When God Jukes You, Just To See Where You Are. Written by Justin Gaynor

Faith is an interesting thing. It is defined as “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen.” It’s like when my dad and mom used to tell me and my mates, “If you guys play hard today and win the game, we’re taking everyone for ice cream cones afterward.” We trusted that if we got out there on the field, gave it our best, and out played the other team, we were going to be treated to ice cream. The first game we won, guess what happened...we went for ice cream. After that, it was pretty much a non-issue for us to trust that if we won, we were going for ice cream. My parents had established trust and then built a strong record for themselves in being faithful to fulfill their promises to us. 10

Now, one day, after a tough, grueling game...a game that we won...we were all loaded up in the bus. As we were heading to the ice cream store, I looked out the window to see that my dad had not turned on the road to the ice cream shop. Looking around, I saw my buddies eyes glaring at me. “What’s going on man?” “Yeah, we won…?” “This sucks…” Nobody dared say anything to my dad or mom as he was driving. We arrived at our house where all the parents normally picked all the other kids up. A deep sense of sad, anxious wonder was upon us, then as we opened the door and walked into the house, all the parents were there and yelled “SURPRISE!!!” There were balloons and streamers, pizza, and someone turned on the music, my uncle was cooking stuff on the grill, and there were all kinds of new, colorful floats in the pool, and yes, there was ice cream...lots of ice cream! My dad looked at me with my eyes wide and just shrugged his shoulders, smiled with a sly grin, and said, “What? You guys have been doing such a great job, we just wanted to do something extra special for the team this week.” As parents, we are called to love our children. We are also called to help them develop character and to train them in the three primary human virtues: faith, hope, and love. To bring them up in the training of the LORD. In doing so, we want to be careful not to frustrate them and push them to the point of losing heart. We want them to be the types of people who are wise, but more importantly, to be a people that understand love and faithfulness. The truth is that a faith that hasn’t been tested, can’t be trusted. For more on this, read and consider the testing of Abraham found in the book of Genesis.

Mixed Messages Written by Justin Gaynor

Mixed messages and poor communication can significantly damage relationships. In relationships, we want to do all that we can to communicate with the other person in ways that demonstrate an appropriate level of familiarity. This expresses to the person that we have paid attention to their character, their kind of humor, their likes and dislikes. We speak with nuances that connect with their soul...for instance, if we know they are really into movies with a certain actor or actress, we may allude to certain scenes or quotes from those movies. This develops a sense of common ground and basically says, “I know you, and I really do like you.” However, we want all of our communications to be somewhat wholesome, useful, and to in some way build the other person up. Gentlemen, this is something that takes practice. We will say and do a lot of stupid things in our lifetime. God always forgives us when we turn to Him, but other people are not as resilient as God. 18

Sometimes we say things that can really hurt people. When we make someone that really cares about us feel a certain way, they may not want to feel that way ever again. When that happens, we have to understand that a person is never obligated to forgive us, they have a choice. Sure that choice has consequences, for them and for us, as well as others, but it is their choice. Knowing that, it is best to use our words wisely and lovingly, and dare I say, sparingly in some cases. Now, I grew up in the South amongst construction workers and restaurant workers. We are a ‘salty’ people as they say. However, as I have been growing as a Christian, I’ve noticed, particularly among women that have also become Christian, a very swift change in the kinds of jokes, banter, and humor that they find funny, or even acceptable. It can be quite jolting and cause you to feel a little bewildered, and it is strangely convicting. Suddenly, they are taking their calling as being part of a royal priesthood, a holy nation...more seriously...apparently...than we are. So, then the question becomes, “Are we going to take seriously the word that tells us to let no unwholesome talk come out of our mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen?” Or is that too difficult a word for us to receive by faith at this time?

Beachwear For Spring & Summer 2021 by Justin Gaynor In getting geared up for the beach season, we want to exercise and get our beach bods in shape...maybe not as much as we want tacos and beer, but… Well, anyway, here we are in Florida and the beaches are starting to get filled up with Spring Breakers. Some nice, fresh threads would be good to have, so... I took a drive to one of my favorite surf shops in South Florida. Nomad Surf Shop is located at 4655 N. Ocean Blvd., Boynton Beach, FL and is a local landmark. I decided to cruise in and sort of secret shop the place. Nomad has taken the COVID-19 precautions very seriously from the beginning. There are signs posted that masks are required while shopping and there is hand sanitizer provided at the entrance so that you make minimal bio-impact as you browse. When you first walk in the ladies section is to your right and they always seem to have bright, cheerful gals there to greet you. Making your way up the ramp, you’ll see some historical artifacts on your left remembering the late founder, Ron Heavyside, and some beautifully crafted custom surfboards on your right. But we haven’t even got to the good stuff yet…cont’d...

The back of the store is a beach going gentleman’s paradise. Everything you need from a wide brim straw hat to flip flops and everything in between. Nomad is a much more low key, local surf shop. As a result, they seem to stay away from ‘flash in the pan

trends’ and what end up being quickly passing fads. That is part of the reason they fair so well with locals and visitors alike, the authenticity of their products. Surf gear for surf culture, from surfers and shapers. No beach visitor wants to get suckered into buying gear that makes them stand out as a kook, so they don’t seem to even put the stuff on the shelf. This season, the classic board shorts have got some great patterns and very neutral colors and tones, as well as calming pastels. Screen printed t-shirts with your favorite brands are a staple, but there are some really great button up shirts that aren’t as loud as traditional hawaiian shirts, though as we talked about last month, those are available and trending well this season. All in all, it’s looking like a great beach season...now back to getting my dad-bod in better shape...

The Cost of Go, Go, Go... Written by Justin Gaynor

Since the elections were concluded, fuel prices have risen sharply in the United States. A gallon of regular unleaded gasoline at the time this article is being written is at $2.91. This is easily double what it was in the not too distant past. In our August 2020 edition we looked at oil and oil ETFs getting slammed into negative territory due to the glut from the COVID-19 pandemic essentially shutting down most international and domestic travel. As we are entering into the summer driving season, prices just recently backed off from a huge surge that was taking place, at least here in Florida. I’m not usually much of a conspiracy theorist. However, the systematic shutting down of travel, and other fossil fuel dependent industries driving prices into negative territory created an amazing buying opportunity for “old money” that is more “in the know’ than most of us. The fact that it almost immediately ran right back up after the change in leadership in the US is very interesting. From a biblical perspective, in our hurried modern lives we often do not let ourselves or the land rest. We recently emerged from a Jewish Jubilee / Sabbath year, and perhaps COVID-19 was a modern way of Jesus saying, “Slow down... let the land rest and call my Sabbath’s a delight.”

Shrimp & Grits Written by Justin Gaynor

Dining out is something that I personally love to do. Whether it’s a weekend brunch with bottomless Mimosas or an elegant french meal with escargot and dirty Martinis. However, there is nothing like a good Southern cooked breakfast at home. Sleep in, prepare a quick, hearty breakfast, and then slide back into bed with your meal, a hot cup of coffee, and some music and simply wake up slow. This recipe for Shrimp & Grits is easy to make and tastes awesome...

1lb. Fresh Raw Shrimp 1lb. Andouille Sausage 2 Bell Peppers 1 Yellow Onion 1 Teaspoon Cayenne Pepper 2 Teaspoons Old Bay Seasoning Salt & Pepper to taste 1/2 cup of water Quaker Grits (however much you need) Heavy Whipping Cream Butter 1/2 lb. Cheddar Cheese Get the grits going. Steam the shrimp. Cut up your bell peppers, onions, and sausage. Remove your shrimp from the heat and rinse. Get the sausage, onion, bell peppers, and spices cooking while you peel the shrimp, add cold water and simmer down. Salt & Pepper to taste. Your grits should be tender, so add heavy whipping cream (just enough to give it a rich, smooth texture...not ‘soupy’ though...and add the cheddar cheese...stiring regularly so it doesn’t get stuck to the bottom. Salt & Pepper to taste. Serve in a clean dish...grits in first, then a pile of the good stuff on top.

To Your Library For April 2021 The Complete Beer Course Boot Camp For Beer Geeks:

From Novice to Expert in Twelve Tasting Classes

A Book by Joshua M. Bernstein How did I become a beer expert? Glad you asked... When I was on hiatus, I got a job as a prep cook at a place in NC that specialized in local North Carolina microbrews. As I observed the beer culture, I thought, “I need to know more about this craft.” So I moseyed on over to the public library and picked up “The Complete Beer Course: Boot Camp For Beer Geeks” written by Joshua M. Bernstein. I quickly realized that this was an experiential learning path and that head knowledge wasn’t going to cut it. So I made a connection at a local beer and wine store where Jason and Liz, the proprietors, ordered beers from all over the world for me to taste. I worked through the book and developed my palate and now quality, craft beer is something that I have become much more appreciative of and grateful for. 43

A Year of Living Prayerfully A Book Written by Jared Brock

This book was a fun read. If you have been experiencing boredom in your prayer life, my first recommendation is to make your calling and election sure. My second recommendation is to just pray...choose to communicate with God regularly...the breakthrough will come and times of refreshing will ingnite your spiritual senses to a “First Love” relationship with God. This book though...well, Jared is a great storyteller and a wonderful writer. The ancient concept of prayer journeys and pilgrimages to holy places comes rushing into the present with modern humor, wit, and wonder. God has created an amazing world for us to inhabit, and while the best is yet to come, there is much to appreciate and celebrate as we live prayerfully with God.

On A Steel Horse I Ride - Bike Week 2021 Written by Justin Gaynor

When I was growing up, Bike Week in the nearby town of Daytona Beach was always something I looked forward to. Mostly because my Aunt Paula and Aunt Cindy would show up for the festivities with our cousins and everyone was ready for fun. My mom owned a local family diner, so we were close enough to the action to see a significant increase in business. Bike Week is an absolute spectacle for the senses... everything from loud rumbling motorcycles, to scantily clad women wrestling in kiddy pools filled with coleslaw, to carnival foods from all sorts of food trucks, and so much more. This year was no different, though I didn’t get to spend it with my mom and aunts, which made it far less enjoyable than I remember. I still had fun though, which is what they would have wanted. My younger brother recently bought a stretch of land in New Smyrna Beach and it’s within walking distance to Sopotnick’s Cabbage Patch, a bar and campground that has become a destination for bikers around the world. It is truly an experience like none other. So I got my gear together and headed on over to see what was going on. When I first arrived, I made a right into the campground and food truck area across the street from the main pub. Looking at the variety of custom bikes is always a joy to me. My dad, stepdad, father-in-law, brother-in-law, and mom all rode motorcycles but some of the bikes you see at bike week are next level. 64

Of course, the food was amazing, too. My college roommate owns a cheesesteak place in PA that is, to date, the best cheesesteak I’ve ever had. Though Jersey Mike’s is pretty good. So, I always like to try the cheesesteaks and let him know what’s going in the industry. These cheesesteaks are said to be made for bikers, by bikers. It came to me with a fork in it, and I pretty much had to eat it with the fork, it was a little more ‘wet’ than your average cheesesteak. Then you have your adult beverages. Bike Week, like Spring Break, is known for it’s hard partying crowd. Fortunately, when you get to the age of being able to afford a $25k + Harley Davidson, you’ve matured quite a lot since your Spring Break years. So, Bike Week seems to me a little more laid back. The drinks are always overpriced, but that is always to be expected at large events. I was pleased to see some Christian Biker’s there sharing the Gospel and praying that all the folks had a fun and safe time. It was good to stop in and thank them for their service to the King and the Kingdom. Most of the guys were older with long white beards, sort of a mix between St. Augustine and ZZ Top. If there are any of you young guys out there with a heart for bikers and a passion for American steel and the open road... you should connect with a Christian ministry like theirs, they could use some young guns.
