Men’s fashion, according to Valentino isn’t complicated. But when it comes to pulling off a suit and making it look hot, it’s all about the details, the 70’s are back. Think two-piece suits with thinner ties that are fitted and tapered to the body. The trend now is for suits that have less fabric and fewer buttons. The idea here is that less is more. It’s more of a European look men are going for. “There’s a big movement toward healthy living now, and guys want to show that they look healthy,” Valentino said. “For that, the fitted, proportional suit is what they’re going for. It’s not about the loose, baggy clothing anymore.”If you’re looking for inspiration, the Al Capone look is hot this year, as men are dressing in suits reminiscent of mobsters, with polka-dot ties and sleek, slender looks. When pairing ties with a suit, Eloundou said thinking outside the box is definitely the way to go. It’s OK to mix paisley with polka dots, or wear a different colored jacket that contrasts with the pants, whether they’re solid or patterned. Accessories are a musthave, as they are used to bring out individual style, whether it’s the tie, shirt selection or pocket square. Eloundou’s tip: Be bold. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns. A pocket square doesn’t necessarily have to match the shirt. The contrast shows off your colorful style and individuality.
Sex& Relationships
Oh, the joys of sex and relationships. Some men know what they want from awoman, while others are still trying to discover their boundaries. After surveying agroup of young men, we found out that men like their lady to be a lady on thestreet as well as in the bedroom, while some men prefer a lady in the streets and an uninhibited sex vixen behind closed doors. Physical Attraction The face is always a given when you meet someone, but this year it’s all about a woman’s height and the “ass.” Of course, attraction varies from person to person, but tall women with perfectly shaped derrières out numbered the face and boobs when it comes to physical attraction. Who knew? Relationship Needs Men want self-sufficient, secure and confident women. But just because you’reconfident doesn’t mean you need to be conservative. Men want a woman who knows what she wants and knows how to have a good time. If a guy is givingyou all of his time and attention, then there’s no need for jealousy. Yep, most men vow to cut the cord when a woman is considered to be the “jealous type.” Sexual Wants Nipples, nipples, nipples. Not yours, ladies, the men are all about foreplay, and it’s all about taking care of his nipples. Sucking, licking and even biting on a man’s nipples is a sure-fire way to relax and arouse him. But you don’t have to wait until you’re having sex to play with his nipples. Give his nipples a quick tug after he’s been working out, in the shower or first thing in the morning, and watch his facelight up as if his favorite sports team has just won a game.
A MAN’S DRINK
The Manhattan. Men have been opting for the Manhattan since 1870. History suggests that t drink originated at the Manhattan Club in New York City in the early 1870s. It was invented b Dr. Iain Marshall for a banquet hosted by Jenn Jerome (also known as Lady Randolph Churc Winston Churchill's mother) in honor of the pr dential candidate Samuel J. Tilden. The Manhattan is a popular and classic whiskey a sweet vermouth cocktail. When properly built, Manhattan is the only cocktail that can slug it toe-to-toe with the martini. It's bold and fortifyi yet as relaxing as a deep massage, and gents can’t seem to get enough of them.
Combine the vermouth, bourbon whiskey, and ters with 2 - 3 ice cubes in a mixing glass. Sti gently, don't bruise the spirits and cloud the d Place the cherry in a chilled cocktail glass and strain the whiskey mixture over the cherry. Ru the cut edge of the orange peel over the rim o the glass and twist it over the drink to release oils but don't drop it in. 3/4 oz sweet vermouth 2 1/2 oz bourbon whiskey 1 dash Angostura® bitters 1 maraschino cherry 1 twist orange peel GentlemensGuideLA.com

Your go-to may be a lightweight sports coat paired with khaki pants. Khaki pants are a good choice because they are versatile. Another idea is to try a nice pair of rustic, dark jeans. Just be sure not to wear your pair with ripped holes. Layering is another important skill to have since the temperatures fluctuate rapidly. Try a white or light-colored, tight-fitting button down shirt. Finish the look off with desert boots in a light color. If you think the look is too formal for the event, use your discretion and wear a deconstructed cotton jacket or Harrington coat. Remember, you want to make a good impression so it’s better to be safer than sorry.
Casual If you’re grabbing lunch or heading to a show, you want to opt for an outfit that is functional yet fashionable. It makes no sense to wear a full blown tuxedo, but at the same time you do not want to look like you just rolled out of bed in any old T-shirt. For the laidback gentleman, a suit might be a bit over dressy for your date. Instead, try exchanging your suit jacket for a fitted cardigan and play with separates that will show your bold style. This is an easy, put-together look that anyone can pull off for a classy feel. Since it’s spring and summer, of course, mixing separates in complementary color hues fits perfectly. GentlemensGuideLA.com 13
Fashionable Date If you’ve booked reservations at the hottest restaurant that takes a 3-months advanced notice, you’re going to want to wear something appropriate. Because this is definitely an important night with an important person, dress the part! Wear a suit but skip the traditional suit accessories like a belt and tie. A suit made of gray tweed, khaki cotton, or brown hopsack can be the perfect fabrics to choose from. For a touch of unique flair, add a striped shirt or colored shirt and pair it with brown or taupe loafers. Since it is the spring and summer seasons, patterns are always a good idea.
Just don’t go crazy and decide to show off your intense artistic flair. Choose a simple pattern such as thin stripes or small polka dots. After all, you want your personality to shine first off. Finish the look off with dark brown leather lace up shoes or even a pointed-toe shoe. The possibilities are limitless, but remember that your date will be impressed with your shoes, so don’t skimp out on choosing a fashionable, sturdy pair! Oxford-anything will become your best friend, Oxford pants and shirts especially. 14 GentlemensGuideLA.com
ultimate Formal event So you’re going to a formal event with a date? Lucky you! Don’t forget that dressing accordingly is one of the biggest things that will stand out that night. Sometimes, the formal event might be easier to dress for than a casual event. Your go-to will be a dark indigo or navy suit, a man’s wardrobe staple. Regardless of season, a dark blue color will be classy all year around. Ditch your black suit, as it is way too stiff and boring for the occasion. Pair it with a closed front French cuff white dress shirt to match and a classy black bow tie. If you’re feeling daring, you might even pair the suit with a blue shirt instead. Don’t forget that accessories play a big role in any outfit too. A nice pocket square can add interest to your entire outfit without having to change your entire look. A wristwatch can add that final touch of class that ties your entire outfit together.
It doesn’t matter if you’re headed to see the newest film to hit the box office or will be having a fancy Italian dinner, how you dress is an important aspect that your date will appreciate in the long run. A man who pays attention to the small details like his shoes will demonstrate that they can pay attention to details in a relationships and so on. However, dressing for a date does not have to be stressful. Take these tips into consideration to snag that second and even third date! n GentlemensGuideLA.com 15

Top 10 Breweries in Los Angeles By Bianca Calanche
eer is a man’s best company; at least that’s what it seems like. Now more than ever the brewery community has expanded. More and more Josephine Baker people enjoy the taste of a well-brewed beer rather than a corporate company beer. And with its expansion come the many breweries in every city and every corner. Lucky for you we have put together 10 of the most star rated breweries in the L.A. area.
B
1. Golden Road Brewing It is one of the few breweries in Los Angeles where it welcomes a family and dog friendly environment. Golden Road Brewing has a large variety of brewed beers as well as an appetizing menu. What sets Golden Road apart from other breweries is the great casual and fun environment. There are oversized games of Connect 4, Jenga, etc. and their Aunt Sally court is fun to try after a few brews. They also have a photo booth! Overall GRB is a relaxed and cool brew spot to cash in a few laughs.
2. Angel City Brewery Angel City Brewery is located in Los Angeles, offering great IPA beers; this spot is a casual place to drink a cold one with friends. A lively environment along with the dark, industrial décor, the atmosphere makes you feel like you have been transported to a different era. They offer amazing tasty wings, with a variety of food in their menu. Their most popular crafted beer called Social IPA is a must try. If you’re looking for a night on the town, this is definitely the place to be. 18 GentlemensGuideLA.com
3. Eagle Rock Brewery Located in Los Angeles, the industrial location serves the brewery as a “blink and you miss it” but its well worth it when you find it. Great customer service and welcoming ambiance has all customers coming back for more. Providing great and affordable prices on their beer and food, so be prepared to get a lot for your money.
4. El Segundo Brewery
A comedic décor, with many funny posters and staff, this brewery is located in the city if El Segundo. With a list of there own original beers, many customers enjoy their IPA and Pale Ales. Their casual ambiance brings in an older crowd to enjoy a mature stout. Overall great place to have enjoyable time and make new friends.
5. MacLeond Ale Brewing Co Located in Van Nuys, for anywhere outside of England, this is cask ale heaven. Genuine English beer is their specialty with typically six cask ales on offer at any one time. You can try the Yorkshire Pale, the (English not American style) IPA, the mild and the stout. All are superb and thoroughly correct recreations of their English ancestors. Although they don’t provide food, you can find a food truck outside, but they provide free peanuts. Great place to feel a tad bit British. GentlemensGuideLA.com 19
6. Smog City Brewing Co Located in the city of Torrance, Smog City Brewing Company provides a great selection of beers, from light to dark. Getting a flight of beers will help you find the right one for you but overall a very cool place to hang out. With barrels of beer everywhere, it does good for decoration purposes. Although they don’t serve food they give out free snacks that keep everyone from running out the door from hunger. A very popular place around the neighborhood, you will never find it empty.
7. Absolution Brewing Co Tucked away in one of those office parks in Torrance. This place has a great setup and enjoyable beer. A brewery that tries to play on a certain theme in their décor, Absolution Brewing Company has actual church pews where you can sit and enjoy your beer. The beers that are must tries are the Holy Cow, Milk Stout and the Possessed Porter. Absolutions is a perfect place to obtain a little beer knowledge from their friendly staff and also a satisfying beer.
8. Monkish Brewing Co Located in Torrance, this microbrewery has affordable beer, with an expensive taste. All of their beers have a huge complexity of flavor not found in most brewing companies. They are one the favorite microbreweries in LA – it is worth the visit. The staff is friendly and they know how to describe their beer almost as if it were wine.
20 GentlemensGuideLA.com
9. Ohana Brewing Co Ohana Brewing Company is a tiny place located in downtown Alhambra, off Main and 7th, behind 38 Degrees. It's a taproom where you can sample up to 4 beers, and you can buy most beers using a growler. The staff is friendly and they are always willing to strike up a conversation to make you feel welcome, a favorite brewery in the LA area. Their Saisons are among the best of LA. They know how to do IPAs the right way and their stouts have a lot to offer. Great place to taste a variety of original brews.
10. Congregation Ale House The Alchemist Brewery. Pours a hazy golden orange color. The nose contains citrus fruits, pine and some breadiness. The taste is really well balanced and juicy. A really soft bitterness fades quickly on the dry finish. This particular beer contains Mango, and citrus hops, and Pineapple flavor to it. It has very little malt flavor or aroma. (ABV 8%)

Tokyo Fried Chicken Co.
Tokyo Fried Chicken Co. is located in Monterey Park and here you will enjoy Chef Kouji’s take on fried chicken, with influences from his Japanese heritage. It’s best that you order a dinner set, which comes with fried chicken, a chicken rice that perfectly compliments and a house pickled ginger cabbage to cleanse your pallet between every bite. We recommend the following side dishes, the macaroni and cheese that comes complete with rice crackers on top to create a fusion of a crispy outside and warm and creamy inside and the soy glazed yams that are sweet and savory. Try one of their three signature sauces, spicy ponzu sauce will add a bold heat while the sweet and spicy ponzu starts off sweet and leaves you with a lingering bite. ith a new football team, Los Angeles is planning to build a new stadium to match. The nation’s second-largest city will be branding the “world’s most expensive stadium complex.” With 300 acres in Inglewood, the NFL Rams will enjoy the stadium estimated to be $2.6 billion of 3.1 million-square feet and house over 100,000 people. Twice the size of the Disneyland Resort, the stadium will have a 6,000-seat performance venue, 1.5 million square feet dedicated to retail and office space, 2,500 homes, a 300-room hotel, and 25 acres of parks.
38 GentlemensGuideLA.com
The stadium is designed by HKS, an international architect company, featuring a sail-shaped roof that is double the size of the stadium. The roof will cover the football field, the arts venue, and Champions Plaza in between. A transparent canopy that can also be programmed as a billboard will also cover the stadium. The stadium is located directly under LAX’s flight path and the billboard will serve to promote viewership. In case the Chargers decide to move with the Rams to Los Angeles, the stadium will be able to house both comfortably. Currently, the most expensive stadium is the MetLife Stadium located in East Rutherford, New Jersey. This stadium is home to the New York Giants and New York Jets with an estimated cost of $1.6 billion. The new L.A. stadium costs nearly $1 billion more. In addition, L.A. is notoriously known for the traffic, so what will this stadium do about parking? Developers plan 9,000 on-site parking spaces, including 1,000 spaces underneath the stadium for VIP. 3,000 spaces belong to the Forum and there are 41,000 more parking spaces within a mile and a half. The stadium will be completed in 2019; so eager fans can finally have a new NFL home in Los Angeles. n GentlemensGuideLA.com

the chargers: fighting for la By Jerry Shumway
40 GentlemensGuideLA.com
T
he year is 1960.
The Chargers franchise has just begun its inaugural season in the “City of Angels” before moving to and spending the next 56 years closer to the coast in sunny San Diego, California, home to great surf, craft beer and the team now formerly known as the San Diego Chargers.
The Good News
Now with a move on up that would make George Jefferson proud, the Chargers will be taking their talents from the cool and casual coast of San Diego to the hustle and bustle that is Los Angeles, but the real question is: Where on Earth are they going to play? The answer? Their new $2 billion stadium in Inglewood will be completed by the year 2019 but for the next two seasons
the Chargers’ will be making themselves at home at none other than the StubHub Center in Carson. The StubHub Center was built in 2003 and is located on the California State University, Dominguez Hills campus and is home to Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Galaxy, which seats 27,000 fans and will be expanded to a cool 30,000 for Chargers’ games. Whenever you’re dealt the task of giving bad news to a person, my father always told me to make a good news-bad news-good news sandwich. So we’ll start with a bit of good news. As of March 27, 2017 the Chargers sold all available season tickets for the 2017-2018 season and these season ticket holders now have priority for purchasing season tickets when the Inglewood stadium is completed in 2019. Perhaps it’s due to the idea that Angelenos love to be the first to do something, such as attending GentlemensGuideLA.com 41
the Los Angeles Chargers first season back in Los Angeles, or maybe the season tickets were purchased by the die-hard San Diegans that will travel up the 5 Freeway to Carson to watch their beloved Chargers. Either way, according the Chargers’ president of business operations, A.G. Spanos, in a press release, “The experience for our fans at StubHub Center will be fun and entertaining, and every seat will feel close to the action. This is a unique opportunity to see NFL action in such an intimate setting,” and he went on to shut down critics of the small venue by saying, “The new stadium at Hollywood Park will be a tremendous stage, and we can’t wait to play there, but right now it’s about introducing ourselves and getting to know new fans and partners in a special, one-of-a-kind setting.”

A Blessing in Disguise
Starting to grow on you, right? Well here are some statistics that may put it into perspective. The St. Louis Rams moved to Los Angeles just a year ago and picked up right where they left off by playing at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The Coliseum, home to the USC Trojans, can seat 90,000 fans. The 30,000 seats at the StubHub Center will make it the smallest NFL stadium by about 25,000 seats with the next smallest stadium being home to the Oakland Raiders, which houses about 56,000 fans. Not to mention that even the last-place, 5-11, Chargers of yesteryear averaged over 57,000 tickets sold. The NFL actually has not had a single team average less than 50,000 fans in the last five seasons—so the Chargers are already making
milestones in Los Angeles. Now a couple more comparisons: 102 out of the 130 FBS college football teams have bigger stadiums than the StubHub Center, 47 college football stadiums are at least twice the size of the temporary home of the Chargers and 11 stadiums are three times as big. The alltime record for an American football stadium was set in 2013 by the infamous annual Michigan-Notre Dame game, which housed almost four times as many screaming fans than will be at any Chargers game this upcoming season.
This may be the best thing for a team in a transitioning period though. The Chargers need some time to shake the legacy of the San Diego Chargers and make a name for themselves in Los Angeles. The StubHub Center is easily accessible with plenty of parking—something that cannot be said about the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The intimacy of the StubHub Center will make for a unique experience that will have each individual fan leaving the games on Sundays believing that they had the best seat in the house. n

The Man Every Gentleman Wanted To Be:
Hugh Hefner
A pioneer who dared to put the First Admendment rights to the test.
By Gerardo Biviano Army, Hefner went to The Chicago Art Institute for the summer, and then he enrolled at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Majoring in Psychology, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1949.
Here Comes Playboy Magazine
ugh Marston Hefner was born on April 9, 1926, in Chicago to Grace Caroline and Glenn Lucius. A businessman who launched his own magazine publication, Playboy, in December 1953, where the debut issue featured a littleknown model who would later find success as an actress, Marilyn Monroe. His journalistic talents date to his high school days when Hefner became the president of the student council and founded the school newspaper. He also created a comic book, School Daze, a story about a young boy who was able to be at the center or his own imagined universe. In his late teens, during the end of World War II, Hefner served two years in the U.S Army as a noncombatant. Soon after he was discharged from the

During the early 1950’s, Hefner started working at Esquire magazine’s Chicago branch as a copywriter. After a few years of working at Esquire, Hefner decided not to remain with the publication when he was denied a $5 raise. Determined to start his own publication he took a risk and sought investors who would help him launch his own magazine. With his efforts and determination he was able to raise $8,000. Originally Hefner had decided to name the magazine “Stag Party,” but a colleague suggested he titled his publication “Playboy”. Hefner was fond of the new name because it was a perfect reflection of sophistication and Playboy launched in 1953. Uncertain if the publication was going to be successful, he decided not to date the first issue because he did not know the faith of the magazine and if there were going to be other issues. The first round of Playboys hit newsstands in December 1953. To ensure Playboy’s success, Hefner purchased a nude color photograph of actress Marilyn Monroe, a photo that had been taken some years earlier. Hefner strategically placed it in the centerfold of the magazine in hopes that it would attract interest to the publication, and it did. The first issue quickly sold
GentlemensGuideLA.com 47
more than 50,000 copies, and became an instant sensation. Hefner wanted Playboy to be a distinguished magazine -- different from most magazines at this time whose general audiences were typically outdoorsmen. So, he decided that his magazine would center on the “Playboy Philosophy,” an intellectual magazine about the nature of man and woman plus idea of free enterprise. As well as human sexuality, which is what the pictures of nude women, which ultimately was the real attraction, represented.
More than just a Magazine
Playboy was also surrounded by controversy. In 1963, Hefner was arrested after an issue featured actress Jayne Mansfield. He went to trial for selling obscene literature due to the magazine’s nude photos of the Hollywood star. After a lengthy trial the jury was unable to reach a verdict in the case and the charges against Hefner were dropped. During the 1960s, Hefner embodied the persona of Playboy: a sophisticated man wrapped around a silk jacket holding a pipe.
Hugh Hefner was not only an excellent writer, but he was also an intellectual businessman. With the booming success of Playboy it was time for the Playboy name to branch out and expand its horizons. Hefner decided to use the magazine’s name to create an enterprise, Playboy Enterprise. That would lead to various projects, including the building of hotels and also starting modeling agencies. Playboy industries also invested in multiple media businesses that led to Playboy-owned shows like “Playboy Penthouse” and “Playboy After Dark.”
An Angelino At Heart
In 1978, after many years of neglect, the Hollywood sign started to show signs of deterioration, slowly falling apart. The Chamber of Commerce needed $250,000 to revitalize the sign. That number seemed almost impossible to achieve until Hefner became involved in restoration efforts. Being the extravagant man that he was, he threw a lavish fundraiser to raise the necessary funds for the restoration project. Using his brilliant business skills he decided that it would be a good idea to auction off the letters of the sign, each selling for $27,000, 48 GentlemensGuideLA.com
catching the interest of some well-known buyers like rock star Alice Cooper and actor Gene Autry. Soon enough, the goal was met and the chamber was able to replace the old sign with a new one. Mount Lee Plot was empty for three months until the new letters were completed and placed back to the original spot. Later Hefner came back to save the Hollywood sign once more in 2010, a conservationist group known as The Trust for Public Land was battling to protect the more than 130,000 acres of land from developers, who wanted to build luxurious properties on Mount Lee. The Trust of Public Land was given one last chance and, in order to keep the land, they had to pay $12.5 million. As the deadline approached they were short $1 million, and Hefner decided to donate the final amount needed to protect Mount Lee and the famous Hollywood sign. “It’s become something iconic and represents not only the town but represents Hollywood dreams,” Hefner said. “And I think that’s something worth preserving.” He was honored for his generosity with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Playboy Enterprises released the following statement: “Hugh M. Hefner, the American icon who in 1953 introduced the world to Playboy Magazine and built the company into one of the most recognizable American global brands in history, peacefully passed away today from natural causes at his home, The Playboy Mansion, surrounded by loved ones.” n
Playboy to the End
On September 27, 2017, Hefner passed away at his home, the Playboy Mansion, in Southern California. He was 91 years old. GentlemensGuideLA.com 49

10 Best Exercises
For A Stronger Tighter Body By John Roberts
Y
ou’ve heard the advice: Switch up your routine every four to six weeks to avoid plateaus. But with so many exercises to choose from, this can easily become an exercise in frustration-unless you start with the moves below. Pepper them throughout your workouts, or combine all 10, for the ultimate total-body circuit. Either way, you’ll enjoy the same payoffs: more muscle, fewer injuries, and a body that seems tailormade for slim-fit shirts.
1 Biceps
Dumbbell incline Curl The incline positions your arms behind you, allowing you a greater range of motion that you’d get with a standard curl, says Martin Rooney, founder of Training for Warriors. Do This: Lie on an incline bench and let the weights hang at arm’s length, palms forward. Curl the weights, pause, lower them halfway, pause 5 seconds, and finish lowering. (10 reps)
2 Chest
Neutral-Grip Dumbbell Bench Press “Dumbbells don’t lock in your arms like a barbell, so your stabilizing muscles work harder,” says Joe Dowdell, CEO of Peak Performance. Do This: Lie on a flat bench and hold a pair of dumbbells over your chest, palms facing in. Lower the dumbbells to the sides of your chest. Pause, then press them back up. (10 reps)
3 Core
Half-kneeling Rotational Cable Chop “This exercise trains your core for exactly what it’s designed to do: provide stability and transfer power across multiple planes of motion,” says Dowdell. Do This: Attach a rope to a cable station; kneel on your right knee, your left side facing the machine. Rotate as you pull the rope past your right hip. (10 reps, switch sides, and repeat)
4 Quads
Barbell Front Squat with Heels elevated “Elevating your heels helps keep your torso upright, reducing the chance of a lower-back injury,” says Dowdell. It also increases the load on your quads. Do This: With your heels on weight plates; hold a barbell across the front of your shoulders with your palms facing up. Squat until your thighs are parallel to the floor. (10 reps) 74 GentlemensGuideLA.com
5 Shoulders
Half-Kneeling Single-Arm Bottom-up Kettle Bell Press “Holding the bell upside down builds shoulder stability,” says trainer Greg Robins of Cressey Performance. And single-arm reps torch your core. Do This: Hold a kettle bell in your left hand in front of your shoulder, bottom up. Step forward with your right foot and kneel on your left knee. (Press the bell overhead 10 times. Stand up, switch sides, and repeat)
6 Back
Dumbbell Chest-Supported Row “This is the equal but opposite exercise to the bench press,” says Robins. “You’ll correct muscle imbalances while building incredible back strength.” Do This: Lie facedown on a bench set to its lowest incline. Hold a dumbbell in each hand at arm’s length, palms facing back. Row the weights to your ribs, turning your hands so your palms face in. (10 reps)
7 Triceps
Dumbbell Floor Press While traditionally thought of as a chest exercise, this move also nails the triceps. “It allows for a greater load on the triceps than a press down,” says Robins. It’s also easier on the elbows. Do This: Lie on your back on the floor and hold a pair of dumbbells above your chest with your arms straight, knees bent, and feet flat. Lower the weights until your upper arms touch the floor. (10 reps)
8 Glutes
Barbell Hip Thrust “This activates your glutes better than any other exercise because it keeps them under tension throughout the entire lift,” says Bret Contreras, a trainer based in Phoenix. Do This: Sit on the floor, your upper back against a bench, a padded barbell across your hips. Squeeze your glutes and raise your hips so your body is straight from shoulders to knees. Hold 5 seconds. (10 reps)
9 Hamstrings
Barbell Straight-Leg Deadlift “This exercise teaches the all-important ‘hip hinge,’ which is essential to powerful, safe movement both in the gym and out on the field,” says Contreras. Do This: Grab a barbell and let in hang at arm’s length in front of you. Keeping your knees slightly bent, push your hips back and lower your torso until it’s nearly parallel to the floor. (10 reps)
10 Calves
Standing Dumbbell Single-Leg Calf Raise This can be done anywhere there’s a step of platform. “It helps enhance ankle mobility, which will boost performance in other lower-body exercises,” says Contreras. Do This: Grab a dumbbell and stand on a step or a 25-pound plate. Cross your left foot behind your right ankle, balancing on the ball of your right foot. Raise your right heel. (10 reps, switch sides, and repeat) n GentlemensGuideLA.com 75

Tips on How to Stay Romantic with Your Other Half By Andrea Montoya
en, how would you describe your current relationship? Is it flashy and exciting, or can it be described more as the same scene day after day? If you answered the latter, then it might be time to rearrange the game play. Women love their man’s company, but they adore being romanticized even more.
M
Women are emotional beings and must be treated as so. They are delicate creatures that must be shown that they are cared for and that they are the best thing to have ever happened to you. Show this by being there for her, and listening to her wants and 82 GentlemensGuideLA.com
needs. Don’t worry; we’ve got the tips to keep you covered.
It’s the Little Things that Count
Little things like surprising them with flowers every now and then, goes a long way. It shows them that you care enough to represent their beauty with a nice bouquet of long stem roses (or any flower arrangement that doesn’t burst the bank account). If you know how to cook, grab a cookbook and pick out a fresh recipe to make her dinner. She will highly appreciate the trouble you went through to find a romantic meal for her. Any talent that you have will impress her, so show off your skills.
Surprising ladies with flowers more often goes a long way. Show that you care about her by making her a cup of tea or giving her a nice massage once she gets home from work. If your lucky that might just lead to something more your style. During a movie night, opt to view one of her movies, even if chick flicks aren’t your thing; show her that her needs are just as important as yours. Most men out there are not big talkers. On the other hand, most women are, so be sure to talk to your partner and get to know her on a deeper level. Find out what she likes and dislikes. What are her goals and aspirations? Ask about her childhood, and what she hopes to attain in the future. Women love to share their thoughts and find out more about their man as well, and she will appreciate the effort.
are dates that can cost as little as $10, and as much as $25 for the pair of you. Some affordable, yet amazing ideas, are to start with what she enjoys. If she’s a reader, find an antique bookstore to take her to and pick out some good reads. If she’s more of a competitive spirit, take her to the local mini golf site or the batting cages to hit a few homeruns. If she’s into nature, go on an adventurous day hike and conquer the local trails. Bowling has become a cheap, but affordable option to take your date. If you want something different, find a flea market/thrift store and take your lady to browse,
Change up ‘Date Night’
The dinner and movie date is a nice first couple of evenings, but gets stale even for a woman after a while. Change it up with some exciting new date ideas. Even cheap dates are available if the money isn’t. There GentlemensGuideLA.com 83
and remember those nostalgic products from a different era. There are even free local events offered around the area. Check your local listings, and you may come across free concerts in the park, movies in the park, or Shakespeare in the park. You can take your other half for a romantic stroll down the beach, make a bonfire, and snuggle up while roasting marshmallows. Another creative idea is to stop at a Color Me Mine where you can make artwork together and take home a keepsake afterwards. It can even be as simple as laying a blanket out with some snacks and watching the stars up above while reminiscing together.
Be Spontaneous and Whisk Her Away Even if it’s just to the donut shop down the street, the fact that you want her all to yourself will show her how much she means to you. If you want to be more extravagant, plan a trip for just the two of you. Reserve a hotel room for the night and visit somewhere where there will be plenty of memories to share. Don’t forget to grab a souvenir while you’re there! 84 GentlemensGuideLA.com
Take her somewhere that means a lot to you or that’s from your past. This is a bonding moment between the two of you and she will get a deeper look into who you were before she was lucky enough to enter into your life. Also, it may be embarrassing at first, but spontaneously burst into song and serenade your lucky lady with a song that you both enjoy.
The most important thing to remember is that she wants to spend quality time with you, and as long as she is with you during the date, no matter what or where it is, that is all that counts in her mind.
Show Her You Think She’s Special
mind. More unexpected gestures, such as a wrap-around hug or sneak in a kiss, and she will be smitten all over. Forms of PDA can be acceptable in public, so show her that you’re proud to be on her arm, by holding her hand, or kissing her when she least expects it.
A woman always wants to be shown how special she is. Try doing this by treating her like a queen and compliment her. Daily compliments go a long way, and get specif-

ic. Comment on how nice her outfit looks, how her hair looks so shiny, or even how lovely her eyes shimmer in the sunlight. Try leaving little love notes in her jacket pockets, her purse, or somewhere you know she is bound to look throughout the day. These notes show a more endearing side to you and she will definitely take notice. Technology has come a long way since 1950, and you can utilize this to your advantage. Unexpected text messages or calls can really boost her ego. Just by simply telling her “I miss you” or “I was just thinking about you” shows her that she is on your
beautiful you think she looks, and how lucky you are to have her in your life. Remember gents, if you want your woman to be happy, then prove it by staying romantic with her. All you have to do is to know that it’s the little things that count, make sure to change up the typical ‘date night’, be spontaneous and whisk her away every now and then, and above all, show her that you think she’s special. This will all go a long way for long-lasting happiness for the both of you. n
