Superintendent’s Message What an incredible 2018-2019 school year! I am so proud of what our students and staff have accomplished. The strides we have made would not have been possible without the support of the dedicated educators and support staff who prepare our children each day for a successful future. I extend a heartfelt thanks and best wishes to those who are moving to new endeavors. Retiring administrators and teachers have earned our community’s gratitude. These educators dedication to the children of USD 231 is something of which they can be very proud. They have given their time and lives most generously to the school district, and we are greatly appreciative. We are already looking forward to the 2019-2020 school year. We will welcome over 50 new staff members to USD 231 and wish them the best of luck in their first year of education in our district. We are fortunate to have you and look forward to the excellent instruction you will provide to our students. Summer vacation is drawing to a close, so be sure to enjoy the remaining time with family and friends. Enjoy the last few dips in the pool, ball games, and camps. We look forward to seeing you in August as we start the journey of another successful school year.

Pam Stranathan Superintendent of Schools

Gardner Edgerton Takes Bold Step in Mental Health

The School Board for Unified School District 231 voted to approve a memorandum of understanding with Johnson County Mental Health Center for a full-time clinical coresponder embedded within the school district. The co-responder will work in the school district, but will be a full-time employee of Johnson County Mental Health Center. The program allows Johnson County Mental Health Center to provide immediate assistance to students in need during a crisis situation. The position will be filled in July 2019. “We are excited to be able to offer this support and service to our students and their families and our staff members. We are thankful for the relationship that has been developed between USD 231 and Johnson County Mental Health Center. By partnering together, we are better able to meet the needs of our community” said USD 231 Superintendent Pam Stranathan. The Johnson County Board of County Commissioners approved the memorandum of understanding on Thursday, May 2. The arrangement will be a one year pilot with the potential to expand to other school districts in the county if the data reflects the anticipated impact. The county will continue to develop and track key performance indicators to determine if the pilot is a success. “We are pleased to be able to partner with a school district in this way,” said Johnson County Mental Health Center Director Tim DeWeese, “It takes the community working together to end the stigma and start the necessary conversations about mental health in teens and adolescents.” The school board approved a partnership to support the position during the 2019 – 2020 school year. Johnson County Board of County Commissioners approved the rest of the funding for the position using both mental health funding sources and some county tax support. The Co-Responder Program began in 2011 with a pilot with the City of Olathe Police Department. Now, most communities in Johnson County have a co-responder embedded within their police department.

There are currently 372 seniors on task to graduate this year. The GEHS Counseling Department coordinates the local scholarship program and organizes the breakfast. Scholarships are among the most popular forms of securing funds needed to afford college. Gardner Edgerton High School Adds Emergency and Fire Program for the Fall In the Fall of 2019, Gardner Edgerton High School is getting bigger and better. The career pathway, Emergency and Fire Management Services will be offered for seniors who want to become nationally certified. For the class of 2020, some are starting the conversation of what they are going to do post high school. For those who want to become a firefighter, this program is for them. Students will be attending class and learning at Fire District #1 of Johnson County, right here in Gardner. District #1 Firefighters, Battalion Chief Aaron Winker and Captain Chris Russell have been working hard to get the station ready to begin class. “We look forward to being there for the students and

8 •

GARDNER EDGERTON HORIZON

help them prepare for the fire service”, Winker said. The program will focus on the prerequisites to getting hired. The goal is to prepare each student to take and pass the national firefighter exam along with obtaining their EMR certification. At the end of the program, students will obtain national certifications in Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2, HazMat Awareness, HazMat Operations, and Emergency Medical Responder. “These certifications are necessary to get hired in the metro area and they will give them the advantage of obtaining them while still in high school,’’ said Russell. Certified firefighters will teach the students fire behavior, fire fighting

skills, personal protective equipment, EMS care, and much more. When the seniors graduate, they can choose to advance their EMS training at a local community college to make themselves more valuable to local departments. The Gardner Edgerton School District is very excited to add this career pathway to the high school program. “This is a unique opportunity for our students and we are proud to partner with the fire department,’’ said Melissa McIntire, Coordinator of Student Support Services. Winkler and Russell both said, “We all take great pride in our jobs and we hope to instill that pride in the next generation.”

Presidential Honor Awards Students who complete a certain number of community service hours each year earns the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. Each of these recipients were awarded a congratulatory letter from President Trump and the Presidential Service Award Certificate. Volunteer Service is defined as any unpaid act to help others (outside of family). In addition, the service cannot be court-ordered. To be a recipient of this award, a student must complete 100 hours of service to others (in

one calendar year), log activities and hours and submit by the deadline. The Presidential Service Award program serves as an avenue to thank and honor American citizens who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service and encourage a sustained commitment to civil participation. Congratulations to these students for their volunteer service to our communities.

Students Offered Free After School Maker Sessions USD 231 has enjoyed the addition of the Technology Integration Specialist this school year. Dr. Tracy Platt has been an incredible resource in the area of the always changing technology world. Educators get technology tips, professional development and training on a weekly basis from the guidance of Dr. Platt. Staff are not the only ones who benefit, the students do as well. Dr. Platt has made two elementary tours by giving students an opportunity of participating in Maker Sessions. The

first session in the winter was making “Junk Bots” from recycled materials. In the spring, students were offered a Wiggle Bot after school class. Dr. Platt collarborated with Gardner Edgerton Youth & Community Programs to help with an online registration and roster management. Each class had to be limited to twenty students due to space and materials. “Once the word got out, classes filled up fast”, said Ryan Colston, GEYCP Supervisor. Each of the seven elementary schools hosted the event over a two week

span in April. Dr. Platt gave step-bystep instructions on how to build their Wiggle Bot to third and fourth graders. Students made the homemade robot by using a foam cup and markers. A small motor was programmed to make it move and by the end, the Wiggle Bots could make a colorful picture. Sessions at each building were at capacity with a total of 140 students benefiting from the after school program. Dr. Platt plans on hosting more Maker Sessions in the 2019-2020 school year and providing a little tech fun after school.
