WHY VISITATION SUMMER ENRICHMENT? Sharpen your mathematics, polish your English skills, use forensics to solve a crime, become a digital storyteller, or learn to code! Summer enrichment classes offer a fun and engaging way for any student to prepare for her freshman year. This year, we have expanded our options to offer a wider variety of experiences! Hands-on courses will introduce students to new fields, reinforce academic concepts, and provide training and practice on the iPad. Classes are also a great opportunity to get to know the campus and build friendships with fellow members of the Class of 2020 before school starts in the fall. MATH CONCEPTS, SKILLS, AND APPLICATIONS June 27-July 22* 8-9:30 a.m. Open to all; priority to recommended students A strong base of conceptual understanding, together with good math skills, is essential to the successful high-school math experience. To that end, this class will be tailored to the individual ability of each student. Topics include: operations with fractions and integers, factors, exponents, roots, and ratio and proportion, presented in a setting of algebraic expressions and equations. Tuition: $500

ALGEBRA I, PART II

June 27-July 29* 8-9:30 a.m. By invitation only, based on recommendation(s) after placement testing on April 16 This is a course for students who need more algebra practice and instruction in order to advance into a higher-level math course. Upon successful completion of this course, a student may advance to Accelerated Math I her freshman year. Second semester Algebra I topics covered include: operations on polynomials, exponent rules, factoring, solving linear and quadratic equations, slope and graphing linear equations, and simplification of radicals. Tuition: $500

Aa ENGLISH ENRICHMENT June 27-July 22* 9:45-11:45 a.m. Open to all; priority to recommended students Students will learn to write more clearly, to read more purposefully, and to express themselves orally with more precision. A novel, play, poems, and short stories will provide the source material. Skill work will focus on grammar, outlining, and vocabulary; and these skills will be applied in essay-writing assignments. Organization, time-management, and basic study skills will be stressed. Tuition: $500

<p> DREAM, LEARN & CODE June 28-July 1 12:30-2 p.m. Open to all Have you ever wondered how an interactive computer or online game is created? If so, this class is for you! Students learn about computer programming and computational logic concepts using MIT’s free programing language, Scratch. They will explore how to define variables, create conditional statements, create loops, and create I/O statements. Students will have the opportunity to create their own stories, games, and animation, as well as share their coding creations on the web. No prior knowledge of the program is required, only a desire to learn how to code. Tuition: $125 DREAM, LEARN & CREATE July 5-8 12:30-2 p.m. Open to all Students will learn how to turn their dreams and ideas into tangible objects with the use of computer-aided design (CAD) and our 3D printer. CAD is the use of computer systems to aid in the creation, modification, analysis, or optimization of a design. Students will learn how to make 3D CAD renderings of everyday objects, such as a keychain with your initials, or a coffee mug. No prior knowledge required, only a desire to dream, learn, and create. Tuition: $125

CSI VISITATION July 5-8 2:15-3:45 p.m. Open to all This “Crime Scene Investigation” workshop introduces students to the development and history of forensic science, examines the techniques professionals use to collect, preserve and analyze evidence from crime scenes, and reinforces the final role that law enforcement and the public play in controlling crime. Tuition: $125 plus $5 materials fee SERVICE IN THE CITY July 11-July 15 12:30-2 p.m.* Open to all Students will be introduced to Catholic Social Teaching as it pertains to Visitation’s Christian service activities. Through classroom discussion and local service activities, students will look at service through the eyes of St. Francis de Sales, and will gain a better understanding of social injustices in our area and throughout the world. Service hours will count toward the 80-hour service requirement for graduation. *Some days class may return to campus after 2 p.m.; specific dates will be communicated before the session starts. Tuition: $125 PSYCHOLOGY & METACOGNITION: LEARNING HOW TO LEARN July 18-22 12:30-2 p.m. Open to all Students will be introduced to the principles of metacognition—awareness and knowledge of one’s own learning and thought processes. Demonstrations and strategies to improve attention, perception, and short-term and long-term memory will be presented so that students can explore what research-based approaches work best for their own personal learning styles. The class will be fun and interactive, and will introduce students to skills that can be used throughout their high-school careers. Tuition: $125

SALESIAN SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP July 18-22 2:15-3:45 p.m. Open to all Learn how to leverage business principles for social justice. We are called to serve the poor by sharing our time, treasure, and talents. How can we use our talents? This course introduces girls to ways of leveraging their God-given gifts to effect social change. Students will learn key social entrepreneurship concepts and terminology, applying business principles and creative problem-solving skills to address problems impacting our community and the world. We will explore real case studies, and students also will identify a social problem and come up with a potential solution. Tuition: $125 DIGITAL STORYTELLING July 25-29 12:30-2 p.m. Open to all Become a digital storyteller! Students will learn how to create a flowing narrative through video. With their iPad, they will film and edit short high-quality videos. Using editing software, students will discover how to edit footage, add sounds and transitions, and most importantly, tell a compelling story. Tuition: $125 INTRODUCTION TO PAINTING July 25-29, Aug. 1-5* 9:45-11:15 a.m. Open to all Students will explore the elements of art (color, light, line, composition) through the creative process. Participants will use acrylic paint to create a color wheel, tint and shade chart, then a monochromatic masterpiece on canvas. To end the session, students will create a plein-air piece (outdoor painting) on Visitation’s beautiful campus. *Students may take one week or two. Tuition per week: $125 plus $10 materials fee

is Orientation, which is required for all math and English class students and encouraged for all other classes. Orientation will include a welcome, prayer, campus tour, and iPad training. Details to come. Note: Monday, July 4, 2016 is a school holiday.

Registration & Fees: Registration is April 4-29 at www.visi.org/summer. Full tuition is due at registration. All class fees are non-refundable after Friday, June 3.

Enrollment: Enrollment is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis. Georgetown Visitation reserves the right to cancel any class that does not meet the minimum enrollment.

Credit: Students do not earn credit for summer-school courses. Books: Details regarding books and materials for classes will be shared at a later date. iPads: iPads are required for math and English classes, and students must bring their iPad on the first day of

class. iPads will be used to take and organize notes, submit assignments, and view course materials. The courses will introduce students to apps that they will use during the school year, such as Notability. Other classes may also require an iPad; more details will be provided later.

Lunch: Lunch is NOT provided. Students taking both a morning and afternoon class are responsible for their own midday meal.
