WHERE TO STAY
• Because Lonely Planet has called our city “Europe’s best kept secret” and a must see destination. • Because National Geographic Traveler Magazine has listed this city as the most authentic historic city in the world ánd full of life. • Because you must witness with your own eyes what Napoleon and the mysterious thief of ‘The Just Judges’ panel already knew: ‘The Mystic Lamb’ really is key to European art history. • Because the city comes to life again after sunset. • And of course because you like to get off the beaten track.

When Vadim Repin won the Queen Elisabeth Competition at the age of 17, it was written in the stars: this young man would be looking at a golden career in the future! Many agree on the possibility that Repin could be the most ‘complete’ violinist of this time… For Ghent he chooses Jean Sibelius’ enchanting Violin Concerto. Repin shares the stage with the lively Beethoven Bonn Orchestra. They demonstrate their qualities with a performance of Gustav Mahler’s masterly First Symphony, which tells you a story filled with birdsong and awakening nature, folklore dances and marching music. A landmark in musical history!

Gent Festival is honoured to welcome the Vienna Boys Choir with their golden angelic voices in Saint Bavo’s Cathedral! The choir has been in existence now for more than 500 years and was originally connected to the royal court in Austria. Legendary composers like Mozart, Haydn, Schubert and Bruckner have worked with them. Their musical programme in Ghent will be based on Joseph Haydn. Influences of gypsy music of Austrian and Croatian folk music are never far-off in Haydn’s music. Composers in the centuries that followed drew inspiration from his oeuvre. Enjoy an impressive journey in the footsteps of Haydn!

For the first time at Gent Festival: the Athens State Orchestra! The orchestra takes up a leading role as ambassador for the works of Greek composers. As such, the Athens State Orchestra is a musical partner to composer and living legend Mikis Theodorakis. The orchestra will perform his snappy suite Zorba the Greek along with Greek Dances by Nikolaos Skalkottas. The popular music from the birthplace of our Western civilization is set to clash with what can only be described as a counterpart from America: George Gershwin. Pianist Evgeni Bozhanov, laureat of the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition, enters into a dialogue with the orchestra in the wellknown Rhapsody in Blue. A search for roots and tradition, it is a concert that will continue to resonate for a long time!

ATHENS STATE ORCHESTRA – GREEK ROOTS WED 28.09
Gent Festival moves to a location which appeals to the imagination: the Floralies Hall. This is where the orchestral power and beauty of Dvořák’s 9th Symphony will be heard. Dvořák wrote his masterpiece in the United States. He immersed himself completely in the American culture and got to know the music of the AfricanAmericans and Native Americans, but in the meantime he draws on the folk music of his beloved homeland the Czech Republic. Anima Eterna Bruges and Jos Van Immerseel bring Dvořák’s music score to life. After their recent successful debut in Sydney and in New York, we are curious about how they will take over the Floralies Hall with a canvas of sound bursting with colour and energy!

Paul Simon’s album Graceland has earned iets place amongst the most awesome records. Graceland is an album brimming with African grooves and upbeat rhythms in an eclectic mix of Western and non-Western musical styles. We asked Sioen, our artist in residence for two years, to get to work on this remarkable record. Exclusively for Gent Festival of Flanders, he decided to follow the example set by Paul Simon and work with South African singers. We are looking forward to seeing what legendary hits like Homeless, The Boy in the Bubble and Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes will sound like!
We have already lost count of the number of prices that were won by the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra for their numerous CD recordings: a couple of Edison Music Awards, the Gramophone Award, a Diapason d’Or, … The great inspirer of the worldrenowned orchestra is Ton Koopman, a prominent personality within the old-music movement. Koopman developed an impressive CD-oeuvre as a harpsichordist and organist, especially with music of Buxtehude and Bach. He is also bringing Bach to the Cathedral of Ghent: the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and the widely praised Ton Koopman will surely generate sparks with an exquisite combination of Brandenburg Concertos and Orchestral Suites.
“OdeGand is a concept that is the envy of many festivals both in Belgium and abroad. It is therefore often copied but the original continues to prevail.”
