Month in Review

Well, well, well…. It looks like Geek Nation really do make dreams come true! March was our most epic month to date, and it’s all because of you! We sold out YET AGAIN, and are so happy you were a part of that. We loved getting to feature Darryll Jones, an artist we’ve long admired, and to bring things current with his poster nodding to Mr. Solo’s plane ride to the ground. We’re also pretty excited about the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron, and can’t wait to see who won free tickets! Now, if you’ll excuse us, we’ve got some binge watching to do to catch up to this latest season of Game of Thrones in our Thrones of Games shirts. As hard as it is to believe, not everyone in the office has seen it… Peace, love, and geeky goodness for all! T HE

A brief look at Frank Kozik Whether you’ve been a vinyl collector for years, or just happened to catch sight of one of the cute, furry, little Labbits that seem to pop up everywhere, there’s a good chance you have heard of Frank Kozik. This self-taught artist began designing posters for local bands in Austin, Texas, eventually starting his own record label. Somewhere along that creative journey, the idea for his iconic Labbit emerged.

2 0 1 5 This year marks the fourth anniversary of our hometown showcasing some of the biggest names in the biz with Denver Comic Con. When the Con opened in 2012, it saw over 27,000 people come through the doors, which was the second largest opening in history for an event like this. With over 85,000 in attendance for 2014, this year is poised to make it the third largest in the country, behind New York and San Diego. We are a pretty proud little city… Perhaps the reason we’re most excited about DCC this year is because we get to be so involved! Not only will you get to meet the entire Geek Fuel crew, we’ll also be doing exclusive giveaways at our booth and co-sponsoring the oh-so-awesome VIP launch party. It feels good to give something back to a community we are beyond lucky to be involved with, and we can’t wait to chat with our fans in person. Speaking of fans...we’re big fans of some of the guests on board this year! Cary Elwes Most notoriously staged as Westley in The Princess Bride, his long and incredible career has put him in the role of some of our favorite characters.

Christopher Lloyd Whether you know him as Doc Emmet, Uncle Fester, or Judge Doom, you know him as an Emmy Award winning actor and all-around talented human being.

Sean Astin With his first film credit coming in under the tutelage of Steven Spielberg in The Goonies, Astin’s portfolio is a testament to the places true talent can take you.

Emma Caulfield While she is best known for her role as Anya Jenkins on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Caulfield is also an accomplished and talented writer and producer.

Amy Acker Her acting credits include favorites of ours, like Cabin in the Woods, Alias, and Angel. She currently stars in the CBS series Person of Interest.

One thing we really love about Denver Comic Con is how important it is to the Con to highlight local businesses and artists. While we are obviously on board with this because we’re local, we’d love to highlight a few of our own favorites from around town. 84Pages Blending street art with a cartoon vibe, he creates some incredible pieces on just about any surface you can think of.

Lowbrow Part art supplier, part vinyl toy shop, and 100% incredible, this shop provides endless ways to entertain your creative mind.

Stan Yan A staple of every cool event in the city, Stan’s zombie caricatures are an incredible extension of his indy cartooning career.

Kozik’s first pairing with Kidrobot, a premier creator of limited edition vinly toys, came in 2003 when they partenered to craft the first of many series of the adorable animal. In addition to this work Kozik has partnered with other toy manufacturers throughout the years to produce limited-edition offerings. In 2007 Kozik launched Ultraviolence, which includes his own offerings in not just vinyl, but fiberglass, bronze, and porcelain. The most recent addition to Kozik’s impressive resume is his newest position with Kidrobot as their Creative Director. He took on the position in November of last year and has big plans as the head of the creative team for this renowned brand. In a recent interview with Clutter magazine, Kozik said, “Me coming onboard made things possible for them, them bring me onboard made things possible for me, so it’s a real good team partnership kinda thing.” As fans of the man for years, we’re especially excited to see all the things coming down the pipeline at Kidrobot. They just announced the release of their collaboration with DC Comics, which is a huge score for the collector and the geek in all of us.

ORIGINS Hailing from the corn-fed Midwest landscape, I ended up finding my home in the mountains of Colorado. After trying to, unsuccessfully, work for the government right out of college, I discovered this creative heart needs to roam free. I began writing as a way to make a little extra money and found out I had a hidden passion for it. Since this epic discovery, I have made it my life and found an outlet at Geek Fuel where I get to pair my passion for words with the ability to share it on our social platforms and in this here Geek Guide!

“IF YOU WANT TO GO FAST, GO ALONE. IF YOU WANT TO GO FAR, GO TOGETHER.” There is nothing quite like the camaraderie of a team that goes far together. Their dynamic is great, their ideas come together as a plan, and they MAKE. THINGS. HAPPEN. In honor of this month’s Team Theme, we’d like to highlight a few of our favorites for you.

“We accept the fact that we had to spend an entire Saturday saving the world from those doing wrong. What they did was wrong, but we think you’re crazy to make us sign a movie deal to show the world who we really are. You see us as you want to see us...but each one of us is a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, and a criminal.”

Sometimes your team is just so good that someone steals your thunder. We love The Breakfast Club because it was a team that showed us how similar we all are under the superficial surface. Teen angst is hard, but they fought through it together to show Mr. Vernon who was who.

14 10

Childhood bonds are hard to break, and nothing proved this to us more than the Goonies crew and their epic search for the one thing that would keep them together forever. A truffle shuffle here, some wayward Spanish there, a trip through the caves, and a team of friends who never say die.

Heros in a half shell. Not hero. One episode of this classic-cartoon-turnedmega-movie is all you needed to see to know that the Turtles don’t do business alone. They live together, they fight crime together, and they end the day by eating pizza together. That’s true team spirit.

You don’t need to watch another scary movie to know that the supernatural always takes the lone wolf. These guys banded together to save the city from a fate worse than death: the Staypuff Marshmallow Man. In doing so, they showed the true meaning of team and sticking together.

What do you get when a strategic card game teams up with a real-time live player video game? Reverie World Studios’ latest debut: Kingdom Wars II: Battle. It brings a fresh perspective to the fantasy, real-time strategy game genre, featuring all of the traditional elements of your favorite fast-paced skirmish games. While it has competitive multi-player mode, siege-style combat, and an epic single-player campaign, it also brings in a few new features that take it to the next level. Without a doubt, one of our favorite features in this game is the crafting abilities. Featuring hundreds of combinations for materials, designs, and layouts, you can create everything from an impenetrable castle wall to a steel broadsword. This complex system allows you to research new industrial technologies, create cards, and build components that you can trade in the marketplace. As a game that is built to evolve, you will enjoy the constant addition of new campaigns, both in single-player mode and MMO modes. There is almost no limit to the variations your game can take on, and the fluidity of the new campaigns means no repetition.
