To my eyes at least, it would appear that spring has most definitely sprung and the industry is quickly becoming much more energetic and industrious than has been the case over the last six months or so. February saw the impressive Surface Design Show followed by the excellent Panelco Innovation Event, and into March with kbb Birmingham and most recently I spent time at AES UK’s at home event catching up not only with the AES and J&C O’Meara teams, but also with a group of suppliers from software, panels, tooling, fittings and components.
Despite everything, spring always ushers in a striking effervescence as we look forward to busier schedules, plan for more events and shift into another gear. As we tumble through April and into May, the return of Interzum and Ligna is most welcome. The twin German events –which together create an international beacon for innovation and development in our industry – are returning from their pandemic-enforced slumber to deliver a much needed shot-in-thearm for those who relish getting to grips with our industry on a face to face basis.
Moving forward into April and May we have the opportunity to discover new ideas at three of the most important events of the year, two of them in the UK in Telford and Birmingham, and one in Milan. First up is the new Furniture Component Expo (FC Expo) at Telford International Centre organised by the British Furniture Manufacturers association, this is followed by the Materials & Finishes Show (MAFS) taking place in May and organised by Montgomery Group.
The best trade show fortnight in the calendar begins with the Cologne event for fittings, components and materials runs from May 9-12th (Tues-Fri). Then we travel north east for Ligna in Hanover which takes place from May 15-19th (Mon-Thurs). Typically, Ligna delivers a sea of innovation and upgrades from manufacturers and suppliers of machinery, equipment, tooling, dust extraction and the software side of things.
The rise of smaller open house type events organised by key players in our industry has been keenly reported in the magazine and elsewhere. They continue to be valuable and efficient platforms, creating a more dedicated, affordable and closely managed event, allowing both suppliers and potential customers a calm and controlled environment to have more detailed, one-to-one experiences. In this regard, these events are ideal and will, I am sure, continue to be a welcome part of the events mix.
Both events now sport digital versions of their events, which are quite fantastic, full of insight and very convenient. However, for me, nothing quite compares to physically seeing the best of our suppliers, side by side with their peers, where visitors can get hands-on with competing suppliers’ products, comparing the market in one location over the course of a few days. Our preview begins on page 43.
As we all know, gatherings and events have been off-limits until fairly recently, but now they are back, albeit with less swagger and scale than before for the time being. Speaking personally, and I feel on behalf of the majority, there is nothing quite like a really good trade show to provide a clear overview across a wide range of companies’ offerings and to be able to compare and contrast under one roof. There are those who will suggest that, especially in the case of MAFS, as some of the leading machinery brand names will not be there this year, visitor numbers will be fewer. To some degree, that may well be the case, but as a platform for everybody, the opportunity to engage with 1000s of visitors without the bigger brands in attendance can only be seen as favourable.
Elsewhere in the magazine you will struggle not to notice the impressive profile and celebration of one of the UK’s most respected woodworking machinery suppliers, JJ Smith, as they mark 100 years of delivering innovation and service for their customers. We also have features on Surfacing & Decorative Panels as well as Saws, Blades & Cutting Technology delivering up to the minute insight into these busy sectors, and of course Products and Updates to round things off.
I hope you enjoy the issue.
Demonstrating our continued commitment to our audience, Furniture & Joinery Production continues its policy of supporting and exhibiting at national events. So good luck to visitors and fellow exhibitors and I look forward to catching up in Telford and Birmingham.
I hope you enjoy the issue.

Softwood imports for 2023 finished higher than previous year, TDUK data shows
Despite the challenging end to 2023 seen across the construction sector, timber import volumes for the year were actually higher in three of the six product groups, with softwood imports in 2023 just outperforming the volumes seen in 2022 with growth of 0.8%.
Overall, the volume of the main imported timber and panel products ended 2023 a little lower than in 2022, down by 2.2% on the previous 12 months.
The main timber and panel
products sectors saw mixed fortunes throughout 2023. After a slow start, softwood imports gained impetus in the second half, to end the year 1% higher. Hardwood, plywood, particleboard and engineered wood products imports were all lower in 2023, but OSB import volumes were significantly higher (up 19.4%) and MDF volumes, too, were 2.2% higher than in 2022.
Volumes in the first half of 2023 trailed those seen during
2022, but modest improvements in the second half of the year made up for much of this lost volume. The scale of the cumulative deficit of all import volumes in 2023 compared to 2022 reduced each month starting from the middle of the year, until the final month when December brought weaker volumes across the board than were seen in December 2022. Import volumes in the final quarter of 2023 were 1% below the same quarter in 2022.

DFS Furniture has lowered its FY24 profit guidance to £20-£25m, after publishing its interim results for H1 FY24.
Despite a challenging and volatile climate, the group reports resilient underlying profit performance – PBT(A) £8.7m, up £1.6m on H1 FY23.

ACID marks 25 years with celebration in London
At a landmark event formally celebrating Anti Copying in Design’s (ACID) twenty-five years since it was founded, many from the world of IP and design were present to welcome the Minister for Intellectual Property and AI, Viscount Camrose, Creative Industries Co-Chair, Sir Peter Bazalgette, Iconic designer Sebastian Conran, Design Council CEO Minnie Moll and ACID’s Chief Counsel Nick Kounoupias, who each spoke about the importance of intellectual property (IP) and design.
Viscount Camrose gave a rousing speech applauding the design economy as well as congratulating ACID’s contribution.
“ACID has been a strong and consistent champion for SME designers for 25 years,” said The Minister, Viscount
Camrose. “Both in your own right and as a key member of the Alliance for IP, you have campaigned to ensure that IP rights are valued. The government has been pleased to work with ACID to help ensure our IP system continues to support creativity and innovation in design, and that our design system works effectively for smaller design-led businesses and lone designers.”
He further added, “I know that the introduction of criminal sanctions for unregistered designs is an important issue for ACID. We will be seeking evidence on this topic within our design consultation, so I would urge you all to respond.
I can assure you that the views of all respondents will be considered.”
Sir Peter Bazalgette, Co-Chair of the Creative Industries Council, said, “Intellectual property rights are the lifeblood of the creative industries. Without it, we don’t have creative industries. With it we have one of the most important
industrial sectors in the United Kingdom now, leading the world and delivering growth when most of the rest of the economy is sluggish.”
On AI, Bazalgette was forthright, citing that the elephant in the room is AI and machine learning, which looks like it’s going to drive a coach and horses through all the protection we’ve enjoyed the last 50 years for design and design rights. There are answers, and it shouldn’t all be in the courts of law. The answer is reforming IP, copyright and patent law. Digital watermarking and other such devices like blockchain are also available technologically
as solutions. But one thing’s for certain, he emphasised; we have to do something about it.
Laura Newbold Breen, ACID’s Chief Operating Officer, before introducing Design Council CEO Minnie Moll, congratulated her on her mega achievement, securing the UK as the destination for the 2025 World Design Organisation event.
Minnie Moll, Design Council CEO said, “The work that ACID does is so important, and it’s going to get even more important as we seek a level playing field for design that puts planetary needs front and centre, as well as navigating our way through AI”.

Xylexpo – just three months to go
With three months to go before the official opening of the 2024 edition, just under 250 exhibitors are registered so far to exhibit in Milan, in Halls 1 and 3 of Fiera Milano Rho, at Xylexpo, the biennial international exhibition of wood and furniture industry technology scheduled next May 21st to 24th.
Returning to its traditional calendar slot in May, the show will present plants, solutions, products and technology that will provide plenty of international visitors with an upgrade on all process stages, from primary operation to the most innovative finishing.
“Many key players of technology will be attending, leveraging the opportunity to be under the spotlight in a challenging landscape, with many visitors expected from Italy and abroad”
“Today, more than ever, exhibitions accurately reflect the market health, and Xylexpo definitely offers a clear picture of the current situation of our industry, in Italy and globally,” says Dario Corbetta, exhibition director.
“The record revenues of recent years have long been replaced by an inevitable reduction of orders. This situation was expected, but nevertheless, it caused many companies – despite high revenues supported by outstanding orders – to wait and see, to suspend investments in some activities, exhibitions on top of all.
“In recent weeks, many companies are reconsidering such decisions, but Xylexpo
2024 will inevitably have a different face.”
At FieraMilano-Rho, many key players of technology will be attending, leveraging the opportunity to be under the spotlight in a challenging landscape, with many visitors expected from Italy and abroad.
SCM, Felder, Naxing, KDT and several “famous” German and international brands have renovated their trust in an event that, don’t forget, is not just attractive for buyers, importers and international operators, but is located in one of the world’s most important markets for wood and furniture technology, with total demand exceeding one billion euro.

All set for unmissable opportunities at the BFM Furniture Component Expo
The British Furniture Manufacturers is gearing up for its inaugural Furniture Component Expo 24 next month. Taking place at Telford International Centre on 24th and 25th April, the expo has a packed programme of seminars over the two days.
Set to attract a broad spectrum of delegates, the event will provide an opportunity for furnituremakers to connect in a onestop-shop format. It will provide a setting for manufacturers of furniture to review, network and purchase products across
the whole supply chain from leading suppliers, all under one roof.
“We launched the event after feedback from members identified a gap in the market for furniture-makers to browse the marketplace and seek out new innovations coming into the sector, in a face-toface setting,” explains Phil Spademan.
“In our initial research in planning the expo, we were told that there is a real gap in the market for this type of business-to-business event and we are pleased to see it being
so well received across the industry.
“The show has been created for the industry, by the industry, with feedback from across the sector taken on board to deliver an event that really meets their needs.
“We are really pleased with how it has developed and been supported. There has been an exciting level of take-up from companies who are keen to be involved with the expo, not only sponsors, but exhibitors too.
“The expo also provides a backdrop to really get the message out over the two days
and beyond about backing British manufacturing.”
Vita Group was the first to announce its headline sponsorship of the event, followed by Carpenter Limited and BeA Group UK.
Andy Corbett, of The Vita Group, said: “Vita is thrilled to be the first headline sponsor of the BFM Furniture Component Expo. We look forward to welcoming visitors to our stand where we will be showcasing our latest innovations and sustainable offerings.”
Paul Shepherd of BeA Group UK, said: “Our products and

approach are continuing to win customer favour as we increase our presence and market share in the furniture production sector. We see the very first BFM’s Furniture Component Expo in the UK as the ideal opportunity to introduce automation and automation ideas as a way forward in future proofing production lines within the furniture industry.”
And Richard Harris, UK Commercial Director at Carpenter Ltd added: “We are delighted to be supporting the BFM with this new exhibition and see it as a great channel to showcase our product portfolio, aimed at comfort applications, supplied into both upholstery
and bedding markets.”
As well as providing an opportunity to exhibit, network and view a wide range of products and services, The Furniture Component Expo 24 will also feature several seminar sessions of relevance to the industry.
These include a talk from the Department for Business and Trade (DBT), who will set out export opportunities for the British furniture sector at the event, with a bespoke presentation given by Naomi Steemson, who is an International Trade Advisor at DBT in the Midlands.
Her talk will provide an overview of the complete service offer from DBT, which is designed to support enterprises of all sizes, including furniture businesses looking at export markets for the first time.
Naomi will also outline the role of International Trade Advisors, who are the DBT’s experts in connecting businesses with export opportunities and talk about initiatives such as the UK Export Academy, UK Export Finance and Trade Missions.
The seminar programme also features talks on best practice, sustainability, workforce and apprenticeships, alongside a workshop on carbon footprint and net zero.
The first day of the event will also feature two panel discussions. Automation vs Skills: Friend or Foe? is the topic for The Dorset Chairman Alan Payne; Racheal Baker from JJ Smith and Ian Peers from Ercol.
The second panel discussion will feature Dr Jake Lane from Silentnight Panel and is entitled Fire regulations: what next?
Silentnight has engaged with
the furniture sector on how to enable a reduction in CFR use, sharing their knowledge and findings on various subjects impacted by Fire Safety Regulations, and the segment will include a Q&A session. “This is a hugely important topic for our industry and the Furniture Component Expo 24,” says Phil Spademan. “The session will see experts from their fields offering their perspectives and insights into the research which has been conducted since the announcement of the Government Consultation on the regulations.
“BFM is seeking input into creating a round table discussion beyond the Furniture Component Expo 24 to present to Government as a further industry response, so this will provide an invaluable opportunity to collate
viewpoints across the sector.”
Other initiatives at the Furniture Component Expo 24 include an Innovation Trail, giving exhibitors at the event a new approach to reaching key audiences with their products and services.
Under the process, exhibitors can provide a pitch of their product or service to potential buyers at the show.
Delegates will be asked to vote for their favourite and the winner – as well as getting the opportunity to present to an influential audience –will also receive post-event publicity, organised by the BFM, including content across the trade association’s website and social media channels.
BFM members will also have free access to Club BFM, an exclusive lounge where refreshments will be available.

“These more sustainable flexible polyurethane PU foams, forged from recycled materials, aim to reshape the landscape of highperformance and ecoconscious furniture solutions”
Orbis™: A Sustainable Evolution
The Vita Group introduces Orbis™ – Europe’s “first flexible (PU) foam manufactured in part with recycled raw materials, sourced from postconsumer foam mattresses”. This breakthrough innovation doesn’t just represent a step
forward; it signals a shift towards circular economy practices. By transforming post-consumer foam into Orbis™, the Group effectively mitigates the need to send to landfill or incineration. This strategic move leads to reductions in carbon footprint, utilising waste as a valuable resource, while retaining the unmatched quality, durability, and comfort inherent to traditional flexible PU foam mattresses and also expanding the life cycle of the foam, causing less reliance on the virgin raw materials.
At the core of The Vita Group’s mission is a resolute commitment to fostering sustainability on a global scale. Its partnership with industry giants such as DOW, EVONIK, and COVESTRO amplifies its efforts to propel the industry towards a net-zero future. The Vita Group’s dedication is a substantiated reality:
• Science-backed emission reduction: The Vita Group is proud to claim that it was the first flexible polyurethane manufacturer
globally to have its emission reduction targets validated by independent climate scientists through the esteemed Science Based Target initiative (SBTi).
• Gilded sustainability: The Group’s tireless dedication finds validation in a Gold Sustainability Rating from EcoVadis, a globally trusted provider of business sustainability ratings. This accolade positions The Vita Group amongst the top 3% of evaluated entities worldwide.
• United for Change: The Vita Group proudly enlists as a signatory of the UN Global Compact and Race to Zero initiatives, solidifying its allegiance to shaping a sustainable future.

A house full of ideas
As a partner of the trade, Ostermann will of course be exhibiting at the upcoming Materials & Finishes Show in Birmingham. Positioned on Stand C20, Hall 6, Ostermann employees will be looking forward to presenting the company’s service, diversity and speed in person.
Due to the new exhibition concept, the Ostermann stand will be much larger this time than in previous years. It is a good thing, too, because as a partner to the trade, the company not only wants to present as many new products and services as possible to trade fair visitors, but also give them numerous ideas for future projects. In addition, the Ostermann range has been expanded with an assortment of fittings.
To maintain an overview despite the diversity, the Ostermann experts have come up with a very special concept this time: a tour through different living spaces, past many pieces of furniture that each reveal individual solutions. Also, a new, large edging wall with the latest innovations awaits its grand appearance.
Many new collections = many new edgings
The trade fair will be a good opportunity for Ostermann to present its perfectly matching edgings to the board suppliers’ current collections. First and foremost, the edgings for the new Egger Decorative Collection 24+. Then there are new edgings for the Polyrey, Formica, Abet Laminati and Resopal collections on display.
“The Ostermann experts have come up with a very special concept this time: a tour through different living spaces, past many pieces of furniture that each reveal individual solutions”
The main trend among the new collections are extremely matt surface finishes, of which there is an increasing number to be seen on both decor and plain boards. With its new Perfect Matt finish, Ostermann offers the equivalent for the edging.
New edging materials and ideas
Besides linoleum edgings, Ostermann’s new PP edgings will also be on show for the first time. Visitors can also find out more about the new customised decor edgings, which allow customers to design a decor themselves and receive their created edging in the required dimension.
Through the hallway and into the kitchen
The diversity in the Ostermann range offers a solution for almost every application in private and commercial furniture construction. When walking through different rooms, said diversity can
be discovered on selected furniture. You can even see a flight of stairs, including staircase lighting and cabinet solutions underneath the stairs. The kitchen will be a definite highlight. Here, visitors will see edgings to surfaces from the new collections, as well as numerous applications with the new Hettich fittings.
New: drawers & hinges From Hettich
Since the end of 2023, Ostermann UK has also been supplying Hettich’s innovative drawer systems and hinges, and can now better support its customers in the construction of their furniture. A new catalogue was sent out in January.
At the Materials & Finishes Show, trade fair visitors can view selected products on classic applications in the kitchen and, of course, receive advice from the trade fair team on request.

HOMAG’s CENTATEQ E-310 powerEdge CNC transforms production for Ireland’s Cash and Carry Kitchens
With a retail network of 17 showrooms throughout Ireland and a turnover in excess of €30 million, Cash & Carry Kitchens (part of the ORM ULC group) is proud to call itself the largest fitted kitchen manufacturer and retailer in the Emerald Isle. Established in 1977 in Cork, it has built a reputation as a maker of beautiful, affordable kitchens for families throughout Ireland.
“The company has been the best-selling kitchen retailer for many years,” explained Niall Cuthbert, managing director at ORM. “Listening to customers’ needs and wants has helped the business develop an unrivalled reputation for value, quality and service.
“Aligned with this, our business philosophy has always been to partner with the best suppliers out there; HOMAG is certainly one of those suppliers. It is considered the most advanced woodworking machinery company in the world, and for good reason. At ORM, we have been investing in HOMAG machinery and software for more than 30 years.
“The edge banders, CNCs, saws and other woodworking machinery are reliable, easy to operate and technically advanced. That’s why HOMAG was our first port of call when it came to sourcing a new CNC that would enable us to process curved worktops and workpieces and edge them using either EVA or PUR glue.”
The perfect pair – HOMAG’s CENTATEQ E-310 and powerEdge Pro Duo HOMAG’s CENTATEQ E-310 is a universal CNC processing centre designed to incorporate the edge banding of shaped parts. The compact machine offers a high level of performance, enhanced by a wide choice of configuration options for processing spindles, drilling gears and toolchangers.
With an array of machining features as standard, the CENTATEQ E-310’s basic packages include its powerful four- and five-axis routing spindles, travelling tool-changers for fast tool changes and a console table with high-precision liner guides and insertion aids.

The HOMAG powerEdge Pro Duo gluing technology - Users can switch between glue or zero-joint technology on CNCs
“The team at HOMAG are brilliant at working out the right solution for your manufacturing needs”
For ease of operation, the CENTATEQ E-310 features a large viewing window so all essential functions can be seen clearly by the machinist. In addition, the table is freely accessible with no fences restricting access for set-up or loading.
Operators also have full access to the front side of the machine so it is easy for them to carry out drill and edge changes, refilling adhesive reservoirs, and general servicing work. Thanks to new components and an intelligent control system, the
powerEdge Pro Duo unit makes it simple and quick to achieve efficient edge banding of curved parts.
Using exact edge tracing and a feed roller with direct travel measurement, the powerEdge system guarantees that edging tape is applied precisely from start to finish. The speed, temperature and contact pressure are defined at every point along the contour, with no restrictions on butt joint locations.
The pressure roller applies the edge to the workpiece with a precise amount of force for a consistently even finish. The addition of 360° gluing ensures even the smallest of components are edged to exacting standards. The easy and efficient programming of the powerEdge system allows the operator to achieve impressive results from the first workpiece without needing additional adjustments or test pieces.
The CENTATEQ E-310 – bringing everything in-house
Niall Cuthbert again, “The HOMAG E-310 CNC has enabled us to bring everything in-house. Previously, we had to send out curved worktops and workpieces for edging; that meant we lost control of both quality and delivery times.
“Even the curved carcass components we could manufacture in-house required the use of five or six different machines, so it was a slow and expensive process. Now we can do everything in-house on the one machine, so the CENTATEQ E-310 has definitely transformed our production capabilities.”
Efficient planning and comprehensive training
“As usual with HOMAG, the installation process of the machine was planned and implemented with German precision. The new CNC was delivered, installed and commissioned within two weeks. Everything went like clockwork, just as promised.
“Prior to delivery, my colleague and I went to Germany for a week’s training which was excellent. As part of the commissioning process. the installation engineers then trained our team onsite.
“The service from both HOMAG UK and Electro-Tech Machinery (HOMAG’s specialist machinery partner in Ireland) is excellent. Both companies are responsive, candid and helpful. They don’t fob you off with the usual sales patter, you get honest, informative advice that you can trust.
“The team at HOMAG are brilliant at working out the right solution for your manufacturing needs. Their ability to ask the right questions, questions that are much deeper and more probing than those asked by their competitors, helps them understand the issues and therefore put forward a better solution. I can’t recommend them highly enough,” concludes Cuthbert.

Maton Rose Interiors selects HOMAG SAWTEQ B-130 to boost efficiency
Wellingborough-based contract furnishing specialist, Maton Rose Interiors Limited, has a team of dedicated craftsmen who take great pride in all the work they produce. Established in 2011, the company employs 20 people in its modern production facilities.
“We offer an end-to-end service from concept to design, to planning, sourcing, manufacture, delivery and beyond,” claims Chris Ross, Workshop Manager at Maton Rose Interiors. He continues, “Last year we were experiencing an increasing amount of downtime with our old saw. To compound the problem, spare parts were becoming extremely difficult to source.
“The level of disruption to manufacturing was unacceptable, consequently the decision was made to invest in a new beam saw. For some time, we have admired the HOMAG brand of woodworking machinery and so we contacted them to discuss our requirement.
“From the outset, HOMAG’s professional approach and understanding were clear to see. They asked all the right questions before recommending the best model for our needs, the SAWTEQ B-130 beam saw.”
Seeing is believing
“HOMAG arranged for three of our team to visit a company who had been running a B-130 saw in its facility. Seeing the saw in action in a working environment and being able to talk directly with the operators of the saw, was really insightful.
“We were also very impressed with the build quality of the saw and the easy, intuitive operation of the machine. Equally important was the availability of the B-130; HOMAG had a machine in stock to the specification we wanted so we didn’t have a long waiting time before the saw could be delivered and installed.
“The HOMAG installation engineer, John, was very helpful and the training he gave our staff on site was excellent. The SAWTEQ B-130 is a great addition to our plant list, consistently delivering accurate cuts. It is easy to operate and the addition of the label printer means all our parts are labelled for ongoing production.”
State-of-the-art control system
The SAWTEQ B-130 utilises HOMAG’s CADmatic 5 high performance saw control system. With a wide range of functions, CADmatic 5 is an intuitive operating concept with clear administrative functions. What’s more, it is open for communication with other machines and software solutions, thus enabling manufacturing cells to be created.
Another feature available on the B-130 is HOMAG’s innovative operator assistance system, intelliGuide. The Classic version features an LED strip at the cutting line which guides the operator by means of light signals.
Using the coloured LED elements, machine operators can immediately see if a part has been fully processed, needs to be cut again or can be disposed of as waste. Based on which LEDs are lit up, the operator can also determine whether the workpiece being processed meets the required specifications.
The intelliGuide system provides completely intuitive machine operation that verifiably leads to significantly shorter throughput times, resulting in error-free increased output. The operator and saw work in tandem and no longer slow each other down.
Time saving and reduced wastage
Chris Ross concludes, “The SAWTEQ B-130 has boosted the efficiency of our manufacturing operation. It saves us time and has reduced wastage due to the skewed cutting facility.
“This is the first HOMAG machine we have invested in, and no doubt it won’t be the last. I would recommend the B-130 saw to any manufacturer looking for a robust, reliable beam saw with a small footprint.”

Daltons Wadkin meets increasing demand for planer moulders head-on
For Daltons Wadkin, the past 12 months have seen growth in both the number of planer moulders sold, as well as the turnover for this product. This is true for models aimed at joinery production as well as higher production mill specification machines. In addition, a number of college installations show that educational establishments are starting to invest more in this type of machinery, with the SCM Profiset models proving particularly popular.
The wider economic slowdown has had mixed effects on the woodworking machinery industry, with some segments seeing a dip in demand due to rising costs and others benefiting from the push towards automation and efficient production methods. Companies within the sector, including those producing moulders, are facing pressures from rising costs. The industry trends indicate a mix of absorbing costs where possible, coupled with necessary price adjustments to offset increased expenses.
Daltons Wadkin offers one of the most diverse ranges of planer moulders of any UK distributor. The focus on moulder
development spans across all brands in its portfolio, including Ledinek, Kuper and SCM. From high-productivity models to compact machines, driven by the demand for versatility, precision, and customisation.
Demand for the Daltons Wadkin’s Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) contracts has continued to grow. The company is seeing a general decline in the ability of wood processing companies to maintain and support their production equipment in-house. Daltons Wadkin has grown its Support Services department over the past 12 months with several new engineers joining the team, some specific to the support of planer moulders. Daltons Wadkin is now proud to boast some 15 mechanical, electrical and CNC engineers with more growth planned for 2024.
Service Director, Cliff Sharp, has a clear focus on customer support. “The relationship with our customers is truly a partnership,” he says. “The emphasis on

support and backup is clear for anyone to see. If we can’t support it, we don’t sell it. It’s as simple as that.”
Even more evident is the exponential increase in demand for certificated operator training. The Daltons Wadkin “Red Team” of dedicated trainers is now five strong. The team cover the UK and Ireland carrying out practical, hands-on training and assessment on a range of woodworking machinery, not least planer moulders. Again, as the availability of skilled workers dwindles this is an area that Daltons Wadkin see growing further over the next 12 months.

Your Solution To Flexible Window Manufacturing
THE COMPELLING ALTERNATIVE
WEINIG Conturex
THINK
weinig.co.uk
Double your capacity with Weinig
How do you double your manufacturing capacity without increasing your overheads? This isn’t a trick question. This is a reality for London-based external joinery company, Stanbrook & Nicholson. Its recent investment in a Conturex Artis+ CNC single-component production system from Weinig has seen the ambitious company introduce new revenue streams and have the capability to complete orders five times larger than ever before.
“In 2010, our company changed direction to become a specialist in external joinery,” says Ben Stanbrook, Director of Stanbrook & Nicholson. “It was at this point we bought our first window line. Since then, the goal has been to own a single component machine that could produce our complete product portfolio – reducing production times and increasing capacity without upping labour costs. In 2022, we found ourselves running at maximum capacity. We knew it was time to put our plans into action.”
“We were maxed out with a turnover of £2-2.5m each year. Thanks to the introduction of the Conturex, we now have the capabilities to reach upwards of £5m per year without any additional staff, bigger premises or more machinery”
In need of a machine that could produce any window component and automatically switch to another in direct sequence while offering zero change-over time on all parts (including profiles and ancillary operations), Ben and his business partner, Simon Nicholson, started investigating Weinig’s offering.
As it doesn’t rely on any jigs or fixtures, the Conturex can go from any one window component to another in direct sequence
“We’d heard about the Conturex, but we presumed it would be out of our financial reach,” says Ben. “Weinig are well known for installing multi-million-pound window and door lines into large-scale manufacturing facilities. We didn’t realise a machine like the Conturex would be attainable for a smaller manufacturer like us. When comparing the Conturex to other machines on the market, we knew we were looking at a completely different animal and incorporating this machine into our production would put us on a footing with the big guys.”
Before investing in the Conturex, Stanbrook & Nicolson would batch its machining. “We offer a wide range of products – from windows and doors to roof lanterns and by-fold doors – so our orders are often compiled of multiple parts. Batching items meant we’d be grouping different orders together and having to wait for other parts to be machined before we could complete an order. It made production planning more challenging, often leaving us paying overtime to get jobs done more quickly.
48 solid wood processing
“We’d use a cross-cut saw to start with and move the pieces onto our window line to complete the inner profiles. Then we’d glue up and use a CNC to do the outer profiles. We’d also need to hand-finish each piece before painting it. It was a slow process that left room for error and material damages.”
With a three or four-axis 30kW main shaft, profiling on the Conturex can be carried out in a single step, eliminating the need for a CNC and a dedicated operator. “Now, pieces go from the cross-cut saw directly onto the Conturex Artix+ before being painted. We no longer need two people running each machine. One person can now oversee the machining and also have time to support the team in the assembly area. Overtime is a thing of the past, too.”
Adaptive tooling has played a key part in the company’s production figures. Ben explains: “We worked closely with Oertli Tooling to create a tooling solution that would help us get the most out of the
Conturex, which included duplicating tooling to speed up production. This has made a huge impact on the time it takes to machine different profiles and the fast rpm on the Conturex offers a much cleaner cut, which means less finishing.”
This has been reflected in the company’s order book: “Not only can we confidently work on orders five times bigger than we could before, but we can also incorporate smaller, one-off items into our production schedules thanks to the machine’s quick and easy set-up. We no longer have to wait for a large batch to be completed before we can start work on it or halt production while we manually set up the machine for a specific order. In fact, it’s so easy to work variations into our production that we now offer an Express Service to customers.”
The benefits of virtually unlimited design options and quick, precise machining have
led to updates in the company’s portfolio. “We’ve changed from externally glazed to internally glazed designs and introduced new products, including the Heritage Slim Light – a traditional sliding sash window that features individual panes of glass. To do this the old way, it would have been painfully slow and unviable financially.”
“It’s clear to us that the Conturex can double our capacity and we’re expecting to see a return on investment almost immediately,” says Ben.
“We were maxed out with a turnover of £2-2.5m each year. Thanks to the introduction of the Conturex, we now have the capabilities to reach upwards of £5m per year without any additional staff, bigger premises or more machinery.
“Our next job is to feed the beast and win larger contracts. Having this kit in our industry sets us at a new level and we’re already feeling the buzz around it. It’s a really exciting time for us and we’re looking forward to the next chapter in our story.”

Unilap sees huge capacity and productivity benefits with Vollmer
South Yorkshire Saw & Tool Co, a small saw blade sharpening and ancillary supply company, first opened its doors for business almost 50 years ago. From its origins working out of a two-bay garage, the Doncaster manufacturer –now known as Unilap – has evolved into one of the UK’s leading saw blade and round tool manufacturing and servicing companies for the woodworking industry.
Following this impressive transformation, the business is still family-owned and operated by the sons of company founder, Darrell Hughes. Having invested heavily in sharpening technology from Vollmer UK since the late 1970s, the company is continuing its exceptional growth trajectory with investment in a further three Vollmer machines, thereby increasing capacity and compressing lead times of its 5,000+ product lines.
Unilap utilises its automated CNC technology to manufacture everything from circular saw blades, TCT- and PCD-tipped rotary tools and solid carbide tools. To manufacture the countless product lines with thousands of new, re-sharpened and serviced tools being delivered each week, the company has increased its Vollmer plant list to 11 Vollmer machines.
Adding to a portfolio that already includes QM, CHD, CHX, QXD and QWD models,
the Doncaster manufacturer purchased a Vollmer CHX840 with an HS loading system in April 2022. This was rapidly followed by a Vollmer QXD250 with the HC5 loader in July and then a Vgrind 260 with an HC4 loading system in October.
The reasoning behind the CHX840 and the QXD250 was simple. The automated CHX840 saw blade sharpening machine was purchased to add unmanned ‘lightsout’ running and alleviate capacity on the 22-employee company’s other saw blade manufacturing and servicing machines.
Likewise, Unilap already had a nine-yearold Vollmer QXD200 machine running around the clock, so upgrading to a brandnew QXD250 would add capacity. It would also support the rapid growth and give continuity of supply in the event of planned maintenance or machine downtime on the existing QXD200.
The Vgrind 260 was a completely new technology and a leap of faith for Unilap – a leap the company is delighted it has made.
“We have been buying Vollmer machines for over 40 years and we love the brand,” says Unilap Managing Director, Carl Hughes. “The build quality, innovation,
reliability and the ability to outperform all other machines is what keeps us buying Vollmer. The new machines are more userfriendly, productive, flexible and capable than ever before. The strides forward in technology from Vollmer compared to our older existing machines is phenomenal.”
With saw blade manufacturing continually growing and a series of robot-loaded Vollmer CHD machines running around the clock, Unilap wanted to automate the production of smaller-diameter saw blades to ease capacity issues and compress lead times. The solution was the Vollmer CHX840, with an HS automation system that can accommodate up to 25 saw blades.
Before the arrival of the CHX840, an employee would produce upward of 200 saw blades a week by manually loading a saw blade sharpening machine for 8 to 10 hours a day. With the arrival of the CHX840, up to 22 blades can be loaded to the automation system during the day and this will run unmanned whilst the operator can continue running a manually loaded machine. However, the major benefit is having the ability to re-load the CHX840 with another 22 saw blades at the end of the day shift to run overnight unmanned –
“With the new Vollmer investment, we can also deliver an astounding level of quality on everything from standard to special rotary tools and saw blades with impressive lead times”

effectively doubling capacity.
Also contributing to the success of the business is the new QXD250 machine with its HC5 automation system. The new QXD250 was installed to underpin the growth of the rotary PCD-tipped tool division and before the arrival of the QXD250, the existing Vollmer QXD200 machine was running 24 hours a day and six days a week. This gave the company no opportunity to grow its production of specialist rotary tools. Additionally, any time-consuming complex tools would create a bottleneck.
“Despite the complexity of the PCD tools we produce, our lead times would be two to three weeks for a new tool with existing re-tipping and servicing tools often having a lead time of around one week,” says Unilap’s General Manager, Bob Young. “With the new QXD250, we can reduce the lead times to less than one week – and in many instances two to three days.”
The QXD250 was supplied with the HC5 automation system that can accommodate 28 tools up to 320mm in diameter and 250mm long with a weight of up to 25kg. Offering 24/7 unmanned running, the new QXD250 at Unilap is frequently running non-stop for up to six days without an intervention.
Comparing the new generation QXD250 to the company’s existing nine-year-old QXD200, Bob says: “The leap forward in technology with the new QXD250 is incredible. The QXD250 incorporates Vollmer’s new VPulse EDM generator that is increasing our cutting speeds by up to 40%, whilst delivering vastly improved surface finishes up to 0.1μRa.
“From a software perspective, the machine has a Windows-based interface with the ExLevel PRO software that makes programming the machine much easier with its flexibility and intuitive interface. We can programme tools 50% faster than before. Added to this, the enhanced probing technology can now probe a tool in three minutes as opposed to 30 minutes on the previous machine.
“When you add all of these factors together, the new QXD250 is at least 50% more productive than its predecessor and the overall comparative time saving can be up to 70% to 80% when you add
in the programming, set-up and probing efficiencies.”
The final machine of the three to arrive at Unilap was the Vollmer Vgrind 260, with an HC4 loading system that can accommodate up to 158 round shank tools. With its unique multi-layer machining concept that has two vertically positioned grinding spindles on the C-axis pivot point, the move to a new machine concept was a daunting prospect for Unilap – but the company now wishes it made the move sooner.
Unilap produces an ever-increasing quantity of compression cutters for the woodworking and composite sectors. However, these ‘up cut down cut’ tools incorporate a more complex geometry than standard tools. That was until the arrival of the Vgrind 260.
“To prevent delamination on surfaces, the compression tools have two opposing geometries on a single tool, which can pose more of a challenge with the programming process,” explains Bob. “However, the
“The build quality, innovation, reliability and the ability to outperform all other machines is what keeps us buying Vollmer”
Numroto software suite on the Vgrind 260 makes the programming and production of compression tools and other complex geometry tools very simple. The intuitive guidance through the process enables us to programme and produce these tools with ease, and this is further streamlining our output and cutting our lead times with complex tools.
“The new investment in state-of-the-art technology from Vollmer is a statement of intent from Unilap,” concludes Bob. “As we expand our customer base in the woodworking sector, the QXD250 and CHX840 are giving us huge capacity and productivity benefits that will be the foundation block for future growth. With the new Vollmer investment, we can also deliver an astounding level of quality on everything from standard to special rotary tools and saw blades with impressive lead times.”

A strong accent in the interior –Brushed Metal HPL now available from Decorative Panels Lamination
Metallic design accents in interior and furniture design have grown in popularity in recent years, bringing an elegant feel to a space, and adding a unique touch. Meeting this demand, Decorative Panels now offers a range of six brushed metal HPL designs from Kronospan – a leading manufacturer of wood-based panels.
These modern, sophisticated finishes include Brushed Aluminium, Brushed Titan, Brushed Inox, Brushed Gold, Brushed Copper and Brushed Bronze. The metal decors are made from high-quality MDF substrate, coated with real aluminium sheets, and covered with protection foil. They are suitable for vertical applications such as doors, as well as horizontal surfaces like home and retail countertops, offering a stylish and tactile experience in residential, business, or commercial spaces.
Brushed Copper, Brushed Gold and Brushed Bronze accents add warmth and nobility to interiors and combine fantastically with most decorative surface materials. Metal HPL Brushed Inox, Brushed Aluminium and Brushed Titan, on the other hand, take us into a more industrial atmosphere.
“Beyond its strength, durability and quality, the use of Metal HPL has also become popular because of the variety of design possibilities it offers”
56
Brushed Titan & Brushed Copper
In an arrangement where straight lines and neutral colours dominate, decorative metal surface additions are an interesting contrast and eye-catcher. They can be used, for example, in the form of a furniture front, which will provide unique focal points in the space.
If metal accents in furniture are not enough, you can also opt for larger metal HPL surfaces, such as walls. Decorative Metal HPL surfaces are particularly eyecatching, with the advantage that the metallic brilliance and elegance will always be visible and eye-catching, never fading into the background.
Possibly one of the most evident characteristics of metal HPL surface is that it is a much more resistant material. Compared to other materials, metal is not affected by excessive exposure to light and
withstands from the lowest to the highest temperatures.
Resistance also gives them durability. Metal HPL material can last for many years with minimal care, and can be cleaned very easily. Metal HPL is extremely resistant both to weight and to possible damage caused by use, such as scratches and peeling of edges.
Beyond its strength, durability and quality, the use of Metal HPL has also become popular because of the variety of design possibilities it offers. Metal HPLs have simple but unique brushed lines, and the metallic effect integrates harmoniously into any decorative style.
The designs are available in 3050mm x 1310mm board sizes and MDF substrates of 15mm & 18mm.

A treasure trove of design possibilities
In the fast-paced world of decor design, staying ahead of trends is crucial for businesses aiming to stay competitive. Kronospan, gearing up to launch its latest decor range, invited Lawcris Panel Products to its Design Studio in Malta. Here, they showcased their agility in responding to emerging trends and transforming raw materials into captivating designs.
“As you step into “the bunker”, you’re immediately struck by the sheer abundance of raw materials surrounding you,” explains Lauren Barker, marketing manager.
“It’s like stepping into a treasure trove of design possibilities, but instead of gold and jewels, you’re greeted by an eclectic array of wood species, marbles, stones, and commercial artwork, serving as a playground for innovation and inspiration.
“From salvaged ex-floorboards originating from Ralph Lauren’s house to the unexpected discovery of striking pink walnut, each has its own story. One of my favourites was the weathered oak retrieved from Venice’s harbour. Brimming with imperfections and holes carved by sea creatures, this served as the inspiration for Gold Harbour Oak decor in Kronospan’s
collection today.
“But there was an additional surprise awaiting us! We were graciously invited to partake in a hands-on design experience. Guided by experts, we transformed a raw walnut plank into a finished masterpiece. This involved crafting veneers, meticulously arranging the pattern, enhancing the woodgrain with specialised products, adjusting tones, and delicately sanding to unveil the natural hues of the material. Finally, we scanned the whole piece under a spectacular scanner which transformed the physical piece into a digital design. Imperfections were corrected using software and the next morning we were sent the renders of our decor, named “Barker’s Wal-nuts”, in a bathroom setting. Absolutely mindboggling! Incredible!”
Dean Carroll, Product Development Manager, says “Seeing the process itself makes you really appreciate the thought behind Kronospan designs. By having such a rich inventory at their disposal, Kronospan’s design team can readily experiment and prototype, enabling them to adapt to evolving design trends promptly.”
Lauren Barker adds “The company’s design studio serves as a melting pot of ideas, where concepts are refined and translated into tangible products that cater to specific market demands. We were so lucky to see it!”

Fibrapan Hidrofugo has become one of Finsa’s flagship products, as makers and joiners across the country have been enjoying a superior board that streamlines processing due to its unique properties.
Fibrapan Hidrofugo Plus uses the same unique Steam Injection Process (SIPs) as Fibrapan Hidrofugo, which
gives it the recognisable face finish and unrivalled core qualities “impossible to achieve” through standard MDF press technology.
During this process, specially selected wood fibres are bonded with moisture-resistant adhesives to produce a board with a smooth, flat and consistent surface, and a dense core with a strong internal bond that enables a high standard of machining. The properties of the board mean that they require less preparation time and less paint, ultimately creating a superior finish.
Fibrapan Hidrofugo Plus maintains the enhanced machinability that we see with the popular Fibrapan Hidrofugo, with an even sharper edge, finer detail and a minimal need for sanding. Fibrapan Hidrofugo
Plus reduces processing time even further than Fibrapan Hidrofugo, reducing the amount of paint needed but also ensuring a more refined finish, saving both time and money. www.finsa.com

Introducing the iDovetail
Proudly posited as “the easiest dovetail machine in the world”, the iDovetail is a new machine that is designed to reduce staff training time and the correction time when changing a workpiece. The remarkable thing about it is that anyone can operate this machine, with similar ease as using a mobile phone or printer.
Here we explore some of the machine’s key features ...
Overview
The settings for making a dovetail profile are usually very tricky. You have different shapes, but also different wood thicknesses and widths. All these variants make it very difficult to set up a normal dovetailing machine. This is often done by a professional who has been used to adjusting the machine for years, but even then, it is very difficult when you need a change of model, or other wood type and thickness.
A furniture maker knows that this is very difficult and spends a lot of time calculating. They have to make readjustments every time, for example, the width of the wood or the model of the dovetail changes.
66
With the iDovetail that is all a thing of the past. You can easily enter your wood dimensions and the desired dovetail on the screen, and you can see in real-time what is happening and what it looks like in your wood choice.
This makes it extremely easy for the operator to set up the machine. In fact, the machine itself does it all automatically; you don’t have to make complicated settings or have long-term knowledge.
An easy-to-use interface
iDovetail designs the processing dimensions of each type of joint into a realtime model so that you can directly see your finished product in the process of your input. The model changes when you enter any size.
This technology gives you a very clean operating space, so you can complete all the design on the same screen. Using a real-time model like this means you can master your finished product 100% in the design stage.
Multiple functions
The iDovetail supports six commonly used joint types, each of which can be freely modified. With a 45° flip structure, you can easily cut mitre joints.
Touch
The unobstructed 3D interface is operated using the gestures you are familiar with from your smartphone: Tap/Double Tap/ Swipe/Pinch/Zoom.
Minimalist design
In addition to the emergency stop button, the entire machine has only three
physical buttons. iDovetail has complete operational tips during your operation, and the design is so intuitive that it can be learned very quickly.
Further information
Based in the Netherlands, Rehomy is the European importer of this unique machine from Taiwan.
The first iDovetail is already in operation in the UK and potential customers are very welcome to see this machine working live.

Strategic investments drive Simpson & Liddard’s success in bespoke interior fit-outs
The landscape of bespoke interior fitouts is continually evolving, and among established names, Simpson & Liddard emerges as a notable contender. Founded in 2021 by Aaron Simpson and Danny Liddard, this Essex-based company has quickly established itself, blending luxury and meticulous craftsmanship into notable projects across the UK.
Their portfolio is impressive, featuring work in esteemed locations such as The University of Westminster and St Mary’s Church. From the flawless joinery at St Charles Hospital to the creative designs at Kings Cross Lightroom Theatre, Simpson & Liddard’s attention to detail shines through in every project. Each showcases the exceptional talent of their dedicated 10-person team.
“Microvellum’s comprehensive functionality, encompassing 2D and 3D drawings, production reports, estimating tools, labelling capabilities, and CNC machine code generation, provided a one-stop shop for the entire design and manufacturing workflow”
Last year, 2023, marked a pivotal moment for Simpson & Liddard. Discerning clientele demanded not just luxury, but flawless execution, precision, and unmatched efficiency. Recognising this, the company invested strategically in a state-of-theart Felder Format-4 Profit H08 CNC router. This powerful machine offered the precision and flexibility needed to tackle even the most intricate joinery pieces. However, Simpson & Liddard understood that machinery alone couldn’t ensure
success. To truly streamline the designto-manufacturing process, they needed an advanced CAD/CAM software solution.
Following an in-depth search, the team decided on Microvellum. The software’s seamless AutoCAD integration and advanced solid modelling tools were a game-changer. The software offered their drafting team the versatility to design everything from simple cabinetry to the most complex bespoke joinery with remarkable ease.
68 products SOFTWARE
Microvellum’s comprehensive functionality, encompassing 2D and 3D drawings, production reports, estimating tools, labelling capabilities, and CNC machine code generation, provided a one-stop shop for the entire design and manufacturing workflow.
Reflecting on the team’s experience, Danny Liddard said, “Microvellum has been instrumental in completing several intricate bespoke projects in recent months. It allows us to tackle complicated joinery with efficiency and offers the flexibility to quickly customise cabinetry designs. This software has undoubtedly maximised our capacity.”
The impact of these strategic investments has been undeniable. Within just eight months of implementing their new software and CNC machine, Simpson & Liddard has witnessed significant growth. Their order book for 2024 is already robust, and the future
holds immense promise. The company plans to expand its team by adding two more drafters and to acquire another CNC machine with flexibility for staircase production, further enhancing their ability to handle the growing workload.
Simpson & Liddard’s dedication to quality and excellence recently received prestigious validation. They were awarded the coveted Manufacturing Guild Mark by The Furniture Makers’ Company. This recognition solidifies their position amongst Britain’s elite joinery manufacturers, highlighting their unwavering commitment to exceptional design, innovative product development,
and craftsmanship that surpasses expectations.
With a clear vision for the future and a relentless focus on innovation, Simpson & Liddard is poised to continue its impressive trajectory. Their unwavering dedication to crafting exceptional bespoke interiors for discerning clientele positions them as a force to be reckoned with in the ever-evolving world of bespoke joinery. Their story is a testament to the power of vision, strategic investment, and a passionate team, all working together to transform spaces into expressions of unparalleled elegance and functionality. www.microvellum.com

Why MDF is ideal for furniture and wall panelling
When it comes to making furniture, medium-density fibreboard (MDF) provides a host of benefits. As well as excellent machinability, smooth finish, strength and consistency, MDF can be manufactured in various thicknesses, allowing for greater versatility when it comes to design.
It’s not just ideal for furniture. MDF is also now a popular choice for wall panelling, usually seen in living rooms, hallways and bedrooms. Again, this is down to its smooth and even surface, which makes it easier to apply paint or lacquer onto it.
MEDITE SMARTPLY has an extensive range of MDF products that offer standard, speciality and technical variants to meet a multitude of specifications.
MEDITE PREMIER is an excellent choice for furniture applications and panelling. This multi-purpose MDF is produced using superior wood-refining technology and specially designed resins. Its smooth surface and excellent machining properties make it suitable for the thinnest laminates and surface coatings – offering greater design freedom.
MEDITE PREMIER is available in a range of sizes and thicknesses including 3-6mm, which is commonly used in basic furniture applications such as backings for wardrobes, chest of drawers, and shelving.
Those working on kitchen or bathroom projects will find MEDITE OPTIMA the ideal choice. This higher-density,
moisture-resistant MDF panel is suitable for applications where users need added density, enhanced machinability and higher surface quality compared to other standard moisture-resistant panels. For end users looking to save time on their projects, there is MEDITE MR PLUS –a premium white primed moisture resistant MDF panel. The panel is primed on both surfaces using an opaque UV-cured coating system with a matt low gloss finish. It has all the benefits of MEDITE MR but is designed to eliminate the need to prime the panel before painting. It’s ideal
for exhibition stands, shop fit-outs, kitchen and bathroom furniture, general furniture and general interior joinery.
All MEDITE products are fully certified, UKCA and CE marked, and legally sourced. Additionally, the panels are CARB 2 compliant, which contributes to a healthier indoor environment.

OVVO’s growing range of invisible connectors sees addition of glue-less 6mm dowel
OVVO continues to expand its range of wood joining connectors, leading the way in furniture ‘tools-free’ assembly components, making life easier for consumers and end-users, and delivering a more profitable and efficient solution for manufacturers.
OVVO products are a range of cleverly engineered, award-winning, invisible connectors that make joining wood simple. The connectors are installed during the manufacturing process so the end-user can simply click/push together cabinets, shop fit-out components, door frame assemblies or furniture without the need for tools, screws, or glues.
The result is an accessible, sustainable product that saves time, money and effort for consumers and manufacturers alike. Manufacturers can also benefit from significantly reduced shipping costs, as items can be shipped flat-packed.
The latest addition to the OVVO product family of dowels is the 6mm x 40mm version, namely the OD640 which is specifically designed to work in standard 6mm drill patterns. The OD640 is inserted into the panel without any glue to form a permanent joint in as thin as 12mm panels. These new connectors make it even easier for manufacturers to incorporate OVVO into their standard processes, saving time and money by eliminating glue and case clamping time. No additional equipment or capital is needed to deliver tools-free

assembly products to the end customer.
This new self-clamping, glue-less, invisible OVVO Dowel (OD640) is designed for connecting cabinet parts and all types of furniture using standard drilled holes on both sides of the joint, thereby simplifying the panel processing operations while continuing to provide all of the benefits of OVVOs’ proven tools-free ‘Push-ClickConnect’ assembly methodology.
All OVVO connectors are designed for
high-volume, automatic insertion, and ongoing partnerships with leading machine vendors such as Pro-Edge Technology and software providers Cabinet Vision, TopSolid, iFurn, Swood and Cabinet Sense ensure that manufacturers can easily incorporate OVVO into their existing processes, and also into new product design and development. The PET CNC OVVO is the only machine in the industry with insertion capabilities for all OVVO connectors.
All OVVO connectors can be installed into a variety of materials ranging from highquality hardwoods to low-grade particle board, and the company’s recyclable plastic means any waste is put back into the production of its product.
OVVO works best in boards >12mm thickness and is available in a range of sizes to perfectly match your requirements. All connector sizes are available in both permanent and releasable options, extending the range of materials and opportunities to inspire creative design and innovative development.

Häfele to distribute redeveloped slide and pivot solution from Hawa
Häfele UK has announced it will be distributing the latest slide and pivot solution from Hawa – the Concepta III.
Balancing functionality and aesthetic, the Hawa Concepta III features recently redeveloped technology which makes it possible to install and adjust slide and pivot doors quicker and easier than ever before.
Created by a select group of architects, planners and manufacturers involved in the design and installation process, Hawa Concepta III overcomes a wealth of typical challenges associated with slide and pivot doors. For example, thanks to a high degree of pre-assembly, and an in-built intuitive and accessible adjustment system, it is almost as easy to fit as it is to operate. Plus, with the technology hidden
inside the panels, it makes for a sleek and modern finish.
Available in half-height and floor-to-ceiling designs, as well as for wall units with two, three or four doors, the Hawa Concepta III offers almost unlimited creativity in functionality when the doors are in use, with an elegant, flush-fitting front once closed. Plus, with ergonomic movement support, it’s possible to move the doors both out of the pocket and to close the whole system with just a light tap for each movement, meaning the doors can be made handleless.
Tested for 40,000 cycles and maintenancefree for the entire service life of the product – equivalent to 25 years – Hawa Concepta III is highly durable and reliable and meets DIN EN 15706 as standard.
“Simple to its core, with quick installation, prompt adjustment and a multitude of configuration and design options, the Hawa Concepta III looks set to be a gamechanging addition to the joinery landscape”
“Space is a precious resource in our homes, and increasingly designers and installers are being tasked to find solutions that ensure the footprint customers have at their disposal works as hard as it possibly can,” says Elizabeth Briggs, Category Manager for Sliding, Room and Building at Häfele UK.
“Slide and pivot doors are helping drive forward the endless possibilities when it comes to flexible home design, and the new Hawa Concepta III offers a particularly groundbreaking solution.

Everything you need for modern staircase design
Ostermann supplies carpenters/cabinet makers with a harmonised system of items for modern staircase construction: from handrails and handrail brackets to staircase spindles and lighting solutions and non-slip profiles.
The design of the staircase is basically a house’s calling card. At the same time, security plays a critical role in this living area. Carpenters/cabinet makers with staircase construction projects will therefore find a broad portfolio of products at Ostermann that promote safety in the staircase area. The advantage is that all materials can be conveniently ordered together in the Ostermann online shop and are then delivered just in time.
A tip for a modern look are the black handrail brackets and staircase spindles in combination with solid oak handrails.
The warm oak wood of the handrails is accentuated by the matt black metal elements. And because wooden staircases are the perfect stage for indirect lighting, the Ostermann experts recommend the customised ChannelLine C lighting profiles with matching Versa Stair LED strips. Find all information about the staircase & balustrade systems at Ostermann under the search term “#balustrades” at www. ostermann.eu
Handrails, brackets and staircase spindles
The finger-jointed handrails made of solid oak are available in round and square versions, each in different dimensions. In addition to accessories such as centring sleeves or bends, Ostermann also supplies matching brackets for wall mounting.
The RAL 9005 jet black colour variants are particularly stylish. If you want to combine the handrail with spindles, the Ostermann experts recommend stainless steel models, which are also available in jet black.
Staircase lighting
Wooden stairs provide a perfect stage for indirect lighting, as you can really bring out the shape and geometry of the staircase by accentuating it with light. Safety is also improved. To make it even easier for furniture makers to realise their lighting ideas, Ostermann has added many new products to its range, especially for staircase lighting.
Safety first: non-slip profiles
Non-slip plastic profiles are simply inserted into a prefabricated groove and provide grip on smooth staircases. They are supplied in widths of 10 and 11mm, and in many colours from 1 metre as rolls.
All for the staircase – all from one source
Adhesives, cleaners, hand tools and packaging materials ... these workshop supplies are also part of the range and can be ordered in the Ostermann online shop. Still, the Ostermann team will be at customers’ disposal for telephone orders or any questions regarding the products. www.ostermann.eu/en

Maximise efficiency and productivity with a dust extraction system
Maintaining high levels of efficiency and productivity is paramount to success in the realm of woodworking process. One significant challenge that joineries face is the accumulation of dust and debris, which we all know can lead to equipment downtime, increased maintenance requirements, and compromised workflow. By having a dust extraction system installed, woodworking operations can experience substantial productivity improvements, reduced downtime, minimised equipment maintenance, and enhanced overall workflow.
Reducing downtime
Accumulated dust poses a significant risk to equipment and machinery, leading to unplanned downtime for cleaning, maintenance, and repairs. A dust extraction system plays a pivotal role in reducing this downtime. By effectively capturing dust and debris before infiltrating machinery, woodworking operations can experience fewer breakdowns and operational interruptions. This translates to a higher utilisation rate of machinery, leading to increased production and, ultimately, greater efficiency.
“Nordfab’s ductwork for dust extraction systems have proven to be a transformative solution for woodworking operations seeking to maximise efficiency and productivity”
targeted approach minimises the time workers spend cleaning up and reduces interruptions to production, ultimately maximising efficiency.
By reducing the ingress of dust and debris to machinery, the need for frequent maintenance is also diminished. This results in cost savings associated with reduced maintenance expenses and allows woodworking facilities to allocate resources more efficiently.
Streamlined dust removal process
Nordfab, a global manufacturer of ductwork for dust extraction systems, offers a range of innovative solutions tailored to meet the unique needs of furniture joineries. Nordfab’s Quick-Fit ducting system is designed with a modular ductwork concept that enables quick and hasslefree installation. This modular approach facilitates the creation of customised extraction solutions tailored to the specific needs of a woodworking joinery.
Dust and debris are efficiently captured at the source by optimising the ductwork routing, preventing their dispersion throughout the workspace. This
Enhanced workflow
Nordfab’s ductwork for dust extraction systems is critical in promoting a safer and healthier work environment for woodworking professionals. By mitigating the risks associated with airborne dust particles, workers’ overall health and wellbeing have been shown to be improved. A cleaner and more organised workspace enhances overall workflow efficiency.

Let the crane take the strain (one year on)
In early 2023, Furniture and Joinery Production featured a Ranheat installation that required a 200-tonne crane to install. Continuing his series of exclusive articles, Chris Franklin – MD at Ranheat Engineering – looks at the first year of the plant’s operation ...
The location of a wood-fired industrial heating system is often dictated by the location of the dust extraction system. Generally, if installing an integrated dust extraction and industrial wood-fired heating system, you don’t want it at the front of your premises.
Often, dust extraction systems are installed at the rear and sometimes access to this area is non-vehicular, particularly with a bag-based dust extraction system. Individual bags can be carried through standard doors and put into a skip.
As companies expand and with the introduction of high-speed CNC machines, the changing of bags becomes a regular and messy operation. So, the solution to getting rid of the bags is to install the existing filter onto a new storage silo.
Ranheat modify the base of the filter and supply a new storage silo that the existing filter can sit on, connected by a purposemade flanged upstand. The silo is fitted with accredited burst panels on the dirty side of the filter. By using this method, no expensive-to-run transfer fan is needed.
Obviously, with no vehicular access to the rear of the site, a large crane was needed.
Specialist lifting contractors were used to provide a 200-tonne crane able to lift the new silo and other components to the rear of the factory and to lift the existing modified filter onto the silo.
The automatically fed system was to replace an existing hand-loaded system and Ranheat modified the existing eightbag filter system. Ross Larner, Operations Director of Paneltech, indicates below the difference the new system has made to the company and the staff.
“Firstly, the staff hated changing the bags on the old system and to change the bags meant that the extraction had to be turned off, so no machines needing extraction could be used at this time,” he says. “It was a dirty task and PPE was needed. Also, the bags had to be carried through the building to be put in a skip at the front of the building.
“The hand-loaded heater it replaced meant we came into a cold factory each morning. To get the unit to operate smokeless meant the heater had to be loaded every 10-15 minutes so it was labour-intensive.
“As part of the project, we also installed a woodchipper to deal with the off-cuts. Now,
all our waste is automatically transferred to the storage silo both as chips and extracted dust. Not having to load the heater and change the dust extraction bags has eliminated two labour-intensive jobs that were also unpopular with the workforce.”
The chosen wood-chipper was an 800mm wide cutter with 22kW drive motor, complete with an 18mm screen, 40 cutters and a capacity of up to 800kgs/hr. The extraction is fitted with a humpback magnet to collect any soft metal fixings that may be present.

Superfici Valtorta bravorobot – the machine that takes care of the details
Surface treatment plays an increasingly crucial role in raising the aesthetic and practical quality of a piece of furniture, a fixture, or a wooden floor. This is why SCM believes strongly in the importance of expanding its extensive range of products and services for machining wood with exclusive solutions and skills.
Valtorta Bravorobot
This Cartesian spraying robot is part of the Superfici DNA because it was able to evolve over time, thanks to constant innovation and technological improvement. The main idea behind the Bravorobot is to replicate the movements of an artisan craftsman and to join two of the most important features for the perfect finishing: consistency and delicacy.
Consistency, expected from a machine even after prolonged activity, not only means reliability on the final product but also less waste. Delicacy, expected from a craftsman, is ensured thanks to the five-axis system, which allows the spraying system to freely move, reaching all parts of even the most complex geometries.
The machine can recognise characteristics and geometries thanks to the 3D scanner at the entrance of the infeed. The data, related to size, position, and shape of each panel of the workpiece, is sent to the electronic control of the machine. The advanced superfici software translates this information into movements for the arm and, in combination with the generated data, gives the perfect spraying path to the arm. The function is very intuitive and user-friendly to set. It involves optimising the movement of the arm in terms of production even for the most complex forms.
What plays a fundamental role in the quality and gives the machine a boost is the ability to tilt and position the robotic arm so that the guns can be adapted for edges and nonplanar part geometries.
The cabin ensures the perfect quality of air inside the machine. This is important not only for the correct management of any overspray but also to reduce the dirt and dust particles that could enter and ruin the status of the painting.
The filtering system consists of two
“The main idea behind the Bravorobot is to replicate the movements of an artisan craftsman and to join two of the most important features for the perfect finishing: consistency and delicacy”
filtering elements – a cardboard filter that retains the majority of the paint particles and a filter made of synthetic material which collects the finest particles. It is also possible to add a water filtration system. Water layers are generated and maintained on the sides of the conveyor: the air passing through these layers deposits the solid particles of paint contained therein. The water curtains are obtained using the continuous recirculation of water contained in two connected side tanks.
Furthermore, the machine has a fullsize filtering roof in the spraying cabin to achieve perfect control of the overspray and reduce turbulences.
Applications
The framing attribute of Bravorobot is its flexibility. The applications are countless and there is no real limit to the shapes and the geometry complexity of the parts that it can paint. It paints not only the grooves but also j shapes and curved panels, and it does so without reducing the application quality.
The Bravorobot is not only suitable for painting all kinds of materials but also for glue application: tuning the guns and the feeding system makes it possible to adapt it to the glue’s specific characteristics.

NORDFAB QUICK-FIT DUCTING a perfect solution for any growing joinery
For 50 years, Nordfab ducting has been used around the world in dust collection application in wood shops. From oneperson shops in home garages, to large manufacturing plants.
Let’s take a closer look on why Nordfab ducting is one of the preferred solutions within the woodworking industry.
Wine rack manufacturer invests in two wood waste heaters
Sorrells Wineracks Ltd, based in Rayleigh, Essex has purchased two wood waste heaters from Wood Waste Technology to help reduce the company’s gas and skip bills.
Sorrells is an established firm, with a history dating back as far as 1947. The company specialises in crafting exquisite wine cellars, and has expanded into creating beautifully bespoke joinery and metalwork projects for interior spaces.
With energy prices increasing, the company started to look into ways of reducing operational costs. An internet search introduced them to the concept of wood waste heaters. Continued research led to the discovery of the high-quality range of heaters produced here in the UK by Wood Waste Technology, and contact was made to find out more.
After a site survey and a quote, the company purchased two WT10 wood waste heaters that were installed by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers.
“We’re delighted with our wood waste heater and just wish we’d purchased one sooner!” says Leanne Lewis, Director at Sorrells. “As well as helping us be more environmentally friendly by recycling our waste wood, it’s saving us a fortune on heating and waste disposal costs. Our bills for services like gas to heat the workshop and skips to dispose of our waste wood could cost the business around £3500 a quarter before we purchased the wood waste heater, and these costs have now reduced considerably.
“The wood waste heater does
a fantastic job of keeping the workshop warm – the team are delighted with it! It’s very easy to use and maintain, and everyone at Wood Waste Technology has been so helpful and professional to deal with. We’d have no hesitation in recommending them to other businesses looking to make operational savings.”
Kurt Cockroft, Managing Director at Wood Waste Technology says: “Businesses with a significant amount of wood waste can get payback on their investment in a wood waste heater in as little as 12 months because of the savings that can made by reducing heating and skip hire bills.”
Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand-fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers.
