EXPLORE SAN DIEGO Fall is a beautiful time thanks to our famous weather. You can still enjoy many outdoor activities, such as cruising the bay or golfing, even after the leaves have changed. With the holidays quickly approaching, shopping for the perfect gift is probably at the top of your list of things to do. Don’t worry; we have you covered with an extensive guide to the area’s best shopping. You’ll also discover some of our favorite places to find the tastiest food, whether it’s Italian, seafood or a home-cooked meal. The first thing to do on your visit here is to start thinking like a local. San Diego is made up of small surrounding cities with their own distinct personalities, and knowing the difference between downtown and say, Carlsbad, can determine where you want to go and what you want to do. It may sound a little confusing, but don’t worry, we have maps in the back of the magazine and videos highlighting specific towns so you can start exploring like a local in no time. With 70 miles of beautiful coastline and a wide variety of terrain (think beaches, deserts, and mountains), it can be difficult to decide where to start. Here’s a quick and easy guide to help you explore this amazing area!
SAN DIEGO CITY Pacific Beach (aka “PB”): We sometimes refer to it as Party Beach because of its fun bars and restaurants, which are perfect for party hopping. Mission Bay: This is where you’ll find SeaWorld® San Diego as well as walking paths, picnics, bonfires, and beach volleyball. There’s also plenty of fun for families with small children both in the water and on the beach - no big waves to worry about here! La Jolla: This is an upscale area where you will find luxurious hotels, spas, shopping, fine dining, amazing views of the Pacific Ocean, and the Birch Aquarium. Mission Beach: Home to the Giant Dipper, the historic wooden rollercoaster built in 1925, and Belmont Park, our version of the East Coast’s Coney Island. Old Town: The birth place of California, it’s filled with restaurants, shopping, and numerous free museums. It’s a great place to really learn about the history of San Diego.

Encinitas (also includes neighboring areas Leucadia and Cardiff by the Sea): An area of relaxed surf cities with a great variety of beaches, cool and funky shops and boutiques along Highway 101, a vibrant surf culture, yogi’s doing yoga, vegetarian restaurants and boho-chic hipsters. SOUTH COUNTY Ocean Beach (aka “OB”): Filled with beach bungalows and cottages, you’ll find a relaxed bohemian crowd who prides themselves in the variety of small businesses and locally-owned establishments. OB’s waterfront is known as Dog Beach where dogs can enjoy being leash-free 24 hours a day. Downtown/GasLamp: Historic district in the heart of Downtown with plenty of restaurants, nightclubs, lounges and live music venues. You’ll find Petco Park, home of the San Die go Padres baseball team, and the Convention Center located downtown. Hillcrest: A friendly neighborhood with numerous locally-owned businesses like boutiques, bars, clubs, restaurants and thrift stores. It’s also supportive of the gay and lesbian community and has a high population of LGBT. Coronado Island: An affluent resort city which is home to Hotel Del, one of theoldest and largest of all wooden buildings in California and considered a national and California historical landmark. Coronado Beach was rated #1 in the US in 2012 according Dr. Beach, and Orange Avenue is our favorite place to take a stroll. There are also more retired admirals per square foot on the island than anywhere in the world. Balboa Park: The park offers 1,200 acres of beautiful open spaces, gardens, museums, theaters, amazing architecture, and of course, the world famous San Diego Zoo. Point Loma (also includes Shelter Island and Harbor Island): This is a great spot to go sport fishing or to explore the beautiful marina filled with “super yachts.” It’s also home to the Cabrillo National Monument. Mission Valley (aka Hotel Circle): Offers great shopping at the Fashion Valley Mall and is the place to watch the San Diego Chargers play football at Qualcomm Stadium. Chula Vista: The location of the Sleep Train Amphitheatre, the U.S Olympic Training Center, and the Living Coast Discovery Center – perfect for a family outing.
Mission Beach Ocean Beach Sunset Cliffs Imperial Beach
There are a few public transportation options to help you get around to all of these great places. You can ride The COASTER, which travels along the coast from San Diego to Oceanside, and hop on the trolleys to get around downtown San Diego.
While you’re here, visit our blog at SanDiego.PlanMyGetaway.Com to stay up-to-date on where to eat and play. ONE-OF-A-KIND ARTWORK BY SCOTT JACOBS By: Dawn-Renee Rice
Scott Jacobs, the first officially-licensed artist for Harley-Davidson Motor Company since 1993, has an amazing ability to bring art to life using a special technique called photo realism. Whether you're a wine connoisseur, classic car collector, or a Harleyriding enthusiast, Jacobs has the talent to create stunning pieces showcased in his gallery and online. In fact, his artwork is so detailed most people think they are viewing an actual photograph and not an original Scott Jacobs painting. Jacobs' work is seen in over 90 countries and his work is sold on 107 cruise ships around the world. Celebrities such as Jay Leno, Robert Patrick, Pat Simmons of the Doobie Brothers and Gary Puckett are collectors of his work, as was Michael Jackson before his passing in 2009. Jacobs has become a celebrity artist in his own right, and some of his pieces have sold for more than $165,000. Even though Jacobs is licensed by Harley Davidson, he paints several different genres. Thanks to his amazing talent, many people can’t believe that all the art is from the same artist. If you're looking for a beautiful wine painting to hang next to your wine rack, or car art to hang in your man cave, why not check out Jacobs' gallery?
With items ranging from original works of art, high-quality limited-edition prints for as little as $290, limited-edition memorabilia such as shirts, t-shirts, tin signs, and puzzles, there’s something for everyone and for any budget. Jacobs has more than 100 limited-edition, handsigned prints and art canvases in his portfolio. You'll find exactly what you need to add to your art collection, decorate your home or get the perfect gift for the holidays or special occasion. He offers art on canvas licensed for Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, HarleyDavidson, Corvette and much more! If you’re a wine enthusiast, you can find paintings of your favorite wines such as Opus, Silver Oak, Dolce, Luce and many others. Jacobs is also known for his stunning “women in masks” paintings, which are extremely popular. You can also meet Jacobs in person, as he is often at his studio in San Elijo Hills. Aside from his studio, he and his family operate a gallery and framing center, and offer 35+ years of experience in the framing business. Stop by Scott Jacobs Studio Art Gallery & Framing while you’re here, and bring home a one-of-a-kind piece of art from one of the best living artists in the U.S. today. scottjacobsstudio.com

JULIAN: The Perfect Fall Getaway By: Elisa Boorman Contributions by: Stephanie Bashaw, Alisa Kerr and Hannah Johnston If there’s a place in San Diego County perfect for a getaway, it’s the charming town of Julian, an official California Historic Landmark that comes alive during the fall season. Locals and tourists flock to nearby orchards to pick their own fall harvest and to visit Julian’s Main Street for comfort food and a slice of world-famous apple pie. For the outdoorsy adventure seekers, there are nearby camp sites, hiking trails and plenty of other activities for the whole family. On any given autumn afternoon, warm apple cider is the ticket. You can even make your own; just outside Julian are a number of u-pick apple orchards that let you come and pluck from their bountiful selection of the ripe and juicy fruit. You can find the list of orchards and dates/times available for picking by visiting the Julian Chamber of Commerce website at julianca.com/orchards. There are also a number of pumpkin patches for your jack-o’lanterns and pumpkin pie. Or, you can spend the afternoon browsing the specialty shops and boutiques in the heart of Julian searching for the perfect gift or souvenir. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, be sure to stop for lunch at Miner’s Diner, a classic spot with unique décor, friendly local servers, and a menu that could feed a whole team of miners with barbecue pulled-pork sandwiches and giant burgers. Let us also not forget the real reason San Diegans flock to the streets of Julian year-round; the warm apple pie. Julian locals have been churning out these baked delights for years, and

they may even compete for the “world’s best” title. You can see more than one sign in shop fronts that read “World’s Best Apple Pie.” We recommend Mom’s Pies and Julian Pie Co. for a slice of classic or crumb, where you will find out what heaven á la mode tastes like. You can also indulge your palate with great-tasting wine at Blue Door Winery or Witch Creek Winery. Blue Door harvests their grapes from the Central Coast of California, and offer tastings in their Tasting Room, which was renovated from historic livery stables in the heart of Julian. Witch Creek Winery offers you generous samples of five different California wines for less than $10, and boasts a great location on Main Street. The activities around this quaint little town are endless with its close proximity to the Cleveland National Forest, Cuyamaca Rancho State Park and the Volcan Mountains. You can camp overnight in one of the many campsites in the State Park, or spend the day hiking the Laguna Mountain Range within the park. Saddle up on the other end of town at Julian Stables, and you can ride horses along scenic trails to see the beautiful red, orange, and gold fall leaves. They always say that you can find some of the greatest joys (and food) in the least expected places, and Julian would be one place you definitely don’t want to overlook.
Enjoy a casual, family-friendly community complete with miles of wide, sandy beaches, a Cape Codstyle Harbor Village, a 1,942 foot wooden pier and rich arts and cultural venues. Oceanside makes the perfect backdrop for community events ranging from cultural festivals, concerts in the park and a weekly farmer’s market. From beach cafes to local breweries and farm-to-table favorites, Oceanside
is home to a variety of one-of-a-kind dining options perfect for the entire family.Stop by the California Welcome Center in Oceanside for maps, souvenirs and discount attraction tickets.

Ballast Point Brewing Company By: Marci Pascua When you think about San Diego, you think about sun, sand, and surf. But if you really dig deep into what is shaping San Diego these days, it’s the craft beer. San Diego has become a mecca for some of the best craft beers in the United States and among those top breweries is Ballast Point Brewing Company. Jack White, thefounder of Ballast Point Brewery, began brewing beer out of his backyard while he was in college. Because he enjoyed the process so much, he opened up Home Brew Mart in 1992, which is still in operation. Upon meeting Yuseff Cherney, a fellow craft beer enthusiast, Ballast Point Brewing was born. Ballast Point Brewing has made its way onto the map as one of the top breweries in the country, and certainly for its most prized craft beer, Sculpin. To date, Ballast Point has created over 50 types of beers, but only sells a handful year round. If you visit one of their tasting rooms at Old Grove Road, Home Brew Mart or India Street, you’re bound to sample something unique and worth writing home about. Among the three facilities run by Ballast Point, the location at India Street offers great brews and a kitchen, so if you love Ballast Point brews in liquid form, you’ll equally enjoy their tasty bites. While everything on the menu isn’t made with beer as an ingredient, every appetizer and entree is created with your taste buds in mind, and should be paired with a delicious Ballast Point brew, of course. The dining space is big enough for any occasion, and the large bar is perfect for hanging with your buddy or a significant other. If you’re curious about any of the brews, snag someone with a Ballast Point T-shirt and ask away. We also encourage you to take a tour of the facility at India Street or Old Grove if you enjoy learning more about Ballast Point and their brewing process. Everyone who works at Ballast Point is highly knowledgeable, and you’re guaranteed to walk out feeling like an expert of craft beer (and possibly fishing too). Nearly every one of their brews is either named after a fish or part of a water vessel, so it only makes sense that they have awardwinning fishing teams to represent Ballast Point. And, if there is anything else that San Diego is famous for, it’s fishing. So while you’re visiting America’s Finest City, stop in to any one of the three Ballast Point Brewing locations and enjoy a frosty craft beer. Or, visit their India Street location for a basket of PB&J chicken wings or a Brisket French Dip; it’s likely to be the best meal you’ll have on vacation. ballastpoint.com
