The Story Behind // Christ In Me There was a time where I was feeling dirty from my sin, falling and getting back up again each day. During this difficult time, Scripture lifted me and renewed me. I went through all the books in the Bible that Paul wrote. It was during this season that Galatians 2:20 really spoke to me – “I have been crucified with Christ, it is no longer I who live, but Christ in me”. I wrote down that verse and made it one of my life verses, which turned into a song and hymn for months to come. For weeks and months this Scripture was my meal and food that I chewed on as I was walking and spending time with God. I started singing “Christ in me, the hope of glory”. Not knowing what this meant, I asked God. He said, “Stef I am in you; my hope is in you; my glory is in you. All I want is for you to give me your life and allow me to be on display in this world and throughout the nations.” So I sang the verse for months to God, making it a song and declaration in my life. The whole song was born without an instrument, just Scripture and God giving me the melody. My dream and call in my life is to see Christ lifted high and see Him draw people to Himself, and for me to decrease (John 3:30). So came the chorus “We lift You up higher and higher”. My life and all our lives together as the body of Christ are meant to worship Him. Then came “we shout as one, Your holy choir”, like the angels in Revelation around the throne. We come and worship all together, “proclaiming that He is God”. The God of our lives, the God who is able, the God who has the power to make all things new, the God who heals, the God who mends, the God whose hand is not too short to save, the God whose love is not based upon our ability to meet His standards. What I want to convey in saying and declaring this song is that “There is no one like our God, there is no one like You.” I pray that this song will awaken all to know that they have been crucified and that it is not us that live, but “Christ in me”. This means that we are more than conquerors (Romans 8:37), that we are the head not the tail (Deut 28:13), that the spirit of the Lord is upon us (Luke 4:18-19); Isaiah 61, that we are called, anointed and appointed just like Jeremiah 1:4, and that we have authority and power in Christ Jesus (Luke10:19). -Stefan Green

OUR Story Behind // EVERMORE This song originated years ago from one late night practice of creativity taking an old Hillsong and putting our own arrangement to it. Putting unique guitar riffs, quickening the tempo, and worshipping with it over and over again, we have adopted it as our own. Many have sung it through out the years in worship at Teen Mania, whether it was a missionary coming to our Global Expeditions mission trip training, a camper at Extreme Camps, Honor Academy interns during our chapel service, or a teenager at an Acquire the Fire event. The words in this song have such deep commitment displaying our love & affection toward God. I know many kids in this generation have such a fear of man and care too much about what their peers think. They are afraid to lift their hands in worship at youth group or boldly live out their faith amongst friends at school. Yet when we sing these words “Even if my world falls I will say, Above all, I live for your glory,” it commands a response and an unashamed commitment that demands us to stand strong no matter what obstacles we face. A commitment that not only comes from our mouths as we sing it, but also penetrates to our hearts despite the difficult circumstances we may face. Whether our parents get a divorce, we loose a loved one, our peers mock us for what we believe, or our world comes crashing down on us, still our hearts will say… “Above all I live for your glory!” One young girl emailed us sharing about this song’s impact when she attended the Miami Acquire the Fire in 2009. Right after the event, a good friend of hers got in a car accident and passed away. In the midst of her heart ache, she remembered her encounter with God that weekend. This song replayed in her head over and over as she renewed her commitment in her heart, “Above all I live for your glory.” -The School of Worship Band

The Story Behind // THE CURE I had just finished reading a book by John Piper called, “Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ.” The entire first verse and chorus (almost word for word) were taken from part of the book. The entire song is a logical progression of call-and-response. I wanted to paint a picture of how terrible we are in our filth and sin. We were figuratively the ones who spit on Jesus as he carried his cross down the Via Dolorosa. We mocked in his trial and we nailed him to his cross by our sin. The very God that we so carelessly proclaim to love was nailed up on a cross with a crown of thorns rammed into his head because of that sin. The repeating chorus is a simple response concerning the recognition of sin and its terrible consequences. “I bow my face to the dirt, in light of selfish sin unseen”the very sin we think we got away with or the sin that we had hid so carefully from man is now the very thing exposed in the light of the blood of Jesus. “I shut my mouth and I open up my heart, now ready to receive the Gospel shown by the love of Jesus, King of All Kings.” No more excuses. Just silence on our part, and an open heart ready to accept the free gift of grace and redemption. Jesus the Messiah broke the curse of sin and death and “Now I’m free!” This whole first half of the song came VERY quickly. I sat on my back porch with a guitar for about two hours and it was there. The rest of the song was slowly written over about a three week period- maybe a line a day. The bridge more or less sums up the entire song. It is not of any good that I have done in my life that I am made new, but it is by the blood and sacrifice of Jesus Christ that my sins are driven as far as the east is from the west. “Today is the day I am saved in Jesus name. I am a new man.” -Corey Robinson

OUR Story Behind // Nothing but the blood “What can wash away my sin? What could make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus...” When you start talking about topics like “the blood of the Lamb” or being “washed in the blood” in our society, people start getting a little weirded out. Nobody wants to dive into a “crimson flood of blood” or anything similar to that. It’s just gross! So allow me to attempt to shed a bit of light on this idea of the blood of Jesus. It’s really very simple. The Bible says that the wages of sin is death. Everyone that’s been in Sunday school knows that verse. Basically sin = death. And the opposite of death is life. The only way for us to shed our death and enter into eternal life is for our death to be covered by a perfect life. That is why God sent his only Son, Jesus Christ to die for our sins. Since His blood literally was the blood of God, it had the power not only to cover and forgive our sins--forever-- but also to reverse the very curse of sin and put us in right standing with God. It literally washed away our sin and destroyed the very nature of sin in our hearts. Jesus “made the trade”, taking our death, sin, and punishment on Himself and dying with it, effectively nailing it to the cross and taking it to the grave. We then receive His righteousness as a permanent gift, a brand new heart--His heart!--so we no longer have to be enslaved to sin. And His blood is the hinge for all this. Jesus’ blood (or life) covers our sin (death) so that we can be called the sons and daughters of God. Our band decided to revamp this hymn, making the old new and relevant to a new generation. Wherever we’ve played this song, it seems to resonate with both old and young. The truth never changes or goes out of style. We believe the song, “Nothing but The Blood,” brings clarity and truth to a generation that often replaces the simple truths of theology with whatever stirs our emotions. In many ways, we are very ignorant of the deep things of God, the truth and theology that defines us as Christians. The Apostle Paul told his young friend Timothy to pursue “sound doctrine”, or the essential elements of faith in Jesus. Our generation would do well to take that advice to heart. In our society, where anything and everything goes as long as you believe it to be true, we’ve got to hold tight to that word of life that saves us. The truth that nothing else can save, nothing else can wash away our sin. Nothing but the blood of Jesus. -The School of Worship Band

The Story Behind // Sit enthroned This song came together over a 4 year period starting with the bridge. During a worship service at my church, I remember being on my knees, captivated by the Lord’s holiness, as a new song and melody came out of my heart, “You are my King, enthroned to be my everything, my everything.” It stuck with me. Over the years I tried to put it into others songs that I wrote, but it never fit. I continued to worship with it in my prayer closet, yet for the time being, it just stayed on the shelf. I was once told that 80% of people don’t remember sermons after 3 days, but they remember songs because the melodies stick with them. With that in mind, I started writing songs from sermons that I would listen to and hear at church. One week during a chapel service at Teen Mania, David Ravenhill spoke an impactful message. He shared that in the Old Testament there was such a reverent approach to God through the Mosaic Tabernacle. Priests were set apart to minister to God on behalf of the people. They had to make sure they were clean and approached the Holy of Holies with reverent fear. If they weren’t clean they could instantly fall dead in the presence of God’s perfect holiness. Yet now God made a way for all of us to come near Him through the blood of His Son, Jesus Christ. The point in the message Mr. Ravenhill spoke on was that we sometimes lack the holy fear of God when approaching Him. Today there is no priest to go before us, but God has set us apart to be His royal priesthood and our bodies to be His temple where His spirit dwells. Yet God has not changed. He is still perfect and Holy. However, many times we are not set apart from the world. We go to the altar over and over asking God to forgive us of our sins, but we aren’t willing to let go of the stumbling blocks such as ungodly relationships, music, media, mindsets, addictions, and so on which are the roots that cause us to sin. This song was written to be put on the lips of the church as a response to Christ’s sacrifice, giving Christ His rightful place to sit on the throne of our hearts. It’s a prayer sung of surrender not just giving Him our sin, but EVERYTHING within, the control and the supreme reign of our lives for Him to change us and make us holy. I feel God’s heart strongly for his people when leading worship with this song. I love to see God’s Spirit move on people’s hearts as they cry out “I’m not just giving you my sin, but everything within,” bringing people to a place of true repentance and surrender. -Mary Vorrath About the Writer // Mary Vorrath Birthdate: October 1, 1985 Hometown: Harlan, Iowa Instrument: Vocals, Guitar

The Story Behind // MATCHLESS GRACE This song has had a very complicated journey. I wrote it back in 2006 while I was still in high school. I just sat down at the grand piano at my church, in the dark on a Wednesday night, and the first, second, and fourth verses just came out. It wasn’t really difficult at all. It came out almost exactly as it exists now. I still have the scrap of paper I first wrote the lyrics down on. I took that three-versed version of the song and won districts for songwriting at the Assembly of God Fine Arts program that year. After coming to Teen Mania, the song was being considered for the first School of Worship album, “Praise is Awaiting”, and that’s when the third verse came about, really wrapping up the journey of the song in a cool way. But it still felt like it was missing something. So after it went on the album, what is now the chorus/bridge part came out of the blue one night and I decided to tag it onto Matchless Grace. It worked, and it stuck. Matchless Grace is packed with theology, which is one of the things I love about it. It’s incredibly wordy, but also very repetitive and catchy, so I hope that churches and congregations will find inspiration and, honestly, be able to glean teaching from it. That’s one thing that is really cool about modern hymns. I grew up hearing my dad say things all the time like, “these new songs just don’t have the same meat, the same deep words that the old hymns do.” My dad loved old songs. I have noticed lately there has been a movement of what you could call “modern hymns” being written. They are usually very simple melodies, but packed with the Word. “Matchless Grace” is an example that has a lot of theology about the cross, for the cross and the resurrection really are the center-pieces of history and everything we believe as disciples of Christ. That’s why you’ll notice the word change in the fourth verse from “righteous Lord” to “risen Lord”. I wanted to make that journey complete from that last line in the third verse: “Your death has brought my Spirit life!” Because without the fact that Jesus Christ rose again, we have nothing--as Paul says, “your faith is in vain”. The primary goal of this song is simply to inspire worship. I guess that should be the goal for any “worship” song, but I sincerely hope that the words and imagery of “Matchless Grace” will paint Jesus and His sacrifice in perhaps a different light than we’ve seen Him before and provoke a new adoration, a new spirit of amazement and true heart worship to our King. -Joel Herbert

The Story Behind // RESONATE This song is based on Psalm 139. However, it didn’t start that way. I was actually quite frustrated with myself at the time I wrote this song. I noticed myself being distracted with the busyness of life and my thoughts were not centered on the Lord. I noticed I was living my life out of my own strength and not relying on God. My heart felt empty and weary. So there I was in my room with my guitar just singing out my prayers to God. Then this chorus came out, “I can’t stop thinking about You, You won’t stop thinking about me…” I was really just speaking to my mind, telling my thoughts to be on the Lord, just as David spoke to his soul when he sang, “Bless the Lord, oh my soul, all that is within me bless His holy name,” (Ps.103:1). Then I started thinking about how God is so crazy about me and how He is always thinking about me; how much more should we always be thinking about Him! I thought about His love, His goodness, all that He’s done, and His faithfulness in my life. The rest of the chorus came from thinking of a couple in love; they can’t stop thinking or talking about each other. Sometimes they even have this goofy grin on their faces that tells the world they are madly in love. Thinking about that made me reflect on how much more God’s love is toward us, for He is the Creator of love itself. Then the rest came out… “I can’t take this smile off my face, ‘cause your love song resonates in me.” The verses came later. I actually had completely different verses for a while with this chorus, but it didn’t fit. I eventually went back to Psalm 139 which is all about God’s thoughts toward us. The verses came together very quickly from there. I hope to see this song accomplish for others what it did for me- to recognize God’s love for us and to respond to that love by making Him the very center of our lives. “We love because He first loved us.”(1 John 4:19) -Mary Vorrath

The Story Behind // KING OF THE BROKEN For a while now, I have felt this burden on me to serve the poor and needy of this world. A lot of my songs have had that kind of a theme. If you study the life of Jesus, He was always very intentional about ministering to people that no one else wanted to touch--the poor, the broken, the unlovely. I believe that is one of the closest things to the heart of God, and we cannot call ourselves friends of Jesus if we refuse to love broken people. So that’s the premise for this song, the opening line. Because Jesus was the one that set the precedent, that touched the untouchable, that loved the unlovely. And really, all of us, however put together we are, are ever so broken and poor on the inside. Hidden beneath our Abercrombie t-shirts and Converse tennis shoes, each and every one of us is in dire need of a Savior, Someone who will reach down through and in spite of all our mess and save us. And He did. I love the way this song progresses because it’s a pretty normal worship song, but I feel like it approaches Jesus in a different way. The verses are really the Gospel in a nutshell, all leading to the chorus, where we can just let go and worship-- “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain, to receive all glory, power, and praise”-- the chorus and bridge are straight out of Revelation 5, out of which numerous worship songs have been written. But the Bible says that’s what we’re going to be singing in heaven, so we better get used to it! It all comes down to the third verse, which directly describes the cross. This is what happened to us when Jesus died for us: He is the “author of justice”, the One who cannot abide evil in His presence, the One who ordained the wages of sin to be death. And because of this capital priority on justice, there had to be a just trade. A sinner cannot simply walk away free and claim that justice was served. It wasn’t! A judge can’t tell a murderer, “because I’m in a good mood, I’m going to have mercy on you and pardon your death sentence.” That’s not mercy. That’s obstruction of justice. So Jesus Himself made the trade, giving Himself as a “ransom” for us, our strong Deliverer, or as Scripture calls Him, “mighty to save” (Zephaniah 3:17). Jesus Christ, and only Jesus Christ could make the sacrifice that could save us, since He is the only perfect one to ever exist--the Champion of Heaven Himself. And that, I think, wraps up the wonder, the amazement, the worship we owe Jesus well. Our God, our Lover, our Glorious Boaz, the Beautiful Sovereign, the Father of Lights... We will be Yours always... -Joel Herbert

The Story Behind // FULLY KNOWN Some songs are written out of pure inspiration- you hear a melody or a sequence of lyrics in your head and it all comes together within a couple of hours. Some songs are written through toil and labor. You work hard for months, even years to find the right words, the right melody, or that right chord progression. The latter is the case with Fully Known. In the summer of 2008 I had the original inspiration for Fully Known as a chord progression. I fiddled with it and eventually wrote the lyrics “Fully known and fully owned by love”. It was inspired by 1 Corinthians 13:12 which says, “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known”. The rest of the lyrics came to me over the course of about a year, with help from my pastor Tony Herring. The core of the song is an observation of what Christ did for us, and the internal response of making the Lord OUR God. The LORD is not only the God and Sovereign over all creation, but He is MY God. I simply want the work of Jesus to be made evident through Fully Known, for God to be glorified through the life, death, and resurrection of His Son, written and expressed through this song. -Jim Cardoza

The Story Behind // Come back home “Come Back Home” was written out of a desire to write a song about the love of God. I had the chord progression written, so I just kept playing it over and over again trying to come up with lyrics. After a while, I felt like the Lord was asking me to write it from His perspective. What would He say to someone addicted to drugs, lust, cutting, materialism, etc.? The list could go on and on! The heart of God is not that any should perish, but that all would believe in Christ Jesus and be made new by His grace. One line in the song says, “I paid for you to enter in, so let the work of grace begin.” Jesus paid the price! Salvation is a free gift from God, and He gives us the grace to live like freed people. The bridge, written by Jim Cardoza, has a sort of problem and solution message. It reminds us that no matter the sin, no matter the hopelessness, our God is strong! There is no chain He can’t break; no wall He can’t breach! God is strong! My heart, and I believe the heart of God, for this song is to tell people who have seen the ugly side of life, or maybe who are just caught up in striving for a “better” life that amounts to nothing, that there is hope! There is mercy! God’s mercy is new every morning! As the chorus says, “You have never gone too far! My mercy still remains!” God’s hand is never too short to save. No mater where you are or where you’ve been, the call to “come back home” is not exclusive, but goes out to all people! Hear the Lord’s call! “Come Back Home!” -Cody Brunet & Jim Cardoza

The Story Behind // RISE UP This song was easily the fastest write of any of my songs on the album. It came along after the original deadline for songs to be turned in had passed. I was in my dorm room thinking to myself, “I should write some kind of an anthem”. About the time I was getting ready to hop in the shower. So that’s where the chorus came together. Probably within an hour, I had a pretty good sketch for the rest of the song written out. This song is really a call, based out of I Peter, to all those “who’ve been redeemed”, or to quote Peter directly, “a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation”. There is so much Christianity today that really has nothing to do with Christ. It more like a moralistic philosophy with Jesus as the figurehead. My goal for “Rise Up” is that it begins to destroy that false foundation, the phony gospel that is more about what God can do for us than it is about taking up our cross and living a life of worship to the only One who is worthy. As much as it is a call, it is also a war cry, a passionate wail from the depths of the soul. Dead, dry, moralistic religion is something that mandates you to behave a certain way out of fear or obligation. But it doesn’t change you. Our relationship with Jesus is so much deeper than that. It must be a burning, flaming inferno of life that stands in the face of all hell and defiantly screams, “We will NOT be bought!”-- the kind of Christianity that is not ashamed to say that we are simply sojourners passing through this place, that we look for another city whose builder and maker is God, that “we have kissed the world goodbye.” Those are the kinds of people that God is pleased to call His own--those whose hearts are found fully after His, who want no part of this world and its ways, who refuse to dabble at the line of sin, who truly know what it means to embrace and love lost people while keeping their hearts uncompromising and blameless before their Father. In the middle of a crooked and perverse nation, they shine as lights in the world. My prayer for this song is that it will inspire an attitude that will never quit, never back down, never surrender. How could we respond in any other way to the love of the Father? After all, “We once were dead, but now we live... we’ll never be the same again...” -Joel Herbert

OUR Story Behind // With Everything The word everything means “all, every single part”. Whatever venue this song is played at, whether it be in an arena in front of thousands or in the confines of a small room, the challenge remains, “What is my everything? How do I give my everything to Christ?” We often say that we give everything to God. We lift up our hands in abandoned surrender and say “Yes God! I give you everything! All that I am is yours!” but in our hearts we are saying everything BUT... “I give you everything but my girlfriend or my boyfriend. Everything but my mom or my dad. Everything but this internet site. Everything but this eating disorder, this alcohol, these drugs. Everything but these movies, video games, my music, my car or my career. Everything but my dreams and aspirations. Take everything but...” There is a long list of things that we would rather hold on to. We hold on to things we don’t even think about like jealousy, anger, pain, lust, unforgiveness... We forget that God wants our EVERYTHING. That means both the good and the bad. It is an everyday process. God wants our hearts. He loves us. He gave His everything. The question still remains, “Will I give my everything?” This song was written by Hillsong. We started playing this song a few summers ago after one of our band members, Cody Merrill, went to a Hillsong Conference and saw how powerful the song was and how much people responded to the Lord. We then started playing it and made our own arrangement to it, adding the bridge from our original song “Christ in Me” as a reprise to the album at the end singing “There is no one like our God, there is no one like You...” This song never ceases to get an intense response from the crowd because the act of surrendering everything to God isn’t something we just do one time. It’s a process. It’s a constant reminder that evokes a surrendered response over and over again. That is what this song says to me every single time I hear it, sing it or play it: everything... sometimes our own words cannot describe what we want to give or how we feel. Sometimes we can only express our feelings with utterances and groans. When it gets to that chorus of “Woh oh’s” , it is the sound of complete surrender. No words, just oh’s. “Here, take it. I don’t want it anymore.” Watching the effect of this song and this message time and time again in churches and arena events is powerful. To see teenagers on their knees weeping before the Lord because they are desperate for Him is indescribable. They are reaching out for the heart of God. This generation is reaching, is desperate, and is longing for Jesus; Arms up, complete surrender. Shouting forth the praises of God, giving Him the glory and honor. This is just how it should be. -The School of Worship Band

Too many times we see our culture and churches elevate the talent of individuals too quickly before they develop their character. We want to see authentic worship leaders and musicians raised up with integrity, discipline, and vision that will sustain the destiny that God has called them to!” –Mary | Director of The School of Worship
