This week brought the welcome and long-awaited news that Made Smarter – an initiative that seeks to connect SME manufacturers with a wide-ranging array of technology and digital resources – is to be rolled out nationally.

EDITORIAL DIRECTOR John Legg Tel: 01424 834973 john@media66.net

The announcement by HM Treasury will be vastly beneficial to hundreds of thousands of manufacturers, who will have access to valuable resources and funding to guide and support them in the digitalisation of their business.

EDITOR Gemma Lochhead gemma@media66.net ADVERTISING MANAGER Lisa Williams Tel: 01424 834829 lisa@media66.net

There’s no doubt that this initiative will imbue confidence in individual manufacturers as they expand their digital skillset and approach, but its programme of expansion also signifies wider confidence and investment in UK manufacturing.

PRODUCTION James Ash studio@media66.net

Certainly, it’s a pivotal moment in time for manufacturing businesses, who are faced with significant pressure to streamline their operation, boost efficacy and upskill their workforce in order to compete on a national and international stage. If schemes such as Made Smarter can begin to chip away at the barriers preventing manufacturers from fully harnessing technological advances, it can only be a good thing.

Made Smarter to be rolled out nationally in boost to SME manufacturers Made Smarter, a programme helping SME manufacturers access technology and digital skills, is to be rolled out nationally. The Government has committed to expanding the Made Smarter Adoption Programme to all nine English regions in 2025-26 before working with Scotland, Wales, and

Northern Ireland from 2026-27. The announcement by HM Treasury, on Friday November 17th, means hundreds of thousands more SME manufacturers will get access to technology advice, leadership, and skills training, as well as grant funding for digital internships and technology projects.

Donna Edwards and Paul McClaren

The commitment, alongside plans for £4.5 billion in funding for British manufacturing, will also boost productivity, growth, and decarbonisation for SME manufacturers across the country. Launched in the North West in 2019, Made Smarter has engaged with 2,500 manufacturers and funded 334 technology projects, which are forecast to create 1,550 jobs, upskill 2,772 existing roles, and increase North West GVA by £242m. The successful blueprint has

since inspired Made Smarter adoption programmes in the North East, Yorkshire and the Humber, the West Midlands, East Midlands, and West of England. “This announcement by the Treasury clearly demonstrates that UK manufacturing matters,” says Brian Holliday, Co-Chair of the Made Smarter Commission and MD of Siemens Digital Industries. “It represents a tremendous investment boost for our makers that will enable the confidence to invest in innovation, productivity, and sustainability.” www.madesmarter.uk

Biffa and Timberpak partner to create circular recycling solution for John Lewis

Biffa, a leading UK sustainable waste management company, has joined forces with waste wood recycling company, Timberpak Ltd, to offer a circular recycling scheme for the UK’s largest employee-owned business, the John Lewis Partnership. Timberpak is one of the largest processors of recycled timber in the UK. The material it sources is used by its sister company,

EGGER (UK) Ltd, to produce carbon-negative Eurodekor Faced Chipboard for the furniture, interior design and building industries. As part of the innovative scheme, Biffa will collect and sort waste wood from John Lewis’ Milton Keynes facility and transport it to Timberpak Ltd’s site in Leeds. After being processed, it will be turned into Eurodekor Faced Chipboard at EGGER (UK) Ltd’s production site in

Northumberland. Containing over 40% recycled wood, this versatile product is used to create kitchen cabinets that will re-enter John Lewis’ supply chain, completing the closed-loop cycle. Timberpak Ltd aims to maintain wood waste within the supply chain with the guarantee that nothing goes to landfill. Thanks to Timberpak Ltd and EGGER (UK) Ltd’s commitment to make

more from wood, less virgin fibre is required to create the finished chipboard product. The combination of wood ingredients to create Eurodekor Faced Chipboard provides a carbon-negative solution as more carbon is absorbed during the growth of the wood than is required during production. www.biffa.co.uk www.egger.com

TDUK publishes comprehensive library of Timber Knowledge Sheets Timber Development UK (TDUK) has published the first set of its huge new library of Timber Knowledge Sheets – with more than 50 now available for download. The new knowledge sheets introduce and answer common questions about every aspect of working with wood, from the difference between hardwood and softwood, through to acoustic regulations, Eurocode 5 principles, embodied carbon, and sourcing timber sustainably. Developed with experts from Edinburgh Napier University, and TDUK’s unrivalled membership network of supply, manufacture and design professionals, these

knowledge sheets are the first batch of a planned 140 to help support the industry to build better with wood. “Following the merger between the Timber Trade Federation and TRADA last year, we promised to

connect the timber supply chain, lead best practice, and accelerate a low-carbon future,” says TDUK chief executive, David Hopkins. “Our Timber Knowledge Sheets are another example of us doing exactly that – and represent a big

step towards our vision of the UK as a country where timber is the number one material choice for all construction projects. “Amidst a climate emergency, changing how we build is crucial – as it represents a major portion of our carbon footprint. The material and design choices we make today will shape the future we have tomorrow. While most Timber Knowledge Sheets are members only, anyone can access and download Timber Sizes & Tolerances, Timber and Embodied Carbon, or Construction Site Timber Best Practice with a free user account. ACID and SnapDragon Monitoring forge strategic partnership Anti Copying in Design (ACID), the UK’s leading design and intellectual property (IP) advocacy organisation, and SnapDragon Monitoring, a renowned online brand protection and reputation management specialist, have forged a strategic partnership aimed at safeguarding design businesses from the perils of counterfeits and IP infringements. In today’s landscape, counterfeiting poses a significant threat to all industries, as counterfeiters continually exploit genuine brand success to produce low-quality imitations of coveted products. These counterfeit goods not only erode brand revenues and

compromise IP, but also endanger consumers due to the use of toxic materials. The collaboration between ACID and SnapDragon aims to combat these issues by offering guidance, advice, and technical monitoring to protect assets. Leveraging SnapDragon’s innovative AI platform, Swoop, SMEs can continually scour the web to detect brand threats, infringements on registered and unregistered IPRs, and counterfeit product listings. They can then take swift action to remove these threats before they damage sales, brand reputation, or customer safety. ACID complements this effort by offering

membership to the UK’s premier IP protection advocate. ACID, celebrating its 25th anniversary, is widely recognised for its strong advocacy for IP protection, offering

creators and the design community tools for protection, deterrence, and education. www.acid.uk.com www.snapdragon-ip.com

The Senator Group named Green Business of the Year The Senator Group has been named Green Business of the Year in Lancashire’s premier business awards, the BIBAs. The family-owned, independently run, global design-led business has an inspiring commitment to sustainable manufacture. The company has pledged to achieve Carbon Net Zero on its UK Manufacturing sites by 2030, has achieved zero waste to landfill, established its own recycling and remanufacturing centre, and invests in hybrid vehicles, solar panels, and Industry 4.0 machinery. Following a gruelling nine months that saw a record 600 entries reduced to 160 finalists after more than 400 hours of judging, 20 winners finally emerged at the BIBAs ceremony in the opulent surroundings of the Blackpool Tower ballroom on Friday 15th September. The winners had been put through their paces during two exhaustive rounds of judging which included

a formal interview held in May at Blackpool Football Club, followed by a visit to their respective workplaces where judges were able to soak up the organisational culture and

verify the claims made about their achievements. They collected their awards in front of an audience of more than 1,000 business leaders and

dignitaries from across the county at a spectacular annual event that’s described by many as ‘the Oscars of the Lancashire business world’. www.thesenatorgroup.com

Reports suggest UK will lose £98bn of growth by 2030 due to shortage of tradespeople A national shortage of skilled tradespeople is set to cost the UK £98bn in missed economic growth by 2030, according to new research by Kingfisher, owner of Screwfix, B&Q and TradePoint, in partnership with economics consultancy Cebr. The UK is currently facing a shortage of 166,000 tradespeople, with vacancy levels for many trades close to record highs. The shortfall is forecast to grow to 250,000 tradespeople by 2030 as

more homeowners look to improve their property’s energy efficiency by installing measures like insulation, heat pumps or solar panels. The biggest shortages are set to be among electricians, plumbing and heating installers, and carpenters/ joiners. Kingfisher has proposed measures under three areas where Government could make a meaningful difference in addressing the trade skills gap, based on its research and insight

from trade customers: • Stronger career advice in schools to encourage young people to take up a trade career • Hiring incentives to support SMEs in taking on, training and retaining apprentices • Cost of living support to ensure trade apprenticeships are financially viable for young people To help young tradespeople grow their careers and create future

industry role models, Screwfix also runs an annual Trade Apprentice competition, and funds 14 trade apprentices through its partnership with Trac. Following Kingfisher’s research findings, Screwfix is working on a campaign that will launch next year to connect its tradespeople customers with schools and colleges to inspire the next generation to consider a future in the trade. www.kingfisher.com

Screwfix Foundation celebrates its 10th anniversary Set up in 2013, The Screwfix Foundation has been donating to charities and not-for-profit organisations to help fix, repair, maintain and improve facilities for those in need. Screwfix customers, colleagues and suppliers, have raised £13m over the last 10 years, which has been donated to more than 2,500 organisations. In the last two years alone, more than half a million people have been impacted by donations from The Screwfix Foundation. Every quarter The Screwfix Foundation receives more than 1000 requests for funding. John Mewett, Trustee, shared: “If we donated much-needed funds to every request we receive, we would have to raise over £20m each year!”

To celebrate The Screwfix Foundation’s 10th anniversary, the Trustees decided to reinvigorate the charity, including its branding. Designed in-house by Spark Studio, the new branding is being launched to take on the next chapter of The Foundation’s journey. “Customers and colleagues enable us to donate around £400,000 every quarter to charities and not-for-profit organisations, no “thank you” is big enough for what they do to make this possible,” says Liz Bell, Trustee. “As we head into Christmas, we are hoping to raise more than ever before in our raffle to help local communities. I especially love how our colleagues will go the extra mile to find ways to raise money too!” www.screwfixfoundation.com

WRA welcomes launch of RPS 291 Following extensive discussions with the Environment Agency, the Wood Recyclers’ Association (WRA) has welcomed the launch of a new regulatory position statement for waste wood which it says will make it more practical to meet regulatory requirements while still ensuring compliance. RPS 291 allows, in the short term, for potentially hazardous ‘amber’ waste wood items removed from domestic premises, demolition sites or other buildings to be stored and processed as non-hazardous provided the material is tested at

least quarterly and the results are shared with the WRA. This means that producers still need to test amber material, but will no longer have to test every item or consign them as hazardous in order to achieve compliance. Importantly, those who do not share their test results with the WRA and receive a submission report will not be compliant under the RPS. Furthermore, the RPS is short term and if testing does not happen, it could be removed at any time. Other conditions of the RPS

include that material must be destined for Chapter IV biomass plants or panel board manufacture and must be moved under a waste transfer note.

The RPS will expire on 1st October 2024 and could be withdrawn before then if sampling and testing is not forthcoming. www.woodrecyclers.org

Magnet Trade report reveals significant gender pay gap

With the UK requiring a million new tradespeople to keep up with demand over the next decade, Magnet Trade has highlighted the importance of closing the gender pay gap as the demand for women in the self-employed trade industry increases. Magnet Trade analysed ONS data, and information from The Association of Independent Professionals and the SelfEmployed (IPSE) to find out where the UK stands when it comes to the

gender pay gap in self-employed trade professions. It discovered that there are only 2,488 women joiners, which equates to 1.03% of the workforce. The self-employed trade also ranks third for having the highest gender pay gap. Joiners have the third largest gender pay gap equating to a loss of £16,093 a year for selfemployed female joiners compared to males in the same trade. When looking at the hourly rate for joiners, men earn on average

£25.73 whereas women in the same position on average only earn £17.99 per hour. In a working lifetime, men will work for 38.6 years, whilst women will work 34.2 years. In this time of working, men will earn £785,850 more than women. This equates to £2,065,785 for male joiners and £1,279,935 for female joiners in a working lifetime. Magnet Trade’s data found that, with women earning 43% less than men in self-employed jobs,

estimates show that, for trade jobs, men charge £7 more an hour on average than women. In terms of the hourly rate, on average, this is £23 for self-employed men compared to £16 for women. Across all industry trades, men earn an average of £700K more across a working lifetime compared to women. Find the full report here: www. magnettrade.co.uk/trades-genderpay-gap-report/

Axminster Tools honoured with King’s Award Corporate member Axminster Tools has been honoured with the first ever King’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category. The Devon-based woodworking tools and machinery retailer and manufacturer is one of 148 organisations to be recognised with the prestigious award. Last year Axminster Tools reached 50 years of trading. While celebrating their past, the company invested heavily in their future. Axminster Tools manufacture an increasing number of own branded products in its stateof-the-art manufacturing facility in Axminster, Devon, including the award winning UJK Parf MKII Guide System.

Derbyshire furniture manufacturer enters into administration Long Eaton-based Acclaim Upholstery Company Ltd has entered into administration following a difficult trading period. Inflationary pressure saw the bespoke furniture manufacturer struggle with rising costs and the impact of finance repayments, alongside a drop in sales. Martin Buttriss and Carolynn Best at Begbies Traynor in Leicester have been appointed as administrators, and all 128 employees of the business have been made redundant.

An important update for companies still certified against the 2013 version of the PEFC Chain of Custody standard has been released. After 31st December 2023, certificates issued against the 2013 version of PEFC ST 2002 and PEFC ST 2001 will no longer be valid. This is an extension from the previously announced date of 14th November 2023, to enable all certification bodies to complete the issuance of 2020 certificates to their certified companies. There will be no further extensions and therefore, from 1st January 2024 any remaining 2013 certificates will automatically lose their validity and will be shown as expired on the PEFC database. To be certified against the 2020 versions of the PEFC Chain of

Custody and PEFC Trademarks standards, companies need to adapt their chain of custody management system and procedures to the revised requirements. To use the PEFC label, all companies who pass the transition audit to the 2020 version will need to sign a new, mandatory PEFC trademark usage contract, in accordance with the PEFC Trademarks standard. Once your trademarks usage contract is signed, you can request access to the PEFC Label Generator, to start producing PEFC trademarks in line with the 2020 PEFC Trademarks standard and request for any exceptional use as mentioned under PEFC ST 2001:2020 8.4. technical@pefc.org

Enhancing efficiency at Jacksons Timber Ltd with the Stromab Automatic Crosscut Saw

“For Jacksons Timber, the Stromab saw is more than just a machine; it’s a catalyst for progress, not only enhancing efficiency but paving the way for precision, productivity and growth”

With branches at Whitehaven, Workington and Barrow, Jacksons Timber is a leading independent timber merchant based in Cumbria. As well as operating as a dedicated roof truss and joist engineering plant, the company stocks an extensive range of timber and joinery supplies, and over many years has earned an excellent reputation for providing customers with quality products and service. Stromab MX automatic crosscut saw with 14m infeed capacity After the recent delivery and successful installation of a new Stromab MX automatic crosscut saw from JJ Smith, Jacksons has already seen a significant rise in production thanks to the impressive 14m infeed cutting capacity, as well as the latest generation of optimisation software. Prior to the installation of the new Stromab automatic saw, the company had been using traditional manual cutting methods that were leading to inconsistencies and excessive amounts of waste offcuts. Additionally, manually operated crosscut saws are very labour intensive and the poor productivity levels they create can cause production bottlenecks further down the line. To address these challenges and make way for an increase in production, company director Daniel Mossop contacted JJ Smith for help and advice. Following detailed discussions with its crosscutting sales manager, Kevin McGlone, it was clear that the Stromab MX automatic crosscut saw with a 14m infeed capacity would be the best solution.

INSTALLATIONS 23

One of the Stromab’s key features lies in its on-board programming and optimisation capabilities. Operators now have the flexibility to either input cutting lists directly onto the saw or download cutting lists from the office via JJ Smith’s Design2Saw pre-optimisation/ conversion software. This seamless integration has streamlined processes, reduced inconsistencies and elevated product quality. Precise cutting capabilities Advanced technology ensures accurate and consistent cuts with minimal human intervention, which significantly reduces waste. The heavy-duty automatic push feed system allows for continuous operation, slashing lead times and allowing faster order fulfilment, all of which help Jacksons provide its customers with the best possible service. Moreover, the company has been able to optimise its workforce by redirecting labour from manual cutting tasks to value-added ones, such as quality control and packaging, thus amplifying overall productivity.

“The installation of the Stromab automatic crosscut saw has been a game-changer for us,” says Daniel. “The team at JJ Smith took the time to understand our needs and provided us with the necessary machinery capable of handling our requirements, with a 14m infeed capacity which has revolutionised operations.” A catalyst for progress “For Jacksons Timber, the Stromab saw is more than just a machine; it’s a catalyst for progress, not only enhancing efficiency but paving the way for precision, productivity and growth,” says Daniel. Kevin McGlone concludes: “With over 300 successful installations to date it’s no surprise that the Stromab range of automatic crosscut saws is the number one choice for timber suppliers, joinery, furniture timber frame housing and garden product manufacturers throughout the UK and Ireland.” Most Stromab models are available for demonstration at JJ Smith’s Liverpool showrooms and are available for quick delivery. Jason Baker Design automates its finishing process with Makor Start One from HOMAG UK Edinburgh-based architectural interior manufacturers and one of Scotland’s largest independent joinery manufacturers, Jason Baker Design, has recently purchased a Makor Start One spraying machine from HOMAG UK. The investment was made to increase the company’s throughput, improve the quality of its finish, and enhance the health and safety of its employees. “We design and manufacture a wide variety of joinery products for the commercial market,” explains Jason Baker, MD at Jason Baker Design. “Like most manufacturers in our industry, we employ a French polisher trained in all elements of finishing – from shellac-based French

Start One established it as the front runner for our 5000ft2 factory. HOMAG then arranged for us to visit a manufacturer based in Huddersfield that was already operating this particular Makor spraying machine. “Seeing the Start One in action was really useful, particularly as we were able to talk to the operator who used the machine on a daily basis. With what we learned from this visit it quickly became apparent that the Makor Start One was a good fit for our business and so we placed the order with HOMAG UK. “It was delivered in May this year and installed by HOMAG’s partner in Scotland, AWMS, who did a great job. Working in our spray shop, he would apply a wide variety of finishes by hand across a huge range of products. “With the consistent growth of the business, we recognised that we probably needed at least one or two more polishers to keep up with demand, but we didn’t have the space for these additional craftsmen. Consequently, we decided to evaluate automating some of our finishing processes by introducing a spraying machine. “Initial research suggested there were three main suppliers in the market, one of which was HOMAG UK. We have invested heavily in HOMAG woodworking machinery over the past five years and have found the quality of the equipment and the aftersales support first class. Accordingly, our first port of call was to speak to HOMAG before reaching out to the other two companies.”

This interest-free loan facility is aimed at SMEs wanting to improve their digital capabilities and/or processes. Our goal, to automate the company’s finishing process, was a very good case study for them so once we’d completed the application, it was a quick and efficient procedure to obtain the funding. “We borrowed one hundred per cent of the value of the machine at zero per cent over five years. Business benefits already clear to see “When we embarked on this project, we had three clear objectives we wanted to achieve with the automated spraying solution: • Increase the capacity of our finishing process without additional employees • Improve the finish quality of all our products • Enhance the health and safety of our employees “The Makor Start One has delivered on every front. The speed and efficiency of the Start One is truly amazing, yet we have not had to employ more staff. Despite the increase in throughput, the quality of finish is second to none because the spraying area is a controllable enclosed environment. Being an enclosed area means our staff are not subjected to lacquer or solvent fumes, making it a much safer and healthier work environment. “Although it is early days, results so far indicate that the machine is on target to pay for itself within three years which is excellent. This will help us grow the business from its current turnover of £1.5m as we now can meet the everincreasing demand for our products. “Having the service and support from HOMAG UK takes a weight off our shoulders. They are a great partner to work with; all the people are friendly, professional and eager to help, and the machinery is technically advanced and totally reliable,” concludes Jason. DUST EXTRACTION & WOOD WASTE MANAGEMENT

Bespoke kitchen manufacturer keeps facilities clean with Modesta

Mark Gibson (L) and Stuart Hutchinson (R), Ultima Furniture

With over 6000 kitchen cabinets sold every week, Ultima Furniture is one of the biggest online kitchen retailers in the UK. Over the last couple of years, the company has opened several new production facilities, which are kept clean with the help of Modesta filters. Here, Mark Gibson and Stuart Hutchinson from the Ultima team speak on their revolutionary business model, avoiding downtime and the importance of dust extraction.

Innovative online-only strategy Starting out building kitchens in their garage in 1983, Ultima Furniture founders Alf and Clare Ellis have grown their business steadily over the past two decades. The couple still plays an active role in the company, just like their son and daughter, but they’ve also expanded their team to 550 colleagues. Boasting the UK’s most advanced automated cabinet assembly line, Ultima can manufacture

“Based on the demand in the factory, the fans adjust themselves to cope with the desired capacity, ensuring low energy consumption” and home deliver a bespoke kitchen in a couple of weeks. With its customer brand – diykitchens.com – anyone can design their dream kitchen thanks to an online planning tool. The online-only retailer has a team of remotebased experts at the ready to help clients make sure that what they’ve designed is the right choice and answer any questions they might have. After the design is finalised, the kitchen is delivered pre-assembled and fitted as much as possible within less than six weeks. Maximum customisation “What our customers really appreciate is that they can design their kitchen exactly as they want it,’” says design and marketing director, Stuart Hutchinson. “They can request samples of materials or go to one of our showrooms to see our product with their own eyes. If they have a specific colour in mind, they can even send over a sample and we’ll provide the right colour match.”

COVER STORY

DUST EXTRACTION & WOODWASTE MANAGEMENT 27

Crucial dust extraction Over the last couple of years, Ultima has opened several new production facilities, growing from one location in 2011 to six in 2024, spread out over South Kirkby, Sherburn, Grimethorpe and Dewsbury. “Some of them manufacture cabinets, others specialise in spray painting,” explains production manager, Mark Gibson. “Overall, we produce around 6000 cabinets on a weekly basis.” And that’s where dust extraction comes in, he quickly adds. “Without proper dust extraction, we can’t do anything.” That’s exactly why CEO Alf Ellis opted for a Modesta filter back in 2010. He chose the Dutch-based family company because of several technological advantages, but also because of the quick installation and repair service. “Since that first filter in 2010, we’ve added Modesta systems to every new facility we’ve opened, which means we now have six Modesta filters on five production sites,” says Stuart.

Smart modularity So why Modesta? “Their filters are modular, which ensures energy efficiency,” explains Stuart. “Instead of using one big motor, they use several smaller ones. Based on the demand in the factory, the fans adjust themselves to cope with the desired capacity, ensuring low energy consumption.” Another advantage of the cascading fans is that if one of them has a problem, the other ones can keep running. That means the system never shuts off, which is crucial for any furniture manufacturer. “Our filters run 16 hours a day and we never experience any downtime,” confirms Mark. “And when we do have any difficulties, they offer great service. As soon as I contact field technician, Johan, he’s online right away.” Modesta has a real-time connection with its clients, allowing it to see what’s going on with the filter system and fix any problem quickly and efficiently. Lastly, Modesta boasts a low air-to-cloth ratio, which means the filter sleeves live much longer. By keeping the pressure on the filter bags as low as possible, the filter’s performance remains constant and doesn’t go down because of sleeves getting clogged. “The first Modesta solution we bought 10 years ago is still working perfectly with the same filter bag after having run over 30,000 hours,” says Mark. Stuart summarises: “The initial investment might be a bit higher than their competitors, but the value is in the long term. With reduced maintenance, lower running costs and reduced downtime, Modesta is the only option for us.” www.modestafilters.com www.ultimafurniture.co.uk

Ecogate delivers substantial savings for JTC

Extractly installed a total of nine PowerMASTER™ VSD units at JTC – each unit delivers precise control over the power consumed by each individual main fan

Extractly Ltd has retro-fitted Ecogate® ‘on-demand’ control technology across an extensive dust extraction system serving JTC Furniture Group’s manufacturing plant. Over the last four decades, JTC Furniture has grown to become one of the UK’s leading high-volume manufacturers and suppliers of fitted kitchen, bedroom and bathroom furniture for the Local Authority and Housing Association property sector, as well as for private property developers, student accommodation and MoD facilities. Established in 1986, in Dundee, Scotland, the company now operates from two sites in the city, as well as a third satellite office in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Since 1995, the company’s headquarters, warehousing, distribution and

mainstream manufacturing facility have been housed in the historic Camperdown Works; formerly Timex Corporation’s flagship factory. JTC Furniture produces hundreds of thousands of MDF/MFC laminated cabinets, panels and worktops every year, for both new-build and refurbishment projects, as well as undertaking specialist manufacturing for specific applications in education, healthcare and washrooms. Powered by a total of nine main fans, consuming over 300kW of electricity per hour, the dust extraction system at Camperdown can extract vast volumes of dust-laden air from the workplace. However, delivering this powerful capability comes at a high cost and, with energy costs rising to an all-time high, JTC’s senior

David Verrall checking stats and energy savings made to date at one of the PowerMASTER™ VSD units installed by Extractly Ltd

maintenance engineer, David Verrall, was asked to investigate the feasibility of installing Ecogate technology and the potential impact that it could have on future energy usage. “JTC’s electricity bills were eye-wateringly high and, because the company’s focus is on volume production, machinery utilisation is very high,” explains Jake Oldfield, Extractly’s sales director. Ecogate’s On-Demand technology is capable of achieving substantial energy savings when machinery utilisation varies throughout the working day, but respectable savings can also be achieved when machines effectively appear to be working non-stop. “Even though key equipment was operating virtually continuously, findings from our energy appraisal survey at Camperdown Works still indicated that worthwhile savings could be made by capitalising on the reduced demand for extraction during operators’ breaks and loading and unloading operations and, significantly, it showed that some equipment only needed extraction for minimal periods during the working day.” In addition, although constantly powered up, some of the production lines at JTC are not

DUST EXTRACTION & WOODWASTE MANAGEMENT 29

continuously creating waste dust, and so don’t require continuous extraction. In the vast majority of installations, Ecogate® technology controls the demand for extraction based on a machine’s on or off status, but the technology is also capable of determining extraction requirements on a production line using a range of alternative ‘proof of cut/dust’ monitoring devices. “Installing the Ecogate system at JTC has had a huge effect,” says David Verrall. “Just a few weeks after the system was commissioned, evidence of the promised financial savings were clear to see, but noise levels in the factory are also markedly lower, and the amount of airborne dust in the factory has also been reduced significantly.” At JTC, Extractly installed two of the latest Ecogate greenBOX® Nxt controllers; one monitoring demand and controlling extraction provided by three of the main fans, and the second doing the same for the other six fans. These highly intelligent controllers can efficiently control the operation of an extraction system with multiple main fans and up to 72 individual workstations. The greenBOX® controllers continuously monitor extraction demand across the factory and, in real-time, determine the exact amount of airflow each fan must provide to fulfil that demand. As well as controlling the extraction system, real-time performance data shows how much electricity the fan motor is consuming, confirms filter pressure, air volume and air velocity at dampers, branches, or for the entire system and, to ensure employees’ safety, minimal airflow is managed across the entire

ductwork system to reduce the risk of fire or explosion. Machine utilisation is monitored across the factory and, from data received, the greenBOX® controllers determine the optimum speed for each of the nine fans, and the motor speed for each fan is in turn controlled by an individual Ecogate® PowerMaster Variable Speed Drive Unit (VSD). The PowerMaster VSDs are individually sized to match the motor power for each of the nine fans, which range from 45kW to 75kW. Ecogate’s greenBOX® Nxt has an industrial PC onboard, with a Linux-based operating system, and a built-in web server provides remote access for fast, automated updates of both Ecogate® and system software. In addition, the greenBOX® Nxt can automatically stop and start the extraction system at both ends of the

working day – system performance is checked at start-up, and confirmed by text or email, and the greenBOX® Nxt will message again at the end of the day to confirm successful system shutdown. “Extractly’s engineers did an excellent job; the installation took just a week and a half to complete,” concludes David Verrall. Based on the savings achieved so far, we expect to see a return on our investment in around 20 months and, as well as the financial savings, we’ll also be reducing our carbon footprint by around 20 tonnes of CO2 per year. Just from our experience here at JTC, I would say installing an Ecogate system could be a game-changer for any woodworking business.” 01924 520462 info@extractly.co.uk www.extractly.co.uk

Quality Pods Wales – a sustainability success story In a quiet corner of Wales, a remarkable transformation has taken place at Quality Pods Wales (www.qualitypodswales.uk) – a leading manufacturer of glamping pods. Faced with the challenge of managing its wood waste, the company found a sustainable solution, not only benefiting the business but also contributing to environmental conservation. Quality Pods Wales had been struggling with the disposal of their wood waste, a common issue faced by many manufacturing businesses. Despite its best efforts, no supplier was willing to assist, leaving the company with no choice but to dispose of the offcuts into landfill, contributing to environmental pollution. However, in July 2022, the company’s situation changed when it reached out to IWM (International Woodworking Machines). IWM’s visit to Quality Pods Wales marked the beginning of a transformative journey. Instead of sending wood waste to landfills, Quality Pods Wales and IWM devised an ingenious method. The offcuts are now shredded, mixed with sawdust, and compressed into renewable briquettes, thus significantly reducing the environmental impact. By repurposing its waste, Quality Pods Wales has taken a significant step toward a more sustainable future. What makes this achievement even more commendable is Quality Pods Wales’ commitment to becoming self-sufficient in its energy needs. The company is now exploring the possibility of integrating an industrial heater powered by its renewable briquettes.

Ranheat’s new seven-axis 100-tonne brake press being installed

Continual investment in machinery and automation to maintain lead in UK market Chris Franklin, MD at Ranheat Engineering Ltd – a leading UK manufacturer of wood combustion equipment – continues his series of exclusive articles for Furniture and Joinery Production. This issue, he looks at how continued investment in machinery is needed to maintain competitiveness within supplying heating and waste management in the UK woodworking Industry. Since 1990, Ranheat’s aim has been to design, manufacture, install and maintain specialist equipment to serve the UK woodworking industry. Since leaving the EU, the UK has adopted new standards, for example the CE mark must be replaced by the UKCA mark for machinery sold in the UK. The following is taken from the HSE. gov.uk site: “In most cases, you must apply the UKCA marking to the product itself or to the packaging. “The UKCA marking must be clearly visible, legible and indelible when you affix it to the product. It may sometimes be placed on the manuals or on other supporting literature, but this will depend on the specific regulations that apply to the product. “UKCA markings must only be placed on a product by you as the manufacturer, your authorised representative (where permitted in the relevant legislation), or if you are marketing the products under your name or trademark. When affixing the UKCA marking, you take

full responsibility for conformity with the requirements of the relevant UK legislation. “You must not place any marking, sign or inscription which is likely to mislead any other person as to the meaning or form of the UKCA marking or affix any marking which would impair the visibility, legibility and meaning of the UKCA marking. “The UKCA marking cannot be placed on products unless there is a specific requirement to do so in the legislation. “A product may have additional markings and marks, like the CE marking, if they: • fulfil a different function from that of the UKCA marking • are not likely to cause confusion with the UKCA marking • do not reduce the legibility and visibility of the UKCA marking. “Both the CE and UKCA markings can be placed on a product so long as neither prevents the other being clearly seen and the requirements of both GB and EU legislation are met.” Ranheat has its origins in Denmark in the city of Randers on the mainland of Jutland. In 1990 the manufacturing was transferred to Ranheat Engineering in Northamptonshire. Since then, the company has moved twice, both times to larger premises. Ranheat have been at their current location for

almost 20 years, but continue to invest in new machinery and the latest in CNC technology. Their latest investment is in a 100-tonne, 3m, seven-axis brake press. What works in Scandinavia, Germany, France, and the rest of Europe is not necessarily the best for the UK climate and regulations concerning the use of biomass as a fuel. The government’s Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive led to an influx of foreign boilers coming to the UK, all of which bore the CE mark. However, there were existing regulations in the UK that required permits and permissions to be in place to legally OPERATE the equipment. The presence of the CE mark or indeed the new UKCA mark does not guarantee the plant is legal to use unless all of the other criteria are met. You are still legally required to obtain planning, chimney height approval and permits to enable you to legally burn wood-waste. This can be in the form of an exemption from the EA for up to 50kgs per hour, or a permit for a SWIP or a full part B permit. Ranheat are on hand to give free assistance with obtaining these permits and permissions. 36 DUST EXTRACTION & WOODWASTE MANAGEMENT

Introducing the iVision range of dust extraction units As a leading machinery supplier, Daltons Wadkin is well versed in solving customers’ production issues. A growing area of concern for many operators of industrial woodworking machinery is dust exposure in the workplace. Enter the iVision range of extraction units. Developed specifically for highly effective dust capture, they offer a wide range of open and closed sided filter options for working with softwoods, hardwoods and sanding dust. At first glance, wood dust may seem benign, but prolonged exposure to these tiny particles can lead to a variety of health complications. Inhalation of wood dust has been linked to respiratory diseases such as asthma, bronchitis,

inhaled. Beyond the immediate health threats, a thick layer of accumulated dust can also become a fire hazard, especially in the presence of sparks or high temperatures. For traditional woodworking machinery where a high-volume low-pressure rate is required, the iVision Wood 180 and 360 models feature high flow centrifugal fans delivering up to 4300 m³/ h and can be linked with existing machinery for auto start stop function. When dealing with dust capture from a CNC router, a low-volume-high-pressure system is preferred. Designed specifically for use with CNC machines, the iVision Flat Table delivers up to 320 mbar of static pressure with a flow

and nasal cancer. Certain wood types, like oak and beech, have even been classified as carcinogenic to humans when their dust is

rate of 550 m3/ hour. A large overhead ariel arm supports the flexi hose above the CNC machine to allow unrestricted movement around the bed.

A touch screen control system gives a clear visual indicator of the filter performance

Filter monitoring is key to any system. With this is mind, iVision have introduced a touch screen control system that gives a clear visual indicator of the filter performance. Taking it a step further for true industry 4.0 connectivity, each iVision unit can be centrally monitored from any office PC with a web interface, allowing workshop managers to remotely monitor the performance. 0115 986 5201 info@daltonswadkin.com www.daltonswadkin.com

38 DUST EXTRACTION & WOODWASTE MANAGEMENT

“Buying a wood waste heater is the easiest investment decision we’ve ever made!” A West Midlands joinery company has purchased a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to help lower the business’s carbon footprint and save money in the process. Midland Mouldings is a family business, with three generations of experience in the industry. The business has been established since 1991, supplying joinery services and timber mouldings from its manufacturing base in Brownhills, near Walsall. When Midlands Mouldings’ existing wood waste heater needed to be replaced, the company started looking at the heaters produced in the UK by Wood Waste Technology, and contacted the business to find out more. “At Midland Mouldings, we’re committed to being as sustainable as possible with everything that we do,” explains MD of Midlands Mouldings, Tom Williams. “That’s why we’ve enjoyed the positive environmental benefits of owning a wood waste heater, to recycle all our wood offcuts and create heat for the factory. We’d heard great things about Wood Waste Technology’s heaters, so rather than repurchasing the same machine from the original supplier, we ordered a WT10 instead. “We’ve been delighted with the new heater. As it is newer, it’s so much more efficient than our older model. The new heater can heat the whole factory, whereas there were always a few cold patches that the heat didn’t reach with the old heater. It’s now a much nicer temperature for our team of ten people to work in. “Whilst our main driver for the purchase was to be more self-sufficient and sustainable, we can’t ignore the huge cost advantages that a wood waste heater gives. There is no other use for the offcuts, so, without the wood waste heater, they would simply have to be disposed of. This way, they have a positive use, to heat the factory. Buying a wood waste heater is the easiest investment decision we’ve ever made, with a great payback. “We couldn’t be happier with our experience of using Wood Waste Technology. The wood waste heater does everything promised, but it’s not just

about the product. From the team in the office to the engineers who installed it, everyone has been so friendly and helpful, making the whole experience an absolute pleasure.” MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft adds: “From our view, once a business has experienced the benefits of a wood waste heater, they will never want to be without one again! And especially in the current economic climate when businesses are trying to reduce operating costs and expenditure. We’re thrilled that the team at Midland Mouldings is so pleased with the new heater.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many

companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares “up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers”. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision-engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various sizes and specifications. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com www.grossuk.co.uk

SURFACING & DECORATIVE PANELS

Kronospan’s relentless approach to sustainable design

SURFACING & DECORATIVE PANELS 41

Kronospan was founded in 1897 as a sawmill in Lungotz, Austria. Since then, the business has grown to 39 sites in 20 countries, employing over 14,000 people, and is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of woodbased panels. Kronospan’s products are trusted across markets in over 120 countries, in sectors ranging from furniture manufacturing and construction to trade and DIY retail. Its rich history and market success have grown from its commitment to innovation and technological development and driving continuous improvements in the quality and sustainability of its products. Kronospan’s innovation is more than just the boards it makes, it’s also the decors and designs of the melamine-faced boards under the Kronodesign brand. The latest and emerging trends inspire the company’s design teams to ensure that every customer is catered for, from the classical elegance of woodgrains through to contemporary bold colours and metallics.

In the UK, Kronospan has been manufacturing in Chirk, North Wales for over 50 years. Its Chirk site manufactures particle board, medium density fibreboard (MDF), melamine-faced boards and laminate flooring. Kronospan is also proud to claim that it is the UK’s only domestic manufacturer of laminate flooring. Kronospan’s products manufactured in the UK are made using timber sourced in the UK, keeping its carbon footprint as low as possible. The company has also pioneered the use of recycled timber in its particleboard, achieving industry-leading levels of recycled content, and putting itself forward as the sustainable choice for environmentally conscious consumers. www.kronospan.com

The latest from Superfici for an eco-sustainable, trendy finish Surface treatments are playing an increasingly crucial role in elevating the aesthetic and practical quality of a piece of furniture, a fixture or a wooden floor. This is why SCM was an early pioneer in this sphere, offering an extensive range of products and services for machining wood – including its exclusive solutions and skills in terms of Superfici finishing – as well as its capability for designing, developing and manufacturing complete machines and plants for painting. Compact XL Sprayer One sprayer worth giving a special mention to is the new compact XL which, starting from the solid bases of Superfici compact, offers high levels of production capacity and reflects the company’s values, increasingly focused on saving energy.

Compact XL Sprayer

Compact XL Sprayer

Compact XL Sprayer

Some of the key advantages include environmental care and a considerable reduction in consumption. This is thanks to a more efficient paint recovery system – which helps reduce waste by maximising productivity – and an advanced recycling of air volume, which optimises performance and can be saved in formulas that can be called up for different spraying cycles. All this “spiced up” by a completely new design. Compact XL also facilitates fast, maximumlevel cleaning thanks to the dual filtering system and patented on-demand filter – an innovative, fast cleaning system for the paint recovery unit and ventilation conditions that are always excellent in the spraying environment. The new Superfici solution stands out for its increasingly simple, more integrated use with other SCM group technologies thanks to the new Maestro Active Finishing software control.

43

UV LED The UV LED polymerisation system utilises several UV monochromatic sources of different wavelengths to achieve a controlled multichromatic emission in a wider spectrum compared to pure UV LED radiation. This allows you to achieve chemical-physical performances fully comparable with standard UV polymerisation, while maintaining the typical advantages offered by LED. Technology for the polymerisation of paints is highly advantageous in terms of ecosustainability, thanks to the reduced energy consumption of LED light compared to bulbs. Furthermore, UV LED lights do not require special disposal because they do not contain any toxic elements, like mercury, which is essential for the functioning of classic UV lights. Last, but not least, the UV LED lights guarantee exceptional finishing quality, especially in the case of thermal-sensitive materials, because only a minimum amount of heat is released during drying. This ensures that the number of scraps falls drastically, and the finish effect is next to none. Superfici has engineered this technology, which proves to be versatile on a wide range of products, suited to standalone machines as well as high-productivity machinery and lines.

“SCM Surface Technologies is an all-around, integrated offer of sanding, pressing and painting products and services to satisfy each process requirement for the creation of exclusive, sophisticated and trending surfaces”

Excimatt For extra-opaque effects on the finish of the most varied end products and materials, another new entry is the Superfici Excimatt. Excimer technology offers surprisingly smooth effects with high levels of opacity to satisfy the latest design trends. Another important advantage is the possibility of achieving particularly resistant surfaces over time. Thanks to the excimer drying treatment in the inert chamber, results with an extra-matte finish and very low Gloss are realised without the addition of chemical additives. This can be achieved thanks to the micro-structuring of the surface which provides incredible resistance against scratch and tread marks, without compromising the warmth and smoothness to touch.

Discovering décors digitally

Launched in spring 2022, and with over 120,000 interactions to date, the James Latham Digital Showroom has become a go-to hub for furniture makers looking to discover the very latest décors to land in the UK market. There are over 1,400 different veneers, laminates, melamines, and solid surfaces on the platform, from global players to boutique manufacturers, and popular brands including Dekodur, Swiss Krono, XyloCleaf, HIMACS, Egger, Valchromat, and Abet Laminati. However, over the past year, Lathams has noticed an increasing user appetite for specific brands and ranges, particularly Transformad’s TMatt and Crystal collections. Manufactured using the latest innovations in melamine-faced board production, the former is sensuously silky and soft-to-the-touch, whilst the latter comprises a range of high-gloss sheets that faithfully mimic polished stone, corresponding to a growing trend for surfaces that combine visual appeal and tactility. Decospan’s Shinnoki is also proving popular amongst the UK’s furniture and joinery community. From honeyed oaks to smoky walnuts, it’s a premium range of pre-finished, real-timber veneered panels perfect for cabinetry, interior wall lining, and in-built furniture. For those looking to find out more about these materials, each has its dedicated profile on the Digital Showroom, so users can view complete, accurate product information and make an informed decision before selection. Even better, each one is complemented by a 3D hyper-

realistic digital render which can be viewed at any angle, under a variety of lighting conditions, aiming to offer as close to an in-person visual representation as possible. For those wanting to take a closer look at any of the products listed on the Digital Showroom, there’s also a dedicated sampling service. Selected materials can be called off in an instant and promptly delivered to you at home, in the office, or on-site. These samples can then be discussed at a time that suits the user, via a video conference with a dedicated materials expert. It’s a platform that keeps evolving and is constantly updated, with new colours, patterns, and collections being added regularly. www.lathamtimber.co.uk

Introducing the Emporio Skin collection During the last year, Emporio Skin and Lawcris Panel Products have worked closely together to bring to the UK one of the most comprehensive, authentic ranges of stones and concretes as a versatile MFC board. Versatile, durable, and aesthetically appealing, concrete and stone contribute to an ambience of sophistication, rugged elegance and timeless charm. Though striking materials, they each poses several challenges, making them demanding mediums to work with. Pouring and shaping concrete requires skill and precision. Moreover, the sheer weight of concrete can present logistical nightmares. Weight and density are problematic for stone, too, along with the hurdle of precision cutting and shaping it. “Our customers are becoming more demanding, and so they should be,” explains Lauren Barker, marketing manager. “Not only do they want authenticity without the aggravation of dealing with the real thing, but they need to buy within budget and feel safe in the knowledge that they are choosing from a sustainable option.

“Texture embossing techniques mimic the surface irregularities and tactile qualities of natural stone, while different finishes are applied to replicate the sheen or roughness of various stone types”

GD Pegaso Autentico with matching edging

“Emporio Skin has become a very popular option. The ability to emulate stone and concrete materials as an MFC ticks many boxes. It offers flexibility in design, provides an affordable alternative, while maintaining a consistent appearance throughout the project. Chipboard stands as a viable and sustainable option within the spectrum of materials available for construction, furniture, and various interior applications. “If I could pick a couple of customer favourites from the Emporio Skin collection, I would have to say the Pegaso range. A set of three stones, each carrying their unique colour variations, but it is the texture which gives them depth and character.

The tactile experience offered by concrete and stone adds a sensory dimension to spaces

“Surface treatments and finishes play a crucial role in creating the tactile sensation of real stone on MFC boards. Texture embossing techniques mimic the surface irregularities and tactile qualities of natural stone, while different finishes are applied to replicate the sheen or roughness of various stone types. “Another pair of decors that customers gravitate toward are the Dogales. With their concrete effect, the minimalist, elegant and extremely contemporary character of these decors are enhanced by the finish, which gives the surfaces a pleasant and delicate roughness.” There are 16 exclusive decors in the UK Emporio Skin collection available from Lawcris Panel Products. 0113 2177 177 sales@lawcris.co.uk

HPP welcomes Gola range of handleless profiles

The handleless Gola profile has been added to the furniture fittings offer from Hill’s Panel Products (HPP) as more customers seek the minimalistic contemporary finish. Gola profiles are designed to create a seamless, handleless kitchen front and can be fitted horizontally and vertically. It is easy to maintain and child-friendly, given the sleek, concealed appearance with no protruding handles. HPP’s new Gola range comes in aluminium and matt black finishes and is available in the C profile for drawers and the J profile for countertops, together with the relevant endcaps, corner connectors and fixing clips. The new additions were unveiled to an enthusiastic response at the Oldham-based firm’s HPX trade show and can be fitted with HPP’s Aspire made-to-measure, vinyl-wrapped door range as it requires a shorter door height (685mm as opposed to the 715mm off-the-shelf

door size). “The Gola profile is a great addition to what we do,” says Chris Essex, HPP national sales manager. “It will certainly enhance our PVCedged door offer; we can manufacture a slab door in any colour to support the Gola profile. “We’ve given samples to all the sales reps who are now out in the field promoting it and we are receiving orders already. The first ones have already gone out and we’re seeing and hearing nothing but good things about it.” The new profiles, which come in 4.1m lengths that can be cut to size, are held in place using the latest clip-in method, whereby fixing clips are screwed to the carcass instead of screwing the profile directly to the unit, leaving the screw heads exposed. HPP, which has been making and supplying doors, board, fittings and accessories for the fitted furniture market for 32 years, has 55 styles in its made-to-measure Aspire door range, that

come in 59 colours, including woodgrains, super matt and high gloss uni-colours and painted oak effect decors. All Aspire vinyl-wrapped products are available to order online by HPP account holders using the product builder area of its website, and, in addition to doors, the Aspire range features various other vinyl-wrapped products such as worktops and kitchen and bedroom accessories. www.hpponline.co.uk

“Using the best available technology, we’ve upgraded a number of decors using more realistic textures,” Aimee explains. “However, the one that really stands out for 2024 has to be the Matt. Smooth, velvety and luxurious, Matt textures are highly desirable. We’ve upgraded the surface and updated the decors available in our Perfect Sense range, and for the first time we’ll be offering matt textured woodgrains.” So, what’s the story behind the collection? “A natural approach is what people want, to escape from an over digitalised world,” says Aimee. “Decors are warm and cosy, neutral and natural,

calm and quiet, contributing towards glamourous escapism that feels homely and stylish, rather than stark or bright. In contrast, we’re seeing rich and dark decors creating relaxed yet opulent, high-value interiors, in both the home and workplace. “The evolution of material finishes offers a stylish yet natural accent. Traditionally offered as slates, stones, and marbles, there is a clear shift towards metallics that ooze luxury and are very close to real material finishes.” “The mix-and-match approach is standing strong as people have more confidence in

their own design aspirations. This was a key consideration when selecting the final cut, as we’ve made sure that decors will transfer into multiple interior styles, and work in numerous combinations.” The Launch Event will provide an opportunity to discuss and understand the new range with both Panelco and Egger. Its new palette, which comprises four brand new marble-effect colours, is ideally suited for everything from kitchen worksurfaces, splashbacks and islands to bathroom cladding, furniture, office desks, public buildings and more. Gravilla collection The Gravilla collection follows the aesthetic veined trend of Aurora & Marmo, combined with a granite particles inspiration thanks to the shorter veins and a chip effect. The new Gravilla colours have the benefit of being easier to fabricate with seamless joining, ideal for large surfaces such as shower or wall cladding in a

bathroom, long, wide islands in the kitchen or monolithic reception desks. Gravilla Snow (GM01) is a sophisticated offwhite design with soft veins and a gentle look and feel that works wonderfully in all settings. TAKA explores the latest market trends influencing door manufacturing

Over the last few years, there has been a strong trend towards composite doors with laminated panels. These come with the key benefit of being lighter than solid wood boards and with a broader range of finishes available. Naturally, interior designers have observed and confirmed the growing demand to match interior doors with other elements like flooring, wall colour and the overriding mood or aesthetic a client wants to create with the environment. From a manufacturing point of view, foil lamination is an effective way of meeting this high level of personalisation efficiently. It’s important to consider the number of open/ close cycles during the door’s lifetime, as well as environmental factors like temperature, humidity and exposure to sunlight. Durability becomes a key feature for interior doors. But how can we guarantee a long lifetime for our doors? Without a doubt, the adhesives used in the flat lamination and profile wrapping process play a key role in the resistance to humidity and temperature fluctuations.

62 ADHESIVES

When situated within kitchen environments, where hot pots and pans are present every day, or a bathroom with hot water steam, reactive polyurethane hot melt adhesives (HMPUR) are the best choice, TAKA would suggest. The HMPUR technology features an irreversible bonding process that meets the most demanding requirements in terms of adhesion, water and heat resistance, as well as chemical resistance. HMPUR adhesives are extremely versatile and are ideal for wood-based products, but also for the lamination of PVC, PP, and ABS profiles and panels, as well as sandwich panels for lightweight constructions in yachts and campers. But even the best glue in the world will not develop its full potential if it is not applied under the correct working parameters. As the industry is facing a lack of experienced operators, Italian adhesive manufacturer, TAKA, has founded an exclusive Academy for training on production and quality control to help companies achieve the best quality results. Two other trending topics, sustainability and the safety of operators, have inspired TAKA to develop two new lines of adhesives, formulated

and produced with in-house raw materials to ensure consistent performance and results over time. The Low Emission Systems (LESS) range features polyurethane adhesives with a free monomer content (MDI) of less than 0.1% for label-free adhesives, which are not subject to

mandatory safety training. The second range incorporates bio-based adhesives with a high content of raw materials from non-fossil renewable sources that help to meet the reduction of CO2 emissions throughout the industry. www.taka-adhesives.com

edged frame, as well as its vast design and creative variety. A particular highlight is the Illumination design profile, where an LED profile illuminates the frame with a glass inlay. In addition, Ostermann offers the classic double-walled drawer system ArciTech and the distinctively edged drawer system, InnoTech Atira, available in three colours and with numerous frames and system heights. New – hinges for various applications Sensys hinges from Hettich are regularly awarded international prizes for their design and functionality. They are available in soft-close and non-soft-close variants, with and without self-closing mechanisms, for different opening angles. The elegant Sensys cup hinges in obsidian black are particularly striking. Ostermann also provides the Intermat hinge series as well as the guiding hinge Kamat, which was specially developed for tall furniture doors on refrigerators with fixed door connections. “We are delighted now to offer our customers even more diversity from a single source with Hettich’s products,” comments Stephen Parsons, MD of Ostermann UK. “There was an extremely constructive exchange in the run-up to our UK partnership. New furniture fronts Those wishing to manufacture their furniture fronts will find the necessary items, such as edgings, glues, and cleaners, at Ostermann. Carpentry businesses can also obtain readyto-install fronts made to measure. As a partner to the trade, Ostermann attaches great importance to offering all carpenters and cabinet makers suitable solutions. There are regular innovations in customisable furniture fronts. Currently, these are new colours for the linoleum and Arpa Fenix fronts. Linoleum fronts are now even available with a matching linoleum edging upon request. This makes the already elegant appearance even more sophisticated. Also, the range of 3D fronts has been extended to include a model with a cutting-edge grooved look. If you want modern fronts with walnut veneer,

Whether wood veneer, linoleum, or super matt furniture elements with the Fenix surface at Ostermann, you can order made-to-measure parts and have them delivered ready to mount

you will also find these at Ostermann. View the entire selection of customisable furniture fronts in the “Made to Measure” section on the Ostermann website www.ostermann.eu. Fenix fronts – intense new colours Along with the extended colour palette of the Fenix NTM Bloom Collection, Ostermann has added six new colours (Viola Orissa, Rosso Namib, Giallo Evora, Blu Shaba, Verde Kitami and Grigio Aragona) not only to its edging selection but also to its front range. The intense plain colours have an extremely matt surface finish, which makes them quite the elegant choice. Linoleum fronts – now available with Linoleum Edging Fronts with a soft matt linoleum surface are a sustainable option. Ostermann no longer delivers them exclusively with ABS or real wood

edgings; colour-matched linoleum edgings are now also available upon request. Clay, Walnut and Leather offer three new, soft earth tones. Highly topical – grooved look There is no way around furniture or wall elements with a grooved look in current interior design. The trend is quickly implemented with the new “groove 20” milling model within the range of 3D fronts. The fronts are available in eight colours and with many wooden, stone and metallic decors to select from. On trend – walnut Furniture with wood veneer finish is becoming increasingly popular, particularly in walnut. The warm hue and fine grain of fronts in American walnut are ideal for furniture with an exclusive and natural appearance. www.ostermann.eu

Striebig: a cut above Striebig’s 50,000th vertical panel saw has been sold to Ireland’s only independently owned extruded aluminium profiles manufacturer, Architectural & Metal Systems Ltd (AMS). Part of an ambitious growth plan that will see the 22acre site in Cork, Southern Ireland increase its processing capabilities to 23,000 tonnes a year, the company is continuing to invest in highquality machinery to grow its extensive range of aluminium products and sell to industries across the world. “We didn’t set out to be a manufacturing company,” begins Ronan McGrath, sales director of AMS. “The company started life as a windows and doors systems company but in a bid to widen our markets and expand our portfolio, we needed to reduce our reliance on other

carried more stock but with so many unique sizes requested, this wasn’t a practical solution. In an attempt to keep production moving, we even started working on doors while we waited for the material to arrive, but this meant dismantling and reassembling the doors when the polycarbonate was eventually delivered. This wasn’t an efficient way of working. We were doubling our workload.” The bottleneck in production was identified quickly. “It was clear that the solution was to cut the panels internally and keep our entire manufacturing process under one roof,” says Ronan. Following a recommendation from an existing Striebig customer as well as a trusted supplier, R&J Machinery of Hinckley, a demonstration at TM Machinery’s showroom in Leicester was arranged which lead to AMS

manufacturers and gain control in-house. Today, we can offer a complete, turn-key solution on all aluminium products thanks to our state-of-the-art extrusion, powder coating, anodising, decorative sublimation and fabrication facilities.” It’s this vision of offering a complete solution under one roof – from conception to project delivery – that is behind the company’s investment in a Striebig Control vertical panel saw. “We invested in the wall saw for a specific fabrication project. We had been using pre-cut 8mm multi-wall and 8mm clear polycarbonate panels from a third-party manufacturer but this ran the risk of sheets being cut incorrectly or arriving damaged. To compensate for this, we

purchasing their first Striebig Control vertical panel saw. “It was the saw’s automation that grabbed our attention,” explains Ronan. “We didn’t have any experienced saw operators working for us. We needed a machine that was easy to use and simple to learn. For us, the uplift in price for this automatic model compared to the potential issues that could arise from materials being cut wrongly or the saw used incorrectly on a manual model was justifiable. Plus, with the addition of the saw’s in-built optimisation software, it went a step further in eliminating human error as cutting lists, sizing and product bar codes could be generated automatically.”

“We were promised a machine that could help us achieve greater efficiency without having to source experienced operators. It did just that”

Partnered with an AL-KO Power Unit – which was built with an extra silencer for even quieter operation – the new wall saw was positioned and installed on a dedicated mezzanine floor within eight weeks. “We worked with TM Machinery’s Irish partners, TI Machinery who surveyed the site. It made the installation hasslefree and if we had any questions, TM Machinery were only a call away. Within two days, the saw had been installed and our staff felt proficient in using it.” The Striebig Control’s simple operation and clever design features helped AMS hit the ground running. “We were promised a machine that could help us achieve greater efficiency without having to source experienced operators. It did just that,” admits Ronan. The rear support on the machine has been designed to stop lightweight material like 8mm polycarbonate flexing when cut and, unlike manual machines, the feed speed is automatically controlled by the machine, so the cut is always clean and made with pinpoint accuracy. The saw also comes with a plethora of built-in features as standard to assist in the

69

cutting process, including a 12” touch screen, panel end recognition, constant return speed of the saw unit, an operating-hour meter and automatic stop positioning on both axes. “We now only cut material when required,” admits Ronan. “Our newly trained operator can use the vertical panel saw for three hours and generate enough work for a full week. No more mistakes or hold-ups mean our fabricators can get to work more quickly, halving lead times. It’s

made the whole process much more efficient. “We know we’re not running the machine hard – we’re cutting 800 panels a month – but it’s quickly become an integral part of our production,” Ronan continues. “The clincher for us is the potential this machine has for our business. Where we may have shied away from a project that required a third party to cut sheets to size in the past, we now have the ability to do this ourselves and exceptionally well.”

When it comes to ROI, it’s clear that this isn’t always a numbers game for AMS. “For us, a return will come in two to three years but it’s important to consider the wider benefits and the opportunity this machine offers us,” says Ronan. “We can be sure of a 20% labour saving and a substantial reduction in used floorspace now we no longer stock pre-cut material. These savings were seen immediately but are more difficult to quantify. That said, our customers were seeing the financial benefits from day one as they no longer needed to pay for pre-cut material to be delivered to us or have the stress and worry of working with multiple suppliers.” So, what’s next for AMS? “A third extrusion line is already nearing completion, and another new building will be constructed in the new year, bringing our total floor space to 400,000ft2. When it comes to the Striebig, our goal is to grow this area of the business and triple production in the next two years. We see the Striebig running four to five times a week and helping feed our fabricating line further. The saw has the capabilities to handle much higher volumes and we’re looking forward to putting Striebig’s 50,000th saw to good use for many years to come.” www.tmmachinery.co.uk

Choosing the right Insert Nut for the job There’s a lot to think about when selecting the correct Insert Nut for a job. The thread size and length of insert required are determined by the fixings being used and the timber thickness, but there are more options. Consider the forces at play in the joint where the Insert Nut is to be used. For a lightweight application, an A Type or B Type Knock-in insert could be suitable. They tap quickly and easily into a pre-drilled hole. External barbs prevent spinning and offer a good level of pull-out resistance, particularly in hardwood and plywood. Type A Inserts are unheaded so they can be embedded in the timber for a flush fit. Type B has a flanged head which prevents pull-through when bolted from the underside. Screw-in and specialist Insert Nuts

D Type ensures that the insert is screwed tightly up to the timber surface, whilst the Type E can be fully embedded within the pre-drilled hole. JET PRESS stocks a large range of thread sizes and lengths, across all types of inserts and can offer premium and budget versions of many popular sizes. This means the company can satisfy customer needs from both quality and pricing perspectives. JET PRESS also carries a variety of specialist parts which may be more suitable for your application. For instance, end-capped Type I inserts offer a neat finish where the head is visible. Large flanged inserts spread load across a larger surface area on heavy-duty assemblies. Expanding brass Type X inserts grip tighter as the bolt is screwed in and serrated Type P ensure a high pull-out resistance.

Screw-in Type D and Type E Insert Nuts offer a greater degree of hold-in and a higher resistance to vibration, thanks to the external, self-tapping thread. The hex head makes fitting quick, accurate and easy using a hexagon driver or Allen key. This makes them well-suited for use in softwoods and chipboard. The flange on the

Titus expands T-type hinges with two innovative additions Two innovative new products have been added to the successful range of T-type hinges from cabinet hardware expert, Titus. The T-type PressTo offers fast and easy tool-less hinge mounting, while the T-type-i 170 allows cabinet doors to open to a full 170º with an integrated damper. Like all products in the T-type range, the new additions reliably deliver the soft closing action preferred by end users, and are suitable for use with door thicknesses from 15 to 26 mm. The new T-type PressTo is securely locked to the door simply by pressing on the integrated mounting lever. No tools are needed, and an audible click confirms that the hinge has been properly mounted. This arrangement simplifies hinge installation and saves time, and is equally suitable for factory- or home-assembled products. Developed to allow full access to cabinet interiors, the T-type-i 170 combines wideangle opening with an integrated damper to ensure smooth, controlled operation. It offers exceptional stability throughout its operating range and provides zero door protrusion at a door opening angle of 90º, making it an ideal choice for use in kitchen units with inner drawers or pull-out systems. T-type hinges feature the renowned Titus ‘Confident Close’ – the consumer-preferred reliable and consistent soft-close damping, characterised by late-start deceleration and quiet landing in the last stage of closing as the door leans against the cabinet side. The proprietary Titus multi-purpose integrated damping technology is positioned transversal in the hinge cup, ensuring life-long damping with no bounceback and superior performance.

T-type-i 170

In addition, the hinges are exceptionally tolerant of misalignment and drilling variations. Their unique 3Way tool-less snapon mounting plate, which offers intuitive hinge-to-plate mounting in three directions, greatly simplifies door installation, especially with tall doors that need four or even five hinges. The unique design of the mounting plate reinforces stability and rigidity while maintaining smooth hinge operation. Titus T-type hinges have passed FIRA tests for BS 6222-2-2009, Test Level H and can be supplied with cross-mounting plates or with linear mounting plates that simplify both hinge alignment and hinge-to-plate attachment. www.titusplus.com

HOFFMANN MU3 Dovetail Router for cost-effective vision panel production High-quality fire doors require a top-quality finish, particularly when it comes to the vision panel cassettes. When producing vision panel cassettes, accurate mitre cuts reduce the need for further finishing work before joining. Creating an accurate, tight joint is also key in maintaining the frame’s integrity, as well as reducing the need for filling once joining is complete. With the correct equipment, a skilled joiner can produce accurate mitre cut profiles. Using the HOFFMANN Dovetail Router to complete the joint is a cost-effective way of ensuring accurate, high-quality vision panel cassettes. Once all the pieces have been mitred, the workpieces are transferred to the Hoffmann MU3 for processing the dovetail slots. The Hoffmann Keys are then inserted in the mitre joints to complete the vision panel cassette.

The Hoffmann MU3 Dovetail Router

The Hoffmann MU3 Dovetail Router is available in four models: • MU-3 Entry Level version for the quick and precise routing of dovetail slots. • MU-3 D Digital version, with electronic two-axis display for the adjustable routing depth, as well as the positioning of the centre fence for the routed slot location. It is ideal for high-precision work. • MU-3 P Pneumatic version for series production and high throughput. Pneumatic workpiece clamping and controlled router feed. The MU-3 P is operated by foot-pedal control. • MU-3 PD Pneumatic and Digital version – the top machine with the highest operating comfort for a wide range of requirements. Functional features are similar to MU-3 D with a digital two-axis display for the adjustable routing depth, as well as the positioning of the centre fence for the routed slot location. The MU-3 and the MU-3 D have a workpiece thickness capacity of up to 140mm, increasing to 170mm in the MU-3 P and MU-3 PD versions. They offer infinitely adjustable routing depths up to 95mm and protection against break-out of the finished surface. The dual-function hand lever ensures quick machine cycles when routing smaller workpieces, while the scale

tapes in the table and the rear fences assist in the quick and precise positioning of the workpieces. All versions of the new MU-3 routing machine are equipped with a motor carriage which has vernier adjustment for the precise setting of the router cutter and hence the adjustable tension of the joint. Once the dovetail slots have been cut into all the mitre faces, the mitres can be locked together by inserting the Hoffmann Dovetail Key all the way into the slot. Optionally, a thin layer of glue can be applied to the surfaces before bringing them together. Once the Hoffmann key is inserted, the joint is secure – no drying time is required. As long as the mitres are accurate, no filling is required. Frames can be sprayed or lacquered before fitting into the door. When producing fire doors, all the component parts are essential in ensuring the door maintains its integrity. Hoffmann Dovetail Keys are an integral part of many fire doors, and have been accredited with FD30 / FD60 fire safety ratings for securing the joints in vision panel cassettes. Hoffmann keys have also been successfully tested in composite fire door blanks and solid wood door frames. 01524 841500 info@hoffmann-uk.com www.hoffmann-uk.com

Microvellum University empowers users to excel

Microvellum University (MVU) is a comprehensive training programme designed to help woodworkers maximise their usage of Microvellum’s design-to-manufacturing software platform. The courses and structure of MVU’s classroom sessions allow attendees to immerse themselves in the software in a hands-on, learn-by-doing format. Recently, Microvellum’s UK-based team hosted a five-day training course for beginners and intermediate-level users of the software. The event commenced with a factory tour at Unitech Oxon, a bespoke kitchen cabinet manufacturer in Oxfordshire, and continued with a networking session for all attendees. The week-long educational event was led by Microvellum’s certified instructors, Martin Rowan, and Colin Bailey, along with account manager, Daniel Mesecke. Attendees of MVU have shared their thoughts on the experience, stating, “It can be tough to set aside time for training. I am always busy; projects are constantly in progress, and interruptions are too frequent to focus on learning something new at work. It was nice to get away and focus on learning with the group at MVU.” “I’d recommend MVU to anyone, from

beginners to intermediate to experts. Everyone had different ways of using the software and different abilities. Being at the University is the only way you’re going to get all that knowledge in one room and be able to learn something new.” Education is a core element of Microvellum’s mission, aiming to assist woodworkers in streamlining and standardising their processes so they can confidently scale their businesses. Recently, Microvellum University classroom training courses were held in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States, all with the same goal: to empower individuals to reach their full potential and advance their careers and businesses more rapidly, leveraging the power and flexibility of Microvellum software. Colin Bailey, a Certified Microvellum Instructor from the UK, recently shared his experience as a teacher at MVU, stating, “I believe that most people who attended were able to reinforce best practices, deepen their knowledge, and gain a bit of confidence. I think that’s what MVU is all about – helping people learn more about the software that drives their production so they can maximise its usage, advance their careers, and grow their businesses. What an awesome thing to be a part of.” www.Microvellum.com
