Introduction Tina Gregoric

Nanotourism on the Istrian Countryside An invitation to address the future of the stone-built town of Bale in Istria and its municipality area has been an intriguing challenge and an opportunity to engage two main issues simultaneously: tourism and the countryside. Over the last decades, tourism has established itself as the world’s second-fastest-growing industry and, in addition to the proclaimed benefits, produced a myriad of devastating and long-lasting environmental, economic and social effects on the local realities. Architects have largely been supporting this overwhelming trend of mass-tourism and growth, and have rarely played a critical role, regardless of the issues in diverse fragile contexts from the Costa Brava to Pacific islands. On the other hand, the countryside in relation to the cities has been neglected as a focus of architects and planners for many decades. The preoccupation with the problems and potentials of the city excluded rigorous research and response to the highly transformative realities of villages with their surroundings. In 2012, even the loud proclaimer of the city, Rem Koolhaas, started to declare the urgent need to readdress the countryside and in 2017 announced a major Guggenheim exhibition for 2019 – Countryside: Future of the World.

While still waiting to reassess its content and potentially wider influence on a global scale, we will continue to act in a bottom-up manner both in the city and on the countryside with nanotourism, a participatory and locally oriented, bottom-up alternative to the current downsides of conventional tourism that was initiated in 2012. Nanotourism was established as two-fold, distinctive design research we led together with Aljoša Dekleva as mentors in 2014 parallel to the experimental BIO 50 – Ljubljana Biennial of Design – and the Architectural Association Visiting School Slovenia 1. The international teams of designers, architects and students have been defining the term and notion of nanotourism, while researching existing examples of nanotourism, but mostly by creating new, site-specific experiences in their regions, spanning from cities like Zagreb to small towns like Vitanje in Slovenia. A comprehensive design-research process intensely integrating local communities, boosting local economies and aiming beyond the duration of the Biennial earned the nanotourism team the Biennial’s highest honor – the Best Collaboration Award – which was fundamental for the years-long continuation of several local initiatives and additional nanotourism projects within the intense summer workshops of the AA Nanotourism Visiting School, as well as a semester-long design studio at TU Wien.

1 BIO50 - 24th Biennial of Design in Ljubljana, Slovenia (February - September 2014) was profoundly curated not as an exhibition, but as a laboratory for design by Jan Boelen, the founder and artistic director of Z33 House for Contemporary Art and head of the Social Design Master program at Design Academy Eindhoven.

An intensive, on-site student workshop was an essential start to deeply grasp the multi-layered reality of the Istrian countryside bordering the Adriatic Sea, yet not overbuilt by mass-tourism. The dually-named town of Bale-Valle originates from a Roman settlement and is dominated today by the 15th century Bembo Castle and the later built church bell tower, yet its immediate and overwhelming characteristic is the stone in all possible formats and applications, visible upon the first glance of the narrow, cobbled streets within the fortified walls. Located close, but far enough from the coastline, the role and potential of the hilltop town as a dispersed hotel would seem almost self-evident. Still, within the scope of nanotourism, an explicit, participatory and site-specific approach emphasizing Bale’s identities is called for. To uncover them, an intense immersion of the students into the everyday realities is required in order to gradually develop an overall bottom-up strategy for the whole town, while deliberately kicking off with four distinct starting points or identities: Wine and Ruins (two existing ones) and Stone and Valleys (two added ones). Together, they propose a specific experience of the Town as Dispersed Hotel, carefully attempting to even go beyond Albergo Diffuso, the admirable concept established decades ago.

Searching for a locally oriented, responsible alternative to conventional tourism within this unique cultural heritage has presumably never had such crucial, predefined conditions as in Bale. Long-lasting, sustainable development of the town and its surroundings was a carefully curated agenda of the local municipality. During the period of intense, short-sighted devastation of the Adriatic coast, they opted for an alternative – a ten-year strategy Bale Shoreline – Spatial Planning Development Study smartly formulated by the Croatian architecture studio 3LHD. It addition to setting the course, it forged new, innovative forms of the local economy, where local residents became sort of shareholders of a company providing touristic accommodation. This economic model furthermore generated grounds for everyday needs of its population, such as a kindergarten and similar facilities. All these interlinked processes prove to be unavoidable for any relevant development of the countryside or tourism. Outstanding responses to the students’ presentation at the final jury induced several new students and teachers to start proactive initiatives within their immediate surroundings. It is a pleasure to see nanotourism continually advance.

Design Studio – Brief Tina Gregoric

After decades of a booming tourism industry with a devastating impact on territories and economies all over the world, are there smaller-scale, non-intrusive ways of tourism? The compact, stone-built town of Bale in Istria, managed to avoid countless forms of European coastal devastation and thus provides the potential to rethink the town itself as a polygon for a locally-oriented alternative in the form of a specific dispersed hotel. The design studio will pursue the ongoing development of nanotourism as a creative critique of the current environmental, social and economic downsides of conventional tourism by offering a participatory, locally-oriented, bottom-up alternative. The design process will start in a two-fold manner: by researching and learning from existing models of dispersed hotels and by understanding and identifying the site-specific cultural, historical, material and social strata of Bale in order to integrate and recompose these notions within the tangible design project. Town as Dispersed Hotel was initiated by the pre-set development strategy that the Municipality of Bale has been relying on for the last years of their cautious development, as the town holds a unique position as an on-and-off seashore. How can the nanotouristic principles of bottom-up, participation, community and environmental responsibility drive this critical, yet progressive design approach to rethink the organization and experience of the town as an accommodation territory? 10

Studio Background The theme and location of the studio were chosen upon invitation by UrLab, an initiative of the Croatian students Tina Modrusan, Nika Mrden and Jelena Perusinovic, the municipality of Bale and project developers Mon Perin. UrLab set up the framework for the CastrumLab project – a collaboration of international architecture schools 1 drafting scenarios for Bale, based on its built environment, its regional and historical context, as well as potentials for touristic development.

Excursion Bale An excursion to Bale with a design workshop from 17.10.–21.10.2015, upon invitation by the local tourist agency Mon Perin, the Municipality of Bale and the initiative Castrum Lab, marked the start of the design studio. The opening of the design workshop itself was organized by CastrumLab as an interuniversitary kick-off in Bale, giving an overview of the strategy framework to the TU Wien students, as well as a group of students from IUAV Venezia.

Kick-off lecture by Tina Gregoric in Kastel Bembo, Bale

TU Wien was invited to examine the potentials for implementing a dispersed hotel in Bale, using strategies of nanotourism. IUAV Venezia was invited to work on the topics "Redeveloping the Historical City" as well as "Reviving Cultural Heritage." IUAV Venezia had also already held a studio in Bale in the previous term of 2015, in which the whole town had been measured and existing plans had been drawn – plans, which were kindly provided to all students. The University of Ljubljana and the University of Zagreb pursued their teaching activities in Bale in the following semesters. Workshop Bale In addition to the kick-off, the students received valuable input from Sasa Begovic of 3LHD architects, who presented his study of a ten-year-strategy for the developme nt of Bale, based on the goal of leaving both the structure and the character of the town intact, introducing rules for renovation, and adding few elements of touristic program and activities. In the following days of the workshop, the students split into work groups according to different topics – or rather, identities of Bale – and started to engage in explorations and field trips in the town of Bale as well as its surroundings, regularly checking back to the temporary workshop studio in the center of Bale to discuss findings and exchange insights. Their excursions led them to immerse into local micro-economies and site-specific characteristics, meet local experts and stakeholders of the region and gather an understanding of local vernacular and contemporary architecture. After the workshop days, four teams had formed. Each had dedicated their field research to one of the immanent, but previously rarely well-established identities of Bale, and was preparing to use this identity as a basic principle for their share of the common project of Bale as dispersed hotel: Stone, Ruins, Wine and Valleys.

Re-Thinking Tourism Symposium 02 Upon returning from the excursion, another layer of input for the students was presented by the Re-Thinking Tourism 02 Symposium 1, organized by the Department of Architectural Typology and Design at the TU Wien on 22.10.2015. Esau Acosta, Theo Deutinger, Tina Gregoric, Norbert Kettner, Elke Krasny, Dietmar Steiner and Susanne Waiz lectured and discussed about the increasing environmental, social and economic impacts of contemporary tourism, searching for possible potentials, alternatives, strategies and concepts as active responses to the conventional ways of travelling, visiting, exploring, exchanging, accommodating, presenting and representing. 1 Poster Symposium Re-Thinking Tourism 02, 22.10.2015, TU Wien

Over the course of four months, the projects were conceived, designed and articulated in weekly critique sessions, on the conceptual as well as the architectural level, based on the identities of Bale, found, selected and researched in the on-site workshop. Final Presentation In the Final Presentation in January 2016, the students’ work was presented as one common project consisting of four individual projects: Stone – Matter and Place, Ruins – Butterflies' Garden, Wine – The Bale and Valleys – Bale / Valle, with each project taking care of different typical hotel elements, complementing each other to provide the necessary program for a new, alternative form of tourism and accommodation in Bale. Outlook On the following pages, first Town as Dispersed Hotel is presented as the common project, followed by an extended presentation of the four individual projects in the succeeding chapters.

Developing Bale Sasa Begovic

Thoughts on the Design Studio The Design Studio at TU Wien is based on the Bale Spatial Planning Development Concept and Strategy 1, which has been used by the Municipality of Bale for the last 15 years as the reference document for a cautious development of their town and its issues of tourism. It raises important questions about the re-thinking of tourism: How can a community-friendly and environmentally responsible design approach re-think the organization and experience of a town as an accommodation territory? Can a non-intrusive way of dealing with tourism as an opposition to the conventional way of building – and sometimes overbuilding – the cities or territories be viable and prosperous for the smaller communities?

1 Bale Shoreline – Spatial Planning Development Study, published 2007 by Sasa Begovic's studio 3LHD

The Design Studio has been investigating those questions and went even further into deep research of existing models of conventional and alternative tourism. The city of Bale in Istria is being used as such a locally-oriented alternative in the form of the Town as Dispersed Hotel, strongly focusing on the spatial potential of existing and abandoned buildings. The results of this studio are amazing projects, dealing not only with specific stone houses as accommodation units, but also with other “public areas of the conventional hotel” spread all around the medieval city of Bale. 18

19

By adding temporary, adaptive, generating, innovative objects and structures (parasites), they manage to show possible alternatives for transforming existing city spaces into places of participation, locally-oriented alternative production and social interaction with neighboring parts of the city. Bale Spatial Planning Development Concept and Strategy The study provides guidelines for the development and revitalization of the Bale region on the Istrian peninsula in Croatia. The development strategy for the City of Bale and its surrounding area focuses on local characteristics such as cultural identity, natural resources and architectural heritage. The study takes into account ways to protect the natural landscape by avoiding mass construction in the area and emphasizes its touristic potential. In particular, it highlights the considerable potential of Bale to develop selective and different types of tourism targeting more sophisticated and selective visitors than other tourist destinations in Croatia. In a time when Croatian politicians emphasize space as a fundamental national treasure and acknowledge the problems of unplanned urbanization, Bale stands out with its extraordinary natural resources, practically intact environment, and rich architectural as well as cultural heritage. Furthermore, the study outlines the strategy for economic development of the region. The municipal government of Bale is seeking ways to tap into available resources with the goal of retaining the local population and elevating their living standards. The main interest of the local population lies in protecting the coastline from overbuilding and finding a strategy for the sustainable development of the whole district. The proposed revitalization of the Bale town and shoreline would react to these tendencies and interests by pioneering positive trends of the areas economic growth. The development would bring new employment, motivate community participation and involvement, and inspire the activation of local resources as well as the growth of small businesses to cater to the direct and indirect needs of tourists. The area would cater to both day visitors and longer-term tourists who would be staying in local accommodation facilities that already exist: Beside unique traditional lodgings on farms, so-called stancijas, there is the medieval Old City of Bale, once residence of the Venetian Bembo family, which can already be considered as a Town as Dispersed Hotel – a new, alternative and participatory way of tourism.

The Common Strategy

The common strategy enhances the concept of Albergo Diffuso 1 and applies it to the town of Bale, creating the Town as Dispersed Hotel. It drafts site-specific scenarios and activities that allow the place to be discovered and experienced on multiple new levels. It neither invents qualities which were non-existent before, nor does it implement structures which significantly alter the place in the long term. Instead, the concept of Town as Dispersed Hotel uses non-invasive strategies and re-activates existing sites as well as intrinsic qualities – thus allowing for a new reading of the story of Bale. Town as Dispersed Hotel is the result of four project teams working on the topic for six months. The resulting four projects are based on local identities, some of which were distilled from a pool of topics represented in the touristic concept of the municipality; some others were not evident at first, but then got rediscovered through on-site research. Each identity adds another layer and another set of activities to the dispersed hotel. In combination, these identities can take over all functions of a conventional hotel and even extend its functionality beyond standard expectations. While the project Stone – Matter and Place 2 raises awareness for the omnipresence of the town's most essential building material, the project Ruins – Butterflies' Garden 3 reanimates ruins and creates unique retreats in a cultivated biotope. Wine – The Bale Experience 4 provides a series of locations that allow the process of winemaking to be experienced in the town center. And finally, the project Valleys – Bale / Valle 5 rediscovers a series of most distinctive topographic phenomena and fills them with activities.

1 Albergo diffuso, Italian for "dispersed hotel", concept established in the 1980s in Italy to describe tourist accomodation based on typical infrastructure and services of a hotel, but not limited to its spatial boundaries. The accommodation units and service areas are distributed throughout existing structures and neighbourhoods of historic villages and town centers, being less intrusive than conventional hotels, providing more authentic experiences.

Stone – Matter and Place

Jonathan Lutz, Thomas Sommerauer, Raphael Thalmeier

Self-reflecting and re-evaluating the omnipresent characteristics of stone in Bale's built environment Bale is a town built from stone. Even though – at least to a visitor – this is one of the town’s most obvious characteristics, the topic of stone is highly underrepresented, almost non-existent in the touristic story being told in Bale. The project Stone – Matter and Place can be seen as a manual that aims to retell this story and create new places of awareness. By researching the surfaces, structures, openings and atmospheres of stone and finding ways to present these characteristics, the project challenges the perception of stone as a building material, but also as a creator of unique atmosphere in Bale.

An important strategy and part of the project’s field research is the involvement of users – short-term visitors, long-term visitors, as well as locals. By educating and involving users in the topics and qualities imminent to the place, new forms of collaboration emerge and allow the project to evolve on its own. The three sub projects – Mental Spa, Open Archive, Immersed Sleeping – can be seen as case studies that act as catalysts for the reevaluation of spatial qualities and the reintegration of vacant buildings and ruins as new, thriving spaces of the town.

The kinds of people I work for are in equal number with the types of stones I work with first the people who live in Bale, second those who stay here for longer and third those who visit us for a short stay. At the same time there are three types of stone - the soft one, the hard one and the very hard one. What's also important is that you have to treat some more roughly than others. Spreading my knowledge would be something worthwile, I would argue ...

The way we understand Bale as a destination is rather progressive: While we try to conserve the city in its distinct quality, our aim is to radically increase the comfort and the well-being of our guests in the same move. Basically we are positioning ourselves in an international context that is all about fulfilling as-high-as-possible standards in the end.

While as an artist I am not used to thinking in economic terms, I consider the ruins as an integral part of Bale. Trying to merge those two principles might be the way to a future interesting for all of us.

Mental Spa Project 1

The Mental Spa marks the anti-stone experience. By providing a clear view from a ruinous building, isolated from the omnipresence of the material of stone, the Mental Spa gives the user a moment of contemplation and clarity. The temporary, but complete absence of stone allows for a new reading of this material in the context of Bale, amplifying its importance.

Open Archive Project 2

Apart from being the point of arrival and administration for the dispersed hotel, the Open Archive allows the presence of stone in Bale to be addressed and experienced on the knowledge and research level. Guests and locals can study the built heritage of Bale and develop contemporary strategies to work with this heritage. The Open Archive itself becomes a model for these strategies: By solidifying a ruin with local stone, excess existing material from another project gets redistributed, illustrating a self-healing approach to the place.

Immersed Sleeping Project 3

Immersed Sleeping provides a unique way of outdoor lodging, an experience specific to the material of stone. To preserve the character of the ruin in which it is located, a new element – an inhabitable sequenced stone wall – is inserted into the ruin. The sequenced stone wall uses a geometry of niches and corners serving different activities, providing spaces with more and more privacy as one immerses deeper into the center.

Ruins – Butterflies' Garden

Weronika Bogal, Urska Gantar, Adam Lyko, Barbora Tothova

Butterflies and people, activating and colonizing the town's ruins, making a virtue of its decay The region around Bale is strongly characterized by its broad biodiversity. Fostered by the mild climate and the karst flora, the region forms a natural habitat for a variety of butterfly species. In order to experience their ephemeral beauty and life cycle not just in wild nature, but in the center of Bale, the project challenges a seeming weakness of the town – its vacancy and decay, apparent in the variety of ruins in the town center. The project's research on life conditions and the life cycle of butterflies shows that the environment provided by the abandoned stone buildings in Bale, with

their combination of heat storage and wild vegetation, create an ideal bio tope for butterflies. As a result, the project transforms a series of adjacent ruins into a sequence of gardens usable and inhabitable by butterflies and people. An introduced system of wild and planted vegetation, paths, ladders, hanging tents and other unobtrusive and non-invasive architectural elements allow for the activation of formerly abandoned places in the town's center and an experience full of analogies to the life cycle and fascination of butterflies.

Eating Area Project 1

The Eating Area transforms a sequence of ruins into a spatial experience and self-organized culinary retreat. Ascending and descending from garden to garden, from kitchen, to barbecue, to picnic via cantilevered paths, ladders and stairs, it provides spaces that can be used by residents for gatherings and community cooking, but also by daily guests for a small picnic retreat.

Attractions are a cluster of reanimated ruins, interweaving the spaces of the butterfly habitat with spaces providing attractions for public life and community activities. Areas for workshops, a summer cinema, a children's playground and a butterflies' glasshouse give the users a feeling of discovering a mixture between a participatory museum and a full-size playground.

Accommodation includes the areas within the ruins' sequence that are designated for sleeping and resting. Analog to the butterfly's cocoon, hanging tents provide easy accommodation for those guests seeking less privacy. For a more introverted accommodation experience within the ruins, private sleeping spaces, fully equipped with outdoor showers, are also reserved.

Wine – The Bale Experience

Tin Jelavic, Besarta Krasniqi, Clarissa Meneghetti Brendler

Representing the local production of wine in the town center, creating tangible experiences Istrian wine production is strongly apparent in the landscape around Bale, represented by various vineyards, wineries with direct marketing and agriturismo accommodation. At the same time, the center of Bale lacks this presence. Only when looking closer at local bars' wine menus, one might find a clue of locally produced wine. The project introduces the atmospheres of wine as well as elements of the winemaking cycle to the town center of Bale and connects it with a network of wineries and vineyards in the surroundings. As an analogy to the main containers of the production process – grape, barrel

and bottle – three different locations allow people to experience this process and engage in the topic of wine on several levels. The created activities generate attraction for residents and guests equally. By working with empty buildings, ruins and landscape elements of Bale, the project interweaves the topic of wine with the town's existing fabric, thus adding a new chapter to the story of Bale that has always been present, but previously lacked the possibility to be experienced.

Open Kitchen & Restaurant Project 1

With a view over the central valley of Bale, Open Kitchen & Restaurant becomes a signature dining destination of Bale. To adapt the existing buildings to the new use, they are being retrofitted with new structures like roofs, pergolas and stairs. As a reference to the role of the barrel in the winemakling process, old barrels are upcycled and used to construct hammocks and furniture elements.

Bar & Reception operates beyond the project Wine – The Bale Experience, since it operates the main desk for the whole dispersed hotel. The main desk is dDirectly accessible from the street and guests can book their stay or ascend a staircase to a wine bar on the second floor. The facade as well as the roof of the second floor are constructed from curved barrel planks, creating different scenarios of light incidence and transparency.

Wine Accommodation Project 3

Wine Accommodation enables a sleeping experience in a setting similar to a wine cellar. Combined with a garden spa in an adjacent ruin and a vinotheque stocked with locally produced wine, the bed itself is made on top of a walk-in wine rack, ready for the guest to fall asleep directly after a well-nuanced and enjoyable wine tasting.

Valleys – Bale / Valle

Osama Almughanni, Igor Petrychenko, Kenan Zvizdic

Accentuating oblivious, but eminent elements of topography and landscape The most eminent landmark of Bale is at the same time it's most inconspicuous one – at least through the eyes of a visitor. However, when observing the town from the air or looking at satellite imagery, the most obvious and distinctive feature of Bale is a huge crater, equal in size to the historic town center right next to it. With this in mind, the name of the town also explains itself: Bale, or its Italian name Valle, is a reference to the valley that makes the settlement next to it so very unique. Over time, it had remained devoid of buildings. It is this vacuum that strengthens the presence of the valley, yet is only visible to the

residents of the surrounding houses and to visitors who dare to leave the paved streets of the town and explore the narrow gaps between the buildings. By researching the topography of the wider region, the project team discovered that the valley of Bale's center is not just an isolated phenomenon, but part of a series of smaller and larger valleys. The project ties these valleys together, activates them and assigns each of them individual qualities and activities, allowing this phenomenon to be experienced in the most site-specific and atmospheric ways.

Overview of valleys and projects

Town as Dispersed Hotel – Bale in Istria

Lobby Project 1

As the valley with the most prominent location in Bale, Lobby represents the most extroverted program of the dispersed hotel. It is a meeting place, an event space, a common recreation area and a generous public space at the same time. By only implementing small platforms of different sizes in the valley, its topography stays unaltered; the intervention is well- defined, but at the same time submerges into the natural landscape.

Along the west coast, moving from south to the north, the first fortified town and Citadel was Bale (ital. Valle) a smaller municipal center between Pula and Porec and the inside of the present Istria. The Italian name “Valle” literally means “Valley”.

The idea was noticeable in a way after a simple marking all of the valleys. This elliptical framing represents each valley as an own spatial space, where various programs and activites of a future “dispersed hotel” could take place.

sport

Defining the programs was relying on the historical and spatial context and aspects of the place as well as on the needs of the future hotel. A study of each valley’s terrain allowed also for a better understanding of possible activities inside these spaces.

The form is originated from the terrain of the valleys. Trying to keep the landscape as it was, we have modified the new structures that should just "fit into" the existing "natural" one, representing each valley as it is was/will be.

Lobby

The general idea is to design environmentally-friendly platforms which could be placed on the flat or suitable places on the valley’s terrain, while considering that the valley’s contour lines do not change.

The distribution of these platforms in a circular way will establish a center of a new public space for the town.

In this concept, the central platform is going to be the base of town’s events such as jazz festivals or outdoor exhibitions.

The different sizes of these platforms have different use approaches. They will also guide the users out of the middle valley to the other valleys in town.

Garden Project 2

Not all valleys are well-defined and recognizable as such at first sight. The Garden valley is such an overlooked and overgrown place. By closing the valley with a thin circular wall that uses narrow gaps for access, the garden becomes a precisely defined space with a strong, introverted atmosphere. The wall fades out the surroundings and creates a space for contemplation and meditation.

Garden

Closing the valley is our approach to make it appreciated again. The density of the trees inside this valley differentiates it from its surroundings and offers a special relaxing experience within its walls.

The relation between the visitors and the wall outside alludes to the already existing experience in the town, which is about moving circularly until finding the gap.

After following the wall, entering the valley is only possible through these narrow gaps that will be selected based on the view to the valley as well as the terrain.

Within these high closed walls, a new space for meditation inside will make the visitors perceive the beauty of this valley again.

Sport Project 3

As a place of high activity, the Sport valley provides a circular running track as a distinctive element that defines the valley. The existing stone ramp remains and allows the bottom plateau to be used as a multipurpose sports field.

Sport

The present condition of the agricultural valley as well as the existing ramp provide a convenient way to integrate the future hotel's sports program into it.

The platform all around the valley is designed for running. The alreading existing ramp will be the basic connection element towards the bottom of the valley.

Considering the current nature of the valley, the natural grass there remains the basic ground. All kinds of sports on grass will be possible within this valley.

The platform could also be used as a space for sitting and observing the bottom of the valley while sports or other events are taking place.

Workshop Project 4

The presence of stone and the visibility of rocks in the crater of the Workshop valley make it destined for creating a learning space, where knowledge about the formation of the karst topography and the geological composition of the landscape is imparted. The almost levitating roof improves the conditions for working, learning and lingering and creates a shelter from sun and rain.

Workshop

The stone as a basic construction element of Bale is naturally presented in this valley. The idea here is to enhance this presentation and activate the space.

This valley is going to be highlighted by establishing a basic roof that defines the new valley's space and provides an appropriate workshop situation.

The house nearby shall be used for the different needs of the valley such as storages or bathrooms.

The form defines two areas: the roofed area as an observation space highlighting the stones, and the opened-roof area where the main workshop takes place.

The density of the trees as well as the very sloped terrain make this valley very special. The designed ring around it will extend the already existing house terraces into an observation circle.

This ring terrace is a summer platform. Street food trucks and mobile sellers are essential for this concept. They will be placed either next to this ring or on it.

This terrace has a width of three meters, offering space for pedestrians to walk or sit and eat while experiencing the nature of the valley.

A kind of symposium with the surroundngs will also be embedded here. The enclosing houses will be necessary to fulfill certain needs in this concept.

Pool Project 6

The topography of the valleys with their gently sloped terrain and lowered flat bottom plateau provide good conditions for the Pool, an artificial pond with easy access. Again, a multipurpose circular element becomes the distinctive element of the valley: Boardwalk, sun deck, shaded area, access stairs/ladder and springboard at the same time.

Pool

Since the terrain of this valley gently slopes, it was the main reason for choosing it as the pool area of the new hotel. Accessing the bottom of the valley will also be easier from here than from somewhere else.

Still, the stairs as an important element for a pool within our circular understanding was the main issue on the design level.

Two different spaces will be achieved through this concept. The terrace above that works as a sunbathing area as well as the area underneath that provides sun protection.

Adding the water inside the valley will have result in many technical needs we are aware of. However, the stable soil and the stony terrain make this approach feasible.

Plants Project 7

The Plant valley balances between being land art and a walkable agricultural production space. In this dense field of vertical rods used to cultivate plants and herbs native to the region around Bale, the variety of Bale’s flora can be discovered and experienced on many sensory levels.

Plants

In this valley, we are using the same vertical element. The circle will be applied through these vertical elements in order to observe a special experience of a circle in a colorful way.

The narrow spaces between these elements will create the paths through the different spheres, where each sphere may present one plant.

The different, special vegetation of Bale and Istria will be densely planted within these elements. This unique plant exhibition will present the circle as a special experience.

The density of the plants or the used vertical elements still do not block the horizontal view. Each point of view will offer a distincitve and extraordinary perception of the design.
