To my eyes at least, it would appear that spring has most definitely sprung and the industry is quickly becoming much more energetic and industrious than has been the case over the last six months or so. February saw the impressive Surface Design Show followed by the excellent Panelco Innovation Event, and into March with kbb Birmingham and most recently I spent time at AES UK’s at home event catching up not only with the AES and J&C O’Meara teams, but also with a group of suppliers from software, panels, tooling, fittings and components.

Despite everything, spring always ushers in a striking effervescence as we look forward to busier schedules, plan for more events and shift into another gear. As we tumble through April and into May, the return of Interzum and Ligna is most welcome. The twin German events –which together create an international beacon for innovation and development in our industry – are returning from their pandemic-enforced slumber to deliver a much needed shot-in-thearm for those who relish getting to grips with our industry on a face to face basis.

Moving forward into April and May we have the opportunity to discover new ideas at three of the most important events of the year, two of them in the UK in Telford and Birmingham, and one in Milan. First up is the new Furniture Component Expo (FC Expo) at Telford International Centre organised by the British Furniture Manufacturers association, this is followed by the Materials & Finishes Show (MAFS) taking place in May and organised by Montgomery Group.

The best trade show fortnight in the calendar begins with the Cologne event for fittings, components and materials runs from May 9-12th (Tues-Fri). Then we travel north east for Ligna in Hanover which takes place from May 15-19th (Mon-Thurs). Typically, Ligna delivers a sea of innovation and upgrades from manufacturers and suppliers of machinery, equipment, tooling, dust extraction and the software side of things.

The rise of smaller open house type events organised by key players in our industry has been keenly reported in the magazine and elsewhere. They continue to be valuable and efficient platforms, creating a more dedicated, affordable and closely managed event, allowing both suppliers and potential customers a calm and controlled environment to have more detailed, one-to-one experiences. In this regard, these events are ideal and will, I am sure, continue to be a welcome part of the events mix.

Both events now sport digital versions of their events, which are quite fantastic, full of insight and very convenient. However, for me, nothing quite compares to physically seeing the best of our suppliers, side by side with their peers, where visitors can get hands-on with competing suppliers’ products, comparing the market in one location over the course of a few days. Our preview begins on page 43.

As we all know, gatherings and events have been off-limits until fairly recently, but now they are back, albeit with less swagger and scale than before for the time being. Speaking personally, and I feel on behalf of the majority, there is nothing quite like a really good trade show to provide a clear overview across a wide range of companies’ offerings and to be able to compare and contrast under one roof. There are those who will suggest that, especially in the case of MAFS, as some of the leading machinery brand names will not be there this year, visitor numbers will be fewer. To some degree, that may well be the case, but as a platform for everybody, the opportunity to engage with 1000s of visitors without the bigger brands in attendance can only be seen as favourable.

Elsewhere in the magazine you will struggle not to notice the impressive profile and celebration of one of the UK’s most respected woodworking machinery suppliers, JJ Smith, as they mark 100 years of delivering innovation and service for their customers. We also have features on Surfacing & Decorative Panels as well as Saws, Blades & Cutting Technology delivering up to the minute insight into these busy sectors, and of course Products and Updates to round things off.

Softwood imports for 2023 finished higher than previous year, TDUK data shows

Despite the challenging end to 2023 seen across the construction sector, timber import volumes for the year were actually higher in three of the six product groups, with softwood imports in 2023 just outperforming the volumes seen in 2022 with growth of 0.8%.

Overall, the volume of the main imported timber and panel products ended 2023 a little lower than in 2022, down by 2.2% on the previous 12 months.

products sectors saw mixed fortunes throughout 2023. After a slow start, softwood imports gained impetus in the second half, to end the year 1% higher. Hardwood, plywood, particleboard and engineered wood products imports were all lower in 2023, but OSB import volumes were significantly higher (up 19.4%) and MDF volumes, too, were 2.2% higher than in 2022.

Volumes in the first half of 2023 trailed those seen during

2022, but modest improvements in the second half of the year made up for much of this lost volume. The scale of the cumulative deficit of all import volumes in 2023 compared to 2022 reduced each month starting from the middle of the year, until the final month when December brought weaker volumes across the board than were seen in December 2022. Import volumes in the final quarter of 2023 were 1% below the same quarter in 2022.

The Workspace Design Show 2024 made a triumphant return to London at the end of February, welcoming a record number of visitors over its dynamic two-day programme.

DFS Furniture records resilient performance despite challenging market

DFS Furniture has lowered its FY24 profit guidance to £20-£25m, after publishing its interim results for H1 FY24.

Despite a challenging and volatile climate, the group reports resilient underlying profit performance – PBT(A) £8.7m, up £1.6m on H1 FY23.

After a solid start to January, market demand has weakened significantly over the last two months, however, with market order volumes down c16% year on year across January and February (H1 -10%).

ACID marks 25 years with celebration in London

At a landmark event formally celebrating Anti Copying in Design’s (ACID) twenty-five years since it was founded, many from the world of IP and design were present to welcome the Minister for Intellectual Property and AI, Viscount Camrose, Creative Industries Co-Chair, Sir Peter Bazalgette, Iconic designer Sebastian Conran, Design Council CEO Minnie Moll and ACID’s Chief Counsel Nick Kounoupias, who each spoke about the importance of intellectual property (IP) and design.

Viscount Camrose gave a rousing speech applauding the design economy as well as congratulating ACID’s contribution.

“ACID has been a strong and consistent champion for SME designers for 25 years,” said The Minister, Viscount

Camrose. “Both in your own right and as a key member of the Alliance for IP, you have campaigned to ensure that IP rights are valued. The government has been pleased to work with ACID to help ensure our IP system continues to support creativity and innovation in design, and that our design system works effectively for smaller design-led businesses and lone designers.”

He further added, “I know that the introduction of criminal sanctions for unregistered designs is an important issue for ACID. We will be seeking evidence on this topic within our design consultation, so I would urge you all to respond.

I can assure you that the views of all respondents will be considered.”

Sir Peter Bazalgette, Co-Chair of the Creative Industries Council, said, “Intellectual property rights are the lifeblood of the creative industries. Without it, we don’t have creative industries. With it we have one of the most important

industrial sectors in the United Kingdom now, leading the world and delivering growth when most of the rest of the economy is sluggish.”

On AI, Bazalgette was forthright, citing that the elephant in the room is AI and machine learning, which looks like it’s going to drive a coach and horses through all the protection we’ve enjoyed the last 50 years for design and design rights. There are answers, and it shouldn’t all be in the courts of law. The answer is reforming IP, copyright and patent law. Digital watermarking and other such devices like blockchain are also available technologically

as solutions. But one thing’s for certain, he emphasised; we have to do something about it.

Xylexpo – just three months to go

With three months to go before the official opening of the 2024 edition, just under 250 exhibitors are registered so far to exhibit in Milan, in Halls 1 and 3 of Fiera Milano Rho, at Xylexpo, the biennial international exhibition of wood and furniture industry technology scheduled next May 21st to 24th.

Returning to its traditional calendar slot in May, the show will present plants, solutions, products and technology that will provide plenty of international visitors with an upgrade on all process stages, from primary operation to the most innovative finishing.

All set for unmissable opportunities at the BFM Furniture Component Expo

The British Furniture Manufacturers is gearing up for its inaugural Furniture Component Expo 24 next month. Taking place at Telford International Centre on 24th and 25th April, the expo has a packed programme of seminars over the two days.

Set to attract a broad spectrum of delegates, the event will provide an opportunity for furnituremakers to connect in a onestop-shop format. It will provide a setting for manufacturers of furniture to review, network and purchase products across

the whole supply chain from leading suppliers, all under one roof.

“We launched the event after feedback from members identified a gap in the market for furniture-makers to browse the marketplace and seek out new innovations coming into the sector, in a face-toface setting,” explains Phil Spademan.

“In our initial research in planning the expo, we were told that there is a real gap in the market for this type of business-to-business event and we are pleased to see it being

so well received across the industry.

“The show has been created for the industry, by the industry, with feedback from across the sector taken on board to deliver an event that really meets their needs.

Her talk will provide an overview of the complete service offer from DBT, which is designed to support enterprises of all sizes, including furniture businesses looking at export markets for the first time.

Naomi will also outline the role of International Trade Advisors, who are the DBT’s experts in connecting businesses with export opportunities and talk about initiatives such as the UK Export Academy, UK Export Finance and Trade Missions.

The seminar programme also features talks on best practice, sustainability, workforce and apprenticeships, alongside a workshop on carbon footprint and net zero.

The first day of the event will also feature two panel discussions. Automation vs Skills: Friend or Foe? is the topic for The Dorset Chairman Alan Payne; Racheal Baker from JJ Smith and Ian Peers from Ercol.

The second panel discussion will feature Dr Jake Lane from Silentnight Panel and is entitled Fire regulations: what next?

Silentnight has engaged with

the furniture sector on how to enable a reduction in CFR use, sharing their knowledge and findings on various subjects impacted by Fire Safety Regulations, and the segment will include a Q&A session. “This is a hugely important topic for our industry and the Furniture Component Expo 24,” says Phil Spademan. “The session will see experts from their fields offering their perspectives and insights into the research which has been conducted since the announcement of the Government Consultation on the regulations.

“BFM is seeking input into creating a round table discussion beyond the Furniture Component Expo 24 to present to Government as a further industry response, so this will provide an invaluable opportunity to collate

viewpoints across the sector.”

Other initiatives at the Furniture Component Expo 24 include an Innovation Trail, giving exhibitors at the event a new approach to reaching key audiences with their products and services.

Under the process, exhibitors can provide a pitch of their product or service to potential buyers at the show.

Delegates will be asked to vote for their favourite and the winner – as well as getting the opportunity to present to an influential audience –will also receive post-event publicity, organised by the BFM, including content across the trade association’s website and social media channels.

R J Binnie to celebrate 30 years at Furniture Component Expo

Leading upholstery component supplier, R J Binnie, is celebrating its 30 year anniversary this year by exhibiting on Stand 63 at the Furniture Component Expo 24 at the Telford International Centre between April 24th25th.

The company was founded by Managing Director, Richard Binnie, initially as a manufacturer of sewing threads to the furniture manufacturing trade. Over time, with a strong customer profile of upholstery and mattress manufacturers, the company was able to expand its range of products to become the one stop shop for upholstery components in the UK.

“We have always had a strong commitment to supporting

our customers,” explains sales director, Matthew Plant. “We see ourselves as an extension to our customer’s warehouse, so trust is very important.”

Using exact edge tracing and a feed roller with direct travel measurement, the powerEdge system guarantees that edging tape is applied precisely from start to finish. The speed, temperature and contact pressure are defined at every point along the contour, with no restrictions on butt joint locations.

The pressure roller applies the edge to the workpiece with a precise amount of force for a consistently even finish. The addition of 360° gluing ensures even the smallest of components are edged to exacting standards. Niall Cuthbert again, “The HOMAG E-310 CNC has enabled us to bring everything in-house. Previously, we had to send out curved worktops and workpieces for edging; that meant we lost control of both quality and delivery times.

“Even the curved carcass components we could manufacture in-house required the use of five or six different machines, so it was a slow and expensive process. Now we can do everything in-house on the one machine, so the CENTATEQ E-310 has definitely transformed our production capabilities.”

Efficient planning and comprehensive training

“As usual with HOMAG, the installation process of the machine was planned and implemented with German precision. The new CNC was delivered, installed and commissioned within two weeks. Everything went like clockwork, just as promised.

“Prior to delivery, my colleague and I went to Germany for a week’s training which was excellent. As part of the commissioning process. the installation engineers then trained our team onsite.

Maton Rose Interiors selects HOMAG SAWTEQ B-130 to boost efficiency

Wellingborough-based contract furnishing specialist, Maton Rose Interiors Limited, has a team of dedicated craftsmen who take great pride in all the work they produce. Established in 2011, the company employs 20 people in its modern production facilities.

“We offer an end-to-end service from concept to design, to planning, sourcing, manufacture, delivery and beyond,” claims Chris Ross, Workshop Manager at Maton Rose Interiors. State-of-the-art control system

The SAWTEQ B-130 utilises HOMAG’s CADmatic 5 high performance saw control system. With a wide range of functions, CADmatic 5 is an intuitive operating concept with clear administrative functions. What’s more, it is open for communication with other machines and software solutions, thus enabling manufacturing cells to be created.

Another feature available on the B-130 is HOMAG’s innovative operator assistance system, intelliGuide. The Classic version features an LED strip at the cutting line which guides the operator by means of light signals.

Using the coloured LED elements, machine operators can immediately see if a part has been fully processed, needs to be cut again or can be disposed of as waste. Based on which LEDs are lit up, the operator can also determine whether the workpiece being processed meets the required specifications.

The intelliGuide system provides completely intuitive machine operation that verifiably leads to significantly shorter throughput times, resulting in error-free increased output. The operator and saw work in tandem and no longer slow each other down.

Daltons Wadkin meets increasing demand for planer moulders head-on

For Daltons Wadkin, the past 12 months have seen growth in both the number of planer moulders sold, as well as the turnover for this product. This is true for models aimed at joinery production as well as higher production mill specification machines. In addition, a number of college installations show that educational establishments are starting to invest more in this type of machinery, with the SCM Profiset models proving particularly popular.

The wider economic slowdown has had mixed effects on the woodworking machinery industry, with some segments seeing a dip in demand due to rising costs and others benefiting from the push towards automation and efficient production methods. Companies within the sector, including those producing moulders, are facing pressures from rising costs. The industry trends indicate a mix of absorbing costs where possible, coupled with necessary price adjustments to offset increased expenses.

Double your capacity with Weinig

How do you double your manufacturing capacity without increasing your overheads? This isn’t a trick question. This is a reality for London-based external joinery company, Stanbrook & Nicholson. Its recent investment in a Conturex Artis+ CNC single-component production system from Weinig has seen the ambitious company introduce new revenue streams and have the capability to complete orders five times larger than ever before.

“In 2010, our company changed direction to become a specialist in external joinery,” says Ben Stanbrook, Director of Stanbrook & Nicholson. “It was at this point we bought our first window line. Since then, the goal has been to own a single component machine that could produce our complete product portfolio – reducing production times and increasing capacity without upping labour costs. In 2022, we found ourselves running at maximum capacity. We knew it was time to put our plans into action.”

In need of a machine that could produce any window component and automatically switch to another in direct sequence while offering zero change-over time on all parts (including profiles and ancillary operations), Ben and his business partner, Simon Nicholson, started investigating Weinig’s offering.

“We’d heard about the Conturex, but we presumed it would be out of our financial reach,” says Ben. “Weinig are well known for installing multi-million-pound window and door lines into large-scale manufacturing facilities. We didn’t realise a machine like the Conturex would be attainable for a smaller manufacturer like us. When comparing the Conturex to other machines on the market, we knew we were looking at a completely different animal and incorporating this machine into our production would put us on a footing with the big guys.”

Before investing in the Conturex, Stanbrook & Nicolson would batch its machining. “We offer a wide range of products – from windows and doors to roof lanterns and by-fold doors – so our orders are often compiled of multiple parts. Batching items meant we’d be grouping different orders together and having to wait for other parts to be machined before we could complete an order. It made production planning more challenging, often leaving us paying overtime to get jobs done more quickly.

“We’d use a cross-cut saw to start with and move the pieces onto our window line to complete the inner profiles. Then we’d glue up and use a CNC to do the outer profiles. We’d also need to hand-finish each piece before painting it. It was a slow process that left room for error and material damages.”

With a three or four-axis 30kW main shaft, profiling on the Conturex can be carried out in a single step, eliminating the need for a CNC and a dedicated operator. “Now, pieces go from the cross-cut saw directly onto the Conturex Artix+ before being painted. We no longer need two people running each machine. One person can now oversee the machining and also have time to support the team in the assembly area. Overtime is a thing of the past, too.”

Adaptive tooling has played a key part in the company’s production figures. Ben explains: “We worked closely with Oertli Tooling to create a tooling solution that would help us get the most out of the

Conturex, which included duplicating tooling to speed up production. This has made a huge impact on the time it takes to machine different profiles and the fast rpm on the Conturex offers a much cleaner cut, which means less finishing.”

This has been reflected in the company’s order book: “Not only can we confidently work on orders five times bigger than we could before, but we can also incorporate smaller, one-off items into our production schedules thanks to the machine’s quick and easy set-up. We no longer have to wait for a large batch to be completed before we can start work on it or halt production while we manually set up the machine for a specific order. In fact, it’s so easy to work variations into our production that we now offer an Express Service to customers.”

The benefits of virtually unlimited design options and quick, precise machining have

led to updates in the company’s portfolio. “We’ve changed from externally glazed to internally glazed designs and introduced new products, including the Heritage Slim Light – a traditional sliding sash window that features individual panes of glass. To do this the old way, it would have been painfully slow and unviable financially.”

“It’s clear to us that the Conturex can double our capacity and we’re expecting to see a return on investment almost immediately,” says Ben.

“We were maxed out with a turnover of £2-2.5m each year. Thanks to the introduction of the Conturex, we now have the capabilities to reach upwards of £5m per year without any additional staff, bigger premises or more machinery.

“Our next job is to feed the beast and win larger contracts. Having this kit in our industry sets us at a new level and we’re already feeling the buzz around it. It’s a really exciting time for us and we’re looking forward to the next chapter in our story.”

Unilap sees huge capacity and productivity benefits with Vollmer

South Yorkshire Saw & Tool Co, a small saw blade sharpening and ancillary supply company, first opened its doors for business almost 50 years ago. From its origins working out of a two-bay garage, the Doncaster manufacturer –now known as Unilap – has evolved into one of the UK’s leading saw blade and round tool manufacturing and servicing companies for the woodworking industry.

Following this impressive transformation, the business is still family-owned and operated by the sons of company founder, Darrell Hughes. Having invested heavily in sharpening technology from Vollmer UK since the late 1970s, the company is continuing its exceptional growth trajectory with investment in a further three Vollmer machines, thereby increasing capacity and compressing lead times of its 5,000+ product lines.

Unilap utilises its automated CNC technology to manufacture everything from circular saw blades, TCT- and PCD-tipped rotary tools and solid carbide tools. To manufacture the countless product lines with thousands of new, re-sharpened and serviced tools being delivered each week, the company has increased its Vollmer plant list to 11 Vollmer machines.

Adding to a portfolio that already includes QM, CHD, CHX, QXD and QWD models,

the Doncaster manufacturer purchased a Vollmer CHX840 with an HS loading system in April 2022. This was rapidly followed by a Vollmer QXD250 with the HC5 loader in July and then a Vgrind 260 with an HC4 loading system in October.

The reasoning behind the CHX840 and the QXD250 was simple. The automated CHX840 saw blade sharpening machine was purchased to add unmanned ‘lightsout’ running and alleviate capacity on the 22-employee company’s other saw blade manufacturing and servicing machines.

Likewise, Unilap already had a nine-yearold Vollmer QXD200 machine running around the clock, so upgrading to a brandnew QXD250 would add capacity. It would also support the rapid growth and give continuity of supply in the event of planned maintenance or machine downtime on the existing QXD200.

The Vgrind 260 was a completely new technology and a leap of faith for Unilap – a leap the company is delighted it has made.

“We have been buying Vollmer machines for over 40 years and we love the brand,” says Unilap Managing Director, Carl Hughes. “The build quality, innovation,

reliability and the ability to outperform all other machines is what keeps us buying Vollmer. The new machines are more userfriendly, productive, flexible and capable than ever before. The strides forward in technology from Vollmer compared to our older existing machines is phenomenal.”

With saw blade manufacturing continually growing and a series of robot-loaded Vollmer CHD machines running around the clock, Unilap wanted to automate the production of smaller-diameter saw blades to ease capacity issues and compress lead times. The solution was the Vollmer CHX840, with an HS automation system that can accommodate up to 25 saw blades.

Before the arrival of the CHX840, an employee would produce upward of 200 saw blades a week by manually loading a saw blade sharpening machine for 8 to 10 hours a day. With the arrival of the CHX840, up to 22 blades can be loaded to the automation system during the day and this will run unmanned whilst the operator can continue running a manually loaded machine. However, the major benefit is having the ability to re-load the CHX840 with another 22 saw blades at the end of the day shift to run overnight unmanned –

effectively doubling capacity.

Also contributing to the success of the business is the new QXD250 machine with its HC5 automation system. The new QXD250 was installed to underpin the growth of the rotary PCD-tipped tool division and before the arrival of the QXD250, the existing Vollmer QXD200 machine was running 24 hours a day and six days a week. This gave the company no opportunity to grow its production of specialist rotary tools. Additionally, any time-consuming complex tools would create a bottleneck.

“Despite the complexity of the PCD tools we produce, our lead times would be two to three weeks for a new tool with existing re-tipping and servicing tools often having a lead time of around one week,” says Unilap’s General Manager, Bob Young. “With the new QXD250, we can reduce the lead times to less than one week – and in many instances two to three days.”

The QXD250 was supplied with the HC5 automation system that can accommodate 28 tools up to 320mm in diameter and 250mm long with a weight of up to 25kg. Offering 24/7 unmanned running, the new QXD250 at Unilap is frequently running non-stop for up to six days without an intervention.

Comparing the new generation QXD250 to the company’s existing nine-year-old QXD200, Bob says: “The leap forward in technology with the new QXD250 is incredible. The QXD250 incorporates Vollmer’s new VPulse EDM generator that is increasing our cutting speeds by up to 40%, whilst delivering vastly improved surface finishes up to 0.1μRa.

“From a software perspective, the machine has a Windows-based interface with the ExLevel PRO software that makes programming the machine much easier with its flexibility and intuitive interface. We can programme tools 50% faster than before. Added to this, the enhanced probing technology can now probe a tool in three minutes as opposed to 30 minutes on the previous machine.

“When you add all of these factors together, the new QXD250 is at least 50% more productive than its predecessor and the overall comparative time saving can be up to 70% to 80% when you add

in the programming, set-up and probing efficiencies.”

The final machine of the three to arrive at Unilap was the Vollmer Vgrind 260, with an HC4 loading system that can accommodate up to 158 round shank tools. With its unique multi-layer machining concept that has two vertically positioned grinding spindles on the C-axis pivot point, the move to a new machine concept was a daunting prospect for Unilap – but the company now wishes it made the move sooner.

Unilap produces an ever-increasing quantity of compression cutters for the woodworking and composite sectors. However, these ‘up cut down cut’ tools incorporate a more complex geometry than standard tools. That was until the arrival of the Vgrind 260.

“To prevent delamination on surfaces, the compression tools have two opposing geometries on a single tool, which can pose more of a challenge with the programming process,” explains Bob. “However, the

Numroto software suite on the Vgrind 260 makes the programming and production of compression tools and other complex geometry tools very simple. The intuitive guidance through the process enables us to programme and produce these tools with ease, and this is further streamlining our output and cutting our lead times with complex tools.

“The new investment in state-of-the-art technology from Vollmer is a statement of intent from Unilap,” concludes Bob. “As we expand our customer base in the woodworking sector, the QXD250 and CHX840 are giving us huge capacity and productivity benefits that will be the foundation block for future growth. “But there was an additional surprise awaiting us! We were graciously invited to partake in a hands-on design experience. Guided by experts, we transformed a raw walnut plank into a finished masterpiece. This involved crafting veneers, meticulously arranging the pattern, enhancing the woodgrain with specialised products, adjusting tones, and delicately sanding to unveil the natural hues of the material. Finally, we scanned the whole piece under a spectacular scanner which transformed the physical piece into a digital design. Imperfections were corrected using software and the next morning we were sent the renders of our decor, named “Barker’s Wal-nuts”, in a bathroom setting. Absolutely mindboggling! Incredible!”

Surface Design Show sets the scene for another year of growth for REHAU

Following its successful participation at Surface Design Show this year, with many high-quality visitors to the stand, REHAU is now set for another exciting year of growth in the UK market.

At SDS, the company presented visitors with a variety of new products and services for architects and designers. This makes it extremely easy for the operator to set up the machine. In fact, the machine itself does it all automatically; you don’t have to make complicated settings or have long-term knowledge.

An easy-to-use interface

iDovetail designs the processing dimensions of each type of joint into a realtime model so that you can directly see your finished product in the process of your input. The model changes when you enter any size.

This technology gives you a very clean operating space, so you can complete all the design on the same screen. Using a real-time model like this means you can master your finished product 100% in the design stage.

The iDovetail supports six commonly used joint types, each of which can be freely modified. With a 45° flip structure, you can easily cut mitre joints.

Let the crane take the strain (one year on)

In early 2023, Furniture and Joinery Production featured a Ranheat installation that required a 200-tonne crane to install. Continuing his series of exclusive articles, Chris Franklin – MD at Ranheat Engineering – looks at the first year of the plant’s operation ...

The location of a wood-fired industrial heating system is often dictated by the location of the dust extraction system. Generally, if installing an integrated dust extraction and industrial wood-fired heating system, you don’t want it at the front of your premises.

Often, dust extraction systems are installed at the rear and sometimes access to this area is non-vehicular, particularly with a bag-based dust extraction system. Individual bags can be carried through standard doors and put into a skip.

As companies expand and with the introduction of high-speed CNC machines, the changing of bags becomes a regular and messy operation. So, the solution to getting rid of the bags is to install the existing filter onto a new storage silo.

Ranheat modify the base of the filter and supply a new storage silo that the existing filter can sit on, connected by a purposemade flanged upstand. The silo is fitted with accredited burst panels on the dirty side of the filter. By using this method, no expensive-to-run transfer fan is needed.

Obviously, with no vehicular access to the rear of the site, a large crane was needed.

Specialist lifting contractors were used to provide a 200-tonne crane able to lift the new silo and other components to the rear of the factory and to lift the existing modified filter onto the silo.

The automatically fed system was to replace an existing hand-loaded system and Ranheat modified the existing eightbag filter system. Ross Larner, Operations Director of Paneltech, indicates below the difference the new system has made to the company and the staff.

“Firstly, the staff hated changing the bags on the old system and to change the bags meant that the extraction had to be turned off, so no machines needing extraction could be used at this time,” he says. “It was a dirty task and PPE was needed. Also, the bags had to be carried through the building to be put in a skip at the front of the building.

“The hand-loaded heater it replaced meant we came into a cold factory each morning. To get the unit to operate smokeless meant the heater had to be loaded every 10-15 minutes so it was labour-intensive.

“As part of the project, we also installed a woodchipper to deal with the off-cuts. Now,

all our waste is automatically transferred to the storage silo both as chips and extracted dust. Not having to load the heater and change the dust extraction bags has eliminated two labour-intensive jobs that were also unpopular with the workforce.”

The chosen wood-chipper was an 800mm wide cutter with 22kW drive motor, complete with an 18mm screen, 40 cutters and a capacity of up to 800kgs/hr. The extraction is fitted with a humpback magnet to collect any soft metal fixings that may be present.

The main idea behind the Bravorobot is to replicate the movements of an artisan craftsman and to join two of the most important features for the perfect finishing: consistency and delicacy.

Consistency, expected from a machine even after prolonged activity, not only means reliability on the final product but also less waste. The cabin ensures the perfect quality of air inside the machine. This is important not only for the correct management of any overspray but also to reduce the dirt and dust particles that could enter and ruin the status of the painting.

filtering elements – a cardboard filter that retains the majority of the paint particles and a filter made of synthetic material which collects the finest particles. It is also possible to add a water filtration system. Water layers are generated and maintained on the sides of the conveyor: the air passing through these layers deposits the solid particles of paint contained therein. The water curtains are obtained using the continuous recirculation of water contained in two connected side tanks.

Furthermore, the machine has a fullsize filtering roof in the spraying cabin to achieve perfect control of the overspray and reduce turbulences.

Applications

The framing attribute of Bravorobot is its flexibility. The applications are countless and there is no real limit to the shapes and the geometry complexity of the parts that it can paint. It paints not only the grooves but also j shapes and curved panels, and it does so without reducing the application quality.

Wine rack manufacturer invests in two wood waste heaters
