I’ve heard it said, paperclips are the future. I finally believe it, I don’t even want to think what this project would be like without them.

The first part of the brief to be under taken was to choose three blue plaques. I decided upon Aubrey Beardsley as the Artist, John Bernal for his scientific research and P.G. Wodehouse for his outstanding contribution to English literature.

blah blah blah its all about
Wodehouse. 7
Our first plaque took us just off Park Lane to Dunraven Street and the home of the author P.G Wodehouse. He was reknown for his humourous writings.

been poured into her clothes and forgotten to say
when.
The research of the area and of P.G Wodehouse involved a 360 degree photo sequence of the immediate area outside of his house. Some internet research into his works and background. The body of the research was displayed in a blog format for its presentation to the rest of the class. http://threeblueplaques.tumblr.com

The angle of the research gathered about the three plaques was aimed at the average tourist. can be extremely difficult to navigate let alone find a blue plaque in. To make it an easier process the route to each of the houses was recorded. this was done by taking a series of photos of each road name you came accross.

BERNAL
John Desmond (1901-1971), Crystallographer, lived and died here. 44 Albert Street, NW1 Camden 2001 John Bernal was one of Britain’s best known and most controversial scientists. He pioneered X-ray crystallography. He also determined the structure of graphite and did work on the crystal structure of bronze. He also had some input on the investigation of the structure of liquid water. 13

BEARDSLEY, Aubrey (1872-1898), Artist, Lived here. 114 Cambridge Street SW1 Westminster 1848
Aubrey Beardsley was an illustrator as well as an author. His works were majorly influenced by Japanese art and were all monochrome. He had a short lived career dying of TB at the age of 25. He favoured the use of heavy contrasts of black and white within his work and was famous for his grotesque scenes of erotica. He was known to be associated with Oscar Wilde and there were rumours of an incestuous relationship with his sister Mable. 17

INTERVIEW
Like the kooky art kids we are we approached the interview with reckless abandon. The questions put out to baffle and confuse and for us to chuckle over at a later date. The obligatory questions were asked of course. She came from Brighton to Victoria station and was there for the day. She did like apples.

West North East - Narrative
NARRATIVE is arguably the most important aspect of design. The task was to develop our primary research through narrative. Taking information we had from the locations, people, interview, found objects and the journey itself and moving it forward into a narrative. The use of a narrative being such an important tool in guiding and engaging through design. My narrative grew from a facination with the book and this character
Sardinia Vera.

Narrative
THE BRIEF Following on from task one remain in your group of three and develop through further in depth research the locations that you visited. Present the narrative as an exhibition piece to be displayed in the studio by 4:00 pm on the afternoon of Friday 14th October. The narrative can be presented in any appropriate medium: The most important factor is that your audience can easily understand it with little need for captioning or explanation statements. Remember the vital importance of good craftsmanship in design.

For the
exhibition
we were encouraged to disreguard the obvious choices. A mind map was made and we drew upon the main points from our narrative. Sardinia Vera had played such a huge part in the story that we felt that it was imperitive for her to continue on. Previous stories had been quite bloody. Sardinia crossing the road and then being hit by buses etc. so he we had come to terms with her immortality. The taxidermy idea came from a chat I had with a goal keeper at hockey, who collected taxidermy. It was so obsurd that it stuck in my mind and them seemed perfect to play tribute to this character Sardinia Vera. Documeting her life like the rare species she is. How many old italian paperclips do you know? Sadly I have personified a paperclip and grown quite attatched to her.
To get a good idea of the way we wanted to display her life we went on a trip to the natural history museum. this gave us ideas about the captioning, backgrounds and cases. we also looked on ebay and online stores to buy a vintage display case. The display case in the end was a simple white deep frame from Homebase. The paper clips then glued to a white background. The beauty of the final narrative was the intricacy inwhich the situation changed. We felt that the paperclip should capture this. You can see Sardinia growing up and then unravelling in her death. Along with Sardinia’s display case was a box of paperclips with notes on these ranged from simple facts about paperclips to complete nonesense -definitely the funnest part of this projectthere was even some with instructions how to pick locks. interactive exhibitions are often the ones you remember the most.

Camden The two main areas I went to, to find the plaques were Westminster and Camden. My further research will disect these two areas focusing on the contrast in cultures. Focusing on typography and displays.

41
Typography in Camden eclectic, bright, individual and bold.
42
Five years ago, no one really knew about Camden, but now you find it in every tourist guide about London. It started as something really cool, and then it turns into just another way to make money.
It is the punk capital of the world, it is seen as an area where the alternative schene can grow.
43
Signs in Camden These photos illustrate the huge difference between bespoke shops and the chains(HSBC etc.)
44
Top Sans Serif Road Sign Effective due to the contrast of this crisp typography compared to those of the shops.
Bottom Left Pub Graffiti Displays the humour of the area well. Bottom Right Hanging Sign.
45
Left Scene from Oxford St. Right Selfridges window display.
The immediate area around P.G Wodehouse’s house is the corner of Park Lane leaing onto the west end of Oxford St. The comparison therefore, is mostly of Oxford St. to Camden. There difference in atmosphere is the first thing you notice. With a lot of hustle and noice
46
emphasis being on the hustle. Oxford st. is a major tourist attraction and especially at Christmas becomes exausting to traverse. The window displays are big bold, with bright lights. Similarly to the camden shops, the Oxford St shops during Christmas displays can
cover the entire building. There is no alternative vibe but the general feel of the place is money. People with money going out to spend loads of money in businesses that have loads of money run by people with loads of money. Personally i like it a lot shops put a lot of effort into new displays
Oxford Street, Westminster and methods of trying to make you buy there products. The brands along the highstreet are bigger with names such as Rolex and Selfridges. It seems that even the cheaper stores such as Primark have decided that size will make up for the fact that they aren’t are classy as some of the others. Well, it works! The French Connection Christmas display was my favourite as it summed up the style of the area best. Simple yet extravagent, the typogrophy is unfussy, something that cannot be said for anything in Camden. There is a distinct lack of culture with most of the shops morphing themselves into what they think will sell. I decided to do some graphic outcomes for Camden advertised in the style of Oxford Street and vice versa.

I read that it is hard to get a picture of a punk in Camden, that they don’t like it. Envasion of their pravacy I assume. The objects we found for the West, North, East project had to some data on them. It was crazy that someone would throw away something that
they seemed unimportant but could easily lead to identity theft. I wondered then, how easily is it to get personal data off of people? My search to find out as much personal information brought me to Camden blogs. You also get a vast amount of pointless information.
“So, today was a success. I found my perfect Creepers in Camden Town and I am oh so in love with them.” http://caitlinmariella. tumblr.com/
55
People just throwing out information about themselves in the hope that someone will care. I find this concept odd and slightly disturbing. I think the use of socail networking sites have desensitised poeple they now don’t know what information they should be sharing and where.
