UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM

A Message from the UNDERGRADUATE DEAN At McDonough, we take pride in our global imprint and focus supported by our Jesuit heritage. In an increasingly borderless world, business continues to grow in importance and value for solving the world’s greatest challenges. Global immersions allow students to experience firsthand the realities of what is, as opposed to portrayals in the public discourse. Global leaders of the future must be equipped to tackle complex problems within shifting geopolitical and business landscapes. It is because of our fidelity to this mission that we can say with confidence that our graduates are global ready. We have been in the global business industry for more than six decades, and our faculty expertise has helped shape the strategy of every business sector. As you explore our many global immersion programs, we encourage you to imagine a world where McDonough graduates can engage in experiential opportunities in any corner or culture of the world. Global is for all because all must be part of the global tapestry of business leadership.

Patricia J. Grant, Ed.D., MBA Senior Associate Dean

B.S. IN BUSINESS AND GLOBAL AFFAIRS To prepare students to lead in an increasingly complex world, Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business and the School of Foreign Service now jointly offer a Bachelor of Science in Business and Global Affairs (BGA). The BGA is distinguished by an innovative and integrated approach to understanding the complex interactions among forces that operate at the intersection of business and international affairs. It features: • A four-year sequence of new signature courses designed and co-taught by the faculty of both schools • A diverse learning community

• On-location experiential learning in Washington, D.C., and around the world • Strong academic preparation for positions in multiple settings and sectors requiring practical experience and a global perspective

The signature course sequence extends first year through senior year, including multiple opportunities for you to engage with the rich resources of Washington, D.C. — NGOs, policy centers, government agencies, embassies, industry associations, and more. In addition, you will participate in three credit-bearing, structured experiences abroad, including one 2-3-week, multi-location international experience at the end of junior year, and two 7-10 day, single-location international experiences over spring break during your junior year and winter break during your senior year.

GLOBAL BUSINESS FELLOWS PROGRAM The Global Business Fellows (GBF) Program is an interdisciplinary certificate program with the Walsh School of Foreign Services (SFS) that allows business students to enroll in SFS courses to help them expand their understanding of international business and public policy on a macro level. The program includes three distinct elements: INTERDISCIPLINARY CURRICULUM The program teaches fundamental principles of business with required coursework in international affairs, economics, and languages. This combination of courses enables you to conceptualize and solve challenges that impact business and public policy on a global scale.

PUBLIC POLICY PROGRAMMING You will have several opportunities to interact with economic leaders and public policy decision-makers in Washington, D.C.

GLOBAL BUSINESS EXPERIENCE The capstone of the program is the Global Business Experience (GBE) course, where student teams will partner with a multinational organization (client), on a consulting project to address the client’s business challenges. The course culminates in a weeklong, international immersion to the client’s country, affording students the opportunity to present their team’s recommendations to senior management in the client organization. Fellows have the flexibility to choose a major and minor of their choice. In addition, fellows receive a certificate at graduation and receive notation of this distinction on their university transcript.

“The GBF program has been an amazing interdisciplinary experience that has shaped my education at Georgetown. The academic component has built a strong economics foundation, and encouraged me to stretch the way I think and learn by taking classes in the School of Foreign Services (SFS) in advanced topics of interest including strategies for global business, multinational companies and global value chains, and sustainable cities and urban planning in Latin America and Asia. Aside from academics, I’m grateful to have grown close with my cohort of SFS and McDonough students and learned from the many GBF programming outside of the classroom. Overall, the GBF program has prepared me well to enter the workforce as a global citizen.”

ANANYA CHOWLA (MSB’22) “As a politics-oriented SFS student looking to learn the fundamentals of business on a global level, the GBF program was exactly what I was looking for. Through GBF, I take meaningful coursework that challenges me to think critically and globally, while also building a well-rounded skill set for the professional world. I recommend this program to any student who seeks the same opportunities.”

HENRY DAI (SFS’ 22) “Being a GBF has opened my eyes to the interdependence that exists between business and public policy. I’ve learned how events in one part of the world can and will impact events in another part of the world.”

GLOBAL BUSINESS EXPERIENCE

The Global Business Experience (GBE) is a three-credit, semester-long course that integrates business disciplines with international policy and consulting. Working with a team, you will conduct a substantive consulting project for an international business — private, public, or nonprofit — to address a complex business challenge. The projects culminate in a weeklong trip to the client organization’s location, where you will present your findings and recommendations to senior management. Projects have focused on innovation and technology in Tel Aviv, Israel; retail business in Lille, France; global wine industry in Mendoza, Argentina; consumer products in New Delhi, India; confectionary industry in Barcelona, Spain; and startups and entrepreneurship in Spain. The GBE course also counts as an elective for International Business majors. McDonough students can select from the global experience courses with a focus that fits their academic and professional objectives. “As someone fascinated by the different ways the business world operates and intent on pursuing consulting after graduation, the GBE served as the best of both worlds. My project gave me intimate and constructive client experience with extremely passionate entrepreneurs and access to wonderfully driven and special people. I also had the chance to experience so many new things, from horseback riding and white-water rafting in the Andes to authentic chorizo and maté.”

CARTER OWEN (B’20) “The Global Business Experience course was the highlight of my junior year! Having the opportunity to fully immerse myself in another culture provided unparalleled skills and opened my eyes to different ways of conducting business. It’s one thing to simply read and watch videos about another culture, but to be able to experience it firsthand is truly life-changing.”
