Responding to Their Mustard Seed Written by Justin Gaynor

In faith related matters, love calls our faith to respond to the faith in others, even in its slightest form. As Jesus labors to impress upon us, faith is sort of like an atom, though smaller than a mustard seed, it contains tremendous power. Last month we talked about some things we can do this year to grow in our spiritual lives. One of the topics of discussion was water baptism. This strange, very easy, thing we do in true faith to take hold of a spiritual surgery that God offers us for the purpose of being able to see spiritual things and enter into the Kingdom, or rule of God. It’s the “very easy” action that I want to talk about here. After writing last month’s edition of Gentleman’s Purpose, the Holy Spirit moved me to offer an opportunity to the people of Port Orange and the surrounding area to respond in faith to the Gospel and to be baptized into Christ. So, I talked with an elder minister at St. Luke’s Anglican Church, where I am presently serving. He checked his calendar and saw that he was free on the day and at the time that I had hoped to offer the service. We agreed to meet at the seashore on a Saturday morning. I went to the Christian bookstore and ordered a box of Bibles to give to folks to help with their instruction after baptism, distributed some preliminary instruction, made a sign letting passersby know what holy mischief we were up to, and other preparations for the outreach.

10

I arrived at the beach about an hour early and got everything set up. Lots of very nice folks waved, and some Brothers and Sisters in Christ stopped to talk and encourage me. Then a man came up and wanted to know about Baptism. I shared the Gospel with him, and he indicated that he understood and responded with a request for baptism. Then I invited him to follow me into the water. He immediately said, “Oh no, I’m not going in there!” Now, coming from a Baptist background, my immediate desire was to jump into an apologetic session as to why it must be done this way and why, if he really believed what he just agreed to, that Jesus is Lord, then complete and immediate obedience is the only logical and right response. However, that is not how I responded. Get the fish in the boat, lest it throw the hook, it can always be thrown back later if it is found that the whole thing was rubbish and there was no real response of faith. So, I switched gears. “Well,” I said, “it is cold. I could baptize you how the Lutherans do it.” “How is that?” he asked. I went on to explain that if being baptized via full immersion (that is what the word “Baptize” means) was not possible, then I could pray with him concerning his salvation and then ask him to look up as I pour water upon his head three times. Once in the name of the Father. Once in the name of the Son. Once in the name of the Holy Spirit. He was immediately agreeable to this. So, he renounced all sin, expressed his need for forgiveness, and opened his heart to receive Jesus as His Lord and Savior. Then I baptized him as I had been taught from the Didache (The Teaching of the Twelve) which is the oldest “Christianity 101” document that the Church has regarding specifics on the practical matters of the Church’s common life, such as baptism. Just about the time I finished up with him, my friend from the Church, the elder Dean Stuart arrived. We continued to meet and pray with people for the remainder of our appointed time there. No more people came for baptism that day though. Then he and I went for a wonderful lunch at a local Portuguese restaurant. It was a lovely day, and a very interesting opportunity to live our faith and serve the city where God has planted us. How about you? Have you been taking initiative to grow in and express your faith more this year?

Digital Dating Dances with St. Valentine Written by Justin Gaynor

Valentine’s Day is going to be celebrated this month and I am sure all of the online dating portals are already ramping up in activity. I recently had an opportunity to watch a film called, “LoveHard”. It was a film about the dangers and opportunities of finding your true love via dating sites. The movie was a thoroughly interesting romantic comedy with some solid life lessons. One thing it helped me realize though, was that the dating scene in 2022 and Cupid’s war strategy is light-years from what it was a decade ago. So, for all of my single gentlemen looking for love right now, the time to do some evaluation of the situation and of yourself is upon us. I say “us”, because I am right here with you on this one. 18

The first thing to consider is what type of message we are sending into the dating sphere. At a certain point, in the film I mentioned, the hero had gone over to “the Dark Side”. After a significant period of time utilizing a somewhat honest approach to online dating that yielded no real responses, he began “catfishing”. A relatively new term to me. Basically, in order to get into conversation and begin an online relationship, he created a profile using someone else’s photos and life story as the launching point. Then, because he was, in fact, a really great guy, he won the girl’s heart with quick responses to texts, humor, wit, attentiveness, and, well, just being himself. Unfortunately, it was all coming from behind the mask of this false online persona. Now, I don’t want to spoil the movie for you, but there was a moment of truth where the guy was asked to evaluate his original profile. When inviting a second set of eyes to offer some feedback, it turned out that his “honest profile” wasn’t so honest either. They were photos of himself, but he was posing in ways where he was trying too hard to send a specific message that just came across weird, and a little creepy to be honest. Towards the end of the film, he creates a profile that shares the truth of who he is, of what he is passionate about vocationally, and it is this level of honest, humble expression of himself that ultimately wins the day. So, as you are engaging in the digital dating world, first, understand that there are some ridiculous things happening out there and you need to guard your heart. Secondly, in order for you to connect with someone that will lead to a healthy, lasting relationship…possibly even marriage…being honest with yourself and then everyone else via these platforms is still the best way forward.

Wearing Your Heart on Your Sleeve Written by Justin Gaynor

The truth is that we are only going to impress the right woman when we are genuine and honest, from the heart. Yet, at the same time, we know it is wise to guard our hearts. So, as we consider our wardrobe during this season of romance and love, how can we be genuine, attract what we are attracted to, and still protect our hearts from falsehood and disappointment? Well, here are three things to consider: Does your wardrobe rightly express the best version of yourself? Is there substance behind the clothing? What does sustainable life with you actually look like? Does your wardrobe rightly express the best version of yourself? It has always been interesting to me to listen to the arguments from primarily African-American congregations regarding why wearing your “Sunday best” to worship God is important, versus the arguments of the “free-church” who show up on Sundays in jeans, t-shirts and sandals. Each side makes very valid points from Scripture’s representation of the character and nature of God. Each community attempts to maintain the unity that the Spirit gives in the bond of peace, just as long as they don’t see each others worship services on YouTube. When that happens, the next sermon from the pulpit will likely be some sort of apologetic polemic as to why their particular approach is better, more fruitful, or more Biblical.

Is there Substance Behind the Clothing? As for you, when looking to attract a suitable partner to do life with, it’s a little different. God’s love is unconditional, whereas the love of people may be growing towards that ideal, but women like what they like, and men like what they like. When we have our “druthers”, as in “I ‘druther take that well-built curvy brunette in the black dress with the green eyes to dinner than the heavy-set girl in the Walmart sweats.”, we will always go with what pleases us. However, when I was in North Carolina, I got into ministry with a group of Lutherans that were very focused on intentionally choosing those that appeared to never get “chosen”. They loved the kids on the streets that were from broken homes, that were unique, and very much imperfect. The ones that never had an opportunity to be part of “the cool kids”. From that, I experienced compassion and healing, as I know that I have been that distant, dorky kid. The latchkey kid with just a couple friends that seemed to be patronizingly “throwing me a bone”, until the “cool kids” were around, and then it was as if they barely knew me. It is amazing when you truly connect with this group on the fringe of the mainstream. Once you get past some of their social quirkiness and “uniqueness” you discover that they are really great people. More loyal and faithful to relationships than those that see “friendships” as a dime a dozen. People who only have a few friends, tend to value those friends very highly. Once you connect with one of these outsiders, the last thing you want to do is help them become like the mainstream “cool kids”, so the Lutherans taught me, what you want to do is help them overcome their fears and become the best version of themselves. This is much more sustainable, and healthy. Far healthier than helping real, but perhaps somewhat awkward, people put on a façade and become ‘fake’ like so many others. What does sustainable life with you actually look like? I say all of this, gentlemen, to say that when you are developing a wardrobe, especially one intended to help attract a female, you should consider your awkward tendencies that may be off-putting, your goal, and what is sustainable over the long-term, and then dress to connect, rather than dressing to impress, or being oblivious to such things as style.

Launching a New Enterprise Written by Justin Gaynor

Starting a new business is exciting! As we journey through life, we engage in various activities, and we discover things that we thoroughly enjoy. Sometimes we can take those passions and monetize them in a very fruitful way. As many of you know, I love helping entrepreneurs build strong, fruitful businesses. So, I launched General Media Consulting Co. in January of 2020. Now that we have been in business for over two years and had an opportunity to help a landscape lighting company in South Florida, a tiki bar and seafood restaurant, a church and a para-church ministry, a t-shirt design company, a health food store and massage business, a stump-grinding business, as well as my younger brother’s tree services business, and more…I decided to do something new and fresh this year. When I set up my S-Corp in the state of Florida, I was able to do so in such a way that I am able to engage in any and all lawful business in the State of Florida, under the umbrella of the S-Corp. So far, this includes the primary business: consulting and strategic management services, then the supporting services (marketing, etc.), then, as of around October of last year, Real Estate services offered through Keller Williams Realty Florida Partners, my brokerage covering, and now…and I am very excited about this…Designer Landscape Lighting!

30

Designer Landscape Lighting is a DBA (“Doing Business As”) registered under General Media Consulting and is allowing me to find further expression of my love for the arts and design, as well as architecture and the beautiful natural resources we have here in my home State of Florida. The time that I spent on staff with Illumination FL, and then having them as one of General Media Consulting’s first clients, has been tremendously helpful in the launch of Designer Landscape Lighting in Central Florida. I called up my friend, Tim Salopek, the owner of Illumination FL to let him know what I was going to be doing up here and express my appreciation for all that I was able to learn from Illumination FL while working on the team there in Business Development. Then it was on towards making this vision a reality. With a very straight forward business plan in place, I began connecting with some of the vendors that I had worked with and securing relationships. These vendors are able to provide commercial quality landscape lighting components that are not sold to the general public. Due to modern technology, they were able to help me set up what I like to call a “just-in-time” inventory system to keep my overhead as low as possible while ensuring prompt delivery of system installation for my customers. Once the lighting design for their property is approved and the deposit placed, my team will typically be able to install the systems within 3 -5 business days. As we grow, it will be my goal to reduce that time, but first things first. The important thing with business is to learn from those that God places in your life, to do right by them, expressing gratitude and respect, and then to grow in your professional life as the Lord provides. I mention the importance of doing right by those you learn from in business, because they have invested in the development of transferable skills in your life. Unfortunately, I have seen some turn around and bring harm to their previous mentors and colleagues by stealing their customer lists and going to a local competitor, trashing their name and brand in order to get their customers, and worse. However, if someone does good to you, even if you part on less than favorable terms, you should be grateful, remember the golden rule, and the command to speak evil of no one. It will serve you well in business and life, because a person reaps what they sow.

Bela Lisboa A Restaurant Review by Justin Gaynor

On occasion, in my travels, I come across small mom and pop restaurants that impress themselves on my heart. This is not only because the food is excellent, but also because the atmosphere seems to transport me to distant lands of intrigue. The first time that I shared a meal with Dean Stuart outside of the walls of the Church building it was at Bela Lisboa Restaurant. It was a truly memorable experience. My friend is an ordained minister in the Anglican communion, and we had an opportunity to minister together at the Port Orange seashore, and then head to Bela Lisboa for lunch located at 3510 S. Nova Road, Port Orange, FL 32129. The restaurant offers a wonderful selection of traditional Portuguese and Romanian dishes. The proprietors, Joe and Anca Vagos, are not new to the hospitality industry. Joe is Portuguese and Anca is Romanian. Their first Bela Lisboa Restaurant in the US was launched in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 2017. The location Dean and I were dining at has been here in Port Orange for about a year now. Joe and Anca also owned similar restaurants overseas before coming to the United States to seek their fortune in 1981. Visit: www.belalisboa.com

38

With all of the delicious meals on offer, I just had to ask Joe what his favorite was. He responded, “I am a fisherman, so my favorite is the Cataplana!” He was referring to the “Cataplana de Peixe e Marisco”. This is a traditional Portuguese dish from the region of Algarve, the southernmost region of Portugal known for its low cliffs, amazing beaches, and world class golf resorts. The name of the dish comes from a copper pot that the stew is prepared in called a cataplana. It offers various types of seafood such as prawns, fish, and a lobster tomato sauce, with potatoes. Joe created a variation of the dish due to customer demand called Arroz e Marisco which uses rice instead of potatoes. Either way it is a house specialty! In addition to being able to steal Joe away from the kitchen where he regularly serves as head chef for a brief conversation, I had an opportunity to talk with Theodore “Teddy” Ferens, the restaurant manager. He was able to share a little more about Joe and Anca’s story and the extensive menu. When Dean and I ordered, Dean went with the Picanha Brazilian Cut, a tender piece of meat skewered and served with a garlic smashed potato and fresh vegetables. I ordered the Salmão, a deliciously grilled salmon filet, with fresh vegetables, a smashed garlic potato, and a sort of fig pureé. It was absolutely delicious with a very reasonable portion size. Teddy and Joe also shared with me about a special dining experience the restaurant hosts on the first Thursday of each month. It’s called, “Candlelit Dinner”. The special celebration begins at 4pm and goes till 10pm with live music starting at 6pm. This February, the “Candlelit Dinner” will be on February 3rd, 2022 and will feature live music from special guest and saxophone player Joel Dennis. Mark your calendars because it is going to be a truly magical evening!

Joel Dennis Written by Justin Gaynor

This month I had an opportunity to catch up with local saxophone musician, Joel Dennis. With a little direction and encouragement by his dad, Gene Dennis, a big band saxophone player, Joel has been wailing on the sax for more than 50 years. A transplant to the Daytona Beach music scene from Boston, Massachusetts about ten years ago, Joel got into the travel industry as his primary vocation. He was extremely successful until COVID hit and essentially shut his industry down and he was let go. It was at that point that Joel decided to focus his attention on his passion for music. Now, early on, Joel’s musical style was shaped by the likes of Bob Seger, The Rolling Stones, and Bruce Springsteen, but as his talent matured, he started leaning much further toward blues and jazz. You will usually be able to hear him at local venues such as River Deck in New Smyrna Beach, Jerry’s, local fine dining establishments, and other venues. He has discovered a niche amongst people that really enjoy soothing jazz and classic blues. You can check out a sample of his music when you click HERE!

ARBORIST...ACTION! Written by Justin Gaynor If you have always loved climbing on stuff, this may be the gear and career you need! Gentleman’s Purpose is all about helping guys discover their purpose in life, and empowering them to fulfill that purpose, all while living a healthy, balanced lifestyle. And you know what? Sitting in a cubicle eight hours a day for 50 years is simply not what a lot of guys are built to do. Investing in developing a trade skill where you can enjoy the outdoors during the day, breath in fresh air, and there’s nobody looking for vanilla chai latte extra hot with two squirts of mocha anywhere to be seen. If that sounds even remotely inspiring to you, then companies like Arborist Action Professional Tree Services out of Central Florida are always looking for career-minded tree climbers and arborists. It is a career, too. These guys can make some serious bank and, at the end of the day, while the work might be hard and dirty, the money is clean. A professional tree climber / arborist can sleep well at night as gentleman that knows he’s doing what’s right for himself and his family, with integrity. Not to mention providing a quality, useful service to his community. Check out the gear in this month’s GEAR section and then check out the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) to see if this might be a path for you!

54

Chainsaw Pants A good pair of chainsaw pants are durable, comfortable, and provide increased protection. There are areas of your life where you can go for lower quality, when it comes to keeping all of your appendages, it’s not a place to make cuts.

55

Buckingham Manufacturing’s “Arborist Deluxe Climbing Kit” Most Climbers want their own equipment. Even with all safety precautions taken and the very best training, there are still risks that are very real. This kit is of the kighest quality currently available on the market. If you are investing in your future as an arborist, quality gear is important.

56

STIHL MS 151 T C-E This chainsaw is the lightest saw in STIHL’s line-up of climbing saws. This machine’s lightweight will reduce fatigue and yet it’s powerful, gas-powered motor and manuverability will enable significantly more in-tree work to be accomplished in less time.

57

Teufelberger CEclimb with Tachyon Climbing Rope All rope is not the same. You will want something that is strong, durable, and easy to see. You wouldn’t be the first climber to cut through his own rope, but its an experience that is likely better to read about than to endure. This particular kit comes with a hitch climber pulley, 2 DMM oval carabiners, an Ocean prusik (installed on the climb line), a handy ropebag with backpack straps and handle, as well as instructions.

58

KASK ZENITH Helmet Combo Not all helmet systems are built the same. First of all, I can tell you that I’ve seen too many guys get overconfident and stupid and then their saw kicks back, a limb falls in an unexpected way, and numberous other “unexpected” things. Expect and prepare for the “unexpected”: Wear a quality helmet and eye/face protection when you are on the jobsite. Secondly, if you are going to have this thing on your head 6 to 12 hours a day, it’s worth investing in something that is comfortable and fits well. Another place you don’t want to be a knucklehead and skimp.

MONTANA: GLACIER NATIONAL PARK Written by Justin Gaynor

I love to travel and I always seem to have some destination or other in my mind. Montana, for some strange reason, has never been one of them. So, when my younger brother told me he was getting ready to leave for his annual vacation, I was a little surprised when he said he was taking his family to Montana. Not that he and I are always on the same page, but most of the time we do like a lot of the same things. So, this month’s travel article is second hand, as I get to live vicariously through him for this journey. What is so great about Montana? Well, for a tree guy that runs his own business and constantly has his phone blowing up, emails, and so forth... Montana is the place you can truly enjoy the quietness of nature and get away from all the hustle and bustle of Daytona Beach. Stillness. Quiet. Peace. It was something that he and his fam really needed. You and your family may need that as well. You can get a cabin that sleeps four for two full weeks this February for less than $2000. Of course, there are some other options that offer more and less amenities, but the point is, if you need some time with the fam, to unplug from all the devices, and just enjoy each other and nature...Montana might be exactly what you need! 68
