Kids will work together to create their own batch of slime every day. We will work through the math of multiplying a recipe and converting the units for our big batch. Then students will measure and mix. Every day we will work with a different recipe and different amounts. After all of our hard work, every kid will bring home their own portion of the slime each day!
Bits and Bytes: Coding with Dash the Robot Students will explore robots, engineering, and basic coding through Dash the Robot. Students will learn how to make Dash move, follow a predetermined path, play a song, and dance. We will use the Wonder Workshop Apps for Dash the Robot.

Introduction to American Sign Language 1

In this class we will learn 150 of the most commonly used signs. They are broken into many different catagories. We will learn one category at a time and at the end of the course all words can be used together to form full sentences. We will do group activities and games to help retain the signs for each word.
Kitchen Science Not all science experiments require expensive or hard to find chemicals. We will be taking everyday ingredients and turning them into fun science experiments. Each day will have a different focus using basic ingredients and how they interact with each other.

This coding class is an introduction to the idea of computer programming; we can tell the computer what to do! We will need all of our problem solving skills to make our way through a class on code.org. Students will be encouraged to work together as problem solvers. We will also take a look at different problem solving strategies for when we get stuck. Maybe listening to music helps clear your mind. When kids leave this class, they will know more about computer programing and more about how to hit their own reset button.

Drawing and Painting Animals @ GEHS

Join Mrs. McCormick in the GEHS Art Room to learn how to draw and paint your favorite animals. We will be looking at the characteristics that make animals unique...practice sketching them in action, details, and creating texture. We will work with a variety of techniques and art materials including watercolors, pencil, colored pencil, and oil pastels. All supplies will be here for you...and you can take some home at end of the class! Projects will be based on materials, teaching techniques for realism, a variety of animals....and then tailored to students skill and interest. First drawings will be from photos...but may have some guest animals the last day. *Note: This course will be held at Gardner Edgerton High School.

In this class we will learn 150 of the most commonly used signs. They are broken into many different catagories. We will learn one category at a time and at the end of the course all words can be used together to form full sentences. We will do group activities and games to help retain the signs for each word.
Crime Scene Solvers Grades 5-8

Did you ever wonder about all those crime solving techniques that TV shows use? How do we match fingerprints and DNA? How long has a body been dead? Learn these techniques and much more in this laboratory based camp. Explore fingerprint matching, ink analysis, how fly larvae can tell us about a corpse, how DNA analysis works, and much more. At the end, students will analyze a crime scene, collect evidence, analyze it, and determine who committed the murder! Lots of chemistry, biology, and “figuring it out” in this fast paced STEM course.

Effective Communication Skills: Enhancing Non-Verbal and Verbal Skills

Effective communication skills are vital to interact with peers and adults around you and will be crucial to your future success. If a communicator's non-verbal cues and verbal message do not match, the listener can be confused. In addition, messages should be worded appropriately, depending on the context of the situation. This course will review the components of effective communication and scenarios will be role-played to demonstrate these skills. Modifying the message depending on who the listener is will also be practiced.

What’s for Dinner?

Many times your child may have asked, "What's for dinner?" After attending Cooking Camp your child will be able to answer this question on their own. Each day of our camp your child will be able to try a new recipe. They will become familiar with basic kitchen equipment and learn kitchen safety when using these tools. These may include: stove, oven, knife, blender, etc. This will be a fun opportunity to try new recipes and learn to cook!
String Art Do you want to create a unique piece of artwork or make a special gift for someone? This is the group for you! We will start by sanding and staining a 12x12 piece of wood. You will then get to choose a design or picture that you’d like to use. The design will be printed and taped to the wood. You’ll hammer nails around the outline and fill it in with colored string.

Allow Me to Introduce Myself: A Guide to Writing the College Admission Essay College application essays are one of the most important ways admissions and scholarship review committees get to know students. This class will teach students how to write strong, narrative, personal essays that reveal more than their transcript or letters of recommendation. Students will study examples of successful college admission essays and practice writing their own. By the end of the course, each student will have two essays that could work for most college applications.

Youth Theater Camp and Performance
Based on the classic animated film, Disney's 101 Dalmatians KIDS is a fur-raising adventure featuring Cruella De Vil, Disney's most outrageous villain, and 101 of the most adorable heroes to set their paws onstage. With a high-spirited score and lovable characters, this stage adaptation is certain to charm and delight all audiences. Pet owners, Roger and Anita, live happily in London with their Dalmatians, Pongo and Perdita, stalwart dogs devoted to raising their puppies. Everything is quiet until Anita's former classmate, the monstrous Cruella De Vil, plots to steal the puppies for her new fur coat. The Dalmatians rally all the dogs of London for a daring rescue of the puppies from Cruella and her bumbling henchmen. The show's adorable spotted dogs and larger-than-life villainess provide ample opportunities for creative costuming. With a highly expandable chorus, your stage could easily be filled with 101 budding performers. Kids Boot Camp GEYCP and nationally certified speed and conditioning coaches, Tyler Cordts (GEHS Head Wrestling Coach) and Joe Leiker (GEHS Head Girls Basketball Coach) are excited to work with future Blazers who are interested in trying new and exciting ways to improve their physical fitness. Sessions are geared toward building core muscle groups, mobility, balance, confidence, team work, and perseverance. Coaches Cordts, Leiker and GEHS Student Athletes will use various activities and equipment such as strength bands, jump ropes, agility ladders, speed cones, and body weight exercises to enhance your campers’ fitness potential.

Coach Radel is nationally certified in speed and conditioning. Coach Walters, GEHS science teacher is a movement expert. Both coaches are excited to put students grades 4-6 and 7-8 through four 1 hour sessions geared toward building agility, coordination, explosive movements, and proper technique. Activities include dynamic warm-ups, correct running form, proper jumping and landing techniques, speed drills, and fun games to bring it all together.

Building with the Barefoot Builder Hi, my name is Katee Smith. By day I am a stay-at-homemom to three wonderful kiddos, and by night I am the owner and operator of The Barefoot Builder LLC. I build custom furniture and teach woodworking classes of all kinds to all ages. I am a self-taught woodworker, and have been building furniture for about 6 years. I love the challenge of each new custom piece, but my passion lies in teaching others. I do home parties, work events, birthday parties, community events, and more! The possibilities are endless, so let's get building! Kids will be constructing the project with the guidance of the instructor.

Automotive Maintenance Workshop

Basic Welding Skills

This course will cover basic welding skills for anyone interested in learning how to use the tools in the welding trade. The three-hour class will cover basic safety and welding techniques demonstrated by the instructor and repeated by the students. Flux-Core and Solid Wire Mig Welding, Arc Welding, and Tig Welding will be covered in the class. Students will need to wear jeans, closed toe shoes, and a long sleeve, 100% cotton shirt. 2019 USD 231 Summer Programming - Frequently Asked Questions Q: Where is my class located? A: Classes are located at Wheatridge Middle School, unless noted. Some of the Enrichment for Youth courses will be held at GEHS due to supplies needed for the course. Athletic Camps have their location with the information. Q: If the classes are full, can my student be added to the wait list? A: The summer program courses do have wait lists. The wait list criteria are based on content, facility, equipment and teacher availability. For additional information about the wait lists, contact (913) 856-2009. Q: What are the fees? A: Fees will vary per program. Fees are listed in each program description. Q: How are fees collected? A: Fees can be paid when you enroll by credit card, cash, or check. If paying by check or cash, select that option and mail or drop off at district office: GEYCP 231 E. Madison Street. Gardner, Kansas. 66030. Enrollment is not complete until these fees are paid and students may not attend until fees are paid in full. Q: What is the last date to drop the class and still receive a refund?
