he one chance of the year where you get to show off your style and personality as well as flirt with your office crush is the work Christmas party. lare Boyle has had dogs all her life. The passion started at a young age when her parents in the UK bred German Shepherd Dogs. Whilst living here in Co. Donegal, Clare has rekindle her passion for GSD and decided to pursue a hobby into more than just that and enrolled on various canine courses to learn as much about dogs as possible. In July 2010, she successfully completed an instructors course and problem solving course. Together with a Dog grooming Diploma completed, and a Certification in Canine Behaviour from the Institute of Animal care being undertaken at the present, and a degree in Canine Pyschology, Clare hopes to be able to put her own unique understanding of dogs with the knowledge learnt and the experience of her own dogs to help people have a better understanding and education of pets as we know today. On the 20th November, Lupanast Dog Training will be launching the First Agility Club of the North West which will provide instruction in Agility for either fun or competition level. Agility is a sport which can benefit all types of people and their dogs. As well as getting yourself fit, the dogs enjoy the mental stimulation of such an activity and this also reinforces the skill of obedience. It’s a fantastic way to connect with your dog and with so many restrictions on places now that prohibit dogs, there are less and less places to really let them go free and have fun! So come along on the day of the launch or call to book a place on the beginners course. You can even check out the website or phone for a chat. Either way, the more the merrier for a great social and interesting club for you and your pet. Also, we provide obedience training, help to solve behavioural problems and hold classes to suit all needs. Home visits can be accommodated. The Quick Guide to Heating In these uncertain economic times, everyone is looking for ways to reduce their expenses without compromising their quality of living. How you heat your home can seriously hinder your finances, and in recent years has also become a subject of debate for environmental reasons. In an ideal world, most home owners would love to heat their houses using a renewable energy source in the most cost efficient way possible. The biggest conundrum however is which comes first, your budget or the environment? • Fireplaces • Bioethanol Fireplaces • Stoves • Wood Pellet Stoves • Radiators • Geo Thermal Heating • Under floor Heating • Solar Panels Fireplaces The traditional fossil fuel fireplace is the centrepiece of many households. Though it scores relatively low in the heat efficiency charts, in comparison to alternative, more modern heating systems, it is the cosy atmosphere created by a fireplace that warms a room. A feature of the fireplace that is often overlooked is that home owners can monitor heating bills by controlling the amount of coal, briquettes or wood that they burn, thus doing away with unexpected heating bills. Bioethanol Fireplaces Bioethanol fireplaces are the latest addition to the fireplace family. Instead of using coal, wood or briquettes, they are fuelled by a renewable modern energy
(denatured ethanol) that burns clear. Bio-ethanol fireplaces do not require a flue and can be free-standing fixtures, a feature that sets them apart from the more traditional fireplace. By not requiring a flue or chimney, bio-ethanol fireplaces retain a far greater amount of heat. Stoves Stove designs have made great advances in their heating capabilities, while still retaining their old fashioned charm. Stoves are, above all, a multi-functional appliance that can used to cook food, boil water and heat your home. Both solid fuel and electric options are available. The latest stove can heat up to 30 radiators in a single house alongside its traditional stove duties. Wood Pellet Stoves A popular option for eco-conscious homeowners, domestic pellet fuel stoves burn small pellets that can be made of woodchips or agricultural crop waste. Pellet stoves are the cleanest of solid fuel burning residential heating appliances, with combustion efficiencies of up to 90%. In terms of convenience and air cleanliness, wood pellet stoves are easier to maintain and operate than standard fireplaces and also produce far less air pollution. The stoves usually require refuelling only once a day and two tons of pellet fuel (which is the estimated amount required for a standard household a year) costs approximately €300. Radiators It has become increasingly fashionable to use the radiator not only as a heating source, but also a focal visual point for a room. Radiators use a renewable energy source and have grown in efficiency in the past years as well in style. Geo Thermal Heating The geothermal system captures the constant temperature of the earth and transports it from the ground to a heat pump, which then distributes the heat source to regular radiators and hot water
cylinders. This is achieved by using only 25 per cent of the electrical energy normally required to run a conventional heating system. The energy that is generated by a ground source heat pump is 100 percent renewable. In the summer the system can also be used to cool your home by transporting the heat to the subsoil, which will also save money. Under floor Heating Under floor heating is regarded scientifically as the best method of heating the human body in your home, based on the principle that heat rises. By being radiated from under the floor, this heating system allows the energy to heat the entire room before evaporating near the ceiling. Other heating appliances lose heat because they emit the heat higher into the air, which will evaporate more quickly. Under floor heating requires a very labour intensive form of installation, which will affect the cost. Nevertheless, the actual cost of running the system is respectively lower than standard heating systems, as a lower temperature is required to sufficiently heat the room. Other advantages are that the heating system itself is completely hidden from view and the heat is distributed at a uniform temperature. Solar Panels There have been many developments in the manufacturing of domestic solar panels in the past few years that have resulted in an increase in their popularity and use in Irish homes. They can be fitted to both existing homes and new builds, and new houses have the option of the solar panels being integrated into the roof itself. You can purchase Solar focus CPC solar panels that are only 65mm, currently the lowest profile solar panels in Ireland. Though solar panels do not come cheap, they can provide up to 70% of your annual hot water needs, are extremely ecofriendly and come with a minimum 10 year guarantee. Source: House & Home

Managing your money Build an emergency fund
In the current climate it’s more important than ever for you to build up some savings. This money should be readily available, if you need it for some unforeseen circumstances such as reduced income or redundancy. Try to build up at least three months salary and put it away so you won’t be tempted to use it for day to day things. Our budget planner will help you identify where and how much you can afford to save. You can compare regular savings accounts from the main banks to find the best account for you. If you are not good at putting money aside, you might consider using a standing order to pay into a separate savings account so you don’t have to think about it. Use our budget planner as a starting point and input yearly figures for your income and spending. This will give you a clear snapshot of your current money situation and what expenses you have every year. Then consider your: • Current balance on savings - which may help to tide you over when you have more expenses than usual. But try to keep at least 3 months salary as a separate emergency fund. • Outstanding loans - in particular the amount you have to repay and how long it will take to repay. Both of these factors will affect your ability to allow for expenses and savings.
Remember:
• If you don’t have exact details of your day-to-day or one-off expenses, make a rough estimate based on your bank and credit card statements and your bills • Don’t overestimate or under-
estimate your income and spending as this will affect you in the next stages when you are planning your goals and budgeting You should review your financial situation at least once a year. If you do this you will know how much money you have to work with and what allowances you need to make for changes in your circumstances. For example, you could be living on a lower income, or have new expenses such as planning for a wedding or children.

As well as your general expenses, you may also have a particular goal that you need to put aside money for, such as the ones listed below.

Make a regular budget and try to stick to it
Sticking to a budget will help you save for your goals, manage loans/ general expenses and avoid debt problems. Firstly you should consider who the budget is for? If you have a family or share your home with a partner, you should consider all household income, spending and other commitments. Then use our budget planner to work out a practical budget, that captures all your details. Tie it in with
your wages - so for example, if you get paid monthly, input monthly figures. You may be able to save more in some months than others, so your budget should be flexible enough to allow for this. Be honest about the figures in your budget – don’t overestimate or underestimate your income or spending. Don’t include money from your savings as income – use regular income only. You should talk regularly to your partner or family about how you are doing with your budget. Check how much closer you are to achieving your goals. If you don’t keep to your budget, don’t be discouraged. Start again. It can take time to adjust to a new spending pattern. RSA Urges Motorists Not to Get Caught Out if Severe Weather Hits
A
s winter is upon us, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) is asking motorists to make sure their vehicles are ready for winter. This wintertime drivers need to ensure their cars are ready for the extra challenges winter driving brings. Drivers should service their vehicle to make sure it is fit and safe. All lights should be working and clean. The tyre pressure needs to be at the manufacturers recommended level and tyre thread depth at 1.6mm. Wipers are very important for driving this winter; they need to be checked for wear and tear, and replaced if necessary. To stay safe on the roads this winter Mr. Noel Brett Chief Executive urged drivers to check their
vehicles are ready for the winter ahead. “Taking a number of simple precautions can ensure safety on the Irish roads this winter for you and your family. Don’t get caught out if severe weather hits, make the necessary checks on your vehicle now.” Mr. Brett added: “driving during the winter months creates a multitude of different challenges. It’s not just at night you need to turn on your lights, using dipped headlights during the daytime makes it easier for other road users to see you. The key this winter is to slow down and remain a safe distance behind the car in front of you.” >>
54 Motoring >> There are a number of simple precautions the RSA advises for driving over the winter months: • Check your tyres…they are your only contact with the road. Tyres should be at least the minimum legal thread depth of 1.6mm but need to be changed before they get this worn. Tyres need to be to the correct tyre pressure to give the motorist the best chance in extreme conditions. • Use your lights. As we come into the winter months, motorists are advised to use dipped head lights during the day so you are easily seen. Headlights and taillights should be in working order. • Understand your brakes. Check your car manual and find out if your vehicle has safety assist technology such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC) or Anti Lock Braking System (ABS). Learn how these technologies can assist your driving in harsh weather conditions. • Safe Distance. It takes longer
to stop a car during the winter weather so slow down and allow extra distance between you and the car in front. • Make sure you can clearly see. All too often motorists do not defog or de-ice windows and mirrors which can compromise visibility. This winter ensure windows and mirrors are clear, and carry a de-icer and screen scraper. Do not use boiling water as this can crack the windscreen. • Beware of “Black Ice”. Black Ice is one of winter’s biggest hazards as it is difficult to see. Watch out for sheltered/ shaded areas on roads, under trees and near high walls. • Be prepared. During these winter months it is advised that motorists carry a number of essentials in the boot of their car. 1. High visibility vest 2. Spare fuel 3. A ppropriate footwear in case you need to leave your vehicle e.g. boots 4. A hazard warning triangle 5. Spare wheel
6. Tow Rope 7. A shovel 8. De-icing equipment (for glass and door locks) 9. Spare bulbs 10. First aid kit 11. A fire extinguisher 12. A working torch 13. A car blanket, additional clothing & some food and water • In the event of a breakdown. Drivers need to ensure their vehicle is well in off the road so as not to obstruct other vehicles. The driver should also put on their hazard warning lights. If the vehicle breaks down on the motorway pull in as far as you can, alerting traffic behind you with hazard lights. The driver should leave their vehicle, get behind the barrier (on the embankment) and call the Gardaí, on their mobile phone or roadside telephone. •K eep up to date. Listen to local weather and traffic reports. Pay heed to the weather warnings alerting drivers of unsafe and dangerous driving conditions.
