o become famous or noted is the desire of most little boys and girls. For those of us fortunate enough to reach high platforms that allow our voices to be heard by the masses, we consider that success. For those of us who reach those platforms and reach down to pull others up—now that’s considered honorable—a blessing even. In this 2015 Gentlemen’s Ball issue of GENTS Mag, we proudly introduce you to a group of leaders and supporters of the LGBTQ community as they dwell in creativity and service, provoke our minds, use their bodies and voices to make impactful statements and most importantly—they exemplify grace and honor.

WINTER WORKOUT WOES GOODBYE SUMMER. HELLO WINTER. Hello colder temperatures, layered clothing, Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, holiday parties, and decadent side dishes and desserts. Now that warmer months have come to an end, for many of us, the reasons we exercise and eat right are placed on the back burner. Then when that time comes for spring to peak its beautiful sunny skies again, we realize that we’ve gained a little bit more than a few great winter memories. But how does one keep exercise and eating right at the top of their list when faced with bone chilling weather or granny’s pound cake? The answer is simple: Set goals, Be Accountable, Stay focused, and Do it. Following these four simple rules can keep you feeling your best, and help you combat those winter workout woes. It’s very important to set goals and make those goals a priority. I encourage clients to set quarterly health and fitness goals thus giving you a constant short target to work towards. This helps to keep you from bombarding your body with trying to do everything at once. Short term goals also help to avoid becoming overwhelmed or discouraged when being introduced to a new health and fitness routine. For example, a goal could be, “by spring time, I want to be able to do 25 pull ups nonstop” or “by spring, I will lose 15 lbs.” If you were to start in October/November, and give yourself until spring to lose 15lbs, you won’t be faced with the pressure that comes with last minute fitness goals. Accountability can also be an extremely helpful method for avoiding the Winter Workout Woe. It is the key to keeping you on track with your 16 GENTS MAG
goals because you have someone making sure you are completing your workouts and eating within your nutrition plan. It increases the adherence to your plan, which leads to your desired results. Not to mention, training with someone often encourages an increase in your effort to train and eat right. Set up multiple accountability partners or start an accountability group. Friends, family members and coworkers make excellent accountability partners. Have a conversation about what your goals are and give them permission to correct you when they see that you are deviating from your plan. Also challenge them to join you and develop their own set of goals. You’d be surprised at how motivating accountability relationships can be. Now that you’ve set your goals and your accountability partners are in place, here are a few tips to help you out if you happen to lose focus or lack the motivation to keep it going.
help get
CHALLENGE YOURSELF TO TRY OUT NEW RECIPES: If you work in a communal environment consider starting a lunch club— similar to a book club, where everyone contributes to lunch for the group on a different day. This will motivate everyone to step outside of the normal take out menu routine and promote healthy eating. ADD NEW MUSIC: A new season deserves new music and swapping out your playlist can change your overall workout experience. Keep in mind that for cardio inspired workouts, the best music is going to have about 140 – 160 beats per minute. For those heavy lifting sessions, you will want to listen to something that will make you feel invincible to give you that extra push.
PURCHASE NEW WORKOUT GEAR: Because the temperatures are changing, it’s probably a good idea to add a few new pieces of season appropriate attire to your fitness wardrobe. That new gear will also come with a little excitement to get out there and show it off! Warning, new workout gear will often bring back the same feeling you had on the first day of 9th grade.
o
ELIMINATE ALL EXCUSES AND JUST DO IT!: The last piece of advice, as cliché as it sounds, is to just get out there and do it. As the old saying goes, “there’s nothing to it but to do it.” Live by this motto because honestly that’s the simple truth of the matter. Exercise and eating right can be a challenge and regardless of your nutrition plan or training routine, your decision to commit to achieving your goal is only something you can initiate and finish. Try to keep the emphasis on the internal and overall benefits versus just focusing on the vanity aspect. And if you are someone who doesn’t normally workout, don’t wait until the start of the new year to get your health and fitness on the right track. If getting out there and starting is the hard part, find some group fitness activities that you may be interested in. If group fitness isn’t your thing, find a program that you can do in the comfort of your own home. Don’t lose sight of what you’ve done throughout the year and slack off because it’s cold outside. That way when spring decides to show itself, you’ll be more like, “what’s up spring!” Instead of, “oh, hey spring.”

Jason never denied who he is per say, but knew he couldn’t be completely honest with them. He joins the Navy during the military’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell campaign, as a means to establish his own independence. He begins to seek like-minded individuals to befriend and gets thrown into a world wind of gay life and culture. He soon realizes just how quickly one can lose sight of who they envision themselves to be…
Saved Sanctified & Same-Gender Loving | A Story Journal to Spiritual Reconciliation Derrick Tennial, Ed.D - $10.00 | amazon.com & iTunes/iBooks African-American Same-Gender Loving (SGL) men are a group that has been historically marginalized by their own families, communities, and churches - shamed into suppressing their homoerotic desires and claiming “faux” deliverance, which has caused many to become oppressed, depressed, and voiceless! Saved, Sanctified, and Same-Gender Loving is not only a proclamation of reclamation for me, but for all African-American SGL men who have lived conflicted lives, tormented by indoctrinated fears of eternal damnation, terrified of being rejected by God and family, and driven to schizophrenic nihilism (feelings of lovelessness, hopelessness, and despair). Sanctified, and Same-Gender Loving is the first in a series that will deal with issues pertinent to the African-American SGL community. It presents counter-narratives that give a different perspective into this segment of the SGL population and asks you (the reader) questions of reconciliation designed to foster transformation. Whether you are straight or same-gender loving, the challenge is for you to approach this book with an open mind and an open heart.

MONEY STRATEGIES for the holiday season Story by ERNEST DUNCAN, JR.
A
s the last days of fall fade into our memories, it will soon be time to close out this year with holiday parties and gift giving. Whether it’s Christmas, Kwanzaa, or the office holiday party, I enjoy the merriment of friends, family, and coworkers gathering together to celebrate. Along with the festivities and gift shopping comes financial pressure. Last holiday season, I went into a frenzy trying to buy gifts for family and friends and ended up with a huge credit card bill in January. I know that I could have avoided this huge bill had I taken the time to plan ahead. Since incorporating lessons learned, I vow not to repeat the same mistakes. Here are some of the lessons that I’ve learned over the past couple of years.
BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND - I use the entire year to
prepare my finances for the holiday gift-giving season. I set aside money each month, putting it into an account to use as my “holiday fund.” You don’t have to remember to do the transfer every month. Many banks will automatically transfer money from your checking account directly into your savings account. When the after-Thanksgiving sales begin, I’m ready to shop ‘til I drop!
GIFT CARDS - Retail stores like Kohl’s offer you cash back in the form of gift cards based on the volume of your purchases. Why not save those gift cards until it’s time to buy gifts for others? It’s almost like free money!
CREDIT CARD REWARDS - Several credit card companies and banks offer you points based on your purchases. For example, CapitalOne’s QuickSilver Rewards offers an unlimited 1.5% cash back points on every purchase. Again free money! You can use those points to purchase gift cards.
Now you can relax and know that you are not destined to overspend. With proper planning and some savvy shopping, you can have a financially stressfree holiday season. Your family and friends will appreciate you even more when you’re not stressed over your finances or the lack thereof. Again, have a plan to know how much you are going to spend. You will be happy you did come January!
MAKE A LIST - Impulse buying, especially when it’s cold and dreary,
can cause havoc with anyone’s budget. Making a list and sticking to it is a great way to avoid impulse shopping. From presents to decorations to entertainment, I’ve made a list of potential purchases. I’m a visual person so seeing the list in writing helps me control the urge to overindulge. Pencil and paper will do however there are several gift-list apps that make the process easy too. Three of the most popular gift-list apps are Santa’s Bag, Christmas Gift List, and Christmas List. Download one to your smart phone and give it a try.
USE DIGITAL COUPONS - Groupon and Living Social are great ways to save money. Great discounts are available for restaurants, retail stores, spas, movies and much more. What’s more appealing than scoring tickets to a local art museum at half-price or grabbing dinner valued at $80 for $40? We can all appreciate a discount, especially when money is tight. GENTS MAG 19

or over 25 years, Cynthia has led a life of dominating runways around the globe from, Paris to Milan. She earned her stripes alongside the likes of Tyra Banks, Iman, Naomi Campbell, Liya Kebede and Beverly Johnson— even accompanying them for a Vanity Fair spread snapped by Annie Lebovitz. The Alabama-born southern belle has pioneered movements, changed history and donned the hat of an activist—even when the heat was on. At the top of her career, in 2011, the Bravo network welcomed Bailey to the Real Housewives of Atlanta cast. Since joining the controversial show, she’s used her star-power to shed light on societal issues like bullying, self-esteem and civil rights injustices. In 2015 she took on the charge of becoming an Ambassador for the Atlanta based nonprofit organization, The Gentlemen’s Foundation. Taking on her new role wasn’t part of a popularity contest—she graciously stepped up to the plate because she recognized the courage and dignity of the corporation. Founded in 2014, The Gentlemen’s Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to the healthy development of LGBTQ men of color. “Some of the most amazing men I know happen to love other men, intimately, but what does that matter? Love is patient, kind and nonjudgmental. That’s always been my stance,” In support of positive and healthy lifestyles, Bailey recently lent her celebrity platform to a public service announcement for the “Testing Makes Us Stronger Campaign,” directed by Patrik-Ian Polk. “It was important for me to participate in this needed campaign because I have lost many friends and colleagues to HIV/AIDS over the years. I am thankful that now there is more information, better testing options and groundbreaking medical treatments to reinforce lifelong health and happiness.” Having recently celebrated a wedding anniversary, the historic Supreme Court decision regarding same-sex marriage highlights the necessity of her purpose and highlights her decision to join forces with The Gentlemen’s Foundation. With an empathetic tone she shares, “I’ve been married for five years now, and I understand how much of a privilege it really is. More importantly, its a right that should be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of sexuality. Especially since the Supreme Court has ruled gay marriage legal. it’s definitely a time to live and not die.”
Rounding out 2015, she heads back to her place in front of the camera for the new season of RHOA. Her namesake, Bailey Agency School of Fashion has been upgraded and continues to welcome over 1,000 students for training annually. Her budding accessory collection, Cynthia Bailey Eyewear has garnered attention from industry A-listers including Rihanna and Anthony Anderson and in 2016 will introduce Cargo by Cynthia Bailey. “I constantly feel like there’s work to do, personally and professionally. I know that I am in a position of visibility and influence for specific reasons and I’ll never become faint while working to my full potential. I hold myself and everyone around me to that standard.” With that benchmark for excellence in place, Bailey again references and praises the work of the The Gentlemen’s Foundation and its mission. “I am honored to be an ambassador of the foundation because the organization represents integrity, class, positivity and most importantly love,” she says. “Love is important. It builds us as individuals and as people.” She continues, “It saddens me that in 2015, gay individuals still feel the need to hide their sexuality. Most are still faced with ignorance, discrimination and hate. We have come such a long way, but still have so far to go. I look forward to the day that this issue is completely accepted, and is no longer a topic of conversation.” She’s a renaissance woman—the perfect company for gentlemen.

hen considering a person who is a seasoned activist, politician, motivator, and agent of change, there are various leaders that are mentioned. Leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Ghandi, Mother Teresa, and Malcolm X are just a few names that are mentioned which are known by the masses. In order for the work of the masses to be seen, there must be those individuals who serve on the local, state, and national levels that ensure that action and change is happening. This happens by having meaningful, powerful and persuasive conversations as well as demonstrations with key individuals to ensure that the issues of the people are not just heard, but also acted upon in a way that justice as well equality shines in the home of the brave. GENTS would like to take the opportunity to honor and commend the efforts of the national leader Congressman John Lewis representing Georgia’s 5th district. Congressman Lewis has dedicated his life to service and is noted as “one of the most courageous persons the Civil Rights Movement ever produced.” He believes in building community in America which is why he is favored on both aisles of the United States Congress. As a young boy, he was inspired by the words of Dr. King and the activism surrounding the Montgomery Boycott. From that time until now, he has worked diligently to ensure the civil rights and progressive social movements. While attending Fisk University, Lewis organized many sit-in demonstrations and participated in Freedom Rides during
the times of Jim Crow. While challenging the laws of the land, he had been arrested and beaten by the mobs all because he chose to take a stand for what he believed in. In his extensive biography, documentaries, books and other sources, we have the opportunity to learn much about the legacy and life of Congressman Lewis. He has taken a journey that most people would be afraid to take, but due to his commitment to the cause, he has endured the struggles and provides us with a wealth of knowledge as well as an example of what a transformational/servant leader looks like. He has received many awards which include but are not limited to: the highest civilian honor granted by President Barack Obama, the Medal of Freedom, the Lincoln Medal from the historic Ford’s Theater, the Golden Plate Award given by the Academy of Excellence, the Preservation Hero award given by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Capital Award of the National Council of La Raza, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Non-Violent Peace Prize, the NAACP Spingarn Medal, and the only John F. Kennedy “Profile in Courage Award” for Lifetime Achievement ever granted by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation. In all that Congressman Lewis has done, he still works very diligently to ensure that voices of the people are heard loud and clear. He is a man of honor, respect, dignity, courage, compassion, intelligence, action, and strength just to name a few of his attributes. We deem him to be a hero not just to our nation, but more specifically to our community. He is indeed the essence of what a true moral leader resembles and we are delighted to honor him. Had it not been for the diligent, risky and costly efforts of Congressman Lewis, many of us today would not be able to bask in the ambiance of the human rights and civil liberties that Congressman Lewis has worked for us to enjoy. hat many people know about film director, producer, screenwriter, singer, and actor PatrikIan Polk, revolves around his acclaim for films that explore Black LGBT friendships and relationships. Born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in 1973, and educated at Brandeis University, the University of Southern Mississippi where he received his undergraduate degree, as well as University of Southern California where he studied at their School of Cinema-Television, Polk is a son of the South who has many times been referenced as the “Father of Black Gay Cinema.” It’s a title he minimizes, if owning his undeniable imprint on mainstream cinema: the Edmond’s Entertainment produced classic PUNKS, LOGO’s Noah’s Arc, or the more recent Blackbird, among other works.
Not one to get bogged down in the critiques by others, Polk notes that,
“once you put something out, it takes a life of its own. I just hope to create good work and make a good living for myself.” It’s fair to say that Patrik-Ian Polk, in a culture where many LGBTQ young people long for representations of themselves in media, has done so much more. He expects to extend his legacy by pitching more ideas for television. GENTS Mag is honored to celebrate Patrik-Ian Polk’s legacy-in-the making. Story by TIM’M T. WEST
As a proud black gay filmmaker, several of Polk’s films have had runs on the big screen in several US cities. He has bravely opened doors for other filmmakers to produce quality projects that broaden the diversity of black LGBT experiences. An affirmation of his eye for talent, we see actors like Darryl Stephens (Boy Culture), Seth Gilliam (Walking Dead), and Jussie Smollett (Empire), among others, continue to make their mark in film. The production of his most recent “Blackbird” which starred Monique, Isiah Washington, and newcomer Julian Walker, was different than his friendship-driven Noah’s Arc or The Skinny. The adaptation of a novel, Polk notes that Blackbird broadened his directorial skills and bolstered his confidence as a director to create even more expansive portraits of not just black gay experience, but human experience. What one experiences when talking with Polk is a man who mirrors his own moniker: Tall Skinny Blackboy Productions. He humbly accepts the calling to reflect life through his eyes; and has a strong desire to create the kinds of characters who are often rendered invisible. His desire to represent characters who might be described as effeminate or trans has come with some critique, though it is an unfair burden for a director to be tasked with representing all black gay and bisexual male experience.

aughn Alvarez is proof that when strong faith combines with hard work, big dreams can come true. Mr. Alvarez is a native of Ashburn, Virginia, just a few miles outside of Washington, D.C. From as early as he can remember his eyes and ears were fixated on the entertainment industry. As a youth he dreamed of being in showbiz in front of the bright lights. But he soon realized that his role in showbiz was behind the lights instead of in front of them. Mr. Alvarez’s meteoric rise started early. As a youngster he modeled for magazines and catalog spreads and even dabbled in television by acting in infomercials. Later, Vaughn joined the critically-acclaimed dance group “Tappers with Attitude” based in Silver Spring, Maryland. His career path started to be diagrammed in 2006 when one day he waiting tables at a restaurant and the next day he was trekking off to Nashville, Tennessee to work as a radio promotions intern at E One Music Group. Mr. Alvarez positioned himself for bigger and better things while working at Nashville’s 92Q radio station. After his spell at E One Music Group he was tapped to join The Word Network in Southfield, Michigan, a relatively new Christian cable broadcasting network at the time. At the network, he teamed with popular gospel recording artist and talk-show host Lexi to create original programming, helping the network to become a major force in the Christian programming industry. At a time when the entertainment industry was not quite sure
what to do with Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, Mr. Alvarez quickly anticipated the enormous impact that social media was going to have on the industry. He skillfully used social media to expand the reach of showbiz and music artists, management agencies, and P.R. firms. His talents and expertise landed him his current position as a publicist with the 135th Street Agency, a public relations firm with dual offices in New York City and Atlanta. His accounts include The OWN Network, We TV, and So So Def Records. As a publicist he’s worked with celebrities such as Brandy, Aaliyah, Faith Evans, Lil Mo’, Marques Houston, Ray J, Mya, Donnie McClurkin, Yolanda Adams, Tameka Raymond, Syleena Johnson, J Moss, and Mary Mary to name a few. He also books talent for Reach Media’s nationally syndicated radio show “The Yolanda Adams Morning Show”. Although most of his clientele are in the secular world, Mr. Alvarez works with a number of gospel music artists. “I love gospel music because it speaks to me. It’s so inspiring and spiritually uplifting”, says Mr. Alvarez. Working as a publicist in gospel music has particularly been challenging since Mr. Alvarez is an openly gay man. “There was no openly gay publicist in gospel music until I came along. I’ve paved the way for other openly gay publicists who are now coming into the industry.” Vaughn’s faith is the key to his success. He got his spiritual awakening in the charismatic black church with its lively worship, inspiring sermons and soul-stirring music. “I love God and I love the church”. His current church home is The Vision Cathedral in Atlanta, Georgia where Bishop O.C. Allen, III is the Senior Pastor. He considers Bishop Allen to be one of the most influential people in his life. Mr. Alvarez relies on his faith in his professional career and personal life. He says, “The entertainment industry is nasty and it will break you if you don’t have faith in God and faith in yourself.” Amid his busy schedule, Mr. Alvarez finds time to volunteer his services at a non-profit agency or group at least a couple of times a year. For example, he handles P.R. and talent booking for Atlanta Black Gay Pride’s annual “Pure Heat Community Festival” at Piedmont Park. He’s also done promotions for Back-to-School campaigns that assist kids in need and worked for agencies that help the less fortunate during the holiday season. When asked what makes him a Gentleman of Promise, without hesitation Mr. Alvarez said he’s living his passion, walking in his purpose, loves God and loves people. “I try to carry myself in a way that [honors] those who came before me and I try to walk in love and operate with integrity.” Although he has accomplished a lot at such a young age, Vaughn Alvarez has not stopped dreaming. He has bigger aspirations ahead of him. His reputation keenly suggests he will arrive at those dreams, too. Story by LEE P. JONES

edrick Tillerson has a benevolent smile, world life experience, compassion, drive, and the autonomous nature that is associated with any great leader. He is a coach, athlete, community activist, and businessman. It is his tenacious spirit that in 2013 allowed him the courage to create and build his non-profit organization named, 4US Sports Foundation. The organization hosts a dedicated team ready to serve the community by educating, mentoring, and raising awareness of the LGBT sports movement, here in America and abroad. The organization is gaining much ground progressing LGBT basketball and volleyball teams further into the mainstream. Born and raised in Henderson, Kentucky, Dedrick developed a love for basketball at the age of seven, while playing on the Junior Basketball league in his hometown. He quickly learned the fundamentals of playing on a team, keeping what he learned close to heart. He later became a hometown hero as a track star holding 3 award titles in the hurdle event. He was recruited and attended Purdue University where he trained in the 200-meter and 400-meter relays, as well as the hurdles. He is a graduate of the University of Kentucky, obtaining three All-American titles, three NCAA championship titles in Track and Field, and was an active member of the Athletes & Allies LGBT Athletes Association on campus. He still holds record book times in the 400-meter relay at the university, making him a 400-meter specialist. After college, Dedrick trained in Track and Field professionally competing internationally in the hurdles, from 2007-2010 before an injury lead him to retire from the sport. Dedrick is currently a resident of Atlanta, Georgia. He is founder and President of 4US Sports Foundation. He is an active member of the community volunteering his time on and off the court as coach of two Atlanta based LGBT basketball teams, and an LGBT volleyball team. When he’s suited up in his basketball uniform, he plays the position of Center Forward, with the Atlanta Fury. The team won the 2015 Championship title during the tournament held by his foundation this past August. Dedrick was a coach and facilitator of the event partnering with outreach organizations offering peer counseling, advocacy, and free HIV screenings during the event.
Dedrick’s compassion for the community has him dividing his time mentoring at the Boys and Girl’s Club, feeding homeless citizens at the Atlanta Mission, and playing an active role in the group Athlete’s in Action, addressing the need to heighten the visibility of LGBT athletes nationwide. He works with this organization at Georgia State University, Kennesaw State University, and Emory. The 4US Sports Foundation works in conjunction with these entities for the progression of the LGBT Sports movement by offering safe havens he calls Open Gym. Open Gym is for anyone who wants to learn how to play the game, challenge his team mates/players, network, or who simply want to enjoy the game as an ally while tweeting and spreading the word about the mission and goal outlined on the foundations website: 4ussports.org. Dedrick Tillerson is a man with a God-vision who chose to answer the call to love and serve the community while sharing his gifts, time, talent and energy. He is a prime example of what recognizing a problem and developing a solution to negate said problem looks like. Great leaders don’t know they are great leaders until they are recognized, and even then they find it hard to believe. Dedrick Tillerson selflessly states, “It’s just me doing what I love to do, sharing knowledge, and leaving a map for who’s next.” Story by JOHN COLLINS

ometimes in our lives, our choices really do determine our destiny, whose gravity is often unbeknownst to us at the time of our decision. Kelvin Atkinson, a democratic state senator from Nevada, made decisions early in his life that placed him on a trajectory that would one day catapult him into the national spotlight. Kelvin Atkinson’s life might very well be a euphuism for the well beloved poem, “The Road Less Traveled” by Robert Frost. Atkinson began working for local government in 1991, but has been giving back to his community since his days as a student at Howard University. It wasn’t until after the birth of his daughter Haley that Atkinson first ran for the Nevada State Assembly. Atkinson’s goals then and now have been to improve educational opportunities for his community, through advocacy and community engagement. Upon his election to the Nevada State Senate in 2012, he secured eighty percent of the vote. Atkinson had previously served ten years in the Nevada State Assembly.
In the last legislative session the Nevada State Assembly passed approximately seven hundred and fifty pieces of legislation. Senator Atkinson, is most proud of his efforts to help overhaul the energy sector in the state of Nevada, along with his educational advocacy work. Senator Kelvin Atkinson is the first African American to serve in both legislative houses in Nevada. Atkinson continues to be a champion not only for educational opportunities for the citizens of Nevada but also for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender rights across the state of Nevada and the nation. He cautions young LGBT men and women seeking to follow in his footsteps that “being gay is not a career choice.” He advises that they study people with like career paths, take a little bit of knowledge from each person and focus on something that will progress them throughout the years. Reflecting on his speech identifying as a proud black and gay man in front of the legislative assembly, the Senator states, “ I always wanted to be judged on my merits, the work I do in the legislature, versus my color, sexuality and other identifiers.”

from a Moment to a Movement Story by DERRICK TENNIAL, Ed. D
JUST exactly what is “Black Lives Matters?” Black Lives Matter (BLM) Thirdly, Black Lives Matter should seek to bridge the generational gap
is a grassroots effort that grew out of the outrage of the acquittal of George Zimmerman of the death of Black teen Trayvon Martin. Starting as a mere hashtag, it gained momentum after the deaths of Michael Brown, John Crawford, III, and Eric Brown. Although there is an official website that proclaims that Black Lives Matter is “not a moment, [but] a movement,” there appears to be no formal organization. Nevertheless, in three short years, it has grown to include 23 independent chapters and participated in over 1,000 protests and demonstrations nationwide. While Black Lives Matter effective in bringing attention to police brutality and problems within our justice system, there are some things that it should be conscious of as it seeks to become an effective, long-term organization. Currently, Black Lives Matter is a confederacy – a decentralized network of chapters acting independently. The lack of a formal, legal structure gives the appearance of chaos and promotes Fox news correspondent Elizabeth Hasselbeck’s misconception the organization is a “hate group.” Without structure, the establishment will only see Black Lives Matter as a mere moment, not a movement, not a force to be reckoned with, and certainly not a long term threat. Secondly, Black Lives Matter should be mindful “not to throw the baby out with the bathwater.” Black Lives Matter is not the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Middle-class values, loyalty to the Democratic Party, and working within the “system” do not appear to be their strategy for advancing the cause. However, these Civil Rights Movement tactics painted a vivid picture in the media so the world could see American oppression and force systematic changes. With social media, imagine how much more effective Black Lives Matter could be by adopting and adapting principles from the Civil Right Movement. If it worked once, it can work again.
with Civil Rights Movement pioneers. There is reported “bad blood” between the organization and some Civil Rights leaders. However, now is the time to come together with one agenda for the good of all Black people. There are pressing issues that need our immediate attention (such as constant changes to the Voting Rights Act) that threaten the progress we have made. In words of songwriter India Arie, “If old people would talk to young people, it would make us a better people all around.” Lastly, Black Lives Matter must include all black lives. The chief organizer of the March on Washington in 1963 was Civil Rights activist Rustin Bayard, a Black gay man; however, the Movement did not include a strategic plan for the Black gay community. Although understandable for that era, times are changing. The Black gay community is increasingly strong and active with a voice that deserves to be heard. Have the oppressed become the oppressors? It was only a little more than 50 short years ago Blacks were denied basic civil liberties that many now want to deny the Black gay community. There must be a strategic plan for the Black gay community within and not separate from the overall agenda of Black Lives Matter. Black Lives Matter is fresh, new energy that has galvanized Blacks in a way not seen since the Civil Rights Movement to effect systemic change once again. However, it will never happen if Black Lives Matter remains a loose network of independent chapters without a common vision – a confederacy – never to rise again just like the last one…a moment, but never a movement.

[IN THE SPIRIT]
STAND IN YOUR LIGHT Story by LONNELL WILLIAMS
“STAND IN YOUR LIGHT” is not just a tagline I use to encourage others, but is also the way I try to live my life. What exactly does it mean? How does one achieve it? Like anything worth sustaining, it requires effort and spiritual practice. The results? Joy. Unspeakable joy. Spirituality is often associated with religion and joy with emotion. Cowering solely to these two associations stifles our potential. To “stand in your light” means to show up in life, present and unashamed, as the fullest expression of your true self. Not easy, especially in a culture where we thrive on the approval of others. This is not about religion. This is about honoring your purpose for having the gift of life. Joy is a state of being; sustaining contentment and peace in a world that appears full of chaos. Lofty expectations you say? I say essential and achievable. I find a critical conduit to inner peace is finding YOUR unique spiritual path. You may find it through religious practice but many do not. Perhaps you feel most alive when working out (doing it for your well being and not because of the attention your chiseled abs or firm, exposed “cakes” bring while “twerking” shirtless in the club). Maybe art, sports, reading, traveling or cooking bring you joy. Whatever centers you, honor it! I believe joy is our birthright. Not there yet? Start identifying the painful patterns which seem to repeat endlessly. For me the most recent indicator i had more work to do was getting kicked to the curb by the man I loved….on Facebook! Having a full emotional breakdown in a hotel room, I finally had to accept I was just as responsible a contributor to this collapse as he. Getting there wasn’t easy. I called him all

[LOVE RELATIONS]
SO YOU CAN MARRY... NOW WHAT? Story by TIM’M T. WEST
T
here were varying beliefs in the black LGBTQ community about Marriage Equality. To be sure, both the public imagination and legislative reality seemed to suggest that the gay rights equal rights to marry. The reality for many or most black LGBTQ folk is that even with the passage of marriage equality, there would still be concerns about access to health care and an HIV epidemic where we can still track disproportionate infection rates. There’s the continued reality that many black LGBTQ folk are underemployed, black transgender women are murdered at alarming rates with little resource to a justice system that barely acknowledges them, and LGBTQ black youth in schools are subject to bullying, have high truancy, are over-represented in the criminal justice system, and represent a large percentage of youth who are homeless or unstably housed. So you can marry, now what? I’m hardly a hater. I’m happy about federal marriage equality, in part because so much of the attention to LGBTQ equity has centered around this right to marry that the ability to focus on a broader range of issues that impact black LGBTQ folk is critical if we are to thrive. For many black LGBTQ people very little remains changed after the SCOTUS decision to make Marriage Equality Federal. In June of this year, being partnered with hopes that if Marriage Equality was passed, I might consider a move back South, I was admittedly compelled by the decision. It weighed heavily in my decision to move to Atlanta. I couldn’t imagine living somewhere my relationship wouldn’t be seen as equal to others, whether I married or not. My dating experiences, in particular, with other black men were challenging. There were few brothas in my dating history who shared aspirations to marry a guy. Most couldn’t imagine it, didn’t believe

it, or felt it was “going too far.” When I started dating my current partner, I was happy to discover that marriage was both an option and aspiration. Upon moving to Atlanta in July, I’m reminded that Georgia, like many other Southern states, has any number of OTHER repressive laws that impact us: from the lack of employment protections or hate crime legislation to “no promo homo” laws in schools or threat of religious freedom exemptions that would enable discrimination against gays. So yeah you can marry but you can also be fired if someone finds out with little legal recourse. With a presidential election just around the corner and significant threats to civil rights legislation which enabled black and LGBTQ equity, many would be advised to take the walk to the voting booth as seriously as the walk down the aisle. We are misguided if we mistake the growing acceptance of gay best friends on Housewives shows or representation on “Empire” as sign that true equity has arrived. For me, it’s not about being for or against marriage; it’s about acknowledging that having piecemeal civil rights—black rights without LGBTQ rights, or vice versa—yields the partial freedom that marked brotha Bayard Rustin’s tragic outcast from his pivotal role in Civil Rights organizing. I dare to envision and enable a society where my freedom is realized on all terms. Rather than being an empowered black man and an oppressed, shamed, and marginalized queer brotha, I aspire an existence where my Pride isn’t partial. Otherwise, I can only sit with the reality of second class citizenship when one asks: “Now you can marry, so what?”
