NEWS
About 2 months ago, I was sitting in front of my computer doing my usual research on the internet and I came across a photography competition which was organised by the Canarian newspaper ‘Canarias7’. The competition was looking for the best photograph which showed “The Canaries and its’ people”, and each participant could present a maximum of five pictures to enter the contest.
As you all know I am always out and about following all types of stories, local fiestas, events, traditional gatherings and shows, and without giving too much thought I decided to post five of my many photos which I have taken during my travels. I have thousands of pictures from my stories, which I have been writing for you for almost a year now, and have seen how Canarians live and celebrate their many fiestas. Continued on page 4 ...

First Prize Photographic Competition seven years in London, so I decided to surprise my flat mate and stopped at my local supermarket and buy the usual bacon, eggs and beans. Whilst in the queue to pay for these articles I noticed that everyone was holding the Sunday paper! I very rarely buy a newspaper and I suppose that the fact that everyone had one made me grab a copy for myself, after paying I made my way back home!
Continued from front page ... I have a very good general picture of who they are; being a Canarian myself, of course helps immensely!
Leaving it at that, I later decide to go back and post two more, but I feel I did this more to try and reach the maximum number of pictures than convinced about the quality of them.
It wasn’t easy to choose just five from the many photographs I have, and I needed to ask myself “what should I try and show?” I thought I could submit some from the huge Canarian party, the carnival, or some more traditional fiestas such as the ones in Tejeda, San Mateo or Valleseco.
However when I was browsing through my photos, I came across some of my earlier ones which caught my attention more than the others, namely my visit to “La Varada del Pecado” in Arinaga and the time I travelled to La Aldea and reported on the fiesta of “El Charco”, which takes place every 11th September. From both events I chose a photograph, as I felt that both were worthy of at least sharing with the other participants of the competition.
Becoming very excited I quickly read the phrase underneath it and “Yes” it was my photograph and I had won the competition! I cannot quite describe everything I felt at that moment as it all seemed to happen very quickly, what I did do was to get up and bang on my flat mates’ bedroom door, giving him the fright of his life which almost knocked him off his bed! I’m sure you can imagine that the rest of the day I was on a cloud and extremely pleased with myself, calling relatives and friends to communicate this great personal achievement. I suppose what made it even more special was the fact that I did not expect it at all, after all it was the very first and only photographic competition I have entered.
Forgetting about the whole thing I carried on my daily life writing for the paper and travelling all around the island for my stories, until 4th July came along. After dropping my son off with his mother I made my way back home to Maspalomas, and for some reason I felt like having a full English breakfast - a custom which I acquired during my

I arrived home and my flat mate was still sleeping so I put the shopping down in the kitchen and grabbed the paper to have a quick look through it. Just reading the headlines I started to flick through the pages until I reached page 14, where to my surprise I noticed what looked like one of my photos; to be more precise the one of a man been thrown in the air by a group of youngsters with a net inside the ‘Charco’.

The following Thursday I was invited by the management of Canarias7 to attended a small awards ceremony which was held at their very impressive offices in Las Palmas, together with the judges, directors of the newspaper and other contestants. I must admit I thoroughly enjoyed it and I can only praise how well we were all treated during this event. And to finish I
of sentient beings she helped, and the legions of friends and supporters who admired her loving, helping, giving, benevolent ways. The news this morning spread a pall over our little animal charity car boot market. Most participants heard the news and simply packed up and headed home, downtrodden and depressed by the reality of our community and personal loss.
Anita will be remembered by community advocates throughout our paradisiacal island as a feminine spirit rich with compassion, empathy, and graciousness. No doubt you knew Anita in person or by regal reputation. Anita was loved and beloved by all with whom she came in contact. We are much less without her. TARA

The Arguineguin Parade satisfying to see the great number of tourist and foreign visitors attending this very special fiesta. Boats from all southern ports gathered at the mouth, anxiously awaiting the virgin, which included big fishing boats, sail boats of all sizes, small motor launches and even jet skis; most of these with their music systems turned on to help create a party mood and packed to capacity with a great number of guests ready for the big day!
Once again the time came around for all sailors to worship and pay tribute to their saint, La Virgen del Carmen, who it is said watches over them throughout the year ensuring their safe return home. The legend says it was sailors who found her image at sea and since then she became their protector on the long voyages in search of fish, and every year fishing villages around Spain pay tribute to her with a huge boat parade, and so this year I went to the Arguineguin one to live the experience like one more. And so at ten o’clock in the morning on 18th of July, I found myself in Arguineguin which was packed with people from all over the island; again it was extremely

At 10.30 the virgin image of El Carmen was loaded onto the chosen boat for this year and who had the honour of carrying her. This privilege is only reserved for the professional fishing boats of the harbour of Arguineguin and which change every year. The image is carried by the fishermen themselves, followed closely by a massive crowed of devotees who always congregate to see her leave, and a priest is also present in order to perform a small mass before her voyage to the port of Mogán. Once everyone is aboard the boat they all set off; obviously the vessel carrying her leads the procession followed closely by the other fishing boats and then by the rest of the recreational vessels. The police are there to ensure that this order is kept at all times and of
course to ensure the security of the parade as many try to get close to the virgin sometimes creating dangerous situations. Upon arrival at the port of Mogán the virgin is unloaded and presented to the image located there, then in a small ceremony the two images kiss each other in a symbol of respect, and is followed once more by a small religious mass. After this both “cofradias”, fishing cooperatives, offerl the visitors paella and grilled sardines as well as soft drinks. The party then begins in earnest as the boats all look for a space to drop anchor in front of beaches and coves located between the two villages and then they spend the day drinking, eating and dancing until the sun goes down. In some cases the boats party until the early hours of the morning as some are just not willing to call it a day! As far as fiestas go, El Carmen is definitely one of my favourites, the atmosphere is incredible and the devotion these fishermen and sailors have for their virgin is compared to no other. It is a party which everyone can enjoy, from the younger ones of the family to the oldest, and above all it makes a fantastic day out. By Tito Cabral

In the Spanish legal system there are many instances where it is possible to suffer unfair economic losses connected with legal rights of property or possession of the house. Regrettably, the majority of these title defects are incapable of being detected, only to materialise afterwards. Of course many of these instances can be appealed
against by Civil, and Criminal law but this legal action produces a high cost in penalty, money and time to the home owner with uncertain final results. By the Casers’ Safe Purchase Guarantee (Title Insurance) the estate agent Hardarson Investments SL/ HI-SPAIN.COM is providing their clients with a 20 year extra legal security at no extra cost. The Caser SPG/Title Insurance is based on the successful Title Insurance product already existing in the US and Great Britain. The Safe Purchase Guarantee is an exclusive added quality brand for buyers only available at some selected estate agents and not for the general public. An Estate Agent accredited with the exclusive “Safe Purchase Brand” is giving their clients much more than other estate agents when purchasing a home in Spain: a certified extra property protection guarantee for the next 20 years: • It guarantees that all the legal rights stated in the title deed will be respected. • It certifies that the property purchased fulfils all the agreed legal conditions. • It undertakes a Guaranteed Commitment of Resolution within six months. Lawyers, who are expert in real estate law, will manage the problem and if the title defect cannot be sorted out within six months, Caser Insurance Company will compensate. • Total Peace of Mind for one of your most important investments. Compensation to property buyers up to the purchase price or to a maximum of 360,000 Euros for unfair monetary losses connected with Title Deeds terms. It is underwritten by Caser Seguros, the insurer of Spanish savings banks and one of Spain’s largest residential insurance companies
The Safe Purchase Guarantee/Title Insurance has exactly the same covers and guarantees regardless of the nationality of the property owner. We always advise our customers to have at their side a good and respectable lawyer, before signing real estate contracts. Hardarson Investments’ aim is not to be the biggest, but we adamantly and most definitely want to be amongst the best. We strive to be reliable, personal and honest. We provide professional services with the utmost diligence. Do not hesitate to give us a call today. It is our pleasure to serve you as well as we possibly can. The New Canarian Police Force
In June the President of the Canarian Government, Paulino Rivero, presided over the official act of the presentation of the very first new police agents which will make up the Canarian Police Force. This presentation, which is made up of 100 men and women, are the very first members of the new Canarian Police force (GCPC), which together with the 3,400 members of the Policia Local, make up this new force destined to protect the Canarian People.
Rivero also reminded us, “That this is the beginning of a force which will reach the 1,700 agents strong and that due to the current economic crisis will take a little bit longer” than previously anticipated. This means that during the next five years we will have 300 more agents and not in 3 years as was previously planned.
The President of the Canarian Government said, ”This new police force has been created exclusively to give more and better security to the Canarian people, in addition they will

main sponsors of this international gay Fiesta. Various political personalities were invited, such as the Mayoress Mari Pino Torres, the Consejal of Urbanismo David Delgado and Jose Antonio Godoy, advisor for the Tourism Patronato of the Cabildo. They were accompanied by members of the GLAY association
including its president Michael Shaleman.
The evening started with a few words from Michael Shaleman and the Mayoress with both of them pointing out the massive success of the event, and how important this sector is to the economy of Gran Canaria, which today represents a substantial income for businesses in the south of the island. As always musical numbers and dance choreographies broke the monotony of the ceremony itself, giving all those who attended a different night out. The awards presented were to Miss Lesbian Gran Canaria - Melania Ramos from Las Palmas, Mister Gay Gran Canaria - Will Mota, who also participated in a dance number as a
member of the dance group “e-sensual” causing more than one cheer amongst both men and women. The final award was given to this year’s Drag Queen, which was very controversial as for the first time a woman as Drag Noa won. This young women from Las Palmas called Norma Brito proudly collected her prize proving that anyone can be a Drag Queen. I had a brief chat to her after the prize giving ceremony and she kindly accepted to be interviewed for the next issue of The Canary News. The total amount of money awarded was over 4000€ proving that ‘Gay Pride Maspalomas’ is not only an exceptional international event which attracts thousands, but also one of massive importance in Europe. The ceremony ended with the live singing of Jo Frances a regular attendee and participant in this event. Sparkles ended the night with their usual variety show which so much characterises them. Well done to all the winners and organisers! By Tito Cabral

Shubhraji, Vedantic Master “The easiest way to let go of the past is to surrender to the moment” Not long ago I was invited to a talk given by a very special women named Shubhraji, who originally comes from India but now resides in the U.S. and travels the word giving talks, workshops and guidance to thousands of followers of Vedantic. I am a person who does not believe in coincidence, things around us happen for a reason as we are all connected by one common energy. For me it was a very interesting meeting and came at just the right time in my life.
not, this way of life can benefit everyone as the similarities between different religions is quite evident. Shubhraji is a close disciple of the renowned Vedantic Master H.H. Swami Chinmayananda and studied with him for twenty years from the age of thirteen. Originally from India, Shubhraji teaches Vedanta, the ancient, non-dual philosophy of India, which is universal in its appeal.
Shubhraji has dedicated her life to living a spiritual life making her extremely comfortable with everything and everyone who surrounds her.
Using original Sanskrit texts such as the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads, Shubhraji lectures on numerous topics. These include Spiritual Unfoldment, The Art of Relationships, Meditation in Daily Life, Secret of Success, The Essence of Divine Love and Managing the Mind. Shubhraji brings earthy, goodhumour to her teachings.
Although she uses examples and literature related to Indian religion, she accepts as I do, that regardless of your beliefs and whether you have them or
Her students discover a deeper understanding of their nature, challenges they may face, and how to refocus their attitudes regarding life. Her talks are
inspiring and uplifting; they aim to bring one to the true Self. Shubhraji has interacted with diverse communities in the course of her spiritual work and teaches throughout the U.S., Asia, and Europe. She has conducted programs for both eastern and western audiences in various centres and academic institutions including the Harvard Business School, St. John’s College in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Ross Institute in East Hampton, New York and many others. Shubhraji also offers weekend retreats and intensive sessions which incorporate yoga asanas taught by other instructors.
For me it was a very enriching meeting, and my only regret is that it cannot happen more often as for people like myself it is very easy to get back to the daily routines and bad habits which we all pick up through our lives; basically we just have not received the training. Her packed agenda takes her to all corners of the world making her visits an exceptional and unique opportunity, so next time she is here I will let you know for those who might be interested in just listening to her. Letter to the Editor
I live on the island and after a lovely day in the mountains with friends I came back sunburnt on my face, shoulders, arms and legs. This happened even though we are already tanned and were sheltered under an umbrella or trees nearly all of the time. After my experience I thought I would like to share my unfortunate experience with your readers whether they are on holiday or live on the island about the consequences of not taking care while in the sun.
I have to write about my displeasure on a cruise I was on. It was a disaster from start to finish. I arrived at the port but the boat wasn’t ready. I had to wait an hour before it set sail, and could then have swum faster. The Captain dropped anchor far shorter than our destination, there was no banana boat as promised, no music and no water or sun protection on board, and people were going down with heat exhaustion (I am medically trained with the British Army so know what I am talking about). No assistance was offered by the Capitan and when I asked to meet the owner of the boat I was told he doesn’t speak to English c**p.
At this time of the year the sun is at its strongest, and even if you live here and have a tan you can get caught out and burn. With the UV rays very high at this time of the year you can get sunburnt even though it is cloudy, or you have light clothes on, or like us you were sheltering under an umbrella, and I would recommend that if you are out and about in the sun to apply suntan lotion to all exposed parts like the tops of your feet, neck and shoulders, face and chest.
I wish to make a formal complaint against the company which is Sailcat of Arguineguin. A representative of a pub in Puerto Rico who sold us the cruise refused to meet us, and as stated earlier if it wasn’t for my medical knowledge people could have been seriously injured. My holiday on Gran Canaria was excellent but this incident tarnished my holiday and reflects badly on the resorts’ reputation.
Make sure you buy a good quality sun tan lotion, use a factor that is correct for your skin and apply it regularly, especially if you are in and out of the pool or sea. If you have any concerns seek advice from the local pharmacy which is free, or see a doctor. Always carry something that can cover exposed skin when you are out even if you have applied suntan lotion. We who live on the island are blessed with this lovely weather, but we can get a bit blasé about its effects. Best to be safe than sorry. Amanda Moffat Thank you for your common sense advice – residents and holidaymakers please take note. Ed Dear Sir, Congratulations Spain on wining the FIFA World Cup finals. Well played, the Spanish team after losing the first match to Switzerland. Spain proved that they were indeed the tournament favourites. I am a football fan from Muscat, Oman and enjoyed the performances of Spain. My interest in your nation has deepened after the World Cup. I would now like to collect used postal stamps of Spain and other nations. So dear friends, in case you are discarding the envelopes of your letters, I would appreciate if you could kindly post your used stamps to me. My details are: Sunil P.O. Box 3112, PC 112 Ruwi, Muscat, Oman. email: sunildcruz@yahoo.com Thanking you, Kind regards, Sunil D’Cruz Nice to know The Canary News is being read in many parts of the world; it really does give a different meaning to the phrase ‘The Canary News reaches parts other newspapers don’t reach’! Your help in this matter is much appreciated. Sir, I have the honour to be your obedient servant, Sgt S Young, RADC When we look at what our troops are doing for us, it is with immense regret that these incidents are still happening here on our island. The pub who sold the cruise know who they are – shame on you for not having the guts to meet up and listen to Sgt Young. Why are we receiving so many of these letters and emails? Sailcat it’s up to you to respond – perhaps you have valid reasons? Ed. Dear Sir, It was with great relief that one of the main through roads on Avenida Tirajana has been re-surfaced and the parking lines and zebra crossings painted again. It is a particular ‘bug-bear’ of mine that so many of the roads down here in the south are so badly worn that noone can read the signs on the road, or decipher where the crossings are. What I also don’t understand is why cars are allowed to park so close to pedestrian crossings as it is quite dangerous when people have to peer around vans and lorries to see if the road is clear. Let us hope this is the start of all the roads being upgraded to the standard as the one on Avenida Tirajana. Best regards, Steve. Yes, we did notice the vast improvement it is has made on Tirajana. You may also recall that last year we published an article about the same subject you mention concerning pedestrian crossings, where parents were complaining in Puerto Rico about vehicles parked too close and so obscuring view. Ed
We know the world cup may seem just a distant memory to many of us now, or maybe not, judging by the parties still going on where I live, but a memory which made a real impact on me was the media coverage of the extreme poverty facing many South Africans. It was great that South Africa had been chosen for the event, with many millions being spent on upgrading the areas where the games were to be held. However, how much of the supporters and tourists’ money actually made its’ way into the so-called homes of this povertystricken nation? The photos of tiny children, some as young as 18 months old, crawling around the rubbish tips in search of food; parents and their offspring of all ages collecting the rubbish left by the visitors in the form of plastic bottles, tins, scrap metal in order to sell for a few cents. Images which stay with many of us,whilst the rich become richer and the poor barely managing to survive. And yet we also saw the happy smiling faces of children pretending to be competing in the games , who don’t know any better. Maybe it’s this we should remember as we bemoan our ‘lot in life’ and perhaps we should take a leaf out of their book. In edition 24 of The Canary News, we asked for information on British charities here on Gran Canaria who could use some help from Matthew Vickers, our British Consul. The response we received was very poor with just one email from a gentleman who told us about the churches’ support. However they still didn’t seem to include any ‘real’ British run charities as outlined in our previous article. Matthew has not given up, and is now looking to organise a charity day, possibly in November, and has asked The Canary News for help once again. We would like to ask any businesses if they would be willing to sponsor such an event; either with a cash donation or any other form of sponsorship, with the proceeds going to the charity of his choice. He is also willing to assist in personal appearances at charity events, and will be talking to the various Spanish authorities to ask for their assistance.e is A sponsored walk could be an idea, which Matthew is thinking about, or how about something more fun, like a pie-eating competition, or egg and spoon race – parents and children as partners, the possibilities are endless, so readers get your thinking caps on and put forward your suggestions. We could include a children’s section, for the best drawing on the day – parents not allowed to submit their own! Matthew is just so passionate about Gran Canaria and really wants to help us, so don’t let him down, remember the saying ‘use it, or lose it’. It goes without saying that The Canary News will fully support this initiative with free PR for the businesses involved in the event. And finally, do you think that the weather here on Gran Canaria is changing? This year I have noticed a real difference compared to last year. Speaking to our Canarian neighbours, and reading various articles on climate change, I must agree that this year the climate has tended towards a more tropical style of temperature. The nights are damper with a real jungle feel and smell in the early morning. Cars are covered with early morning dew – not really known in the past, and we have already had more than our fair share of ‘Kalimas’ and ‘Siroccos’ this year. Have you noticed a difference? Editor

Make More of Your Money With the World Cup behind us and Paul the octopus showing once again his psychic powers wouldn’t it be wonderful if he could apply his predictions to the currency markets!! Every trading day the equivalent of about $3 trillion US Dollars is exchanged on the global markets and can you imagine how much money would be made if Paul managed to predict when to buy and sell, maybe some western governmentt should look to sign him up as a consultant or should the FA sign him up to support Mr. Capello. As we know the world changed back in October 2009 with the Global debt crisis and had a major impact upon us all and the amount of money we have in our pockets for changing our pounds into euros. Good news however is that when we return to visit family and friends in the UK our euros go a little further than previously which means we can treat our loved ones So where are we going? Of late the IMF has been less optimistic about the UK economy and since the recent highs against the euro of c 1.24 the pound has once again started to weaken leaving us a little poorer when we receive our pensions or transfer funds from the UK to Spain. The IMF (International Monetary Fund) believes the recent measures introduced by the last Budget in the UK will result in slower growth for the remainder of this year and probably next year. Unfortunately to support this, the recent trade figures released in the UK were also damaging to the pound as the deficit widened to more than £8 billion while the goods and services sector registered a shortfall of £4.5 billion. Both figures seem difficult to relate to when all we want is more euros for our pound and to help us enjoy our time in the sun. So what can you do? A good starting point is to review how you currently transfer your money to your Spanish

Seven of the 91 European banks that underwent stress tests have failed the health checks, the Committee of European Banking Supervisors (CEBS) has said. They include five Spanish banks - Diada, Espiga, Banca Civica, Unnim and Cajasur. The other two were Germany’s Hypo Real Estate and Greece’s ATEbank. The tests assessed banks’ ability to survive future economic shocks. The seven banks would need a total of 3.5bn euros (£3bn) of new capital to meet the standards required, CEBS said. The stress tests were conducted on a bank-by-bank basis, in a move designed to reassure investors over the health of Europe’s financial sectors. The most severe test looked at an adverse scenario, assuming a “double-dip” recession over the next two years, as well as a sovereign debt shock - some kind of financial crisis for European governments such as Greece. Understanding Early Sexual Development To parents of infants and toddlers, their children’s sexual development may seem a long way off. But actually, sexual development begins in a child’s very first years. Infants, toddlers, Pre-schoolers, and even young school-aged children develop an emotional and physical foundation for sexuality in many subtle ways as they grow.
belly. If this satisfies your child, you might not need to provide additional information about how the baby is actually made until later. Playing doctor At this stage, children tend to be curious not only about their own bodies, but about others’ too. If you find your Pre-schooler playing doctor with another child around the same age, it’s important not to overreact — to them it’s just an innocent game (of course, if an older child or adult is involved, your concern would be legitimate). Calmly ask your child to get dressed and distract him or her with a toy or game. You may want to take this as a clue that your child is curious about the body, and facilitate learning about it in some other way, like a children’s book on the subject that’s geared to Preschoolers.
Just as they reach important physical and emotional milestones, like learning to walk or learning to recognize mum or dad, young children hit important milestones in how they recognize, experience, and feel about their bodies, and how they form attachments to others. The attachments established in these early years help set the stage for bonding and intimacy down the line. By understanding how your children grow and learn, you can play an important role in fostering their emotional and physical health. Infants and Toddlers Babies’ earliest emotional attachments are formed with their parents through physical contact that expresses their love. Being held and touched, kissed and hugged, snuggled and tickled allows babies to experience comforting, positive physical sensations associated with being loved. The unique type of physical intimacy and emotional attachment between parent and infant can be the early foundation of more mature forms of physical intimacy and love that develop later as part of mature sexuality. My body Many parents have called their doctors expressing concern because their children touch their genitals during diaper changes or their baby boys have frequent erections. They’re reassured that these behaviours are perfectly normal and told that even the youngest children naturally explore their bodies. And many children, especially toddlers, enjoy being naked. How you react — your voice, the words you use, your facial expressions — is one of your child’s first lessons in sexuality. By not responding with anger, surprise, or disapproving words, you teach your child that this curiosity about his or her body is a normal part of life. Gender awareness By aged 2 or 3, a child starts to develop a sense of being a male or female. This awareness is called gender identity. A child of this age starts to understand the difference between boys and girls, and can identify himself or herself as one or the other. Some people think gender identity is biologically determined and some say it’s a product of a child’s environment. Most likely, though, it’s a combination of both. And at this age children begin to associate certain behaviours, called gender roles, with being male or female. Gender roles are a product of our culture. What is masculine? What is feminine? How do boys and men behave? How do girls and women behave? As you decide what you want to teach your children about gender roles, be aware of the messages they get both in and out of the home. Pre-school (Ages 3 to 5) By Pre-school, most children have developed a strong sense of being a boy or girl, and continue to explore their bodies even more purposefully. It’s not a good idea to scold them when they touch themselves — this will only prompt a sense of guilt and shame. Parents may, however, want to explain that even though it feels good, touching should be done in private — Pre-schoolers are old enough to understand that some things are not meant to be public. They’re also old enough to understand that no one — not even family members or other people they trust — should ever touch them in a way that feels uncomfortable. Your Pre-schooler will continue to learn important sexual attitudes from you — from how you react to people of the opposite sex to how you feel about nudity.
Endless questions As children become curious about everything, it’s common for Pre-schoolers to pose questions to their parents like “Where do babies come from?” or “Why doesn’t my sister have a penis?” When you get questions like these, try to answer as honestly and matter-of-factly as possible. Answers like “The stork brought you” not only dismiss a child’s curiosity, but also make you look less credible when your child actually finds out the truth (and he or she may then be less likely to come to you with questions in the future). Find out exactly what your child wants to know and then answer the specific question — there’s no need to go into elaborate detail when it might not be necessary. For example, you might say that a man and woman can make a baby and that the baby grows inside the woman’s
Pre-school “boyfriends” and “girlfriends” Some parents of Pre-schoolers are alarmed when they hear their children talk about a boyfriend or girlfriend. If your youngster says this, remember that children don’t attach the same meanings to the word that adults do. Most experts agree that it’s best to react to this kind of news in a neutral way — don’t encourage the behaviour, but don’t express concern either. By being open to your young child’s questions about bodies, babies, love, and sex, you set the stage for continued conversations and openness when puberty begins. Welcoming the questions about your child’s changing body and sexual issues — and not treating them as dirty or embarrassing subjects — will help foster a healthy sense of self-acceptance in your child. It also makes it more likely your child will use you as a resource for information and guidance.

Our Football Heroes!
to be lacking finishing with goal scoring as our final results every time except one, 1-0.
It’s not every day that a reporter has the privilege of writing an article about an event that has created such passion and joy to him, but today that day came for me as last 11th July the Spanish national football team was proclaimed World Cup Champions for the very first time in history.
In the meantime other teams were scoring as many 7 as was the case with Portugal, or 4 as Germany and Argentina did, which only increased the excitement of the competition, as all Spaniards were keenly following every move to see which team we would play next. You have to understand that Spain had never qualified from the quarter finals of any world cup, and I must admit that seeing other teams score these great number of goals was starting to create doubts in me and many other followers.
Since then Spain has managed to shine in every game played and even creating respect within those teams who, historically, have always been top of all the charts, Italy, Germany and even England, and managing to occupy the first position on the FIFA World Rating followed by Brazil.
At last our national team was at the top of its’ football peak and finally all Spaniards could dream the real possibility of becoming world cup champions. We had a solid team which played some of the best football in the world and other historically strong teams were not particularly shining, we believed! However in our first game against Switzerland Spain lost 0-1 and for a moment Spain held their hands to their head and said “Here we go again!”, history was repeating itself and it seemed we would not get past the quarter finals............ again! Fortunately the loss of that game seemed to serve as a wakeup call to our lads, telling them that no team was easy and that if they relaxed they would blow their chances of winning the cup. From then onwards the Spanish games only got better, although they seemed
lorries, and even small prams flocked in thousands to celebrate the victory as one. Flags waved everywhere, red t-shirts with our national colours flooded the streets and the chanting of “Campeones” was only slightly quietened by the horns of all the cars. I’m pretty sure a lot of people did not make it to work the next day! I also sure that hangovers were the primary feeling on the morning of Monday, but what I am definitely sure about is that we were all feeling very proud to be Spanish and for a while we forgot all our problems and came together as one nation. Viva Espana! By ‘a very happy and proud’ Tito Cabral
As a proud Spaniard I suffered and enjoyed the World Cup like no other, I am also a keen football supporter who enjoys a good game and therefore the World Cup is something I always look forward to.
The difference for the first time, was that in this World cup in particular, all Spaniards actually believed we could win it. In the past all have had the hope that we could win but deep down we have always known that our team was just not good enough. Thankfully two years ago Luis Aragones put together a team of very young and keen sportsmen who had the quality and strength to beat any team; this they did in the Euro cup, 2008 giving Sapain the glory that we have so much desired.

These fears were only increased by the fact that we were to play Germany in the semi finals; a team which had proven exceptionally strong and powerful against other great teams and were anxious for vengeance after losing the Euro Cup final against us 2 years earlier. To our surprise and joy the Spanish side were simply sublime, eliminating completely the German side from the game and giving the Spanish people for the first time in history the possibility of a dream coming true when we qualified for the world cup final against Holland.
People around the country did not speak of anything else, football and our national team was on the tongues of everyone, even those who don’t like the sport. The 11th of July from 19.30 hours the country was paralysed during which time history for our country would be written. For us the fact of being in the final was already an historic achievement, thousands of people even tried to get to South Africa in order to see this event live. I recall a friend of mine calling me to say that we were going but unfortunately I did not have the 3000€ necessary for the trip. All of us made plans to watch the game with our families and friends or even in massive public gatherings like the ones organized by the big cities who provided giant screens for everyone to watch it together. Even those who had to work managed to somehow or other keep one eye on the game or listening to it through the radio. The game was nerve racking with every minute that went by and the tension grew, especially considering that no goals were scored. Holland tried to break our game with a toughness which today we feel the referee did not punish enough, but during the extra time and with only five minutes to the end Andres Iniesta, FC Barcelona player, shot a magnificent kick and nailed the ball on the back of the Dutch net causing a unanimous cheer in the whole of Spain and parts of the world, Spain were, with only five minutes to go, World Cup Champions. When the final whistle was blown the Spanish people took over the streets, by foot, motorbike, cars, vans,

A Brief Overview of Nina with Nina Blaafjell
Nina who was born and brought up in Norway, moved to Edinburgh in Scotland to go to University, where she spent 4 years, and then worked in the tourism industry for a time. It was in 1993 that Nina discovered a new passion – diving, so she started working part time for a dive centre in Scotland.
The second is simply do you take this man/woman standing here as your husband/wife ? The bride and groom answer with a simple yes. This is followed by songs, psalms and a reading before the bride and groom lead the guests out of the church. Traditionally the bride and groom at a Norwegian weddings would wear the Norwegian national dress called Bunad. The bunad is heavily embroidered and the colours and embroidery varies depending on which region in Norway you come from. Although many Norwegian still wear the Bunad to get married it is now more common for the bride to wear a white dress as my friend did. The groom belonging to the Norwegian Navy and working onboard the Royal Yacht wore his uniform. However, suits and morning suits are also common attire for the groom. As in Britain the wedding party then moves on to the location chosen for the wedding reception. As my friends’ new husband works on board the Norwegian Royal Yacht, the bride and groom and some of the wedding party travelled to the reception by boat.
As you can imagine the waters of Scotland are a good deal colder than here on Gran Canaria, so in 1994 Nina and partner Kevin took the plunge and decided to move to Gran Canaria and open their own diving school. Based in the Europa Commercial Centre, Puerto Rico the dive centre runs diving courses and organised excursions for qualified divers.
The boat in question is called Stjernen (star) and used to belong to the royal family. On their arrival they were greeted at the dock of Eiken Pensjonat, which was the setting for the reception. The champagne was opened using a sabre and the newly weds were toasted by their guests.
In addition to the diving and also writing her articles for The canary News, Nina is a volunteer for the food project in Arguineguin and one evening a week helps to distribute food to those who are unable to collect it themselves.
A Norwegian Wedding
The actual ceremony starts much the same as the British one with those present standing as the bride enters the church. The vows are simple and there are two versions. The first is similar to the British and translates as will you promise to love and cherish each other until death do you part.
Once the main course has been served, it’s time for speeches. It is common at Norwegian weddings to have a Toastmaster to co-ordinate the events. This is partly due to the fact that many of the speeches are given so the Toastmaster dictates the order, as well as saying a few words themselves. In addition to the speeches given by the father of the bride, the groom and the best man, in Norway it is common to have a best woman who also gives a speech. The bride also often gives a speech, which was the case at this wedding. Speeches are also be given by other relatives and friends so dinner tends to take quite a while! During dinner another tradition is that guests will start knocking their glasses with a knife and everyone else joins in. This means that the bride and groom have to get up on their chairs and kiss, this happens repeatedly throughout the reception. After dinner, coffee is served with the all important liqueur that Norwegians favour. The first dance by the bride and groom follows and the guests join in, but before the reception ends it is common to serve food again before the guests leave.
Well done Nina!
Regular readers will have picked up on the fact that I was in Norway last week. The reason for the visit was the wedding of a close friend. The wedding itself took place at Lovøy kapell, which is a stone chapel dating between 1223 – 1398. The chapel was restored in 1950 and is now a popular location for weddings, and is located outside the Norwegian town of Horten.
sauce for steak in Norway. Dessert was a selection of cakes in addition to the wedding cake itself.
Dinner was served in a marquee, and food at Norwegian weddings can vary, but tradition dictates that the main course is always served twice with a break in between, so great if you have a good appetite! At this wedding the main course was grilled fillet steak or chicken with potatoes and a choice of pepper or bérnaise sauce. Bernaise sauce is a particularly popular
This is referred to as ”night food” and is often soup or a traditional Norwegian dish called Lapskaus. This is usually made from leftovers and can take the form of soup or stew. I would like to take the opportunity to wish the bride and groom, Mina & Dag Henrik Dahlmo, all the best for the future. By Nina Blaafjell

Keeping in Touch
Are you good at keeping in touch with the folks back home? I mean to, but somehow other things just seem to get in the way and time goes so quickly over here. Thank goodness for electronic communication. A quick call or message now and again says it all, or does it? How do you keep in touch with the folks back home? Email, text messages, telephone, Twitter, Facebook and Skype maybe? I wonder how many of us actually write letters to our loved ones and friends nowadays?
developmental benefits of letter writing. Maybe they are just over-reacting and creating a news story? However, if we think about it, handwritten letters do seem much more personal than electronic communication. Maybe it is because by going to the trouble of physically committing words to paper, going to the post office to buy a stamp and posting a letter.
Old habits die hard and, as an ex-teacher, I find it hard to resist reading the results of current educational research. One recent survey of 1200 seven- to fourteen-year-olds conducted for the children’s charity, World Vision, surprised me. The survey discovered that one in five children had never received a handwritten letter. A quarter of children surveyed had not written a letter in the last year and 43% had not received one. With all of us increasingly relying on email and social networking sites to communicate, the research found that a tenth of children had never written a letter themselves. Teachers and experts said that they feared young people were missing out on the pleasures and
The child gains too. The very effort of writing is a real one. Painstakingly manoeuvring the pencil or pen across the page, thinking of the best words to convey a message, and struggling with spelling and punctuation. Maybe it is an effort worth making, because it is only through practice that we become truly literate – and the experts tell us that literacy is the hallmark of human civilisation. Now, there’s a really big thought for us to ponder over our gin and tonics! So what has happened to all those letters from grandparents that I certainly remember? A letter at Christmas or birthday would often include the added bonus of a postal order too. Do you remember the excitement of opening those? Perhaps the letter even had one of the new definitive stamps stuck on if we were really lucky. Such simple pleasures!
Yes, I do know that queuing for a stamp at the Correos in Spain can push us towards breaking point! However, when we write a letter to someone we care about we show our investment of time and effort in a relationship. I guess that is why we tend to hang on to personal letters as keepsakes. I still have some letters written to me as a child by my grandfather and my favourite aunt.
The experts say that if we care about real relationships, we should invest in real communication, not just the quick fix of a greetings card, text or email. Hmm, maybe just for today I’m going to put away my beloved Mac laptop and write real letters to my nephews and nieces. Ah, would that mean a morning queuing at the Correos? Well, maybe not today. © Barrie Mahoney

Spanish Lesson like miércoles need learning separately, repeating each syllable slowly and pushing down where the accent tells us.
Lesson 22
Days like this….
Last issue we looked at los números (numbers) and how to pronounce them, in conjunction with the months and special dates. I´d like to continue this theme with los dias de la semana - the days of the week: lunes [LOOH-ness] Monday martes [MAR-tess] Tuesday miércoles [mee-AIR-coh-less] Wednesday jueves [hoo-EH-bess] Thursday viernes [bee-AIR-ness] Friday sábado [SAH-bah-doh] Saturday domingo [dom-EEN-goh] Sunday Memorise new words in matching sets – lunes and martes both have two syllables, end the same, and go together anyway. Many people know that the word luna means ‘moon’ and so a helpful memory trigger can to think of ‘new moon Monday’ for lunes, or if you know that el mar is the sea, perhaps ‘seaside Tuesday’ would help you remember martes. I think of bees buzzing in the air on Friday - viernes [bee-AIR-ness] and clean sheets on a Saturday (sábanas are sheets). Difficult-to-pronounce-words
If you want a new word to stick, use it over and over in your mind or out loud, though others learn better through writing words from memory. For example, make up sentences or questions with the word miércoles in: ¿Cuál es el día entre martes y jueves? (which is the day between Tuesday and Thursday?) Es miércoles (it´s Wednesday). ¿Qué haces los miércoles normalmente? (what do you do on Wednesdays normally) etc. As you can see, days of the week, like months and nationalities do NOT take capital letters in Spanish, though countries (Inglaterra, España, Las Islas Canarias) and other place names do. Note also that the Spanish never say ‘on’ with days of the week, just ‘the’ (el or los). Your personalised dictionary I encourage my students to build up their own categorized lists of useful new words within a notepad that has four clearly marked sections. Keep Spanish to one side of the page and English translations to the other so you can learn by covering first one column, then the other. And the categories are… 1) los nombres o las cosas (nouns or things). Within this section it´s even easier to find and learn words if you include subheadings for foods (los alimentos/ la comida), things you´d find in a house, clothes (la ropa) and parts of the body (el cuerpo) etc.
2) los adjetivos (adjectives or words that describe things). Here you have four columns and use the middle two to write opposites, with the English translation either side. For instance, we learn grande with pequeño [peh-KEN-yoh - big/small] and interesante with aburrido (interesting/boring). If you can´t remember a key adjective, maybe you can think of its opposite and say it´s not that! E.g. mi trabajo no es difícil (my job isn´t difficult) instead of mi trabajo es fácil (my job is easy). 3) los verbos/las acciones (verbs or action words). All original ‘infinitive’ verbs end in -ar, -er or –ir in Spanish, such as andar (to walk), leer [leh-AIR; to read] or escribir [ess-cri-BEER; to write]. You might want to put related words together – such as read and write – and make a note with examples if the verb is irregular in how it changes. The book Practice Makes Perfect – Complete Spanish Grammar by Gilda Nissenberg, is excellent for practicing all the verb endings, and only 3-6 euros from www.amazon.co.uk, who deliver to the Canaries. 4) Palabras útiles (useful words). If it´s not una cosa, un adjetivo o un verbo, it goes here! Examples include hay (there is/there are), siempre and nunca (always and never), a veces and muchas veces (lit: at times/many times - we’d say sometimes/often), antes y después (before and after), en (in/on), de (of/from), a (at/to), entonces [en-TON-sess - so/then], pues [poo-ESS] meaning ‘er/well…’ to buy you time while thinking, and vale [BAH-leh, okay/agreed]. Entonces, pues….hasta la próxima, ¿vale? (So, er… until next time, okay?) If you have questions about this column or want advice about learning Spanish, e-mail theresacoe@gmail.com

‘The Canarian Lawyer’ Payment in cash of the legitimate part of the Inheritance I want to make my heritage, which is basically my business, to just one of my five children because I see that he is able to continue business with chance of success. What can I do with the other children as they also claim their interest in the business and ask for dividing all in equal parts? There are many people who are owners of a small business, which could be the biggest part of their patrimony, and are interested in giving it all to one of their children. It is possible that the rest of the heritage is not enough to compensate a legitimate part to each child. The legitimate part is a third part of the whole heritage. In order to solve the problem, the Spanish Civil Code (which regulates the inheritance for Spanish citizens) allows the person to give all his patrimony or a part of it, to only one of his heirs, indicating that the legitimate part for the

others must be paid in cash to them. This part of the inheritance for the others can be reduced to the strict legitimate part (1/3). Like this, the law allows payment of the legitimate part to the others, not with goods of the heritage, but in charge of the benefit children. If there are sufficient goods in the inheritance to satisfy the legitimate claim of the other children, then it is not necessary to obligate the benefitting child to pay the legitimate part to the other heirs. In general it is done in order to avoid the division of a business. This way of payment in cash of the legitimate part is always possible, independent on how many goods are transmitted. This means that you can do it also with a property, so that the property is inscribed in the name of one of the heirs and it is not owned by several ones. The beneficiary child is not totally obliged to follow the request of the deceased person, and he can request that

his brothers are paid with goods of the heritage. It is a useful option in case that the beneficiary child has no money to pay his brothers or in case he does not want to pay his brothers with his own money. This decision of payment in cash is limited to expiration: the payment should be done in a short time to avoid any harm to the other heirs who could wait a long time in the opposite case without receiving goods from the inheritance or money in cash. In order to fix the amount to pay to the other heirs, the value of the goods of the inheritance must be calculated at the moment of liquidation. We must remember that the inheritance for foreigners in Spain, is developed according to their personal law and not under the Spanish law. We recommend you contact ourselves if you need any help in this matter. Dependence Law: won’t pay We applied for my mother for aid of the dependence law in 2007. My mother died in 2009. We have got recognition of the right and they say
that we will receive what corresponds from the date of the application until the death. We are waiting for seven months now and they tell us that we can wait now, as my mother has died. What can we do? As you have already a resolution which recognizes your mothers’ right to aid of the dependence law, you have to present a claim, without waiting any longer, to the court for contentious administrative judgments. This will enable you to enforcement the resolution and application of the corresponding interests. If you do not go to court, many years could pass without receiving anything.

Web and Computer problems? info@thecanarynews.com
Many programs allow you to create macros so that you can enter a single character or word to perform a whole series of actions. Programs like Microsoft Office allow you to record your own macro. You could use a macro to enter words or phrases that you use frequently. For example, you could record a macro that contains all the keystrokes necessary to enter your letterhead -- your name, address, a code that inserts the current date and even a graphic. Then, whenever you write a letter, you just press the macro key to automatically enter the letter header.
Q. I’m trying to open a document and it is asking me something about enabling macros. Just what is a macro, and should I enable them? A. The word macro means big or large and as related to computing probably comes from the shortened term, macroinstruction. Macros are used in programming, especially in assembler or machine language programming. This type of programming is at the lowest level, and requires many lines of code to perform a simple action. To alleviate the need to re-enter the same lines of code over and over again, a macro is created that automatically enters the specific lines when the source is compiled. Now, the programming macro is not what is being referred to in this case, but the word macro has carried over to actions that are used in many programs. A macro in this case, is a symbol, name, or key press that represents a list of commands, actions, or keystrokes.
So, why is something that appears to be so helpful the cause for a security warning? A person with malicious intent can embed a destructive macro, in a document or file, which can spread a virus on your computer. This macro may remain dormant until a certain key sequence is pressed or executed immediately when the document was opened. Macros have been used in one form or another for years but it wasn’t until Microsoft allowed macros created with Visual Basic to be used that it opened a can of worms. One especially widespread macro virus called Melissa spread in 1999 and caused many problems. Melissa arrived as an attachment to an e-mail note with the subject line “Important Message from .......” and body text that reads “Here is that document you asked for...don’t show anyone else ;-)”. The attachment was often named LIST.DOC. If the recipient clicked on or otherwise opened the attachment, the macro was activated and the virus file was entered into the computer’s memory.
The virus then created an email using the Visual Basic code, read the first 50 names in your Address Book, and sent each of them the same e-mail with virus attachment that caused this particular infection. Fortunately, this particular virus only worked with Outlook and not other email programs or its effect would have been much worse. In some less frequent of cases when a certain criteria was met, this phrase was inserted at the cursor location. “Twenty-two points, plus triple-word score, plus fifty points for using all my letters. Game’s over. I’m outta here.” The quote refers to the game of Scrabble and is taken from a Bart Simpson cartoon. To head off these kinds of macro viruses, later versions of Office and other programs were installed with the macro capabilities turned off. So, when you open a document that may contain a macro, the program asks you if you trust the sender and want to allow the macros to function. This is also why most current ISPs do not allow the sending of documents as attachments to emails. Fortunately, these preventative measures had all but eliminated the macro virus problems. The ability to record macros has also been made more difficult to do starting with Office 2007 and carried through Office 2010. This feature is turned off by default, and to record a macro the Developer tab in the ribbon has to be turned on.

Visiting the Mainland Having just returned from a lovely relaxing holiday with my family on the mainland of Spain, I felt it would be nice to share with our readers just a few observations and events we enjoyed whilst I was there.
in one of the five star hotels and causing havoc during their brief spell. The restaurants are typically tourist-style with the odd exception if you know where to go. It’s packed in July and August with many of the wealthier Spanish from Madrid choosing to spend their summer break in their holiday homes.
We normally take a quick flight to Madrid, stay a couple of days, and then hire a car stopping at various places down the coast whilst visiting friends.
The port area was busy with all manner of motor cruises, yachts and other crafts trying to ‘beat the bridge’ as it closes for road traffic to take its’ turn.
This time however, we decided to make a real journey of it and take the ferry from Las Palmas to Cadiz and drive northwards along the coast. It’s a two day journey so we booked a cabin, not really expecting it to be very much, but were pleasantly surprised when we arrived at the dock as the ship looked like a ‘mini’ cruise liner. Once on board we left our overnight bags in the cabin and decided to explore the decks. It really was quite an eye
I love La Manga, although in the winter months it can be very quiet.

seas, the Mar Menor on one side and the Mediterranean on the other. It is a strange feeling to drive down the one road which leads in and out of it, having the ‘sea’ on both sides. We stayed in my brothers’ apartment, which is right on the beach and soon settled in for the night. It was glorious to go to sleep with the sound of the waves crashing onto the beach, and in the morning we breakfasted in one of the nearby cafes, a good English breakfast was the order of the day. Just relaxing on the beach, catching up on my reading – absolutely glorious, just what is needed to recharge your batteries. La Manga is not cheap – you may recall that the England football team used to train here during summer, staying
opener as besides a very nice a la carte restaurant, there was also a self service cafe, with a more than adequate ‘menu del dia’ – included in the price of the journey. Towards the top of the ship was a swimming pool area surrounded by sun loungers, tables and chairs and a bar, and just a short walk further along were kennels for passengers travelling with their pets. There was plenty of seating areas and television lounges, so the two day journey passed quickly and in comfort. On arrival in Cadiz we quickly set off along the main coastal road heading towards the motorway which bypasses Malaga then onto the Costa de Almeria. I wasn’t too interested in stopping in Marbella or Puerto Banus as I have visited the Costa del Sol many, many times in the past.
dry and barren landscape with the odd new complexes dotted about. The tremendous downturn in Spain’s property boom was clearly in evidence as we drove passed many unfinished villas and apartment blocks – a sad sight indeed. We stopped a few times along the motorway to stretch our legs and grab a quick snack – motorway fare so nothing special and expensive as you would expect it to be. I was anxious to arrive at our first stop in La Manga; a unique resort as it stretches between two
After a few days of relaxation we made our way up the Costa Blanca, passing the huge new complexes and golf courses, which this coast is famous for, until we arrived at our next stop in VillaMartin. This coastal resort is one of the oldest on the coast and instead of it showing signs of wear and tear, the local council of Orihuela has invested considerable sums of money in facelifts for the shopping complexes. The main square when I last visited, looked tired and old, and yet here it was in front of me with a smart new look about it. I am always interested to see what kind of prices properties are selling for, so we browsed around a couple of estate agency windows and saw a marked difference in the prices between there and here on Gran Canaria. Ok a lot of the properties are owned by people who are desperate to sell, having bought at grossly inflated prices when the boom was in full flow. The average reduction was around 100,000 euros for a fairly luxurious villa, either with or without its’ own pool, and most came fully furnished.

my benefit, together with a myriad of sons, daughters, cousins, friends, nieces, nephews, barking dogs, scruffy cats, all making noises in decibels which would have the police close down a local bar! Have I painted the picture! But a more delightful, welcoming and warm family I have yet to meet. Although fairly poor financially, they are rich in the more important areas. There must have been at least 50 of us crowded around a long wooden table, tapas dishes galore and more arriving every minute. Wine and beer flowed; although the women seemed to be strictly limited to two glasses watered down with ‘casera’ apart from the foreigners of course, whose women seemed able to consume copious amounts, according to the Spanish men! The paella dish was put on, rice washed, chicken, rabbit and their favourite regional delicacy, snails was all added, left to cook slowly until the bottom became crisp and slightly blackened – again something peculiar to this area. Generally speaking, I would say the prices are about 50% cheaper than here. A few miles further along the coast is Torrevieja, which was once a tiny little fishing village, then it became a real tourist town for ex pats, gaining a reputation for cheap properties, typical Brit bars and noisy crowded streets teeming with traffic. So what was this in front of me? We parked the car at the marina and walked towards the now unfamiliar pedestrian walkways. Gone were the queues of traffic frantically trying to weave their way through the one way system, and instead the whole town centre had been paved, planted with palm trees and lovely seating areas.
Although this service is aimed mainly at the British ex pat, the reception desk is staffed by people who speak several languages.
find anywhere on GC where it is sold fresh and firm as it should be. My friend thought it was hilarious as I drooled over a simple salad ingredient!
Because the local council has identified the real investment the British have made towards their economy they allowed a member of the British ex pat community to become part of their council team, and to put forward the views and requests of their own.
Our holiday nearing its’ end, we were all invited by Spanish neighbours to their informal Sunday get together; family and friends welcome!
We travelled northwards and ended our journey further inland, staying with our friends in the country. Theirs is a lovely villa, complete with guest apartment, swimming pool and outdoor barbecue area, such a contrast from the coast. Each morning you awoke to the sound of the hens clucking for their breakfast, dogs running around like mad things, and the cats doing what they do best lazing around. We were to spend the next week here amidst the vineyards with a spectacular backdrop of lush green mountains. It was very hot during the day, but soon cooled as night fell.
Smart new shops had opened everywhere, worn out looking buildings had received sympathetic facelifts, and to crown it all a really useful council building had just opened its’ doors to ‘foreigners’ who need assistance settling into the country.
Days were spent catching up on our lives, laying around the pool and just generally ‘chilling out’. We shopped at the local markets for the freshest fruit and vegetables, and to my complete delight I had a huge choice of my favourite salad ingredient – lettuce. Yes I did say lettuce, I love my lollo rosso, sheeps head, raddichio etc. and cannot seem to
It was only a few hundred yards away from our friends’ villa so off we set on foot each vowing we would stay a polite half hour and then make our excuses. Of course we knew Antonio and his family from past years, and although our British friends get by with sign language and ‘Spanglish’ Antonio knows I speak Spanish and always makes a beeline for me, asking me to translate what he wants to say. He is joined by ‘mamma’ a dear old lady in her late eighties, who speaks only Andalucian dialect, his wife Gloria, who tries to speak slightly slower for
My head starting throbbing from the increasing requests to translate for Antonio and his family, not to mention the extremely strong red wine which seemed to miraculously keep my glass filled to the brim. This is Spain, this is what the Spanish families are really about, the caring, the sharing, despite the fact they have so little compared to ourselves. It’s quite a humbling experience when you know that the likes of Antonio and his family are working shorter hours at the factory, thus earning less, yet still retain the dignity and generosity to share their Sunday mealtime with ‘those strange English’ people. And so the holiday finally ended, on a note of gratitude to our friends both English and Spanish who reminded me of what is truly important in life. By Debbie Wenn

Sponsored by bay though tonight or swear I will be molested, they say I am a babe magnet and who am I to disagree.. I mean I dated Cilla Black once, Nnyesss, well it’s better than not at all isn’t it? To be honest tonight I simply want to fall in love with what’s on my plate because let me tell you I am starrrrrrving! The Yumbo Centre is the party capital of the world and they all love me so soooo much, except some of the restaurateurs of course who snarl at me if they suspect I am indeed THE Mr. Spit. I discretely glance over my shoulder at them and pout my lips, closing my right eye a little in suspicion as I walk pass these food pits of horrors which I daren’t enter without smelling salts and a sick bag!

It is another perfect day in Gran Canaria and the sea is calm and moist (well it’s not going to be calm and dry is it? Or I’d be talking about the sand dunes). So the sea is indeed calm and moist… and there are fish, old pirate ship wrecks and miles upon miles of carefully preserved history buried under the moist sea bed. The fit surfers were paddling, the snorklers were snorkling and the people on the nudist beach were…… well um yes. Sea life continues to be as busy as ever. An enormous white yacht is floating off the coast of Maspalomas, it is moving up and down along the gentle waves, yes the waves were indeed gentle, it’s a big one dare I say it – so very very big. And there seems to be movement onboard, I can hear Bulgarian music and there appears to be people dressed as Bulgarian Gods with big leaves and things, lots of gold, ivy and
hand stitched sandals, bowls of fruit and golden jugs filled with fine Bulgarian wines. It surely can’t be! No it simply can’t be! It is it is! It’s Simon Spit! What’s he doing on a boat like that, it’s not allowed, simply impossible “Grapes more grapes” I said to the 7ft gorgeous giants fanning me with enormous palm leaves. Nnnyyesss I bet you’re wondering what I’m doing dressed like this on this fine vessel, being pampered like Bulgarian royalty on a bed of enormous silk cushions and pillows? Nnnyeesss it’s a hard life being friends with the rich and famous, we tend to get given gifts and treats occasionally… and who am I to refuse such “more grapes more grapes!” marvellous “another one” wonderful hospitality! Today has been simply delicious and simply delightful. Where else would you get treated like Bulgarian royalty on Gran Canaria? Haha! They say the beach of Maspalomas has shrunk, didn’t they read the label? Do not tumble dry! Back on dry land and Mavis was waiting patiently to give me a lift home, isn’t she a super star? You wouldn’t have thought a woman of her age would have legs strong enough would you? Strong as an ox my Mavis! I shall soon need to buy her a new pair of hiking boots. Oh it has been such a lovely day and I am so overjoyed to be me! And it’s that special time again, nnnyeessss it’s time for some belly filling! Let’s get that belly filled shall we? Nyess.. But where will the cookie crumb path take us today? Well I shall let you into a secret (hope no one’s listening), there is one more place on Gran Canaria you can get treated like Bulgarian royalty and it’s not out at sea but right in the heart of it all in the Yumbo Centre at Taberna Bulgaria 3! Or at least I do so very much hope so, can’t possibly imagine what it would be like to end my fabulous Bulgarian themed day with my head down
a pot hole shouting “I won’t be long luvvies, just a minute whilst I just throw up!” and swearing that I hadn’t eaten carrots since last week. I did throw up over a cactus once, the good thing was the cats had plenty to tuck into for nearly a month! Oh the joys of being a food critique! I must sing for joy and dance my way to parade!! Lalalalala…. Anyway back to getting ready. Oh decisions glorious decisions, why oh why do I have to make such big
decisions? WHHYY! I thought girls were the ones who always have problems picking their clothes! I did eventually unravel the most dazzling spectacular number for tonight’s meal time madness (my wardrobe looked like a disaster zone afterwards though), a wonderful Spanish bull fighter gold embroidered jacket with shoulder pads and a tight fitting pair of elasticised trousers so I could show off my fabulous long lovely legs! We shall have to keep the girls at
I made my way towards the Bulgarian eatery in true glory, my arms open wide as I relished every step of the way there. I was welcomed in by the friendly waiter and sat down in a lovely spot inside where I felt more Bulgarian. The walls were decorated with traditional Bulgarian costumes and there was a huge water well thing in the middle of the restaurant which created this atmospheric, arty and glorious experience that we really were in the great old realms of the Bulgarian nation. They had the windows made teenie weenie on purpose so people eating their delicious food weren’t put off by the sound of karaoke next door. The inside of this eatery felt like you had stepped out of the Yumbo Centre completely, it’s a clever little place! It didn’t feel fake, the waiter I mean, he wasn’t fake. He was a genuine man and gave me that feeling I was genuinely welcome which really makes a huge difference when dining at a restaurant. He took my order of Bulgarian Beer and Agua Sin Gas and left me to peruse the fabulous looking menu with my very own eyes. The menu offered extraordinary food such as Feta Cheese dishes, casseroles, gigantic house salads and speciality salads including Russian Salad, Moussaka, an array of wonderful looking meat dishes and grilled meats and chicken. knowledge with us so he is a great local champion to ask about things, the best place for lunch by the beach, the best this… the best that… what to do and what not to do… he knows it all and he’s got good taste too! Very willing to reveal all about Gran Canaria he was, nnnyyessss. Dessert was imminent and my chops were filling up with saliva with anticipation!
Moussaka was next in my mouth and it was perfect, there is not a word to describe it better. It was a tasty, wholesome dish made with quality fresh aubergines, tomatoes, meat and other exciting fresh and vibrant ingredients and my mouth was watering let me tell you my mouth was indeed watering!!
I had baklava made with filo pastry, chopped nuts, spices and sugar syrup, it was home made on the premises and it was fabulous! I rarely have baklava but when I do I like to truly appreciate it! Mavis had a big bowl of ice cream and a wafer, she was so hot she was fanning herself with her phone bill, I said “you’re not wearing thermals again are you, it isn’t winter you know”. So lardy dardy da! There we are! We had such a wonderful time at the Bulgarian dining table, it was so authentic I practically felt Bulgarian. I was jumping for joy and Mavis too, we drank our coffees and paid our extremely small bill, yes I did say small bill – that’s another glorious thing about this place… it’s top value for money! So come on in people and give this place a whirl you’ll love it! Restaurateurs be warned if your itch isn’t up for a scratch you may find out what it feels like to get spat by Spit.
Mavis was tucking into her meat and she seemed happy enough, it looked tender and succulent. A gulp of Bulgarian Beer, a little belch, a dab with the serviette finished that off nicely! Oh what a joy it is here!
So if it’s dirty get it clean, if it’s too fatty make it lean and if costs more than 3 courses at the Ivy in London you will either be the best restaurant in the world or get completely ripped apart by meeee, nyess, tata!
The head waiter was chatting with us in between courses, he was very friendly and very knowledgeable too! He was sharing his local

Aromatherapy
Essential oils are also believed to be absorbed through the skin. Each essential oil has different healing properties. For example, some calm while others energize. Here are some widely used essential oils and their properties:
Aromatherapy is the ancient science of healing, relaxing and energizing by the use of plants and their parts. The roots, barks, flowers, fruits, seeds and nuts play a crucial part in this science. It is one of the more popular branches of alternative medicines. The word aromatherapy is derived from two words aroma which means smell and therapy which stands for healing. Essential oils form the basis of aromatherapy. These essentials oils are the extracts of plants and their parts and form their life force. These oils are extracted by the means of steam distillation, cold expression, or fixed oil or alcohol extraction. They are highly concentrated and should not be used directly. These oils can be blended together and this blend is called synergy. The synergy is more potent than the individual oils combined How does aromatherapy massage work? The nostrils are attached to a part of the brain called the limbic system. The limbic system controls emotions and influences the nervous system and hormones, and when you inhale essential oil molecules, messages are transmitted to the limbic system and affect heart rate, stress level, blood pressure, breathing, memory, digestion, and the immune system.

Fast Food Comparison – Burger or Pizza? By Ann Mather, Celebrity Nutrition Advisor , Famouslyfit.com Well, until now, you have read nothing from me but stuff about good food, and the effect it has on your body. However, I am not unrealistic and I know that there are a lot of people out there who just cannot kick the habit of “junk food”. So I decided to do a comparison between two of the most popular types of “junk food” – the pizza and the burger and chips. Read it carefully, and decide whether you really want to keep eating either!
Burger
Saturated Fat 17.8 grams Transfat 3.4 grams Cholesterol 113 grams Sodium 2132 grams Total Carbohydrates 158.6 grams Total Protein 80.85 grams Calcium 516% of recommended daily allowance Iron 42% of recommended daily allowance Vitamin C 22% of recommended daily allowance Vitamin A 45% of recommended daily allowance Vitamin B6 22% of recommended daily allowance Vitamin B12 24% of recommended daily allowance Zinc 27% of daily allowance Potassium 35% of daily allowance
• And finally our vitamins and minerals. Well, here the Pizza wins out – it has a wider range of minerals and vitamins which contribute to the recommended daily allowance, but look at the that calcium!
So what does it mean? • Both choices are high in calories. In the case of the Pizza 62% of these are from fats, and in the case of the Burger 43% are from fats. Not the right choice of calories in either case, but I guess the burger wins on this count!
Here is what you get with a grilled burger made form 80% lean meat and 20% fat, burger bun and portion of fries: Total Calories 739 Calories from Fat 319 Total Fat 35.5 grams Saturated Fat 8 grams Transfat 1 gram Cholesterol 70 grams Sodium 598 grams Total Carbohydrates 75 grams Total Protein 29 grams Calcium 10% of recommended daily allowance Iron 27% of recommended daily allowance Vitamin C 15% of recommended daily allowance
Traditional Pizza Here is what you get from a traditional 12” pizza, with mozzarella cheese and salami: Total Calories 800 Calories from Fat 500 Total Fat 55.6 grams
• So let´s look at the fats. In the case of the Pizza there are 55.6 grams of fat. In the case of the Burger there are 35 grams of fat. Still not good at all, but again the Burger wins.
There is now so much research to prove that eating too much calcium causes calcium leaching – it takes it away from the bones. So, on that count, I might just stick with the Burger!
• Saturated fat, in any great amount, is closely associated with disease – especially heart disease. The Pizza has 18 grams, compared to the Burger with 8 grams. So again the Burger wins.
All in all, both are really poor choices and will lead to disease, illness and obesity if you eat them regularly.
• The worst kind of fat to eat is transfat and you don’t need much of it to make the difference. Here, the Pizza has 3.4 grams, and the Burger 1 gram. Again, the Burger wins. • Cholesterol is a killer, we all know that. So what do we have here? Well, the pizza has 113 grams of cholesterol – WOW! The Burger has 70. Both are very high, but the Burger wins again! • The next things to look at are the carbs. The Pizza has 158 grams compared to the Burger with 75 grams. So I guess if you are carb loading for any reason, then the Pizza would win on this count. • So then we have the protein. The pizza is simply loaded with it – 81 grams – compared to the Burger with 29 grams. So, you might think that the pizza is best, but eating too much protein at once is really bad for you – I only need 80 grams in the whole day! So again the Burger wins out… • And then we get to sodium. We all know what too much salt does to us. The Pizza has 2132 grams. Yes, that is 2132 grams! I could not believe it……but the Burger is still amazingly high with 598 grams.
If I was on that desert island, with nothing but sand and salt water, and had only the choice of the two, then I guess I would have to stick with burger and chips! But to be honest both make me feel quite ill! Enjoy your fast food

KILL THE RADICALS! Ann Mather, Celebrity Nutrition Advisor Free radicals are naturally created by the body, but this is increased by stress, poor diet and consuming or breathing in toxins. They bounce around our bodies and damage everything they touch! Killing them off is vital to health. One of the main ways to do this is to get as much Glutathione into your body - it maximizes the effect of all other anti-oxidants.
HERE IS HOW: • Eat a varied, balanced and natural diet
• Squat down, facing each other • touch the ground in a deep squat • Pushing up through the legs, jump up in the air as high as you can • Touch each other´s hand at the top of the jump • Land with soft knees and squat back down ready to go again • As you squat, keep your weight back on heels
• Avoid processed foods - full of toxic chemicals! • Get plenty of exercise • Get 15 mins of direct sunlight every day • Eat raw milk, eggs and meat • Eat lots of fresh, raw fruit and vegetable • Add curcumin to your food • Take a whey protein supplement

MIXED MESSAGES-MIXED METAPHORS Kay Owen, Comfort Corner Apparently the last Comfort Corner article “Words”, left a lot of people chuckling. So if it not be considered as “over-egging the pudding” l thought to share a few more - albeit from a slightly different angle .
difference between CAULIFLOWERS and a COLLIE DOGS …fabulous or otherwise. But don’t you just love happy endings? And finally on the art of communication – two people on quite separate wavelengths, body language replacing much of the dialogue-this, between a teacher and one of the little boys in her primary school class. She was helping him put on his boots. Even with her pulling and him pushing, the little boots just didn’t seem to want to go on. By the time the second boot was on, she had worked up quite a sweat.
Here is a “sounds like”. As the bride walked down the aisle, a loud whisper was heard from one of the guests -“ What a waist”- (obviously admiring the girl’s fine figure). Her friend, who thought the bride was marrying beneath her station, whispered back, “ A total waste if you ask me”!
She almost cried when the little boy said, “Miss, they’re on the wrong feet.”
In their teens my twins sent me a fun Mother’s Day card which clearly showed a few contradictions in speak-terms. A case of “Don’t do as I do , do as I tell you” proves how our use (or misuse) of language may give our children mixed messages, perhaps leaving them utterly confused, though with no visible scars in this case.
She looked and sure enough they were. It wasn’t any easier tugging the boots off than it had been putting them on. She managed to keep her cool as together they worked to get the boots back up this time on the right feet.
(Incidentally, I am quite sure that most of these bloopers belong to other children’s mothers, with less than half of them actually attributable to me!) The card reads:- Mother’s Day - a time to consider the absolutely ridiculous things Mums say to their kids. If you fall off that bike and break your leg, - don’t come running to me!” I do not want to hear another word out of you. - Now what have you got to say for yourself?! If I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a million times … stop exaggerating. What time do you call this? It’s eleven o’clock at night. Stop telling tales or I’ll tell your father! “I’ve only got one PAIR of hands!” Violence never solved anything- now stop fighting or I’ll bang your heads together! It is signed “ Only kidding Mum – honest.” Among things that intrigue and often bewilder foreigners
He then announced, “Miss, these aren’t my boots.”
when they first encounter the English language, are the many words which are spelled and used so very differently, whilst often sounding exactly the same. For example – doe and dough; coffin and coughing; bread and bred; to name a few. Even more confusing are words which are spelled the same, sometimes pronounced differently, and used to convey a variety of things in varying contexts. For example -The arrow was shot from the bow .The singer smiled and took a bow .The bow of ribbon is in her hair. Put the anchor in the bow. Then, just when students think they may have mastered it (unless they are absolutely clear in definition) they put pen to paper and write - ‘I court the ball’ and ‘the case was settled out of caught’! To say naught of brought, taught and quart; and the pronunciation of cough, bough and through. It’s not only the language barrier either. Some years ago I heard 2 old friends- British born and bred - getting it horribly wrong when discussing what they had seen at the local agricultural show. The conversation went something like this. Betty:-“What did you think of the CAULIS this year Jane? Weren’t they just fabulous?” ‘Fabulous’ sneered Jane, ‘You don’t know what you are talking about— they were the worst ever “. ‘Well I’m surprised at your ignorance, especially as you’re usually such an authority’ retorted Betty. Further exchanges of similar ilk followed as the argument got more and more heated and words nearly turned to blows. About to storm out ,Jane shouted, ‘Since I was grooming and showing that very breed for over 20 years I think I know a tad more about COLLIES than you do ’. Whoa, half a mo. “Sounds like one of you was in the produce tent whilst the other was at the dog judging. If so then you are both right” I ventured. We fell about laughing. Abbreviations ? There’s a considerable
She bit her lip then her tongue rather than get right in his face and scream, “Why didn’t you say so?” which she really wanted to. Once again she struggled to help him pull the ill-fitting boots off his little feet. No sooner had they got both boots off again, when he volunteered, “They’re my brother’s boots Miss. My Mum made me wear them.” Now she didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. She mustered up what little grace she had left to wrestle the boots back on his feet yet again. Exhausted, as she helped him into his coat she asked, “Now then, where are your mittens?” “I stuffed them into the toes of my boots”. Her trial starts next month……….. Kay Owen. July 2010.

Victory for Victor Fernandez & Daida Ruano points for the world championship and of course amongst these there are quite a few Canarians who stood a good chance of doing so.
The 21st PWA Gran Canarian Gran Prix Championship took place between the 6th and 9th July in the well known village of Pozo Izquierdo; a place which today attracts windsurfers from all over the world due to the magnificent conditions it has to offer. It is therefore
no surprise that for the last 21 years it has been chosen as one of the prime locations by the PWA (Professional Windsurfing Association) as part of their world circuit. Hundreds of the world’s top windsurfers could not miss the chance to gather
As Danny, our surf writer, mentioned in the previous issue, the Pozo Izquierdo competition is high on the agenda of many professionals of this sport, who wish to include this title and trophy. So with this in mind the competition was going to be fierce and the participants would need to give their all in order to win and at the same time give spectators a fantastic show. On the final day of the competition there were no surprises as to who would be in the finals; Victor Fernandez from Almeria and the young Philip Köster, battled for the first position in the men’s category, and was decided in a final tie
break, marginally giving Victor the first position. In the women’s competition the two Canaria Ruano Sisters battled for the first position with a final win by Daida, again closely followed by her sister Iballa. In both cases the winners mentioned that any one of the finalists could have taken the victory as the quality of windsurfing at this level is exceptionally good. Victor also added that in the near future young Philip will be a world champion as his breathtaking performances at such a young age is simply getting better and harder to beat. As expected the competition was hard which made the event a very competitive and spectacular show for everyone who made their way to the Pozo Izquierdo beach. Both windsurfing aficionados and curious travellers enjoy the high skills these sportsmen and women perform whilst in the water. I’m not much of a windsurfing follower but I do appreciate a good show and this was definitely one not to miss. My recommendation is that you keep an eye on future events such as this one and take yourselves down to see it, as it is well worth the trip. By Tito Cabral

Javier Medina (one of the coaches for University Surf Team and local pro) set about explaining the rules for the contest. Once done, the kids headed down to the beach. The event went incredibly well with both teams putting up great performances and a real improvement was seen in all of the children since the last Tortugas tour was held back in
April. The heats went ahead and were divided into 2 categories; softboard and short board. This was to ensure that all levels of surfing were taken into account and that everyone had fair opponents. The judges were Daniel Alcock and Javi Medina. Finally, congratulations went to Josh Haggett (Surf Canaries) and to Armando
(University Surf School) for 1st in soft board and short board respectively. The event went fantastically and history was made as the first surf contest ever to be held in Playa del Ingles because previously there had been no designated surf area here, making it legally impossible to organize such an event officially. The atmosphere was that of an exotic surf trip and everyone really enjoyed themselves. We had to have winners, but in the spirit of this particular event, the results are forgotten straight away. Tomorrow we will return to surf together and those results won’t count anymore, it is time to think about the next contest. By Danny Alcock
