The Story of Life Written by Justin Gaynor Most people understand that a fruit tree begins from a small seed that is planted in good soil, watered, and properly tended to. When the seed from an existing tree drops it’s fruit, much of the seed within that fruit won’t make it. Jesus tells a parable that includes four different scenarios, let’s take a look at the parable… “Behold, a sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds came and devoured them. Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth; and they immediately sprang up because they had no depth of earth. But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked them. But others fell on good ground and yielded a crop: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” Fast forward to today and we are looking at the reversal of the landmark Roe vs. Wade court decision that made the practice of surgically and chemically killing children in their mother’s womb a legal practice. From a Biblical perspective, life begins in the consciousness of God. By the time a man exists, every seed within him that God sees growing to maturity is intended to flourish. However, one, we live in a world that is at present impacted by the presence of sin, and, two, there are spiritual entities that seek to kill, and steal, and destroy. As with the fruit tree, there are only a few of the seeds within a man that will find their way to good soil, be cared for, nourished, and that will grow to flourishing maturity. The infant mortality rate in America, if you don’t include the systematized genocide of unborn children, is actually very low compared to many places in the world. Places where women begin giving birth much earlier. They also find it necessary to give birth to more children as a means of survival for their bloodline. With the reversal of Roe vs. Wade, a woman will have a much higher barrier to overcome with regard to her choice to murder a child in her womb. People tend to think things through more clearly regarding moral issues when there are community-imposed consequences for doing certain things that are harmful to individuals and society.

10

The reversal of Roe vs. Wade does not mean things will get easier. The probability of young men and women across America having a mass epiphany that choosing to become more virtuous is what God is really after is very low. However, because of greater consequences with the abortion option off the table, the level of casual sex outside of covenant relationship may be somewhat reduced. Women may begin to value their bodies more and not give themselves over to every Tom, Dick, and Harry. Young men will perhaps think twice when $300 will no longer snuff out their unwanted children that result from their irresponsible sexual escapades and allow them to go on their merry way with no concern for the women they are defiling or the children they are pressuring them to abort. As a brief aside, you should have seen the horrified faces of my 6 year old and 5 year old nephews when I explained to them that mommys and daddys used to be able to kill their children while they were still in their mommy’s tummy. By the grace of God, I was able to go on to explain that our country just changed the laws so than moms and dads can no longer legally kill their children while they are in their mommy’s tummy. I shared with them how blessed they were that their mom and dad were responsible and that they are here today because of that. They simply couldn’t believe that a mommy and daddy could possibly do that to their own kids, or that the fact that they were even here could not be taken for granted given how much evil there is in this world. The fact is that society will have to adjust and make available resources to mother’s that would have aborted, but now carry the child to birth and then give the child up for adoption. We have the systems in place and progress has been made, but it is far from a perfect system at this point and there is still much to be done. So, gentlemen, what are our actionable points from all these goings on? First, we must lead in valuing our own sexuality and the sexuality of the women in our lives. Where possible, we must choose to be husbands to the women we embrace sexually. We must be dads to the children of the women we marry, whether they are ours or those of a previous, unrestorable relationship. We must also be good neighbors to the single dads and moms in our sphere. Next, we should consider how to participate in making sure every child in our local community has a home, food, and the things necessary to flourish. Finally, we need to step into action in the ways and areas that God calls us to, even when…especially when... it is difficult.

The Men We Choose To Be Written by Justin Gaynor

There have been few men that I’ve personally met that I would attribute greatness to. Perhaps that is because my standards are so high, or perhaps it is because I fear God and would choose to avoid any form of idolatry where a cult of personality may mislead my affections. Either way, I do notice when ordinary men do great things. Things that help me to better understand the heart of God. If you have been reading Gentleman’s Purpose for any period of time, you have likely heard me mention my friend and step-dad, Ken Pine. Ken Pine entered into my life when my younger brother was around four years old. Ken and my mom met after my dad and mom had been divorced, attempted to reconcile and fell apart again. My mom was a single mom with both myself and my younger brother in tow. This man decided to step into that situation and love my mom and both of us. That is no small endeavor and I can tell you that I personally put the mans patience to the test on more than one occasion. Yet he stuck it through. Not only did he stand with us, but he legally adopted my brother, whose biological father jumped ship from day one. My dad had loved my brother deeply as a father figure while he and my mom were still together, but the complications of the blended family placed my dad in a situation where letting go was the very difficult, but seemingly sensible thing to do. The years beyond Ken Pine’s choice to not only marry my mom, but to be a father figure, friend, and mentor to me and utlimately an adoptive dad to my little brother would prove to be tumultuous. Ken Pine has endured far more than most sane men would ever willingly do. However, Ken grew up the son of faithful deacon in the Church of Christ and steadfast love and faithfulness have been bred into the man, even though you will rarely catch him in a church building. 18

Ken’s life of faith includes very simple prayers each day. His service to the Kingdom of God includes intentionally carrying around things in his vehicle to help folks that happen to have a flat tire or in some other way have found themselves stranded on the roadways. He will tell you he simply does it for the sensation of doing some good in this ol’ world. Ken Pine is not a perfect man. He is a hard working man. He is a man that will tell you the way he sees things with unapologetic honesty. Whether it’s right or wrong, you’ll have to decide, but he’ll let you do that. He’s not overly concerned that people see everything the way he sees it. He is a man that wakes up each day and tries to do the next right thing. The Bible tells us that we should not grow weary in doing good. It talks of the process God uses to develop the character of a man. My mom passed away almost ten years ago. This man, Ken Pine, is still being a dad to my younger brother, and to me...when I let him. He is obligated to do so simply by his own sense of what is right, and the love that has grown in his own heart through the years. Recently, I had the priviledge of watching Ken stand with my brother at his wedding. To see Ken dance with his new daughter in law to the same song he once danced to with my mom on their wedding day was a tear soaked moment for me, and deeply meaningful for him. While there are laws in place for the lawless. Community standards that keep murderers and rapists, crooked judges and corrupt police officers from eroding the fabric of a fair, just and humane society, we have the ability to choose the type of men we want to be. Gentlemen, we get to choose to do the next right thing today, then tomorrow, and on into our future. Make good choices.

Practical Summer Strength Training Written by Justin Neil Gaynor Most men admire strength. It’s just in us. We think of men who have strong character like John Wayne or Ronald Reagan. Men who are physically strong like Arnold Schwarzenegger or Jason Momoa. We are intriqued by men who demonstrate mental strength like Justin Rose or Colin Powell. Some guys want to be strong for show, and that’s ok, but this article is about strength trainining for “go”! Our personal style significantly influences our body shape, or is it the other way around? We often take our passions and seek icons that are really good at what we enjoy or might enjoy and look to them as models, and sometimes even idols. This influences the areas of our lives that we invest time, energy, and resources...and we often times become like what we behold. Based on your personal style, how do you invest in growing stronger? Practically speaking. If you enjoy golfing, who do you look to as your inspiration? What types of excercise can you engage in this summer to become a better golfer? Maybe golf, or sports in general, are not your thing. If you enjoy lounging at the beach, how can you grow more confident and healthy in that setting? If you enjoy reading, how can you challenge yourself to become a stronger reader? We often hit plateaus in life and we stop looking for the next breakthrough. Now, I personally believe there is a lot to be said for contentment with godliness, but God’s word also challenges us to see ourselves as though we are running a race. To visualize ourselves in the boxing ring, fighting to come out on top. As we get older, and life beats us down through the years, it is easy to settle into complacency. I want to challenge you to reimagine yourself a little. What if you were passionate again? What if you wanted to be more useful, more helpful, more respected, stronger, faster, smarter. What if, this summer, you decided to embrace your personal style and get into some practical strength training?

The 411 on the 1031 Written by Justin Gaynor

If you have been invested in real estate during the last ten years, you have likely done very well. The year over year increases in the value of real property have been significantly outpacing previous seasons in the real estate market. So much so that the Federal Reserve has come out and said they are specifically targeting this area of the economy with interest rate hikes to cool things down. What I want to share with you this month is a strategy that has been around for a very long time, but it may be something you are unfamiliar with or that you need to learn more about. The 1031 Exchange and the 1031 Construction Exchange. Let’s say you bought a small strip center in 2012 for $750,000. All the units are rented and it is producing a good income for you. However, you called a REALTOR®️ recently to give you an idea of the current market value of the property and were delighted to discover that the REALTOR’s opinion was that you could sell the investment property for $6 - $6.5 million dollars. You know that a huge chunk of those capital gains are going to be heavily taxed, so you ask about your options. This is where the 1031 exchange comes into play. A 1031 allows you to exchange an investment property for a “like-kind” property and defer the payment on those capital gains. While you have done really well with the strip center, it requires a lot of time and attention and you would really like to shift to something that will allow you to travel more. “Like-kind” is a very broad term as far as the IRS is concerned, so you actually have more options than you would think. The important thing though is the deferral of the tax liability so that you can allow your money to work for you for as long as possible. Money, is a great servant, but a terrible master as they say. The 1031 empowers you 30

to redirect that servant in a way that better suites your current needs and wants while minimizing any adverse effects on your buying power. There are some things you need to know about 1031 exchanges and 1031 construction exchanges. First, there are strict timeframes that you must contend with. Within 45 days of selling your investment property you must declare the property(ies) you are interested in choosing as a replacement property. Within 180 days you must close on the purchase of that property, or properties. Next, you cannot take personal control of the funds at closing, but you must have a QI, or Qualified Intermediary, set up an escrow account for you. The funds from the sale of your investment property will transfer directly from the account of the buyer of your property into the escrow account, and then into the account of the owner of the replacement investment property you chose. In choosing to not take possession of the funds, you capture the tax deferral benefit. The replacement investment property must be of equal or greater value than the property you sold, otherwise you may lose some of the tax benefit. If the replacement investment property is something that you want to construct from the ground up, or make improvements to that you want to be included in the value of the exchange, it gets a little more tricky. You cannot take possession of the dirt while the construction, or renovations are taking place, if you want to include the associated expenses for the build in the value of the exchange. There’s a lot more to it, but that’s why you bring in the big guns and many times certain 1031 investments are only available to what are considered “accredited investors.” This is just a brief overview of a very helpful tool for the modern real estate investor. This is a transaction that should involve your REALTOR®️, your accountant, your attorney, and a Qualified Intermediary. A Taste of Cuba A Restaurant Review by Justin Gaynor

It was an amazing weekend! I travelled north, about an hour or so, to St. Augustine, FL. My younger brother was heading to the altar with his beautiful fiance’ to tie the knot. The wedding was on the schedule for 4pm and we couldn’t show up to the venue until after the bride and bridal party arrived at 1pm. So, we had a perfect window of time to explore St. Augustine and get some food! My brother and I had both spent some time in Miami and we love Cuban cuisine. So, we were very pleased to have stumbled upon “The Cuban Cafe’ and Bakery” located at 100 St. George St., St.Augustine, FL 32084. No one in our party were breakfast or brunch eaters (except me...I can always eat...), so it was perfect. They were able to choose a couple fresh pasteries from the bakery case that were ready to go. As for me? I had to try their Cuban Sandwich and a hot cup of Cafe’ Con Leche’. That meant waiting while my compadre’s enjoyed empanadas and guava pastries, but it was worth the wait. Those Cuban ladies know how to make a sammich! The Cafe’ Con Leche’ was just what the doctor ordered for a powerful, sweet pick me up. It would have been nice if they had a restroom on site since we had my 6 year old and 5 year old nephews with us, but other than that, the place was authentic Cuban to the bone. Next time you’re in St. Augustine, stop in and enjoy this amazing ethnic experience. Click Here to Visit The Cuban Cafe’ and Bakery Website 38

Procrastination can kill your productivity. At my company, General Media Consulting Co., we talk a lot about “fruitfulness”. That often means doing the “plowing” and “clearing”...the grunt work, first, before you can plant and water. In Scott Allan’s book, he offers some practical guidance on mastering the habit of doing difficult work.

Understanding how humans work on the soul level and the spirit level can add real value to human life. Robert J. Charles puts his PhD and DMin to good use in this book to help us address negative and unhelpful thought patterns. It’s not so much about affirmations and thinking positively, though it may include those things. It’s about getting things in proper order and living rightly and wisely, particularly with our thought lives.

The smartest people can make some of the dumbest decisions. In Keith J. Cunningham’s book he explores what it looks like to make better choices and wiser moves. Often times when I’m playing tennis, if I slow down and focus on keeping a consistent volley going, rather than focusing on smashing the ball, I score more. Not because of my great placement or power, but because the other person will make an error trying to be o verly aggressive. Keith puts it this way, “Operators react and sweat. Owners think and plan.” Take “The Road Less Stupid” and own the game.

Punk is not Dead. Written by Cliff Morris

Hot Water Music. A band name that brings a new feel that also reflects their punk rock ethics. When meeting HWM the first time I was younger and not impressed. The band continiously had a tention, uncomfortable tention. Now, looking back, I realise the band I put to the side, brought emotions unfiltered like most bands can only dream of. Growing up in Florida, my first two bands rolled through Central Florida with various gigs all the time. But there is truly something about Gainesville Rock City. Bringing bands such as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Less Than Jake, Sister Hazel, Against Me!,and much more. Maybe it’s the swamps creepily settled around a now bustling college town that makes G-ville a hot spot for great music. So, Hot Water Music, let’s have a little insight into their past and their newest album. March 18th, 2022 after a chaotic two years with covid,Feel The Void brings the return of producer Brian McTernan, who worked with the band on 2001’s A Flight And A Crash, 2002’s Caution and 2004’s The New What Next, often thought of as Hot Water Music’s classic period. From the moment the dark, portentous intensity of “Another Breath” kicks the record off, it’s clear that this is a band at the peak of their powers.

48

49

50

McTernan’s involvement was incredibly instrumental in channeling that spirit and energy - the intense urgency of “Killing Time”, “Newtown Scraper” and “Scratch On,” the nervous but positive emotional energy of “Hearts Stay Full” and the title track, the reeling chorus of “The Weeds,” the surging, powerful roar of closer “Lock Up.” Feel The Void also finds Wollard and Ragan singing dual vocals again (and to devastating effect) something that should definitely please longtime fans of the band. Ultimately, it’s a spirit of perseverance, defiance and hope that defines this record, and which also demonstrates how steadfast Hot Water Music has remained in it’s beliefs and ideas. The world might have changed drastically in the past 25 or so years, but the reason why the band makes music has remained exactly the same as it ever was. What’s more, the music is just as powerful, vital and full of meaning, and just as effective at counteracting the emptiness, pain and suffering that, sadly,is an inherent part of life. With that being said, Hot Water Music has shown us that as times change, we don’t have to just accept the new. We can keep our same ethics and breathe new life into them.

Learning To Fly When You Ain’t Got Wings Written by Justin Gaynor Growing up, my step-dad used to have these amazing RC planes hanging from the ceiling in his house. In all the years that I’ve known Ken Pine, my step-dad, I’ve never seen him fly one. You see, they belonged to his dad. Ken cared for his dad deeply and when he passed away, it hit him pretty hard. It is unfortunate for me that I never had an opportunity to meet Ken’s dad. He had an amazing story as an American, a serviceman, a deacon in his church, a man with a brilliant mind, photographic memory, and just an all around good dude. One of his favorite hobbies was constructing and flying remote control planes. It is a fun and challenging hobby, though certainly not inexpensive. Though you would likely spend significantly more money playing golf in the long run...unless, of course, you are a really bad RC pilot. In this month’s gear section, in the age of drone planes I want to touch on some basic equipment to get you started in this hobby and the niche group of enthusiasts that was pretty much the predecessor of the drone. Happy flying! JNG

Visit the Real Ireland Written by Cliff Morris

In my limited time in Ireland, I was blessed to have the opportunity to see “the real Ireland”. Not what movies, and American culture has made the Irish into. When you fly into Dublin, that is the only place in Ireland you can get away with ordering a Car Bomb. Anywhere else, well, you will most likely get a look of complete disgust, and depending on where you are, you might not get served at all. Also, “pro tip”, Jameson is Ireland’s Jack Daniels. Is it great? Sure! But what you want to explore are the micro distilleries. Teelings is a larger brand that is actually 100% Irish owned, and ordering that makes you a distinguished traveller, instead of clumbsy tourist. The Irish are friendly people. Don’t be afraid to ask, “what’s new” or “what’s cool, and what isn’t.” Personally, I’m known to be a chatty son-of-a-gun, so I make friends anywhere. Most folks in Ireland are essentially the same. One friendly conversation can turn into dinner at the O’Briens house easily.(Real home made Shepherd’s Pie with fresh lamb and veggies) Next thing you know, family and friends are all there, and it is IMPOSSIBLE to leave or say no to their hospitality. When you leave, you leave full, and in my experience, pretty tipsy and always with some tokens of appriciation. (for me it was a bottle of Teelings, and a shirt from the home pub, Lenehans Public House. But exploring the country is what it is all about. So a little more about Ireland... Modern Chemistry founded by Robert Boyle. The game of Croquet (which is mostly seen in England) created in Ireland.

The cure for Cholera, thanks to William Brooke O’shaughnessy. Seismology created by Robert Mallet, and of course the Kelvin Scale from William Thomson. Irish are hard working, honest, and loyal to a fault. They care about family over everything else. It’s one of the main reasons I’m pround of my Irish heritage. If you are lucky enough to visit the Emerald Isle, here are a few tips to a real Ireland.. Experiencing a traditional music session at a proper Irish pub: While there are plenty of shows for the tourist crowd, nothing beats the energy, atmosphere, and authenticity of a genuine small-town traditional music session. The instructions for getting the most out of a session are simple: Buy a pint, grab a seat (preferably one near a smoldering peat fire), and wait for the action to begin. We have listed some of the best places around Ireland, including pubs such as the Long Valley in Cork or Gus O’Connors, and McGann’s in little Doolin County Clare. Getting lost down the back roads of County Kerry: It’s Ireland’s most visited county by far, and if you stick to the beaten path in summer it’s filled with tourists. Instead, veer off onto the winding back roads and allow yourself to get gloriously, hopelessly lost. There are always new discoveries to be made down it’s breathtaking byways. Feeling the bullet holes in the walls of the General Post Office (Dublin, County Dublin): It’s hard to overstate what a potent national symbol the G.P.O. is. Yes, it’s still a working post office, but Patrick Pearse read his independence proclamation from its front steps in 1916 (the original document is displayed inside) and in 1922 it was the scene of fierce civil war fighting. Bullet scars still pock the facade. Touch them and you touch history. Meandering down the long stone passage at Newgrange (County

Meath): Sacred to the ancients, this passage tomb is more than 5,000 years old. That’s older than the Egyptian pyramids or Stonehenge. Wander down the atmospheric central tunnel and try to visualize how many generations have passed since it was built, it’s a mind-blowing exercise. Rent a boat from Emerald Star (Le Boat outside of Ireland) and enjoy the rivers Shannon and Erne. On these gorgeous river ways, you will see a part of Ireland few get the opportunity to see. Cruise the beautiful waterways, and make sure you take your time to get through all 18 locks. Exploring the Old English Market in Cork (County Cork): Cork is a county made for foodies. (My favorites O’Mahoney Family Butchers, and On the Pigs Back confectionary. In addition to Kinsale, a coastal village that’s become a hub for top restaurants, the eponymous main city is home to one of the country’s finest (and oldest) food markets. A walk through here is a feast for the senses. Riding motorcycles through the Burren (County Clare): Ireland is full of memorable landscapes, but this is the most unique. For miles, this exposed coastal countryside has a haunting, alien feel, although it’s strikingly beautiful too. Try to be here as the sun goes down, when the craggy limestone planes turn an evening shade of red. Hiking the path down to the Giant’s Causeway (County Antrim): Taking the half-mile walk down to this extraordinary natural wonder of 37,000 columns of basalt sitting at the base of cliffs along the Antrim Coast is like passing through a fantasy landscape. Geologists claim these rocks were formed millions of years ago by cooling volcanoes. But don’t you prefer to believe they were really made by giants, as the ancients thought? Ireland is a beautiful country filled with even better people. So share a pint, kiss the Blarney Stone, find some quartz at the Cliffs of Moher, and take in the gorgeous sights at Killarney National Park. Once you experience “the real Ireland” you may never want to leave. - Slante’
