Page 21 Shellac What No Chips? Owing to the very strong relationship The Canary News has with the British Consul here on the island, we were delighted to receive a call from them asking if we would like an exclusive interview with Giles Paxman – Her Majesty’s Ambassador for Spain and the Islands. Of course, it goes without saying that we immediately took up the offer and sent Managing Director, Genna D’Cruz to cover the meeting.

The meeting was held in the Hotel Santa Catalina, where last year the Ambassador was introduced to members of the Canarian government, Heads of the Armed Forces and the Police Department. As I approached the hotel, I was greeted by Matthew Vickers, British Consul, and we arranged to start our meeting a little late as the Ambassador was already in deep conversation with the President of the Spanish PPP party – an opportunity not to be missed as it was quite unexpected.

The hotel was busy as usual but we decided to have an informal chat on the comfortable terrace outside. My first question to the Ambassador was why the visit to Gran Canaria? He explained to me that as it had been nearly a year since his last visit, he was keen to keep in touch with any developments which had taken place. Giles is still based in Madrid and has settled down nicely, he told me that an Ambassadors’ job is always on the move, with an average of four to five years in a post. Continued on page 17 ...

Your Right To Vote Part 2 Residents of nationalities other than Spanish have to explicitly let the town hall know that they want to exercise their voting rights in Spain. Here’s what you need to do, according to your circumstances: If you’re not on the padrón: Visit your town hall to sign on the padrón and tell them that you also wish to vote in the upcoming elections. If you’re on the padrón but have never registered to vote in Spain:You should soon receive a letter from the Electoral Census Office. Sign the declaration on the bottom of the letter to say you would like to vote and send it back to your corresponding Office. Over 750,000 letters have already been sent out. If you’re address isn’t up to date on the padrón, you’ll need to contact the town hall to make sure you get your letter. If you’ve already registered to vote in Spain: You don’t need to re-register. Start thinking about who you want to vote for! Although there are currently more British Nationals than any other EU citizens already registered to vote, there are also more Brits than any others who are yet to do so. Recent figures show that only about half of us who are eligible to vote have registered with the Electoral Census Office. At the consulate we know that the British community get involved in their Spanish surroundings through social clubs, voluntary organisations and campaign groups. And we know of thousands of Britons who voice their concerns through online forums, society meetings and publications like this one. But this is one opportunity you really wouldn’t want to miss -the chance to have a productive voice in your local area. I’ll be making my vote count - will you? Regards, Matthew Vickers British Consul

WOMAD 2010 Reaches New Horizons The 2010 WOMAD Festival supplied the usual musical feast, full of diversity and colour.

Sunday night performances were removed by the organisers from one WOMAD festival a couple of years ago but were, thankfully, rapidly restored the following year. The fourth and final day is always significantly less-crowded and has a more relaxed atmosphere, although some of you may remember the Wailers performing to a heaving throng in 2005.

This year artists from China, Brazil, Poland, France, the USA and Senegal perfomed, as did others from WOMAD stalwart countries Cuba and Mali. Having attended five previous WOMADs in Las Palmas, I can´t remember one quite so popular with local residents and the foreign community alike. Thursday night saw the performance of Cuba´s Creole Choir. Those of you familiar with groups such as the Buena Vista Social Club would have witnessed a totally different Cuban musical style in the Creole Choir. Influenced by the history of Haitian Immigrants in Cuba, the songs - all sang in Creole - ranged from the melancholy to the uplifting; all received warmly by the crowd. On Friday night, on the Bus Station stage, it was the turn of Canarian band The Birkins to bask in the limelight. The five-piece rock band were fronted by the strong voices and charisma of singer Christina Santana and guitarrist Daniel Machin. They demonstrated great versatility by singing in both English and French. It was the up-tempo English songs such as ‘Reflections’ and ´This is the Right Time´,the title song of their album, that brought the audience alive.

climax to her perfomance, a version of Eleanor Rigby, which established her as one of the stars of this year´s WOMAD. On to Saturday night, which is customarily when the DJ’s arrive. French act Frederick Galliano and Kudoro Sound System took the Santa Catalina Stage by storm. He was then followed by Orchestre National de Barbes, a combination of North African and French Musicans, who provided a more traditional sound to finish off the night in spectacular style.

Following The Birkins was Krystle Warren, a singer song-writer from Kansas City. With a stunning voice that shone with genres ranging across jazz, country and soul, the American songstress totally captivated the Friday-night audience . Fans of Tracey Chapman, Nina Simone and even Jeff Buckley would have thoroughly enjoyed her set. Warren´s own songs including ‘Tuesday Mornings’ and ‘Circles’ proved popular but it was the

This year the main attraction was Mayra Andrade from Capo Verde who has, it seemed, already acquired an enthuiastic following in Las Palmas. Her beautiful singing voice and perfect command of Spanish in between the songs will only have increased her popularity in this part of the world. In addition to the musical performances, there was the usual mix of alternative entertainment. There were films showing; market stalls selling everything from shoes to art to ethnic jewellery as well as workshops for kids, culminating in the Children´s Procession on Sunday. I finally took my leave on Sunday evening, exhausted but happy after attending another great WOMAD. The festival continues to be a highlight of the Las Palmas Calendar and the residents of the city are fortunate that entry to the event remains completely free. I met some English visitors who had paid 125 pounds to attend the equivalent event back home. If you add the climate and the close proximity of Las Canteras into the equation, you have the ideal Autumn getaway for mainland Europeans. The number of visitors certainly seemed to have increased this year and hopefully the powers that be will continue to recognise this and the festival`s many other merits. I´m already looking forweard to next year! By Gordon Sutcliffe

Armistice Day In the South terror in the service of their countries on Armistice Day. The Service of Prayer and Reflection opened with words of greeting and scripture and was led by Father Keith Jefferies. The readings and poems of remembrance were led by Revd. Paul Burrows-Gibson. As the 11am approached Fr Keith gave the Exhortation, very appropriate as he had served in the British Army in Northern Ireland, and this was followed by the two minute silence observed by the many people present and passers-by- who took time out of their busy lives to give thanks for those who have died. The Kohima Epitaph was read by Revd Paul at the end of the Silence and a Thanksgiving prayer.

On Thursday 11th November members of the International community living on the island and tourists gathered overlooking the sea to remember all those who have lost their lives in conflict and

Wreaths were then laid at the Stone Cenotaph and personal memories relived. One on behalf of the International Armed forces and the second on behalf of the International Community in Gran Canaria. Father Keith gave a moving and thought provoking homily on the perils of war

and how this affects the lives of so many people and even in the modern day when so many are losing their lives or being seriously maimed by the result of the conflict in Afghanistan. He also praised the work of Help for Heroes who care and support the modern armed services and those suffering and the care that they receive through charitable donations The service continued with international prayers for peace and remembering the British and Spanish Armed services currently serving abroad. Father Keith gave the final blessing to bring the moving ceremony to close. A substantial donation was made to Help for Heroes from the collection made at the ceremony The wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace. James 3:17-18

25 Years of Puerto de Mogan 1985-2010

The story of Puerto de Mogan starts with its creator, the late artist Rafael Neville, who moved to Mogan in the mid 60’s. Rafael Neville Rubio-Arguelles, fifth Count of Berlanga was a Spanish nobleman, born in Malaga in 1926. He died at the age of 70 in his beloved Sardinia in Italy. His father Edgar Neville was a famous film producer and his first development projects were on the Costa del Sol in Southern Spain. Afterwards he moved to Sardinia in Italy, where he developed the small but very charming Port Rafael. On the facade of the old city hall, the former house of Rafael Neville, you can still read his motto that inspired his work... Dreaming is Living.

He dedicated the tiny church in Port Rafael to Saint Rita, the Patron saint of lost causes, who showed during her life that it is possible for our dreams to be merely delayed, but not necessarily denied. He brought Santa Rita, his family’s Patron Saint, with him all the way to Playa de Mogan to realise his final dream: Puerto de Mogan. Playa de Mogan was once just a small isolated fishing village, in which his dream seemed physically and economically impossible. In 1980 his dream started to become a reality and construction of the first phase was completed in 1988. 25 years later, we all feel proud as we see the realisation of what seemed an impossible dream; to create the prettiest development on the islands. Known as ‘the Venice of the Canaries’ it has become for every tourist a ‘dream to live’.

A ‘Real’ Moganera?

Rosa Mellbin, from Sweden, and who is 91 years old was interviewed by Bibi Agrell during the celebrations of the 25th anniversary of Puerto Mogan. When was the first time you visited Puerto Mogan?

Every evening there was music and sometimes dancing. At the pool there was a staircase leading directly down into the Atlantic sea. The village was so beautiful; the narrow streets with bourganvillea in different colours hanging above.

At the end of the 70’s, when my husband and I made a trip by car to Puerto Mogan from Playa del Inglés. We found that the small village was an idyllic place, and we wanted to come back.

Art Exhibition of Open Air Painting Competition

Before I used to climb the mountains with a friend, but now I take small walks with my Zimmer frame. I usually go to the original little square, where I sit down and look at the old men playing cards.

Do You have any special memory from that time?

Somethings which have changed in Puerto Mogan?

We sat in a small restaurant close to the square, and from there we saw many trucks loaded with huge cement blocks, and wondered what they were for. Did You ever came back to Puerto Mogan?

How many times have you been to Puerto Mogan?

Yes, but much later, 1986 we returned. We have stayed at different places along the Canarian coasts.

During the last 24 years I’ve been here for three weeks every year in November, even after my husbands’ death. The first years we stayed in the hotel, but then we moved into one of the apartments, which belongs to hotel Club de Mar. Sometimes we came over with some friends too.

How come you chose Puerto Mogan? A colleague told me, that we must go visit Hotel Club de Mar in Puerto Mogan. The hotel was only one year old. We stayed there for two weeks on half boards and were very satisfied. Our hotel room had a fabulous view over the harbor, and in the dining room the tables had proper white tablecloths on and food was served at the table.

The warmth in November- the sun is shining almost every day. The climate is perfect, and it’s wonderful to be able to swim in the Atlantic sea. The atmosphere in the small village is still idyllic. There are no cars driving in the center of the village, and it´s easy to walk.

www.thecanarynews.com

Have you visit other countries? Yes, I´ve travelled a lot in Italy and Florida. What is it then in Puerto Mogan that attracts you most?

Oh, yes, it´s much bigger now, more houses, more tourists. The beach has been covered with bright white, sand. There are so many more restaurants to choose from for meals and the road to Puerto Mogan has become much safer with all the new tunnels. What do you most look forward to when you arrive in November? Mostly I long for the salty Atlantic bathing and the warmth. But I’m also looking forward to meeting my friends, whom I meet every year here. I love the fact that the gardener and housekeeper say “Welcome” as soon as I arrive. Will you still be coming to Puerto Mogan? Oh yes, as long as I live! By Bibi Agrell

The open air painting contest which took place on the 9th October in the commercial centre of Mesa y Lopez, Las Palmas was a huge success. Prize money totalling 19,800€ was donated by various local businesses and shared amongst the top 19 winners. More than 280 people between the ages of 16 and 75 years of age, and of 20 different nationalities entered the competition, which practically brought the main street of Mesa y Lopez to a standstill. Entrants were not just from Gran Canaria but came from mainland Spain including Madrid, Malaga, Ceuta and Sevilla. The event gave the contestants the opportunity to show off their skills as many Saturday shoppers stopped to admire their work. An exhibition of some of the work can be seen at the Edificio Cultural Ponce de Leon, Calle Castillo 6, Las Palmas until the 10th December.

Letter of the week Dear Editor, I have recently returned from Fuerteventura where I had a few days holidays .Whilst there I could not help to notice how upbeat the inhabitants and the business people were there. The airport has had a nice expansion and the people are there in droves. Whilst there I picked up the local paper (not as good as The Canary News I have to say) and in the paper was an article saying that tourism was up and the occupancy was the best for the last couple of years, 90% and in some cases 100% There was an interesting quote from one of the managers of the larger hotels on the island who said “our occupancy is up because we are charging what we did 10 - yes 10 years ago”. Predictions were that the total number of visitors to their island will top1.7 million mark. Local politicians praised industry leaders and the work done in opening new markets and bringing low cost carriers to the island. Do you think the message will ever sink in Gran Canaria? An Avid Reader of The Canary News It may be boring, but we shall keep on publishing letters like this until business owners and the local councils do something about it! Ed

is a matter for dog owners and the local authorities. Perhaps a good idea would be to employ the new local Canarian police force to round up and issue fines to these irresponsible owners. Dogs who are loose and out on their own should be taken to a council dog pound where the owners would have to pay a fee to get them back. I really don’t know the answer to this one. Ed Just love The Canary News. I wait in anticipation every fortnight to see the latest edition and read it cover to cover. Oh, and I am in seventh heaven that we now have our very own Marks and Spencer food shop. I will definitely be visiting Las Palmas very soon, although what I can’t understand is why we don’t have anything down here in the south? Why has Primark opened up in the north of the island? Do we not deserve anything down here? A disgruntled but happy reader. Glad you like our newspaper. It’s good to get feedback from our readers. Regards the store openings, well we have been reliably informed that if the M & S food store goes well they will surely look at opening others – although to be fair they didn’t actually say in the South, same goes for Primark. Ed Dear The Canary News In first place we have to mention that we are most grateful for the inclosure of the swedish churchservices in your newspaper The Canary News.

Don’t they realise that if a small child falls in this mess and then inadvertently rubs their eyes they could lose their sight? What if it was their child or grand child?

The reason for this email is that we no longer offer permanent services in Las Palmas and we have no permanent place where they are celebrated. During the winter season we offer church services approx. every 15 days and they are announced on our homepage www. svenskakyrkan.se/grancanaria. For San Agustín they remain on Sundays at 6pm but the Wednesday services has changed and is now at 11am. In case something is unclear or if you wish some more information, please don´t hesitate in contacting us on this email grancanaria@svenskakyrkan.se Kindest regards,

Is there anything at all we can do to stop this?

Can our Scandinavian readers who attend this church please take note. Ed

Congratulations to The Canary News for publishing a letter in the last edition about the dog excrement left by irresponsible owners throughout the island. I live near the Europa Centre in Puerto Rico and it’s absolutely disgusting. It seems that these selfish owners leave their dogs all day long to continually bark on their terrace, whilst they are out at work, then when they return just open the door and let them go.

Unfortunately, as we mentioned in our last edition, this

As I watched Prince Harry place the solitary cross in the field of his friend and colleague who died in the war with Afghanistan, a song kept reverberating in the recess of my mind; something about walking10,000 miles, it seemed very apt as the British forces came together to walk 1,000 miles, stopping to lay poppy wreaths along the way. Their aim was to raise over £1m in support of the British Legion and its’ Poppy Appeal. Remembrance Day has always held a special place in my heart, as I could easily have been one of those distraught parents mourning the death of a child. My own daughter served in Northern Ireland at the height of the troubles; she was there for three, souldestroying long years serving in the RAF. It was like a life sentence for me; I dreaded knocks at the door and would go to bed at night dreaming of the Military Police calling on me. Those three long years made a massive impact on both our lives, I saw a huge change in her. She was more withdrawn, didn’t laugh as much and was fiercely protective of me when I insisted on visiting her in Northern Ireland. The scenes which unfolded before my eyes were totally alien to anything I had ever experienced; watch what you say, who you talk to, never mention the forces, check your car and before you venture out check which areas are in the ‘safe’ zone that night. And remember readers, this was close to home in Northern Ireland, not thousands of miles away in some hot, dusty country where you can scarcely breathe. In our cosy little homes, we cannot even begin to imagine what our sons, daughters, husbands and wives have to contend with whilst protecting the safety of our country and its’ people. We have no idea whatsoever the mental anguish they go through for us; watching their colleagues and friends die in battle wherever it is. And after their tour is finished, what then, who is there to help them come to terms with their nightmares? Many are dis-figured, many take their own lives unable to live with the scenes playing over and over again in their minds’ eye. Society owes these brave men and woman a debt of gratitude which we can never repay. They don’t ask for much, their pride won’t allow it, but we should remember what they did and carry on doing to protect us, and that is why the website www. uk-fallen-heroes.co.uk has been set up. It’s great to ‘remember’ on Remembrance Sunday, but what about the rest of the year? Take a few moments out of your day-to-day schedule, just stop for one moment and imagine one of YOUR loved ones battling on faraway shores to protect your way of life – the life that many of us take for granted. I make absolutely no apology whatsoever for today’s column – no light hearted banter about what the footballers earn, what the government is planning next for us or how the unemployment situation and lack of tourism is ‘getting us down’. Instead, I pay tribute to the Armed Forces of every country who fight for us, fight for the right to take down the dictators and scourge on humanity, fight against the terrorists who believe that they can massacre hundreds of innocent people in the name of ‘god’. When will we learn? And so a heartfelt THANKYOU to all the brave men and women who serve their country, may God protect you whoever you are.

Issue 35 - Friday 19th November - Thursday 2nd December 2010 - The Canary News

Finance with Stephen Tiley from MoneyCorp The two weeks leading up to 11th November has seen some interesting swings in exchange rates for the pound against the euro. We have seen a low of 1.118 to a high of 1.1755 almost 6 cents. Explaining this movement becomes even more confusing as it was certainly unexpected. Is the UK economy now well on its way to a full recovery? Is the eurozone experiencing tougher times? Has the US dollar had an impact? Well the answer to the last question is yes. There is an old quote from John Connally ex US Treasury Secretary who was also unfortunately the Governor of Texas and was in the car when President J F Kennedy was shot. He said, “The dollar is our currency but your problem”. How right he was as the difficulties encountered in the USA have a definite impact on the rest of us. With the current difficulties of again trying to kick start their economy, the Federal Reserve have decided upon a further round of Quantative Easing agreeing to a $600 billion injection over the coming months. The impact should be a cheapening of the dollar which should in turn, promote investment, jobs and fend off deflation. For the Central Banks of the world that hold about $5 trillion worth of US debt in their reserves the statement about the dollar being somebody else’s problem certainly rings true.

Within the Eurozone we have also seen some conflicting information notably consumer spending figures in Germany and France. In Germany, consumer spending was quite flat whilst in France consumer spending was bubbly. At a time when the country was being crippled with a variety of strike action it seems very odd, then again maybe when on strike everybody was shopping!! Again within the Eurozone you have Germany where employment opportunities seem to be improving whilst across the rest of Europe unemployment is on the increase. All this continues to promote the argument that each country needs to be able to manage its own currency and speculation that the euro will fall apart. I personally cannot see this happening so don’t panic just yet . Looking within the UK we see continued discussions that house prices are due for a further fall and this was supported by the release of the number of monthly mortgages approved recently which stood at c 32,000. To sustain an interest in the market requires about 48,000 approvals per month, will this happen in the short term with fears of increasing unemployment is a big question? Good news however to come out of the UK was from the construction sector where the approved civil engineering projects held their own and kept this sector together. that the Banks assumption that the stock of purchased assets financed by issuance of central bank reserves remains at £200 billion which means that a further round of quantative easing is out of the question. 10 Family Life

The Canary News - Friday 19th November - Thursday 2nd December 2010 - Issue 35

www.thecanarynews.com

Family Therapy has a major impact on the rest of the family, and the way the family reacts can help or hinder the patient’s recovery. Depression, bipolar illness, schizophrenia and personality difficulties are all challenging for individuals and their families and family therapy can be a useful part of the care plan, cooperating with other professionals. Family therapy is also important in managing eating disorders, addictions, and emotional and behavioural problems in children.

Change depends upon addressing what you want, and fitting your views of change and inspiring the hope necessary for action. Effective therapy matches your theory of change.

There is good evidence of efficacy and some of the evidence is for particular conditions such as anorexia, depression, opiate use, and psychosis. How to know when time has come to start therapy? If the problem affects the relationship with others; family, friends and colleagues and how the person feels about himself, then the person will be motivated to seek help. In todays’ difficult times, more and more families are finding themselves unable to cope with even the easiest of situations; problems with children in school, shorttime or even no work at all, break up of relationships, more single parent families, the list is endless. And this is where family therapy could help to either alleviate the problems or even solve them altogether. Family therapy is offered to whole families, parts of families, or even individuals when relationships are central to the difficulties. The family therapist does not take sides, blame people, or provide simple answers but tries to understand how the difficulty arises, and assist the family in discovering its’ own resources for new ways of relating. By using tools like drawing a “river of life” or by drawing a “family tree”, the focus will often be on the person’s relationships to others. It is then possible to investigate how a problem affects the relationships to others, or how others can help to moderate a problem. But what is actually a problem? Problems are in fact ‘frustrated dreams’. If you think about it, you will see that behind each problem there is a ‘dream’, or a desire for change. As a family therapist you believe, that each human being is continuously changing, but sometimes a problem is taking too much control of a person’s life or family. By investigating the ‘dreams’ or the wishes a person has for the future, it is possible to find forces to take control of a problem. The family members can have different points of view of a problem. For example, a person can feel it is a problem that his partner is drinking too much alcohol. The person itself doesn`t feel he has an alcohol problem, but feels that it is a problem that the other person is worried about him. What sort of problems can family therapy help with? Serious mental illness in a family member inevitably

In fact, the bigger the problem is and the more distress a problem produces, the bigger is the chance that the therapy will be useful. But change does not come about from the special powers of any particular physician or therapist or therapeutic method; there are no gurus or miracle cures. Change happens when you use your inherent strengths and resources and are supported by relationships that take your innate goodness as given. Change depends on your resources and abilities. Effective therapy utilizes your strengths to create solution possibilities. Change depends on your perceptions of the therapist and the relationship formed in therapy. Effective therapy is based on a strong alliance.

Are you ready for change? Seeking a therapist to assist you in your efforts can be exactly what you need to inspire the changes you wish to make. A family therapist can help you make a plan of change and give you the support you need. You can find family therapists working in public institutions, in private clinics, or working as independent consultants. A family therapist usually has a background as a psychologist, social worker or MD/ physician, or a combination of all three. The therapists each have their own backgrounds but do not assume that they know about other cultures; in other words the therapist is curious and respectful of differences between families. The Canary News Habla Español

Hoy vamos a sorprenderles.

visitors the best of ourselves, why should we not do the same with our artists performance? Here we have some examples; the walls and corridors of the Hotel Neptuno and Catarina Hotel are full with the works of several Canary Island artists. They are not the only ones, in the Hotel Oasis you can see works by Manolo Peña and in the bus station in Las Palmas, Pepe Damaso has also exhibited.

Today we have found another wonderful example of where art and tourism comes together: the first art fair of Canarias Arte in the Congress Palace of ExpoMeloneras.

The Canary News le da la bienvenida. Welcome to The Canary News.

Por Fulgencio Cerrajero We are delighted to introduce our new Spanish section specifically aimed at our Spanish readers and of course those of you who are following Theresa’s Spanish lessons and who want to improve through reading . Over the coming months we will gradually introduce more Spanish items of interest until we arrive at the point where English translation will be phased out and a complete Spanish pullout will be part of The Canary News. We hope you enjoy the new section.

Under the banner of Atlantic artists, from November 12th, until December 12th, the Palacio de Congresos ExpoMeloneras, has its’ first showing of Canarian Art. Canarias Arte, as I said previously, is backed by Pepe Damaso, who is without doubt one of our greatest international contemporary artists’. Pepe displays various paintings and chosen graphic pieces along with 19 other artists. The First Art Fair Canarias Arte therefore devotes a place of honour to Pepe, but maybe we should say that Pepe Damaso has dedicated it to us; a unique and personal selection of his work. With the support of the Tourism Department of Maspalomas, Maspalomas Costa Calida, and especially the Deputy Mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Ms. Concepcion Narváez, together with the personal commitment of the Congress Palace Director of ExpoMeloneras, D. Román Crisanto , from the Lopesan Group, this show has managed to gather a good sample of the best artistic talent of “made in the Canaries.” Confirmed and established artists, together with new wave artists who are already setting new trends have come together to provide more than 90 works by international and local artists with a common denominator: their origin and Canarian inspiration. Come and See: there are many to buy The exhibition can be visited for free, until December 12th , from 16:00 to 21:00 pm, Monday - Friday. Those who love painting, sculpture, photography, visual arts and design in general, can not only see and admire the Canarian talent, but are also able to buy the works exhibited there. The organization has taken great care to select works which are affordable, both in price, size and format, so to speak, pretty inexpensive and easily transportable. Starting from sixty five pounds, and with an average range that cost no more than two thousand euros you can buy authentic pieces of art, unique works of high quality and numbered series. Reliable paintings and sculptures with a full guarantee, and signed by the author. Sure not all the Canarian artists who could be at the fair are here because of lack of space and other factors outside the organization, but Elena Vega, Managing Director of the fair, has worked in record time, and we are sure that she will repeat the experience again with more resources next time. So on behalf of Ellen, we would like to thank all participants for their cooperation and enthusiasm. By Fulgencio Cerrajero

New Swedish Bookshop & Café with Nina Blaafjell The Swedish Bookshop has been run online at www.svenskabokhandeln. eu for the past two years. However, Birgitta & Lennart have now taken the step of opening a bookshop and café in Sonnenland. The idea is to have a bookshop selling English, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and German books combined with a café selling some traditional Swedish dishes.

The book shop offers both new and second hand books and the selection includes children’s books, novels, biographies as well as factual literature. Birgitta has spent more than thirty years working in the the book trade and is also happy to order specific titles for customers. It is the couples’ great love of literature that fuelled their plan to create a bookshop here in Gran Canaria, and through their web site and in the shop it is also possible to read reviews of books and to explore the best seller lists. The Swedish book shop has also been selected as the supplier of books to the Norwegian school here in Gran Canaria amongst others. The bookshop itself has been fitted out like an old fashioned library with dark wood and subtle lighting. This makes a refreshing change from most of the chain stores we are familiar with today and a lovely environment to look through the large and varied selection of books.

Once you have made you selection you can then relax with a drink and some excellent home cooking. The Canary News was invited to the grand opening and I was offered a sample of some of the dishes available. These ranged from roast beef to Gravalax and were served with lovely bread and some interesting relishes such as beetroot mayonnaise. All the food and cakes at the café, which has been named Café L&B after the owners, are homemade. The bookshop and café are located in Complejo Ataitana Faro in Calle Einstein 5, Sonnenland. They

by Barrie Mahoney

Barrie Mahoney was a teacher, head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands as a newspaper editor. He is still enjoying life in the sun as a writer and author.

Until death do us part (or until someone better comes along) Recent divorce statistics from Spain’s National Statistics Office are, at first glance, alarming. The figures show that in the Canary Islands the rate of 3 divorces per thousand of the population is the highest in Spain, where the divorce rate has fallen by 10 per cent since the time of the last survey in 2008. Given that, for many, these islands appear to be an island paradise that draws many Northern Europeans to the islands, begs the question “What has gone wrong for these couples?” I can only guess that most of these breakdowns will be in the younger age group and are linked to the stresses caused by a lack of jobs, homes and a bleak future. Canarians are struggling with nearly 30 per cent unemployment, and this has hit the youth particularly hard. One in every three unemployed are under 30 years old leading them to be dubbed “the lost generation”. Statistics indicate that more than half of those in their thirties are still not financially independent and rely on their parents for support. The problems have become more acute in recent years with the influx of expats moving to these islands. The best and most affordable properties have been snapped up by expats, forcing house prices, goods and services to

increase as a consequence. It is an anomaly that despite the popularity of these islands as a holiday destination, they remain the bastions of unemployment, low pay, long hours and a reliance on ‘black money’ rather than secure contracts offering a living wage to local people. The islands’ government has attempted in recent years to provide affordable housing for young families, but the supply and availability of such properties has been slow and requires a steady income, which many young couples do not have. As many of us will remember from the UK, affordable housing, starter homes and other such well-meaning schemes do not remain affordable housing for very long.

Island living, although idyllic in many ways, also brings other pressures that are often not realised. Island living often creates, by definition, an insular view of life. Despite attempts

by schools to widen their pupils’ experiences, many have never left these islands. Whereas school leavers in Peninsular Spain and other parts of Europe attend universities far from home, gaining rich experiences and meeting a wide variety of other people, as they complete their formal education, many Canarians study locally and have never left the islands. I recall putting the question of travel to Peninsular Spain and further afield to one young Canarian in his thirties. His reply was, “Why should we? We have everything that we need here.” However, it is this insularity of knowing maybe only the people that we went to school with, or those from the same town or village that creates its own problems. Hopefully, these recent statistics will provide opportunities for some soul-searching amongst clerics, local and national politicians. The statistics will also provide useful fodder for university researchers and the like. Hopefully, society too will look seriously at the pressures that young Canarian families currently face and take action. However, in these days of recession and financial cutbacks, I somehow doubt that anything positive will happen to address an obvious problem. © Barrie Mahoney

Lesson 29

And now for something completely different I hope you´ll indulge me in considering the suggestion I´m about to make which could revolutionise your command of the language here. As a tutor in English for Canarians and Spanish for foreigners, I´m always frustrated to hear ‘but I don´t have anyone to practise with’ or ‘no tengo con quién practicar’ – literally: I no have with who to practise.

The twain shall meet! We live side-by-side with our Canarian neighbours, yet how many of us enjoy true friendships with local people? Yes, there are language and cultural barriers, but we shouldn´t let these stand in the way of one crucial desire that unites thousands of Canarians and Brits: to speak better Spanish (us) or English (them). My suggestion for kickstarting your Spanish is free, (gratis), fun (divertido), and could open both parties up to a new social circle through the shared goal of improving our foreign language skills. It´s called an intercambio de idiomas (language exchange), and there are a myriad of ways to find your ideal speaking partner. If you don´t have neighbours or work colleagues you can approach, try the following: THE INTERNET – Spanish websites such as www. planetanuncios.com and www.mundoanuncio.com have a dedicated section offering language exchanges

First, click on the button which reads: publica/inserta tu anuncio gratis (publish/insert your free ad); next, select the category Comunidad (community); and then intercambio de idiomas. A form will appear asking for your país (country) – select España – and then your zona or provincia (Las Palmas), followed by the part of the island you live in. In the Descripción box you can write in English if you prefer. Here is a sample text in both languages: GRAN CANARIA SOUTH. English woman, mid 50s, seeks English-Spanish language exchange with male/ female in the south of the island, ideally after 6pm or weekends. My level of Spanish is basic/intermediate/ advanced and my interests include reading, travelling and salsa dancing. I work in a hotel/am retired/ unemployed and I need Spanish for my work/because I live here/because my partner is Canarian etc. Contact Jenny by email at… GRAN CANARIA – SUR. Two English-language websites for Gran Canaria that I´m hoping will shortly include a language exchange category, and which already allow free advertising, are: http://grancanariaguru.com and www.gran-canariainfo.com

VIA POSTER ON A NOTICEBOARD (un tablón de anuncios) – you can also pin up your ‘language exchange’ request on the noticeboard of your local biblioteca or library (in Las Palmas, Vecindario, or San Fernando etc), or look for community noticeboards in local cafes, churches, schools, leisure centres and shops. VIA A CLASSIFIED AD (anuncio clasificado) in The Canary News (remember that local people read our paper to practise their English! See back pages) or Canarian newspapers such as Canarias 7 or La Provincia (www.canarias7.es or www.laprovincia.es). Face-to-face or online chat? In terms of understanding one another, it´s easier to make initial contact by email than by phone. If you’d prefer face-to-face meetings , suggest a public, but quiet place (un local público pero tranquilo) like a local coffee bar. Aim to distribute your time equally between the two languages. The idea is to correct each others’ mistakes during the conversation, and encourage one another in a friendly, relaxed environment. A bi-lingual dictionary is recommended – and a notepad of course! If it suits you better to chat online via SKYPE or type via email/Messenger etc, this allows greater flexibility without the need for travel. Join my intercambio! I’m currently establishing a free, nationwide language exchange service to try and match English and Spanish speakers according to their location, language level and requirements. To sign up without commitment, please fill in my form (available in English and Spanish) by emailing me at theresacoe@gmail.com

Web and Computer problems? info@thecanarynews.com Use mobile anti-malware software on your phone to avoid downloading malware (viruses or spyware) disguised as ringtone files. You never really know what that “download” button is going to send you. Your mobile phone service provider probably makes it very easy to download ringtones from its inventory; often it’s just a one-button click to retrieve and install a carrier-provided ringtone. But they also charge up to $3 a pop for snatches of popular songs. Know what your carrier charges for ringtones and don’t rely on it for very many ringtones. Q. Where can I find free ringtones for my mobile phone?

Q. How do I download a ringtone to my mobile phone? Everyone wants a “distinctive” ringtone for their cell phone so they know a call is for them and not someone else in the room. Personally, I want a ringtone that says, “Bob Rankin, you have a call,” but most people want something a bit jazzier. There are lots of free ringtones online, but you have to read the fine print to avoid being scammed. Some free ringtone sites want you to click a checkbox to agree to being sent text messages containing ads; many even check the box for you, and hide it far under the big “download ringtone now” button. Read the fine print before you download any ringtone.

Finding free ringtones online is as easy as Googling “free ringtones.” Just go to one of these sites and select a ringtone you want. Avoid sites that require registration, if possible. If you must register with a valid email address use a throwaway address that you don’t mind getting spam at. Some have reams of small print that lock you into a monthly ringtone subscription. Uncheck any boxes that commit you to anything. Then you’re ready to download a ringtone and install it on your phone. Some sites offer “keypress ringtones” for mobile phones. If you click to download a ringtone and see a long string of characters like “18**#1#11#1969**#008188*16 ...” that’s a keypress ringtone that you can program directly into your phone. Your phone must have a composer or melody editing function to be able to do keypress tones. The nice

thing about this type of ringtone is that you don’t have to download anything that might potentially contain malware. One site that offers free ringtones is Cool Free Ringtones. You can download free polyphonic ringtones and keypress ringtones here, but be careful where you click. There are a lot of clever ads for PAID ringtones and ringtone subscription services as well. Did I mention that you have to read the fine print to avoid being scammed? In some cases, you enter your cell phone number and the ringtone is sent to the phone directly. There you can save it in a ringtone library and install it as your default ringtone according to your phone’s instructions. But now the marketers have your cell phone number, so you may want to try it another way. Download the ringtone file to your computer, if possible. Usually these are MP3 or MIDI files that you can play on your computer to make sure it’s what you really want. Then use software that connects your cell phone to your computer for synchronization of contacts and other files. If your phone didn’t come with a CD that includes a way to transfer files to and from the phone, look for that software on the manufacturer’s website. Microsoft Windows Sync Center is the latest synchronization software built into Windows 7. You can automatically transfer files between phone and a sync folder on your PC. You can also drag and drop files between your computer-based sync folder and folders on your Windows phone. Then install ringtones per your phone’s instructions.

Her Majesty’s Ambassador On A Visit to Gran Canaria

We chatted easily about various subjects including The Canary News and he commented on the quality of content, asking how many writers and reporters we had as the different sections were always very interesting. Thank you Ambassador!

Continued from front page ... The most tasking part of the job is at the beginning when he has to address an audience of say 150 – 200 people of which he knows no-one. Yet after about a year the situation changes considerably whereby he begins to recognise many faces and has met the contacts he needs. Giles told me that the three main functions of an Ambassador are to ensure the safety of British people abroad, build strong relationships with the government of the country and to assist British people through the services of the British Consul.

Feature 17 Holy Trinity, Las Palmas de GC, November 2010

Issue 35 - Friday 19th November - Thursday 2nd December 2010 - The Canary News

At this point Matthew, our British Consul, spoke to the Ambassador telling him how The Canary News and themselves work very closely together, and how we are supportive of the Consul’s work on the island. We outlined various projects we are undertaking including the charity event to be held early next year. The Ambassador was pleased and very impressed at such a partnership and commented on how they needed the support of the press. In particular he asked us to keep driving home to residents on Gran Canaria how they should register on the ‘padron’ in order to enjoy the benefits this gives to everyone, as don’t forget your local council receives money to improve its’ services depending on headcount in their municipality.

As the meeting came to a close, the Ambassador asked if I had heard about Matthew’s promotion. I hadn’t, he had certainly kept that under his hat! Matthew has been promoted to British Consul in Madrid, so will soon be leaving the island to take up his new post. However, Matthew was quick to point out that nothing would change on Gran Canaria concerning their presence and involvement with the local community. Before leaving he would make sure I was introduced to the new British Consul when he or she is appointed. As we took our leave, I asked Giles ‘where to next’ and he replied that over the next few days he was visiting Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Tenerife. He is a good representative for Her Majesty as he doesn’t believe in sitting in his Ivory Tower just playing a game. So thank you Ambassador, the pleasure was all mine, and good luck Matthew in your forthcoming promotion and the work you have done on behalf of the British residents on Gran Canaria. Genna D’Cruz

The Remembrance Day service at Holy Trinity Las Palmas, (14 November) was attended by the British Consul and the Vice-Consul. The Consul, Matthew Vickers, read one of the lessons and laid a wreath at the war memorial. After the service the chaplain, Fr Peter Ford, made a surprise presentation to the Consul- a tea towel. Peter Ford said it would be useful to him as he had recently married and it would serve as a reminder of his time in the Canary Islands. So let’s venture out into the crazy mad world that we all live in and stuff our faces with scrumptious yummy things, nnyyessss!! Plus I have good news for you all as today is the day I can finally sleep easy as I can test out my new shimmer shoes fresh from Paris this morning, isn’t that marvellous! Oh I do love life here on Gran Canaria, it’s sunny all the time, I have a fabulous perma-tan and I get that urge to go belly filling somewhere special all the time, oh thank heavens for chefs and kitchens – where would we be without them! But before hand I need your help to choose something fabulous to wear with my new shimmery shoes.

I enjoyed a nice big glass of fresh white wine and a bottle of genuine Italian sparkling water!

Now what shall we do hmmm? I shall throw open the closet doors and gasp in heavenly anticipation…Ah! Nyess a lovely baby blue lace shirt with sparkly bits in and a tight pair of thigh hugging white trousers with intricate hand stitching and diamantes – a matching 5 foot high head piece and blue suede buckle bag – perfect! Lunch time was literally round the corner and I really needed to fill myself up fast – I was simply starving!! So dressed up to the nines and feeling totally divine I stepped outside in the glistening sunshine, posed a bit for the neighbours, and trudged the pavement making headway to a new discovery of mine in true Italian style called Il Duomo di Milano. Indeed I was very excited about my lunch time choice today as I was heading for an Italian owned eatery with an Italian chef… a rare thing on Gran Canaria so I had better make the most of it! The atmosphere is glamorous and romantic with white and blue décor, lovely crisp table clothes and napkins. There is a delightful big outdoor terrace for smokers to gather and Italian style

gardens with a fountain and comfortable chairs.

I could have tried something from the huge menu of meats, fish, pizza, pasta and salads. The dessert menu was reasonable. Beatrice had tiramisu and got cream all over her face, we had to get some damp cloths to clean it all up.

The lovely waiters came rushing to me on arrival, they simply couldn’t wait to serve me… it must have been because I looked so good, they all love me so much! I ordered some lovely looking real Italian pizza for myself and my new best friend Beatrice (she joined me a bit later because she always takes extra time in the bathroom). The pizza was delicious, nice and crispy with lovely crusts. We had some salad with it, it was quality, the leaves were assorted and varied and simply bursting with flavour! Beatrice works down the mines, we met at her 76th birthday party where I was guest of honour – I took some home made scones and a bottle of honey rum. They do pasta too, I had to try it… it looked so good and I enjoyed it so much it was sincerely excellent with real parmesan cheese – not powdered and they gave me loads of yummy sauce to go with it.

in Francisco Gourié 57, Triana Area, is open now

We finished off with a rich cup of expresso coffee, it was one of the best coffees around - Illy from Trieste. Overall impression is very good, however a little pricey. Basic margarita pizza was 8€, pasta dishes are around 9€, desserts around 5.50€, glass of white wine 3.00€ For two people: 2 pizzas, 1 glass white wine, 1 orange, small bottle fizzy water, 1 espresso, total was nearly 28€. I awarded 4 out of 5 stars for the sheer quality and choice of food. Could have gained five if the prices had been more reasonable. Adieu mes amies, or, ciao for now!

Spaghetti Con Langostines

Ingredients:

Method:

500gr cooked giant prawns (not frozen, de-shelled) 1 onion Half teacup olive oil 1 clove garlic 1 tablespoon dried oregano Half tube tomato puree 1 tin chopped tomatoes Salt and pepper Qtr lt water Parsley to decorate

Take the heads, tails and shells off all the prawns and put into a large frying pan. Put the prawns to one side, having previously taken out the ‘black’ intestine with a knife. To the frying pan add the olive oil and ‘cook,’ this is to ensure the flavour comes out of the shells. Meanwhile, slice the onion, and finely chop the garlic. After about ten minutes, scoop the prawn heads, tails and shells out of the frying pan and discard, taking care to preserve the oil with the juices.

Churros con Chocolate

- Churros with Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:

2 cups water 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil ¼ teaspoon salt 2 cups flour Vegetable oil (for frying) ¼ cup sugar ¼ teaspoon cinnamon (optional)

Method: In a medium saucepan, combine water, 1 Tablespoon oil, and salt. Bring to a boil. Add the flour and immediately turn heat to low; stir constantly until a ball of dough forms. Remove from heat and allow to cool. When dough can be handled, place it in a pastry bag or cake decorator with a fluted

Cookery 19

Issue 35 - Friday 19th November - Thursday 2nd December 2010 - The Canary News

tip; press the dough into 4-inch strips that are about 3/8 of an inch in diameter. In a frying pan, heat vegetable oil (about ½-inch deep) until very hot. Reduce heat to medium and fry the churros until they begin to turn golden brown, about 2 minutes, on each side (turn them once while frying). Cook only a few at a time, to keep an eye on them. When churros are cooked, remove them from the pan and place on paper towels to drain. Roll warm churros in sugar (mixed with cinnamon, if desired). Serve with melted hot chocolate. Makes about 30 fritters.

– Spaghetti with King Prawns

Add a little more olive oil if it seems too ‘dry’. Fry the onion in the frying pan, when soft add the chopped garlic. After five minutes stir in the tomato puree and oregano, add the tin of tomatoes, salt and pepper and water. Bring to the boil, then turn down very low until just bubbling. Cook for 45 mins. 10 mins before end of cooking add the prawns to ‘warm through’. Do not cook as the prawns will become very chewy. Cook the spaghetti and drain, then add to the large frying pan (not the other way around). This is to preserve all the juices. Mix well, decorate with fresh parley and serve.

Fashion For That Special Time Underwear A good maternity bra is absolutely necessary to support your breasts during pregnancy. Get bras with wide straps and bands, making sure they give enough support to your swelling breasts. Bras that have adjustable straps and at least two sets of adjustable hooks would be good for you.

Nowadays, being pregnant means that a whole new fashion world is thrown at your feet! No more do you have to wear loose fitting, drab maternity wear that makes you look and feel twice your size. Even if your favourite outfits don’t fit anymore, you can be colour co-ordinated and well accessorized - the style icon as always. Most leading stores now stock up on trendy maternity wear in cool cotton and spandex. Although you can get carried away going on a shopping binge, you must realize that you will be wearing these clothes only for a couple of months. Try not to go overboard with your shopping. Here are a few tips to keep your dressing fashionable yet healthy for you and your baby.

Pregnancy hormones loosen up your joints, which is why some pregnant women feel that their feet expand by a size during pregnancy.

As for underwear, get them a size or two larger and let the waistband rest under your tummy.

With loose joints your balance may become precarious and thus it is advisable to lay off high heels and stilettos. Try to wear fashionable flats or low-heeled sandals to be on the safe side. Or a really great aid to walking, invest in a pair of ‘fit flops’ these will keep your bottom, thighs and calves exercising as you walk. No varicose veins for you!

Clothes

Accessories

Mix and match trendy cotton shirts and cool knit tees with maternity pants or skirts to get that classy look. You could get maternity pants with waistbands that go around the waist or those that you can cradle your tummy with.

Wear chunky jewellery and long fashionable earrings, maybe a silk scarf to complement your outfit.

Wear clothes that emphasize on the features of your body that aren’t expanding, like snug sleeved tops, button-down shirts and skinnier pants. Go for snug outfits that are both fashionable as well as comfortable, making you feel sexy and feminine. Just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you need to cover up from head to toe. You can wear chic outfits that show the right amount of skin. You could go on a splurge if you like, and buy a nice dress, a suit or a pair of black velvet trousers that make you look great. Wear them as much as you can because you won’t be able to wear them for too long. Many celebs are still sticking to the little crop tops, showing off their growing ‘bump’. You need to be very confident to carry out this, and also live in a hot climate like our own on Gran Canaria.

Footwear Get handbags that are trendy and go with your clothes. All this could add a dash of spice to your pregnancy! Go mad on bright colours, you can be forgiven anything in your present state.

What No Chips!

As Victoria had finished with her client and was waiting for her next appointment I decided to treat myself to a manicure. As Victoria knows, I am very particular about the shape of my nails, so whilst she did the ‘ground work’ of oiling, massaging and trimming, I then took over for the final shape. Once finished it was time to polish, and it was here that she suggested I try out her exciting new product ‘Shellac’. I hadn’t heard of it before, but supposedly it is very popular in the States. The manufacturers claim to have revolutionised nail colour – lasts up to 14 days without any chipping, cracking or wearing!

No colour wearing away, no chips, no dullness, just lovely highly polished nails. I use a computer on a daily basis so my nails do take quite a hammering, however I don’t use them as ‘tools’ as many other do. Just imagine ladies, with the festive season coming up you can get a manicure which will last you the whole fourteen days of celebrations, taking you through to the New Year, sheer bliss!

Now I have tried practically everything which comes out, the ‘paint your nails in minutes and it dries in seconds,’ the ‘hard as diamonds’ you can do anything, etc. etc. nothing ever lived up to the claim, so I was quite sceptical at this latest addition.

I had booked an appointment with my favourite hairdresser Graham from Rejuvena, and as it was a Sunday I finally had a little time to myself. On arriving at the salon, Graham was already busy styling and colouring one of his many regular clients so I prepared myself to wait a short while.

It was only as he started shampooing my hair that we both realised he hadn’t combed the colour through to the ends! So it was rinse off the first colour near the roots then reapply to the ends – I hope you aren’t in a rush he joked.

I noticed that Victoria, owner of Rejuvena, had installed a ‘new look’ manicure bar, and very impressive it is too. Victoria was already busy giving a client a pedicure but came out and had a quick chat with me about a new nail product which had just arrived. Promising to hear more later, it was time to have my hair coloured and styled and as I chatted away to Graham, he expertly applied my colour and then it was the usual 40 minute wait for the colour to take. In between clients, Graham kept popping outside to chat to me and check on the colour, then it was time to shampoo, all the while we kept up a steady stream of, who is doing what, where and when – typical customer to hairdresser banter.

But no, for me it was great just to be able to relax and chat away. He’s not normally distracted but I think it was because he had his mind on other things, like his special Christmas offers I asked him about.

However, I decided to act as the guinea pig for ‘Rejuvena’ and so we started with the special base coat – I must point out at this stage that you cannot use these products at home as you need a professional UV lamp to set the different layers of product. And so it was that a base coat, then two coloured coats of the most amazing red, and finally a protective top coat were applied; in between each, a few seconds of blasting by the UV lamp, then a final gentle ‘wipe’ with remover to take away any excess.

Despite the higher than normal cost, it has proved so popular here on Gran Canaria, that as soon as stocks arrive they vanish off the shelves of the wholesaler.

Wow, my nails looked fantastic, and within a minute they were actually dry to the touch. Shiny, bright and sooo sexy! Previously I mentioned to Victoria that I must retrieve my car keys from the bottom of my bag before she started so that I wouldn’t smudge or chip the nail colour, but she was so confident in the product that she promised me there would be no need.

Colours are fairly limited at the moment, but the very popular pastels and French polishes are available together with a vibrant and high gloss red – perfect for the seasons’ festivities.

As I rummaged around in my bag I dreaded to look at my nails, but hey presto, keys found and nails without a blemish on them! Truly amazing.

Contact Rejuvena on 696 552 022 to book an appointment or call in to the salon which is opposite the main Costa Rica shopping centre.

It’s now several days since the manicure and my nails are looking as shiny and chip-free as the day they were done.

Fighting the Flu By Lee Latchford Evans, Celebrity Personal Trainer, Famouslyfit.com Boost your immune system with exercise. Lee Latchford Evans, ex Steps Star, turned Celebrity Personal Trainer Winter is just around the corner here in the UK, and although you lucky people in Gran Canaria are still enjoying a wonderful climate, I hear the temperatures are dropping, especially at night and many of you are suffering the sneezes! It is easy to forego exercise at this time, preferring to stay indoors and not do anything.

parasites. It also fights against cancer. Imagine everything in your environment (inside and outside your body) that constitutes a “foreign invader”. Your immune system is fighting a battle every single second of every single day. It never rests – not even when you are asleep.

To get the maximum benefit you need to build all four key components of exercise into your weekly routine Aerobic/cardiovascular exercise Weight/resistance training Core strength Stretching/Flexibility

If you continue to combine a regular exercise program with the right nutrition, you will get through the ‘winter’ without resorting to these unpleasant conditions. Benefits of ‘Winter’ Exercise

Exercise and the Immune System

It keeps you in good shape ready for when the weather gets really hot and you want to look good.

There is now a lot of research to confirm that consistent, regular and moderate exercise can boost your body´s immune system. The exercise has to be regular and moderate. The positive effects start to diminish after only a few hours!

It boosts your immune system which means fewer colds and flu. It relieves tension and stress – releasing endorphins in the brain. If you exercise outdoors it continues to expose you to the sun´s rays and it’s so important to top up Vitamin D. What is the Immune System? One of the most important things about regular exercise leading up to and through the winter is that it has a huge effect on the immune system. The immune system is as complex as the brain! It is made up of an army of organs and cells, including the lymphatic system, lymph nodes, lymph fluid, thymus and bone marrow. Our immune system has a memory – so it knows the difference between its own army and the foreign army. It would not be much good to us if it attacked itself would it? It is our natural guardian against disease and protects the body against “foreign invaders” including bacteria, viruses, fungi and

Exercise reduces the production of stress related hormones which are known to weaken the immune system and increases the release of endorphins which will help you fight off the winter blues. No matter how old you are, exercise can improve your health – but if you are over 40 it is especially important because this is the time of life when your immune system will start to weaken significantly if you are not looking after it.

It is also the time of year which we associate with colds and flu. We are being exposed to viruses every day of our lives. So why is it that some people get flu and colds all the time, and others don’t? Research confirms that stress, smoking, poor nutrition, lack of exercise and lack of sleep are the main contributors to a weakened immune system.

It lifts your spirits on dull, cloudy and wet days – exercise is better than many antidepressants.

Exercise increases your body temperature which inhibits the growth of bacteria and germs.

Exercise oxygenates the body which in turn improves the circulation of immune cells, antibodies and white cells in your blood – all of which are so important in fighting off viruses and bacteria in the body. The better these cells circulate, the more efficient your immune system is in locating and defending against viruses and diseases trying to attack your body. Exercise (deep breathing and movement) also kick start your lymphatic system – which is like our personal drainage system helping to clear toxins, pollutants and germs from the body. Exercise helps to rid the lungs of airborne bacteria and viruses.

If you are overweight, you should aim to do 60-90 minutes of exercise every day. If you are within a normal weight range you should do 45 – 60 minutes of exercise at least four times a week. Take yourself off on winter holiday, enjoying the outdoor sports that this offers (downhill or cross country skiing

and ice skating). Wrap up a little warmer and get out for a brisk walk. Join a gym or health club or purchase some exercise equipment for your own home – an elliptical and a set of weights will get you a long way. A nice change from the constant temperatures on the island. Choose exercises that you enjoy: Squash Aerobics Indoor or outdoor running Pilates or yoga Weight training Dancing Kickboxing/ Martial Arts Exercise classes in your local gym. Swimming All the above you can start off slow and get yourself and your body used to this new demand and in time progress to a very comfortable if not high standard. I guarantee you that once you have got through the initial struggle to motivate yourself your body will then miss the training on your rest days. Good luck and have a lovely healthy ‘winter’, especially you lucky people on Gran Canaria. Lee

Time Will Tell Kay Owen, Comfort Corner On busy days, my old Grandpa always used to say “Time is not just running out - I think it’s taken to galloping”.

One priest put it in his weekly newsletter to his parishioners like this:- ‘ It is important for all of us to keep short accounts with our fellow men. That may mean saying sorry, finding the courage to forgive, and taking time to put our mistakes right as we travel along life’s path.

It does appear that as we get older time seems to pass more quickly –though as someone once pointed out, each of us has the same amount of minutes in a day to accomplish things, as for example, Mother Theresa, Michael Angelo and Einstein!

Learning to develop a sense of equilibrium – balance between work and play, activity and rest, doing and being. And what of friends and families? If we say that we love people - does the balance of our lives reflect this in terms of quality time spent with those we care about the most?’

The singing trio, Peter, Paul and Mary once had a folksong in the charts which contained the lines: ‘Remember when we used to laugh at old Father Time? All in all the joke’s on him, and he don’t even mind. Sigh and put your arm around me Look into my eyes. Isn’t it funny how time flies?’ And poet Carl Sandberg writes- “The bad news is time flies; the good news is you’re the pilot!” I like the following mini study, which seeks to address in part the use (and misuse) of time, putting much into perspective. Imagine that you had a bank that credited your account each morning with £86,000, that carried no balance from day to day, allowed you to keep no cash in your account, and every evening cancelled whatever part of the amount you failed to use during the day, what would you do? Draw out every pound every day, of course, and use it to your advantage! Well, you have such a bank, and its name is TIME! Every morning it credits you 86,000 seconds. Every night it rules off as lost whatever of this you failed to invest to good purpose. It carries over no balances; it allows no overdrafts. Each

We can all run our several agendas through life, but we cannot run them all 100 per cent of the time at 100% of our energy without someone paying the price. We have many excuses we use. day it opens a new account with you. If you fail to use the day’s deposit, the loss is yours. There is no going back. There is no drawing against tomorrow.

question. How can we put ourselves in the driving seat so that we make wise decisions as to how our time is spent?

The use of time is a key issue for all of us. The modern driven life-style encourages us to use every second we are given in activity. It makes us suffer from ‘hurry sickness’.

Susan Ertz wrote, “Millions who long for immortality do not know what to do with themselves on a rainy Sunday afternoon”. Time can be frittered away on the sort of things that buy us no space, and which we do not really enjoy.

Counting time is not as important as making time count! How much of that time is used for the things that really matter? If we live at such high speed forever in the fast lane, we run the risks that the number of days we will receive this marvellous credit of 86,000 seconds is shortened.

Some people use their time very selfishly. It is all about MY life, MY leisure, MY targets, and so on. Surely not time well spent. Life consists of living in families, in community, and that often means compromise. We cannot live fulfilled lives if we are only living for today and for ourselves- 24/7.

Maybe in a driven society we need to ask who is doing the driving? Again the poet writes; “Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you”. For many this is the big

Time, they say, is a great teacher. Unfortunately it kills all its pupils! Will we manage to work out how to spend it before it is too late? How can we live in such a way as to spend our time well, making it count for the things that really matter?

The main one is that we convince ourselves that a slower day is coming. “When such and such is finished, then I’ll have more time ….” The trouble is that the slower day is an illusion. It never comes. The trick is to find time for what is important now. There is no time like the present! Just collecting my thoughts to write this week’s column has made me take my own ‘time out’ to reflect on how I may best use the remainder of my time here on earth. The phrase that comes to mind, and one which a wise friend of mine makes his daily prayer is “Lord, take me to the limit of every single minute” Time is of the essence –so let’s not waste it. Yesterday was history, tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift from God; that is why it’s called the PRESENT! Kay Owen. November 2010.

Golf Mind Training – Part 1 Mark McGeehan, PGA Golf Professional, Lopesan Meloneras Golf I have been a Professional Golfer for the past 15 years, and through my experiences both as a player and coach I have learnt what works and what does not! I am a qualified sports psychologist specific for golf and through my teachings I believe that I have the model that golfers can embark on and take a journey to play the golf of their dreams. The increased stress of competitions can cause athletes to react both physically and mentally in a manner that can negatively affect their performance abilities. They may become tense, their heart rates race, they break into a cold sweat, they worry about the outcome of the competition, they find it hard to concentrate on the task in hand. The 4C’s Concentration, confidence, control and commitment (the 4C’s) are generally considered the main mental qualities that are important for successful performance in most sports. Concentration - ability to maintain focus Confidence - believe in one’s abilities Control - ability to maintain emotional control regardless of distraction Commitment - ability to continue working to agreed goals The techniques of relaxation, centering and mental imagery can assist an athlete to achieve the 4C’s. Concentration This is the mental quality to focus on the task in hand. If the athlete lacks concentration then their athletic abilities will not be effectively or efficiently applied to the task. Research has identified the following types of attention focus: Broad Narrow continuum - the athlete focuses on a large or small number of stimuli Internal External continuum - the athlete focuses on internal stimuli (feelings) or external stimuli (ball) The demand for concentration varies with the sport: Sustained concentration - distance

running, cycling, tennis, squash Short bursts of concentration - cricket, golf, shooting, athletic field events Intense concentration - sprinting events, bobsleigh, skiing Common distractions are: anxiety, mistakes, fatigue, weather, public announcements, coach, manager, opponent, negative thoughts etc. Strategies to improve concentration are very personal. One way to maintain focus is to set process goals for each session or competition. The athlete will have an overall goal for which the athlete will identify a number of process goals that help focus on specific aspects of the task. For each of these goals the athlete can use a trigger word (a word which instantly refocuses the athlete’s concentration to the goal) e.g. sprinting technique requires the athlete to focus on being tall, relaxed, smooth and to drive with the elbows - trigger word could be “technique”

realistic) can bring feelings of success. If athletes can see that they are achieving their short term goals and moving towards their long term goals then confidence grows. (continues in Edition 36.) Lopesan Golf Academy Update I would like to congratulate one of my young Pupils Teresa Gloria Casasus, who has achieved a fantastic place in the finals of the Junior Masters Tour

Elite. She will now progress to Scotland. The world’s best young golfers descend upon East Lothian, Scotland for the prestigious U.S. Kids Golf European Championship. More than 400 players from 30 nations will compete in Europe’s premier junior tournament to showcase the next generation of golfing stars. The championship is held on Scotland’s historic golf courses in East Lothian, including Gullane, Craigielaw and Longniddry. The event will take place in May of next year.

Athletes will develop a routine for competition that may include the night before, the morning, pre competition, competition and post competition routines. If these routines are appropriately structured then they can prove a useful aid to concentration. Confidence Confidence results from the comparison an athlete makes between the goal and their ability. The athlete will have selfconfidence if they believe they can achieve their goal. (Comes back to a quote of mine - “You only achieve what you believe”). When an athlete has self confidence they will tend to: persevere even when things are not going to plan, show enthusiasm, be positive in their approach and take their share of the responsibility in success and fail. To improve their self confidence, an athlete can use mental imagery to: • visualise previous good performance to remind them of the look and feel • imagine various scenarios and how they will cope with them Good goal setting (challenging yet

Music Scene By Gary Melling I’m taking Gary’s place this week to honour some of the Scandinavians artists.

Mohombis debut ablum “Movemeant” is scheduled to be released in January 2011 and will have Nelly, Nicole Scherzinger and Akon as guest artists.

First I would like to say I wish I could take up the whole paper, because there are so many good artists from Scandinavia, such as Petter, Medina, Rasmus Seebach, Basshunter, Lazee, Pandora, Robyn and Safri Duo but I will only write about two, so here is both mine and KISS Canaries’ favourite Scandinavian artists.

In an interview, Mohombi says that the single “Sex your body” on the upcoming album is his absolute favourite on the album, and you can hear it on KISS Canaries as well as other great tracks from Mohombi. Webpage: www.mohombi.com

Mohombi The 24 year old Mohombi came from Congo to Sweden in 1998 with his family and 6 years later he started the group Avalon together with his brother. The group sold over half a million records. In 2009 Mohombi went to L.A and was introduced to the famous producer “RedOne” (half-swedish, half Morrocan) and RedOne has signed Mohombi on his label 2101 Records. Mohombi’s debut single is called “Bumpy ride” and I don’t know how I can explain the song other than: I love it! It’s got great vocals and you will enjoy it just as much on the radio as in a club. Have a listen to it and I can almost guarantee you will find it hard to sit still.

Michael Boe Michael Boe started his career with the Danish dance duo “Disc Jockeyz”. They had one hit after the other on the European charts. His solo career started in 2009 with the single “Dine Løgne” but it was his second single “Amok” that really got me into this 22 year old.(23 in December, Happy Birthday) “Amok” with its mixture of Pop and Electronic elements is just brilliant. He sings in Danish and believe me, my Danish is not very good but that’s what I love with great music. Good music can be in any language.

Michael Boe will release a new single early 2011 and KISS Canaries will be one of the first to play it so keep it locked to Kiss 102.5 Webpage: www.MichaelBoe.dk Next week Gary’s back with more of his fun writing. To all the people in Playa del Inglés area, Get ready, KISS is coming very soon! Kiss Kiss/Zandra

Tim Boal Clinches ASP By Danny Alcock Tim Boal, 27 from France won the Islas Canarias Ocean & Earth Pro over rookie goofyfooter Jesse Mendes, 17 from Brazil in a closely fought out 35-minute final at the right-hand point break, El Confital. We witnessed an intense final day with Boal dominating his three heat performances to claim the 2010 title. Waves in the 3-4ft (1.0m) range wrapped along the reef during the high tide mark offering fun conditions for the final day of competition. The famous barrels that El Confital is famous for did not produce themselves during the finals however it was worth waiting for the improved swell as the strong field ripped to pieces the long right-hand waves. Claiming his first ASP Star-Series victory of the season, Tim Boal was never challenged showing all his experience in the tricky conditions. A former 2009 ASP Dream Tour’ member, Boal got off to an early start and built on his scores to eventually finish with a combined heat total of 14.23 out of 20. ‘Actually I was really nervous so I don’t know if it was showing or not but I was surfing kind of weird, and tense. The

waves I got probably could have got a lot better scores and Jesse was surfing really well and only needed a 6.50. I was lucky that it went kind of flat and I had priority so it is just the way it goes sometimes’.

Although the barrels were not on offer today, the conditions were still some of the best we have seen during the European season maintaining El Confital and the Islas Canarias Ocean & Earth Pro as a favourite amongst the athletes. We didn’t see the real Confital but two days ago it was pretty much the same as today. Tomorrow is going to be too big for here. On the European leg this year we have had some really good days and some really small days so it is great to finish like this in some decent waves for sure. Defending Islas Canarias Ocean & Earth Pro champion Jonathan Gonzalez, 30 from Tenerife headed the local charge and claimed equal third after losing narrowly in a tight fought semi-final battle. Tim’s opponent in the final was young Brazilian, Jesse Mendes. Mendes showed incredible flair right through the heat but just fell short of the mark. ‘It is hard but you have to learn and you learn more when you lose so that is what

I am doing’. Wise words from the 17 year old and we will see him and the rest of the competitors when they return to our shores next year. ARC 2010 - The Biggest Ever Transatlantic Rally Prepares to Leave From Gran Canaria

The 25th edition of the ARC will be the biggest ever as 250 yachts from 28 nations prepare for a record breaking ARC transatlantic crossing from Gran Canaria. The ARC is celebrating its 25th edition this year and to mark 25 rallies since the first ARC in 1986, World Cruising Club (the organisers of the event) are planning an enhanced programme of events in Las Palmas and Saint Lucia, the start and finish ports of the rally. “We want to make it a very special occasion” says Andrew Bishop, “and will be adding some extra touches to the programme.” The “inventor “ of the ARC returns to visit Veteran sailor and cruising author Jimmy Cornell who established the ARC will be back in Las Palmas to wish the 2010 crews bon-voyage and give one of his renowned talks about his sailing life and experiences. Sailing in ARC 1986 and ARC 2010 An interesting point this year is the amount of boats and people who took part in 1986 and will also cross when ARC 2010 sets out on Sunday. Three ARC’86 skippers are confirmed as participants in ARC 2010. Long time ARC supporters Manfred Kerstan of Albatros (Swan 62RS) who sailed his previous yacht, also called Albatros in the first rally. Christoph von Reibnitz, who sailed Roter Baron in ’86 and now has the classic Henry Gruber yawl Peter von Seestermühe; plus Norwegians Anne Lise and Ståle Larsen who sailed a Sweden 340 Viking Crusader in ’86 and are back with their newer Sweden 40 also called Viking Crusader. Moonshadow, a Deerfoot 62, one of the original ARC 1986 yachts will sail again in 2010, though with a different owner, American sailor George Backhus. ARC Weather ‘guru’ Chris Tibbs, now ARC support staff is also a former ARC’86 skipper, as is official ARC finish liner photographer, Tim Wright.

the years the rally has become even Fulham and Sunderland, on Tuesday he more international as more nations have withdrew from the Brazil squad set to embraced cruising sailing, especially play Argentina. from the countries of Eastern Europe. This year the yacht owners are from 28 different nationalities, though the United Kingdom (39%) is still the largest grouping. Also well represented in the fleet are Norway (11%) and Germany (8%). Other countries with significant entry numbers include: Italy, Spain, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, USA and the Russian Federation. Yachts; The Stats The typical ARC boat this year is just under 9 years old and 14.6m (47ft) LOA. In fact, 48% of the boats are between 1215m (40-50ft) whilst a significant number (17%) below 12m (40ft), including the smallest entry this year Honningpupp II (NOR) a 1979 Comfort 32 at 9.50m The Biggest Yacht: Texel (GBR), a 35m classic schooner is also the oldest yacht in the fleet launched in 1921. Another old timer is ARC regular, Peter von Seestermühe (GER), a 1936 Henry Gruber yawl. Veteran Whitbread Round the World yacht Steinlager 2 (GBR) is also taking part. The Big Off On Sunday, 21st November, ARC 2010 will leave the marina (Muelle deportivo) to cross the Atlantic on it’s 25th anniversary. It will be an amazing spectacle and well worth watching. Visible from anywhere on the east coast of las Palmas/Telde but to experience the real atmosphere, you should really head down to the marina early on Sunday. Take part in history! Where – Marina Las Palmas When – Sunday 21st November midday (but get there early) Why – This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the ARC and will host an unprecedented number of yachts on the start line. History will be made and the visual impact will be immense. By Danny Alcock

John Terry could be out for months

A Chelsea source told BBC Sport: “It could be months although that’s the pessimistic view. “We don’t know the root of the pain and he can’t keep struggling so he has to get to the source of the problem.”

The Biggest Yet… ARC 2010 is set to be the biggest rally yet with 250 yachts expected to cross the start line on November 21st. Over

Chelsea have also announced that Terry’s fellow first-choice centre-back Alex will be out for “approximately six to eight weeks” to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his injured knee in the coming days. After missing the club’s matches against

but is hoping to rekindle her partnership with Pendleton in the build-up to 2012. “Next year I want to include track cycling in the whole picture again,” she said. “That will mean I have the track World Championships and the BMX World Championships in the same year. It should be a packed year but it will be OK. “The track comes first in the plan for the Olympics in London, which is great because it gives me a good run through to the BMX event which happens a week and a half later. It couldn’t fit more perfect so I’ll go for both. “If I can go to London and create a bit of history then that will be amazing. If I get a silver or a bronze, if I’ve given my best that’s all I can do.”

The news is a blow for Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti who also has persistent injuries to midfielder Frank Lampard to contend with, while striker Didier Drogba is playing despite a recent bout of malaria. Terry, 29, is already seeing a variety of specialists in an effort to cure the injury but so far nobody has identified what is wrong with the centre-back. A Chelsea spokesman said: “John reported for training this morning. He met with club doctors and the medical team and discussed plans to continue seeing various specialists to try to find a solution to the nerve problems he has been experiencing in his right leg.” The injury has been troubling the defender since the end of last season and despite resting for three weeks between the end of the World Cup and the start of the Premier League season, the problem has not cleared up.

Britain’s Shanaze Reade is targeting a golden double in the BMX and track events at the London 2012 Olympics.

Andy Murray to face Roger Federer in ATP Finals group

Andy Murray will play world number two Roger Federer in the round-robin stage of the ATP World Tour Finals in London, which start on Sunday. The British number one will face Federer, Robin Soderling and David Ferrer in Group B, with the top two making the semi-finals. World number one Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Tomas Berdych and Andy Roddick make up Group A. Murray will play Soderling in the opening match at 1400 GMT on Sunday. Federer will take on Ferrer at 2000 GMT, while Monday’s schedule sees Djokovic against Berdych at 1400 GMT, with Nadal and Roddick “It’s an incredible atmosphere, a huge arena and it’s one of the biggest competitions in tennis behind the Grand Slams, so I’m really looking forward to it,”

Chelsea captain John Terry could be out for “months” with a nerve problem in his right leg. The mystery injury forced Terry to miss Sunday’s 3-0 home defeat by Sunderland and he has also pulled out of England’s friendly against France on Wednesday.

The three-time world BMX champion saw her medal hopes at the Beijing Olympics ended when she crashed near the finish. Reade has enjoyed success on the track, winning the 2007 and 2008 team sprints at the UCI Track World Championships with Victoria Pendleton. “Competing on the BMX and on the track in 2012 has always been my dream,” the 22-year-old from Crewe said. Reade missed out on his year’s Track World Championships in Copenhagen

“The last couple of weeks weren’t as good as I’d have liked, although I actually won my first doubles competition with my brother, which was cool, but playing in front of a home crowd is always great. “It would be a big one psychologically to win, so I’ll give it my best shot.” Murray slipped one place in the latest world rankings on Monday when he was passed by Sweden’s Soderling, which left open the possibility that he would be drawn in the same group in London as 2008 champion and world number three Djokovic. The 23-year-old Scot will be relieved to have avoided the Serb, although it is arguable whether the in-form Soderling will prove any less testing an opponent.
