Georgetown University McDonough School of Business
Dear Students and Parents, This is an exciting time at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business. To prepare future global leaders, we have created new majors in International Political Economy and Business; Managerial Computing; and Management, Leadership, and Innovation. And, in addition to offering an opportunity to study abroad at nearly 70 institutions worldwide, we have developed three summer programs specifically aimed at business in the global arena: Global Entrepreneurship in Barcelona, International Finance in Oxford, and Intercultural Communications in Shanghai. As a business school within the Georgetown University academic community, we build upon the Jesuit heritage and mission of Georgetown by developing lifelong learners who are intelligent, ethical, and socially responsible civic leaders. Our faculty and the Undergraduate Program staff develop transformational experiences that foster academic excellence, create community among students, and encourage students to view an undergraduate business education as broad-based academic preparation for a future as a leader in both for-profit and nonprofit organizations. We invite you to expand your academic horizons by participating in our First Year Seminar, Entrepreneurship Fellows Program, Alumni Mentor Program, and Peer Ambassador and Leadership Program. Our students prepare themselves to serve business and society with a global mindset by volunteering and working with numerous organizations — both in Washington, D.C., and around the globe.

I love how a typical weekday might consist of motorcades around the school because a prime minister is on campus. I love that in a class of 24, the person to your right might be interning at the White House while the person to your left could actually be the Prince of Jordan. I love the basketball games. I love Georgetown Day. I love homecoming weekend. I love that my friend is also my bank teller at the studentrun credit union. I love that if you name any language, there is bound to be a Hoya that speaks it. Fluently.

Georgetown was exactly what I was looking for in a college — a traditional campus located right in the middle of a major city. More than that, the friendliness and enthusiasm of every student I met showed me that Georgetown would be the perfect fit for me. The courses offered at the McDonough School of Business sounded exciting, and I can remember wanting the opportunity to take as many of those classes as possible. The atmosphere of Georgetown’s campus, combined with the McDonough School of Business’ reputation, made college selection an easy choice for me, and I can’t imagine being any happier!

Patrick Wyman H o m e t o w n : Denver, CO M a j o r : Finance and Marketing N a m e a t r a n s f o r m at i v e e d u c at i o n a l m o m e n t: One of the most defining moments for me was my first marketing class at Georgetown. I had my heart set on majoring in finance and finance only. After my first class in marketing, all that changed. I loved it. I considered switching tracks completely and only majoring in marketing, before realizing that there was no reason I couldn’t combine the two. Find your interests and pursue them, no matter how disparate they may seem.
During the first and second years, the primary academic emphasis is on the liberal arts core. Students complete courses in subjects such as English, philosophy, theology, history, and economics, while beginning the Georgetown McDonough business coursework by taking classes in accounting, business statistics, finance, marketing, management, and business law. In their junior and senior years, students follow a business core in operations and information management and in strategy, before completing coursework in their major. The McDonough School of Business strongly supports students who choose a minor in one of the nearly 50 liberal arts disciplines. This path allows students to explore and merge diverse interests into their educational pursuits. Approximately 25 percent of Georgetown McDonough students minor in a liberal arts subject.
Building on this shared foundation, Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business offers the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with six majors:
The undergraduate program at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business prepares all students to pursue careers and advance their education in business administration by providing a comprehensive foundation in core business disciplines. In addition, Georgetown’s global mindset boosts students’ awareness of and familiarity with international enterprise.

The First Year Seminar entitled International Business, Public Policy, and Society is an exciting way for first-year business students to explore the nature of scholarship, think about important ideas in business, and foster intellectual and personal growth while adapting to the rigor of college-level courses. With an emphasis on global perspectives, these seminars establish mentoring relationships with faculty, strengthen critical academic reading and writing skills necessary for success
in college, and introduce students to the importance of giving back to the community. The program culminates in a case competition in which students develop a strategic solution that addresses current business challenges facing a nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C.
Entrepreneurship Fellows Program (EFP) Through a blend of coursework and co-curricular activities, the Entrepreneurship Fellows Program helps students understand their personal entrepreneurial aptitude, learn from entrepreneurial mentors and faculty, bond with their peers and experienced mentors, and prepare them to pursue an entrepreneurial career in new or existing organizations. Many students are unaware of how to go about pursuing an entrepreneurial career; EFP gives them the knowledge and the tools to do so. Students apply to the program in their sophomore year. In addition, the Undergraduate Program Office teams up with Hilltop Consultants, a student-run nonprofit consulting group, for an annual nonprofit case competition at Georgetown University. The case competition, called the Business Strategy Competition at Georgetown University, garners participation from students at the nation’s top undergraduate business schools.

“ Case competitions give our student teams a unique opportunity to apply what they are learning, including problem-solving skills, marketing skills, finance knowledge, strategic thinking, and communication abilities. And students carry the Georgetown University flag as they represent our school against other top schools from around the world. Every team I work with says this is one of the most memorable experiences of their time at Georgetown. Of course, it’s also great to win first place in a world-class competition like the prestigious one in Copenhagen and get to meet the Crown Prince of Denmark.” —Th o m a s H a j d u k , P h . Alumni Mentor Program (AMP) The McDonough School of Business Alumni Mentor Program links current undergraduates with the best and brightest Georgetown alumni in both the Washington, D.C., and New York City metropolitan areas. Participants engage in group events as well as casual individual meetings with their mentors. This program helps students network with recent graduates from a vast array of companies and industries. Students also have the opportunity to seek advice about job searching, interview skills, career choices, academics, and extracurricular activities to make their college career a satisfying one.
“ Participating in the Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship Program is a unique way for students to do research on a topic of interest to them. By working one-on-one with a faculty adviser, students learn how to use the research process to inform a real problem that is of interest to them. In its inaugural year, students worked on topics as varied and complex as determining what influences one’s career choice to understanding why people fail to appropriately change their behavior after nearly catastrophic non-events. The Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship Program is a great way for students to supplement their classroom learning by doing hands-on research.”
Case Competitions
— K u r t C a r l s o n , P h . D . Associate Professor of Marketing and Research Director of the Institute for Consumer Research
Students who take part in case competitions develop their teamwork, problem-solving, and presentation skills. The McDonough School of Business sponsors teams of students at numerous case competitions and leadership conferences both nationally and internationally. The competitions present challenging cases that require students to apply knowledge from all areas of business to reach innovative solutions. In March 2012, a team of McDonough students finished first in the prestigious Copenhagen Business School Case Competition.
Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship Program The McDonough Summer Research Fellowship is an extraordinary opportunity for undergraduates wishing to conduct independent summer research under the mentorship of a Georgetown McDonough faculty member. Undergraduate research experience is invaluable—from
creating the project to drafting the timeline, sustaining independent work, writing up the research, and eventually presenting the findings. The skills gained through securing and completing a summer research grant are immeasurably helpful for a strong undergraduate record, future graduate school admissions and study, and post-graduate fellowships.

Students are also involved in arts organizations, sport clubs, the cable TV station, a range of publications, and political and social activism. And, in the spirit of cura personalis, or development of the whole person, students have the opportunity to participate in campus ministry programs. Programs are developed around many faiths to embrace the entire Georgetown community.

“ Georgetown University has a soul, animated by the Catholic and Jesuit tradition that for hundreds of years has integrated learning, faith, and service. As a university, we strive for academic excellence, promoting the unfettered search for truth and depth of learning. As Catholic, we seek to bridge faith and reason, to foster inter-religious understanding, and to care for the whole person — mind, body, and spirit —- in the uniqueness of one’s talent and promise. As Jesuit, we educate for justice, summoning students and faculty to put their learning in the service of others, particularly for the most poor and vulnerable. In the end, we at Georgetown are measured not simply by what our students do but who they become as persons — more wise, more courageous, more committed, and more loving.” —R e v. K e v i n F.
