pathogens, smoke and dangerous gases. It takes the desire of industry and the various partnerships between manufacturers, suppliers and customers to ensure that the products used are as safe and clean as they can be. AkzoNobel launched the Duracid FF range in the UK in partnership with Symphony Coatings at the W16 Furniture and Joinery Exhibition and Elements show in October of 2016. The range was a finalist in the Elements Award for Innovation. Carl Circus, UK distribution manager at AkzoNobel Wood Coatings, says: “Our strong

FP286.indd 20

partnership with Symphony Coatings provides us with the opportunity to really showcase the unique coating solutions we have to offer. Their scale and expertise means we can launch the Duracid FF range UK-wide and know that customers will get a first-class service and full technical support.” Daniel King, marketing manager for the Symphony Coatings Group, says: “Through our partnership with the world’s leading paint manufacturers we are able to supply the latest innovative paints and coatings. We are delighted to have been chosen to launch the revolutionary new Duracid FF range from AkzoNobel in the UK to give our customers a safer alternative. “We have had a great response to the range with many new and existing customers switching to the Duracid FF range to remove formaldehyde from their spray shop coatings and prevent formaldehyde release for end users. Often switching from traditional AC products, customers demand fast drying and durable surfaces and find the Duracid FF range gives

them the same performance with lower risk.” B2BExhibitions, a design-focused production company discovered the Duracid FF range and its benefits at the W16 show. Greg Shire, managing director at B2BExhibitions, says: “Before I heard about AkzoNobel’s formaldehyde-free paint supplied by Symphony Coatings, I had been using standard paint for the jobs that came through my business, CNC Warehouse. “During a research trip to the W16 and Elements Show in Birmingham I decided to start using the new Duracid FF range.” He adds: “After a very productive meeting with Symphony, I was completely taken with the Duracid FF paints, they sounded perfect for Storytime Beds, my new company that provides beds and bedroom furniture for children.” A set of comprehensive trials with Symphony Coatings ensued with trials going so well that B2BExhibitions put the range into full time production for all coating jobs. Greg Shire further comments: “The new Duracid FF paint looks and feels as good as, if not better, than the previous paints we’d been using. We now use it for every job that comes through the business. I am very happy with this high-performance paint and would recommend it to anyone working in the woodwork industry.” Daniel King finished by saying: “As a group we have been supplying AkzoNobel’s excellent Sikkens Wood Coatings range for over 10 years, providing full technical support and guidance. We are continually strengthening our partnership and are pleased to have extended this to include supplying and supporting their Duracid FF and Quantum PU acrylic ranges across the UK.” sikkens-wood-coatings.co.uk

Lichfield joins PWS’ Biography kitchen brand Lichfield is the latest design to join Biography, PWS’ flagship contemporary kitchen brand. Unique in the market, Lichfield was developed by PWS in a joint collaboration with its supplier and captures the success and widespread popularity of a j-pull handleless design but with an innovative fine detailing. The intricate-framed design creates a sophisticated aesthetic that retains clean, modern lines but with timeless appeal and is ideally placed to represent Style 7 from the Biography lifestyle themes. Comments Graeme Smith, senior designer at PWS: “Lichfield is perfect for designing a cleverly-crafted space that works in both modern and period architectural proportions. Warm taupe tones, rich woodgrain and gold accents tease a little tradition into the more modern elements of concrete, sleek lines and slim worktops. “To add further personality, stunning bronze metal-framed feature doors, with tinted glass, are available to create a centrepiece to display chosen pieces.” Lichfield features a solid oak or ash frame with veneered centre panel and is available exstock in rye oak, espresso, partridge grey and porcelain, as well as a primed option for PWS’ 25-strong paint-to-order palette or for retailers to

paint themselves. The collection of colours and finishes combine perfectly to create a range of interiors from light neutrals to rich blends of espresso with hints of opulence and glamour. Such is Lichfield’s versatility that whilst inherently contemporary, it

Tzero Table – the new HI-MACS tables with green credentials Franco Eccel presents ‘Tzero Table – Made from HI-MACS’, a wide range of tables, coffee tables, kitchen work surfaces and items for the bathroom made from HI-MACS Natural Acrylic Stone, and which are fully customisable in terms of size and shape. The most notable feature of Tzero tables is their green credentials. They are created from offcuts and surplus materials taken from the sites of major architectural projects, and which are then given a second life in the form of highly unique and individual pieces, with a clear craft-based approach incorporating art and design features. Of special note is the ‘fragmented’ pattern, its origin and the underlying concept of the project, as well as the adhesives in contrasting colours, which, in the manner of the Japanese art of Kintsugi, clearly highlight the fractures between the individual elements and their joints. In yellow, orange and blue, as well as red, white, grey and black, the HI-MACS pieces, assembled like Lego in a logical/geometric design, breathe life into tops and surfaces using an array of harmoniously-balanced colours. These deliberately discordant elements are supported by aesthetically clean and minimalist bases available in beech, chrome or satin metal finish, or white or black varnish. Thanks to the highly resistant nature of HI-MACS, Tzero tables may be used either outside or in contract

work. Acrylic stone is in fact highly resistant to bad weather, fire, impact and scratches, and due to the lack of pores on the surface of the material, dirt, moisture, mould and bacteria cannot gain a foothold. Makita’s latest pencil drivers have more power

The latest version of Makita’s compact but powerful 7.2V pencil drill driver and impact driver have a host of enhanced features – more rpm, more tightening torque and enhanced controls. These pencil screwdrivers weigh just over half a kilo and can be used in either pistol grip mode or as ‘in-line long handle’ powered screwdrivers. The impact driver is particularly popular for light installation work such as bathrooms or kitchens whilst also being chosen for the manufacturing and assembly of white goods and electronic devices. The new Makita TD022DSE 7.2V pencil impact driver will now run up to 2450rpm, deliver up to 3000 impacts per minute and generate 25Nm of tightening torque, which is sufficient to drive home an M8 standard bolt or machine screw. A new rotary switch conveniently

FP286.indd 24

placed on the motor body selects forward variable speed and reverse rotation. The Makita DF012DSE pencil drill driver has two speed ranges, up to 650rpm with a maximum 3.6Nm of tightening torque on high speed and on low speed up to 200rpm, that can deliver 5.6Nm of torque. With 21-plus drill settings selected by the rotating collar on the chuck housing, this ¼in hex drive drill will drive a 5mm hole in steel and 6mm in timber. This high torque accuracy is protected by two auto-stop functions. Low battery power is indicated by a lamp and when this reduces further the motor automatically stops to prevent incomplete fastening. Additionally, when the drive achieves the set torque fastening the clutch is disengaged and drive stops. makitauk.com

As the industry celebrates plywood through a dedicated exhibition hosted at the V&A Museum until November, Furniture & Joinery Production joined James Latham on a timely trip to its supplier of Poplar plywood, Garnica, located in the breathtaking La Rioja region in Spain, to discover more about this highly engineered material.

Ever since its creation in 1941 as a family sawmill in Banos de Rio Tobia, La Rioja, Spain, Garnica has always managed to use natural resources effectively to deliver the finest engineered plywood solutions. From its humble beginnings producing fruit boxes, Garnica has accelerated at a rapid pace into the production of quality plywood solutions for caravans, boats, and furniture among other applications. Thanks to its sustainable ethos of being a full solutions provider and, most recently, financial support from venture capital group, ICG, Garnica has been able to sustain and invest in five state-of-the-art factories, plus the company headquarters in central Logrono. The original factory, Banos del Rio Tobia I, is still in operation today which is testament to the seamless production model executed by Garnica. To meet demand for its plethora of plywood products, Garnica has a scrupulous and credible attitude to managing its plantations. Garnica possesses a unique know-how and a cost-effective, vertically-integrated model of production based on sustainability. Poplar is one of the most sustainable species, and its lumber is becoming increasingly popular as a replacement for tropical species because, among other features, it grows four times faster than other coniferous and tropical species. Garnica manages more than 3m m3 of poplar plantations. The use of selected clones grown in plant nurseries until final plantation ensures very homogeneous poplars, which results in

very stable wood with a magnificent yield. Only when the tree has reached its optimal growth is it logged. This process not only optimises production, but by utilising this sustainable species it also demonstrates Garnica’s commitment to the environment. Poplar was relatively unknown to countries such as France and the Netherlands, but as the trend for greener product unfolded, large distributors started sourcing European-made plywood that was lightweight and competitively priced. And this is where Garnica’s product range

27

excels – lightness, stability, surface quality and machinability. At its headquarters, a large team of technical, R&D and export specialists are on hand to ensure all markets are being served efficiently and evolving industry regulations are adhered to by improving performance properties. The trend for digitally-printed plywood veneers is just one development currently being explored and trialled by the company. In the UK, Garnica offers five product ranges available to purchase from its exclusive distributor, James Latham – a leading importer and distributor of wood-based sheet materials.

“Poplar is one of the most sustainable species, and its lumber is becoming increasingly popular as a replacement for tropical species because, among other features, it grows four times faster than other coniferous and tropical species.” These are: • Efficiency Maximum sustainability thanks to its poplar sourced from fast-growing plantations. This wood is characterised by its lightness, stability, surface quality and ease of machining; exceptional qualities that make for a tremendously versatile range. • Elegance The beauty of the product’s faces finished in natural wood makes it ideal for furniture and decoration. In addition to providing exceptional lightness and ease of machining, its sustainable plantation poplar core gives these panels great stability and surface quality. • Durable Plywood modified using an innovative treatment gives the panel core exceptional durability. Immune to fungal and insect attack, even when used outdoors and in the most demanding of weather conditions. Its lightness, surface quality and ease of machining make it tremendously versatile, easily adapting to the needs of multiple clients. • Fireshield Plywood modified by an innovative treatment that renders the entire panel exceptionally fire resistant, certified by the most demanding test, even after sanding and machining. Wide variety of formats available to suit any type of project. • G-Brick Structural sandwich panels, offer both insulation and high performance. The excellent mechanical properties and decorative finishes of the Garnica plywood panel are combined with insulating

materials such as extruded polystyrene or wood fibre. These give greater resistance, durability and sustainability than most other panels on the market. Quality is at the core of Garnica’s products and business ethos, as well as on the surface. A perfect finish is an essential component of any Garnica product. The company offers a wide range of finishes applicable to its panel, modified and specialty products, from UV and HPL through to MDO and CPL. With a passion for ‘Challenging the ordinary’, Garnica demonstrates a proactive attitude in not only innovation but also delivering the market’s immediate needs. With staycations on the rise, the caravan business is booming and, as such, the demand for plywood in these applications has never been greater. Similarly, environmentally-conscious consumers are on the rise favouring sustainably sourced materials for their furniture pieces. Looking ahead, the company is aiming to reach a production target of 400,000m3 by 2021 and an estimated yearly growth rate of 15%. Recognising people as the main driver of the business, Garnica also aims to reach 1000 employees in 2018. Through its exclusive UK distributor, James Latham, Garnica foresees the UK to be among its key markets in the future. James Latham forecasts sales of 10,000m3 within the next three years, and combined with the company’s longstanding interest in plywood, the partnership is already proving fruitful. 0116 257 3415 lathamtimber.co.uk

Alphacam macros provide a step up for Stairplan Purpose-written macros in Alphacam software have slashed the programming time of bespoke projects from a day down to an hour, for a staircase specialist.

“Every staircase we make is individual,” says Stairplan managing director, Graham Thomas. “And Alphacam takes the awkward machining we need to do, in its stride.” The Telford-based company averages around 100 staircases a week, from spacesavers through recessed, to high-end £60,000 staircases. “We never make two the same, and we don’t produce the same type in any order. But whatever we need to manufacture, we can do it with Alphacam. Without it, we simply couldn’t provide the service we do.” Many of Stairplan’s products have a standard core which is designed with specialist staircase software, but Alphacam is used to add the bespoke elements, and the macros enable the company to produce items extremely quickly. “For example, when we make bolted treads, a macro creates all the drilling, where everything has to line up with the strings. And another macro manages our special fixings. The latest macro means we get drawings and toolpaths with just one click. It cuts the programming time by 90%. Programming the internal aspect of a staircase used to take a day – now it takes an hour,” says Graham Thomas.

“We import a DXF file of the core staircase into Alphacam and the macros apply all the alterations with one click. It puts in all the connections, the drilling, the dowels, and the toolpaths.” He says automating its processes in this way with Alphacam – part of the Vero Software suite – makes long, laborious tasks very simple, and enables the stair specialist to adhere rigidly to its maximum 10-day turnaround promise, even on the most complex shapes and curved handrails. Graham Thomas began his career as a carpenter and joiner with a five-year apprenticeship, then decided his future lay in making the parts, and he focused on staircases and roofs. He started manufacturing in his garage before moving into a workshop, and then his first factory. Expansion followed, eventually moving into his current 30,000ft2 factory – which has room for further growth – where he now employs around 30 people. Customers include joiners and both domestic and commercial sectors with developers, high-

end builders, and the general public including self-build. He comments: “Our biggest single market are joiners, who appreciate the high quality we’re able to provide.” Described as ‘an engineer in wood’, Stairplan uses all the main species of timber, including pine, oak, beech, ash and walnut. Everything is now manufactured on its CNC machine tools: five 5-axis Makas and three twin-headed 5-axis and 4-axis Homags with automatic tables. “We went down the automatic table route because of the time it saves with loading, and the accuracy. It now takes us literally 20 seconds to set up a table, and it’s far more reliable. Pre-automation it could take up to 15 minutes to position the pods, and then they weren’t always in the right place,” says Graham. Another aid to accuracy is the SL-Laser system that Stairplan uses on all its CNC machine tools where every set-up is simplified using laser projection for the exact positioning and alignment of machines and workpieces. Once the components come off the machines they are thoroughly checked and assembled before being despatched around the world. “We send staircases to a wide variety of countries, including Sierra Leone, Australia, Gibraltar, France, Cyprus, and the USA,” says Graham. In conclusion, Graham Thomas says: “We can now make difficult components very quickly, and that’s because Alphacam’s engineers looked at what we needed to know and produced a bespoke automated solution for us. It’s tailored machining.” alphacam.com

Established in 1969, SH Somerscales is a family-run sawmill and timber merchant based in Keelby, Lincolnshire which puts its success down to family commitment, customer service and wise investment in machinery. This has been demonstrated by its latest significant purchase of a new Cursal TRSI high-speed automatic optimising and defecting crosscut saw supplied by JJ Smith.

SH Somerscales invests in Cursal TRSI crosscut saw SH Somerscales is a diverse operation with its work based predominantly around its hi-tech sawmill. Over the years, many historic buildings in Britain have been restored using timber supplied by Somerscales – the company provided Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London with all the green oak for the restoration including a 20m long oak beam that was used to provide support for the roof. In addition to supplying specialist timbers for renovation work, SH Somerscales also supplies material to the construction industry for timber frame housing, and general joinery. Stuart’s son Dan has worked at the company for 29 years and is now general manager. Earlier this year, he recognised a need for a new crosscutting facility in the mill. He comments: “Due to a number of factors we have seen an increased demand across the board for a range of different types of timbers including European Oak for flooring which is being sold to the UK and American market, in part helped by the current favourable US export exchange rates. Therefore it became apparent we needed to increase our crosscutting capacity. “I was aware that there are several different makes of crosscut saws available in the UK, but as we had installed a Cursal turnkey system complete with handling in 2012, which has worked extremely well from day one, we were of the mind to speak first off with their UK agent JJ Smith.” A number of detailed conversations took place with JJ Smith’s crosscutting product manager, Kevin McGlone, who carefully evaluated all the production requirements Dan had outlined.

FP286.indd 32

Cursal TRSI high-speed automatic optimising and defecting crosscut saw supplied by JJ Smith

Kevin suggested that a fully integrated Cursal TRSI crosscutting saw with automatic in-feed loading and outfeed sorting would provide them with the best solution in terms of both speed and ease of material handling. A visit to JJ Smith’s Liverpool showroom was set up for a demonstration on this model of machine along with a site visit to see two very similar Cursal crosscutting systems in full production. Dan was “very impressed” with what he saw and was “more than happy” with the recommendations Kevin had made. The result being a final specification was agreed and an order confirmed. The machine specified was with a 6.2m in-feed loading capacity, with CALS cross chain loading and separating system along with full optimisation and defecting facilities. The pusher speed is up to 200m/ min with a positioning accuracy of +/- 0.2mm. On the outfeed there was a 5m long x 400mm wide driven belt with two automatic ejectors. The saw cutting is controlled by the machine CNC with adjustable cutting time from 0.3 to 2 seconds, the vertical movement of the saw

blade is pneumatic with adjustable speed, and the Ø500mm saw blade is driven by a 7.5hp brake motor. In order to ensure a perfect square cut there is a pneumatic side alignment arm with adjustable pressure fitted before the blade and a pneumatic vertical press equipped with braking wheels with adjustable force and made from high resistance rubber fitted on the outfeed of the saw. The machine was delivered about three months ago. Dan says: “The installation procedure went very smoothly and within a matter of days the operators were fully trained and it was up and running. “Since then the Cursal saw has given us much greater flexibility, and it is especially suited for cutting the flooring which has to be

optimised, defected, crosscut and then packaged to length. We are particularly pleased with the speed of the cutting cycle coupled with excellent quality and accuracy of cut.” Kevin McGlone adds: “It has been a pleasure working with Somerscales on this project and I am delighted they are so pleased with the new Cursal saw. The fact that JJ Smith are able to provide bespoke cross cutting solutions tailored to suit individual customer requirements highlights why we are the UK’s number one machine provider for this important production sector.” 0151 548 9000 sales@jjsmith.co.uk jjsmith.co.uk

Founded in 1926, Leicestershire-based Hammonds Furniture is a family-owned business producing fitted furniture. As it continues to grow, the company has expanded its offering to include unique solutions for bedrooms, kitchens and office furniture.

Hammonds Furniture trusts Homag for future-proof machinery David Evans, head of manufacturing at Hammonds Furniture, explains: “The business has grown phenomenally over the past 90 years and this year’s turnover of £90m reflects this. Whilst our staff numbers and operation sites have advanced with the company, our existing production processes needed a solution to make them both faster and more efficient.” Finding the right CNC nesting router solution “In order to evolve our production processes, we felt it was time to replace our existing CNC router. Whilst it had served us well, it had become outdated; our goal was to combine our nesting and drilling processes into one machine to increase production accuracy and efficiency. “We made sure we took the time to thoroughly research the market before we decided on any purchases. This included checking out all the leading woodworking machinery companies. There are some great brands on the market, however, we felt that some of the machines had quirks which we weren’t so keen on. “Part of our research process included the opportunity to see Homag’s CNC routers in action at the Homag UK showroom and the Treff open day in Germany. We found this very beneficial as not only were we able to see

Homag’s routers operating in a live environment, but also we could speak to the operators and management about their capabilities. “Seeing the Homag machinery in action sold it to us and we decided to invest in a Homag Vantage 100 CNC gantry processing centre.” The Homag Vantage 100 CNC – combined nesting and drilling for accuracy “The main reason we were looking to replace our CNC router was that our current model had become dated with advances in technology. We previously used a separate machine for nesting whilst our old router finished and face routed parts. Not only did this take up unnecessary floor space, but it also doubled the production operation. “Therefore, we decided to invest in a Homag Vantage 100 CNC nesting router with push-off device. The nesting router has a feed station that allows up to 25 sheets of MDF to automatically load, which saves time and reduces manual labour. “The addition of the push-off device means completed panels are then automatically placed on to a conveyor and taken to the next processing station. As the machine is being unloaded it is already automatically preparing the next sheet.

The Vantage 100 CNC with push-off device unloads completed panels whilst preparing the next sheet

“The Homag Vantage 100 CNC gives us the added bonus of having the nesting and drilling functions in one machine which has changed the way we manufacture our products. “The Vantage 100 efficiently handles the production and routing of MDF fascias including drawer fronts and wardrobe doors. We are also able to use it for up to 25mm routing for chest tops. An additional reason we bought the machine was for the nesting of carcasses to increase the accuracy and consistency of our kitchen units.” Staggered edgebanding line halves production times “In order to handle our increasing workload, Homag’s specialists also recommended that we invest in a staggered edgebander line. This includes a Homag KAR 370 right handed machine which feeds directly into a Homag KAL 370 left handed machine, both with EVA glue. “The new edgebander line has not only taken the pressure off our existing Homag double-sided edgebander but also halved manufacturing times. Even though our old edgebander has a return device to reduce labour it could only produce one edge at a time. “An operator would then need to remove the piece from the edgebander so it could edge the other side. When we are producing 5500 to 6000 passes a day, this is an extremely slow process. Having a line with two edgebanders means both sides of the workpiece are edged during the same working pass. “Previously we would have our edgebander running up to 16 hours per day. Now we only need to run the new staggered edgebander line for six hours per day. This has not only significantly reduced production times but consequently saved greatly on costs. “The staggered line also provides a lot of versatility with edging as it gives us the ability to quickly select different tapes from one end to the other and produce more panels than before. Each edgebander has room to hold six tapes. Whilst we don’t necessarily use six different edgings, it allows

FP286.indd 36

www.furnitureproduction.net

us to pre-load the six-slot magazine stations. We can then just let the edgebanders run with minimal manual interference. “Another factor which really sold the staggered edgebander line to us was its impressive safety features. It has guarding down the whole length of the line which means the only exposure points to the employees are at the very start, when you’re feeding the panel in, and at the very end when it comes off the staggered line. The health and safety of our employees is paramount at Hammonds and the safety features of the staggered edgebander line significantly reduce the chance of any accidents happening in the workplace.” Efficient production with Homag’s training and ServiceBoard App “Homag trained our operators to use both the staggered edgebanding line and the Vantage 100 CNC on site. Furthermore, two of our production New staggered edgebanding engineers were trained at Homag UK line has halved production times for Hammonds Furniture on the software. It was not all about the particular machine we were buying at the time, it was about how that machine would continue to work and operate in the next five to 10 years and we are more than confident that our new Homag equipment will deliver,” concludes David Evans. 01332 856424 info-uk@homag.com homag.com

A new CEHISA Pro-12 edgebander from Daltons Wadkin has enabled Maton Rose Interiors to increase productivity and improve edge quality.

Maton Rose blooms with CEHISA edgebander from Daltons Wadkin Having operated a CEHISA EP-11 for some 15 years, the Northamptonshire manufacturer had no hesitation in looking to CEHISA again for a new replacement. Operating from two main factories in Wellingborough, the company prides itself in being able to offer an extensive range of services including space design, bespoke furniture making, upholstery and window fittings, all manufactured and installed by a dedicated team of craftsmen. As a relatively large panel processor, Maton Rose Interiors has built a reputation for offering tailor-made bespoke installations with short lead times. Edgebanding is key to production workflow and is often required to work up to eight hours a day. Performance and finish quality are key. Daltons Wadkin is the main distributor for CEHISA edgebanders in Great Britain. “The CEHISA Pro is proving a very popular model with larger-sized panel producers,” comments Alex Dalton, director of Daltons Wadkin. “The Pro-12 model especially, with pre-milling, twin motor corner

round unit and feed speeds up to 14m/min. Large tracer wheels allow high gloss edging to be processed complete with top and bottom radius scrapers, glue scrapers and buffing unit.” Maton Rose Interiors has had a chance to put the machine,

installed at the start of this year, through its paces. Owner, Rob Errington, is pleased with the performance to date: “While our old machine had corner rounding, the biggest advantage with the Pro-12 for us is the pre-milling,” he says. “We are sizing our panels on a beam saw so edge quality is not always perfect. “The pre-milling gives us guaranteed, quality consistency. The finished product coming off the machine is now perfect which has eliminated any post finishing by hand, and reduced fitting time on site.” CEHISA is a dedicated edgebander manufacturer producing over 1000 machines a year. The Pro forms part of an extensive range of machines including the Flexy, Compact and flagship Avant which are aimed at small- to medium-sized panel producers. Each model within the CEHISA range can be customised with pre-milling and corner rounding available from the entry level Flexy

model upwards. Set-up is quick and simple for even novice operators with well spaced operating units. For regular switching between tape thicknesses automatic setting is available. Controlled from the intuitive touch screen control (standard on all models) the operator can recall saved programs for automatic instant set-ups. Daltons Wadkin offers specialist delivery, positioning, installation and training services with all edgebander sales. Alex is keen to emphasise the value of these services. “Our team of factorytrained engineers take great pride in ensuring that each installation is completed to the highest standard. “Whether a novice user or experienced operator our team will ensure you get the most from your investment. And of course, our regionally based service engineers are on hand for the duration of the machine’s life for on-going servicing and maintenance support.” 0115 986 5201 info@daltonswadkin.com daltonswadkin.com

Edge Interiors benefits from significant savings with WWT A shopfitting company is saying goodbye to unnecessary heating and waste disposal bills after buying a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology. Edge Interiors has offered shopfitting and bespoke cabinet-making services for over 15 years from its 7000ft2 workshop in Leicestershire. Generating a substantial amount of waste wood during manufacture, the business was spending between £200 and £600 a month on skips to dispose of the wood offcuts and other waste, and around £1500 a month on running a gas boiler to keep the workshop warm during the cold months. Hearing about the benefits of purchasing a wood waste heater to reduce waste disposal costs and provide free heating, managing director of Edge Interiors, Nigel Barratt, searched the internet to find out how such an investment could help the business, and discovered the range of heaters on offer from Wood Waste Technology. Following more information and a site survey, Wood Waste Technology’s specialist engineers installed a WT15 wood waste heater into the factory earlier this year. Nigel Barratt says: “We’re so pleased we found Wood Waste Technology. On the

FP286.indd 38

day the wood waste heater was installed the workshop went from freezing cold to beautifully warm, and the team now works in shorts and T-shirts instead of layers of warm clothing. “I’m delighted that we no longer have to pay for heating or hire a skip to dispose of our waste wood, and also with the service received from Wood Waste Technology – the purchase of the wood waste heater is definitely one of the best investments we’ve ever made in our business.” Managing director of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft, says: “It’s been a pleasure helping Edge Interiors, and, with the money savings on waste disposal and heating bills, the company should get payback on its investment in less than two years.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small handfired units to larger fully-automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. 01785 250400 woodwastetechnology.com

“Cabinet Vision’s nesting function is as important to us as the electricity supply in our workshop.” Those are the words of Jake Gregory, business development manager at Burnley-based Crown Cabinets.

Cabinet Vision helps double Crown output in six months The company manufactures cabinets for around 200 kitchens and bedrooms a month, and says Cabinet Vision, from Vero Software, has been key to doubling its output within six months of installing it, and enabling it to offer a fully bespoke service. Before upgrading its CNC machinery with a Biesse flat top nesting machine, and investing in Cabinet Vision Solid Ultimate with Label-IT and Screen-To-Machine at the same time late last year, Crown produced its cabinets on a point-topoint machine. “A standard eight-to-10-cabinet kitchen used to take at least two hours…now it takes me about 15 minutes to optimise. We’re averaging eight full jobs a day, compared to four previously. And we now have the capacity to accommodate for even more customers,” says Jake Gregory. Not only has Cabinet Vision increased its output, but Jake says being able to store cabinets in its library means it can offer bespoke products to its customers quickly and cost effectively. And that library is constantly growing. It began with Jake Gregory spending an entire weekend going through the company’s price list and building everything using Cabinet Vision’s powerful Alias feature. “I created a cabinet in one size and called it made to measure…then used aliases to do four more sizes.” It provided the ideal opportunity to relaunch its entire product range, with a number of changes which it could not have done without Cabinet Vision. Jake says: “Previously, for instance, it wasn’t economical for us to have a different sink base from the standard base unit, because we had to write a new program for the point-to-point, as it wouldn’t save completed cabinets. But when we were creating the

FP286.indd 40

Cabinet Vision library we came up with a new sink base and oven housings, which can be easily adapted every time for completely bespoke products. “And as we add every cabinet we make to the library, when we’re working on a new project there’s nearly always a unit in there that is a close reference to the one we want. We simply pick it from the catalogue and easily adapt it. “We have a saying: ‘if you can draw it, we can make it.’ And the process is easier because I put all the textures in there, too. It was certainly worth the upfront investment in time to do that. It saves us a lot of time every day now.” He says it is a major plus to see on-screen exactly what is being created. “We went from the pointto-point system where we had to visualise everything mentally, including where to place the cams and pins to ensure they matched. Now, using Cabinet Vision’s master and slave system, all I need to do is to build the cabinet in the 3D space, and the system automatically figures where everything goes. “I think of it as the same as 3D printing. I build my cabinet in 3D on the computer, and Screen-ToMachine creates the necessary NC code which cuts it on the Biesse. Although Crown Cabinets has a retail branch in Burnley, the bulk of its customer base is trade, dealing with joiners and independent showrooms. “We supply assembled cabinets to the trade, but we don’t fit – we only fit for end-user customers who buy through our retail outlet,” says Jake. He describes the company’s principal operation for the trade as being the cabinet supplier of the full kitchen jigsaw. “When a showroom designs a kitchen it’ll source its worktops, doors and appliances from individual suppliers. We supply their cabinets,” he says. Three Cabinet Vision functions are

essential in helping Crown Cabinets take its products, and indeed the business, to the next level. Firstly: photo-rendering. “I recently created a 1200mm high drawer unit with three single drawers along the bottom, two sets of two drawers, and one set of three drawers. It was a completely bespoke unit. I designed it while the customer was here, and opened all the drawers to show her what all the drawer boxes would look like, then photorendered it for her,” says Jake. Secondly: labelling. Crown Cabinets has set up its system so Cabinet Vision produces labels for each panel at the same time as the NC code goes to the Biesse. The labels show the job number as a bar code, the customer name, part name, colour, size, the cabinet it belongs to, and the delivery date. Jake comments: “As we create thousands of panels a month the label system is vital to keep track of everything and differentiate

between the jobs.” Thirdly: nesting. Jake continues: “Nesting is integral…we couldn’t run the business without it now. It’s as important to us as the electricity supply in our workshop.” He says as Crown need to cut a lot of shaped units, it helps it gain maximum yield from its material, which is usually 18mm MFC board, and MDF for doors. Concluding, Jake Gregory says Cabinet Vision’s support team is always able to show the best way of implementing Crown’s new ideas. “For example, we do scoop drawer fronts on our internal drawer packs, and I wanted to change the design to a square front for an internal drawer on a wardrobe. I’d had a bit of experience with the User Created Standards (UCS), but wasn’t completely confident of how to achieve what I wanted. The support team showed me exactly how to do it.” cabinetvision.com

Winterwood, founded by Luke Winter, specialises in kitchens, bespoke handmade furniture and home refurbishments. After completing a Furniture degree and gaining some experience in the industry, Luke decided it was time to start up Winterwood and work for himself.

Felder’s service is key for Winterwood Luke can help customers with the entire project, from start to finish, including the designing, the making and the fitting and can create any CAD drawings that are required. In March 2016, Luke purchased a Felder K4 Perform and a Hammer A3-31 planer thicknesser. “I used to pay for someone else to cut wood for me, having my own machine not only saves me time but within a year it had paid for itself. I love the scoring blade on the panel saw, I do a lot of kitchens and use

a lot of melamine, it helps to keep a nice clean cut.” When asked about his planer, Luke says: “The best thing about it is the silent power cutterblock. I’ve used it for a year and have not had to change the blade once and am still getting a really clean finish which is brilliant. On those figures I will have another three years, that is one set

of blades. That is perfect really.” Service was a key part of Luke’s decision to buy machines from the Felder Group UK. He says: “I chose Felder because of the service, I don’t have time for stress or to worry about certain things, I need to worry about my business. Felder being relaxed and coming to me telling me what I needed to know,

when I needed to know it, made my life easier. I didn’t need to have that concern in the back of my mind.” He continues: “The whole service was amazing, the entire process was comforting, them making my life a bit easier freed up my time.” 01908 635000 felder-group.co.uk

by Leitz along with specific damping material mean that Leitz circular saw blades have precisely this effect. By reducing the cutting forces, the energy used by circular saw blades can be reduced. By reducing the cutting width of the blades, the material waste can be reduced and yield increased. In order for circular saw blades for specific working materials to be developed, tooth shapes and other factors are optimised. As part of its ongoing pursuit of excellence and innovation on behalf of customers, Leitz is also researching alternative tungsten carbide types and diamond to increase performance times. Leitz has divided its programme of circular saw blades into three quality levels: the Entry, the Premium and the Excellent level. The Premium range has the new laser ornaments, optimised gullets and tooth heights to reduce air turbulence and have to have

a positive effect to influence the vibration behaviour of the saw blades. The laser ornaments on the Excellent variants are filled with the new damping material and achieve optimal stability and quiet running. The new WhisperCut circular saw blade from Leitz has user-friendly and future-oriented saw technology designed into the tool. With its intelligent arrangement of various edges, the saw blade achieves perfect staggered cuts with reduced cutting forces. When used on circular saw benches and cross cut saws, even at idle speed, the noise level is dramatically reduced. Service and support at the sharp end “We hear about all sorts of different production and manufacturing issues, from a poor finish right through to noise,” says Leitz Tooling national sales manager Brian Maddox. “In many cases, the solution can be as simple as the tooling.” Leitz Tooling hears this from customers time and time again. “Looking at your true production cost per widget, product or panel

45

can really help identify what potential issues might be. If you’re changing saw blades twice a shift, having to check for clogging up or have expensive rectification issues, take a closer look at the tooling and servicing you’re using.” Leitz believes that when serviced tools leave one of its services centres, they should be ‘as new’. Each of its service processes have been optimised for original producer quality. Cutting-edge service techniques enable Leitz to give like-new performance throughout the lifetime of the tool, and reliable pick-up and delivery is tailored to the demands of the customer. Derek Statham, Leitz Tooling’s national service manager, says: “Even the best quality tool can only maintain its optimum performance if it is regularly maintained by specialists. At each of our eight UK service centres across the UK, we pride ourselves knowing that our attention to detail, in-house training and cutting-edge equipment gives the customer the best result time and time again.” Leitz uses the same machinery and programmes for the company’s tool service that it uses for its tool

From small business to industrial production, every workshop knows that the lower the vibration of circular saw blades during the cutting process, the better the cut quality and lower the noise emission. production which provides the best possible quality, giving the customer consistent tool performance. For a true comparison, Leitz suggests that businesses factor in the cost and frequency of their tooling servicing, the cost of downtime and running the business. Brian Maddox says: “The results are different for each business but customers continue to prove to us that buying cheap inferior tools is a huge drain on their businesses. With our tooling and support, they can get the right finish on the material first time, and in many cases save extraordinary amounts of money. “Companies can become fixated on the purchase price of tools, but correct, quality tools can have a positive impact on other costs. Quality service back up and monitoring are also crucial to reducing overall costs.” salesuk@leitz.org leitz-tooling.co.uk

Whitehill demonstrates commitment to industry Whitehill is continually investing in the future of the woodworking industry. Its significant advances in tooling design and production, matches the dramatic changes in woodworking machinery capability and function over the past 15 years. Whitehill designs bespoke tooling solutions using complex 3D models of every component part of the toolset in its state-of-the-art factory in Luton, thus allowing virtual assembly on the sleeve, showing the relationship of all the knives and inserts, along with access clearance for knife changing and positioning. The sophisticated and technical approach that Whitehill takes to tooling design enables it to split knives within the profile, allowing shear up and down in the same block, which provides a superior finish quality and greater depth of cut.

3D modelling coupled with latest high-tech CNC machines with robotic operation ensure accuracy and precision for each and every tool

The relative fall in price over the years of Whitehill’s constant diameter tooling with disposable carbide tips has made its tools accessible to every level of the industry, both large and small joinery shops. This allows everyone to benefit from a significant increase in productivity and a finish quality that negates the need for hand sanding; components can go straight from machine to assembly! Another advantage of this type of tooling is

that because the diameter never changes, set-ups are easily repeatable, saving time and expertise. Along with long knife-life, affordable knife replacement costs and positive knife location, Whitehill carbide tooling offers a major advantage in speeding up manufacture and significantly reducing overall production costs. 01582 736881 sales@whitehill-tools.com whitehill-tools.com

Vollmer’s operating concept for the VPulse 500 is designed around intuition. The touchscreen acts as a highly developed human-machine interface that simplifies programming and control to guarantee quick, error-free operation. With the VPulse 500 wire erosion machine, Vollmer has begun a new chapter in its long history of eroding tools. For a quarter of a century, the Biberach sharpening specialist has been developing erosion machines with designations beginning with Q. But V is now the new Q. The VPulse 500 is the successor to the QWD machines and comes as standard with technology that enables high-quality PCD-tipped tools to be manufactured at incredibly high productivity levels, whether for production or servicing. The human-machine interface has an adjustable control panel that includes a touchscreen, offers user-friendly menu navigation and intuitive operation. This means that even complex tasks can be carried out after a short training period. The PCD tools are measured and eroded in one clamping process in which simultaneous path interpolation along five CNC axes guarantees that milling cutters, drills and multi-stage tools are machined precisely. The machining process has the option to be carried out with unsupported clamping or with a counter point unit for the machining between the tool centres. The beating heart of the new

Inside the Vollmer VPulse 500 VPulse 500 is the Vpulse EDM generator technology. This newlydeveloped, high-performance generator ensures higher stock removal rates or improved surface quality. As is the case for the previous QWD machines, the eroding wire for the VPulse 500 also functions as an electrode. The wire is guided close enough to the workpiece that a spark is generated between the electrode and the workpiece and removes the material from the PCD-tipped cutting edge. Thanks to the fine eroding wire, complex geometries and the smallest inner radii that are commonplace on multi-stage tools and bell-shaped tools can be machined precisely. Workpiece storage for the VPulse 500 is available for 16, 28 and 65 workpieces. PCD tools weighing up to 25 kilograms can be machined using the Vollmer machine. Workpieces with a length of up to 500mm and a diameter of up to 320mm can be accommodated in the work envelope. 0115 949 1040 admin-uk@vollmer-group.com vollmer-group.com

For low batch, flexible production to work effectively, it is important that materials are handled as efficiently as possible. Since the launch of the Homag HPS 320 flexTec, the board cutting process has been completely revolutionised with fully automated production techniques and unlimited recuts.

Homag HPS 320 flexTec redefines the future for panel cutting This unique robotic beam saw, purposely designed for the processing of single panels, offers maximum flexibility in cutting patterns. This ensures materials are fully utilised during production. The intelligent modular design enables cutting lines to be configured according to customer specifications and customised in terms of both part flow and output. At the heart of the HPS 320 flexTec is a fully automated robot, fitted with an intelligent vacuum head, which recognises the size of the parts to be handled. The full sheet is automatically fed into the beam saw and as soon as the first cut has been made and parts are fed out of the cutting area, the robot takes over where an operator would normally be required. The parts are automatically placed back into the beam saw for cross cutting or re-cutting as required, according to the individual cutting patterns. This is true automation; taking away the need for operator intervention, maximising yield and improving efficiency in board conversion. Finally, the robot collects the

HOLZMA HPS 320 flexTec – Fully automated from batch size 1 to industrial production

individual finished part from the front machine table and places it, correctly rotated for the next machining station, onto an outfeed conveyor. An optional addition which can be applied to this conveyor is the ability for automatic labelling. This ensures that every part leaving the beam saw is easily identifiable throughout the rest of production. Sawing solution that offers the complete package From its launch, the HPS 320 has proven to be a real game changer in the market, offering a userfriendly, easy to maintain cutting The integral robot ensures zero error rates, rapid throughput and materials handled with total care

FP286.indd 54

solution that has the capacity to process up to 1500 parts per shift. This automated cutting cell sets new standards in terms of reliability and quality. The panel dividing professionals at Homag understand that human error is natural, that‘s why this powerful cutting cell has been fully optimised right down to the last detail ensuring a consistent zero error rate is delivered. The fully automatic cutting process reduces manpower requirements to a minimum, with just one machine minder needed to monitor (not operate) the entire system. One main driving factor in low batch, made to order production is optimal material yield. With the HPS 320 flexTec, this is maximised due to the flexibility in the cutting pattern layout. Waste is reduced thanks to the extra thin saw blades specifically designed for this singlepanel saw. A key advantage of the HPS 320 is its small footprint achieved mainly by its smart compact design with cleverly integrated waste removal system and in-built buffer system. The result is a high throughput in a small area, reduced maintenance costs, less tooling costs as well as lower energy requirements. By specifically designing a machine for processing single

panels, exceptional energy-saving dust extraction can be achieved via the right-angled fence. Homag’s dustEx technology directs wood dust and shavings for horizontal extraction by the use of effective air jets on the machine table. At LIGNA 2017, the HPS 320 opened further production opportunities by implementing highly intelligent software to enable the robot to unstack finished parts on up to four different lifting tables. This fundamentally reduces the manpower requirements to a minimum so that operators are able to be utilised elsewhere in production. Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director at Homag UK explains: “With everything considered, the HPS 320 flexTec delivers significant gains for any manufacturer. This cutting cell truly takes automation to the next level. “What’s more is that the HPS 320 flexTec is modular and can be used as a stand-alone cutting cell, connected to an automatic horizontal storage system or integrated into an industrial production line, therefore making it an ideal solution for both the trade and industry sectors.” 01332 856424 info-uk@homag.com homag.com

Partnerships are key in business and Lawcris Panel Products, a successful independent company in its field, has been cultivating loyal relationships with market-leading suppliers for years.

How strong partnerships foster innovation Not only a supplier of wood-based panels, Lawcris offers a full range of fixtures and fittings for both commercial and residential use. For over a decade, it has been working closely with two of the world’s most prominent manufacturers of hardware, German giants Häfele and Hettich, forming strong relationships and enabling the company to stay at the forefront of the latest trends. Steve Watson, manager of Lawcris’ showroom and shop, says: “The industry that we find ourselves in is intense, fast-paced and dynamic. We interact with our suppliers on a day-to-day basis to stay on top of trends and meet customer demands. Being able to offer the latest innovative tools and products is paramount to our success. “For example, the Quadro 4D drawer runners have flown off our shelves. Hettich have brought to market a product specifically designed for simple and precise alignment which has enormous appeal, not to mention the huge 30kg load bearing.” Steve goes on to say: “Our great relationship with Hettich enables us to secure stock of these runners, offering our customers a competitive price on a very high-quality product.” Lawcris also stocks a wide range of products from Häfele, one of the leading international companies for furniture fittings and architectural hardware. Going above and beyond the norm, Häfele’s products stand out for their ingenious use of spaces, in particular, Häfele’s range of kitchen wireworks, which have proven very popular.

Hettich’s Quadro 4D system offers tool-less intuitive height, side, tilt, and depth adjustment

Steve comments: “Products such as the swing out corner storage unit enable customers to use kitchen space to its maximum potential, with a clever automatic pull-out system creating twice as much storage and easy access. This is bang on trend for the KBB sector, where the emphasis is on maximising small spaces, as customers look for more storage in their homes.” Over the past year, Lawcris has been working closely with Dale Hardware, a British company whose name is synonymous with quality and consistency. Steve says: “When suppliers approach us with their products and claims of stardom, it’s our job to make sure these claims are correct. So, when Dale Hardware came to us with their state-ofthe-art Jigtech door fitting system, we were not only impressed by the ease of installation, which took us under five minutes – bear in mind the

We don’t just blow the dust off! With increasing pressure on manufacturers to control costs, one of the first thoughts is to buy used rather than new machines. It is important to understand the difference between a second-hand machine and a refurbished one. A second-hand internet bargain usually results in the acquisition of somebody else’s problems. The machine could well be past its best before date, the parts are no longer affordable or the machine manufacturer no longer exists and therefore spares unobtainable. Ney has a dedicated team of engineers which fully refurbishes used machines, strips them back

to their component parts and replaces all the worn bits, noisy bearings etc. Readers may ask why the company goes to so much trouble. Well the answer is simple. Firstly all Ney’s refurbished machines carry a parts and labour warranty, so it’s better to replace a worn part in the factory while the machine is in bits than to send a service engineer out two months later to do the job anyway. Secondly many of Ney’s refurbished machines go to growing or new-start companies where cash is tight and reliability is crucial to the success or failure of the business. Ney builds strong and stable relationships with its customers and as its well-

known strap line states: …Let’s Grow Together. Many of the company’s refurbished machines are actually sold before they are rebuilt, but Ney is more than happy to invite customers back to its Coventry showroom to inspect their finished handiwork and check the machine over before taking delivery. There is no reason why a properly rebuilt machine cannot give many years of service or help a company to grow without putting too much strain on the bank balance. Second-hand, refurbished or, as Ney says, pre-loved. 024 7630 8100 sales@ney.co.uk

Trendsetter reinforces global expansion with European rebrand Global manufacturer of duvets, pillows and mattress toppers, Trendsetter International (formerly Trendsetter Home Furnishings) has rebranded its Estonia operation to reflect its further expansion into new markets. Baltic Fibres Oü has been renamed Trendsetter Europe. The state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Lääne-Virumaa, Estonia was acquired by the British business in 2000 and fast became Trendsetter’s hub of technical innovation and product development. It’s a key component of the UK-owned company’s operation, which supplies cuttingedge products for many of the UK’s biggest high street names as well as its own consumer-facing retail brands. In addition to bringing Baltic Fibres Oü under the highly-recognised Trendsetter name and to support its expansion into worldwide markets, the move marks the step change in terms of major advances that have been made within the facility itself. Having recently achieved Eco Factory status, it has become a showpiece for the company’s overarching commitment to act as an ecologically responsible organisation that follows a rigorous code of ethics. This was further celebrated with Trendsetter Europe being named Estonian Environmentally

Friendly Business of the Year. Claire Watkin, managing director of Trendsetter, explains: “Our Trafford-based UK headquarters and Shanghai sourcing operations both come under the Trendsetter name and putting the Estonia facility under our well-established identity will help us to present a more unified business. “Trendsetter Europe has played a major part in Trendsetter’s notoriety as the innovator in

the category, introducing unique products to consumer markets, and bolstering customer confidence in our ranges. “Our united mission is to continue to provide unrivalled products that help consumers achieve a better night’s sleep, through sustainable manufacturing, responsible sourcing, industry leading quality, innovation and exceptional service.” trendsetterinternational.com

Soft-wood window beads and bars – a knotty problem! They have issues for joiners. They can be the cause of excessive material waste and time. Post installation maintenance is also a regular problem. It is well known that the problems of soft-wood timber window beads and bars are that they are not always straight, they can twist and invariably contain knots. Time must be spent inspecting the profiles for defects before fabrication. Some waste is inevitable, even before a cut is made. Surface preparation prior to painting is also very time consuming. Lead times for supplies can be lengthy, putting pressure on cash tied up in stocks. Post installation site maintenance visits for rotting, shrinking or weathered beads are very common. These are costly and can decimate contract profits for a joiner. A solution to these issues has been found through the development of wood composite materials. Extruded profiles in the exact shape of traditional window beads and bars are now available to joiners on a nationwide basis. When delivered to joiners these

composite profiles are straight. They are not twisted and do not contain knots. They are cut and fixed just like ordinary timber, and they are ready for painting without the need for any surface preparation. Both large and small joiners can save money when using wood composite profiles. Less material waste and reduced labour time means extra bottom line profit. An Oldham-based company has led the development of wood composites. Its Qwood profiles are made using lean manufacturing processes that ensure products are available within days of when they are needed. Less stock also means better value. The company believes that its Qwood profiles don’t just help joiners save time and money in the workshop. They do not rot, shrink or weather on site. Therefore, post installation maintenance is not an issue. In short, using wood composite window beads and bars overcomes all the issues associated with soft-wood timber profiles. 0161 627 4222 info@qwood.co.uk

September 2017 is a momentous time for John Makepeace, marking 40 years since he founded Parnham College – the educational phenomenon that inspired a generation of designers and furniture makers, influencing the world of contemporary design ever since.

Industry celebrates John Makepeace, designer and furniture maker

Parnham College

Over the course of his career John has been recognised for achievements in design and furniture making, but has shied the limelight notoriously not seeking interviews. In 1988 he received an OBE for services to furniture design. On the bestowal of this prestigious honour, John said: “It is unheard of for a furniture maker to receive an OBE, I’m of course thrilled, but it is a reflection of our work at Parnham and the team here.” Many more accolades followed over the years and in 2016 John won the Prince Philip Designers Prize in recognition of his outstanding contribution to design, in 2010 he received the Special Commendation. Adding to this, The American Furniture Society presented John with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002 and also the Society’s Award of Distinction and the first Lifetime Achievement Award from the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers.

FP286.indd 73

John’s iconic work is represented in numerous collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, the Museum fur Kunstandwerk, Frankfurt and the Arts Institute, Chicago. He now works to commission, undertaking exclusive projects each year. His unconventional approach to making furniture has been a constant throughout his career: “I have a strong rebellious streak - as an artist, designer and maker. I am constantly searching for more eloquent concepts for furniture. My objective is to achieve freer, lighter, stronger and more sculptural forms expressed through each unique commission.” Since 2000, he has been leading initiatives with the V&A to encourage more adventurous design. Longer term, he plans the sponsorship and endowment of a national educational initiative for young designers. johnmakepeacefurniture.com

New tilting brackets for motion chairs Two years ago, the Danish tilting bracket Tilter was launched at the Interzum furniture supplier trade fair in Germany. The manufacturer behind Tilter is now ready to showcase new versions of the revolutionary tilting bracket for motion chairs. When Tilter participated at Interzum for the first time in 2015, the plan was to strike up business with international chair manufacturers and suppliers. The plan was successful, and for the past two years Tilter products have been sold to manufacturers in Sweden, Germany and China among others. “Our tilting bracket has been very well-received, and the market for chairs with the first version of our bracket is thriving – particularly in China and the US,” says Michael Sjolte, managing director

of Betech, the company that manufactures the Tilter brackets. Betech’s employees specialise in rubber-based product solutions, and they have now added three additional brackets to the existing range. The new additions enable even more chairs to be equipped with Tilter brackets allowing more people to enjoy a healthier and superior sitting comfort. “When we first launched Tilter, it was a revolutionary tilting bracket with a vulcanised rubber spring system. Betech prioritises the continual improvement of our products, and we maintain our position as market leader by developing our product range. The Tilter bracket can now be used on conference chairs and dining room chairs too,” says Michael Sjolte.

SOLID OAK AND PINE JOINERY PANELS AND PRODUCTS • Mixed orders, dispatched same day • UK delivery within 2-3 working days • Free delivery for orders in excess £650

The new Tilter tilting bracket, Narrow, is one of the new product launches specifically designed for four-legged chairs. “The previous Tilter brackets are designed for stools and built with a chair base and gas lift cylinder. The new Tilter Narrow bracket, however, is a slim bracket that is mounted underneath the seat of four-legged chairs. One of the challenges during the design process was to create a bracket combined of metal and rubber that was both durable and able to tilt and move at the same time,” says Michael Sjolte. msj@betech.dk betech.dk

NEW Cabineo The connector of the future – simple, fast and strong

The NEW Cabineo time-saving furniture connector requires no edge drilling. Machining occurs solely on the surface and the connector is used with all types of CNC machines. Cabineo offers more efficient production, faster installation and a higher clamping force than the traditional cam and dowel fitting. The Cabineo fitting is inserted into the routed shape on the surface. The pre-installed screw inside the fitting is then secured into the 5mm drill hole. The speed of a cordless drill joins the workpieces together quickly and powerfully. Cover caps in various colours can be clipped onto the Cabineo within seconds.

Furniture crafts student awarded prestigious Medal for Excellence Furniture crafts student Alexander Manville has been awarded a Medal for Excellence from the City & Guilds Group in recognition of his exceptional talents. Alexander, from Cookley, was recognised for his outstanding work towards his Level 2 Furniture Making course which he completed last year at Royal Leamington Spa College under the tutelage of lecturer Jamie Ward. During his time at the college, Alexander also won a competition to design a new bench for the campus as well as the Paul Roden Memorial Trophy. City & Guilds Group has awarded Medals for Excellence for over 100 years to celebrate exceptional talent among learners, lecturers and trainers who have achieved great results by producing exceptional work – going above and beyond what is expected to achieve their goals. This year just 85 medals have been awarded from over two million students completing courses with City & Guilds worldwide every year. Alexander is now passing on this knowledge to the next generation, working as a technician at Ercall Wood Technology College in Wellington. He was presented with his Medal for Excellence by Angela Joyce, Group Principal and CEO of WCG, who said: “I am absolutely delighted to present this medal to Alexander. He has been an exceptional student, always striving and never settling for less than his best – a great attitude to

have. We wish him all the best for his future.” Alexander said: “To be awarded the Medal for Excellence is pretty amazing! I didn’t know Jamie was putting me forward for it so it was really unexpected and humbling. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and found it rewarding and challenging, and to get the medal is a real confidence boost and endorsement in your ability. I worked really hard and it has paid off! “I can’t praise Jamie and Oli Renison the technician enough – they were so encouraging and supportive throughout the course. I’m now pleased to be passing on my skills to the next generation at Ercall Wood, but in the future I would like to have my own business.” Alexander has been invited to the Lion Awards in London in June where he will be eligible for a number of awards, including the People’s Choice. Jamie Ward, course leader for furniture crafts said: “Alexander grabbed the opportunity of studying furniture making with both hands, pushing boundaries and immersing himself in the course. He had an amazing hardworking approach and gained distinctions for all of his work. “Over the last few years a number of our students have won the Medal for Excellence, so we’re really proud that Alexander has continued this success. He was a pleasure to teach and we wish him well with his career.” warwickshire.ac.uk/courses
