Undergraduates at Georgetown receive a liberal arts education steeped in the Jesuit traditions of social justice and cura personalis, or care of the whole person. The university is committed to helping you grow intellectually, spiritually, and emotionally and to prepare the next generation of global citizens to lead and make a difference in the world. Georgetown stands out as the home to a remarkable community of scholars. You will study the most serious issues confronting the world today and will be exposed to events, speakers, and service opportunities that foster thought about the world beyond our historic campus gates. Become part of a true community with the opportunity to learn and grow in an environment of respect, friendship, and a shared sense of mission.

The MCDONOUGH BLUEPRINT

McDonough Initiative on Student Formation & Well-Being McDonough is proud to be at the forefront of interdisciplinary collaboration on Well-Being Research, and we are an integral part of institutional conversations on the positive impacts wellness has on student formation. We remain committed to better understanding how we can help you not just survive, but thrive at Georgetown. The McDonough Blueprint explores a student’s entire experiential and educational journey, mapping the types of learning opportunities available to you as a Georgetown undergraduate. Well-being is the holistic foundation of this journey, essential to who you are and who you have the potential to be.

Wellness Wednesdays are held at McDonough each Wednesday morning. We provide healthy snacks in addition to programming and information that focuses on your physical, spiritual, intellectual, and emotional wellness. An homage to the Latin phrase per aspera ad astra — through hardship to the stars — Ad Astra Retreats help you find your personal north star with the guiding philosophy that a life steeped in meaning yields profound value to those who seek it. These overnight experiences focus on student formation, well-being, and making meaning through high-impact learning exercises, guided reflections, and expert-led skill-building workshops.

Preparing for Life Beyond the Hilltop Across all of our initiatives we prepare students to launch successfully into the real world. Today’s business leaders are expected to be balanced, ethical, and to constantly perform at their best. We give you the tools you need to thrive in your life after you graduate from Georgetown McDonough.

“Providing resources specifically for McDonough students shows that our deans prioritize our well-being, which encourages us to prioritize it for ourselves.” RED TAYE (B’20)

Travel Through GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES in BUSINESS

To learn about global business, we believe you need to experience global business. Opportunities range from a semester or year abroad to our customized summer study abroad programs, the Global Business Experience consulting project, and global case competitions.

Nearly 60% of our undergraduate business students have a global experience

GLOBAL BUSINESS EXPERIENCE  As a leader in global business education, McDonough provides all students the opportunity to travel abroad to consult either within an industry or with specific Fortune 500 companies. Working in small teams, you will partner with executives from multinational organizations to address complex business challenges. You will work remotely for several months before spending one week in the client’s country to present your final recommendations to the organization’s leadership.

“The Global Business Experience challenges students to integrate and apply what they’ve learned to help advise a real client with a real global business problem. The experience emphasizes problem solving, critical thinking, cultural intelligence, and relationship building — both with clients and their classmates.” MICHAEL O’LEARY Teaching Professor of Management Faculty Chair, Undergraduate Program

Special Curricular Opportunities First Year Seminars

The First Year Seminar (FYS) Program is an exciting way for first-year business students to explore the nature of scholarship, think about the relevance of business in society, and foster intellectual and personal growth while adapting to the rigor of college-level courses. You will develop a mentoring relationship with faculty and strengthen critical academic reading and writing skills necessary for college and career success. Seminars also include a case competition where you will work in teams to address a challenge featuring a local nonprofit.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program

Each summer, the McDonough Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) offers grants for students to conduct research with a Georgetown McDonough professor. Grant recipients complete an original research project on topics as varied and complex as artificial intelligence in economic forecasting and the productivity of the 40-hour workweek. Upon completion, students present findings at a research symposium.

Senior Honors Thesis

The Senior Honors Thesis program provides business students invaluable experience in conducting advanced original research on a topic related to their field of study in which they have a particular interest. You will work closely with faculty mentors to frame research questions, manage different methodologies, and communicate findings in a substantial piece of writing. Seniors defend their thesis to a faculty panel, and upon successful completion, receive a notation on their transcript to reflect their accomplishment.

“The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship was an amazing opportunity to do my own research on Rwanda. It opened up so many doors beyond Georgetown ranging from contacts in my fields of interest, to building profound relationships with my deans and professors, to being a strong candidate for employment opportunities.” STEVEN MUCYO (B’20)

DISCOVER LEARNING OUTSIDE of the CLASSROOM Student Engagement and Leadership

Georgetown University is home to over 250 student organizations that contribute immensely to shaping campus life and culture. Student organizations provide events and activities central to the student experience, while also allowing opportunities for you to develop valuable leadership skills. The wide range of student organizations ensures that you will find at least one club that supports an identity, culture, professional or academic discipline, recreational activity, or general interest that matches yours.

National and Global Case Competitions Students compete in teams to develop business strategies that address a current business challenge facing real or theoretical organizations. Cases vary from strategy and ethics to issues facing the financial and organizational structure of institutions, as well as elements related to the social responsibility of business. Each year, teams from premier universities around the world are invited to compete in our own international case competition, the McDonough Business Strategy Challenge.

Entrepreneurship Initiatives We offer an array of opportunities for you to take entrepreneurship courses, join an entrepreneurial organization, or connect with local entrepreneurs. Through the campus-wide Georgetown Entrepreneurship initiative, you can learn from entrepreneurial mentors and faculty, bond with peers, and develop the business acumen necessary to pursue an entrepreneurial career in new or existing organizations.

Client and Project-Based Learning McDonough courses connect students to nonprofits, Fortune 500 firms, and governmental organizations both in Washington, D.C., and around the globe. Your experience in client and project-based work will heighten your engagement with the course’s academic themes as well as enhance your technical and professional applications of the learning.
