Want

WHAT A

Style

Men’s fashion, according to Valentino isn’t complicated. But when it comes to pulling off a suit and making it look hot, it’s all about the details, the 70’s are back. Think two-piece suits with thinner ties that are fitted and tapered to the body. The trend now is for suits that have less fabric and fewer buttons. The idea here is that less is more. It’s more of a European look men are going for. “There’s a big movement toward healthy living now, and guys want to show that they look healthy,” Valentino said. “For that, the fitted, proportional suit is what they’re going for. It’s not about the loose, baggy clothing anymore.”If you’re looking for inspiration, the Al Capone look is hot this year, as men are dressing in suits reminiscent of mobsters, with polka-dot ties and sleek, slender looks. When pairing ties with a suit, Eloundou said thinking outside the box is definitely the way to go. It’s OK to mix paisley with polka dots, or wear a different colored jacket that contrasts with the pants, whether they’re solid or patterned. Accessories are a musthave, as they are used to bring out individual style, whether it’s the tie, shirt selection or pocket square. Eloundou’s tip: Be bold. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns. A pocket square doesn’t necessarily have to match the shirt. The contrast shows off your colorful style and individuality.

Sex& Relationships

Oh, the joys of sex and relationships. Some men know what they want from awoman, while others are still trying to discover their boundaries. After surveying agroup of young men, we found out that men like their lady to be a lady on thestreet as well as in the bedroom, while some men prefer a lady in the streets and an uninhibited sex vixen behind closed doors. Physical Attraction The face is always a given when you meet someone, but this year it’s all about a woman’s height and the “ass.” Of course, attraction varies from person to person, but tall women with perfectly shaped derrières out numbered the face and boobs when it comes to physical attraction. Who knew? Relationship Needs Men want self-sufficient, secure and confident women. But just because you’reconfident doesn’t mean you need to be conservative. Men want a woman who knows what she wants and knows how to have a good time. If a guy is givingyou all of his time and attention, then there’s no need for jealousy. Yep, most men vow to cut the cord when a woman is considered to be the “jealous type.” Sexual Wants Nipples, nipples, nipples. Not yours, ladies, the men are all about foreplay, and it’s all about taking care of his nipples. Sucking, licking and even biting on a man’s nipples is a sure-fire way to relax and arouse him. But you don’t have to wait until you’re having sex to play with his nipples. Give his nipples a quick tug after he’s been working out, in the shower or first thing in the morning, and watch his facelight up as if his favorite sports team has just won a game.

A MAN’S DRINK

The Manhattan. Men have been opting for the Manhattan since 1870. History suggests that t drink originated at the Manhattan Club in New York City in the early 1870s. It was invented b Dr. Iain Marshall for a banquet hosted by Jenn Jerome (also known as Lady Randolph Churc Winston Churchill's mother) in honor of the pr dential candidate Samuel J. Tilden. The Manhattan is a popular and classic whiskey a sweet vermouth cocktail. When properly built, Manhattan is the only cocktail that can slug it toe-to-toe with the martini. It's bold and fortifyi yet as relaxing as a deep massage, and gents can’t seem to get enough of them.

Combine the vermouth, bourbon whiskey, and ters with 2 - 3 ice cubes in a mixing glass. Sti gently, don't bruise the spirits and cloud the d Place the cherry in a chilled cocktail glass and strain the whiskey mixture over the cherry. Ru the cut edge of the orange peel over the rim o the glass and twist it over the drink to release oils but don't drop it in. 3/4 oz sweet vermouth 2 1/2 oz bourbon whiskey 1 dash Angostura® bitters 1 maraschino cherry 1 twist orange peel GentlemensGuideLA.com

The Best Tequilas of 2015: Official Taste Test Results By Gabriella Vigoreaux

rguably one of the greatest holidays of the year is National Tequila Day, and we at Gentlemen’s Guide (GG) saw an opportunity to hold a taste test (for research, of course), to find some of the best tequilas out there. With so much tequila out on the market today what the hell is a Josephine gentlemenBaker to do to find the best tequila?

A

f there is one thing we like here at the Gentlemen’s Guide office, it's great tequila. In fact, our Editor-in-Chief, Jose Huerta keeps a rather expansive selection of artisanal bottles in his office bar at all times. Needless to say, no arms were twisted in conducting this taste test. Under the watchful eye of Socal’s tequila guru, Francisco del Valle, we sipped our way through 21 blanco and reposado tequilas, and we did it all for you.

I

Ever wondered which tequilas are best for making margaritas and which are smooth enough for sipping? Want to know which tequilas taste amazing and cost less than $30? Whether you fancy yourself a tequila snob, are looking for a killer mixer, or just want to get the best bang for your buck, we've got you covered. Read on to see which tequilas reigned supreme.

18 GentlemensGuideLA.com

Method to Our Madness: Our tasters ranked the tequilas on a scale from ‘1 to 5’ in three different categories: aroma, taste, and finish. In addition, the tequilas were also judged according to set criteria such as "Best for the tequila newbie" or "Best for mixology."

Best Sipping Blanco Tequila

Casa Dragones Blanco $75.00 Casa Dragones first came on the market with their premium sipping tequila, Joven, back in 2009. The brand has recently released a second premium spirit, the blanco, made up of 100% pure blue-agave specifically used for mixing. The agave plants are harvested in the Trans-Mexican volcanic belt and distilled with pure spring water resulting in crystal clear tequila with subtle flavors of tropical fruits, cucumber, and mint. This blanco tequila was an all around favorite, consistently rating 4 or 5 in aroma, taste, and finish. One taster thought it had a "fruity wine taste" and another said that it was "muy bien and super sippable!"

Best Blanco Tequila Value

Calle Noble Reposado $21.99 Calle 23 was founded none other by Sophie Decobecq; a French woman with roots in the cognac industry. She fell in love with tequila and moved to Mexico with the determination to start her own brand. Thus, Calle 23 was born. While it may not be a heritage brand like others that we tried, our tasters deemed this blanco tequila as the best bang for your buck, at just shy of $22 a bottle. It was also a favorite in the flavor department, with hints of citrus on the nose and a lingering taste of apples and pears.

GentlemensGuideLA.com 19

Best Reposado Tequila

Aguila Real $69.99 Aguila Real is the newest ultra premium tequila to come to the market from the region of Los Altos in Jalisco, Mexico. Aguila Real's reposado is aged for eight months in aromatic American Oak barrels, giving this amber color tequila a robust bouquet of sweet agave honey and caramel notes accompanied by subtle apple and pear accents. The testers agreed this reposado is smooth and well balanced from start to finish, not to mention the packaging is hand crafted and a collector’s item, with the plated “escudo aguila real” and brass finished bottle cap.

Best Reposado Tequila Value

Tres Agaves Reposado $29.99 Tres Agaves hails from a family-owned boutique distillery in the town of Tequila (yes, that's actually the name of a real town). For over a century, the brand has been preparing tequila the traditional way. The agave is matured for 9 years and the tequila rests in ex-Bourbon barrels for 6 to 9 months where it develops its signature oak and agave flavor. It doesn't get more legit than that, and the low price tag makes it perfect for your next margarita fiesta. This reposado was sweet, smooth, and some even said contained a nutty flavor. Its traditional tequila taste profile would play well in margaritas, with orange liqueurs (we like a Mandarine Napoleon or Combier), or even in a tequila negroni.

Best with Guacamole

ArteNOM Blanco $41.99 Taking the idea of terroir to the next level, ArteNOM is the first tequila company to highlight the individual distilleries themselves where their blancos, reposados, and añejos are produced. The NOM is the 4-digit number that the Mexican government gives to each distillery, and you can see the number on the bottles. Tasters liked the ArteNOM reposado for it's lime scent and described it as "sweet and smooth" and "good for sipping." The hint of caramelized flavor makes it a perfect match for food, especially salty chips with a side of creamy guacamole. 20 GentlemensGuideLA.com

Best For Sophisticated Cocktails

Fortaleza Reposado $53.99 Fortaleza Tequila is made using the 500-year-old Tahona process. First, the agave plants grow for 7 to 8 years before they are cooked in a brick oven. The cores of the plants, called the pi単as, are then crushed with a 2-ton piece of volcanic rock. The resulting juice, called mosto, is fermented for 5 days before being double distilled. What you get is clean, sleek tequila that was a huge hit with our staff. Tasters liked this reposado for its fruity taste and smooth finish. It ranked a perfect 5 in all three categories for several tasters. Vermouth, bitters, and fresh citrus would best accent the flavors of this reposado.

For The Tequila Sipping Newbie

Calle Noble Reposado $39.99 Calle 23 was founded none other by Sophie Decobecq; a French woman with roots in the cognac industry.

For the Tequila Snob

Tequila Ocho Reposado $42.99 Tequila Ocho is the only single-estate vintage tequila on the market. What does that mean? Basically each vintage they produce is different than the one that came before. The reposados get a new vintage every couple of years as the blancos get one every year. Tequila Ocho's reposado was an overall favorite, with many 5's in the taste category. One tester described it as "smooth and light, almost like a wine." This makes sense since the brand's process was actually inspired by wine making. GentlemensGuideLA.com 21

With the opening for third-party developers, apps will be able to run on Apple TV now and apps that had to run on the outdated grid base can now function better on this gadget. However, it won’t have 4K output even though the new iPhone has the ability to record video with this higher resolution. The new app store allows users to add and delete apps according to their own leisure rather than have preprogrammed apps already installed. Perhaps one of the most popular upgrades is the iPhone. The new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S are now available in a rose gold color. The phone features an A9 chip, 3D Touch, and a 12 MP iSight camera. The display size remains the same as the iPhone 6 and the dimensions are about the same with slight minor changes. The weight only increases by a fraction. The new camera is more advanced and can now take 4K video which is up to four times the resolution of 1080p HD video, 12 megapixel rear camera and 5 megapixel front facing camera. In addition, a new feature known as Live Photos capture the moments before and after you capture the picture and allows you to “view” it in motion. The new A9 chip has 70% faster CPU performance and 90% faster GPU performance. A step up from the original Multi-Touch, with the new 3D Touch users can have a variety of performance options. 3D Touch lets the user sense how deeply the display is pressed such as the Peek and Pop feature, which allows for previewing of content such as email, links, or photos without opening them.

The new A9 chip has 70% faster CPu performance and 90% faster GPu performance. A step up from the original Multi-Touch, with the new 3D Touch users can have a variety of performance options.

A Touch of Sophistication with iPad Pro

In addition to the line of iPhones, the iPads are also getting their newest addition: the iPad Pro. This thin, light model is bigger than ever at a whopping 12.9-inch retina display. In addition, there are four new high-fidelity speakers built in with engaging sound that’s three times the acoustic output of the iPad Air. Touch ID technology ensures that your iPad is protected and secure. Like the iPhone, the iPad Pro camera features new advanced sensors for breathtaking images at 720p HD video and A9X chip for faster performance. To go along with the new iPad, Apple has introduced their Apple Pencil. This invention is a $99 US stylus, which can benefit artists, doctors, and those who

need digital clipboards is aiming at mimicking the effects of a real pencil on paper. Apple has also launched a new keyboard cover to go along with the larger iPad, which connects magnetically. While there are improvements to the new devices, some critics wonder if these little fixes will entice consumers enough to upgrade from their old devices. However, Apple seems to be making strides in the tech world with constant improvements, which can only better their current products. n

VidCon 2015: The Changing Scope of Internet Entertainment By Bonnie Wong

W

ith over 300 of the most influential YouTubers present, the 6th annual VidCon, hosted at the Anaheim Convention Center, garnered over 20,000 attendees. This event featured panels, guest speakers, workshops, and events tailored for the internet-savvy, social seekers of the 21st century. Co-founded by brothers Hank and John Green, VidCon is held annually in Southern California since 2010. It is a multi-genre, online and video-inspired conference for many dedicated individuals.

GentlemensGuideLA.com 37

A Community of Online Enthusiasts

On July 23rd-25th, 2015, major creators of online video such as vine stars, Bernie Su, Meredith Foster, and Blair Fowler were seen at the event, just to name a few. This event featured floor one dedicated to “Community” passes—for the everyday fans seeking to meet just some of their favorite YouTube stars complete with discussions, concerts, interviews, an expo hall, parties, meet-ups, movie night, and even VidCon prom at a standard price of $150. The second floor was for “Creators” who are YouTubers looking to grow and expand their presence on the internet, break into the industry, produce better content, and meet their fellow counterparts through panels, networking, and workshops for a standard price of $200. The last floor for “Industry” was made for attendees who work in the video industry such as production companies, network, channel, talent management, software development, venture investment, and more at $600 a pass. The Community Track was the largest of the three. Although the tickets were a hefty investment, sales were sold out almost immediately, further demonstrating a market that is rapidly growing. With a new option for a Signing Raffle, fans had the opportunity to meet with their favorite YouTube stars in a more efficient way through wristbands in an attempt to let more people meet.

The Event for Producers, YouTubers, and Fans

Many companies and sponsors attended the event. For example, Canon brought its camera products and gave away tote bags and gear to filmmakers to showcase their latest technology, whether recipients were amateur “vloggers” or full-fledged big time producers. Universal Pictures held a makeup station booth to showcase its upcoming movie “Jem and the Holograms.” Universal also screened the newest horror thriller “The Visit” which isn’t set to be released on the big screen until September. NBC had a stage featuring two televisions shows and a digital series. “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon”

38 GentlemensGuideLA.com

held a slapjack booth where losers of the game would be slapped with a hand-shaped pillow and recorded in slow motion. With just a few of these widely different attractions as the forefront of examples, VidCon was a success for producers, videographers, stars, fans, and the public alike celebrating the medium of online video mixed with the changing scope of the network as a whole.

Online Video Entertainment’s Impact

Aside from the fangirls (and boys) that VidCon was once about, the event gave way to a deeper meaning of Internet entertainment. With the internet growing rapidly and social media connecting people in ways like never before, it’s no surprise that online video has gathered so many people around a computer screen. “It could be as simple as entertainment, but the diversity that new media celebrates truly allows that connection to be more than that, shedding light on topics that really stir emotions and help people relate in ways that aren’t traditionally available on TV,” said Andy Smith, writer for Reelseo, the Video Marketer’s Guide. Entertainment is predicted to undergo major changes in the future as viewers are shifting from solely television to online forms nowadays. It’s expected that these mediums can both operate hand in hand. “I think we have to sort of break ourselves from the notion that it’s about a writer and editor on editorial. [Online creators] could bring in a different talent, a different voice and a completely different energy. They’re not meant to fill roles, but we have a new paradigm now,” said Will Lee, editorial direct of People.com and EW.com. With such a large amount of attendees all enthusiastic and dedicated to be a part of the bigger picture, it’s hard to say that VidCon 2015 wasn’t a success. On a deeper level, this event stands for so much more and the people present are just part of a much bigger, worldwide community of passionate and eager web entertainers, actors, actresses, producers, and more. n

Will The NFL Be Back in So Cal? By Bonnie Wong

40 GentlemensGuideLA.com

I

f the rumors are true—football is coming to Southern California! L.A. hasn’t had a professional football team since the year 1995 after the Raiders and the Rams moved away, leaving the city without a team. For the time, the city has had to rely on college football teams such as USC and UCLA for football. However, the NFL should have a team in L.A. by 2016 and a place for a team to call home and return once again.

New Stadiums, New Promises

A few months ago, the St. Louis Rams’ owner Stan Kroenke purchased land in Inglewood, moving forward with plans of building a stadium there. There are grand plans in store for this stadium as part of a 300-acre development of homes, parks, and office space costing about $1.86 billion total. Similarly, the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers are building a stadium together in Carson on a 168-acre site, edged by a freeway. As mayor of Carson Albert Robles said, “There are two things that are needed here in Southern California. One of them is rain…the other is football.” Because Los

Angeles has such a huge concentration of people in one city, bringing their very own team to L.A. would mean tons of potential coverage for the teams and league, encouraging ticket sales, merchandise, and sponsorships. In fact, Los Angeles is the second largest market in the nation and would be a great place to bring football back to. In addition, a football team could mean further helping the N.F.L.’s media rights. On the flip side, there is no guarantee that a large fan base will grow in Los Angeles as compared to the already-established markets in Oakland, St. Louis, or San Diego.

Opposition and Potential Problems

It is necessary that the owners must decide how many can move to L.A. as early as the next season because 1-2 teams would be sustainable but tackling a 3rd would be too many. It is speculated that therefore, it would be best to move the two teams, the Chargers and the Raiders, to one stadium to boost the market and help in the franchise. On the other hand, it is believed that the preexisting fan groups of the area would be GentlemensGuideLA.com 41

lost if the teams move to Los Angeles, including much-needed sponsors. This is one of the fears that owners and teams are worried for about the move. Opposition to the team’s move has been growing as well. Under the league bylaws, the move needs approval from at least three-quarters of the owners with consideration taken of public financial support, condition of team’s current stadium, and willingness of the stadium or community to fix deficiencies in the stadium or if needed, to replace the establishment. Furthermore,

42 GentlemensGuideLA.com

owners need to factor in traffic issues, which may arise and delay games as well as eager fans traveling to watch the sports.

Under the league bylaws, the move needs approval from at least three-quarters of the owners with consideration taken of public financial support.

The Fight Of The Hometowns

In an attempt to keep the Chargers in San Diego, San Diego’s mayor created an assembly, which recommended a stadium to be built next to the Chargers’ current home in Mission Valley. In addition, the mayor Kevin L. Faulconer helped speed up an environmental review so that a public vote would be pushed closer to January. However, the Chargers walked out of discussions in June, saying that they did not have enough time to wait for potential stadiums to be approved. Since 2003, the Chargers have lobbied for a new stadium, but many circumstantial occurrences have prevented the building of any such establishment.

Although moving a team will result in loss for their hometown and more, there is much opportunity for success in the city of Angels. With this exciting change, fans can expect to see a comeback in the N.F.L. sports world for Southern California. n

In St. Louis, civic leaders alongside Governor Jay Nixon of Missouri are working on a plan to build a $998 million stadium in downtown near the heart of the Mississippi River. Unlike the Chargers, the Rams’ officers have attended the planning meetings. There is always the constant threat of the N.F.L. being pulled into a lawsuit, which is a risk for the teams’ owners as well and also a big consideration. GentlemensGuideLA.com 43 43

G

1 Cheetahs

If you fancy yourself a bit of a badass, too edgy to succumb to the wiles of your average bottle-blond stripper but not above ogling pretty girls in general, Cheetahs is probably for you. Thanks to the tattooed, punk rock, Suicide Girl vibe of the place, you can feel like you're the sexual equivalent of ecoconscious by not buying into unrealistic standards of beauty, and since the dancers don't get naked, you can also get drunk enough to justify getting a lap dance. Pat yourself on the back and tip your dancer, my friend. • 4600 Hollywood Boulevard, 323-6606733, cheetahsclubhollywood.com.

2 4Play

This venerable L.A. hotspot has appeared on local and national best-of lists, solidifying its place as a favorite among Angelenos after 15 years in business. 4Play offers VIP bottle service as well as limo service and, on Tuesdays, up-and-coming pole dancers vie for cash prizes at its Amateur Beauty Night competition. The club apparently has drawn celebs, as 4Play features a video on its website of someone they claim to be Spencer Pratt. Hankering for brunch and willing to eat strip-club food? 4Play serves dishes such as steak and eggs, as well as pancakes. • 2238 Cotner Blvd., 310-575-0660, 4playclub.com. 58 GentlemensGuideLA.com

Clubs 3

Seventh Veil

Urban legend holds that the neon sign blinking outside the Seventh Veil on Sunset served as the inspiration for the Mötley Crüe song "Girls, Girls, Girls," and history tells us that parts of the music video were filmed there. But if old-timey hair-metal lore isn't enough to entice you to the club, how about this: Two stages. All nude. Skeezy enough that you feel like your dirty mind will be welcome, not so skeezy that you feel like maybe you should towel off the chairs before sitting down. • 7180 W. Sunset Blvd., 323876-4761.

4

Dames & Games

Strip club in Downtown Los Angeles is an elegant upscale Club and has beautiful girls. With Dames & Games, Spearmint Rhino is into food having this topless club and sports bar—in Downtown LA. And to celebrate, they're now offering cheap eats along with their cheap tricks. Though the "one of a kind establishment," according to, isn't an actual topless sports bar, it does offer the best of both worlds under one roof. On one side entertain the topless dames, while the sports bar serves up eats and drinks on the other. What more could you possibly ask for? Perhaps a burger with a price tag under $3? •2319 E Washington Blvd., 323-589.2220, damesngames.net.

5 Fantasy Island

Say you were on a road trip, and you were looking for the weirdest, most Raoul Dukeesque titty bar in town. In such a scenario you would find yourself thrilled to stumble upon 4. Fantasy Island in West L.A. The flashing but worn-down exterior looks like a haunted carnival, and the interior keeps

up the façade with bright house lights, girls dressed in neon sporting menacing neck tattoos, and a lap-dance "room," which is really an open area that has all the privacy of a jailhouse. • 11434 W. Pico Blvd., 310-4735678, fantasyislandclub.com.

6

Sam’s Hofbrau

Sam’s Hofbrau is one of the most reliable strip clubs that serves alcohol in Los Angeles. Sam’s has topless strippers and a full bar. Sam’s is inexpensive and in an industrial neighborhood. Cheap beers and no cover charge make it a really low commitment to just stop by and check it out for a drink . The women at Sam’s range a lot. You have nice looking gals but you also have really tight supermodel bodies as well. Stage shows are mild but can be sexy. Lap dances depend on the girl but are $10 and are done in a bikini with no nudity and with no privacy because you are in the same main room as everyone else. • 1751 E. Olympic Blvd., (213) 623-3989, samshofbrau.com.

7 Candy Cat Too

The Valley is a veritable goldmine of factory-style strip clubs like Déjà Vu and Spearmint Rhino, but sometimes a person just wants a beer and some boobs. For that, there's Candy Cat Too. The little topless bar in Canoga Park has stale pretzels resting on the counter and patrons who all seem to know each other, horsing around like a bunch of high school buddies at their 25th reunion. As for the girls, they're good dancers and low-maintenance. Just don't fuck with them. 6816 Winnetka Ave., 818-999-

9 Crazy Girls

The lights and stage here are like something out of a B movie, but don't expect things to get too blue at Crazy Girls. It's been a bikini bar (no nudity) for years, though the get-ups are teeny-eeeny. All the better to show off the ample ink decorating the rock chicks who shake here. Though it's somewhat divey, it's never actually crazy, dodgy or dangerous. Its heart of Hollywood locale (and live rock nights) attract a less aged-perv type and a more bodacious booze- and sexseeking scenester contingent. • 1433 N. La Brea Ave., 323-969-0055, lacrazygirls.com..

3187, thecandycats.com.

8 Déjà Vu

Complex ranked Noho's Déjà Vu 29th among its list of America's 50 best strip clubs. The club has been around for more than 15 years and offers a bunch of amenities for its customers, including more than 30 dance couches and six VIP booths outfitted for bachelor parties. The warmly lit interior may remind visitors of the '70s, as disco balls hang from the ceiling above plush, red couches on the main floor. • 7350 Coldwater Canyon Ave., 818-982-1199, dejavu.com. GentlemensGuideLA.com 59

10 Rouge Rouge is a strip club that makes you lose all sense of time and place, with five private dance areas and enough seating on the main floor for all of the bachelor parties, ever. The plush red velvet furniture in this Van Nuys strip emporium likely will remind you of opulence, which in turn will remind you of how much money you're putting out on the goddesses of night time nudity, but you should try to quickly forget. • 14626 Raymer Street, 818-786-1822, rougegentlemensclub.com.

7 Tips On Obtaining Killer Abs

All men want them and all women look for them! By John Roberts

B

uilding abs is a lot like building wealth. The experts say slow and steady is the key, your dividends pay off after months of hard work. They’re right: A lifetime of good habits leads to long-term weight loss. Sometimes, however, you just can’t wait. The sun is shining, the beach is calling, and you’ve realized you haven’t exercised all season.

Realizing you need to lose that belly—NOW!

Here’s how to make that happen: Test panelists on the Zero Belly Diet, the latest New York Times bestseller from Abs Diet creator David Zinczenko, lost up to 16 pounds in 14 days—specifically from their mid-section area, resulting in a now-tight-and-toned middle. Adopt these 7 essential eating strategies to keep your body guessing and your abs growing well in time for beach season.

7 Don’t Slack on Snacks Are you proud you never snack between meals? Sadly, that very ascetic approach to eating may be why you can’t lose weight. Most people consume the bulk of their calories in two or three large meals each day, often in an attempt to slim down, and go hours at a time without eating anything in between. The problem: When your snacking is lacking, so is your body’s ability to burn fat. A nutritious meal or a healthy snack about every three hours keeps blood sugar levels stable, feeds your body a steady stream of necessary nutrients and helps control hunger-induced cravings for sweets and fats, the key to long-term Ab-itude. Do This Now: Make your meals mini and spread them out. If you have trouble fitting in extra eating times at work, prepare food ahead of time that you can zap in the microwave or eat cold. 6

Don’t Play the Hunger Game Remember this: every time you feel hungry, your abs are being covered with fat. Let us repeat that: every time you feel hungry, your abs are being covered with fat. Hunger means that your body is running low on nutrients, and it’s beginning to break down stored muscle for 74 GentlemensGuideLA.com

energy. Hunger pangs are your body’s last-ditch efforts to convince you to eat. So eat! Do This Now: Stay ahead of the curve by eating before your stomach starts growling. If you’re pressed for time, consider the following: A meal can consist of a fourounce chicken breast, a small baked potato and a salad, all of which can be made the night before and require minimal preparation time. Or try the super-effective, ab-defining “75/25” rule and learn.

5 Eat for Your Ideal Weight

Here’s a cool Zero Belly trick: Ask yourself, “How much do I want to weigh?” Then take that ideal weight, multiply it by 0.8, and boom: you know how much protein to eat daily. For example, if your ideal weight is 170 pounds, your daily protein requirement would be 136 grams. Let’s say you eat 5 times a day—well, that’s about 27 grams of protein per meal. That’s what you’ll get from about one small can of water-packed tuna or four slices of turkey breast deli meat. Lunch, done. Do This Now: While eating anything raises your metabolic rate, protein boosts it the most, and is essential to building fat-frying muscle. Eat chicken, turkey, beef, egg whites and cottage cheese—all high-rev foods.

4.4 Diversify Your Carbs Modern diet gurus have made carbs seem so scary, it’s no wonder the health-conscious among us are afraid to venture too far from the quinoa. But new research shows that your fatburning system actually operates better when you keep it guessing, so don’t let yourself get caught in a rut. Eating a variety of carbs, even some simple sugars, is desirable for athletes, according to the journal Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning. Keep in mind, that’s not an invitation to gorge on sugary cereals or candy bars. Do This Now: Foods like potatoes, brown rice, pasta and vegetables should make up the bulk of your carbs. As a rule, you shouldn’t eat more than two or three grams of carbs per pound of body weight. For the full list of what to eat for rapid weight loss, check out our essential.

3 Eat “Wet” Carbs at Night What’s a “wet” carb? We’re talking carbs that have high amounts of water in them, such as cucumbers, leafy green salads, tomatoes and steamed asparagus. Avoid “dry” carbs like pasta and bread. The reason: High-fiber, lowwater foods leach water out of your system; wet carbs, on the other hand, allow you to maintain relatively adequate levels of water during the night since you can’t drink while you sleep. Staying hydrated overnight means your body will continue to get the nourishment it needs to unveil your abs even while you’re dreaming of a faraway beach. Do This Now: Also get in the habit of eating fish as part of your last meal of the day. Fish makes for a lighter meal, and it’s a good way to replenish your protein stores while getting essential fatty acids. The American Heart Association recommends at least two servings of fatty fish (such as salmon and tuna) per week.

2 Make a Muscle Mix Your first meal when you wake up and the first meal you have after working out should contain your largest carb intakes of the day. Your body’s glycogen stores are depleted when you wake up; replenishing them quickly is crucial to physical and mental functioning. A serious workout session depletes glycogen stores as well. Do This Now: Consume a mix of simple and complex carbs along with a protein within 60 minutes after a workout to restore your energy and ensure long-term muscle recovery. 1 Develop a Drinking Habit When you eat carbs, they get turned into one of two things: energy, or fat. That’s all the options your body has. But here’s something you might not know: If you’re not drinking ample water, your body may have to store carbs as fat. You body cannot efficiently change carbs into energy without ample water. And, according to the Journal Physiology of Sport and Exercise, you can’t deliver essential amino acids to muscle tissue without adequate water, either. Not only will your workout sessions suffer, but insufficient liquids in your body will also hinder fat breakdown. Do This Now: Don’t wait until you’re thirsty— thirst signals the first stage of dehydration, which means you’re already too late, and your body has entered fat-storage mode. Try to get at least 10 cups of water per day, although up to a gallon is okay. If you want to be in better shape and have great abs, these prudent habits will get you there, but you must strictly follow the regimen. Remember, gent’s you can’t talk the talk without walking the walk. n

Advice

Five Women You Need to Meet: (But Not Marry) By David Smith

uys, do you ever meet women who you have a fantastic first date with, but then as you get to know her better, you start thinking: “What the heck was I thinking? Well, guaranteed it has happened to the best of you, so this guide will provide insight on which women may seem great at first, but definitely should not be considered marriage material.

G

1. The One Who Never Wanted to Commit--Until She Met You This sounds like the dream girl, right? The gal who proclaimed to all that she'd never 82 GentlemensGuideLA.com

settle down with anyone ever, and then ate her words when you came along? But the problem is that no matter how wowed by you she is now, the moment things become less exciting and less overwhelmingly amazing between the two of you, she is likely to have second thoughts. Maybe you'll sense it happening, in which case you'll probably try harder, and do whatever you can to make sure things don't get less exciting. But that's a basis for a performance, not a marriage. The one you ought to marry will be a person who wants to be in a committed relationship and will work with you to make your marriage strong. You need to meet this

No matter how wowed by you she is now, the moment things become less exciting and less overwhelmingly amazing between the two of you, she is likely to have second thoughts.

3. The Funny, Charming, Sensitive Girl Who Pouts and Says "Nothing" When You Ask 2. The Girl Who Knows Everyone, Her If Something's Wrong She's got so many wonderful qualities. So I Mean, Everyone, In Town

girl, however, so that when you meet the girl you should marry, you will be able to spot the difference.

This is a girl who'll save you when you need to get a table at the hot, new restaurant or a contact at a company to which you're thinking of sending your resume. But be wary. This girl is always chatting on the phone--or sending emails or responding to texts-during dinners, holidays, and all of the times when you long for attention. It makes sense because she's responding to all of those other people who need an “in at that trendy restaurant or after a professional contact. After all, she's got to keep her Rolodex upto-date and that requires constant effort. Her desire to help and sociability are some of her best qualities, mainly as a friend.

please, date her-- only because you'll learn

GentlemensGuideLA.com 83

a lot about the importance of another quality: open communication. The thing about marriage is that it lasts a very long time. You might be the greatest, most thoughtful, and kind hearted person in the world but I guarantee, you are still going to occasionally piss her off. It's easier for all of us to sit in silence and seethe and think self-righteously that if our partners were better people, they would know why we are mad and wouldn't have to ask. It's a lot harder to say, "I know you didn't mean it, but that joke you made in front of our friends about my slow work habits made me feel lame." Yet, so much of marriage comes down to just those moments--spitting it out, explaining what's wrong, and giving your partner a chance to apologize and do better the next time. Well, what about that brooding girl who punishes you with silence? After a while, you're likely to become so afraid of making her angry and so unsure of what exactly is bothering her that you'll have to tiptoe around her feelings forever, is that what you want the future to hold?

4. The Girl Who Is So GoodLooking--or Wealthy or Successful--That All Your Friends Are in Awe Here's my advice: See what it feels like to enter into a room with her. Watch your friends' and acquaintances' eyes widen ever so slightly. Just remember, it can be

hard to separate the feeling of pride and exhilaration that comes from just having won the affection of someone deemed desirable from the more tender feelings that are in the basis of love. Unfortunately, marriage is made up of more than walking into rooms together. Make sure the girl you marry is the girl you most want to stay up late with when it's just the two of you, and ultimately, the one you love being alone with at home.

humanity and more so about yourself. But you can't get romantic with her over the long term. This isn't because of her age--there's nothing wrong with walking down the aisle with someone younger--but because onesided adoration inevitably curdles into resentment. You might not even want to get romantic with her in the short term because she might feel some real feelings and what you might really feel is the flattering reflection of yourself you see in her admiring gaze. By choosing to let her go, you'll have

5. The Earnest, Bright-Eyed, Younger Woman Who Adores You

done the right thing by acting in the best interests of two connected people. This is exactly what's required when you meet the woman you so, so, so need to marry.

This girl not only wants to commit your every utterance to memory but also heartens you with her sweetness and solemn desire to find love. This will help you more than you know, especially on those days when the women you've dated have caused you to question whether they even have feelings. (We all have those days.) This woman will help you to feel optimistic about

With that said, gents, the next time you feel a connection to a special woman you just met, keep these tips in mind when deciding to put a ring on that finger. n
