In 1998, the school gymnasium, which had been built during the Great Depression, was renovated into the Catharine E. Nolan Performing Arts Center. Enlarged to accommodate a theater and dance studio, the building was named for “Kitty” Nolan ’29, a longtime friend of Visitation who served as the Executive Secretary of the Alumnae Association for 15 years (1949–64). Groundbreaking took place in April 1997, and it was dedicated on October 4, 1998, at a well-attended kick-off event and picnic to celebrate the school and Monastery’s bicentennial. r ' s o t n c o e te r i D Welcome back to Nolan! Thank you for joining us and supporting the arts at Georgetown Visitation. We are so excited to have a live audience for this show. The production team and cast & crew have diligently worked to present this amazing performance of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale. 6

A late work of William Shakespeare, The Winter’s Tale is a story of many timeless human emotions. Originally set in a semi-mythological world, I felt there was no better place to set this production than in a real mythological world, New York City. New York City is a place where anything can happen and does happen. It is a place of dreams; a place of magic and creation. This best holds true during the Harlem Renaissance. This was a period of innovation in literature, music, dance, education, fashion, economics, and social justice fueled by the works of artists as W.E.B. DuBois, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Lois Mailou Jones, Langston Hughes, and Selma Burke who were inspired by the love of a mother, the local butcher, the smell of the cotton and tobacco fields, the call of the preacher, and the sound of the “A-train”. The Harlem Renaissance was a time where the genius of the Black community was able to shine and inspire the world. The Visitation Performing Arts Department has continued to persevere during this challenging time. You can say we are in our own renaissance. Streamed concerts and stage productions, a motion picture - the pandemic has allowed us to find new and creative ways to keep the arts alive while keeping our performers and audience safe. Our students are still designing and building the sets, making props and costumes, creating hairstyles, and running the sound and projections with increased energy and creativity. We are proud to incorporate an ASL interpreter for this and future productions. We will continue to strive to create new and inclusive arts experiences for our students and audiences. On behalf of the entire cast & crew, a special “thank you” to the entire Visitation community. Thank you to the GVPA and the many parents who have graciously donated items and their time. Thank you to Lisette and Maurya for your support and creativity. You are the best! Thank you to School Days Productions for their creativity and impeccable professionalism. Thank you to our amazing musicians! Thank you to the Sisters for their smiles and prayers. Thank you to Dr. Edmondson, Mrs. Ponzio, and Mrs. Clay for their unwavering support. A HUGE “thank you” to my wonderfully wonderful CAST & TECH CREW!!! Thank you to R.A. and my family for your love and support. And thank you to my grandmother - I loved hearing about your time at the Savoy Ballroom and dancing around Harlem. These are conversations I will forever cherish.

e r t ' s n i T a W l e e h T synopsis

William Shakespeare’s "The Winter’s Tale", a story of loss and redemption. In a fit of jealousy, Leontes, the King of Sicily, convinces himself that his pregnant wife is carrying his best friend’s love child. Leontes’ jealousy turns to tyranny as the king proceeds to destroy his entire family and a lifelong friendship. Set in an imaginary world where Bohemia has a seacoast, and where ancient Greek oracles coexist with Renaissance sculptors, it offers three acts of unremitting tragedy, followed by two acts of restorative comedy. The production of “The Winter’s Tale” is reimagined to take place during the 1930s; the heart of the Harlem Renaissance.

f o h y a r r o l t e s m i H The Harlem Renaissance was the development of the Harlem neighborhood in New York City as a Black cultural mecca in the early 20th century and the subsequent social and artistic explosion that resulted. Lasting roughly from the 1910s through the mid-1930s, the period is considered a golden age in African American culture, manifesting in literature, music, stage performance, and art. By 1920, some 300,000 African Americans from the South had moved north to Chicago, Philadelphia, and New York City. During this period known as the Great Migration, Harlem was one of the most popular destinations for African American families. The Savoy Ballroom was a jazz nightclub in Harlem, New York. It was located between 140th and 141st Streets, at 596 Lennox Avenue. The Savoy opened in 1926 during a time called the Harlem Renaissance when the arts flourished among African Americans in the United States and Europe. Unlike many ballrooms such as the Cotton Club, the Savoy always had a no-discrimination policy. Lindy hop dancer Frankie Manning said that patrons were judged on their dancing skills and not on the color of their skin: "One night somebody came over and said, 'Hey man, Clark Gable just walked in the house.' Somebody else said, 'Oh, yeah, can he dance?' All they wanted to know when you came into the Savoy was, do you dance?"

Congratulations Bella! Mom and Dad are so proud of our dear Camillo. Happy star, reign now! And best wishes to the entire cast and crew of The Winter’s Tale for a fantastic performance!

Director…………………………………………………………………................…..........................Neptune Pringle III Acting Coach……………………………………………………………..........................................Lisette LeCompete Technical Director…………………………………………………….......................................Maurya Sorokes ‘06

Neptune Pringle, III is an accomplished musician, choreographer, performer, director, and teacher. His parents saw that God had given him a great gift and quickly sought to nurture it. At 5 years old, Neptune began playing the drums in church. His musical instrument interest quickly shifted. It was at his home church of Heavenly Temple C.O.G.I.C. in Jersey City, N.J., where Johnnice Knight-Blake, the Minister of Music, introduced him to the organ. Neptune plays multiple instruments, has studied various styles of dance, and has studied with some of the world’s greatest artists. He is a proud graduate of The National Dance Institute, where he studied under famous ballet dancer, Jacques D'Amboise. He is an alumnus of The Richard Stockton University, where he became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He holds degrees in music, African & African American studies, and economics. Neptune conducts arts, arts education, and cultural workshops, and masterclasses throughout the country for churches, academic and performing arts schools, and companies. He has performed, directed, and taught around the world sharing his passion for the arts. To his father, “Thank you for my first guitar, drumset, and keyboard.” To his mother and sisters, “Sorry for the noise. I was exploring my sound.” Maurya Sorokes ’06 has served as the Technical Director at Nolan Center since 2016, before which time she served as the Co-Technical Director for three years. After graduating from Visitation, Maurya attended NYU Tisch School of the Arts and the Stella Adler Studio of Acting. While at school, Maurya worked as a scenic carpenter and lighting technician on school and outside productions. After graduating from Conservatory, Maurya worked on and “crew-chief-ed” lighting crews responsible for high-profile weddings, museum exhibits, Fashion Week fashion shows, TV productions and the like. Additionally, Maurya worked with a travel carpentry crew responsible for staging product launches, setting up company/industry parties in NYC, and renovating businesses in Buffalo, NY. She is always honored and humbled to again be a part of the theater that introduced her to the passion and the skills that she needed to be a successful full-time technician and theater artist.

Cast & Crew bios

Jade Adams ‘25 (Sound) has not had much theater experience outside of Visitation, but she likes musicals and singing Disney songs when she is bored. What made her realize she wanted to join Tech Crew was when she thought back to a play they had at Visitation, Letters to Sala. Along with sound, her second department is props. The things that Jade is most excited about are seeing The Winter's Tale finalization and getting more familiarized with the different equipment used for sound. Isabella Aguilar ‘24 (Camillo) Bella is so excited to be able to participate in her first Visi Masqueraders production. As someone who loves Shakespeare, she was thrilled that her first big play was The Winter’s Tale. She enjoyed working with the other cast members, Mr. Pringle, and Ms. Lisette. The Winter’s Tale is a great use for her extreme amounts of energy and a perfect excuse for random screeching before practice. Mary wants to thank Mr. Pringle, Ms. Lisette, and all the students for helping her transition into Visitation and to a bigger role in the theater. Mackenzie Conlon ‘25 (Costumes) is excited to be working with the Visi Arts cast and crew! She has two years of theater experience and is excited to gain more working on The Winter’s Tale.
