LESS IS MORE Written by Justin Gaynor When it comes to achieving great things in life, we often overcomplicate our approach…less is more. I have recently been applying for mortgages, house shopping, trying to figure out what my next move is going to be. Then, I was scrolling through Craig’s List this past weekend and I came across a sailboat. I have owned a couple homes during my life. Rather, the bank owned them, and I was under the obligation of a mortgage. I listen to Dave Ramsey quite often and while he doesn’t yell at people for taking out a mortgage on a primary residence, he still strongly advocates paying cash for everything, including your primary residence. His motto is something like, “live like no one else, so that you can eventually live like no one else.” It takes quite a lot of discipline to do that, but the freedom of having minimal to no debt is amazing. No doubt it is easier said than done though. When I went to look at the boat from Craig’s List, it was nothing like the boats I had been shopping for. It was made by Hunter and is one of their most affordable vessels, priced at around $13k new when they first started producing them in 1992. This used Hunter 23.5 was about an eighth of the cost of the other boats I was looking for, and less than 2% of the price of the houses I was considering. When I arrived at the dock in Port Orange to look at it, while pleased, my first reaction was not what it was when I looked at some of the other boats I had been salivating over. Then, as I was checking it out, I noticed a sign on a neighboring vessel. “Less is more”. That was it, I was convicted and sold, so I made the deal that day and acquired my first sailboat. 10
It seems that life goes in these cycles of accumulating complication and then simplifying. Accumulating complication, and then simplifying. Accumulating debt and eliminating debt. You would think that being aware of this would be tremendously helpful in avoiding the cycle. It isn’t. At least it hasn’t been for me, or anyone I know. However, it seems the older I get, the more times I go through the cycle, the wiser I get. I’m a slow learner at certain things, I guess. In the pages of Scripture, Jesus is often reducing things to their core truth. When he does this, His intention seems to be that the little seed of pure truth will then inform many scenarios and circumstances in life. That way, when we run into something that seems at first glance a complicated matter, that simple truth will guide us in wisely navigating the situation. When asked to teach about prayer, the Teacher gives the clearest most concise prayer one could imagine. He also includes a warning not to complicate prayer, and even points to the reason we tend to complicate things. So that we will be thought more highly of by observers. Complicating things really comes down to a pride issue, so does living beyond your means.

Relationships
16
17
Start Where You Meet Written by Justin Gaynor In the Celtic flavor of Christianity there is an understanding of what they have termed, “thin places”. These are places where it is perceived that the veil between the dimension of heaven and the dimension of earth is thin. St. Paul, in the Scriptures, calls them places of prayer. Of course, there are places where the veil has been all together torn asunder, such as Baptism, Eucharist, and wherever two or more gather in Jesus’ name to render authoritative judgments, binding and loosing. When it comes to relationships between men and women, the same concept is in effect. There are things that we share where we are ‘on the same page’ to such a degree that we experience each other, and the oneness God longs for. I like to call this our common ground. Discovering these places of common ground with other people is amazing. A person could maintain a positive vibe if they set their focus on hunting down and embracing these places of common ground with others. Now, of course, we are going to have many differences, and that is not only ok, but also healthy. However, when we focus on our common ground, something miraculous happens. The love and charity generated in that space overflows and begins to work it’s way into those areas of relational darkness like a glimmer of light. We enjoy our shared space so much that we become increasingly patient with each other in the areas where we are still growing together, and perhaps, have strong opinions that are contrary to one another. There is such a thing as what has been termed “strong fellowship”. I reiterate though, it is the comfort, safety, and love that you experience with one another in the areas of common ground that affords more passionate and heated, but helpful, interaction in the areas of disagreement.
18
You learn to love one another enough to table a difficult issue at times, returning to the common ground to refresh and build one another up. You will, of course, return to the issue later because you are both eager to maintain the unity that the Holy Spirit gives, and that is a unity that does not “agree to disagree” as some say. That just leaves an area of your life together in perpetual division and separation. Our goal is to be of the same mind about things as much as is possible with each of us, so we return to the table again, and again. Perhaps, with a little bread and wine...or coffee.

MEN’S FALL FASHION 2021 Written by Justin Gaynor Well, gentlemen, in Florida we don’t have to put away our board shorts and sandals anytime soon. That’s the good news. However, there are some interesting trends hitting the streets for Fall and Winter of 2021. If I had to sum up what is going on in men’s fashion for this next season, it is a fervent grip on comfort as the fallout from a year of lockdown. As inconvenient as all of the COVID-19 restrictions have been, the vast majority have had a tremendous opportunity to simply chill and relax. A lot more than in the pre-COVID world anyway. Things are getting looser. Men’s slacks are pleated, high round the waist and with straight, loose-fitting legs. Sometimes with a taper, but comfort is key. One thing that I like is the embrace of classic leathers, though also a little oversized in their cut. Is all this because many of us put on the COVID 19…pounds? Just sayin’. Anyway, these leather coats are continuing to play up the Matrix / Goth theme that has been popular for a while now. Oversized and futuristic. It is all very…interesting… A nice wool kilt cut just below the knee will make a great addition to the wardrobe of a guy that enjoys keeping warm while still rolling commando. Not really my style, but if you want to embrace your inner William Wallace, go for it Braveheart! There are plenty of freedoms that need defending these days, that’s for sure. I am also a big fan of the vibrant reds that are being splashed everywhere. From bright red leather jackets to nicely tailored suits in vibrant red. I like it. You will need to be a bold person, and make sure there aren’t any bulls around, but we gingers pull off red fairly well IMHO. Sweater vests and over-sized knitted tops with lots of geometric shapes are bringing the Carlton out in a lot of gents this season as well. Again, not my thing, but go for it if you can pull it off. I am a huge Mr. Roger’s fan…so there’s that. All in all, you will likely still find me in blue jeans and a sport coat on colder days her in Florida. There are some classic styles that are comfortable, timeless, and unchanging.

Freedom To Grow Written by Justin Gaynor
Well, since last month I have made some significant strides in exploring the world of Floridian Real Estate. Let me just tell you that when we get back to the whole CRM thing, you will be thrilled that you stuck with me. My first experience with CRM was going through a ground up development of a system tailored specifically for a financial services company. Going through that process, as I have mentioned before, was painstaking trial and error, lots of meetings and troubleshooting as we marched forward boldly into the future of managing a ridiculously large quantity of relationships, and hopefully doing it well. Yes, quality matters in relationships, but when it comes to competing in the modern marketplace, neither quality nor quantity are negotiable. You must keep both in mind and in balance. Returning to real estate though. At the end of the 63-hour required pre-licensing course there is a comprehensive examination. If you are thinking of getting into real estate, I highly recommend Watson Realty school in Port Orange. It was the least costly, in-person class I could find and was taught by Al Leonard who has been teaching this course for more than 20 years. Prior to real estate, Al was a banker with Barnett Bank, which caused me to immediately put him on a pedestal. Barnett was the bank my family did business with when we owned restaurants and other ventures when I was a kid growing up. Something about old school bankers simply commands respect in my heart and mind. Beyond my own sense of nostalgia and old school values, Al did a fantastic job presenting the material. I hit him with quite a few curveballs during Q&A and he neither shrunk back from engaging the question, nor did he ever pretend to know the answer.. if he didn’t genuinely know the answer, but would find and answer for me. 30
When I was at university, that’s what my accounting teacher taught us, “People aren’t paying you large amounts of money to be a know it all, they are paying you because you know where to go to get the information they need.” He was an older Jewish gent, a retired IRS agent. Mr. Leonard was an Irish Catholic banker. They are both wise and learned gentlemen in my estimation. The point of all this though, is that I passed the end-of-course exam, and then immediately (the next day) passed the state exam and thus obtained my real estate license, with many thanks for the great men God has placed in my life. Once licensed, I had to decide which Real Estate Broker to set my license with. You see, once you obtain a real estate license, you are an agent, but as an agent you have to connect with a licensed broker. I say connect with because you are an independent contractor and not an employee. That means your real estate business is ultimately your business, so you want to come under the umbrella of a real estate agent that is committed to your success. Your success is their success. Let me unpack that a little. When you sell a home and earn a commission, let’s say it’s 3.5% on a $465k home. The commission on that transaction will be $16,275 to you as the buyer’s agent. The broker you are under gets a portion of that for the services they offer you in building and operating your business, let’s say your brokerage has a 70% payout. That means they would get $4,882.50 and the remaining $11,392.50 would be yours. So, as a 1099 independent contractor, you want to select a broker that is going to invest in your success, has excellent brand name recognition, and quite a few other variables that are going to contribute to your ability to grow your real estate business. After evaluating several brokerages, I happily selected Keller Williams Realty. Not that there weren’t a lot of other great firms, but for me, Keller Williams offers everything I could ask for. Not least their commitment to honor God in all that they do. Anyone who knows me and what I have been through during the last seven years related to that aspect of my professional life will appreciate my choice. 31
32
“God, Family, then Work.” It’s right there in their core values. Let’s put some respect on it, gentlemen. From that most vital of starting points, Keller Williams is the number one real estate brokerage on the planet as far as number of agents covered, units sold and more. Everything I need to be ridiculously successful in real estate is being provided to me, the only thing that could really hinder me is the lack of God’s favor and blessing in it, or my choosing to not walk in the Spirit. So far, I have received training in one of the best CRM programs available, been connected with a host of pre-approved vendors that provide everything from SMS texting programs to lead generation to my own personal productivity coach. Never did I think I would find a company that was even close to being on the same level as Scottrade, but honestly Keller Williams is blowing my mind a little…and they are not even paying me to write this BTW… All that being said, I’m still ramping up. I haven’t closed my first deal yet, but I am fully equipped and have the backing to do what I need to do, and to do it with excellence…I am very excited about that.

Many times the food is good, but the stories are better. During my brief exploration of New Haven, Connecticut I discovered some great pizza along with some entertaining dinner company (Read this month’s TRAVEL section of GP). The service at Est. was great, just a couple good Italian guys shooting the breeze with me while they prepared some of the freshest, most delicious za that New Haven has to offer. The prices are reasonable for the level of quality and service. The restaurant was clean and charming...If you are ever in New Haven, perhaps for a lecture at Yale, stop in and give Est*Pizza a try! Life-long Learners Written by Justin Gaynor At Gentleman’s Purpose we encourage our readers to be life-long learners. Whether you sit in and audit a class at a local university, sign up to get your real estate license, or take an Asian cooking class, never stop exploring our world and learning from others. You may say, “Justin, you have no idea how busy I already am.” To which I want to say, choose something that is going to refresh your soul. Something unlike what you always do. Find something that excites the kid in you...maybe it’s becoming a certified scuba diver? That will cost you around $400 for the class and can be completed in a couple weekends. Then you will have an awesome skillset that empowers you to go places and do things you never would have if you didn’t take that first step. Remember, Gentleman’s Purpose is about helping you discover what your purpose is, and helping you fulfill that purpose while keeping your balance in all the various aspects of your life. Now, if you are going to be a life-long learner, you are going to need some gear. In this month’s gear section, I want you to consider gearing up for continued education of some sort. Sure, there is going to be gear specific to the topic you dive into, but there are some things that every gentleman engaged in personal or professional development should have. The items in this month’s GEAR section are just a few things that I feel are extremely important. If you think of anything else that should be on the list, drop us a line on our FB page here: Gentleman’s Purpose Facebook Page

Heaven, Or New Haven? Written by Justin Gaynor After leaving my Uncle Ronnie and Aunt Paula’s house in Maryland, I continued on the Gentleman’s Purpose Discover America Tour to New Haven, Ct. What interested me about New Haven? New Haven is the home of one of the most renowned Ivy League Schools in history. Yale University has been helping to shape some of the noblest minds America has ever played host to since 1718. So, although I tend to pay more attention to the content coming from the Harvard Business Review, I was interested to indulge in some of the rich heritage of the community at Yale. When I arrived to New Haven I was famished. I spent some time walking round town only to find that there were a significant amount of COVID restrictions in place. Unfortunately, this limited access to some of the great museums and libraries they have in the area. They were only opening the doors for shortened hours and only on Friday’s, and I happened to be there mid-week. Back to the food though, I was getting hangry! As I was considering where to get some grub, a man was walking towards me and asked if he could have a dollar. I obliged and continued on my way. I walked a little further, crossed the street, and the man came hollering after me again. “Can I have a dollar”. I said, “Sir, I just gave you a dollar.” He looked me straight in the eye and said,
66
“No you didn’t.” I thought to myself, this guy can’t be all there. “Look sir, I did just give you a dollar. However, I am hungry, and perhaps you are as well. If you would like to join me, I’m going to go to that pizzeria across the street there. You are welcome to join me for a meal, if you like, and it will be my treat.” He agreed and we went to get pizza. That wasn’t the end of the story. While I was inside ordering the pizza the gentleman sat at a table outside. Once the pizza was done, I brought it out and sat with the man. Soon, another gentleman, heavier-set that the other approached and I invited him to sit with us as well. While all this was happening a Caucasian gentleman on a sport bike sat next to us and he seemed to know the second guy. (It’s getting complicated…stick with me). The beggar and the second guy started having a conversation and they both wanted money. So when the second guy asked me for money, I looked at the first beggar and said, “Why don’t you give him some money like I gave you money.” He said, “I need my money.” I responded, “Well, I need my money as well.” The beggar reached into his pocket and pulled out a wad of singles and started looking to see how much he had. When I saw that this guy was bankin’ like that I said, “actually, I think you should give him $2 for the $1 I gave you. I would like a return on my investment. By the way, are we going to eat this pizza?” I guess he thought I was serious, because he huffed and puffed, got up and left the table…didn’t even have any pizza! The Caucasian guy with the sport bike (the two beggars were both African American) asked if he could join us. 67
He took the place of the beggar that walked away. The remaining beggar and I happily shared the pizza while the biker ate his own food and the three of us talked about Jesus a while before we parted ways. After the meal I walked some more and enjoyed all the beautiful architecture. Then it was time to find a place to rest for the evening. I did have a good night’s rest, but I was up super early the next morning. There was a lighthouse and park nearby that I wanted to see before I got on the road to my next destination. I found a Dunkin-Doughnuts and got a good, hot cup of coffee and went exploring. When I found the park, I was one of maybe two or three people up that early. The park was absolutely beautiful, in a classic North-Eastern American nautical sort of way. The lighthouse was gorgeous, there were rolling hills with patches of wildflowers in bloom. It was an amazing morning and the view of the bay was awe-inspiring. This was one of the briefest visits to a town so far in my journey, but it was non-the-less impactful. Now, onward to Boston!
