The Window Shop Jewelers Priceless Treasures In Northport

Generations of shoppers have been finding beautiful treasures at The Window Shop Jewelers since 1976. Today this Northport “gem” offers sought-after pieces from Pandora, Andrea Candela and more. “We’re a Pandora ‘Shop-in-Shop,’ carrying the entire collection from the original bracelets to the newest watches and everything in-between,” said owner Jean McNeill. Pieces from Spanish designer Andrea Candela are hand-wrought delights in Sterling Silver with 18K gold accents, freshwater pearls, gems and diamonds. A new line from European sculptor Petra Azar features Sterling Silver and 14k jewelry with patented magnetic clasps, making them easy to open and extremely chic.Charms resembling tiny gift boxes from her “Box of Love” collection open to reveal hidden scrolls or keepsakes. From Italy, Adami & Martucci weave metals into fabric-like bracelets and knotted necklaces, for truly extraordinary gifts. “We carry many unique and beautiful pieces in the store, in both Sterling and karat gold, and I’m always looking for jewelry that’s a little different, a little out of the ordinary, but still with a classic flair,” said McNeill. Open seven days a week, The Window Shop Jewelers also does repair work. Gift cards are available in case your special someone likes to hand-pick their own gift. With personalized service and a selection to drool over (not to mention fresh-baked cookies on the counter!), The Window Shop Jewelers has you covered for the holidays. beauty & fashion Holiday Make-Up Plus Great Make-Up Gifts

“Tis the season” for giving and holiday shopping is on our minds. Many of us are making our list and checking it twice! This year, celebrate the season with the “feel good” gift of beauty for the ladies in your life.

A sure hit and personal favorite for any make-up lover on your list is a high quality make-up brush set. Great brushes are an investment and a luxury that many women may not splurge on for themselves, making it a great gift to give. Brush sets are a good value at holiday time, as they’re usually priced very fairly. Good brushes make all the difference in make-up application and are necessary tools in achieving the bestdesired look. Another gift-giving option that is fun to give and get are make-up 8

kits that contain everything you need for face, eyes and lips. Some are so gorgeously packaged that they make such a beautiful presentation to give. These are usually limited edition sets at holiday time and offer the trendiest palettes of the season, like bold jewel-toned eye shadows, wine-stained lip-gloss and liners for sultry/smudgy black-rimmed eyes. The hardest part of your shopping will be deciding what to give and what to keep for yourself! • Rosemarie Spinella, La Piele Boutique Spa, 631-629-4334

beauty & fashion Quick And Easy Tips For Your Holiday Party This is the most magical time of the year with the holidays just around the corner! We’re all getting our holiday outfits picked out and wondering how we’re going to do our hair and make-up. It’s always great to take the time to come see your professional stylist, but sometimes our schedules don’t allow us to get to the salon for that special night.

Hair

So here are some quick and easy hairstyles that will help you make a statement : If your hair is long, layers will always help you get a lot of body. Take 1-inch sections, hold the hair straight up and add some hairspray in the root area. Continue to roll the hair into a tube-like shape and place it on the root of the hair, hold it in place with some bobby pins or pin clips, spray lightly when you are done. [Sebastian Shaper Plus- found it to be great when working with setting your hair]. Get yourself ready and leave your hair for about half an hour, let them loose and lightly brush your hair to have a beautiful, sexy look for the night.

If you’re into an easy upsweep, split hair from ear to ear, give a little tease on top from the forehead to the crown, spray lightly and comb top section into a ponytail, keeping sides smooth but let the top have a little “Snookie” bump for a fun easy look, but still looking classy and sexy for that special person in your office. A chignon is easy and quick: you’ll need to go to your local beauty supply to pick up a chignon pillow, then all you do is wrap a ponytail over the pillow, pin and spray for a fun bun.

Make-Up

Now, that our hair is done, here are some quick holiday makeup tips that will complete your look without going overboard. Your holiday party isn’t the time to get crazy with your makeup. Make sure you’re always comfortable in what you’re wearing on your face, it will keep you confident for the night ahead. Add some sparkle to your look (not too much!) by putting on your regular lipstick then adding on some gold lip gloss to give it that extra sparkle for that special night. Dust some of the gold onto your cheeks (lightly) and even your breastbone, but ever so lightly so when the night light shines in the room, so will you.

Dress

Velvet clothing is always rich-looking during the holiday. You can always stick with the traditional black, but adding some jewel tones bring you up a notch to be noticed. Satin is always a nice holiday tradition, and you can make a statement without going over the top with a rich charcoal gray, sapphire blue or eggplant. It will make you look and feel ready for whatever the night brings. • Grace Monda & Coleen White CSI Hair Salon, 631-320-1554

H&M Conscious Party Collection, hm.com

When it comes to your holiday party, it’s a time when we are allowed to be free to have fun with our coworkers, but also remember it’s not a night to let it all hang out. Remember, you never know who will show up so behave, have fun but make sure you’re noticed for all the right reasons. Happy holidays, Grazia and Colleen of CSI Salon. 10

Not All Cosmetic Products Are Safe As a wife and mother of two daughters, who also deals with a husband who suffers from severe allergies, I am forced to read labels and look at ingredients. I was astonished at what I learned. Many everyday products we use on our skin contain a variety of harmful ingredients such as formaldehyde, many of which are disguised by their technical names. Our skin is our biggest organism, and what we put on it goes directly into our blood stream. I was amazed to find out that many shampoos and soaps that our families use everyday also contain saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol and animal by products. We watch what we eat but do not watch what we use on our skin and hair every day. I became concerned and I began looking for products which are safer. That is when Arbonne came into my life. Arbonne products are pure, safe and beneficial since they do not contain harmful ingredients. Since using the ABC baby care line on my youngest daughter, who is seven years old, her eczema has been controlled. Effective Ways To Delay The Aging Process The skin is the largest organ of the body with the purpose of protecting us from outside elements such as the sun’s UV rays and pollutants, also known as free radicals. With such exposure, our skin loses its natural moisture, and collagen, thus appearing dry and dull, with fine lines and wrinkles adding to the appearance of aging. Beautiful skin should be moist, firm and have a healthy glow. As we age it becomes more and more difficult to maintain that youthful, beautiful skin, yet there is a simple routine we can follow to delay the aging process. Use a cleanser that will gently remove all makeup and debris both morning and night. Apply a Vitamin C & E serum to restore radiance and protect against the damage of free radicals. Use a moisturizer that replenishes the natural hydration and collagen which increases the firmness that has been lost through the ages. In order to get the best effect from any skin care, use according to directions and frequency indicated on the product. • Rosemary Serra, Skin Care Specialist, Everlastingbeautyskincare.com

beauty & fitness 5 Tips To Stay On Track

Set Specific Goals With Realistic Expectations Know what you want and have detailed goals in mind. Don’t just proclaim to “lose weight”. Make it specific. How much do you want to lose? What clothing size do you want to fit into? By what date? What waist size do you want? How many inches do you want to lose? I make sure that I write all my goals down in order to commit to them. Use a journal or a workout log, but record your goals and review them regularly. Keep in mind that these changes need to be realistic, as well. If you are a size 16, it’s unrealistic and self-defeating to tell yourself that you’ll fit into a size 4 in two months. It’s more probable that dropping one or two sizes is a realistic goal, with more sizes to lose as you keep on working on your goals.

Believe It Can Happen Make certain you truly believe that you can achieve the goals you set for yourself. See yourself achieving those goals. You must believe you can do it…and are worth it. I visualize every change I want to make to my appearance, my eating, and my workouts. I’ll look in the mirror and focus on the specific changes I want to make. In planning my workouts, I’ll run through the workout in my head on my way to the gym so the process is already ingrained in my psyche. I find that visualizing my plans makes it all the easier to follow through with them. Telling myself I can do it gives me a positive attitude and goes a long way in helping me make them a reality.

destination. Long-term fitness goals are just that…long term. Programs that offer “quick results in just 2 weeks” usually sacrifice quality for empty promises in order to get your money. Understand that your goals will take committed, small steps over time. Remind yourself your actions are cumulative; ask yourself, “will what I am about to do help me achieve my goals?” Make positive, consistent choices.

Commit To The Plan Then Go For It O.K…you’ve got your workout plan with your specific goals, you’ve been visualizing your success and you’re telling yourself you can do it. Now what? FOLLOW THROUGH. All the wishful thinking in the world is not going to make your goals happen. Here’s where you must take action and “just do it”. Realize that you don’t have to love exercise for it to work…but if you follow through with your well-devised plan it WILL work.

Accept Setbacks Then Regroup One skipped workout, one not-so-good meal, one too many office cookies are not going to destroy your fitness and health goals. I keep in mind that I slip up occasionally but I don’t beat myself up over it. Instead, I focused on what happened…did I skip exercise because I didn’t plan my day appropriately? Could I have scaled back the workout instead of missing one entirely? Did my eating go down the drain on a particular day because I didn’t pack my lunch like I had planned? Be realistic about your situation and then make changes accordingly.

Focus On The Process. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Concentrate on what you can do on a day by day basis and understand that it is all about the process rather than the 18

What Are Those Red Bumps? What are those little “Red Bumps”? They may be a genetic skin condition called Keratosis Pilaris. It is caused by a build up of dead skin cells in hair follicles. This causes patches of little red bumps, usually on the arms and legs. It is believed that 40% of the world’s population suffers with this condition. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this disease but there are some measures that can be taken to help contain and control the bumps. Gently scrub or loofah the skin with soap and water while showering. Keep the skin moisturized with moisturizer containing lactic acid. This may help to minimize the dry skin. Wear cotton clothing on areas with this condition. Mixed fabrics can exacerbate the bumps. I have suffered with Keratosis Pilaris on the back of my arms since childhood. Recently, I went to a new dermatologist who gave me a prescription for Azelex. To my amazement, it really helped clear the condition up for me. However, this is a chronic condition, and I will have to continue using the prescription when the Keratosis Pilaris flares up again. Be sure to see a doctor to confirm the diagnosis before you self treat. • Pat Chauvin, Laser Electrolysis Center, 631-271-7888

fitness & wellness Increase Your Strength Performance You already know that physical fitness is an essential element of a healthy lifestyle. You are probably also aware that as we age our muscles atrophy. What you might not know is that an elderly adult can build muscle tissue at approximately the same rate as a younger adult. Research has shown that both senior and younger adults can increase their strength performance by 50% to 60% when strength training over an eight week period. So by now you are probably wondering how to go about building all this muscle; the answer is resistance training. Yes, the best way to build strong muscle is through regular resistance training. Women of all ages can increase their muscle strength through a progressive program of strength exercise. This means, for instance, after a set of 12 biceps curls with 8 pound weights becomes easy, up your weights to 10 pounds and so on. You will be pleasantly surprised to see how much strength potential you actually have. Not only will your strength increase, but also so will your muscle size. Remember, muscle is denser than fat, so you will actually look smaller and tighter. Be aware that there is a lot more to strength training than picking up a pair of dumbbells. Proper technique and a planned regimen are essential. So next time to go to the gym, ask questions when you are in doubt. See if your gym professional can help you create a properly integrated strength-training program especially tailored for you. If you are consistent, I promise you some fabulous results will follow. Now go pump some iron! • Carol Burke, Power of One Health & Fitness, 631-757-6937

hiring a personal trainer Many of us overindulge during the holidays, and then wait to start an exercise program for New Year’s resolution. Why wait when you can get yourself ahead of the weight gain and start early on a healthy lifestyle. Hiring a personal trainer is the best possible option for quality exercise, correct form and motivation. Trainers are not without cost, but are a very good investment. Finding the right one will only make the value of a personal trainer everlasting. When hiring a trainer, read the testimonials of what others have to say about them and their results. It is a great idea to run though a trial session with a trainer before you purchase a bulk of sessions with them. Don’t forget about your nutrition; it will be helpful to find a trainer that is also educated in nutrition to help you achieve your weight and fitness goals. Train with someone that loves to train you, someone that loves his or her job and wants to see you succeed. Your goals are all about YOU. As a trainer, I love seeing my clients reach their goals and feel good about their lives. It is the most rewarding part of the job. • Lauren Geldmacher BodyDesign Fitness Studio, 631-423-0071

How To Choose The Best Orthodontist For your Family You are about to embark on an orthodontic journey – an exciting time for your family. Here are some key questions to ask that will help you select the orthodontist and practice that best fits your family: • Is the doctor a specialist in orthodontics with 2-3 years of specialized education beyond dental school? • Are there extra charges for emergency visits or repairs? • Are different payment options available? • Do clinicians and their team members attend continuing education classes and seminars frequently? • Are ‘space age’ wires used for improved comfort and performance? • Does the doctor use bonded brackets as much as possible, or spacers and old-school bands? • Does the doctor use proper mechanics that allow him/her to reduce the total number of appointments necessary to complete your treatment? • Are appointments easy to make? • Are you charged for cancelled appointments? • Dr. Inna Gellerman, Spectacular Smiles, 631-427-8444

Sedation For The Dental Phobic Are you afraid of the dentist? Are you procrastinating dental work that’s needed? Are you overwhelmed with thoughts of repeated dental visits? Do you have problems with gagging or getting numb? Rest assured that you are not alone. For some of the most fearful patients, dental needs are simply not taken care of, due to the extreme anxiety that going to the dentist provokes. Sedation dentistry may just be the answer for those whose fear has prevented them from getting the dental care that they require and deserve. There are those who counter with: “Yes, but I don’t like needles either!” Well, sedation in dentistry can be accomplished with a simple pill taken by mouth. Sound interesting? We in the dental field will be able to treat the estimated 40% of the population that wouldn’t otherwise seek routine dental care, due to their fear of dentistry. The technique is referred to as “Conscious Sedation”, wherein the patient is sedated enough to have their dental work done with no discomfort, fear or memory of the appointment afterwards. This technique is the safest, easiest and most effective route of administration

of sedatives for use in all phases of general dentistry. Unlike general anesthesia, the patient is not completely unconscious. While extremely “groggy,” they can still maintain some degree of communication with the dentist. They are, however, sedated enough to allow them to have the much needed dental care that they have been avoiding for years, and generally will not remember the events of the appointment afterwards. By utilizing a pill form of sedative, this procedure is extremely safe, and non-invasive. Do you usually have trouble getting numb? Conscious Sedation Dentistry can be the answer for you as well. The sedatives that are used will make the anesthetics much more effective --(yes, anesthesia is still needed, but you will neither care, nor remember!) Perhaps the best thing of all is that, by the following day, you are back to normal with a new smile, knowing that your dental phobia is a thing of the past. • Dr. Richard Rongo, Huntington Village Dental, 631-423-7022

the u-lift

Exclusive before and after results published in next month’s GEM Magazine LI! Check it out!

The newest, natural innovation in cosmetic enhancement “When patients come to my office hoping to look better I listen to their concerns: they often want to avoid surgery, they have no downtime, want results that work and last, they are concerned about foreign materials being used. It is difficult to find one thing that can satisfy all of these desires. The U-lift in the right patient can do just that.”...Dr. Scott Blyer Newts and salamanders can regenerate tails, legs and even eyes. Starfish can regenerate their entire body. Do we, as humans, possess the ability to repair our own wrinkles? It appears we may. You have heard of the “Vampire Facelift”, where your own blood is centrifuged and injected into your face to treat wrinkles and enhance volume. Dr. Blyer has his own ‘spin’ on this technique which yields magnificent results. At CAMEO Surgery, Dr. Blyer’s technique is called, “The Ulift” because the secret ingredient is you (u). What does it do? A small amount of blood is removed, similar to a blood test and prepared for treatment. From the sample, platelets and fibrin in plasma are removed and prepared for injection. The injections can be used to improve fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth, eyes, and forehead. It can also be add volume to the cheeks, jawline, or chin wherever it may be needed. Using state of the art painless infrared and radiofrequency technology, the growth factors within the platelets are activated and the magic begins. Where injected, they repair existing damage to skin and help grow new collagen; improving skin texture, coloring, and minimizing wrinkles. Within the platelets, alpha granules contain many growth factors that are responsible for regeneration and repair of collagen. It has been used by orthopedic surgeons and other specialists for years to heal better and quicker. By creating a super-concentrated syringe of them, and by awakening them to work in the designated area, the results have been outstanding. In people lacking volume, Dr. Blyer sometimes will add a filler with it to help assimilate new collagen growth in those tissues. How long before I see results? 24

gemmagazineli.com

You are getting your results from different avenues. There will be immediate results simply from injecting the substance under the skin. Over time the PRP (platelet rich plasma) does its magic and most will see a result at 3 weeks, older people may take up to 6 weeks. This is due to the new collagen formation from fibroblast stimulation. Lastly, from the infrared/ radiofrequency treatment, results can continue to improve over months from delayed collagen repair. How long does it last? Although there are not yet any long term studies, the results appear to last for over a year. There is no harm in repeating the treatment before that time. What is the downtime? Essentially none. You can have the procedure done and go to work the next day. Some people can have some bruising, but this can be covered with makeup. Are there any dangers associated with this technique? No, it is safe. The product is made from your own body and there is no chance of reactions or allergies. If a person has active cancer, it is not advisable to have this procedure. What are the advantages over other alternatives? The Ulift trumps fillers like Restylane®, Juvederm™, and Radiesse® because: -It comes from your own body (not foreign) -There is no chance of allergy -Results typically last longer than Restylane® -Better for superficial wrinkles-most fillers cannot be injected close to the skin surface without getting lumps and bumps -Will produce new collagen -It can be injected in thin eyelid skin without worry of discoloration or bumps which can be seen with Radiesse®, Restylane®, or Juvederm™ -Juvederm™ comes in 0.8 cc syringes, Resytlane ® in 1.0 cc syringes, and Radiesse® in 1.5 cc syringes, with the Ulift, from your own blood we can get 3-10 cc (up to 12 times the amount) Advantages of the Ulift compared to fat injections: -Can be done very comfortably without sedation -No ‘donor’ site discomfort (besides the blood draw area) -Advertisement

Minimally Invasive, Can Mean Minimal Results Elective surgery: those two words don’t even look right sitting next to each other. Few people want to have surgery; but for some to achieve their desired results, it may not be so elective. In this culture, we seek instant gratification and have created a need in the marketing arena for these noninvasive options. With the right patient, the right device can be effective. All too often we see doctors becoming salesmen, or even worse, non-trained medical personnel selling treatments without understanding the science behind the technology. This leads to treatments performed on the wrong candidates resulting in sub-par results, which can ruin the reputation of the device and the provider. There are a plethora of nonsurgical options to cosmetic enhancement; yet, the newest isn’t always the best and certainly, not the cheapest. Oftentimes, I find myself talking people out of procedures because their expectations may exceed the limitations of these procedures. “Under promise and over deliver” is the motto that I hope to project to my patients. Here are some words of wisdom in the arena of nonsurgical/noninvasive procedures:

• Noninvasive fat melting devices like Zeltiq and Zerona work, but only in the right situation and the results are limited. • Different skin tightening devices (and there are many) can also be effective in those with the right type of skin elasticity. • All laser hair removal devices are not made equal. • The limitations of fillers and Botox need to be understood before going forward with the treatment. You can only use injectable up to a point to get good results. At some point, we as patients have to decide how important our correction is to us. It may become time for surgery. These surgeries are typically safe provided you go to a reputable doctor in an accredited facility. Recovery times are not as long as they once were. A surge in technology along with administration of different healing modalities and new medications has contributed to this. Ultimately the decision is yours. There is only so much that pixie dust can do. In the right situation, for the right person, with the right expectations, good results can be achieved. • Dr. Scott Blyer, Cameo Surgery, 631-232-2626

health & wellness Are You Thyroid Deficient?

I went to a summer party and I couldn’t help but notice the mixed edema or puffiness in the face of one of my friends. I didn’t want to start party diagnostics so I decided to wait for a private moment at a later date. But later, she casually mentioned that her cholesterol was elevated and that she was always tired. She’s in her late 50s and overweight. In conversations, I overheard her telling the other ladies that her hair and skin were different than before she had her children. By observing and listening to her, I could see the clinical picture. She is hypothyroid. Traditionally, hypothyroidism is defined as “a condition in which the thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormone.” The thyroid gland is located in the front of the neck just below the voice box or larynx. The thyroid releases hormones that control metabolism. Interestingly, researchers are discovering new ways to look at thyroid malfunctions. Here are some of the physiological functions of the thyroid. Thyroid hormones increase the function of a large number of genes, increase cellular metabolic activity and stimulate carbohydrate and fat metabolism. Some of the effects of healthy thyroid function on the cardiovascular system include increased blood flow and cardiac output, increased heart rate, increased heart strength, normal arterial blood pressure, increased respiration, increased GI motility, healthy muscle tone and healthy libido. Thyroid symptoms are ubiquitous. The lack of thyroid hormones is correlated with increased concentrations of cholesterol and triglycerides in blood. Low thyroid has also been associated with fatty deposits in the liver, depression, low energy states and menstrual irregularities. Low thyroid hormones also mean a low metabolic rate. How can the deficiency of one hormone have so many different symptoms associated with it? I think it is because healthy thyroid function is 26

gemmagazineli.com

related to healthy mitochondrial function. Mitochondria are the cell’s power producers. They convert energy into forms that are usable by the cell. Healthy mitochondrial function means more energy for cells. When thyroid hormones are given to animals, trillions of mitochondria increase in size and number. Guyton’s Textbook of Medical Physiology 2000 edition states that “it seems almost to be an obvious deduction that the principal function of thyroxine (thyroid hormone) might be simply to increase the number and activity of mitochondria.” You can take thyroid medication but unless you have enough iron, magnesium, iodine/iodide and selenium, your hypothyroid symptoms may remain unchanged. Also, healthy adrenal glands are essential for healthy thyroid function. If adrenal function is over stimulated, it will shut down the thyroid as the body is trying to slow down the destructive fight or flight reaction. You may need adrenal support along with thyroid supplements. Atkins Wellness Solutions understands thyroid function and offers treatments that take a comprehensive and completely natural approach. Supplements can be taken safely and effectively that support healthy endocrine function and balance your metabolism naturally. I’ve seen many patients who come to me with symptoms of a thyroid deficiency, particularly difficulty losing weight. They’ve had their thyroid checked and the results came back normal. As you’ve seen here, it may take more than a test to uncover a thyroid deficiency. But don’t give up. Talk to us about thyroid function and how to increase your body’s metabolism. It’s time to get started so you can have more energy… lose weight and feel younger. • Dr. Stephen Atkins, PhD, HHP, Board Certified Holistic Practitioner Atkins Wellness Solutions, 631-470-2499

health & wellness Tis’ The Season To Be Healthy Although the holiday season brings us much joy, we find ourselves over eating and stressed out. This time of year can be a little bit hectic and we tend to forget about the importance of taking care of ourselves. Cleansing Concepts has compiled a quick tip list to help you before, during and after this special time of year. CLEANSE YOUR COLON - After the holidays is the perfect time to do a series of “Colenz Hydrotherapy” sessions. Just think about all of our indulgences, especially during this season. This procedure will leave you feeling light and energized. Other benefits include better digestion, weight loss, improving skin appearance, and overall health. SWEAT- After being completely stressed out with family gatherings and holiday shopping, its time to relax and sweat out your stress. Our skin is our largest organ and sweating is an essential part of detoxification. Sweating helps us by cleansing our lymphatic system and purifying the skin. To get the best sweat try an INFRARED SAUNA. In the infrared sauna, the body releases 17% more toxins than your typical sauna. Health benefits include lowering blood pressure, weight loss, deep relaxation and reducing muscle aches and pains. Eat ORGANIC- Consuming only the freshest organic produce will ensure the delivery of vitamins and minerals to the body. Pesticides and processed foods contribute to the toxic overload that we carry around in our bodies. HYDRATE your body with ALKALIZED WATER. Drinking at least half your body weight in ounces per day will keep every cell in your body oxygenated. The water should be purified and ALKALIZED for optimal hydration. Try purchasing an IONWAYS water alkalizer. Not only will you save money, but you will also reduce waste from purchasing bottled water. DRY SKIN BRUSHING- This simple technique helps to remove dead skin cells, improve circulation and improve the lymphatic system. Brushing daily leaves your skin glowing and your body energized. Do a JUICE FAST- Give your jaw and digestive system a break. Drinking freshly juiced organic fruits and vegetables (especially greens) helps to alkalize the body and replenish the body with vitamins and minerals. Doing this with colon cleansing brings optimal results. Try this for the New Year!! 28

Do an IONIC FOOT BATH- This procedure is a safe and gentle way to eliminate heavy metals, pesticides, and debris from past/present medications and electromagnetic frequency toxins from the body. The ionic foot bath helps to assist in reducing inflammation and stress. It also helps you think clearer and sleep better. DRINK DETOX CLAY- Calcium Bentonite Clay is truly one of natures’ best -kept secrets. Drinking just 2-4oz daily can help rid the body of toxins, cleanse the liver, rid the body of parasites, and boost your immune system. The clay also helps to reduce indigestion, nausea, acid reflux, diarrhea, and constipation. EXERCISE - MEDITATE- LAUGH- BREATH- Taking the time for physical activity and recreation is important for body mind and spirit. Keeping a positive mind will help ease the stress of the holidays. Make sure to laugh and enjoy this special time of year. Meditating and deep breathing, whether stuck in traffic or on a very long line at a store will help you to stay cool and calm. Don’t forget to wish others a happy holiday. And don’t forget to SMILE! These tips can be used all year round. Cleansing Concepts would like to wish you a happy healthy holiday, with lots of blessings for you and your family. • Vanessa Galati, Cleansing Concepts, 516-640-5322

Ban Perfectionism How many of you are looking for the perfect you? You look outside and yet what you are really searching for is trying to be perfect inside. You hold a perfectly formed flower in your hand as you marvel at its magnificence. You look at a tree with randomly placed branches stretching toward the sun. You accept the tree’s natural form, yet you are much more critical of your own human nature. I say, ban perfectionism! It leads to unrealistic standards for realistic living. Yes, athletes seek the perfect score, musicians practice to play exquisite sounds. Yet each person brings their unique rendering to every situation. You will know when your effort is “good enough” based on what you can do and who you are. Replace perfectionism with “unique-ism”. Let’s honor and revel in the uniqueness of who you are. Every person is unique, just as each flower, even of the same kind, is ever so slightly different. My journey has been to unravel who I am, as well as assisting others in their journey of self-discovery. Shine brilliantly as only you can, accepting yourself, warts and all. Revel in your “unique-ism”, and recognize the “unique-ism” in others---and enjoy your life. • OnFireAlyse Parise LCSW, Psychotherapist and Certified Business Coach alyseparise@poweroutcomes.com 631-689-6272

Snow Shoveling:

A Pain In The Back As the winter starts to set in, we can all remember back to last year’s record-breaking cold, snowy weather. Don’t let this year’s winter be a pain in your back! Each year, there are more and more shovelingrelated neck and back injuries. This especially occurs in people who are not accustomed to this high impact type of physical activity during the rest of the year. There are a few important key points to remember when headed out to the driveway. 1. Be sure to warm up the muscles and joints prior to any activity. This includes gentle stretches for at least ten minutes to the arms, back, neck and legs. 2. Make sure you use a lightweight ergonomic shovel (or better yet, a snow-blower!)

The Benefits Of Apple Cider Vinegar No doubt you have apple cider vinegar in your kitchen and have probably used it to marinade meat, chicken, and fish. Many of the salad dressings that you make contain apple cider vinegar, but did you know the health benefits of apple cider vinegar? It’s not the clear vinegar that contains the health benefits, but the organic and unfiltered vinegar that has sediment settled in the bottom of the bottle and a brownish tinge to it. This is called Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) with the Mother. The vinegar contains a host of vitamins, beta-carotene, pectin (fiber) and vital minerals such as potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorous, chlorine, sulfur, iron and fluorine. ACV contains malic acid, which is very helpful in fighting fungal and bacterial infections. This acid dissolves uric acid deposits that form around joints, helping relieve joint and muscle pains. This dissolved uric acid is gradually eliminated from the body. It is claimed that apple cider vinegar is helpful in aliments such as constipation, headaches, arthritis, weak bones, indigestion, high cholesterol, diarrhea, eczema, sore eyes, chronic fatigue, mild food poisoning, hair loss, high blood pressure, obesity, along with a host of many other ailments. It has been said that the best time to drink the ACV is first thing in the morning. Mix two tablespoons of ACV in a glass of water and drink it. Many call apple cider vinegar the “wonder drug” and it is available at your local health food stores. • Colleen Simon, Health Hutt, 631-615-2179 30

3. Avoid twisting to remove the snow. It’s a lot less of a strain on your body to push the snow as opposed to throwing it. 4. Keep your knees bent and tighten your abdominal muscles while pushing/lifting the snow. Use your core muscles, arms and legs instead of your back to do the work. 5. Take frequent breaks if you feel tired or out of breath. Don’t push yourself beyond your own limits. Being in good physical condition and following these basic rules of shoveling, can protect you from neck pain, back pain and repetitive stress disc injuries. If you would like to learn more about how to keep your spine and muscles healthy in preparation for the winter months, we are offering a *FREE Consultation & evaluation + 15 minute massage for anyone who mentions this December GEM Magazine article. • Dr. Debbie Genin, Balance Chiropractic & Wellness Center, 631-470-9670

Executive Director, Northeast Region

Canine Companions For Independence More Than a Best Friend For some, dogs are more than a “best friend.” They’re a lifeline. Bayport, NY’s Virginia Karrass knows this well. She struggles with limited hand coordination from a spinal cord injury, which makes tasks like retrieving a dropped book or pulling on a sweater next to impossible. When she’s alone in the house it’s isolating, even Virginia Karrass and Sheeler dangerous. And then came Sheeler, an assistance dog from Canine Companions for Independence that has helped Virginia reclaim her life. “Sheeler has given me new independence,” she said. She’s not alone. A non-profit organization, CCI has been providing thousands of children and adults with disabilities with highly trained service dogs, for free, since 1975. CCI boasts five regional training facilities across the nation. Three years ago CCI moved its northeast training center to the Miller Family Campus in Medford, NY. It’s an 11-acre, 39,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility with 35 kennels, exercise yards, a wellness clinic, grooming facility, play yards for puppies and more. Remarkably, the Miller Campus is CCI’s hub for 13 states. “CCI is meaningful in so many ways. The people we serve are grateful to have this best buddy by their side, a friend who is always there, at the ready to help,” said Debra Dougherty, executive director for the Northeast Region. Debra oversees the Campus and the hundreds of volunteers who make these miracles happen.

A Mission of Love Debra takes what they do at CCI personally. “We get to know all the people that we serve: the volunteers, our clients, everyone,” she 34

said. “We work side-by-side with our clients for months training their companions to perform the specific tasks they need. We house the dogs for over a year training them, our puppy raisers are part of our family, the in-house volunteers are the lifeblood of CCI.” “This is important work we’re doing. For many clients receiving an assistance dog is a life-changing event. For someone who is homebound, or alone, or just feeling alone, this service can make all the difference.”

A Dog’s (Great) Life CCI dogs are Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers and crosses of the two. They’re bred for a stable, loving temperament. As young pups they live with “puppy raisers,” volunteers who provide a safe home and healthy diet, socialize them and give them lots of love. They also take the puppies (all under the age of one) to CCI-approved obedience classes. After a year and a half, puppy raisers hand over the leash to their dog’s new companions at Graduation. It’s a bittersweet ceremony, but exceptionally fulfilling to puppy raisers who can meet the child or adult who will receive so much from their new friend. Dogs then undergo six months of intensive training. Afterward, CCI clients move in to the Miller Family Campus for four weeks of paired training with their assistance dog. Dogs learn the specific skills needed by their owners; owners in turn learn how to care for their dog.

GM GEM MAGAZINE LONG ISLAND

Bridget Gum The Campus was designed for this: clients stay on-site in dormitories, for free, an important benefit for those traveling far distances to receive a CCI dog. Travel can be difficult for CCI clients; many would not be able to participate in this process without on-site housing.

Help CCI Make a Difference! The waiting list for a CCI dog is nearly two-years’ long. To shorten the wait CCI needs puppy raisers. “It’s one of the most selfless things you can do, raising an assistance dog and then giving it up to someone in need,” said Debra. “It’s for a higher cause. Once people see the gratitude of clients at graduation, any concerns of ‘will I really be able to give the dog up?’ melt away.” Funding is also high on Debra’s priority list. Each placement costs $45,000. As a non-profit, CCI relies on donations and grants to ensure that their services remain free. Anyone can pitch in with even a small donation: the Medford Campus has a wish list online for items such as dog toys, blankets and even dog treats. “CCI is one of those unique places where people’s lives are transformed,” she said. “There’s no place I’d rather be.” To get involved please call 800-572-BARK, www.cci.org. • Hillary Call, Call Communications, 917-414-9262

Little Shelter

Animal Adoption Center One of Long Island’s oldest no-kill shelters, is dedicated to saving all companion animals whose lives are in jeopardy. Through rescue from kill facilities, rehabilitation of sick and un-socialized pets, and a 100% spay/neuter program, Little Shelter hopes to end pet overpopulation and place all dogs and cats in loving homes. Located in Huntington, NY. Little Shelter is also a part of the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC Animals. Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center is a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter nestled on six wooded acres in Huntington, Long Island. Included on the grounds is Sheltervale Pet Cemetery, which has been the final resting place for companion animals for more than 80 years. Suffolk County’s oldest humane organization, Little Shelter has been dedicated to saving abandoned dogs and cats and placing them into loving homes since 1927. Age, physical condition, and socialization issues are never criteria for rescuing a dog or cat whose life is in jeopardy. Most of our companion animals have been saved from kill shelters on Long Island, in New York City, and in several southern states. As a member of the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, Little Shelter is regularly called upon by the city’s municipal shelters to take their dogs and cats in need of rehabilitation. All Little Shelter pets receive the highest quality medical care and are spayed /neutered before adoption. Every potential adopter is interviewed and thoroughly screened to ensure the best quality homes. pet care

Research shows that women and pets have something in common when it comes to surviving the chilly time of year – weight gain. Snow, ice, rain and freezing temperatures often mean that long walks with Fido have turned into short bathroom breaks, and more time is spent snuggling by the fire and enjoying holiday feasts. This year you can make winter weight gain for you and your pet a thing of the past. As well as watching the food intake for both yourself and your four-legged friend, why not try some great outdoor winter activities that will keep those calories burning. Put on your jacket, hat, boots and mittens and explore new outdoor fun with your dog, including snowshoeing and tracking, or indoor activities that encourage agility, like hide and seek, or simply running up and down stairs. Don’t let the winter blues spoil your figure. With some creativity and determination you’ll both be ready to step into Spring with confidence. Women and holiday decorating…say no more! What Long Island woman doesn’t like to decorate her home for the season? While adorning your home with joyful trinkets can add a touch of sparkle to your surroundings, did you know that some decorations could pose potential health risks to your pet? Common holiday plants such as poinsettias and holly often have leaves and berries that can be toxic to your furry friend if ingested. Be sure to place these plants well out of reach of your dog or cat, or better still, forgo the real thing for their fake counterpart and you’ll be sure to avoid an unnecessary trip to the ‘animal ER’! • Jodi Record Little Shelter Animal Rescue, 631-368-8770 36

Feed your Pet Like You Feed Yourself – Not Exactly Following watching the movie Julie and Julia, I decided to cook and report on pet food recipes. Inspired by the history of how Halo, Purely for Pets homemade food evolved, my goal was to duplicate the original “Spot’s Stew”, a wholesome all natural recipe created for pets in 1986. All ingredients that I easily found in my kitchen or local grocery store closely mirrored the “stew” I often prepared for my family. Chicken liver and giblets boosted the pet version without the conventional seasonings like salt and pepper. Although “Spot’s Stew” originated as a homemade diet, it has evolved to a premium commercially prepared complete and balanced food. It is still made with high quality whole food ingredients, but includes added essential fatty acids and the important vitamins and minerals pets require. My cooking project, although fun and appreciated by my dogs, highlights the fact that how we feed our beloved pets must meet their specific dietary needs, which are different from our own. Dogs and cats require specific amino acids from proteins, essential fatty acids, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and most important, water. How do we achieve this balance? Pet parents need to understand what nutrients benefit their pets and how much are required for optimal health. Be diligent and read labels to look for real quality protein, nourishing whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Look for food with wholesome, easy to understand ingredients. Animal protein should be in the top of ingredients listed. Pet food quality can differ and consumers should know what is good in pet food and what should be avoided, like by-products, artificial preservatives, colors and flavors. Check with your veterinarian, fellow pet owners or seek out nutritional information from respected publications and websites. Pet owners can find an array of commercial food choices ranging from raw diets, freezedried, canned, or dry formulas. Some pet parents select premium natural diets found in specialty and large pet stores or a whole-foods market. If you choose to feed Fido or kitty homemade meals, be sure that missing nutrients are supplemented. When selecting a diet for your pet, remember that diet influences health and our pets have specific nutritional needs. Look to provide complete and balanced food and when your pet empties the dish satisfied, healthy and happy, you have made a great choice. • Bettie Hamilton Director of Product Development Halo, Purely for Pets halopets.com

family life & relationships

Finding the Right Balance Why is it that strong, successful women have such a hard time finding love? In order to find the answer to the question, I think it is important to acknowledge the fact that both men and woman possess feminine and masculine energies. Please understand this is not be confused with male and female social gender roles. For example, feminine energy consists of the ability to nurture, to be intuitive and sensitive, while masculine energy consists of independent thinking, assertive action, and the ability to be decisive. For decades men have been raised to possess more masculine energy, as they were also brought up to believe that they needed to be materially successful in order to provide for their family. It appears that men who possess more masculine energy are usually drawn to women who possess more feminine energy, because subconsciously, they are seeking balance. Most strong successful women tend to have more masculine energy than feminine energy. Having masculine energy can help you become successful in your endeavors; however, when it comes to relationships, it can get in the way. It is important to find and express the right balance between masculine and feminine energies that feels authentic to you. It is possible for women to be intuitive and nurturing (feminine energy), as well as assertive and decisive (masculine energy). Always be true to yourself and your inner harmony will balance you. • Jodi Pesca, CPC Living Authentic, 516-848-2524

Beat the Holiday Blues The holidays are a happy time – or are they? For many, this season fills us with not-so-cheerful thoughts. There’s an expectation that we must be jolly. If you’re depressed, lonely or just don’t like the holidays, these feelings are magnified because we hold ourselves to this high standard. “That’s not realistic,” said Theresa Buhse, associate director, Long Island Crisis Center. “It’s OK to feel however you’re feeling.” Beat the holiday blues with these effective strategies: • Take a 15-minute “Time Out” to focus on your needs. Go for a walk, listen to music, get some “you time.” • Give back. The holidays can seem isolating. Volunteer or help a neighbor and you’ll see how needed you really are! • Avoid “button pushers” with friends and family. Rehearse (polite) answers when Aunt Jenna brings up that hot topic you’re dreading. Being prepared will make you feel more in control. • Do Some Self-Talk. No one’s looking for perfection, so let yourself know (“It’s OK if dinner’s a little late”). • Call LICC hotlines 516-679-1111. We’re here 24/7 for support. Remember, the holidays will pass! A New Year is around the corner, and with it a return to normal and hope for a joyous 2012! • Hillary Call, LICC Volunteer december 2011

YMCA William Floyd Program The YMCA William Floyd Project offers services FREE to the public to help aid in the development of children and adolescents. These services and programs include: individual or group counseling, parent education, anger management and youth clubs, like youth and government. All of these services are developed to help improve the community of the William Floyd District in educating, supporting and empowering the youth, as well as enhancing family functioning. The YMCA William Floyd Project is located at the Mastic Recreation Center at 15 Herkimer Street in Mastic, NY. We offer: • Individual counseling--available free of charge to youth between the ages of 5-21 and their families up to sixteen weeks by appointment. • Mastic Teen Leaders Club for youth 12-21 years of age and a Tween Club for youth 9-11 years old. Both clubs meet on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 -8 PM. The goal of these self-directed clubs are to learn leadership skills and do community service. • Job readiness skills are available to individuals who are at least 12 years old, including an assessment of skills, training such as resume writing, interviewing and hands -on experience in general office 38

duties. • Educational programs include a parent education series, which is based on The Systemic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) and an anger management program. Both programs are six-sessions and successful participants are given a completion certificate that is acceptable at family court. • The Youth and Government Club is available to any student who attends the William Floyd High School. It is the only such club in Long Island. The club meets during the school year, at least once a week for 2 hours. The students learn how government works by voting students to various roles such as governor, legislators, senators, justices, lobbyists, attorneys or press. They research and write bills to see how government works. This culminates in a weekend long conference to Albany where they meet up with other participating clubs in New York State. • The YMCA William Floyd Project collaborates with many agencies in the community that also aid in rebuilding our communities like Family Service League Parent to Parent Program and the Mastic-Shirley-Moriches Library which offers many programs to our youth clubs such as a monthly book club and illustrator’s club. • Allison Meiselbach, MSW, YMCA Family Services

Parenting is one of life’s most amazing experiences and, at the same time, one of life’s most difficult challenges. Raising a physically, emotionally, and psychologically healthy and well-adjusted child will challenge you and require you to have flexibility in your approach to parenting. One of the most important parenting skills requires you to understand that your child is not his or her behavior. Children are not born “good” or “bad”; these are merely descriptors of behaviors. For example, if you were to say, “Thank you for being such a good boy today” or “No, you cannot have ice cream because you were a bad girl today”, you are suggesting to the child that he/she is “good or bad.” In these instances, it is extremely important to separate the child from his/her behavior by communicating in a clear and concise manner. For instance, “Thank you for cleaning up your toys and getting ready for dinner.” Over time, your child begins to internalize these statements and they become beliefs about himself/herself. If a child thinks he is bad, he will act bad, and vice versa. Separating the child from the behavior will bolster self worth by acknowledging that the child is inherently good despite how he/she behaves. • Dr. Laura Ness, Psychologist , PsyD 631-412-1339

Optimizing Your Students Success In The Classroom Success starts with a well-balanced breakfast, followed by healthy snacks such as fruit or nuts, and plenty of protein rich foods. (Especially for teens!) Nutrition is key to concentration! Without concentration, students tend to become distracted more easily and even lethargic. Study time should be in a quiet, well-lit place that is free from distractions. Monitor homework and studying to be sure that your student is successful. Discourage last minute work at the breakfast table the day the work is due. Ask to see tests, both good and bad, and formulate a plan for misunderstood work to be reviewed. Do NOT let this work slide!! It will be seen and needed at a later point in time – possibly the next unit. Contact your student’s teacher when needed and remember that the teacher only knows what’s happening in the classroom. Be sure to let the teacher know of any problems that may adversely affect your student’s performance. Call the teacher when there is positive news! Remember, education has become a three-part responsibility shared by the teacher, student and the parent. Everyone needs to do his or her part on the pathway to success. • Bruce and Krista Beasley, Above Grade Level, 631-804-4508

How To Get The Kitchen Of Your Dreams Most people spend a majority of their time in the kitchen, but when asked, eighty percent are unhappy with some aspect of their kitchen design; either the layout doesn’t flow or the cabinets and appliances are outdated. Most new homebuyers never get around to getting that “kitchen of their dreams”. Whether it’s financial or just the thought of the construction that puts them off, what they need is an attentive contractor that can help design and plan a custom look to fit any budget. The abundance of colors and materials available in kitchen design is off the charts. Granite, laminate, Corian or any other composite top can be made for any budget and style. These countertops aren’t the lime green Formica of yesteryear! In short, with the right contractor and good planning, the “kitchen of your dreams” could be designed within your budget and is only a phone call away. It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year... To Sell Your Home Yes, that’s right and when I do decide to sell my house in the future, I will put it on the market when the pool is closed, the landscape is dreary and I’m getting ready for the holidays. Crazy you may say, but the real estate market is dictated by supply and demand and not by pretty flowers blooming and green grass. Many sellers actually take their homes off the market for the holidays. Big mistake! In the Cold Spring Harbor school district, last December 2010 there were only 90 homes total on the market. Compared to July which had the most amount of inventory with 143 houses. Huntington SD #3, had 242 inventory last December, compared to 313 listed homes in August 2011. Less supply means more demand which means more motivated buyers! December is also a time of year when business professionals are looking into places to relocate. Another benefit to selling now is you will have less “lookers” and more real buyers. Year after year, my busiest season with buyers is in the Fall - Winter. Motivated buyers don’t care if it’s a holiday, if the roads are icy, if there is a snow storm. They are ready, willing, able and are on a mission! So, if you’re thinking of selling...don’t wait till the “Spring Market” when everyone else will be listing their house. Be the highlight of your

neighborhood. Add subtle hints of the season, such as a festive tree, tasteful exterior lights, and a front door wreath, just save the giant inflatable snowmen for next year. From my home to yours......Warm wishes for a wonderful Holiday season, good health, happiness and prosperity in the the New Year! • Elena D’Agostino, Licensed Associate Broker Certified Buyers Representative, Signature Premier Properties

for the home Astrology December Uranus in Aries goes direct December 10th at 0°. It rules the eleventh house, which is ruled by Aquarius. Uranus represents our behavior, especially in terms of freedom and independence. It can be rebellious. It expresses our originality, uniqueness and our friends and groups. Uranus is one of our outer planets and it stays in the same sign for seven years. It is now in the sign of impulsive Aries, so be aware that you may need to step back and consider others and seek cooperation with them. Aries is the original go-getter and seeks freedom and independence. Uranus going direct will now move these energies forward past the point where they were in mid-March when it went retrograde. Look to the house that Uranus is in transit in your chart to see in what areas these energies are operating for you. SAGITTARIUS Your mind should be clearer than usual with Mercury conjuncting your sun. This enables you to express your purpose clearly. Don’t lose sight that others need to communicate also. Be prepared if the volume of phone calls, letters and conversations with people increase. All communication is improved now and you may be the one to initiate it. • Maryann Dellinger, Astrological, Metaphysical & Psychic Insight, 631-462-1212

Preserve Your Memories In A Scrapbook If the purpose of your scrapbook is to last for generations to come, you should be sure that you are buying items that state they are photo safe, archival or acid & lignin free. You can usually be sure that your paper is scrapbook safe if you buy from a scrapbooking store. This also goes for adhesives and pens. Although it is not recommended to use embellishments that are not ‘photo safe’ you can buffer the item onto photo safe paper and make sure it doesn’t touch the photo. If you scrapbook just for the craft, then use your own judgment, but be aware that newspaper is not photo or scrapbook safe. Newspaper will yellow and become brittle over a short time unless it is treated. There are products out that will allow you to spray newspaper and other papers to make them archival. These sprays neutralize the acids and add a buffer that will protect the items you spray. If you have a newspaper article you want to scrap, consider spraying it or scan it onto acid free paper and then scrap it. Happy Scrapping! • Diana Gaizo, Not Just Scrap, 631-580-1118

Tables For The Holidays Make your dining room table something beautiful with a tabletop creation of your own for your family and friends to enjoy for the holiday. White candles surrounded by evergreens give your table the perfect holiday glow. Be creative by using your personal treasures in a whole new way. Kim’s Holiday Decorating Secrets Christmas For a classic look, if you are using fresh greenery, boughs of Scottish pine are always a great choice. The needles are long and the green is vibrant. Throw in a few pinecones, clear glass hurricanes with ivory candles, and surround with glass Christmas balls. Simple, but dramatic is the key. Modernize the look by subbing eglomise (antiqued mirror) candlesticks, colored candles, votives and silver balls. Add another brightly colored ball that coordinates within the color theme of the room for a “pop.” Additionally, try using tall glass vases as a home for some metallic Christmas balls. For apartment dwellers, tabletop trees are fun and easy. A petite tree atop a side table embellished with ornaments in a theme is perfect. Then, just when you think it’s done, go back and add more. In this case, more IS more. Make it a showstopper!

Hanukkah Candles, candles, candles. Votives are inexpensive and effective. Buy a bag of tea lights to last you throughout the holiday season. Make sure you add a few drops of water to the glass container before inserting any votives or tea lights. Go the extra mile with silver embellishments to add that “bling” to the room. Cr ystal, cr ystal, cr ystal. Nothing enhances a holiday table more than cut crystal. Pull out all your rarely used wedding crystal and use it all on the table. The candlelight reflecting off the cut crystal will add drama and elegance to any holiday setting. It’s all about creating an environment to make memories that will last a lifetime. automotive Tips For Long-Distance Winter Trips • Watch weather reports prior to a long-distance drive or before driving in isolated areas. Delay trips when especially bad weather is expected. If you must leave, let others know your route, destination and estimated time of arrival. • Always make sure your vehicle is in peak operating condition by having it inspected by a AAA Approved Auto Repair facility. • Keep at least half a tank of gasoline in your vehicle at all times. • Pack a cellular telephone with your local AAA’s telephone number, plus blankets, gloves, hats, food, water and any needed medication in your vehicle. • If you become snow-bound, stay with your vehicle. It provides temporary shelter and makes it easier for rescuers to locate you. Don’t try to walk in a severe storm. It’s easy to lose sight of your vehicle in blowing snow and become lost. • Don’t over exert yourself if you try to push or dig your vehicle out of the snow. • Tie a brightly colored cloth to the antenna or place a cloth at the top of a rolled up window to signal distress. At night, keep the dome light

on if possible. It only uses a small amount of electricity and will make it easier for rescuers to find you. • Make sure the exhaust pipe isn’t clogged with snow, ice or mud. A blocked exhaust could cause deadly carbon monoxide gas to leak into the passenger compartment with the engine running. Use whatever is available to insulate your body from the cold. This could include floor mats, newspapers or paper maps. • If possible run the engine and heater just long enough to remove the chill and to conserve gasoline. • http://www.aaaexchange.com

inspiration & motivation The Gift Of You

Your Personal Power We all know it is very competitive in the business world today. Do you ever wonder why you are passed over at promotion time? You may be a born leader, but what makes a leader is your propensity to generate the attributes that gain trust. These attributes define your Personal Power and include the ability to share knowledge, encourage growth and selfesteem by showing regard for others, and your ability to influence others by sharing your inner self. To get the next promotion you may need to increase your Personal Power. Let’s take a look at the components of Personal Power: Innate; the talent and characteristics you were born with…and Developed, what you build over a lifetime of learning. Your Personal Power lies in knowing who you are as an individual. We identify ourselves by looking at several characteristics and defining them: What is your personality? What are your attributes, qualities? What differentiates you makes you distinctive? How do you offer superior value? Next, we define Personal Power in terms of Expertise in relationship to our level of skill, knowledge and access to knowledge, Effort: focused and goal oriented and viewed as committed and dedicated, Personal Attraction: physical appearance, likeability, unconditional positive regard for others, and lastly, Relevance to the overall vision, mission, goals of the company or organization. Enabling the Power Within…Your Personal Power is the key to your success. If you don’t believe me…ask yourself…how did Madonna become famous; she didn’t go to any finishing school I know of. How did a movie star become President of the United States? How did a wallpaper hanger become the leader of a country? How did our Forefathers’ gain the respect and confidence of their constituency? Like it or not we’re in the height of the holiday season. The parking lots are filled with cars and people scurrying around hoping to find a spot close to the mall entrance. Lines are long; patience is short. We are all looking for that perfect gift for someone special. Does this holdiay rushing around work for you? Not really? Then stop and let me show you how to do it differently. First, come back into your house, and put away your wallet. Next, make yourself something delicious to drink—coffee, tea or hot chocolate, sit down, and take a breath. It may be the first real one you’ve taken all day. Now, on a piece of notepaper or a card write, “My special gift to you this year is –The gift of me!” I’m giving you my most precious gifts—my love and my time. To a friend you can write, “Let’s have a movie night.” You can suggest that they pick the movie while you supply popcorn, soda and a favorite candy. Children are easy! Spend time at a park. Too cold? No problem! Help them create their own storybook. They tell you the story; you write it and they get to illustrate it. Have them draw and color pictures for each page. Supply them with beads, sparkles, fancy string and anything else to create their cover. Remind them that, “An author always signs his or her book.” Teenagers are mall creatures. Give them a “free ride to the mall pass’, and let them bring friends along. You bet they will love you for this. Men in your life? S-I-m-p-l-e. The way to their heart is through their stomach. Warm, gooey brownies, chocolate chip cookies or some other favorite desert coupled with an offer to remind them of their wife’s birthday, anniversary. Have a mixed group? Plan a pizza party at your home where everyone gets to make his or her own pizza. If you don’t know how to make pizza dough, go to a bakery or local pizzeria and buy it. A glass of sangria and Dean Martin singing, “That’s Amore” will create an unforgettable evening. Be creative, think out of the box. The gift of you is the most precious gift of all. Share it and watch their faces light up and watch your charge bills go down. Happy Holidays! • Jean Summit-Riker Hypnotist & Tranquility Based Life Coach, 631-289-1371

business & finance Importance Of Homeowners Insurance A house or condo purchase is one of the biggest purchases you will make. If you have a mortgage on that property, the bank will insist that you have insurance to protect that purchase. Homeowner and condo insurance protects the dwelling and contents in the event of covered physical damage loss and and also protects you with liability coverage in the event someone is injured. What about those who rent a home or apartment? Most people believe their contents will be covered under their landlord’s policy. This is not true. Renters need coverage to protect their belongings against fire, theft, smoke, water damage and liability claims-- if a visitor is injured in your home. If your apartment should become uninhabitable due to a covered loss, it also pays for your living expenses if you are forced to leave your apartment. Don’t get caught unprotected, give your agent a call for a review of your coverages. • Michele Martin, Allstate, 631-261-4200

The Best Lesson My Mother Taught Me Last month I talked about how my mother inspired me to be an independent woman. This month I’d like to continue that idea and how it can relate to your business life. In addition to “never being financially dependent upon a man” my mother also taught me the importance of a budget. My first exposure to a budget was when I was sixteen and had my first job (making $4.00 an hour… Ha!). My mother explained that I needed to take the amount of all my bills each month and divide it by four. This way I would be able to know how much each week I needed to put aside from my paycheck to cover my bills. The great part was when receiving a weekly paycheck, a few times a year there would be a five-week month and then it would be like getting a bonus. I’d have extra money that month to either pay down a larger bill or get something extra for myself, usually shoes! Think that my mom’s lesson is too simple for a business? Well, it isn’t! The amounts are larger and the number of bills, payroll and taxes are more involved, but the theory remains the same. Look at your business’ bills. You probably have rent, insurance, vehicle payments, payroll and other expenses. Add up all the recurring bills and your monthly average payroll and then divide by four! You will have a baseline of how much cash you need to receive from your customers each week. The total of all the expenses will also be your breakeven point. This is the point where you receive the same amount of money as you spend. Easy! Knowing how much cash you need on a weekly basis will help you gauge how well you are doing. Next month… let’s talk profits! Why? Because profits are what grow the company, not sales. • Stacy Luft, CF Grow Inc., 631-894-4234 50

Managing Your On-Line Reputation I am always fascinated by the imagination displayed by entrepreneurs in identifying opportunities for providing innovative goods and services. In today’s world, one’s online reputation is a valuable commodity that can be damaged by the viral dissemination of inaccurate or damaging information. Although there are legal remedies against defamation, they are comparatively clunky and inefficient. Therefore, it is more effective to take a proactive approach to managing one’s online reputation by creating an accurate and positive first impression through one’s website, blog, social networking profiles, podcasts, webinars and the other on-line presences that one can control. Other ways to manage your on-line reputation would be by affiliating with positively viewed organizations and by contributing in a constructive way to on-line discussions. For a firm with an active online presence, it may be more efficient to outsource responsibility for managing its online reputation to a company that specializes in such services. Firmly believe in taking advantage of “comparative advantages” and outsourcing peripheral functions to people or companies that can perform them more efficiently and effectively. Often, entrepreneurs do not appreciate the opportunity costs of spending a lot of time performing such peripheral functions rather than focusing on their core business. Even when a function is outsourced though, the entrepreneur must contribute sufficient time, information and judgment to make the outsourcing arrangement a success. • Lisa Renee Pomerantz Attorney at Law, 631-244-1482

Plan Your Financial Future Before Reflecting On Your Past A good way to reflect on the past year is to review your budget. Better yet, have someone go over it with you; a second pair of eyes can see twice as much! Here are a couple of situations I came across when reviewing budgets: A widow, who is also a senior citizen, was paying out too much money for prescriptions. She explained how she fell into the dreaded Medicare donut hole. Knowing what her income is, I knew she would qualify for the EPIC drug plan offered in New York State. In a three month, period she saved over $4,000. In another situation, a couple had accumulated credit card debt of approximately $30,000 at very high interest rates. The woman was laid off for over a year, but admittedly, they continued to spend as if they were a two-income family. They were making the minimum payments totaling $1200 a month. Needless to say, they were not making a dent to reduce the balance. I told them about a debt relief service that would reduce the interest rate on all the cards. Now they pay $800 a month and will have the entire balance paid off in 60 months. They are accumulating the $400 difference to create an emergency fund. They have since adjusted their lifestyle and even though the woman has returned to work, they have vowed not to go back to their former spending habits.

In both of these situations, reflecting back made looking ahead much more promising. I wish you Good Health, Wealth & Time to enjoy it in the New Year. • Joan Bubaris, CFPŽ, Design Capital Planning Group, 631-830-6156

food & nutrition NEW YEAR, NEW YOU Get started on your New Year New You plan now…. Don’t let yourself and your diet fall into a downhill spiral relying on your New Year’s resolution to be the solution. Create your good habits---it takes twenty-one to days change old habits into new ones---- so by January first you will have no problem implementing them into full force!

Sleep-

It’s important that you get your 7-8 hours of sleep every night. Fewer hours will lead to a release of hormones that make you feel hungry. People who lack the zzz’s are more likely to be overweight.

Feel Better, Listen To Your Body Is it possible to lose weight, have more energy and never get sick? Would you like to get rid of aches and pains, constipation, fatigue, allergies or insomnia? Pain, fatigue and low energy are signs that your body is trying to communicate with you. If you want to feel better or improve your health, you better listen to your body, as it is probably asking for more nutrition. Many chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and all kinds of degenerative diseases are associated with malnourishment. Obesity and the inability to lose weight are created because the body is depleted of nutrition and cannot get rid of toxins and waste that the body generates. These are the issues that a certified nutritionist deals with to help people recover from their imbalance. The first step to wellness is to complete a health survey with a medical history, a family health history and a listing of your medications and daily food intake. The certified nutritionist will ask you about your health concerns and measure your BMI, percentage body fat, ideal body weight, acid /alkaline balance. The next step is to evaluate your problems and explain how science will help your body heal logically. Most often, lifestyle change, eating habit revisions and supplements will be recommended to replenish any nutritional deficiency. Nutritional therapy takes time. There are many other factors involved, including relationship issues, stress levels and physical activity. That is why I designed a 10week nutrition program called, “Healthy Weight For Life” to help people lose weight, improve health and reduce the dependency on drugs. I have been teaching this weekly program for the past thirteen years. My book, “Healthy Eating Wholesome Living” shows the outcome from this program. • Yu-Shiaw Chen, Ph.D., Certified Nutritionist, 631-751-4267, linutrition.com

Always A Holiday Favorite: Almond Biscotti This “gem” of a cookie recipe makes everyone happy anytime, but it is a wonderful holiday treat to make for your family and to take to friends for that special sweet gift. They will love you for it! 4 -cups flour 4 -tsp. baking powder 1-cup sugar 1-cup vegetable oil 4 -tsp. vanilla 4 -tsp. almond extract 4 -eggs 4 -oz. crushed almonds Mix all dry ingredients together. Add 4 eggs and oil and extracts and mix well. Knead dough into a ball. Add crushed almonds and mix in. Make 4 balls and mold into flat loaves and place each on a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Remove from oven, let cool and slice. Place cookie slices back on a sheet pan and bake for 20 minutes more until golden brown and crunchy. Store in a cookie tin and take these sweet “gems” with you on holiday visits!

Chocolate actually stimulates the production of endorphins (the ‘feel good hormones’) and the release of serotonin (a natural anti-depressant), and has a jolt of caffeine (but not too much), to provide a burst of energy and a mood boost.Chocolate is made from plants, which means it contains many of the health benefits of dark vegetables. Dark chocolate is good for your heart. A small bar of it everyday can help keep your heart and cardiovascular system running well.

Taste the Chocolate Chocolate is a complex food with over 300 compounds and chemicals in each bite. To really enjoy and appreciate chocolate, take the time to taste it. Go Ahead! Butter Your Biscuit

10 Holiday Tips You Can Actually Live With 1. Spend time with people you like being with. Since that is not always possible, see tip #2. 2. Take a counting breath when you need to de-stress. Inhale to the count of 5. Exhale to the count of 5. Repeat as needed. 3. Be kind to yourself, and give yourself permission to completely enjoy what you eat. 4. Eat what you crave, on occasion. When you really want something and deny yourself the pleasure of having it, you will actually eat more by trying to compensate for what you wanted in the first place. 5. Practice mindful eating when it’s quiet and you can focus. Really taste the food; try to figure out the seasonings and ingredients in the dish. Honor the food and where it came from, who prepared it, and how it was prepared. Food should be a sensual and enjoyable experience. 6. If someone tries to serve you something you don’t want, or insists you take seconds, just stand your ground with a polite, “No, thank you”. 7. Move your body as much as possible every day; possibly go for a walk after meals. Be motivated to move because you love your body, and it will also help the digestive process. 8. If you receive food as a holiday gift, and you know opening it may lead to eating a little more than you’re comfortable with, bring the food gift into work to share with your coworkers or donate it to a food pantry. 9. Love your body! It does so many fabulous things for you every day. 10. Count the happy moments in your life, not the calories on your plate. • Tami Racaniello, CPT-HFI, Health EmPOWERment Coach, joinus@itstimetogetfit.com 54

Butter is a real food and it’s delicious! No hydrogenation necessary, no flavor additives, no preservatives. My tip? Use REAL butter. It has vitamin A. It’s great for your eyes, skin and is essential for proper functioning of the thyroid gland. It has saturated fat. Saturated fat is not a dirty word. The short-and medium-chain saturated fatty acids in butter can help protect against cancer, boost immunity, fight fungal overgrowth and provide a steady source of energy for your body. Fats in butter are critical to lung function and help protect against asthma. It has trace minerals. Butter is rich in trace minerals, including manganese, chromium, zinc, copper and selenium (a powerful antioxidant). Butter is also an excellent source of iodine. Butter has vitamin K2. Vitamin K2 is the most beneficial form of vitamin K. It’s easily absorbed and utilized by the body. Vitamin K2 works with other fatsoluble vitamins like A, D & E to improve your health. Vitamin K2 is even associated with a lower risk for cancer and heart disease! • Tara Gidaly, Nutritional Therapist Gidaly Nutritional Therapy gidalynutrition@aol.com Mention this article and BUTTER and receive $20 off your 1st consultation to good health!

December is filled with Lights, Bubbly and STRESS! The next five weeks are a time when few hands will be without a bottle of wine - for gifts, for parties and family holiday dinners. Don’t panic! The perfect wine for you is the wine you like. That being said, I recommend having Prosecco on hand. We are now in a season of festivity. Having something bubbly on hand will enhance that feeling. Prosecco is not as dry as Champagne, but it has a delicate fizz. It is lovely all by itself. Prosecco is Italy’s answer to sparkling wine at a reasonable price. Also there is a cocktail made with Prosecco that is called “The Poinsettia Cocktail”, which is both delicious and lovely for the season. Making the poinsettia cocktail is simple and brief, but can have a big presentation impact when served to guests. When this drink is made, a stirred mixture of triple sec (1/2 oz.) and cranberry juice (3 oz.) rests in the glass with ice before a splash of Prosecco tops it off. All of the ingredients in this cocktail should be chilled before making this drink. As to the stress part... wine does have a calming influence (surprise, surprise). In fact, a dinner when accompanied by a glass of wine helps the body relax and unwind and can help the mental transition between work and relaxation. So, enjoy the holiday with your friends and family and keep the wine flowing. • Laurie Maniatis, Testa Wines of the World, 917-853-9104

food & nutrition Weight Watcher’s Success Story Angie Carpenter I began my relationship with Weight Watchers in the early 70’s, having battled weight my entire life. Losing weight is never easy, but I persevered and lost 84 lbs. in nine months. The program was very different from what it is today. It was much more structured, and did not always fit in with a busy lifestyle. After successfully losing the weight, I became a Weight Watcher’s lecturer, and a proud life-time member. Being a lecturer actually assists in maintaining your own goal weight. It is a positive reinforcement of your efforts, by constantly offering information to others on how to succeed with the program. The opportunity to lead others to their own personal success stories is truly rewarding. However, like most people who diet, I enjoyed food and regretfully gained the weight back over several years. I then had the mind-set to lose the weight again with a new and different Weight Watcher’s program. It was much easier to work the program into my hectic schedule. I have been successful in keeping the weight off for a number of years, and have completely changed my eating habits and incorporated an exercise regimen to maintain my goal weight. I have improved my health, my stamina, and make every effort to make healthy food choices. It is a program I highly recommend to anyone who is ready to take the first step to being healthier and losing weight. It is not a crash diet which certainly can be dangerous to your health. Anyone can be successful with the Weight Watcher’s program if they are truly dedicated to improving their life. It changed my life… I am certain it can change yours, if you want it!

Meanwhile, to make sauce, heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic; cook, stirring frequently, until onion is translucent, about 6 minutes. Add beef and fennel seeds to skillet; cook until browned, breaking up meat with a wooden spoon, about 3 to 4 minutes. Stir in tomatoes, salt, red pepper flakes and oregano; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until slightly thickened, about 10 minutes. While sauce simmers, add pasta to boiling water and cook according to package instructions, adding broccoli rabe to pasta water 5 minutes before pasta will be done; cook until pasta and broccoli rabe are tender. Drain pasta and broccoli rabe; return to pot. Add sauce; toss to mix and coat. Yields about 1 1/2 cups per serving. Notes This recipe is also great with lean ground turkey instead of beef. travel & things to do The Allure of Authentic Vacations Stray off the beaten path with a truly “authentic” vacation. Far from the traditional hotel-based vacation, these adventures allow you to immerse yourself in a new culture by enjoying local foods, meeting residents and other vacationers, while really becoming part of a new place. Authentic vacations can be tailored to your individual tastes and passions. Are you a strong supporter of the environment? Eco-tourism may be your bag, with journeys designed to minimize your carbon footprint or help you get closer to nature. In Isla Mujeres, Mexico, families frequently take in guests, or rent a whole house, so you can relax in comfort while enjoying life the way true locals live it. Shop local markets, grab lunch at a neighborhood place. Find a beach that’s not primarily geared to tourists; you may find a sandy oasis to call your own, ideal for a seaside barbecue. Swimming with whale sharks and big-game fish, such as sailfish, has become a popular activity over the past few years. Look for excursions that engage in sustainable ecotourism. This means they hire local people (to serve as guides, etc.), use local resources and are committed to re-investing the success of their business back into the surrounding culture. • CevicheTours.com, info@cevichetours.com photo © John S.
