Welcome to the March issue of Spring 2024, which heralds the start of a busy events schedule over the next few months. With key trade shows taking place across Europe and the UK, the Furniture & Joinery Production team are looking forward to experiencing a dynamic blend of machinery and equipment, fittings and components, first-hand.

In addition, the sustained development of at-home events from numerous companies will continue to provide a focused way of getting to know an individual supplier.

We look forward to connecting with many of you at the events, most especially at Furniture Component Expo in April and Materials & Finishes Show in May. As official media partners, we will be exhibiting at both events, providing engaging reports as well as video and social media content for those who can’t be there this time around.

More recently, the team enjoyed one of Panelco’s Innovation Insight events, exploring the wide variety of premium decorative surfacing options on offer – see page 12 for our report. A major draw of this event was the strong presence from Egger, with their highly anticipated Decorative Collection 24+ artfully displayed. DecorEdge asset acquisition latest move in REHAU’s distribution expansion

Global polymer group, REHAU, has strengthened its relationship with long-standing customer, DecorEdge after purchasing the Manchester-based edgebanding firm’s asset base and welcomes two key team members into the business.

This arrangement came into effect from 31st January and is the next step in REHAU’s growth strategy within its interior

solutions division.

Customers of DecorEdge will gain immediate access to REHAU’s extensive range of products, including its industryleading edgebanding, surface and storage solutions. They will also be able to form a direct relationship with the experts who design and manufacture the original components.

Robin Clevett confirmed as Materials & Finishes Show 2024 partner

Robin Clevett, the selfconfessed carpentry, joinery and building fanatic, has been announced as an official ambassador for Materials & Finishes Show 2024 (formerly W Exhibition.)

As well as working closely with the event organising team in the run-up to the UK’s trade show for the furniture manufacturing and joinery industries, Robin will also make an appearance at the exhibition this May (Birmingham NEC, 19th - 22nd May.)

Beesley & Fildes acquires specialist timber range from Silva Timber

Family-owned builders merchant, Beesley & Fildes, has acquired part of Silva Timber, adding a specialist timber range to its portfolio and appointing two new employees.

Based in Widnes, Cheshire, Silva Timber went into administration in October 2023. The deal sees Beesley & Fildes

acquire a range of products from the business, including external cladding, coated wood, hardwood decking, slatted screen fencing and cedar shingles. Sustainably sourced from around the world, the timber range will be available across the merchant’s 11 branches and online.

Import volumes rallied during the second half of 2023, TDUK data shows

more than 40,000 Instagram Followers and hosts The Carpentry Show on FIX Radio, will play a hands-on role as part of the brand new Materials & Finishes Show demonstration area, as well as compering a special panel on the main seminar stage.

“I was approached by the Materials & Finishes Show team last year and was instantly impressed with what the organisers have been doing to redevelop the show for the market,” says Robin. “As a working chippy and active member of the wider carpentry and joinery community, I know that there’s a real appetite for this type of UK event for our community.”

According to report by Timber Development UK, Timber import statistics for November 2023 show the market continued to improve in 2023, relative to 2022, with total import volumes for the full year likely to be only slightly behind 2022’s figures. Import volumes in the month of November 2023 were 0.9% higher than in November 2022. The deficit in the cumulative annual volume of the UK’s timber and panel imports after

11 months of 2023, compared to the same period in 2022, reduced once again to stand at around 117,000m3 – down from 123,000m3 last month. This cumulative reduction in volume of all imports in 2023 to November over 2022 was 1.3%.

Screwfix launches ‘Trade Link’ to help tradespeople to support the future generation

Screwfix, the omnichannel retailer, has launched Trade Link to promote the wealth of careers available in the trades.

Trade Link is a dedicated hub on Screwfix’s website offering advice and support to tradespeople on how they can support the next generation to go into the trades.

Supporting its more than 11m customers, Trade Link offers simple guidance on how tradespeople can go about hiring an apprentice, as well as

explaining how tradespeople can support students aged 16-19 years studying T–Level qualifications, which require industry experience alongside classroom learning.

Customers will be able to read case studies from fellow tradespeople about their experience, explore guidance about recruiting apprentices and see how Screwfix is supporting the future of the trade across its business.

New partnership offers BFM members an ethical ‘health check’

British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) has unveiled a new partnership at the January Furniture Show, which gives its members a cost-effective route to tracking ethical compliance.

The Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit (SMETA) is a comprehensive social compliance audit available to BFM member companies at a discounted rate via new partner, Verisio.

The audit is based on International Labor Organization (ILO) standards

and the Ethical Trade Initiative (ETI) base code, which is used by Verisio’s auditors across the globe.

“The SMETA audit is a really good way to health check a business,” says Leon Reed, CEO and founder of Verisio. “Our service operates across industries, in both manufacturing and retail, and we have conducted many factory audits for furniture suppliers both in the UK and globally.”

Woodworking Technology: fourth quarter still declining

After the growth of recent years, another negative quarter is expected for the processing industry of wood and woodbased materials, according to a survey carried out by the Studies Office of Acimall, the association of Italian woodworking and furniture technology manufacturers.

The October-December 2023 figures show an overall

reduction of orders by 23.6 percent compared to the same period of 2022, resulting from the combination of incoming orders from abroad (minus 6.3 percent) and a sharp decline in domestic demand (minus 48.1 percent), largely due to a waitand-see attitude encouraged by the expected implementation of the new “Industria 5.0” measures.

Furniture manufacturers secure Made Smarter backing

SME manufacturers in the furniture sector are the latest to secure backing from Made Smarter’s trailblazing adoption programme. Weaver Dane, Saxon Furniture, Neal Jones Furniture, Evertaut and Contour Campervan Furniture are among the latest wave of businesses starting their digitalisation journey to benefit their bottom line and the environment

Thus far, 300 businesses have received matched funding from the government-funded, industry-backed initiative, adopting technologies as diverse as sensors, robotics, 3D printing and artificial intelligence (AI).

Contour Campervan Furniture, a campervan converter and designer and manufacturer of bespoke

furniture, has adopted CNC machinery with Made Smarter’s support.

Co-founders Caitlin Green and Tom Lake said: “This technology has enabled us to bring production of our birch plywood campervan furniture in-house. We can now produce more, have improved quality control over our product, and can innovate and create new products much more quickly. This has helped us to create jobs, made us a more profitable company and significantly reduced our lead times for our shipped flat-pack campervan furniture.”

Saxon Furniture, sofa and chair manufacturer, based in Bolton, invested in automation to improve its cutting process. “This project will ensure that we continue to upskill our workforce, as well as improve our efficiencies in the cutting department,” says Roger Little, operations director.

Chris Smalley, Co-owner, said: “The gains of this new technology are quite staggering. We are going to have real-time access to production data for the first time. This will undoubtedly contribute to the growth of the business.”

Weaver Dane, a bespoke kitchen and bedroom furniture manufacturer in Northwich, has been supported by Made Smarter to invest in data and systems integration technologies.

Panelco’s latest Innovation Insight event leads with Egger

Panelco held another of its superb Innovation Insight events in February, featuring a strong presence from market leader Egger showing its brand new UK stock programme, the Decorative Collection 24+. John Legg went along to find out more.

What has become a key date on the calendar for designers, specifiers and manufacturers across the UK furniture and joinery industry, Panelco’s excellent Innovation Days have continued to grow in popularity and evolve in ambition, and this February’s event proved no exception with strong visitor attendance and interest across the two days to appreciate the wide variety of premium decorative surfacing options on offer from Panelco.

The main draw for many visitors at this event was to get hands-on with Egger’s brand new stock programme for the UK. Only days after the global launch of its Decorative Collection 24+, Egger put on a typically confident display and commanded much of Panelco’s impressive showroom to present its new product offer.

The Decorative Collection 24+ is undoubtedly an important new collection and it will surely be a very popular option – even a mainstay – for manufacturers and designers using board, worktops, laminate and edging. For the first time, Egger has said it will be a constantly evolving collection, a rolling concept updated every two years, with all new products valid for at least four years.

For its part, Panelco is of course stocking this collection in its entirety – in stock and accessible in all formats.

Chiefly in the new collection, Egger has unveiled amazing new textures, creating

convincing and realistic metallic, woodgrain and stone finishes. In addition, there is a clear focus on smooth matt surfaces, on-trend solid colours and luxurious woodgrains.

Trio of brands set to collaborate for Materials & Finishes Show live demonstration debut

Three of the furniture manufacturing and joinery industries leading brands have announced that they will collaborate as part of the brand new Live Demo Zone at Materials & Finishes Show this May.

Leitz Tooling UK, Advance Machinery Services (AMS) and The Joinery Network will work together on the show floor to produce a full timber window manufacturing demonstration, with two live demos taking place on each day of the UK’s trade show for the furniture manufacturing and joinery industries.

Visitors will be able to see the end-to-end production of the timber window frame, which will be expertly crafted utilising an AMS-distributed Wadkin Bursgreen woodworking

machine and Lignum tooling supplied by Leitz Tooling and The Joinery Network’s Owen Dare.

This is the first time that visitors to Materials & Finishes

Show (formerly W Exhibition) will have seen brands collaborate in this way as part of the brand new demonstration feature within the exhibition.

BFM Furniture Component Expo puts new innovation centre stage

The BFM’s inaugural Future Component Expo will host an Innovation Trail, giving exhibitors at the event a new approach to reaching key audiences with their products and services.

Under the process, exhibitors can apply to feature in a pitch of their product or service to potential buyers at the show.

All submissions must be for a new product or service and have an intended commercial launch before the end of March 2024.

The audience will be asked to vote for their favourite and the winner – as well as getting the opportunity to present to an influential audience – will also receive post event publicity, organised by the BFM, including content across the trade association’s website and social

media channels.

“The FCExpo 2024 Innovation Trail will offer a great opportunity for exhibitors to engage with a buying audience,” comments Phil Spademan, MD of the BFM.

“Each entrant has a timed, five minute sales pitch in which to

get across as much information as they can to the audience. The submissions selected to pitch will demonstrate real innovation and address key issues facing the furniture industry.”

Exhibitors wishing to take part can complete the online application and explain how

their innovation meets the criteria with any supporting material. Entry is free.

Recently, the BFM announced that the BFM London Fabric Show is also being moved to run alongside the event at Telford.

Xylexpo returns to Milan this Spring

The biennial international exhibition of woodworking technology and components for the furniture industry is back in May. After the pandemic emergency, the exhibition is restoring its traditional schedule in the spring season, from 21st to 24th May 2024.

Since 1968, Xylexpo – promoted by Acimall, the association of Italian woodworking machinery and tools – has been favoured by industry operators for its comprehensive overview of the woodworking business, illustrating the evolution of the

market towards sustainability and digital transformation.

Recognised as the international exhibition of high technology for woodworking operations, Xylexpo will be the starting point for the innovation cycle of the 2024-2026 period, reaffirming its purpose of previewing the new solutions that the companies will present to a highly qualified audience.

An international review Xylexpo showcases the excellence of “made in Italy”, while welcoming solutions, technologies, tools and

AES to host ‘open house’ this March

From Thursday 21st March

through to Sunday 24th

March, AES Group Machinery UK Ltd will present its allnew working showroom, showcasing some of its most popular models of machines. During this ‘open house’ event, AES will welcome both existing and potential new customers to its all-new facility where members from AES, along with supporting companies, will be present to demonstrate and discuss all aspects of manufacturing with wood-based products. The key product groups include:

Panel sizing

The AES Beta Beamsaw will be premiered at the event. This all-new model is designed for the medium-sized manufacturer looking for an accurate, reliable panel sizing and optimising machine. The machine being demonstrated will have a 3200mm cutting length and is capable of cutting three 18mm boards in a single operation. Both the rear pusher and saw carriage are high-speed to allow quicker cycle times.

Nesting

On demonstration will be another exclusive UK launch of the all-new AES Super Nova machine. This latest design boasts an enclosed gantry with LED light panels showing the status of the machine. The machine on display will be suitable for jumbo-sized MFC boards and is complete with a rotary tool changer, two 250m3 vacuum pumps, face drilling and a choice of operating software.

Through feed nesting

The AES Extreme Ultra Line machine is a must for anyone looking to step up from a stand-alone nesting machine. The machine on demonstration will have a lift table capable of holding 25 x 18mm boards, automatic referencing/squaring with automatic labelling of parts before machining takes place.

The board is then automatically loaded, drilled, nested, and the machined parts are pushed off onto a takeoff conveyor with cleaning. The bed is then automatically cleaned whilst automatically

loading the next panel, resulting in a continual production cycle.

CNC drilling

The popular Sirius 950M and Go 1300M ATC machines will be available for demonstration. Both machines can drill on all five sides and are equipped with a router head. The Sirius has a 950mm working width whilst the Go has a generous 1300mm and is also equipped with an automatic tool changer. Both machines have a userfriendly parametric software for programming parts with ease.

Door processing

One of the most popular AES machines sold in the UK is the Vega series of machines which are of pod and rail design and can be equipped with a doublesided horizontal router head to cut the locks and recess for the hinges. The machines are also equipped with face drilling and end drilling and can be supplied with an aggregate for cutting into the head or base of the door for concealed closers.

doors and for creating complex shapes, the AES five-axis machines with increased Z height can be used for manufacturing furniture and components.

Software

The AES machines can only be described as a softwareneutral machine, namely any manufacturer can decide which software is best for them.

J & C O’Meara to host open house event this March

The CNC machines on display will include machines for drilling, standalone nesting, through feed nesting with labelling, CNC for door production, as well as the all-new AES Beta beamsaw. The AES CNC machines are universal and are not reliant on machine-specific software. They can therefore be supplied with several CAD/ CAM solutions, allowing an easy integration to users who may already have a preferred software package. Kundig prepares for Spring open house event

Long-established wide belt and edge sanding machinery specialist, Kundig of Switzerland, is delighted to invite both existing and potential customers to its first major open house event being held at its new showroom in Burscough, Lancashire.

A special preview of the all-new Kundig Master will be available for demonstration, providing an ideal solution for both solid wood and veneer sanding. This new model brings a higher level of specification with features including a generous 200mm working height and the latest Sigmatek touch screen control.

As with all Kundig wide belt sanding machines, the new Kundig Master has a fixed working height, i.e. the conveyor table is fixed to the lower frame of the machine, and it is the sanding group in the upper frame that raises and lowers to

the desired working height. Also included in this latest version of the popular Master series of machines is the Enormatic feature for automatic setting.

The new Kundig Master is available with either two or three sanding heads, with the most popular being the two belt machines with 1st contact roller for accurate calibration, followed by a segmented pad for secondary sanding and sanding veneers. All Master machines will also have a working width of 1350mm and will be a must-have for furniture makers and fire door manufacturers alike.

The Kundig Perfect will also be demonstrated and is, in essence, the successor to the popular ‘Brilliant’ series of machines. The Kundig Perfect has a new modern design with black high gloss panels to the left side of the machine, as well as to the front, where

the controls for operating the machine are housed. As with the former Brilliant series, at least one of the sanding heads on the Perfect will offer oblique sanding technology and therefore will be the choice for companies needing to achieve a flawless finish, especially for painted, lacquered or high gloss surfaces. The machine being demonstrated is the Perfect 1350 REd-L, suitable for solid wood, veneer and lacquer sanding.

As well as the wide belt sanding machines, there will be a selection of the Uniq edge sanding machines on display. All Kundig Uniq machines use a 200mm high sanding belt which has programmable oscillation to optimise the use of the sanding belt. The machine can sand bevelled edges with ease as the sanding head tilts, allowing the workpiece to always remain flat on the

working table.

The Uniq has two working sides, one where the abrasive is exposed – usually for solid wood sanding, the other having platens for fine sanding, such as veneered edges. The two working tables are stepped to allow both sides to be worked simultaneously using different parts of the abrasive.

Versions of the Kundig Uniq-S with automatic integrated feed will also be on display, along with the New Kundig Flash which has been specifically developed for sanding the edges of sealed/painted edges.

Most of us appreciate that sustainability is high on the agenda – can you give insight as to how AkzoNobel Wood Finishes’ campaign came to life?

We wanted to raise awareness of AkzoNobel Wood Finishes’ position as the partner of choice when it comes to driving sustainability for customers in the wood coatings industry. We want customers to think of us as the first-choice supplier that can help them become more sustainable and meet their ESG targets.

How do you feel furniture and joinery manufacturers in the UK might respond?

We believe furniture and joinery manufacturers will appreciate the opportunity to learn more about the holistic approach that AkzoNobel has towards sustainability. It’s a topic that’s high on the corporate agenda. We’re happy to showcase our performance in this area and share the proof points of what we do

across different areas of sustainability.

It hopefully gives our customers more knowledge and insights into how they can strengthen their sustainability agenda and how we can work together to achieve their goals.

The latest EDGETEQ S-500 edge banders and LOOPTEQ automated workpiece return systems from HOMAG combine to offer more flexibility and innovative technology for fast, efficient and reliable production. With the ability to use PUR, EVA or airTec edge fixing solutions, the S-500 edge banders provide complete versatility. The EDGETEQ S-500 now offers more flexibility due to the extended range of trimming units available. The MS40 multilevel trimming unit, the MF60 Servotrim multifunction profile trimming unit and the MN11 profile scraper for two profiles can now be specified on the EDGETEQ S-500. They provide access to an even wider array of production possibilities.

Premium quality trimming is achieved thanks to vibration-free rotation and long tool service life achieved with the HSK interfaces for the post-processing units. Setup times are also minimised due to three-profile technology for the four-motor FF32 profile trimming unit and automatic adjustment of the glue joint scraper.

A choice of edge gluing technologies

The method of fixing edges to panels defines the quality and capabilities of the finished furniture. The EDGETEQ S-500 provides the option of using the standard EVA glue, PUR for a stronger, more moisture/heat resistant bond or HOMAG’s airTec zero joint technology.

With the AG12 and AG12 Basic gluing units, the application unit for hot-melt glue can be emptied easily in the machine.

Cleaning time too is reduced due to the pneumatic metering slides on the application unit for hot-melt glue. These close automatically, preventing dirt and reducing the amount of cleaning required.

At the centre of the airTec unit is a rotating fan heater which, in addition to a high level of efficiency, provides a significantly reduced noise output. All laser-compatible edging types currently available can be processed with airTec. This offers increased versatility for materials and colours.

The airTec system delivers better efficiency and minimises resource usage with the even air flow ensuring a high quality, zero joint at all times.

Rapid changeover times between airTec and traditional gluing technology help improve productivity further and it is all controlled via the intuitive powerTouch2 control screen.

Increased productivity with LOOPTEQ automated return systems

LOOPTEQ return systems are designed to optimise the entire edging process in furniture production. The material flow is automated and ordered, making the edge banding machine more efficient. The result is a leaner manufacturing process regardless of whether it is batch size 1 customer-specific orders, or high volume work.

The LOOPTEQ return systems enable one person to operate the edge banding cell easily. With a single or dual transfer gantry, parts are turned and transferred accordingly, supplied to the edge banding machine or ejected from the process. Workpieces with finished edging are transported out or can be stacked ready for the ongoing processes.

A further advantage of LOOPTEQ return systems is the virtual elimination of workpiece damage caused through manual handling. The return systems can manage a wide range of parts, from small, lightweight panels to large heavyweight workpieces.

Even delicate surfaces such as those with an aluminium or stainless steel look can be handled without problems.

HOMAG’s STORETEQ F-100 + SAWTEQ S-200 cell increases productivity

The latest storage, retrieval and panel dividing cell from HOMAG is designed to significantly increase production efficiency, offer layout flexibility and eliminate board damage. It is the ideal stepping stone into automation, managing board storage and providing a just in time machine feed system all within a small footprint.

“This new production cell can be laid out in various configurations,” enthuses Charles Smith, BU Dividing Product Manager at HOMAG UK. He continues, “Its versatility means it can be configured for installation in areas that are very limited by available floor space.

“Because of its modular design, it has the capacity to be specified exactly to suit the needs of your business. The package includes a STORETEQ F-100 single-axis storage and retrieval system which feeds a

The STORETEQ features a gantry design frame with a moveable lifting device that has the ability to feed single or multiple machines.

“The lifting unit has a crossbeam with suction cups to handle boards up to a maximum weight of 250 kg. It can also rotate the boards up to 90 degrees, thus enabling the board storage areas to be located either to the left, right or at the back of the saw and facilitate the loading of materials in the optimum orientation.”

The STORETEQ F-100 speeds up production

This complete integrated solution results in significantly higher saw performance, allowing more time for other value-added manufacturing processes. The gantry for the automatic feeder does not require any

additional intermediate suspensions or cross bracing for a span of up to 12 metres, further optimising space utilisation.

The cell uses a standard interface which means both machines are already configured and ready to use without additional service support. Like the larger HOMAG P-300 panel storage system, the STORETEQ F-100 is powered by the woodStore 8 software.

When paired with optimiser software, it efficiently manages all aspects of storage, from linking the purchasing system with order processing, to managing off-cuts and optimising material movements. Harnessing woodstore 8’s off-cut management module, the F-100 provides complete cataloguing and managing of useable off-cut panels.

The Egger Group launched its Decorative Collection 24+ in February, complete with

over 300 boards and more than 100 new colours and decors. The new collection includes elegant and understated wood decors, matt and velvety plain colours as well as classic material reproductions that impress with their realistic embossings. Numerous PerfectSense lacquer boards with wood and plain decors are part of the collection.

Polyrey: Collection 2024

Collection 2024 from French manufacturer, Polyrey, also offers a wide selection, with over 440 boards. There are more than 230 plain colours and 200 decors, including over 90 new products. According to Polyrey, the collection features an “explosive” mix of current trends, from Terrazzo and mosaique decors to material reproductions in OSB.

Resopal: 2024 Collection

A new stock programme from Resopal has been available since mid-January, expanded to include various neutral colours and another matt surface. Out of 335 boards with 149 plain colours and 186 decors, 71

colours and decors are new. The Meran Oak surfaces, a modern yet rustic version of oak, and the light-coloured Ventura Elm decor are particularly eye-catching.

The Formica Collection

The Formica group, which also includes Homapal, will launch a new collection in mid-March. The Ostermann experts are expecting more than 40 new items and will be offering the right edgings in time for the start of the collection.

Could you tell us more about recent developments at Camco?

In 2023, we invested in a new slitting line to provide a better service to our valued customer base. It’s proven to be a great success as we can slit any width and ship the next day nationwide.

As this service became more popular, we saw a massive increase in orders and quickly ran out of space, prompting our decision to move to a larger building in order to facilitate the jumbo roll stock. In December we moved into a new 12,000 sq. ft. warehouse and are now installing our second slitting line.

How will the new facilities and equipment enhance Camco’s offering?

Our new warehouse is not only 12000 sq. ft., but it also offers a new storage system that is nine metres high, providing over 2000 pallet spaces. This allows us to carry more stock to fulfil the increase in order intake.

With two slitting lines, we can now increase the output of special sizes on a next-day basis, and we also offer a recoiling service for customers that require small quantity rolls.

Our website now offers a full colourmatching tool, so customers can quickly find an edge-to-board match.

What are you currently observing when it comes to industry trends/ demand for edgebanding, and how is Camco particularly well-equipped to cater for this? In recent times, we have seen a lot of customers requiring edging to match paint colours. With our new colour matching service, we are able to provide customers with edging to match most paints, such as Farrow & Ball, Deluxe and many more.

As well as this, we also offer digital printed edgebanding which enables us to print any decor on the ABS. No other UK company offers this service that we are aware of.

Could you describe your business and its edgebanding specialties?

Our Lange range has been with us since 2007, but we as a company have been involved with edgebanders since 1998.

Our typical customer base for these machines is kitchen and bedroom manufacturers. Machines we supplied back in 2009 are still going strong, with customers also adding second machines since that date.

We have two very experienced engineers who concentrate solely on edgebanding machines. This is key as they are a very difficult machine to understand, so experience is everything.

What are the key considerations concerning edgebanding technology?

I would say the key considerations are:

• Types of edgebanding and different applications. Mainly in the flat panel industry, using 0.8 and 2mm edging material.

• Types of machines. We have a great range of products available from entry

level up to our L motion series with CNC setting.

• Performance levels. The performance of an edgebander can be compromised by a poor supply network. For example, wet compressed air and poor dust extraction. Upon anyone requesting a quote for a machine, the first question we ask is “What supplies do you have?” If these are good, then the next is an operator who understands the machine. If you have these elements correct, then you will ensure the best performance.

• Ancillary equipment (cleaners etc). We offer a wide range of “bolt-on” products, such as cleaning stations on entry and exit and standalone glue pot cleaning stations for all our machines.

Could you tell us more about the range of machines you can offer and their capabilities?

We have a wide range of machines available to us with a wide range of capabilities, but the L Motion is a machine that takes you to the next level, as everything is set through the screen and not by hand.

How would you describe your lead times, installation, training and after-sales support?

Stick to “innovability” – choose your adhesives responsibly

The furniture industry has seen a clear shift towards sustainability and environmental topics. Important drivers have been new legal regulations and frameworks, but also initiatives of big players from within the industry itself who continuously push for sustainable solutions and processes for their products.

This is when the use of adhesives has moved into focus, with a revision of current practices throughout the different processes and applications. One main goal is to reduce the overall volume of adhesives to reduce the impact of transport, production and all aspects directly related to volume and weight.

For foiling and edgebanding applications the polyurethane hotmelt adhesive is an ideal solution. With a lower grammage (glue weight) in application, it also features an extraordinary resistance to heat, vapour and solvents that conceivably outperforms other hotmelts like EVA or polyolefin-based adhesives.

This shift to reduced glue volumes came along with a noticeable quality improvement. This phenomenon is today known under the term “innovability”:

developing innovative solutions to promote sustainability that, in the best case, lead to even better products and results.

With regards to hotmelt PUR adhesives, Italian glue manufacturer, TAKA, has picked up the innovability approach and worked on the further improvement of sustainability aspects. The outcome has been two complete product lines that respond to different needs as requested by the market.

TAKA has launched a range of bio-based PUR adhesives that are already today in compliance with the industry’s roadmap and goals up to the year 2030. TAKA is committed to selecting bio-based content only from suppliers who have the same goals of sustainable growth, as well as traceability and transparency of raw materials.

The formulation of bio-based PUR adhesives includes a significant content of renewable raw materials while improving process efficiency and adhesive properties. These new products have been successfully introduced, especially in edgebanding processes and the lamination of wood-based profiles and panels.

The second product range focuses on occupational safety and health protection.

TAKA has grouped these new products under the name “low emission systems” (LESS), as they feature a reduced content of free isocyanate monomers of less than 0.1%.

Industrial ventilation & recycling – creating value from waste

With the expansion of a range of production services carried out onsite, a scenic construction company based in London contacted Fercell to explore their options for implementing an LEV and recycling system.

The system needed to encompass a variety of LEV (local exhaust ventilation) processes, including the extraction of weld fume, a spray extraction facility and a dust booth for the capture of any dust particulate created during various woodworking applications.

With a large proportion of product created using wood, the client was also keen to consider the possibilities of recycling their wood waste and, furthermore, utilising the output to provide a resource for biomass heating.

The installation incorporated a broad suite of local exhaust ventilation solutions, consisting of dust extraction, with a CAP4 dust booth, weld fume, with MEF-500 suction fan set and ASA-3 extraction

arms, spray extraction with a purpose-built finishing room equipped with services extraction and product drying room. In addition, each LEV system benefits from noise mitigation facilities.

The system allows the client to carry out, more productively, a variety of construction activities safely and effectively.

Dust extraction

Installation of the dust booth allows for the immediate removal of any dust clouds for a mix of process operations, including sanding, grinding and welding operations.

As a standalone solution, it is equipped with aluminised polyester filter cartridges and a pulse-jet compressed air filter cleaning system, to deposit any dust collected in removable collection trays located at the base of the booth for easy emptying and disposal. The integral

suction fan ensures complete face velocity across the full width of the booth.

Eminently flexible, the CAP-series of booths are available in a range of sizes, from varied construction materials, filter media and control functions.

Fercell was able to determine the ideal size and specification required to meet the customers’ requirements.

To provide optimum ventilation for the metal fabrication process, a series of ASA-3 extractions were installed.

Perfect for the removal of grinding dust, cutting and welding fumes for metalworking, each arm consists of five friction joints, with a wall bracket able to rotate 180°, making them extremely easy to position to the desired location.

The various suction arms are connected to the backward-bladed, self-cleaning impeller equipped, MEF-500 energy-saving fan by a centralised galvanised suction ducting system.

The MEF fan is enclosed within a BHseries soundbox, which not only offers additional protection from environmental factors, but reduces the sound output levels by approximately 10 - 15 db(A), while the electric motor is cooled with air pulled through a low-level grid in the base of the soundbox.

Spray extraction

A designated area for specialised finishing and coatings required the installation of a spray extraction system.

The solution consisted of a combination, including dedicated finishing and drying rooms, separated and connected by a series of full-height, sliding access doors.

The finishing room is serviced by multipoint dry filtration, mounted within a spray wall, ideal for increased paint spraying extraction capacity, providing a perfect

space for product finishing processes to take place.

The dry filtration media used is ecofriendly, manufactured from heavy-weight pleated card, which is flame-retardant and easily disposable, designed for the capture and containment of overspray from spray finishing applications.

The filters are formed of a concertina, two-part, construction works with inertia separation, with any spray particles passing through a tortuous route and sticking to the media in holding pockets of the air stream.

The drying room enclosure is fully sealed for isolation from the main production areas, ensuring a controlled, clean working space. To prevent cross-contamination of processes, the room is both internally and externally controlled by balanced or positive air pressure, regulated with makeup air drawn through efficient filtration from the main production area.

Shredding for Biomass

Recycling the client’s wood waste not only reduced their disposal costs, but created a valuable resource to be utilised to reduce their operating costs through the colder months. The properties of wood make it easy to break down and reduce in size through the process of crushing.

The solution, the PY1300 pre-breaker, processes wood waste into small parts (<A5) which can then be easily hand-fed

into the CA-S Warm Burning Space Heater.

The PY1300 is a pre-crusher ideal for breaking down bulky material into manageable-sized pieces. Any wood waste is broken down using an over-sized screw flight, which can reduce waste by up to 80%.

Material is loaded into the PY hopper where it is automatically processed and discharged into an appropriate container, for storage until ready to use. The PY1300 senses when there’s no material and will automatically switch itself off, providing an energy-efficient solution.

With waste wood product ideal for conversion into biofuel, crushed wood output can be placed directly into the CA-S 600, 180kW, wood burning, space heater. The heater is designed to work with a mixture of fuels, including chipboard, MDF, hardwoods, softwoods, pallets, wood offcuts and wood briquettes.

The hand-fed warm air heater offers a flexible, robust solution for wood waste disposal and commercial heating through the combustion of solid fuel, in this case, wood chips. By operating the heater, the client not only reduces their waste, but also reduces their carbon footprint.

Ecogate® saver for Planova

Dust and fume extraction specialist, Extractly Ltd, has recently completed the installation of a new extraction system, incorporating Ecogate® energy-saving technology, at Planova UK’s manufacturing facility in Leeds, West Yorkshire.

Founded in Denmark, in 1964, Planova has grown to be a world-leading provider of specialist shop fitting solutions and shelving systems, transforming retail spaces and reinforcing market branding for a host of blue-chip clients. Today the business is delivering turnkey project solutions to customers across four continents and, in 2020, Planova (UK) Ltd amalgamated with Leeds-based Bartuf Ltd; making it a part of the global Planova group.

Production capabilities at Planova’s production centre in Leeds, formerly Bartuf’s headquarters, have been enhanced over recent months with the company’s investment in a fully-equipped

timber processing department, and Ian Rayner, Extractly’s National Sales Manager, was invited to submit proposals for appropriate dust extraction equipment to meet the expected demand.

“With only a few machines requiring extraction, and a clear, modern factory space to work with, system design was by no means over-complicated,” says Ian, “but, what was obvious to me straight away was the potential energy and cost-savings we could provide for Planova by incorporating Ecogate® ‘on-demand’ energy-saving extraction technology.”

By their very nature, the diverse joinery commissions undertaken at Planova require bespoke machining, and this new dust extraction installation provides a perfect illustration of how Ecogate® technology can offer significant benefits to any woodworking operation; however large or small.

a couple of key factors we had to take into consideration with the installation at Planova. The company was naturally keen to get underway with production as soon as possible, but not all of the new woodworking machines could be delivered on the same lead times, and delays with the provision of a new 415-volt 3-phase connection from the electricity grid, which was required to power the new 30kW main fan and associated electrical control gear, was also having a knock-on effect with a commissioning date for the new extraction system.

However, Extractly was able to offer Planova a temporary extraction solution. “Ian Rayner arranged for a multi-filter bagging unit to be made available to us, on loan for several months, until we had everything in place and ready for the new system to be installed,” says Jonathan Richards, Operational Director at Planova. “Having the bagging unit in place allowed for machine utilisation, on a staggered basis, as the various pieces of equipment were installed and commissioned, and enabled us to commence production in the new workshop earlier than anticipated.

“Once we were in a position to give them the go-ahead, one of Extractly’s teams of installation engineers, along with the Ecogate technicians, had the new, permanent system up and running within a week.”

Planova’s workshop currently includes a Holzher beam saw and edgebander, along with a couple of CNC machines, and a

second edgebander is due to be installed soon. With all five machines in operation at the same time, a filter unit capable of extracting around 20,000 cubic metres of dust-laden air per hour was going to be required. Extractly supplied and installed an LBR-B 2HJ SmartFilter unit; an advanced, modular, reverse air baghouse, externallysited on a compact footprint of just 2.4m x 2.4m which, if additional capacity is ever required, can be easily extended by simply adding further modules.

Contaminated air enters the filter through an inlet where larger dust particles drop out of the airstream, and finer particles are captured by an array of highly efficient SUPERBAG filters which allow cleaned air to pass through and vent to atmosphere. As the captured dust accumulates on the filter bags, two 1.1kW regeneration fans blow air in the reverse direction to dislodge the dust; allowing it to drop into the lower hopper section from where it’s collected in

steel dust bins located below the hopper.

“As this is a completely new extraction system, Planova have no previous electricity bills to compare and calculate the savings achieved with Ecogate® installed, but energy usage is continuously monitored, and data gathered by the Ecogate® greenBOX® Nxt controller automatically calculates the ongoing savings being made when compared to energy consumption with the fan running at full power, all day, every day,” says Ian Rayner. “In a traditional system, a 30kW fan, running continually at full power would typically consume around 60,000kW of electricity per year – with Ecogate® installed, we predict the effective payback period for Planova’s investment will be less than three years.”

Since Ecogate® technology controls the extraction, the main fan will run ‘ondemand’, in real-time, at the exact speed necessary to maintain optimum extraction; for Planova, this also means that no excess energy will be consumed prior to installation of the second edgebander … but the system is ready to connect and deliver efficient extraction from day one.

In conclusion, Jonathan Richards had nothing but praise for the part Extractly played in getting the new department set up: “We couldn’t have got the joinery shop up and running as quickly as we did without the temporary extraction they provided and now, with everything working efficiently, I can definitely say that Ecogate® does exactly what it says on the tin!”

Cascading fans within the extraction unit save energy by utilising the pneumatic slide dampers fitted to each machine. Pressure control switches monitor the pressure in the main duct to control the speeds of the fans to achieve the volumes required on demand.

The cleaning system is a reverse air pulse that is differential pressure-controlled to activate when required to relieve the filter socks. Level indicators monitor the silo and dumpsters to ensure maximum efficiency at all times.

Waste drops through a rotary valve into a transport fan system that feeds a wood waste burner to heat water within the factory heating system.

Grate Expectations

Chris Franklin MD at Ranheat Engineering – a leading UK manufacturer of wood combustion equipment – continues his series of articles for Furniture and Joinery Production. This issue, he looks at how different types of industrial wood waste need a different approach as to how they burn in a wood combustion system.

Not all types of wood waste burn in the same way; it depends on the make-up of the material being burned. With the everincreasing use of man-made boards in the UK woodworking industry, the makeup of wood waste can vary from fine dusts through to solid chips from a wood chipper.

Industrial users using wood waste to heat their factories are already governed by strict rules, but it is expected that these rules will change with the emission levels lowered. The strict emission limits that apply to systems over 90kgs/hour wood consumption do not apply below the 90kg limit.

Ranheat, over the last 40 years, have developed a series of combustion systems from simple retorts to complex step and moving grates designed to meet the wide variety of wood wastes they are presented with.

The simplest “fixed “retorts have no moving parts and are generally refractory lined. Whichever system is chosen, the air distribution within the combustion system is important. Primary air is needed during combustion to get the wood waste burning, while in the burning process wood gasses are given off. These gases are mixed with secondary air at a higher level, and these then ignite and burn at high temperatures.

As well as considering the production of these secondary combustion gasses, we must also consider the make-up of the gasses produced. This is caused by the chemical reaction between the constituent parts of the combustion process. We have Carbon present in the fuel itself and also Nitrogen in the fuel. We also have air, which contains Nitrogen and Oxygen. During the combustion process, complex chemical reactions are taking place and the production of compounds or gasses is also produced.

The Government, through the Environmental Permitting Note 5/1 (18), sets limit to these analytes. When a combustion system is tested annually by an independent laboratory as part of a part B permit, tests are taken of all the analytes. There are some simple rules that Ranheat follow, and they refer to them as the “3 T’s” – Temperature, Time and Turbulence. The air and the gases mixing in a hot environment must be hot enough, be in the combustion zone long enough (often referred to as residence time) and, finally, mixed together well enough.

By altering the design of the combustion system and by controlling primary and secondary air, you can affect the chemical composition of the flue gasses.

Experience and Research & Development have led Ranheat to optimal designs for their extensive range of retorts and grates by controlling the location of the introduction of the air (primary air through the material burning) and secondary air above the level of the burning.

The production of oxides of Nitrogen

NOx and Carbon Monoxide CO can be controlled and varied. Particulate or “grit” is a mechanical separation, not a chemical reaction. (Ranheat use ceramic filter filtration systems)

Ranheat also use a system of removable retorts and grates so the combustion system slides into the boiler base which is normally air cooled and brick lined. The cooling air is actually the combustion air. By heating the combustion air, you increase boiler efficiency. Ranheat also use a system of refractory arches to provide radiant heat above the burning fuel charge. Ranheat are constantly working on and improving the grate and retort designs. The use of flue gas recirculation systems mixing some of the flue gases (with 9% Oxygen) back with the combustion air (with 21% Oxygen) to reduce the Oxygen content of the primary combustion air to reduce the amount of NOx produced on the grate and in primary combustion. Whichever Ranheat system you go for, or indeed any wood fired installation using waste wood, still must meet all current regulations. You are still legally required to obtain planning, chimney height approval and permits to enable you to legally burn wood-waste. This can be in the form of an exemption from the EA for up to 50kgs per hour, or a permit for a SWIP or a full part B permit.

Lamello – engaging with the industry’s future

For over 50 years, Lamello has been a driving force behind the woodworking industry’s future. Already a permanent fixture on the curriculum for many woodworking schools and colleges across mainland Europe, Lamello is now working closer than ever with furniture and joinery colleges in the UK to help grow and nurture the furniture makers of tomorrow.

The importance put on employer engagement and industry integration is pivotal to the college’s ongoing success. In recent years, joinery courses have become a growth sector for the college and with a new joinery course set to start at the college’s Braintree campus next September and T-levels starting in Colchester in 2024, welcoming pioneering companies like Lamello to take part in talks and practical demonstrations is another step towards helping and encouraging students on their chosen career paths.

This day-long employer-set project would see Level 3 furniture students use Lamello’s Zeta P2 and P-system fixings – which are loaned to the college during term time – to build an off-set shelving unit. “From adjusting the multifunctional stop square on the Zeta P2 and performing the right depth of cut, to using the correct connectors for the application in the right way, it was designed to put everything they had been taught to the test,” says Chris.

Mirka’s Galaxy provides optimal finish

With continued growth driving diversification, R & R Joinery director Richard Wardale had an issue to address –that of his staff having to use a wide range of abrasives for the broader variety of jobs the company was now winning.

“The main work we carry out is commercial joinery which includes solid surface, all types of hardwood, veneer, laminates, lacquers and paints – and we also do work for the commercial catering industry for blue chip clients,” says Richard, “in the commercial catering space, we create solid surface worktops and panels for commercial kitchens – with the help of Mirka’s tools and abrasives.

“For the work we carry out, abrasives are a key part of the preparation and finishing process, but there were two specific issues we have faced. The first was the fact that the team was constantly having to change the abrasives on jobs, which reduced the efficiency of the task. The second was the number of abrasives we had in

stock to do the work. To counteract these issues, we upgraded to the Mirka Galaxy abrasive range and doing this has enabled the business to streamline the abrasive portfolio our employees can choose from. This, in turn, has allowed us to save money when purchasing consumables, which we have then reinvested in the business.”

Since making the upgrade, R & R have not looked back, and have noticed two distinct benefits. The first being that Mirka Galaxy’s wide range of grits (p40-p2000) ensures they can choose the right grit for the job at hand. Its versatility also means it is suitable for use on both solid surface and wood, so they do not have to change abrasives depending on the surface.

The second is that Galaxy’s multi-hole design ensures there is less dust being produced and this has made both our employees and customers very happy.

Another key issue is of course the true cost of abrasives. “We decided to fix the issue when we noticed how much we were spending on abrasives,” said Richard. “In the beginning I was not 100% sure if there was an abrasive out there that was hard-wearing enough and could handle the demands of our work.

“This all changed once we did our due diligence and tested Mirka Galaxy on one of the solid surface jobs we were working on. When using it we noticed it was tough and durable and the ceramic grain, which was new to us, provided a consistent cut that was as effective on the first use as it was on the last.

“Like any good business we did our research, we had recommendations from our peers, but as we were already a Mirka customer we sat down with Steven Page from Mirka to explain what we were looking for. He then came to visit us on site and explained that when using Galaxy over other abrasives we would not have to switch from one abrasive to another and that the ceramic grain was an asset when it came to the lifespan of the abrasive.

“The advice Steven gave us was simple – it was to try the product out on a job to find out its capabilities and whether it suited the jobs the team were doing on a day-to-day basis. This allowed us to come to our own conclusions about whether the abrasive was right for us rather than being pigeon-holed to use a specific abrasive.

“We concluded that Mirka was the right partner for our business because the Galaxy abrasive fits our needs and requirements, which are constantly changing based on the jobs we do, and it came in at a price point that made it viable to work with.”

Hesse Lignal replaces solvent-based products with sustainable alternatives

Hesse Lignal has reached a milestone in its sustainability strategy. The Hamm surface coating specialist has removed all nitrocellulose lacquers and solvent-based acid-curing lacquers from its range as of 1st January 2024. Customers will instead be able to use sustainable alternative products from Hesse Lignal.

“Our transformation process is moving forward as planned,” says Jens Hesse, Managing Director of Hesse Lignal. “By getting out of the nitro lacquer market, we have now achieved an important interim target in our sustainability strategy.”

Over the past few months, the Hamm family business has switched relevant customers over to more sustainable products, enabling it to stop production and distribution of non-sustainable nitrocellulose lacquers and solvent-based acid-curing lacquers as of 1st January 2024.

It will similarly stop offering some solvent-based additives, colourants, pigment concentrates and their associated thinners.

A world worth living in for future generations

“In Spring 2022 we decided to develop a sustainability strategy to fulfil our responsibility as a future-orientated family business with a history across the generations,” explains Jens. Together with Hans J. Hesse, they represent the third and fourth generation to lead the company. “For our children and grandchildren, we want to contribute to creating a world worth living in by minimising environmental harm and impact on the climate.”

This is why the Hesse Board has decided to replace all solvent-based products with sustainable alternatives by 2030. To achieve this, they are pursuing two objectives: On the one hand, the use of volatile organic compounds (VOC) is to be reduced, as these can contribute to the formation of ozone in the lower atmosphere and the development of CO2 which is harmful to the climate. On the other, products that contain fossil raw materials are to be replaced by alternatives made from sustainable raw materials.

“We will continue to work consistently and actively on the development of sustainable products, so that all products with a high VOC content and lacquers made from fossil-based raw materials can be replaced with more climate-friendly alternatives by 2030”

Replacing discontinued products with tested alternatives

“Our colleagues in the departments for Research and Development, Product Management and Sales/Distribution have invested a lot of energy and know-how into developing and testing sustainable alternative products,” reveals Jens. “The more sustainable alternatives available today are water-based products, lacquers made from sustainable raw materials, UV lacquers and natural oils.

The Hesse team is actively supporting the transformation process and, amongst other things, is assisting customers in choosing suitable alternative products.

“Restructuring the first part of our range was a big step for us, but we are still far from reaching our ultimate aim,” concludes Jens. “We will continue to work consistently and actively on the development of sustainable products, so that all products with a high VOC content and lacquers made from fossil-based raw materials can be replaced with more climate-friendly alternatives by 2030.”
