hinese medicine is the best option for your health because it’s a natural form of medicine free from the nasty side effects associated with Western (pharmaceutical) Medicine. Acupuncture uses the body’s own energy and directs this healing energy to the body part via an acupuncture needle. Traditional acupuncture is based on ancient Chinese theories of the flow of Qi (energy) and Xue (blood) through distinct meridians or pathways that cover the body somewhat like the nerves and blood vessels do. There is nothing more fundamental to Chinese medicine than understanding the concept of Qi (pronounced “chee”). Qi has variously been translated as “vital energy” or “life force”; however, it is impossible to capture the concept fully in one English word or phrase. Qi has best been described by Ted Kaptchuk a well respected Western practitioner of Chinese medicine as “matter on the verge of becoming energy, or energy at the point of materialising.”
What is Acupuncture
Acupuncture is the insertion of fine sterile needles into the body at specific points shown to be effective in the treatment of specific health problems and diseases. These points are chosen according to the individual needs of the patient and which symptoms and signs that they present with at the clinic. The essence of Chinese medicine lies in the skill of the practitioner in modifying and fine tuning the treatment in order to match the characteristics and variations in a patient’s disharmony. Acupuncture points lie on the network of meridians and cover most of the body. Recently electromagnetic research has confirmed their location. In a healthy state energy or Qi flows freely through these meridians, but when a person has a disease or illness this energy flow becomes blocked or interrupted creating disharmony plus
the resulting symptoms and signs of a particular disease. Acupuncture and herbs allow Qi to flow to areas where it is Deficient and away from where it is in Excess. In this way, they regulate and restore the harmonious energetic balance of the body thus eliminating the disease.
Advocates of Chinese Medicine Tried and Tested
Western Medicine and some Western doctors often denigrate Chinese Medicine and argue that it is not “scientific.” The illusion that has been fostered in the Western world is that anything ”scientific” or “newly discovered” must be superior to everything that came before it, that the only knowledge of value is knowledge derived during the past 50 years. In reality, medicine that has little effect and doesn’t improve a patients symptoms will disappear from the market place in a very short time simply because it doesn’t work. If a treatment is ineffective, it will not be continued. Of the 5000 new drugs unleashed on the public every year 4000 of them have to be withdrawn after 5 years because of adverse side effects. Any Chinese herbal treatment that has existed for several thousand years is effective and has proven its effectiveness in the experience of thousands – if not millions- of patients and doctors. This is a far tougher standard than the testing of a few hundred rats in a laboratory. Western Medicine or Allopathic Medicine as it is sometimes called is still in its infancy compared to Traditional Chinese Medicine. Western Medicine as we know it came into being in Germany at the end of the 19th Century, a little more than a hundred years ago. While there has been much progress and tremendous innovation, Western Medicine is still a young and evolving science; Traditional Chinese Medicine on the other hand is based on thousands of years of experience and study.

simple steps to treat your acne Top tips for preventing and curing acne 1. Acne and Exercise.
This may come as a surprise but you can really make a difference to your acne by keeping fit. Apart from anything else, exercise will make you feel good and lift your spirits so that you are in a better position to cope with your condition. However, it is also important to remember that you should be suitably dressed for the kind of exercise you have in mind. Ideally, your clothing should be loose and comfortable and above all, clean. It is better to use natural fabrics, which will allow your skin to breathe and provide good air circulation. This is a very important way to treat Acne.
2. Acne and Cosmetics.
If you are fond of using cosmetics, make sure you use products that do not have an oily base, so that they do not block the pores of your skin. Select hypoallergenic perfumes and cosmetics so that you do not have to deal with allergic reactions from ingredients contained in heavy creams etc.
3. Acne and Diet.
Although diet is not directly related to acne, it has everything to do with your general health
You may be mortified by the fact that you have an acne problem, but you should be happy that there are so many ways in which it can be treated. Even if you are coming up against acne for the first time, there is plenty you can do to help yourself. Here are some of the factors you need to consider.
5. Treatment of skin with acne.
help to clear blemishes such as blackheads and whiteheads quite effectively. Use a razor with a sharp blade and gentle sweeping motions rather than heavy pressure. A razor with a single blade will be more effective than one with a twin blade. And you will feel better using an electric shaver rather than a manual razor if you have an acne problem, although conventional razors would probably give you a closer shave.
6. Acne Treatment Products.
8. Combat acne and stress with rest, sleep and diversions.
Whatever you do, be gentle with your skin, especially when you have acne. Avoid touching your face as far as possible, wash your face with a mild cleanser and dry it gently but thoroughly. Ideally, you should pat your face dry so that you do not stretch your skin or aggravate the acne by rough handling. Gentle skin treatment is vital in treating acne.
If you are using acne treatment products, make sure that you have chosen products of a good quality, so that you are not troubled by side effects or toxicity. Use proactive products as far as possible, because they have a natural base and cannot do you any harm. And do not forget that you have a number of magical solutions in your kitchen, which can work wonders for you!
7. Shaving with acne.
Unlikely as it may sound, shaving can serve as a great way to exfoliate your skin. Of course, you will have to be careful if your face is covered with acne, but you can try to get around the trouble spots carefully. Shaving can actually
and particularly the health of your skin. So do ensure that you are eating right and taking in enough of the vital nutrients. These include Vitamin A, although high doses of this vitamin have proved to be toxic; the B Vitamins, as well as Vitamins C and E. You could also take vitamin and mineral supplements of a reliable brand. However, do remember that it is best to get nutrients mainly from food sources and supplements should only be props. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and make sure that you drink lots of water to flush out your system.
4. Acne and Hormonal Activity.
This is particularly important in the adolescent years, when hormonal changes may cause acne to flare up. It is also relevant for women who have to cope with hormonal changes and their effects on the menstrual cycle. Acne that has been caused by hormonal imbalances can be treated by the application of topical creams or oral antibiotics. Adults may opt for hormone replacement therapy or HRT, or decide to use birth control pills. They may also combine these with over the counter or OTC medications.
Since stress can play a part in aggravating acne, it is essential to ensure that you get enough rest and sleep. Keep yourself busy with stimulating activities that will keep you in good spirits. Keep up a good lifestyle and take advantage of opportunities to divert yourself with simple pleasures like walking out with a friend etc.If you follow all these suggestions, you will be well equipped to deal with your acne, no matter how bad it is. Confide in your family and friends. They will be happy to help. And do not forget that professional guidance is never very far away. Your doctor and dermatologist will have your interests at heart as well.

Award Winning Photography by Dermot Donohue - Donohue Studios, Letterkenny
A
t Donohue Studios, we pride ourselves in our approach to every client. Each studio session is unique and we create at least 20 – 30 shots, but very often a lot more. In advance of our studio sessions, we invite our clients for a consultation where we can prepare the style or theme of the shoot, as well as deciding upon the various combinations of the portraits. With help of our team, we can plan the clothing and background for your portrait session, so that we can make each shoot original.
As each family is different, we aim to create a range of portraits that suit your family, and in doing so, we make different combinations, for example father and sons together, mother and
12
daughters together, family members from different generations, etc… We do a range of full length and half length portraits, seated and standing poses and head and shoulders. We allow up to an hour for the portrait session, to give plenty of time to get a lot of variety from the shoot. Following your portrait session, we will make an appointment for you to view your portraits in our viewing lounge. At this appointment, you will see all your portraits on a large screen, using expert software which, along with our experience, will help you choose the portraits you like best. We can then guide you in the selection of our different styles and finishes, including Classic, Traditional, Canvas or ArtBlock. Again, we allow up to an hour for the viewing, so there is adequate time to make your decisions.
Your experience at Donohue Studios is fully insured through our Promise of Excellence and Lifetime Guarantee. Promise of Excellence - Designed to insure you are totally satisfied from the outset. - If you feel at the time of the viewing that there isn’t one portrait that you are happy enough with to enlarge and frame then we will re shoot the portraits again completely free of charge. Lifetime Guarantee - Insures all our portraits against flaw or defect. - Fully guaranteed against material failure or flaws in the workmanship or finishing. - If anything should happen to the portrait due to material failure assuming we have the original file or then we will completely replace it free of charge.

P
eople often think about the view from their home, but rarely consider the views within the home. Just about everyone is after more space. Whether it is for another bedroom, a larger kitchen or a family room, we see hundreds of customers seeking this basic requirement. The solution, however, is not always just about extra square feet. It is about how the space is used – the efficiency of space – and how the space is experienced – the perception of space. I worked last year on a project that illustrates this nicely. Planning permission had been gained for a contemporary-style extension on a 1920s semi. There was to be an impressive new kitchen with big glass doors on to a garden. On entering the house, there was an existing hallway and staircase, but the door through to the new kitchen was slightly to the side of the possible line of sight. I must admit that it took a little persuasion to get the customers to agree to the expense of moving a doorway only 50cm to the left. I am glad to say that they are now delighted I twisted their arms, because the effect is transformational – you can see down the hallway, over the kitchen island, through the kitchen and into the garden. The sense of depth created
by such views, seeing from one space through one or two others to a final, well-lit conclusion, is an established principle of Japanese gardens. Such gardens, dating back hundreds of years, show how to maximise a feeling of spaciousness with great simplicity, even in relatively small gardens. Another intriguing technique is to set up a view where the final space peels off to one side, giving the sense that there is somewhere “beyond”. All sorts of details can help. In one narrow terraced house, we opened up the interior to pull the view down the length of the space to a fairly narrow garden window at the end. While all practical considerations were allowed for, the whole design lent itself to setting up this view. The direction of the boards in the timber flooring, a bulkhead in the ceiling with a line of downlighters, and a long kitchen worktop all drew the eye to the window. The effect can be a wonderful balance for those uncomfortable with the notion of “open plan”. Often, rather than completely knocking through spaces, setting up a series of lined-up doorways will allow views from one room, through a second, into a third space and beyond. Doing this has a great spacious effect while retaining the ability to divide when circumstances demand. Continued on page 20 >

< Continued from page 18 Because the benefits are not practical or particularly tangible, communicating the value of such techniques can be a challenge. I came across a project recently where a family planned significant extensions and alterations to the rear of their house, with café-style glass doors opening on to their charming garden. They were expecting to spend a fair bit of money making the back of their house really nice. Opposite the front door was a downstairs lavatory, put in only a year or so earlier. The positioning of this made the hallway rather cramped and meant that, having come into the house, you would have to take three steps sideways before going through to the new family space. The fact that they had spent several hundred pounds on this lavatory so recently meant that they were reluctant to rip it out, but there was an ideal location to the side of the entrance where it could have been relocated. The effect would have been tremendous, making the house feel much more unified. They decided to leave it and would “see once the work was done”, but the sad thing is that because they will never experience the effect, they’ll never know what they are missing. Project: Creating
‘sightlines’ through your home How much will it cost?

Another intriguing technique is to set up a view where the final space peels off to one side, giving the sense that there is somewhere “beyond”.
Setting up views within your home can be a relatively simple task in terms of the necessary building work. The important thing in keeping costs down is not to “force” it. If you are undertaking a larger project anyway, arranging things to set up views (such as lining up the floorboards or the position of the lighting), will add no significant cost. Moving a doorway in an interior wall should add between €500 and €1,500 to other works, depending upon the circumstances.
How much hassle is it?
It’s mainly about taking the time and effort to think it through at the design stage. If you have the work designed intelligently, the opportunities will present themselves before a brick is laid, but if you suddenly realise what could be done while your house is full of builders and electricians, the change of course can cause all sorts of delays, extra expenses and problems.
What’s the first step?
Invest in design! While some people can imagine things in three dimensions, most have understandable trouble trying to visualise how rooms might connect and what the views might be. An architect is trained to see all of these things in the mind’s eye and must try to communicate these possibilities to you. You can have a computer visualisation prepared, but this is often time-consuming and expensive.

Prepare for Spring Gardening
to do this in the fall so you don’t have to do it when it’s still cold outside.) • Clean and repair outdoor furniture. It may be too cold to paint unless you’ve got a basement or heated and ventilated work area, but at least they will be ready when the weather warms. • If you haven’t broken the chemical habit, make sure you check any old chemicals you might have. Before you discard, check with your county or city waste management office for guidance on recycling or disposing of any hazardous chemicals. • Provide or build gardening supports for peonies, tomatoes, peas, beans, and squash. Supporting flowers with heavy heads prevents breakage.
Growing vegetables vertically saves space and prevents bugs and slugs from knoshing on your veggies. • Sow seeds in starter trays according to package instructions and the last frost date for your area. Don’t get anxious and start working in the garden too early. The soil needs to be damp but not soggy or sticky. If you take a handful of soil and make a ball, it should fall apart easily when you open your hand. Also, setting out plants prematurely often results in discouraging losses. Planning and getting ready to go saves time and money you’ll want to spend on cool new plants and tools. Source: www.demesne.info
Tel: 074 91 21655 or 074 91 21541 Web: www.alcorns.town.ie After the winter holiday season, most gardeners start itching to get back out in the yard and start their spring gardens. Unless you live in a mild climate though, chances are your garden is still under snow or too wet and cold to work. As a result, January and February are ideal months for planning, ordering seed, and starting plants indoors to be ready the instant they can jump into the growing season. Work back six weeks from the last frost date in your area to develop a timeline. The following list will help you get started before you set out a single plant. • Do you want new beds? If so, lay out newspaper 5 or 6 sheets deep, then add several inches of compost over the top. This kills existing vegetation by smothering it. Four months later, you can dig it up to work the compost into the soil. No sod removal is necessary. (This is best done in December or January.) • Shop for seeds in December and January. Order early for best selection. If you snooze, you’ll lose. • Assess soil. Buy a soil test kit or have soil tested. Most county extension services can test your garden soil or recommend labs if they don’t. Healthy soil is essential
22
to a productive plant, so it pays to test especially if your results were unimpressive last year. Call to find out what you need to do and how long it will take, then plan accordingly. • Check shrubs and woody plants. What needs pruning? For early spring bloomers like forsythia, prune promptly after flowering is complete. • Fruit trees need to be pruned before they begin to blossom if you didn’t get to it while the trees were domant. If they blossom, it’s best to wait until winter rolls around again. (It’s okay to prune dead wood.) • Do you have a lot of perennials? Do any of them need to be moved? Spring is the time to transplant divisions or move plants around. If you have friends who are gardeners, it’s a good time to arrange trades. • Check your tools. Clean and sharpen blades on hand tools. Have mower serviced if you didn’t do it in the fall before you put them away. Budget for new tools or replacements now. • While you’re at it, organize the garden shed. Clean, sterilize, and organize terracotta pots, planters, and starter trays. Sterilize using a bleach and water solution of 1 part bleach to ten parts water. Rinse thoroughly, then dry. (Remember

motoring the time it was bought, so buying their car would save you a lot of money • Unlike purchasing a new vehicle with high insurance fees, you will receive a lower cost of insurance if you choose to buy second-hand cars. • One thing that has made used cars more appealing is their improved reliability. When properly maintained, today’s vehicles should easily go well past 100,000 miles and many can reach 200,000 miles without a major breakdown. CONS - Here is a list of the disadvantages of used-car buying: • The options of car are limited, so the search for the right vehicle can be lengthy. However, with the internet this search can be made a lot easier and efficient
Buying a Car Identify what you want before you go to a dealership. Since your choices may be limited by what you can afford, determine your monthly costs before you do anything. Remember you have to factor in tax, insurance, petrol & maintenance, so before you over exceed your budget try and calculate your monthly outgoings before you spend too much. NEW CARS (PROS / CONS) Time for a new car? For most of us, buying a car is a big deal. It’s often the second largest purchase you make after your home. Like any major financial decision, you need to take your time and ignore the “buy now” messages that regularly flood the media. So, first things first: figure out how much you can afford to spend. Think about applying for a loan before you get to the car dealer or showroom. That will help you set your price range. Next, decide what kind of car best suits your needs. That’s needs, not wants. If

• The buyers have no idea if car was treated or altered. Used cars usually have worn consumables such as hoses, tyres, shocks, filters, fans and clutch • Although used car dealers usually provide a warranty, it is only limited to a couple of months (or a year if you are lucky) unlike purchasing a new car with a full warranty. Certain maintenance on your purchased second-hand car could be more expensive you want the hottest set of wheels on the block, that’s okay. In the long run, though, you’ll be better off answering these questions before you decide: • Are you single or a family of five? Will you use your car to commute daily or putt around on weekends? • How much petrol/diesel will it use? • What sort of maintenance will it require? New or used? It may be that the only way to afford the car of your dreams is to buy used. There’s nothing wrong with that. But whether you buy from a dealer or an individual, be careful. Take your time and do your homework. Most of us aren’t mechanically inclined. So, once you’ve test-driven the vehicle take it to a licensed mechanic for a final inspection. Always cover your options when dealing with a private sale. Arrange for a mechanic to inspect the car before cash is exchanged. PROS - Buying a used car could benefit the buyer in several ways: • The original owner of the car received the depreciation hit. The market value of a new car decreases from year to year. An average 30% of its value within three years from
• Purchasing a second-hand vehicle would offer you a lower trade-in value • There is always the risk that you’ll buy a lemon, of course. Even a car with a great reliability history can be a risky proposition if it was abused by a previous owner or had been seriously damaged and the impairments hidden. Giving the car a careful inspection yourself, followed by having the vehicle thoroughly inspected by a qualified mechanic, can usually identify most problems • It is difficult to negotiate fair financing terms on an older vehicle Buying your used car could waste your money if you fail to do your research, compare dealerships, and be aware of the car’s market value. Be a wise used-car buyer. Source: www.irishmotoring.ie

€174,980 and 6% on income above €174,980. (Exempt if Medical Card holder or earning less than €15,028) Persons entitled to a full medical card are not excluded from the Universal Social Charge. Update - USC capped at 4% for Medical Card holders Calculation of Universal Social Charge The new USC – Universal Social Charge was introduced in January 2011 – and many people will have already seen USC deductions on their payslips. Many lower paid workers would have previously been exempt from the Income Levy and the Health Levy – but they will now be having USC deductions from payslips. Also – some workers who don’t pay Income Tax will be liable for USC as soon as they earn €77 a week. See here for more details of the Universal Social Charge Rates . Here is a breakdown showing the amounts of USC for various income levels. It is not as good as an online USC calculator – but hopefully it will help you see what USC deductions to expect in 2011. Chicken Casserole Chicken casseroles are delicious, easy, comforting and fabulous recipes to make ahead of time. This is a great meal to get people sitting together and chatting. I believe while we still all love roast chicken it is nice to have a change and this recipe does exactly that. Once you’ve conquered butchering a chicken it’s endless the options you have. This is a very economical dish and will easily feed six people. Most butchers will butcher a chicken for you or indeed go with already cut pieces of leg, thigh, drum stick, wing and breast. Serves: 4
Method: Butcher chicken as shown in previous pictures and set aside. Dip chicken cuts into flour.
Ingredients: 1 Whole Chicken approx 1KG 50g Flour 2 Carrots 1 Onion 8 – 10 Mushrooms 2 Cloves Garlic crushed 400g Chopped Tomatoes 2 Table spoons tomato puree Olive Oil 100 ml Chicken Stock 100ml Red Wine Freshly ground black pepper 4 sprigs of thyme Fresh parsley
Slice the onion, carrot, mushroom. Heat the pan with oil add the floured pieces of chicken and sear well then transfer chicken to casserole dish. Season with black pepper. In the pan chicken was fried add the onion, garlic, carrot, thyme, mushroom, and fry for 1 minute then add, red wine and allow to reduce by half. Now add tomatoes and tomato puree followed by the chicken stock. Pour sauce in between the chicken pieces and not over the chicken as you want the skin to stay crisp. Place in pre heated oven for approx 50 minutes @ 160°C Once cooked remove chicken pieces and leave to rest. In the casserole dish add chopped parsley. Garnish with sprig of thyme. Serve either plated or family style
Brian’s Tip!
Serve with roasted potatoes. Add other vegetables like green beans and celery. 31
