A Valentine’s Day To Remember Written by Justin Gaynor It’s a busy time of year and the weight of the world is on my shoulders right now. “Mom! Sean won’t stop!” “Sean! Leave your sister alone. Come on we have to get you two to school.” Moments of reflective contemplation are all too often interupted. The important giving way to the urgent, and then slipping off somewhere into an ethereal land of “I’ll get back to those thoughts.” This is the rhythm of my life right now. Their dad isn’t here to help anymore. Not that I can completely blame him, though I want to. Bastard wasn’t ever much help anyway. These things just happen, right? I don’t know, I don’t have time for this right now. As we pulled up to St. Thomas Elementary, I can’t help but to run through the checklist in my mind a tenth time. Backpacks, check, lunches, check, Sean’s got clean clothes for gym class, I put them in his bag, check, oh, shit! I need to stop and get gas. I’m going to be late. “Alright guys, listen to your teachers! And make sure you get any missed assignments from last Friday.” I had let them play hookie from school last Friday and we took a three day weekend to the shore. It was a much needed breather, but now I have so much to catch up on.
10
It’s 9:03 am. God! That door is heavy. I almost dropped the armful of things as I entered the office. Three minutes late. That’s not bad considering. My desk is a disaster, I’m going to need to spend a few minutes getting this stuff organized otherwise I’m going to be lost all day. “Hey girl!” “Damn, Janet, you scared the shit out of me.” “Them kids at it again? Girl you need to decompress. I’m going to this new place downtown after work, and you’re coming with me.” “Yeah right. I just got back and my head is already spinning.” “Doesn’t matter, you have got to take care of you girl! You can’t give nothing to those kids or anybody else that you don’t have. You need some ‘momma time’! “Yeah, we’ll see.” She’s right. I just had the same conversation with my counseler last time we met. Let’s see how the rest of the day goes. I guess I can have dad pick the kids up... It’s 4:48 pm. Ok, that was better than I thought. I am almost completely caught up from what I missed last week. I still haven’t heard back from the Johnston account. I’ll need to follow up...

...on that tomorrow. Let me just wrap up the rest of these emails... “So are you coming tonight or are just going make me keep hounding you till you break?” “As a matter of fact, my dad picked the kids up and they’re cool for the evening. Apparently, they didn’t miss any tests and they have enough homework to keep them occupied for a while. So, yes, I’m all yours...” “Oh, baby girl, we’re about have some FUN!” It’s 8:37 pm. “So it is a nice night tonight.” “What do think about the food? Mine was pretty good.” “Yeah, it wasn’t bad, I’m ready for another round though, you?” “Hell yeah, girl!” I walked up the bar and it was a little busy, so I was waiting to get the barman’s attention. There was a guy next to me, pretty cute, I guess. One of those panama hats. One of these Palm Beach guys I guess. “Oh, hi...” Ok, he’s talking to me, be nice, don’t say anything stupid,
14
Alright, I definitely think he’s cute, no wedding ring, cool, maybe he’ll buy us a couple drinks... “Hi” “My name’s Jack. At least that’s what my friends call me. Here’s my card though.” “Jennifer, nice to meet you.” We talked for a few minutes. He seems really nice. This must not be his first time here, he seems to know everyone... “Well, here’s my drinks, nice talking with you...you can come and hang out with us over here if you want.” Did I just say that? “Oh, thank you, that’s very nice of you.” Ok, walking away...he’s not coming...oh,well...kinda cute... “Alright girl, thank you, here’s to ‘Momma’s Night Out!’ And don’t think I didn’t see you talkin’ to Mr. Mysterious over there.” “He’s pretty nice. He gave me his card? Do guys do that, so weird.” “Well, maybe he wants it back, because he’s walking over here right now...” The adventure always starts somewhere, somehow....

BUZZ WORD: RELATIONSHIP Written by Justin Gaynor Relationship has been a buzz word for a long time, and it’s not going away. Ever since the concept was embraced by a large group of people, the Israelites, in their daily prayer called the Shema. “Hear, O Israel, the LORD is God, the LORD is One.” This worldview that tells us that everything that exists, exists within this divine entity and that all things are interdependant. This ought to cause us to care for ourselves, our families, our communities, and all of creation in very deep and meaningful ways. But often times it doesn’t... First of all, there are competing worldviews. Not everyone embraces the Judeo-Christian outlook, a monotheistic understanding. Worldviews that embrace more than one central guiding image and place them on equal, or even hierarchical footings are setting the stage for division and dis-unity. However, when embracing the value of relationship, having one point of origin and one ultimate destination creates common vision and common mission. Then what happens as we move from where we are to where we intend to be, the things that divide us begin to be re-imagined, and with wisdom, the narrative begins to change in those areas and we grow closer to reflecting the God that we are focused on. The God who is One. The truth is we become like what we behold. Relationships are difficult. That is an understatement. If you are looking for easy, a checklist of do’s and don’ts is a whole lot easier. Unfortunately, performing a list of moral chores doesn’t actually help us genuinely love at all, and this Judeo-Christian God is not only One, He is love, as an ancient Jewish student of Torah tells us. If you want to truly love and be loved, you will go through some very difficult things. The reason why, is that your heart is callous and hard, but that can be corrected. The required operation is not easy though.

THE SPORT COAT Written by Justin Gaynor
The winter months always open up a whole new spectrum for style. From snow jackets to sportcoats, we have an opportunity to layer our clothes in a way that feels truly comfortable and reveals our sense of style. Last month we talked about the versatility of the scarf in a gentleman’s wardrobe, among other things. This month I want to focus on the sport coat. Every gentleman ought to have at least one in his closet. Sport coats add an element of calm, wise sophistication to your attire. They are great for layering, I often wear a black weatherproof trench overtop of a nice sport coat when the weather gets below 50...button up shirt, and nicely coordinated tie and scarf...and usually a well-crafted fedora. The sport coat can come in a number of cuts, from a modern thin cut to a more traditional cut. All the standard rules for fitting apply, and of course having a good tailor is always a benefit. Especially after that last holiday season coupled with the COVID-19 (19 extra pounds that is...) Pick yourself up a couple nice sport coats in varying colors and cuts, that way you will be prepared for every occasion. They are great for less formal dates and day to day business where a full suit and tie would be too much. 24

Preparing Your Kiddos for Successful Investing Written by Justin Gaynor 30
31
Learning good stewardship can start earlier in life than a lot of parents think. When we are open with our kids about how we manage our finances it not only helps them, it also helps us. Being a good parent is not an easy thing, and there are many areas that we avoid because we don’t feel comfortable with them ourselves. However, we still have a responsability to raise our children up in the way they should choose to live. When we invest in our children this way, outsourcing these learning initiatives as little as possible, it also strengthens our relationship with them. Of course, being kind and patient, understanding how they learn best and consistently checking to see if they have undrestood the instruction is going to increase the probability of good fruit. With regard to finances, one of the first things we want to instill in our children is a sense of charity and practical love. They need to learn the value of a dollar and to appreciate their ability to make wealth, but they also need to learn that as exciting as it is, money is not to become an idol in their lives. In Jewish homes, children begin learning the lessons of charity very early in life. Jewish families gather together each week beginning when three stars can be seen in the night sky on Friday evenings, through Saturday evening. Within their homes, they have what is called a Tzedakah Box. Monies are put in the box at the end of each week, and at some point, the family will decide how they want to use the accumulated funds in the Tzedakah Box to ‘do justice in the world.’ In doing this, they teach their children that the world we live in is broken, and there are broken people in it, and as the people 32
of God, we have a calling. We are a royal priesthood, a holy nation. Part of our royal vocation is to make sure that we do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. Justice is about setting things right in a broken world. This includes caring for widows and orphans, among other things. This is the purpose of the Tzedakah Box. Learn to be generous in a cruel and unjust world. At some point, the child will be able to do chores. They should learn that when a person contributes positively to the household, there is reward in it. So, starting an allowance as early as possible is a good thing, and if the proper attitude and excitement surround the first lesson, the Tzedakah Box, and you exemplify what it looks like to be a cheerful giver, your child will see their first contribution to the Tzedakah Box with their own earned money with a what the Jewish people call a ‘single eye’ or a ‘good eye’. A person that has learned to be generous in a cruel and unjust world. Start with these lessons. When your children learn the value of investing in other humans for God’s glory, and heavenly wealth, they will also learn to seek first God’s Kingdom and His faithfulness to them. They will learn that other investments for material gain will be blessed when they make God’s priorities their first and primary priorities. Researching companies to invest in will be like second nature, because they are so used to discussing various charities with the family where they feel they will be able to make the biggest impact and, in turn, get the largest return on investment.

Rustico Italiano Written by Justin Gaynor
In Downtown Lake Worth Beach there are a lot of great restaurants. Not only on the main street, Lake Avenue, but also peppered throughout the surrounding area. On one of my walks I happened to pass Rustico Italiano. A small Italian eatery that reminded me a lot of an Italian restaurant that I worked at as a server years ago. So, I figured I would give it a try. The classic Italian style of the restaurant and the curb appeal was quite lovely. It felt very authentic, like a place that I would enjoy in Florence or Rome. When I entered the restaurant, there were only a few patrons there. I was asked if I had a reservation. I did not. The server promptly seated me. The interior of the restaurant was very cozy. It is a rather small place, but very comfortable and classy. Everything appeared to be clean, the service team were all wearing masks and were dressed in the traditional black slacks, black shirts, and black shoes. The service was very good and the food was as well. I started with a fresh garden salad and for my entree the Lobster Ravioli special at $35 was tender and delicious. The house Pinot Noir was a perfect partner. When another server stopped by my table with the dessert tray, I couldn’t resist my sweet tooth. There was a lovely confection that really finished the meal off nicely. All in all, it was a great meal at a wonderful restaurant that would be great for any occasion. 38

Anyone that has been reading Gentleman’s Purpose eMagazine or watching our livestreams knows that our CEO and Founder, Justin Gaynor, is a fan of Don Miller. I think that he has read pretty much everything the guy has written. Miller and N.T. Wright, former Bishop of Durham, are his two favorite authors. This book is unique though. Don Miller and his team have put together a 60 day journey that couples daily videos with daily entries to be read from the book. All these insights on business are derived from Miller’s real world experience of launching and growing businesses. Miller speaks and writes with unmatched clarity and humility in Business Made Simple. This is a great book for anyone that engages in any kind of commerce. Certainly for the entrepreneuriallyminded. I grew up mostly around protestants. In this environment, I rarely heard much positive reference to the Catholic Church and its people. Just a bunch of people that have big ol’ family Bibles that sit on their coffee tables for show, but never get acually read. It seems they just take whatever the guy speaking at their gathering says as Gospel truth and just head home. They never really take the time to see if what the preacher said was actually true or not as compared with the Bible...or so I’ve been told. So, when I started reading the writings of an Anglican Bishop, N.T. Wright, I thought, well let me check this Catholic thing out a little more. Why? Well, Tom Wright seemed to be actually engaging in good conversation and trying to work through some of these differences that divide Catholics and Protestants. I found that approach to be much more Christ-like than simply demonizing one another. At St. Mary the Virgin’s Anglican Church in Delray Beach, FL Bishop Bill agreed to meet with me and talk about some of these things. Bishop Bill explained that while they are an Anglican Church, they claim Apostolic Succession, or direct spiritual decendency from the Apostle Peter through the laying on of hands and transmission of the Holy Spirit. So they consider themselves to have everything that is required to be considered Catholic proper. Bishop Bill gave me a book of Common Prayer, which is what the Anglican / Catholic Church uses in it’s daily worship and prayer. Based on what I had heard about these people, I half expected there to be witches incantations and that I might have to pick up some puppy dog tails on my way home. Much to my glad surprise, there were daily assignments to read Scripture. A Psalm, Proverb, Old Testament, and New Testament for morning and evening devotions. In addition, there were written prayers, sort of like the ones I grew up praying from “The Valley of Vision: A Collection of Puritan Prayers” after I got saved. All in all, I have been really enjoying the Book of Common Prayer and would recommend a copy to every student of the Bible and the True Apostolic Faith contained therein.
