Fall hair features layered, easy looks. Try a side-parted bang for a chic twist. Finger-style wavy hair (with a touch of Aveda Be Curly for shape) and blow-dry on a warm setting to preserve the curl and banish frizz. Keep it in place with Aveda Control Force for a brushable, firm hold. Multidimensional color replaces the opaque, solid-looking hues dominant last fall.

Fashion Week runways evoked menswear-inspired silhouettes with a feminine touch. A great example was Carolina Herrera’s show, with wide cowlnecks and big cuffs. These exaggerated elements softened crisp lines. photo copyright John S. Vater

Beauty is sophisticated yet simple Lips feature juicy, deep berry reds. Eyes are heavily lined and include pops of blues and greens, even metallic shades. Add drama and make eyes look bigger by lining the bottom lid and inside corners with white liner. 6

Ok, we’ve gotten the kids off to school. Now it’s time to take the time for ourselves! Since most of us only have less than an hour to get ready, we need a look that’s quick and easy! Finding that perfect cut takes some trust with your stylist. The short, hot pixie cut is great for fine to medium textured hair. It’s a wash-and-go look that can take you from day to evening in a matter of seconds. Then, there’s the classic “bob”. Made for all types of hair, it can take you from the boardroom to the soccer field looking stylish all day long. Women with long hair can use some hot rollers with a little mist of hairspray at the root to give you sexy, flowing hair in no time. Summer highlights are always great, but in the fall, warm your color up a bit with brown tones like caramel and copper (red is always fun, too!). Whatever cut or color you decide on, always see your hair care professional to keep your hair looking healthy. - Grace Monda & Colleen White CSI Hair Salon, Farmingville

ver walk through the beauty section of a department store hoping to find that one miracle in a jar, the fountain of youth to solve every first line & wrinkle? A ‘quick fix” perhaps? You approach several beauty counters, and in no less than five minutes your bombarded with salespeople promising you the next best thing for anti-aging and the solution to acne. Each associate from every skin care line seems to have “the answer.” However, what do you choose? So many choices, how does one know which direction to go in? Today’s skin care industry has evolved into the a marketplace of product after product offering the “next best thing.” As a consumer, how is one to know what is the “best” option or the correct choice for their individual concerns; to use soap, or not to use soap? Oxy pads, once a day, twice a day, or not at all? Product overload is in effect and the choices are endless. From the local drugstore to a professional spa, so many options make caring for the skin an anxiety producing experience. Options are great, however too many options are plain and simply overwhelming. So what is the average consumer to do to make intelligent purchasing decisions? Visiting a professional esthetician has become a popular trend among skin care conscious individuals. A trip to the spa leaves the patron, not only refreshed & renewed, but educated & informed as well. A monthly facial? Maybe

a weekly peel? Will a well balanced home care regimen suffice? Frequenting a highly recommended expert can deliver the consumer the answers & results, one has been looking for. An esthetician analyzes the skin closely under a magnetized lamp and can pinpoint one’s exact skin type & conditions. From there, he or she will educate the client on the appropriate products for the individuals skin type as well as how to care for the skin daily and what treatments would enhance one’s results. Whether the concern is acne, aging, blackheads, or rosacea, an esthetician can establish goals for the client and devise a well-balanced & customized plan. No two person’s skin are alike, therefore each person’s skin should be treated in a unique fashion. Factor’s such as diet, occupation, heredity, stress levels etc.., affect the health & appearance of the skin. As a result, each skin care program will vary per person. There are many treatment options and products to improve the skin. To name a few, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, topical retinol, peptides & stem cell serums all focus on skin renewal and rejuvenation. Do your research and find an estethician through referrals or reviews online. Although many of the newer treatments and technology today are non-invasive and safe, it is important to choose a professional with the proper credentials & experience. -Michelle Kelly, La Piele Boutique Spa

o many classes, so little time! You’re probably wondering which class will work best for you and exactly how much time you need to invest to reach your fitness goals. Accessing your most effective workout seems a bit intimidating at best. Really? Let’s break it down....exactly what are your fitness goals? Let me guess, tone up, strengthen up, increase your cardio capacity, and gain some of your flexibility back. Well, all these classes offer some benefits in these areas to a degree. Mix it up and you will challenge your body in a variety of ways, increasing your results! But most important, stick to it, stick to it, stick to it! The more consistent you are, the less time you will need to invest in your workouts in the long run. And remember... something is better than nothing. If you only have 10 minutes available on a given day, give it all you’ve got for those 10 minutes. Even jumping rope for 10 minutes can be a real challenge! If you find yourself losing motivation, find yourself a good personal trainer to help get you in the best shape of your life! -Carol Burke, Power of One Health and Fitness

W

e are all busy, this is something I hear everyday with my clients. All it takes is a little commitment and consistency to get your fitness and healthy habits on the right track. First step is to integrate fitness into your life. Fitness can be added into your daily routine if you just think about it more and begin to CHANGE your lifestyle. Take the stairs; take long walks, park further away from where your going. The weather is still nice out so take advantage of these small steps while you still can. The weather is perfect for outdoor activities because the temperatures are a little cooler. Discover trails in your area to hike, run, or walk. Rake leaves or do outdoor yard work is a great way to get your heart rate up and down and burn calories. When exercising outside, dress in a few layers in the Fall so you want your body to stay warm and keep the chill out. Fall is the perfect season to rejuvenate your body. Find your motivation this Fall and set goals. You have to be motivated by your day to day workout so you will stick to it. So choose something that you really enjoy doing and you will likely keep it up. Remember to always challenge yourself - this will keep you motivated. Fall into fitness this season with encouragement, accountability and success will follow. -Lauren Geldmacher, Body Design Fitness Studio

the power of

“now”

M

ost women have bought into the idea of multi-tasking. Some even believe they are experts at it, yet when I speak with them they tell me how frustrated, overwhelmed, and stressed they feel. The question is- are we really multi-tasking or just doing too many things at one time and loosing the joy of being in the moment? Earl Miller, a professor of neuroscience at MIT says, “People can’t multi-task very well, and when people say they can, they’re deluding themselves.” The truth is the brain cannot focus on more than one thing at a time. What it can do is shift its focus at astonishing speed creating the illusion of multi-tasking. I teach my clients to stop trying to do ten things at one time and just be in the NOW. Clear the clutter in your mind by putting your attention and awareness on the one thing you are doing at the moment. We can find joy in everything we do, if we look for it. Find that element of joy, allow it to grow within you, and The Law of Attraction will make a match to the positive frequency you are sending and bring you more of the same. Energy flows where attention goes, and we create our tomorrows by the energy we project into the universe today. Stop needing to control how and when everything comes into your life. Instead take one thing at a time, and make it your dominant intention each day to reach for feelings that “feel good.” Then, look for the changes that prove you are moving forward. Let go of the outcome, and be in the power of NOW. -Jean Summit-Riker, Tranquility Based Life Coach

hen you look in the mirror, what do you say to the person looking back at you? Is it positive? Thoughts and words are so powerful. We are often aware of it with others, but not always when it comes to ourselves. Negative thoughts can sabotage our best efforts towards a healthy lifestyle. Those thoughts often come from outside influences, and we subconsciously absorb them. Maybe they are from well-meaning friends or family members with their own body issues. Magazines, TV, and newspapers constantly bombard us with images and thoughts that rarely carry positive messages. We have to empower ourselves to break negative thought patterns. Every time you look in the mirror, say one positive thing about yourself, and say it out loud, not just in your head. If a negative thought enters your mind, change it to a positive. Post inspirational quotes or messages of encouragement, where you can see them, or send them to yourself by email or text. Be your own cheerleader, and live a positively healthy life! -Tami Racaniello, Health Empowerment Coach

HERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU CAN DO IN TERMS OF NUTRIENTS TO AFFECT ESTROGEN RATIOS: A high-quality green drink contains sprouted cruciferous vegetables broccoli, cauliflower, and kale. The sprouted forms are even more potent than the raw or cooked forms. 1 scoop per day is an excellent prevention strategy. Some also contain beet and carrot juices which have liver protecting abilities as well and of course the greens have the alkalizing effect of the grasses. Flax seeds- 2 tablespoons of ground up flax seeds on salad, in your green drink or with cruciferous vegetables has been shown to improve the 2/16 hydroxyestrone ratio

over and above what the veggies will accomplish. High-quality Essential Fatty Acids which contain a blend of ultra pure EPA, DHA, organic flax seed oil, cancer fighting GLA, and a balance of the omega 9 oils. 2-3 capsules 2 times per day will provide excellent protection. Finally, we can’t even talk about reducing breast cancer without talking about one of the biggest deficiencies in the Midwest and that is an iodine deficiency. Iodine protects breast, ovarian, uterine, and prostate tissue and is essential for healthy thyroid function. I recommend you see your clinician about iodine

supplementation. Many forms of iodine used are ineffective and your clinician will help you identify which form of iodine is safe and effective. Hopefully you are encouraged because there are things you can do to prevent breast cancer. Taking a Wellness approach has other benefits too. It can help reduce your fears, while strengthening your foundation for better overall health. Make a few simple changes and you can’t go wrong.

nstoppable is the best way to describe Carol M. Baldwin. The matriarch to the world’s most famous acting family (yes, those Baldwins) and breast cancer survivor, Carol has reframed the conversation about just what it will take to find a cure for breast cancer – and when it comes to getting support for her research fund initiative, she’s relentless. “The key to finding a cure for breast cancer is to fund research. These scientists are soldiers fighting on the front lines for us every day in search of a cure,” said Carol. “They’re not giving up. We’re not going to give up on them, either.” A Syracuse native and graduate of Syracuse University, Carol and her husband Alexander raised their family in Massapequa, Long Island. In 1983, after 29 years of marriage, her husband passed away of lung cancer and in 1990, Carol was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent a double mastectomy, a struggle that nearly took her life, and came through that frightening ordeal with a new purpose: to use whatever resources 20 22

she had to help researchers win the fight against breast cancer. In 1996 she, with family, friends and health professionals, took that vision and formed The Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research

Fund (findacure.org), an initiative to raise money to fund new and established researchers as they work to learn more about this disease and, ultimately, find a cure. Today there are two branches: one in Setauket

Long Island, the other in Camillus, NY, called The Carol Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund of CNY (findacurecny.org), serving central New York. The amount of money she’s raised to date is astounding: the Fund has awarded more than 57 research grants totaling in excess of $3 million to medical research. As if that weren’t impressive enough, she’s parlayed that $3 million into an additional $25 million in research dollars from the U.S. government. At 81 years’ young, Carol is a fundraising force to be reckoned with.

envelops this loving family. Absolutely devoted to their mom, all of the Baldwin children rallied behind Carol when she was going through her own ordeal with breast cancer. Today they are all deeply involved with the Foundation, lending their celebrity, business savvy and, frankly, pouring their hearts into this endeavor. Alec serves on the Board of Directors with Billy, and sister Beth is Executive Director of the Central New York branch. Stephen, Daniel and Jane are also key players helping to drive the success of the Foundation. “Mom is a character. She’s very tough, very passionate about the work she’s doing, and at the same time she’s also very sensitive. We love her very much,” said Billy. He noted that Carol has said her life’s most meaningful work has been in two stages of her adulthood: raising six children, and then working with the Foundation. “Mom has achieved so much throughout her life. It’s a testament to her strength and her passion that she’s done so much in the third stage of her life. We are all extremely proud of her.”

WORKING IT Carol is involved in every aspect

of the Foundation’s work. She attends many of the events held upstate, participates in Board meetings and plans out new initiatives to engage people, educate them and inspire them to join her cause. This past July, Carol was out and about hobnobbing with notables at the annual Celebrity Golf Outing, an event that raised thousands of dollars. The annual Spring Tea is also a very popular event, along with the yearly Breast Cancer Awareness Nights. Corporate sponsorships and ongoing donation campaigns fuel fundraising as well. There are even innovative campaigns like the Pink Ribbon Tone, a cell phone ringtone that donates the sale of the ringtone to the cause. “I will not stop until we find a cure,” she states, tirelessly.

WORLD-CLASS BREAST CANCER CARE ON LONG ISLAND Carol’s commitment to stamp out breast cancer once and for all is embodied in the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Center, a breast care center that is part of the University Hospital and Medical Center at the State University of Stony Brook,

THE STRENGTH OF FAMILY It’s a sunny day here on Long Island and William “Billy” Baldwin is running to a Board meeting, followed by a conversation with a luxury automobile manufacturer looking to donate one of their iconic cars for an fundraising auction. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors, Billy is also the Foundation’s Vice President. He spends a significant amount of time as one of the “front men” raising money, speaking with the media, emceeing events and more. Even with all that, when asked about his primary role within the organization, he says without hesitation: “I’m her son.” This sums up the tight bond that october 2011 gemmagazineli october 2011| | gem magazine

which opened its doors in 1995. It was the first of its kind in New York State to receive accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). Accreditation is given only to those centers that pass a rigorous evaluation process and performance review, and have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care. It is an incredible facility that takes treatment to the next level. Using a multidisciplinary approach, patients are treated by a surgeon and radiologist – both are present on-site – to clinically evaluate results with the mammography films in hand. Traditionally, radiologists send written reports to physicians who don’t have the benefit of seeing the films him/ herself, or of consulting directly with the radiologist who actually ran the test. Together the patient, radiologist and surgeon decide on an informed approach. This all happens while the patient is still on-site, immediately after the mammogram or other radiologic procedure, so women (and men – breast cancer occurs in men as well) can have the results of both findings and have a plan of action in hand, before going home that day. Another way the Center raises the bar for breast cancer diagnosis: surgical biopsies are performed on-site with a certified anesthesiologist who can provide conscious sedation. 22 24

gemmagazineli.com gemmagazineli.com

Anesthesiologists usually are not available in office settings (where surgical biopsies most likely occur). The Center is also a research facility, making the latest available knowledge accessible to patients so they can get on with the business of treatment and healing. “Some of the best care in the world for breast cancer can be found right here on Long Island,” said Billy. “People stop me on the street and say, ‘My mother or my sister went to Stony Brook and they were treated with such respect, so well.’ We have a phenomenal support system in place for the patient and their family. It is an unparalleled level of care – you don’t have to leave Long Island to find world-class treatment.”

TOGETHER WE WILL FIND A CURE! Carol busily works the phones, reaching out to corporate donors, planning her next speaking engagement and mapping out the Foundation’s next big fundraiser. “I can’t do this alone. None of us can. Funding researchers seeking the cases, prevention and treatment of breast cancer is critical to finding a cure. But there’s another dimension to this,” noted Carol. “We’re spreading the word that we’re all in this together. If we pool our resources, all of us put our heads together and work toward this common goal, we can eradicate breast cancer forever.” “Together we will find a cure!” - Hillary Call, Contributing Editor -Hillary Call

here is nothing worse than feeling self-conscious about your smile, whether it means holding back on a grin when photos are being taken or keeping lips tightly closed during a romantic gaze. Teeth can be moved the same way for a 56 year old as they can for a 13 year old, so braces are not just for children or teens. Braces for adults are not always about aesthetics. Some bad bites, which can affect speaking and eating, can get worse if left untreated. If teeth are poorly aligned or if bad habits are making them move out of place, time will only make things worse. Today, new technologies and space age materials are used in orthodontic systems to decrease the length of treatment time and enhance the effectiveness of braces. Many options, like Incognito™ and Invisalign®, are also extremely discreet. Incognito™ Orthodontic Braces are custom-made gold braces that are hidden behind your teeth, so no one will ever know that you are wearing braces. Invisalign® uses a series of removable, invisible aligners to straighten teeth. Orthodontists can give anyone, at any age, a spectacular smile! -Inna Gellerman, DDS Children & Adult Orthodontics

Hair Loss Due To CHemoTHerapy anD r a D i aT i o n

T

he announcement of cancer to anyone is devastating. Then comes chemotherapy and its further distressing side effect of hair loss. Hair loss happens because the chemo affects all cells in the body. Hair follicles are especially sensitive because its cells multiply rapidly as do cancer cells. Hair loss severity depends upon the types of chemo drugs used. Hair loss can occur as early as the second or third week after the first cycle of chemo or later. It can be sudden or slow. Hair loss can include the scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows, and even pubic hair. In most cases, hair will regrow after therapy is completed and can take from 3-6 months to grow. The new hair can be a different color, texture or curl. The loss of hair due to radiation is the same with one significant difference. High levels of radiation can

cause permanent hair loss is some areas. Sometimes women will experience additional fine, velus type hair growth on their faces after chemo. Unfortunately, this hair growth usually remains, and women who find this new superfluous facial growth usually seek some form of permanent hair removal. Since the hair is long and fine and of little color electrolysis is the best solution to this problem. -Patricia Chauvin MA, CCE, CME, FEHS, CLS

ctober is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and it is important that we understand just how serious breast cancer is in our society. It is the most common type of cancer in women and accounts for nearly 1 in 4 diagnosed cancers in the United States. It has been concluded that only a very small percentage of cancer is due to genetic predisposition and more theories are on the rise linking cancer to environmental toxins, pollutants and xenoestrogens (estrogen-mimicking chemicals). As a healthcare provider, I stress the importance of living a clean and more natural lifestyle. By educating my patients on what products to avoid, how to detoxify the body as well as what vitamins/supplements and foods can help protect against cancer. The earlier we start making lifestyle changes and reducing stress in the body, the greater our chances are of becoming healthier overall and becoming protected against this disease. I

n a perfect world, no one would need supplements. But given the stress of our modern life, the poor quality of our food supply, and the high load of toxins on our brains and bodies, most of us need a basic daily supply of the raw materials for all our enzymes and biochemistry to run as designed. The reason our food supply must be “enriched” is because it has been so processed that it is “impoverished” to start with. Today, even with our “enriched food,” over 92% of Americans are deficient in one or more vitamins. The foods you eat no longer contain the nutrient levels you require for optimal health for many reasons. Crops are raised in soil where nutrients have been depleted. Plants are treated with pesticides and other chemicals so they no longer have the fight to live, which further diminishes their nutrient levels and their phytonutrient content. Animals are cooped up in pens or giant feedlots instead of roaming free eating the nutrient-rich wild grains and grasses they once consumed. Since cow’s stomachs are adapted to grass instead of corn, they must take antibiotics to prevent them from exploding. To complicate this further, all of us are exposed to hazardous toxins and chemicals that poison our bodies. We live with too much stress, we don’t sleep enough, we don’t exercise enough, and we are inflamed, making the nutritional demands on our bodies even heavier. Those with chronic illnesses are in even worse shape. Vitamins are not drugs and they don’t work as drugs do. They work with your biology by supporting normal enzyme function and biochemical reactions. Taking supplements help prevent disease. -Colleen Simon, Health Hutt Vitamins

Reclaim youR life afteR a majoR Blow I am continuously amazed at the fortitude of many who are upended by a catastrophic event. Do you want to know why? A few months ago one of my oldest friends was hiking with her husband and friends on a clear day in South Africa. Then suddenly their group was hit by lightning. Everyone survived, except my friend Lynne who died two days later. Her 24-year old son said to me, “mom was living her life doing what she loved, travelling, having fun and being with others.” Those who are left behind, can best move on by recalling her uplifting legacy as mom, family Doctor and friend. As a helping professional, I have assisted many people in moving through transitions. A major key to getting back on your feet after a profound loss or life blow, is to transform “depression” into doing. Doing does not mean “busy work,” and “workaholism” is no antidote either. Figure out what you enjoy and go do it. I thought being hit by lightening was random. When it happens to your close friend, the wisdom of her 24 -year old son resonates: –go live life! n the US, one person dies from oral cancer every hour. The best way to cure it is with early detection, and the best way to achieve early detection is by regularly visiting your dentist. At every checkup, your dentist will do an oral cancer screening by checking for any unusual lesions. Many offices offer advanced screening tests such as Visilite Plus or VELscope that may highlight areas that are not visible to the naked eye. Smoking, family history and excessive alcohol consumption are increased risk factors; however, there is a new risk factor: certain strains of HPV. The same virus that has been linked to cervical cancer in women has been identified as greatly increasing the risk of developing oral cancer. HPV is often difficult to diagnose and may go untreated for years, so anyone who is sexually active, may be at a higher risk for developing oral cancer. Not all strains of the HPV virus are linked to cancer. Not everyone

who comes in contact with the HPV virus will be at risk of developing cancer. You wouldn’t think of missing your pap test or mammogram so why would you not be screened annually for oral cancer? Not all sores and lesions in the mouth are oral cancer. If your dentist sees something suspicious, you may have a follow-up visit or a biopsy. Something as simple as accidentally biting the inside of your cheek can create an abnormality. A cold sore or canker sore also appears abnormal, but with close monitoring, your dentist can be sure that you are healthy. If there is some cause for concern, you can seek the proper care sooner rather than later, as early detection is often the best chance at a cure. -Dr. Richard Rongo, Huntington Village Dental

the ymca of long island

T

he YMCA is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization engaging in over 10,000 neighborhoods across the U.S. committed to supporting and serving people in their communities improving the health and well being as a nation. The YMCA of Long Island Inc. began its efforts in helping people in communities in 1919 where a certificate of incorporation was developed as the Young Men’s Christian Association of Nassau and Suffolk Counties. During that time period, the main occupation on Long Island was farming due to the rural area, and the local villages were the source of community outreach. It was because of this vast need of resources that the YMCA became involved, offering an abundance of services which later lead to being active in 41 Long Island communities. Today, the YMCA of Long Island Inc. serves a wide range of populations. Currently in operation are six full 28

In addition, there are four counseling locations that specialize in youth counseling, family counseling, and substance abuse counseling, which are provided within in your local communities. We have also been fortunate to utilize The Great South Bay YMCA Boulton Center for Performing Arts for our fundraisers and various events throughout the year. The YMCA of Long Island is always looking to fill the needs of the communities and is forever changing. We are not just the gym anymore and our organization’s mission is for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. It is through these values that the YMCA of Long Island thrives as an organization that services and

supports the individuals, families and communities of Long Island. For Youth Development- we value the importance of children having the opportunities to learn and grow while helping them to reach their potential. Through programs such as Youth and Government, mentoring, Leaders Club, and CIT (counselor in training), the Y ensures these great opportunities are available for children and young adults to become active participants in strengthening their communities. In today’s world, families have increasing demands placed on them; many feeling the weight of our nations’ financial crisis. The Y offers quality, yet affordable pre-school child care and day camp programs providing a safe place

to learn and grow. It is the starting point for many children to engage in learning programs, physical activities, and developing healthy trusting relationships. They are helped to build self assurance through the Y’s values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. For Healthy Living- the term “healthy” no longer is confined to only the physical being and, in fact, is creating a balance between your mind, body and spirit. We currently offer 6 full facilities that promote healthy well being including educational programs in making healthier decisions. These six facilities are located in Glen Cove, Huntington, Bay Shore, Holtsville, East Hampton, and our newest facility in Patchogue. You’ll find a variety of recreational activities that’s appropriate for any age and the whole family. These facilities have updated equipment, swimming pools, day camps, and educational classes on understanding healthy eating and the impact of our nation’s obesity battle and other long term health conditions. The Y can be the place where your family can find reprieve from the daily social and economic challenges. We have brought together members to provide quality and affordable family time that strengthens relationships and promotes healthy living. We continue to have a strong desire to build stronger connections among individuals and families, to strive for greater work/life balance and becoming more active in their communities. For Social Responsibility- The foundation of the YMCA of Long Island Inc. is built upon may hardworking employees, volunteers and the generosity of public and private donors. horse rescue Amidst the warm atmosphere and bucolic setting of Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard lies a horse haven unlike any other on Long Island. Horses whose lives were at risk have, through love and dedication of co-founders Richard Rubin and Sharon Rubin-Levine, been given a second chance. There, they not only find sanctuary, but are given the opportunity to become ambassadors, helping to educate the public about the need for legislation to protect horses. Since 2007, the same patience and loving attention that goes into making wine at BHFV has gone into nurturing these beautiful rescued horses back to health and exuberance. Horse lovers of all ages can tour the paddocks. Help continue their efforts on behalf of these alluring animals. Be assured that your kind support would be tremendously appreciated. yberbullying is more common than you think, affecting almost half of all American teens . Harassment can seem inescapable since it follows kids into their homes with texts, emails or Website postings. “Cyberbullying is difficult to control because it can be done anonymously,” said Christine Cione, Community Educator for Long Island Crisis Center. “To a young person, emotional violence can be more damaging than physical violence.” Cione recommends talking with kids before problems start. “Let them know they can turn to you (or a teacher, etc.) for help,” she said. Also, keep computers in a common area to monitor your child’s online activity. Be aware of their screenames. Get comfortable with social media. If cyberbullying does happen, cellular providers can block texts and incoming calls. Report instances to your ISP, Facebook or MySpace. Talk to your child’s principal. LICC counselors can help, too, through the hotlines (516/679-1111) or online (LICConline.org). “Kids don’t have to silently ‘take it,’” said Cione. “It’s OK to ask for help.” -Hillary Call, Long Island-Hillary Crisis Center Call

S

tarting a young child in a music program at the tender age of 3 or 4 will have a positive impact on their physical, emotional and cognitive development. We certainly do not wait until a child goes to school to begin teaching them their language so why wait to introduce them to music? Such is the essence of the Suzuki method of learning named for Dr. Shinichi Suzuki. Dr. Suzuki adapted the same method used naturally by parents to teach their children (practically from birth) to speak their language to the process of learning how to play violin (cello, piano). The Suzuki method involves the parent as part of the teaching team and uses the auditory method of learning. The note –reading comes later, but first

the musical ear is developed and so the students play by memory. Developing memory skills, small motor skills and self confidence are all by-products of this methodology. The program expects the parent to be involved in the daily practice (only 10 min a day) and attend private and group classes to witness the process first hand. To be able to bring mom, dad or beloved caregiver to class is an added bonus for the very young child. The program develops the musician using classical repertoire from Bach to Vivaldi but starts with the very popular children’s song Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star for which there are 4 variations in addition to the theme. In addition to a weekly private lesson the students learn in a group class setting

that ensures social interaction, fun and solo performance. The Suzuki method emphasizes encouragement, repetition and patience – valuable parenting skills not just reserved for music class. -Joan Albright Huntington Center for Performing Arts

A

garden of imagination is a place where one can dance, sing, laugh and heal. The imagination garden sparks our desire to build an outward garden so we can engage our senses in a way that helps us reconnect our bodies to the land. Gardens have an incredible ability to nurture and replenish the soul. Gardens are a personal paradise. The word “paradise” can traces its origin back to the Persian word Pairidaeza, a term that means a wall of protection around the hearth or garden of Eden. A healing garden is a garden where a person can feel safe, less stressed and comfortable. To create your own garden, choose a space that allows for solitary contemplation. Select a variety of plants with different textures, scents and colors. Green represents a lush life, blue and violets promote serenity and reflection. Plants can be selected for their medicinal or symbolic properties. When we tend plants, we draw in their color, smell and texture and we are brought closer to ourselves. “Nature is but another name for health…” Henry David Thoreau -Victoria Silverman, Landscape Architect

aStrology - october Jupiter goes retrograde October 2nd at 8° Taurus; goes direct at 0° Taurus on December 25th. Jupiter rules the ninth house which is ruled by Sagittarius; therefore, philosophy, religion, foreign travel and higher education are in the limelight. If these energies are used with generous actions, return of benefits can be great when it goes direct. It is important to keep things in order and not to over expand in any actions you may take. Think positive and be optimistic. Jupiter is in the sign of Taurus, which rules the second house. Taurus not only rules material resources and money, it rules personal values. This may be the time to re-evaluate what is important to you on a spiritual level. Is what you are doing materially feeding your spirit? Do not be over confident by over expanding yourself. Jupiter has a way of doing this. Make sure your finances are in order. Jupiter in Taurus also can mean trouble with creditors. Libra - Saturn in Libra conjuncts with your sun. This occurs approximately every twenty-nine years. This is a very important transit. Many aspects of your life are beginning to change; maybe your residence, job, or relationships. You will be pruning away that which is no longer working for you. Look to new beginnings to established paths that are appropriate for you. So let the sun shine on your birthday. -Maryann Dellinger, Astrological, Metaphysical & Psychic Insight 32

Scrapbooking: a Simple StreSS reliever

O

ur customers always tell us that scrapbooking is cheaper than therapy. People start scrapbooking for many different reasons. Once they begin they all say the same thing... It feels good. While they are scrapbooking, the stress in their everyday life melts away. They lose themselves in the creative process. Some love telling their story by enhancing the pictures with embellishments and patterned papers. Some love to journal about the story behind the photos. Some just love the social aspect of going to crops and getting inspired by being in a group of people with the same passion they have. The best thing about scrapbooking is that there are no rules, and you don’t need any special talents. If you can glue a picture to a piece of paper and write a title, you can scrapbook. Scrapbooking is an amazing way of preserving and displaying personal family history, milestones, friendships or business memories that otherwise might fade away in a box of photos in the closet. -Diana Gaizo, Not Just Scrap

uring the last decade or so I have observed a definite deterioration of respect and appreciation for quality interior designers and a disregard for fine design. Whether you live in a castle or a modest home, your surroundings are key to your comfort and well being. The selection of good quality pieces has been replaced with low quality “disposable” imported furniture that has a 2- 5 year life span. I now see an awareness after 10 years of the futility of these purchases and a return to some of the finer products coming into play. Supporting and enjoying the high quality American and European furniture is once again becoming fashionable. Less and less “do it yourself” projects are appealing and a finer quality of design is appreciated. A small or large project can be greatly enhanced by a professional

interior designer with experience and knowledge. A good designer will work with items you have that will enhance the areas and add great colors and accessories. My advice would be to interview a few recommended designers, discuss their design fees and view

their portfolios so you can find just the right fit. Once this is accomplished, the consumer will be amazed at the results as progress is made. A lasting investment will be created to come home to and enjoy with friends and family. -Claudia Dowling, Claudia Dowling Interiors

home decor ThE CiTy of LiGhTS I just returned from one of my favorite cities on earth; Paris, and immediately began that oh so familiar downward spiral into a state of post vacation depression. What is it about the city of lights that steals my heart away? I couldn’t bear to eat another slice of Chacuetterrie (processed meats anyone?) or risk ordering Rognon (raw veal kidneys) or andouillette (nasty little sausages stuffed with the entrails of some kind of livestock) in error and the thought of foraging for a simple bottle of water while marching through the streets on a close ninety plus September day again was more than I could bear. I wanted a nice strong steamy shower rather than a tepid bath. I missed my pup and was anxious to get back to my studio and the drawing board. And yet – here I was, feeling down and disconnected. L e g a L C o n s i d e r at i o n s in Buying a FranChise With rising and persistent unemployment, there has been increased interest in buying a franchise as a viable way to launch or relaunch one’s career. Before considering this option, potential buyers should understand what a franchise is, and how agreements with franchisors may vary.

-Paula Klee Parish

A franchise is: A long term arrangement. For the sale of goods or services. Under the franchisor’s trademark. Pursuant to the franchisor’s instructions. In exchange for the payment of initial and ongoing fees. The advantages of franchising include: A turnkey system; A proven formula; Established name recognition and goodwill; and Support services, including training, marketing, site location, business counseling and franchisee associations. However, buying a franchise is a long-term commitment, and it can significantly hinder the franchisee’s entrepreneurial flexibility and initiative. For example, typically, franchisees must sell only the goods or services offered or approved by the franchisor. If those offerings go out of style, or can be more economically purchased through another channel, the franchisee cannot add new products or services to its offerings without the franchisor’s consent. Most franchisors are required to disclose extensive information about their operational and financial history and experience. The Federal Trade Commission has published Buying a Franchise: A Consumer Guide which is an invaluable resource. Even once a potential buyer has settled on a particular franchise, he or she should review the franchise agreement carefully. Especially important questions include: 1. What is the assigned or exclusive territory and is it adequate to support projected or mandated sales volumes? 2. Is the franchisee vulnerable to competition from on-line sales channels? 3. What are the mandated operating hours and inventory requirements? 4. What preconditions, such as upgrading of a facility or payment of a renewal fee, can the franchisor impose on renewal of the franchise? 5. Are the franchisor’s obligations clearly spelled out? 6. What constraints are imposed on transfer of a franchise, such as a franchisor right of first refusal? 7. Are the dispute resolution procedures fair and accessible?

Live a FuLFiLLing LiFe— o n e d ay at a t i m e … Are You Your Own Worst Enemy? Going back as far as you can remember…what were the influences that caused you to make poor choices? Were they parental, societal, environmental, or cultural influences…or, did genetics play a role? Or, are you merely existing by default because you do not know what you want? Scenario: Guilty, or Not Guilty…What’s your verdict? Here’s an example of a destructive pattern of behavior. Does this sound like you? Do you listen to old songs that bring back sad and unpleasant memories that make you cry? You just sit there, feeling sad, listening to the song. Why don’t you just turn the radio off? Or better yet, switch to another station? Why do you continue to listen to something that’s painful and upsetting? Do you choose to suffer? Let’s take this scenario a step further by asking yourself… what type of “blamer” are you? Do you blame yourself or do you blame others? Did you listen to the song because you needed to know what “you” did wrong? If your answer is yes, and I were a betting person… would bet that you did nothing wrong. It was just not the right situation for you at the time; however, you feel you must punish yourself by listening to the song. Again the question is why? Why do you choose to listen rather then “choose” to switch the station? Blaming Yourself—Key “influence” of—Learned Helplessness… The focus now is for people who choose to blame themselves when disappointing situations happen, as in the scenario above, and continue to suffer over what “they” might have done, and what might have been…even years later. So now you are saying…“So what’s the big deal; I got over it”. Did you? Think about it. It is a big deal if you continuously blame yourself for situations over which you have no control. Key point—You do not have control over other’s thoughts or actions. But, you do have control over your thoughts, actions, wants and desires.

diagnosis of Cancer can be financially devastating to most families even those who carry health insurance. According to Ladies Home Journal, Oct 2007, out of pocket spending averaged $35, 878 for those struggling with a Cancer diagnosis and about a million of those individuals have to file for bankruptcy due to their illness. One out of three women will be affected by cancer. When you are in the biggest battle of your life, you need to focus on your health and not worry about your finances. Cancer insurance can provide that peace of mind for you. It helps to defer the costs not covered by your medical insurance and protect your savings and family from financial hardship so that you can concentrate on getting well. Cancer insurance can be purchased for a relatively low cost. It’s better to be prepared for the worst and hope that the worst never comes. -Michele Martin, Allstate

What do you do when pay day comes? Most people have their paychecks direct deposited into their bank accounts (no waiting for the check to clear.) here are so many networking groups out there that you can be out every day and night and continually meet people. And if your goal is limited to just meet people to potentially do some business with, you will have many options. But if your goal is to enrich, empower, and support others in a friendly, caring environment, your choices are limited. Women on the Move is such a group. Through its founder, Paula Klee Parish, who is a Personal Achievement Coach, Motivational Speaker, and Author, the women who attend the monthly meetings of Women on the Move are never disappointed. Paula not only spotlights one of the group’s members at each meeting to talk about their business, their career or something that they love doing, but she provides a guest speaker for each meeting who is there to provide wisdom to the attendees. Whether it be health, finance, legal, or something fun like exotic chocolates, the meetings are always motivating. In addition to the once a month meetings that take place on Thursday nights, Women on the Move also has business brainstorming sessions over breakfast, and a periodic lunch meeting to accommodate all schedules. Whether you are employed, in transition, or just looking to enrich your mind, body and soul, attend a Women on the Move meeting and see for yourself the value you will receive. Great meetings, great women and great information are shared by all. Women on the Move is an organization that prides itself on giving back to the community. We offer scholarships through our educational scholarship fund, helping members of our community transition from one phase of life to another with dignity and the resources to move forward. We hope to see you at a meeting soon. n this changing world, our society demands so much from our women. While we a need Make-up artist for our appearance and a fashion designer for the best outfit, nutrition is essential for women in today’s world. As they said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Paying attention to nutrition is the best approach to stay healthy. Communication is important, know what your body is missing and asking you for. From aches, pains, arthritis, insomnia, fatigue, allergies to chronic diseases are all linked with malnutrition. Here are a few easy steps to help you: 1. Plan healthy food ahead. It can be challenging to have healthy dishes on your table. As Monday starts our busy schedule, we have no time for meal planning. An example of a healthy food plan, can be found in Chapter 2 of my book “Healthy Eating Wholesome Living”. 2. Rainbow nutrition. According to recent studies, a diet rich in colorful fruits and vegetables may lead you to good health. Every pigment in plants represents a unique nutrient that offers tremendous benefits and can protect against certain disease. You need all the color you can get; rainbow nutrition benefits you. 3. Make exercise your daily routine, which is inevitable a part of healthy lifestyle. You cannot stay healthy without physical activities. -Yu-Shiaw Chen, Ph.D., CN, LI Nutrition

omen account for 80% of wine purchases in retail stores. We often choose wines based on the wine ratings on shelf cards and signage at the retail shop. However, ratings can be misleading. I have looked at a shelf tag that said “Wine Spectator” only to look a little closer to see that the shelf tag said in small print, “as mentioned in the Wine Spectator”! That means the wine could have just been advertised in the Wine Spectator. And paying for advertising has nothing to do with the quality of the wine. So look at those shelf cards carefully to see if the advertised ratings numbers are for the vintage of wine that is being sold and the shelf tag says the 44

wine you are looking at has actually earned those ratings they are touting! Preferences aside, it may be healthier to choose red wine. 60 Minutes first examined the so called “French Paradox”, which suggested the French, despite a diet high in fats, also drink a lot of red wine and have a significantly lower incident of heart disease compared to most Americans. Researchers agreed there was something to this and even the highly cautious federal dietary guidelines say moderate consumption of red wine can be beneficial. Scientists across the country have identified an antioxidant in red wine called resveratrol that they believe might help protect the heart. -Laurie Maniatis, Testa Wines of the World

THE SKINNY ON THE HCG DIET Back to school: what’s for lunch? Packing a healthy lunch for your kids is not easy, but the benefits outweigh the hassle. Most school lunch programs offer lunches loaded with what people crave most; fat, salt and sugar. Is that what you want your growing kids to be made of? Instead, send them off to school with a lunch box filled with nourishing foods that give them energy and help them focus. Talk to your kids. Explain how foods affect their energy, attention, moods and behavior. Get them involved in preparing their lunch. Have a variety of healthy foods for them to choose from. Stay away from white! Choose whole wheat bread, pita, wraps and rolls. Fruits, vegetables, yogurt and string cheese are good options. Quality counts. Buy peanut butter with few other ingredients and nitrate free sandwich meats. Good quality yogurt does not come in a tube. Try to stay away from pre-packaged processed foods and go for the real whole foods. Don’t let it stress you out. Yes, packing lunch is more work then buying lunch, but raising healthy, strong and intelligent kids is your reward. -Jo Ann Bellistri All That Wellness, Inc. Corporate & Private Health Coaching

Americans, obesity is pandemic. The dangers of being overweight are well documented, but still the struggle remains. Stemming from a slow metabolism, uncontrolled food cravings, emotional eating, or an insatiable appetite, one’s battle with weight control is a frustrating one. HCG stands for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin. It is a natural hormone produced during pregnancy. The HCG diet ‘tricks’ your body into a pregnancy state. In this state, your body protects the ‘growing fetus’ in periods of food shortage. Simeons in the 1950s first noted this natural ‘survival mechanism’, when visiting India. In this third world country, pregnant women were eating a few hundred calories daily, walked for miles, and engaged in strenuous physical chores. Babies that were delivered during his studies were full size, weight, and healthy. Responsible is the fat burning properties of HCG. One will never see an obese pregnant woman. Women often gain weight after pregnancy, when their HCG levels drop. Over 100,000 people have lost weight using this diet with essentially 100% success. Under a doctor’s supervision, combined with a low calorie diet, this is a safe and effective method for weight loss, as pointed out most recently by Dr. Oz. Patients typically lose 1-2 pounds per day while increasing your energy, reducing your appetite, and keeping the weight off, all while feeling well. HCG is unlike any other diet in that it resets your metabolism by acting on a portion of your brain leaving you with a faster metabolic rate. The diet works for both men and women. Many of the negative press the HCG diet has absorbed is from

the homeopathic version of HCG. During the diet, you eat 500 calories. Your body is still receiving 2,000-3,000 calories per day by breaking down fat. With the proper vitamin supplementation and blood tests, this diet is safe. Being overweight is dangerous. If you tried to eat 500 calories without HCG would you lose weight? Yes, but you would feel lethargic, have headaches, much of the weight lost would be muscle, while fat would first be lost in your face, chest, and other undesirable areas. An anorexic is someone on a starvation diet. Look at their appearance. Their faces are sunken in, their ribs are protruding, but often they still have a belly. These unwanted areas of fat are the last to go on a pure starvation diet but the first to disappear on the HCG diet. While on HCG you will feel energized, your muscles are spared and the fat you lose will be in areas such as your belly, hips and thighs. Discovered in the the 1950, Trudeau again brought it to light in 2007. The HCG True Diet is a physician monitored version of this diet and is widely popular. Most recently Dr. Oz and the NY Times highlighted this diet as an effective weight loss solution when monitored by a physician. This doctor would say the same. For more information on the HCG diet, please call the office or check out the HCG True diet. -Dr. Scott Blyer, Cameo Surgery

food & nutrition With Strength, Support a n d d e t e r m i n at i o n

“It’s A New Day” When I was 28 I went into congestive heart failure. I was pregnant at the time. It was my first pregnancy and in the beginning months my doctors always made me aware of my weight but I was fine…I felt fine.. until I couldn’t breathe. I ended up having my daughter 6 ½ weeks early. You would think that at 28 years old it would upset me to have a cardiologist appointment every other week. I just accepted this as part of my daily routine. It wasn’t until months later when I was at a Gymboree class with my daughter that my eyes were opened. At the end of that class another mom, whom I didn’t know, told me I left the tag on my new pants. I didn’t have new pants; I was wearing my husbands jeans, size 36X30. I got in my car that day and cried…not because they knew I was in a 36 but because they knew I was wearing my husbands jeans…how silly that sounds now. That’s when I knew I wanted to go back to Weight Watchers. I went to the West Babylon center and began my final journey on Weight Watchers… my highest weight was 257 pounds. I am 5 feet tall. I was too embarrassed to go to a meeting. I didn’t want anyone who knew me to see me. I was always a yo-yo dieter but this was the first time I was obese. So I began the program at home. I was losing some weight, but realized I needed much more support 46

than I can do on my own so I began to attend Wednesday morning meetings. That was the best thing I ever did! The weight was coming off, though at the time it felt like it was taking forever!!! I look back now and realize how quickly those .2 and .6 add up. I learned that it is okay to enjoy the foods I love in moderation, I learned that we are human and have good weeks and bad weeks. I learned the hardest thing to change is the self-critic inside of you. Once you start seeing the positive things you accomplish, it makes those that seem so difficult just a little bit easier! I can tell you it took me just over 18 months to drop my weight when I met goal of 128 pounds. I had lost almost 130 pounds….literally half of my body weight. My current weight is 115.6 pounds and I am proud to say that I am a Weight Watchers Leader in our

newest location, Deer Park, New York. Once I lost the weight, I knew I wanted to help others. The support you receive at Weight Watchers meetings is powerful. The people that you meet become family, the lessons that you learn are golden and lifestyle changes that you make to become a healthier you are priceless! So if you are ready to begin your journey on weight loss I would tell you this: 1. Do it for you, 2. Set small achievable goals, 3. Accept that life happens and you don’t have to be perfect each week as long as you are accountable for your actions, 4. The little changes that you make in your everyday life are your biggest successes and 5. If you need support come in and visit a Weight Watchers meeting for free. We would love to welcome you and help you achieve your weight loss goals.

wimming alongside a 40-foot-long whale shark is a humbling experience. Every June through September eco-adventurers from around the world congregate in Isla Mujeres, Mexico to witness these gentle giants make their way along the coast. Whale sharks come here in droves to swim together through these crystal blue waters. Guests snorkel alongside these magnificent creatures, docile filter-feeders, who seem only mildly intrigued by our presence. This swarming of whale sharks, or afuera, has reached unprecedented numbers. Recently more than 400 whale sharks cruised by Isla Mujeres at once, the largest aggregation every recorded. Whale sharks are an endangered species protected by the Mexican government who put rules in place to preserve their safety. With only 10 swimmers in the water at once, whale sharks can enjoy the experience too, watching us as we observe their majestic wonder. ith gas prices on the rise, airfare has increased making it difficult for travelers on a budget to reach their destinations especially when considering family vacations. Punta Can is a very affordable tropical paradise with beautiful beaches along the Atlantic and Carribean Oceans. The resorts further south are in the Carribean. Having traveled to Punta Cana a few times my favorite family vacation was at Dreams Palm Beach Resort. Just 3-1/2 hours away located on the sun drenched southern east coast of the Dominican Republic, this resort is an idyllic haven for singles, couples and families. It’s one of the smaller, all-inclusive resorts which makes it very selfcontained if you’re traveling with children. They offer Core Zone, a teen club and Explorer’s Club for younger children two of the many great amenities. The service here is impeccable! Room and concierge services are offered 24:7. The staff is very accommodating and since Dreams is a smaller resort the staff will know you by name. They also work really hard putting on nightly shows in the newly renovated night club. The resort houses three beautiful sun basked pools 48

food & nutrition h e a lt h b e n e f i t s of olive oil

O

live oil is rich in monounsaturated fat and antioxidants like chlorophyll, carotenoids and vitamin E. Scientists have identified a compound in olive oil called oleuropein which prevents the LDL cholesterol from oxidizing. It is the oxidized cholesterol that sticks to the walls of the arteries and forms plaque. Replacing other fats in your diet with olive oil can significantly lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart attack. A study published in the January 2005 issue of Annals of Oncology has identified oleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid found in olive oil, as having the ability to reduce the affect of an oncogene (a gene that will turn a host cell into a cancer cell). This particular oncogene is associated with the rapid growth of breast cancer tumors. The conclusion of the researchers was that oleic acid when combined with drug therapy encouraged the self-destruction of aggressive, treatment-resistant cancer cells thus destroying the cancer. Olive oil has been positively indicated in studies on prostate and endometrial cancers as well. -What’sfordinner.com

estaurant dining is getting a makeover at Grasso’s in Cold Spring Harbor. While we all love the experience of dining out and tasting creatively prepared foods in a social atmosphere, what we really want are options to make healthier choices in restaurants. The hottest consumer trend is the growing demand for healthier menu options and more accurate nutritional information in restaurants. Grasso’s Restaurant, a lovely storefront in the village of Cold Spring Harbor, has a menu that is ahead of the curve, offering dishes like veal scaloppini saltimbocca with prosciutto di Parma and fresh sage or a risotto with roasted apple butternut squash and brussel sprout leaves that are specifically designated as gluten free (GF) or vegetarian. At Grasso’s, guests can choose appetizers, pastas and entrees that are freshly prepared to meet their health needs. The designations are noted right on the menu, allowing guests the freedom to make personal dietary decisions at their own discretion. The fall menu, new this month, is filled with delectable new dining choices, half of which are either gluten -free or vegetarian. This commitment to the health and well being of her guests is Gail Grasso’s signature statement to good eating here on Long Island. Grasso’s Restaurant is owned by Gail Grasso and along with her chef of seventeen years, Tony Canales, they have recreated their restaurant with the passion for pleasing their guests by offering a wide variety of culinary delights with a health-conscious point of view. The sophisticated bar is a lively place to start with specialty martinis which can be made with choice organic vodkas. Every Wednesday through Saturday night, the room transforms into a little nightclub as live jazz musicians take the stage for your entertainment. In the more romantic dining room, guests can enjoy seasonal selections and old favorites like fresh cavatelli Bolognese that will surely tempt the palate. If you want to eat on the lighter side, try grilled calamari served with baby arugula, chopped tomatoes, olive oil and balsamic vinegar, or Prince Edward Island mussels with coconut milk, red 50

A wide variety of pasta dishes, like fresh fusilli with lobster, can be made gluten free or with whole-wheat pasta, as per request. Enticing entrée specials include an authentically prepared whole branzino fish with olive oil and lemon, or grilled Atlantic salmon served with fresh green lentil salad and roasted beets. For those who prefer meat, grilled fillet mignon and fruit stuffed pork loin are perfectly and healthfully prepared, all served with fresh vegetables and delectable accompaniments to satisfy all your cravings. Struggling with your healthy eating goals at a restaurant? Eat out sensibly. Try not to arrive at the restaurant starving because you won’t be able to keep out of the bread basket! One important component of eating healthfully is maintaining sensible and appropriate portion sizes. Try these tips –you’ll stay healthy while enjoying dining out.

• Instead of a large entrée, order an appetizer and a leafy green salad or choose two appetizers. • Share from start to finish. Order one appetizer for the whole table and then order one dessert with multiple forks. Sometimes, just a bite or two is perfect. • Share an entrée. You can ask your server to split the meal in the kitchen or divide it up yourselves at the table. • Beware of beverage calories from alcohol, juice and sodas. Consider these calories as extras. Have a glass of wine, a light beer or add club soda to your cocktail to keep control of calories.

A Whole Approach to a Hea

• Savor your meal twice as much. Eat half at the restaurant, then take the other half home to enjoy with a green salad the next day.

afe Buenos Aires in Huntington is the place to meet your gal pals to enjoy a well-chosen glass of Malbac wine or share a pitcher of fruity sangria. Enjoy mingling with the vibrant bar crowd or sit at the sidewalk café. Be charmed by the turn-of-the century onyx and mahogany bar while you sample a selection of mouth-watering hot or cold tapas, like beef, chicken or creamy corn empanadas, garlicky shrimp, delectable salt-cod croquettes and lush Serrano ham. The cuisine at Café evokes the tastes of Argentina and along with the ambience of this village hot spot, you feel transformed by its soul and South American spirit. Girls may choose to sit and relax in the dining room and enjoy an extensive menu from the kitchen of Argentina, accented with European influences. The specialty seafood dishes, like monkfish wrapped in prosciutto and the ever- popular, pan-seared striped bass with risotto get raves. A signature dish is the Argentinean beef, brightened with chimichurri sauce. A cheese course of manchego and Argentina reggianito with guava paste is available for sharing. Girls will love the luscious flan for dessert. Café Buenos Aires, always entertaining and social, especially on Friday nights when professional tango dancers move gracefully through the rooms enlivening the mood even more.
