This issue, we mark 75 years of our cover star, REHAU. From a small family business in Bavaria, REHAU has expanded into an international family of companies with a staggering 190 locations and more than 20,000 staff worldwide. With the second generation of the Wagner family at the helm, continued growth is on the cards for the company as we move into 2024, with a specific focus on the UK market. 2024’s events calendar, too, paints a promising picture. As well as the established international line-up of Holz-Handwerk, Xyelxpo and more, the breadth of domestic shows in the coming year will no doubt provide a rich and inspiring showcase for professionals in the UK and abroad. It goes without saying that the manufacturing industry has also been weathering a troubling climate of sky-high material and energy costs, alongside the shortage of skilled labour and pressure to meet net-zero targets. With no quick fix in sight, navigating these challenges will certainly require creative thinking, and even a wholesale change in the way businesses operate. ‘Digital transformation’ will doubtless be integral in tackling these growing issues, and to forging a new and resilient future for the industry. While there’s no magic bullet, schemes such as the Made Smarter Adoption Programme will hopefully begin to establish a support system and source of information for those looking to enhance their offering. Find out more in our report on page 24. Happy reading!

As even some of those quirky European products are probably in stock on Ostermann’s shelves in Germany, Ostermann can get those here usually within five days … so this opens up the entire Hettich range of products to the UK market in a quicker way than has been possible before.” Matt: “For instance, Hettich UK had an order for two cutlery trays and the customer wanted them the next day and we can’t get them out after 12 noon normally – so one quick phone call to Ostermann and it was sorted. When a kitchen is finished and ready to go out on delivery to a client, apart for the two cutlery trays, there is an urgent necessity that we want to be able to satisfy if at all possible. At the end of November 2023 there came a welcome announcement that the Government had committed to expanding the Made Smarter Adoption Programme nationally. This level of commitment – issued in tandem with £4.5b in funding for British manufacturing – comes at a pivotal time for the industry, with a crucial opportunity to boost productivity and investment at hand.

deal of helpful feedback that will shape the programme’s offering going forwards. For example, it quickly demonstrated that, though funded access to expertise and skills were highly attractive to manufacturers, there was a demand for short, focused interventions to help SME leaders who were time-poor. It also made clear that the “digital readiness” of SME manufacturers had been overestimated. Promoting data and systems integration has thus provided a valuable stepping stone to the more Donna Edwards, Director of Made Smarter’s North West Adoption Programme, and Paul McClaren, Chair of the Made Smarter NW Steering Group

only be successful if it learned and evolved in line with the specific and individual needs of manufacturers. Indeed, it’s helpful to drill down and understand how the programme might help SME manufacturers in real terms. Door and Window Systems (DAWS), based in Knowsley, Liverpool, made a significant investment in software and systems integration tools with the support of Made Smarter and its digital transformation workshop process. “This new venture offers us an opportunity to lay the digital foundations for a warehouse and logistics hub. Integrating the two sites through digital communication will enable better management of stock, orders and distribution and establish full oversight of our operations.” As the Made Smarter programme enters its next phase, it is to be hoped this blueprint for success can be replicated and evolved to create an accessible path to digital transformation. It will also be interesting to see how the initiative might promote the pooling of resources and expertise nationally. With a short length cutting service, REHAU’s own adhesive brand, and the capability to create any edgeband to any surface, all the bases are covered. In response to feedback and requests from last year’s Surface Design Show, REHAU is also combining its expertise in manufacturing with exceptional design by offering a cut and edge service to a selection of its highly acclaimed ‘RAUVISIO’ surface material. Furniture fronts are made from a super refined MDF, available in a soft touch, antifingerprint, super matt Acrylic, or if a more robust surface is required, a matching HPL surface that can be used horizontally as well as vertically and is scratch, heat and chemical resistant. Fronts can be cut to any size and are edged with REHAU’s premium zero joint edgeband for a seamless finish, perfectly matched to the surface. High five – innovative electrospindle puts a unique spin on machining Here, Biesse explains why continuous c-axis rotation on your machining electrospindle will improve efficiency and quality ... The five-axis advantage For joinery companies with an eye on expansion, one of the most lucrative and logical growth strategies is to invest in five-axis machining capabilities. Whilst three- and four-axis machining is ideal for ‘bread and butter’ jobs such as windows, doors, standard staircases and furniture, introducing a fifth axis opens up new avenues. With a fifth axis to play with, manufacturers can tackle more specialist jobs such as twisted handrails, spiral

“Biesse utilises a fiveaxis electrospindle that can rotate freely without having to stop and reset itself”
Whilst reduced cycle time is an important advantage, the quality finish that can be achieved with repeatable precision is the primary benefit of this feature. Continuous rotation leaves no dwell marks on the object, eliminating the need for further finishing. Carrying out all finishing on the machine is more efficient and produces a defect-free superior quality finish that is consistent and repeatable. These innovative electrospindles are designed and manufactured by HSD, Biesse Group’s mechatronics division, and a world leader in excellence within the mechatronics sector. 01327 300366 info@biesse.co.uk www.biesse.com/uk

with a view to reducing material waste. The aim at the root of the Maestro optiwise development is to achieve cutting excellence with minimum waste for production batches that are both large and small. The software allows you to simply establish the ideal solution in terms of times and costs thanks to powerful algorithms capable of working on multicore systems. It also features external integrability towards any ERP, by importing the material storage and the cutting lists relating to the orders to be produced. Dual direction office/factory 4.0 integration is another key attribute. The software allows programs relating to orders for completion to be sent instantaneously to the machine and to read the machining parameters for punctual and correct planning. www.scmgroup.com

is needed to extract and transport the material, dust and debris. Nordfab’s Quick-Fit (QF) ducting system is designed with modular ductwork concept that enables quick and hasslefree installation. All Quick-Fit ductwork components have a rolled edge on the ends which provides easy connection to other components with use of a barrel-type clip. A specially designed gasket inside the clip seals the joint tightly to eliminate potential leakage. Because Quick-Fit ducting systems clip together, no rivets, screws or welding are needed. This cuts installation and downtime by up to 50% compared to flanged ductwork installation. 01132 739 400 www.nordfab.com

machine is operating, without the risk of slipping or bending. This happens thanks to a four-sensor 3D PROBE decimal probing system and a presser that ensure maximum workpiece stability during machining. This stability is guaranteed irrespective of the repositioning of the clamp and also in the unusual and elaborate machining. The slide bearings act as a continuous guide,

aiding the operator and reducing possible errors with piece linearity. morbidelli pwx500 The new morbidelli pwx500 is the ideal drilling solution for connected and integrated production and to achieve highly competitive production standards per shift on medium and large batches. The drilling machine can work intensively over several shifts and is designed to significantly reduce tooling changes and other operations that cause unproductive time.
morbidelli pwx500
This new drilling machine is also synonymous with high efficiency. Indeed, it is “the only one on the market to offer up to five rows of spindles on the right and left in order to reach the extremities of the panel to make structural holes according to different production needs”. Efficiency and high productivity combine with a considerable machining simplicity thanks to the optimiser software that controls the entire machine’s set up, the drilling steps and the integration of morbidelli cx220
production lines consisting of several machines. New Maestro 3Drill software As well as two new machines, SCM has integrated a new drilling software, Maestro 3Drill, to apply the main advantages of morbidelli numerically controlled programming software to drilling machines. Some of the main advantages include the possibility of directly importing three-dimensional solids with automatic recognition of the holes to be performed. This speeds up and simplifies the user’s

Timber business invests in two wood waste heaters A market leader in timber frame buildings has purchased two wood waste heaters from Wood Waste Technology after experiencing the benefits of free waste disposal and heating. Frame Homes is one of the UK’s leading timber frame companies, established in 1974. The business operates from a 4.5 acre site complete with over 100,000ft2 of advanced factory space. Frame Homes specialises in the design, manufacture and on-site assembly of a wide range of high-performance timber frame solutions and engineered timber products, working with a client base that spans self-builders through to large national developers. The manufacturing operation is split across a number of units on the site, from the Truss Factory through to the Timber Frame Manufacturing area. Gary Kent, general manager at Frame Homes, decided it was time to invest in a wood waste heater for the Timber Frame manufacturing area. The building had gas heaters that were becoming more expensive to run, so it made good business sense to recycle some of the waste wood from production to heat the building. Having experienced the benefits of wood waste heaters previously, Gary searched the internet for a supplier and liked the look of the heaters manufactured in the UK by Wood Waste Technology. Following a site survey and a quote, Gary purchased two

HIMACS selected for secondary school turned technology campus Dutch businessman Barry Verdel’s dream was to take his technology company, Verdel Digitaal Partner, to the next level. With the goal of building an inspiring space for the business as well as the employees; Design & Meer the studio responsible for the design and production, together with VRP architects, took on the project to convert an old secondary school into a workplace and campus dedicated to information and communications technology. It was fundamental that high-quality materials, such as HIMACS, should be used for the build, which encompassed not only the creation of the company’s offices, but also a limited amount of housing where younger employees would be able to stay for up to seven years. The original building, a secondary school

“Many people have wondered how we managed to fit such a huge counter into the space, and it’s precisely because HIMACS allows different parts to be joined together without any visible seams,” explains Design & Meer studio. This special attribute of the material – which for this project made it possible to work with 35 pieces and be able to join them together to create a unique counter with a totally uniform design – rounds off HIMACS’ outstanding hygienic properties. The entire counter surface is non-porous and smooth, preventing any unwanted build-up of dirt, bacteria and viruses. It is for this very reason that this solid surface material is ideal for projects subject to high everyday traffic. www.lxhausys.com/uk/himacs

HSE “Dust Kills” Campaign emphasises dangers The HSE is driving home the dangers of fine dust with its current Dust Kills campaign. This month’s column from Chris Franklin, MD at Ranheat Engineering Ltd examines how the HSE are targeting dust in the workplace, and how Ranheat can help with this issue. The repercussions for businesses that breach regulations can be severe, and indeed a Cheshire furniture manufacturer was recently prosecuted and fined £16,000 by local magistrates after failing two separate inspections by the HSE. To protect workers, throughout 2023/24 HSE is inspecting a variety of woodworking businesses, ensuring that woodwork is planned correctly to minimise risk, and that adequate control measures are in place to protect workers’ health.
