Early Warning Systems in Earth Management In addition to currently implemented measures for establishing an early tsunami warning system in the Indian Ocean, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has launched a portfolio of 11 research projects for developing and testing early warning systems for other natural geological catastrophes. The projects are carried out under the umbrella of the national R&D-Programme GEOTECHNOLOGIEN. The overall aim of the integrated projects is the development and deployment of integral systems in which terrestrial observation and measurement networks are coupled with satellite remote sensing techniques and interoperable information systems. All projects are carried out in strong collaboration between universities, research institutes and small/medium sized enterprises on a national and international level. The abstract volume contains the presentations given at the “Kick-Off-Meeting held in Karlsruhe, Germany, in October, 2007. The presentations reflect the multidisciplinary approach of the programme and offer a comprehensive insight into the wide range of research opportunities and applications.
