Do What You Were Sent To Do, Trust God. Written by Justin Gaynor
Men carry burdens that we were never meant to carry. This magazine is all about helping men figure out what our purpose is and then helping us to fulfill that purpose while keeping our balance in everything. That includes learning to discern what burdens are not ours to bear. In Scripture we see Jesus tell his disciples that when they enter a city, if that city doesn’t receive them and their message, simply shake the dust off their feet and move on. At the end of the book, He says, “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.” The Apostle Paul says, “For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.” Are new believers to be baptized? Yes, of course. But that was not part of the purpose or assignment God gave to Paul. Is wisdom a good thing? Yes, wisdom from above is wonderful, but that is not the method Paul was to utilize. Paul eventually came to terms with this. A man of his intellect and education, it wasn’t easy for him. He had to ‘become a fool’ so that he could actually gain true wisdom. This is part of developing a teachable spirit and we all need to do this. It is humbling, but it will help us to rediscover our sense of wonder and awe regarding who God is and what He is doing in and through us. What is hindering you from identifying your specific purpose? Is having a teachable spirit important to you and if so, what do you need to be intentional about it in order to develop that part of your character? 10

Love Language: Quality Time Written by Justin Gaynor The book “The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate” written by Gary Chapman has been mentioned several times in the pages of Gentleman’s Purpose eMagazine. In this article, I want to explore one of the love languages that is, in my opinion, unique. The love language of quality time. There are three reasons this love language is in a class of its own. Quality time requires knowing the values and preferences of the other person in the broadest areas of life, time is something we cannot gain more of and once certain seasons are gone, there is no regaining them, and time, specifically timing, is the one thing God the Father retains complete authority over, this one thing He has not even given to the Son. In order to spend quality time with someone, you need to know what their definition of quality is. Some see quality as physical activities, say playing golf together or conversations over coffee. Others don’t need a word spoken, they just want you to be present in the chair next to them while they watch their favorite movie. In order to get to a place of knowing the types of things the woman in your life enjoys investing her ‘together time’ in, you have to pay attention. The reality is that even if your beloved has identified ‘quality time’ as one of her top love languages, she likely hasn’t thought through what that looks like most of the time. I say most of the time, because she won’t always enjoy a 20 to 30 minute conversation with you in a quiet place right when you get home from work to unpack her day. That may only be something she values for a season and then she may be more interested in waking up early to walk around the block and talk through the plans in her head for the day in front of her. The key in this is to be attentive, flexible, and most importantly available, emotionally and actually.
18
Time is not a renewable resource. We each have a few brief years in this life and then, like a vapor of smoke, we are gone. This is especially important to remember as you and your woman raise children. Together, you will have roughly 18 years to establish a strong foundation in your children and prepare them for life. This time is extremely important to moms and it should be even more important to you, dads. It is your responsibility to be the spiritual leader of your home, your wife is your glory, so her passion for the well-being of your children should be a reflection of your own heart. Returning to the topic of quality time with your mate, you will have to understand the importance of the time spent between the two of you alone and all the other aspects of life that demand your time and attention. The relationship between husband and wife is a picture of the relationship between Christ and the Church. The time of one on one communication and intimacy (emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and physical) is the point from which the two of you receive the strength and internal resources to succeed in all the other activities. I say all this to say you need to number your days and be aware of and intentional about how you invest your time. Lastly, be aware that while you and your mate make plans and have preferences, the times and seasons are in God’s hands and He is the one that will direct your steps. This means holding things, circumstances, and your routine or timing loosely, being watchful for what God is doing in your life together. This can be challenging, but just understand that God knows the plans He has for you. Plans to prosper you in all things and to keep you in good health while he sanctifies and prospers your soul. God is not out to get you and He intends no harm towards you whatsoever. It is important that you and your mate know this. What does quality time look like between you and the special lady in your life? What are some things in your life that are stealing quality time from you and what can you do to get free of those things and reallocate that time to something of higher value? 19

Are You A Car Guy? Written by Justin Gaynor
Growing up in Volusia County where the Daytona 500, Pepsi 400, Bike Week and all sorts of other motorsports occur annually, I have developed a passion for cars and bikes. How about you? Are you a car guy? The kind of car a gentleman drives is a reflection of what he values. Those values may change due to necessity or season of life, but at the core, with all other outside influences notwithstanding, what is your automotive style? Modern Sports Car The modern sports car, from the newest 2021 Corvette Stingray to Lamborghini’s Aventador SVJ, offers the highest quality levels of performance technology, innovation, materials, and power. They are sleek, sexy, and most importantly...they are fast. Classic Sports Car Perhaps you love the speed and look of a sports car, but you also want to maintain a unique sense of class and sophistication? How about a fully restored, all original 1963 Porsche 356 B Cabriolet or a Jaguar E-Type? The trick here is making sure that the vehicle has been professionally restored and well maintained. The more rare the model you choose, like a fine wine or scotch, the more powerfully it will speak to your unique style and taste. American Muscle American automotive companies have been trying to tap into the vintage vibes for some time. However, there is still nothing quite like the Detroit steel produced during the golden age of American muscle cars. My first car as a licensed driver was a 1973 Buick Skylark Custom Convertible with a 350, 4-barrel carburetor, while there are certainly more powerful American Muscle cars available, such as the Plymouth Superbird with it’s stock 425 horsepower 426 cubic inch 24
real vintage that is really affordable...

(7.0 Liter) HEMI motor, the fact remains that an American muscle car speaks volumes about a man’s style. Touring Car If long distance drives in comfortable luxury is more your speed and differentiation isn’t a huge priority, there can be no better choice in my opinion than a Mercedes E-class. German engineering, classic luxury and unparalleled reliability, the E-Class is my personal favorite, though you may also consider the Chrysler 300 or powerful Genesis G90. VanLife If you consider yourself a modern hippie or nomad, you may have become fascinated by the recent explosion of the #VANLIFE sub-culture. An alternative lifestyle resulting from a mix of nostalgia and a practical response to the high cost of home ownership and rents, #VANLIFE has been embraced by a generation that values experiences more highly than long term stability. The shift of the modern workplace to include swaths of remote career opportunities has made this a viable option for the adventurous and quirky. Some favorites include fully outfitted and restored Volkswagon Kombis and luxuriously converted Mercedes Sprinter vans. Truckin’ Pickup trucks used to be affordable workhorses, but today there are models that will run you as much as a sports car and with comparative power. The best selling pickup truck in America this year is the Ford F-Series, a model that has been leading the way for years. With performance versions like the F-150 Tremor and Raptor these are great for the guy whose style is a little more rugged, yet willing to help a neighbor move across town when called upon.
26
Jeep Without question, in a class of their own, is the Jeep. Not much has changed with the styling of these all-terrain vehicles and like the cult of Volkswagen Kombi owners, Jeep owners have their own culture and traits that seem common to every Jeep owner, ready and willing for topless adventures anytime and anywhere. Definitely a unique style and bold statement. What vehicle declares your style and character most accurately? What is the best memory you have with regard to driving an automobile?

Building a Business from the Ground Up Written by Justin Gaynor
The Concept Every business begins as a concept or idea. Where do these visions come from? Some form of inspiration. A good experience that moves a person to say, “I enjoy this...I want to do this for a living.” A bad experience that agitates a person to say, “There is money to be made here and I think I can add a lot of value to this industry.” It could be something completely new based on a product idea. Every business begins with a spark of imagination, a creative jolt that persuades someone to invest their time and resources to birth a new venture.
The Plan Next, a business begins the process of leaving the world of ethereal hopes and dreams and entering into real, tangible human experience. This next step is important. Grappling with the concept, wrestling with all of the practical ins and outs, potential, and challenges is vital to building a business wisely, a business that will endure. Knowing, and writing up, the realities of the business and the market it will be operating in will allow you to develop a strategy for success. Next, how is it that your concept is going to outperform existing, similar businesses? What unique value do you add to the space? Then you want to think through what happens if you are wrong. How much money and time are you willing to put into this thing to see it succeed? If things don’t play out the way you expect, what are your contingency plans? The next thing you want to consider is who you want on your team? What kind of skillsets, education, experiences, talents, and personalities are going to be helpful in building this business? Finally, you will have to talk about 30
the money. How much money will you need to get started? How will this business grow that initial investment? What are the costs involved and the breakeven point? What will monthly overhead cost and what will be included in those costs? How are you going to price your products and services? There are a host of other questions that you will have to wrestle with in order to get a good handle on the business concept and write a useful business plan.
The Team Developing a team may not be something your business requires immediately. It may just be you for a while and that’s ok. But a growing business will, eventually, require that you hire, onboard, train, and develop a team of people. It will be helpful as you go through the process to note how you are doing things and how you would teach someone else to do that part of the job for you. As scary as it can be to let go and trust others with parts of your business, it will free up your time to do other things that you are really good at and that will require more of your attention in order to keep growing the business.
The Customer Identifying the problem your product or service solves and the type of person you are looking to help is vital. The better you understand the type of person that buys your products or services, the better equipped you are going to be to solve their problem well and turn them from being a customer into being a brand advocate. Brand advocates are the people that are pleased enough with your product or service that they will be out there selling your company to other people. When people experience a significant value, they want others to have that same experience. Your job is to provide that exceptional value experience. A mature, quality business will have 50% to 75% of it’s new business coming via word of mouth. 31
The Work Getting down to the nitty gritty is all about looking at the actual work that will need to be completed on a day to day basis in order for the business to grow. When you enter into your workspace each day, what are the essential tasks that must be completed? Write them down and develop a rhythm of completing them consistently. Then work on identifying opportunities to improve quality and efficiency. You will have non-essential functions that are helpful in developing the business as well. Learn to schedule and manage your time effectively and that will help your organiztion over the long term. Good time management and the ability to prioritize wisely is vital to any successful business culture.
The Pay The point of launching any business is to add value to individual lives and the community while making a healthy profit. In order to do that consistently, you will have to evaluate the market value of your products and services plus any premium that may result from your unique approach to providing that product or service, and then perform the work promised for the price agreed upon. Do your best to underpromise and over deliver. Integrity is of absolute importance to the long term health of a business. You will then want to consider how profits will be reinvested or saved. As a business, your cashflow
32
is the lifeblood of your business. You will need to monitor it, manage it, and grow it.
The Growth Scaling your business means looking at where you are now and where you hope to be in a year, five years, 25 years and then taking the appropriate actions to arrive at those destinations in good overall health. Once your initial setup of the business is operating at or slightly above capacity you will want to gather up all of your notes regarding how you got to where you are, and then replicate the successful aspects of your journey while learning from and avoiding your mistakes. Business, as with life in general, is a learning process. Develop a growth mindset that never fails, but always learns and grows...always becoming better.
The Exit Finally, you will want to think through what your exit plan is going to be. If this business is providing your primary source of income what is retirement going to look like for you? You could hand the business over to your heirs if they want to be involved with the business. You could hire a professional to sell the business for you to a competitor or another person that will benefit from your years of hard work. Though certainly not advisable when you have a profitable business, I have seen people simply close the doors and be done with it. Regardless of the path you take, setting goals and making these decisions in a proactive manner will significantly increase the long term viability of your business. If you would like help with any part of the process of launching and managing a healthy, fruitful business there are a lot of great, free resources available and there are professional consultants like General Media Consulting Company,1-(800)-484-9825, that can help you along the way. 33

QUEOLOGY Charleston BBQ Team (Click to check out their website!)

Located in the French Quarter of Downtown Charleston South Carolina, QUEOLOGY is a quaint little spot that I happened to eye as I first arrived. Driving around to locate a parking place, there were a lot of very nice restaurants and pubs in the area. QUEOLOGY struck me as a locals place to grab good barbeque, not overly fancy, but WOW did it smell good . I was ready to give it a go! Available parking was on the street and I had to feed the meter. I was about a block away, so it gave me a chance to stretch my legs after the long drive from Warner Robins, Georgia. There were some folks at the bar, but I was able to get a table with relative ease. I’m not sure if the waitress was new or not, but she was pretty attentive. She just didn’t strike me as someone that had been working in the restaurant biz for very long. She was very pleasant though. From the menu, I decided to go with the 6 piece chicken wings, ranch dressing, a side of mac & cheese, and a local IPA that the bartender recommended. The wings came out piping hot and the drumettes seemed to be half-way between normal drumettes and a standard chicken leg. These wings had some meat on them. The wings had the best flavor I have ever tasted. Apparently, they smoke them before they fry, season, and sauce them. They were amazing. Paying $6 for a side of mac & cheese was a little pricey compared to what I am used to, but this wasn’t Kraft from a box...this was good ol’ Baptist Church potluck Mac & Cheese...SOOOOO good! So, if you happen to be in Charleston, SC and you’re looking to grab a bite for lunch, QUEOLOGY is definitely worth a try, especially if you like wings.

My first week working as a Stockbroker for Scottrade Financial Services off of Powerline and Cypress Creek in Fort Lauderdale, FL had my new manager approaching me with a question. “Do you play golf?”, he asked. “No, not really...” “Well, you do now. We have a charity scramble this weekend.”, he responded. Now, I’m thinking to myself, “What the hell is a scramble?” I had actually played a couple par three courses with my store manager when I worked for Blockbuster video during college, but I certainly never played in a tournament of any kind before. My Branch Manager at Scottrade was good though. He would take me and some of the other folks in the office to work on chipping and putting after work sometimes. The tournament ended up being a lot less intimidating than I had anticipated. I actually had a lot of fun. It ended up being the first in many charity scrambles I would play in. Actually, one year, I even had an opportunity to bring my dad along for a round. Something I don’t think I ever imagined would happen. My dad was probably as surprised as me. The point is that, as a gentleman, learning to play one of the most gentlemanly of games is a requirement. A delightful requirement I’d say. Five to eight hours on a beautifully landscaped course, with good company, great laughs, fine whiskey, and a good cigar...well...it’s just a beautiful thing. Don’t worry about being a great golfer, just focus on having fun and try to do a little better each time you play a round. In this month’s gear section you will find some great equipment that will last you for years to come.
54
A set of Callaway APEX DCB Irons will cost around $1300 USD
55
A good driver will cost between $100 and $1000. Make sure to get one you feel comfortable with. Your ability to drive the ball well from the t-box can significantly impact your overall game.
56
If it’s true that you drive for show, it is also true that you putt for dough. Working on your chipping and putting is the most important part of the game. Yes, the approach is important, but the accuracy and skill to set it on the green and drop it in the hole will reduce your strokes significantly. Also, you can go to almost any public golf course and they will have a putting green where you can practice your chipping and putting for free, you just have to bring your own gear.
57
A good pair of golf shoes are important. When you are rotating your body with that much force your feet need to be firmly planted with cleats, otherwise you could hurt yourself or others. Also, if you are walking the course you will want a comfortable pair of shoes that will keep your feet dry and free from agitation.
58
You will lose some golf balls. It’s inevitable, and they aren’t cheap. But if you are going to play golf, you have to have balls.
59
A versatile and well constructed golf bag is essential. This particular model has a comfortable strap for carrying, a GPS pocket, and many other helpful features.

Charleston, SC : A Place For Southern Gentlemen to Grow Written by Justin Gaynor
Charleston, SC is truly a town that is experienced in grooming Southern gentlemen. Though Charleston has a rich history, many of the evils of that history are still being dealt with today. Statues such as angels standing guard with confederate soldiers defending a way of life that, in modern times, is seen for it’s violent, oppressive barbarism are a point of community division. As gentlemen, particularly Southern gentlemen, we have a responsibility to celebrate our heritage, holding fast to what is good, while repenting of foolish and antiquated ways and the things that perpetuate evil worldviews. Having spoken on these contentious issues briefly, I am happy to move on to all of the wonderful aspects of present day Charleston, SC. The beautiful seaside community offers historic architecture, an outstanding shopping district, well maintained parks and some of the best dining in the country. As I set out to explore the east coast of America, I travel with my Specialized mountain bike so I have an opportunity to get some excercise while briefly touring these amazing American cities. My day in Charleston began by finding a parking garage in the downtown area, getting geared up with a bottle of water to stay hydrated, a change of clothes, and some other useful things in my small Swiss Army daypack. Immediately upon pulling out of the parking garage I discovered Liberty Square and within it the Fort Sumter National Monument, the South Carolina Aquarium, and some 64
beautiful views of the sunrise coming up over the bay. The square had some great seating areas that were perfect for relaxing with a good book while listening to sounds of fountains and harbor wildlife. There were boat tours one could take and a waterfront area that has a distinctly Charleston flavor. The city of Charleston is rich with sculpture, both classical and modern. The various parks and common areas offer some focal points that both catch the eye and expand the mind with explanitory engravings to help visitors understand the inspiration behind the features. Another thing that Charleston is known for is it’s food. Actually, one of the primary things that had me wanting to visit Charleston was a conversation I had with a new restaurantuer in downtown Statesville, North Carolina. His concept was a low-country diner offering such Charlestonesque delicacies as Shrimp and Grits and muffaletta sandwiches. I was not disappointed at meal time, I assure you of that. Gentleman’s Purpose highly recommends Charleston, SC as a great destination for a week or two. The opportunities to explore a wonderful seaside variation of Southern culture are abundant. You will be well advised to plan ahead of time though. Locating a vacant hotel room with decent accomadations was quite a chore. It seems that Charleston is a sought after destination for spring weddings. With COVID restrictions slowly being lifted, marriages that have been delayed had bridezillas and weary groomsmen chomping at the bit to get hitched in this Southern gem. 65
Health and wellness activities are truly embraced in Charleston. You will find residents enjoying the various bicycle routes, waterfront walking and jogging paths, as well as great parks to explore. The value of active lifestyles are continuing to be embraced more and more. It seems that another benefit of the time we had with COVID in 2020 was a realization of how much better we feel when we regularly engage in these types of activities.
66
67
Charleston boasts a unique style of architecture that celebrates rich Southern heritage and embraces the coastal flavor with abundant palm trees and bright floral landscapes.
68
Charleston has a community of local artists that are regularly expressing the captivating vibes of Charleston so that visitors can take a piece of the local flavor home with them.
69
Downtown Charleston offers a robust shopping experience with a host of restaurants, pubs, boutiques, and galleries.
