EXPLORE

EXPLORE SAN DIEGO San Diego might not have sleigh bells and snow-covered grounds, but we can’t think of a better place to start off the New Year and enjoy the winter season. The beautiful weather allows us to enjoy the sun and surf year-round, and with 70 miles of beautiful coastline and a wide variety of terrain (think beaches, deserts, and mountains), it can be difficult to decide where to start. You’ll find maps in the back of the magazine, and this quick and easy guide to help you explore this amazing area!

SAN DIEGO CITY MAP

NORTH COUNTY

Pacific Beach (aka “PB”): We sometimes refer to it as Party Beach because of its fun bars and restaurants, which are perfect for party hopping.

Carlsbad: A family-focused community home to LEGOLAND®, The Flower Fields, and the Green Dragon Tavern & Museum, a stunning 22,000-square foot replica of Boston’s original tavern which also houses a revolutionary war museum. Make sure to visit Carlsbad Village for great shopping and dining, especially at Gregorio’s, one of our favorite spots!

Mission Bay: This is where you’ll find SeaWorld® San Diego as well as walking paths, picnics, bonfires, and beach volleyball. There’s also plenty of fun for families with small children both in the water and on the beach - no big waves to worry about here! La Jolla: This is an upscale area where you will find luxurious hotels, spas, shopping, fine dining, and amazing views of the Pacific Ocean. It’s also home to the Birch Aquarium. Mission Beach: Home to the Giant Dipper, the historic wooden rollercoaster built in 1925, and Belmont Park, our version of the East Coast’s Coney Island. Old Town: The birth place of California, it’s filled with restaurants, shopping, and numerous free museums. It’s a great place to really learn about the history of San Diego.

EXPLORE SOUTH COUNTY Ocean Beach (aka “OB”): Filled with beach bungalows and cottages, you’ll find a relaxed bohemian crowd who prides themselves in the variety of small businesses and locally-owned establishments. OB’s waterfront is known as Dog Beach where dogs can enjoy being leash-free 24 hours a day. Downtown/GasLamp: Historic district in the heart of Downtown with nightclubs, lounges, live music venues, and plenty of restaurants like Brian’s 24. You’ll find Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres baseball team, and the Convention Center located downtown. Hillcrest: A friendly neighborhood with numerous locally-owned businesses like boutiques, bars, clubs, restaurants and thrift stores. It’s also supportive of the gay and lesbian community and has a high population of LGBT. Coronado Island: An affluent resort city which is home to Hotel Del, one of the oldest and largest of all wooden buildings in California and considered a national and California historical landmark. Coronado Beach was rated #1 in the US in 2012 according Dr. Beach, and Orange Avenue is our favorite place to take a stroll. There are also more retired admirals per square foot on the island than anywhere in the world. Balboa Park: The historic park offers 1,200 acres of beautiful open spaces, gardens, museums, theaters, amazing architecture, and of course, the worldfamous San Diego Zoo. Point Loma (also includes Shelter Island and Harbor Island): This is a great spot to go sport fishing or to explore the beautiful marina filled with “super yachts.” It’s also home to the Cabrillo National Monument. While you’re there, grab a bite to eat at Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern! There are a few public transportation options to help you get around to all of these great places. You can ride The COASTER, which travels along the coast from San Diego to Oceanside, and hop on the trolleys to get around downtown San Diego. FEATURED TAP INTO THE SD CRAFT BEER SCENE By Pierre H. Charmasson

“Build it… and they will come.” This is the line made famous by Kevin Costner in the 1989 block-buster film “Field of Dreams.” For twin brothers Kevin and Kyle Conover, it became their mantra and a reality in February of 2006 when they opened the Tap Room in the heart of Pacific Beach on Garnet Avenue.

Watch a Video About SD Tap Room

The craft beer craze in San Diego was in its infancy, and they knew the timing was right for an establishment that focused strictly on San Diego microbreweries. They certainly were right, and they have profited from their timing because San Diego is now known as The Beer Capital of the U.S. with 87 licensed craft breweries and brew pubs in the county.

Upon my visit I was treated to an assortment of comfort foods, including their famous Lobster Mac & Cheese made with sautéed garlic, chunks of fresh lobster, chopped tomatoes, brandy cream sauce, cheese and topped with bread crumbs. Once that was devoured, I sampled the White Stone, one of the 18 stone-baked pizzas, which is the hottest seller on the menu according to Kevin, the owner. It’s a simple, thin-crust pie coated with roasted garlic, parmesan cheese, ricotta cheese, yet no tomato sauce, making this pizza light and pleasing to the palate.

The award-winning Ale Smith Brewing Company and Stone Brewing Company call San Diego home, as well as favorites such as Ballast Point, Karl Strauss and the Green Flash Brewery. You can find them all at the Tap Room along with numerous other San Diego micro-beers.

Their two-sided menu is full of many wonderful options you can choose from to fill you up while you’re exploring San Diego. The appetizers range from your basic buffalo wings and calamari to more playful starters such as garlic knots, a ballpark pretzel, and the delicious seared ahi.

Best of all, there is a beer for the budget-conscious or the true beer connoisseur ranging from $5 a pint up to $37 for a 22 oz. bottle. On a recent visit, I couldn’t resist the temptation and enjoyed a five-pack taster.

If you prefer healthier options, then you can choose from the Fresh Greens menu which includes eight different salads. The Tap Room gives you the option to make your salad into a wrap, and for a few extra bucks they will throw in your choice of chicken, steak, mahi mahi or shrimp. With a dozen sandwiches and subs to choose from you can bet there is something for everyone.

The flight consisted of the Hop Highway from Belching Beaver Brewing Company in Vista, Calif., which is a slightly cloudy brew with the smell of citrus and a honey after note; Hop 15 from Port Brewing Company in San Marcos, Calif., which is a medium gold and brash brew with 10 percent alcohol and certainly the most bitter of the bunch; Solis Occasus, a clear brew with a hint of mango and nuts from Hess Brewing Company in North Park, a historic neighborhood in San Diego; Sculpin from Ballast Point Brewing Company in San Diego, a true IPA filled with a hoppy flavor; and for dessert the Cali Creamin’ Vanilla Cream Ale from Mother Earth Brewing Company in Vista, Calif., where of course, the name says it all. Today the Tap Room is a popular, dogfriendly, beach community hangout boasting 50 taps pouring 90 percent of San Diego’s micro-beers. To complement the Tap Room’s wide variety of craft beers, you’ll find a full menu of inventive takes on pub fare.

If you are a sports fan, you will enjoy the Tap Room’s array of 12 big-screen televisions and their 10-foot projection screen. You can sip your suds and enjoy the Southern California beach vibe while you chill out in their big, spacious booths, or just belly up to their rustic bar. Being a San Diego haunt means they love their Chargers and their Padres, but don’t fret. They also carry the full satellite sports package and are happy to serve up whatever you want to watch. Stop in for happy hour from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. throughout the week, Mondays through Fridays 11 a.m. to 1 a.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. sdtaproom.com Remember to drink responsibly. Dining with a View at Pacifica Del Mar By: Dawn-Renee Rice San Diego boasts some of the best seafood and fine-dining restaurants around, usually with amazing ocean views. Pacifica Del Mar is no exception. This award-winning restaurant has a passion about seafood, and it shows in their signature dishes and raw seafood bar which features the finest and freshest from local purveyors. They are recipients of the prestigious Gold Medallion for “Best Seafood Dining in San Diego,” and the Wine Spectators “Award of Excellence,” with good reason. Their vibrant bar is also a great place to unwind and relax with a drink while feasting your eyes on the spectacular coastal views…and the food, of course! The staff provides impeccable service, and the menu offers delicious meals for your dining pleasure. On a recent visit, the Getaway Team indulged in tasty offerings from appetizers to dessert. We started out with the Baked Pacific Oysters, made with spinach, leeks, parmesan and gratinee, and the Ahi Tuna Tartar, which came with a tasty avocado mousse, mango, pomegranate gelee and sesame cracker. Our appetizers were complemented by wine, martinis and their flavorful chipotle margarita. According to Chef Chris Powell, their menu offers classics that never change and a market menu that rotates seasonally. At the time of our visit, they were offering their anniversary special, which some of us decided to order. The special consisted of a light and refreshing beet salad, and a filling and delicious bacon-wrapped halibut complemented by a tasty broth with bits of onion and leeks. The rest of

Watch a Video About Pacifica Del Mar our team decided on either the decadent Sugar-Spiced Salmon, accompanied by Chinese beans, mustard sauce and fluffy, garlic mashed potatoes; and the Seared “Rare” Ahi with ginger soy butter, marinated shiitakes and baby carrots, and a sticky rice cake. We all decided to share dessert, so we opted for their Dessert Trio and Ice Cream Sandwich Tasting samplers. The Dessert Trio consisted of petite preparations of crème brulee, a lemon tart and a bon bon, while the Ice Cream Sandwich Tasting included carrot cake, rocky road, peanut butter and vanilla bean gelato. It was the perfect ending to a fantastic dining experience at an amazing restaurant that offers wonderful views and a fine-dining feel. But, don’t let the white-clothed tables fool you. They offer budget-friendly prices and a family-friendly atmosphere. In fact, you can order a two-course sunset supper until 6 p.m. for $23.75*, which you truly won’t find anywhere else. The locals have frequented this restaurant for over 20 years, where fresh seafood is served with a modern touch and an amazing wine selection is offered to those who like to imbibe. Some restaurants have great food, others have a great view, but this is one place where you can enjoy both. pacificadelmar.com *As of this posting and not including tax. Call to confirm.

Tavern+Bowl

San Diego is known for having a variety of restaurants to choose from, and it’s nearly impossible to try them all in one visit. So, we’ve taken the guess work out of it for you. Check out these three great places to dine, from authentic Mexican cuisine to a destination experience where you can enjoy gourmet food while bowling with your friends and family.

Authentic Mexican Food in the Heart of Old Town

Hawaiian-Style Cuisine with a View

Located in historic Old Town and nestled among the historic landmarks along San Diego Avenue, you’ll find Café Coyote (cafecoytoeoldtown. com), which has been awarded the title of “San Diego’s Best Mexican Restaurant” for nearly eight consecutive years. It is the ultimate food destination for any occasion, whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner. They offer wonderful menu options with an authentic flavor, complemented by tasty craft cocktails and more than 120 bottles of tequila to choose from.

Wondering where you can find an ocean front view and incredible seafood without a reservation or hour-long wait? Wonderland Ocean Pub (wonderlandob.com) in Ocean Beach has spectacular views for every seat in the house. Whether you’re here for an intimate dinner, or just wandered in from the beach, they can easily accommodate you. The menu is incredibly diverse, incorporating Hawaiian-style cuisine into many of their dishes, and specials are served every day of the week.

The gorgeous grotto-style seating and outdoor patio area are perfect for date nights, family outings, or even a solo night on the town. After your meal, we recommend stopping by The Old Town Candy Store next door to end your meal on a sweet note. We suggest: The Sunrise Quesadilla for breakfast accompanied by a tasty craft cocktail.

Cafe Coyote

14 WINTER 2015

And, as the San Diego sun falls behind the ocean every evening, the staff passes out shots to everyone, which is free for bar patrons and $3 for restaurant patrons. At sundown, a giant bell is rung and the entire establishment hoots and hollers while toasting one another. We suggest: The fried scallops and basically the entire appetizer menu.

Family-Friendly Dining Destination When you think of the word “tavern,” you probably think of a small dining area with a dinky bar and a fireplace glowing softly in the corner. That’s not the case at Tavern+Bowl (tavernbowl. com); in fact, it’s quite the opposite. It’s a one-stop, family-friendly dining destination experience with three locations offering gourmet food, specialty cocktails and 12 upscale bowling lanes. Their gourmet scratch kitchen, and gluten-free, paleo, vegetarian and vegan options keep bowlers coming back...just for the food. Stop by for happy hour throughout the week, or visit on Tuesdays for their incredible Taco Tuesday Special, where you can order delicious street tacos for $2, a beer for $2.50 or tequila for $3. We suggest: Their menu changes seasonally, so be prepared to enjoy anything you order. Contributions by Madison Teague

By: Madison Teague If you visit Oceanside and stroll along the historic wooden pier or the expansive shoreline, you’re bound to work up an appetite. But there is no need to head all the way downtown for dinner and drinks. Instead, you’ll want to experience Masters Kitchen Cocktail, the most up-and-coming beachside eatery. Masters opened its doors in June of 2014, and is located along South Coast Highway only a few blocks from the beach and the Oceanside Sprinter Station. The warm and inviting ambiance is perfect for a romantic first date, or a post beach-day cocktail. The entrance is a spacious, covered patio, lined with cozy lounge couches. It’s the perfect spot to relax, wait for your party, watch sporting events, and even order dinner. The atmosphere is crisp and raw, and something you would only find in North Park or the Gaslamp Quarter. You can have a seat at their gorgeous bar, make some friends at a communal table, or enjoy their intimate dining area. Although their vibe is incredibly trendy, it’s the menu that deserves a double take. Everything from the appetizers to the craft cocktails are charmingly decadent with a creative flare. The ingenious mastermind behind the menu is Chef Christopher Gallo, a classically-trained pastry chef who has used his creative kitchen artistry in restaurants like Mr. A’s and Cucina Urbana, to name a few.

Each item on the menu is delightfully unique. After tasting the Sherry Marinated Fig Cristini, I knew I was in for a delicious ride. Another must-try on the appetizer menu is the Shrimp and Leek Crispy Dumplings. Usually, dumplings are heavy on filler, but that’s not the case with this dish. Last, but most certainly not least was the Sea Bass. I urge you to try this culinary masterpiece. The fish is draped over melted eggplant and drizzled in an exquisite bean sauce. As I sipped the last drop of my incredibly refreshing Rosemary Lemonade Cocktail, I came to the conclusion that the menu at Masters Kitchen Cocktail is unlike anything I have ever experienced in San Diego. And, it might even be my new personal favorite. mastersoceanside.com Editor’s Note: The menu is seasonal, and items mentioned in the article may not be available when you visit. Get into the After Hours Spirit If you’re in search of a unique, entertaining, and fun night out in San Diego, fall down the rabbit hole into Vin de Syrah Spirit & Wine Parlor. The entrance isn’t easy to find, but it is well worth the trouble. After descending a stairway leading you into the labyrinth of the Gaslamp District, make your way to a seemingly dead end of ivy-covered walls where you must grope blindly for the hidden entrance. But take notice! Your quest to find the secret door is being transmitted to large TVs inside the bar. Once you earn your way into Syrah, you enter a magical world of oversized chairs, creative fixtures and garden walls that make you feel like you have just arrived in Wonderland. A huge selection of wines and cocktails are available at the large bar, which looms over a sexy lounge area, velvet booths, a giant “private” table, and what will later become a stage and dance floor. During this hour, you will finally understand why wine and cheese is such a popular pairing when done right! After the wine tasting, the lights dim, and from your exclusive VIP vantage point you have front row seats for a wonderfully campy tribute to the Burlesque Era. Three wonderful, talented, tastefully attired, yet sexy, women proceed to put on an incredible song and dance routine for the entire bar. Uniquely San Diego: Whale Watching By: Dawn-Renee Rice During the fall and winter months, locals have the privilege of witnessing an interesting and unique event – watching the whales migrate south for the winter. Known as “whale watching,” many of us head out on the water in search of a view of these magnificent creatures. From December to April, more than 20,000 gray whales make the arduous 10,000-mile round-trip journey from Alaska to the warm waters of Baja California. On their way, they pass by San Diego, allowing us the opportunity to see this migration up close. If you want to get in on the viewing action, we have several options for you to choose from. Adventure RIB Rides offers you a fun and exhilarating excursion out on the water in a Navy SEAL Team Rigid Inflatable boat (RIB). Because of their speed, you get to the wildlife quicker, and the low profile of the boat allows you to get closer to the aquatic wildlife as compared to the larger, 100-plus passenger boats. While you’re blasting through the Pacific Ocean, feeling the wind whip through your hair and the sun shining down, you might spot a whale or two. Don’t believe me? Check out our video and watch as the Getaway Team spots a whale so close to the boat, it feels like they can reach out and touch it. Julian San Diego is popular because of its temperate climate, but some people miss the feeling of “real seasons” and winter snow when they come to San Diego. Fortunately, we are located right next to the mountain town of Julian. Go during the coldest winter months, and you can walk around this quaint town while enjoying light snowfall. Don’t forget to pick up one of Julian’s famous pies at the Julian Pie Company. julianpie.com

Big Bear Just because it’s sunny outside doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a full “winter” experience. We are only about two-and-a-half hours away from popular Big Bear Mountain Ski Resorts. You can spend all day in the snow skiing and snowboarding. Lessons for beginners and equipment rentals are available through the resort. After spending a day or two in the snow, you can return to the warm San Diego sunshine in just a matter of hours!
