The Knight You Always Could Be. Written by Justin Gaynor
As a boy, I had an amazing collection of G.I. Joes. I would cut out the little cards on the back of the packaging that had each character’s stats. What their name was, where they were from, what their skillsets and training included, and so forth. I kept them all in a little file, so I knew which warrior to send into which situation to have the highest probability of a successful mission. Of course, this activity helped to develop in me a respect for the armed forces that exist to do good in the world and to stay the hand of evil. It helped me to understand that there is a very real battle going on between the forces of good and evil. Also, it stirred up a desire in me to be a hero, to go on an adventure, to save the weak and oppressed, and so forth. Here we are years later, and I find myself sometimes feeling like my life is just…average. That is not the way we were meant to live though, is it? We were created for something bigger, something more profound. One thing is for sure, the battle between good and evil still rages on. You can’t turn on the TV and not know that to be a fact. 10
So, where to start? Well, it seems that St. Paul recognized this inward desire men have to be the hero. In his day, the largest most powerful military on the planet that was policing the known world and bringing their way of life to the four corners was the Roman Empire. It was considered highly prestigious to be a Roman citizen, and so much more to be a Roman soldier. To have travelled to the far reaches, conducted military campaigns and brought glory (weight or importance) to your nation was highly lauded. In perfect, very Jewish fashion, St. Paul took this dynamic captive for God’s glory and penned the sixth chapter of the letter he wrote to a small group of Christian’s living in the city of Ephesus. He was inviting this group of Jesus followers to take up spiritual weapons and launch a full-blown assault on the powers of darkness and evil, and he used the imagery of the Roman soldier to do it with characteristic Jewish chutzpah. What is your mission? What spiritual armament do you need to take up in order to further the cause of good in the world? Perhaps it is time to sit down and examine yourself and your world a little, and start to put together a battle plan. 11

Relational Dynamics Written by Justin Gaynor
Group dynamics is a fascinating field. Whether you are looking at an NFL football team or building an IT team, the ways we humans interact with one another and have the potential of such amazing synergy is mind boggling. The human experience and our production and development during that experience is informed by a lot of variables though. Skillsets, passions, attitudes, previous experiences, existing relationships and new ones. Let’s consider ways we can strengthen the various groups that we participate in. Why? Well, let’s just call it actively engaging with God’s promise to “make us a blessing”. First, it is important to know each member of the group. I don’t mean as a casual acquaintance, but rather as a heart-felt friend. What is their personality like? What kind of humor tickles their fancy? What do you like about the way they communicate? What type of education, skills, and value do they add to the group? Do they have any short-comings or weaknesses that either you or another member of the group can help them with? It’s all about helping each person grow into the best version of themselves. As the Scriptures say, “Love builds up.” So, 18
how can we build up each individual we interact with. What words do they need to hear in the moment?
Secondly, based on the gifts and talents of each person, what are the roles and responsibilities of each member and what is the interplay like between all those different roles. I am, of course, hoping that the group has considered why it exists. Perhaps even wrestled with the basic questions “What do we do?” and “Who are we becoming?” and then written a useful mission and vision statement. If not, certainly rewind and start there, those conversations and the finished product will make everything else a whole lot easier. Finally, consider how and when things should be re-evaluated. People and circumstances change. How many marriages have you heard of that fell apart because there was no common mission, vision, and understanding of how everything fits and works together? The goal is to grow together towards greater levels of “oneness”. Those types of conversations need to happen often, and they should be enjoyable, if done wisely and with a good attitude. Isn’t it fascinating to explore how people and relationships grow? It’s like a tapestry being woven together before our very eyes. It’s quite mystical, very challenging at times, and so incredibly awe-inspiring. 19

On a Steel Horse I Ride. Written by Justin Gaynor
There is no question that certain sub-cultures within society have aspects that mark them out, or differentiate them, as a group, or tribe. I recently purchased an Indian Scout 60 motorbike and I am learning about the “Indian” culture. When all the paperwork was completed and I officially took delivery of the bike, loud drums started blaring over the speaker system within the dealer showroom. Then everyone, customers and employees, in the showroom turned their attention to me as my sales associate led me to a large brass bell in the middle of the dealership. Hands were clapping to the beat of the drums and as I rang the big brass bell, the place erupted in triumphant war cries! It was a little overwhelming. It was a sort of right of passage. A big, “Welcome to the ‘Indian’ family.” Now, waiting for the bike to be detailed and gone over by the mechanic one last time, I had an opportunity to explore what being part of this culture was going to look like. Cultures are often unique in their heritage, their story, their style. There were soft, deerskin gloves to protect your hands from the cold, and God forbid, any scrapes in the event of a fall. They had Snap-backs with various forms of the ‘Indian’ logo and name on them. T-shirts and hoodies all proclaiming ‘our’ message: “We are a group of motorcycle enthusiasts. The bikes we ride are from the first American motorcycle company. We are unrivaled in racing dominance, engineering prowess, and have brought to market countless innovations and industry firsts.” Everything about “our” style screams that message like the war cries heard when I rang that bell. What sub-cultures are informing your style these days? How does the message they proclaim fit within and resonate with the overarching message of the Gospel and our identity as those that are, “In Christ.”?

The REAList Written by Justin Gaynor For the last couple issues of Gentleman’s Purpose, I have been sharing about my adventures in real estate. I recently had the opportunity to sit with Justin Falb, my team leader at Keller Williams Realty Florida Partners. Mr. Falb agreed to talk with GP a little about the culture at Keller Williams and their commitment to live their priorities: God, family, and work. Mr. Falb comes to real estate with a rich history in the hospitality industry which serves him and those that he engages with well. As a non-producing broker, Falb probably produces more working through those he sows into than any individual licensed real estate agent ever could. That is what management is after all, getting work done, through others. Without any further ado, let’s get into the meat of the interview. Keller Williams states that their commitment to God is first and foremost in their corporate culture. So, I asked Mr. Falb what that has meant for him and how his faith has shaped his life and career. For Falb it is all about what St. Matthew says in his Gospel, “Whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Way (Torah) and the Prophets (God’s mouth-pieces that spoke His word and teachings). This verse of Scripture is widely known as the “Golden Rule” and has been the backbone of Keller Williams, and many would attribute their success to their commitment to this particular “word of God.” As we know, God’s word is Truth, in its purest sense. Diving into Falb’s family life, I could see his eyes brighten. His daughter is his pride and joy, and though I’ve yet to meet her, I would guess she would consider herself a “daddy’s girl” without hesitation or equivocation. He began to gush as he shared about all her accomplishments and how she is his, “Big Why”, a question Keller Williams challenges all of their partners with. “What is your ‘Big Why’?” Money is a means to an end, a tool to accomplish other things. So why do you do the things you do? Why do you wake up early? Why do you work smarter and with great diligence? Why is it important for you to be successful in the various measures you use to gauge success? For Falb, it’s his daughter.
30
Of course, we know that our love for our children should be in proper order with our love for our spouse, so I inquired further about his relationship with his wife. She is also in real estate, so I wanted to understand how that dynamic works for them. Mr. Falb shared with me about his transition from hospitality management to real estate. That apparently included a season that I think every Christian dad longs for. He had the opportunity to be a “stay-at-home-dad”. WOW!!! Having enjoyed that season myself, albeit under very difficult circumstances and for a shorter period, it was great to hear about another gentleman taking their role as “father” and “dad” seriously. We have so many absent fathers in America and the fallout from it is awful. Time is the only thing we can’t get more of and once it’s spent, it’s spent. Falb will never regret the time he had to fully focus on his daughter in her formative years. As Justin established a strong book of happy clients that were steadily referring new business, he decided to shift to a non-producing role. This happened right around the time that his wife obtained her license to operate in Florida real estate. Falb was able to hand his book of business off to his wife, who he was confident could service his existing client base and their friends and family with the same, if not a higher level of quality and effectiveness. This freed him up to focus on doing what he is most passionate about, and that is developing others so that they can rise to new heights of success. Shifting our conversation to focus specifically on work, again I saw Mr. Falb’s eyes light up. Not only is he leading a flourishing market center for Keller Williams here in Volusia County, but he has also been actively serving the Daytona Beach Board of REALTORS® for some time. Justin shared with me that he didn’t realize all that the board does for about five years. He simply paid his occasional dues to maintain his membership with its MLS benefits and that was about it. When he decided to get involved though, with what seems like characteristic full throttle FORWARD, he REALLY got involved. His activity with the board will be having its culmination in 2023 when he will be stepping into the board’s top role. Something that both humbles and excites him. Justin Falb’s journey to discover his purpose, to fulfill that purpose, and to do so in a balanced, healthy way is exemplary and precisely what we hope to be helping the readers of Gentleman’s Purpose to do with each edition of the eMagazine.

Boston is without question a cultural center. There is very little more telling about a culture than their cuisine. Unfortunately, I was only in Boston for a brief cycling tour as I have really picked up my pace toward my destination for the Gentleman’s Purpose Discover America Tour. I was able to find a suitable parking spot for the Benz right near the harbor and it was only $20 to park for the day. Both tires were in good shape on my Specialized mountain bike, so I was quickly on my way to exploring Boston. When the time came to find a place to enjoy a true Bostonian meal, it was the Boston Irish Pub that was going to be my destination. A quick search on my iPhone and I was able to locate several within a mile of where I was. Awesome! Now you must understand that there was still some fallout in the restaurant business affecting the availability of service. My first choice of Irish pubs didn’t work out due to COVID related issues. I personally think it was divine intervention, because I found ‘The Black Rose’ to be excellent. The signage on the street was nostalgic. The interior had rich, wooden paneling and a bar accented by deep greens and a tasteful selection of artwork, and flags, it was a shining example of the “Irish Pub”. The barmaid was a lovely blonde matriarch with a thick Irish accent and sharp wit. It was easy for me to choose my meal, Fish & Chips with a Guinness was just what this weary traveler needed for lunch. At $24 it was priced a little high compared to what I am used to at The Rock Irish Pub in Lake Worth Beach, FL (a spot I frequent when in SoFlo), but what do you expect, Boston real estate isn’t cheap, and it was quite tasty none the less. All in all, the experience was wonderful. The food was prepared and cooked properly. The entrée included a good-sized portion of fish and the Guinness was poured well. The only thing I regret was not having a few of my mates to enjoy it with me.

Enter Ataraxis Written by Justin Gaynor
The story of how one man was exiled to cubical land for years, only to one day be emancipated and given a tremendous amount of wealth to start a new, fulfilling venture has oft been told by me. That man was my stepdad, long-time friend, and confidante, Ken Pine. He took the windfall and launched a jet-ski rental business next to Hidden Treasure Restaurant in Ponce Inlet, FL. Since recently positioning myself in the area, I have found myself exploring my stepdad’s old stomping ground. Recently, I decided to take a ride on my new Indian Scout 60 motorcycle and search for treasure. It wasn’t long before I found myself chatting it up with Ginger, the newest bartender at Hidden Treasure. The day had been long and I was only stopping in for some of their famous gumbo and an IPA. The treasure that I found was not only Ginger, who is one of the sweetest gals I’ve met in a while, and took really good care of me…but there was a band on stage whose name captivated me. Anyone who knows me knows how much I value mental health and the peace or shalom that Christ has afforded me. The band’s name? The Ataraxis Experience. What the heck does that mean you may ask? I asked the same thing. It seems our vocabulary still has plenty of opportunity to expand. According to the great and wise guru…Vocabulary.com… Ataraxis: the absence of mental stress or anxiety. synonyms: heartsease, peace, peace of mind, peacefulness, repose, serenity. type of: quietness, quietude, tranquility, tranquility. a state of peace and quiet. The band consisted of an acoustic guitarist and a saxophone player. I am a huge fan of mixing big band and unique instruments into smaller, more intimate settings. I love classic rock, and I love jazz. Emmaline…what a babe…anyway, these guys were great. Check them out and if you are in need of some awesome musicians, please connect with them.

Tomahawks and Tune-Ups Justin Gaynor
As you read about in the Style section of this month’s edition of Gentleman’s Purpose, I’ve recently acquired an Indian Scout 60 motorbike. This kind of pastime opens a whole new array of gear for the modern gentleman. Everything from having an extra helmet and a set of ‘sissy bars’ for that Cherokee princess to safely and comfortably ride on the back of your bike, to saddlebags for keeping important items like your registration, tomahawk, and rain gear in stored. In this month’s gear section, we are going to look at what I feel is some important biker gear to acquire. This gear will make sure you are prepared for the open road and that ‘wind therapy’ that we all so enjoy on beautiful, sunny Florida days. 55
Next: A DOT approved helmet

Next: Sissy Bars w/ Backrest & Luggage Rack

Beantown Revisited Written by Justin Gaynor
My younger brother spent a significant amount of time in Boston a few years ago and absolutely loved it. He had already built-up great expectations in my mind, not to mention my old neighbor, Tom Lessing, and many other friends in South Florida hailed from “bean-town”. The harbor and the sailing culture is what caught my attention immediately. I parked my car down by the docks and began my whirlwind tour of Boston. One of the first sites I had an opportunity to explore was the location of the Boston Tea Party. The Boston Tea Party was an act of treason in the minds of some, but an act of justified protest by the founding fathers of America. The battle cry of “No taxation without representation!” had set its focus on tea being imported from England heavy with taxes that citizens in the colonies had no say in determining. That was a bit of a problem. The architecture was the next thing that really caught my attention. There were new, modern designs infusing the landscape with accents of contemporary style, but the historic resonances unique to Boston were unmistakable. Brick roads, brownstones, and sailing vessels. Boston was amazing, I wish I had a couple weeks and a few thousand dollars to explore. Unfortunately, time and budget limitations had started to set in on my little adventure.
66
One of my clients, a major source of income, contacted me to let me know that they were selling the business having maxed out capacity and the sale was closing in thirty days, so this would be my last month servicing their marketing needs. While extremely excited for them and the success of the venture, it was not the best timing as I was thousands of miles from home making it quite difficult to land another account to make up for the lost income. Nevertheless, that was certainly not their problem, or responsibility, and I was confident that God would not have allowed me to be led in this direction without providing in some fashion or other, along with the lesson that while money is uncertain, I can always depend on Him. The rest of my time in Boston was amazing and then I was one the road to my next and final destinations… Keene and Lincoln, New Hampshire.
