I was drawn to the Executive MBA program because I wanted to be surrounded by peers who had a strong practical background in business, and I saw the passion of professors and students I met with on campus. The faculty are insightful, diverse, and challenging. The quality of the professors was exceptional, as was their general willingness to work with us beyond the classroom. I took the Mergers and Acquisitions course just as my company was evaluating the acquisition of a competitor. Professor Gary Blemaster provided me with insights that helped us value the deal and make key assumptions that led to a successful acquisition. The cohort experience was the most amazing part of the program. Over the course of two years you really get to learn about your fellow students, and the diversity and quality of the student mix were continuously inspiring. To get so many critical and valid points of view really expands your mind and challenges your own views. I made many lasting friendships and have developed a personal “board of directors” who I trust will challenge me and deliver critical insights whenever I call. I know I’m a more effective leader. I have learned to listen better and listen longer. I have more self-confidence that comes from greater knowledge about my career and my role in business. And I have gained an even greater respect for the incredible challenges that humans face.

Also, the format for the EMBA program was ideal for my busy schedule. The entire program experience made me better at what I do. Each class challenged me in different ways, from leveraging the techniques and frameworks in preparing multi-year business strategies to interpreting financial reports and making better forward-looking decisions based on them. I also find myself constantly going back to materials from the strategy and marketing classes. I leaned on the excellent case-based knowledge foundation to tackle a major downturn in my own industry. Lynch (EML ’11) Lead Associate, Booz Allen Hamilton Having been in the United States Marine Corps and having served as a leadership instructor to newly commissioned officers, the concepts of leadership were significantly important to me. I enrolled in the Georgetown McDonough EML program because it was what I was looking for in a graduate program — a focus on how to achieve professional success in myriad types of organizations and not just in corporate America. The EML coursework was relevant to my career, and my career enriched my coursework. Taking such fantastic courses with great instructors while still working full time creates a vibrant classroom environment with invaluable discussions with classmates and peers. The concept of self-awareness was critical to understanding my own effectiveness as a professional.
