Plan Your GETAWAY

Our local team is made up of a variety of ages and backgrounds working together to help you have the perfect vacation. We will never send you to a “tourist trap” because we personally explore and share what the locals love to do. Most of us were born, raised and lived here our entire lives. We love everything that the area has to offer and are thrilled to share our experiences with you.

What makes our magazine completely different is VIDEO! Grab your smartphone or tablet and scan our “codes” to WATCH Margi and Jeff in action around the county. We’ll take you on a tour of some of our favorite things to do in San Diego. Our promise is…We won’t ask you to spend your money where we won’t spend ours. That’s why we personally visit and review every place we recommend.

Meet Your GETAWAY Hosts! MARGI BLASH ->>>>>>>> I grew up in Orange County before attending the University of Southern California. After graduation, I worked as an entertainment reporter/TV Host interviewing celebrities on the red carpet for People Magazine, Hollywood.com and UsWeekly to name a few. But, my true passion has always been traveling. I’m blessed to have had the opportunity to travel and explore the different food and cultures around the world and even received my frequent flyer number at only six months old. I’m so lucky to call San Diego home with my wonderful husband Nick as well as our daughter Georgia Rose who was born on April 1st. Summer has always been my favorite season, but I especially love to visit the Del Mar Track, cheer on the Padres and enjoy the beautiful sunsets with my family. JEFF KRAPF ->>>>>>>> I like to think of myself as having personality, personality, personality! I love to try anything and everything at least once-sometimes twice. Born in Central California, I moved to San Diego in 2000 and traveled to every major city in the country at least twice as a TV Host for multiple networks and local TV shows. I’ve been a brand spokesman for some of the biggest brands in the world, and emceed for some of the biggest sports and lifestyle events in the U.S., such as the Super Bowl, the Final Four and our very own San Diego Padres baseball team. With summer now staring us in the face, people from all over the world are flocking to this wonderful city of ours. The stadium for Padres games will be rockin', Balboa Park will be flooded with visitors and the beaches will be packed. Here's a quick tip - if you’re headed down to the beaches think of an alternative way to travel once you get there. You can rent bicycles, Segway’s or maybe street legal golf carts. These are great ways to beat the tough parking problems most will face and a great way to enjoy getting around the area. See you at the beach!" getaway san diego

HERE ARE ADDITIONAL (AND IMPORTANT) WAYS TO STAY SAFE AT THE BEACH: • Learn how to swim before going in the water, and always swim only when lifeguards are present. • Have younger children and very inexperienced swimmers wear life jackets. • Always apply sunscreen (especially on the little ones) even if it’s overcast in order to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, and reapply every two hours. It’s especially important to reapply if you’ve been in the water or sweating! Remember, the sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. • Drink a lot of water. Just because you’re surrounded by the ocean doesn’t mean you can’t get dehydrated. Many beaches do not have water fountains, so pack accordingly!

By: Carianne Steinman Contributor: Sherry Rosner Special Thanks to Krista Johnson

• Never dive head first into the water – there may be rocks hidden just below the surface. • Avoid patches of plants and leave the wild animals alone.

Although our beaches are tons of fun, any outdoor activity has its risks. The same things that make the Pacific Ocean beautiful – its size, waves, and wildlife – can also create some hazards. But don’t worry; there are plenty of ways to stay safe!

RIP CURRENTS Did you know that roughly 80% of lifeguard rescues at the beach are due to rip currents? Rip currents, also known as rip tides, are caused when waves break strongly in some areas and weaker in others. This action creates fast-moving narrow belts of water offshore. The speed of these currents can move up to eight feet per second, which is twice as fast as Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps! Rip currents are found at surf beaches and near fixed structures such as jetties and piers. If you feel a strong pull at your feet, you could be in a rip current and may want to move. If you do find yourself caught in a rip current, don’t try to swim directly towards the shore – this will tire you out. Instead, you need to swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current. You can then safely swim back to shore. The best way to stay safe from rip currents is to swim where lifeguards are present and to listen to their instructions at all times. Even the smallest waves can pack quite a punch so remember to never swim alone, to stay close to shore as much as possible, and to always respect the power of the ocean.

• Shuffle your feet when walking in the water to warn stingrays that you are coming, giving them a chance to swim away. • If you do get injured at the beach, tell the nearest lifeguard so they can help you with first aid.

GETAWAY TIPS: • Pack a bottle of baby powder to brush sand off your feet easily. • Alcohol is prohibited at all San Diego beaches. • Pay attention to the flags. • Pay attention to the signs of swim or surf specific areas. • When applying sunscreen, don’t forget your ears, hands and the tops of your feet. • Wear hats and sunglasses. • Bring extra toilet paper or wipes. • Check if dogs are allowed on your beach before you go, and please do not leave them in a hot car! • Check the daily weather forecast for the UV index. It is often overcast at the beaches, but the UV index can be higher than normal at those times. • You can check the local surf report by calling 619-221-8824 or visiting surflook.com.

TIP FROM OUR LOCAL LIFEGUARDS: • Use fins on your feet to help if you are out on a board or swimming. • If you are out with a boogie board and get caught in the rip current, do not abandon the board. (Some people panic and throw the board away and try to swim straight to shore.) You will get tired and could possibly drown. Don’t leave the board, stay on top, try and swim parallel and wave your arms for help.

LOTS OF LIVING CREATURES :

• Rip currents usually look different and can be identified by a sandy brown swirly color.

Jellyfish… if you get stung, remember to not touch it and to put vinegar on it.

• If you are not a strong swimmer we suggest you stay in waist or knee deep water. Make sure you can always touch the ground.

Stingrays… it will sting (hence their name), but try to stay calm to keep the pain from intensifying. Treat the area with a lot of hot of water as soon as possible. Since it can get infected, urgent care could be your best bet. Sharks… yes, they are out there, but they usually don’t come close to shore. Always be aware of your surroundings and don’t venture too far out into the ocean. Dolphins… they love to play in the waves, just like we do! You will more than likely see many of these friendly creatures while enjoying our beautiful beaches. Take some time to enjoy watching them.

GetawaySanDiego.com to view our event calendar

• Do not swim in clothes; they can wear you down and make you tired quickly. Wear appropriate swimwear instead. • Shells are fine to bring home, but please don’t disrupt our natural habitat. • While out on the water, give your kids something on the beach to focus on in case they drift too far away from you (for example, a large beach umbrella). • The ocean is a shared space: flags are there to separate swimmers from surfers. Surfers might not see you and run into you with their boards, so please be mindful of where you are at all times. • Keep an eye on children all the time! getaway san diego
