WHAT A

Style

Men’s fashion, according to Valentino isn’t complicated. But when it comes to pulling off a suit and making it look hot, it’s all about the details, the 70’s are back. Think two-piece suits with thinner ties that are fitted and tapered to the body. The trend now is for suits that have less fabric and fewer buttons. The idea here is that less is more. It’s more of a European look men are going for. “There’s a big movement toward healthy living now, and guys want to show that they look healthy,” Valentino said. “For that, the fitted, proportional suit is what they’re going for. It’s not about the loose, baggy clothing anymore.”If you’re looking for inspiration, the Al Capone look is hot this year, as men are dressing in suits reminiscent of mobsters, with polka-dot ties and sleek, slender looks. When pairing ties with a suit, Eloundou said thinking outside the box is definitely the way to go. It’s OK to mix paisley with polka dots, or wear a different colored jacket that contrasts with the pants, whether they’re solid or patterned. Accessories are a musthave, as they are used to bring out individual style, whether it’s the tie, shirt selection or pocket square. Eloundou’s tip: Be bold. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns. A pocket square doesn’t necessarily have to match the shirt. The contrast shows off your colorful style and individuality.

Sex& Relationships

Oh, the joys of sex and relationships. Some men know what they want from awoman, while others are still trying to discover their boundaries. After surveying agroup of young men, we found out that men like their lady to be a lady on thestreet as well as in the bedroom, while some men prefer a lady in the streets and an uninhibited sex vixen behind closed doors. Physical Attraction The face is always a given when you meet someone, but this year it’s all about a woman’s height and the “ass.” Of course, attraction varies from person to person, but tall women with perfectly shaped derrières out numbered the face and boobs when it comes to physical attraction. Who knew? Relationship Needs Men want self-sufficient, secure and confident women. But just because you’reconfident doesn’t mean you need to be conservative. Men want a woman who knows what she wants and knows how to have a good time. If a guy is givingyou all of his time and attention, then there’s no need for jealousy. Yep, most men vow to cut the cord when a woman is considered to be the “jealous type.” Sexual Wants Nipples, nipples, nipples. Not yours, ladies, the men are all about foreplay, and it’s all about taking care of his nipples. Sucking, licking and even biting on a man’s nipples is a sure-fire way to relax and arouse him. But you don’t have to wait until you’re having sex to play with his nipples. Give his nipples a quick tug after he’s been working out, in the shower or first thing in the morning, and watch his facelight up as if his favorite sports team has just won a game.

A MAN’S DRINK

The Manhattan. Men have been opting for the Manhattan since 1870. History suggests that t drink originated at the Manhattan Club in New York City in the early 1870s. It was invented b Dr. Iain Marshall for a banquet hosted by Jenn Jerome (also known as Lady Randolph Churc Winston Churchill's mother) in honor of the pr dential candidate Samuel J. Tilden. The Manhattan is a popular and classic whiskey a sweet vermouth cocktail. When properly built, Manhattan is the only cocktail that can slug it toe-to-toe with the martini. It's bold and fortifyi yet as relaxing as a deep massage, and gents can’t seem to get enough of them.

Combine the vermouth, bourbon whiskey, and ters with 2 - 3 ice cubes in a mixing glass. Sti gently, don't bruise the spirits and cloud the d Place the cherry in a chilled cocktail glass and strain the whiskey mixture over the cherry. Ru the cut edge of the orange peel over the rim o the glass and twist it over the drink to release oils but don't drop it in. 3/4 oz sweet vermouth 2 1/2 oz bourbon whiskey 1 dash Angostura® bitters 1 maraschino cherry 1 twist orange peel GentlemensGuideLA.com

ummer is here once again, but before you break out your usual outfit of flip-flops and boring shades, check out these fashion trends that are the perfect travel attire for your next vacation getaway.

S

Printed Shirts & Light Colors Individuality is an important factor if you want to leave a lasting impression (You never know who you may meet during your vacation). The most versatile, staple piece to pack is a button-up shirt. Button-up shirts can be worn alone with the sleeves rolled up, unbuttoned, beneath a plain T-shirt, or paired with khaki shorts, for daytime sightseeing. It is a perfect addition, since it stretches your wardrobe, and eliminates the need for multiple articles of clothing and helps to save on packing space. Layer a button-up shirt under a blazer or coat and wear with jeans or another pant of your choice. Because comfort is key, active travelers should purchase shirts in linen, cotton, or crepe material to stay cool. Choose shirts with collars for a dressier feel. During cooler evening hours, when the weather takes a downward turn, pair the shirt with the right jacket to instantly transform your outfit’s look. Wear a lightweight blazer in navy blue for a nautical feel, and avoid thick, weightier materials like leather or denim that will weigh down your outfit.

Make a Splash: Trousers and Shoes

Wearing jeans in the summer can be boring, plus they tend to be plain, and uncomfortable. For a more formal event opt for straight-legged khakis or white slacks. Stay clear of ripped denim or pants that are too short, or made of heavy material. Cargo pants, for instance, visually weigh you down and take away from the overall look. Shorts that fall around the knee are great for long walks and for times when you find yourself without air conditioning. Cooling off by the pool? Swimwear should be fashion-forward too. Swim trunks in bright colors and patterns are good for the beach and for lounging poolside. Great footwear can complete your outfit. It’s imperative to pick a comfortable pair

Summer provides gentleman with the perfect opportunity to show off their individuality and flair. Stay away from dark colors such as heavy grays, brown, and black. Darker colors attract heat and should be reserved for chillier months. Bright colors are perfect for summer wear. Pair bright colored trousers with muted, pale or pastel colors, like light blue or white. Summer is also a great time to wear prints. Even if you’re not headed to a tropical destination, florals are a good option and will add to the casual look and feel of a t-shirt. Small polka dots, thin lines, and geometric shapes offer a new twist on traditional tees, as long as the design is kept to a minimum. Busy designs can overpower your physique. 14 GentlemensGuideLA.com

of shoes. Ditch the cheap flip-flops and touristy athletic sneakers for a pair of timeless, classy penny loafers. Loafers can be worn with both shorts and trousers and will match whatever style you choose to wear. The boat shoe is a second option. It is great for resort-wear, and like the penny loafer, it is easily slipped on and off. A current trend is the cuffed slim pant with slip-on loafers or boat shoes worn without socks. While this style is trendy, it is impractical during hot summer months. A viable alternative is “invisible socks”, but don’t forget the foot and shoe spray!

sunglasses, which are an important way to protect your eyes while heightening fashion sense. Baseball caps are sloppy and will ruin any outfit, but so will sunburn if you don’t wear headgear at all. Pack a wide-brimmed hat. Fedoras are perfect for protecting your face and will shade you in style. Ditch the usual fanny pack or backpack that will automatically identify you as a tourist. Instead, keep all your staples by your side in a fashionable “man’s bag.” Choose a neutral color to match any outfit and make sure it has pockets for holding all your belongings.

Take time to make good use of the If you really must wear sandals, invest in above fashion tips to update your suma pair that goes beyond the basic plastic mer wardrobe and whether you’re headflip-flop. Your feet will thank you! ing on a road trip or lounging around the hottest pool party be ready to make the Must-Have Summer Accessories most out of your summer. n Accessorizing will add distinction to a man's outfit. A Look At the 2016 Lakers’ Season By Bianca Calanche

40 GentlemensGuideLA.com

W

hat’s next for the Lakers? The 2015 NBA season has passed and gone and the city of angels was left empty handed as the Los Angeles Lakers played their worst season yet. With superstar player Kobe Bryant leaving the season early due to a shoulder injury, it is proven that he alone cannot take the Lakers to a championship. So what’s next for the Lakers this coming 2016 NBA season? Three names: D’angelo Russell, Larry Nance Jr. and Anthony Brown. All three took part of the 2015 NBA Draft and the Lakers took them with open arms.

D’angelo Russell- Laker Prodigy

With a number 2 draft pick, the Los Angeles Lakers choose D’angelo Russell, a Freshman Guard from Ohio State to begin rebuilding the Laker Nation. Rusell only 19 years of age has become the most talked about player in the draft and the Lakers were lucky enough to grab him the first chance they got. Rusell started his college début with 16 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds. On January 9, he grabbed career high 14 rebounds in a win against Maryland. On January 21, Russell scored a

career high 33 points in a 69-67 win over Northwestern. On February 8th, in a 79-60 win against Rutgers, he recorded a triple double (23 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists). This was the first triple double recorded by an Ohio State freshman. He had an impressive showing against 7 seed VCU in the NCAA tournament, scoring 28 points and leading his team to the victory, although his season ended shortly after as the Buckeyes fell to Arizona 73-58. He finished 5th in the voting for the John R. Wooden Award. The Lakers fell in love with the star potential and passed on selecting Jahlil Okafor in favor of Rusell. He will likely have a significant role in his rookie season while receiving pointers from Kobe Bryant. The Lakers started Jordan Clarkson at point guard last season, but while the rookie impressed, Russell projects to be a huge upgrade over him. Playing next to Bryant will allow him to ease his way into the league without having to become a first option right away, while his shooting should be able to provide the team with a weapon they were sorely lacking last year. GentlemensGuideLA.com 41

Larry Nance Jr. Will Help The Without an ACL tear as a junior, Nance Jr. might have headed to the draft sooner. With Laker Bench

Larry Nance Jr. was the 27th pick in this year’s draft as he was the number 2 pick for the Lakers. Nance Jr.’s draft stock rose rapidly in the final days leading up to the draft, so much so that he snuck into the first round. He’s a 6’8 power forward who stayed all four years at Wyoming and averaged 16.1 points as a senior. He averaged seven rebounds, shot 51 percent from the floor and even hit a few three-pointers at a 31 percent the arc in the NBA unless he can extend his range.

42 GentlemensGuideLA.com

this team, he will project to be a bench player who can provide energy and backup players like Julius Randle and Jordan Hill.

Lakers expect great results from these fine players, as they are soon to begin their rookie season as part of the greatest franchise.

Anthony BrownThe Lakers’ Three-Pointer Weapon

Anthony Brown of Stanford has been selected by the Los Angeles Lakers with the No. 34 pick of the 2015 NBA Draft. He's the first Stanford player to hear his name called Thursday night. The 6'7 swingman is bringing his sharpshooting game to the NBA after a four-year collegiate career. In his final season in Palo Alto, Brown averaged 15 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 35.5 minutes per game. He shot 43.4 percent from the floor -- including 43.3 percent from behind the arc --and 79.7 percent from the free throw line. He got most of his looks coming off screens, but he does have the ability to create his own shot, although he could struggle to do so immediately in the NBA. In the NIT quarterfinal, Brown lit up Vanderbilt for 26 points and eight rebounds on 9-of-15 shooting and 3– of-6 from deep. Brown will need to improve defensively. With his length, he could certainly develop into a serviceable defender at his position. If his shot converts to the NBA three-point

line, Brown's ability to stretch the floor should outdo his shortcomings on defense. In this player, the Lakers get something they desperately need: three-point shooting. Brown and D'Angelo Russell might already be the two best three-point shooters on the team's roster. After a long collegiate career, Brown is ready to contribute right away. For a team like the Lakers looking to rebuild on the fly, that's an incredibly valuable trait. As for the Lakers’ trades with the Free Agent players roaming around, there is no definitive answer of who will join this team. The Lakers are trying to negotiate to get the best player that fits their needs and can help them achieve another NBA title. But for now the future of this team looks bright with the help of D’angelo Rusell, Larry Nance Jr. and Anthony Brown. Lakers expect great results from these fine players, as they are soon to begin their rookie season as part of the greatest franchise and along iconic players such as their very own teammate Kobe Bryant. n

Aston Martin: Overcome Any Obstacle By Brian Chen

L

uxury cars are a part of every gentleman’s dreams, but they do not come cheap. The expensive pricing holds true for the Aston Martin series of cars. While they are not as lavish as top end luxury cars such as the Bugatti, the Aston Martin models can hold their own in races and are just as ritzy.

A Struggle to Fame The British manufacturer of luxurious sport cars and grand tourers, Aston Martin, has endured for over a century now and is still as popular as ever. Co-founders Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford established the brand way back in 1913. Production was slow in the early years with the outbreak of World War I. Management ran more smoothly after the war’s end, but a turn of events led to the company’s bankruptcy in 1924. Within a year’s span, the enterprise failed and fell into bankruptcy once more. This time the factory closed in 1926 and Lionel Martin left. The company was reborn under a new name, Aston Martin Motors, and was moved to Feltham. It was not until the 1950s and 1960s when the corporation began the production of luxury grand touring and sports cars. The birth of the classic “DB” series of cars helped Aston Martin establish a racing model lineage and paved way for the famous DB5 model in 1963. In 1964, the franchise gained fame when the fictional character James Bond in the film Goldfinger used the model DB5. Financial struggle plagued the enterprise, resulting in the transfer of ownership of Aston Martin several times during the 1970s. During this decade, the V8 Vantage, Volante, and Bulldog were manufactured, in an attempt to modernize the company line. The company continued to struggle, experiencing limited success and eventually became the property of Ford until 2007. 50 GentlemensGuideLA.com

Revitalizing The Company The company’s chief executive, Dr. Bez, helped revive Aston Martin by bringing back to the brand equation exactly what the franchise needed: credibility. By the time Dr. Bez took the reins in 2000, Aston Martin – then the property of Ford – was an empty suit of a company. Its racing heritage was a distant memory; the company’s flagship, the DB7 was incestuously related to the Jaguar XK. The fran-

chise relied almost entirely on its James Bond connection, which was, frankly, a little sad. Driving an Aston Martin doesn’t make you James Bond any more than wearing an Omega Speed master makes you an astronaut.

A financially constrained company, Aston Martin has nothing like the recourses that Porsche or BMW can bring to bear. And yet, under Dr. Bez’s direction, the company’s works team has competed in world endurance racing at the highest levels since 2005. AMR won the GT1 class at Le Mans in 2007 and 2008. From 2009 through 2011, AMR battled Audi and Peugeot in the insane-with-cash Le Mans Prototype category. The Astons have never quite reached the podium in that completion – the Audi and Peugeot diesel prototypes had to stop less often for fuel – but AMR raced heroically. with a newly revised 6.0 liter, naturally aspirated V12. Aston has dubbed this version the dozen – pump the Gen 4 AM29, with remapped engine software, less internal friction and better breathing. Raise the hood and you’ll see, downstream of the throttle bodies, the two magnificent cast magnesium air plenums converging at a black crinkle – finish engine shroud, the breastplate of a British battle robot. Additionally, the Rapide S is full of eccentricities. The central console, for example, is a beautiful baffling chessboard of leaded-crystal switches, aluminum buttons and compass dials controlling God-knows-what. The car’s leather-and-stitch design is quite exquisite. The shoulder - high central tunnel that bisects the cabin, sheer exoticism. The aluminum cabin trim – around the seat belt retractors, the cup holders, and the many Bang & Olufsen loudspeakers – is the perfect complement. In order to achieve Pythagorean perfection, the four door Rapide’s wheelbase is stretched a mere 9.8 inches compares with the DBP’s. Waist-high to a supermodel, and the whole liquid length of the thing hovering on 20inch wheels, the Rapide S is spectacular, shattering, stunning. Overall, while it’s not the quickest car in its class – officially, zero to 60 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds, a max speed of 203 mph, a max power of 411 kW at 6650 rpm, and a max torque of 630 Nm at 5500 rpm – and by no means the most efficient at 14 mpg in the city and 22 mpg, the Rapide S is nonetheless one of the most compelling, satisfying machines you’ll ever sit in. So you know the part of your psyche that wants things? The Rapide S pierces it like an aluminum arrow. Thwock! Damn, that’s a fine looking car and in 25 years it will be a star on the lawns at Villa d’Este and Pebble Beach. n Aston Martin Rapide S

Get the scoop on hottest Gentlemen Clubs in town. Here’s our list, in every part of town. Gents go visit these and find out for yourself which is your best club.

G

1 Cheetahs

If you fancy yourself a bit of a badass, too edgy to succumb to the wiles of your average bottle-blond stripper but not above ogling pretty girls in general, Cheetahs is probably for you. Thanks to the tattooed, punk rock, Suicide Girl vibe of the place, you can feel like you're the sexual equivalent of ecoconscious by not buying into unrealistic standards of beauty, and since the dancers don't get naked, you can also get drunk enough to justify getting a lap dance. Pat yourself on the back and tip your dancer, my friend. • 4600 Hollywood Boulevard, 323-6606733, cheetahsclubhollywood.com.

2 4Play

This venerable L.A. hotspot has appeared on local and national best-of lists, solidifying its place as a favorite among Angelenos after 15 years in business. 4Play offers VIP bottle service as well as limo service and, on Tuesdays, up-and-coming pole dancers vie for cash prizes at its Amateur Beauty Night competition. The club apparently has drawn celebs, as 4Play features a video on its website of someone they claim to be Spencer Pratt. Hankering for brunch and willing to eat strip-club food? 4Play serves dishes such as steak and eggs, as well as pancakes. • 2238 Cotner Blvd., 310-575-0660, 4playclub.com. 58 GentlemensGuideLA.com

Clubs 3

Seventh Veil

Urban legend holds that the neon sign blinking outside the Seventh Veil on Sunset served as the inspiration for the Mötley Crüe song "Girls, Girls, Girls," and history tells us that parts of the music video were filmed there. But if old-timey hair-metal lore isn't enough to entice you to the club, how about this: Two stages. All nude. Skeezy enough that you feel like your dirty mind will be welcome, not so skeezy that you feel like maybe you should towel off the chairs before sitting down. • 7180 W. Sunset Blvd., 323876-4761.

4

Dames & Games

Strip club in Downtown Los Angeles is an elegant upscale Club and has beautiful girls. With Dames & Games, Spearmint Rhino is into food having this topless club and sports bar—in Downtown LA. And to celebrate, they're now offering cheap eats along with their cheap tricks. Though the "one of a kind establishment," according to, isn't an actual topless sports bar, it does offer the best of both worlds under one roof. On one side entertain the topless dames, while the sports bar serves up eats and drinks on the other. What more could you possibly ask for? Perhaps a burger with a price tag under $3? •2319 E Washington Blvd., 323-589.2220, damesngames.net.

5 Fantasy Island

Say you were on a road trip, and you were looking for the weirdest, most Raoul Dukeesque titty bar in town. In such a scenario you would find yourself thrilled to stumble upon 4. Fantasy Island in West L.A. The flashing but worn-down exterior looks like a haunted carnival, and the interior keeps

up the façade with bright house lights, girls dressed in neon sporting menacing neck tattoos, and a lap-dance "room," which is really an open area that has all the privacy of a jailhouse. • 11434 W. Pico Blvd., 310-4735678, fantasyislandclub.com.

6

Sam’s Hofbrau

Sam’s Hofbrau is one of the most reliable strip clubs that serves alcohol in Los Angeles. Sam’s has topless strippers and a full bar. Sam’s is inexpensive and in an industrial neighborhood. Cheap beers and no cover charge make it a really low commitment to just stop by and check it out for a drink . The women at Sam’s range a lot. You have nice looking gals but you also have really tight supermodel bodies as well. Stage shows are mild but can be sexy. Lap dances depend on the girl but are $10 and are done in a bikini with no nudity and with no privacy because you are in the same main room as everyone else. • 1751 E. Olympic Blvd., (213) 623-3989, samshofbrau.com.

7 Candy Cat Too

The Valley is a veritable goldmine of factory-style strip clubs like Déjà Vu and Spearmint Rhino, but sometimes a person just wants a beer and some boobs. For that, there's Candy Cat Too. The little topless bar in Canoga Park has stale pretzels resting on the counter and patrons who all seem to know each other, horsing around like a bunch of high school buddies at their 25th reunion. As for the girls, they're good dancers and low-maintenance. Just don't fuck with them. 6816 Winnetka Ave., 818-999-

9 Crazy Girls

The lights and stage here are like something out of a B movie, but don't expect things to get too blue at Crazy Girls. It's been a bikini bar (no nudity) for years, though the get-ups are teeny-eeeny. All the better to show off the ample ink decorating the rock chicks who shake here. Though it's somewhat divey, it's never actually crazy, dodgy or dangerous. Its heart of Hollywood locale (and live rock nights) attract a less aged-perv type and a more bodacious booze- and sexseeking scenester contingent. • 1433 N. La Brea Ave., 323-969-0055, lacrazygirls.com..

3187, thecandycats.com.

8 Déjà Vu

Complex ranked Noho's Déjà Vu 29th among its list of America's 50 best strip clubs. The club has been around for more than 15 years and offers a bunch of amenities for its customers, including more than 30 dance couches and six VIP booths outfitted for bachelor parties. The warmly lit interior may remind visitors of the '70s, as disco balls hang from the ceiling above plush, red couches on the main floor. • 7350 Coldwater Canyon Ave., 818-982-1199, dejavu.com. GentlemensGuideLA.com 59

10 Rouge Rouge is a strip club that makes you lose all sense of time and place, with five private dance areas and enough seating on the main floor for all of the bachelor parties, ever. The plush red velvet furniture in this Van Nuys strip emporium likely will remind you of opulence, which in turn will remind you of how much money you're putting out on the goddesses of night time nudity, but you should try to quickly forget. • 14626 Raymer Street, 818-786-1822, rougegentlemensclub.com.

11 Spearmint Rhino

The Spearmint Rhino Gentlemen’s Club is in downtown Los Angeles and is one of our top five est strip clubs in Los Angeles. If it’s not to busy, the place is great! it is newer and is better than most of the clubs on the Westside or the South Bay. Spearmint rhino has several other locations abs sister clubs through out. The best time to go is during the week. This club is highly visible from the freeway, is a widely recognized brand, and has been around longer than many of the other clubs you can get excellent treatment here if you want lap dances and if the place is not to busy $10-20 admission sometimes a drink for $5-6 is required and parking after 6pm is $5 and if you don’t user their lot you will probably lose your car to a chop shop. $20 topless $40 nude and something like $300 VIP. • 2020 E. Building Muscle As Anti-aging Regime By Ginny Grimsley

I

f you want good health, a long life and to feel your best well into old age, the No. 1 most important thing you can do is strength-training, says Dr. Brett Osborn, author of “Get Serious, A Neurosurgeon’s Guide to Optimal Health and Fitness,” Dr. Brett Osborn is a New York University-trained, board-certified neurological surgeon with a secondary certification in anti-aging and regenerative medicine, American Bard of Neurological Surgery, American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. He holds a CSCS honorarium from the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Dr. Osborn specializes in scientifically based nutrition and exercise as a means to achieve optimal health and preventing disease.

Benefits of Building Muscle

“Our ability to fight off disease resides in our muscles,” Dr. Osborn says. “The greatest thing you can do for your body is to build muscle.” He cites a large, long-term study of nearly 9,000 men ages 20 to 80. After an early 19 years, the men still alive were those with the most muscular strength. (BMJ, formerly British Medical Journal, 2008). Muscle is all protein – “nothing but good for you,” Dr. Osborn says.

Health Risks without Muscles

Fat, however, is an endocrine organ, meaning it releases hormones and other chemicals. When a person has excess fat, he or she also a disrupted flow of excess biochemicals, which can increase insulin resistance and boost risk factors for stroke and high blood pressure, among other problems. “Increased cytokines, an immune system chemical, for example, are associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease,” Dr. Osborn says. “You’re only as old as your arteries!” Strength training has health benefits for everyone, he adds, regardless of their size. “Some fat is visceral fat – it’s stored around the organs and it’s even more dangerous than the fat you can see,” he says. “People who look thin may actually be carrying around a lot of visceral fat.” So, what’s the workout Dr. Osborn recommends Back to basics,” he says. “These five exercises are the pillars of a solid training regime.”

5 Excercise for a Solid Strength-Building Regime 1 The Squat is a full-body exercise; it’s the basic movement

around which all training should be centered. Heavy squats generate a robust hormonal response as numerous muscular structures are traumatized during the movement (even your biceps). Standing erect with a heavy load on your back and then repeatedly squatting down will stress your body inordinately – in a good way -- forcing it to grow more muscle.

chest, shoulders and triceps; it’s the most popular among weightlifters, and it’s very simple – trainees push the barbell off the lower chest until the arms are straight. This motion stresses not only the entire upper body, but also the lower body, which serves a stabilizing function. This provides a big hormonal response and plenty of bang for your buck.

the shoulders, arm extenders and chest. Lower body musculature is also activated as it counters the downward force of the dumbbell supported by the trainee. From the planted feet into the hands, force is transmitted through the skeletal system, stabilized by numerous muscular structures, most importantly the lower back.

buttocks, lumbar extensors and quadriceps, essentially the large muscles of your backside and the front of your thighs. As power is transferred from the lower body into the bar through the upper body conduit, upper back muscles are also stressed, contrasting with the squat, which is supported by the hands. Deadlifts are considered by some to be the most complete training exercise.

musculature into the body. A pull-up is done when hands gripping over the bar; a chin-up is where hands are gripping under the bar. Nine out of 10 people cannot do this exercise because most simply haven’t put in the effort. It’s also been called a “man’s exercise, which is nonsense,” he says. There are no genderspecific exercises. Women, too, should aspire to enjoy the health benefits entailed with this pillar. “There are no secrets to a strong and healthier body; hard work is required for the body that will remain vital and strong at any age,” Osborn says. “Always practice proper form and safety. Otherwise, the result will be the opposite of your goal, an injury.” www.drbrettosborn.com n GentlemensGuideLA.com 75

Paula Patton: Life After Robin Thicke By Bianca Calanche

A

t a very early age, Paula Maxine Patton found a love for performance and theater, as she would often put on plays in her backyard for friends and family. Born in the city of Angels and growing up across the street from the 20th Century Fox Studios, when Patton entered high school at the Hamilton School for the Performing Arts, she had become increasingly interested in filmmaking. After graduating, she briefly attended the University of California, Berkeley before transferring to the University of Southern California where she studied film. Patton comes from a mixed racial family, her father Charles, was a black defense attorney, and her mother Joyce, a white schoolteacher.

Accomplishments in Her Career Soon after graduating with honors, Patton got her first job as a Production Assistant for PBS and worked on a number of documentaries. In time, however, her desire to appear in front of the camera grew. She was eventually granted that opportunity when she landed a small role in Will Smith’s 2005 romantic comedy, Hitch. In 2006, Patton was chosen for the female lead, a perplexing nightclub singer, in the rap group Outkast’s film Idlewild. The film, a unique and extremely stylized musical, was an underground sensation but it did not achieve much mainstream success. In 2007, Patton was voted one of People’s 100 Most Beautiful People. Her breakthrough role came in 2009 when she por-

trayed the role of Ms. Rain in the award-winning Lee Daniels drama Precious, a performance for which she received an NAACP image Award nomination for the following year. Following the success of Precious, Patton received a number of roles in both television and film. She performed with Queen Latifah in the comedy Just Wright (2010) as well as appearing opposite of Tom Cruise in 2011’s Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Then filming four other movies including 2 Guns and About Last Night.

Getting Hitched Early On At the age of 16, Patton met recording artist Robin Thicke in 1991 at an under-21 hiphop club called Balistyx on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, when Thicke asked her to dance. The couple began dating when Patton was 19 years old, but in the beginning of their relationship they remained secretive, fearful of the scrutiny of their peers because of their different ethnicities. In 2005, Patton married her longtime boyfriend, popsoul sensation Robin Thicke. In April 2010 the couple welcomed their son, Julian Fuego Thicke, into the world. After 21 years of being together and almost nine years of marriage, they announced their separation on February 24, 2014.

Life Without Thicke The divorce was finalized recently on March 20, 2015, and Patton seems to be doing just fine without Thicke. She has upcoming movie projects including Warcraft, based on

the popular video game. Patton is currently filming The Do Over and is set to be part of the pilot of an upcoming TV show called Runner. As her career has taken over her life with a busy schedule, we can conclude that, Patton is enjoying her new life without Thicke. In a recent interview with Meredith Vieira, Patton tells her, “I went from my parents' house to moving in with Robin, and now I'm becoming an adult. I'm really, like, a

real woman now!" She expressed living in a state of gratitude and adjusting to doing things on her own with her 4-year-old son while filming her new movie. With her life story consisting of an interesting turn of events, we can see and agree that Patton is an actress to watch out for; we wish her the best and are excited to see her new upcoming movies! n GentlemensGuideLA.com 81

Five Women You Need to Meet: (But Not Marry) By David Smith

uys, do you ever meet women who you have a fantastic first date with, but then as you get to know her better, you start thinking: “What the heck was I thinking? Well, guaranteed it has happened to the best of you, so this guide will provide insight on which women may seem great at first, but definitely should not be considered marriage material.

G

1. The One Who Never Wanted to Commit--Until She Met You This sounds like the dream girl, right? The gal who proclaimed to all that she'd never 82 GentlemensGuideLA.com

settle down with anyone ever, and then ate her words when you came along? But the problem is that no matter how wowed by you she is now, the moment things become less exciting and less overwhelmingly amazing between the two of you, she is likely to have second thoughts. Maybe you'll sense it happening, in which case you'll probably try harder, and do whatever you can to make sure things don't get less exciting. But that's a basis for a performance, not a marriage. The one you ought to marry will be a person who wants to be in a committed relationship and will work with you to make your marriage strong. You need to meet this

girl, however, so that when you meet the girl you should marry, you will be able to spot the difference.

This is a girl who'll save you when you need to get a table at the hot, new restaurant or a contact at a company to which you're thinking of sending your resume. But be wary. This girl is always chatting on the phone--or sending emails or responding to texts-during dinners, holidays, and all of the times when you long for attention. It makes sense because she's responding to all of those other people who need an “in at that trendy restaurant or after a professional contact. After all, she's got to keep her Rolodex upto-date and that requires constant effort. Her desire to help and sociability are some of her best qualities, mainly as a friend.

a lot about the importance of another quality: open communication. The thing about marriage is that it lasts a very long time. You might be the greatest, most thoughtful, and kind hearted person in the world but I guarantee, you are still going to occasionally piss her off. It's easier for all of us to sit in silence and seethe and think self-righteously that if our partners were better people, they would know why we are mad and wouldn't have to ask. It's a lot harder to say, "I know you didn't mean it, but that joke you made in front of our friends about my slow work habits made me feel lame." Yet, so much of marriage comes down to just those moments--spitting it out, explaining what's wrong, and giving your partner a chance to apologize and do better the next time. Well, what about that brooding girl who punishes you with silence? After a while, you're likely to become so afraid of making her angry and so unsure of what exactly is bothering her that you'll have to tiptoe around her feelings forever, is that what you want the future to hold?

4. The Girl Who is So GoodLooking--or Wealthy or Successful--That All Your Friends Are in Awe Here's my advice: See what it feels like to enter into a room with her. Watch your friends' and acquaintances' eyes widen ever so slightly. Just remember, it can be

hard to separate the feeling of pride and exhilaration that comes from just having won the affection of someone deemed desirable from the more tender feelings that are in the basis of love. Unfortunately, marriage is made up of more than walking into rooms together. Make sure the girl you marry is the girl you most want to stay up late with when it's just the two of you, and ultimately, the one you love being alone with at home.

humanity and more so about yourself. But you can't get romantic with her over the long term. This isn't because of her age--there's nothing wrong with walking down the aisle with someone younger--but because onesided adoration inevitably curdles into resentment. You might not even want to get romantic with her in the short term because she might feel some real feelings and what you might really feel is the flattering reflection of yourself you see in her admiring gaze. By choosing to let her go, you'll have

done the right thing by acting in the best interests of two connected people. This is exactly what's required when you meet the woman you so, so, so need to marry.

This girl not only wants to commit your every utterance to memory but also heartens you with her sweetness and solemn desire to find love. This will help you more than you know, especially on those days when the women you've dated have caused you to question whether they even have feelings. (We all have those days.) This woman will help you to feel optimistic about

With that said, gents, the next time you feel a connection to a special woman you just met, keep these tips in mind when deciding to put a ring on that finger. n
