The Price Is Right – Where Canarians Go To Shop Our regular readers may recall that a few editions ago we featured the best place to buy car spare parts, fruit and vegetables, German sausages, pies, meats and other well priced but quality goods. We promised you more of the same, so with this in mind I decided to ask the knowledgeable Werner, of Phoenix Trans Internacional, to take me around more shops and businesses, who offered good quality items or services, and who charged reasonable prices. This trip was centred around Arinaga, Playa de Arinaga and Vecindario. We have included photos of the businesses with their telephone numbers where possible, just in case you need to ask directions, but remember most of them will speak little or no English so take your ‘Spanish’ friend with you! Many of you who have already visited Vecindario will have seen the main street, Avenida de Gran Canaria, packed with shops and businesses, and which Werner tells me have really competitive prices. This is one of the reasons that you will find many ‘Canarian’ shoppers thronging the busy pavements and shopping centres. Our first stop, which many of you may know, was El Kilo. It’s not far from the Atlantico commercial centre; just next to ‘El Corte Ingles Opportunidades’. The shop is large and bright and stocks practically everything you would need to furnish a house or apartment. From gaily coloured cushions - at just 2.50€ each - to bedding, curtaining, crockery, bathroom items, settee throws, cutlery and much much more. The shop in Vecindario is part of a chain, with the other smaller outlets being scattered throughout the surrounding area. A great place to shop for all your household items at very reasonable prices.
around 10€ per kilo, which Werner assured me were excellent for the barbecue.
Next we moved onto the street where we found two businesses, side by side, for car repairs Gerstenmaier and car body paint repairs, Juan Vega. These are well known and well used by the Canarian vehicle owner with prices far below those of the larger ‘chain-type’ businesses. The work is carried out with great care and pride and with the amount of scrapes and bangs which always seem to happen in the very narrow and tight parking spaces in supermarket carparks, these two companies are always kept very busy!
Still in the area of Vecindario, but now on the industrial estate nearby, our next stop was a large warehouse, ‘Tofal S.A’. On entering the warehouse you could see stack upon stack of wood of all sizes, shapes and thickness; ideal for the DIY enthusiast who loves trying their hand at building jobs. However, more importantly here is the section of custom designed and built kitchens. A good range of styles, colours and accessories is on display, and you really can ‘mix and match’ for a fraction of the price you would pay in the ‘designer’ kitchen shops. At the back of the warehouse is where the units are made, so I would imagine delivery timescale is cut down considerably.
Still on the theme of cars, we visited the company Iveco. This is a family owned and run business who specialise in all aspects of diesel vehicles.
Just a few doors away we came to Hermet the butchers. Again part of a growing chain, with one in Playa del Ingles. I was quite surprised at the size of this shop compared to the one in Playa del Ingles, especially the fresh meat counter. I’m not really convinced about buying frozen meat, chicken and fish - which Hermet specialises in – but Werner explained that if you are a family trying to survive on a low budget, these shops offer excellent value for money. Chicken quarters were priced at around 2.99€ per kilo, frozen cod about the same, but the item which ‘Canarian families’ go mad for are the langoustines; boxes and boxes of them were available in all sizes. I looked at the fresh meat counter to compare prices with our usual supermarkets and did find a significant difference. Huge frozen fish were displayed for
Not too far away from Tofal S.A. is Tomas Carbonell, a specialist who supplies all kinds of blinds and awnings. This company is one of just two companies on the island who are able to design to specification, size, colour and weight. Like all the companies we have listed their prices are very competitive and service is excellent.
And finally a really great ‘find’ for all of us who love our air conditioning turned up high in our cars, but then think it has stopped working – Radiadores Paco. The mechanics here check out the air conditioning units in special liquid tanks to see if there really is a problem or it’s just that the unit needs more gas.
It was explained to me that if we own a car which is older than four years and the air conditioning doesn’t seem to be working as well as it used to, all

it normally needs is ‘topping up’, not a replacement unit which costs much more. A good tip which I will definitely remember for the future. Radiadores Paco also checks, repairs and supplies car radiators.
As we found ourselves making our way back towards the main road, Werner stopped at a printing shop just next to the two car/body repair places. He told me that this printer, Graficas Tirma, was one of the best quality at the keenest prices he had found. They will print everything from business cards to flyers to large banners and just as important the quality and colour is always sharp and bright.
As we crossed the motorway and made our way into the industrial estate of Arinaga, Werner pointed out many different types of companies, including his own warehouse of course, until we arrived at Ronandez S.A.,which he claims to be the best ‘ferreteria’(ironmonger) on the island. If it’s not the best, it’s certainly one of the biggest. Every type of door handle, tools, nails, equipment could be found here. Row upon row, shelf upon shelf of everything you could want. He was quick to point out that the two men buying items sported polo shirts advertising their own ironmongers but were purchasing goods from Ronandez. Great PR for the company!

Local News
From here we crossed one of the many strange roundabouts, (where you have to ‘give way’ even though you are already on the roundabout), to a modern and bright warehouse who stock everything for our ‘throw away’ society. Brightly coloured paper plates, cups and serviettes; plastic cutlery and wonderfully scented candles in all sizes. Normally as suppliers to trade, perhaps PAP Star would supply items for your ‘little ones’ birthday party, or if not, you could ask your local friendly shop to buy the things you need.
A quick stop at Wurth, a German supplier for professional tools and accessories to the building trade. Browsing through their huge catalogue, this has to be the builders dream. It is open to the public as well as tradesmen. They have just moved to their new premises to gain more space for newly arrived stock.
We crossed back underneath the GC1 motorway to the beginning of Avenida de Gran Canaria, Vecindario and Werner explained that if you come to this main avenue in the evening it is heaving with people, mostly Canarians of course; shopping, chatting, eating and drinking in an atmosphere of warmth and good humoured banter. As we parked, Werner pointed out one of the most famous bar/cafe on the street, El Ficus. Canarians gather here by the dozen, and on Sundays the bar sells nearly 5,000 whole grilled chickens to the waiting queue which stretches around the block. For 5€ the chicken will feed a family on a low budget. The bar/cafe also sells typical Canarian deserts and salads.
Traffic is always very slow along this main street, so we decided to leave the car and walk one street back, keeping Avda de Gran Canaria on our right (the start of the main street was from the Vecindario end).
Our final stop in the area was down towards the beach to Playa de Arinaga. Winding through the residential streets within a few minutes we came to Estevez, - a well kept Canarian secret. Estevez is a fishmonger ‘par excellence’. The business is family owned and at one time stretched nearly the length of the street. Their fish is the freshest to be found and is fished daily from the waters nearby. Previously the multimillionaire owner had small swimming pools lining the street, teeming with all kinds of fish, yours for the taking, or buying should I say. Now there is just one small shop, but the quality and choice is second to none. If you are not sure what the Spanish name is for the fish you want, all you need to do is look at the large picture chart and ask. The staff will let you know when and what time, if it’s available, you can come back. Truly a fish lovers’ delight.
Our next stop was another well kept Canarian secret. Not for them the traditional ‘gofio’ bought from the many supermarkets, this was the real thing and at a fraction of the price you would normally pay. The smell as we entered was fantastic; no name to the business but everyone knows where they are so just ask.

Another quick stop to the food pet suppliers, Pedro Mayor Perez, where they supply large bags of food for your domestic and farm animals. They even sell live hens on certain days. Not too easy to find but the address is Calle 1st Mayo, 166, so get your sat nav to take you there.
From here we visited a little electrical repair shop, Chano Borden. Again family owned and run they will repair everything from washing machines to dish washers, vacuum cleaners, toasters and that all important microwave oven for the busy worker who doesn’t have the time to prepare a time consuming meal.
Our journey was nearing its’ end, but as we crawled along the Avda de Gran Canaria I had time to take a photo of the Mata XXXL shop. As the name says, this business specialises in clothing for the larger person. Both men and women are catered for and it seems to be doing a thriving business. I’m not too sure what kind of garments are available as the shop is sited on a busy junction with little parking, but Werner assures me it’s good. Not too sure though about Werners’ taste in clothing as he seems to love his cropped trousers and tees’ However, it’s probably worth taking a look if you are built on the more generous side.
It’s quite unique and stretches back a considerable distance. The prices were extremely good and the assistant a pleasant, knowledgeable young lady. Definitely one to visit for all you wine lovers! And now our final stop, it’s back to the industrial estate in Vecindario to vist the Bodega 7 Islas. This was by far my favourite place. A traditional Spanish bodega selling all kinds of wines from the Canary Islands and mainland Spain. But it is more than just a bodega, it’s full of lovely little gifts all depicting the making, bottling and drinking of fine wines, even down to a replica of the shop made out of corks.
Well readers, I hope you enjoyed my second journey and have found the places I visited on your behalf of interest. Do remember that most of the businesses do not have anyone who speaks English (this is where the Canarians shop!), so brush up on your Spanish lessons, which Theresa is teaching you, and have a go. My thanks go to the ever patient Werner of Phoenix Trans Internacional who so kindly shares his knowledge of the best places to shop on Gran Canaria where the quality is good and –The Price is Right. The Concord Torch will start its tour in Maspalomas Gran Canaria in defense of fair play. Concord Torch will travel the island of Gran Canaria to promote fair play and the team will leave next Thursday April 22 at 9:00 hours from the gates of the former municipal offices, situated in the Plaza de la Constitution Maspalomas and the act will assist authorities in our municipality. The event is organized by the Technical Committee of Referees Interinsular Football Federation of Las Palmas, on the occasion of the XIX-Clinic Tagoror International Referees and Futsal Cup, with the support of the Department of Sports, and is to support fair play, understanding and respect towards referees, regardless of the discipline in which they operate. During the tour of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Concord Torch will be carried by children from various schools in San Fernando on a journey that will take it past South Park, Oasis Bar, Colegio Marcial Franco, Maspalomas Stadium, College St. Fernando reaching the Viuda de Franco and then passed into the hands of referees that will represent several municipalities of Gran Canaria to finish at Santa Maria de Guia.
Trip for walkers to the Cañadas del Teide. The Department of Sports, headed by the Mayor D. Alamo Carlos Cabrera, has scheduled a trip to the island of Tenerife, as part of the Municipal Hiking Program. Two walks are being planned for Cañadas del Teide on the weekend of 8th to 9th May. All those hikers who want to register can do so from today until April 30th, at the Estadio Municipal de Maspalomas and the Municipal Pavilion of the board. The price is 191€ for residents in the Canaries and places are limited. The fee includes transfers from Maspalomas, the return from Agaete, Fred Olsen ferry, all travel in Tenerife, hotel in Tenerife Nivaria, bed and breakfast, lunch, dinner and lunch day 8 and day 9. The price also includes the services of guides on the walk and liability insurance. The low price is possible depending on the number of registrations for group discount. The walks will be at an altitude of between 2,000 and 2,500 mts. and are considered average; the first takes place on the slopes of Pico Viejo and on Sunday on El Portillo, La Fortaleza.

European Skies ‘Shutdown’ Most of us will have been following the news on the huge impact the volcanic eruption in Iceland has had on our European flight schedules, and with this in mind The Canary News spent a day in Las Palmas airport to find out what the passengers had to say and what impact it has had on their lives so far.
The departure terminal for ‘flight only’ was quite a different story. The terminal was packed with people, some having been there for nearly three days. We spoke to a couple from Sweden who had been in the airport since Saturday

other northern airports. As before, the couple were resigned to finding the best way they could to get home. In fact they looked upon it as quite an adventure, although their teenage son seemed to be completely bored about the whole thing. The story was the same whomever we spoke to, although quite a few passengers were disgruntled by the fact that the UK government has been ‘slow off the mark’ in trying to help them. Many were sleeping in the airport terminal with no more money for food and drink and when they asked to re-book their hotel rooms they found the prices had nearly tripled! Not a good sign for our tourist industry.
The airport terminal was relatively quiet when I arrived and after parking the car I made my way into the departures terminal where most of the ‘package holiday flights’ were due to take off. Only a very small number of people were around waiting to be updated on the events. This was due to the fact that the main tour operators, TUI and Thomas Cook had already informed their clients of the situation and were making alternative arrangements to ensure they didn’t go to the airport unnecessarily.

morning, now three days, who told us that there was no option open to them. They were resigned to constantly checking with their airlines to see if other routes were available but until then were un-successful. They were however very cheerful and realised that nothing could be done.
We then spoke to a couple from York – their first visit to Gran Canaria – who told us that they had decided to take a flight to Barcelona, hire a car and drive to the French border, where they hoped to either try the ferry from Santander, or failing this, drive through France and see if they could pick up ferry tickets from either Calais or Dunkirk. No flights were available from Paris or
Generally speaking though people realised that this was an ‘act of God’ (great for the insurance companies who won’t pay out on this) and just tried to make the best of things. Let’s hope we return to normal very soon, although Gran Canaria could really do without the impact this will have on our tourist industry. By Ann Turner
Dewsbury girl, 12, killed by hit-and-run driver in Puerto Rico A HOLIDAY for two families ended in tragedy when a hit-and-run driver knocked down two twelve year olds, killing one and badly injuring the other. The tragedy happened on Sunday evening in the resort of Puerto Rico, on the south coast of Gran Canaria, as the two families were strolling in the town. A blue Ford Escort mounted the pavement and knocked down the two children. Abigail Harris was killed and Thomas Thackeray badly injured. Both came from Dewsbury. The car then drove on. The accident happened next to a
taxi rank and one of the drivers gave chase while other witnesses called the emergency services. The taxi driver caught up with the escaping car and spoke to the driver, a man in his fifties, when the vehicle pulled-up some 300 yards away. “I advised him not to flee, that it would be worse, and the guy turned round and went back to the scene of the accident,” the cabbie told the Diario de Las Palmas local newspaper. The man, a Colombian, was arrested by the paramilitary Civil Guard along with his passenger, reported to be his daughter.
Two ambulances were on the scene within minutes but there was nothing they could do for Abigail. A helicopter was also summoned but was not needed. Thomas was taken to hospital in one of the ambulances after receiving treatment at the scene. ‘Little sweetheart’ Abigail had been celebrating her sister’s birthday and was walking in the resort when the incident happened. Her parents, Nicola and Tony Harris, said in a statement: “Abbi, the youngest, was and always will remain,
the ‘little sweetheart’ of her mum and dad.” They said Abigail had been taken from them in “particularly tragic circumstances”. Members of the two families were also treated for shock. Police in Mogan will continue their inquiries to discover who was really at the wheel when the horrific accident happened. Our deepest sympathies go to the familes.

Letters to the Editor
Please write to us and The Canary News will award the Letter of the Week a Free COMBO meal at Fusion Restaurant & Lounge Bar in Arguineguin (See advertisement below for address) The Canary News reserves the right to edit your letters and accepts no responsility for readers’ opinions.
Letter of the week To the Editor of The Canary News, I am English & bought a flat 4 years ago in San Fernando that needed work. 6 months after buying it unfortunately the property bubble burst so I have lost a considerable amount on it and will be in negative equity for years to come (Glad to know I am not alone!!!).
may help other people who are thinking of getting residencias because they are here for two months or more a year. If you aren’t working or buying property you do not need one. If you get one you will forfeit your right to import household goods and a car import duty free, unless you do so within one year of obtaining the residencia.
The first thing that was decided was that it needed a new bathroom. I don’t have a great deal of money so was on the lookout for bargains. One year in the sales I bought a bowl and unit, the next the toilet cistern. Finally I managed to scrape enough money together for tiles a shower and shower column.
For those of us who only come here for a few months at a time and get a residencia and then later decide to move here permanently, it is yet another trap for trying to comply with regulations. So be warned.
I had three companies ready to give me estimates. The old bath/ sink/ toilet needed removing, new PVC pipes run and the new bathroom tiles over existing tiles.
Tim Clarke
I had a price in my head and a rough idea what I thought it would cost. The first estimate came in at 2000€, around 500 more than I was expecting; the second came in at 2400€, very disappointing.
Naviera Armas - racist policy?
I spoke to a good Spanish friend of mine and asked him to call the company for the third estimate. They came around and my Spanish friend posed as the owner of my flat. Low and behold - the estimate came in at 1250€,virtually half the price of the second estimate. The workmanship was to an extremely high standard, and in fact the guy was a perfectionist. I was always led to believe the Spanish were honest; NO, some of them are still out to rip off the foreigner! BEWARE ! Play them at their own game - stay one jump ahead! Gary Ashcroft Gary, glad to hear you managed to sort it out to your satisfaction. However, I wonder what the first two quotes would have been if your friend had asked? I don’t think we can ‘tar’ everyone with the same brush, as we know many honest and reliable Spanish tradesmen who don’t ‘rip off’ the foreigner – it’s just a case of shopping around as you would do back in the UK. Perhaps The Canary News could add a classified section with the contact details of businesses who provide a good service at reasonable price, although these would have to be verified of course. What do our readers think? Ed
First of all, thank you very much for the free meal at Fusions Restaurant for writing the letter of the week. We went there many years ago when it first opened and were not very impressed, but this time it was perfect. There was attentive service and great food, beautifully presented. We will go again. May I also thank you for suggesting that I contact Nicole at Phoenix who explained the problem very clearly. I will try to summarise her comments as it
Next time I have a problem I will contact you first!
Great to hear Phoenix helped you out and you enjoyed your meal. Thank you for feedback Tim. Ed
For readers who don´t know, the Spanish ferry company Naviera Armas offer a fantastically goodvalue offer for residents of the Canary Islands wishing to take a boat trip to Tenerife. For only 50€ in total, two people and one car can travel and return by ferry from Las Palmas to Santa Cruz in two and a half hours each way. On board there´s a pool, sundeck, restaurant, cinema rooms, bars and chill-out zones with sofas - a thoroughly enjoyable experience. However, having called first to check the details then booked online selecting the ‘paquete residentes’ as advised, we were dismayed on arrival to discover that my partner, despite many years´ residency in Gran Canaria, had to pay extra for not being originally from the European Union. Surely this is irrelevant for island residents, as is the case with half-price flights to the mainland, and discounted access to many hotels and superb attractions such as Loro Parque (19€ instead of 31). We pointed out that if their policy only applies to those born in the EU, then they should state this on their website at the time of booking and in their publicity.
Car park and the Hard Rock Cafe pavement area. Only yesterday I witnessed a yob who was swearing in foul language at a Scottish Lady because she had the cheek to say NO to him. He was British by his accent . The lady was visibly shaken and upset. I very nearly called the police but I immediately wondered why had I seen the same wretch for weeks on end and no one had moved him on or arrested him? I can only deduct that it is allowed and they have permission- they have been there for so long! Playa del Ingles please tidy up your act - this does not help to get our valuable tourists back again; on the contrary I know that couple will not be back - I spoke to them! Holiday homeowner When will the Tourist Board wake up to this particularly malicious activity. It’s hard enough to survive here without putting our tourists off from coming back. Ed Hello The Canary News, My wife, son and myself have just returned from a holiday on Gran Canaria. This was the first time we have visited as we normally holiday in Portugal as I am a golfing enthusiast and love to spend time out on the course. I heard from friends of mine about the golf courses in Gran Canaria so we decided to check them out. Yes, they are quite good but I was horrified at the prices – 90€ for just one game! This is nearly double the price we pay in Portugal or back home in the UK. How can these prices be justified? It was little wonder that the courses are virtually empty and that you can pick and choose your ‘t-off’ time. I would have thought that with the economic crisis every business would be looking at their prices in order to attract more people. Ok Gran Canaries has the year round weather, which is great, but how can anyone afford these prices for just one game. We are looking to buy a property near golf courses so we can spend a few months a year playing a game I love. My wife, who doesn’t play, loves to get out and about shopping, visiting historical sites etc. but again the big negative were the prices of eating and drinking.
However, we received a curt reply and no apology or agreement to consider our suggestion of specifying the exceptions to their special deal.
Sorry Gran Canaria I think we will pass on this one.
This isn´t about the money - it´s about being sold a ticket based on our residency numbers then charged extra at the last minute. At best, unclear and unfair. At worst, a racist policy.
Unfortunately, these are the prices the owners set, and their reasoning is that the Scandinavians seem content enough to pay them so they must be ok. The Scandinavian ‘season’ has now ended so who knows what will happen during the coming months. Ed
Theresa Coe and Nelson Brenes, Pasito Blanco Thank you for this useful information Theresa – yes, it does seem rather unfair. Ed I am a frequent visitor to the island but I am completely fed up with the hard sell, foul mouth individuals who try to sell visits to establishments using their scratch card “you are a lucky winner “methods on the pavement around the Yumbo Centre

Bazar Ani specialises in larger sizes and many of the drag artists use them for their costumes and accessories, which are
Founded in 1973 by owners Ani and Salvador, this family run business in San Fernando has absolutely everything you could need to plan a party, attend one of the many carnivals or just for those who love ‘dressing up’. The business is divided into two distinct parts; the ‘cellar’ area stocks the fancy dress items and accessories, whilst the ground floor specialises in top brand name underwear, haberdashery and jewellery. Don’t be deceived by the small entrance to the basement as this stretches
not the usual cheap quality you would normally find in a fancy dress shop. The materials are good quality and come from all over the world. Their clients come from far and wide to browse through their extensive collection, both tourists and residents alike, and on special occasions such as Christmas, Hallow’een and Carnival the shop is full of decorations and lights all pertinent to the particular theme. They even sell spooky music cd’s to really recreate the atmosphere of All Hallows Eve. Upstairs you will find many top name brands of underwear like Lejaby, Chantelle, Calvin Klein, Wonderbra, etc. etc. but the best yet for us ‘larger ladies’ is that cup sizes go up to an ‘f’- a real find over here! They also supply quality perfume and make up products, not just for everyday but also for television and theatrical use, so many of the ‘shows’ purchase their items here.
The two shops are open Mon-Sat, 9.30-13.30, then 16.30-20.30, closed on Sundays, and you can find them by going to the roundabout at the Mercurio Towers, take the exit for San Fernando then turn immediately first right, Bazar Ani is on the left. For further details please see their ad on page 16. So I know where I will be going in the future for fancy dress at really good prices (from 12€ - 150€), and as for their selection of underwear you won’t be able to ‘drag’ me away! By Debbie Wenn

Family Life
Depression – And how it affects Children In therapy practice, these children sense several unspoken messages from their depressed parent. One is, Don’t be happier than I am because then I’ll feel worse.
Sadness can be contagious. If exposed for a long time to a depressed person, we may become depressed ourselves. Since children are so dependent on their parents, perhaps the greatest contagion of depression occurs in the parent-child relationship.
Children who believe they’ve received this message often struggle with depression in their adult lives because they feel guilty if they’re happy. It’s as if they unconsciously think to themselves, It wouldn’t be fair for me to be happier than my parent. A second message is the opposite of the first. It says, Be happy or successful so I can feel better. By your accomplishments, make up for my deficiencies.
another person happy, or compensate for his or her own unhappiness, these offspring may feel they’ve failed their parent. A third impression received from a depressed parent may be, Don’t come to me with your problems, I’m too overwhelmed with my own. Children who believe this is what a depressed parent is covertly saying often grow up feeling lonely in their families. There may be no one in whom they can confide about their problems. A fourth message may come from a depressed parent in his or her later years. It says, Stay with me and take care of me. I’ll be so unhappy without you. This message places the children of aging parents in another difficult position. Often, they feel torn between guilt for not responding to their parent or resentment for having to do so.
Some years ago, a group of Yale psychiatric researchers found that children of seriously depressed mothers were nearly three times more likely to develop major depression than children of mothers who had never been depressed. They speculated that this may be due to genetic factors, poor parenting by the depressed parents or general stress in troubled families.
If you are a parent who is depressed, whatever you can do to relieve your depression will automatically help your children. In fact, 80 percent of good parenting is insuring your psychological needs are being met, your selfesteem is high and your marriage is strong.
Children from homes in which one or both parents are chronically or seriously depressed are not raised in a happy atmosphere. They may gain the impression that life is sad. In addition, depressed parents are often unable to fully meet their children’s emotional needs. Overwhelmed by their sadness, at times they may be unresponsive to their offspring. As a result, the children may grow up not feeling completely loved.
Adult children who have received this impression may be depressed because they’ve accepted, or given themselves, an impossible task. Since no one can make
If part of your depression was caused by being reared by a depressed parent, you have to somehow detach yourself from carrying your parent’s pain or feeling responsible for fixing it. It isn’t that you do not care or can’t be supportive, it’s just that the only person who can heal another person’s depression is the person him/herself.

How Can People Stranded Get Home? SPANISH AIRPORT HUB British Foreign Office Minister Chris Bryant headed to Spain, to oversee an operation to bring home Britons stranded by the suspension on flights. Spain has set itself up as an international hub for British travellers who are stuck in other parts of the world. It is unaffected by the volcanic cloud, meaning its airports can receive flights from the Americas, Africa and Asia.
Many of the travellers stranded overseas because of the flight disruption caused by the volcanic ash cloud are trying to find any means possible to get home. The UK government’s plan to rescue British travellers stranded by the volcanic ash cloud is developing but alternative routes, although lengthy, are available. Before travelling, check the most up-to-date details with British consular officials as the situation is subject to change. The Foreign Office has also set up a helpline for those stranded overseas: +44 207 008 0000.
David Miliband: “For those British citizens outside Europe, Madrid could be used as a hub” Foreign Secretary David Miliband said Britons arriving on flights from outside Europe to the hub in Madrid will be transferred by coach and rail to ports in northern France. British civil servants are in Spain and France to help staff reception centres for those requiring help. The FCO asked people to stay where they are and stay in contact with their airlines. It warned that it could be a number of weeks before everyone who is stranded can be repatriated.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown said it was important for British citizens to be aware that if they could get to a channel port, there would be a way to get them from Europe to the UK. Shadow transport secretary Theresa Villiers said stranded Britons needed a “clear assurance” from the government that plans were in place to bring them home. Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg said he hoped to be reunited with his three children, who were stuck in Spain, as soon as possible.
COACHES There are plans for 150 coaches to be sent over from the UK to Spain this week and the search is on in Spain and the UK for extra coaches.
CROSS-CHANNEL ROUTES The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has allowed ferry companies operating out of Dover to carry 10% more passengers than the usual legal limit for a limited time. But the extra passengers can only go on ships leaving in fair weather conditions during the day. P&O services between Dover and Calais are currently operating to schedule. It said it could take bookings at the port but warned that space was limited and not guaranteed. Eurotunnel says it is putting on additional services through the week. ADDITIONAL FLIGHTS Ryanair says it will operate additional flights on Wednesday and Thursday from the Canary Islands to allow stranded passengers to at least reach mainland Europe. But onward travel from Madrid will be at each passenger’s expense, the airline warns.
The Foreign Office says the first 50 coaches to leave Britain for Madrid should depart on Wednesday but it is not clear when they will begin collecting stranded passengers. Mr Miliband said the Department for Transport was organising a schedule so coaches would be in place in Madrid to meet long-haul flights as they arrive. But holiday-makers who have been staying in the EU and are in Madrid are being advised to make their own way to the channel ports. Eurolines will be adding extra coaches but says its services are generally running as normal. Travel company Low Cost Holidays has also laid on extra coach services from Madrid city centre travelling to London Gatwick. ROYAL NAVY SHIPS Royal Navy ships have been sent across the channel to pick up stranded travellers. Prime Minister Gordon Brown said there was space for people to travel on these vessels. “We are saying to people, there is capacity available at the ferry ports. If people are trying to get back from Europe, they should use the facilities available,” he said.
Transport Secretary Lord Adonis said the safety of passengers was of “paramount concern” and it was something that should not be compromised. He said: “We are maintaining increased capacity for passengers to cross the channel. In total there are an extra 20,000 passenger places a day across Eurostar, Eurotunnel and the ferries. HMS Ocean and HMS Ark Royal are on standby to provide additional capacity, so that all travellers who arrive at the channel ports can be conveyed home.”

Diary of a Princess with Nina Blaafjell In recent years blogs have become a popular part of the internet. One of the fastest growing areas of blogging is what is termed the ”mummy blogs”.
These blogs focus on all things surrounding parenting issues. One of the most popular blogs in this genre in Scandinavia is Prinsessans Dagbok or ‘the diary of a princess’. The blog is written by 26 year old Josefine Aamodt. She is a Swede living in Oslo with her Norwegian husband and two children. Josefine started the blog in 2005, and at the beginning of April Josefine and her family came to Gran Canaria for a holiday and agreed to talk to The Canary News about the blog. When Josefine started the blog this area of the internet was in its infancy and the main reasoning at the time was that she liked to read other blogs and in order to leave comments you needed to have a blog yourself. Furthermore, having her family in Sweden but living in Norway it seemed like a good way of updating the family on events in her life. After she met her husband Eivind and became pregnant she updated the blog on a regular basis. Her blog also was mentioned in the Scandinavian media and became more and more popular. The blog has now become so very popular that she manages to obtain a respectable income from advertising on her site. Josefine featured frequently in articles and photos in magazines both in Sweden and Norway. A Mummy Blog does of course mainly feature issues surrounding parenting and children. Josefine blogs about all areas of her life and the blog features her children and family. However, Josefine says she finds it easy to filter what she wants to share with the public and what she wants to keep private. She is aware that as the children get older she can’t write as much about them or specific issues surrounding them as she is doing at the moment. Her family are used photographers and are happy to participate in it. Her husband fully supports her blog although he does not feature in it as much as her and the children but she has persuaded a number of her own friends and family to start their own blogs..
Josefine has a loyal readership, but much of what she writes is her own personal opinion so there will always be some level of unwanted attention or negative comments. She says she knows even before she has posted entries, which ones will attract comments and which will not. It is obvious that although the comments are a reaction to entries she has posted they are just as much an area for those who read the blog to exchange opinions with each other. As for unwanted attention she has had one rather strange experience. Without her being aware of it someone created a facebook profile for Josefine using her maiden name. She only found out when she received an email at her current address from a man she had supposedly been corresponding with on facebook and who had travelled to Oslo from Sweden to meet her and who was very disappointed to find out that she was married and had children! The blog focuses on the day-to-day life of a mother and issues surrounding this. Hot topics have been breastfeeding, childcare and getting your child to sleep through the night. In addition the blog focuses on fashion both for mum and children. Josefine herself is very fashionable and stylish which has led to cooperation with several Norwegian clothing brands. She also likes to dress her two children Elian and Ella in fashionable children’s clothes and readers are always posting comments asking about their clothes. She also receives a great deal of free clothing and other items both for herself and the children from companies after clever product placement. Joesfine has visited Gran Canaria many times on holiday and actually lived and worked in Playa del Ingles for a time. She has also been back with her family a couple of times, and says the main reason for coming here is weather, short flight time and child friendly hotels like the Orquidea in San Agustin where they stayed this time. Horoscopes
ARIES Mar 21 - April 20 Some say that nature is all about the ‘survival of the fittest’. That is a very bleak way to look at life. Why can’t it be about the survival of the nicest, the kindest, the friendliest or the most open- minded?
TAURUS April 23 - May 21 With just a tiny pin, you can burst an enormous balloon. It doesn’t take much. A moment’s contact will bring about the change. Balloons, of course, are wonderful things. It is always sad to see the air come out of them. GEMINI May 22 - June 21 No matter how urgent a situation may seem to be, you won’t resolve a pressing issue by getting more deeply involved in it. A rare ‘Cosmic Cross’ is coming soon!
CANCER June 22 - July 23 New circumstances could soon arise in your life. These could render some of your current concerns irrelevant. You might then be left fighting a battle that you have, effectively, already won.
LEO July 24 - Aug 23 If one small change could make all the difference, why would you even think about making a big change? That would be like adding an entire packet of salt to your dinner, when all it needed was a pinch.
VIRGO Aug 24 - Sept 23 You have lately been getting quite an education. You have started to see old familiar situations in a new light. You may not feel any older than you were and you certainly don’t look any older but you are most definitely.
LIBRA Sept 24 - Oct 23 Recent events, though, have lifted you up and out of your normal situation. Learn from what you can see and you will steer the best possible course this weekend.
Scorpio Oct 24 - Nov 22 There are some things, this weekend, which you simply can’t see. Don’t just guess the answers to important questions. Go wherever you must go, in order to be sure of getting clear information. SAGITTARIUS Nov 23 - Dec 22 Expect an enjoyable weekend. No matter what has recently gone wrong, something very right has also been happening. Ultimately, that counts for far more. It is the reason why a problem is about to resolve.
CAPRICORN Dec 23 - Jan 20 Health and sanity are precious. When we put our physical wellbeing in jeopardy, we show our true self little respect. When we entertain ridiculous ideas, or allow ourselves to worry needlessly, we squander our most valuable emotional resources. AQUARIUS Jan 21 - Feb 19 Perhaps you can’t win but nor are you obliged to lose. Things will only go really wrong if you take a situation too seriously or allow worry to colour your judgement. Be patient.
PISCES Feb 20 - Mar 20 You may well be of the opinion that a recent development has been regrettable but it has had consequences that you are only now starting to recognise.

Spanish Lessons with Theresa Coe feminine (ending in ‘o’ or ‘a’) others are ‘neutral’, often ending in an ‘e’?
Lesson 16 Soundalikes Make it easy on yourself by opting to memorise the words that are closest to English. Here are some examples: NOUNS (things, or ‘cosas’ en español): el animal [ah-nee-MAL], la clase, [CLAH-seh], el color, [col-OR], una foto, la radio, la tele [TEHleh], una tarta (cake – sounds like tart), médico/a (doctor – sounds like ‘medic’), profesor(a) (teacher), dormitorio (bedroom – think: dormitory), salón (lounge), and el sofá, [soh-FAH]. Soundalike foods include: la pizza, la pasta, la lasaña, y el puré de patatas (mash – but sounds like purée). ADJECTIVES (describing words): contento/a, elegante, especial, excelente, famoso/a, fantástico/a, increíble, paciente (patient), popular, suficiente [soo-fiss-ee-EN-teh] meaning ‘enough’ – but sounds like ‘sufficient’; complicado/a, furioso/a, horrible, [oh-REE-bleh], terrible, and repugnante (disgusting – sounds like repugnant). Did you spot that while some adjectives here can be masculine or
Don´t forget to pronounce these words the Spanish way – especially the vowels - and to put the stress on the second-to-last syllable, unless the word ends in R, L or D, where you stress at the end. An accent will tell you where else to ‘push down’ if a word breaks this rule. VERBS (actions): if you have to guess, the majority of original verbs end in AR, and again, many sound like ‘high’ English, such as contar - to count or recount (tell); continuar (to continue), desear (to desire – as used by waiters: ¿Qué desea usted?); entrar (to enter/ come in), estudiar [ess-too-dee-AR] – sounds like (to) study; funcionar (to work, but only in the sense of something that functions); organisar (to organize), planear (to plan), preparar (to prepare) and seleccionar, (to select, or choose). If you put another verb first you don´t need to change these ‘infinitive’ forms, but remember to stress at the END when a word ends in ‘r’: Quieres entrar? Do you want to come in? Necesito preparar la cena. I need to prepare the dinner. ¡No puedo funcionar sin mi café! I can´t function without my coffee! More tips ‘n’ tricks Try to devise different ways to remember words: For instance, ‘I can´t remember your name ‘is no puedo recordar tu nombre. I learnt this one by
thinking of RECORDING info in my brain. And the word for address is la dirección – well, you give directions to your house, don´t you? To recall the word solo (only/alone) I think of George Michael going solo. Similarly mirar (to look/look at) could be learnt by thinking of the word mirador – or look out point. And most importantly, ¿Qué significa…? (What does it mean…? – literally ‘what signifies it?’), to which you can add the word you don´t get at the end. COPYCATS: When a word ends in ‘tion’ in English it goes to ción in Spanish. Recognise the following examples? Una condición, una colección, una estación (station/ season), una excepción, una infección, y una situación. These words are usually feminine with the accent telling us to ‘push down’ at the end. CHOOSE WHAT´S EASIEST: For many people, económico/a (economical) is easier to remember than barato (cheap), just as las personas is easier to recall than la gente to say ‘the people’. Similarly, no comprendo is more likely to stick than no entiendo as it sounds like ‘comprehend’, though both mean ‘I don´t understand’. For many, niños [NIN-yoss; children] is simpler to pronounce than hijos/hijas [EE-hoss; sons or daughters]. Finally, although you can say marido y mujer for husband and wife, it might be easier to remember esposo y esposa (which both sound similar to ‘spouse’). Next time I´ll share more ideas to help expand your vocabulary with minimum effort, as well as a look at avoiding the ‘false friends’ that can cause embarrassing slips.

Titanic Letter Auctioned The letter, composed five days before the disaster, was sold to an unidentified museum in Britain, which has yet to formally announce its purchase.
5 o’clock. The band played in the afternoon for tea, but I savour a cafe in the Verandah cafe with bread and butter and quite thought I should have to pay but anything and everything in the eating line is gratis.
Explaining the appeal of the artefact, Andrew Aldridge said: “The content is superb. It gives a real first person perspective of what life was like onboard, through the eyes of a first-class passenger, right down to the food, the size of the cabin and the decoration.”
“At 6 o’clock we anchor outside Cherbourg and two tugs with passengers came alongside. Owing to our little mishap at Southampton we were all one hour late and had dinner only at 7.30 instead of 7 o’clock as usual.”
While other letters exist, this is the best example of its kind due to the depth of its detail, he explained.
Mr Saalfeld, a German-born businessman who was en route to New York hoping to sell perfume concentrates, apparently name-dropped to good effect when it came to procuring a larger table at dinner.
The letter tells of Mr Saalfeld’s approval of a “luncheon” featuring soup, fillet of plaice, a loin chop with cauliflower and fried potatoes, Apple Manhattan and Rocquefort cheese, “washed down with a large Spaten beer iced”. Mr Saalfeld’s intimate letter A letter from a first-class passenger on board the Titanic has fetched £55,000 at auction - a record price for a piece of written correspondence from the ship. The piece was penned by Adolphe Saalfeld, on three sides of stationery from the doomed vessel, to his “wifey”, Gertrude, still home in Britain. His words give a rare glimpse into day-to-day life on the maiden voyage of the Titanic, which sank on April 15, 1912 with the loss of 1,517 lives after hitting an iceberg. The letter was one of 350 lots of White Star Line memorabilia sold yesterday by auctioneer Henry Aldridge and Son, in Devizes, Wiltshire.
A partial transcript of the letter, released by the auctioneer reads: “After leaving [Southampton] at noon we had quite a little excitement, as the tremendous suction of our steamer made all the hawsers of the SS New York snap as we passed her and she drifted on to our boat, a collision being averted by our stopping & our tugs coming to the rescue of the ‘New York’. “The weather is calm and fine, the sky overcast. There are only 370 First Class passengers. So far the boat does not move and goes very steadily. It is not nice to travel alone and leave you behind. I think you will have to come next time. “I had a long promenade and a doze for an hour up to

‘The Canarian Lawyer’ Community expenses in equal parts In our community we pay all expenses in equal parts and seems unreasonable as there are owners who have more square meters and pay the same as the smaller flats. What can we do if we want to change this unfair system? Ask the President in writing that for the next meeting it is included in the agenda, and submitted for approval to the Board of owners, for modification of the form of contribution to the community common expenses. At the moment you are paying equal parts, but you may request to pay it for coefficient of the property, i.e. that
each owner pays according to the square meters of the flat. You can also establish a mixed system - which is most common - and consists of some costs are equally divided - such as management or the invoice for lighting for example - and others by coefficient of property. The adoption of the new payment system requires a unanimous vote. The car papers Is it true that theft of the car documentation has increased in order to give the vehicle the benefit from the 2000E plan? Yes, the number of car robberies grows but not particularly for that reason. You
Your Questions Answered should keep the documentation with you or hidden in the vehicle, because if not, you will live a real nightmare with bureaucrats to put it all again in order. Charges for installation of lift We cannot start the already approved works of lift installation because a non-resident owner will not pay its’ part. He says that the ‘tenant for life’ who occupies the apartment has to pay it. From whom do we claim this? The community must claim from the owner anyway. Air- conditioners on the facade On the facade are installed several air-conditioners without permission of the community. Can we take them away?

Likewise, you can click on the Sounds icon set the sounds and for any action as you want. The same holds true for your Window Color and Screen Saver of choice. Other appearance settings can be accessed by clicking on the Windows Color icon, then clicking on “Advanced appearance settings”. The dialog that opens is very similar to previous versions of Windows.
Q. In Windows 7, I have my wallpaper, cursors, icons, sounds etc. all set up the way I want them, but installing or changing a theme destroys all my settings. How can I prevent this from happening? A. There are several ways to retain your setup. The icons (mouse pointers) and cursors are the easiest so I’ll cover them first. If you right click on your desktop, then select Personalize, you will see in the left pane two entries, “Change desktop icons” and “Change Mouse pointers”. If you click on these you will see the 2 dialogs on the right. In both of these, there is a setting that is checked by default that allows them to be changed with the themes, you can uncheck these, and themes will no longer change the mouse pointers or desktop icons automatically. Unfortunately, the other settings are not so easy to prevent from being changed. By default, when you click on Personalize, the themes are displayed. However, if all you want to do is change

Now, after you have things all set up like you want them, right click the desktop, select Personalize and when the window opens, you will see the first icon in the list named “Unsaved theme”. This theme contains all of your preferred settings. Right click on it and select Save theme. Give it a name like My Default, and precede the name with a hyphen (-) like -My Default. Now, this icon will always be shown first in the list of themes. Anytime you install a new theme or do anything else that may change your setup, you can simply click on this “-My Default” icon, and everything will be returned to the way you want it. This allows you to try out any of the other themes and easily return to your original theme. Should you change your mind at a later date, you can always create a new favorite theme. Note that you can delete any theme by right clicking on it and choosing Delete Theme so long as the theme you want to delete is not the currently active one.
Installation of air-conditioners on the facade depends on a dual authorization: one from the Town Hall and another, from the Community of Owners. If they have been installed, without permission for years, one could say that the installations are consolidated and prescribed action to remove them would be difficult.

Local News Continued from front page ...
The association submitted a formal application in January and initial verbal permission was granted, however, due to the delay in processing the application and the withdrawal of the verbal permission the association have lost out on valuable income. The few markets they managed to hold before the verbal permission was withdrawn brought an income of around 100€ every Tuesday. In this respect Mandy from the Aladdin’s Cave shop in the Ancora Centre has been invaluable, as she has helped sell items for the association. Mandy has also allowed the association to use her van to move items and has allowed families supported by the association to buy items from her and pay in instalments.
Food is distributed every Tuesday afternoon and the food provided is made up of donations and food purchased from suppliers. They distribute whatever food they have in addition to purchasing weekly basic items but The European Food Bank sends food only five times a year and in very small amounts. The Project also distributes donated items such as clothing, furniture, electrical items, bikes, toys, etc. The association contacted The Canary News, as they particularly wanted to highlight the tremendous effort and support made by the Norwegian community in Arguineguin during the winter months to support this worthy cause and the local community generally. Through the recording and sale of a cd and various other events organised by clubs such as the Los Amigos, Boccia and Bridge Clubs, the Norwegian community has raised in the region of 20,000€ in total. An incredible feat which should be applauded by us all and should shame the council of Mogan into doing something to help these poor unfortunate people. The number of families supported by the project has dramatically increased in the last year, making the efforts made by the Norwegian community very welcome indeed. At the moment more
than 320 people are being given food weekly and unfortunately the number is increasing every week. Of the families being helped by the association, around two thirds are Spanish or Canarian and the remainder are Moroccan, South American, Czech, Polish, Austrian & British. Around 50% are children. Despite optimistic official figures for the number of tourists visiting Gran Canaria, unemployment is at a record high. The Project gets around 5 new families joining every week. Unfortunately both on a national and local level politicians do not seem to have grasped the seriousness of the
problem or indeed come up with any workable solutions. The monthly allowance per family with children given by the government is 420€. This is a fixed amount and it does not matter if you have one child or 6 children, the amount remains the same. People without children receive practically no benefit to support themselves. Many elderly people did not pay into social security and now receive a non-contributory pension of 341€ per month. Others collect 500600€ per month but pay 400-500€ rent and cannot afford food as well as other expenses. The councillor in charge of
Social Welfare for Mogan, Carmen Rosa Hernandez Afonso, has only visited the project once in September 2009. Despite repeated requests by the association for meetings with the local council to coordinate efforts, they have had no response. Therefore the association receives no financial or logistical support from the local council. Their only concession was to lend the association their premises in Arguineguin, which first needed to be renovated to store food in and which they share with a church. In addition the Council has been very unsupportive of the association’s application for permission to hold a second-hand market outside their premises in Arguineguin on a Tuesday, to coincide with the local market held nearby.
There is a team of volunteers who are present every week to help prepare the boxes and distribute the food and they include Helen, Fabiola, Karima, Ramon, Antonio, Maria Jose, Mina & Miguel. Elsa and Leo were running the weekly market which they would like to continue doing if they can get the permit. Pedro holds a craft workshop to keep the children entertained while the parents are collecting food. Another volunteer, Eva brings bread almost every week donated by Anfi Spar. Without these volunteers and others who help out on a more casual basis, the project would not exist.
The Norwegian community are not only supporting the project financially but many also volunteer to help in other ways. Several Norwegian families have “adopted” local families and cover certain expenses for them such as food, water, electricity & property rates. They may meet the family or remain anonymous depending on their preference. They have also been purchasing refrigerators & washing machines for them. One Norwegian lady, Jorunn, spends every Tuesday evening driving to the village of Mogan to deliver food to save those who live there having to travel to Arguineguin to pick the food up. She has also arranged collections from friends to buy nappies. These are badly needed by families, as they are expensive. When The Canary News visited, several

Norwegians were there, dropping off food, clothing and other items they had collected. Amongst them was Mariann from the Norwegian Radio who was actually dropping off some food and children’s clothes. The Norwegian Radio has continually encouraged their listeners to donate to the project and to think of ways to raise money. Eli and Ronnaug from Club Los Amigos and the Norwegian Church in Arguineguin have worked tirelessly all winter raising funds. Many others have of course both helped to fundraise and donated generously. The Norwegians have also supported the local community and businesses by making an effort to patronise the bars and restaurants in the local area. A spokesperson from the Food Project said “We cannot thank the Norwegian community enough for all their help! They are excellent neighbours and their solidarity is an example to us all!” The Canary News would like to encourage local businesses to donate food to the project. We would also like to encourage holidaymakers to help the project by donating any leftover food. Families especially desparately need baby products, so if you have any leftover nappies or baby food ( it does not matter if packaging has been opened ) they could really use them. We are happy to collect items at Puerto Rico Diving in the Europa Centre in Puerto Rico. You can also contact the association on avlaslomas@gmail.com or by telephone 675831822. In Arguineguin they have a very successful project at the local Hiperdino Supermarket where there is a basket set up so people can donate an extra item of shopping which they have purchased. They

would really like to get a similar scheme set up in other supermarkets so if anyone can get their local supermarket to help and to take charge of collection, it would be very welcome. You can read more about the association in general at http:// moganresidentsnewsletter. blogspot.com/ and the food project specifically at http:// mogansolidaritynetwork. blogspot.com/ You can donate money to their bank account at la Caja de Ahorros del Mediterráneo (CAM) , sucursal de Arguineguín: (IBAN ES62) 2090 5702 60 0040064235. It’s an absolute disgrace that there is little or no help for these needy families, especially when you consider that a third of them are Spanish nationals and/or Canarians. This island has had it good for too long; tourists flocking in their thousands, pockets lined with ready cash supporting the local businesses, but when a crisis hits who is it that is helping the ‘native’ population – foreigners of course, and in particular the Norwegians. Mogan Council, please take note, will you ‘kill the goose that lays the golden egg’ by uncontrollable price hikes and an attitude of ‘look the other way?’

Barrie Mahoney was a teacher, head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands as a newspaper editor. He is still enjoying life in the sun as a writer and author.
Walking the dog Most days I take our dog, Bella, for a walk. We love her dearly, and inside our home she is a well behaved, loveable and playful friend - in fact, a delightful and valued member of the family. As a puppy, she looked just like a tiny fruit bat and these distinctive features still remain. She is loyal, inquisitive and likes to be at the centre of all that is going on. During our holidays, when she goes off to kennels, she plays happily with other dogs and, we are told, that she is no trouble at all. However, it is a very different matter whenever we are out for a walk together because she will growl and bark at any dog, cat or moving object that she sees. Dog experts tell us that is because she is trying to protect us and, given her background as an abandoned puppy, I tend to take their word for it. I also still remember the trauma when Bella slipped her collar and went missing for several hours in the busy city of Cartagena. As a result, she now wears a harness and I swore that I would never let her off her lead outside her home again. As a result if this deficiency in her all but perfect nature, Bella remains firmly at the end of a lead on short walks, but we use a long extending lead on open spaces. She seems to be quite happy with the arrangement. At least we are well aware of the flaws in Bella’s nature and take steps to ensure that she is safe, as well as ensuring that she does not annoy or inconvenience others.
One of the things that both annoys and distresses me, both in the Peninsular as well as the Canaries, is the tendency for many Spanish families to let their dogs roam freely by day and then returning home at night to eat and sleep. This used to be the traditional way,
generally having a fabulous time with their mates. The downside is that many a playful encounter with the ‘bitch across the road’ leads to the distress of yet more unwanted and abandoned puppies and this is something that is taking time for the locals to fully grasp. Although the neutering of dogs and cats is promoted on the island, this is a long process of education, and the costs are seen by many owners as being too high, particularly in a recession. You can imagine the annoying scenario when walking Bella on a lead. Sometimes an uncontrolled dog suddenly leaps forward to play with Bella. There is often no owner in sight resulting in many a tussle between dogs wanting to play and Bella who does not. On several occasions I have had words of abuse shouted in my direction, fortunately in Spanish so I could not really understand the finer details of what was being said, telling me that I should let Bella run off a lead and then there would be no trouble. Hmm, that’s what they think, but I tend to think that a few vital organs would go missing if I did!
but with increased traffic, the rural idyll has all but disappeared in most neighbourhoods and many dogs and cats are the cause of road accidents.

‘Beat the Heat’ Fashion For Men
It is a strange fact that even when most of the fashion designers are men, when it comes to trends, men generally take a back seat in their collection. Although gradually, the ubersexual men have come out from oblivion and have taken up the reins. The likes of Tom Ford, David Beckham, George Clooney, Johnny Depp, and the Bonds from Sean Connery, to Daniel Craig paved the way for the commoners to follow.
Today fashion doesn’t just consist of shaving and throwing on whatever is there in the wardrobe. The ubersexual has gone ahead and is actively participating in creating and adapting fashion. Today men not only choose their clothes with diligence, but are very particular about their accessories and even worry about rough skin. Cotton and other natural fibre like linen and seersucker suits are certainly being seen more and more in spring/ summer collections. There is something so romantic about them, perhaps a nod to another era. High-end designers like Giorgio Armani, Paul Smith and Etro all add cotton suits to their collections. This could well be a trend we will see for years to come. The Ease of a Cotton Suit What’s more, cotton suits are such a great alternative to summer weight wools. They are easily incorporated into a wardrobe as they can be worn with a tee as well as a shirt and tie. Also bear in mind that the cotton suits offered now are more sophisticated, making them better suited for the office or an evening out as opposed
to the country club look found in years past. To add more to its versatility, a cotton suit can easily be divided into individual pieces.
Linen Linen suits are a versatile addition to your wardrobe and are a comfortable and fashionable alternative, especially during the summer months. The light linen fabric allows the suit to be breathable making it comfortable to wear in hot weather, whilst allowing you to still look elegant. Light and breezy, linen suits are a stylish way of staying cool. What makes linen suits so attractive is the fact that there are many looks that can go with one. Try out this season’s hot new colours of orange, bright blue and violet or, if you are less adventurous, you can always stick to the traditional khaki, beige or neutral tones of brown, gray or white. For a professional yet stylish look, partner them with a light blue, beige or an ivory cotton shirt.
your feet, which would scream attitude and comfort. The best pick of the espadrilles this season would be from Ralph Lauren, Prada, Armani, Cole Haan, Toms etc. Strappy Sandals The absolute trendiest footwear this year is none other than strappy sandals. These sandals allow not only total comfort to your feet but also give you a million dollar “cool guy” appearance. So don’t look anywhere else and make the strappy sandals a must-have in your wardrobe for this year. Get them in various colours and match with jeans or Hawaiian crops. The best buy for strappy sandals would be from Chaco, reef sandals from Leather Smoothy, and from Kenneth Cole, Mark Nason etc. New-Wave Boat Shoes Nothing wrong with traditional brown boat shoes, but with everyone from Sperry to Gucci doing creative new riffs, why not go for something more up to date than the ones JFK sported? Try a streamlined new silhouette or a splashy colour instead.
Seersucker Seersucker is a thin, all-cotton fabric, commonly striped or checkered, used to make clothing for spring and summer wear. Seersucker is woven in such a way that some threads bunch together, giving the fabric a wrinkled appearance in places. This feature causes the fabric to be mostly held away from the skin when worn, facilitating improved heat dissipation and air circulation. It also means that ironing is not necessary. Seersucker, and pincord suits are ideal to beat the heat, as these are classic hot weather, lightweight, cool feeling suits. Mens Fashion Shoes 2010 Espadrilles Those who think espadrilles are for girls, think again. Originating in Pyrenees, these casual flat sandals usually have a canvas or cotton fabric upper and a rope or rope like soles. And when comfort is the keyword for the fashion trend 2010, then how could espadrilles not be one of the best trends in summer/spring 2010. So give your feet a duet of comfort and style with either the loafers (with closed back and closed toes) or the mules (with open back). Pick your style and flaunt

Men’s Basic Skin Care a shave brush (with products that are specifically designed for brush use) to lather directly onto the beard area. Wait 30-60 seconds and then shave. Rinse with cool water. Frequency: Once in the morning, or as needed. Order: Shave after cleansing and before toning. The best time to shave is in or immediately after a shower. Exceptions: Not required, if you use an electric razor or grow a beard.
Cleanser
Purpose: Removes dirt, dead skin cells, excess oil, and other pollutants. Helps to unclog pores and reduce the development and appearance of acne blemishes. Selection: Stronger, acid-based cleansers for very oily skin; creamy, lotion-type cleansers for very dry skin. Most cleansers are appropriate for all skin types. If your face feels “tight” or slightly irritated when it dries immediately after cleansing and before moisturizing, then the cleanser has removed too much of your skin’s protective oils. As a result, your skin will overproduce oil to compensate. This can lead to mid-day “shine” and clogged pores. Under these circumstances, it is best to select another cleanser with a higher moisturizing function. Application: Mix with tepid water. Use your hands or a gentle washcloth to apply directly to face and neck. Rinse with tepid water. Pat dry with a soft towel. Frequency: Once in the morning and once at night, before bed. Order: Cleanse before shaving and/or toning. Exceptions: None.
Shaving Cream/Gel
Purpose: Softens beard hair so that it is easier to cut. Creates a glide surface for the razor blade, greatly reducing the likelihood of razor burn and post-shave blemishes caused by ingrown hairs and razor bumps. Selection: Shave gels for very oily skin. Most shave creams and shave gels are appropriate for all skin types. Application: Mix with tepid water. Use the tips of your fingers or

Health and Beauty
Order: Use immediately after you shave and tone, and before you moisturize. Exceptions: Not required, if you regularly use moisturizer and do not experience problems with post-shave irritation.
Moisturiser
Purpose: Prevents moisture in the top layer of skin from evaporating, or absorbs into the top layer of skin to promote water retention. Selection: Oil, or silicon-based (occlusive) moisturisers for dry skin; oil-free (humectant) lotions for oily skin. Some “oil-free” moisturisers may, in fact, contain small amounts of oil emulsified in water. These do not tend to complicate oily skin.
Toner/Astringent
Purpose: Cleans pores. Removes cleanser or shaving residue. Restores the skin’s acid mantle (i.e. lowers elevated pH levels) after cleansing or shaving, and makes the skin less vulnerable to bacterial invasion. Reduces mid-day “shine” (i.e. excess oil build-up). Selection: Hydrating toner for normal to dry skin; toner-astringent for oily skin. Application: Moisten a cotton ball or cosmetics pad and swab face and neck. Frequency: As needed, though most commonly applied once in the morning and once at night, before bed. Order: Tone after cleansing or shaving. Tone as a midday treatment to remove dirt, excess oil, and other pollutants, or after prolonged sun exposure, to restore the skin’s acid mantle. Exceptions: Not required, if you use a pH-balanced cleanser (i.e. a cleanser that contains alpha or beta hydroxy acids).
After -Shave
Purpose: Restores moisture to the skin after it has been shaved. Relieves mild post-shave irritation. Soothes freshly inked tattoos (alternate use). Selection: Toning after-shave liquids for very oily or very sensitive skin. Most after-shaves are appropriate for all skin types. Application: Massage a dime-sized amount into freshly shaven skin. Frequency: Once in the morning, or as needed.
Application: Use the tips of your fingers to gently massage small dabs of moisturizer into your skin. Frequency: As needed, though most commonly applied once in the morning and once at night, before bed. Order: Moisturize after cleansing or shaving and toning. Exceptions: Not required, if you have very oily skin. Not required at night, unless you have very dry skin or follow an anti-ageing regimen.

Are Your Nails Talking to You? By Ann Mather, Celebrity Nutrition Advisor , Famouslyfit.com The outside of our body whether our skin, our hair or our nails - reflects the state of the overall health if the body from the inside! Our nails are a horn like protective covering at the end of our fingers and toes – both of which take quite a battering in our daily living. They are similar to the claws that we see on so many other animals. They are made of a very touch protein – keratin – just like animal hooves and horns. They are an appendage of our skin. Nails on our hands provide protection for the nerves in our fingertips, and on our toes they protect us from damage or injury.
Iron or Zinc - One of the most common signs of poor nail health are “white spots” or “white lines”. Whilst it is true to say that these may indicate a more serious disorder in a minority of cases, they are usually caused by an iron or zinc deficiency. Again, if you
Flat thinning nails tend to represent a vitamin B12 deficiency. Texture The texture of our nails is as important as the colour. Vertical ridges can indicate deficiencies in iron, poor absorption of minerals and vitamins generally, overall poor nutrition, or kidney problems. Vertical ridges may also suggest the onset of arthritis. Horizontal ridges can indicate physical or mental stress. And for the Outside We can also help to improve the health of our nails by looking at what we put on then on the outside. Obviously, if you constantly put your hands and nails into a harsh environment, it will start to show……..Wear gloves when washing up and doing housework…..If your hands have been exposed to abrasive or caustic products, clean them well and then treat them. You don’t need to spend a fortune on expensive cosmetic hand creams. There are plenty of natural oils that pamper your fingers and toes.
If you nails are easily damaged, are weak or covered in white marks or ridges, they are actually trying to tell you something – your body is suffering from some form of nutritional deficiency – which may result in a number of different disorders inside the body. The food we put in our bodies is the determinant of the health of our bodies. Our skin, hair and nails reflect that health! What Might the Deficiencies Be? Nails are made up primarily of protein so the first thing to consider is whether you are getting enough. White lines around the nail bed can be a sign of this. If you look at several other features on the FamousyFit.com site, you will know that the best sources of protein are from things that used to move – lean meats, fish, fowl! Calcium is also important for healthy nails. Without it, the nails lose their strength and become brittle and dry. There are loads of foods that are rich in calcium (not just dairy!) and it is important that you get lots of variety into your system. Green leafy vegetables, fish, nuts, pulses, sesame seeds and calcium supplements are all important.
are concerned, go and see your doctor, but it may just be that you need to take a zinc or iron supplement for a period of time, or up your consumption of seafood, poultry, seeds, spinach, eggs, and soya. The best way to ensure the health of your nails (and the health of your body as a whole) is to eat sufficient protein during the day, and lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts and seeds. And don’t forget our best friend – water. Our nails also need moisture……….
Coconut Oil One of the few significant plant sources of lauric acid. This medium chain fatty acid, which is also found in human milk, enhances brain function and the immune system. Palm Kernel When unrefined, this high saturation oil is the one of the most stable of oils providing strength and ultimate saturation to the skin.
Here is a little bit more information about the more common problems and what may cause them. If you are in any doubt about your health, or are concerned about your nails, you must see a medical practitioner for examination and advice. Discolouration
Vitamin B (most of the family) is important for the health of hair, skin and nails. Vitamin B generally improves the strength of nails, and Vitamin B12 also promotes growth and healthy colouring. Vitamin B comes from a wide variety of foods, including fish, meat, poultry, eggs, bran, avocado, seeds, green leafy vegetables, and nuts. Vitamin C is also critical. If you have enough vitamin C you will avoid hang nails and swelling of nail tissue. Vitamin C comes from kiwi, citrus fruits, most of your berries and currants, broccoli, tomatoes, and green peppers.
Discolouration can come from diabetes, stress, allergies, food intolerance, and simple illness. If the nail starts to turn green, it is likely that there is an infection in the nail bed or in your basic system! If the nail bed is bluish in colour, it can indicate lung disease, such as emphysema or asthma. Tiny dark black streaks can indicate a heart problem, whereas reddish-brown spots indicate a deficiency in folic acid, protein or Vitamin C. Yellowing nails are a sign of a number of possible internal disorders. These may include diabetes, respiratory or liver problems. White lines can signal something as common as a fever or as simple as a lack of iron or zinc, or could be liver, heart or kidney disease. Nail shapes The natural shape of our nails can also give an indication about the health of our body. Nails that tend to curl under can signal respiratory problems. Nails that are raised at the base can signal the same. Square, wide nails can be a result of a hormonal disorder.
Olive Oil The most stable vegetable oil, high in vitamin E, provides support to the liver and gallbladder (yes, no matter how you take it into the body). Here is What To Do Just Before Bedtime 1. Allow your nails to soak in a small bowl of oil or gently rub the oil into the nails 2. Cover with cotton gloves, cotton socks and allow to soak in 3. Sleep!

Is there a difference between David Godfrey, NLP Master Practitioner Regardless of your goals, all action and behaviour starts in your mind. Adopting a better lifestyle is about how you control your state of mind by the questions you ask yourself consistently. Most people get into the habit of asking rubbish questions! If you ask “WHY?” - You will probably make yourself feel worse and exacerbate the problem. You will feel overwhelmed and powerless….. “Why am I fat?” - “I am fat because I eat too much, I am lazy and I am weak” - Feel better? Of course not! If you ask “HOW?” - You will come up with constructive answers, feel positive, proactive and in control. “How can I achieve my ideal body weight permanently and enjoy the process?” “How can I succeed?” “How can I overcome this challenge?” Well, it is more challenging to ask “how”, but I feel much better already. Do you? This approach produces much better answers and leads you to a life worth living. Every morning ask What am I excited about? What am I grateful for? What specifically am I going to do today to ensure my continued progress towards my goals? Every time you reach for food ask How does this fuel and nourish my body or it just making me feel good? If you feel tempted to skip a training session ask How great will I feel after the session? What do I love about training? What are the rewards of training consistently? What can I focus on to increase my motivation and commitment? How can I make this training session fun? Every evening ask What was great about today? What have I learnt from today? How can I improve for next time? Asking and answering “HOW” and “WHAT” questions are so much more positive than “WHY” questions and will help you make significant improvements.

‘MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS....’
My young friend Sam asked me the other day, ‘What was your favourite fast food when you were growing up?’We didn’t have fast food when I was growing up,’ I informed him. ‘All the food was slow.’
the past has given me a nice warm glow...and a healthy appetite! Come on, let’s find a fast food outlet and I’ll treat you to breakfast.” I tell Sam.
ORT C COMF
ORNE
Sam orders, without a glance at the menu, the equivalent of a ‘Big Mac’ n fries (expensive) and I opt for the ‘pensioner’s special’ -only £2.99 for two eggs, bacon, tomatoes, roll and butter, served with tea or coffee.
‘C’mon, seriously. Where did you eat?’ ‘It was a place called home,’’ I explained. ‘My Mother cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn’t like what she put on my plate I was allowed to sit there until I did like it. By this time, the boy was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn’t tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table. Here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I’d thought his system could handle it : Some families never owned their own house, wore Levi’s, played golf, travelled outside the UK or had credit cards. Mine never drove me to school. I had a bike, with no gears and two speeds - dead slow and stop! We didn’t have television until I was 15.The picture was always fuzzy (black and white), it went off the air at midnight, after the national anthem; and came back on at about 6 a.m. There was usually locally produced news and a farming programme. Our only ‘phone shared a party line. Before you could dial you had to listen and make sure people you didn’t know weren’t already using it. All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers --my brother delivered a newspaper, six days a week and got up at 6AM every morning. Film stars kissed with their mouths shut. (At least, on the screen!) There were no ratings because all films were responsibly produced, showing no profanity or violence, so that everyone could enjoy viewing together. If you grew up in my generation well before the advent
‘The ‘Special’ sounds good,’ I say to the waitress ‘But I don’t want the eggs or the roll and butter thank you.’ ‘Then, I’ll have to charge you THREE pounds and ninety-nine pence because you’re ordering a la carte,’ the waitress warns me. ‘You mean I’d have to pay for not taking the eggs and bread?’ I ask incredulously. ‘That’s correct’ says she. of fast food, you may like to share these with some of the younger generation:REMEMBER....? Sweet cigarettes ; bicycle (trouser) clips; coal delivered in sacks; rag and bone men; milk delivered in glass bottles; whip and top; peashooters; 78 rpm records; Hifi’s; cork popguns; pink Ford Zephyr cars ; bread and butter pudding. If you remembered 0-3 = You’re still young If you remembered 3-5 = You are getting older If you remembered 6-9 = Don’t tell anyone your age, If you remembered 10-12 =You’re older than the hills. ‘For the first time in my life I achieve maximum score in a test I really needed to fail’ I tell my young friend. “As well as older than the hills you’re over the hill –– in fact you’re like --–oh man, seriously vintage” laughs Sam. “Ok, I’m convinced’ he adds ‘growing up just ain’t what it used to be’. “ I may be older than the hills but these memories encapsulate some of the most endearing times of my life. Thank you for allowing me to reminisce – indulging in
‘I’ll take the special then,’ I say. ‘How do you want your eggs?’ the waitress asks. ‘Raw and in the shell, alongside the roll and butter please’,I reply . Breakfast over - I took the eggs, roll, butter, and the 3 packets of ‘compulsory’ sugar (“comes automatically with the coffee Madam’) home with me. They provided most of the ingredients for a good old fashioned bread and butter pudding which I then baked for tea. Later that day I finally enter the 21st century – ‘Ancient and Modern’ are sitting in my parlour, (what Sam refers to as ‘the den’)...side by side on the sofa (or do I mean settee?) where I concede to consuming B ‘n’ B pud off a plastic lap tray whilst watching ‘Top Gear’ on plasma screen TV . Over the hill? --- Past my sell-by date? ---Cracking on a bit? Well maybe all of that, but nevertheless Sam, you just keep in mind this “special breakfast” day we shared, and remember to tell all your friends: DON’T MESS WITH SENIOR CITIZENS. WE’VE been around the block more than once! Kay Owen. April 2010.

Golf
Masters Week Mark McGeehan, PGA Golf Professional, Lopesan Meloneras Golf Masters week was incredible with so much good golf and viewing. It had everything that a major championship should have and it was fantastic to watch it all unfold. Day one was a day for the veterans, with firstly Bernhard Langer leading the way before the big news and headlines set by both Freddie Couples and once again Tom Watson. All eyes were on Tiger as he made his comeback and British attention focused on Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter. Sandy Lyle shot a very impressive 69 in the first round and then crumbled badly to miss the cut with a 86. Just goes to show you that this is the game of golf and nothing can ever be taken for granted.
The quality of golf played really was electric at the top of the leader board and with Phil Mickleson chasing hard all was set for an amazing last round. Watching it on Sunday evening was compelling and it was very difficult to see how it was all going to finish. Tiger starting badly with two bogeys in the first three and then as always he managed to find a little bit of pure genius as he holed out for two, an eagle at the 8th got him right back into contention. Freddie Couples in my opinion should have and could have won the masters if he had made those key important putts. The missed putts cost him dearly as
he mentally made mistakes and hitting it in rays creek at the 12th blew his chances of a dream tournament and one that would have been a popular win. Ian Poulter struggled to find the needed form of the previous three days and never got going, Tiger also went backwards as he also failed to deliver his best, although all considering his return to Professional Golf was a success as he was in contention and the only thing everybody was talking about was his golf! finally finishing tied fourth, not a bad result!
as a round of -1 was just not enough. He has come so close to his first major on several occasions I am sure he will be now thinking of the British Open at St Andrews and to win in front of his home crowd maybe the perfect story. As the golf world watches closely with Tigers’ return and our British players and Europeans playing well, also the Ryder Cup to look forward to, it is sure
to be a fantastic golfing season to what is a great start to 2010. On the 24th of April at 9.30 - 10.30 at the Lopesan Meloneras Golf Academy, we have the start of our Junior Golf Programme/Winners in the making. For more information please call Mark or Gavin on +34 928 145 309 to sign up.
Phil just kept playing very solid until the back 9 when the masters on Sunday really heats up. He started to spray his drives and all viewing witnessed the powers of recovery and on the par 5 13th, he played the shot of the tournament and one that will be remembered for many years to come. He was in the trees, ball lying on pine needles and although he had a full swing, he still had 221 yards to the green and had to carry the little creek that runs in front of the green. It is this part of the golf course that is famously known as amen corner and where many masters have been decided with contenders falling. He just took the shot on and hit it to 8ft although not being able to convert for an eagle 3 the birdie spurred him on to a very strong finish that was convincing enough to take the title and the green jacket for the third time. He devoted his emotional win to his wife who is battling hard against cancer. It was a shame that Lee Westwood could not find just a little bit more in the last day

Jenson Button Revels in ‘Best’ Formula 1 Victory “We just had to be a little bit careful as every time you arrived at a corner as it was a different condition to the previous lap, either better or worse, so it was pretty tricky.
McLaren’s Jenson Button described his Chinese Grand Prix victory as the “best” of his Formula 1 career. The defending world champion held off a late challenge in wet conditions from teammate Lewis Hamilton and took the world championship lead.
“But it was definitely the right call as we knew how quickly the soft [intermediate] tyres were going to destroy themselves.” Button also paid tribute to the work of McLaren’s engineers for providing a reliable and fast car in wet conditions.
“For me it is my best victory,” said Button. “Every time that you win I think it becomes your best victory.
“The pace was very good in those conditions. The team, towards the end of the race, said ‘you are two seconds quicker than most people except for Lewis who was doing the same time as you’,” he said.
“But this one was very special as it was very tough conditions and the great thing is our pace was good today.” The victory was Button’s second of the season - he also topped the podium at the Australian Grand Prix last month. It was the first one-two for British drivers in F1 since Ferrari driver Eddie Irvine beat McLaren’s David Coulthard in the 1999 Austrian Grand Prix.
We have proved that our car is good over the race distance and he capitalised as his tyres found sufficient grip and speed in the light drizzle before heading to the pits on the 19th lap to change to intermediates as the rain became heavier.
Button resisted the temptation to switch to intermediate tyres when rain began to fall at the start of the race while the majority of the field opted to change from slicks.
“Staying on the drys was the right thing,” said the former Brawn driver, who started the race from fifth. “You wouldn’t think it driving around as it was raining quite a bit, but we got a lot of grip from those tyres.
“We still don’t know where we are in the dry but we are going to forget about it at the moment as we are just going to enjoy this victory in the wet. “We have proved that our car is good over the race distance.” Sourced from BBC Sports.
ARDIELJIMENEZ: Pro Surfer Interview By Danny Alcock
ARDIEL JIMENEZ is one of the most representative figures of Bodyboarding in the world. And did you know that he is not just from Gran Canaria, but from Maspalomas?! Last year Ardiel achieved his dream of winning a world tour contest on his home turf here in Gran Canaria and by doing so, became number 2 in the world for Drop Knee; a position he is about to defend in Hawaii as the 2010 tour begins in earnest In recent years, Ardiel has been a permanent fixture at the top of the Canarian rankings, and Ardiel has also achieved runner up in the Spanish open championship, and has won the senior championship. Originally from the south of Gran Canaria and with over 20 years of experience in the water, Ardiel speaks exclusively to The Canary News about his best experiences. Database: Name: ARDIEL JIMENEZ PEREZ Height: 1.75 m Weight: 80 kg Date of Birth: 16th March 1977 Place of birth: GRAN CANARIA Local Spot: LAS MUJERES and TAURO.
A. Training, travelling between islands in search for good waves and I love a good movie! Q. What is your favourite wave in the Canaries? A. El Agujero Q. What is your favourite wave in the world? A. El Agujero
Favourite Spot: EL AGUJERO Favourite Move: AIR REVERSE Dream Surfari : WORLDTICKET with 4 Destinations: MEXICO, TAHITI, INDO(SUMATRA) AND MENTAWAII. And some PACIFIC islands. Sponsors: MASPALOMAS COSTA CANARIA, DEPORTECANARIO. COM, PRIDE, O & E, INSTITUTO INSULAR DE DEPORTES, SHARK ENERGY DRINKS, FISIODEP.COM AND KPALOA. Q.What are your training methods between championships and the offseason? A. I attempt to surf every day, whatever the conditions are because it isn’t the case that there are big, perfect waves in every contest. If you want to be the best
of the elite, there is no other way than to practice in ALL conditions, good or bad. The rest of my training includes running and surf stretching mixed with relaxation stretching. Q. Do you have a ritual before going in for a heat? A. I stretch as much as possible whilst listening to music that motivates me, especially lively music! Q. On average, how much time do you spend travelling over the course of the year? A. I think about 6 months or maybe more if I put everything together. Q. What you do when you’re not competing?
Q. In your opinion, what are the most pressing issues in the world of surfing in Gran Canaria in the coming years? A. ECONOMIC AID for the athletes, including more from the SPONSORS. Q. You have been doing this for over 20 years now and you are still at the top of your sport. What is your motivation and your key to long term success? A. I think that every day you should look for your motivations and give yourself objectives to achieve. Whether it is to be better in a certain type of wave, or to perform the best manoeuvre of the day, get the best photo etc. Another motivation for training is with the objective of getting into the best physical form possible for a particular trip. A very big motivation for me was to achieve ones’ dreams. You have to work hard to get them, not just in the water but out of the water. You must remember to be professional in every moment. For me, my greatest motivation has been to be able to live my sport and I have managed to do this.

Q. What advice would you give kids who want to go far in the world of surfing? A. First of all, always go surfing to have fun. This is the primary reason why we do this sport. Always respect your elders in the water. If in the end you like to compete, it is important to set reasonable objectives and fight to achieve them. Remember that in every contest, win or lose, you are achieving experience. When you win, celebrate quietly the same day, because the next day you

should be equally as focussed for the next contest. When you lose, don’t get de-moralized. Study what errors you committed and the next day start to work on these errors. Q. Do you have some funny stories from your career as a professional? A. Ha ha ha too MANY! If I started telling, it would never end! Q. How many Bodyboards do you use a year? A. I like to try different boogies, and try
to use different sizes according to the conditions to see the difference. In one year I would use between 8 and 12. Q. Anything else that you would like to say to the readers of The Canary News? A. Just to thank all my sponsors: Maspalomas Costa Canaria, DEPORTECANARIO.COM, PRIDE ISLAND SPORTS INSTITUTE, O & E, SHARK ENERGY DRINKS, KPALOA FISIODEP.COM And to my new sponsors TURISMO DE CANARIAS. Thanks for all the support received over the years. It is thanks to them I have been able to achieve these goals and have finished a consecutive year as runner up in Drop knee.
Thank you very much for your time, Ardiel and the best of luck in Hawaii and for the whole season. Thank you very much! Last year in Hawaii, Ardiel achieved a 9th in the world, competing against 140 others in huge waves. This year, his results were not as good but Ardiel enjoyed some incredible waves as we can see from the photos. The Canary News will keep you posted on Ardiels’ progress through the season. Ardiel is currently travelling Tenerife on a photo-shoot with surf photographer Brian Gonzalez. More to come on this one.
